702 on a Fiesta Friday.
Happy Friday, everybody.
Halford Brough, Sportsnet 650.
Halford Brough of the Morning is brought to you by Vancouver Honda.
Vancouver's premier destination for Honda customers.
They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can help with anything you're looking for.
Sales, financing, service, or parts.
I have some news to pass along from Jason Hominuck at Jason.Mortgage,
but now we're debating whether we need to read this
sarcastically or not. Remember we had a conversation
in the Dunbar Lumber text message
in Basket yesterday. One of our
listeners astutely pointed out, you can read
this straight and it still kind of makes sense.
Yeah, but you gotta read it in a
sense that you're joking.
Do you though? Okay, we'll
try it. If you love giving the banks
more of your money,
then don't let Jason shop around to find the perfect mortgage for you.
Makes sense.
Okay.
Visit him at Jason.Mortgage.
I'm going to try dramatic readings, like, every time.
Yeah.
Like a really sad one.
Try it in a way to get people excited to give their money to the banks.
I didn't care for that one.
It was very droll.
Now we're going to do a slam poetry style.
Yeah, right.
We are coming to you live from the Kintec studio.
Jason Dott, mortgage.
Canada's favorite orthotics provider,
powered by thousands of five-star Google reviews.
Sore feet, what are you waiting for?
Kintec, to the phone lines we go.
He is the owner-operator of the best pizza place in the world,
AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
Joins us now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
What up, AJ?
What is going on?
It's a nice Thursday.
Thursday night of AJ.
The summer of AJ continues, even though it's the fall.
I'm with you guys.
I'm with you guys.
That might have been the most uninspiring football game I've watched.
So you and I were texting back and forth last night.
I'm like, I think the Cowboys held the football for 22 seconds
in the second quarter.
And they scored a touchdown, which is great,
but it was all Giants after that.
It was such a strange game.
But whatever, hey, win's a win.
You know, and, you know, the Yankees clinching the AL East,
I like that, but really all that matters is they get 28.
Everything else is mute.
So the vibes are strong for A.J. and A.J.'s pizza
going into the weekend
in a big Thursday night.
Do you have a wager for us?
Because I got to say, last week, I'm like, two weeks ago,
I thought you were crazy and you hit.
And then last week, you doubled down on the Niners losing again.
And I'm watching the Rams get trounced, and I'm like, well, AJ's luck ran out.
And then out of nowhere, from the clouds, the Rams come back and win that game.
So you got anything for us this weekend?
I like Green Bay.
Okay.
Big.
I like Green Bay, and I like, you know what?
Call me crazy, but I like Carolina Obasense.
I love this guy.
So you like Green Bay because I actually looked at that line.
I was like, that's pretty disrespectful to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings are playing pretty well.
I know Sam Darnold's their quarterback.
I just can't buy Sam Darnold.
That's the only, that's my, but hey, hey, listen.
You're buying Malik Willis?
Is Jordan Love playing this weekend, by the way?
No, Jordan Love's going to play.
Oh, he's going to play?
Oh, okay.
I didn't know that.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, yeah, Jordan Love's going to play.
But I like Carolina, the Red Rocket.
Okay, I am.
Good reporting, AJ.
Noted NFL insider AJ joins us now.
Okay, that Panthers won.
Because everyone's assuming that the Bengals are going to go in there.
No way they're going to start 0-4.
But Andy Dalton revenge game against the Bengals.
I know.
Yeah, and the Panthers are four and a half point dogs at home.
I like it.
I like where your brain is on this one.
Right, right.
And there's baseball on all weekend.
And you know what?
Monday could be epic-ish
with that doubleheader
potentially between
Atlanta and the Mets.
Okay, so everyone
knows where to go.
AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
Get there.
Eat pizza, drink beer,
watch sports.
AJ, thanks for doing this, bud.
Appreciate it.
Yeah, you guys have
a great weekend.
Yeah, you too.
Thanks.
That's AJ from AJ's Pizza
on East Broadway.
Check it out.
I got a hat.
Look at that.
It's a hat.
He sold out. Look at that. Check it out. I got a hat. Look at that. It's a hat. You sold out.
To AJ. Again.
He's been advertising with us for like a year.
It's a good hat too. Yeah, it's a great
hat. I don't think it's AJ's.
I came in this morning and Greg's like, look at you, you corporate
shill. I'm like, I'm wearing
the hat of an independent pizza place.
We're doing
their best.
Yeah, nothing can be more grassroots than this.
How dare you advertise for them for free?
Anyway, I am thoroughly, this is a very good weekend of matchups.
Last weekend, I'm not going to lie.
I felt we had to talk ourselves into a few of the matchups in the NFL.
And the NFL has delivered, as it always does, because there's been a ton of upsets.
So it's been intriguing.
But I look at this and, like, the Sunday nighters really good.
Bills-Ravens, that's the game of the weekend for me.
I know everyone's looking forward, like, locally to Seahawks-Lions
because it's Monday Night Football and it's the Seahawks.
But Bills-Ravens Sunday Night Football is great.
Chiefs-Chargers, that's a classic matchup.
I really want to see if the Bengals can get a win against Andy Dalton.
I know it's...
By the way, I'm not going to bet with AJ,
but I'm riding with the spirit of that bet.
I want to see Andy Dalton go in and put Joe Burrow
and the Bengals at 0-4 would be amazing.
You know what's worse than 0-4?
0-5.
Oh, how clever.
Adam Stanley's going to join us now.
Talk about the president's cup did not get off to a good start for the international team at royal montreal yesterday adam is there any way
back from this i think the best thing that happened for the international team yesterday
was mckenzie hughes chugging a beer on the first tee to get the crowd riled up while we were waiting for the actual matches to start.
