Without injured defensemen and Captain Quinn Hughes in the lineup, things might have appeared grim for your Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night, but no worry. They had key for Sherwood. Sherwood scored his second goal of the game, 142 into 0.2. and the Canucks beat the Oilers 4-3 in overtime at Rogers Arena on Sunday night.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Yeah, what a roller coaster of a weekend on the ice, off the ice. The Canucks last night against the Edmonton Oilers opened the scoring in the first on a nice passing play from Evander Cain to Brock Besser who beat Picker between the legs with a backhand
Starting point is 00:04:12 Deak. New Canuck, Lucas Reichel made a solid defensive play earlier in the shift, so all three linemates contributed on that goal. Demko made 13 savings. in the opening period and he continues to be, I think, their MVP so far. In the second, it was Elias Pedersen, not Elias, Elias Pedersen with a classic PD-1 timer on the power play.
Starting point is 00:04:37 We saw it once during the preseason, we saw it again last night. Hronick had replaced Queen Hughes on PowerPlay 1, and it was Hronick who fed Pedersen for the shot. Interesting. For Pedersen, it was. his fourth point of the weekend after a three-point game Saturday against
Starting point is 00:04:57 Montreal. It is not hard to see. You don't need any analysts, you don't need natural stat trick, you don't need anything like that, you just need your two eyes to see that the confidence is starting to return to Pedersen's
Starting point is 00:05:14 offensive game with the puck on his stick. And it's great to see especially with Tuesday visit from J.T. Miller and the Rangers looming and man, the Rangers did not look good yesterday in Calgary. Miller looked okay, actually.
Starting point is 00:05:30 But the Rangers as a team? The guy's surrounding him. Not good. It's just so nice to see Pedersen wanting the puck on a stick again. He was in control out there with the man advantage. He was the guy. And they needed it. It's been a while since we've seen that
Starting point is 00:05:47 when he's just like, yeah, I I'm going to take the puck and I'm not just going kind of like turn style it off to the next guy. I'm going to do something with it. That was good to see. Now, it looked like the Canucks had made it 3-0 when Kiefer Sherwood ripped one past Pickard, but upon review, Tyler Myers was just offside, so that goal didn't count. And I think we all wondered at the time if that would come back to haunt the Canucks
Starting point is 00:06:13 who had blown, don't forget, a 2-0 lead the night before against Montreal. Once you know it, the Oilers made a 2-1 late in the 6th. second on a breakway by dry sidel it was a perfect long pass from bouchard who's planned edmonton has come under fire this season dry sidle had managed to sneak behind tyler meyers there's that name again not in a good way for the breakway but don't worry about it tyler don't worry about it tyler it's okay kefer sherwood's got this basser by the night's tip pass to center for sherwood nice tow drag around and hold in front he scores you'll see see this one on SportsNit Central tonight.
Starting point is 00:06:54 That was an unbelievable goal by Kiefer Sherwood. Did you know Matias Atcombe aged 10 years on that play? Man, you want to talk about guys that are struggling. Yeah, right. But full credit to Kiefer Shurwood, you know, and I know Dali Wall was somewhere out there saying, you don't think his agent is doing cartwheels? You don't think Team USA is looking at them.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Seriously, Team USA. might be looking at him. Take a shot. And seriously, Sherwood is going to get paid. Who wouldn't want this guy on their team? It was a double whammy for the Canucks to start the third. First, the team announced that Victor Mancini would not return. So he was hurt.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Another injury. Put it on the pile. And by the way, that came. Everyone just kind of noticed Victor Mancini was hurt when they were checking to see that Philip Peronik was okay because he fell awkwardly late in the second. Man, it's just like one thing after another, but fortunately, Heronik was able to stay in there. So first the team announced that Victor Mancini wouldn't return,
Starting point is 00:08:00 and then the tough night for Tyler Myers continued when old teammate Vasili Pod Colson, stripped him of the puck along the boards. You've got to move that puck, Halford. You've got to move it. You've got to move it quickly, especially against a team like the Oilers, and that led to a quick goal by Jack Roselveck. Oh, yeah, he signed there. Not long after that, P.O. Joseph had a great chance to reclaim
Starting point is 00:08:21 name a two-goal lead for the Canucks. Nice pass from Max Sasson, but Calvin Pickard, who was in there, made his biggest save of the night to keep it a one-goal game. And it stayed a one-goal game until just over five minutes left when Marcus Pedersen took a slashing penalty. And the Oilers very quickly bounced, pounced on a leaky Canucks PK after another goal by Dry Settle. assist to who else but Connor McDavid who really made that play happen so for the second straight night the Canucks had surrendered
Starting point is 00:08:55 a 2-0 lead and the PK which is missing some key contributors from last season they're either departed or injured was a factor I wasn't feeling great about the Canucks chances at this point when it went to overtime they got a point
