Starting point is 00:01:12 Not yet. I was saving it for a special occasion. Me too. Yeah. It's a good, good, uh, when I have a night alone. That's right. When I ran out of the other bottle, it's come on, Pee, move your feet. Uh, it is, it's been, it's been staring at me. I feel like it's too good. for me. It is too good for me. Yeah, yeah. What's it called? I can't remember the name off the top of my head. I'm sorry, but, um, I believe it's in Spanish. Yeah. What's the bottle look like? Thankfully, you didn't say it's in Mexican, which is, that was, I knew that was very close to be coming out. Ah, it's in some language. I believe it's Mexican. Uh, no, it's, uh, I can't
Starting point is 00:01:48 remember the name of tequila, but, uh, is the bottle, what's supposed to look like? Why do we have to do this right now? I'm just curious. Yeah, I know you're curious. It looks, it looks expensive and better than me. Starting point is 00:02:24 to adnan i got a text yesterday it was from AJ from AJ's pizza and it said special guests tomorrow talking MLB, Yankees, Jay's Seattle's trade deadline. What a day. Amazing. And I replied, is the special guest you? It is. AJ joins us now, courtesy the Power West Industries hotline. What up, AJ? What is going on, fellas? How's the summer? Ours is all right. I mean, we're almost off work, so it just got a lot better. But how's your summer room? We haven't talked to you in a while. It's been amazing. You know what? I mean, I'm, you know, I'm actually trying to read a book from front to back. Nice.
Starting point is 00:03:00 I learned about Chad GPT thing. It's amazing. Chad? GP. Is that what it's called? That's Chad GPT's surfer cousin, Chad GPT. Well, I figured I got to get with the times here. What's going on? But, hey, how wild was that yesterday?
Starting point is 00:03:20 That was amazing. We spent a large chunk of the open of the show talking about everything. And we didn't even get to the Yankees part of it. AJ, your beloved Yankees rebuilt the bullpen entirely. How excited are you in the wake of what they did? I love what they did, but, bro, if I'm with you, I think besides the fact that the Blue Jays went boring, and I think, and I think, Alfred you had said this, they just don't have any prospects to give away. Well, that was part of it, right?
Starting point is 00:03:44 Everyone was like, they didn't sell the farm. And I'm like, well, they don't have a farm to sell. Like, they're not prospect rich. And they weren't like the Padres who were like, every prospect we had, they're all good. We're going to get rid of all of them. They just sort of, they played it safe, but the Yankees... Yeah, they might be folding, actually, this off-season. The Honduras gave away. The Yankees gave away Flores, which, I mean, in the dead trucks for them is catcher.
Starting point is 00:04:08 But, yeah, I don't know. I mean, that would be interesting for me. That would be an AUA for Adnan. And I want to know if the Blue Jays truly got handicapped by their lack of depth. Yeah. And just not having that prospect at that shining star. Yeah, well, we're going to find out in a minute. He's actually waiting on hold right now. So, okay, before we let you go, we're not going to.
Starting point is 00:04:25 be doing this again until September. We're on vacation. You're going to resume your vacation. So the one day, thanks for taking the time to do this. What's good? Like, give us an update on what's going on. You guys got both places open now. Things are popping as we get through the summer. We're rock and rolling, obviously. And, and we're open. We're open. Obviously, happy hour old day Sunday. And then we are open on Monday. So when you're done camping and don't want to eat any more hot dogs, come and eat some pizza and relax. Beautiful. Buddy, I'll catch up with you during the vacation. Thank you for doing this, man. Good luck reading that book.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I might be still reading it when we tried to be September for sure. Thanks, buddy. Have a good one. Take care, everybody. Bye. Yeah, AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway, 325 and 327 East Broadway. You can go up and say hi to AJ. He'll be the guy at the bar reading a book, apparently.
Starting point is 00:05:10 We should have found out what book. I know. But we didn't. We went to the chat GPT instead. Okay, let's go to the phone lines right back to the phone lines, the Power West Industries hotline. We had them on yesterday. It was so good.
Starting point is 00:05:22 We thought, let's do it again today from MLB Network, Adnan Verk joins us here now on the Halford & Brough show on SportsNet 650. What up, Adnan? I'm doing great, Mike Jason. Love the fact we're going back-to-back days. Andy will right to the top camp given the executive order if we're good to go.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Let's do it. Well, we had a few texters texting and they said, before you get to all this baseball talk, we got to know how was Naked Gun. I'm glad we're all thinking of the Naked Gun, Brough. That's the way it should be. It's funny, our friends at sports on the television side, reached out, say, hey, 9 o'clock Eastern, you and your boy, McAuliffe?
Starting point is 00:05:58 I said, I'd love to, but I have the naked gun on top at 7 o'clock. So I said, that has to take precedence here. I went and saw the movie first, then spoke with their man, Timmy, at 930. But fantastic, Jay. I mean, listen, I had high expectations going in. The reviews are off the charts, right? 91% of Rotten Tomatoes. They're calling it the comedy of the year.
