Hey guys, Gris Katan here, aka Gris Parnell.
This is kind of like a little special Chris's corner that Brian doesn't even know I'm doing.
But I just wanted to very quickly let you know that we have sold 170 out of the 200 tickets for the live show in Vancouver, October 23rd.
Go over to the geysery.com.
And yeah, grab some tickets because they are going to be gone soon.
Bye.
Welcome to guys, a podcast about guys.
I am Brian.
My co-host is a real nasty Nelson.
and Chris James. Hi, Chris. Nasty Nelson.
You're a fucking nasty Nelson, buddy. Is that a pickleball reference? Controversial one, yeah.
Okay, because everything I know about pickleball is from the movie The Dink. Yeah, me too, basically.
I mean, I do not want my wife played it twice. Two times. And said, it's fun. She's like, why don't you play pickleball? I was like, God, I will never, ever in my life play a game called pickleball. It will never happen.
I played it once and I regret to inform me it was a good time but I won't play it again
just because what it portends for society.
Yeah, Tom, we have Tom sex in here because there's no better person to talk about pickleball
with than Tom because he's a tennis guy.
Yeah, he's a tennis guy, man.
You play you play tennis?
I used to play when I was younger a lot and then probably the last time I seriously played
was maybe like five to ten years ago, but I was really into it as well. I played quite a bit.
That's exciting to me that you're a player. Like you play still regularly? Yeah, yeah. I play with a group
of booting these guys about twice a week. That's exciting. No one guy from Spain named Donnell.
And what would you say is this strength? What is the strongest part of your game would you say?
I got a big serve. You got a big serve? Big serve, yeah. Yeah. Didn't you coach to?
That's my strange. I played. I played college.
Nice. So you, you really play. He's a tennis guy. You like know how to play tennis.
I played it pretty high level. Yeah. Like you would kill me at tennis. Yes. I was a competitive junior.
Wow. That's exciting. I would love to play with you sometime and like pick up some tip. What do you mean? No. Nope.
Why would you have any say it? Because you're not going to embarrass this show by losing to Tom at tennis.
I already said he would beat me. It's not, I don't think it would be. It would be.
I'm not looking at it as combative, Chris.
We'd make a formidable doubles team is what I was thinking.
That's what I was thinking.
That's fine.
I'll let that happen.
Maybe we play on the same team or whatever or just like a fun game where we kind of just rally, you know?
We just kind of like hit the ball around a little bit.
I think that would be a lot of fun.
You're not going to humiliate the guys podcast by going out and losing it sports.
We're fucking winners here.
We only play games we can win.
Yeah.
And what games could you win?
What is sports wise, Brian?
I'm interested in this.
What would you say is your top sport?
What's your athletic history, bro?
Yeah.
I played baseball when I was, well, I played T-ball.
And then I played a little bit of baseball when I was in the ninth grade.
I had a few pretty big plays.
One time I got hit the thumb and I made it all the way around the bases and got, I got, like, listen, I'll tell you this.
What do you mean?
What do you mean you got hitting the thumb and you made it all the way?
That's not even possible.
So I was playing baseball.
You just get first base.
You saying that you just kept running?
That's the fucking thing about it too, right?
They were like, it hit the bat first.
You're going to have to keep batting.
So you took, you hit a foul ball and then you hit a home run?
Is that what you're saying?
I didn't, no, I didn't hit.
I got walked.
The next pitch was a ball.
Gotcha.
So you did, you got your free pass and then you stole second.
And I ran a second after another guy hit.
Okay.
And then I ran a third after maybe another guy walked or hit.
So.
And then I rounded home after the next guy hit and I scored a run.
And then I went and I barfed all over my dad and passed out and had to be taken to the hospital.
So your big claim to fame in baseball is that you walked and scored a ride.
That's my sport.
And then you threw up from running too hard.
No, from the thumb pain.
I see.
It was sprained.
Oh, yeah.
My thumb was sprained.
That's what they said at least.
I think they were just telling me that.
It was swollen, though.
I mean, that can hurt a lot when you get hit.
Like, you know, when you're holding the bat and then the ball hits you on the hand or whatever.
That could be a serious injury.
People get injured that way for sure.
Then I wanted to play soccer, but my friends called it gay.
So I never ended up playing soccer.
And then I wanted to play basketball, but my dad said no.
And I wanted to play hockey for a short.
Well, my dad didn't say no.
He said, well, buy you a hoop and you can play it at home, but you're not.
He was kind of like me.
He's like, you're like.
competitively.
Yeah, you're not going to embarrass me on some basketball court.
I guess what he was thinking.
I don't know.
That doesn't sound like him, but he was like, we'll put a court.
Because it's weird not to let a kid play basketball.
Yeah, exactly.
It's not like hockey football.
I kind of get that.
It's like really expensive, lots of equipment, getting up early in the morning.
But basketball is just got to get a basketball.
You can get one for 20 bucks or whatever.
It may be so mad.
It made me so mad because my dad's like, I was a goalie.
I played goalie for Ohio State University, you know, big hockey guy.
He loves hockey.
Played hockey growing up.
That was a hockey.
Yeah.
He loved Canadian, right?
Yeah, he liked it because of it's Canadian.
Yeah, he loves anything that's Canadian.
But he actually played as like a goaltender on Ohio State University.
On the, like a bat.
He wasn't like the main goaltender.
But he was like a backup goaltender.
He played a few games at Ohio State.
That's pretty impressive to play at like the collegiate level of any sport.
I said, dad, I'd like to play hockey.
He's like, I'm not buying all that equipment.
Yeah.
I mean, I get that.
I spent my whole childhood saying how rewarding and great it was for him to play hockey.
And then just, and then just, just pull the rug out from another year.
It sounds like he didn't believe in your ability to get to that level, maybe.
He's saying, like, for me, it was great, but I don't see you ever experiencing that those heights.
I've set too high a bar here.
That's a weird.
I never thought because he also grew up playing drums.
Mm-hmm.
And you know me, I'm a big, huge music guy.
I don't love to play an instrument.
I was like, Dad, get me some drums.
And he was like, no way.
Well, that's not going to play drums in my basement.
Yeah, that's also, drums obviously famously super loud.
Then I asked for a guitar.
Nope.
Nope.
Nothing.
I can't have one.
Just went on down the line and just.
Not giving you that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I remember sitting in a car with him like being like, oh, you know what?
I'd like a bass.
And he was like, oh, well, I'm not going to.
spend that much on Christmas.
It's like, yeah, there's not a noise solution there.
In fact, the rumble of the low end can be kind of pleasant, but it's just too expensive.
Yeah.
I mean, listen, that I understand that.
It's, it is a little bit expensive, I think.
It's a little expensive to, hmm?
It's not bad.
A hockey, you could have bought fucking a full-on used hockey situation.
You know what I mean?
Like a full-on just used hockey set.
and I would have not known it was used.
Well, you kind of, I will say that it does stink pretty bad hockey stuff.
Like people's hockey pads.
But if you buy it used, they clean it and all that stuff.
Yeah.
So they would clean it.
You go to a place and buy it used that's cleaned it, deodorized it.
Bring it to me and be like, hey, we're going to go.
I think what really happened.
I'll tell you what happened with my sporting career and my music career.
My dad didn't believe I would ever finish anything.
And he was probably right because I,
I mean, you know, I didn't graduate high school right away.
Like, I didn't walk at graduation with my friends.
I had to go to fucking summer school.
So, like, I didn't, the first time I graduated was college.
Yeah, but maybe that's not your, I don't want to put that on you because it's like,
it's hard when you're a kid to believe in yourself and your ability to do that stuff if your
parents don't believe in it.
It's almost like they have to be the ones to do it to say that we believe in you.
And then it's like, you know, then you actually maybe can get that kind of.
stuff done um tom what was you you played tennis did what what else did you what else you have sports
basketball baseball and what did you play in football uh line back or garden tackle guard the water
bucket and tackling back comes in there i was i was a nose guard i was a nose guy okay my brother played
my brother played uh football one year and he was the smallest kid in the world asthma and everything
and they were like yeah sure man you can like go out there when they do the kick oh
special teams
All right
I got a bunch of stuff
I don't get to
I don't get to say my sports
I know your sports pool
Yeah I played pool
No I played pool
I played pool
I played basketball
I played soccer
I played baseball
I played baseball and soccer
at a pretty high level
I played as a short stop
in baseball
That was probably my best sport
But yeah
Never like
Never took it too seriously
My friend Jimmy
He was the best
and he made it to like AAA and played on Team Canada's baseball team of the world baseball classic.
It's like a coach in the major leagues now, like a psychological coach or something like that.
They call it the bigs.
Oh, like the guy that combats the yips.
Yeah, exactly.
That's his, he did it for the Toronto Blue Jays.
That's the sickest job in sports, I think.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's such a cool job.
Anyways, he was like, you know, I was decent, but he was like the guy, you know,
like you could tell he was the dude.
He was the bad.
And he was super good at tennis and badminton basketball.
He was just a super athletic guy.
Does he wear coach shirts?
No, I'm not sure.
But yeah, his parents met playing university at like the University of Arizona.
Oh, that's not fair.
Playing tennis and baseball like for that program.
So he had he really had everything going for him, you know?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I have the rules up here in case we run into any disputes.
But one thing I've learned, Tom, when you played, you played and had fun, right?
Yeah, I played and have fun.
Yeah, yeah. So I should say I was not a prolific nose guard. I played for like two years. Oh, no, he's, he's, I think now Brian's ice game all pickleball and had fun. Oh, pickleball. I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about my football ball and a few days. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I played once and, yeah, I had a good time. I kept stepping in the kitchen. They kept calling for him for stepping in the kitchen. Yeah. And that's how you get an assing else. You're going to bake some cookies for us while you're in there.
That kind of, it was that kind of banter. Yeah.
And then I, of course, had to shoot back with, well, I'll stay out of it if I can't handle the heat.
But y'all are not something, something.
Yeah.
Well, I know that that's how.
If they stand too close to the line by the kitchen, that's when you give them a nasty Nelson.