Starting point is 00:09:11 which you know good for them a scenario they probably have taken before the game after they learned that Hughes couldn't play. But there was that guy again, Kiefer Sherwood. Sherwood carries down the wall and leaves for Connor Garland. Garland, top of the zone for Besser left point long. Redshot tip they score.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Kiefer Sherwood. It's his second of the game and team leading sixths of the season. And the Canucks take it in overtime, over the Oilers. Vancouver 4 at Edmonton 3. All right. tons to discuss here so Harry the radiation on call it just
Starting point is 00:09:53 from Calgary texts in must listen radio Bruff's opinions of EP40's play this weekend it was great it was awesome it was awesome
Starting point is 00:10:03 and I told everyone that I'm not a hater I'm just a guy that watches the games and tells people what I think and when Pedersen started playing better I'll be the first to admit it not even admit it just observe it
Starting point is 00:10:16 and then pass it along those words. He's playing better. I'm telling you, the confidence when the puck is on his stick is starting to return. That's always been the issue. You know, I know he blocked another shot last night or another four shots or whatever. You know, and he's up to, I think someone tweeted out that he's first in the NHL among forwards with blocked shots. 22. That's awesome. Yep. He's always been good positionally and defensively. This has never been an issue. He's always, you know, had some hits. and it showed that he does care. It was a confidence issue.
Starting point is 00:10:51 I don't know what happened, but he just lost his confidence. Now he's starting to find it again, which is awesome. I hope it continues. The team desperately, desperately needs him to be at the top of his game. Well, they desperately need it now because they're so depleted by injuries. So the biggest takeaway from me, with all due respect to Elias Pedersen and Kiefer Sherwood. And let's be honest, as gutsy as that team played last night, is that's a win, quite frankly, one you weren't supposed to get.
Starting point is 00:11:20 The odds makers had them as pretty significant underdogs at home. And when you want to consider the circumstances, yeah, it was Edmonton, but it was also an Edmonton team playing the second and back-to-back nights. So it was a gutsy, gutsy performance for a team that was severely underman. This morning, as of this morning, the Canucks have seven players, seven players that would be contributing to this team out with injury right now. Most important, obvious one is Hughes, right? Behind him is Heedel.
Starting point is 00:11:45 You got Mancini, Lecormacki, Forbort, Blugger, Hoglander. That is, for a team that was coming into the year, already kind of iffy with its collective depth, you would have expected that team to possibly flatline. And it looked at times, especially when that blew that second two-goal lead that it might be happening. But I will give them a ton of credit for showing some intestinal fortitude, some testicular fortitude, and getting a win last night under extremely difficult circumstances. because Heronik probably could exit to that game with the injury that he suffered. He fought through it, came back, played through.
Starting point is 00:12:19 They were under manned. They were under siege at times, but they were able to get a result. Now the question is, when are they going to get some of these guys back? Yeah, I don't know how long Hughes is going to be out for. You know, if he's not able to go, you have to know, you have to think it's, you know, not just a hang nail. Sure. And lower body aim, no update after the game. I mean, they're saying day to day.
Starting point is 00:12:42 but their day-to-day could be like week to week. Four-bore was day-to-day, I think, when I was taking it, and now he's week-to-week. Granted, he had a setback in his recovery, but still, I know what you're saying. This is also a guy that did not have the regulator put on him, Quinn Hughes, I'm talking about,
Starting point is 00:12:57 when the minutes came about on this five-game road swing, right? And then when they came back and played that first game of the two against Montreal, Hughes's minutes were never regulated. He was playing big minutes. I think he got up to one game on that five-game road trip that almost eclips 30 minutes, which is for you athletes out there,
Starting point is 00:13:12 the hockey game. Yeah. There's so many things I want to discuss. But I think I want to start with. It's not like, it's, I was almost proud of the Canucks last night. No, seriously. So beautiful. No, seriously.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Like, it was, it was, it was the, like, I'm always hoping they succeed. But it was the first time I was on the edge of my seat kind of like, come on guys. Like, come on. this done you guys deserve this like get get this done um you know and i was and when they took that late penalty and marcus peterson a bit of a reckless slash and i was like oh no the pk like the pk is missing some key guys you know blugers hurt um forbort four bort's hurt and then they don't have pew suitor and they don't have decoder joshua all four of those guys were a big part of the PK last year, which finished the season so impressively.