Starting point is 00:06:17 We don't get many comedies anyway, so I don't think it's much competition. But I really thoroughly enjoyed it. And the best part of the movie is the chemistry of the two leads. But unsurprisingly, they're now canoodling together on the right carpet. Liam Neeson, just a fantastic Frank Trebin. Again, those who haven't seen it, he's never really shown his comedic side with the exception of one thing he did, which is in the Ricky Jervais show called Life's Too Short. There's a clip, everyone's going to look it up.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Liam Neeson, in five minutes, it's so funny. And when I saw that, I go, okay, this guy can be Frank Trebin because he's clearly got comedic chops. But excellent deadpin humor, lots of psychics, lots of double entendres, ridiculous jokes, silly jokes, dumb jokes, funny jokes. Penley Anderson playing the vixen. I thought Danny Houston, pretty good villain. Wasn't laugh a minute. You know, it's not going to match the original.
Starting point is 00:07:00 A couple pots were a little bit clunky. But overall, I mean, it's 85 minutes, which I always appreciate. Very brisk runtime. 7 o'clock showing it started 7.28, 28 minutes of trailers and commercials. You're walking out 85. So you could do worse for a lot of movies. I thought it was genuinely funny. Very good movie.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Naked gun. Go see it, boys. Excellent review. Okay, we're going to pivot here. We've got a bunch of teams we need to run through, so much happened yesterday. We're going to start with the Jay's. We've got,
Starting point is 00:07:26 Breft classified it as boring. I said safe, but with the potential to be interesting, depending on how the Shane Bieber thing turns out, what did you think of what Toronto did collectively at the deadline? Yeah, I think it's a little underwhelming, Mike. Like, I think with some of the other teams, I mean, sexier moves and bigger names,
Starting point is 00:07:42 and I think in this instance you go, Bieber's the one, as you said, he's got the highest upside. Like, it could be a home run, or it could be a nothing burger. I mean, he hasn't pitched since April of 2024. So when someone says me, do you like the move, I'm like, I don't know, like, I wish he was 2020.
Starting point is 00:07:56 That's when he won a Cy Young. He was a gold glove award winner, all that stuff. It's been a while. So he's been a good pitcher's in San Bernard that he's been heard. And when guys come off at Tommy John, I keep looking at Sandy Alcantra, who was one of the names was not treated yesterday because he's a NERA north of sixth. And Sandy's a former Sine Award winner, and it takes about a year to get back to who you were.
Starting point is 00:08:14 So Bieber's been good so far on the minors. He's ramping up right now. Hopefully we'll get to see him in a bluja's uniform in mid-to-late August. they'll get a handful of starts and listen at best gets narrow he could be a guy starting game two of a playoff series that's how good Shane Bieber can be but I really don't know
Starting point is 00:08:29 my thought is fellas the price misis been too high for other starting pitchers Ocantra Edward Cabrera Zach Gallin those three guys all did not get moved Mitch Keller are the pirates so maybe the jays okay you know what lower level prospect will take a chance on Bieber
Starting point is 00:08:44 see what happens the other guys they're not doing much for me Louis Varland Thai France with respect especially since the Yankees really bolstered their bullpen. The Red Sox got a couple of starters in Dust and Maine, Stephen Mats. That's why, to me, it's a little underwhelming.
Starting point is 00:08:58 The Jays are a really good team, and they're absolutely a contender. And I like Sir Anthony Dominguez helping up the bullpen, but he's not Yuan, Duran, who to me is an outstanding closure. That's what the Phillies got. You know, he's not, the Mets got Ryan Halsey from the Cardinals. So I wouldn't give it a, you know, I'm not giving a bad grade necessarily, but I would have liked a little more from a Blue Jays fan.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Did the Jays lack the prospect treasure that other teams, like, say the Padres had? Well, it's funny, Jay. Like, if someone says you who won the deadline, like, it's the Padres. It's unbelievable how many moves they pulled off. And what I really enjoyed with this trade deadline, why it might be one of the best ever is that you did this time
Starting point is 00:09:33 expect the unexpected. Like all the names we thought, but I didn't hear one whisper about Mason Miller until he got traded. I'm like, wait, what? The Podger's got Mason. He throws 103 miles an hour. That guy throws gas. And from the A's perspective, by the way,
Starting point is 00:09:46 which is, you know, not only Mike's second favorite team, because he loves the Sut. But, you know, for their thought is all they really care about is going to be good once they get to Vegas. So in two and a half years, who knows where Mays Miller could be. It could be, you know, having Tommy John. So trade him now. The market's high for relievers. You get the number three prospect in baseball.
Starting point is 00:10:02 This kid, Leo DeRase is supposed to be a stud. And Pellner's perspective is like, I got tons of prospects, man. He's treated 50 of his top prospects in the last five years. It's amazing. They have a fountain just, and they're so rich with scouting departments and getting great players. They flip them for guys for Major League Ready. It hasn't worked yet for a World Series. or maybe at some point it will.
Starting point is 00:10:20 But did they really add their strength to strength there with Robert Suarez and Jason Adam? Both those guys are All-Stars. Now you add him. It's kind of with the Royals in 2015. You're trying to make it a six-ending game for the Padres and just try to close things out. In addition to that, you get Freddie Fermin
Starting point is 00:10:34 as another catcher that helps fill a need there. Rinal Herm is the all-star starting D.H. They require him to help their offense. So, yeah, I think for the Blue Jays, when you look at San Diego, they're the envy of every team because they not only draft well and scout while they've got those prospects who they can then flip for other players.