What is a, can you just tell it what's a nasty Nelson?
Yes, I can tell you.
It's, if the guys, it's a related to the purple nurple.
It is not, but it's a bad name.
I'll read the thread I have about from,
Listen, I found the best pickleball place is pickleball for seniors.
Yeah, I think it's mainly a senior's game, right?
Well, no, there's a lot of young people.
Nowadays there is, but it started as a seniors game.
It's like an alternative to playing tennis when seniors couldn't,
didn't have the mobility to play tennis anymore, I think, right?
That's kind of where it started from.
That's the origin, which is funny because they always build it to us, tennis as a lifetime sport.
And now they're like, no, actually you should quit by the time you're 50 and play
baseball.
Yeah.
I mean, it really is bad on your knee.
As you get older tennis is really tough on your knees.
My knees are shot.
Yeah.
Like the stop start,
like just like changing direction like that.
And on concrete too.
Oh man.
It really is just the worst sport for for knees for sure.
People are all blowing out that it was a lifetime sport came from.
Like I go to the gym and squat and it feels like my,
you know,
you're pouring milk on rice crispy is what it sounds like.
You know,
these guys get hurt a lot too.
They're all like,
what brace should I buy?
And I'm like,
you guys are fucking irreparably fucking your legs up.
Because they're like, I don't want to go get it looked at by a doctor.
Is there a good brace I can buy?
And it's like, you should get that.
By a doctor, if you're playing pickleball a lot, it hurts really bad every time you play.
That's a problem.
I would like your thoughts on the nasty Nelson.
Now, the nasty Nelson is, again, you hit the person with the ball, which then if the person gets hit with the ball, it's their fault.
And then you get to serve again or something like that?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's very controversial.
So Nasty Nelson, is it enshrined in pickleball rules or is it more like a colloquialism?
Apparently, it might be against the rules these days.
I see.
So it is, it's not like, I got you.
I got you.
It's something that some people do and it's controversial about whether or not it should count as a point or not or it should be.
The same as when you take the net and tennis and somebody just tease off on you and just like hits it right at you hard.
If it hits you.
It's like legal, but it's kind of poor form.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yes.
And people do not like.
And they say maybe the new rules have kind of cut down on the nasty doughflings.
Oh, God.
But he goes, it's a legal yet controversial pickleball move where the server intentionally
hits the non-receiving opponent with the ball during a serve, earning an immediate point.
I see.
I understand now.
I got you.
Okay.
He goes, for life of me, I can't understand why this is an acceptable thing to do.
I'm about a 2.5, 3.0.
So they go up to four, I believe.
What does that mean?
Five, maybe?
that's their level.
You can get a level.
And who tells you what your level is?
I think you got to have a coach.
Okay.
Yeah, that's,
that tennis is like that nowadays.
Like when I was coming up,
you had USDA levels that went up to like nine was a pro.
And then like,
you know,
maybe five you're starting to get into like,
like pretty good club players,
six,
seven college and whatever.
But now it's like weird.
They do this thing called UTR.
And I don't know if it's a similar thing in pickleball.
But,
and it's like,
not clearly define who gets to decide that or if it's like more self-reported or I see this might be
self-reported so an expert would be a 4.5 plus and it's you've mastered all aspects of the game
and can execute shots with so I think you're you're sort of like uh yeah I'm a I'm a 3.5 or you need
a coach you can have a coach tell you you know I mean you're about 3.5 I know I mean you're about 3.5
I know one guy said a coach told him he was like you're about 2.5 with the mind of a 3.5.
I think that was an insult.
Yeah,
I know we're going to deep gas today again.
He said,
he says you're a 2.5,
but you think you're a 3.
Like that kind of thing.
That's a thing. That's like you run around like you're some sort of a 3.5.
No,
you're a 2.5.
You piece of shit.
Yeah.
He goes and play at a local park,
which is just rec play.
99% of the people are just great and more than half for seniors.
This morning when I joined a foursome,
one of the opponents was an older gentleman.
I use the term gentleman loosely.
This is pickleball for seniors.
so they get a little sassy in here.
I use the term gentleman loosely.
Who mouthed off about how he could do a nasty Nelson
to my partner if he wanted to,
but he wasn't going to.
That's such a badass move.
To just be like, I just want you to know
at any moment I could pull a nasty Nelson on your ass
and there's nothing you could do about it.
But you're not, I'm not going to do it,
but I just want you to know that it's like
that's open for me to do at any point.
This guy does sound like a real.
You have no idea of the hell I could bring you at any moment.
He goes, he mouthed off about you to do a nasty
Nelson, my partner if he wanted to, but he wasn't going to.
Then after the game was over, he went on about how he really could have
blasted us with some shots that we would never have been able to make.
The whole ordeal was, this guy's old too.
I love it.
This guy's an old man who's like, I could have straight fucked you guys off, by the way.
He went on.
The whole ordeal was unnecessary childish and kind of ruin a nice morning for the rest of us.
My partner, who was new to me, had just started playing a few months ago.
And he's actually pretty good.
Would anyone like to share their thoughts on this?
I'm in my 70.
This is just a-
This guy's talking shit to somebody in their 70.
It's so sick, man.
Yeah, just jawing at each other.
I do kind of like that.
I like the passion a little bit.
It's annoying, but it is kind of nice that they're out there like, you know,
they're 70 and they haven't lost their, like, passion for, for,
Jerry says, inability to control their anger.
Yeah.
This guy's probably yelling at Foxx News all day.
We never really grow up.
Yeah, this guy.
Yeah, he's yelling at the TV all day
from politics and shit like that.
This guy goes, someone who says that they can do,
but doesn't do has no credibility.
Yeah, put up or shut up.
Do it.
I want to see you smash the ball at my novice partner,
hit him in the face.
If you're not going to do it,
don't fucking brag about how you could.
Let's see you do it.
Hey, you know,
that would have been so funny
if the guy was like, go ahead and fucking hit him.
I don't care.
He's not me.
You know, it's my partner.
I totally agree about the use of a nasty nelson.
I'm a 57-year-old man who plays four to five times a week, and no one I play with
pulls that cheap shot off.
There's been a few instances while playing with a 30-year-old 5.0 plus instructor has done it to me
and got me very upset.
A fucking 30-year-old guy.
That seems really shitty being like a 30-year-old.
30-year-old in the prime and like a really high-level player and you're smashing some elderly
person elderly people fighting is the best thing ever there's speaking of football there's like a great
joe cap he was like a quarterback for the bc lions he might have played in the nfl as well
but there's like some angelo something is the other guy's name but they they had like some big
rivalry and then they were at some like dinner or some presentation or something
and they're like 70 to 80 years old
and they got into a full on fist fight on stage
and it is just one of the best fucking clips ever
like they're really throwing haymakers
but they're fully elderly
there's something really really hilarious about that
the two golf guys is the ones that always get me
there's these like I can never find the video
I don't know why but they get out of the cart
and they're like ready to fight and it is honestly
the worst fight you've ever seen in your life
yeah there's like something like I know it is dangerous
and arguably more dangerous
Right? Because their bodies are like potentially more brittle and could get injured.
But there's like something kind of cute about it.
Kind of like, you know, when you see these two old men fighting, I, there, my like,
aunt's, uh, partners, he was like an old man and we're at a family reunion.
And the guy told them, they said, oh, the short guys go in the front and this other guy.
Like we did, it was like extended family, but they were both so elderly, like into their 80s for sure.
And the guy was just like, oh,
short guys in the front, that must mean you, like, to this guy might. And then he's just like,
go fuck yourself. Like dead serious into his face. And I was like, this is, this is the stuff I live for.
Like elderly guys. My father-in-law, my grandpa was real mean. Like, he was really mean guy. Yeah.
And I barely, I think I saw him six times in my whole life. But he was just, he would fucking go for it,
man. My sister was watching was pregnant.
And she was watching him one day because he was like at the end of his life or whatever.
And he had to go to the bathroom.
She had to help him go to the bathroom.
And he bitched at her the whole way.
And then when she finally got him sat down, he was like, you're never going to get married.
What are myest things I've ever heard?
That's so good.
You're talking about the two guys fighting on stage.
I used to go to the gym with this guy named Gabbo.
He was kind of like a jacked older dude.
You know, he kind of put you in mind of a Greek.
God, but like aged, you know.
If anybody from Wiseburg hears us, they're just going to be like, I don't know if I'd say
Greek God.
He was a fit older guy.
And he had this rival, this guy Mark, who I guess had married his high school girlfriend,
but married her like 40, 50 years ago, you know.
Yeah.
And he had heard that perhaps there was some trouble in paradise.
And we were kind of just having some locker room talk around the gym.
And one of my buddies said, yeah, well, I don't know.
Mark will whoop your ass if you try to move in there.
And Gabo goes, hell, Mark couldn't hit in high school football.
He can't hit now.
It just had held this contempt for this guy for 40, 50 years.
This guy goes, a nasty Nelson adds another interesting element to the game,
which helps to keep the game more complex as a person's skill level improves.
I'm personally attempting to work on my ATP around the post,
which I find to be more useful and impressive as opposed to hitting my opponent with the ball.
A player who brags about knowing how to do a nasty Nelson but doesn't back up their bravado with actually doing this shot is simply a bore.
Ignore them.
A variety of pickleball shots can either be Googled or looked up on YouTube.
A team recently made the winning point at the U.S. Open Gold Medal 2025 with a nasty Nelson.
Look it up on YouTube.
Wow.
So there's high-level players that are using this.
Yeah.
This guy goes, I love the game, but glad I don't play with some of you.
We'll never see a pro doing nasty Nelson.
It's a cheap shot.
But if you're not good enough to play a decent game,
because you've got to get points any way you can.
I see.
And this is the last old guy.
He's my favorite.
Two of them.
First, Donnie says, I will nasty Nelson somebody laugh, not apologize, and celebrate the win after.
See, that's a particular strain of pickleball player.
It's like, you know, rising grind yuppie, old guy, real estate criminal, which I guess has
some overlap with the rising grind yuppie.
I can see a real estate.