Starting point is 00:14:16 So I was kind of worried about the PK coming in, and then Montreal's power play looked really good and burned them a few times. And, you know, Edmonton's power play is, I don't even know what it rates right now, but it's one of the best in the NHL with that talent out there. So that was tough when they surrendered the lead, because it meant, you know, for the second straight game over the weekend, they'd had a 2-0 lead. and they weren't going to win in regulation. They didn't, I mean, they lost the regulation of Montreal.
Starting point is 00:14:49 So I was just like, come on, guys, you deserve better than another loss because you have come together as a group without your captain, and you played really well. And what do we want when key players get injured? We want other guys to step up. Next man up mentality. And Kiefer Sherwood. has stepped up.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Elias Pedersen has stepped up. We got a new kid in there, Lucas Reichel, who I think has played quite well considering the circumstances. And then even just go back to Philip Peronik falling and looking injured.
Starting point is 00:15:30 And we all know that he's had issues with his shoulder and it looked again like he had issues with his shoulder. He wasn't coming out of that game. And I think that was, that showed something, right? those guys came together in a situation where they knew, man, we can't lose this one
Starting point is 00:15:47 because we're four and five. I mean, they've, I don't know if five and five is a good record considering the situation for the Canucks or not. I know it's not. I would say, I would say it's a good, I would say it's a good record considering the situation with all the injuries
Starting point is 00:16:03 that they've been going through and all the stress that they've been going through. And they spent half the season on the road. Yes. And even when they come home, they're like, how about it back to back? Right away, you know? Yeah, yeah. Like, the schedule has been tough.
Starting point is 00:16:16 So, you know, I would just say that that was a really good win for the Canucks in it. And I hope they can keep it going because if they can be the Rangers on Tuesday, I know things, it's not like, and we're through it, right? They won't be through it because they're immediately out on the road again without much, without March rest. So, like, it could get hard. But I think all we want, and we've said it so many times. You know, the most important thing, honestly, like, at the end of the day, I've seen good teams
Starting point is 00:16:47 and I've seen bad teams with the Canucks. Like, I just want them, just want them to play hard, you know, and act like they're trying their best and win and all cheer for them. It's when things happen like last season, when they're totally dysfunctional and they're fighting among themselves to the point where, you know, one of them has to be traded. that's when I grow a bit of like, hey, what am I doing? Why am I cheering for these guys? And last night, it was just really nice to have that experience of like,
Starting point is 00:17:18 come on, guys, like, let's get a win here. So as depleted as the Canucks are and as valiantly as they rallied last night, it still stands to reason that there might be some transactions on the horizon as it pertains to this hockey club. We saw one on Friday, not long after we got off the air, and I know it's been pretty parsed through on this station, Sportsnet 650, but it's still. still news to us. The Lucas Reichael Trig went down in case you did somehow miss it.
Starting point is 00:17:43 It was a fourth round pick in 27 in exchange to Chicago for the Young Forward. That was obviously previous acquired by the Canucks so they get their own pick back. Reichel then played 1552 in his debut against Montreal. Then he played 1633 last night against Edmonton. So no rest for the guy. The newcomer to the team gets thrown into the mix right away, plays pretty significant minutes. and the Canucks might not be done dealing right there because one of the stories that came to the forefront this weekend
Starting point is 00:18:13 was the Canucks continued interest in Pavel Zaka. So to set the stage here for some audio from Elliot Friedman from the 32 Thoughts podcast, Dollywall brought this up, if I'm not mistaken on our show, but on other platforms as well last week, talking about this ongoing interest that the Vancouver Canucks have had in Pavel Zaka.
Starting point is 00:18:31 For further detail and color to the story, here's Frege filling in the margins. This is Elliot Friedman from the 32 Thoughts podcast on Pavel Zaka. So Rick Dahlwall, who I have a ton of respect for, Rick's a grinder. And I say that to me, that's the ultimate compliment in the job that we do. So I heard that, so he reported last week that the Canucks had called a vote Zaka. I think that's been going on all summer. all summer.