So that's a tough scene.
Just like you said, nothing went right for the international squad.
What really needs to happen today, alternate shot format,
it's kind of that buzzy, excitable format.
They need to get off to a hot start.
There's no way around it.
They can't be seen. Red on the board, middle of the afternoon on a Friday.
You know, that just can't happen.
The international team needs to get some points.
They need to get them fast.
They need to just have these guys play way, way better than they did on Thursday.
You can't really put your finger on it.
The American side just kind of, they were who we thought they were.
World number one,
Scotty Scheffler kind of did the darn thing.
World number two,
Xander Schauffele closed the door in his match,
making a couple of birdies late.
The rookies hit the gala.
You know,
he was an absolute stud.
Russell Henley paired with Scotty Scheffler.
He was an absolute stud.
His very first team appearance at age 35 or whatever it was.
That American side, extremely, extremely strong.
The only way that the international team can really start to make a competition out of this
is to get off to a good start, a fast start,
in alternate shot here today on Friday and kind of keep that momentum going.
Mike Weir is the captain of the international team.
What do you think of his decision to sit Tom Kim and play three Canadians,
not sitting Pendrith or Corey Connors and actually adding in Mackenzie Hughes?
Pendrith and Connors are each now 0-5 in President's Cup play,
dating back to the last President's Cup.
Yeah, not great.
Not ideal.
He was the best player on the international side by a wide margin on Thursday.
Like, he made six birdies on his own ball.
I think he was plus one, one and a half on the strokes gained total.
Yesterday, he was one of two Americans who were actually kind of in the mix on that strokes
gained total category, just in terms of kind of T to green efforting. The other one, Tom Kim,
Tom Kim was the second best international player from kind of a strokes gained total perspective.
So for me, sitting Tom Kim was curious for two reasons. Number one, I asked Mike Weir, hey,
you're a data-driven captain.
You use data.
You use analytics a lot to inform the picks, obviously,
and then to inform the pairings as well.
But I asked him, hey, are you using data still?
Like, is that a rolling thing?
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, today, are you looking at the data?
Is that still kind of informing your choices?
And he said, yeah, they're going to look at today's data,
and that's going to help things for moving forward.
But they also had a plan for Friday,
and they're basically, in simplest terms, sticking to the plan.
Tom Kim was not part of the Friday plan, despite the fact, though.
So we're kind of getting conflicting statements.
You know, Mike, we were saying that, yes,
the data is helping to inform our decisions,
but the data is showing that Tom Kim was one of the best players on the international side on Thursday.
He's also an emotional spark plug for the team, and yet he is sitting on Friday in this alternate shot format, which arguably lends itself even more to emotion and just kind of getting the crowd really on your side and getting these teams to play as if they are real teams.
So the Canadiens being trotted out, no problem with that.
I was glad to see McKenzie getting a shot to play with Corey.
Surprised that they're playing late.
I thought they would have played early.
Taylor Penderth, like I mentioned,
absolutely the best player on the international team,
so no surprise that he's going out again.
Tom Kim sitting, curious for two reasons. One, the data surprise that he's going out again. Tom Kim sitting curious for two reasons.
One, the data shows that he should be playing,
and two, emotionally and just kind of physically out there
getting the crowd on his side, he's the best on the international side
in doing that.
Tom Kim was disappointed in the crowd.
He said, and he was quoted as saying,
I think it was a little too quiet today being on home soil.
I wish they would have helped us out a bit more,
especially being in Canada.
I know how much they love golf.
You mentioned Mackenzie Hughes out there
chugging a beer to get the crowd going.
What was the crowd like at Royal Montreal?
Watching on TV, it definitely didn't look like
a super boisterous atmosphere,
and I realized that the internationals lost all the matches,
but none of them were blowouts.
Like, they were in it yeah i mean you could certainly two sides to that i mean the first is well hey if you
gave something if you gave them something to cheer about they would have been cheering pretty loud
uh but also you know it's still it's still a thursday right it's it's the end of september
and it's thursday people are at work people are at school you know kid it's Thursday. People are at work. People are at school. You know, kids, it's 15 and under are free to come out here.
So there's no real reason why, you know, a family of four couldn't make a day of it.
But tickets, I did notice, tickets I think are priced a little bit too high, to be frank.
To capture that casual golf fan, a single general admission ticket is $225. When I saw that, I was like, that's a little high to get just your random golf fan from
Montreal or Ottawa, or maybe you're making a trip from Toronto to come out and watch
this event because $225, you can play two rounds at a very, very high end $100 for 18
hole public golf course for the price of kind of one single ticket to the President's Cup.
So when I saw that number, I was like,
how much sort of casual golf enthusiasts are you going to capture for that price,
especially with the parking and some of the other things that it just takes to make a day at the President's Cup?
So we'll see.
I mean, we'll obviously see how it goes this weekend.
Today's weather in Montreal, absolutely spectacular. 20 degrees sunny.
It's supposed to be like that over the next two days as well.
You know, obviously it's a Friday afternoon
and then, of course, we've got the weekend going on
over the next two days. So, could
things turn around? Yes.
Is the price of tickets a little bit
too high? Yes. Does the international
team really have to give this crowd something
to cheer about? That's the big
yes. You know, if they go out and they get skunked again again today even if it's 4-1 you head into saturday you know
down night down 9-1 or whatever it is that's that's not going to be really motivating for
someone who's kind of sitting on the fence but wanted to come out and watch this thing i was
joking earlier that they're gonna have to fly tiger up to play mike weir on sunday in an exhibition
match just as something to promote.
