Starting point is 00:01:04 We are coming to you live from the Kintec studio, Kintec Footwear and Orthotics, working together with you and Step. Before we get to Rick, you have a pretty noteworthy update, news if you will, from the Four Nations Face Off, involving who will be suiting up for Canada tomorrow. Who's coming in, who's coming out of the lineup?
Starting point is 00:01:18 Sounds like Sam Bennett is going to come into the lineup. Travis Kinechny is the extra at practice today. That makes sense. What's interesting is that Sam Bennett is between Brad Marchand and Seth Jarvis, and I thought that line, when it was centered by Braden Point, was pretty good with Marchand and Seth Jarvis.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I agree. Braden Point is now with Anthony Cerelli, his teammate, actually all three of them. The lightning line? Cerelli, Point and Hagel. Actually, you know what? I actually kind of like that. My nipples are erect thinking about it. So does the Bennett.
Starting point is 00:01:56 So how much does Bennett coming into the lineup? Not that Travis Konechny is a shrink and violet or anything like that, but how much of that is about the line with the Kachaks. Them Kachak boys, this is exactly what it's for. I mean, maybe not to match up against it, but just to add something. I could also see Sam Bennett and JT Miller
Starting point is 00:02:19 engaging on a number of occasions tomorrow. Oh yeah. Biller was feisty yesterday. You see him at the beginning of the game, and he started to scrum vote a minute into the game. Well that's what he does, right? I mean, yeah. Greg is gesticulating wildly.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Rick Dollywell is waiting. Rick's waiting patiently. He's not waiting patiently. He will join us now on the program. Rick Dollywell from the Donnie and Dolly Show on CheckTV joins us now on the Alfred and Brev Show on Sportsnet 650. What up, Ricky D? It's funny, I was talking to Sam Bennett's agent this
Starting point is 00:02:46 morning and I told them, I said, you know what? Your guy's going in. And after watching the Kachak brothers last night, I told them, I said, there is no way they're not putting your guy in. Um, and bingo, you guys announced that, uh, you know, Bennett's going in tonight. It makes a lot of sense from the Canadian side
Starting point is 00:03:08 after watching the Kachak, ucks or sorry the Kachak brothers last night this is a good move. What are your thoughts on the Four Nations overall? Awesome I called it on Monday this is not an all-star game the intensity and physicality wise it's going to be better it was the overtime was so much fun so many great great players, skills, speed, just, and, and I said after the Canadian game, I said, I can't wait for the USA game because it's going to be way more intense. And the Kachak brothers last night, uh, four goals, five points, 13 shots, 10 hits, Brady Kachak, eight hits. He said postgame canada usa is going to be the biggest game of his life
Starting point is 00:03:47 us a coach mike sullivan said the atmosphere is going to be electric against canada that the guy guys that's going to be must watch tv tomorrow like that's to me uh... again that you you you just don't you don't want to miss it's just going to be and absolutely phenomenal. And the intensity and if the Kachak brothers are having 13 hits against Finland, what the heck do
Starting point is 00:04:11 you think they're going to want to do against Canada? Yeah. Well, I'm thinking about Connor McDavid here and, you know, I'm not going to say that tomorrow's going to be the biggest game of his life because he's played in a game seven of the Stanley Cup final, which seems pretty big, but he must feel a lot of pressure to deliver for Canada like the Canadian superstars before him have.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Oh, sure. Sure. When you're the best and the best of the best in the biz and you nailed it though. No matter what happens in this tournament, he's already played the game of the best in the biz. And, and you nailed it though. Uh, no matter what happens in this tournament, he's already played the game of his life. Game seven, uh, in Florida. And you know, how we all know how that turned out, but by the same token,
Starting point is 00:04:54 that this is a tournament that Canada relies on them. But who was the best Canadian player Jason, the other night, it was a 37 year old. It was a 37 year old who said, you know what, I'm only going to play 17 minutes, but in those 17 minutes, I'm going to get three great assists. I'm going to be a difference maker. I'm going to be the guy that Canada relies on. And here's the thing about Sidney Crosby. Um, he didn't play for eight days before the
Starting point is 00:05:19 Sweden game, cause he was injured. Um, he had some sort of treatment. Uh, his agent was on our show saying he had some sort of treatment before the Four Nations. This guy hadn't played in eight days. He was banged up. There was rumors he might not even play. And then Jason, he's the best Canadian player.
Starting point is 00:05:37 So the great thing about a Canadian team like this, you don't really have to rely on one guy. There's so many great superstars. Any one of these guys can be the difference maker in any certain game and as much as you like and mckinnon's right there too you mentioned mcdavid so is mckinnon he's absolutely wonderful when he gets his second third gear going through the neutral zone is there anybody funner to watch no you know so they can it has got so many great players so are the the Americans. Um, so are the Americans and it did, and you know,
Starting point is 00:06:08 obviously they're going to miss Quinn Hughes. There's no, no question about it. Uh, but you saw who got all the ice time on the blue line last night for the Americans. Wierenski really, you know, he's right there with McCarr and Hughes. He's not going to win the Norris, but he's having an unbelievable season with Columbus as well.