Starting point is 00:19:08 And they've been trying to go back and forth. And I think there's a couple things at play here. Number one, I don't think Boston feels that they're in any rush. They're still competing. You know, Boston is not a team that's throwing in the towel by any stretch of the imagination. Um, they had a big win against, uh, Colorado on Saturday. And boy, watching McKinnon and McAvoy go out at the end of that, you know, like, I love that. Two hugely important players for their teams, like fighting like that at the end of a game.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Like, it matters. That says it matters. But, you know, everybody here is looking for centers. Everybody wants centers. Um, Boston's got a guy here that Vancouver and others have called. about and the Bruins are like, no, we have, we don't have to do this and we're not going to do this unless we get what we want. And so obviously at this point, nothing's happened. Zaka's got an A team, no trade. I understand that Vancouver is not on it. So the Canucks could,
Starting point is 00:20:25 in theory, do this. Okay. So we all get the interest in Zaka from the Canucks perspective. And we can have a conversation, if you want, about whether the connects should be how willing they should be to throw in some prospects, whether it be Lecker-Mackie or V-Lander or even unprotected first-round pick for this year, which would be insane. I love it. You are an idiot. I love to gamble. But here's what I don't get. What are the Bruins thinking here? If I were them, I'd be wanted.
Starting point is 00:21:04 an absolute king's ransom for this guy, given the lack of center options on the trade market and his team-friendly cap-pit. We saw another team that needs a second-line center and the Montreal Canadiens, right? I mean, that's a team that's clearly out there looking for another center. I was reading a Boston Globe article
Starting point is 00:21:27 where they listed, they were talking about this Zaka speculation, and they listed Marcus Pedersen as the most likely trade target for the Bruins because Hampus Lindholm is injured. Yeah, they just put them on IR. But I'm like Pedersen Marcus just signed an extension in Vancouver and he's got a full no move clause.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Yeah, and they need them here. Right? He was part of fixing the defense. I guess maybe I just don't understand where the Bruins are at right now. I know they had a big losing streak, but they've also got guys like Posternak and McAvoy and, you know, Swainman, like, what, are they rebuilding after 10 games or whatever?
Starting point is 00:22:07 Or are they still trying to compete? And I guess that's where the whole, like, they know they don't have to do anything right now. I mean, why not, they could just wait to the trade deadline, couldn't they? Yeah, if you look at the standings right now, they've had almost as disappointing start as New York Rangers standing-wise. I mean, they're right down there in terms of, I mean, they've got four wins to the Rangers, too, but they're still on eight points. They haven't had anything in over it. They just haven't played well to start the year, but it's 10 games in. And I think Friege's positioning of where they're at and they're fighting spirit and in a literal sense with McAvoy going toe to toe with McKinnon over the weekend, I think that's maybe him saying, this is the vibe that I'm getting out of Boston, that they are not about to give away, who's a pretty important player for them, by the way, Zaka's almost a pointy game guy.
Starting point is 00:22:53 This year plays a lot. He's 6'4. He's over 200 pounds, so he's a pretty vital contributor to what they do. So never mind giving him away, giving him away in a market. where there's no centers available. Like Lucas Reichael was it prior. The Connucks already got the other guy that was, I mean, there's other players available. Don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 00:23:09 But it's a thin market, and the Canucks already snapped up one of the guys that was out there to play the position. I understand why there is a push in Vancouver right now and why this might have gotten heated back up. And I suspect that at some point we're going to get news on Philippeal's playing future, and it might not be all that optimistic.
Starting point is 00:23:30 and it might be the reason why they went out and orchestrated kind of a Band-Aid trade with Reichel that was literally get someone in after the road trip kind of trade right get someone now they can play now what did it say that I know Lucas Reichel has pedigree but what does it say that
Starting point is 00:23:46 all he cost was a fourth round draft pick so I think Chicago was in a position where like we don't want this guy on the team we're going to put him on waivers soon we're going to try and send him back to the HL and And because Chicago's got a kind of a decent thing going, relatively speaking.
Starting point is 00:24:05 He couldn't get a top six spot. Yeah, yeah. And then he wasn't really suited for the bottom six. At least that's the way. Anyway, there wasn't a spot for him. So they were like, okay, we got to get anything we can for him. So they got a fourth round pick. What did it say for the Canucks, their desperation level, where he did one of those things
Starting point is 00:24:25 where he's like flying to Vancouver and his flight lands? And it's like, okay, you're going into the game right now. Do you know the system? It doesn't matter. Just go in there and play with your instincts. You're playing 16 minutes. I mean, this is a guy that, again, like, was having trouble in Chicago finding his spot. And the Canucks were forcing him into the lineup.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Yeah. And it's reflective of where they're at. And again, with seven guys currently injured right now, this is going to be another week where there's going to be patchwork lineups and probably a lot more conversations like this, where the Canucks are looking to acquire guys. Quite honestly, just the play. Okay, we got to go to break. We got a lot more to get into on the program. We'll try and go as local as we can,
Starting point is 00:25:07 but it was a very, very busy weekend for the Vancouver Canucks, so you understand why it's eating up the lion's share of the show so far. I feel like we've got it at about 3% of the storylines from the Canucks. And then there's, it's like, oh yeah, the World Series is on. That is also a thing. Game three goes tonight. We're going to air it right here on Sports 9-650. And the Lions clinched a playoff spot in the White
Starting point is 00:25:27 It kept won a playoff game quite handily. And there was NFL and there's other NHL stories. So we'll try and get to all this on the other side of the break. Our first guest isn't until 7 o'clock this morning. So it's another half hour of uninterrupted Halford-enbruff. You're listening to the Halford-Inbuff show on Sportsnet, 650. Starting point is 00:27:11 on this show, it's like, and in the World Series, Texas is playing or something? I don't know. We announced the winner after when it's done. Also, they gave out the World Series trophy last night. Rob Manfred was there, two teams played. It was fun for everybody. It's like America with the Stanley Cup.
