Welcome to guys, the podcast about guys. I'm Brian, the cool guy.
Starting point is 00:00:55 And I have with me, that's what they call me now. I'm hearing that they're calling me that all the time. Who's calling you that? Just people. Okay. Guys stopped me on the street and say, brother, you are cool. Yeah. Your hoodies are nice.
Starting point is 00:01:11 And then I have with me Mr. Rolex, Chris James. That's an insult. Oh, really? Because that's like that would mean like that's kind of outdated. Like that's what an outdated watch guy would have. This makes you look like a fucking, you know, you're showing off. And the other ones are bad. There's better ones than Rolex.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Rolex has a whole thing going on. It just, you're a Rolex guy. You'd love it. Well, I think. I mean, if you say on this call, the person that might buy a Rolex is me. I think you would be. Yeah, I don't want to. I don't want.
Starting point is 00:01:43 I think you would be the one that would buy a Rolex. I personally I would never buy a watch I could never see myself being a watch guy I don't like that's not a piece of if I was going to do jewelry or anything like that or like accessories it wouldn't be a watch I don't think ever well let's get our guest on the show we have Amelia Marino here today hi Amelia what's up what's up everyone thank you so much for having me you got a fan of what you do I don't have a Rolex but out of the two of you I think I think I think Ryan, you would be the one to buy a Rolex. You just told me before we started recording. No, I didn't tell you. You get $500 hoodies. Well, I told you that.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Because they're cool. I told you. I did say because they're cool. I said he gets five hundred. I said you have a $500 hoodie. And then you clarified to Amelia. He said, well, I got two now. Wait, can I just ask, what's the design on them?
Starting point is 00:02:43 What makes me so cool? Oh my God, you don't even want to ask you. Have you ever heard of a little guy named Samuel Zellig? Yeah. No, actually. Of course you have it. And it also, it just, it's like a, it's a streetwear hoodie. It has like a bunch of.
Starting point is 00:02:59 You call it streetwear. It's actually a fashion hoodie. It has like a, it's like hype beast type fashion. Yes, yes. It definitely is. But the design you can imagine it has a bunch of like logos scattered across. No logos. No logos.
Starting point is 00:03:14 a fucking logo at all. I'm getting it up here on the screen. What do you call them? They're, uh, it's embroidery. It's fancy embroidered. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:03:23 they are embroidered. I will say that. Yeah. Do they have rhinestones on? Is it kind of like an Ed. I would never. I would never. I am not a hell star guy.
Starting point is 00:03:33 I'm not one of those guys. I'd never wear that. I like my clothes to look clean. Yeah. That's one of my top things. Those guys that wear those purple jeans and stuff, forget that. That is not me.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I buy. Okay. Very long shorts. And you go buy long shorts, but some of them I feel like you do wear like purple stuff. No, the brand purple. Oh, there's a brand. Oh, you don't know, I'm sorry, Brian. I don't.
Starting point is 00:03:57 I buy clothes from a normal store. I wear Adidas stuff. I wear some Lulu lemon stuff. What's purple now? That's a brand of jeans. You've seen them a million times. They're very tight and then they sag them. and then they have the price tag
Starting point is 00:04:16 which says purple hanging out of the back Gotcha And they look dirty And like distressed It's the Rolex of pants Yeah I would say The Rolex is it is funny We're going to talk a lot about Rolex
Starting point is 00:04:33 Because they're the funniest guys In the watch community In that like they They are The picture of there's always a picture of of them with their watch on the steering wheel of their car. So it's like, oh, the BMW, you know what I mean? So they're showing what kind of car they have as well, that they're like, hey, I'm, I'm,
Starting point is 00:04:55 I'm a rich guy, basically. I can say, I have a lot of money. Yeah. And then the funniest thing I saw and it's the visual thing. So I didn't have it. I don't have it for the show, but I can show you because I posted it, is, is a guy that took his picture of his role. which hey listen impressive
Starting point is 00:05:16 you paid for a roll. How much does a Rolex like there's obviously like 30,000 10,000 to 30,000 Okay so like I'm trying to Is there a range? There's different types of Rolexes right? So there would be like but there it's going to cost you like 10 grand basically
Starting point is 00:05:31 So this guy took a picture of his Rolex he's driving a Hyundai It's nothing wrong with the Hyundai but it is No there's not saying there is I drive a fucking civic It does seem weird yeah It does seem weird yeah and we have a key but there's nothing wrong with that. But yeah, I wouldn't take a photo of me with my Rolex on the wheel of the Kia.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Yeah, I would not do that because it looks ridiculous. You know what I think it looks like? So I used to hang out with this guy Nick when I was growing up. And he went through this phase where he wore these black gloves that with the fingers cut off. Oh, big J. Okersen.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Like driving gloves. No, no, no, no, no. They're like leather, though. They were like leather. Oh. So the holes cut out. I think Big J. Okerson sometimes, I don't want to, but I think Big J. Okerson, he has some. When he goes to a fancy dinner, I think he wears leather fingerless glove.
Starting point is 00:06:26 But yeah, so he had, and he only wore one. Oh. Is that technically a driving glove? Yeah, that's what I'm curious about, too. It might be a driving glove, but it looks like rock, rock and roll. You know what I mean? And it's leather. And this mother.
Starting point is 00:06:43 fucker would walk and like wave the arm with the glove on it so much and the other arm not at all we would goof on him all the time about it because it's like he's walking one arm to the side the other one just going like so people see his glove so people can see his glove at that point just wear two gloves yeah way too good yeah why don't you wearing one glove is an is like an odd look I feel like you went one glove mode I mean it is an odd look but there was a where that was kind of cool. Yeah, there's a time when everything was kind of cool. Or like, you know, wearing your, we all remember the crisscross era,
Starting point is 00:07:21 Amelia's probably you're probably too young to remember the crisscross era where people wore their pants backwards. There was a, it was like a hip-hop group of young children. They were 12 or 13 years old and they, they wore their pants backwards. And like, you'd go to school and people would have their jeans on backwards. That's fun. Yeah, it is fun. That's fun.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Let's bring that back. Well, you also wore baseball jerseys backwards. That was the other part of it. Yeah, that was the other part of me. People don't talk about as much. Very difficult. You buy a baseball jersey that buttons up in the front and you wear it backwards so the buttons are at the back. Which is the name of the team.
Starting point is 00:07:57 But it's crazy to do because you need some like similar to if you have like somebody helping with a dresser. Like you would need help to put that on because you can't button up the back of it. Yeah. I would say the reason I brought up Nick in his glove is because this guy probably drives with his arm hanging out of the window of his Hyundai. When people drive by, they're like, whoa, Rolex. You'd have to be pretty close to recognize it to Rolex. Rolex guys notice, dude. Watch guys notice.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Like they can tell from, yeah. Do they notice if it's a knockoff? And how much do Rolex knockoffs go for? I actually can answer that question from you because I looked that up on Quora about this. And I don't know how much they go for, but I will say this. This guy, he asked, what? what would you rather buy a real or fake Rolex? Well, I think it's probably a real one, right?
Starting point is 00:08:49 I don't know if like, I guess depends on your financial situation. I'd rather get a fake one. You would rather have a fake one. Be honest, I mean, kind of cool. Like if you have the option of either of them, if it was like, you know, you had it. If money was no object. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I guess I'd have to go for the real deal. But you're right, though, it's like, I guess it depends on the, it depends on. Nobody knows if it's fair. That's what I'm saying. fake. Unless you hang out with like the kind of people who would know, which I definitely don't. I don't think there's a single person in my life that could tell if I had a fake Rolex. Your dad didn't do watches. My dad wore a watch, um, but it was, you know, it was a, we were like middle class, like he wasn't
Starting point is 00:09:29 wearing like high end watches or anything, but he definitely wore a wrist watch. He was just from that era. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he, well, my dad was not time. He was wearing like a gold or a silver watch or whatever but yeah I don't remember it would have been like maybe you know a couple hundred dollar watch or something like that yeah I don't remember his watch but it wasn't fancy but he wore one because he didn't have a cell phone and he used it to tell what time it was when he was out like that's why he wore one for like practical reasons not for style reasons I when I was young like I wore a swatch watch I you guys might not know about swatch they were very cool I've heard of them before but what what are they they're really cheap they're oh I know these
Starting point is 00:10:09 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They're like plastic. It's basically just plastic, but they look like they have cool designs. They were very in style. We wore a Coca-Cola swatch watch for a few, for one year. Wow. Yeah, thank you. So you could do branded ones and stuff.
Starting point is 00:10:23 That was their whole thing. They were kind of like collector type. Gotcha. The fake watch gets way. This guy goes, I have a fake Hugh Block, Big Bang, and Rose Gold. I also have a real Rolex. The fake watch gets way more attention and compliments. The fake is a bang on at a glance.
Starting point is 00:10:42 It's heavy, has a Swiss made ETA chrono movement. Not a great one, but the kind you'd expect in a $500 watch. So, uh, $500. $500 for a knock. Okay. That's still a lot to pay. That's one of a lot of money's worth of match. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Yeah, like buddy, do you just go get a hoodie if you got a fucking. Go get a fucking Samuel Zellick. I mean, I don't know what half of what you said is. Me neither. Growing up, I actually did wear a wristwatch at all time so much so that my my wrist got like, it like tapered in the middle and then came back out because I was just wearing a wristwatch at all times. But I was into like Cassio, those cheap.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Oh, those are cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I used to like those. But I couldn't tell you anything about what you said about the, what was it? The Swiss. Chrono movement. Chrono movement. What is that?
Starting point is 00:11:41 I guess it's something to do with maybe the like... I'll say this. All these watches have a bunch of features that nobody understands. You know what I mean? Do they have to do with the functionality of the watch or whatever? Sure, I guess. Yeah, like... Well, he goes, uh, the screen is a sapphire crystal.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Not as good as the real one, but for fake, it's outstanding. The strap is identical to the real one. I suspect the case may have come out of the same factory. Oh, that's what guys are. that by blue legs tell themselves. They're like, it's a fake one, but it's like it feels like it was made at the same factory. Parts of it were at least. They do an extra shift at the designer clothes factory and make more of them to sell its knockoffs.