Starting point is 00:06:24 So many good players, so many good players. So another thing to keep an eye on is Cale McCarr was not on the ice for practice today. He's sick. Um, so hopefully he's not too, too sick because, uh, they desperately need him to be in the lineup and as healthy as possible. So just something to keep, uh, keep an eye on, uh,
Starting point is 00:06:44 ahead of the game. Um, let's talk about this, um, story out of Penticton where Penticton is leaving the BCHL to go to the WHL. There have been rumors about the big dogs in the BCHL, um, joining the dub, but now it's, I guess, officially happening. Tell us how this all came together.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Yeah, this all started about a week, week and a half ago. The BC Hockey League asked for team declarations for next year commitments, you know, commitments from teams recently and Penticton abstained. I also believe Okotoks from Alberta abstained as well. The word is that Penticton is paying millions to enter the Western Hockey League as an expansion franchise next year. They also played the Kelowna Rockets over 1 million for territorial rights. The number I am hearing guys that Penticton paid for an expansion team in the DUP
Starting point is 00:07:39 some say 10 to 15 million dollars just to get in. I heard 12 about three days ago and then last night somebody said hey Rick you better you better be some say 10 to 15 million dollars just to get in. I heard 12 about three days ago and then last night somebody said hey Rick you better you better be careful 12 is low and I said really somebody said 16 million last night I am hearing some former NHL players may be involved with the Penticton group that's going to the Western Hawkeye League because you've got to get an infusion of cash and you know if you're going to pay 10-15 million for an expansion fee it's pretty tough for one guy to come up with that so I think some NHL players are involved. I've heard of some names but I'm not going to say them right now. The funny
Starting point is 00:08:16 thing is that the Penticton owner and the GM there played a massive role in the BC Hockey League leaving hockey Canada. Now they leave the BC Hockey League. It was Penticton that brought the AGHL teams into the league which cost teams hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now they're jumping ship. I talked to enough people in the BC Hockey League last night, not impressed. So Penticton always wanted a super league in that BC Hockey league like the one they got in alberta they only wanted to play top teams but the bc hockey league governors didn't go for it so what does the bc hockey league do now without their flagship
Starting point is 00:08:55 team the junior hockey land landscape in this province all my goodness it is changing at a rapid pace someone told me last night they don't see the b Hockey League continuing in its current format with all their teams. This is an expensive league. Incredible amounts of travel. So let me give you an example. The Surrey Eagles, they got to go to Vancouver Island. Then they got to go to Prince George. Then they got to go to trail. Then they got to go to the Okanagan. The travel in this league is unbelievable. Budgets are huge, crowds are not. They're going to have trouble recruiting high-end players because all the top players, where are they going? They're going to the Canadian Hockey League. Things have gone
Starting point is 00:09:39 downhill for this league since the moment they left Hockey Canada. They lost Wenatchee to the Western Hockey League last year. They're losing Penticton to the Western Hockey League next year. They have left hockey Canada. How many blows can this league take? Big decisions lie ahead. And don't discount Chilliwack. It's on the radar for the Western Hockey League.
Starting point is 00:10:01 I don't know if they get in next year, but if you lose at that market, it gets even tougher. Very interesting times for junior A hockey right now in this province. Yeah. The travel thing is interesting. I was actually in Palo River this past weekend and the Kings were playing and the Kings, Kings are having a bit of a struggle, but you know,
Starting point is 00:10:20 they, there's still support there in Palo River for the team. But if you think about the travel there, I mean, Palo River is not super easy to get to for Vancouver, it's two ferries. Um, you know, and if you're going to the Okanagan, I don't even know how they travel or whatever, but.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Jason, forget about the Okanagan. These guys got teams in trail and Prince George. Like if you're Prince George, every single road trip, every, there isn't a close road trip for Prince George other than the Okanagan and that still takes a few hours to get there. It's a very expensive league. I don't know how some teams are doing it.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Look, Merritt left last year. What a proud franchise Merritt has been. So many guys in the NHL went through Merritt. I don't know how some of these teams are going to survive. Like, you know, people are saying, you know, are they going to have to end up being the junior B-league? I don't know. But who's getting stronger right now is the Western Hockey League.
Starting point is 00:11:17 You saw a player in the Dub this week announce, as a 19-year-old, that I'm not coming back as a 20-year-old, I'm going to the NCAA. So now players don't have to go to the BC league to get their NCAA scholarship. They can get both, you know, they can get the Western league and then the NCAA scholarship. It's a really tough time for the BC hockey
Starting point is 00:11:39 league right now. Yeah. Like if you were a top player, why would you choose the BCHL? Like if you think about the history of like, I don't know, one name comes to mind, I guess Calteras, right? Like, like why, and he wanted to go play at Wisconsin?
