here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Morning, William. How are you?
Hey, good morning. I'm great. I'm feeling really good.
How about yourself?
We are great as well.
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
I got to ask you, not about the game so much on Saturday,
but let's start with what the game started with.
Did you get a chance to check out any of the 50 cent concert?
Were you too busy prepping for the game against the Stampeders?
Oh,
well,
you know,
when I'm prepping,
I was pretty much 50 cents in my playlist.
So him being in the same building,
I actually got a little peek to go out there on the field in the end zone and see him.
Wasn't very close. I stood far and everything,
but my wife, she got some
good recordings, and it was great seeing
my boy Tony Yeo with my jersey
on. So that was exciting to start
the game off. And then the game went
according to script as well. You guys get the much-needed
victory at home to start off the home campaign
on the right foot. What were the talking points
afterwards in the room after you guys got your first win of the season
against the Calgary Stampeders?
Just believing in what we do, going out there,
executing at a high level, knowing that we have the guys in the room
just to click well and do what we have to do to win games every week.
Did you feel a particular pressure given that Montreal
was going to come after Vernon Adams because they probably
watched the game against the Argos and said, oh, these guys are having some protection issues.
So running the ball was pretty important. Yeah, you know, and it all comes with just
gelling together, though. You know, this is our first time playing together. There were some
changes up front. So I feel like any club would have
small little problems. All we had to do was just continue to work on it, find where our
mistakes were, and just be better next time. I feel every team sometimes have situations
where they just have to have better situations up front or in the backfield and everything.
And we feel like we're going to get better every week. So it's nothing that we're really worried about.
What can go wrong when there's a new group together?
Communication issues, assignment issues?
If you can, take the listeners through how a group actually does come together
in gel and maybe some of the bumps along the way.
A lot of time spending together, bonding
and everything and just making sure that
we're on the same page when it comes to terminology.
Sometimes when you
go to different clubs, like for myself,
things may mean the same, but
it may be said in a different way.
All it is is just getting on the same page
with the guys. Like I said
a couple minutes ago, it was some changes.
Once we keep the same
five guys up front, I feel like
things will get much better and we'll start
elevating throughout the season.
We're speaking to BC Lions running back William Stanbeck
here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
So last year, William, the Lions were pretty
lopsided on offense. They threw
I think it was 80% of the time
on their snaps. It was promising
to be much more balanced this year,
in large part because you made the move from Montreal to BC.
So Saturday's win over Calgary.
Vernon Adams throws just 29 times.
You handle the ball 15 times.
Is that more of the balance that you and the Lions are looking for on offense?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, and like I say, I think we'll continue to progress.
There's been times where it was a little shaky in the game,
so we decided to pass it, everything like that.
But I feel like as the season goes on, you know, I'll get more touches,
you know, whether it's running the ball or catching the ball.
You know, I'm able to do it all for my team.
So whatever the game plan is, it just depends on who we're playing sometimes.
You know, things can be a little bit different where we have to pass a little bit more,
more than running.
Or teams where we play, we have to run the ball a little bit more.
So whatever is called, whenever my number is called,
I'm going to do whatever I can to help the team in any way.
And it's only the beginning of the season.
It's really early.
We've got 16 regular season games left.
So I'm excited about it.
We've got Winnipeg this week.
It's going to be a tough matchup.
Yeah, we know they lost two games and stuff like that.
But, you know, it's still the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
You got to make sure you shop up and be ready.
The man on her center, Vernon Adams Jr.,
you're obviously familiar with him having played with him in Montreal.
How big an impact did he play on you deciding to join the BC Lions this offseason?
A huge impact, you know.
Obviously, knowing that I was going to be a free agent,
it was something that I was thinking of.
It was just the best fit for me.
You know, going somewhere where it may be familiar faces and everything,
but Vernon Adams was somebody that I felt I could join, you know,
forces with again,
and it would be a great fit for me.
I already knew that this is a team that passes the ball a lot.
Me, I don't mind blocking when I need to.
Whenever I need to block, I'll block for whoever.
And I know that they needed a little bit of help getting over the hump in the Western Finals.
They've been there the past few years.
So I just wanted to be that extra piece to bring some physicality to the running game and just help the squad get over the hump in the Western Finals. They've been there the past few years. So I just wanted to be that extra piece to bring some physicality to the running game
and just help the squad get over that hump.
What's the biggest difference from the Vernon Adams Jr. you played with in Montreal
compared to the Vernon Adams Jr. you're playing with now in B.C.?
Just the maturity, man.
Just how hard he works.
Just the type of person he is in general.
He's very caring.
He's hardworking.
And, you know, he believes in everyone here.
And, you know, that's what pushes us all to make sure that we do our best
so we can, you know, produce for him, get open, protect him,
and do what we have to do for him to deliver the ball down the field
and everything.
And for him just to be successful overall, you know, he's a great leader.
And he's somebody that I truly would love to be successful overall, he's a great leader and somebody that I truly
would love to continue playing with
hopefully for the rest of my career.
What's the difference,
biggest difference between running in the
American game versus the Canadian game?
Just
the downs.
Down south, you have four downs.
Up here, you have three.
You rarely get that many opportunities.
So whenever you do get the ball on first down,
you really, really want to try to get five or six yards.
So I would just say emphasizing the run game on first down
can be a little bit more, you know, harder, I would say,
because you have less downs.