Starting point is 00:27:26 The one time they talked about. hockey. It's like, oh, they ordered the cup yesterday, some trophy up there. Yep, and everyone had fun. And it was a good time. The other reason that we have such a wide array of sports to speak about right now is because in a rare twist of fate for this city, our local sporting squadrons are kind of on fire. I want to begin with the one that is actually in the playoffs right now. That is your Vancouver Whitecaps who yesterday in front of 32,000 people at BC Place setting an MLS era regular season and postseason attendance record they absolutely ripped apart FC Dallas 3-0 in the first of that best of three series and you watched from a sweet
Starting point is 00:28:33 a field level suite I was in field level I was actually in the club seats in the field level part laity da did you talk about your hedge fund I did I asked what one was how do I get one did you throw food to the less people
Starting point is 00:28:50 behind me yeah the less people here you go pours. Here's some pizza crust. Please do not throw popcorn out the other people. They're eating it. Okay, keep doing it. I also got to watch the Vancouver Whitecaps out shoot attempt.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Out attempt Dallas 22 to nothing. That was pure domination. It was about as dominant as you can get into 3-0 victory. It should have been 3-0 at the half. They ticked every single box you could want the Vancouver White Caps did yesterday.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Again, in front of 32,000 people, the energy was really high in the building. It was about as emphatic as you could beat someone. I watched audio or sorry, I watched video of the FC Dallas gaffer after the match. And he's like, we were not in that match. He was like, ooh, they're going to win. He's like, we did not. The stats are very reflective of the fact that we did nothing today, nothing today. Who is the best player for the white caps, do you think?
Starting point is 00:29:49 It's a long list. Yesterday? Yesterday, there were a lot of candidates. I love Sabi. Emmanuel Sabi was very good and very low-key. The kids like to say low-key, kind of a disappointment in the first half because he missed a ton of chances. But the upside of that was he was creating and was on the end of a lot of these chances. And then he earned a second consecutive match against Dallas where he drew a penalty.
Starting point is 00:30:10 And then Mulder takes the ball. He's like, I will finish this. Thank you. He did, of course. That was the two-nill goal. You've done all the hard work and now I will get the glory. He scored so many penalties now. And he's got nine goals and nine matches since joining the White Calf.
Starting point is 00:30:23 many are off penalty, he's like seven or eight? Six or seven, I think, yeah. But he's been great. The team is, again, there's a long road to go. And with all due respect to FC Dallas, the competition gets a lot more fierce as you go along in this thing. The first round of the MLS
Starting point is 00:30:38 playoffs, there's some teams, like the White Caps last year, who were in it, but not really like, and I'm using air quotes here, like, in it. Like, they're not a, they weren't a contender last year. They were in the playoff field, but they weren't going to win. This year, they absolutely have a chance to win the MLS Cup. Okay, let's suppose that the white caps get past Dallas.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Sure. Okay. Now, I know they don't have the number one seat in the conference. And San Diego won last night against Portland. They got the number one seed. Do you think at some point they could sell out BC place for one of these home games, though? I think so. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:11 I think so, too. The Upper Bowl yesterday was like an eighth filled. It looked as though they strategically sold tickets that would appear on TV, right? Yeah, yeah. When you had the camera, wide-angle camera shot. Look good, though. Look great. Look good.
Starting point is 00:31:24 With the flags and everything else. If they were to play L-AFC in the next round with all of the star power that Lafc has, including Son, who came over from Tottenham mid-season and has been electric for them, I wonder if sellout is, I mean, that's messy caliber draw. Yeah. But could you eclipse 40,000? Could you get to 45? Where can this thing go? Because the people, here's the thing. 32,000 went yesterday.
