Alfred and Breft Show on Sports 10650.
What up, AJ?
What day is today?
What happened?
It's Friday.
I don't know what went on.
First off, let's start right here.
How was last night?
How was it watching Cam Schlittler enter the pantheon of Yankees' grades alongside
Bucky Dent and Aaron Boone in the playoff hierarchy?
You know what?
I mean, and I know you have the beautiful insider coming up.
Like, that's an epic.
I mean, that just is.
Bruff, and I know you said it.
Like you, whatever happens moving forward,
that performance last night is crazy.
Speaking of moving forward,
now I have to ask the even bigger question.
As a business owner and someone that wants to see his business thrive,
how do you balance that with potentially having to cater to Blue Jays fans
at AJ's Pizza on East Broadway over the next five days?
There's a little something special in this pizza.
So, Harper, when I text you and I said, listen, if you show up in Expos gear, the neutrals.
Because I love the Montreal Expos, then you get a free drink and then you're neutral.
It's out there in the ether, everybody. The man has said it himself. I got to admit, like, if there's a place to watch baseball over the next five days, I can't think of a better place because if you haven't been to ages yet, if you haven't been to AJ's yet, it's adorned with Yankees.
memorabilia in history
but there's a ton of Blue Jays fans here
what do you guys have set up for the weekend
like I'm assuming that this is going to be like
a baseball bar over the next
it's going to be crazy it's going to be awesome
you know what this is this is I mean
I know I know I text you guys yesterday
too it's like sticking a needle in my eye
watching all these games but
you know it is going to be amazing
it is going to be awesome and
you know what hey I'm also I'm a big
Mariners fan
okay
I want to what not I'm not a big Mariners
fan but I love watching them
and it's just going to be great. It's going to be awesome.
Good for the Blue Jays. Obviously I'm cheering for my Yankees
but you know, we'll see what happened.
Go to AJ's this weekend, 325 and 327
East Broadway, eat pizza, drink beer, watch baseball.
It's a great time to do it. Hey, Jay, thanks for doing this, bud.
Congrats again. I can't wish you the best of luck but some good luck
over the next few days. It's totally fair. I understand.
We got a little thing. Yeah, yeah. Hey, you guys have a great weekend
and enjoy this whole amazing weekend of sport.
You too, buddy, thanks.
That's AJ from AJ's pizza on East Broadway,
here on the Halpert & Brough Show on SportsNet 650.
Love AJ, but I really hope his hopes and dreams are crushed this week.
Love you, AJ.
Love you, AJ.
Lattie, who do you think should be favored in this series?
Oh, that's a good question.
Because the betting odds say the Yankees,
and the betting odds also say the Yankees are the favorites to win the world series.
The regular season series, they have the home field advantage.
They've been rested.
I feel like the Js have the slight advantage, of anything.
Who has the talent advantage?
Blue Jays, of course.
I don't think there's any question, right?
Maybe I should ask something that was an unbiased opinion.
If I could get here, if I could get...
It's two very different teams.
It's hard to...
It is very different teams.
From a gambling perspective, if I could get the Jays as an underdog going into the series,
I'd jump all over it.
Oh, you can, so go for it.
So jump.
Yeah, I'm going to.
Like, they've got home field advantage.
They're not going to face any of the big guns in game one in this series.
Like, Luis Heel wasn't even on the wildcard roster.
They better win game one.
Right, that's huge.
There's a lot of pressure going into that game.
I'm going to go out.
That sucks one game one.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe what we saw from Schlittler last night might not be replicated again this postseason because it was like an all time performance.
Now, Freed is going to be a tough piece of business.
But that being said, like if you throw a Gossman and Bieber, you've got to be happy with your chances in those two games.
And then at that point, you're like, we just need to win one more.
And their hitters have had success against these.
guys, even with their great numbers.
And they won the regular season series.
So with all that said, we're going to do a little bit more Jay's preview right now.
Jay's Yankees.
Zach Worden from SportsNet joins us here now on the Halford & Brough Show on SportsNet 650.
Gordon, Zach, how are you?
Good morning, guys.
I'm doing well, thank you.
How are you doing?
We're good.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
We appreciate it.
So now that the matchup is set, I do want to ask, would you have preferred to have seen the Red Sox taking on the Jays in this scenario?
Or are you happy that it was the Yankees who advanced and we'll now take on the Jays beginning Saturday?
I think I'm happy that it was the Yankees from a storyline perspective.
I think it's going to be a super fun series.
Obviously, both sides have kind of had their back and forth over the years,
and it's going to be really cool to get to see them play in a postseason series.
I think, you know, if you're looking at who might have been the better matchup,
I think I might have taken the Red Sox, but, you know, only by a slight margin.
Both are really good teams.
And, you know, I think the Blue Jays have at least earned the right to kind of feel good going into either matchup.
and, you know, obviously they get the buy,
they kind of have the rotation set up for game one,
and, you know, hopefully you're able to line up for game two
against Freed with one of your main guys.
So I think they should feel good either way,
but, you know, at the end of the day,
it probably would have been the Red Sox I think would have been the better matchup,
but I still think that they'll line up okay against the Yankees.
Who do you think should be favored in this series?
Because the betting odds say the Yankees.
Yeah, I think I, you know, the Yankees are built to be a postseason team,
so I kind of understand that.
