What up, AJ?
Well, hey, first off, happy new year.
Happy new year, bud.
Happy new year, bud.
No, I feel like I haven't spoken to you guys.
I'm allowed to do that, right?
We're in the window.
We're in the window.
We are firmly in the window.
We're in the window. We're in the window. We are firmly in the window. We're in the window. So I was texting with Mike last night, and as the years comes to an end,
you reflect on different things that have happened,
and whether it's business or personal.
So I just wanted to give you guys a gigantic shout-out
on how amazing this sponsorship partnership has been it's been great man
it's been great and and and it has been like honestly the amount of the community you guys
have built and and the listeners you know some of them a little salty abrupt rough don't take
that personal i tell them in personal i tell them in person he's a really great guy. Eat your pizza and stop complaining.
Right, right.
I listen to them.
I listen to them.
I'm like a therapist.
But the amount of people who come in to AJ's and have come in over the course of the last year has been amazing.
And I just wanted to give you guys that shout out.
It's proper.
A-Dawg, you might be the most beloved person on the show really people love
a dog ajs yeah yeah they do they do if you ever want to run for mayor you let me be your campaign
manager the mayor of pizza town yeah i would run this city into the ground no no you let me run
behind the scenes okay sure the nice guy sure. He's a nice guy.
Nice guy mispronounces a lot of words, though.
I wanted to give you guys a big shout out for that. So, yeah.
And that was what my wife and I
learned, that this has been an amazing year. We can't
wait for what's going to come in 225.
We echo the sentiment, man. Like, I
love coming by and hanging out, and it's always
cool. I feel like every time I come in, there's at least one
Halbro listener. Usually, it's the guy sweating while he's eating. That's usually cool. I feel like every time I come in, there's at least one Halbro listener.
Usually it's the guy sweating while he's eating.
That's usually our listenership, right?
And I'm like, okay, that guy knows us.
We know him.
Eating himself out of breath.
Yeah, right.
But I love it, man.
It's been awesome working with you guys.
And then, hey, so funny note.
So my wife and I, as some people, many people, people well people who listen to the show know she turned
40 in october we're going to denver to go watch the broncos in kc i heard this her so her lovely
family dougie big shout out to my brother-in-law um he arranged bought us our whole trip tickets
and they have a they have a friend who works for the organization.
We're running the Denver flag onto the field.
Seriously?
What?
That's amazing.
I know.
Yeah, it's crazy.
It's crazy.
I don't know how they let me on the field, to be honest.
Can you put in a request to ride a Bronco onto the field
and then put the flag down?
That's amazing.
That's a really cool experience, though.
That's going to be awesome.
It is going to be a great experience.
It's going to be awesome.
It's super fun.
I'm happy for my wife.
She's never been to an NFL game,
so here we go.
That'll be very cool.
I know you want Bruff to run AJ's
while you guys are absent, right?
I do, Bruff.
If you could come by
and just be the maitre d'
and the host at the stand,
that would be...
I cannot imagine a worse job
for me just like hey stand there and be friendly and talk to everyone there's a really angry guy
in the corner over there can we get a seat for two you could i guess go find one
so what do you you guys take off soon for denver yeah? We leave today. We leave today.
And then we head to Florida from Denver for the opening.
AJ's.
Okay, well, rest assured, everyone listening right now,
AJ's is still fully functional this weekend,
even though AJ and Teresa aren't there.
And Jason probably won't be the maitre d'.
So swing on by.
Reminder, it's happy hour all day on Sunday.
Tons of NFL.
It's week 18.
Have fun in Denver, man.
That's going to be a very cool game.
It's obviously a must win for the Broncos to get into the playoffs.
And again, I appreciate the sentiments from earlier.
We love working with you guys and very much looking forward to it this year in 2025.
Yeah, absolutely.
You guys have a wonderful weekend.
You too.
Thanks, buddy.
That's AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
Go check him out.
325 East Broadway this weekend.
Jason will be working the door, taking coats, taking orders.
What you want, hon?
That's Jason as your waiter.
They're all the Pedersen fans, aren't they,
that go in there and complain about me?
Not that many complain about you.
Well, it seems to be a problem.
No, I mean.
Miller fans love him, though.
Very polarized pizza fan base there.
I went in last weekend.
We watched the Rams-Cardinals game.
Yeah.
Hopefully the Seahawks season stays alive here and doesn't.
As soon as I walked in, some guy was like,
what's up, Halford?
Love the show, man.
Fist bump across the table.
I think every time I go in there,
there's at least one Halford and Brough listener.
Nice.
Yeah, it's pretty great.
Okay, we got an open segment.
But what about me?
They're like, is Brough here?
And I said, no, he's not here.
And they're like, okay, cool.
Good. Yeah. Okay, no, he's not here. And they're like, okay, cool. Good.
Yeah.
Okay, we got an open segment here.
Quick reset.
After talking to AJ from AJ's Pizza,
we are giving away a $100 gift card to AJ's for the best.