Starting point is 00:11:53 Yeah. Was that it? Like. Calteras, yeah, absolutely. So he, so he played a bit in the BCHL, but why would, why would he go that route now? No motivation, no incentive now, because you can play in the dub for two, three years.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And if the NHL is not on your radar, you can go still get your NCAA scholarship now. Right. And before you couldn't do that. So it's, uh, the landscape is changing and they did this because they were upset that kids who are 16 and 17 couldn't leave Alberta for the BC League without moving their families and for the Western Hockey League you can do that
Starting point is 00:12:29 without moving your families and you can leave Alberta and go to an academy in British Columbia at 15-16 and not move your family but the only league you couldn't do that was the BC League and they were upset with that and but now um... oh boy if chill a lack leaves next year that's that's too flagship uh... uh... that too flagship teams that could leave that we get say it's a tough time i i want to see what the bc hockey league does here to counteract all
Starting point is 00:13:00 that has happened here and uh... boy oh boy it's it's it's talking to a ton of people last night. There's, there's a lot of anger. There's a lot of people pissed off, but also nobody forced these guys to leave hockey Canada. That was a decision they made. They, they are going to have to reinvent the, their selling points for the league.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Like why come here and then just be able to come prepared and be like, here's why you should come here because it's not so obvious anymore. Anyway, let's move on here a little bit. Yep. Um, Thatcher Demko's injury when we last left the Vancouver Canucks, everyone was super excited
Starting point is 00:13:36 about Elias Pedersen, but they were a little worried about Thatcher Demko. What are you hearing on that front? Well, we're going to find out next week. Jason, I think Wednesday is the day the Canucks are back to practice from their four nations, I believe. I'll double-check that. Is he going to be at practice? That's going to be the big telling tale.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Sometimes it's better to be cautious, especially in this case, but it's, I've been told, still being told, it's not serious. It's not the near the hips uh... john garrick and jamie mcclellan couple of former goalies came on the show this week and they both said you know what they're concerned with them goes injuries at the connex got to be worried as well as durability is going to play a huge role in the connex next contract offer to demko they can talk to him starting this july first if he keeps getting her
Starting point is 00:14:22 uh... even demko knows that uh that he can't ask for a huge term. It's been what? We're almost 12 months in. He's on his fourth injury, guys. Not second, not third, but that one against the Leafs was his fourth. Demko's health is going to play a massive role in what they do with lankanin. The Canucks may have no choice but to go outside their comfort zone to re-sign Lankanen. If you give Lankanen term, then what does that do for
Starting point is 00:14:51 the future of Archer Sealaws? So like when I look at this and the decisions that are coming up in goal, they're going to be fascinating for the Canucks. You've got Demko's contract up next year but you can talk to him July 1st. Lankenen is a UFA right now so what do you do? You know he's asking for term and you know his price is going to be at a number that's going to make the Canucks uncomfortable. It is and look what he did against the Maple Leafs guys coming in at the 10-minute mark hold. Last three minutes Maple Leafs have her power play two great stays. The only reason the Canucks were in a playoff spot today is because of Lankanen. It was a great signing give the Canucks credit but
Starting point is 00:15:32 they're not getting that guy cheap anymore. That guy is now the league is noticed you know the league is noticed what Lankanen is doing and you know the league also knows he's a UFA. I'm just saying to you guys like the decisions coming up in goal are gonna be absolutely fascinating in the next few months. Hey Rick I'm gonna throw you on the spot here. Lankenen, one have you spoken to his agent and two if you have did the agent tell you if he's gonna be playing tomorrow for Finland or not? I talked to him last night he was it was interesting I thought he'd go in
Starting point is 00:16:07 there in the third period last night. Agents don't he obviously wants to see Lankton and play but I there was word I will tell you this that you know Lankton made it tough on them he wasn't a slam dunk that Seiros was gonna go and play for Finland last night but I would put him in now I mean he got lit up by the Americans I'd put I'd put Lanken in Lanken in and I did talk to this we Finland GM Kari Lettinen earlier this year when he was picking Laken and he said hey look we are very well aware of Laken and great season in in Vancouver let's see if he goes in tomorrow on the lincoln in front uh... i can tell you jia uh... but mike it is
Starting point is 00:16:49 quiet uh... when i talk about it can i do a quick uh... uf a thing for you guys i checked in with rock best a couple of days ago quiet on the contract front with brock quiet with lincoln at pia suiter his agent was in vancouver last week that's a player that Kanax would want back. Um, I do get asked a lot about Vitaly Kravtsov. He's wrapping up his season in Russia. I think he's still property of the Kanax. I checked in with Dan Milstein earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He said no talks with the Kanax. Look, this guy's not even a point for a guy in Russia. He's not a top six player in the NHL, but he's one of those guys that's when you're not top six in the NHL, can you find a role in the bottom six? Not a bottom six guy. Not a bottom six guy, not a top six guy, not a Canucks guy. That's it. So here's the deal. When you are drafted high and you're an offensive player and you can't make it in the top six, you better change your game and find a role in the bottom six. And if you can't, then you're in trouble. I find it hard to believe the Canucks would have
Starting point is 00:17:44 interest that guy. I don't know. I get a lot to believe the Canucks would have been Trist, that guy. I don't know, I get a lot of DMs, what's going on with Kratzoff. You do? From who? I do, I do. That's why I'm bringing them up. That's why I call them Melty. It's crazy though.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Like who's, why are they, okay, whatever. Well, Jason, Jason, it goes to tell you that this is a good hockey market. They care about every prospect. They care about every guy. Like if I'm covering Carolina or Columbus, nobody's asking me about Vitaly Kravtsov. But they'd be right not to.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Yeah. But I, but here's what I got a bunch of DMs saying, Hey, can you, and I do it. I do it for the people cause I'm a people's guy. You guys know that. You're a good man. You're a good man. You're a good worker.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I'm a people's person. Yeah. So I called Milstein and I asked him, anything going on with Kravtsov. But anyways, I don't,'s person. Yeah. So I called Milstein and I asked him, anything going on with Kratzhoff? But anyways, I don't, I'll be shocked. I'll be shocked guys, if they do anything with him. That's not Rick Tuckett's type of guy. No.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Let's move on here to Will Ender and Lekarimaki. You've noted that they had good weeks and Lekarimaki is certainly continuing to score down in the AHL and Will Ender of course played well and helped his team win the bean pot back in Boston. I guess my question on both of these guys is when could we see them and what should our expectations be because Will Ender has never played in the NHL and Lekarimaki as much as he's scoring down in the NHL, I do wonder if physically he's ready to really contribute in the NHL yet.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Yeah, that's a good question. And I'll get into Lekarimaki in a second and I'll bring that up, but I want to talk about Tom Olander. The decision isn't far away. Okay. I'm not sure how far his team goes in the playoffs. They finally got a good goaltender. but I want to talk about Tom Willander. The decision isn't far away, okay? I'm not sure how far his team goes in the playoffs. They finally got a good goaltender.
