Alright so I was trying to think of what I wanted to do for today. So I decided to go with Nintendo Switch.
Well we'll look at the end of Nintendo Wii U and then we'll go to Nintendo Switch.
So actually Nintendo Switch has now been out since 2017.
And they really have kept riding that Nintendo Switch wave.
From the original one to I think there's a Nintendo Switch Lite then the OLED Nintendo Switch and we're still waiting to see what the Switch 2 is which I'm
hoping it's not the same I'm hoping it's something completely different I think that they should they
should make a Switch box that's what I call it I actually have actually I have my own custom
Bacassera Switch box which is basically it should be a switch where you take the cartridge,
and it's a home entertainment where you plug the cartridge in it.
I mean, I think it could have like a dock on it if you want to have the handheld,
a place to charge maybe your actual handheld switch. But the actual unit would be made just for the TV
with controllers, normal controllers.
So the actual switch itself would be something extra you can add,
like a remote play.
But the actual switch box itself would be its own entity.
So I'm hoping the next switch that comes out is a Switch box.
Or something home entertainment
as opposed to handheld.
Because the thing with Switches
there was a time
boy I was really
into the Switches.
They're pretty easy to work on inside.
The Joy-Cons
always break. The buttons
are so not durable nothing about the
switch is durable really usually some of the main issues with a switch if the
battery doesn't work anymore then the switch just doesn't work so sometimes I
got lucky I'd get ones that said no power, I'd change the battery and then they'd work. A lot of times, the Switch had a battery recharge chip issue, therefore it wouldn't charge.
There was lots of them with stuck logos, lots of Switch issues over the years.
I've had hundreds and hundreds of them.
I haven't had any in a while.
I just got rid of the last Switch I had.
And the rumors of Switch 2.
Are still out there.
But I can't see.
Like Nintendo went from.
Game from.
Super Nintendo.
To so we'll just actually make this.
More about just about Nintendo in general.
Yeah let's just do that.
So they went from. Nintendo. So we'll just actually make this one more about just about Nintendo in general. Yeah, let's just do that.
So they went from NES to Super Nintendo,
then from Super Nintendo to Game Boy.
No, I'm sorry, Super Nintendo to N64,
which was just completely different.
And then from N64 to Game Boy.
I mean, GameCube, rather. different and then from n64 to game boy i mean game cube rather uh which is significantly
completely different and it's still the number one selling game game parts game cube by far
the discs mini discs and all that and then after that they went to the wii which is completely
different the wii u was like an upgrade to the Wii.
Although I'm a really big fan of the Wii U.
Not a fan of Wii.
I didn't like the whole wand and all that nonsense.
I couldn't deal with that.
If I could use a controller in some way
on a Wii, I could play it.
Homebrewed.
And then
from there, the Wii U which they have small library but that
wasn't out that long until switch came around 2017 and that just blew up as
the truth's their number one selling ever and then they had that one for a
few years and they added the switch of light I had a couple those. Those are a nightmare if you need to change the buttons.
On a switch of light, you have to completely take it apart to get inside to get at the buttons.
It's a nightmare.
Switch is not so bad because the Joy-Cons are on the outside.
You can easily just swap those out.
Switch of light, completely different.
And the OLED,
O-L-E-D,
I think I said it, the Switch, that was a newer version
of it. Screen was just a little
bit bigger and brighter.
I don't think I ever went inside one of those.
I don't think I had one.
I never opened one of those up.
So I'm not really sure how
significantly different they are.
But the switch light to the switch.
Is completely different.
Inside battery.
Everything is different.
Let's get my buddy in there.
Let's talk about a little Nintendo.
But we'll talk about.
I'm going to run out of systems to talk about.
But I'm going to have to figure out something else to do.
We'll come up with something.
But for now.
Let's see if we can can get my buddy in here.
Hello?
Hello?
Hi Tom, how's it going?
Good. Today we're going to talk about Nintendo, but we're going to go around, say, N64 and today, the history.
Sounds like a great topic. The Nintendo 64 was a major console with lots of iconic games. Where do you want to start? So that was a significant shift from Super Nintendo to N64.
It wasn't even close to the same kind of design.