Ask us anything or what we learned on today's show.
Send them in.
Dunbar Lumber Tax Line is 650-650.
What we learned is obviously what did you learn
over the last 24 hours in sports?
Hashtag it WWL.
Ask us anything.
Again, the name speaks for itself.
AUA.
Ask us anything.
You can ask us literally anything.
Dunbar Lumber text line is 650-650.
Hashtag those AUA.
Mike from Thunder Bay.
Ask us anything.
Is it time to consider acquiring via trade or draft another elite goaltender
and possibly carry three with Lankanen as number one.
As much as Demko is a concern,
and by the way, in case you're just joining us,
it wasn't his knee that led him to leave the game last night.
It was a back spasm.
No popliteus spasm.
It was a backliteus.
Yeah, it was his backliteus.
We were joking earlier in the show.
Don't worry, everyone.
It wasn't his knee.
He's got a bad back.
He's got a crippling back injury.
Yeah, don't worry about it.
Those clear up real easy.
That's fine.
I don't think that's like a front burner issue for the Canucks.
Like maybe they'll draft a goalie.
I don't know.
I just don't think it's a front burner issue for them right now.
Sorry, you said trade for a goalie, not draft a goalie, right? Well, he don't think it's a front burner issue for them right now sorry i said trade for a goalie not draft a goalie right well he said via trade or draft another elite
goaltender but i mean one on the pile i don't know like i don't think you're gonna trade for an elite
goaltender if you want to try and draft one go ahead yeah um i think they need a defenseman more
yeah like there's just they've got like that's back burner stuff. It might come to the forefront later on,
and they do have a decision to make on Thatcher Demko at some point
because they could re-sign him to extension this offseason,
but they could also wait on that and see how his health is.
They could try and get Lankanen re-signed,
but it's not going to be cheap.
So, again, I don't think it's a front-burner issue.
But just on this subject, remember what you said prior to Thatcher Demko
returning from the Popliteus injury?
You spoke at length about that dynamic of how long is it going to be
or how many times are we going to sit there and kind of gripping the armrests
of our couches and taking the big, deep gulp when he was either slow to get up after a save or got hurt.
Last night was the perfect example because when it happened,
it was like,
Oh my God,
my phone went crazy.
And it was just like,
Oh,
expletive.
Oh,
there was tons of them across the board.
And even shorty on the broadcast,
he went,
Oh boy.
Oh boy.
That's your Demco's going down the tunnel
right it was that instant reaction of oh crap and after the game it was on the old crap was
somewhat unfounded because it wasn't a re-aggravation of the poplatius injury according to rick talk it
it was back spasms but that's that dynamic that's out there. And last night was the first real example
where we got the, oh my God, he's hurt again kind of thing.
Hopefully it's just a minor thing.
And as Toggett said, maybe one to two days
and it clears itself up.
Josh from Nanaimo, ask us anything.
Do you guys ever switch to another game
if the game, I imagine he means the Canucks game,
isn't very good?
Or do you tough it out because it's kind of your job?
Last night, I did do the flipping back and forth.
What else were you watching?
Anything.
It wasn't a great...
A rerun of Bones.
Yeah.
What was this, an infomercial for a slap chop?
Shopping channel.
Yeah.
I'm not gonna lie the first maybe half of that game yes it did sort of pick up in the second period but it was not
an oil painting and some of them have not been oil paintings for the canucks the new year's eve game
against calgary even with all the fisticuffs uh was still a tough watch at times because they just
don't generate a lot of chances. I understand the investment,
especially from an employment standpoint.
Like, hey, you should probably pay attention to this
given you have to talk about it.
But there will be times where I'll be like a kid
with attention deficit disorder and I'll just be...
Well, there's so many options too, man,
especially with the ability to watch any NHL game.
Yeah, and there was a lot going on last night.
What happened in that Buffalo-Colorado game last night?
So Buffalo looked as though...
It was a wild one.
Buffalo looked as though they had salted that one away.
Jason Zucker scored late in the third period
to finish his hat trick and give him a 5-3 lead.
The Avalanche scored twice late,
then won it in overtime.
That's actually the second time that that's happened this year.
The Avs earlier this season had an even bigger comeback.
They were down 4-0 against Buffalo and came back and won 5-4.
That was back in December 3rd in Buffalo.
That game was also, I guess, highlighted is the only word I can think of in the moment,
highlighted by Zach Benson taking out Scott Wedgwood.
Not intentionally, but he backed into him.
Wedgwood kind of bent over on his, like went down right away in pain.
My boy.
And then nobody, there was a whistle blown.
The play didn't stop.
So Benson just kind of tucked the puck in the net, in the empty net,
as Wedgwood was falling.
He's like, ah, my poplatius.
I don't know if it was poplatius, but anyway.
Savers get a 4-2 lead on that goal.
Avs go crazy.
They're trying to jump Benson and everything.
Wedgwood actually had to lead the game.
Bednar was furious after the game.