Hopefully it turns around for the internationals
and we have something compelling to watch this weekend.
I don't like their chances.
I didn't like their chances heading in
and I certainly don't like them down 5-0.
But thanks for joining us today.
And we'll see.
We'll see if something interesting happens this weekend
at Royal Montreal.
Adam, thanks for joining us today.
Thank you.
No problem.
Thanks.
Adam Stanley, Sportsnet Golf Reporter, also on the TV and studio.
It's like Inception.
This is so crazy.
Anyway.
Have you seen Inception?
No.
Is that how it works?
Or is that the Matrix?
Whatever.
It doesn't matter.
No.
It would only make sense if you were going into Adam Stanley's brain and his dreams and
changing what he's doing in his dreams.
A lot of golf in here.
There's a lot of golf in here right now.
This is actually awesome.
Yeah, I'm swimming through a bunch of golf balls.
I give you credit for trying to power through because that tournament is-
It's over.
It's over, man.
It's over.
And it's not great when
your poor golf channel is like they work so hard they work so hard all week trying to pump up the
possibility of the internationals making this interesting so on that note i'm glad you brought
that up on that note uh mike weir now i always have an issue with um I always have an issue with promoting something via the media when you're the athlete involved.
Because I know what you're trying to do, and I also know the risk that you run.
So Mike Weir, prior to this tournament, there was a lot of media coverage. And he, I don't know whether he was totally conscious
of what he was doing or not, but by aligning himself
with all these NHL teams at the start of the NHL season
when they were all in training camps,
he was going to get eyeballs and he was going to get sound bites
and he was going to get stories written about him
and what he was trying to pull off.
Right?
And great, like full on, you know,
I think there was a genuine sense of he wanted to build his team and he wanted to get some camaraderie and chemistry.
So for those that don't know what I'm talking about, he was going around and very openly like meeting with and picking the brains of NHL coach.
I think Marty St. Louis was the most prominent one in Montreal.
Yeah.
And he brought the entire international team to a preseason game and they stood up and clapped and cheered and everything he also did
that like going into the lion's den where the possibility of getting smoked and getting
embarrassed was on the horizon and what else was he gonna do not try and pump his team up
or do it privately without the fanfare and without the publicity i mean he's also trying to promote
the event right he's doing i mean here's picked Party St. Louis for a reason, right?
Get people in Montreal out to the event.
Right. Was that maybe erroneous?
In what way? Define erroneous.
Do you want to bring...
Erroneous! Erroneous! Would you invite...
Okay, if you knew there was the
possibility that you were going to get skunked, would you invite
a lot of people to it?
Everyone loves a good, rough skunking. I would sell tickets. Right? What was that? If you were going to get skunked would you invite a lot of people to it everyone loves a good brough skunking i would sell tickets right if you were gonna go out let's say okay
let's put it in your terms let's say that you knew that your band was not ready for the gig
that you were gonna have tomorrow night you hadn't practiced enough so every gig every pretty much my
entire musical career let's just say hypothetically, you knew your drummer was strung out
and wasn't going to have a good set and everything was going to be bad.
Would you consciously go out and try and get a larger crowd
or draw more attention to it knowing that the gig could go horribly?
No.
Yeah, but I don't think he felt that.
I mean, he's got good golfers on his team.
They were the underdogs and all that, but what
are you going to hide? We're going to hide under
a bunch of coats before the president's cup.
I get what you're saying. Not hide, not hide.
I don't think he was saying anything. There was
nothing that he was doing. He wasn't going out
there and be like, we're going to win. We're
like, you, you, we're going to, we're going to,
we're going to, these Americans are overrated.
He wasn't saying anything. He was just trying to
build some camaraderie for his team. I got a
problem with some of his decision-making.
Now, again.
That's where you might, I mean, I hope the Canadians go out there
and play well today.
All I'm saying is.
And get some points on the board.
But sitting Tom Kim was a decision.
He's like the emotional heartbeat of that team.
Now, maybe Weirzy didn't like what he said about the Canadian crowd.
Maybe he didn't like that. I don Canadian crowd. Maybe he didn't like that.
I don't know.
Maybe he didn't like that he was kind of chummy with Scotty Scheffler out there.
Those two guys are good buddies and they enjoyed playing against each other.
Probably the best moment of yesterday's action was when Tom Kim nailed a big pot
and said, let's go.
And then Scotty Scheffler answered.
But they're buddies yeah yeah
they play together all the time right so at any rate uh i don't really want to talk too much about
this you had some ask us anything's ready to go i did i got a canucks before you started ripping
into mike weir for trying to pump up his golf team yeah look how that turned out how dare you
even try that you shouldn't the moral of the story never try i want to go back to the idea that
we could pay money to see bruff get a skunk a skunk spray bruff is this something we could set
up and you invite a lot of people yeah like can we do this like we have to put me in a bath with
what is it tomato juice or something like this yeah like i don't know if it would be considered
cruel and unusual punishment for the skunk because i'm sure the skunk would be terrified but if we
could get the skunk to go along with it
and then spray brough I think that would be a big
money making opportunity. Skunks love skunking. Do you have a skill
of getting a skunk to spray?
Do you have to squeeze it?
You suppress the glands.
Mike the teacher asked the best question
here's the question that is hard to ask
is the competition in need of an overhaul
or should it just end? Is it good for the PGA brand when one team
loses every time?
The problem is, is the international team is
fully capable of putting together a quality
team.
You get Aussies, you get South Africans, you
know, the Canadians, you can say, you know,
the Canadian, wow.
