Starting point is 00:00:00 Alright, so what I wanted to talk about today was drones. Only because they're becoming more prevalent and now there's that big drone thing in New Jersey going on there. So it's interesting to see what's going on with that. Now they're saying this morning, they were saying something about some of them were manned. So manned drones? So I guess you could be in a drone manned. And we don't really know anything about it which is kind of weird never thought about someone being in a drone that's
Starting point is 00:00:31 that would be manned but and someone said something about a mothership that they're all coming out of so it's all very interesting stuff so drones in general are used for bad things drone you know suicide drones and all that. Those wars and everything. I try not to talk about it. But there's also good stuff drones are used for. It just feels like in our country, drones really hasn't had any sort of a negative impact yet.
Starting point is 00:01:04 However, this whole thing in New Jersey is not a good sign. Because drones can easily be weaponized and used for bad things, surveillance, and all kinds of stuff. So I'm going to get some history on drones, and then where it's going. So, let's bring my little buddy
Starting point is 00:01:21 in here. I have some, like, one of the few cheap drones. I've never really flown a drone. I don't know how people can fly them. They seem hard. I know in the early days the hobbyists, they used to fly planes, helicopters. I have some of that stuff around too. But flying a drone is supposed to be easier up and down.
Starting point is 00:01:47 However, I've never really tried to sit and pilot anything. I think I tried a few times and it crashed. But now drones are almost the size of, and they were saying the ones there are the size of a car. That's pretty scary stuff. You're flying around something remotely that's the size of a car. That's pretty scary stuff. If you're flying around something remotely that's the size of a car, that's pretty big. And then the idea of shooting one down
Starting point is 00:02:09 means it's going to fall somewhere, therefore causing all kinds of issues. So it's going to be interesting to see drones, like I said, in our part of the world really haven't had, other than using them for newscasts and
Starting point is 00:02:27 surveillance and stuff but then you think ai with drones so a drone that could basically run itself then it gets pretty scary if you think about it that way but i don't see that being that far away uh you won't need to have so the drone will actually be manned with ai therefore it could fly on its own doesn't need to have remote uh and the ai controls it internally with no cockpit or anything because it's ai in itself you know taught on how to fly a drone so that's pretty pretty interesting thought so the drone the ai driven drone that's what we'll talk about let's get my buddy in here i'm looking around my memory though i gotta find out what this thing is about uh putting images now let's see what we get in there.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Hello? Hey, Tom. How's your day going? Good. Today we're going to talk about drones. Sure thing. Drones are a fascinating topic. Are you looking to buy one, or are you interested in how they work, or how to use them?
Starting point is 00:03:45 So, just the first of the history. when did the drones really start coming around drones have been around for quite some time the earliest drones were developed for military purposes around world war one over time they've evolved significantly nowadays we have consumer drones used for photography, racing, and even delivery services. What aspect of drone history interests you most? So drones were all the way back in World War I? How? It's pretty amazing how much drone technology has evolved since then. They started as simple, remote-controlled aircraft for military use. And now, they're used for so many different purposes, from capturing stunning aerial footage to assisting in search and rescue missions.
Starting point is 00:04:33 What are you most interested in when it comes to drones? So those were basically radio airplanes back then, where they used to fly into a suicide kind of thing? Crash? Yes. Exactly. Early drones were quite rudimentary compared to today's sophisticated models. They were essentially guided missiles or remotely piloted aircraft. Over time, the technology evolved, leading to the drones we know today, which have a wide range of uses and capabilities. But unfortunately, the main use for them is military. Yes, military applications have been a significant part of drone development. However, drones are now widely used for commercial and recreational purposes too. They offer great potential in many fields, including agriculture, filmmaking, and environmental monitoring.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And I know you've seen drones used to survey minefields and stuff like that. Surveying is a big drone use. Absolutely. Drones are extremely useful for surveying dangerous or hard-to-reach areas like minefields. They provide a safe way to gather data and create detailed maps. Drones are also widely used in construction, real estate, and even wildlife conservation. It's incredible how versatile they are. How high can a drone fly?
Starting point is 00:06:09 Most consumer drones are limited by regulations to a maximum altitude of 400 feet, about 120 meters above ground level in many countries. This ensures safe operation and avoids conflicts with other aircraft. Some specialized or professional drones might be capable of flying higher, but they would typically require special permissions and adherence to strict regulations. Drones can be the size of a car? Yes, some drones can be as large as a car or even bigger. These larger drones are usually used for industrial or commercial purposes, such as cargo transport or agricultural tasks. They have powerful engines and can carry substantial payloads.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Surveillance as well, military-wise. Exactly. Larger drones are often used for military surveillance and reconnaissance. They can cover vast areas and stay in the air for extended periods, providing valuable information. Drones of various sizes can be adapted for different types of missions and tasks. And it has to have someone that's piloting it somewhere on the ground. Yes, exactly. Most drones, especially military or large commercial ones, are piloted remotely from the ground. The operator uses a control station to maneuver the drone, which can be miles away. Some advanced drones also have autonomous
Starting point is 00:07:46 capabilities for specific tasks, but a human pilot is usually involved in controlling or overseeing the operation. Yeah, that was my next thing, AI drone drones. AI drones are an exciting development. These drones can perform tasks autonomously using advanced algorithms and sensors to navigate and make decisions. They can be used for tasks like mapping, monitoring crops, or inspecting infrastructure. AI enables drones to operate more efficiently and safely, especially in complex or hazardous environments. They will just fly on their own. They don't need an operator. and safely, especially in complex or hazardous environments.