I thought it was some pretty bad refereeing.
His hair was everywhere.
I think it was noted referee TJ Luxmore doing the game,
which is also a Don Taylor bit, but named for a good bar, TJ Luxmore's.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
It sounds like a bad Vegas hotel. Where are you staying?
TJ Luxmore.
Couldn't get in anywhere good. Staying at the Luxmore.
They don't
have any beds. You got to sleep on the floor. Yeah, right.
So Wedgwood hurt. That was a wild
game. There was a bunch of stories from
last night across the NHL, which was a reason why
I was flipping away from the Canucks game because
there's a lot of other games to watch last night. Adam, the former
bath guy, asked us anything.
What's a New Year's resolution you regularly make but can never keep?
It is my New Year's resolution this year, in fact, and that is to eat better.
Actually, yeah, that's one.
I never keep it.
Yeah.
I'll lose it within a day.
I'll be like, is that ice cream?
Yeah. So my latest is trying to have more of a,
I don't even know if I'm pronouncing this right,
low glycemic diet.
Do you know what that is?
Less sugar?
Less sugar, right?
So it has-
Sounds awful.
A low glycemic, low GI, as they say in the diet biz.
You eat foods that have a more minimal impact on blood sugar levels.
Right.
Because I find that I go up and down.
And I don't know if you've ever noticed, but sometimes I can get a bit moody.
Not you.
Yeah. And that's why I'm just a terrible-
And you blame it on the glycemic foods?
I'm trying to blame it on my diet.
Sounds like you got to eat a lot of barley. So I went into chat GPT and I said, what might a low glycemic diet look like for a day?
And this is where I always get depressed.
It's like breakfast.
Scrambled eggs with spinach and a slice of whole grain toast.
Half an avocado or a handful of cherry
tomatoes who's eating cherry tomatoes for breakfast english and then like no but they fry them at
stew them the and then and then this is what really gets me a morning snack a small handful
of almonds or walnuts and a piece of fresh fruit like an apple pear and then an afternoon
and after here's an afternoon snack greek yogurt with a sprinkle of chia seeds or ground flax seeds
you gotta make sure it's on the farm animal diet yeah you gotta make sure some people eat like this
right time they some people eat like this and and i guess i hope it gets easier but
i i don't i i'm like i do we have chia seeds like i don't am i saying that right is it kia seeds i
don't even know right like i have not isn't a chia the thing that you pour water on
which is confusing because it does have seeds but i get where you're going with this yeah
and then you know like dinner is like grilled salmon or baked tofu with roasted vegetables
and aside a small serving of sweet potato or wild rice.
I hate sweet potatoes.
They are disgusting.
What about yams?
Yeah, I hate yams.
Not doing this again.
Oh, not doing this again.
Okay.
Well, it's a good like idea because i understand
like especially someone that's maybe prone to the highs and lows of life that you want to try and
balance out your sugar intake um yeah like it's funny there was one uh one of the ones that showed
up on instagram the guy was all about like eating single ingredient nutrient rich foods and then
he would show what he ate and his dinner would just be like a bowl of ground beef yeah and he's
like and he's like it's one ingredient i'm like it sure is but that's you're that's really sad
yeah and like there there are some people out there though that don't take a ton of enjoyment
from eating food they see it purely as like i've got a buddy that said like if i had the option i would just and you could just take a pill like i would
skip all meals right and just take a pill right your problem like mine as well as like i enjoy
you like certain foods right yeah and i enjoy all the bad stuff yeah there's a certain like
guilty pleasure factor that turns to just guilt afterwards, right? It starts out being- I don't think it's a coincidence that our most successful advertising sponsorship partnership
is with AJ's Pizza.
Right.
It's good.
Low carb.
It's low glycemic.
Yeah, low glycemic, low carb.
There's a lot of chia seeds on the pizza.
It's very good for you.
Can I have one of your chia seed pizzas, please?
Can I have the sweet potato pizza?
Put a little barley on top.
AJ's just throwing you out. I know there's going to be someone that texts in, I love sweet potatoes. I'm a little barley on top. AJ just throwing you out.
I know there's going to be someone that texts in,
I love sweet potatoes.
I'm like, good for you.
Go eat them.
No, there are people.
Chia seed Twitter is going to be adding bruh all day.
First it's Pettersson, and now it's the chia seeds, huh?
Great.
We are in the middle of Ask Us Anything.
So reminder, get them in.
AUA is the hashtag for Ask Us Anything.
WWL is the hashtag for what we learned.
Dunbar Lumber Text Line is $6.50.
$6.50. It's your chance to win
a $100 gift card to AJ's Pizza
on East Broadway. I got one here from Austin and Langley.
Hashtag AUA. With the island
of misfit toys that is the Vancouver Canucks
defense, how would you play,
utilize, deploy them? Are you pro
Brandstrom in the lineup? He seems to be the
only guy that can move the puck. I think the power
play needed him too.