The Canadian men, the problem with the Canadian men is like,
there are enough of them on the tour.
There's not enough elite players.
Sure.
Right?
And you're still looking to guys like Adam Scott on the international team
whose best days are behind him.
There needs to be more talent.
The Europeans are starting to find some young talent.
They need to find some more young talents
in places like Australia and
South Africa and Canada. Ask us anything
from Brandon in T-Town.
Swassen.
T-Town. This is
an either or, but I respect it.
Given
the choice, is
Elias Pettersson hitting the 50 goal
plateau and top three in scoring in the league,
more important than another massive season from Quinn Hughes.
I mean, if we're going to do you have to choose one or the other, yeah.
Take Petty.
Pettersson all the way.
Because I don't think Quinn Hughes is going to fall off.
What's a bad season for Quinn Hughes?
What's his floor?
70 points?
Well, okay, let's say hypothetically...
He's not going to fall off.
He doesn't have that type of mentality.
Let's say...
But I think the hypothetical here is that you can't have both.
You have to have one or the other.
So let's say that part of this is Hughes has to have a regression.
He's regressing from being the best defenseman in the NHL.
Like, the regression will still be pretty good.
Right.
Oh, no, he's only a top three finalist for the Norris now.
Like let's say his production drops to 70 points
and he's top 10 in Norris.
He's still a very good defenseman.
Patterson, I think psychologically,
that would be a huge thing.
Did you notice a little talk aside when he said,
Petey's got to push the pace too.
I didn't notice it.
I didn't notice it either.
Someone texted it into the program.
I'm not looking for
I'm not looking for ammunition
when it comes to
Elias Pettersson.
You know.
If Pettersson hits 50 goals
and is top three scoring
in the league.
Oh my God.
You're over the moon.
With Petey it's not even
the numbers
like that count for me.
It's the way he looks
and the way he
but the numbers will come
if he plays the right way.
Less reaching.
Less reaching.
More scoring.
I want everyone to start
looking for this now.
They call that in hockey,
they call it fishing.
When you're outside the battle
and you're fishing,
you're sticking.
Now, sometimes you need to
poke the puck, right?
Like on the winning goal in Abbotsford, Petey made a great play to poke the puck, right? Like on the winning goal in Abbotsford,
Petey made a great play to get the puck
across the crease to DeBrusque and he
poked the puck.
But sometimes there's a little too much
reaching instead of just skating through.
And it means, and it's like a tentative
way of playing hockey when you're outside
the battle and you're like, let's get my
puck, get my stick in there, see if I can get the puck and maybe poke it free, right? Don't're outside the battle and you're like, let's get my puck, get my stick in there,
see if I can get the puck
and maybe poke it free, right?
Don't get in the battle.
Justin and East Van
will then ask us anything.
So Justin's longtime listener
records an inordinate amount
of Halford and Brough content
and unfortunately
not eligible to win anything
because he texts in too frequently.
Your two faces is his entire PVR.
Yeah.
It's just you guys.
But he always sends good ask his name.
This is a good one.
Would you rather order a few appetizers or order an entire entree when dining at a restaurant?
So a couple of times recently, I've gone the couple appetizers route just for something different.
I think I got last time i got like
wings and a salad and something else and are we talking the price is the same no that i was going
to get to that part because two appetizers can be way more than one way more yeah yeah
restaurants i can barely afford to go out to eat anymore i don't even do it anymore
except aj's yeah they make you tip 35% now.
That's the start.
We went to a restaurant the other day and we're like,
we're not going to have drinks tonight.
And let's see what the bill is.
Still expensive.
Nah, it didn't work.
It's just not as expensive.
Coke was $10.
Was it cheap?
No, not cheap.
That's not the right word.
Appetizer.
The appetizer game that Justin is talking about here
used to be legitimate
because there used to be a significant divide
between an appetizer price and an entree price.
Now, like I've seen a pound of wings
or a dozen wings for like $18, $19 on the menu.
Yeah, yeah.
So you're not really saving any money.
You're just getting smaller portions
for almost the same amount of money.
I like the concept of it.
I will have the truffle fries.
You know what more people need to do in this city?
$87.
Yeah.
You know what more people need to do in this city?
Is have a competitive happy hour.
Like a really good,
I need to go there because it's so affordable happy hour. Like a really good, I need to go there because it's so affordable happy
hour. There's too many
Fugazi name only
happy hours. It would cost too much now though
even for the restauranteurs. You can do it.
I don't know. You can cut corners.
You can also. You just got to keep them in
there until the happy hour ends.
And then jack up the
prices but they want another drink. And then be
vigilant at like $4.59.
Like, you better get an order in.
Because at 5, this happy hour is over.
That menu does not exist at 5.01.
Because I always look for a happy hour.
I love a good happy hour.
Wings are too expensive though now, man.
Wings should never exceed $0.25 a wing.
That should be the cap on chicken wings.
Unless the wing is like a behemoth of a chicken wing.
A-Dog's Restaurant, out of business in five minutes.
Oh, man.
There was this great joint back in Kamloops.
10 cent chicken wings.
Kamloops.
Oh, is the rent the same as in Vancouver?
We used to do better than offering one flavor.
10 cent chicken wings every Tuesday night.
It was awesome.
Chicken wings are too expensive these days.
We need to find a different animal with wings that are cheaper, like buzzard wings.
You guys got any of those pigeon wings?
Pigeon population in Vancouver just decimated.
Someone is coming up with happy hour pigeon wings and you know it's happening.
One day you just walk around downtown, you know there's no more pigeons around here anymore?
Do you guys have chicken wings?
We have wings.