Starting point is 00:12:20 My friend has a knockoff Rolex and it's Domino's themed. It's got a little Domino's logo. He just got it. And even even this knockoff is, it was like $500. He got it as a gift, but like, it's a gift. but like even the knockoffs are are like hoodie priced. Yeah, I guess it makes sense if it's like 10,000, 15,000 that like a good knockoff is still going to, it's not going to cost like 15 bucks or whatever, you know, because I get,
Starting point is 00:12:49 I bet you could get like a really cheap knockoff one, but it's not going to, it's not going to fool anybody really. These days are really quite good. When I wear mine, not often, and I see a watch shop carrying Hugh Blot, I stop in to look, invariably the people in the shop think mine is. real holding them both in the hand you can tell the difference but only with a little effort i still like the rolex more by the real one so this guy does have a real Rolex i don't trust him actually let's be honest i don't trust that this guy does have a real roll he's bragging about his fake watch and he's like
Starting point is 00:13:23 and also i have a roll one yeah maybe he got like i mean maybe he bought one and then he but he can't afford to have a number of them you know i mean that could be a thing it could be a thing i don't So, man. I really truly believe this guy has a fake Rolex that he's like, he's like, no, it's real. Why would I, why would I buy a fake Rolex? It's like, why would you buy a fake Hooblot or whatever? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then this guy goes, I had a real Hugh Blot limited series watch of the year 2005, number
Starting point is 00:13:55 123 out of 250 with a golden titanium. It was stolen from my apartment, never really recovered from the theft. So now I just have a Bond Limited Series Omega, robust. for kite surfing, diving, and shower. What do you mean you never recover? Like, emotionally he never recovered from the back? That's what I was wondering as well. Or like financially.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Like, what does that mean? That I don't know. Then the guy that posts the original thing comes back. The Omega is a better watch in every respect despite not looking as cool. I personally hate when things get stolen. It sets off every one of my worst instincts. Yeah, my interpretation of that is he, he's like, oh, I'm never going to have nice things. because I'm too afraid of getting a burglarized.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Yes, that makes sense. I never recovered in that sense of like being able to buy something expensive again. Yeah. I like that guy. That guy is kind of a unique. The guy who came back to talk to him, he kind of has that unique perspective of not liking when things get stolen from him. Well, the line after it is the one that really gets me.
Starting point is 00:14:58 It says it sets off every one of my worst instincts. And I'm like, what did this guy do? Yeah, worst instinct. I guess it's like he thinks he wants to hurt people. people, right? Sure. Probably, right? He wants like go out, go out hunting or something.
Starting point is 00:15:12 He's been stolen from and has done something he regrets, I think. Yeah. It does suck to get, I've never had my house robbed or something like that, but I would imagine it would really suck and it would like mess. It would mess with me for sure. If somebody like came into my home and stole stuff from me, it would definitely like changed my perspective in a lot of ways. This guy does reply. I wouldn't want to hurt.
Starting point is 00:15:36 I don't think I would want to hurt people. Yeah, would it bring out the worst instincts in you? No. No, I'm not for me. I would kill somebody. I don't put up with that. Brian lives in a stand your ground state though. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:49 You can kill whoever you want here. Do you own a gun? Yep. Nope. He wants to. He literally wants to. You'd think it would be a joke. Like, from his politics and stuff, you'd be like, oh, this guy, he was no way you'd want to have a gun.
Starting point is 00:16:02 But he does. He talks about it quite regularly. And thankfully, His wonderful wife, Katie, has said no to that because Brian with a gun. I don't know, man. I feel safe around Brian with a gun, I think. Thank you. Yeah, because the only thing.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Yeah. I don't know. I don't know that you've spent enough time around Brian. I feel. Like, I'm not saying. I feel like he can be maybe a little bit reckless sometimes. Not that he would do something bad with it, that he would mistakenly. And I'd play with it.
Starting point is 00:16:36 That's why he would play with it. Let me have it. Yeah, because, like, he had a pocket knife that he, like, had an incident with as well when he was playing. What, there it is. That's his corn pocket knife. So my corn switch blade. Oh, nice. What was this incident that occurred?
Starting point is 00:16:50 I just found, I just remembered it. I stabbed myself in a leg on accident. Then I tried to put those shorts on the other day. And I was like, oh, shit, there's a hole in these things. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I stabbed myself in. So that's what I'm talking about is that.
Starting point is 00:17:03 I think that if he, he likes to fit. fiddle around with things and play with things and stuff. And he's like, he does a little bit. Scratch my head with the gun. Like, oh, interesting. He would do something like that. But I feel like you would, you would, it would be a situation where you would fiddle around with something.
Starting point is 00:17:24 And then the gun would go off and accidentally shoot a bad guy, though. Like, it would actually be a good thing. It would accidentally shoot somebody who's like doing severe financial. crimes that are destroying society and you would actually be labeled as a hero and i hang out with those guys all the time i love them i mean i've said i'm afraid of guns because my friend did shoot a gun off by accident in the closet of my friend's house i've seen it happened so many times where he literally was saying like he just said oh don't worry the safety's and then he shot it and just shot the gun and like we were all just right there in the room and it was like it really sort of turned me off
Starting point is 00:18:04 from being around guns one day the guy i know whose dad had all the playboys oh yeah who is that jeremy jeremy this is not porno shan no this is jeremy there he had a lot of friends who had a lot of pornoes that's true yes well no jeremy didn't have any porno to his name his dad kept porno on the fireplace so that you could just leave through it when you went over there yeah and it was playboy wasn't even porno it was playboy yeah which is nothing compared to what like porno shan had in his fucking repertoire but jeremy loved breaking into houses
Starting point is 00:18:40 and stealing stuff he's doing it all the time like he stole my stuff he broke in my house stole my Nintendo yeah that would bring out my worst instincts of that happened he broke into a guy's house because he knew he had a gun and he got the gun and we were like playing with it we're like
Starting point is 00:18:56 let's go to fucking trails we used to hang out in the wood they were called the trails let's go trails and like shoot some fish or something because there are no animals. Fish? Yeah. Let's go shoot some thing. By the way, that's a very difficult thing to do.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Well, about if they're in a barrel. That's true. It's easy as hell. That's true. Good point. Is this watch too small for my wrist, this guy asks? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:20 100%. Okay. Well, you two are wrong. He's a Tesla. Yeah. The car's too big for his dick. He goes, I really liked this Santos Dumont, and I was looking to buy a used one for a while.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Today I got lucky and got one with a great deal. First, I was super happy. And honestly, I still am, but a lot of people called out the watch being too small. Oh, that sucks. That's what my friends would do. Like, showing it off to your friends in a proud way. Like, look at this watch I got. And then being like, oh, that's way too small.
Starting point is 00:19:54 That would be devastating. I feel like in the wristwatch community, that's like the most insulting thing to happen to you. Your watches. Hey, why's your, hey, do they make that an amends? Well, he doesn't end it by saying, what do you guys think? I have rather small wrists and I think it's fine. He does have small wrists. I'll say that. He did have a small wrist as well, but it did look weird on him. Like, I understand what the people are saying. It's not. And by the way, you guys don't know this, but like that watch is in the perfect spot. I think there's another thing. There's a Reddit. You'll love it. And listeners, go check it out. It's called R slash hand watch. And it's people wearing their watches too low. On their wrist and it's digging into their hand. I got you. Too close to the hand.
Starting point is 00:20:38 There was a fantastic one I saw yesterday. If I can, it's an Oakley one and it looked so uncomfortable that I was like, I loved it. It's like my favorite thing. Media pictures. I've got to get this one up here for you guys because I think you like it a lot. This is a watch I would buy. Do you don't have a watch though, Brian, right? You don't.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Apple watch. You have an Apple watch. Yeah, yeah, okay. Oh, Jesus Christ. That looks so uncomfortable. That's the eye of Sauron. If you guys could see it, make this the cover for the episode. This is the fact that you said you would buy this,
Starting point is 00:21:15 this might be the ugliest watch I've ever seen in my life. Chris, I think that's why I would buy it. Yeah, you do like that kind of, yeah. Yeah, that's very you, Brian. I think you should get it. It's so ugly and it looks like it hurts to wear. It looks like it's digging into a skin. in such a terrible way.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Like it doesn't just look uncomfortable. It looks like it's doing like damage to his hand. His wrist isn't even bent and it's, you could see the fold of skin on his hand. It's digging into it so hard. Yeah, you can see the folds on both sides of this one. You guys, you have to, yeah, it does look like an eye. The Oakley Torpedo watch.
Starting point is 00:21:54 If you can't look at the picture on the episode, it's called the Oakley Torpedo watch. You can, you'll find it's 25 years old. It's fantastic. It is this exact type of thing I would buy. They could have easily designed it to be horizontal so that it goes with your wrist so that you can move around. Yeah, it's going, it looks like it's going the wrong way. It looks like it would like it would make the movement on your hand.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Like it would make it so you couldn't move your hand properly. That's why handwatches of Reddit. A subreddit called R slash handwatch because people wear their watches wrong all the time. So that guy, so that person should be wearing it higher up the wrist. Way higher up. Yeah, yeah. That makes sense. So it shouldn't be on the hand where it's like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Back when I wore watches, I used to wear it a crisscross style. I would wear it backwards so that the face is on the inside of my wrist. I did that for a period too. Yeah. Yeah, because you could just do, because you could do, let's stealthily check the time. You could just do this. Look at it this way instead of doing, because I used to feel like I was being rude if I were to look at the time like this because it's like moving your hand in this way
Starting point is 00:22:57 is very like, I need to know what time it is. And like how long have you been talking to me before here? When can I leave? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But if you're like wearing your hat backwards, it's cool. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Chris Cross. I was very much a guy that put like, like when I had a beeper.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Like guys would hang them out of their pocket so it hung out. I would put it on the inside and just have the clip coming out. Now, I wanted everybody to see my beeper, of course. But I didn't want everybody to know. that I wanted everybody to see my beeper. You wanted to be, you wanted to be sort of different. You were kind of counterculture kind of guy.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Well, me and the boys didn't and where our beepers hanging out, for sure. What about Aaron? He didn't either. Okay. So you guys, that's where you guys got it from. Listen, I'm going to tell you truth.
Starting point is 00:23:47 He's the first guy to get one. Of course he was. He was 12. He was 12. A beeper at 12? What do you need at 12? Well, see, Amelia. I was always beeper.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Amelia, this is not your regular 12-year-old that you're thinking. him this is a guy Don Aaron who's like he's like running shit around town he's like people are looking at even adults are kind of like asking him for guidance on things he's kind of like the born leader type situation. Whoa. Yeah. And what's he up to now? Well.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Oh. I'm so sorry. RIP to Don Aaron. RIP to Don Aaron. RAP Aaron. RAPE Aaron. RAPE Aaron. RAPE Aaron.
Starting point is 00:24:23 I'm Don Brian. Brian. We go by Don Brian. Uh, who are these people you mentioned? That's ridiculous behavior. and sorry to say this, but it only proves they have no taste or class. A lot of guys, a lot of talk about people's class. Yeah, I would imagine.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Yeah. No class for saying this. No taste for thinking this. This is the perfect size for you. The proportions are spot on. Look at the picks from people 60 years ago wearing their watches. That's the proportions we have here. And they're perfect.