Again, when I saw that Breezeball was coming in yesterday
and he was coming in for Brandstrom,
my first response was,
well, that's going to go over great with the fan base.
And sure enough, the fan base held up their end of the bargain
by freaking out on social media.
What did the Canucks do?
They went out, and while it wasn't pretty,
and at the end, it was kind of scrambly,
they got two points out of Seattle.
The coaching staff doesn't like Brandstrom, Austin.
I think that's one thing that's abundantly clear, that whatever the metrics say, or whatever your eye test says, or whatever people like about him,
Talkett and Foote, I think specifically, either don't see see it or see it and don't think that that
juice is worth the squeeze which is I guess is having a sort of undersized guy in the lineup
that doesn't defend very well yeah I think they just I just think they just have a plan for how
they want to play especially without Hughes and Pedersen and Hronik and it's probably a really
simple game and Branstrom does not really play a simple game. He plays a roving style of game.
And I get the people that sit there and say,
well, you need puck moving.
You don't have Quinn Hughes,
and now you're going to take Branstrom out of the lineup?
Branstrom was the most obvious replacement for Quinn Hughes,
and I would probably think that way as well.
But the Canucks have a plan for,
I'd actually be curious, and I heard Landon Ferrara a plan for, I'd actually be curious,
and I heard Landon Ferrara talking about this,
I'd actually be curious to know
if they've had direction on how to change,
are they changing the way they play?
The blue line?
No, everyone.
Just everyone.
Like, are they saying, you know, Landon was suggesting
that maybe you just blow,
like you have a few forwards blowing the zone because you know that the defensemen are going to go high off the glass anyway.
So, like, don't even try and make a pass.
Just, like, just get it out.
Sure.
And then hopefully you have some forwards moving north at least that can skate on to the puck
or give the opposition at least a little bit of a tough of a time.
But I think that's what they're doing I think they're going with guys that will play a simple game but the problem is is that even when you simplify the game some of these guys
are still making pretty loud mistakes out there like Susie just looks so out of sorts, man. Soucy is French for loud mistake.
But that hasn't been the case for him,
and he's just getting,
it's not even like,
although there have been a few giveaways
with the puck,
it's getting beaten clean a couple of,
like, players are getting behind him.
If you're playing a simple game,
you can't let that sort of stuff happen.
Can I just say, by the way,
last night, one of the greatest things of the season happened and that was vincent deharnais going out three on three
that was awesome because he was he was in a very similar position to tyler myers yeah and he made
the cross-ice pass i'm like yelling at the team like don't do it he made it i also thought he had
a great it was a great pass to DeBrus.
DeBrus almost scored on that.
He had to skate backwards at one point.
He did.
He nearly,
he nearly toppled right over.
You might want to work on that.
That might be a thing.
But I was like,
it was almost like,
you know,
you put like someone in a,
in a new,
maybe uncomfortable position.
And they'll either be really tentative with it, or they'll just be like, you know what? I'm out here, man. Like, I don't know how many other cracks I'm going to get at this. And they'll either be really tentative with it
or they'll just be like, you know what?
I'm out here, man.
Like, I don't know how many other cracks
I'm going to get at this.
And he did it.
He made a nice foray into the O zone,
did the button hook, didn't do the Myers.
I'm going to pass it between two teammates
instead of to one of my teammates.
It's good.
How about Myers on the power play?
The Kraken were playing it a little different
than they would have if Quinn Hughes was up there.
They gave him all the space in the world,
and he just walked right in and blasted a shot right at Grubauer.
I don't know if that was how Seattle had that.
I don't think it was intentional.
I thought he could have made a last-minute pass to JT for the one-timer,
but I don't know.
That would be hard to pass up.
You're walking into the slot.
Hey, hit it as hard as you can.
Okay.
Honestly, though, I'm much more of a fan of the direct play in that instance.
And as we kind of go full circle here,
one of the things that drove me nuts about watching Canada play the Czechs
yesterday was the overpassing, the passing making too many passes they couldn't
complete the passes yeah they just it felt like they were trying felt like they were trying every
single thing without having any direction on because here's the thing man someday talk it
talks about this sometimes being deliberate and being predictable is a very good thing
because everyone knows what to do and where the puck's going to go.
Right. Yeah. When you're trying everything, it really makes things difficult for your teammates.
Especially guys you haven't played with. Yeah.
Well, I thought we were supposed to do this when we got into this situation.
I thought we were supposed to do that when we got into that situation.
Anyway, we're up against it for time. We're going to come back.
We're going to talk to the Moj on the other side of the break.

Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
What up, Moj?
Shitting in the dark in Burnaby, according to the BC Hydro Power Outage Map.
There's three areas in BC that have power outages right now, and I'm in one of them.
And the worst thing is, I'm sick, wanted to get a good night's sleep, wake up, do the
hit.
Now, I wake up at 4.13 because the fire alarms, the fire smoke sensors kind of beep in.
The emergency generators, which sound like the USA Army have kicked in below us for emergency
lighting and stuff.