Somebody looking to cheat on their spouse.
Yeah.
I could see a real estate guy yesterday that built a pickleball in his backyard.
It's like, I'm not even that fucking loud, man.
I do it from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
And it's like 8 a.m is some people think 8 a.m. is very early in the morning.
Me, I think 8 a.m. is very early in the morning.
Not for the guy that wakes up at 4 a.m. to read, you know, the 58 laws of power, though.
Oh, yeah. He's having lunch. He's having 8 a.m. lunch that guy.
Maybe I'll just buy all the houses behind me, too.
Yeah. I mean.
He's like, I own the two houses around me. Maybe I'll just buy all the houses behind me.
I was like, I hope the God they don't sell. And I hope they make you dig up your stupid pickleball court,
you piece of shit.
it's so loud it is really loud obviously that's like a well-known thing about it it annoys the tennis
people or whatever there's a park that i would walk by and they'd be playing pickleball all the time
and it's like you hear it from a long way away just that like you know the like hard plastic
up against the hard plastic you make a strong point because for whatever you think about tennis
sonically it's a very pleasant sounding game you know what i mean you the the the the
the swack of the ball and the rubber hitting the concrete and the occasional grunt is fine.
But pickleball is just like annoying.
Like the side.
Yeah.
Totally.
It's that and it's constant.
It's just this constant, especially if there's a bunch of people playing.
There's like a bunch of pickleball court set up.
Like at this part there was.
There was like eight of them at once packed.
Yeah.
And so it's just constant.
It's just that noise, that noise of like hard plastic on hard plastic like one after the
other.
And it's just, it really is like a living beside one would suck, I think, probably.
Like, it would be really annoying.
Gwen had a friend who worked for the Parks and Recreation Department of the neighborhood she grew up in, like, that we lived in.
And they did pickle, they started doing pickleball when they were in high school or whatever.
They didn't.
But the Parks and Rec Department started doing pickleball when it started to take off.
So they started having it over at the elementary school when school was out.
There was like two tennis courts so they could have four courts, plus they had another room for another place.
So they have four or five courts there and they would let these people come and play.
You are buying.
Most of them were senior citizens or like at least like 30.
You know what I mean?
You didn't see a lot of very young people playing, right?
And they had to end it because they were getting into fights all the time.
Like physical altercation fights all so often that they were like, we're not going to do it anymore.
They brought it back recently with like a bunch of new rules and stuff.
But yeah, it's a crazy.
Listen to this.
This is from Reddit.
Today in a game with my regular crowd, I played with a new person.
I mentioned I'm a South Paul.
Let's just communicate.
During the third point, we're up to nothing.
I said, yours in the middle of the point.
And he says, I know when the ball's mine.
I don't need you to tell me when to hit.
It's incredible insecurity.
This is the kind of thing that happens.
the fights and this kind of like caddiness when like three out of the five demographics that
really gravitate to this are the most annoying people on the planet.
Yeah.
I'm leaving out the elderly and most retired tennis players, but like all the real estate
and rising grinders that love this shit.
Yeah.
It feels like because I'm thinking in tennis, obviously there's sometimes arguments in tennis
and stuff like that happens from time of time, but it doesn't seem like it's that.
It seems quite rare because.
It's a non-contact sport.
I always think, like, in a non-contact sport,
there's going to be less propensity for, like, people to be, you know,
getting into each other's grill and shit.
Like, I get it.
You're playing a contact, like, you know, like,
Beer League Seven Aside Soccer or whatever.
There's always fights.
You can watch compilations on YouTube of, like, people fighting,
because they're kicking each other.
Some guy fucking hacks you on the knee or whatever.
But this is a game, I guess, with other than a nasty Nelson,
there's not really, like,
you're not having any contact.
with the other people.
Why are there all these fights and disagreements out?
They act like it hurts too.
But anytime you read about them saying getting hit by the ball, they're like,
and it hurts.
And it's like, no,
it fuck.
Come on, man.
Let's calm down a little bit.
That ball is like hitting a hit with a wiffle ball.
I don't care how hard they hit.
It's got a little holes in it to slow it down.
Maybe in the face.
Maybe in the face it could hurt, I guess.
Maybe.
But even then, it's like getting hit in a face with a fucking nothing.
You know what?
It's got to be the safest.
As far as like the ball paddle.
situation. It's got to be one of the safest things you can do. We made a big mistake on the
disc golf guys episode though, going down the same line because we were like, oh, it doesn't
hurt. It doesn't hurt to get hit with a frisbee. But we were wrong because we were thinking of
like frisbys that you get at the store or whatever. These are like these really hard,
heavy ones that they use. So we did make a mistake there. So I'm always, I'm a little apprehensive,
but I have seen a pickleball. And I think, yeah, just getting hit in the chest.
It would like be a little, a little sting.
It's not a puck or a baseball.
No, I know, I know.
You could throw one up.
I would let somebody throw one right at my face.
I don't give a shit.
How could, how bad could it be?
Well, he goes, wow.
Hey, somebody's floating ideas for the Vancouver Live show.
October 23rd.
October 23rd in Vancouver.
You whack me in the face.
I'll do it.
I don't care.
I'll get a pickle ball set and just hit the ball directly.
We'll do every sports ball.
Yeah.
Oh, hey, come on.
I mean, a baseball is, I've been watching a lot of baseball lately.
And God damn it.
Like, I've been going to Vancouver Canadiens games.
So, like, watching it up close.
And Jesus Christ, talking about things that would fucking hurt.
Like, those guys totally 98 miles per hour.
Yeah, the baseball is tough.
But a pickleball can't be.
He goes, wow, okay, just trying to communicate, especially since I'm a lefty.
No problem, though.
Thanks for telling me.
And as I said, I don't need your help.
He went to serve and asked what the score was.
I said, I thought you didn't want my help.
Oh, geez.
That's a different thing, I feel like.
He walked off the court pouting.
I've been playing sports my entire life.
Every coaching teammates says communication is fundamental.
Ditto in every clinic and video I watch regarding pickleball.
I realized my own snark about the score didn't make things better,
but he did say, I don't need your help.
Thoughts?
This guy goes to pros use comms to win.
Tell him that next time.
Tell him that.
That probably would have done well.
That would have smooth things over if you're like, by the way, the pros use comms to win.
He probably would have been like, oh, it's like communication.
Communication.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Is that the shorthand for it?
Oh, yeah.
It's cool.
It just does seem weird at this guy.
It sounds like I have a walkie-talkie.
He goes, the game's no fun without comms.
As a lefty, myself, I just tell everyone I'll take a middle unless I'm stacking.
And he goes, don't want, don't some of the right-handers you're playing with also want to hit the middle ball?
He goes, depending on who I'm playing with, sure, I just communicate what I'll do before
the play.
And if we both want the middle, then we call it.
A lot of players are fine if I take it.
Having a decent backhand helps.
And then this guy gives some great advice.
We yell Elsa for, let it go.
Let it go.
Brian, I really, you had to know when you're reading that that I was going to hate that.
Well, there's a few of those in here.
this guy goes fellow lefty here who always makes calls out a habit my call is typically yours as opposed to mine
if he objects to you make in the call i'd ask him to make the calls instead he sounds like a literal loser
he sounds like a literal loser yeah this guy doesn't even probably have a job
this guy sounds like he doesn't even have a job these guys are so catty yeah they really are
well this guy goes similar situation on a court i play on wendy doesn't want communication but she's
sure to yell at everyone.
She's a total drag to the pickleball mojo.
When she's there, she's always fighting with her partners and the opposing players.
Thankfully, she doesn't show up much.
I finally had it and asked her why she's always fighting with everyone.
After I made that comment, I proceeded to around the post the ball right behind her in a quarter pocket.
I say on the cake.
Oh, shit.
That guy's a good storyteller, by the way.
Because he gave her, he told us her name.
Yes.
Which is a good, you know, he knows and this lady I play with.
He's like, gave the name to.
to build the story out a little bit.
And then this guy goes, obviously you're right about communication, as you alluded to.
Any team sport is based on it.
I, you guys, I could not get enough of guys saying, like, listen, I used to play football.
I think I know how sports works.
Like, it's a lot or basketball.
They're all used to play some sport.
And I can guarantee that a lot of them played the same level of sport I played.
Oh, for sure.
Or high school, maybe high school.
but washed out by the time you had to try it out.
I don't know about the same level.
You just,
he played at a pretty high level,
I hit under my bed.
I threw my glove in the trash.
Your greatest sporting moment was getting a walk,
scoring a run,
and then vomiting all over your dad.
I think my greatest sporting moment was when my stepmom one day
said, if you leave your baseball glove on a table again,
I'm going to throw it in a trash.
So I purposely left it on the table the next day.
So she'd throw it in a trash.
so I wouldn't have to go to baseball.
Stroke a genius, but...
Hated bad.
Then I ended up getting yelled at for it and everything,
and she didn't throw it away.
It's bullshit.
This guy goes obviously right about...
He goes, normally I wouldn't even comment on this,
but if you really asked you the score after saying what he said,
man, that's the setup you dream about to roast him.
George Costanza over here.
Yeah, I've been dreaming of this setup.
I mean, this is...
Salivator.
One of the best days of my life that this happened.
This guy goes, this actually happened.
Oh, this is so good.
Recently observed a mixed doubles tournament in Grand Haven, Michigan,
held in conjunction with their Coast Guard festival, the scenario.
Kevin and Karen playing in a close game,
the other team appears to have the momentum advantage,
and during the point, they launch a lob from their own baseline.
Kevin immediately yells out.
Any lob from the baseline is automatically out.
all this without even turning his head to observe the ball, which landed over a foot in play.
Karen obviously intimidated by our partner, Kevin, remained silent.
As an observer, I yelled that the ball was in.
He screamed back, shut up.
You have no saying the matter.
My input is part of the rules.
This is a self-reporting game for people that don't know.
It's all self-reporting unless it's pro.
Then they have a- Yeah, of course.
That's like in regular tennis.
if you're just playing, you don't have a, you don't have judges, you don't have somebody who's like a line judge.