Starting point is 00:24:51 So he's basically saying like 60 years ago where everybody was all gaunt and, you know, that's what you look like. You look like a guy from a bygone. era. Not everything needs to be big and or flashy. In fact, nothing does. In fact,
Starting point is 00:25:05 most things shouldn't be. In fact, nothing does. I mean, I guess, yeah, it depends. Like,
Starting point is 00:25:11 I feel like a watch, though, it's like it depends on why you're wearing it. But yeah, most of the people are wearing it as an accessory that you want people to notice. That's kind of the idea of it. 26, your watch needs to be nice.
Starting point is 00:25:23 You know what I mean? Yeah. In 26. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Your watch is a status symbol. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Definitely because you have so many ways to tell the time now that it's not like a necessary functional thing. So it's like, yeah, it has to be like a piece of jewelry or like a statement thing. A few days ago, my wife came home from a business trip. She said, I have to tell you about this guy I saw on the plane. His watch was way too big. It looked ridiculous. Good story, sir. Yeah, I mean, listen, I get it.
Starting point is 00:25:54 You know, you're in a relationship a long time. You run out of things to say you're sharing a life together. you have a lot of the same stories. So it is kind of like, I got to tell you of this kind of interesting thing that happened. And she probably knows he's a watch guy. Yeah. So she's like relating that to him, you know?
Starting point is 00:26:09 Him telling the story is the issue. It's not her telling him. I think he's bragging about the fact that like, hey, guess what? I got a good one, you know, somebody who appreciates my love of watches and tries to like share that with me. Yeah. This guy goes,
Starting point is 00:26:23 nah, it's perfect, man. Classic. People who want dinner plates on their wrist usually bought their one and only suit at a mall. Well, I don't know what that. Yeah, what does that mean? They're like fake, classy kind of. They're like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:38 That's like, that's like me when I would, I would like only had like one good outfit when I was younger, you know, and I would like wear it to the bank or whatever. You know, if I was going to do something where I wanted people to think I was doing okay, then I would have one nice outfit. And then everything else was like, yeah, it was just horrible. Well, unfortunately, Major Jaguar said, yeah, it looks lost on there, especially considering that's a viewpoint, which usually makes watches look bigger than they appear to other people. Whilst on Reddit, in the world of watch geekery, more widely, there's a fashion for smaller watches. In real life, most watch brands apparently sell more larger watches and smaller.
Starting point is 00:27:17 So if the average person thinks about your watch at all, it's likely to be, it's likely to be in a it's too small sort of way. That's not nice. That is a nice thing to say to a guy. That is not a nice thing to say to a guy. Well, luckily, Bloodshot 1-1-1 replied and said, well, it's not gay enough for your Tesla, but the size is fine. Oh. That's a really weird. Shots are fired.
Starting point is 00:27:46 He's trying to be. I don't know if he's like trying to be like kind of what, like, he might be a non-Trump guy. I don't know about that, though. he's saying Tesles are gay? Yes. Yeah, I don't know. He might be a no,
Starting point is 00:28:03 he might be a no electric car guy. That is a good possibility. Or maybe he strikes me as being part of like the dirt bag left where like you still can, you still use homophobic slurs, but in a way that's good for the Democratic Party. Yeah. I invented that. I mean, Brian is literally.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Yeah, Brian is this is. You have just described Brian to a team. Yeah. I mean, this is. And we love. for it. Yeah, this is the kind of guy. No, I do feel like, yeah, saying something is gay.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Like, when does that post from? 55 days ago? Yeah, see, it just feels like that is a little bit of an outdated thing to be like, oh, yeah, that's pretty gay. Like, it doesn't feel like you hear that a lot. But I think he's trying to be mean to a Tesla guy is what I'm saying. So maybe he hates. But we don't know why he's mean?
Starting point is 00:28:51 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Gay, I think is coming back. It's like a, it's like a, it's like a per, what was called pendulum, you know, like it became like, it became homophobic and bad. And now it's like coming back and you reclaim it and, you know. And I, I mean, like, I feel like I can, listen, I can speak on it a little bit. Like I can kind of half, I can half speak on it. Not on this show. You can't.
Starting point is 00:29:17 Because I'm bisexual. So I am like, you know, I'm half gay. Stop, stop using that joke. Brian's bisexual and then he gets horny when he buys a $500 already. Yeah, I do listen, it doesn't, it doesn't bother me, but I also understand that like, I wouldn't be necessarily the type of person who would be like, yeah, like made fun of in that same sort of way. But as somebody who's half gay, saying like, oh, man, Teslas are so gay, it doesn't offend
Starting point is 00:29:50 me, that's for sure. Yeah, yeah. the insult to the Tesla driver trumps the the slur and my brother drives a Tesla not that gay is a slur but yeah my my brother drives a Tesla as well but I think he he did it he really bought it right before Elon Musk turned so bad he's like one of those stickers he's a normal guy he's not he would never do that but yeah I got the car before I I knew what did the stickers I bought this before he was bad. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Or the one with the circle and line through Elon where it's like, yeah, or Elmo. Sometimes he'll do Elmo and you're like, yeah, like nobody's calling him that. That's like a small amount of people who think Elmo is an insult to Elon. I've never heard him referred to his Elmo. No, you'll see it. So here's the thing. You'll see it. Don't worry.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Just keep your eyes open when you're on the road. You'll see it. I promise. I will. I'll send you a picture of every person. I see Colin Elmo. The Rolex, this is something we're going to learn about now that is unique to watches and specifically unique to Rolexes.
Starting point is 00:31:01 It's called the Rolex AD experience. Now, AD means authorized dealer. Now, in order to get a Rolex, you can't just walk in a store and buy a Rolex. That seems odd. Yeah. Well, here, I'll read this. This is a full-blown rant because my Rolex AD experience was part- curiosity, part actual interest in buying a watch?
Starting point is 00:31:25 For the past years, I've read countless opinions about the Rolex AD experience, and I judge them with a raised eyebrow. Surely it can't be that bad. I'm sure Rolex would do something when there's so many negative opinions. Well, it turns out my experience was completely deflating as a prospective buyer to the point where I will never buy a Rolex watch for my personal use. Whilst they all use whilst. Yeah, that's the second Wilst I've heard.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Yeah, two Wilsts. Is it Wilst or whilst? I don't know. You're probably right. No, I think it might be an either either. It might be, it might be that either one is, you know, but I definitely, wiltz is the, is how I, but I also am notably stupid and have made a lot of stupid mistakes about that kind of thing on here that I promise you, everybody comments on regular.
Starting point is 00:32:17 I'm dumb as bricks. He thought the honesty was in the Bible. Don't say the. Odyssey thing. Oh, what did you just say? That I thought the Odyssey was in the Bible. Well, guess what, Amelia? Brian, when he was younger, he used to suck on titties for three hours and he didn't
Starting point is 00:32:33 know anything else to do. I want to clear something up. Wait, was he your mom's? No. Like when you were a baby? No, he was a teenager and it's what he would do with his girlfriend and his girlfriend wanted him to do more stuff, but he just sat there suckling like that. People do put too much stock into three hours.
Starting point is 00:32:52 It went on for three hours, but we were also Frenching. Did you take breaks? Was it like uninterrupted mouth on ariola? Because sometimes we'd French. Sometimes they'd go smoke cigarettes. I'm not going to lie. This sounds awesome. Well, she didn't think so.
Starting point is 00:33:15 She wanted him to do different stuff. You know what I mean? She wanted them to like move off of it clearly. and he's just like he's treating it like his damn binky and he's just like he won't stop whilst the AD was kind enough to tell me all of the details the reality of sitting in a Rolex dealer and not being able to buy because of some random wait lists Rolex deciding is better to be greedy and drive up hype and fake demand plus for some models not even a wait list why are they even in the catalog made the experience the worst buying process for any valuable slash price he
Starting point is 00:33:51 good. Everything was subjective. Asking about multiple models only to be told time and again, not possible. Why doesn't add even, why doesn't AD even take requests anymore? Worst of all, the local AD never knows what shipment they get. Just some watches selling two days.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Example paying customers waiting for a Daytona for 10 years is shocking. Really 10 years? So is this guy, what's he angry about exactly that he can't get a watch? He can't just walk in and buy a watch. There's like a waiting list for them.
Starting point is 00:34:23 Also, you have to build a relationship with them. We're gonna see some of that. Like what do you mean? They have to trust you to treat the watch well. I think I know what's happening here. I think the watch community is creating barriers to gate keep watches. So it becomes harder to obtain and thus more of a status symbol. I see.
Starting point is 00:34:46 And that drives up the price even maybe a little like if it's harder to obtain or whatever. or you just think it's strictly that these people want it to be social. Okay. Yeah. I think it's a social thing too. Yeah. Yeah. This guy goes,
Starting point is 00:35:00 I'm very sorry to revive an old thread, but I just would like to add to the discussion that when I bought my no date sub back in 2013, I only walked in and bought my watch like a regular customer, even got a 10% discount. It was a great experience. I love that watch. I wore it when my kids were born. It's part of a few of my precious possessions.
Starting point is 00:35:20 Fast forward to 2020. and I was curious about a 36 millimeter steel oyster perpetual. The most basic watch Rolex sell. That's basically, yeah, I was going to say, that's fucking basic. It's like, you should be able to, yeah, that's the most basic watch. And the guy says, and the guy goes, nope, you have to build a customer relationship to be considered for a waiting list. Jesus. So this is like, this is like NFL tickets or whatever.
Starting point is 00:35:43 You have to like, you know, there's like, you can't even get on the waiting list. Get the relationship. They've turned it into a prestigious club. Buy some necklaces. You just get going and buy some necklaces. Oh, yeah, like how do you build a relationship with the watch guy exactly?
Starting point is 00:36:01 You ask him about it. You ask him about his kids and stuff. You like get to know his family or yeah, do you just buy other things from him? Yeah, once you've bought enough stuff, they're like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:36:12 I think I can put you on the wait list now. Yeah. And then you can wait 10 years. Maybe these ADs are like, drug dealers where they're like, hey, come, can I, can I like watch TV with you for a little bit? Like, you want to hang out for a little bit? Well, we're going to look into what goes on at these authorized dealerships a little later on with some reviews, and it is not good.