Starting point is 00:10:48 The Jays have their guys. Like Argentin Amal is supposed to be a stub, but they were not willing to part with their top guys, hence why they're going to go with the Bieber who's a lower risk, but hopefully a high reward. You know, I know it's hard to kind of navigate Tommy John and what comes afterwards. The understanding that I got in researching it last night
Starting point is 00:11:05 is that Bieber's already had one or two rehab starts. It's going to be a couple more, and then it's going to be a jump up to the Blue Jays where he'll jump into the rotation. What can we realistically expect? I know you mentioned Alcantar. there and the difference here is like if you look at it beber really hasn't pitched routinely since 2023 when he got the surgery in 2024 he'd only thrown like 12 or 14 inning it's
Starting point is 00:11:29 so you're talking about a guy that's been on the shelf for two years and it's not like he's joining a team at the beginning of the year where the expectations are low like the jays are on their way to the playoffs and he's going to have to bump a pretty good guy out of the rotation to get in so all of this being said what can we realistically expect from beaver yeah One of my greatest concerns anything right now and I look at it overall, Mike, is that if I look at the other studs, right? All these other contenders, they've got the races, right? So the Tigers got Scoble, best pitcher in baseball. Rangers have DeGrom, could win his third Cy Young.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Evaldi's a stud as well. Yankees's got Freed. Rodon's up a little bit, but Freed's a stud. Okay, you can agree on that. Red Sox and Caracchet, one of the best pitchers in baseball. For the Blue Jays, a game one starter, Gossman and Burrios both have 3.8 ERAs. Scher's almost a five. Basset's a four and a quarter.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Lauer's been an incredible story, but God help us if he's starting game one of a playoff series, he's at a 2.82, and then there's Bieber. So, like, the J's rotation is very durable, they're reliable, they're consistent, but there's no true ace, no true stud. And you say to yourself, well, collectively a team has to win, yeah, but in a three-game series, like, I want the best pitchers going, and also you lose that game one, now the pressure's on this team. So I know it's really hard to go get an ace.
Starting point is 00:12:42 I understand that. I don't ask him to go get a number one star and trade deadline day, and Bieber has a capability of that, but I really think anybody who thinks he can be that guy he was five years ago is dreaming. Like, I think he can be a good pitcher. As you said, he stills to ramp up with a few more starts. I think he can be
Starting point is 00:12:59 better than Scherzer and probably in line with a Goshen of Burrios. He can be a six-innings, three-er-run guy. They get that. I think that's fantastic from Shane Bieber, but I'm not totally convinced until I see it. And and especially after this deadline with teams like
Starting point is 00:13:15 the Padres really going for it, can you appreciate how awesome this postseason is going to be especially with some of the teams in it like all the big dogs like you got the Yankees the Red Sox might be in it too you got the Dodgers and Padres the Mets are in it so like you've got that potential for a for a New York New York final but you know and this speaks to my heart you got three teams that have never won the World Series
Starting point is 00:13:40 and they got a legit shot with Milwaukee Seattle and San Diego all expected to be in the playoffs. I mean, I think it would be disappointment for if all three of those didn't make it. No, I completely agree. You know, it helps in the big teams and the big dogs are in it. Yankees, Red Sox, Mets,
Starting point is 00:13:59 Dodgers. But those other teams are great stories. The Brewers are now the best record in baseball. They just took two or three against the Cubs. You know, they don't have star power where they've got a great top three in Peralta, Mizorowski, and now Woodruff. And offensively, again, their names you know Yelich, Churio, Terang, but they're not
Starting point is 00:14:15 stars, but they're great defense. They do all the little things well. They run the base and they hit enough home runs to win. If Milwaukee finally wins a World Series, obviously they won the pennant way back in 82. It was a lifetime ago. This is this late in the season, by the way, they had the best record in baseball since 1982
Starting point is 00:14:30 in Cecil Cooper and Paul Mulder and Robin Young. You mentioned the Padres. They've never won a World Series. A.J. Preller is trying tooth and nail everything it can to beat the Dodgers. Latcher, they have them. They're up to 1. They lost game for it and a bullpen game against the Dodgers. How great would it be to San Diego finally break through
Starting point is 00:14:46 the reward at GM, who's so tenacious and funny to do everything he can't. And then the Mariners. Listen, Harold Reynolds said yes, and then we'll be network. The team that won the deadlines, the Mariners. Are you kidding? And you said to me right now, fellas, just look at their rosters. Forget about where they are right now. I know there are a few games back to the Astros.
Starting point is 00:15:01 But just the rosters. They're starting pitching last year as the best in baseball. I know this year they've been more middling, middle of the pack, but that's obviously hurt by the fact Gilbert and Kirby been out. Kirby, by the way, came back last night. It's been back for a few stars. Last they looked like vintage Kirby, six scoreless innings. This offense right now, Raleigh now is 42 home runs.
Starting point is 00:15:19 He's on praise to break Judge's record and get 63 home runs. A Rose Rain is an all-star. Hulu Rodriguez is an all-star. They just got the best bat available in Suarez who's leading the National League with 87 RBIs and 35 home runs. And they got Josh Niller, it's almost 300. And you throw in a little J.P. Cropper, Polancollico, that's a legit good offense.