So you have to self.
Yeah.
In college tennis, you call your own lines.
And part of the game is the gamesmanship of like when it's cool to rook the other guy and not, you know, like, that's just part of it.
Yeah, yeah.
And that's where I guess the fighting does happen in tennis if you're playing at a not, you know, like where it's just like, hey, that was in.
And you're saying, no, it was out.
And it's just like, but it was in, you know?
Like, and you're like lying about it clearly.
because you couldn't, you know, you couldn't get to it or whatever.
It is.
Because like I think for me, I did play sports with my friends for fun growing.
Really dumb shit.
Like California kickball with Diamond Jim Dandy.
We called it Matt Ball.
We also played football in the street, two-hand tag football.
I was often the quarterback or the running or the wide receiver because that was a great catch.
Did you ever play baseball with a tennis ball?
Yeah.
We called it.
Well, it was called it.
Indian ball and you would hit
you hit the tennis ball
as far as you could and then whoever
got it you put the bat down and whoever got it you had to roll
the ball and hit the bat while it was on the ground. If you hit the bat
it's your turn to hit Indian ball.
Okay. That's what we call it.
Yeah, yeah. I'm sure it's a different name now.
You know, I'm sure that it is.
I'm sure. I mean, although
I will say this, my daughter
went to daycare in 2006, 2007.
And they're still calling at that?
No, but they played what we called Stuck in the Mud.
Mm-hmm.
Where you, it's a freeze tag.
Yeah.
But in order to be unfrozen, you have to crawl through the legs of the frozen person.
I thought this was going in to smear the direction.
Yeah, well, we played down a lot too.
Yeah. But she's in school and she comes home.
I'm like, hey, what did you do today at daycare?
She's like, we played Chinese tag.
I was like, no, you didn't.
You can't be playing Chinese.
Even I know that's wrong.
We played a very American form of tag, actually.
We played that tag too when I was a kid.
Not a single Chinese kid in our neighborhood.
Well, he goes, as an observer, I yelled that the ball was in.
He screamed back, shut up.
You have no saying to matter.
My input's part of the rules.
I agreed, but I still caught him out on it.
the opposing team questioned his call but he insisted the ball was out for the aforementioned reason they were forced to reluctantly accept this call for that point thankfully they won the match what the hell
and then this guy goes first reply next five balls from the idiot are out even if they land in the center of the kitchen
oh my god that's yeah that's how you start that's how you end up in an elderly fist fight this is how you
this is how it escalates.
I'm starting to see it now where it's just like,
oh, he called it out when it was clearly in.
So now I'm just going to say every single one of his shots is out,
no matter of like in the most obvious way.
It's very confrontational.
It's very 12 year.
It's as it's 12 year old.
Even by the time you're 16,
you're like maybe this isn't like the best idea to start,
you know,
starting shit with another guy while you're playing something.
Like in that way.
Obviously,
had guys when we played sports growing up that cheated. Trent cheated all the
fucking time. That kid, he was the worst. He's the one I used to tell you about.
He would call us all names and then take off running. He was the fastest runner so we couldn't
catch him. Oh, yeah. So maddening.
Oh, fuck. In tennis, though, you got cheated by grown men.
Yeah, yeah. Hey, sorry, guy, I let lots over the hill.
Oh, yeah. After you hit like the most perfect server you're like.
Yeah, yeah. When we play tennis, when we
played tennis in high school, I wish I kind of would have learned a little bit about it,
but instead we hit the ball over the fence on purpose and then told the teacher we had to go
get it and sat back there and smoke cigarettes. A lot of your stories I find from high school
involve you finding a reason to be able to go and smoke cigarettes. Most of them. 99% of what I was
doing in high school. I said at the beginning, I did not walk at my graduation. I was smoking a lot of
cigarette. Steve was the real smoker. Steve was the real, he was, this guy was incredible. He's
smoking a classroom while teachers teaching. Yeah, that's, that's incredible. Yeah. He smoked in study
hall every day. He was let there was this door that inexplicably sucked the smoke in the door.
And he would just lay down by the door and smoke cigarettes through the whole study hall in the
room while the teacher's there. I was like, man, you are a pro dude. Smoking Steve, is smoke and
Steve, did he do anything else at all? Or like, do we know him from any other store?
He worked on his car.
He had a nice car.
Okay.
He had a Nova that we sat in a lot.
Okay.
That's a smoking gas car.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Seventy-9 Nova.
He was Theo's brother.
He was Theo's brother.
Probably better friend of mine than Theo, really.
Okay.
He's in my grade.
Theo is a very well-known character.
Well, he gave me a certain name.
This guy goes, this guy goes, illegal serve our point.
Illegal serve R point.
Side out.
Thank you.
Thank you.
come again.
What?
Did he give you, Quiber?
Quieber, yeah.
I had that question.
I'm sorry.
It might have been,
it was one of,
they yelled it out of their window
at their house and it just stuck
for the rest of my life.
Mm-hmm.
It really did.
This guy goes,
I don't think you're allowed
to call illegal serves.
That's for the referee
and professional pickleball
line calls are for the players.
So,
finally somebody is in the right here.
He's saying,
these are the fucking rules.
But wait a second.
This is not professional pickleball
that they're talking about.
Yeah, but they're in a tournament.
So somebody is,
will be calling, they do have somebody that's calling serves? No, in tournament sometimes,
I think it's a self-reporting sport in tournaments often too. Yeah. I think like there's professionals
that have, that have somebody calling them. Like at the U.S. Open that were heard about earlier.
They would obviously, they would have line judges that would be calling all the points probably.
You know, that is right? I mean, because so much of this is confrontation about that. You know what I mean? About like,
okay this guy calls it out he knows it's not out it's pure cheating and it's like you guys are all like
like i said you guys are all like 35 and up why are you cheating like it's insane to cheat at sports
when you're that age and you're not like taking steroids to be a pro football player people are just
competitive though i am no but like they have that weird competitiveness where like i don't i don't think
I have it anymore, but I did for sure, where it's like, I just wanted to win the thing that I was playing.
It was like important to me. I grew up playing sports and it was just important to me to win.
But you're right, though, in the fact that I did kind of lose it as I got older, where I stopped being so competitive in that way.
Yeah, it's just such instinct. This guy goes true, but unfortunately for Kevin and Kara, both of their next two serves were in the kitchen.
They really should drill some more on it. And this guy goes, really, a guy serves overhand and you're not going to call it illegal serve.
That's the other thing. No overhand.
Yeah, I know that from the dink, right?
I remember that from the dink.
They talk about it.
You can't smash it like in tennis?
No, I think you can't.
Not on a serve.
You can't serve overhand.
You can serve.
You have to serve underhand.
Serve is underhand.
But yeah, you know, you can smash it.
You can definitely smash it.
Yeah.
Tom?
I can't remember exactly what was.
I kept getting called out for like my inexperience.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's what Katie said.
She was like the whole time I played, they were like, that's illegal, that's illegal.
And she was just like, I don't think I'm ever going to pick this.
I can't do it?
Yeah, she's like, can we get Brian?
Yeah, she goes, can we get Brian?
They asked her if they could get me to play.
I said, no.
I will not play pickleball.
I will not play a game called pickleball that has a nasty Nelson.
Yeah.
It's just so uncool.
Can I tell you all my moral sort of apprehension to it is it's also kind of like the Mormon church.
It's a real estate scheme masquerading as a burgeoning sport.
That is true.
Because if you look at it's like, oh, you mean to tell me that there's like, I read this story one time about there was like this stretch of real estate, like some of the most sought after real estate in the world, like Madison Avenue, New York or some, is something like that.
And they just, this guy bought all this up to put in pickleball courts.
I'm like, there's just no way that that would be used for this.
Like, is there like some sort of money laundering angle to this?
or like, why are rich dickheads like kind of like flock into this like moths to a flame,
yeah?
I'll tell you, I looked it up and I found it interesting that the game was invented in 1965.
Really?
And it is strange.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And me and we went to, uh, in Seattle.
So they might have been playing it in Seattle all that.
Although Chris would know if they were.
Yeah, no.
I mean, it definitely.
only became popular within the last like 15 years.
Probably less than that.
I feel like it's exploded in like five to ten.
Yeah, five to ten is probably like that's when I would have assumed it got invented then.
Honestly, that's very surprising to me to find out that it was invented, you know, almost
60 years ago or whatever.
We went to get Gwen's shoes at Dick's sporting goods.
And this is probably 10 years ago, maybe even a little longer or a little shorter.
I don't remember.
But a guy fucking walked up to us and was like,
It's the fastest growing sport nation.
It's called pickleball.
You ought to get, I can.
That is how they pitch it to you.
They were like, listen, get with it or get left behind.
It's like they're treated like AI or something.
Which, which, which, it has some parallels.
If you really dig into it.
And it's like, I heard also, like the other sad thing, I think the thing that bums me out a little bit is like, like, like Gwen played tennis in high school.
And I just, and she liked playing tennis.
and I just think like
oh man you're like taking away the tennis courts
and it feels like a way
to squeeze
when you say like real estate
it does feel like a way to squeeze
more
it's an encroachment on the commons
that's exactly my pet peeve is when
like thankfully the city of Lexington
where I live is like they've got
separate pickleball courts
at the park closest to my house
like demarcated for it
but I hate when they
put the pickleball
lines on the tennis court so you have to compete with these dickheads for court time.
I'm sorry.
Not every pickleball is a dickhead.
I should say that.
Well, it's okay.
But you're a tennis guy, Tom.
It's a, you guys have a big rivalry.
I think the pickleballers understand where you're coming from.
As a tennis guy, I mean, it's, it's, you guys, you're going to have some animosity
towards each other.
And I think they, they accept that.
Even the good piccolors.
Part of that animosity, too, is one of the LeBron James-esque figures of pickleball is a guy
named Jack Sock, who used to be a professional tennis player.
And it was quite good to like sort of the mid-auts and then like the early 2010s.
But he's also the guy that entered that sham fucking doubles tournament with the billionaire guy
Bill Ackman.
