It's AJ from AJ's pizza here on the health for the brush show on sports net
six 15 for those regular listeners of the program.
You'll know that AJ has not been on his usual Friday hit with us over the last
couple of weeks. Um, a tragedy befell the AJ's family, uh, from the tragic bus accident at Horseshoe Bay from last couple of weeks. A tragedy befell the AJ's family from the
tragic bus accident at Horseshoe Bay from a couple of weeks ago. So AJ has taken some
time. There's a lot going on in his world. He joins us now. And I just wanted to open
things up to you, J.B. saying, you know, from all of us at the show, we're tremendously
sorry for everybody that was impacted from this truly tragic event. And I just wanted
to turn the sort of microphone over to you and let you speak
and say whatever you need to say, given we haven't talked to you in a couple of
weeks.
Like going to make me cry right away. Sorry. That's okay.
Um, you know, I, I, it has been, it's been,
it's been a rough one. You know, oh man.
You know, I think some of the beauty of this tragic thing
that happened is that it shows how wonderful community is.
Right? I didn't realize I'd be so emotional. My apologies.
No, don't apologize.
You know, I think as, you know, tragic things, sadly happen every day, right?
They happen every second, you know,
but the outpouring of compassion and love
and care has been amazing.
Many of us on the show have children
and it's the unfathomable, right? You
know, and thankfully my wife, Teresa, my business partner has been a rock and has supported
and helped the family. You guys have been amazing. Our funny texts, I get to text you guys during the hockey games
and it kind of adds levity to it. Yeah, yeah, thank you guys. You know, yeah, it's been
an interesting goal, but you know what, you know, it has restored my faith in humanity in a way if that makes sense
because people have just been so compassionate. And I mean we've seen it
play out and I know on behalf of Jason and myself and Andy and Greg like what
you guys have done through the AJ's family and helping the family go through
as you said just an unfathomable time with the GoFundMe
and all of the support and awareness and fundraisers
that you've done on social media and the community.
I know the restaurant and the place is more than just
a place to go eat pizza and drink beer.
It's a place where people gather and there's family
and there's a community aspect.
Yeah, for sure.
I wanna thank you for taking the time
to do this this morning, man.
I know this was tough and I know you've been away for a couple weeks.
Yeah, I know.
And I thank you guys.
I thank you guys and thank you so much for your love and support and care.
And I'm glad he just so you know the Blue Jays still suck.
Thanks AJ.
You still got it.
Hey, second best record in baseball.
There's always some silver lining with AJ. That's the last 14. You still got it. Hey, second best record in baseball.
There's always some silver lining with AJ.
That's the best part.
And we're still giving away a $100 gift card to AJ's Pizza
on East Broadway today.
And you can go check them out this weekend
and support everything that they are doing for fans
and family and community.
And hey, thank you guys.
Love you guys and much appreciate it.
Love you, buddy.
Have a good weekend, OK?
Take care. Yeah, you too. Yeah, that's from appreciate it. Love you buddy. Have a good weekend.
Okay.
Take care.
Yeah, you too.
Yep.
That's from AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
Go visit whatever social media channels that you can.
You'll find links to the GoFundMe for the family.
That was again, it was just an absolute tragedy.
What happened in Horseshoe Bay a couple of weeks ago and AJ and Teresa and everyone involved
in the restaurant and the community and their family have done yeoman's work and trying to help out and
do what they can and we're trying to do all our small part as well.
We do have an open segment here on the Halford and Brough show on sports net 650.
Always a difficult pivot after something that emotional,
but kind of befitting because we are going to do ask us anything today.
And at the end of the show,
the best ask us anything is going to receive a $100
gift card to AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
So you can go and check out the restaurant, the new side of the restaurant and add to
the level of community and family that they've got going there.
You got any flag for us here?
Yeah.
Ash from Surrey asked us anything, would you rather have tickets to any Stanley Cup Final
Game 7 or Super Bowl tickets? Stanley Cup final game seven or Super Bowl tickets.
Stanley Cup final game seven.
I have to admit, I've never been to a Super Bowl.
Seven Super Bowl tickets, that's a lot.
No, what?
Is it?
No, no, no, it's just any Stanley Cup final game seven.
Oh, I thought the, oh, okay.
Sorry, that was seven Super Bowl tickets.
No.
No.
Any Stanley Cup final game seven or Super Bowl tickets. But the thing is, you get seven Super Bowl tickets. No, no any Final game seven or Super Bowl tickets, but the thing is you get the Super Bowl tickets every year
But you'd only go to the Stanley Cup final if there was a game seven
I think I'd still take the Stanley Cup final game seven. Oh, that's a tough one. I
Think it's got the Super Bowl is its own inherent game seven
you got to run the risk of But the Super Bowl is its own inherent game seven.
You gotta run the risk of, like I have to admit, I've been thinking about,
This one is making me too confused.
I've got to find him.
If there's a game seven in Edmonton,
I feel like I've gotta find my way there.
I think you kinda have to.