Starting point is 00:15:38 They're already top 12 right now in runs scored slugging and center. They should be a top 10 offense. If they're pitching goes back to what they were a year ago, Like, how is Seattle not a juggernaut? It's crazy. Like, I mean, if you said to be best contenders right now, the mayor is a heck of a job by jury depotting and not giving up top prospects, but clearly improving their offense.
Starting point is 00:15:56 It's go time in Seattle. And yet, there are only one game clear of a wildcard spot. Texas Rangers one game back of them. You know, they should be able to hold off either the Rangers or the Red Sox for a wildcard spot. But this has to be, and again, I think we talked about this yesterday, but like the Mariners have had very few years where you're like they can win the World Series this year. They've been around a long time. You know, I've watched them my whole life.
Starting point is 00:16:27 And for most of it, they've either been dreadful or mediocre. They've had a few years. Even when they've made the playoffs recently, it's been like they're not winning the World Series. How many times do you think they've been in this situation where, and their, and their, their general manager said it the other days. Like, I think this team has a chance to win the World Series. Yeah, I don't think it's happened very often. Obviously, 2001, we all cling to the 116 wins.
Starting point is 00:16:54 But other than that, the last few years they've been knocking, but I do think this is the best team they've had, Jay. It really is. Like, they made the playoffs a couple years ago, last couple years barely missed. But you could have clearly seen a pathway where this is now a team that's made the playoffs three straight years, trying to make it a four straight year.
Starting point is 00:17:09 That's how close they've been. And it really has been the offense. Every single time it keeps saying they can't score enough runs. What a shame they're wasting all this pitching. And that's one of the great assets to have in sport. Young, controllable starting pitching. Now these guys are making big money because they can't yet, but they're about to. Give it a year or two.
Starting point is 00:17:27 And you get to start paying George Kirby $20 million a year and Logan Gilbert $25 million a year and woo $20 million a year. And that's going to be ballgame, right? You have to trade one on two of those guys. We're going to sign a couple of those guys and retool. So DiPono knows that. He absolutely feels and senses that urgency. got to win now. I've got to get these guys
Starting point is 00:17:43 in up offense, and it's going to start to get pricey, and ownership has not been showing a great propensive to spend recently. But your overarching point is accurate, which is also this. Look how tight it is. Like, they go in a five-game losing streak, and then I'm going to make the playoffs. It's a disaster. Oh, God. Right. Nailor as far as
Starting point is 00:17:59 are both rentals. Like, those guys are going to be gone in a couple months if you can't re-sign them. So they're really massive urgency. And the Rangers have had a great second half so far. They just got Merrill Kelly, who's a legit, really good start from Arizona. So it is going to be a fun and frantic finish certainly in the West. What do you think about
Starting point is 00:18:15 the Red So, a little overwhelming as well. I look at their they've got a couple starters and I give it, Stephen Matt's like, yeah, it's Stephen Matt's. Like, when's the last time is Stephen Matt blew anybody away from the Cardinals? And Dustin May who says, well, he's coming from the Dodgers, what does that tell you? A team that won the World Series a year ago is willing to part with this guy
Starting point is 00:18:33 and cloning his aspirations of going back to back. Clearly, they're not big on Dustin May. Like, he's one of those guys. If you watched him, you go, oh my God, he throws 95, this and that, well, the lines of a four-and-a-half year, you're right. Like, if he's so good, I don't think he ever show it, then he gets hurt, et cetera. So, I don't
Starting point is 00:18:47 think it's well those with the Dodgers to have an embarrassment of riches and go, we've got to the other guys. They're not crazy about Dustin May. So I'm never thrilled if I'm a team getting a guy from a contender who wants in the World Series, yeah, you can have this guy, we don't think he's that good. And Matt, again, he's like it also, right? Like, this guy is a really
Starting point is 00:19:03 average number four starter for the Cardinals. So I think for Boston, including, they had an issue with starting pitching, but there were better guys available. Edward Cabrera. Alcantara, Mitch Keller, Zach Allen. They kind of went to plan B with those guys.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Now, they've shown great internal improvement ever since the Devers Street, which I was not expecting. I did not think. Dara would go back to being who he is. Raphael has been good. Roman Anthony, they've been much better.
Starting point is 00:19:25 So I think that they're a playoff team, but again, there's only so many spots. Eventually you say to yourself, the Yankees got significantly better because they're bullpen. Love the movie getting Bednar. He's filthy from the Pirates.