Oh, really?
It was Bill Ackman's doubles partner that like the ATP just like turned a blind eye to the fact
that this guy fucking sucks and is nowhere near a pro level.
And like just let that go on.
And that kind of threatened the legitimacy of tennis for like a hot second, you know,
like a lot of tennis commentaries, Andy Rodick and some of these guys were really rightly pissed about
that and so was I.
Yeah, because they got to work their way.
Andy Rodick was in the dink as well, by the way.
Yeah, he's a pickleball guy too, but I feel like, but the pickleball thing to me is like
there was a tennis play, a tennis club here, tennis racquetball club here.
Yeah.
And now when you drive by, it's basically, it's indoors.
So I can't see inside and it's a club.
So you got to have a membership.
But now it's the main thing on the sign is pickleball.
It's not tennis anymore.
And it's not racquetball.
It's pickleball.
So you have to imagine it's an indoor thing with a finite amount of space.
So some of the tennis courts are now because, again, you can put four, you can put eight people on a tennis court with pickleball.
You can have more.
You can charge more.
You can get more memberships now because it requires less space.
And that's happening.
now too. Like at this point now, places are opening. Like, I go to a pickleball place to play
darts. The place I go to play darts is a pickleball place, mostly. And then they have the darts
to keep score for you because you're too stupid and not a keep score. Um, so, uh, this guy goes,
my high school doubles partner was great at this. Other side makes a questionable bullshit call.
He challenges. They lean on it. Next ball at land center of court, looks him straight in the eye.
out they protest that's crazy he keeps staring right in the eyes and says it's our call if there
were a persistent line called disputes the high school tennis rules when were then coaches would be asked
to both adjudicate for the rest of the game so he'd ask if they wanted that they usually didn't
you play a bullshit game you have to deal with other bullshit game awesome if you can cite the actual
rule book to the douche after the game so that he is one of the I mean that is like so to have
the ball land right in the middle of the court and just be like, no, that's out. And it's my call.
And you can, hey, we can do it a different way or we can do it this way. I mean, that is like,
that's a, that's a fight starting thing. Because I think some people do cheat, but also maybe some,
you know, on a close shot, it's like, maybe you actually do think it's in and you make a mistake.
And you're like, oh, I think that's in. And they're like, no, it was out. And you're like,
no, from my angle it was in. And then it's, or out or whatever. And then it's just like, now you're
being super confrontational with that person when maybe they weren't trying to do that.
Maybe they just made a mistake.
Well, this guy does say it's cheating.
Not much you can do for that call without a referee.
Retaliation call their shots out can be done or complain to the tournament director
or ask the crowd to start filming so you can post videos online of their bad call.
That's probably the best way to do it.
Grab the microphone at center court and just tell, can everyone please bring your phones out?
We need to document this.
Yeah.
Scott accountability.
This is one of those.
Because we see them every once in a while, like almost every episode of guys.
This is some of the worst advice I've heard.
That one tell everybody to start filming it and post it online to call out their cheating.
Like the idea that someone's going to think twice and be like,
well, I don't want to have a viral pickleball cheating moment.
You know, once you're immortalized as a pickleball cheat, that's hard to put that.
Oh, yeah.
Back in the bottle.
Get like kicked out of your friends.
friend group. I saw a video
of you. Cheating it. Biggleball.
He has no like to tell you. Yeah, you show
up at the barbecue and
everyone's just kind of like talking
amongst themselves and looking over their
shoulder at you. And then the
host just comes over and says, man,
you're going to have to leave. Hey, I'm sorry.
We saw the video, man. We saw
the video of you.
Classless to say the least.
Oh, there was a guy
and the thread didn't end up
being good. But this guy was like,
is there any way we can add some class to people?
It made me laugh so hard.
This guy goes, he does, he goes, he has no right to tell you to shut up either.
And the guy goes, he does.
Spectators are explicitly forbidden in the rule book to provide input into calls, even if asked.
Wow.
And then this guy cites the rule.
Unsolicited input.
Spectator comments or shouts regarding a line call carry no official weight.
And the players are required to ignore them.
He can ignore the call, but can't ask someone.
to shut up.
So if the rule book actually doesn't say he can say to shut up, this is what this guy's saying.
The rule book says you can ignore it and you should ignore it, but it doesn't say anywhere
in the rule book that he can tell me to tell you to shut up and make you feel bad.
If I were there, my response would be make me, cheat me, POS.
These guys, these guys love to fight.
They're honor.
And a guy goes, I wish you.
you were there, you must be bigger than me.
This guy's a little...
So this guy's like, I wish you would have beat the crap out of some of a little baby.
This guy's a little pencil neck.
He's like, yeah, I would have said that.
But whenever I confront someone, they beat the absolute living shit out of me.
Please, can I play with you, sir?
Like, will you be my bodyguard?
Oh, yeah.
Just bringing this real jacked-up, dude, is your pickleball partner because everyone's
bullying you on the corner.
Yeah, say something now.
Yeah.
Oh, you think that's out?
Hey, Thor, why don't you?
Yeah, let's see what Thor has to say on the matter.
Ricky says, because the player's going to play, play, play, play, play, play, play,
cheater's going to cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat, baby, I'm just going to shake, shake, shake, shake it off.
I shake it off.
He's guys are simultaneously so aggressive and also so fucking corny.
This guy goes psychological war for.
That's the only words he put in there.
So now he's like, listen, you're playing pickleball.
There's two sports.
There's a psychological warfare.
Yeah.
It's a game fought on two fronts.
Yeah.
This guy goes, none of your business best to stay out of it.
And this guy goes, I don't know.
The integrity of the game is very much everybody's business.
Pickleball, when you think of it, is built on the integrity of a system where players are expected to fairly call the lines without that.
I won't say that the whole system collapses.
but it turns into a very different less friendly game.
Now, Brian, you would cheat, right?
Because we talked about it before in pool guys that you don't really care about the honor of the game.
It's doing whatever you can to win.
No, that's not even fair on pool guys.
I said I wouldn't not.
I said, I never said I would cheat, never cheated at pool.
I believe what I said was if somebody breaks a rule, like, okay, so Tom, here's what happened.
I see.
You're right.
You are right.
If someone breaks a rule, you would call.
call it out to win, even if it's not necessarily an honorable thing.
Yeah, because a guy hit a ball that was very obviously to the ball in the pocket he was going
to hit him, but he didn't call it because it was like, oh, this is pretty obvious and he just hit it.
And then the guy didn't call it. He's like, you know what? It's fine. I knew where you were going to hit
the ball or whatever. But then he lost the game. But then his team captain was like, no, we can't do that.
We have to, you know, like you're losing us the game here. He didn't call the pocket.
So you should call him out on it. And you should, we should, we should, we should,
win that game. That's what he was saying. Now, you are a pool guy. I like playing pool. Yeah.
No, I'm Tom. Yeah, I'm a Phillians guy too. Yeah. So you would would, what I'm interested? I'm most
interested in your opinion on this. What would you do if it was very obvious that the guy was,
you know what I mean? It's a straight on shot. I'm not going to like make a stink about that.
In a tournament though. And that's the thing. It's in a tournament. Look at, listen. I would make a joke
be like, oh, didn't call it, ha, ha, but then I'd shake his hand, be like, you would, thank you, Tom.
I appreciate that. And I'm vindicated for all the people who agreed with Brian, by the way.
And I will say, players going to play, players play. That's what I would say. That's all.
This guy goes, uh, I hear you, but unfortunately unless crowd line calling is agreed upon ahead
of time or somehow in the rules, it must be left up to the people on the court, in my humble opinion.
It goes, I think we all agree. O.P. can't challenge Kevin's call. But I still think it's fine to call out Kevin for being a
jerk on something everyone can see.
And then this guy goes, sure, if he wants to start a fight, go ahead.
Sounds like a lot of them do.
Now, here's a lot.
Well, then this guy replies it goes, more people should start fights with jerks, in my
opinion.
I'm not saying take a swing at the guy, but I think it helps anybody to always write a blank
check for bad behavior.
So this guy's like, listen, I wish there was more fights.
And then I'm reading these posts and I'm like, there probably needs to be less
fights.
This is like, listen, if this was basketball or something,
imagine this is something that young black men played
and this was going on at the courts all the time.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
Like where people are getting into fights and confrontation and stuff like,
how would that be-
The things like the conservatives would be saying about that.
Yeah, yeah.
How would conservatives react to that?
It's kind of like I lived in this, you know,
pretty much all white suburb of downtown Columbus when Gwen was growing up.
and uh every hall every trick or treat night right there'd be people just drinking everywhere
just walking around town drinking like there's no open like there's no laws about having an open
yeah yeah well if that had i had more relaxed attitudes about my ever show chris i but here
in downtown so you know i i would walk here a lot i like being downtown i like seeing what's going on
they're arresting people all the time for open container out here because they were undesirable people.
Now, if you've been drinking a Molson or a Labat Blue, that might not would have happened.
You could have said, well, I'm from Canada where that's.
A Sleman's honey brown log or whatever.
Yeah.
I bought this at Loblaws.
Well, they don't really.
Well, maybe they do.
Maybe they do in Ontario.
We don't really sell alcohol and beer at grocery.
I bought these Loblaws on Graham.
You get them at the B.
at the BC liquor store, honestly.
are Colbert.
There's probably...
There's it in Yale town.
They're everywhere.
They're liquor stores.
Where do you go on?
Is there a good one on Homer?
I mean, probably I don't drink alcohol, so I don't really know where they all are.
My favorite one's on Bloor and Queen.
That's in Toronto.
Listen, I know a lot of streets.
We can go all day.
Ryan loves Canada.
Not like my dad.
I do like it up there.
This guy goes,
dial down the yelling for fuck's sake, especially in rec play. Pro players yell in shirt because
Bickleball's not just a sport. They have to create drama for a TV series now too. I don't know,
man. I don't know about that. I don't think it's like, I don't think it's like there's a reality show
being filmed. And so they're like the producers are telling them to like, I don't think that's the
case. I think they're just more competitive because they're playing for real prizes or whatever, right?