But, you know, I think the Blue Jays have been so good at home this year.
You know, one of the best records are on their home field in baseball.
And they obviously have, you know, three or five at home.
They have, you know, Gosman and Bieber set up for game one and two.
They get to take on the Yankees kind of three or four in Luis Hill or Will Warren in game one.
I think that, you know, it's going to be a long series.
And I think the longer the series goes, the better chance that the Blue Jays are going to have against this Yankees team.
So I think, you know, I understand it being the Yankees because they are, you know, so well built for kind of postseason baseball.
But I think, you know, this Blue Jays team has kind of earned the right to kind of be in the driver's seat here.
Okay, I know it's a team game.
And I know for the Blue Jays especially this season, it was a team game.
Everyone's stepping up.
They're unlikely heroes in a bunch of their wins.
but Vladi Guerrero
how much responsibility
does he shoulder in this series
a ton I think
this is a huge moment for him
this is you know
obviously coming off signing the big extension
this is going to be a really big
moment for him in his career especially if
Obeschet isn't healthy
he's going to be the main focal point of the Blue Jays
offense and obviously he kind of
had his struggles down the stretch so
I think that you know where he's
going to be the main guy that we should be watching in this series, and it's going to be
kind of him on him to lead this Blue Jays team against this Yankees pitching staff.
Obviously, you know, they did kind of have that, you know, like you mentioned, kind of
the 1 through 13 attack in the regular season, but in the playoffs, you know, it's kind of on your
guys to rise and be the guys that you're paying them to be.
And obviously, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is that guy for this, for this Blue Jays team.
And, you know, the Yankees are going to be throwing their best at the blue
Blue Jays. So it's Vlad who kind of has the ability and the talent to match that level and to
raise his game and we haven't seen it in the postseason from him yet. And this is going to be
kind of I think his chance to show that he is able to rise in in a playoff series and kind of
carry the Blue Jays to the promise land. And if Boba shuts out, you know, obviously we've seen
kind of him get pitched a little bit differently with without Bo over the last month or so. So for
him to kind of figure that out. It's going to be really important. And I think, you know, for
a guy who's kind of loved to play against the Yankees over the course of his career and has done
really well doing that, I think, you know, if you asked him who he wanted in this matchup, I think
he probably would have said the Yankees.
Yeah, well, actually, let's touch on that a little bit. What is the story? Did everyone
ever really get to the bottom of the story with Vladigra, or him originally saying, like,
I will never play for the Yankees and he cited family reasons and people like,
family reasons and then they went back and they were like oh maybe his dad was trying to sign or
was offered a contract from the Yankees back in the day and they chose Gary Sheffield instead or
like did it and then because later he said like you know I kind of misspoke and this is before
he'd re-signed with the JAs it kind of misspoke you know I talked to my dad and it's a business
so maybe I would consider signing with the Yankees like what what is what is the history there because
it is going to be a talking point
and I know Vladdy is going to get
quite the reception at Yankee Stadium.
Yeah, I think you're right
on the Gary Sheffield bit of that
where they picked him over Vlad's senior
and, you know, I think it's kind of funny
when you think, you know, back to kind of young
Vladdy saying that and then kind of running your back
a little bit and then, you know, this offseason
obviously with all the drama that
he had as far as leading up to the contract and everything
where he's, you know, like in posts on Instagram of him
in a Yankees jersey and sending Blue Jays fans into a tizzy over that.
I think it was kind of funny the way that whole unfolded,
and then, of course, he does end up signing the big contract with the Blue Jays.
But, you know, what kind of a wild rollercoaster has been for Vlad
and kind of his connection to the Yankees over the years.
And I certainly think this is going to be a chance for him to add another chapter to that.
And, you know, I think when you kind of watch him play the Yankees,
there seems to kind of be another level of enjoyment.
I think back, too, there was like kind of the winter series,
couple of years ago where they were out of school in Toronto and he was, and the one
kid at the school asked, you know, who's your favorite team to play against? And he says,
the Yankees. And, you know, that clip goes viral. I, you know, I think that kind of all leads up
to this moment. And it's going to be really exciting to see if he's able to kind of bring his
level back to what we have seen him when he's at his best. There was even a story going out
there that when when vladdie was a kid and his dad brought him out on the field um some yankee
staffer said you got to put your kid like your kid can't be out here so he's he's like held on to
that as well i don't even know i don't even know if that is true but like it is respect the pettiness it is
it is such a good it is such a good storyline um i do want to move past vladdie a little bit here
i mean this is a best of five game five if it happens is next friday are we
going to see Bichette at all
in this series? Is he out for this series?
Like what is the latest on him?
Yeah, I think that's kind of the most
important storyline of the next 24
hours is whether they put him
on the roster or not.
Obviously, they kind of have to have that in
tomorrow morning. And, you know,
they sounded a little bit more
optimistic about his status
over the week where
they were playing the intra-squad games at
Rogers Center. And, you know, I think
part of that might kind of be playing some
games because everything that we heard in the lead-up to that was that he wouldn't
be ready. And from what we've seen, you know, he's been swinging, but he hasn't been running
and he hasn't been kind of doing, you know, the side-to-side movements, the defense stuff.