Starting point is 00:19:35 You get Deval and Alistar a couple years ago. Jake Bird's a good leftie. So Cashman did what he had to do, McMahon, good third baseman. Yankees are making the playoffs. Jay's are making the playoffs. Tigers, yes. Okay, then it gets to like Astros, Mariners, Rangers, Red So like,
Starting point is 00:19:48 there is a situation where Boston misses, and I think if it happens, it's because they weren't aggressive enough in bolstering the starting pitching. They got a couple of dudes, but they're not studs, at least for me. Adnan, you are truly the best. Back-to-back days, back-to-back hits, and a movie review to boot.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Thanks a lot for doing this, man. We really appreciate it. Thank you, Mike. Thank you. Last thing I have to mention, the Twins treated 11 guys. eyes. That's 39% of their roster. That's something what they'll never see again. Unbelievable. And the fact, they divested themselves in that Correa contract, unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:20:20 I had a Twins question, but we ran out of time. But two years ago, was it in 2023? They beat the Js in the wildcard. Then they went to the ALDS. That was what was 2023. And now they're all gone. 11 trades yesterday. It was remarkable. Anyway, we're up against it for time. Thanks, Adnan. Appreciate it. Thanks, boys. Talk to you next week. Enjoy the naked gun. Thanks. Adnan, Verk from MLB Network here on the Halford & Brough show on Sports 6.50. Okay, let's do a few more ask us anythings, but first
Starting point is 00:20:44 I want to read this really nice text from Jay. Okay. And this is just a reminder that we do have great listeners and considerate listeners. People that appreciate all the hard work that we put
Starting point is 00:21:01 into our jobs. Thank you. It says, good morning, Mike and Jason. Wanted to wish both of you a well-deserved rejuvenating vacation. I enjoy your humor, your banter, your delivery, your chemistry, and your takes. The show has become an important part of my morning routine, and the inbox
Starting point is 00:21:16 is an important part of my sports therapy. We'll hear you in September. That's nice. Thank you, Jay. Nice. It is nice. We have nothing to say because we're so... I'm prepared to deal with the nice thing. Yeah. Let's just go a break. Yeah. I'm used to just like fighting back. Well, I'll tell you, Jay. Yeah. You know
Starting point is 00:21:36 what? I noticed Jay didn't thank the producer, so okay, that's fine. There you go. Whatever. You're, that's the classic internet. I see how it is. That's a great Twitter reply right there. Yeah. Is instead of returning a compliment with a compliment. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:49 On this note, I noticed you didn't thank any women. Yeah, right. I am a born hater, so I mean. Feels kind of ablest. I don't even know what that means. But anyway, no, uh, I just hear it. I put this in Chad GPT and this is what came out. So, Chad GPT.
Starting point is 00:22:05 On this note, by the way, I sent this to Brough last weekend. Uh, there was, uh, I can't remember her name. She's a DJ in the UK, and she was working Wembley for an Oasis concert. And she, like, I guess she was there an hour and a half
Starting point is 00:22:20 before they went on stage, and she was responsible for playing all the music, right? Just very basic DJing. I think she probably had, they don't do CDs anymore, as far as I know, but,
Starting point is 00:22:30 you know, just played music. Yeah, that was it, right? So she put out her set list because she thought it would be interesting for the people that were at the concert and those that weren't,
Starting point is 00:22:37 the kind of music, seemingly innocuous. right? It's just a playlist of stuff that she played before Oasis. I'm like, no way the internet could turn this foul. Zoe London. I mean, that's what her name is. Yes, thank you. The Hotspur DJ, yeah. So the replies, it was incredible the lengths people would go to find something to complain about
Starting point is 00:22:58 with a set list pre-oasis at Wembley Stadium. The entire concept of going to a concert, I think, is to have a good time, right? That would most people go to a concert to enjoy themselves. They pay lots of money. They get to sit there and listen to music and drink booze. And it's a couple hours where all you have to do is listen to music to try and extrapolate anything beyond like this is the set list that led you into the good time. So what were kind of some of the complaints? One of them was not enough female artists being played.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Another one was it was to like specific genre centric. Where is this artist? Where was that artist? And it was incredible to me that this was how people's minds worked in that. that moment, that your natural reflex was to point out every, and not even real flaws. Well, the argument machine is going to create arguments. That's social media. It's an argument machine. We're at the point now where Elmo's Twitter account will tweet something and it'll be a political statement. Didn't you get, didn't he get hacked though? People reply to it. Yes,
Starting point is 00:24:00 he did. And oh boy, was it a hack. That was quite a half. Elmo took a sleeping pill. He didn't know what he was tweeting. Bort with a quick ask is anything. Yeah. Who can get a better tan, Halford or Brough. Okay, so I have only a golf tan. I'm doing all right here.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Like, I have... It's probably Halford. It is Halford. It is Halford. I got the dreaded... I went to Kitt's Pool the other day. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:24 You get to buy, like, tickets to get in there now. Anyway, very nice day. And I was like, I was like, you know what? I'm going to try and get a tan. Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:33 I ended up getting a belly button burned. That's a tough one. Because I didn't, I didn't put any lotion in the belly, button that hurts like the dickens it does it's a belly button burn it's in there it's in the button yeah like believe it or not i don't have like medical term i don't have like i got a
Starting point is 00:24:55 bird in my button but i've got i had a belly button that's the word i was looking for god everything that jay said about the show being smart and witty and with it i'm like doctor i have we literally don't those things hurt we literally took a sincere moment and from that moment, we're here now. Yeah, the belly button burn, the navel burn. How is it now? Is it peeling? I'm...
Starting point is 00:25:19 Is it sore? Did you put lotion on it? I'm in recovery. Are you? Yeah. Oh, it's going to peel, isn't it? That's so gross. Sounds like chicken pox. Leonard Farrer is coming up next.
Starting point is 00:25:29 You should ask if he's ever had a belly button burn. Like, what did I agree to do? Landon, first question. Yeah, no, I'm in shape. Yeah. You're listening to the Halford & Brough show on SportsNet 650. Okay, let's do some. improvisational comedy. I can't now, Liam.

Visit them online at Jason. Jason. Morgan, go there. See what happens. do that? Do you ever think you just slow down on some of the reads?