You have one less down.
And to your advantage here, somebody who runs the ball, you have a lot more space on the field.
So I think this is probably the cons to it, to the CFL and NFL. But I love this league.
Three downs never really bothered me. I feel like I'm a guy who can get five yards a pop.
So I feel like that's been successful for me in my career.
You grew up in New York and then you played college ball
in Florida and Virginia. How much did
you know about the CFL before you signed with
Montreal in 2018?
I mean, I didn't know much
of it. I really didn't know the history of it, but I would
see it on ESPN sometimes, you know,
just watching TV and just
seeing different sports and all that. And I would
see the Alouettes, actually.
And I've seen one game when Chad Hotchkiss was in it,
but I really wasn't paying attention.
You know what I mean?
I was like in high school and everything like that.
I didn't care.
You know, I just seen it.
And I was like, oh, you know, there's a team in Montreal,
it's Canadian football league, and I was just watching it.
And that was probably the only game that I've seen until 2018.
And my agent at the time told me that I was on his necklace for the Alouettes.
And that's when I decided to come up.
So I've probably only seen it one time on television.
Speaking of the Alouettes, you've been pretty outspoken.
You've got a chip on your shoulder about how things ended in Montreal
and how last season played out.
You guys don't play the Owls until September 6th.
You go to Montreal in September to take them on.
Is it fair to say that you have that one circled in your calendar?
Truthfully, they're all circled in my calendar
because I want to do the best I can to put our team in the best position
to win every week.
But when we do go out to Montreal, it's going to be really fun.
I'll be excited to see those guys again, you know,
give them the hugs and all that, see them, you know, talk to them and tell them how it's been to be really fun. I'll be excited to see those guys again. Give them the hugs and all that. See them
talk to them and tell them how it's been and everything.
But once the whistle
is blown and we're in between the white lines
it's going to be a
match that everyone wants to see.
What's it like to be 29 years old
and have accusations that you've lost
a step? You're 29!
Yeah, I don't know.
I never really care about what people say.
You know, people can say what they want,
but if you see me, I don't think anyone should say how I felt.
You just have to have the opportunity.
That's all it is.
You know, success comes with the opportunity that you're given.
So all it is, I'm just being patient.
I'm just waiting for my time again.
And I know my time is still here.
Like you just said, I'm only 29.
I'm still running around and practice,
flying around, doing what I got to do,
you know, to look good on film and everything.
So, you know, when it matters the most,
as long as I produce and I'm successful,
I don't really care what the critics have to say about me.
I'm still A-place.
When you turn 30, that's a different story, man.
I mean, you're still in your 20s. I mean, 30 is a different story, man. I mean, you're still in your 20s.
I mean, 30 is a different story.
Yeah, I mean, even turning 30, as long as you're still putting in that work in,
it doesn't really matter how old you are because age is only but a number, right?
You know, if you're still producing better than a 24-year-old and you're 31 years old
and you're not asking for that much money, it doesn't really matter.
That's how I look at it.
You know, they can say anything about my age.
I came back from a broken ankle in 22.
I wasn't supposed to come back, but I worked my butt off.
I still did.
Stayed with the team, won a breakup, you know,
had a touchdown in a breakup.
Feel like a lot of people do that sometimes.
But, hey, I'm still going to work every offseason
and be prepared so, you know, I can have a job every season.
Well, the returns against Calgary last weekend were good.
15 carries for 69 yards.
William, hopefully you can build on those numbers
and you can get another win this weekend in Winnipeg.
Thank you very much for doing this today.
We really appreciate it, and good luck against the Bombers.
Yes, sir. I appreciate that. Thank you. It was my pleasure.
Thank you for having me.
Yeah, thanks for coming on. We appreciate it. That's William Stanbeck, a loud, beepy phone here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Yeah, I think I mistakenly said Montreal instead of Calgary, but Montreal was on my mind because he did not have the best exit from the Montreal Alouettes from his perspective.
It's good for the Lions, though.
So he felt like he was being phased out and underutilized last year by the Alouettes
because they wanted to bring in a younger running back
who wasn't 29 years old.
And he was like, I've been a two-time CFL All-Star.
I've had good chemistry in this backfield
with a multitude of different signal callers.
And, you know, as he said,
I scored a touchdown in the Grey Cup. Like, I hope you hope you guys win there you know i was there on the big stage
and then came west signed here thanks in large part to the relationship he had with vernon adams
and i mentioned it to him in the call like um i did not realize that the lions were so pass heavy
last year i knew that they dropped back a lot but i didn't realize it was 80 well because they
couldn't run the ball.
Right.
And I do wonder if this was a nod to,
okay, we need to balance out this offense
a little bit more.
And Stanback's a guy that can,
I mean, he's shown it throughout his career
that he can carry the load for a CFL team
and one that wants to be competitive
and go far in the playoffs.
Age is such a funny thing.
I mean, I was joking around with him,
like, you're only 29.
And then I said, I mean, when you're 30,
that'll be different.
30 to me, I'm like one of those guys that goes shopping and sees a price of $9.29, and then I said, I mean, when you're 30, that'll be different. 30 to me, I'm like one of those guys that goes shopping
and sees a price of $9.99.
That's pretty good.
But if it was $10, I'd be like, that's too expensive.
Well, it's like a $2.49 batting average.
Awful.
Get him off the team.