This guy could possibly, this is a type of guy too, this guy could possibly be a wrestling fan
who then believes that every sports will work.
Like that there's so many wrestling fans that are like, yeah, the NFL, that's just, that's all it works.
Well, more of us just regular sports fans too are arriving at those conclusions.
Yeah, basketball.
With the proliferation of the Colchies and the draft kings and all the shit.
Oh, yeah, that is a big, that is, it's totally true how much it's taken over.
you start to wonder about something.
We hear it in NBA all the time, though.
And the NBA one is like not surrounded around, it's not around betting.
It's just around like, well, the NBA wants this team to win.
The draft.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The NBA draft is insane.
Yeah.
Well, it was a little iffy.
I will say the Dallas Mavericks getting the first overall pick right after they traded away when Cooper Flagg was available as a consensus number one-one pick.
And then they traded away Donchitz and they got it with like a 1.2% chance.
and they got the first overall picked up.
That was a little iffy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think that's why I think, yeah, because like if you old wrestler guys, I would, I would just listen to them.
And they'd be like, they would just, the way they think about sports is the way they think about wrestling.
And I don't think like, I don't think basketball is like a work in the sense that like they know who's going to win every game.
I don't think the games are like super,
but I think that I just can't imagine the referees being in a meeting
and then being like, hey, I need you to call more fouls on.
I see, I kind of think that's.
They have NBA refs who have been caught in serious gambling rings who are most definitely doing that.
And then there was the big, it was actually, it had to do with poker games too,
that Chauncey Billups was involved in.
I read, I watched this video about it about them like using.
these tables, technology and stuff to literally cheat these rich people out.
Like the mafia was involved in stuff.
But it also involves sports betting.
And there's some really classic clips of like NBA players who got caught in this.
Terry Roseer.
Terry Rosier.
There's like this one clip.
I don't think it's Terry Rosier or this one.
It's this one clip where the guy is like, the game is over.
They're losing by like 12 points, but they need like two points to make the over.
And he just like.
Blake Beasley when he goes to...
He grabs the board and he just goes to coast,
like, just like goes like full 100% effort
to like get this meaningless layup at the end of the game.
And then with the information you have after,
it's a really funny club.
No surprise.
He got caught shaving points.
As did end days.
Yeah, there's been several guys get busted.
There's a guy, there's a guy,
Lucas Peketa in soccer.
He played for like West Ham, I think, in the Premier League.
And he was doing this betting thing about him getting a yellow card or whatever.
And he just goes and kicks a guy at the end of the game.
It's like the most obvious shit ever.
Well, I think, I think that in my mind, it is a thing about like,
I can't imagine that I guess what I'll say is,
I can't imagine that put gambling aside, which it's all gambling, right?
but that the NBA has a person they want to win
that they then tell the referees at the beginning of the season
we need to make sure these people are at least in the playoffs.
I don't think they juice the games but I don't think I don't think they could do that
because I think the refs would one of the refs would be like no that's bullshit and they
would come out and say it publicly or whatever like I don't think that there's but yeah
definitely feels like there's certain things that happen where there are like certain
markets or whatever where it's you.
You know, it's, and there's like certain things that they can do as well that are like openly cheating, which is like, was it Lamello ball?
He just like grabbed Bam out of bio's leg and like pulled it in like the wildcard game or whatever.
And it should have been a suspension for sure, but then there's no suspension because they want him playing because it's better for the ratings and stuff like that.
There's definitely make allowances for certain players like that.
And I did hear, I heard Evan Turner former Ohio State.
I say one time that.
We love him.
There was an understanding that if you were playing like LeBron or one of the name guys,
like you had to win by 10 to win by one.
Because like the sort of 50-50 calls and stuff tended to favor like the name guys.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
And that's and who knows if that's even like a work or more.
That's just like happens in soccer too with like messy.
It's kind of a bias toward.
It's a bias because the refs are just like in awe that they're.
This guy's awesome.
This guy's awesome.
awesome and I want to be I want to do I want to like help him like he's like you know I'm yeah well I definitely
and yeah we don't get into it too much because we won't get into the foul baiting stuff and Shay SGA and my bias will
come through let's go back to pickleball for seniors again for a little fun this is bob bad experience
with aggressive players and intermediate pickleball this is for seniors this is a senior man
hello guys I don't usually post much but I have to say today I probably had the worst
experience of my life in rec play pickleball. I'm an intermediate player and I was playing with
an intermediate open play. I've played today with the nastiest bunch of women I've ever seen
in my life. Seniors. You guys got to understand these are seniors. I was not prepared for how much
anger and aggression there is in this sport. It's insane. It's almost all that. Like I couldn't find
anything else.
It was like,
I found people
little less comp,
well,
I guess citing the rule book
back and forth
as confrontational.
Yeah,
that's like more passive,
aggressive or whatever.
Yeah,
he goes,
the nastiest bunch of women
I've ever seen in my life.
One actually turned around to me
and said,
all I care about is winning.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
You don't believe
with these broads say.
I love the idea of this blue hair, 75 year old woman, just turning in the middle of the game,
all I fucking care about is winning.
And this guy being like, what the fuck?
Yeah, what is wrong with doing here then, Bob?
You know, it's not here for.
He goes, they were yelling at each other, fighting with each other, arguing score, eye rolling was the least of it.
I kept looking at them and just shake my head and disbelief.
Now, this doesn't have any bearing on most women.
Thank you.
Now,
Thank you, Bob.
It ain't all love.
Seminist Bob.
Thank you, Bob for recognizing.
That's an ally.
That's an ally, right there.
Not all women.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Okay.
I play with a lot of girls who have a good attitude and are fun to play with.
And they're good.
But this lot was just unbelievable.
It is what it is, I guess.
So.
Yeah.
I love that he called them.
women until he was like I met some very nice girls and it's like oh come on Bob
Bill says I'm currently being shut out by a group like that even though I play nice most
times most times sounds like you had an incident or two yeah he says he's being
shut out by a group on the wrong day though most of the times I yelled at him like five times
we've played 10 yeah
They should know yesterday I was playing with a woman who laughed and whooped when I missed a shot.
So I did the same for her.
She's quiet today.
Showed her.
These, they are, it really is.
It's like, hey, you do that to me.
I'm going to do that to you right back.
That's like a big thing with these guys, you know, like you call it out when it was in.
I'm going to do the exact same thing to you.
You're going to laugh at me.
I'm going to laugh at your fucking face.
Yeah.
He goes, she's quiet today.
I'm next to the courts with the dog part being shut out today.
Women don't know how to do friendly trash talk.
Everything's so serious with them.
Oh, I see.
So what,
there was some friendly trash talk going down and he took it too far and said some real nasty shit.
And now they don't want to play with them anymore.
I believe that is what happened.
I believe he calls him on a bitch.
I just believe that it sounds like something that guy would say,
John replies.
It's a picture of him.
him on his boat.
John replies
it goes,
it sounds like,
John replies,
he goes,
sounds like they need to get laid.
He's talking about like some 75-year-old women.
Then for some reason,
directly after that,
he goes,
they need to get laid.
Oh,
maybe he thought it didn't go,
the post didn't go through.
So he re-did the post.
How old is he in the photo?
He's very old.
Very old guy. He's like one of those old guys on a boat.
An old guy on a boat being like sounds like these ladies need to get laid.
What a pickleball disagreement.
Wow.
I once had a similar experience with that type of behavior and I shut it down quickly.
Oh my God.
Most of the players were completely out of control with bad behavior and bad language,
which I really had a problem with.
the language is, but with the language
I've heard before.
I've heard words before.
This guy's like, listen, man, I'm not, it doesn't,
I don't get, I don't get like stressed out or
scared when people do swear words. I've heard
them all before. I mean, I've heard all of them.
I watch rated R films and
everything. It's not even a big deal
to me.
I don't like it in my music.
Yeah, that's, well,
it's not music at that point, though.
That's true. That's
as soon as they say an FAA
music. It's not music. I'm out. I was not playing at that particular time waiting for my paddle
call. So when the game was over, I stood up on a bench and said, time out, time out. I need to say
something. I see that you are very passionate about pickleball and I appreciate that. But whenever I'm
playing with you all and I will be coming in here often, please keep in mind. Don't get encouraged
and throw that foolishness towards me because whatever day that I'm here playing is not the right day.
And I'm definitely not the right one.
So please don't be encouraged towards me.
Gave that speech.
And then I grabbed my paddle, went and stood in my square and said, let's play some pickleball.
That game I played you didn't hear a peep.
Yeah, everyone just looking at each other like, what the fuck just happened?
What is up with that guy?
I mentioned there was a lot of talking after you left, sir.
I will say that.
A ton of it. Hey, can we ban this guy? Is it possible that this guy doesn't come back? That was too
weird. That was fucking weird when he did that. It's an incredibly weird thing.
It probably didn't happen. Yeah, it's not exactly the way he said it or whatever. He probably was just like, hey, you know, but he like tried to tell a story to make it seem cooler, but he did the opposite. He made it seem weirder.
Yeah, very weird. Yeah, yeah. I hit a lot of pop-ups and I was a mess, but nobody said a word.
I came back the next week.
It was great.
Still had a lot of camaraderie,
but much more of a non-hostile type of thing.
So now they're like,
now this guy is like,
I changed the culture of the pickleball court.
Everything's different now.
He did,
he had an important speed,
like a historical speech almost.
Yeah,
it was an MLK style.
It was something that changed the course of history
in that pickleball court.
Yeah.
It was enough of them.
He couldn't take it anymore.
Yeah.
I'm not,
hey,
he's like the guy at the end of network.
I'm not.
I'm not, hey, when I'm here, it's not the day and I'm definitely not the guy.
Such a funny thing to say.
Sometimes I just have to let the group be aware of their behavior, which is not appropriate all the time.
So I play with that group a lot and they laugh all the time because they remembered.
Okay.
This guy goes, watch the movie Mean Girls.
Mean girls grow up to be mean women.
It's an older reference of a movie.
We haven't thought about mean girls in a while.