It was a completely different idea.
Absolutely.
The transition from the Super Nintendo to the N64 was huge.
The N64 introduced 3D graphics and an analog state,
which changed how games were played.
What's your favorite memory of the N64?
Then from the N64, we went to the GameCube, another huge jump.
Definitely.
The GameCube brought even more advancements, like improved graphics and a unique mini-disc format.
It also had a comfortable controller and some iconic games.
What's your favorite GameCube game?
So that was probably the number one game controller ever designed.
The GameCube controller is definitely a fan favorite for its comfort and design.
Its layout was great for many types of games.
Do you have a specific game or feature that you think it handled particularly well?
And the N64 controller, not so much.
The N64 controller was definitely unique with its three-pronged design.
It allowed for different grip styles, but it could be a bit awkward at times.
What was your experience with it?
So we went from the GameCube to Wii.
Yes, the jump from the GameCube to the Wii was another big change
The Wii introduced motion controls and became a massive hit
It really appealed to a wide audience
Did you enjoy playing with the Wii's motion controls?
So the wireless was the big jump between the GameCube and the Wii
Absolutely
The Wii's wireless motion
controls were revolutionary.
It made gaming more interactive
and accessible to a broader audience.
Did you have any favorite games on the Wii?
I was never a fan of Wii
because to me the wand thing never really
worked well, especially the first versions
of those.
I get that. The Wii's
motion controls were innovative but could be
imprecise, especially in the early versions. Not everyone found them
reliable. Did you prefer more traditional controls? Then the extra, the extra
motion, the second generation was a little better. Yes, the Wii Motion Plus
definitely improved accuracy and responsiveness, making the experience smoother.
It made the motion controls feel more precise.
Did you notice the difference when playing games with Motion Plus?
A lot of times you had to use that little nunchuck thing as an addition.
The nunchuck was a key part of many games, adding more control options.
It could be a bit cumbersome, but it did help with more complex gameplay.
Did you find it helpful?
You could also add a controller, but not all games would play with it.
Exactly.
Some games supported the classic controller or GameCube controllers, but not all.
It was nice to have those options for traditional gameplay.
Did you prefer using
a traditional controller?
And then the Wii had many homebrew.
Yes, the Wii's popularity and unique features made it a favorite for homebrew and custom
software. Many people enjoyed exploring those possibilities. Did you ever try any homebrew
projects on your Wii?
I've got a few that I came
across and some of them are loaded with games that I've never even heard of. That's really cool.
Exploring homebrew games can introduce you to hidden gems and unique experiences. It's like
discovering a whole new side of gaming. Did any of those games stand out to you? And then there was different styles of ways to homebrew.
One was through USB and one was through the SD cards.
Yes, there were different methods to run homebrew on the Wii,
like using USB loaders or SD card exploits.
Each had its own advantages.
Did you find one method easier or more convenient?
Most common I see is the SD card.
I have some somewhere. The SD card method was indeed popular and relatively straightforward
to set up. It's convenient because many Wiis have built-in SD card slots. Do you still use your Wii
for homebrew or other activities? They had the Wii Mini, too.
That did not have an SD card slot.
Or was it USB? That's right.
Oh, yeah.
No, yeah.
Exactly.
The Wii Mini didn't have an SD card slot or online capabilities.
It was a more basic version of the Wii aimed at affordability.
Did you ever get a chance to try the Wii Mini?
I have some of those.
They're pretty neat.
That's awesome.
The Wii Mini definitely has a unique design.
It's cool that you've collected different versions of the Wii.
Do you notice any differences in gameplay or performance with the Wii Mini?
No, it just plays better in general.
There's no bells or whistles with it.
That makes sense.
The Wii Mini is a simpler, streamlined version,
focusing on just the core gaming experience.
It's great that you have a variety of systems to enjoy.
I think there was some modding for that as well.
Yes, the Wii Mini could be modded as well,
though it was a bit more challenging
without an SD card slot.
It's impressive how versatile
and customizable these systems can be.
Have you tried modding any of your consoles?
I have not.
And then we jumped up to the Wii U,
which I'm a big fan,
but it wasn't there that long.