Starting point is 00:31:51 32,000 got to see a show Like it was not a dour If it was funny One of the people I was talking to Pitchside One of the people I was talking to Was like well They've had a good team in the past
Starting point is 00:32:04 In 2015 when Robbo was here They finished third in the watch It's not the same I'm like it play a completely different style It's called entertaining Robbo went into that kind of match Looking for a nil nill draw Like let's just you know
Starting point is 00:32:15 And I know it was a different set of circumstances And I know it was home and away And there was two legs And there was goal aggregate get to worry about. But this team just plays such an attractive, attacking, relentless style. And it's very cool now because this weekend, we got a playoff game at BC Place. And next weekend, we're also going to get a playoff game at BC Place because the Lions beat the Rough Riders in Saskatchewan on Saturday, guaranteeing that next weekend, Saturday, November 1st at
Starting point is 00:32:42 2.30, they are going to host the Western semifinal against the Calgary Stampeders. Yeah. And what a turnaround it's been for the BC Lions. You know, a month and a half ago, I never would have thought they'd be able to host a playoff game. Honestly, I was looking, there was actually a time when I was like, are they going to miss? Could they possibly miss the playoffs? It was a possibility. And then you're kind of like, well, they probably won't miss, but they'll probably have to go to the crossover and go play Toronto or something or whatever. You know, I don't know what the standings in the East are.
Starting point is 00:33:17 Montreal or something. and then well maybe they can finish third in the division and then they just everything came together the offense continues to click
Starting point is 00:33:29 and I mean the key is the defense the defense was horrific for much of the season they made some personnel changes and credit to the management group that went out there and made the changes and I'm sure they coached them up a little bit yada yada yada
Starting point is 00:33:47 they go to Regina and I think this game might have actually been a little tougher than some people expected because the rough riders you know played a few other start like Trevor Trevor Harris started the game yeah you got right early in the second quarter he got lifted and then it was kind of like uh-oh are they going to go into Saskatchew and blow this because that would be disappointing but they got the job done they did not blow it at the end of the day um so look we're going to park the white caps and lions talk for now we're not forgetting about them
Starting point is 00:34:19 but their games are later you know like the when's the next white caps game is it Friday Saturday okay so it'll be so they play in Dallas on Saturday and I believe that one's at 630 so if you wanted to do some high have a watch party started with the Lions
Starting point is 00:34:35 against the stamps at 2.30 or get your tickets go to BCLions.com get tickets to that western semi-final by the way it's going to be Winnipeg in Montreal and the eastern final in Montreal and then after that on what's going to be a loaded, loaded Saturday night. You've got the white caps who could close out the business against FC Dallas.
Starting point is 00:34:53 You know what else would be Saturday night, too? If it goes, game seven of the World Series. All right, well, let's talk about this World Series because the Jays got off to a great start winning game one, and that was something that we talked about last week. You know, put a scare into these Dodgers. They did.
Starting point is 00:35:10 And it was a great night for everyone that was at Rogers Center and cheering on the Jays across the country. Game two things got a lot. little more real. They did not put a scare into Yoshinobu Yamamoto. That was the problem. They did it to Blake Snell. They could not do it to Yamamoto. That guy's delivery
Starting point is 00:35:25 looks like he's throwing knuckle balls. It is wild. Wild what he has done over his last two starts. Yeah. There might not be a better pitcher in baseball right now than Yamamoto. His performance against the Jays, a four-hitter,
Starting point is 00:35:41 his second consecutive complete game. So for the many of you that didn't watch the NLCS, Yamamoto, also did this to the brewers where he was virtually unhittable and went the distance. Don't you think, though, he looks like he's throwing batting practice. Yes. With his delivery, he's like, I'm going to put one there. Well, I think part of the reason is that he's got such a variety of pitches.
Starting point is 00:36:03 Yeah. Right. So. That was a terrific, terrific performance. And no wonder he was able to throw, like, by the way, when someone does like a complete game now, has a complete game, it's like, what a miracle. He stayed in there the whole time. We haven't seen this in decades. We haven't.
Starting point is 00:36:17 We haven't seen anyone throw a complete game in the World Series since 2015. We haven't seen anyone throw back-to-back consecutive games in the playoffs since Kurt Schilling did it in 2001 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. To give you an idea of how good, Yamamoto is a six-pitch guy, which is crazy. Like, it's very hard to master six pitches to be able to throw them at the major league level. So he went 34 splitters, 25 fastballs. And by the way, his fastball throughout the game was averaging 96.
Starting point is 00:36:47 At the end, he was still throwing 96. And he got a couple guys with his fastball to go down not looking, or to go down looking. And it's because they were like, okay, which pitch of fastball I'm out. Yeah, he paints it too. It's right on the outside corner. 23 curveballs, 13 cutters, six sliders, four sinkers. 17 swings and misses.