But he's saying that women, he's reminding us that women can be mean as well.
Every now and then.
Yeah.
And he's also presumably in his 70s in reference in mean girls.
Yeah.
It's an interesting.
Interesting choice.
Listen, my, my stepdad bought every DVD that came out.
Oh, old guys have seen everything.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He literally every Tuesday broke as fuck to always, always, they, they
We're always broke.
Living hand of mouth.
But every fucking day that the DVDs came out,
he had every DVD and none of them, like, he would buy the bad ones.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He just didn't even fucking matter.
He wanted all of them.
Yeah, I get that.
Yeah.
You'd go look at, like, this happened a lot at the cable company, too, man.
You'd go look at those DVD collections.
You were like, what the fuck is going on here?
I always say Elektra.
Every person had Elektra when I was the cable guy.
It was just something I noticed.
It must have come out around the top, you know, while I was working.
Was that one of the lesser known Marvel IPs?
It was, okay, so Daredevil with Ben Affleck came out.
Elektra was the female there.
Spent off of that.
Okay.
Yeah.
With Jennifer Garner?
Yes.
Okay.
And every house I went to owned it.
Every single one.
Yeah, there was a time.
Like, when DVDs were big, it was like there was the guys that would just get all the DVDs.
Like they would, you know, they would get.
there was those, also, wasn't there those, those clubs or whatever, those like scam things that you would sign up for?
DVDs for, if you buy one, like Columbia House.
Columbia House and stuff where you would, I remember you'd have the big list and you'd tick off which ones you wanted.
So maybe it was a case of that as well, right?
And then if you're my neighbor, Nick, if they send it to you, you can, once they send it to you and they send you your first bill, you'd just write disaffirm and send it back and they can't come after your money anymore.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, dude, there are so many guys
They had hacks to beat the
Well, this one didn't work, I don't think.
Disaffirmed.
This one was not effective, I don't think.
This kid was 14, by the way.
He was like, I'm 14, I just disaffirm it.
I'm a minor.
They can't make me pay.
I mean, that's maybe true
that maybe they can only come after your parents or whatever.
But it had nothing to do with writing disaffirm.
No.
That was something that someone told them one.
That's a word he heard from who even knows who he heard it.
His dad was definitely not a guy that would say that.
Yeah.
This guy goes,
here's one.
So I guess if you win 10 to nothing,
it's a pickle.
That's where they call it the pickle.
Okay.
So if you shut the other team out.
Yeah.
This guy goes,
did I do something unsportsman like?
I was playing an open play with opponents I've played with many times.
We're all normally very close and a 3.5 skill level and have fun games with mild good nature and shit talking.
I don't know if my opponents were just having a bad day or if my partner and I were having an especially good day, but we're on the verge of a pickle.
The score was 10 to nothing. It was my serve.
I don't know what made me do this. I've never heard it before.
But as I was about the serve, I announced the score 10 pickle one.
It got a mixed response. Funny or bad sportsmanship?
I don't think funny.
It's funny, but also like bad sportsmanship.
I don't know if it's bad sportsmanship, but I will come on.
I will say it's definitely not funny.
That's one thing I will.
That's my opinion on it, is that I don't, maybe I don't get it, but I don't part of the world.
I'm not part of it and I don't understand it, I guess.
But yeah, it's, it's, it is a little bit, even if they're not competitive, it's like,
you don't want to rub salt in someone's wound when they're getting killed that badly.
Deanne says, yeah, you should not.
that when I'm on the verge of a pickle I say the score very very softly so other people
can't hear it why even say it then because I think you have to say it well but it's the name of
the sport though too so they know presumably the risk going in of getting pickled because that's what
that's what everybody's shooting for is a pickling yeah yeah but you say it kind of under your breath
you say like 10 nothing is a pickle 10 this guy goes totally agree with your comment I've been
on the short end of a pickle before it did not appreciate I would have walked in the traffic
before I said that combination of order
And I did not appreciate a loud 10-0-1.
Sometimes I'll just say a score like 10.
They know the second number is no need to publicly embarrass.
I mean, it's pickleball, man.
Are you that embarrassed?
Are you embarrassed?
Yeah, it's not.
It really isn't.
I mean, I guess it is like to rub it in.
But it's like, yeah, you can say the score.
It's part of it.
Yeah.
And if it's, if you're supposed to say the score,
they know that they're losing.
It's I don't see it's not necessarily even rubbing it in. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I truly don't like to pickle anyone. I want them to enjoy the game too. I'm not going to intentionally give away points, but it's okay if it's 11 to. So this guy just gives him a point. So he'll lose one on purpose or whatever. I don't like that. Do a classic like hoops and just miss it, you know. The college football pull out all your starters when it's 50 to three. It shows a lack of respect for your opponent. Absolutely. Yeah. You, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you,
run that shit up to 110-0
and show full respect
to your opponent. Yeah. I mean, I'm
all for dribbling out clocks and whatnot,
but I mean, if you got to shoot, you got
to shoot. Pulling your starters.
Sometimes it's not cool to dribble the clock go to
depending on what the over-under is.
It depends if you're Malik Beasley or not.
This guy goes, sorry, friends or not,
I'm not a fan of trash talking on the courts, just
positive vibes.
Then Lane says, next time drop it
nasty Nelson and see them explode.
Oh, shit.
Dude, I'm starting to think there's some not so nice people attracted to this game.
I think it really, you're right when you say like real estate guys and stuff like that.
I think it's like a level of white collar.
Guys that love to like hyper competitive in their career life.
Yeah.
They bring like that inordinate level of competitiveness to like what is essentially a yard game.
Yeah.
Yeah, totally. Totally. Yeah, those cutthroat guys who are just like, yeah, like in their, in their everyday life, they're like, they're fucking hanging guys out to dry and like they're being ruthless and shit like that. And then they're coming onto the court, this fun, silly little hard plastic ball game. And they're just like, yeah. Well, if I see somebody that looks like they're fucking down because I'm about to pickle them, I'll hit him with a nasty Nelson to really fucking shove it down their throat. Yeah, it's like, guys, I'm sorry, but this is a proxy for.
for warfare.
Yeah.
And then I'll spit on them when I leave.
Yeah.
Spit right in her face for being a loser.
This guy goes, trash talk should be part of it.
Close friends or not.
Without foul language or evil intention.
Guy being evil.
Evil intention.
Yeah.
I'm going to fucking actually murder you with a gun that's in my car.
Yeah.
By the way, I know where your family like is at right now and I'll get them.
Like that kind of stuff is maybe a bit.
far.
Sports are to build character than to face the real world.
Oh, no, hang on.
These are 75 years.
The character's been built.
This is not,
that's for when you're talking about youth sports and stuff.
Maybe I agree.
Yeah,
like eight years.
These are 80-year-old men.
You got to build the character.
Your character is not built.
By this point,
it's not built.
You got no character.
I'm still learning every day.
I mean,
you always want to be going.
right you always want to be evolving but yeah no i i think it is a little bit silly to talk about this
elderly person's game as a character building the whole etiquette bs from tennis is pretentious and
sad in american football i get it because it's too much contact but in most other sports it's actually
a healthy thing to do if someone's clearly uncomfortable or older you can restrain from it but among
close friends and as soft as what you did you're fine oh no i agree if they just said 10 10 nothing
Pickle 1 or whatever.
Like, that's just saying the score,
that's not really heavy-duty
trash talk. That's not like super mean.
That's like 40 love in tennis or something.
Yeah, exactly. It's like, it symbolizes
you're getting right to get your ass, but it's just
what it is. Yeah.
So, here's the review of the dink
by our friend Sean Clements.
Our friend, Sean Clements. I liked it.
Past guest of the show, I liked it. I had a lot of good laughs in it.
You haven't seen it, Tom, the dink.
Yeah, it's funny
Sean, we liked it.
Now this guy
He didn't like it.
Maybe not.
The dink is the worst movie I've seen all year.
I don't know what other movies that person saw.
Like, come on.
There's a bad movie.
There was a lot of stinkers that came out.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
It was, there's no way you could say,
you could say, oh, it wasn't my favorite movie of the year,
but you can't.
I mean, it's got laughs, big laughs in it for sure.
And it's,
well, later on in the thread, the O.P.
is like, I did laugh at that. Oh, yeah, I did think that was good. Oh, I laugh. But the first
line of this will tell you everything you need to know about this guy. Had high hopes for a pickleball
movie, but this was a cringe fest with 10 minutes of pickleball max. I see. So he wanted a
documentary style film where they're showing just nonstop pickleball games. Yeah. They were kept talking.
There was a lot of scenes that weren't even held on the pickleball court. And they were like,
yeah, it was like, get back to the pickleball. I don't care about any of them.
Watch Caddyshack and I obviously would have hoped for a lot more golf in that movie.
I'm not a big fan of not a big fan of Bill Murray's character.
He was very he wasn't golfing at all throughout the movie really.
He never golfed one time.
He was doing that bang with the chipmunks.
I didn't get it.
What do they have to do with golf?
I guess they have them on a golf course,
but that's not the type of stuff I care about in golf.
There's a bunny at our at the park across the street.
street by the way a new bunny just what did you kill it no that's what they say to do here okay this is
just one bunny and it's just kind of like living it's like a little park it's kind of a cute little park
with some trees and stuff you know and it's kind of made it its home it's kind of sweet you go out and see it
every now and then i'd like to see a bunny every now they don't come around here no it's nice i like
what comes around here is the nastiest fattest rats and whatever those things are they eat all the
food, these freaks leave around my apartment building. Maybe, do you have raccoons around there?
Just a bunch of crap. What do you have, Tom? What do you have Tom in? I got bunnies and a headless
bird in my backyard. It's kind of unsettling. Headless bird dead. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Missing much of its head. Oh, but it's still still alive. I brought this up on the show.
A lot of smart guys. Oh, it's just molting losing its feathers. It's been molten for two months and
it's still missing most of its head. Yeah. I mean, people will give you the worst information.
in the world after you do a show.
What kind of, what kind of,
do you have wildlife where you are, though, Tom?