Starting point is 00:19:29 You know, they didn't have that for a while. They're pretty an undisciplined bunch. I don't know where they rank up with North Dakota and Minnesota and some of the other top teams. I don't know. The decision to sign Willander is a few weeks away. He's had a good year. He only turned 20, by the way, guys a week ago. Willander is a few weeks away. He's had a good year. He only turned 20, by the way, guys, a week ago. Willander turned 20. Don't discount this guy needing time in Abbotsburg.
Starting point is 00:19:51 But when he solidifies a spot on that Canucks roster, that Vancouver blue line on the right side is going to be set for years with the Ronica Willander. Everybody you talk to about Willander, Great World Juniors, he's had a good year, the bean pot, you saw the assist on the winning goal for Boston University heads up play. I still got scouts telling me you're not going to get a ton of offense out of this guy, but what you're going to get is a great skater, right? He's a phenomenal skater and his compete level. He's a competitor.
Starting point is 00:20:22 He hates to lose. The other thing is, and I do want to bring this up, and I know it's not hockey related, this guy's pretty sharp. Like in school, like, this guy's straight ace. Like he's a pretty sharp dude and he's really, really committed to the education side and he does a good job there. but it just, look, everything you hear about Willander is positive. Like I, but the only thing I get back is don't expect a ton of points. He's not going to be Quinn Hughes.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Like. That's fine though. That's fine. Just, just a solid right shot. That's it. Number four defenseman that can eventually play behind Hronik and you're happy with that. Yep.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Yep. Yep. You're happy. And, Yep, yep, yep. You're happy. And, and finally the Canucks draft and develop a defenseman after Queen Hughes and you got the Ellie's Pettersson, the defenseman. So they're coming and they're finally
Starting point is 00:21:15 doing a good job. Okay. Let's go to LaCaramaque 16th goal the season the other night in Abbotsburg, 16 goals in 27 games. That's pretty damn impressive. I talked to a pro scout who watched him play in Abbotsford this week, loves the shot. The puck's on his stick, off his
Starting point is 00:21:30 stick, back of the net. Did you see the goal? Puck on his stick, off his stick, back of the net. Now you mentioned it, not me, but I was going to bring it up Jason, a slight build. I think he's only 170 pounds. That comes in time. You got your physical maturity, mental maturity. He's only 20 years old. This is going to be a big summer for La Caramacchi. I'm going to take you back to two years ago. He was going through a tough time. He heard the whispers. He was out of shape. That summer, he was a man on a mission. He worked hard on his conditioning. He came back, scored 19 goals in the top Swedish league. He got the message, this kid is dialed in. I don't know when he becomes an NHL regular, but he's going to get there. This kid is really dialed
Starting point is 00:22:20 in. And you don't think the Canucks have been asked about La Caramacchia and Will Lander last year and this year when it comes to trade talks? Of course they have. They're the only two blue chip prospects that Canucks have. Last year's draft Canucks didn't have a pick in round one or two and then they traded the guy in the third round. Well guess what? There's not much coming. There's not much coming and it's a big reason why they haven't traded the first rub pick this year so for the second time in the last five years the canucks will not have bill have two drafts where they didn't have a pick in the first three rounds
Starting point is 00:22:53 back to moralize is a franchise it doesn't help your team in avisburg then you got to go to europe to get the uh... niles amman and and the uh... the carlson's then you got to go to the Western Hockey League and get overagers like R. Steve Baines and Chase Wooters and Tristan Nielsen. So look, when you got two guys like this, hang on to them, develop them.