And, you know, I wonder kind of if they think he's going to be potentially ready for like a game
four or five, then you do have to put him on the roster. And, but if not, then, you know, I obviously
we'll kind of find out tomorrow. And I kind of do wonder if they're, their optimism about his
kind of progress was
intentionally played up
a little just to kind of, you know,
throw some, play some games
leading into the series, kind of keep
whoever they were going to face on their toes
and not be able to completely plan for
what they're going to do.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if they kind of put him on the roster
and then he doesn't even
get to play in the series just to kind of have that
threat looming on the bench of, oh, is he going to
play? Is he not? What's he going to
look like when he's back? But, you know, for a guy
who, you know, has been such an important part of this Blue Jays team,
I think that you do want to see him at least run the bases
and kind of get his way back there, especially coming off a knee injury.
So even if it's as a DH, I think that you could probably find a way to get him back in there,
but I think that he would have to make some serious progress in the next week
to kind of be ready for a game four or game five.
If the Jays don't get past the Yankees and a lot of it,
You look at it and it's like, oh, they didn't have the hitting.
Why did they send him home that day will become like one of the questions in Blue Jay's lore?
Huge sliding doors moment, especially with his contract being up.
We're speaking to Zach Wharton from SportsNet Associate Editor, Blue Jays writer here on the Halford and Breff Show on Sportsnet 650,
previewing the Yankees and Blue Jays series, which gets underway on Saturday.
Okay, in light of what Schlittler, we're so good today on this, Schlittler did yesterday.
and in the shadows of that,
how do you either prepare or, you know,
try and predict what you can get
out of Trey you Savage in this series?
Yeah, I think you watched that matchup last night
of the two rookies and you're kind of dreaming
on what you hope you Savage can give you.
Right, right?
I think, you know, it's a guy who, you know,
you kind of watch, have watched him fish this year
and you kind of think this seems like the type of guy
that would rise in a postseason moment.
and kind of level up if you want to say it that way.
I, you know, especially I think the last start at Roger Center
was really interesting to me because, you know,
he's coming out after the game saying that, you know,
he loved pitching in front of the country.
Like it boosts here.
It bumped him up.
I think you even could kind of see like the adrenaline of like having that
major league atmosphere behind him where he was throwing harder.
Like his fastball was was up to 96 and 97.
And in that start kind of having the home crowd behind him.
So I think that this is a guy who even in,
college pitched really well in big situations.
And I think for them to kind of have him, you know, it's, it's been a huge story for them
to kind of have a rookie who's been able to come in and almost save the rotation in a way.
And, you know, with the Max Scherzer struggles, with Jose Perrios being injured, he's going
to be in the middle of things.
I don't know whether they're going to start him.
Obviously, you know, Ross Atkins gave like the most Ross Atkins quote about him ever,
saying that he's going to help them prevent runs in the.
the series, which, you know, is he going to play
center field? He's going to play shortstop. Ross isn't going to
tip his hands that way. But
I think he's
you know, with the fastball splitter mix, he lines
up really well against this Yankees
batting order, which is really lefty
heavy. And I, you know, I think
he's a guy that's going to really have a chance to impact
the series. And I would imagine that
given the status of their
rotation, it's a guy that they're going to let start,
whether it be, you know,
game three or game four. I think he'll
line up for one of those. What do you do with
Scherzer because there's nobody on this roster that has the kind of postseason experience that he has
and he's I mean he's he's 41 years old you get experience by being around for that long and he struggled
but you almost felt like when they announced the signing in the first place it was designed for these
kind of moments well he can still be around you just can't pitch if you don't put him on the roster
can you imagine not you imagine just having like angry Max Scherzer around like not being a part of it
but being in like I think it'd be more of a distract don't see next to Max
Max is very anger right now.
Please leave him alone.
What do you do with Scherzer?
Literal mad Max.
I think it's such a tough conversation because he really hasn't been all that good to end the year.
I think it was 25 earned runs in his last 25 innings.
And it's not a guy that I think you feel comfortable running out against a lineup like the New York Yankees right now.
We obviously saw them kind of take advantage of him in their last starts and some tipping and everything like that.
I think it's maybe a guy that you put on the rock.
and you kind of have him as your 13th pitcher, if anything,
and, you know, if you kind of break class in case of emergency with him
and, you know, you don't kind of line him up for a start.
I think yesterday was kind of telling where they run him out for five innings
and 70 pitches in the intra-squad game to a point where obviously
they're going to be keeping him stretched out.
And, you know, that completely kind of takes him out of the running for the games
this weekend, you know, kind of would line him up for a start in,
in game three or game four, but, you know, also at the same time, you know,
Chris Bassett, Atria Savage, like those guys weren't throwing that many pitches or anything
like that. So I think that they clearly pushed him back intentionally by doing that
and whether that's kind of keeping him fresh for an ALCF scenario or to, you know, kind of just
keep him ready to kind of do whatever. I don't think that he's going to line up in the rotation,
but I think that he's maybe a guy you just kind of carry because of that veteran experience.
and you know if you need to kind of have a spot like that
or if you kind of have you need the extra arm in the series
and you can kind of put them in but you know their staff seems pretty set
to me at least and it would it would maybe be a little bit of a surprise
if he does kind of get a start or pitch in a really really really big spot
Zach this was great man game one it's on the horizon
Saturday one o'clock first time ever jays and yankees in the playoffs
I'm super excited about it I'm sure you
you are as well. Enjoy the games this weekend. It should be a lot of fun. Thanks, guys. This was
fun. Appreciate having me on and I enjoy the rest of the playoffs here.