Do you have, like, deer and stuff?
Not so much in my neighborhood, but we have it out in the,
you get out of the city.
Yeah, we live, Chris, we don't live in Canada.
There's no animals here.
Well, there's plenty.
There's plenty.
Do you see grizzly bears close by you?
Well, actually, there's a grizzly bear in Lions Bay,
which is about an hour away from Vancouver.
It's the closest that one's gotten in a long time.
They're usually more up north.
There's just black bears around where.
Is that unsettling, though, that they're this far in?
I kind of like it.
Their range is increasing because we've taken so much of it away from them.
And I think I maybe mention it on even maybe an episode with you, Tom,
but that their Vancouver Island had its first grizzly bears where there was like
starting a grizzly bear, a family, and they were going back onto Vancouver Island.
So they're like, yeah, they're increasing their population and their range.
But yeah, the closest, like there was.
down where by my old place it was a black bear that just somehow like along the river or something
got there like really in the city kind of you know and it just like all where i walked my dog every
day there was these photos of this fucking black bear that was just wandering around which is the coolest
thing to me yeah like i absolutely love that yeah because uh every time the main character hit the ball
there was a camera cut to make it look like a possible shot and even with the movie magic the final game
was completely unbelievable i would have liked to see him play the
the whole game. There's a lot of joyless faithful in the war. He played he played against Andy Rodick
in the final game. That was the one they're talking about. But it didn't look real at all.
It didn't look at all. It didn't look. I mean, I don't think he even really played the game.
I don't think Jake Johnson played the game. No, no, I didn't see any elderly people arguing with
each other about stupid little things. I didn't see any nasty Nelson. This guy goes,
this guy first
this guy goes I wholeheartedly
no this a guy says something like
but it brought a lot of people to the sport
one of the comments brought a lot of people
to the sport and this guy goes that's the last thing
my local court needs a ton of more beginners
extending already very long wait times
and this guy goes I wholeheartedly
agree comedy movies and most new movies
for that matter are formulaic and stereotypical
though perhaps our biased love for the game
gave us false hope
it's come on man
yeah i've noticed movies are really good lately by the way i have i've seen a lot of good movies
seen a lot of good movies i saw i saw brian and i saw end of oak street the dinosaur movie
fantastic movie tom it's really really good i saw the poster last night i went and watched
teenage love or death and stagia oh i wouldn't mind seeing it yeah oh i was going to go watch that
of the rio this playing at the rio theater i think it's out at cineplex now that's with
Hannah Eindbender, right?
Can you get her on a show?
Well, I think maybe she's pretty
big now, but she's friends with Gavin
who Gavin's my friend who's been on the show
a few times. So there's a possibility.
I don't know that I would really reach out.
But yeah, she's, I saw Tony
the Anthony Bourdain movie
and then I saw the rivals
of Amzai King
about a bee, about Matthew McConae
has this beekeeper, honey.
Fake. What?
That's fake. He couldn't be a beekeeper.
No, he plays it really well. It's a good movie, too.
Is there a lot of beekeeping in it?
Yes.
Like, mostly beekeeping?
Like, if you're a fan of beekeeping, I'm not even joking, you might actually enjoy the movie
because there is a lot of it. And they talk about bees in like a serious way.
I had an uncle that cat bees. I'll be the judge of that, Chris. I'm,
I'll watch to make sure it's like realistic.
And it's set in the South as well. I don't know exactly. I even think maybe it's set in Kentucky, but I could be wrong.
I saw guys killing a beehive the other day.
And I was like kind of annoyed by it because they were like pest control guys.
And I was kind of like, aren't you supposed to try to, you know, relocate?
Save them.
Relocate.
Yeah, bees are like.
They're up in a fucking.
This guy's up on the, this is a huge Victorian house, right?
That's in my neighborhood.
And it's up in the very top, like of the triangle.
The bee is up at the very top.
They got a ladder, probably 18 foot lap.
Like the smallest ladder you've ever seen.
And this guy's in a beekeeping suit with a really long pole and like scraping it off with this really long pole.
And I'm like, I wouldn't be like, what are you guys doing, man?
It's a clip to do the job that they.
It seemed weird.
This guy goes, let's just hit a couple more of these, this person in a pickleball forum who is not pickleball for seniors.
I hit two women with the ball on the court this week.
and it really ticked them off.
I've been hit by the ball in the head, face, neck, upper body, and legs.
I've gone home with tattoos and bruised and swollen fingers.
I don't get angry about it.
I wouldn't get out of court if I couldn't take it.
Neither should they.
Makes me feel like I have to play like I do with my seven-year-old daughter.
Now, you would have to get fucking mollywap to get a bruise from a wiff from a pickleball.
I saw some pretty bad injuries, but a lot of them were from fights.
A lot of them were shiners.
Oh, yeah, and just like, lots of scrapes and stuff.
I could see that right where you fall.
And like, you know, it's easy to hurt yourself on the concrete or whatever.
Yeah.
Yeah, I saw like a lot of scrapes and stuff like that.
But like, less like, yeah, I think most of the injuries really are like guys jawing and not jawing at each other maybe, but like kind of giving each other shit, you know?
And then they goes too far, obviously.
It always goes too far with these guys.
And finally, this guy goes, I had a really disappointing experience trying to learn pickleball today.
By the way, oh, this is from R slash rant.
Oh, okay.
I was going to say, this is a top 1% commenter and he just tried learning, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
No, he's a 1% commenter on rant on slash rant.
So he's one of the top.
This guy's one of the top ranchers in the country.
This guy's the LeBron James of France.
Yeah.
He's somewhere between Miller and Leary.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So a couple weeks ago I was gifted a Bickle ball Bickle ball.
Bickle ball.
I do I was going to do that.
Bickle ball everybody.
I was on anesthesia an hour and a half ago.
Holy shit everybody.
We got in just before the end here.
Just snuck that in Bickle ball.
A little flub right under the gun.
Bickle ball.
I just had to almost made it.
I was shot up with Propofal not three hours ago.
Yeah.
I don't I don't mind saying it now because it's the end of the episode.
so it's not going to, it's not going to like taint your initially,
but I'm super sick and feeling very under the weather.
And Brian was just shot up with a bunch of drugs.
I was going to say, I thought you guys were mad at me for a little bit.
No.
That turns out here.
No, we're just under the weather.
No.
And I mean this.
I could never be mad at you, Tom.
You are one of my favorite guys in the whole world.
Yeah, I don't get mad.
So a couple of, he goes, uh, Brian's like, I don't like you, but I don't get mad.
I don't like you.
I hate being around you and ever go.
I had, I had the best time having dinner with Tom the other night.
It's a great.
Brian was telling me all about how much funny he had at your show.
I was, I was like jealous, you know, of the fact that he got to go to your live show and
that I will probably never get to go to your live show.
Well, one day when tensions ease between our two nations, maybe we can.
Or maybe, but you can come up here anytime.
That's true.
Yeah.
Anytime. I don't know anyone personally that really wants to play, but I got a friend who I talked into playing and he got hyped for it. We're both in our mid-30s, not in peak shape, but wanting to do more outdoors type thing. Can I tell you at the place I was at this morning? This woman, this woman comes in with her mom because you have to have somebody with you. I had Gwen. This woman comes in with her mom. She goes, she's doing a colonoscopy. She looks right at everybody in the room while she's in line. She's like, y'all get your ass checked?
This is one of the best things I've ever heard.
Everybody in here getting her ass checked.
I set us up in the driveway and we just casually got the ball back and forth,
bat the ball back and forth to each other for a couple hours until we get the feel of it.
We found a nearby brewery that has a couple pickleball courts that are free to play on as long as you have a tab open.
Whatever.
There's a lot of that now too.
That's dangerous when hearing about all.
the aggression, that's dangerous to have like an open alcohol pickleball court.
There's a lot of that in Ohio.
Penny Bear night in the minor leagues.
There's a lot of that in Columbus right now.
There's like a ton of places.
There's a place, I hate the name of it, pickleball and chill, which incidentally,
when I read the reviews of pickleball and chill, they do not have air conditioning.
Oh.
So everybody's very hot in there, actually.
Hot and bothered and fucking.
There were quite a few more people there than I'd expected, but we got in line to play 30 minutes later.
We watched other teams play and listened to what they were saying to each other.
I think we're ready.
We got called to play and go out to the court against two guys who were probably just above the drinking age to get in.
We watched them play when we first got there, and they're really good, like the best team that we saw there.
We did some handshakes and small talk, and I casually said, yep, this is actually our first game we've ever played.
I'm excited.
They both smirked at each other and giggled and was like, let's show you how to play pickleball.
This is from a movie.
Got a couple of rooks over here.
Yeah.
They absolutely destroyed us, mocked us for our placement or hits.
I missed a lot of hits and my friend made contact with a lot of them and they were just bad hits out of bounds or within our own half.
They made jokes out of us.
And some of the other bar patrons who watched just cheered them on.
Stubarbly
I love it
Because these are like
Just like 20
21 year old kids are saying
You know
Yeah playing 30 year olds
Playing 30 something year olds
And they made
What did you say
They made jokes of us
They made jokes of us
And some of the other bar patrons
Just watched and cheered them on
Yeah because they probably know them
They're like, you know what I mean
They're probably well-known players around the courts
Hey let's show these people
How to play pickleball
So awesome.
Well,
Tom is on the trill bellies.
Thanks,
guys.
Thanks for having me.
Thank you for doing the show.
Tom,
we love having you.
And Chris,
go get some rest,
buddy.
I'm going to take a big long walk.
I'm going to take,
I'm going to get some rest today.
I woke up at 3 o'clock this morning,
couldn't get back to sleep,
just in the worst way,
sweating and headache and sore throat.
I'll allow you to rest.
No work for the rest of the day.
Take the rest of the day.
off. I appreciate that. I don't have any more work to do. What do you mean? I don't have any more work to do, though.
You're supposed to be working. We don't like to do it that way, Chris, but it's the worst.
Tom, I wish you were my boss.
Bye, guys. Bye. See you guys.