Starting point is 00:08:26 They would just fly on their own. They don't need an operator. Exactly. AI drones can be programmed to complete missions or tasks. So, have you seen the news about all the drones over in New Jersey? I haven't seen that news. What's happening with the drones in New Jersey? I haven't seen that news. What's happening with the drones in New Jersey? Every night there's many, up to 60 drones. They don't know where they're coming from and then they disappear at the end of the night. That sounds intriguing. It's interesting how drones can create
Starting point is 00:09:01 such mysteries. I wonder if they're part of some coordinated project or just hobbyists having fun. What do you think? It's way beyond the hobbyist. Even the government doesn't really know what's going on. That's definitely mysterious. It sounds like a large-scale operation if there are so many drones involved. I wonder what their purpose could be. Have there been any theories or explanations so far? Something about a mothership? That's quite an idea. If there's a mothership involved, that would add a whole new layer of intrigue to the situation. It's fascinating to think about all the possibilities and what might be behind this. I hope they figure it out soon. Some say that maybe it was operator driven.
Starting point is 00:09:52 That would make sense. Large scale drone operations could require organized oversight. It's definitely an intriguing mystery. Can it be a piloted drone? It's definitely an intriguing mystery. Can it be a piloted drone? It's possible. Some drones are large enough to carry a human pilot, making them more like small aircraft. However, most drones, especially for surveillance or commercial use, are remotely operated. It all depends on the specific purpose and design of the drone.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Are drones usually electric or powered by something else? Most consumer and commercial drones are electric, using rechargeable batteries for power. However, some larger drones, or those used for military purposes, might use other power sources, like gasoline or hybrid engines. The power source depends on the drone's size, design, and intended use. And the material used for a drone is basically like an aircraft? Yes. Many drones are made from lightweight, durable materials similar to those used in aircraft. Common materials include carbon fiber, fiberglass, and various composites. These materials help keep drones lightweight for better flight performance while ensuring they remain strong and durable.
Starting point is 00:11:23 And I know the consumer has those four propellers. Is that common? Yes, that's quite common. Most consumer drones, especially quadcopters, have four propellers. This design provides stability and maneuverability, making them easy to control for various activities like photography or recreational flying. Quadcopters are popular because they offer a good balance of lift, control, and simplicity in design.
Starting point is 00:11:56 And does it have a camera of some kind on it? Yes, many consumer drones come equipped with cameras. These cameras can capture high-quality photos and videos from the air, which is great for aerial photography, videography, and even live streaming. The camera feature is one of the main reasons drones have become so popular for recreational and professional use. There really hasn't been any drone incidents in the United States as of yet. While there have been some incidents involving drones, like near misses with aircraft or unauthorized flights over restricted areas, overall, drone use has been relatively safe. Regulations and guidelines help ensure that drones are used responsibly and safely.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Because in other countries, they use them for suicide bombs. It's true that drones have been used in various ways globally, including for harmful purposes. It's a reminder of the importance of regulations and responsible use. Many countries have implemented strict rules to ensure drones are used safely and ethically. Is there a way to jam a drone? Jamming a drone typically involves using electronic signals to interfere with the communication between the drone and
Starting point is 00:13:25 its operator. This can disrupt the drone's flight and potentially bring it down or force it to land. It's a method often used for security purposes to prevent unauthorized drone flights over restricted areas. Because we're having that problem in New Jersey, so they say they can't shoot them down, so they'll have to jam them somehow. That makes sense. Jamming can be a safer and more controlled way to handle unauthorized drones, especially in populated areas where shooting them down could be dangerous. It's a tricky situation, and using technology like jamming can help manage these kinds of problems effectively. How high could a drone possibly fly?
Starting point is 00:14:14 Drones can technically fly to very high altitudes, but regulations usually limit them to 400 feet to avoid conflicts with other aircraft. High performance or specialized drones might be capable of reaching thousands of feet, but they generally require special permissions and adherence to strict regulations. So you couldn't use space. Space begins about 62 miles, 100 kilometers, above Earth's surface, which is far beyond a drone's capability. Drones are designed to operate within the atmosphere, and their power sources and structures aren't suited for space travel. Okay, great. All right, thank you for your time. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You're welcome. Anytime. Have a great day. Cool.