Yeah, thanks, man. Zach Worden, Sportsnet, Associate Editor and Blue Jays writer here on the
Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet, 650. Okay, let's do some Ask Us Anythings. It is
Ask Us Anything Friday, where you can text in and ask us anything. Dunbar-Lumber
text line 650-6-50. Metro Vancouver's trusted choice for contractors and Renno Warriors for over
50 years, visit them at one of their three locations to serve you or online at Dunbar
Lumber.com. Connolly in Vancouver, ask us anything. What is something you always double,
triple, or quadruple check, whether it's at work or about to go on a road trip or just mundane
stuff. Okay, I got two things. One, every time I leave my car, I like hit the, with the remote
to lock my doors, like three or four times. You know what? You should, you, you should,
should be checking to make sure your engine is off.
Well, that's, yeah, so I don't always do it.
Because I've actually worked two shows,
one of this station, one of the old one,
with my car running. The one of the old station
was especially bad because it was in like
an underground parking garage.
It was a four-hour show.
You know what I remember that? Four-hour show.
I went back and I was like, well, this thing's
pretty good on gas, I said.
There's not much... On the entire time.
Yeah, there's a bunch of bodies around it.
It's a warm.
The other thing is,
when I go on vacation, I check the house like 10 times for like windows closed or door
locked. And I'll be like, I'll be like going to the airport like a block away. And I'm like,
you know what? I'm just going to circle back and check all that stuff again. Just real quick.
Just real quick. Just real quick. I do. Okay. So the front door for me. So for those that don't know
in a previous life, I worked at a hotel for a long time. I worked in security at a hotel,
which is a hilarious thing. If you know anything about me. And my lack of
security
so I don't know if you're aware of this for now
but hotels they got a lot of doors
like doors per 60 is through the roof
there's a lot and you're like door city
over there so you're just constantly checking them
you know you make sure that the lock is
functional you make sure that they're closing
behind you you're always securing
rooms after someone uses so I just got in this habit
of constantly checking the door
after me so I will I've gone back
three or four times
upon leaving the house I'm like did I get
that one? Did I get that one? Yeah. To the point where people think I, you know,
and I'm not making light of OCD because it's a serious thing. But people are like, do you
have OCD? And I'm like, if the D stood for door, yes. But otherwise, I don't have that like
compulsive need to check stuff. It's just that one thing. It's very straight. For me, it's the
once over. Anytime I'm on vacation or anywhere that's not my own home and I'm leaving somewhere,
I always make sure everybody has everything. Oh, in the hotel room? Yeah, like a hotel room or a
restaurant. That's a really good one. And this.
It actually goes back to my band days because even though we technically had a tour manager and people in charge of us, I was the only responsible one out of like 10 guys and we're all in our 20s.
So I would always be the guy that would go in the hotel room or wherever we were staying and do the once over and make sure everybody had everything, their phones, their wallets, their keys, stupid stuff.
And I would always make sure everyone, and without fail.
Yes, without fail, somebody would always forget something.
I never, ever saw a room that didn't have something in it.
So from that point on, and 20 years later, I'm still doing that.
Whenever I leave a room that's not my own, I'm like, does everyone have everything?
I'd like to put an exclamation on this conversation.
That feeling when you're traveling and you're feeling around your pockets for your passport,
the rush between, oh, God, I lost it, and then the relief between, like, I don't think drugs can replicate the feeling when you find your passport.
Well, it's life altering if you don't have it.
It's just that little nanosecond where you think you've lost it.
And then you can find it?
I had a whole day on a recent trip overseas where I thought I'd lost my passport.
Oh, that's right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I was not fun to be around.
Let me tell you.
I was like trying to blame everyone.
You haven't.
So do I just live here now?
How does this work?
Your mind goes to so many different places.
You're like, am I going to get arrested?
And then it's the hassle factor.
It's like, where's the Canadian embassy?
There's very few things.
Get me to the embassy.
There are very few things that are more dan.
Shows up out of nowhere.
Yeah, I should have.
sir. I should have never vacationed in Russia.
Right. Outside of like getting, getting sick, I'd have to go to a hospital on vacation.
It's bad, obviously. And like very serious things like dying or being kidnapped. But on a lower scale, you know, you lose your passport and your mind automatically goes to like you said, I live here now.
Yeah, this is now at home.
How many embassies do I have to go to?
Do I have to pay off a government official?
Like, what do I have to do, right?
And then you find it, and all of that is alleviated.
It's like a drug.
It's an amazing.
It's also part of the problem is that you watch too many movies,
so you just assume it'll work out like a movie in like the worst way possible.
And they're like, no, this isn't a movie.
Like, there are things in place to help you.
When they give you a new passport, too, don't they put a little note being like, this idiot, lost their old one.
Yeah, this is like, you'll live with that for the rest of the one.
Basically just gave it to ISIS.
Yeah.
Here you go. I think you'll find everything in order.
Wallace Inspector.
Craig, the podcast listener in Pemberton, I like this. Ask us anything.
In your opinion, what delineates the border between an upper and lower body injury?
Is it the belly button?
I think that's too high.