Somehow, if I can get a press pass.
The theater of a second consecutive game seven,
after what happened last year.
It'd be one of the biggest games in Stanley Cup
final history.
Yes, it would.
Like ever.
And we're talking about a terrific series,
plus the history of the Canadian drought.
I mean that's-
David's legacy.
Yeah.
The backstory is always so important.
I talk about 94 as being this great series and people like, yeah,
cause the Canucks are in it.
Like, no, the Canucks were, for us, they were the main story.
For everyone else, the Rangers were the story and they had the drought,
the 54 year drought.
And it kind of looked like they were going to blow it because they were up
three, one, the Canucks go in and they take game five and then they come back drought and it kind of looked like they were going to blow it because they were up 3-1,
the Canucks go in and they take game five and then they come back and they take game
six.
So it's for all the marbles, game seven and Rangers fans have that feeling of, uh-oh,
like, are we going to blow this thing?
And if this series gets to game seven, I mean,
Canucks Bruins was a big, big deal.
Yep.
This is going to be bigger.
That'll be bigger.
This is going to be bigger.
Don't kill us.
Okay?
Yeah.
Don't like we're just saying.
I know there's the history of the Canucks
having never won the Stanley Cup, but we've
got the Canadian drought, which affects the
whole country.
We've got, if you want to bring this in, some
people will talk about it, you know, Connor
McDavid's legacy, although he's still in his
twenties, I don't know if we should be talking
about his legacy quite yet.
But he, but he, okay, but just to jump in there
though, like his legacy, I don't want to say
kind of gets defined, but it kind of does get
defined by what happens here.
Because if you go to the summit, you go to the
game seven, two times in a row.
I mean, that's unspeakable in terms of disappointment.
You know, all these people texting and say, I would sell the Superbowl tickets.
Yeah.
Live your life for once.
It's not all about money.
It's worth bringing it up.
It's worth mentioning.
All right, fair enough.
I did think about it.
It's worth mentioning it.
It's like, well, wait a minute.
You go to one Super Bowl, you tick that box.
We should have said you can't sell them, you have to go.
You have to go to the Super Bowl, but it's a very good question.
Okay. All right. Let's talk about the Calder Cup, because that starts
tonight down in Charlotte at Bow Jangle's Coliseum.
Is everyone familiar with Bows?
Wait, it's actually called Bow Jangle's? You gotta go to Bows. Yeah. Is everyone familiar with Bo's? Wait, it's actually called Bojangles?
You gotta go to Bo's.
Yeah.
Are you familiar with Bojangles?
No.
Well, I mean, no.
In a lot of the Southern United States,
there's a fast food chain called Bojangles.
Oh, okay.
There's a very famous commercial from the early 2000s
where Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake DeLome and Steve Smith,
the wide receiver, are driving around in the,
what was the Duke's Hazard car again?
Uh.
The General Lee.
The General Lee.
Yeah, they're driving around in one.
Yeah.
It's about as Southern redneck as you can get in a commercial.
Do you know the General Lee got canceled?
Yeah.
See, this shows the time.
He's off Twitter. It was a different time. Generally, the General Lee car canceled. Yeah, see, this shows the time. He's off. He's off Twitter.
It was a different time.
Generally, the General League car was OK back then.
Anyway, they're driving around.
It's a really low budget commercial.
But I've been so I've been to Bojangles before.
I was I took a flight during the 2016 Stanley Cup final
because I used to hate early flights.
I would do anything I could to avoid them.
And one of them involved with
a stopover at the Charlotte Airport which someone astutely pointed out to me
afterwards like you're going backwards like you're not even going close to your
destination like this flight plan that you're on to try and get to San Jose is
going backwards but anyway I was in Charlotte and Charlotte's got a lot of
Bojangles there so hey Mr. Bojangles! Mr. Bojangles!
You know what?
Food wasn't bad.
It was OK.
Yeah.
You would assume that they have a Bojangles in the Bojangles Rita?
You'd think they would.
I mean, I would hope.
Yeah.
Anyway, it's mostly just...
It's fried chicken, isn't it?
It's Cajun fried chicken.
It's good.
Sounds good.
Let's get to the team.
Who is on?
Because the Charlotte checkers have rolled for the most part through these playoffs now They didn't have to play the opening series the first but they've only played they've only played 12 games
So get to the Calder Cup final
So when they first started the Canucks of Abbotsford has played like 18 when they first started the playoffs in the first round
Which I think was the divisional round, that's a best of five.
They got pushed to the brink by Providence.
They barely won three to see you thinking, OK, Charlotte scraped its way through.
It's going to be a long, arduous road to the Calder Cup final.
Not so much really good goaltending numbers.
Capo, Cacken and Capo, Cacken and Cooper Black, former Nanaimo Clipper, Mr.
Blank and also Canappleby, former Memorial Cup winner.
Hey, it's like a group effort, but they all have just sparked like two
goalies with under two goals against averages.
They're a really good hockey team.