So I've basically been up since 4.
You said sitting, right up since four you said
sitting right yeah you said sitting okay i said what never mind it sounded different
sounded a little different i was like what is that where you're starting with yeah i'm like i
get it yeah okay i'm glad that in the dark i'm sorry you're having a tough morning but i'm glad
that you're yeah you're powering through that's a clever pun to talk to alfred and brough in the dark. I'm sorry you're having a tough morning, but I'm glad that you're powering through, that's a clever pun,
to talk to Halford and Brough in the morning.
So, we
kind of set off the show this morning talking about
the latest with Thatcher Demko. Big sigh
of relief for the organization because
Rick Talkin said after the game yesterday,
him leaving Seattle, him leaving the
Seattle game yesterday wasn't because of a
re-aggravation of the Popliteus.
It was back spasms.
Brough already joked, he's like, oh good good it's only a back problem but anyway we'll move past that uh
the canucks are right back in action tonight i assume that it's going to be lankan and back in
again tonight unless something dramatic changes uh lankan it could be facing a pretty heavy
workload coming up here yeah and you know the one thing too like you know they're talking about
flying in she lots maybe and i, they're talking about flying in
Shelops maybe, and I guess they're in Laval,
but I mean, what are you going to do?
Take, like, an all-nighter?
Take a red-eye and get into Vancouver?
I don't think that's going to happen.
The thing that concerns me a little bit about Lankanen,
you'd like to see Demko get back as soon as possible.
This is kind of uncharted waters for Lankanen
in terms of workload.
I was looking it up last i think his high in any
season was 42 games with hifk helsinki a few years back when he's playing in finland so
you know 42 games isn't exactly like a guy going 50 or 60 games so it's going to be interesting
to see how he responds to that workload if it is increased moving forward.
So to me, I don't know if I want to find that out.
I'd rather just have Demko back.
And, you know, even if Demko, I'm not saying he can go out there
and do what he's done in the past in terms of workload,
but if you can have a 1A and 1B type goaltending situation
for the rest of the year, I think that'll bode well for the Canucks.
But that's something to watch for is just to see how Lankanen will handle this
extended workload this year.
Lankanen has never played more than 37 NHL games, and you're right.
It was a career-high 42 in the Finnish League a few years ago now, too.
Hey, did you watch the Sugar Bowl yesterday?
Yeah.
Man, the NCAA football system.
The NCAA is broken when it comes to football it really is yep um you know first off you got this whole transfer portal thing i mean notre dame they're
saying i like i think six or eight players that came in through the portal the guy that ran the
kickoff back for the touchdown to start the second half was a portable guy. I just don't even recognize college football anymore.
It's just, it's becoming so polarized.
And, you know, what about the schools that develop these kids for whatever,
two, three years, and they wind up losing them through the portal.
Look at the Washington State quarterback who everybody was really high on.
He's gone, right?
So, you know, these smaller schools,
how do you develop your programs when you constantly
lose players marshall was supposed to go to a bowl game this year they had to pull out because 26 of
their players left through the portal yeah i mean it's it's ridiculous right i mean it's just
it's the wild west and it's all about money whether it's the players whether it's the team
you know so many people for so many years, oh, we have to have a call.
Oh, we need a playoff system.
It can't be four.
It's got to be eight.
It's got to be 12.
So what are the 12-team playoff?
How many competitive games have we seen thus far?
One.
One, yeah.
One game.
It's been bad.
One single-score game in all of those games.
And here's the thing about football at the college level. At the pros,
the gap between
the top and the bottom
isn't that great.
It's not that far,
the floor from the ceiling,
so to speak.
In college football,
it's totally different.
In college football,
you might have a great record
because you're not playing
that hard of a schedule,
but the gap in college football say if alabama was to play alcorn state 100 times alabama probably
went 99 times you can't say that about pro teams right and as a result there's also like a
polarization in terms of how heavy these top teams are so you don't need 12 teams to find out who
your champion is.
You could probably go with four.
You could probably go with eight.
But again, it's about the money.
And here's the other thing, too, about the playoff system.
It just ruins all the bowl games.
The bowl games now have, especially the smaller bowls
that aren't part of the playoff system, they have no cachet.
And luckily this year you actually kind of saw
like an old-school Pac-12 matchup in the Rose Bowl.
But do you really want to see LSU play Texas in the Rose Bowl in a playoff game?
No.
I mean, like I said, it's just everything is just the Wild West when it comes to the NCAA.
What do you think of the name image likeness revolution happening in college sports because on the one hand um you know it
brings money more into college sports i mean we all know it was in there before but now
for the players but on the other hand you know it was in in a lot of ways fair enough for the
players to be asked to be compensated beyond the scholarships given what
some of the star players brought into those programs well i agree with that and i think a
way around it would have been to increase the stipends with the scholarships right i mean
what did we hear all the time oh these guys can't work during the off season they can't have extra
income well make theirs you know the scholarship took care of what books tuition hear all the time? Oh, these guys can't work during the offseason. They can't have extra income. Well, make their scholarship take care of what?