$2.50?
You can live with that.
You can live with $2.50.
One out of four, he's up there hitting.
Okay, we're going to do some what we learned from our side of the table here
to set up the final half hour of the program. I think we're going to do some what we learned from our side of the table here to set up the final half hour of the program.
I think we're going to start for
a second consecutive day. We might do this
every day this week with A-Dog because
you did very well in the leadoff position.
That's a baseball term, by the way. Leadoff position.
Baseball.
And A-Dog,
what we learned with A-Dog are always great because he's
learning along with the listeners every
day. Just learning new stuff.
Yeah, like earlier today I learned what the agrodome is.
Didn't know it at 7 o'clock this morning.
Oh, the Superdog building?
That thing?
A-Dog, remember when I had you believing that on a par 3 you hit your 3 iron?
Yeah.
Or a 4 iron?
Well, I mean, it sounds correct.
It doesn't sound correct.
13 iron and your 14 iron.
Yeah, you got to line up the threes together, right?
I mean, that's just dumb.
And this is why we love A-Dog.
So A-Dog, without further ado, can you tell everybody what you learned?
Yeah, Summer Movie Nights is back.
It's this really cool free thing they do at the art gallery every year.
And you pretty much just go and a bunch of people go and see a big movie on a huge projector,
big screen, and they set it up in front of the art gallery downtown.
July, you got July 4th, it kicks off with Barbie.
July 11th. I still haven't seen that.
I haven't either. I still haven't seen that. It's good.
It's on my PVR, and I'm kind of
like, eh. You'll get to it.
Will I? It's worth a watch. Maybe not. It's worth a watch.
July 11th, Devil Wears Prada.
Another one I want to see. July 18th, you got
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
My favorite of the three, and a lot of people
picked Raiders. Last Crusade's my favorite.
Certainly not Temple of Doom.
Temple of Doom's great, okay?
Temple of Doom was not great. Yes, it was!
I will not take any Temple of Doom slander.
It was the least good of the
original trilogy, but it was still really good.
July 25th, Princess Bride, classic.
August 1st, Mamma Mia.
August 8th, Knivy's Out. Knivy's Out. And August 15th, Princess Bride, classic. August 1st, Mamma Mia. August 8th, Knivvy's Out.
It's Knives Out.
And August 15th, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.
So yeah, a bunch of free movies at the Art Gallery this summer.
Again, this is a thing they do every year.
It's always a lot of fun, and it is completely free.
Can you imagine if they had like a super violent R-rated movie?
Yeah.
Yeah, July 15th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is playing.
Tourists going, I'm like, what's going on in this city?
I like it.
Yeah, that's what we're talking about.
They're really getting violent.
Okay, good what we learned.
Exorcist is also playing.
Let's do that in there at the end.
I'll go next.
I have learned that the NHL has booked its entertainment
for this year's NHL Awards show at Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.
Oh, no.
I'm already nervous.
Is it Chaka Khan?
No.
He will not be there.
Right.
That was the day that he also learned to Chaka Khan.
Yeah, that Chaka Khan is female.
Okay.
This is the host for this year's award.
I don't know if they booked the musical act yet.
I'm actually kind of scared to check, but this year's awards will be hosted by comedian
Matt Friend.
Matt Friend.
Matt Friend.
Who is that?
Who is that?
He most recently appeared on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, and he also conducted
viral interviews on the Golden Globes
red carpet. He's on Netflix, too.
He has a Netflix show. Co-hosted by the friend of the guy
that plays Huggy Bear. He headlined
Netflix is a joke
this year for 2024.
That is a random series.
He also has a podcast
on Bill Maher's Club Random
Studios label.
I don't know anything about this.
Does he know anything about hockey?
Yes.
Here's the quote from Matt Friend,
my friend and yours, Matt Friend.
Growing up, all my heroes were hockey-obsessed comedians.
I am so thrilled to join the list of my heroes
like Will Arnett and Kenan Thompson
as host of the NHL Awards,
especially as someone who grew up a Chicago Blackhawks fan
during the dynasty.
I'll have to get started.
Who are his hockey-obsessed comedians?
Norm MacDonald?
Well, Bill Burr is a hockey fan.
Will Arnett and Kenan Thompson, apparently.
No, but he's just mentioning the previous hosts.
I think those are also the hockey-obsessed comedians.
I don't know if there's...
There aren't that many of them.
Was Kenan Thompson really into hockey?
The Venn diagram of hockey-obsessed comedians
and former NHL awards hosts is probably just one.
I don't think there's...
So anyway, you have...
I perused his social media,
and it seems that he does a lot of political humor.
Oh, good.
They should bring that to their show.
American political humor. If there's one thing the NHL wants to do, it's political humor. American political humor.
If there's one thing
the NHL wants to do,
it's political humor.
I want to say
nine out of the ten clips
I've seen both have...
Has anyone noticed
how this country
is really divided right now?
Nine out of ten
were Trump impressions.
Oh, boy.
So here goes Matt Friend
doing his Trump impression.
We are going to win
so bigly in November.
A lot of people
will forget about
this sham, crooked trial.
Stormy Daniels
really just a pig if you've ever seen one.
But thank you very much.
We will make this country great.
China, Mexico.
I would watch that award show.
That was Matt Friend.
That was a good impression.
I would watch the award show if he hosted as Trump.