So after that first round where they went right down to the wire,
they beat Hershey three, nothing in a three game sweep in the best of five
and then decided they were going to do the exact same thing to LaValle
in the Eastern final, except that was the best of
seven. And the Charlotte checker said, no problem, we're going to sweep this for
nothing. So yeah, as you mentioned, they barely played any playoff games.
The guys leading the charge. How about defenseman Mike Benning?
Not to be confused with Jim Benning or Elmer Benning.
Jim is his uncle. Elmer's his grandfather. Mike. So Mike is from the Benning family. Yes. Yeah. He's Brian Benning or Elmer Benning. Jim is his uncle. Elmer is his grandfather.
Mike, so Mike is from the Benning family. Yes.
Yeah, he's Brian Benning's son. He's Matt Benning's brother.
His name is Mike Benning.
There's a lot going on here. Anyway, there's him.
Former L.A. Kings defenseman Tobias Bjorn Fjort.
I think I'm saying that correctly. Bjorn Fjort.
And then former Vancouver giant Justin Sordiff is and he's probably.
Well, there's a couple of names on Jesse.
Jesse Pulley, a YARVY is going to get to him.
Yeah. Will Lockwood. Yep.
But sort of is the one if you're talking about guys that are going to have
an impact at the next level,
because I mean, if you're talking about the HL being a developmental league,
the story of this culture cup final is way more about Abbotsford than it is
about Charlotte. With all due respect,
Charlotte's got a bunch of veteran guys like Poole Yarvey,
like Kacken and like Lockwood to a certain degree.
Sort of the one guy who probably next year,
if Florida loses some guys to free agency,
they're counting on him to jump up and be a full-time NHL speaking of young players
This is a great great chance to read and ask us anything
Do you think lecker a Mackey is being held out of playoff games because he's part of a deal
That will go down as soon as the a shall playoffs are over. Okay, you've seen this conspiracy theory
I was thinking about that too. I've seen the conspiracy theory. Yeah. Number one, no.
You sure?
I don't, I, okay.
A hundred percent?
I don't think it has anything to, I think
Leckermackie could be traded, but I don't
think it has anything related to whether or
not he's a healthy scratch.
There's no reason for, this isn't the trade
deadline, this isn't like, well, like what would
you be keeping him out of the lineup for like, make sure he
doesn't like get hurt.
But no, you, you want, even if you were the
acquiring team, even if you were the acquiring
team, you'd be like, yeah, I want them to play.
Obviously I want them to get this experience,
especially if we're going to add them.
Um, it makes no sense, but I do think that
Lekkerimaki is the most likely trade chip that
the Canucks have. He's not playing well. He's earned this healthy scratch.
Yeah, he's earned the healthy scratch. I think it's a fairly easy excuse. The kid is still
super skinny. He's not a big guy. He's had a long season, a lot has happened. He's been in the NHL a little bit, this long run
with Abbotsford.
He hasn't played a season like this before and
the hockey, I think, just, it just all got a little
bit too much for him.
He needs to eat some Bojangles.
He needs to eat some Bojangles.
Well, maybe something a little healthier, but he's
got a big off season ahead of him, regardless
of which organization he ends up with.
But I do almost expect Leckermackie to be traded
now, because I also think that for the Canucks,
you're looking at their forward group.
And first of all, you cannot pencil Leckermackie
into a spot on the NHL lineup.
You'd like to, you'd like it to be that way, but you can't.
But you can't.
I mean, there's other guys that have surpassed him.
Well, I think Carlson will be on the team, but in a different role.
I don't know if Carlson has top six potential, prove me wrong.
Linus Carlson, we'll see.
Maybe he can bump up there once in a while.
Prove me wrong, kids.
Lekker-Mackie was drafted to be a top six winger and a big time
goal scorer.
And I think there are some teams out there that
would probably still see that potential and say,
man, he's a young kid.
He's still got to get bigger and stronger and
we'll take a shot at him.
Um, the Canucks don't want to trade Will
Ender.
They don't want to trade DPT.
There's not much left after that, right?
There was another Ask Us Anything that came in
and it was basically like,
do you think the Canucks are going to be able to add
three forwards and preferably top six
and a couple of them maybe centers
with just picks or prospects?
Are they going to have to use some of their roster players?
And my whole thing has been like, I don't know if they're
going to be able to do it at all.
I think that, sorry, not to cut you off, but I think that
it's a tad naive from the organization.
And I know both of us have heard the same thing,
that they're almost staunchly opposed to moving
a young defenseman, but it seems naive to think that you're going to get the job done without moving
one.
I don't think they're opposed to moving certain guys.
And also, sorry.
You have so many D men too.
Like that's your one.
Sorry.
The guy I'm talking about is Willander.
Like I think that, I think he's-
Well, DPD is the most untouchable of all of them.
Exactly.
I would agree with that 100%.
So there might be some arguments over it, right?
You train what you have the most of to get what you have the least of.
But there's the one that you'll move and the one that you won't.