Well, they are wings of a bird. uh mkl ask us anything uh which sport
athlete celebrity was your first autograph my first one was a rod at yankee stadium in his
final year with the team i don't remember any I've never been a big autograph guy. Who was yours then?
Trevor Linden.
Oh, that's a good one for your first.
That's a special time.
The Safeway in Richmond.
I think it was 1988.
Mine was Darcy Roda.
Wow.
That's nice.
Mine was Don Cherry.
Really?
Nice.
He was coaching a celebrity hockey game.
That's a good one.
Yeah.
That's a good one. Do you remember what you got him to sign? Just a celebrity hockey game. That's a good one. Yeah. That's a good one.
Do you remember what you got him to sign?
Just a piece of paper.
Yeah, I had a piece of paper, and then I got it laminated.
Canada first.
He actually wrote that.
He signed it out to you people.
And then I laminated the Lyndon autograph,
and later used it to cover up a hole in my wall that my brother and I punched in the wall because we were screwing around with our wrestlers.
And he chucked the wrestling ring.
Oh, yeah.
Did you get caught?
No.
Trevor Linden saved me.
Was it like Shawshank Redemption?
You had a big hole in your...
It was a tiny hole.
And I didn't keep digging it bigger and bigger.
Covered up with a signature of Trevor Linden.
I was free to leave whenever I wanted.
I just needed to cover up that one hole.
So Trevor Linden, not only was it my first autograph,
but it first saved me from a very serious punishment.
You should have told him this when we had him on last year.
I didn't want to age him.
I didn't want to do it.
I'd love to see his reaction.
Yeah, I didn't want to do it.
Trevor, have you seen Shawshank Redemption?
Yeah.
It's like, where is this story going? Okay, we're way up against it for time. Moj is going to see its reaction. Yeah, I didn't want to do it. Trevor, have you seen Shawshank Redemption? Yeah. It's like, where is this story going?
Okay, we're way up against it for time.
Moj is going to join us next.
We'll talk about the Lions game tonight against the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
The Lions need to get back on track again.
It feels like all season we've been saying,
they've got to get back on track.
They kind of got back on track,
and then they fell off the track against the Argos.
Then they had a bye week,
so we'll see if they're back on track against the Ticats tonight.
You're listening to the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
We're going to win.
We're going to, we're going to, we're going to,
these Americans are overrated.
He'll lose.
What?
Didn't you hear what he said?
Look at the fear in his eyes.
Listen to the quiver in his voice.
He's a little boy lost in a game of men.

Moj is going to join us in just a moment here.
I'm assuming Laddie was also distracted because the Hamilton Tiger Cats are in town tonight.
You just can't hold your excitement in.
So excited. I've just been worried hold your excitement in. So excited.
Just been worried sick that they're going to lose.
Even though they're probably out of it.
You couldn't even get the sentence out.
He's got a case of the Oski worries.
That was pretty funny, wasn't it?
That was pretty good.

Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the Halford & Brough Show
on Sportsnet 650.
What up, Moj?
Good morning, gentlemen.
Just looking over my premiership lineup
while basically wanting to blow up my fantasy football team.
Oh, no.
What's going on with your—I know your fantasy Premier League team is aces.
We've talked about this.
Hey, my fantasy Premier League team, 15 Limeys.
Well, 14.
I'm not a Limey.
The Soho Invitational.
Guess who's in first place, baby?
Bob Lowe.
Yeah, that's right.
Yours truly.
Rogers, Smith Rowe, TAA, Watkins, Allen.
They're on fire, all my guys.
Wow, you got a good team.
Emil Smith Rowe is an inspired pickup.
He's been really good since he went to Fulham.
Good job, Mudge.
I love talking footy with Mudge.
Meanwhile, fantasy football.
You know, I had the first pick overall.
There's no baseball expression, no fantasy baseball expression.
Your first round pick won't win you the pool, but he'll lose it for you. First pick overall. There's no baseball expression, no fantasy baseball expression. Your first round pick won't win you the pool, but
he'll lose it for you.
First pick overall, hey, he'll be
playing on Monday night. Don't worry about
it. He's questionable, but he should be
playing. And I hate,
I shouldn't use the word hate. I just don't
like this guy. I've never liked him ever since he
quit on his teammates in Stanford
in that bowl game because, oh, I don't want to
play in the bowl game. I might get hurt. I might lose my millions of dollars um christian mccaffrey
drafted him didn't want to didn't like him i draft them and my whole team is screwed now
basically because of mccaffrey so that's a problem right that he's going to germany to get his
achilles looked at yeah that feels like it's a problem that That's almost like a, whatever, a popliteus type injury.
Like, you're starting to worry about it, right?
Ah, yes.
The popliteus.
Also known as the popliteus.
So, you're listening to the Alfred and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Moj, tonight, Lions, Ticats, BC Place.
Lions coming off a bye.
We spoke to Nathan Rourke midweek, and he said that for the rest of the team,
it was probably great that they were coming off the bye because guys needed to rest
and get healthy and everything else. He kind of
didn't say he didn't necessarily need it because he wants
to get reps and play football but he did
acknowledge it collectively. It's probably a good thing
that the Lions had a week off to maybe
lick their wounds and
get things right after that very disappointing game
against the Argos two weeks ago.
Yeah, a bit of a trap game. I mean, two big wins
against Ottawa and Victoria, and then
obviously an emotional win
in Montreal, and then you come
home and you lay an egg against the Argos.