Yes, if he just did that impression the entire time.
I like how he just ends the clip with St. China and Mexico.
The chaos of it.
Just for the chaos.
Does anything the NHL does make you cringe as much as the NHL awards?
No, that is the cringiest award ceremony of any time.
What about that five-year deal with Green Day they signed?
That was good.
They played one show, and that was it.
We're about to find out how cringy it's going to get on June 27th
at Fountain Bleu
in Las Vegas.
Four o'clock our time.
They have parsed down
the awards show.
Yeah, that's good.
You'll notice
that they've given away
a lot of the awards already.
Like the Jack Adams
and the Lady Bing
and all those other awards
that nobody cares about.
They're just saving.
I was hoping
Taco would be able
to have like a speech
where like,
I'm a big awards guy.
Now, since we're on the subject, I think this was a mistake.
I feel like Coach of the Year is major enough that it should be elevated to the awards show.
I think so, too.
It's like, you know, the Academy Awards that they give away to the nerds, the arts and science guys?
Yeah, don't they have a night before?
Right.
A morning before.
It's in the basement.
It's a breakfast.
Or like the audio-visual Oscars.
Yeah.
Just keep them off.
They give them away at the breakfast buffet at the Ramada.
They're like, here's your award.
Also make yourself a waffle.
And then you go.
But I feel like.
Is there any syrup?
Yeah, I feel like.
No syrup budget.
I feel.
No.
You got to bring your own.
I feel like the NHL is kind of telling on itself by suggesting to us what they feel
are the important awards and the not important awards.
This is the first time I've cared about the NHL awards
in so long. Why? Because there's a bunch of
Canucks nominated. I actually want to
see if they win.
Honestly, I generally do not care about the
NHL awards whatsoever. What, are you going to be watching it live?
Just come on.
No, not really. But I'll be watching it.
That's the point. Normally I don't watch it.
We all know that Andy's favorite award is the Vizina.
It's true.
Moo cow.
It'll be a tight Vizina race this year.
Oh, come on.
What?
It will be.
Andy.
A lot of competition.
You could have left it.
What are you guys going on about?
You didn't have to go there.
Those are the best kind of races.
It's true, though. Okay. Those are the best kind of races. It's true though.
Okay.
I've got what we learned.
I've got what we learned.
I learned that the American athletes walking into the Paris Olympics opening ceremony will be wearing navy blazers from Ralph Lauren and blue jeans.
Oh, nice.
They're going to be wearing jeans into the opening ceremony.
That's dangerously close to a Canadian tuxedo.
I respect.
Has any other nation worn jeans into the opening ceremony?
There goes Halford on the Google machine.
I don't know what you're doing.
Opening ceremony, jeans.
I'd be amazed if it actually answered the question for you.
At any rate, that'll be an interesting look.
I believe the Canadians had denim jackets.
That's not the same as jeans.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Oh, okay.
Right.
They should have gone full Canadian tuxedo.
That would have been incredible.
Now, I know the U.S. has gone with the polo Ralph Lauren garb for a while,
so I'm not surprised.
But I don't think they've ever had jeans.
No, I think jeans is a new one.
They should play some of the sports in jeans.
Now, will they go?
What kind of fit will the jeans be?
Can you imagine you're the athlete?
Do you-
Bell-bottom.
That's a great question.
No, seriously.
The Kramer jeans,
like so tight,
you can barely move.
Michael Jordan,
Jenko jeans.
Well, some people look completely,
like some people just,
these are the types of jeans that I like
and I look awful in the other jeans.
I mean, most of the athletes will look okay.
Probably.
Everyone should be allowed to pick their own jeans.
It should be like a jeans kaleidoscope.
What kind of jeans are you, Adog?
What do you like? I don't usually
like the blue denim. I go for
darker colors usually.
But do you like slim fitting?
I have a mix. Slim,
regular, bell bottoms.
He likes to mix it up. What about you, Laddie?
Spandex.
A lot of skinny jeans.
I don't have a lot of meat on the bone slim slim fit for me was a nice it was i was like oh this is good these
but some of the other ones i'm just like i'm swimming in them so now feels like an appropriate
time to pass along the anecdote from this morning um so i went to go get some coffee at like 5 50
okay and uh sonja from City News walked in,
and she looked at me and she said,
oh, you're wearing different colored sweatpants today.
To which I said,
it's a sad indictment of my life
that I am defined by the color.
Thank you for noticing.
Not that I'm wearing sweatpants,
but the color of her sweatpants.
And then as soon as she said it,
Laddie walked around the corner
wearing an all gray sweat outfit.
Top to bottom.
Sports.
I just think I'm going to be wearing the same type of jeans that I always have.
Like I'm going to be stuck in the jeans that I'm wearing now because I've tried on some of the new types of jeans.
And I'm like, these look ridiculous. How many guys, by the way, have been in this situation where their wives or girlfriends
have been like, I bought some new jeans.
I want you to give me your honest opinion about what you think of these, but they're
like the new style jeans.
You're talking like the baggy.
Well, or just really high waisted or something.
And then she'll be like,
they're really in style right now.
And you're kind of like,
the answer is always,
what do I say?
Great.
They look,
should I ruin my life or should I?
Yeah.
You just say they look amazing.
I like how they go above.
I am not choosing violence.
Do you think there's some guys that still are like,
honesty is the best policy.
I've been married 19 times.