The top of the hip bone?
Possibly the coxics.
I had to be careful with that one.
Grandma broker cockix.
Also, if you have a lower intestine injury, is that a lower.
upper body injury or an upper body lower injury.
That's a fantastic question.
Where is the delineation?
I think it might be like I don't know if it's a straight line.
You know how Trump always talks about the border between Canada
of the United States, like they just drew a straight line there.
It's a big, beautiful straight line and you're like, what the hell are you talking about?
I'm not sure he knows how this works.
Have you ever seen a border before?
Okay, let's do a quick Q&A and you say upper lower, okay?
Groin injury.
Lower.
Uh, stomach flu.
upper
stomach flu is like mid
a lot going on and lower
with the stomach
well you got two choices
appendectomy
upper
upper
upper yeah
hip replacement
surgery
yeah I think it's lower
is there
is there any body part in between
that I'm missing right now
I don't know
we got doctors listening
don't we
would not just be like
butt in lower
we don't have many doctors
listening
Brazilian
but there is one of saying
it's by accident
I would think it's butt and
lower, like the top of your butt and lower
would be lower body. Diminish
glutes. Well, I don't think you can have
the intestines split up. The intestines
are together, right?
I think anything's stomach... You can split
the Carolinas. Anything
anything's stomach and stomach
adjacent, so I'm going to go organs.
Right. I think that's all
upper. Right?
Yeah. Maybe we need a doctor to weigh
in us. Dicectomy? We really did. Lower.
Lower. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hernia, lower.
Yeah. And as
Because you get older, the vasectomy is actually significantly lower and lower and lower and lower.
I have no idea what three vasectomy does to a person.
This is right by my knee.

What up, Moge.
Good morning, Jim.
gentlemen, I'll just get it out of the way.
Cameron Schlittler.
That a boy. Nice.
Good job, buddy. You know what, Moj?
Dolly Wall's next to try it, and it is going to be hilarious.
Almost like Schlittler, we're throwing a perfect game today.
Brough got it right. I got it right. You got it right.
Dolly Wall is going to come in a ninth and break that no hitter off. I can guarantee him.
He's bad and clean up.
He is ready to knock this out of the park.
If Dolly Wall was a reliever, he'd be Mitch the Wild Thane Williams.
Oh, yeah.
With the mullet?
With the mullet?
I want to turn our attention to the BC Lions in action this Saturday, 4 o'clock BC place.
Big game coming up against Calgary, but you want to go back to last week talking about the finish on both sides of the ball.
And it was a very good defensive performance from the Lions last week, almost making up for the three picks that Nathan Rourke through.
Yeah, the biggest takeaway I took out of that game and talking to head coach Buck Pierce afterwards was the finish by the team.
you know they needed a turnover at the end of the game
Toronto was threatening there at the midfield strike
down by five couple minutes left
they wind up getting the turnover right
so again you look at the finish by the defense
being able to clutch up when they had to
but you know the offense as well
and as well as the offense is played
and it's hard to
you know look at the offense
and be critical of their performance
I mean what they have seven weeks in a row
with 30 points or more
but there are a couple of games in that stretch
the Hamilton game at home, where they got the ball back and, you know,
needed to put together a drive to seal the win, and they had a two-and-out.
And Hamilton got the ball back and wound up marching and winning the game.
And even the game against Ottawa, where they, you know, had the ball of whatever,
the 45-yard line and had a first and 10, and they could have sealed the deal there
with, you know, three or four first downs, and they had to settle for the field goal attempt,
which they missed.
Of course, Ottawa gets the ball, comes back, score.
So even the offense by, you know, finishing it, and that's one of the things that Nathan
Rourke talked about was, you know,
despite the subpar performance by their standards,
one of the bright spots was when the game was on the line,
they were able to string together some first downs and put the game away.
So for me, for me, the biggest takeaway out of that game
was the fact that they were finishing,
and hopefully it's a trend that continues.
So we talk about this game being a huge game for the BC Lions,
which it is, but it's also a big game for the Calgary Stampeders
who are not playing well coming into this.
What is happening with Vernon Adams and his Calgary stampeters?
Well, VA played a little better the last time out in the game against Montreal.
But I think the biggest thing, and you know, hearing some of the comments coming out of Calgary with Dave Dickinson,
is that these guys aren't playing aggressive enough, particularly on defense.
And, you know, they're a little bit tentative.
And I'm just wondering how much of the inexperience and youth of the stampeters,
particularly on the defensive side of the ball
is kind of coming through.
You know what it's like, I mean, you get off to a great start,
you're playing with House Money, and all of a sudden it's like,
hold on a second here, now we have pressure on us,
now we have to perform, now things are expected of us,
and I just think that, you know, this is a young group
that is going through that stretch right now,
just, you know, learning how to deal with the pressure,
and it's going to be interesting to see how they react against the BC Lions.
But, you know, like I said,
that's the biggest thing that Dave Dickinson has talked about
is the fact they've just been tentative.
They haven't been as aggressive as they were in the early parts of the season.
You know, you see defenses going in different directions, like the Lions,
and there was that stretch where they were getting gouged for like 30 plus points on a weekly basis,
slowly starting to make improvements.
And you see guys like Betts breaking out of their slumps.