Starting point is 00:36:36 They are horrible. This guy goes, it's all about resale prices, isn't it? When it comes to Rolex, the ones who buy for five figures after waiting for a year can sell it at a premium. Don't know if that's the case with Omega's. Sorry, this is a question. I'm just a beginner watch enthusiast. And this guy goes, uh,
Starting point is 00:36:53 sort of. I think anyone who buys a watch specifically because it has high resale value is a moron. You should buy, you should buy a watch because you love it and want to wear it. If you're relying on making money off it in the future, you probably can't afford it. I think most people, what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:37:08 What does that even mean? Can't afford it. You can, but they can afford it. They're saying that they can buy it and then they want to, it sounds if it's like if this stuff does, people do this in every like industry you know where it's like if you can get something and you can make money off of it then it's worthwhile if there's like a market for it then it makes perfect sense right
Starting point is 00:37:30 if it's like i can buy a 10 000 watch and sell it for 20 000 or whatever why wouldn't somebody do that if they had the initial 10 000 dollars and an avenue to sell it broke maybe because they're poor as hell i think because maybe 10 000 dollars is chump changed to to these people. So it's like, oh, you can't afford it if $10,000.
Starting point is 00:37:52 I mean, it's, it really is chump change. Amelia, you're, I know you're exaggerating. You're, it is not,
Starting point is 00:37:57 it is chump change. Yeah. Like, it speaks to like what Amelia said before about it being this status thing where this person is just like, oh,
Starting point is 00:38:06 you can just buy it and sell it for like money. It sounds like you're poor and you need money and you're not, you don't even belong in this fucking watch game. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Well, he does clarify.
Starting point is 00:38:16 He goes, I think most people, myself included if I'm being brutally self-aware, love the social status that comes with wearing a Rolex. Everyone knows Rolex is a big ticket item. That's been, yeah, I mean, it is famous. It's like in the, you know, everyone does know you like definitely associate it with rich people for sure. This guy had a problem at an Omega authorized dealer, not a Rolex. And how much are Omega is going for? What do we say? Pretty 10,000. Okay, so similar. These are very expensive watches as well. Yeah, let me make sure I'm not, because there's about probably a million watch guys listening to this.
Starting point is 00:38:50 You don't want watch guys. 8,000, 10,000. Okay. Yeah. So I've honestly, I better look at my local Rolex AD than my local Omega AD. I've been wanting the terracotta aquatera since they were, quote, released last summer. I walked into the Omega store with my GMT master on Jubilee on. Not that it should matter what I'm wearing.
Starting point is 00:39:14 Okay. So I get it. He's saying like, I mean, he should have recognized me as a legit watch guy because I came in with this like high status watch. Is that what he's saying? Or is it like a cheap watch? See, I don't know enough about it. It was a Rolex, I believe. Oh, a Rolex.
Starting point is 00:39:28 So he's basically saying like, I think he should treat me a little nicer. I come in wearing a pretty nice Rolex. This is a Rolex. Did you guys see that? He's like trying to talk to him. He's like going like. Yeah, he's itching his eye a bunch and stuff like getting something out of his eyes so he could show off. rest.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Really interested in the terracotta aquatera. Yeah. I mean, like we were saying before, at that point, just wear two watches on each wrist. I can see it no matter what. I'm very rich. He goes, I walk in and asked to try on the moon watch first just to see how it felt. The first thing the guy says once he hands me the watch is unlike the watch you're wearing, you can actually buy an omega today.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Oh. So that sounds like a classic. like, you know, a competitor type thing, right? Where he started talking shit on the Rolex dealer. Yeah, yeah. He's like, you can buy this one. He goes, unlike, and he goes, I then walk over the Aquatera section and ask to see the terracotta one.
Starting point is 00:40:30 It's not in the display case. They said, it's not in stock. And the wait time's approximately six months. And I said, wow, that's a long time. While Omega makes great watches, I really feel like they're trying to be Rolex. You can't walk in and buy the new green SMP or the new aqua. When I walk in with the idea of buying a new aquatera, you do not bash my watch. I 100% take my business house.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Oh, my God. Oh, my God. That's a real watch guy. Yeah, that's a real watch guy right there. I think you're going to love this last sentence of his post. Rolex sold 1,200 watches in 2022 while Omega sold 560,000. Maybe more people just want a Rolex. Well, yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:15 that sounds like it from the numbers that you're citing yeah that sounds like more people want a Rolex yeah I'm not sure what oh he's now he's like angry at Omega he's mad at Omega he's mad at Omega is like in general like how dare you like you want to talk shit about my inability to get this watch like fuck you like you've disrespected me my honor like he's so bad and he's just like I don't think the guy was I don't think the guy was insulting your wall I think the guy really was legitimately saying like, no, you can get a watch here today. He thought you were interested in that other watch that you could get it.
Starting point is 00:41:53 And he was kind of saying like, hey, unlike the, you know, the, the, uh, Rolex, you could actually get this today. Like, he's trying to be a salesman. He's trying to like, he sounds like a good salesman and someone who's just trying to genuinely be helpful. And this guy just like took it in, in the most baby way. Stormed out. What the fuck is this one. against this and he's looking he said that i could get a watch today he's pulling out his phone and looking up sales numbers for the quarter he's so mad that he's looking up the same the quarterly sales
Starting point is 00:42:27 numbers to be like i just i can't imagine being offended by that yeah like how do you take how do you take that personally well i'm about to show you something even weirder yeah he doesn't he doesn't work for Rolex, right? Like it's not, you know, he's like taking offense by like the fact that he, this guy said a true thing that he's acknowledging that Rolex watches are difficult to get the day of. And he's just like somehow found a way to be offended. It's a real, it's a legit watch guy. It's like a top level watch guy. Here's another way to get offended. This guy goes, I ran into this attempting to buy a day date for my father's 50th birthday. I went to the same AD slash jewelry store. My entire family has purchased wedding rings an anniversary gives that for decades.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Now, can I just say, so many of these guys have a jeweler, and I cannot imagine the life you have to lead to have a dedicated jeweler. A family jeweler. One for your entire family that, like, you know, like. Family jewels. That's true. They sell balls too. It feels like, yeah, this guy's kind of coming in with it.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Who knows? I haven't heard everything that he's saying, but it sounds like he's kind of coming in with the attitude, like, my family has spent so much money here like my family has been coming here forever i should get respect not even based on me buying stuff but based on my grandfather buying things here it's true i didn't think about the fact that this guy's probably in his 20s and has never bought anything there he's just like but my family has like my you know my bloodline has bought many uh items from here pieces do you want lose my grandfather's business excuse me but um would you care to
Starting point is 00:44:09 take a look at my family tree. Yeah, any names stick out to you there? Why don't you cross-reference that with some of your... Because they had two in the case. I was allowed to handle them, try them on, discuss, etc. When it came time for purchase, no dice. Apparently, despite being in the case, they were for other customers. They wasted my time. My father loves his Gold Speedmaster purchased down the road, and that jewelry store, AD will never get a dime from anyone in my family again. Oh, so he's at the family dinner. Like, before we... before we break bread here tonight, I need to talk to you about something serious, everyone. We are no longer going to this particular jewelry store.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Luckily, there is a jeweler down the road. There's a dishonor. They've dishonored our family, our family name, everything we've worked to build ourselves up in this country. Yeah, that's, but that happens when you buy stuff. Sometimes you go somewhere and you're like, well, they've got an item, but it's like, you know, we don't have any in stock because somebody's already ordered it. Like that's a very normal.
Starting point is 00:45:12 It's an insult. Well, you know what? Me and my family will never shout from me again. Yeah. I went to go get a piece of furniture recently and they had the floor model out there really liked it. And then they didn't have any. They said, oh, you know, we have one in the back, but somebody's already ordered it. And I never considered telling Struck tube that my family will never be coming here again.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Good luck. Well, then here's another reason to get insulted because the guy replies and goes, I'm imagining an authorized dealer letting someone else handle a watch that was mine. Oh. Whoa. Okay. Now they're treating their watches like their ex-lovers. Yeah, the idea that somebody might put this on his wrist. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:02 And I'm just supposed to put it on my wrist when it's all disgusting and dirty. Yeah, it's really And gay Yeah, another man put it on his room Watch, no thank you I feel like This is such a regular thing with everything too It is nice, you buy clothing
Starting point is 00:46:21 Brian knows this more Because he's a hype piece But like it's nice when they give you The bagged piece of clothing Yeah, yeah, I like that Right? Like you know, it is nice It's not necessary though to me It's not necessary
Starting point is 00:46:32 But it is nice Like you go to Adidas or whatever And it's like oh, we got a fresh one in a bag. But like, yeah, you got to recognize sometimes you might have to buy a something that somebody else has touched before you. It's crazy to be like I was, I was not the first person to wear this watch, therefore it is tainted. Yeah, like me. Like my dad, when I was growing up, my dad got Sports Illustrated and we weren't allowed to touch it until he was done reading it. Oh yeah, we've talked about it because my dad was a big S-I head as well. I still. I still. I still.
Starting point is 00:47:06 have the sweatshirt that he got in the thing, like the old classic gray Sports Illustrated sweatshirt. But he didn't care. He didn't care. I did. Why couldn't? How come he had to be the first one? Because he paid for it. Because he's the man of the house. He's a Patriot. It's his, you know, like he has to. And I mean, let's be on my own money for this thing. Yeah. And it's like I don't, and you know, Brian's grubby hands or whatever getting all over it, I guess. But pages are sticky what he's done with it? Well, if it's the, I was going to say, I mean, if it's the classic swimsuit edition, then I can sort of understand not wanting Brian and his brother to get a hold of that first.
Starting point is 00:47:46 If there's a pair of tits in that in that book, then you, rest of the shirt, he's going to need at least three hours. Oh, my dad has highly conventional porno taste. But it's not come. It's just in saliva. It's saliva from him sucking the pages. He just didn't like it if we read it while we were shitting. Oh, but that's what you do with sports.
Starting point is 00:48:10 That makes sense. I agree. My dad encouraged that. He had it on the back of the toilet and encouraged people to, to read it when they were shitting. I got yelled at so many. It's the newspaper, too. I got yelled out for the newspaper too.
Starting point is 00:48:22 He's like, if it's not bundled up, I want to be the first person to read newspaper. I'm paying for the newspaper. That was his whole. The newspaper is very cheap. I know. Yeah. But the pages are very, The pages of a newspaper are very porous, so I can, I can see how he's like thinking about shit particles and like rubbing hand particles, like getting absorbed by the paper and then having to touch that afterwards.
Starting point is 00:48:47 That does make sense. And then the paper also is like, it's really crisp when it's all put together. But once you start opening it up and putting it back together, it does seem really, you know, like it's really has lost the like, I understand it maybe even more than the Sports Illustrated. Well, after he said that, after he said that, he goes, they're all lying sacks of shit, in my opinion. He used to be able to walk on, get a 25% on MSRP without even asking for it. That, I think that's true. So, oh, you would just get like 25% off, but, okay, so then it sounds like it was like one of those scam sort of things where it's just like, yeah. The guy does reply and go, these have price and hang tags on them.