I think that Willander, in a very weird way, because he hasn't been exposed to professional
hockey yet, might be the most intriguing in a trade scenario because of the unknown.
The box, the box.
You know, it's like you don't know what you're getting.
The DPT, the reason you don't want to deal with him
is because you've seen what he can do at the NHL oven.
You're so intrigued by it.
Now, other NHL teams would be as well,
but for the Canucks, you're like,
no, we're not moving off this guy.
Like we know exactly what we think we've got here.
I think one of their forwards
that they're going to have to add
is going to have to be some sort of cap dump.
Like some older player, maybe with one or two
years left on his deal that, you know, like, uh,
I don't want to say, like, I don't know if they
were calling on Kreider.
Sure.
The Rangers, uh, just traded him to Anaheim,
but something like that, where you're like, oh, he used to be a good player.
Can I, can I ask you about a guy?
What do you think about Brian Rust?
Because I was talking or sorry, I was reading
the other day, not talking, I was reading the other
day, the Pierre Lebrun piece in the athletic that
we ran through yesterday.
And there's a big chunk of it discussing the
Pittsburgh Penguins in the sense of Penguin.
The Penguins right now are that one really the one lone team that everyone is pointing
to and they're like, that's a clearly defined seller.
Yeah, they're not buying.
They want to turn things over.
They've hired this, you know, very young and experienced head coach.
The stuff's out there about how the Tang had an awful season.
LeBron went on to write that they are listening
to pretty much everyone other than their legacy guys.
So that's, you know, Crosby.
I think Brian Rust is the perfect type of guy
that I'm talking about.
Yeah.
He's got the Pittsburgh connection too.
He's got 31 goals this season.
Last season.
Last season.
Well, it's still this season.
I guess it is this season.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
This past season.
Yeah.
I think that's, you know, like that's the type of name
that I think they're going to have to. I know. Because if you're talking about, you know, yeah, yeah, this past season. Yeah. Um, I think that's, you know, like that's the type of name that I think they're going to have to.
I know.
Because if you're talking about, you know, like,
okay, let's say one of those Marco Rossi.
Yep.
Right.
Okay.
That's going to cost a pick and a prospect maybe.
So the first round pick and a prospect goes,
let's say it's the first round pick and I don't
know, Lecker or Mackie.
Okay.
Let's, let's, let's say it's that, don't yell at me.
Then you've got that player.
What are you going to do then?
Because if you trade, I mean, I'm not a
hundred percent against this, but if, think
about it from the Canucks perspective, okay?
Mm-hmm.
Now don't think about it from your perspective,
you're one of these, they should just rebuild.
They're not going to.
Okay.
You can say trade Garland.
I understand that, but then you going to. Okay. You can say trade Garland and understand that,
but then you had to replace Garland.
You know, you can say trade Hoaglander, but
you know, from what I've heard, they see
Hoaglander as a real bounce back candidate.
Agreed.
And possibly a guy that's going to play with
Pedersen.
Yeah.
I think both those things check.
Speaking of Pedersen, let's play that 32 Thoughts audio now. I haven't heard this. I don't know
if this is going to be anything new, but this is Elliott Freeman, 32 Thoughts on
the Lea's-Pedersen situation in Vancouver.
When it comes to Pedersen, he came back from Sweden to meet with Adam Foote, when Adam Foote got hired.
What did they ask him to show a bit more investment into the team?
They took that as investment into the team.
They really liked that he did that.
I just feel that Vancouver is only doing this if it solves their center problem. Like that's the only way I think Vancouver is doing this.
Is if it, if they, because everybody knows they're a part on suitor.
What the market looks like it can do for suitor,
Vancouver doesn't want to go there.
They would like Heidel to either be their three C or a top six winger.
I think in a perfect world, that's where they see Heidel playing.
So if petters, if they trade Pedersen and they don't solve the other holes, I don't think they believe
it makes any sense for them.
So they asked him to show a bit more investment.
He's doing that.
And I think they've made it clear that unless it really makes sense for them to fill their
other holes, they don't think it's good business. That's
where I think it stands. I think they want to be a contending team. 100%. 100%. That's
why I think this Pedersen move is as we just described it. How do you trade that guy and
go backwards and not solve your problems?
This is a time where you're looking to solve your problems, not creating more problems
for yourself.
Yeah, there's been enough problems in that market over the last year.
It would behoove them to be in solving mode as things move forward for the Canucks.
I totally see that.
They want us to talk about them less next year.
When Pederson arrives in the first skate,
everyone's going to be like, what does he look like?
Yeah.
Is that new?
Is that last season's Petey or is that old Petey?
And I feel like we're going to find out pretty quick
because you'll be able to see it.
You're 50 pounds overweight.
Yeah.
Dang.
I've been drinking nothing but milkshakes.
Yeah.
You mean the diet milkshakes?
But do you have jump in your snap?
A little bit of pap, moving those feet.
By the way, I don't know if I can go through
another season of Drantz saying the word juice.
It's a lot.
It's a lot of juice.