But, you know, Hamilton's going to provide a tough
test. This is a team that's on
a winning streak right now. They believe that,
you know, they're the best, the hottest
team in the league right now, according to some of their
guys back east. So, Paul Levi
Mitchell leads the league in passing, and the big turnaround for this team has been actually turnovers the first
10 games they were minus 12 in the turnover ratio department in the last four games they're plus
eight so chris jones has their defense playing well and they're moving the ball on offense and
it's going to be a tough test for the lions uh so how do what what's the quarterback story for the Lions
Could you see a quick pull
Of Nathan Rourke or do you think
Dan Campbell is going to be
A little more
Trusting of Nathan Rourke
Even if he does have a few wobbles
Well first off if Dan Campbell
Is calling the shot tonight something
But it's actually I understand your confusion
Two teams named Lions and two coaches named Campbellick campbell apologies there was dan campbell on my mind because the
seahawks are playing the lions in detroit um that must have been confusing for matthew betts by the
way you think that's why i'm still on the lines and my coach is still campbell um i i don't you
know it's tough to say.
I know what Rick Campbell talked about last game,
they needed a spark.
I think the big thing tonight, two things
will determine Nathan Rourke's playing
time. Number one, how well the offense is playing.
Number two,
whether or not Rick Campbell believes
this team needs a shot
in the arm.
I just don't see Rourke coming in this game
because I think the Lions are going to come out with a better effort.
I think they're going to come out ready to play tonight, so to speak.
And it's ironic because last year when they played Hamilton,
they probably had their flattest performance of the year at BC Place.
If you remember, that was that game on July 7th.
Or probably that was this year's game
was July 7th.
It was early in the,
I think it was late August.
Hamilton came into town in Vancouver
and beat the Lions
and they were in trouble at the time
the Tiger Cats were.
So I don't think they're going to fall
for the same trap twice.
Should we do some,
do we have any ask us anythings for Moj?
Let's ask him about the Canucks.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, Moj is an embedded Canucks journalist as well.
Actually, you know what?
I haven't been embedded.
The only thing I've managed to get out to thus far
was the scrimmage in Penticton.
It's weird.
I'm willing to drive up to Penticton,
but I didn't want to drive to Abbotsford,
so go do the math on that.
Did you have any good takeaways from the scrimmage in Penticton?
You know, I think right now this team, you know,
I think Rick Tockett's just looking for pairings
for guys that are going to play with one another
rather than jobs that are open for competition, so to speak.
I think the biggest concern for me hitting in this season is goal-titting
and, you know, what's going to happen with Demko
and his status during the course of the year.
But, you know, I've heard Rick Tockett talk about the fact that he wants to initiate more
offense out of the back end.
The only concern is, do you have the personnel to do it?
And it's interesting, Talkett's mentioned this a couple times, where he's mentioned
that guys need to be in better shape to play that type of game.
So I don't think anybody's in the Dakota Joshua training camp doghouse yet, but it'll
be interesting to see how this progresses.
Colin Tawasin does have an Ask Us Anything.
It's for all of us, but I thought I'd include Moj on this.
Do you guys ever go to your high school reunions?
And if so, are your old classmates aware
and or interested in your radio?
Not my word, Collins, stardomom or are they not impressed most of you
been to a class reunion the last one i i think i went to my 20th which was or maybe it was my 15th
i haven't been to one for a while yeah i was at my 20th and that was a while ago um and i don't
want to say they were impressed but a lot of people were just, you know, asking and talking about it.
It's interesting.
I went to New West and New West Secondary has like they haven't last year.
They had an 80s reunion, just like a real informal gathering down at the Terminal Pub in New West.
All the people that graduated in the 80s, of course, Dollywell didn't make it because he never graduated.
There it is.
So, you know, it was, well, you know,
high school was about six years,
six or seven years of Dollywell's life.
Were you in the school with Dollywell?
He was in grade nine trying it for the fourth time when I was graduating, so.
How many times are you going to try to work this joke?
I love it.
It's pretty good.
I like it.
He was actually at New West when I was there.
Obviously, we didn't know each other because of the age difference,
but he was there attempting to get through high school.
But, you know, the cool thing is they have this Facebook page of the 80s grads,
and they said whoever's an 80s grad show up, and, you know,
probably about 50, 60 people.
And it was pretty cool because it's just not your class,
but, you know, there might be some people that you know that are a year or two
older or people that are a year or two older or people that are
a year or two younger. So I think they do it like
every year or every second year. So
yeah, they still kind of keep in touch.
We're speaking to Bob the Moj Marjanovic
here on Sportsnet 650. Moj
is a presentation of the West Coast
Auto Group. Great service, great selection
just over the bridge in
Maple Ridge. What game are you looking
forward to this weekend in the National Football League mode?
You've got a great Sunday nighter between the Bills and the Ravens.
You've got a very good Monday nighter between the Seattle Seahawks
and the Detroit Lions.
A bunch of other interesting games as well.
If fantasy football isn't going great for you,
at the very least you can take some solace.
There's a bunch of good games on the ledger this weekend.
Don't even get me going.
I'm telling you, here's the other thing about fantasy football.
I've got to rant about this.
Before I get to the Monday Nighter and talk
about the Seahawks, the thing about fantasy football,
it's a dumb game.
Seriously, it's a dumb game.
Somebody has to come up with a better way
of playing fantasy football.
For the first two weeks, I had Shaheed on my
bench, the New Orleans receiver.
15 points, 17 points. Hey, you know what?
I'm going to address him because Tank Dell's not doing that well,
so I'm going to put him in my lineup.
You know what he got last week?
Zero.
Zero.
Zero points.
How do you get zero points in fantasy?
Shahid did it.
Anyway, I digress.
Monday nighter, Seahawks-Lyons.
That's the game for me.