Starting point is 00:26:43 I didn't go too fast. I wasn't going. He reads progressively faster as the closer he gets to vacation. I don't think I was going fast. Final segment of the show. I think that was just a good old fashioned mispronunciation. That's all that was. Mispronunciation. What? It's mispronunciation. You're putting the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllable. Land is going to know. Sorry, Landon. He's got to wait. You're going to wait. No, he hung up. Perfect. This show is also brought to you by Sands and Associates.

A brief aside here, speaking of the show and shine, you bring your classic cars there
Starting point is 00:27:38 and you get to show them off. there's going to be over 200 of them in attendance. Is that how the proper terminology? Whatever, it's fine. 1957 Chevy here. They're doing roll call. Anyway, I was on, I peruse Facebook marketplace quite often, not to buy anything, just because the most random stuff shows up.
Starting point is 00:27:58 And sometimes if you click on one car, the algorithm will be like, this guy wants to buy a car. This guy wants cars. I got so far down the road. There was a 1981 roll. Rolls-Royce. Nice. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:11 It wasn't nice. That's like Judge Smales. Yeah. It wasn't nice at all. If you were driving it around, it wouldn't catch anybody's eye, but it was still a Rolls-Royce. Nice. I was like, and I almost $21,000. You should come on, man. I almost talked myself into it.
Starting point is 00:28:26 I'm like, what's the worst possible purchase I could make? Is it a 1981 Rolls-Royce? Four thimbles of kerosene. It'll take your own. The guy, the ad was based. What country is this from? It no longer exists. Yeah, the ad was basically like, if you want to try it, go for it.
Starting point is 00:28:43 And I was like, I think I might. But then I, you know what, I settle. You'd have to wear one of those Commodore's caps? You would not recognize me, right? I would, I would be dressed up to the nines. Right, but for a car that they were like, eh. Anyway, and I know Landon's waiting patient and hold. You know what I opted for instead?
Starting point is 00:29:01 And I'm still waiting to hear back from the cellar was a Sports Illustrated shoe phone from 1991. Oh, I remember those. I really wanted one of those. That and the football phone. The football phone was way out of my price range, but the sneaker phone, the white sneaker phone from Sports Illustrated.
Starting point is 00:29:19 I'm just waiting to hear back from the seller. I hope to land it. Anyway, let's go to the phone lines now. The Power West Industries hotline, Landon Ferraro joins us here on the Halford and Brough show on SportsNet 650. Morning, Landon, how are you? Oh, good Morgan, guys.
Starting point is 00:29:31 How are we doing? That was very well done. Oh, man. I don't know how to broadcast proper. Okay, you do. You've got a new podcast, the 100% Canucks podcast with John Shannon. We were running through the guest list that you guys have racked up already in just seven episodes. Pretty impressive. You guys most recently spoke to Jake DeBresk. What were there some big takeaways in speaking with DeBresk?
Starting point is 00:29:52 Well, I mean, the best part is just listening to guys and how they think the game and really go at it. And for Jake, you know, he'd been in Boston for the first part of his career. And he comes here and he talks about how much, you know, he believes in Pedersen more than anyone. And for him talking about how, you know, he's a lefty, I'm a lefty, I'm going to be, you know, things can be coming my way a lot. Like, he looks how he can be better for him. Like, I like to see how he's trying to figure out how to maximize Pedersen's potential.
Starting point is 00:30:29 And when he gets his game really moving, hopefully after the summer, like a good summer here, how not only does that elevate Pedersen's game, but it can bring him to another level and maybe he hits that 30 mark for the first time and how he's going to have to take a bigger step offensively for this team. You know, the guy's, Jake's just coming off a career high at 28 goals, and yet he knows he's still got to produce more. Like, I like that train of thought coming out of them.
Starting point is 00:31:00 You know, it's been fun to have those guys on, but again with Jake I think the way that he is so good around the net and he knows that but he still thinks that he can bring other parts into his game like that's what makes good players good is that they're always striving to get better I think it's a fairly accurate assessment too based on what we saw last season like you mentioned he's great around the net he's got great hands tipping it finishing it but maybe he could be a little more involved in other areas of the ice. And maybe that includes going and getting some pucks for Pedersen.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Is that what he was getting on? Or did he not really make a suggestion on what specifically he should bring more to? I wouldn't say that he really made like a one direct line of what he needs to be better at. But if you look at him, you know, like goal stores are streaky a bit. like he's trying to find a bit more of that consistency so that those dry spells shorten up a little bit more but you know it's hard moving from from one team where you've been with for so long you know how everything works you know how the guys think so he comes to Vancouver and he's trying to I don't want to say force chemistry rate away but you know we talked about being on
Starting point is 00:32:26 the ice with Quinn Hughes and how like you defer to him every single time and, you know, he brought up an example of, you know, he's coming over the line, he hears Quine yell for it, he just throws it back there, and it's right under the other guy's tape. He's like, you know, like, I got to learn where those opportunities are, but, you know, like, Jake can shoot the puck, too, and he can bring a little bit more distance into his offense. And I agree with you in the sense that, you know,
Starting point is 00:32:56 he can probably get himself involved a little bit more on the forecheck when there's a loose puck off. a rebound or a turnover in the offensive zone. Like all those things, I think, will just come naturally more so to him this year. He's not going to be thinking as much on the ice of, okay, what's this guy doing? What's this guy going to do in this certain situation? I think it'll just become a bit more natural to him where he just let his instinct take over, and that'll make him that little bit quicker, and that'll be, you know, the separator of winning or losing a puck in a corner.