Starting point is 00:49:26 We even talked about how to make an educated guess of how many links I would need to add. I assume they only let people handle them if they were absolutely buying. The rep busted out the box for me to look at as well. But yeah, I get your point. Now that I think about the situation more, having bought out of non-R Rolex, ADs now seem to have seen how salesmen operate. They were for sure using already sold or reserved pieces as floor models. Scummy.
Starting point is 00:49:52 And the guy replies to go, I like the idea that like you're buying a watch and he busted out for you to look at and he's like oh okay so you're just letting anybody you're just going to let me like touch it like that so that I guess anybody could come in and touch it yeah it's allowed then the guy replies so now a customer handled a watch reserve for me and it was scratched accidentally which by the way not at all mentioned anywhere I think maybe it is this is scratch is this his own story or this is no no no no he's like extrapolate like so the guy told him like he let me try it on he's like a hypothetical situation maybe that he's thinking about going to a hypothetical where he just added
Starting point is 00:50:34 he's getting himself yeah he's decided to get himself even more riled up about this by adding he's saying like oh because he let me try on the watch he's probably letting everyone try on my watches and scratching them up yeah like just imagine this situation where somebody is like I've I've already purchased a watch but it's still out there as a floor model everyone's you know trying it on somebody scratches it and then all of a sudden, I guess you wouldn't have to buy it then, right? If somebody scratched it. Well, he does say, uh, is it theirs now?
Starting point is 00:51:04 Is it mine at a discount? If I deny it. What is he? He doesn't understand. Is it theirs now? He's having to panic attack. Like, what do I do? Like, tell me what to do, please.
Starting point is 00:51:20 In this hypothetical situation, I am melting down completely. Yeah. Do I just let them have it? Have it? Is he trying to, is he trying to weasel his way into getting a discount? I mean, yes, because he says, is it theirs now? Is it mine at a discount? If I deny it, do I wait 10 years for the next?
Starting point is 00:51:39 It's all bullshit mixed with worst business practices. So. Yeah. Yeah, this guy goes a little bit ridiculous, your comment. You're a grown person that knew in advance what to expect. You should know there are better watches than Rolex, but you wanted to go through the experience. Like, if you were different and you are not, you're just a simple plebeian. Oh.
Starting point is 00:51:59 Whoa. Okay. Knocked up the plebeian word. Yeah. So this guy is like, you sound like you are too low class for. You sound poor. You sound poor to me. And I actually think you should be kicked out of the watch community.
Starting point is 00:52:18 I wasn't expecting that. Why you instead did not go to a Blanc Pond or JLC dealer. Why not a Vacheron or Hermes or Cartier, AD? Why not pay the extra 10% for the inconvenience and go gray market? Because you thought you were different and you're not. Probably you are the byproduct with too many participation trophies. Oh my God. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:52:43 You probably don't even, hey, you probably don't even know how to read cursive. You never drank out of the water hose. You never drink from those. You never drank out of that not once. Amelia, you probably, again, you're a different. generation you probably don't even remember what it's like to drink from the hose. I know what it's like a drink from a hose. Okay, good, good.
Starting point is 00:53:05 All generations too. You're right. I forgot it. I forgot it. It's a thing that every generation thinks is unique to their generation. I feel like that's a pretty timeless thing, I think. Yeah, yeah, but not anymore. Kids don't understand.
Starting point is 00:53:17 They get their fancy water bottles. They don't go outside. Yeah. They got the hydro flasks and the computer. It's like, yeah, they got their Stanley cups. They get their water from the computer. or on a hard drive, you know. Good luck when your arrogance says you got to go buy a Pat Tech or a Bugatti or want to make
Starting point is 00:53:35 yourself a member of Augusta National. Wait. What? So now he's bringing in like imagine a situation where you have where you're trying to become a member of like a prestigious golf course. Yeah. I think I would say like that you would expect special treatment there as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:54 Like you would expect to be able to become a member right away. Yeah. Instead of having to wait to do, you jump the line. And a guy goes, well, to be honest, if you do not have the money but would like to feel rich, you could always cue on these waiting lists, which I like is a good move. Like just you're never planning to buy one. Yeah, just cosplay as a rich guy for a little bit. Just carry the little receipt around that they give you when you like sign up to be on the list. Yeah, I'm going to get one.
Starting point is 00:54:22 Pull it out. We're going to McDonald's. Yeah, just pull it out and show people that. that is a pretty that's a pretty good move actually that's pretty smart and the guy goes wow you're making the decision to not buy something you aren't able to buy in the first place i'm going to join your protest and refuse to buy a pay tech nautilus on top of that oh that sounds like it would be funny if i knew what it was yeah it's a play tech nautilus i guess it's a really expensive watch i'm guessing is it pay tech or play tech pateek
Starting point is 00:54:57 Hey, pot tech, yeah, we don't even know how to pronounce. I mean, we don't even know what it is. We are sounding. If an actual watch guy gets a whole of this episode, holy. We're dead. These go from like 40,000 to $130,000. Yeah, that sounds like a nice watch. That's the one I get.
Starting point is 00:55:17 That's, that sounds pretty. I'll take the $187,950 watch. Do they look really nice? No. No. I'll bring them up the search on the screen. It's not it looks like a fucking watch. Just looks like a watch.
Starting point is 00:55:32 Like can you imagine buying something like that and then nobody ever notices it? I know. Yeah. Or accidentally like going underwater with it and then it's just ruined. Well, no. That is part they claim. Now, I'm glad you said that, Amelia. Because a lot of these people claim that they buy them for diving.
Starting point is 00:55:51 Because back in the day, you got a Rolex to dive. It's like a tool to do something. I don't know how deep you are or something like that or time or something like that. I don't exactly know what it is. But these watches are supposed to be able to go way underwater and dive for some reason. I had no idea that there was a diving community within the watch community. There is. There is.
Starting point is 00:56:16 I think I have some posts from a guy who claims to like do all the stuff. But this guy goes, why do you expect an AD to sell you a watch that sells for 1,000 above retail price? if they don't even know you don't even know you and you've never spent any money there. Do you expect the business to give you free money? I don't know what that question is. I mean, he's what he's saying is like, why would they give you a discount on this? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:41 Like you expect to skip the line in front of the dozens of equally serious buyers that you've been waiting for much longer than you? What is the AD supposed to do? Pretend that they will say you will watch, put you on a fake wait list when the reality is demand highly exceeds. supply. I don't see how being honest with you means you were treated poorly. What is Rolex supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:57:01 Magically produce watches out of thin air so they can meet demand? These posts are getting really old and pathetic. I think that, listen, that person sounds like a dick, but I think they are right. Yeah, I was just going to say. I think they are correct, though, about that. It's like, just like, this is the reality of the watch game is that, yeah, the demand for it exceeds the amount that they have. And so they don't, yeah, they're not, you're not going to, you're not going to
Starting point is 00:57:25 be able to jump the line unless you got a really good relationship with the AD, right? That's what it's all about, I guess. That's what I, now I'm starting to get it. That's what I'm saying. It's all about the social aspect of it. They create these, they create the system to gatekeep it to make it harder to get one. And so that you have to build relationships with each other. And yeah, I kind of agree.
Starting point is 00:57:49 I kind of agree with this guy. It's like, yeah, what makes you so special? So why do you feel entitled to get a discount when you don't even know your AD? You don't even know. You're not even in the game. Hey, where does the son go to school? Where does the son go to school? Exactly.
Starting point is 00:58:04 You have no idea. You didn't even ask them. It's interesting that you say this. So you do feel like these high price watch companies are sort of trying to bring people together in a way, though. Well, you know, they're trying to create relationships a little bit between people and they recognize that, you know, there's not enough of that in today's world. It's kind of a nice thing that roll.
Starting point is 00:58:24 and Omega are doing for people. It's kind of winning me over. I'm not going to lie. It's kind of nice. Appreciate it Rolex. This guy, so there's another thing that happens when you have an AD and that's, you got the call. You watch is in. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:58:39 Oh, my God. Imagine receiving that phone call. Sorry, honey. I got to go. Yeah. Like, yeah, that is, that would be, that would just feel like a million bucks to get that phone call. Because I've always wanted a silver. Like you've been waiting.
Starting point is 00:58:54 sometimes for years for a potential. Yeah, for years. Like I said, some guy waited 10 and then was like, do I have to buy that? Because you didn't want it anymore. Yeah, your life has changed. You changed your job. It's true. That would suck.
Starting point is 00:59:10 I've always wanted a silver dial date just at just and date just. And after waiting for about seven months, I got the call today. 44, 41 millimeter date just with silver dial, Jubilee bracelet and flew. Plooted bezel. This does sound gorgeous. Just love how classy and elegant and timeless the watch looks and feels. Well, you don't want to watch to be timeless. I mean, you need to have the time on there. You need its whole point of it.
Starting point is 00:59:42 First reply, though. First reply. Finally got the call on a date just. What a world we live in. Oh, that's brutal, man. So this person's saying again, you sound too poor to even be posting here. What does a date just go for? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:00:01 I actually, I would love, I'm sorry to make you keep looking up all of these, but just for some reference point, I want to know what they're mocking, like, you know, what level of watch they're mocking here. It is. I'm seeing $18,000 for newer ones, $6,000 for vintage ones. So this is still, yeah, that sounds really cruel. Like and like it's clear this this guy's excited about it right like he's posting about being excited about it These guys these guys get off on knocking each other down a peg
Starting point is 01:00:33 They do and also the people they buy the watches from and also probably people on the street who they see that bad What's the most expensive watch like is like so because there's such levels to it right where it's just like There are guys from like Silicon Valley where a million dollar watch that's what I'm saying so there's always going to be a bigger guy than you and you've got to keep that in mind when you're knocking down this like other person that there's somebody who could do the same to you with your Rolex or whatever well the guy got the guy replies another guy replies back to that he goes imagine thinking you got something exclusive by buying the most popular model from the most popular of volume driven luxury lock span so it's not a matter of the price of it it's just like there's low demand he's saying for there's too many of them yeah well wouldn't that
Starting point is 01:01:18 may so going back to the guy that was like Rolex sold this amount, but Omega only sold this amount. Wouldn't that make Omega better because the watches are less like there? Like there's fewer watches? Yeah, I think, yeah, you're right. It's the opposite of it, right? It's more unique. Yeah. It's more unique and it's like more difficult, but I guess it has to do with the amount produced versus the demand for it. There seems to be an idea though that within the community of watch guys I think it's more respected
Starting point is 01:01:52 to wear Omega like they're known as like being like well watch guys know that Omega's are really nice you know what I mean like because the Rolex the knock against Rolex for all of these people is that Rolex is like is that Rolex is
Starting point is 01:02:12 too common and everybody knows it's a show off watch Like, we would know if we saw a guy on a Rolex, like, oh, that's a Rolex. When, like, the guys that are really in the community are like, I want one that other watch guys know. I want to be able to identify other watch guys by them being impressed versus like, yeah, anybody could see a Rolex and be like, wow, Rolex. That's pretty cool. And they might not know shit about watches. Yeah, but we're just plebeians.