Starting point is 00:23:16 And, but I just, the big question you asked, Jason, is when are they going to be NHL regulars? And the answer is up to them. Nobody else. Okay. I want to ask you one final question. We only got a minute to go here. Um, unless you got time, take it. Um, season ticket prices going up, uh, how
Starting point is 00:23:36 dramatically and how confident are the Canucks that they are going to find enough buyers? Oh, okay. So you see Twitter, everyone that last night, I, we just got a text into our Delaney's okay, Tyrone Lang lane box, 20% higher. The reason that it's going up, salary caps jumping up 8.5%.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Next year, the owner's got new seats going in. You have to factor in the Canadian dollar. It's not great right now. Right? Donnie and I still talk about going to Canucks games in the early eighties, seventies for $7 a ticket. I know it's a different time.
Starting point is 00:24:15 You can't even get a bottle of water at a Canucks game for seven bucks. Programs are three bucks. I got the program at the Coliseum for $1. Oh my God, you're out doing me here. You know, I, well, I'm freaking 500 years old, but I remember late seventies. Um, but I don't know, they're, they're pricing
Starting point is 00:24:35 60, 70% of the public out. They can't go to games. I talked to somebody. It's more than that, I think. I think 80%. Is it just now, is it just for the rich? They go to Canucks games%. Is it just now, is it just for the rich that go to Canucks games?
Starting point is 00:24:45 Is it just corporate? You know, average Joe Blow works his ass off. Can't go to Canucks game now because tickets are 150, 200, 250. Doesn't it reflect the rest of the world and the problem of inequality, financial inequality that's causing all these problems? And here's another one for you, revenue streams.
Starting point is 00:25:05 If this owner runs out of revenue streams, it gets worse. You know those four games on prime? It's probably going to be seven games on prime and then ten games on prime and then 15. Because if you run out of revenue streams and the cap keeps going up, you're in trouble. Yeah, I always say the best seat in the house is on your couch. You got your pillows your blankets your crown And away you go Rick powerhouse hit buddy as always Nothing Elliot Friedman called my to sell at about the seven-minute mark of this interview. I didn't take it
Starting point is 00:25:41 I didn't take it. Hey Rick. Happy Valentine's. Happy Valentine's day to you. You too are my radio Valentine's. Have a good one. Bye. Bye. See you buddy. Rick Talleywell. It's always an adventure with Rick. What a gift. That was another tour de force. It was.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Freak. Sometimes I'm just left kind of speechless after these, which is bad because I'm a radio host. Freage what? Freage called him mid I'm a radio host. Freage what? Freage called him mid hit. Yeah, yeah. Freage is going to be like, don't ever do that again. If I call, you answer the phone. Okay.

Okay, I'm going to do a very fast what we learned and it was that I learned that Kale McCarr, dun dun dun, is not at practice for Team Canada today ahead of tomorrow's huge match against the US at the Four Nations faceoff. Four Nations facing off, no Kale McCarr, he's ill.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Did he seem slightly less effective in that game? He played 28 minutes. I know, but like, it's toward the end of the game, but when he broke his stick, and he sort of just kind of lollygagged off the ice. Well, Greg, maybe he was already feeling the effects. Maybe he was feeling it, yeah. Now he cut him some slack.
Starting point is 00:28:24 They can't afford to lose any more defensemen. They're already down one because Shay Thador is out for the remainder of the tournament with a hand injury, a wrist injury. So Travis Sandheim is going in. They really cannot afford to lose Kael McCarr. I sure hope he's okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Okay, that's my What We Learned, Moocow that. Ah! Adogs What We Learned is gonna be announcing the winners of two things. Okay, Mucow. Do we Mucow the winner? It's still what we learned. He learned that those people won those things.

Starting point is 00:29:54 Kristen Richmond asked us anything. If the two of you were selected to be part of a remake of a sitcom, what sitcom would you want to remake and which characters would you be? What sitcom would you want to remake and which characters would you be? The answer is obvious. You would be Dharma and I would be Greg. Classic show. Oh, not the odd couple? I forgot about that show. I just tried to pick the most random. You would be Dharma.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Did Greg from Dharma and Greg later resurfaces one of the guys from Criminal Minds? I don't know. I think he did. What a weird crossover, Dharma and Greg. What a totally random. I love Lucy, you could do I love Lucy. It would be Perfect Strangers.
Starting point is 00:30:37 Yeah, Perfect Strangers. It would be Perfect Strangers, you would be Balki. I am lovely. And I'd be Larry. And I would think that I was in control. And then the hook is that the guy in control Actually isn't in very good control. It was his son at all
Starting point is 00:30:53 It was his simpleton cousin the whole yeah for me pos. It's not a sitcom, but you could do X-files Okay, are you really part of this conversation? I'm Scully the the scientific one and I'm Mulder. Yeah, the guy loves conspiracy theories. Yeah, I do love conspiracy theories. Yeah. By the way. Ruff would always try and talk you out of it. I'm not, half joking, but half serious.
Starting point is 00:31:12 How far away do you think we are from the inevitable Cheers reboot? You know what's going to happen, right? They don't reboot it. I bet you they'll never find it. They canceled the Frasier reboot. They'll never find the magic. I know.
Starting point is 00:31:24 That Cheers had. But that's not the point. The point is that this is Hollywood and TV now. It's just, let's take an old show and reboot it. Yeah, yeah. And you know Cheers is next. They'll ruin it otherwise. Like a retirement home bar or something like that?