Yeah. Juice. Yeah. It just the word juice. It's a lot. It's a lot of juice.
Yeah.
Juice.
Yeah.
This has no juice.
There are aisles in the shopping center with less juice.
It's crazy how much juice he has
and how much he wants to share with the people.
Could you see us a situation next year
where they go one through three at center
with Pederson, Rossi and Heidel?
Yeah.
That that's a three.
I mean, it's not bad.
It's not terrible. Well, it's not bad if PD's returns to form.
If he doesn't, it's not very good.
But if he doesn't return to form, the whole thing, if he doesn't return to form
and put it this way, if he doesn't return to form, the whole thing sunk anyway.
It doesn't matter who you're saying.
I could do another season of hearing Drancet say juice.
I don't know if I can do another season of watching last year's Pederson.
Like, it's just another season of this man would be so, so depressing and just so life-sucking. And toxic. Yeah. And just the, you'd be forced to talk about it because
it'd be the major narrative all year, especially if they missed the playoffs and it's just
like, oh my God, like, come on, give us a break. But if he's to return, maybe not like like top form but in a reasonable facsimile of it. That's all it has to be
Oh, yeah, he doesn't even have that hundred points
He just has to be good and then if it goes Rossi and he now he lost to stay healthy and Rossi has to prove
That he can be a bona fide to see
They'd be back in the playoff mix. Yeah, I would say yeah, which is the clear stated goal, right?
but you get back into that conversation that Rutherford had after
The the half season of talk it where they went into the playoff season where he's like if everything goes, right?
Yeah, if everything goes right we're gonna be okay
I know I'm paraphrasing. Mix isn't enough though because missing it as a bubble team and then getting a low pick again
Is also not helping the situation. Well, there's if you're repeating the same repeating the same, like, oh, you miss it by two points every year,
you're just stuck in that mushy middle for your life.
All right. We got all summer to discuss this.
Yay.

It's Bob the Mojmar John of it's here on the hell for number of show on sports
net six 50. What up Moj? Good morning gentlemen.
So of everything that sunk the BC lions yesterday,
and we talked about it throughout the first
hour and a half of the program, I had a few different things is the reason that the Lions
lost.
I did not have inconsistency being the downfall of the Lions yesterday, but you did Moj, please
explain.
Well, I mean, offensively, the makes the big plays, right?
I mean, you saw the explosiveness of the offense on several occasions, but unfortunately it's
kind of weird.
So what's the week before remember we're talking about Trey Ford making the really hard plays
and making the big plays and not making the simple plays.
I kind of plagued the lines last night.
I mean, they, they have the big home runs to hatch or to Eberhardt.
You know, they just couldn't establish any consistency in any
rhythm on offense and, you know, get into situations where it's second
and three or second or five or whatever.
They just, like I said, they just couldn't get into any rhythm and it
cost them and they just, I don't know what it was while the disappointing
part about the office was the fact that, you know, they were starting
for American offensive linemen and yet they have problems on the offensive line. Now, give Winnipeg credit. A lot of times they
were blitzing maybe one or two more than the Lions can handle, but the Lions have
to figure it out and they have to figure it out quick because they get Winnipeg
at home on the weekend again. So there you go.
Will Nathan Rourke be available for that Winnipeg game you just mentioned? I mean, I don't think it's a extremely serious injury.
Just, we never got an update after the game.
Of course, it's gonna be reevaluated,
but in terms of the oblique, it didn't seem like
there was a lot of concern around the team.
Like the vibe that you just got being on the bus
and like, you know, obviously flying home.
So never talked to anybody officially, but again, just the vibe that you just got being on the bus and like, you know, obviously flying home. So never talked to anybody officially,
but again, just the vibe that I got,
it didn't feel like it was that serious of an injury.
The run defense. Do we want to go there? That was not good yesterday,
especially Brady Olivera out.
Yeah. I mean, that's you Stevenson, the kid from Alberta. I mean,
he looked like an all star last night. Um, it was disappointing.
It really was considering what we saw the week before. And again,
somebody rushes for 200 yards against you. That's that's,
and the worst part about that is they're basically telling you we're going to run
the ball, see if you can stop us and you still can't do it.
There is a little hope for the lions on that front.
They get Cione to be him a back or defensive end who was suspended for two games.
So he is back in the lineup and he
plays the road just as good as he plays the path and then the other hope eventually is to get Josh
Woods back in the lineup they're looking they were looking at Woods being an impact player last year
moving him to the middle he played a little bit on the outside for the Lions and played rather
well but once Woods and Tui Hema back, that should help their run defense.
To what extent, we don't know, but obviously better than we saw last night.
So it's two games in and it was a short week, so not a lot of time between games and it's hard to get a
clear idea of this team and what its identity and what it's going to be like after a small sample
size like that. But I'm curious to hear your thoughts on how optimistic you are after
two games like even remove the Rourke injury from it there were there are some
positive signs there's some maybe some worrisome signs about the slow starts
and the lack of production in the first half but overall given you've watched
these games as closely as anybody what have you thought after two games well I
said this is the start of the year I said the ceiling for this team is
probably maybe 12 wins the the floor is 10.