Moog out.
Coming up on the other side of the break.
By the way, do you have anything other than sweatpants in your arsenal?
Or are you just a sweatpants guy?
In my pant arsenal?
You're just Flanders when you open your closet with just multicolored sweatpants?
I mean, there's a lot of sweatpants and track pants for sure.
But I do, I have some jeans.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
I don't know if I've ever seen you wear jeans.
I don't like wearing, they're very restrictive.
Oh God.
I like this text from Christian.
What am I, going to the Olympics?
I like this text from Christian.
Jeans are like your haircut rule.
After 25, you just take one and run with it.
Yep.
That's it.
What kind of jeans do you have?
Jeans.
Good call.
Good call. Good call.
You want to do,
you want to do,
what the hell?
We're already way up against it for time.
Might as well.
Yeah.
We'll do all listeners on the other side.
Yeah, you know what?
What the hell?
Laddie wants to do.
So you do your listeners on the other side?
We'll do the listeners on the other side.
Okay.
Laddie wanted to do the New York Mets
who are doing everything they can
to keep the good vibes going right now.
Well, the fans were treated
to this clip I'm going to play
when they were watching, if they're watching online, MLB TV is, you know, when it goes to commercial break,
it usually goes to a screen saying commercial in progress or whatever.
It cut back randomly during the commercial break to,
I can't even describe it without laughing,
but a mariachi band that was playing at the stadium covering Creed's Higher.
Just take a listen.
And then it cut off from there and went back to commercial break.
Everyone was just like, what the heck was that?
That was amazing.
Right?
I love the little trumpet.
It's like the song was made for mariachi.
It was great.
Is anyone paying attention to what's going on with the Mets?
So the Mets have had a pretty lousy season.
They haven't been very good.
They're below 500.
So Steve Cohen hired a mariachi band to confuse everyone.
About a week ago, they had Grimace throw out the first pitch.
Yes.
I can't remember who the game was against, but I mean Grimace.
Grimace the McDonald's guy?
The large amorphous blob.
Did you just say the McDonald's?
Do you know another Grimace?
Is there another Grimace out there?
There could be.
Oh, Grimace Harris, my neighbor.
Oh, the McDonald's Grimace.
Oh, Grimace Harris.
Anyway.
My son is also named Grimace.
We call him Grimace.
Grimace, get to the table.
It's dinner time.
He threw out the first pitch, and it was hilarious. I don't know the inspiration behind it.
I think it was an ad for McDonald's.
Whatever the, probably, Greg.
He probably wasn't doing Burger King.
Whatever the case, he threw out the first pitch.
It was electric.
It was a great pitch.
Everyone went crazy.
And the Mets started winning baseball games.
They're 6-0.
They've won six in a row.
Yeah.
They're three games below 500 now.
In their Grimace era.
And then it's funny because the sports
talk radio guys in new york are going crazy because they're like i can't believe that all
you idiots think that grimace has saved the met season and everyone's like go grimace he was
poking out he was he was poking out from behind the the batter's box too so during the play he
was you could see grimace poking out it was god i would love that to happen to the canucks and
for drance to have to deal with it that's what i I'm saying. No, it's because their zone entries are improving.
No, it's not a mascot.
I think it's Grimace.
So anyway, now I think what the Mets are doing is just...
Look at their PDO.
Look at Grimace.
See, he's right over there.
Every time he looks, he scores.
Big and purple and inspirational.
They're leaning into the absurdity of the whole thing.
Anyway, we're way up against it for time.
Mukau, all that.
Former producer Dom texted me that the, um,
the guy that's doing the NHL award show is also an impressionist.
Apparently you missed the part where we played the impression.
Yeah.
Donald Trump.
Like a 30 second Trump clip.
Thanks for listening,
Dom.
Coming up,

So I have a
question uh we were talking about the aggerdome earlier and the aggerdome is famous for many
things including being the site of the final fight between rocky and drago correct in rocky four
yeah what is the best movie ever filmed in Vancouver?
Happy Gilmore.
Vancouver proper?
Happy Gilmore.
Yeah, just Vancouver.
Because I wanted to extend to... It's Happy Gilmore.
Okay.
So, A-Dog has voted many times.
Repeatedly.
Or maybe Jumanji.
Yeah, Jumanji was here, wasn't it?
It was, yeah.
One of the first people.
Rumble in the Bronx?
I need to see a list.
Do you remember when they were like,
you'd be like,
it's not the Bronx.
It's quite obviously not the Bronx. Rumble on Georgia Street.
How often does Vancouver get passed off as
Seattle or somewhere in Washington,
right? I mean, both the first two
Deadpool movies were filmed here. Yeah, Deadpool.
Yeah. Isn't the answer Rambo? Yeah, does Rambo
count? It's filmed in Hope. Yeah, but that's in Hope.
That was Hope. That's why I said Vancouver proper, like
extending out to the first ballot. Hope is not
really a suburb of Vancouver. I know, but it's a bit of a community. Oh, a little bit said Vancouver proper. I'm extending out to the first ballot. Hope is not really a suburb of Vancouver.
I know.
It's a bit of a community.
A little bit of Air Bud.
I'm very familiar with the geography part of it.
That's why I said extended.
The answer, of course, is Bird on a Wire.
What about Stakeout?
Don't hate it.
Don't hate it.
Don't hate it.