Books, tuition, food, all of that stuff.
Throw in another $30,000 or $40,000, right?
I mean, to all the players, $40,000, $50,000, whatever the case may be,
whatever number made sense.
But you're telling me now you've got players that are making $2 million?
There's players in college that are making more money than their counterparts in the NFL.
And I'm talking about certain quarterbacks.
What did Caleb Williams make last year?
Right?
At SC, he made like $2 million.
He made more than Prescott, I heard.
Then, you know, you've got this kid, Sanders, at Colorado.
He's making a boatload on now.
Probably making more than half the NFL starters.
It's crazy, right?
It's just gone completely.
Yeah, they needed to be compensated more,
but the way the needle has moved, it's just nuts.
Yeah, I mean, I think you put it right when you said it's the Wild West right now.
They instituted it with kind of like no oversight.
It was like, all right, do it.
I mean, the reason why you have
that discrepancy between college and some of the pros is because you have a CBA governing NFL
salaries, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that in college sports unless I'm mistaken.
So you do have this wild west and you've got players constantly entering the portal.
And yeah, it's almost like you see teams like, we're going to load up now for next year because we think this is the year.
And they're loading up through the portal at the expense of some programs that are getting absolutely decimated.
So do you think they can fix this?
Well, one of the things that I've heard is that they're hopefully going to put a cap in place
in terms of how much money you can spend with NILS.
So I think that's a start.
But, you know, like the real concern for me is these schools that just become feeder systems, right?
And again, what are you going to have?
Like, you're going to have your big four conferences
and everybody else just being a feeder?
So I don't know.
It's just, to me, like I said, you nailed it.
I mean, it's the Wild West.
It's just, it's crazy right now.
But I think if they want to get it under control,
I think you do what, well, what the NFL has done, what the NHL has done,
and that is have some sort of salary cap.
We're speaking to Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the Halford & Brough show
on Sportsnet 650.
Moj is a presentation of the West Coast Auto Group.
Great service, great selection just over the bridge in Maple Ridge.
Moj, Canadian Football League, BC Lions. They rounded out their coaching staff
this week. Thoughts on the additions
to Buck Pierce's staff?
Yeah, interesting.
Some guys with local connections, of course
Randy Melvin comes back. I think he's an
outstanding defensive line coach. He's
worked in the NFL. I mean, he worked with Belichick
in New England. Great
technician, so to speak.
So I think that's a great hire.
They also get Glenn Young out of Toronto,
former defensive coordinator for the Argos.
So, again, a guy with experience.
It's going to be interesting to see how Ryan Phillips adapts
to being the secondary coach and the passing game coordinator.
I know he has a really good relationship with Mike Benavides,
but, you know, clearly it's a demotion.
And, you know, it's funny because you always ask your players
to do what's best for the team, check their ego at the door, right?
Well, of course, now that's being asked of Ryan Phillips as a coach,
and I'm sure Ryan will be up to the task.
I think he's, you know, a solid secondary coach,
and, you know, clearly they didn't have the results that they wanted on defense
the last couple of years.
But there's also things that come into play in this.
One of the things that kind of drove me nuts,
and I know this will change this year.
When the Lions practiced, they never ran scout team.
There are some teams in the CFL that do this.
They run their offense versus their defense,
basically their ones versus their ones.
So say the Lions are playing Winnipeg,
Ryan Phillips, in his defense,
his guys never really got to see what Winnipeg ran in offense,
what Winnipeg ran offensively with the Lions offense.
They did during their
walkthrough period on defense but it's different doing a walkthrough and it's different doing it
in practice and of course it's different in a game there's three different speed levels there
and to his defense um I think it was wrong I mean you've got to be able to see what the other teams
running during the course of the week and the the Lions, like I said, they did this ones versus ones thing.
So, hey, the Lions defense had a great book and a great read
on what the Lions did offensively, but they didn't in terms of their opponents.
So I think this year that will change.
I know it's going to change, and it's going to be interesting
to see if the defense can improve because of it.
Week 18, the final week of the NFL season this weekend,
which means we're getting closer and closer to the Super Bowl.
Can you give us an update on what's going on with Moj, Super Bowl, Super Bowl, Radio Row?
What's going on?
Northwest Tankline Super Bowl show will be heard on Sportsnet 650
during the course of the week on non-connect game night.
So happy to team up with 6.50 again.
And all the, well, not all,
but most of the big videos,
the big stars that we will have
in the video interviews
are going to be posted
on the Donnie and Dolly YouTube page.
So it's going to be all covered
through Sportsnet 6.50
and Donnie and Dolly's YouTube page.
So looking forward to it.
All right, Moj, that's great to hear.
Great for the station, great for you,
and hope you have a great time down in New Orleans.
Tim from South Surrey has an Ask Us Anything for you.
The best part of the show right here, Ask Me Anything.