Or probably the floor is 8 and I think they're going to wind up at 10.
From what I've seen, I think this team is going to get better as the season moves along
as they bring in maybe a little different personnel.
They understand Buck Pierce's offense a little better.
But I just think that this is still, you know, everybody kind of thinks, well, Buck Pierce's offense a little better. But I just think that this is still,
everybody kind of thinks,
well, Buck Pierce, Ryan Rick made a new regime,
new coaching staff, boom, they're gonna go to 12 wins.
Even Ryan told me this when he took the job,
he goes, it's not gonna be overnight.
It might take a year or two,
or probably like another year or two
to get all the pieces that they need
and that they feel comfortable with in all the spots, right?
It's just not an easy overnight solution.
So we'll see.
There's a lot of potential there.
I think the big thing for this team though,
and we saw it last night, is that the offense
preferably would like to make this into a track meet,
make these games into track meets
and put points on the board.
And as a result,
you take the other team out of the running game we saw that against Edmonton
they're forced to pass the Elks were in the second half they really couldn't go
back to their running game which is a very good running game Wippegg of course
never was behind in that game so as a result they could stay on schedule they
can keep running you know Stevenson last night and you know they play
their short game with struggle or so.
That's the big thing too.
The lions is that the offense has to produce and when it does,
it helps out the defense and hides and masks.
So other deficiencies.
You're speaking to Bob the Mojmar,
John of it's here on the Halford and brush show on Sportsnet 650.
So we had these sort of pseudo health update on Nathan Rourke.
What about the lion staffer who suffered what appeared to be a pretty
serious sideline injury yesterday?
Carter handles a young kid.
He's a new graphic graphic designer with the lions, with their social media team.
And I don't know if you saw the collision on TV, but I guess from what I was told,
Ryan Rick Maiden was in the group.
Sean White was in the group and I guess Carter might've been in the middle.
And when Stanley Berryhill went flying into that ad sign
on the sideline, Carter Handel somehow got mixed up
in the collision.
From what I'm hearing, a really,
a pretty significant injury.
We're talking ACL, MDL type situations.
So he was up to the trader table.
We saw that from where we were at and they examined him,
but he's going to be reevaluated.
So a shout out to Carter Handel.
Hopefully he gets through this, but from what I'm hearing,
it wasn't a good situation.
So young kid, first game,
I think it might've been his first game on the sidelines,
first or second game on the sidelines
and he got caught in the mix.
Those signs will trip you up sometimes, eh Moj?
Yeah, sidelines are a dangerous place, man.
Don't kid yourself.
And you know, they kind of tripped me up a couple of times
and I never was, I never had,
one time I kind of had a little bit of a collision
but nothing major.
But you know, even this training camp,
one of the funnier moments of training camp
was that Baker was on the sidelines and he was texting, right? And this tells you again that we're laughing about
this but it could have been rather serious injury. I don't know if I mentioned this before,
but anyway, Nathan Rourke lets go of a throw and overthrows the receiver. Matt's on the
sidelines, he doesn't even see the football coming. The football hits him square between
the eyes and this thing had some gas on it.
This was not like a throw that was lobbed up.
And hits Matt square between the eyes
while he's texting on his phone.
And he goes down, gets up, picks up his glasses,
and we're all kind of laughing because, you know,
Matt wasn't hurt.
But, you know, had that football hit him
like an inch over the other side,
and those sunglasses that he was wearing, he except for a serious eye injury, right?
So you always have to be alert and aware on the sidelines. It's it's a dangerous spot
Can you please tell us about your 12-hour excursion to Winnipeg? Oh why it took 12 hours?
It was that was it. So last year I did the auction at a foundation, a golf
tournament foundation, it's called Team Up. Graham Roxbroner, you know my coach
is soccer out at Trinity Western. Yeah, I remember the name. Great guy. Yeah. So what
Graham does and a lot of the Trinity athletes, Trinity Western athletes are
involved in, they help underprivileged kids locally.
They introduced the sport.
They also have international projects as well with the soccer team
and with their volleyball team.
So the team up foundation, they have a big golf terminal at Swannies.
Last year I did their tournament and did the auctioning and Graham was,
you know, they're pretty happy and say, Hey, we'd love to have you back.
And we looked at the schedule.
I'm like, Hmm, I'm flying out to Winnipeg that day because we have a game the next day
against the Blue Bombers.
Your grandma's like, well, we can fly you the day of.
We'd love to have you at the tournament.
We'll pay for your flight to Winnipeg.
And then of course I could fly back with the team.
I'm sitting there doing the math.
Let me figure this out.
I get to play golf and I spend,
I don't have to spend a night in Winnipeg.
Like, hello, no brainer, right?
I was like, you're doing me a favor.
They're like, oh, we're so appreciative of you doing this.
I'm like, guys, you're doing me a favor.