A really great, that great 70s horror movie with George C. Scott, The Changeling was filmed
here and it was really, it's actually really good. Really? It was filmed here? It's a really good movie. Wow. Have you seen the movie with- That's kind of great, that great 70s horror movie with George C. Scott, The Changeling was filmed here and it was really, it's actually really good.
Really?
It was filmed here?
It's a really good movie.
Wow.
Have you seen the movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, 50-50?
Yeah, I was going to mention it because they tried to pass it off as Seattle in that one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's kind of the one I was referencing.
Yeah, that's got a lot of, and deep cut Vancouver too, residential neighborhoods.
They were at the Heights, Burnaby Heights.
Yeah, that's a good one.
Seth Rogen produced it, right?
No, I know.
It's a good movie, actually.
I quite enjoyed it.
It's good.
Anyway, are we done with that part of it?
Yeah, just wondering.
We are in hour three of the program.

That was filmed in Vancouver?
I didn't know that.
I did not know that.
It was supposed to be in Chicago, right?
I'm putting you on the spot big time.
Adventures in Babysitting was supposed to be in Chicago?
I think it was supposed to be.
They went to a blues bar.
Okay.
Was it Christina Applegate in that?
I don't think so.
Adventures in Babysitting? I don't think so Adventures in Babysitting?
I don't think so
I'll look it up
Don't worry I got computers
One listener mentioned Elf
And like there are lots of big movies
That have been filmed here
But they've been filmed exclusively
Like in studios
Right
It doesn't count
I'm talking about
So you can't really tell where it is
Like Elf
With a lot of green screen
Adventures in Babysitting was
Elizabeth Shue
Yeah that's right
Elizabeth Shue
Okay
That was an okay movie.
It had its moments.
Dan, with what we learned,
the Mariners didn't play last night
and their lead in the AL West
extended to nine games
with a Texas loss.
That's the largest lead
in any division.
At some point,
this show is going to talk
about the Seattle Mariners.
Yeah, we did it yesterday.
We did it a little bit.
We basically said,
you know, they got to add a bat at the trade deadline.
They got to do something at the trade deadline to reward not only the team
for what they've done so far, but also the fan base
who are going to be expecting something.
I wonder how many people look at Seattle and just wonder how good they
really are. And I hate
to be that guy, but their run differential
isn't exactly off the charts.
You are a run differential guy. I'm a big run differential
guy. I think it matters. I think it matters.
He was born a run differential
guy. He'll die a run differential guy. Adnan was talking
a lot about that last time we had him on.
This one is from
sensational Gary Martell. lot about that last time we had him on uh this one is a bat this one is from sensational gary martel
is that a rick martel no rick martel wasn't sensational rick martel was he he was the model
rick martel i'm sure gary i need to know the backstory of your your self nickname uh what
we learned hashtag wbo what we learned after pascal vin Vincent's dismissal, Johnny Goudreau is about to have his 10th coach in his 10-year NHL career.
It'll also be his fourth coach since signing his seven-year deal with Columbus.
The poor bastard has only played two seasons in Columbus.
Yeah, Johnny Goudreau has had countless coaches
because they had a real revolving door in Calgary.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They were always changing coaches there.
Yeah, it's like, Bill Peters, you're in.
Oh, wait a minute, you're out. He started under Bob Harley, if I'm not mistaken. That's how far back he dates in Calgary. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They were always changing coaches there. Yeah, it was like, Bill Peters, you're in. Oh, wait a minute, you're out.
He started under Bob Harley, if I'm not mistaken.
That's how far back he dates in Calgary.
Right.
Johnny doesn't care.
It's like minor hockey.
Every year, a new coach.
Right.
He's coming up through the system.
I mean, I remain convinced that Johnny,
the coach is like, Johnny, you got to play defense.
No.
Yeah.
There's no.
See you later, coach.
There is nobody more content with how life has turned out than Johnny Gaudreau.
He's like, I play hockey, and they give me money for it.
Results don't matter.
Yeah, I kind of live close to my family,
but not close enough to where they're going to bother me.
It must suck to lose so many games, though.
Nobody likes the three hours when you're losing.
I don't even think it bothers them.
Yeah, he's like, do I still get paid at the end of it?
And they're like, yes.
He's like, right on.
Can I have a ham and cheese sandwich? They're like, also yes. Do you really care about your beer league results, bro? Like, yeah. He's like, do I still get paid at the end of it? And they're like, yes. He's like, right on. Can I have a ham and cheese sandwich?
They're like, also yes.
Do you really care about your beer league results, bro?
Like, honestly.
Well, I don't like it when we're getting...
Yeah, I do.
I do, actually.
I don't like it when we're having, like, a bad year.
Johnny Gaudreau is like a well-compensated beer leaguer.
Yeah, yeah.
And in beer league, you have the option to be like,
who are we playing tonight?
Uh, sign out.
He does that, too, just mentally. Yeah, I mentally checked out of that game. I'm on Team Snap. Oh, those guys have a lot of we playing tonight? Sign out. He does that too, just mentally.
Yeah, I mentally checked out of that game.
I'm on Team Snap.
Oh, those guys have a lot of young guys.
I'm out.
Jamie, the Armstrong fisherman.
Hashtag WWO, what we learned.
What I learned is that John Schneider used to be a catcher.