Starting point is 00:33:32 While we're on the topic of, you know, DeBrusk playing with Pedersen and Hughes, I want to talk a bit about the Connect's power play because based on the numbers, it wasn't awful. It was kind of a middle-of-the-road power play. It wasn't the Achilles' heel of the team or anything like that. But it's still, from an eye-test perspective, I don't think it was clicking at the rate that it was. And maybe there was a disconnect in that area. between J.T. Miller and Elias Pedersen, perhaps there were times that, you know, there were times that Rick
Starting point is 00:34:08 Tocke split those two up. So what do you want to see from the Canucks power play this season? Because it just kind of turned into the Quinn Hugh show, and he's a great player, but other guys need to be involved as well.
Starting point is 00:34:23 Totally. And, you know, I think another big factor of the power play struggling for large stretches of the to really find any consistency is the fact that they were switching guys in and out because of all, you know, there's different injuries and things going on like that where, you know, it just, you couldn't find that chemistry. But, you know, I think for this year, not as, like, not so stagnant, like, not getting
Starting point is 00:34:52 stuck in their positions and, okay, I'm the bumper, I'm the left half wall, I'm, I'm the net front, like, where they can start to interchange a little bit more. Right, like Debrusk is really good in front of the net. Kane's a pretty good net front guy as well. Besser's good in the bumper, but you know, you're starting to look at those guys and you're looking to see, okay, who's actually going to take over J.T. Miller's left half wall on that flank. Like Besser, I think, is your best option.
Starting point is 00:35:21 He's the best peer shooter on the team. Start bringing that back in. I know that, you know, a couple years ago, they really tried getting him closer, you know, closer to the net because that's where more of his offense does come from from that middle part of the, middle part of the ice. But if you can get him on that left flank, you have DeBrasc and Kane that can interchange in the middle of the ice through the bumper and net front. Now all of a sudden it's not as easy for the P.K. to just know, okay, well, DeBrusk is here.
Starting point is 00:35:54 He's not moving. We have Pedersen that's not going to move off the right flank. Like it's easy to know because every time you glance, as long as you see your guy there, you know that he's going to be there. If they start getting a bit more movement up top and around the zone, now all of a sudden, Quinn Hughes can do what he does so well in the fact of finding guys as soon as they pop into an opening. And again, like I agree with you, it can't all be Quinn Hughes all the time, but let's be realistic like he is the best player on the ice. He's going to have the puck in his hands a lot. But the more movement there is a round down below him, he'll be able to hit those seams a little bit easier.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Yes, yes. And before you know it, you know, like he throws it from the, you know, if he's walking across the middle of the ice to the right side on the blue line, he can see that seam through, but all of a sudden as soon as that pass goes, maybe that bumper is a little bit more open. Maybe the seam to the back door opens up because a P.K., that second forward panics and runs to the middle of the ice.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Like, all of it is, you know, it all has to work together, but a bit more controlled chaos in a sense. We're speaking to Landon-Farro Canucks Analyst here on the Alford & Brough show on Sportsnet 650. Another one of the recent interview you guys conducted was with the newly minted assistant coach Scott Young. I know you guys talked about building an identity and what the team, wants to do. What specifically did Young have to say about building up the identity that him and
Starting point is 00:37:30 Adam Foote envisioned in Vancouver? Well, a thing that stood out most to me was the fact of, you know, like, yeah, obviously the coaching staff is a massive part of building that identity. But, you know, we said a couple times that we can't be in the room all the time. Like, we need other guys within the room to hold each other accountable, be there for each other, but hold them accountable. It can't come from the coaches all the time and and to me every good team yeah their coach is important but like they can handle the majority of what gets thrown at them themselves because they understand the system they understand what each person's individual role is and then as you get into games and things go haywire a little bit because they do even when you're playing great things go
Starting point is 00:38:21 a little bit off sometimes that they can take care of it themselves and I think that's a big piece right there and it was great having the young on because you can see how much like he is a thinker he wants to give really good answers
Starting point is 00:38:39 and that's how he's going to be in the dressing room too he talks about he likes having one-on-one conversations helping guys out he can handle a full video meeting and all of that but at the same time like he does his best work one-on-one. Having him be able to have those relationships and talk
Starting point is 00:38:58 and really help guys through things, it's only going to help and bolden them as they're in the room by themselves because they understand what they're doing and they understand what the rest of the team's trying to get done. So, again, I think the biggest thing is just really like kind of taking care of business themselves. It doesn't always have to come from the coach.
Starting point is 00:39:19 And when you get stuff like that, like it only brings teams closer together because you don't want to let the guy down next to you, right? Like if he calls you out or if you call someone else out a little bit between periods, like, yeah, you're getting on that guy, but you're also putting yourself in front of the team. And now, like, I need to be ready to go. Now it's bringing everyone really to their top level and holding each other accountable.