Starting point is 00:31:36 They will ruin it otherwise. You can see a bunch of angry old drunks. Yeah, now you want me to turn into breath and be old man. Don't mix your pills with your booze. But that's the best way They go through his coat pocket they're like we found the Vicodin like it's not By and Cliff he's got some trivia Cheers I know this is gonna make crazy. This is gonna be over the edge right now in today's
Starting point is 00:32:15 Oh cliff Clavin actually in today's modern world. He would be like a sniper or something like that It's close to a perfect comedy as you're ever gonna get what cheers in a return home no no cheers Just cheers in general here's a general cheers in general. I stopped trying to ruin it I prefer Frazier. No, no, no cheers because come on man. Cheers also did the very difficult thing of Introducing new characters into a show which is usually a sign of desperation like okay here comes poochie. Yeah, Woody It's that was an incredible like stand like that very rarely Do you make an original cast better by adding a new character? I heard I preferred Rebecca to Shelley long. It was great. Like that is a really difficult thing to do They had the best they had the best sports cross crossovers to Kelly McHale. Kevin McHale was incredible on that Okay, I'm back when Kevin McHale was god were old
Starting point is 00:33:00 He was he was like playing for the Celtics. Oh, yeah. He was like 21 years old Okay so old. He was like playing for the Celtics. Oh yeah, he was like 21 years old. Okay, so earlier we were talking about the winning what we learned, right? And there were multiple answers to it, like what would you rename? Like Michigan said, like Mexico's pretty good, like gun control is pretty good. Like Trudeau. That's a very funny one as well. This one also, I think this deserves a lot of different answers and we'll come up with the right one, okay? So Woodrow the Eligible Bachelor, he sent this last night, okay? We're gonna walk through this together.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Now we should preface by saying this almost tore the show apart before we even started the show. But then we all realized we were talking about the same thing. I realized it later than you guys did but I finally clued in. So, 33 years ago today,
Starting point is 00:33:44 one of the most iconic Simpsons episodes of all time went to air. It's Bart the Lover. The Colesnode's version, it's the one where he finds that his teacher, Mrs. Krabappel, had a want ad to Singles Find Looking for Love, and he responded to it with a fictional character named Woodrow. When he needed a picture of Woodrow, he went to a little used book in the library called NHL Stars of 1969 and clipped out Gordie Howe's picture. Iconic line, strap on your skates, Gordie, you're going in. Right? Woodrow, the eligible bachelor wants to know if you were going to reboot that in today's,
Starting point is 00:34:22 so 2025, what NHL player would you use to replace Gordie Howe? So Gordie, his picture, it's a younger picture of him, his hair is still brown, he's looking very like, how old would you say he looks in this one? So in- Mid 30s? But in 1969, the season, when he was playing
Starting point is 00:34:47 with the Red Wings, Gordie Howe turned 40 years old. Right, okay. He looks about 40. Yeah, yeah. You've seen the picture of Gordie Howe when he was fishing. Yeah. And he's just completely yoked and he looks, I'm like, look at Gordie Howe.
Starting point is 00:34:59 Yeah. Tall drink of water, Gordie Howe is, anyway. So we were like, you'd have to go, the time- Elbow me in the face any day. Any time of the day, Gordie Howe is anyway. So we were like, you'd have to go elbow me in the face any day, any time of the day, Gordy, any time of the day. So the equivalent timeframe is basically the 1969 stars of the NHL would have to be 2002, right?
Starting point is 00:35:17 If we were going to do a modern version. So you'd have to go to 2002 and find someone of the same age group, the same caliber of player, and the same level of handsomeness. Laddie said Brendan Shanahan. Correct. Which I got a lot of time for.
Starting point is 00:35:36 The second most Gordie Howe hat tricks in NHL history. Good head of hair. Good head of hair, similar play style to Gordie Howe. It's like the defined jaw line that Gordie also had. You know? Yeah. That was my pick. So the only issue I have with it is that in the 2002
Starting point is 00:35:51 NHL season, Brendan Chanahan was 33. That's fine. He's a little shy. You're nitpicking right now. My choice was Adam Oates. Adam Oates? Because in age 39 in 2002, led the NHL in assists. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:05 He's a hall of fame hockey player. He's a brand ambassador for Harry Rosen, which I found out during hours of research last night. So a handsome enough man to be doing some. I don't think he's got the hair. I don't think he's got the hair. Now Jason brings up an important point.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Hair is so important. He does not have the cloth. Yeah. As opposed to Brandon Shannon, but those are, those are our choices. Like he doesn't have bad hair, but it's just not outstanding. It's not have the cloth. Yeah. As opposed to Brandon Shanahan, but those are, those are our choices. Like he doesn't have bad hair, but it's just not outstanding. It's not like that Irish mane of hair that
Starting point is 00:36:31 Brandon Shanahan has, you know. So those are the choices. We spent a lot of time going over this and thank you to Woodrow, the eligible bachelor for sending that in. It was a fun exercise. Okay. Uh, sometimes we reward passion and Tyler on
Starting point is 00:36:44 the mountain really wanted to send this in all exercise. Okay. Uh, sometimes we reward passion and Tyler on the mountain or really wanted to send this in all week. And he finally just, he got me. What I learned last weekend at the giants versus silver chips game is Burke hood is the best player on the Vancouver giants and the Canucks need to have their eyes on him. Laddie confirmed. Yes, he is a goaltender. He's a young goaltender. I believe he is 17. Is he one of the young guys? Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:12 He's one of the younger players. He's ranked for this year's draft. He's not up in the top rounds, but he's expected to be picked somewhere in the draft. So he's going to be drafted, which is pretty good. I mean, typically a goalie, unless he's incredible, isn't going to go in the first or maybe even second round. His first half was a little rough. The Giants actually had a bit of a goal-tending problem and ended up going with Berkhood and he's
Starting point is 00:37:36 taken off ever since being sort of declared the starter. So he's one to watch for sure. I wouldn't be upset if the Canucks went out and grabbed Berkhood. So you tried, you tried, you tried. You sent in that What We Learned at least 20 times and we finally read it, so congratulations.