And then you get a team like Calgary,
and you pointed it out that young defense,
they gave up 31 points to Edmonton three weeks ago.
There was that 52 points that the Lions hung on them two weeks ago.
Then they come back last week with those two games in the rearview mirror,
and they get gouged for 38 again
against Montreal. So it's a team that
the confidence of the defense, I imagine, too, must be
really low right now. Yeah, but I
think they're going to get a boost. And the reason
I say that I just got the depth charts, they just got
emailed to us about
an hour or so ago. They're going to get
a couple of boosts on defense. Number one, Lorenzo
Malden, they made the trade for the former outstanding
player from Ottawa, so he's going to
help the defensive line. They lost
Faler and Omalade, who's a big part of their
defense, one of their captains. He tore as Achilles, so
maybe Maldon helps fill that boyd.
And the other factor is that Markell Lee will join in the lineup and get the start at middle
linebacker.
He was rather effective for the first two, three games of the season, injured a bicep.
So they're pretty happy about getting him back into the lineup.
And he comes into the lineup at the expense of Adam Big Hill, who will not play Saturday
at B.C. plays.
But Lee and Mulden are two big additions for that defense, giving him a boost and hopefully
a little bit of a little bit of hope.
All right, what's your storyline as the Seahawks prepare to host Tampa Bay?
Is Lumenfield back after that win over the Saints, or do we need to see some more proof?
I probably want to see a little bit more.
Talk about Sunday.
I was talking to our good friend Scott Jones from the West Coast Auto Group,
but of course is one of our big sponsors on SportsNet 650.
He's doing the double dip.
He's going down for the Seahawks and the Meriters.
Wow.
Like, yeah, exactly.
It's going to be crazy down there because apparently,
Halford, you sent this along to me.
Seattle and Portland also have an MLS game at Lumen,
and that would be on Saturday.
So Seattle, Portland, that's going to be a bunch of people there.
Like, it is going to be insane in Seattle this weekend.
Yeah, and, you know, the Seahawks game should end by, what, 4 o'clock,
and the Mariner game starts at 5, but, man, so you're looking at everybody leaving
and everybody coming in.
So it's going to be a gong show,
but it should be a fun weekend for Seattle fans.
But getting back to the Seahawks,
I think this is going to be a really low-scoring affair
when you look at these two defenses that are rather effective,
particularly against the run.
They're both in the top six in the National Football League.
But, you know, I look at the Seahawks,
and, you know, what a story.
Sam Darnold, number one overall,
Baker Mayfield, number three overall,
two quarterbacks that have kind of bounced around
and obviously resuscitated their NFL careers.
But, you know, if I'm the Seahawks, I want to see if I'm going to get Jackson Smith and the Jigba going, and try to get Dulliwell to say that one.
It's like four weeks in a row, his production has gone down, right?
So obviously, you want to reverse that trend.
And, you know, like I said, I just think it's going to be a really tight game.
And if it's a tight game like this, which quarterback am I going to take in a tight game?
I'm sorry, but I'm probably going to have to go with Baker Mayfield on Tampa Bay.
And what a story Baker Mayfield has been for the Buccaneers.
man we talked to jean deckerhop the play by playboys of the bucks he'll be part of our pregame show on sunday and he was just talking about how everybody on that team just loves baker mayfield because he's just you know he's gritty he's tough he'll do whatever it takes to win and one of those guys that players just love playing for well it is an interesting quarterback matchup because both guys kind of flamed out with the original team that they were drafted by but they were teammates briefly it's Carolina sure
But then you look back on it and you're like,
yeah, I feel like that may be a Cleveland thing
or it might be a Jets thing.
Like, you know, seriously, I'm doing the hit with you right now.
Guess who's phoning me?
Dollar Wall?
Yeah, dollar wall.
Yeah, that sounds about right.
Get the little red button there.
Yeah, it's interesting because, well, I mean,
you forget that Mayfield even had a little stint with the Rams, right?
Oh, yeah.
So.
I revived his career.
Yeah.
So Rams, Cleveland, Carolina, fourth team.
And, yeah, like I said,
Hey, by the way,
have you seen that thing on YouTube
with Mayfield going undercover
with a whole bunch of fans?
Yeah, he's a funny guy.
He's funny.
He's got a really great personality.
I like him a lot.
Yeah, I do.
Same with me.
It just seems like one of those guys,
like I said,
if you remember that Bucks team,
you just love to play for that guy
because he's so great and he's so tough.
And he's overcome a lot as well.
I also want to point out,
I mentioned this earlier in the show,
but just to reiterate,
when you're working the Seahawks game,
make note of the uniform matchup in this one
because the Buccaneers are going to be wearing the creamsicle jersey,
the white creamsicle jerse, which are gorgeous.
And the Seahawks are going 1980s, Steve Largent, gray pants,
blue shirts with the green tint.
So it's going to be awesome viewing just from my anesthetics.
The only thing missing is going to be like the super wide shoulder pads, right?
And the old neck roll?
I miss the good neck roll.
The shoulder pads are incredible.
I love looking back.
some of the BC Lions, like shoulder pads from the 80s?
And I was like, how is that legal?
I guess shoulder pads were in there because, like,
women were wearing them in their business suits too.
Everyone was going around just delivering massive hits, apparently.
Well, you know, the thing getting back to the uniforms, like, think about this.