Starting point is 01:02:41 So, like, we don't know a good watch when we see one. But I know Omega, too. Omega is a pretty big. company like you know what I mean they're pretty well known as well I don't know it just was the one I ran at pot tech or pay tech and and they were the two I ran across as like no I would rather have an omega okay this guy goes how long were you on the list spend history and he replies spend spend what spend history can I get your spend history It's such a crazy thing to say to someone.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Seven months and zero spend history. Whoa. So brand new to the game. And you'd think a community would be inviting to somebody like that. Hey, there's a new person who's interested in watches or whatever. You will, but this guy replied and says, man, I just walked in a store and bought my. No list. That's why I laughed.
Starting point is 01:03:34 He didn't even say he laughed. He laughed. I laughed at you privately when you said it. And now I'm letting you know that I did laugh. earlier private. Oh my God. And the guy goes, where and what kind? That doesn't happen often.
Starting point is 01:03:49 He goes, no date Submariner from Benbridge Jewelers in Plaza Bonita in California, two-tone Submariner from Royal Maui Jewelers at Fashion Valley Mall and San Diego, in and out in 10 minutes. Fuck. But this guy does reply. He goes, sounds like a great way to live. Spend 12 grand on a watch in and out in 10 minutes. It sounds like you didn't develop any kind of relationship with the person you were buying the watch from. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:18 Yeah. What a loser. This guy doesn't even know his AD. It feels like, yeah, that the watch guys are like there should be like a process to it where it should like take up some of your time and there should be like the idea. The idea that my watch purchase is done in 10 minutes. It's like what am I going to do with the rest of my day? Show it off? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:39 Come on. You can show up you. I went to the Omega Forum. just to check in on them and I really like this community I really like this isn't on Reddit this is or this is on the Omega Forum. Okay.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Like there's a Rolex forum. I didn't find a lot of good stuff there but I think for bonus episodes in the future when I have more time I will find stuff on the Rolex form because those guys are the funny ones but I loved this thread I really enjoyed it goes
Starting point is 01:05:06 how often do you see any nice watch in the wild? I think I must hang out in the wrong places. Granted my post-retirement job is driving a dump truck, so I never see a nice watch being worn anywhere. Anywhere I go except what is on my own wrist. Last night, my amazingly beautiful wife and I attended her high school reunion. It was at a nice place in Monterey, and there were a few hundred people there.
Starting point is 01:05:30 Many financially successful folks among them. As is my usual habit, I looked harder at the wrist than at the name tags. The nicest watch I saw were aluminum apples. And the past year I spied one sub on a friend's wrist and a barbecue up my brother-in-law's house. That's my sum total of fines in a wild. Am I just a low-class ruby who hangs out with the wrong crowd? Or is the world really gone 99.9% G-shock and Apple? Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:05:57 This guy is like, yeah, does anybody even care about watches anymore? Well, this guy goes, I'm retired now, but I have a distinct impression that fewer nice watches were to be seen in bank lobbies or bank boardrooms. by the time I retired. So bankers aren't even wearing the goddamn things. Holy shit. The bankers are not wearing it? We've lost the bankers? This is a classic case of projecting.
Starting point is 01:06:25 I think this guy is self-conscious about like maybe he's not where he is at in life. And he's like everybody's part of that 99.9%. Everybody's a broke person. And I'm not hanging out with the right. crowd and like there's a there's a lot of subtext to what he just said. Amelia, I thought I retired, but I drive a dump truck was an interesting. I mean, maybe he just enjoys driving a dump truck or whatever. That's like a legit job.
Starting point is 01:06:55 That is that's like a real job. Yeah, that's a real job. I guess if you're just trying. But yeah, that's like generally considered a pretty like tough job to do. So it does seem like an odd thing to do in your retirement. Yeah. Yeah, if you need a post-retirement job, I would assume you're not in the echelot of people who are buying watches. And I would say this.
Starting point is 01:07:19 I would argue that you're not retired. I know. I would argue if you need a post-retirement job, you have not officially retired. You retired from your profession maybe or whatever. I think it sounds like a guy who drives a dump truck that probably owns the business and makes good money, but isn't like really excited to tell people on the Omega Forum that he drives a dump truck for a living. So he's like, I do it for fun. It's just something I like to do.
Starting point is 01:07:45 Sometimes I don't even have a job. I just fill it up and dump it somewhere else. It's fun. I mean, no offense to him either, but that does. It sounds like the dream of a toddler. It sounds like me when I say, oh, my dream job would be a truck driver. Or I could have been a jeweler. I have so many friends.
Starting point is 01:08:04 Brian's dream job when he was growing up was to be a, to work at this jewelry store. Really? Like down the street from his house. He just thought it seemed like the high class, like highest class job or whatever, which is this is a pretty good job, you know. You wear a suit to work. It was like you wear a suit to work and, you know, you work in a store.
Starting point is 01:08:22 Like uncut gems. Yeah, but not, it was more of a, it was not a like, you didn't have to be buzzed in to this jewelry store. You could just walk right in the door. It was just a regular one. And then, I mean, that wasn't where the real magic was going to be happening. his life though because his real dream was to have a lazy boy recliner and unlimited access to phone sex lines that seems like it's within the realm of possibility it was it was an attainable
Starting point is 01:08:50 dream which is kind of good but he never he never went that i don't think the job was attainable at all well the problem was that like i don't know that you could get the ponytail required to do like a proper jewelry job i'm going to hire a guy like i hate you to say they're not going to hire Queber at a at a jewelry store it's just not going to happen you've seen pictures of me chris yeah i'm not a jewelry store guy no no no no but you could have you could when you were wearing your bowler hat or whatever maybe that was way older no not anymore i wore but he went through an era of wearing that and i think during your bowler hat era you could have potentially you just needed to dress up the problem like you needed if you wore a suit no tie with like a fancy t-shirt and then like a
Starting point is 01:09:35 nice fucking kind of loud suit and then your bowler hat and you went in and like I think you're pretty you're like a smart guy and you're like personable as well and you can talk well I think you could have gone in and and gotten a job you know like I think maybe you go in there say hey hey how about I sweep the floors for a little bit or whatever you know what I mean like it's a like it's an entertainment industry job I'll do whatever you need from me I would buy jewelry from you 100% I mean you got you have jewelry on your face right now who you oh yeah titanium
Starting point is 01:10:10 is it an eyebrow it's not a eyebrow ring oh right right right he's got a number of them five of them yeah i don't think you can see them that's a that's a that's a lot of eyebrow piercings let's see yeah there they are whoa wait those are new i don't remember those being there the last ever saw you i think i had one or two the last time they are new they are new he's he walks by this store the period nursing place all the time and then he's just like I guess I'll get another one. They look great.
Starting point is 01:10:40 Yeah, they do. I like them a lot. I do. I like them a lot. They really fit your vibe. Yeah, he's all, old batty. That's what he's.
Starting point is 01:10:47 Alt baddie. Yeah. This guy goes a couple of nights ago, I went to a Greek restaurant in Maine's Germany and one of the servers was wearing a Rolex GMT with a Pepsi bezel that showed a nicely faded color shade. When he brought the beer to the table, I said, nice Pepsi you have there. he's smart
Starting point is 01:11:04 this is a funny story that starts out very funny and he goes he smiles I asked him if he knew why I called it a quote Pepsi which is funny I love the idea of like nice nice Pepsi and then he's like ha yes he's like
Starting point is 01:11:20 by the way do you know why I call it the guy who's like okay I was looking for a conversation to start here and you did not take debate on that I'm going to continue to try to have this conversation that's what all this is these guys are just starving for social interaction human interaction they they they just want to like compare dicks and just like you know get to know each other through their watches
Starting point is 01:11:49 they're using watches as an avenue to connect with each other because they think it's too gay otherwise yeah yeah yeah yeah they just don't talk to other people they they have this thing and common. Like I think it's true for a lot of the guys we cover. It's like they have a thing in common. It's all they talk about. You know what I mean? So most people are around them and they're like, I don't give a shit about you. Yeah, most people don't care about watches. And so if they do discover somebody who's like, this guy has a unique Rolex watch. Like he's like me and we could talk about this thing. And I can talk to him about it and he will care about the thing that I'm talking about. that is like a rare thing that they don't experience enough and it makes them feel really happy,
Starting point is 01:12:33 which you can understand. Like if you really love something and then you find somebody who's like, oh, they're wearing a fucking shirt that like, this guy's got a Fleet Fox's shirt on, you know? It's like, oh my God. I kick him out. He said yes. Who's the Fleet Fox fan here? I'm not actually.
Starting point is 01:12:51 Brian made a joke that it's the only band I listened to. I used to like Fleet Foxes. I like Fleet Foxes. Yeah. Chris loves them. It's the only man he likes. Yeah, I used to like, I like all kinds of bands. I like an eclectic.
Starting point is 01:13:03 I have an eclectic taste in music. I have more eclectic taste than music. Who's got more eclectic taste out of the two of you? I mean, he makes you say that. I mean, Brian, well, he likes limp biscuit and chord. I like all kinds of music. I like typo negative and danzig. Yeah, these are all still in the same.
Starting point is 01:13:26 All is it is some old metabolism. Not pre-black album. When he says old metallic, he means sane anger. Well, he goes, do you know why I call her Pepsi? And he said yes. Then I asked him how long he'd owned it. His response was since 1980 something. So this guy does not want to talk to you, sir.
Starting point is 01:13:46 I think you asked him three questions. He's working. He's got other tables that he has to deal with as well, right? So he's like, yeah, he has to serve other tables. He can't, you know, spend all. all day at your table, all night at your table, yeah. And he goes followed by, and I paid $1,900. And that's when I told him, I'll give you double the amount you paid for it right now.