Starting point is 00:37:51 He made it a goalie one, so you had to ask me. I've got a goalie What We Learned, if you want one. Sure. I learned, this is me learning this actually. I was gonna do this earlier, but we'll do it now. On this day in 1971, a certain Detroit Redwings goalie got his first ever NHL shutout. 1971 Detroit Redwings goalie, first ever NHL
Starting point is 00:38:13 shutout, can you guess who it is? Rutherford? Uh, Jimmy. Jim Rutherford. Jimmy Rutherford. On this day in 1971, Jim Rutherford got his first ever NHL shutout with the Detroit Red Wings. And they're like, how did you do it?
Starting point is 00:38:27 You're like five four. And he was wearing. It seemed impossible. One of the most hilarious, he had the Jason mask, right? Just the small white one, but they had the red wings coming out from his eyes. Yes. It's an amazing mask. And then they named a trophy after him.
Starting point is 00:38:41 And what, laddie, at what point in goalie history did they go, what if guys, instead of putting the smallest guys in, in, in the goal, we put in big guys, they're still athletic, they're still athletic, but it's just that they cover more of the goal. Uh, about late nineties, early two thousands, they started to figure that out right when I was coming up through the system and I was tall, but not tall enough.
Starting point is 00:39:07 So I actually have a genuine question for you here. The butterfly style, Patrick Wa, right? Esposito a little bit. Okay. So like how did it. But the technical side of it and the teaching of it came out of Quebec, Patrick Wa. Was it, was it like, was it one guy that was like,
Starting point is 00:39:23 what if we tried it this way? Or was it a gradual thing where it took a while for it to totally change? Esposito was kind of the first one to try it. There were a few goalies over the years that would drop down, but they wouldn't move around in the butterfly, like you see modern goaltenders doing.
Starting point is 00:39:40 That started to come in, in the late 80s, early 90s. Like the pushing from post to post. And pushing from post to post, sliding in the butterfly. That was Patrick Waugh and the Allairs. So you hear the Allaire brothers. Yeah, yeah. They were big into sort of coming up with the playbook, the textbook on how to use the butterfly
Starting point is 00:39:56 effectively, which is when you saw it start to take off. Cause it was funny, if you look at, I mean, we talk a lot about Ovi's goal chase and, um, you know, how did Gretzky score so many goals? So many of his goals were scored by getting the goalie going the wrong way, sliding the puck on the ice, and then the goalie was like, I'm out of hands.
Starting point is 00:40:17 No way to stop myself. Yeah, right? Like, but it was almost like, yeah, they weren't necessarily going down and sliding, they were standing up. That's what made it easy to beat the goalies because they weren't down on the ice. And it was not just the dropping part they could do.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Like I said, there's goalies in the past that would drop, but it was the using of your momentum to get up with the proper leg and kind of vault yourself into the right direction. And getting goalies going the wrong way was such a key. And now it's kind of like, I mean, you can do it, but not to the same extent that it used to be. It's come a long and now it's kind of like, I mean, you can do it. Their edge work is so good. But not to the same extent. Yeah, it's come a long way since 89, 90, but yeah,
Starting point is 00:40:49 it's here to stay. Patrick and Langley, hashtag WWO, what we learned. If the Halford and Bref show identified as an NHL forward, they would not be left wing or a right wing, but center. That was early this morning when we were in the middle of our political discourse. Oh, are we centrist?
Starting point is 00:41:04 Because that's not, that people make fun of centrist too. It's always on the fence, trying to appeal to everyone. Classic Alfred. Good people on both sides. Oh man. Ryan, the VSB carpenter, I think he sent in one earlier. He's done a lot of work today. He's a carpenter. Hashtag WWL, we learned the Kachak brothers were two bandanas away short from being the real life Bash brothers. I had that poster growing up, the Bash brothers poster, which was amazing by the way.
Starting point is 00:41:31 I just saw it for the first time. You just saw it for the first time? I just saw it for the first time. Yeah, I can't remember, the name of the company that made, everyone knows the posters we're talking about, right? Sports posters. Yeah, but there was, it was like a brother duo that made them.