Of all the, you know, retros that we've seen, this is probably like, and I saw this on Twitter,
and I agree, the best all-time retro matchup.
When you agree?
Yeah, they're gorgeous.
I mean, it's perfect, right?
The Seahawks ones actually come in second for me
because the cremcicle bucks ones,
especially given how terrible those bucks teams were.
There's a real nostalgia where you remember those uniforms
because they were on one of the worst teams of all time,
but they're such beautiful uniforms.
Anyway, we're speaking to Bob the Moj Morge Marjanovich here
on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Moj isn't just a regular guest of the Halford & Brough show.
He's also a listener because you obviously heard J. Triano yesterday
because you sent along in your notes
that you, like I, have a J. Triano story.
Well, a couple of stories,
and you guys were talking about him.
He was the very first afternoon show host
on 1040 with Paul Carson.
It's crazy.
Guess who the producer was.
I have no idea.
Was it you?
It was me.
What?
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah.
I didn't know you were a producer.
I was on 1040,
the Good Life Station,
as it was known before,
it was purchased by Shumman Grand Slam Radio and all that.
I had a show for a year called the Sports Zone.
And then when the sports station took over the All-Sports Station format,
I got bumped off the air, and I was producing their show.
And we started, what, in February, May?
I can't remember.
And we went all the way through to September.
And then in September, they made the change to Pratt Night and the Afternoon.
But, yeah, I was a producer for the well.
But here's a story about it.
The Sports Zone is such a great name.
Like, that's so sports radio.
You're listening to the Sports Zone with the,
emoji.
Hey, somewhere out there,
they're hockey bucks
with the SportsZo logo on it.
Hey,
but I'll tell you one thing
about Triano,
you should have talked to them about.
What?
Have you guys ever heard
the story of the snowflakes?
Nope.
The snowflakes were an
intermural ball hockey team
at FFU.
Okay.
They're legendary
because they were like
the Philadelphia Flyers,
the Broad Street bullies
of intermural hockey.
Okay.
They had Triano on that squad,
Alan Chris Manson,
who runs Worcester golf club now,
Alan's sorry if I'm throwing you under the bus.
Frank Roberto,
who for many years owed and Langley
as a principal of high school out there,
I think Caravetta might have played for him
at the tail end of it,
but they were like the biggest
bunch of goons
that you could assemble.
No, I'm not joking.
Even Triano.
I don't know what it was.
When you put that snowflake jersey on,
you just transcended to somebody else.
It's amazing they were called the snowflakes first off.
Yeah.
They were called the snowflakes.
You show up for you.
You show up for you.
You show up for your intramural game.
You think you're going to have a nice, easy game because you're playing the flakes.
And then all of a sudden, the biggest goon team on the planet shows up.
Oh, yeah.
You ask anybody from Massachusetts at that time, and they will tell you stories about the snowflakes.
Caravetta, like, he caught the tail end of it, I think.
But the snowflakes, like, they were legendary.
And they were, like, like I said, they were thugs.
I mean, they were just brutal.
And, like, you wouldn't expect it because they're all nice guys, right?
But once they put that uniform on, they just, you know, transformed into these thugs,
these goons.
They're like the Charleston Chiefs of floor hockey.
Okay, Moge, normally we do ask us anything Friday food version with you,
but I think we're going to ask this question of everybody for the remainder of the show.
And it's about upper body and lower body injuries and the delineation.
What's the marker?
Where's the guide, right?
What constitutes an upper body injury and a lower body injury?
Where's the body's equator when it comes to injuries?
Beltline.
Easy.
Beltline, okay.
So anything south of the body.
belt line is lower body?
Yeah, pretty much.
Okay. I've seen some old guys that wear their belts above their belly buttons,
though. So if this,
if it's like Lee Trevino's belt line, what is it?
Oh, man. Do you ever see like some of those old people, like especially like the older
photos from the 70s or the 80s or whatever, like 90s and like they wear their belts
almost up to like their nipples?
Yep. Yeah. Well, how about the old foot, the football coaches with their polyester shorts that
were up to their armpits pretty much? At that point,
Oh, how about like the plaid jackets?
You know the best part of what we're looking at some of these old photos sometimes?
It's the guy's just smoking tarts all the time.
On the field, on the sidelines.
Oh, speaking of that, did you see the Cleveland Guardians after they clinched their playoff spot?
They were banging down heaters.
Oh, really?
Yeah, it's only baseball.
I know.
In the dressing room, I mean, their run has now been abbreviated.
They're no longer in the playoffs.
But for that brief moment, they were going old school.
Yeah, against the tigers that were like, we were really out of breath.
Isn't that crazy?
I mean, you battle for, like, and I was thinking about this, you know,
the Guardians battle for two months to get into the playoffs.
Like, just battle every single day.
And like three days later, it's over.
That's it.
Right?
It's so quick.
Well, these best of five series can be over real quick, too.
I mean, the game five for the Blue Jays and Yankees is next Friday.
Yep.