Starting point is 01:14:09 But wait a second. But wait a second. He paid that amount in 1980 something. He's got to recognize that it's worth more now most likely. Yeah, I'll pay you $4,000, actually. Like even inflation alone like that. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:25 actually I'll double it right it's such a baller move to be like actually I'll double it I'll pay you twice what that is and it's like if anybody is willing to like buy it in that way then even if he didn't know before surely he knows through common sense that it's worth more than that it's valuable yeah exactly this guy goes in Italy it seemed like he couldn't swing a stick without hitting a guy wearing a Rolex even the servers were wearing gate just the guy that owned the pizza place down the street from our apartment at Rome had a good looking explore too. With that, the guy that owned the pizza place. Yeah. Yeah, no shit. The guys that own stuff have Rolex money. Yeah. With that said, the most interesting watches in my office, um, finance are a Coke
Starting point is 01:15:11 GMT and a Hulk sub. Everyone seems bemused by my watch interest as if it's bizarre that you might own more than one. Um, I think maybe they're, they don't want to talk to you about it again. I think that's what it is that he's like bringing it up too much or trying to be too flashy with it. This guy goes, it cracks me up that people see a watch on a person's wrist and are convinced it's what they think it is. There are a million copies,
Starting point is 01:15:37 homages, and all manner are similar watches that you wouldn't recognize as such unless you get really close and stare at it. And that would be foolish. It's the same with movie watches. The overwhelming majority are prop watches that just look famous watches, but
Starting point is 01:15:52 aren't even functional. They're just part of the look and it would be silly for the prop department to spend a fortune on real time pieces when camera ready prop watches work just fine and are easy to get yet punters freeze frame and magnify and are sure it's 30s Rolex xenograph on Matt Damon's wrist well I don't know though I feel like maybe they could use real watches but you're right this guy does reply and go absolute chump change in a movie budget silly of you to think the props department gives a damn Yeah, we're talking about with gigantic budgets and possibly, again, just somebody in production, like has the watch or whatever. But also, yeah, they do use props and movies for sure.
Starting point is 01:16:33 Yeah. I could also see somebody just like lending a nice watch to the movie and being like, oh, Matt Damon's going to wear this. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Or Matt Damon has that watch. Or Matt Damon. Or Matt Damon. Or somebody wore it before Matt Damon.
Starting point is 01:16:50 and Matt Damon refuses to put it on. Wait. Excuse, has somebody worn this yet? Because I'm not wearing it. I only wear new watches. This is a review of the Rolex Global Watch, Rolex Boutique Global Watch Company on 1119 Alburny Street in Vancouver. This is in Vancouver.
Starting point is 01:17:11 Yeah, I know where that is. That's where all the high-end shit is. Like, that's in this particular part of downtown where, like, they have all those super high-end stores. What part of Canada are you from, Chris? Sorry, I live in Vancouver. Oh, okay, cool. Yeah, this is where Brian does this.
Starting point is 01:17:27 It's kind of a cute little thing that he does where he might actually have one from where you are as well. I do. I have a loss of. See, he does that. He does that sort of to like, yeah, connect with us a little bit. And it's, I appreciate it because it's like, I know Albany Street. I've walked by that store. I know the exact one you're talking about.
Starting point is 01:17:44 Well, you're going to love Salman's review of this Rolex boutique. every time you walk by, you'll think of it. Yeah, I don't walk by it that much. I'm not in that part of town very often. We'll go walk by it when I'm there. I rarely put negative reviews, but looking at the 4.9 star rating from perhaps friends and relatives,
Starting point is 01:18:02 I felt obligated to leave a review. The friends and relatives of the Rolex store. They also have 4.4,000 reviews. It's not a mom and pop shop. Oh, so you got your friends to do some good reviews, eh, Rolex? You got your 4,000 friends to leave it. Just passing by this so-called Rolex store with my wife, having visited more than 50 Rolex stores worldwide.
Starting point is 01:18:29 Okay. Well, hang on. So he does, he has been to, I didn't realize that. He's been to 50. He's got a pretty, his opinion is probably carries a little more weight than a normal person. You imagine that for any other thing in the world saying something like that. I've been to at least 50 targets at the very, very. You're right.
Starting point is 01:18:50 There's nothing in this world that I've been to 50 of. And you wouldn't brag ever about it at all. You wouldn't just be like, maybe I've been to 50 gas stations. Yeah, you have, because you go there for ice cream sandwiches. And oftentimes they're out of ice cream sandwiches and you have to go to a different gas station. And you throw a temper tantrum and you start having conspiracy theories about the workers. This is on bonus episodes. They are hiding them.
Starting point is 01:19:17 He thinks that they're hiding. You think they're hiding the ice cream sandwiches? For themselves. He thinks that the good flavor that he likes. What's the flavor? My theory is, my theory is Brian. Oatmeal. Yeah, like, it's some, it's some like, like, cool.
Starting point is 01:19:32 That's a particular. Like, that's a very particular ice cream flavor. But, right. But every time I go to buy them and I buy them, the person at the counter is like, oh, these are the best ones. Yeah. So I know that they want them. They like them. Then they're hiding them from you.
Starting point is 01:19:48 And then as I said to Chris the other day, this happened, I said this on a bonus show, but I went in there and I bought like a bunch of them and they were like, you know, you can order those online. So they almost like they don't even want you coming in to get those ones, you're saying. And so I said, I said, my wife won't let me. Which is true. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they're gatekeeping the sandwiches from you much like the Rolexes. So this is a very similar situation.
Starting point is 01:20:16 It's not. I'll tell you the other thing. in his head, he just buys too many of them and they can't keep up on the stock. That's what's happening. That's the legitimate thing that's happening. I went in the other day. I went in the other day. There's a guy standing there.
Starting point is 01:20:30 He's like, they're all out of them. By the way, I'm a big fan. Yeah, because now other people are buying it. That's the other thing, too, is that Brian talks about it on the podcast. So then other people are like, hey, I'm going to go try these or whatever, you know? They don't try them, everybody. If you live in Columbus, go find it up there. Somewhere else.
Starting point is 01:20:47 Yeah. So many other ice cream sandwiches. Order them online. Yeah, you can get them online as well. I'm buying those ones at that place specifically. Just so he goes, I've been to 50 Rolex stores worldwide. It occurred to us that we've never visited this boutique. I'd heard so many bad stories about this store in the past of how entitled the management feels,
Starting point is 01:21:05 but it always given the benefit of the doubt, by the way. That's nice of you. Again, this has 4.9 stars plus 4,000 reviews. And it's an astounding. That's an astoundingly high rating on Google. And I will say that like, yeah, like the idea that they're like in time, like it's a Rolex store. Yeah. Like of course, like you know, they're going to be a certain way in there obviously, right?
Starting point is 01:21:30 That's what comes up when. Yeah, like most of the customers accept that and because they are the same way as well. Right. That's one of those things like we talked about that on a hype beast episode and we've read some reviews of like streetware stores and stuff like that. It's like, no, there's like they literally have no stop. They have like six things. That's how you know it's real. If you go into a streetware store and it's just completely chock full of a bunch of options,
Starting point is 01:21:55 that's all fucking boots. I don't know. Like every one of them. I'm not sure. I go to the streetwear store I go to. I'm pretty sure that the employees are saving the good streetwear for themselves. Because every time I go in there, they got nothing. The one I go to, by the way, there's also one in L.A.
Starting point is 01:22:13 They love me. They're like, hey, have you been out there? LA yeah I'm like I'm not gonna go to the store in LA. Are you talking about? Oh, I thought you were talking about gas stations with ice cream sandwiches. Oh no, I wish. They don't have them out there. And plus I don't have a freezer when I'm there. So I came and used them. He goes, I heard so many beds. So he goes, as we walked to the store, it was pretty empty as one expects from such a store. A lady came out and told us they are quote, really busy. At that moment gave us a business card and told us that we can contact the store if there's anything they can help with help us with. first I did not realize she was denying our entry. I said thanks for the card. We'd like to just walk in and see their watch models as we were discussing with my wife about a particular watch series. She again emphasized that they're so busy and we can contact them for inquiries. When I
Starting point is 01:23:01 repeated again that we would like to visit the store in which everything is for exhibition only and we know it. She said, sorry, you can go a hotel lounge next door and have a coffee. We can book you an appointment. I thought she was joking, but not really. She was trying politely and indirect. to ask us to leave. Well, it sounds, so they were busy doing other stuff that we're like dealing with like customers maybe over the phone and stuff like that. And it's like a lot of those places are appointment. Oh, that's what the guy said.
Starting point is 01:23:29 Like we give our salespeople give their undivided attention to the person that they're dealing with. So even if there's like three people in there. They're creating a relationship. It's not the same sort of like retail experience that you're used to at a store or whatever. This is like, We're getting to know them.
Starting point is 01:23:47 Yeah, we're finding out about what they love, what they're afraid of, you know, what they want to be in this world. Guys, get ready. He goes, I went back and asked her visiting the stores by appointment only, and I'm going to report this to Rolex Canada. Oh, man. Oh, she's going to get hers. Rolex Canada is going to be like, fuck off. You sound boring. Well, that's what I was thinking.
Starting point is 01:24:12 maybe this person felt judged by the by the worker maybe she like was like oh this guy's not gonna this guy's not gonna buy a watch he's too broke I'm not gonna let him in and waste my time on this on this yeah yeah that totally is probably the way he saw it whether or not that's the truth but like you're probably right that he's just like how dare you you know like yeah maybe he wasn't wearing like maybe he didn't have a good watch on or something like that or he was wearing like shirt wasn't ironed properly. Well, because I'm going to report this to Rolex Canada.
Starting point is 01:24:45 She said no, but I cannot let you in. She said no, you can't report it. No, don't you fucking dare do that. No, don't do that actually. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:24:55 I wonder if it's like that. You go into Rolex and it's like, you have a stain on your shirt and you're not allowed to shop there. Well, he says, he says, I've been told,
Starting point is 01:25:04 he goes, uh, but I can't let you in until a sales rep is available and we're busy. As mentioned, I'd been told that the store only works with the customers they already know and ignore everyone else. I'd also heard that the store has been violating Rolex Canada regulations.
Starting point is 01:25:18 Who'd you hear that from? Just out of curiosity, where are you getting that information? I've been signed information at Rolex Canada. He goes, being an official Rolex store, but I never believed it. I assume they're all rumors, but apparently not. I see. We felt really offended by the approach, gave her a business car back and left, and we're never to return to a store with such a rude attitude.