I want to see how the Seahawks defense goes up against its stiffest test yet,
that two-headed monster in the backfield between Gibbs and Montgomery.
I mean, Montgomery, the downhill guy.
Gibbs more the guy that goes off the edge.
Jared Goff gets the ball out of his hands really quick to his playmakers.
I think it's going to be a great matchup,
and I want to see how the Seahawks defense stacks up against that Lions offense
because it'll be their toughest test this year.
Speaking of the National Football League,
I mentioned we had Nathan Rourke on the show on Tuesday,
and I kind of wanted to ask him about his NFL experience.
But, you know, so I started with saying, like, are you keeping tabs on what's going on in Jacksonville?
Because Jacksonville is a disaster.
Trevor Lawrence looks awful.
And then I just asked him straight out, do you feel you got a fair shake in the NFL?
And the line that stuck out to me, and I think we clipped it and put it up on social,
was he felt like in certain places he was just a guy, just another guy.
And whether that was because he didn't have the draft pedigree
or because he was from Canada or whatever,
it wasn't necessarily that he didn't get a fair shake, but he was just a guy.
And I thought that was a very interesting remark.
Have you heard something similar in talking to people who had experience with Nathan Rourke
and maybe some other Canadian guys as well that have tried to make it down there?
You are just a guy.
I don't know if you remember a couple of years ago,
the Lions had a kid named Jonathan Kongbo.
The kid is probably about 28.
Jonathan Kongbo in camp, and they wound up trading him to Hamilton.
Kongbo was a highly prized recruit. He'd gone to a JUCO in
California, pardon me, in Arizona, Yuma.
And when he was coming out
of junior college,
he had all of these major
coaches flying in to
visit him. And these guys were flying in on their
private jets. Nick Saban flew to Yuma
to recruit Jonathan Kongbo,
who's a kid who grew up here, grew up in the
mainland. And Kongbo wound who's a kid who grew up here, grew up in the mainland.
And Kongbo wound up blowing his knee at Tennessee and never really was the same player.
So he kind of bounced around a little bit between the CFL and the NFL.
And he talked about going to NFL camps.
He says, when you go to an NFL camp and you're an undrafted free agent, you're just a guy,
basically. And what he meant by that was that you're not going to get any special treatment.
You don't have anybody that believes in you.
You're basically a body that has to go out there and move heaven and earth to get noticed
and hopefully to get an opportunity to play.
These teams have too much invested in their free agent signings.
They have too much invested in their job choices.
And there's a reason that you're just a guy.
Usually it's because of the fact that you don't meet the so-called requirements.
You're not a 6'4 linebacker.
You're 6'1. You don't run a
4'640 or a 4'440.
You run a 4'640 or
a 4'740.
It's unfortunate because a lot of times
I think you lose guys that are football players.
I'll tell you a great story, and this is a
CFL story.
There was a guy that we played with at UBC.
His name was Mike Belafonte.
Belfer was, he played junior, then he went to UBC.
So when he came out, he was like 24, 25.
And Belfer was like, I don't know, 6 feet, 180.
He wasn't super fast.
He wasn't super big.
But he was a great football player.
He could kick.
He could punt.
He could return kicks.
He played receiver.
He could play DB.
He was just a guy who knew the game.
And he never even got a look out of UBC.
So when the Lions went to training camp that year,
a bunch of guys got hurt, and they literally needed bodies to throw to.
So they brought him in.
He wound up playing like two or three years for the BC Lions
because they realized that, hey, this guy, he's a football player.
And that's the sad part about the game itself and the way
personnel is evaluated.
The fact is, there's so many
players out there that get lost
in the mix because they don't
have, they don't meet those
criteria that
personnel, people, and coaches are looking
for. Moj, this was
great, buddy. As always, thanks for taking the time to do it.
We appreciate it. Have a good call tonight.
Enjoy all the games this weekend.
We'll do this again next Friday.
What?
No food questions?
No, oddly enough.
We can ask him that one about would you rather order a series of appetizers as your meal
or an entree?
No, no, no.
Two appetizers or one entree.
Two appetizers or one entree. No, no, no. Two appetizers or one entree. Two appetizers
or one entree
price is not a factor.
I would probably,
I'm more of the tapas type.
I love tapas.
And if you're going to
travel down that road,
I'd order three
or four appetizers.
And I love doing that.
Like, you know,
just bring a whole bunch
of appies
or a whole bunch of tapas
out for the table
and away you go.
See, I like it.
That's a good strategy. I mean, we're given the option of unlimited appetizers it's obvious he's the right guy
to ask this question about the price though has the like staggering rise in appetizer prices
altered your approach on that no not really i mean i'm rich i mean they're still gonna be
cheaper than than entrees right i don't know man we're still going to be cheaper than entrees, right?
I don't know, man.
We're getting up to like 19 bucks for a plate of wings now.
Hey, Moj, I got a question for you.
You like chicken wings, right?
I love chicken wings.
I had some last night.
Oh, wow.
There we go.
Is there any place in the greater Vancouver area that you could get good chicken wings
that are cheap?
Like cheap, like I'm talking like 10 cents to a dollar per wing.
Andy's still in this mythical world
where wings are going to pop out. I need to know where to go
to get good cheap wings because you can't get them anymore.
Is there a place, Moj, that you know
of where you can get good cheap wings? Andy's allowance is 25 cents.
That's all I got. No, I don't
know where you can get cheap wings.
You probably go to some whatever pub.
They probably have some happy hour special.
But I'll tell you where the place that has
good wings and they bake them.
They don't deep fry them.
You ask for them baked, baked is Boston pizza, right?
Really?