Starting point is 00:39:45 Young becomes the new Adam Foote and Adam Foote becomes the new Rick Talk. and there's always an interesting dynamic change when someone goes from being the assistant coach to the head coach. Sometimes we like to joke that you go from being the good cop to now you have to be the bad cop. And it's not a perfect analogy. But in some instances it is
Starting point is 00:40:03 because what you have to do is the head coach. Sometimes you have to make really tough decisions that an assistant doesn't necessarily have to. How do you think foot is prepared to adjust to that? Especially in light of the fact that he knows everything that went wrong with this team last year and part of his job now is to correct that. yeah i mean it's it is a tricky situation in the sense of
Starting point is 00:40:24 you have to change a little bit but i think the best coaches that have moved from assistant to head which is essentially everyone like they don't change their personality too much like just because you've moved from you know the medium-sized desk to the big desk doesn't mean that your personality has to change Yeah, you're going to be more wrapped up in the full team and you're trying to, you have to come up and, you know, really focus on everything that's going on around.
Starting point is 00:40:58 You can't just be focused on one guy or working with, you know, in Foote's case, working with the defense and just really worrying about that core of the group. I think for him, the fact that everyone that, you know, I've talked to when you hear stories and you talk to guys, like he doesn't, he doesn't have to be, the biggest guy in the room. Like he is more than willing to talk and listen to guys.
Starting point is 00:41:24 He wants to hear what they have to say. He knows at the end of the day that it is his call and that he has to make the decision. But I think the biggest thing is just not changing too much. You know, I had Jeff Blaschell in the minors in Detroit system. He's by far my favorite coach I ever played for. He gets to Detroit. And I want to be honest,
Starting point is 00:41:48 like, I think that he tried to be too much of that head coach. And it took him a little bit to realize that, okay, like, I've kind of taken away what the best part of me as a coach was. And I think now he's getting his second chance at Chicago. Like, I think that's what he's really going to bring to his job there. And I see foot doing a lot of that here, but missing that middle portion of, now, okay, now I got to be, I got to be the hard ass in the dress. or am I got to be this, I got to be that.
Starting point is 00:42:20 He's true to himself. He's a guy that's accomplished a ton. He's not unsure of himself. He can be able to just continue on the same way. Yeah, he's going to have to change that tiny little bit. But again, I think the biggest thing is just not changing too much. He should hire an assistant coach. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Hire an assistant coach, that's the hard ass, right? Like a henchman. That's Scott Young. You know what? There's got to be some sort of. of heart. Linole, they got to be, I don't want to say there's got to be some sort of hard ass in there.
Starting point is 00:42:53 That sounds bad. Got to be a better way to say that. There's got to be a better way to say that. It's an interesting dynamic. I'm glad you brought up Blasheel. Do you remember Jason when Blaschell got the job in Detroit? And the first thing that, Jay, we were working at NBC at the time. And the first thing that we pointed out was like, is he trying to sound like Mike
Starting point is 00:43:08 Babcock? Because remember he sounded exactly. He talked exactly like he had the same cadence and the same sort of lines. And I was like, is this intentional or is this just maybe because he's been around him? or is he trying to be? Because that was a tough job to inherit. Like being the guy that was going to take over the job after Babcock was always going to be difficult,
Starting point is 00:43:25 especially with your first head coaching job. But that's interesting that you brought that dynamic up with him because years later now he's finally getting a second chance, maybe doing some things differently than what he did in Detroit. Yeah. And to be honest, again, like I'll say, like he was by far my favorite coach I ever played for. And it was because of the way that he could communicate.
Starting point is 00:43:45 he could be very direct but at the same time you knew that he wasn't asking you to do anything that he didn't and not even just think for him think that you could do it he knew that you could do it like he basically asked me to change my whole game in a sense and looking back like the only reason
Starting point is 00:44:06 I got my games in the NHL was because of that change but like that's a hard conversation to have but he's able to do that in that in that, you know, in that way. But, you know, Adam's foot, when we were talking to him as well, like, I feel like he has that already figured out. Again, like, he's been in so many different situations. He's played in the league forever, plays Olympics.
Starting point is 00:44:32 He's won two cups. Like, he has done all of this. So in a sense, like, he doesn't have to prove anything as much as he does as a head coach year, of course, because he's never been a head coach in the league. But I don't think that he's going to have that same also he doesn't have about six Hall of Famers sitting in the dressing room
Starting point is 00:44:52 that he's taking over for, right? Like Blaschell did in Detroit, but everyone talks about the way that he handles himself around the guys, how he communicates. All of those things are what make him the coach that he is, and I think he really
Starting point is 00:45:08 has to keep leaning into that, not leaning away from it. Landon, this was awesome, man. Thanks for taking the time to do this today. We really appreciate it. Yeah, have a good one, guys. You too, thanks. That's Landon, Ferraro, Canucks analyst,
Starting point is 00:45:20 and the host of the new 100% Caducs podcast with John Shannon here on the Halford & Brough Show on SportsNet, 650. Okay, Moge is coming up next. We'll talk a little BC Lions with him. The Lions are on a buy, and they, frankly, probably need a buy after loss to Hamilton.
Starting point is 00:45:40 They've got to figure some stuff out. defensively. I don't know if that is schemes or personnel or just refocus. But that was a tough way to go into the buy. They had a 10-point lead. Less than three minutes to go. And they end up
Starting point is 00:45:56 losing that game. So we'll talk to Moj about that and we always have some fun, lively conversations with the Moj. Just a reminder to get your ask us anythings into the Dunbar-Lumber text line at 650-650 Metro Vancouver's