He went in and caught for Trevor Richards during warm-up
during last night's game while waiting for Alejandro Kirk to get ready.
Is this true?
Yeah, Kirk had to do like a bathroom break or something,
and it was right when the inning ended, and Jansen still had his –
he was out in the base pass, so he took some time to get another.
So John Schneider, nobody else in the dugout was moving.
So he ran and grabbed a glove.
So what did he do cup-wise?
Nothing.
And there was a wild one too, and he was just like,
I'm not getting near that.
I do.
So I went – we used to – I coached Little League. My kid graduated from Little League, but I coached. So when they get to the last too, and he was just like, I'm not getting near that. I used to coach Little League.
My kid graduated from Little League, but I coached.
So when they get to the last years, 11 and 12,
I think they can throw hard.
Like the good pitchers can throw hard.
And I used to just go and arbitrarily catch.
I like how this story's going.
The kid snapped.
He could throw a slider pretty effectively, and it broke.
And he threw it hard, and it hit me square on the ankle
because it broke so hard with no bounce.
Your ankle or the ball?
No, no, no.
There was no break.
I was like, I'm going to throw up.
It hurts so bad.
I was like, I'm going to throw up in front of this kid.
He's like, are you okay?
And I'm like, I'm fine.
Imagine getting beamed by like a 95-mile-an-hour pitch.
As a baseball coach coaching children,
did you ever get hit by a bat by a kid who was just like swinging
and not paying attention?
No.
I've seen that happen at least three times.
Like a cat just, or not a cat, a bat, a child just, you know,
you know how they go up to bat and they're so nervous
that they're just like the only focus is on what they're doing.
Yep.
And then some parent will be like,
take a few warm-up swings because they're just frozen at the plate.
I've seen some coaches get it.
A little too close.
Yeah.
You've got to be careful.
It never happened to me.
I know it does happen.
Kids will, when they're first learning baseball, they're not, they don't have the spatial awareness.
They'll just swing a bat anywhere in the dugout, next to your car.
See a bat?
They're going to swing it.
They will swing that bat anywhere.
It doesn't matter.
They don't understand like how wide the.
No spatial awareness.
None whatsoever.
Right.
And yeah, they'll hit other kids, random objects.
They'll turn quickly with it on their shoulder
and just smoke you in the face.
Like the rules about having bats in the dugout,
it's the biggest one because you know chaos is about to ensue
if a kid has a bat in his hands in the dugout.
Nick on the drive, not with a What We Learn,
but he wanted to text this in anyway.
I know people lose whenever you talk about anything but Canucks,
but I appreciate the variety of topics and sports personalities you introduced me to.
Daniel Nestor just seems like a great guy and Canadian athlete.
Yeah, that was a great interview.
Really good.
We did with Daniel Nestor.
Thank you, Nick.
Thank you, Nick, on the drive.
I'm actually surprised and impressed by the listeners this offseason compared to the previous
one.
They're a lot more understanding and respectful.
I think I know why. Respectful of the sports that we cover outside of the canucks i think i know why why it's because
uh they're afraid you're gonna yell at them no no yeah they're gonna take the show away um
the canucks satiated a lot of people they appeased a lot of people this year there was
there's not that lingering animosity that you wasted so much time watching and talking about a horrible team.
A lot of people are like, yeah, I feel good about the way things ended.
And they were happy to, you know, the season ended.
Everyone got to watch a lot of hockey and the guys played a lot of hockey.
It went far.
We didn't have to start doing like draft previews in April.
Like it was great.
And then the season ended and everyone's like, okay, I can, I think I'm okay.
Taking a little bit of time away.
Now let's hope the Oilers lose.
Right.
And then there's that, the schadenfreude of it all.
Three putt Shane.
What we learned, I just learned I'd rather hear about the cap numbers of the Columbus
Blue Jackets rather than any basketball.
My God, what has happened to me?
Hurry up Seahawks.
So that wasn't a shot at basketball overall I think that was just
a shot at the NBA season it was bad overall there's no question it was not a good season
to recap I wonder if the league recognizes that and if there's I don't suppose there's anything
they can really do about it I mean sometimes, sometimes you have good seasons, sometimes you have bad seasons. But, you know, we always talk about NHL
and how we wish there was more player movement.
Like more player movement, more player movement.
Makes it more interesting.
Gives us something to talk about in the offseason
and it provides narratives for the regular season
and the playoffs.
Like Kyrie Irving going to Boston
should have been a good story,
but it just completely fell flat. Is there too much movement in the playoffs. Like Kyrie Irving going to Boston should have been a good story, but it just completely fell flat.
Is there too much movement in the NBA
where guys aren't together long enough
to fail, then come back
and overcome what they came before?
Yeah, I mean, the Celtics did.
Celtics have been together.
Celtics have been together for five or six years.
That's true.
That's a lifetime now, five or six years. I'll yeah, yeah. That's true. That's a lifetime now. That's true.
Five or six years.
I'll just say this.
It's really hard to anoint something the worst ever.
This is the least competitive of all time.
Because for the youths out there, the kids that don't know,
go back and look at some of those Lakers series in the early 2000s.