Starting point is 00:37:10 At one point, he and by the way, this I almost feel bad because Kevin Gossman, prior to giving up the two home runs late, was also having an unbelievable outing. He retired 17 straight batters in that game, and it's a footnote, a footnote to that story because Yamamoto was that good. Okay, so they go to L.A. now for games 3, 4, and 5.
Starting point is 00:37:32 It's a 2-3-2, just in case you didn't know that. Is there a goal now just get back to Toronto? Win one game. Win one game in L.A. Just cut back to Toronto. One game in L.A. And hope to do the same thing you did against the Mariners, which is win game six and seven
Starting point is 00:37:49 at home. I think it's just to stay alive at that point. Like, if you go back Because the pitching matchups in games three and four do not favor the Jays. None of the pitching matchups favor the Jays. I don't think. I don't think there's one. Maybe, maybe if Snell is suffering from some sort of confidence issue now after getting roughed around in game one, maybe. But
Starting point is 00:38:08 like you go back to Toronto. Let's say they win a game in L.A. You go back to Toronto. You got to go up against Yamamoto again. And that would probably be a gospel right and this is savage game five again like you savage wasn't great in game one but it didn't matter because the jays put up the offense that they did you could not complain about anything that gossman did yesterday gospelman pitch or sorry on on saturday gossipen pitched brilliantly just at the end gave up a couple dingers and that was like more than enough insurance for yamamoto because he was not getting touched after that first inning if they can win a game and i don't know who the thing is
Starting point is 00:38:42 is like you look at this Dodgers rotation. Tyler Glass now has a minuscule ERA. He's pitched great. So let's say you're like, okay, we got another really good arm tonight. Maybe that's going to be a tough go. Oh, who's on the hill after that? It's Shohei Otani,
Starting point is 00:38:56 who struck out 10 in a closing game against the Brewers when they closed out the NLCS. So it's a very tall order all of a sudden. How would you power rank the Dodgers pitchers? Well, right now Yamamoto's one. One? Yeah. I mean, and that's just in current form.
Starting point is 00:39:11 It's interesting. I talked to a couple different people that follow baseball closer than I do. They said, like, ceiling-wise, in terms of stuff, it's probably Otani, but he doesn't have, I mean, quite frankly, he doesn't have the pitching experience is snow and glass now because he hasn't done it with the regularity. So maybe there's something to explain there. But the other part of it is like a lot of guys haven't faced Otani. So it's not, so you've got the added thing of like, oh, I'm seeing some of these guys are like, I've seen him for the first time, right, on the bomb, which is what the Yassavage. That was the advantage. That was part of the advantage.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Part of the advantage was like guys haven't seen him. Now his problem was he couldn't find the zone with regularity. So look, it's a tall order. What the Jays did in game one was very impressive. And I don't want to say it like it gave the Jays fans something from this series because it's completely far from over. But the pitching is so good, so good on the Dodgers side of things. And then if you want to look at recent history,
Starting point is 00:40:10 they silence the Phillies back. And the Phillies had big, powerful bats that were supposed to be able to have that one swing power. They absolutely neutralized Milwaukee who had more of a let's generate offense approach. We're not going to rely on the home runs. We're going to try and grind out runs. Neither approach worked. And you know why? Because their pitching staff is elite.
Starting point is 00:40:29 They've got four bona fide number one starters and it's a scary thing. We got a text into the Dunbar Lumber text line. If you have any thoughts or questions, text them in. Starting point is 00:40:52 What do we think of the Oilers last night? Well, I watched them on Saturday night as well, just to put a full scope, not just take one game. I watched them down in Seattle, 3-2 loss, where they kind of looked like they did last night, sort of flat, sort of unengaged, sort of uninspired, by sort of, I mean, really? I, they've got a lot of passengers.
Starting point is 00:41:14 They've got McDavid, dry-siddle, and then a lot of guys that feel like they're along for the ride right now. Let's go back to our conversation about before McDavid signed his whopping two-year extension, which wasn't exactly a vote of confidence, I don't think, for the current roster and the future roster. He's like, I'm here, but maybe not for all that long. We talked about the players like, you know, Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Zach Hyman.
Starting point is 00:41:41 who have been really good players for them but are now getting into their 30s and you wonder how many years they've got left. And the case of Hyman, he's not even there. And we watched Matias at Combe yesterday and, you know, he's struggling. He old. Like he is not a young defenseman anymore.
