All right. So the Democratic Socialists of America have released their new platform and it has Cubans in Miami saying maybe we'll swim back to Havana.
Among the new stuff, eliminating the United States Senate, replacing the offices of the president and the Supreme Court with entities chosen by and subordinate to Congress and defunding the Department of War.
Wow. It's almost as if they sat down and said, what can we do to?
to make sure they don't run out of stories
during the slow summer season at Fox News Channel.
Not to mention that all of this is added, of course,
to a platform full of existing gems
like a 32-hour work week with no reduction in pay or benefits,
universal rent control,
and an immediate end to any and all deportations.
If Joseph Stalin were alive today,
I'm pretty sure his exact words would be,
holy crap, rain it in a little.
But don't take my word for it.
Here's the sales pitch from DSA members themselves.
The Senate is a very undemocratic institution.
So would you like to abolish the Senate?
That's part of our platform.
And we don't think that's extreme.
It sounds so radical, like abolish the Senate, abolish the Supreme Court, like, et cetera, et cetera.
But it's really, it's not.
Everybody sees that, like, that Trump is super evil.
I mean, every president since the founding of the country has been super evil.
but somehow we have like one that is even more evil.
Whenever people are like, oh, my God, they want to get rid of the president.
I was like, well, I don't know what we would call it in the future.
We could call it the head honcho of whatever, you know?
The head honcho.
Why not master samurai or perhaps boss bitch?
Of course, it would be easy to dismiss these people as just grown-up campus activists.
But listen to how mainstream Dems are talking about the recent.
DSA election wins.
Many who are running under the Democratic Socialist brand or the Progressive brand
are making their case with just extreme passion.
Regulating industries so that they don't dump poison into the water and the air.
They want to call that socialist.
Democrats have got to stop being shy about that term.
I would argue socialism not going to work, but capitalism as we know it doesn't work either.
Hmm, that's a telling moment from Gavin.
He tried to play both sides, like when he claimed to hate fire, but hate it having water around, too.
These Dems may not be calling for abolishing the Senate, but they're not exactly running from the people who are.
And that matters, because these socialist ideas are gaining steam, particularly among younger voters.
In fact, polling suggests that 29% of people 18 to 29 support Democratic.
Socialism and 21% of them support socialism generally.
But instead of mocking them just for a sec, try to imagine some of their frustration.
Admit it.
We all know what it's like to get tired of seeing some guys get really, really rich for doing
what you think is basically no actual work.
While you toil away and make much less.
A lot of young people for it.
and younger also feel like the world hasn't worked out for us the way we expected. Home prices
have dramatically, dramatically, hugely outpaced wages over the past several decades. So when
someone comes along promising the government will fix housing overnight, some people listen.
We should ask why these ideas are resonating and persuade them as to why socialism is not
the answer. The appeal of socialism is that it's always a short-term.
sales pitch. Like, getting a
sociology degree will make college
easier, but you'll eventually end up
homeless.
Your rent's too high,
the government will cap it. College too
expensive, the government will pay for it.
You don't make enough? We'll just make
your employer pay you more.
Can't afford a pony?
We'll tax everyone that owns one and buy ourselves
outies.
Better not.
Every problem has
a simple, immediate fix.
There's just one issue with that, and that's history, which tells us that those quick fixes don't stay fixed for very long.
Price controls become shortages.
Less competition means less investment.
Eventually, the thing that was supposed to make life cheaper ends up making everybody poorer.
That's the equity.
Life sucks for everyone, unless you're in on the scam, like selling Mary Kay.
But we don't have to guess.
From Venezuela to the old Soviet block, history offers plenty of cautionary tales.
But things have gotten so bad for so many that they're willing to try anything, including
apparently ending the Senate, the presidency, and capitalism.
If it would help, I bet you could even convince some people to subject themselves to torture.
The answer is to show them why capitalism works better over the long run, how it's responsible for the largest reduction.
in poverty in human history.
And if we don't start making that case better,
the people promising easy answers could keep winning.
Because today, it's the head honcho of whatever.
Tomorrow, it's on the ballot.