Starting point is 00:41:43 Oh God, what were their names? The Bash brothers? No, no, no, there was a- They were the Bash brothers of posters. Yeah, but there was there was an it was like a brother duo that made them. Oh, God, what were their names? The Bash Brothers? No, no, no. There was a they were the Bash Brothers of posters. They were an artistic duo that dressed and designed. So there was like the Brian Bosworth one. Right. The Stacos brothers. Thank you. The Stacos brothers. Yes. The Wizard of Boz. And then there was there's an Eric Davis one, which I guess his nickname was like Magnum
Starting point is 00:42:06 or something like that. He had a. Looking at a Deon Sanders one. Yeah, he had like. Eric Davis, the Cincinnati Reds guy. Really? It was like a hitman style one and he was actually had like a gigantic cartoonish gun
Starting point is 00:42:18 that was shooting baseballs. I told you about the Xavier McDaniel poster I had. Yeah, that one was great. It was the X-Man Cometh. Yeah. And, uh, phrasing. And, but he had two Dobermans. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:31 It was a great one. And he was wearing like, uh, like I thought, God, he was wearing like a jean jacket or something like that. I was like, that is real. That's it. Like, do kids have, but probably not posters anymore like that?
Starting point is 00:42:42 No, no. But you know what? Posters were awesome. I actually saw, I don't know where it was from, but it came across my feed and it was like, kids today don't know what they're missing without having sports posters on the wall. My kid has-
Starting point is 00:42:55 Remember all the Michael Jordan ones? So what do they have on their wall now? I don't know, they don't look at the walls, they're looking at their iPads. Yeah. Wall background on their iPads. They don't need wall stuff, because they don't go in their rooms and look at nothing.
Starting point is 00:43:06 The poster on the wall is now the wallpaper on your phone, I would imagine. I had the poster with all the goalie masks. I don't know if you've seen that icon. Yeah, that's a good one. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was the one in my room growing up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Missed those days. Missed those days.
Starting point is 00:43:18 Half the time we just end up nostalgic and sad about our lives now. That's part of getting old, isn't it? Yeah, I guess. Ask us anything. We've been celebrating the cap going up about the flexibility for teams. Does it come as a surprise that ticket prices are increasing? Where are these millions expected to be coming from?
Starting point is 00:43:37 Can't wait to see beer prices next season. Okay. A lot of the times when the salary cap goes up, the reason isn't just, well, they're going to raise ticket prices. Um, it's, they have found other revenue streams. Right. Like you will see, um, we just announced a big
Starting point is 00:43:56 new media rights deal and the TV rights are going from this to that. And that's why the cap is going up. Um, I have to think that part of the cap going up is just inflation. Yeah. Braces are getting more expensive. The cap's going to go up.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Um, but I'd be curious to actually talk to someone about that. Like why is the cap going up so much? Because if you've got someone from the NHL, they'd just be like, business is great. Strong, yeah. We've been doing such good business. But the other thing too is like,
Starting point is 00:44:29 I'm going to genuinely be curious about, um, how ticket sales go if the Canucks do increase prices by like 20% for seasons tickets, because, you know, I've been to a few games this season, and for the most part it's been full. And again, like there are not a lot of people, but enough people out there that do have a lot of money in this city. They've made money in various ways and they have a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:44:59 And for them, they'll be like, okay. But I'll be curious to see on a corporate perspective, you're selling season's tickets, like how many companies, small to medium sized businesses that may have a budget for entertaining clients or rewarding their employees, how many of them are like, hey, we're a business, like we're multimillion dollars in revenue every year, but even for us now, this is getting a bit ridiculous. Brandon in Vancouver, well, then ask us anything. He wants to know, is Sam Bennett even good enough to keep up at this pace at the Four
Starting point is 00:45:34 Nations faceoff? I get that he does the extracurricular stuff, but this is a single one-off game, not a playoff series. He's just an average 50-point center in terms of talent. Brandon, they brought Sam Bennett on the team specifically for this single one off game. They saw what the US did yesterday and specifically what the Kachak guys did and to a lesser degree, what JT Miller did. And that's the reason that you bring Sam Bennett to this type of tournament is he's going to come in
Starting point is 00:45:59 and he's going to match or outmatch whatever physicality the US is going to bring. Because you know, the US is going to be very physical tomorrow. Yeah I wonder if, you know how Drew Daddy was saying after the Sweden game, that's the fastest game I've ever been a part of. I actually wonder if the Canada-US game might be a little slower. I'm not saying it's going to be a slow game. And I don't know, maybe it's going to be a sprint out there, who knows. But I think there's the potential for the Americans to be like, we're going to grind.
Starting point is 00:46:29 This is going to be a physical game. We're going to grind you down physically. We don't want you to skate. We're not going to let you skate like the Swedes let you. Sullivan talked a lot about dictating things. We're not going to adapt to how other teams are playing. We're going to go and dictate the style that we want. And that was being very physical right off the hop yesterday and getting in people's faces and being aggressive and, you know, kind of setting the tone
Starting point is 00:46:53 physically either way. It's going to be awesome. I hope they do it on Saturday because I want fireworks folks. It's been a fun show. Thank you all for listening. Thank you all for contributing and have a happy Valentine's Day We got to get out of here for now, but we will be back on Monday signing off I have been Mike Alfred. He's been Jason Brough. He's been a dog and he's been laddie
Starting point is 00:47:13 This has been the health for the Brough show on sports that My nipples are erect thinking about it