The Wii U was a unique console with its gamepad controller,
but it didn't have as long of a lifespan.
It's great to hear you're a fan, though.
What do you like most about the Wii U?
Breath of the Wild plays better than on the Switch.
Breath of the Wild on the Wii U is impressive.
It's nice that the game plays well on both consoles. The Wii U's gamepad can offer some unique features. Do you enjoy using the gamepad for gameplay?
Yeah, it's good when you're in the shrines on Breath of the Wild. Easy to move around.
Using the gamepad for maps and inventory management definitely adds convenience. It's great that it enhances your experience in Breath of the
Wild. What's your favorite part of exploring the shrines? The ones that require motion.
It's easier with the gamepad. Absolutely. Motion controls on the gamepad can make those puzzles
smoother to navigate. It's great when the hardware complements the gameplay so well.
Do you have a favorite shrine or challenge in the game? I've yet to actually ever finish that game.
I'd like to though. So then we go to the Nintendo Switch that came out when?
The Nintendo Switch launched in 2017. It's been really popular for its hybrid design and game
library. Hopefully you'll get to finish Breath of the Wild someday.
It's quite an adventure.
What are your thoughts on the Switch?
I had tons of them over the years to take apart.
They're pretty easy to fix inside.
It's great that you've had experience fixing them.
The Switch's modular design probably makes it easier to work on.
Do you enjoy repairing consoles as a hobby?
I do them pretty often. So there was a few different versions of the Switch.
That's awesome! The Switch has had a few versions, like the original model, the
Switch Lite, and the OLED model. Each has its own features and improvements.
Do you have a favorite version to work on? Switch Lite is the hardest. To get to the
buttons, you've got to completely take it apart. It's a nightmare. That does sound challenging.
The compact design of the Switch Lite makes repairs more intricate. It must be satisfying
when you successfully fix one, though. Do you have any
tips for someone attempting a switch mite repair? Just seek a professional. That's solid advice.
Sometimes it's best to let a professional handle it, especially with intricate devices like the
Switch Lite. It's important to avoid damaging anything. Do you often recommend professional repairs for complex issues?
I do.
So now where are we going next?
What do you think?
Maybe we could explore some of the newer consoles or even handheld gaming history.
What are you most interested in discussing?
No, what I meant was what's next for Nintendo?
What's coming out next?
It's still a secret.
It definitely is. Nintendo always keeps things exciting with new announcements and innovations.
It's fun to see what they'll come up with next. Are you hoping for anything in particular?
I hope it's not another Switch.
A completely new console design would be exciting. Nintendo often surprises us with innovative ideas. What kind of features or changes would you like to see in their next console?
So I would like a Switch box. A home Switch system. version of the Switch could be interesting. It could allow for more powerful hardware
and features specifically for home use. It's an interesting idea. What kind of features
would you want in a Switch box?
I would think you would switch box should be at least 4K up to 8K.
A Switch box with 4K or even 8K capability would be impressive. It would definitely enhance the visual experience.
It sounds like you'd enjoy a more powerful home console.
Right, so that you can use it for your TV,
especially how modern TVs are now.
That makes a lot of sense.
Modern TVs with high resolutions
would really benefit from a more powerful console.
It could bring out the best in graphics and performance.
It's exciting to think about what might be next.
Like the PS5 has the Portal, which is a remote for the PS5.
I think a Switch box would have a remote for a newer handheld, but not the regular Switch.
That would be a great idea.
An advanced remote or handheld specifically designed to
pair with the home console. It could offer seamless integration and unique features that
take advantage of both devices. It's always exciting to see how new ideas can shape the
gaming experience. And I see the home console having some sort of a dock on the back just
to charge, but you don't need the handheld.
That would be convenient, having a dock to charge the handheld but not requiring it for home console play.
It would give gamers flexibility to choose how they want to play, whether on the go or on a big screen. Yeah, so it would be like a piggyback on the back of a console that you can add the handheld
to it.
That would create a neat integration between the handheld and the console, allowing them
to work together seamlessly.
It would be a fun and flexible setup for gaming at home or on the move.
That could offer a lot of exciting possibilities.