Here's the question for wings that I have.
Do you like them wet or do you like them with sauce?
Or pardon me, wet or dry?
Dry.
Because I do not like getting wings that are wet.
I mean, you've got to take a shower afterwards.
I always like getting my wings, salt and pepper, Cajun rub, whatever rub. Just give me a rub. Don't give me the sauce. I mean, you've got to take a shower afterwards. I always like getting my wings to salt and pepper,
Cajun rub, whatever rub.
Just give me a rub.
Don't give me the salt.
I'm with you.
It depends how wet I think.
There's so many things we can do with the word wet and rub.
Give him a rub.
He's starting to feel uncomfortable in this conversation.
We're talking about wings, right?
Oh, you're the best, buddy.
Thanks for doing this.
Adios, muchachos.
See you, buddy.
Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the Halifax and brush show on sports net
six 50.
Okay.
And ask us anything came in from Matt, not on the Island.
And I got a good story on this one.
So Matt asks, ask us anything.
Have you ever left your vehicle overnight at a pub only to go get it the
next day and think, Hey,
I could go back in for some food and a beer and
just repeat the cycle all over again so on this note um when we first started working at nbc one
of the first trips we ever made was to the 2012 winter classic in philadelphia this is known as
the trip where i was like inches away from getting hit by a bus yeah uh it's outside of citizens bank
park uh it was a fight we had a good time and for those that know me i like to have a good time I was like inches away from getting hit by a bus. Yeah. It's outside of Citizens Bank Park.
It was a fight.
We had a good time.
And for those that know me, I like to have a good time.
So after about three or four days into this trip, we go for a quote unquote business lunch with our boss at Comcast. And we go upstairs to the cafeteria and it's all very nice and um i go to pay and i realize that i don't have
any mode of payment which is a problem because i've started this trip with three credit cards
in my possession so i'm looking i'm like what have i done and i'm going back and i'm like
oh man so you left three separate credit cards at three separate establishments so i spent the entire day trying to retrace my steps
over the last three days to figure out where like what bars did i go to where i leave them finally i
find one like this is great i find the second one i'm like this is much a great relief and then
finally i find the third one i go in and it's about four o'clock in the afternoon and i'm like hey this is my name
i think it's a master card and the guy looks at me and he's like this is from three days ago
and i without missing a beat yeah i'm here and then without missing a beat i'm like is the tab
still open he's like yeah so i sat down and i had a beer and had something to eat that's nice yeah
it was good yeah so it was so Matt, I have gone down that road.
I have gone down that road.
Sometimes I've left my car,
and then I've woken up in the morning and gone,
where the hell is my car?
Yeah, I've done that.
It's somewhere in the city,
but it was a really foggy night,
and I don't know where it is.
That's a tough situation to be in and then we have phones now that tell you where your car is yeah but i've done that
i've done exactly what he's talking about my phone doesn't tell me where my car is i don't think so
do you connect it to the speakers at all or usually if you disconnect from your car it has
like it keeps note of i had one of the one of the fancy cars had that yeah i remember that but i i've
gone through what brff has gone through,
and the cappers, when you find-
It's a big city, too.
I think we went to some places.
When you find your car and you go, huh.
Don't remember leaving it here.
My dad lost his car like a year ago,
and it took us two weeks to find it.
And it was just like a block away from where he lived.
He just lost it, right?
We looked all over the West End for like two weeks.
And it ended up a block away.
It was an old car, so it doesn't have a tracker on it or anything.
Did it have a ticket on it?
And it was the biggest waste of time.
But looking back on it now, it's kind of funny.
If you call the police and you tell them your car is stolen,
they'll listen to you.
If you tell them it's lost, they'll be like, please don't call us.
No, we did.
We honestly thought it had been stolen.
Because it never happened before.
So we're like, oh, his car got stolen. Oh, wait a minute. There it is. Oh, my God. They'll be like, Dad, call us We did We honestly thought It had been Because it never Happened before So we're like Oh he stole His car got stolen
Oh wait a minute
There it is
Oh my
Dad is that your car
Over there
He's like
Yeah
It's the car
Gurjeet writes in
Didn't Bruff once
Leave his car running
For the duration of the show
When you guys were
At 1040
I've done it twice
Not once
Twice
One was inside
A parkade too
That's unbelievable
Nobody said anything
Who are they Going to say it to I came back And there was like Bodies all over the place Nobody made it out was inside a parquet too. That's unbelievable. Nobody said anything?
Who are they going to say it to?
I came back and there was like bodies all over the place.
Nobody made it out.
Yeah, but who are they going to complain to? Get out of here.
What are you doing in that moment?
Right?
Are we going to tell the,
there's no parking lot attendant.
If there is.
We get emails all the time
about people parked in the wrong spot.
I'm sure they can send one saying,
hey, somebody left your car running.
But we would park in the Sutton Place Hotel parking lot.
And I used to worry, like, that thing is not monitored.
I was responsible for it.
That luck ran out.
Yeah.
I got a ticket there the other day.
Eventually, people do start monitoring.
It's probably because you left your car running for eight hours.
They're like, we've got to start monitoring.
It's a health hazard.
Enough of this nonsense.
Rick Dollywell is going to, well, more nonsense of a different type.ick dollywell is going to wow more nonsense of a
different type rick dollywell is going to join us next he's got some more news on uh the ian clark
situation and he's not very happy uh or he's going to report i think that the canucks are not very
happy that um the news about thatcher demko's injury and what specifically it is got leaked.
So we'll talk to Rick about that and much,
much more on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Do you like them wet or do you like them dry?
Whatever, Rob, just give me a rub.