Starting point is 01:25:43 We're not getting, we're not getting the full side of the, no, that's all. There's times. When we read reviews on here, there's so much of it where you're just like, okay,
Starting point is 01:25:53 so there's something huge that you're leaving out of this. That you're missing. Yeah. That is important for the context of what's happening. Yeah. Well, he goes, Rolex is a luxury brand and there's exclusive mindset,
Starting point is 01:26:05 an exclusivity mindset, but for a store to feel that entitled to define such exclusivity as ridiculous. Once I called the store, asked if they have any watches in stock, the person on the phone literally laughed at me. I love when customers get laughed. I got so uncomfortable that I told her I'm in the U.S. and I was told they're getting new watches for walking clients all the time, as there's a lot more availability. So I told them I was from the United States. Have you ever heard of the United States of America? Yeah. Yeah. I'm not sure if you've heard about us, but we got a lot of money over here.
Starting point is 01:26:42 A lot of money. Ma'am, we, I am from the United States of America. So good luck. I mean, Rinky Dinkie didn't go likes Canada. I'm from the United States of America. Would you care to restart this conversation? She said on the, she goes, and I was told they're getting new watches for walking clients all the time
Starting point is 01:27:04 is there's now a lot more availability. She said on the phone with a sarcastic tone that I have never heard such a thing and it's funny. To me it wasn't funny. I'd actually called to ask a very legitimate question for God's sake. I did not deserve such a rude and humiliating attitude over the phone. There are so
Starting point is 01:27:21 many Rolex stores worldwide and most of them now have brand new Rolex watches and stock for walking customers, including a store in Richmond. Do yourself a favor and avoid this store with such an arrogant attitude. Richmond is where I grew up. That's like a suburb of Vancouver and
Starting point is 01:27:37 yeah, definitely has like a lot of rich people live in Richmond for sure. I could see that. I could see them having a real next door. Yeah. I'm only going to read part of this, but there's a man named Richard at the 9,000 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles at the Feldmar, Watch Company. Do you know West Pico Boulevard? Yes. You do. My friend and I visited Feldmar Watch Company for the first time last weekend. Unfortunately, we had a terrible customer service experience that was bad enough to deter us from going back. I'll be the first to say that Feldmore itself as a business has a nice layout. The store is spacious and they
Starting point is 01:28:12 have all the name brands that you'd expect with different varieties laid out and organized well. My friend and I were able to find the watches we were interested in without any trouble. However, things took a negative turn when we requested assistance with trying on watches. The sales is, well, of course. You can't be just trying on watches. Yeah, you need a relationship to do that for sure. Like 100% you need a relationship to do that. Yeah. You need a relationship. And once you try on a watch, that watch might as well be thrown in the trash. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:28:44 Guy tries it on and he's like tosses it. Yeah. The sales associate then helped my friend and I was an older gentleman named Richard. Richard created a very uncomfortable environment. Throughout the entire interaction, he never once smiled. Asked us about one time. So watch as we were interested. Hey, how about, hey, hey, Richard, maybe try smiling there, sweetie.
Starting point is 01:29:03 I love that. That is one of my favorite critiques of a salesperson. Yeah, not smiling. He didn't even smile. He didn't even smile. Yeah, I've, I don't, I'm trying to think, like, dealing with a salesperson, I don't think, like, unless I, like, crack a joke or something like that. I don't think that I, very rarely do they smile. Why would they?
Starting point is 01:29:28 Yeah. Between the salesperson and then the, the Pepsi waiter, there seems. to be a level of expectation from these wristwatch guys that like these customer service people just like like be very very nice to them. Yeah. Like a smile. Top level. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:45 It should honestly be the top level. If you're selling like that or like exclusive like exotic cars and stuff, you maybe should be the top level salesperson. I don't think that being the top level salesperson requires you to smile. It doesn't. And that's the thing is like, I think there's like a desperation to that. So it's like if you're selling something and you're like sort of desperate, then it's like smiling and like being happy or whatever or maybe depending on what it is you're selling.
Starting point is 01:30:15 But like we've talked about so much, there's so much demand for this. They don't have to. There's another person waiting to buy the watch. They don't have to like, you know, they don't have to like dress it up in any way or anything like that. Which feeds into our theory that this is all for social interaction. They just want somebody to smile at them. They want to walk around and try on watches and have guys smile at him.
Starting point is 01:30:38 Yeah. Because now he goes, in an effort to create more comfortable environment, my friend made a few attempts at small talk with Richard in between getting watches in and out of the display cases. When we were in the Omega section, my friend asked Richard about the stock and whether he knew what kinds of watches would be coming in within the next few months. Richard replied by telling us that he doesn't work for Omega and has no idea. Fair. It's kind of rude, but whatever.
Starting point is 01:31:02 A little bit rude, but it's a little bit rude, but it's. like, yeah, that's like he doesn't. He just doesn't know. I'm sure Richard said it nicely. Exactly. I don't know. I don't work for them. But like, yeah. I'm not sure. Like we're hearing it from his perspective only where it's just like sounding like he's totally shut them down. But I think you're right, Amelia, that it was probably just like in a polite way he explained to them that he doesn't have that information because he doesn't work for them. And only the workers know and we don't know when it comes in. Smiling like the Joker and saying. I don't know where it's
Starting point is 01:31:33 I got no idea man the dream salesman for this guy he doesn't work for a meg and has no idea and sometimes they only get one watch in six months later on
Starting point is 01:31:48 we were while we were in the IWC section my friend once again attempted to build rapport with Richard by asking if he'd also notice IWC's recently recent marketing efforts Richard replied by saying
Starting point is 01:32:00 that he doesn't work for IWC. Again, kind of a dick thing to say, but true and maybe, and Richard, to be fair, should know their marketing efforts. I would say that Richard should know IWC's marketing efforts. But who knows? He goes, Richard replied by saying, he doesn't work for IWC, and my friend should talk to someone at works there if he wanted to discuss their marketing.
Starting point is 01:32:25 The last section of the story visited was the tutor section where Richard helped me try on a watch. After trying on the watch, I noticed that it was the exact same model I'd seen online a few days earlier from a different retailer. The price at Feldmar was about 33% higher than what I had seen elsewhere. Uh-oh. Mr. Cheapy refunds. This little... Mr. Cheapy refunds' little things are coming up.
Starting point is 01:32:49 Wait a minute. I'm seeing money. Relax. So I mentioned the price difference to Richard and asked if Feldmar offered any kind of price matching. For some reason, this seemed to set up a ticking time bomb because the conversation instantly became incredibly hostile. Richard's volume rose and his tone immediately became aggressive. He's yelling at them. Money that did not happen.
Starting point is 01:33:13 Yeah. He's screaming at them in the store now. Would you like to try on any more watch you, sir? Richard. He began to get, he began to get. began to lecture me about how it was being disrespectful and shouldn't waste his time by trying on watches at a store. And that I should just instead go buy that watch from the other retailer if I wanted a better price. I think he's calling the bluff. Richard is, I think, again, though,
Starting point is 01:33:44 this is like Richard doesn't sound very nice if it's being told accurately, which I'm not sure about. But it's again, it's that thing where it's just like, you are not the market for us, high-end watch guys. Someone coming in here being like, hey, do you price mess? with this thing. He's just like, get out of here, man. I got like real people who want to buy watches, like who will pay full price for them or whatever. Yeah. That's what I'm trying to me. You are not special. Yeah. Yeah. I've tried on three watches already. You know what I mean? Like he's described like three watches he's tried on. Yeah. You know, like come on, man. Like this isn't like a dressing room. Yeah. You can just come in here because I have to hand you
Starting point is 01:34:25 each watch. You know what I mean? This isn't like Target where you can draw on a as many clothes as you want, you just take them to the back and you put them on. Yeah. I mean, the price, the idea of like, hey, do you price match this thing? And he's like, just go buy it from there. If that's what's important to you, like, he probably could have said it in a nicer way. But it sounds like Richard recognized and saw that this is not a serious buyer or not the kind of like person that they want shopping there. He began to lecture me about how I was being disrespectful and shouldn't waste his time by trying on watches at a store.
Starting point is 01:34:55 And then I should instead go buy that watch from the other retail. If I wanted a better price, he then went on to tell me that the other retailer wouldn't be able to support repairs because they're not an authentic tutor retailer, which was strange because he didn't even ask or know who the retailer was. Richard continued to go on and on. At this point, I was feeling directly attacked and anxious. My Apple watch even noticed that my heart rate was your Apple Watch above rest. No, no, no, hang on it. You're walking into this store with an Apple Watch on a net. This the context we needed for this is now we're all been illuminated here.
Starting point is 01:35:30 That is what happened. Richard sees you come in with your Apple watch on and he's just like, oh, fuck me. Oh, yeah, yeah, sure. Try on all the fucking watches you want. Oh, my God. I told Richard, I didn't think it would hurt to ask about price since oftentimes for big purchases. Like cars, customers don't pay MSRP. It's normal to negotiate.
Starting point is 01:35:56 I didn't ask for his name, thanked him for his time, and promptly left the store with my friend. So that is the end of the Richard story, which I thought was very funny because Richard was mean. Yeah. I say being mean to customers is my favorite thing that happened. If Richard was mean, I'm fine with it because this guy was probably annoying and it's funny when people are mean. Yeah, and it's funny these watch guys who are like. they expect this, you know, and then they're going in there. And again, it's that there's levels to it.
Starting point is 01:36:29 It's just like, I'm trying to buy this watch. And Rich, it's like, you're not even at the level of people that I'm interested in helping. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that is watch guys. Amelia, do you have anything you'd like to plug? Oh, not really. You could listen to Doe Boys podcast.
Starting point is 01:36:46 I'm a producer on that podcast. And yeah, that's pretty, you can follow me on Instagram at Skidmark 4. Yeah, Amelia is great. Always super nice to me. Yeah, we're excited to have you. I told you before we started really a huge amount of people message regularly saying that we should have you on. And I'm very glad that they did.
Starting point is 01:37:09 I think you were fantastic. It was great to meet you. That's too kind. Thank you. It was, Chris, it was great meeting you. Brian, always such a pleasure to see you and to have you on the podcast. You, there's something about you and, you and, exploring these subcultures that makes me feel super safe for some reason. I don't know what it is,
Starting point is 01:37:31 but like listening to like guys or like your insane experiences on doughboys, there's just like a level of comfort and safety that comes with it. And I'm just so happy that people like you and you as well, Chris, exist. It's just fun to really get into the weeds into these, into these different types of people. I love it so much. These are some of my favorite recent people, I think. Yeah, watch guys was always going to be a big one. I mean, I think that's like a well-known one
Starting point is 01:38:03 that even before starting this show, I kind of had an understanding that watch guys were like a unique breed of person for sure. And kind of easy to make fun of too because these are all like guys, we're all super rich, you know? So he can kind of rip on them and it's fine. We're punching up here.
Starting point is 01:38:19 Yeah, totally. And we'll see you all next week with Chat. Oh yeah, we got chat pile coming on. Hell yeah. Bye. Bye.