Starting point is 00:42:00 And he looked old on that goal by Kiefer Shirtwood, which was a great toe drag, but Kiefer Shirtwood shouldn't be able to tow track around. Like that was he beat him so badly. It looked like he wasn't even in the point. It kind of wasn't. And then you go, okay, well, what did they need to happen this year?
Starting point is 00:42:17 Well, they needed some of their young kids to hit Matt Savoy and Isaac Howard, who they got from Tampa Bay in a trade. Both those guys were acquired in a trade, right? Yep. Yeah. So they needed those guys to show something. Well, they've showed something, and what they've showed is they're not ready for the NHL yet. Nope. So, you know, you look at their winger.
Starting point is 00:42:41 and you could, like Nuge is a winger now, so he's their best winger. Who's their second best winger? Without Hyman. Who is it? Podgolson. I don't even, maybe. Mangiopani? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:42:52 Maybe. Maybe, like, Roslovick, I know, everyone's like, he's a center, but he's been playing the wing, I think. He scored his first goal last night. So, like, they are very thin on the wings. And, and look, say what you will about Evander Cain. I know he's got some fans in Vancouver. and others that are not fans.
Starting point is 00:43:13 But when he first joined the Oilers, he was still in his prime. He was a difference maker for them. And he was a good player. And there were times, I mean, look, I thought he played a good game last night. You know, a great pass to Bessor, and that line with Reichel might have some chemistry there
Starting point is 00:43:32 because, you know, Cain doesn't skate like he used to. Brock Bessor has never skated particularly well. The one thing that Lucas Reichel is really, really good at, is skating. So maybe that line has a combination. But back to the Oilers, like you lose cane and you don't really replace them. And all of a sudden you're looking at this roster
Starting point is 00:43:52 and going, well, they're really thin on the wings. And they probably need to bring in another defenseman now. I don't know how they're going to do it. I don't know. I mean, here's the thing. The Oilers have done this before, have gotten up to very slow starts to the season where you're like, is this going to be the end?
Starting point is 00:44:07 And they always find a way to rebound because they've got McDavid and Dry Settle. Yeah. You know, I mean, they got Jay Woodcroft fired and they were able to rebound from that. Maybe they just need to fire Chris Knoblock. I don't know. But I don't think so. I think there's a personnel issue. It's a personal hand is. I mean, I would be, I'd be concerned because the McDavid contract situation makes this more imperative than maybe in years past. In years past, you can kind of sit back and be like, ah, they'll figure it out. They'll get it sorted. Plenty of time. But there is a ticking. I mean, it's a stopwatch in a lot of ways. Like, it's a two-year stopwatch. There's a stopwatch with McDavid now where it feels like the pressure around almost every single game gets ratcheted up ever so slightly because there's a finite time on it.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Like he needs to win and I know it's a three-year window, right? It's this year and the next two, but there's a real impetus now to win now. And I'll give you like you're exactly right. It feels like in a time where they need to win now, the personnel's in a different space. A lot of these guys are not in a win now mode age-wise and health-wise. They're either too old or too young. And that's going to be a problem for them moving forward, I think. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Our one almost assent, well, it is in the books now. We got a lot more to get to on the Halford and Breft Show on SportsNet 650, including all of our guests on the program. Mike Tanyar is going to join us at 7. We have not talked to any NFL yet. So we'll do that for about 10 or 15 minutes with Mike on the other side of the break. There's a lot to get into there. 730, Kevin Woodley from NHL.com and Ingole magazine is going to join the program.
Starting point is 00:45:37 We can talk to Kev about everything that went on with the Vancouver Connects this week. And then, of course, what's to come on Tuesday? Because maybe the biggest game of the year, maybe the biggest game of the year for these Vancouver Canucks is tomorrow when they will take on J.T. Miller and the floundering New York Rangers who just came up, 5-1 whipping in Calgary. A phrase you don't hear that often. They lost badly to Calgary.
Starting point is 00:46:01 Calgary looked very motivated in that game. They played well. I don't know what the Rangers looked like, but it wasn't good. So we'll talk to Kev about all that at 7.30. And then at 8 o'clock, we are going to do more baseball. talk. Ben Shulman is going to join the program. That's right. Son of Dan Shulman, radio play by play for the Toronto Blue Jays on Fan 590. We will set up game three of the world series, which goes tonight. And a reminder, you can hear all of game three of the world series between
Starting point is 00:46:27 the Dodgers and the Blue Jays right here on Sportsnet 650 beginning at 5 p.m. We got a lot more to get into. Our one is in the books. You're listening to the Halford and Brough Show on Sportsnet, 650.