Yep, here we go.
Okay, you travel a lot, Moj.
You've been on a lot of flights.
You've been to a lot of airports.
Tim wants to know,
what's the best bite
of airport food
you have ever had and where
was it? Okay, first
off, if you're ever at O'Hare,
you got to go to Vienna's Hot Dogs
and you get a Chicago dog. I love
how quickly you answered this. He's right.
Yeah, he's right. So O'Hare
and Chicago, what's it called? Vienna's.
Okay. Halford, you done it? Yeah, Vienna's, they're like aHare and Chicago, what's it called? Vienna's. Okay. Alfred, you done it?
Yeah.
Vienna's, they're like a fine purveyor of hot dogs and other sort of cased meats.
That's a slam dunk right there.
To me, it's like every time I go to O'Hare, as soon as I get off the plane, boom.
Or before the flight leaves, I go to Vienna's, grab a Chicago dog.
I don't know.
The beef is really good.
And just like all those condiments, celery salt. Oh, it's Chicago dog. I don't know. Like, their beef is really good. And just, like, all those condiments, the celery salt.
Oh, it's so good.
How do you load your dog?
Well, I don't.
They make it for you.
Oh, okay.
So you have tomato, cucumber, celery salt, and hot peppers with relish.
There's no ketchup, I don't think.
No, there shouldn't be ketchup.
There's no mustard?
That's surprising.
Okay.
No.
Chicago dogs.
They have them, like, most spring.
If you go to, like, Glendale or Mason,
watch either the White Sox or the Cubs,
they have them there, too.
Walk up and they'll get a little outfield kiosk
or whatever, have, like, a little Vienna dog stand.
But, yeah, to me, that's a no-brainer.
Moj never fails when it comes to food-related Ask a Senator.
I was like, oh, he might have to think about this one.
No.
He's like, I got options B and C in the chamber.
Before he finished a sentence.
He transported his mind to O'Hare.
He's like, all right, where is this place?
Oh, man, so good.
Moj, this was great, buddy.
Thanks as always.
Appreciate it. Enjoy the weekend. We'll do this next Friday. I hope. So good. Moj, this was great, buddy. Thanks as always. Appreciate it.
Enjoy the weekend.
We'll do this next Friday.
I hope you connect through Chicago to New Orleans.
That would be great.
All right.
See you, buddy.
Bob, the Moj Marjanovic.
What up, Moj?
Shitting in the dark in Burnaby.
Right?
Right.
Oh, yeah.
Right.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe he's just doing a Sean Connery impression.
Yeah, right.
I'm just shitting in the dark in the movie.
Not doing anything else.
Thanks for asking.
We got about 10 texts.
Yeah, right now, actually.
10 texts right after.
They're like, I, too, heard it.
I know what he said.
Yeah, I heard it.
Ah, Moj.
It's not his fault.
Goldfinger, you're insane.
Shit down, Goldfinger.
It's not his fault.
The power's out.
All right. Let's do his fault. The power is out. All right.
Let's do some more
Ask Us Anythings.
Actually,
Mike,
this is a good one
because we wanted to talk about
what's coming up
in the NFL this weekend.
And oddly enough,
Mike texts in.
Yep.
He says,
good morning, fellas.
I'll ask you anything.
If the Cincinnati Bengals
sneak in on Sunday,
I have this sneaky feeling that the Bengals are in on Sunday I have this sneak sneaky feeling that
the Bengals are going to go to the Super Bowl that's not so much an ask us anything as a statement
Mike but that's fine they are red hot right now and it reminds me of the New York Giants back in
2007 I just have this sneaky feeling the Bengals are going to sneak in a lot of sneaking no and
get to the Super Bowl and they will take care of the bills because they have Josh Allen's number.
Bengals aren't going to the playoffs, dude.
I'm sorry.
They have like a 9% chance.
Okay, what would, do you know what it would mean?
They need to beat Pittsburgh.
They need losses by both the Broncos and the Dolphins.
Okay, so the problem is, even if they beat,
and that game's on Saturday, right?
Yep.
There's two games on Saturday.
Correct.
So let's say they do beat the Steelers.
Who have nothing to play for.
And it's probably capable.
They're very capable of beating Pittsburgh.
The problem.
Jamar Chase has been fantastic, but go ahead.
The problem becomes that KC would have to upset Denver
and KC is going to rest players.
Carson Wentz will be starting a quarterback for the Chiefs.
Enough said.
I think the Broncos are like 10 and a half point favorites already.
Okay.
And they got AJ and Teresa bringing out the flag.
They're going to be fired up.
Right.
Yeah, A.J.'s going to be watching it with Patrick Mahomes.
Yeah, like there's no way that they're losing that game.
His brother's not coming, is he?
Right, yeah.
He's staying home, right?
And then the Dolphins would have to lose as well.
The Dolphins have a better percentage chance of making it than the Bengals right now.
Look, the Bengals had a great second half.