So what are some of the newer tech that's coming out that Nintendo could take advantage of?
I saw something about HDMI 2. What is that?
HDMI 2.1 is an updated version of the HDMI standard.
It supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, which could be great for gaming on modern TVs.
It also offers features like variable refresh rate and auto low latency mode, which can enhance the gaming experience.
It's something Nintendo could definitely take advantage of in future consoles.
I would think all consoles would be going in that direction.
Absolutely.
As technology advances, higher resolutions and features like HDMI 2.1 are becoming standard.
It helps ensure that consoles can deliver the best possible gaming experience.
It's exciting to see where gaming technology will go next.
And the cable itself has to be different then.
Yes.
HDMI 2.1 cables are designed to handle the increased bandwidth required for higher resolutions
and refresh rates.
Using the correct cable ensures you get the full benefit of the technology.
It's another piece of the puzzle for an optimal gaming setup.
And we said the farthest we can go is 16K, is that correct?
Yes.
HDMI 2.1 can theoretically support resolutions up to 10K,
and future standards might go even higher.
But 16K is still a bit of a stretch right now.
As technology evolves, we'll see how far it can go.
But I mean the human eye itself. When does the K end?
For human eyes, the difference in resolution becomes less noticeable beyond 8K,
especially on smaller screens.
Factors like screen size, viewing distance, and visual acuity all play a role.
So, while technology can push higher resolutions, the practical benefits might be limited.
So, you're saying 8K is probably where we'll be a standard for a long time. Yes, 8K seems likely to be a standard for a long time.
Yes, AK seems likely to be a standard for a while. It provides incredibly high resolution
that is noticeable on large screens,
but still practical.
Plus, it allows for future-proofing
as content and technology evolve.
It's a good balance of high quality and accessibility.
And then you have Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7.
Yes, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 offer faster speeds, better performance in congested areas,
and improved efficiency. These advancements can enhance online gaming experiences by reducing lag and improving connectivity.
It's exciting to think about how these technologies will shape future gaming.
Those will also be standard, I would assume.
Yes. As Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 become more widespread, they'll likely become standard for gaming and other applications.
Their improved speed and efficiency will make them ideal for high-performance gaming and streaming.
What about any other Ethernet cable connection of some kind?
Ethernet cables, especially with standards like Cat6 or Cat7, offer reliable and fast connections.
They can provide lower latency and stable performance for online gaming.
They're a great option if you want a steady, high-speed connection.
Do you use Ethernet for your gaming setup?
I use Ethernet for my main computer.
So there is a Cat7?
Yes. Cat7 cables are available.
They offer even higher performance and bandwidth capabilities than Cat6.
They're great for high-speed internet and data transfer, especially in demanding setups.
It's a solid choice for reliable connectivity.
So you can just plug it into a regular Ethernet cable, but the cable itself is a little bit faster, basically.
Exactly.
Cat 7 cables use the same connectors and can plug into standard Ethernet ports.
They just provide faster data transmission and improved performance.
It's a simple upgrade for better connectivity.
And then someday we'll get 6G.
How long away are we from that?
6G is still in the early stages of development, so it might be several years before it becomes widely available.
Researchers are working on it, and it promises even faster speeds and lower latency than 5G.
It will be exciting to see how it evolves. How about
in the connectivity like Bluetooth but newer something modern? Newer
versions of Bluetooth like Bluetooth 5.0 and beyond offer improved range, speed,
and connectivity. Future advancements might include even more efficient power use
and enhanced device pairing.
These improvements can make Bluetooth more reliable
and versatile for modern devices.
It's exciting to see how these technologies continue to evolve.
Yeah, so all of that stuff we talked about will be on the future consoles.
PS6.
Xbox 2, maybe. Exactly. that stuff we talked about will be on the future consoles ps6 yes xbox 2 maybe exactly the next generation of consoles like the ps6 or a new xbox will likely incorporate
these technologies they'll offer improved connectivity performance and overall user
experience it's exciting to think about what they'll bring.
Oh, great. Thank you for your time. I'll talk to you soon.
You're welcome. It was great chatting with you. Talk to you soon.
Pretty awesome.
All right, so that's my little history of Nintendo for today.