Now, had it been Montreal, it would probably
been a little bit of a different deal, but yeah.
So anyway, did the tournament, came home,
got to bed about midnight, woke up at like 5.30,
eight o'clock flight, landed in Winnipeg at like one,
and had about two hours just to nap up at the hotel,
onto the bus at 4.30 and away we went to the game
and then the game after.
And I gotta tell you this,
I know Halperd, you're not a big golfer,
but have you ever played in a tournament
or even had a round where you were just unconscious putting?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Once in a while it brings me back and I'm like, I, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Once in a while it brings me back and I'm like,
I did that a few years ago.
Yeah.
I mean, it might have happened to me maybe
like two or three times, but in that tournament,
we were 1600, we finished in second, by the way,
at Suwannee.
I probably sank and I'm not BSing, four 20 to 25
footers and probably another four 10 to 20 footers.
Like, I sank like about eight putts,
and I'm not joking, I was just like,
every time I got over the ball,
I'm like, this is going in.
Oh no, I'm calling my shots, I'm telling my guys,
I go, leave your putter alone, this is going in.
And watch those eyes closed, there we go.
Yeah, like they're just, they're howling,
like, and that's happened a couple of times
that I know talking to guys, sometimes you,
you just play in a tournament for whatever reason.
Yeah.
Just zone in and you're sinking everything.
And that was my tournament at Swanee said,
but a big shout out to Graham and the folks at T-Mobile.
It was a good day.
Awesome, buddy.
Did you, did you manage to catch the hockey game at all? No.
We were on air while the game was going.
We heard, I obviously heard about it, right?
I mean, Florida blowing that lead.
And you know, it's funny because you're seeing a lot of these articles and I
know you talked about this before, Jason.
Yeah.
Is this the best final since 94?
And right now it's on schedule to be that.
Yeah, it has everything.
I mean, you couldn't ask for anything else.
I mean, Moja, we'd had some conversations in the
past about the NHL, you know, not being as nasty
as it used to be and the rivalry is not where they
used to be.
I mean, this series, there's an element of old
school in this too with some of the personalities I mean, this series, there's an element of old school in this too
with some of the personalities that are in this series.
I mean, you know, I know the talent of McDavid
and Dry Cytle is something to behold,
but don't you think that having guys like Corey Perry
and Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett, it adds something to it
just because it adds that level of sports hate that all great series have.
Yeah. And you know, let's not forget about the fact that we're talking back to
back two years in a row.
This team has, or these teams have met in the final.
And can you imagine if the connects play the Bruins in 2012 or even 2013?
Can you imagine?
No.
Yeah.
Like just how nasty it would have been.
And.
But can you also imagine Moj, not to cut you off,
but like how desperate we'd be as Canucks fans to win?
You know, that must be what the Oilers and their
fans are thinking, like it was so painful
last year to lose.
I don't know if I can go through that again.
Yeah. And again, you can understand the investment just like you mentioned.
So yeah, like I said, if you're looking at all time,
great Stanley cup finals, there's probably three
games left in this series.
And when it's all said and done, I'll
probably be right up there.
Was 94 your favorite?
Yeah, it was.
I mean, that was just such great hockey.
So let me throw this out for the younger guys. to be right up there. Was 94 your favorite? Yeah, it was. I mean, that was just such great hockey.
So let me throw this out for the youngsters out there that don't realize where hockey was at that time.
Sports Illustrated did a cover and I'm just going to paraphrase.
I can't remember the exact phrase, but it was like why the NHL is hot
and why the NBA is not.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Yeah.
You got it.
Yeah. That was after that series, yeah. You got it. Yeah.
That was after that series, right?
Or was it before it?
It was right around that time.
It might've been before or just after,
but it was right around that time.
But the NHL was on a roll.
I mean, you're talking about the NBA back,
I mean, it was crazy.
And well, we've seen what happened in the last little,
I mean, hockey's still doing okay,
but the NBA has kind of taken over a little bit.
I think hockey has come, I think right now,
um, the product is really, really solid and, and
it's not every game.
Um, but the scoring levels have gone back to
almost eighties levels.
The amount of scoring chances,
I mean, we've had,
I think Paul Maurice said it really well yesterday.
He's like, you know, I know the numbers might not say it,
but the goaltending in this series has been amazing.
And there have been some incredible saves,
but when you have the talent of these teams
in creating scoring chances,
and they create them in different ways, for sure,
but the scoring chances and the goals are off the charts
to the point where you'd look at the numbers of guys
and be like, oh, they haven't been that good,
and then you can look at some of the great saves they've made
and actually they've been okay.
Yeah, and like when you're talking about the goaltending,
let's not forget where goaltending is now
in terms of the skill level, right?
Especially when you compare it to earlier times, I guess, or decades ago or a couple
of decades ago, or even in the 90s, right?
I mean, when we're talking about the 94 Canucks, the goaltending is just at a different level.
And at the same time, the talent level of the players
is at a different level too, right?
So yeah, the game has just progressed and you're right.