I've always said this about baseball in the postseason and the regular season.
and I think the best example is that
Mariner team that won 122 games
and maybe the Arizona Diamondbacks
when they beat the Yankees and whatever that was
the 1 or 02
pitching depth will win you
the regular season and the Mariners had
great pitching depth that one year where they won
those whatever 120 games 1 through 5
however
you need two horses
in the playoffs to win
and when Diamondbacks beat the Yankees
that year it was Schilling and Johnson
their third starter was Miguel Batis
stuff. I mean, like, it was a
complete plumber, right? I mean, they just
rode Schilling and Johnson, and I think that's when you
get into the postseason, you need a horse
or at least two, two big aces
to get you through. And, you know, it's different now
I think maybe a little bit, because
the fact that, you know, teams rely on
bullpen so much more, but still
you're going to need maybe one or two
really good starters that can
give you five or six innings, and
you know, just win ballgames for you.
I think if you have a really good
bullpen, you can say, okay, that's one
ace like that would be equating to the old school but yeah that's that's going to be the
interesting well one of the many interesting things about the yankees and uh the blue jays series
like i think we'll say gossman is the blue jays ace all right well who's number two could
it be a kid yeah savage and can you know on the on the yankee side obviously max freed
is their ace but can slittler give another performance like he
did last night because that
I mean that was I know AJ
already talked about it but like that was
that will go down in Yankees lore
as one of the great
legendary performances and they've
had a few good performances in the postseason
he's now in that pantheon was like I mentioned
it earlier. Bucky Dan, Aaron Boone
those single games because you have no idea what his career is going
to be like. Yeah who knows right? The thing with Dan and Boone is they weren't
Hall of Famers by any stretch they just had these
moments for the Yankees and now you've got
little known Cam Schlittler
Wow, we're doing really well today.
You know what?
The thing is, just stop bringing his name up
because I actually picked him up in my rotissory pool is here,
and I dropped him after like three weeks
and somebody else picked him up, so he might come back to haunt me.
You know, it's interesting, though,
can you look at baseball in the way the pitching staffs are structured now?
You know, who's the biggest fan of analytics
and the way pitching staffs have gone?
Owners.
Yeah.
And you know why?
Because they don't have to pay for that horse
who pitches 240 innings a year
because nobody even cracks 200 anymore.
you don't have to pay for that ace reliever for the most part
because with analytics now they're bringing in the best relief pitcher in the seventh inning
so you don't know the saves are kind of spread out amongst most teams
I mean some teams have just the old legitimate old school closer but man you look at the
way the pitching staffs are structured and I'm telling you if you're an owner you're like
I love this because no one is putting up those monster numbers that force you to pay them big bucks
Moge this was great buddy thanks for taking the time to do it as always enjoy the
weekend. It's going to be a lot of fun.
You know what? Great stuff. And we broke the streak.
Not a food question today. I know. We did it.
We did it together. Thanks, buddy. Next week.
We'll start the next one.
Take there, guys. Have a great weekend.
Bob the Mojumarjanovich here on the Halford and Brough Show on Sportsnet.
650. Okay, quick reset here.
Final hour of the program is on the horizon. Did you want to jump in?
No. Go ahead.
We've got Dollywall is going to join us at 8 for some Canucks talk.
Refresh my memory, what we're going to get into with Dollywall again?
Final preseason game tonight against the Emmington Oilers
and we'll talk about craps off
and maybe make a Danny Millions reference.
So Dollywell is going to join us at 8.
At 8.30, we're going to do what we learns
and Ask Us Anything Anything.
It's a reminder. It's Ask Us Anything Friday on the program.
We have not anointed a winner yet for Ask Us Anything Friday.
There have been some good submissions for sure.
There have been some really good ones.
So the talent level and the ability to win, it's high right now.
Dunbar Lumber TechSline is 650, 650.
Hashtag at AUA and put a pizza emoji into your text.
Get them in a week.
You can still win a $100 gift card to AJ's pizza on East Broadway.
Here isn't ask us anything.
Okay.
It doesn't have a pizza emoji, but I'm going to read it anyway.
You're stuck on an island and you have to pick between Drance or Dollywall to join you.
Who are you picking and why?
Okay.
There's a lot to unpack here.
Oh, boy.
I think I just swim.
Swimming an option
Oh, it doesn't look good
I'm still swimming
Take my chances with the shark
Who? Okay, first question
And never mind the
You know, conversation part of it
But who had
The conversation part is a big part of it
You know what else is?
Survival skills
Yeah, I know, but would you want to?
That's true
Who has worse survival skills?
I'll pick him.
Yeah
I mean, I think
Dolly might be an easier
conversation
In the long run
Just because it's
Wow
You're more straightforward
What's a word I'm looking for?
But he also might be the more likely of the two to get me killed, so I don't know, I don't know about his survival skills.
Like, I think grants his survival skills, he might be able to just math some stuff out and make it work.
Like dolly stand would be like three logs, like trying to stack on top of each other.
Yeah.
It just wouldn't work.
Trapped under a log real quick.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
How did that happen?
That's a really interesting one.
You'd be talking to a volleyball in 30 seconds.
Honestly, that is really tough.
It is a tough one. That's a good question.
Who's dead body could you turn into a raft?
Drans or Dollywall?
I have an answer.
Which one's more buoyant?
I also have an answer.
I'm going to be a mature broadcaster and go to commercial.
We have a lot more to get to on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
We're going to talk to Dollywall next.
Then we're going to ask us anythings and what we learns at 831 final hour.
The final hour or the final show of the week.
You're listening to the Halford & Brough show on SportsNet 650.
safety.