I would rather see the Dolphins order the Bengals than the Broncos. I'd way rather see the Bengals right now. Look, the Bengals had a great second half. I would rather see the Dolphins order the Bengals
than the Broncos.
I'd way rather see the Bengals.
Yeah, yeah.
The Bengals would be a nightmare opening round matchup.
Come on, Bengals?
They're putting up 40 plus with regularity
in terms of points.
Burrow and Chase are borderline unstoppable,
but you can't, you know, sort of muster your way
through the first half of the season
and then just expect to flip the switch.
They have, but it's too little too late.
And I appreciate Mike trying to text in.
I do think, I understand what he's saying.
If they were to get in, they would be extremely dangerous.
The problem is they're not going to get in.
I think Denver's going to take care of business in very sort of unconvincing fashion
against the Chiefs.
Like, it'll be one of those games where they should have beat them by more,
but they didn't.
So what else is to decide?
I guess in the NFC, you've got who's going to win the NFC South.
Tampa Bay is at 9-7.
Atlanta is at 8-8.
So Tampa Bay would control there.
Tampa Bay plays New Orleans.
Tampa Bay will beat New Orleans,
and Tampa Bay will go in as the NFC South champs.
Then there's some jockeying for seeding there
because you've got the Ram,
the division winners, basically, right?
Like the Rams could finish ahead.
I know Brady Henderson mentioned that as well
with a win over the Seahawks.
The Rams don't appear to be taking it all that seriously
because they're going to start Jimmy Garoppolo's quarterback.
So you've got the one playoff spot in the AFC,
and there's three teams alive, and we already went over it. Cincinnati, Denver, Miami. because they're going to start Jimmy Garoppolo as quarterback. So you've got the one playoff spot in the AFC,
and there's three teams alive, and we already went over it.
Cincinnati, Denver, Miami.
You've got one spot in the NFC still there,
and that's only two teams still alive, and that's Tampa Bay. And Atlanta's probably going to be Tampa Bay.
You have, and this is going to be the game of the weekend,
the Sunday nighter between Detroit and Minnesota, 14-2 against 14-2.
They are the first teams to meet in the regular season with at least 13 wins and a combined
28 victories.
It's never happened before.
This game is befitting of an NFC championship, and it's very consequential that it's being
played in the last week.
The winner gets the NFC North title,
home field advantage until the Super Bowl.
And most importantly,
that first round bye in the playoffs.
The loser of that,
if it's Minnesota,
the loser of that game will be,
and Brady mentioned this earlier,
the first ever 14 win wildcard team.
So a 14 win team is going to open the season or sorry, open the playoffs on the road-win wildcard team. So a 14-win team is going to open the season,
sorry, open the playoffs on the road in the wildcard round.
But against, so against Tampa Bay or Atlanta,
probably Tampa Bay.
Yeah, it's going to be Tampa Bay.
Well, Tampa Bay and LA can still flip the 3-4, right?
Oh, right, right, right.
Okay.
And the only other one that's up for grabs
is Philly's locked
in as the number two in the nfc right so three fours washington's in there as well uh and then
in the afc um it sounds like because i don't even i think the cleveland browns are starting bailey
zappy at quarterback this weekend against the ravenss are 20 and a half point favorites.
20 and a half point favorites.
It's the biggest line I've seen in forever.
And so if Baltimore wins that, they clinch the third seed.
So Baltimore will clinch the third seed.
I believe Bailey Zappi is the 40th starting quarterback
for the Browns since they made their return, which is crazy.
It's such a bad franchise with so many bad quarterbacks.
Pretty impressive.
Okay, so that's the NFL final weekend in a nutshell.
I think I got everything there.
Yeah.
So Rick Dollywell is going to join us next,
and we will talk about Demko's injury.
And with the injury, although the Canucks are saying
it isn't any injury, they're saying Demko had back spasms.
I think it all gave us, not a wake-up call because we were all pretty awake for
a Demko situation to arise, but it was just a reminder that Demko's had injury problems. He
had to leave the game last night. Lankanen comes in. So we're also going to talk about Lankanen's potential contract.
He's a pending UFA who's going to be in a pretty strong bargaining position right now. And the
Canucks may or may not be able to afford to keep Kevin Lankanen. And that might also impact,
let's say Lankanen wants term. That may also impact what they do with Thatcher Demko and whether or not
they give him a contract extension, which they're able to do this offseason. We're also going to
talk about the P.D. Miller thing with Rick Dollywall. Both these guys have their names
very much in the news right now and very much in trade rumors and speculations.
The Brock Besser contract, that's lingering as well.
And the Canucks have a decision to make,
hopefully before the trade deadline with Brock Besser.
And then we're also going to talk about Tom Willander,
the defenseman and Canucks prospect for Sweden at the World Juniors.
Dolly Wall was texting with his coach.
Okay.
Sam Alam.
Sam Alam?
Yeah.
So maybe we'll have Rick Dollywall say
Sam Alam in the next half hour
if none of that other stuff interests you.