I mean, there's so many chances and as a result
that there's more goals.
And at the same time, it's not like the goalies are,
you know, playing poorly.
It's just the fact that they're getting beat
by good shots and good,
and players that have a lot of talent.
Yeah.
Okay, Moj, we got a food ask us anything here, courtesy of-
Hey, by the way, can I interject
the good food story at the end?
Yeah, why don't you do it right now?
So Winnipeg, I always like doing something different
on the road when we go on the road.
Sure.
So I Google best sandwich shop in Winnipeg.
I come up with this story.
Somebody had written the story of the best sandwiches in the world.
The number nine sandwich was from a place in Winnipeg.
And I actually ordered it.
It was a Vietnamese place.
And the sandwiches they have, we had this cold cut, we had beef, and we had the chicken.
It was from 10 hoes.
I guess they're called Van Mien.
I got it right now.
Was it like a Vietnamese sub?
Yeah. Yes.
Cold cut Van Mien.
Yeah.
I'm on the story from CTV Winnipeg right now.
It's been led the news for a month.
Yeah.
It was amazing.
It was really good.
Like it was so good.
And five sandwiches, check this out, with Uber,
five sandwiches, 40 bucks.
Okay.
I'm going to supersede whatever, uh, food
ask us anything, how far it came up with.
Cause this is, this one is actually important to me.
Yeah.
Okay.
Best sandwich shop in Vancouver and preferably close to Mount Pleasant.
Ooh.
Because I, this is one of these things where I've been like, I wish there was more sandwich
shops.
Yeah.
You know, like give me a good full sandwich that isn't too, too expensive.
That used to be easy to find.
It's true.
You know, just like.
Yeah.
There'll be like an Oakland 41st
and I can't remember the name of it,
but I think it might have been called Katz's.
I think basically they got reincarnated,
they shut it down and I don't know,
somebody else is there now.
But yeah, sandwich shop in Vancouver,
that's a great question.
I'm gonna throw it out to the listeners.
Meat and breads really good.
It's got meat and bread.
That's it.
There's a few, was that downtown?
There was one downtown.
There's a few locations.
One like a block from here.
Yeah.
There's a few locations there.
Okay.
But you know, are you talking about subs or you're talking like, you know,
New York style deli sandwiches, you know, you got to differentiate that, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm, I'm more, I mean, mean, I would take anything, but I'm
more talking about the deli sandwiches.
Yeah.
That's a great question.
There was a place that we went to, we picked up
some subs sometime, but it wasn't bad.
The thing was called Vinny's on Venables or
something like that.
It's like Venables in commercial, little
old-in-the-wall place that wasn't bad.
Um, but yeah, I'm stuck on that one.
Like I really am in terms of a New York style and like a Schwartz's type place in Vancouver.
I know they have a couple.
A couple people have texted in a place on commercial.
I don't know if you know this one, Halford or Moj.
La Grotto Del Framage.
There's one that opened up in my neighborhood as well.
Yeah, they're good. Big Star is one that everyone likes that opened up in my neighborhood as well. Yeah. OK. Yeah, they're good.
Big Star is one that everyone likes as well.
Big Star Sandwich Company. Yeah.
And now they've got one close to here.
They didn't like the buns at Big Star.
Oh, OK. Too hard.
Sorry, Big Star. Yeah.
Grotto Del Formaggio commercials really good.
All right. We got some options here.
Moj, thanks for doing this today, bud.
We really appreciate it. Enjoy the weekend.
We'll do this again next Friday.
OK, fellas, all the best. Have a good one, dude. Bob, the Mojmar John of it's here on the Haliford and brush show on sports
Then 650 I like some of the names that are coming in apparently
There's a deli in Richmond called boy with a knife what and it's just a guy in Richmond
So I've heard someone maybe they were trying to text in a like another 9-1-1 tech service someone takes it
Someone takes it with a knife. There's a there's a good sandwiches. There's an Earl of sandwich in Langley
I have heard about this. I haven't had a chance to go as a sandwich aficionado
I'll have to go check it out. No boy with a knife. What about Aussies in Tosin?

Okay.
Big sandwich.
It is a big sandwich.
Hey, that's important, size matters.
Really good radio content.
They're all in the sandwich.
They're all in their 40s and they all want a sandwich.
Okay.
I agree with Ruff, there's not enough sandwich shops.
Like in the West End, we don't have any sandwich delis.
Like I mean, I'm a Safeway and stuff.
But I mean like an actual dedicated sandwich shop,
I wish there was one close to where I live because I miss them
Why do I feel like you would spit out safe way you go in there and be like fine get the crust cut off
Does make good sandwiches, I'm not discounted don't but I mean like an actual don't have to be nice to them
They're fine they make sandwich you don't have to be nice to them. They're not be polite. They're fine. They make sandwich
You don't have to be polite to big safe way
I mean they make the fresh ones though
I'm not talking about the pre packaged ones like they do make them fresh for you if you go to their deli
But I'm it's not the same thing