The Lakers-Nets NBA final was one of the worst things i've ever seen
it wasn't even like it was almost an exhibition series because everyone knew that kobe and shack
were winning now the inverse of that conversation is well that was pure greatness because the kobe
shack duo was an all-timer so even though they blew the doors off the nets you still got to see
greatness well one you might be seeing that with tatum and brown
i guess history will sort of define that but this postseason i mean and we were trying to sell it
tatum and brown have um like are they household names tatum is now i bet even brown won the mvp
they but do you know what i mean okay okay in terms of faces of the NBA
yeah
are they?
nobody is right now
the NBA's got a little bit of a void right
just a little bit
there are guys that are waiting to grab the mantle
but everyone's sort of waiting to see what happens
because right now
you look at the NBA playoffs
and who didn't play a major role?
LeBron
Kevin Durant, Steph Curry.
Feel free to yell at me if I'm off on this because I'm not the most
hardcore NBA fan, but, you know, I'm like, isn't that Matthew Kachuk's buddy?
Jason Taylor.
I realize he's a great player.
And I realize that the Celtics had a number of years
where they could have won it, but they didn't.
And they overcame it this year.
And they were by far the best team in the NBA
regular season and playoffs.
Yeah, they got a few breaks along the way,
but they're probably going to win it anyway.
But I just...
What about Wemba Nyama?
Is he going to be the face?
But do people like...
Well, you want...
Okay.
Do they discuss Tatum and Brown?
Are they constant topics on PTI or whatever down south?
I'll say this.
The next guys in terms of superstardom...
I don't know the answer to the question.
The next guys in terms of superstardom
and the ability to win multiple MVPs in championships
are probably, in no particular order.
Jokic, Giannis, Luka, who was in his first final,
and then Andy brings up Wemby.
What do all those guys have in common?
They're all European.
Yeah.
Right?
It's just a different dynamic with the league.
They're all pretty tall.
They're all tall.
They all play basketball.
They're all European.
Right? There is a changing of the guard. The guys that pretty tall. They're all tall. They all play basketball. They're all European, right?
There is a changing of the guard.
Like the guys that I mentioned previously, LeBron.
Is that good for the NBA or bad for the NBA?
I'm sure the global reach is,
they're probably like over the moon
at how global the game has become.
It's just a different sort of marketability.
Like the marketability of Jokic is that
I don't even know if he really likes basketball.
Sports is more than basketball, right?
You got Luka.
And then some people are like, I get them confused sometimes.
Right.
So it's just really, it's an interesting dynamic.
What about Luka?
What were we going to say about Luka?
When you got Luka and he's...
Luka's just a different animal altogether.
I mean, physically, there's people that are saying he needs to lose weight and get in better shape
if he's going to handle the rigors of playing proper defense and taking that next step in the elevation like
he's a guy that likes to have a beer and a glass of wine he's it's just different right um and then
after he has a beer and a glass of wine he's like i'm gonna have another beer and then another glass
of wine and then i will have dessert and maybe a dart he's like that guy like i should be allowed
to have three beers if i want six beers yeah what's
wrong with six beer the first vaping the mvp the v stands for vaping no this is all i'm just
throwing this out there anyway well someone texted in geez for 70 million plus a year jalen brown
better be a household name i don't know if he is household name yes i think a lot of nba every
nba fan yes but like but what he's talking about i'm just i'm gonna put words in your mouth what Household name, yes. I think a lot of NBA, every NBA fan knows. NBA fans.
But what he's talking about, I'm going to put words in your mouth.
What you're talking about is the superstar iconic player.
Everyone knows who LeBron is.
Everyone knows who KD is.
If you're a first name guy.
Steph.
Steph.
KD.
LeBron.
Jalen.
Brunson?
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
Oh, I know exactly what you're saying.
Yeah.
He's a rich man now.
You know 90% of our listeners all went Chatfield.
Chatfield?
You're talking about Jalen Chatfield, right?
Is he coming back?
No, he re-signed in Carolina.
Speaking of Carolina, they made their general manager announcement today
confirming that it will be Eric Tulsky,
who's going to be taking over from Don Waddell
and will be the general manager now moving forward.
And the team posted his LinkedIn page
where it shows off his 27 patents that he has as a biochemist.
Yeah, but who do you play for?
Yeah, that's right.
200 hockey men can't be wrong.
27 patents.
How many NHLers have patents to their name?
What did he patent?
Different.
It's hard to describe.
I can pull up the names of the things.
Longer lasting gum.
Things like that.
No, they're all very scientific sounding things.
More adhesive tape.
Scientific sounding things.
Conjugates of biomolecules to nanoparticles.
Electrolyte separators.
Brough loves throwing people in the spotlight.
Shoes with springs on the bottom. You can tell. Including lithium borohyd. Electrolyte separators. Brough loves throwing people on the spot like this.
You can tell.
Including lithium borohydride
and composite electrolyte
separators of lithium
stuffed garnet
and lithium borohydride.
Oh yeah, what's that?
What's that?
They're all patents
that he's got.
They're probably like
reading his resume like,
man, he sounds smart.
Let's hire this guy.
Can you imagine
he came up with
all those patents
and now it's like,
I need to find
a right shot defenseman.
Well, he's an expert on team chemistry you guys it's it's too bad this job pays better than all that other stuff i must now do some pithy work trying to re-sign jalen chad yeah we're just we
need some more grit i can't understand the cap it's too hard we're gonna go out with this one

Signing off for another exciting show, I have been Mike Alford.
He has been Jason Brough.
He's been A-Dog.
And he's been Laddie.
This has been the Alfred and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
