Halpert and Brough of the morning is brought to you by Sands and Associates.

much lower payments and financial peace of mind.

A debt-free freedom hat trick.
Nice.
Is it real hats on the hands for that?
I don't know.
You can try it.
It's the worst that could happen.
You got to build up your funds first.
You lose a hat, I guess.
You're in hat debt at that point.
We are in our...
Sands can help you with that too.
That's true.
Then get you a new hat.
We are in our two of the program.
Our two is brought to you by Jason hominock at jason.
Mortgage. If you love giving me the banks more of your money, then don't let Jason
shop around to find the perfect mortgage for you. Visit them online at jason.orgage.
We're coming to live from the Kintech studio, Kintech footwear, and orthotics working together
with you in step. To the Power West Industries hotline, we go. Our next guest is the owner
and proprietor of AJ's pizza on East Broadway. It's AJ here on the Halford and Brough show on
Sportsnet 650. What up, AJ? What is going on? So, Fiesta Fridays, love it. Fiesta
Friday is the best. Not as good as football Sunday at AJ's though. We were there last
weekend. We had a really interesting conversation about watching the game out at a bar
restaurant. Are you a sound, when the sound is on, what goes without saying, big screen
sound is on. During the breaks, do you like the sound being on, the sound being off, or do you
like a little music being interjected into your programming? No, I just want the sound on
the whole time. I know my lovely wife and business partner likes to cut it off, but what
happens is then when you're not paying attention, you're losing part of the game.
The sound has to be on.
We had this conversation last week.
Our buddy Martinago.
Someone has to be really on it.
Someone has to be on it.
At the bar.
If they're going to cut the sound at the break, someone has to be on it because I'm always like,
the second the game comes back, put the sound back on.
Put the sound back on.
Put the sound back on.
Right.
A dog saw it.
A dog witnessed it.
And my wife's graded a lot of things, but I don't know.
You just got to leave it up.
So I bring this up because we talked a lot last week about places to go to watch
the game, because I had a very bad experience a couple
weeks ago. Not at AJ's. A.J.'s is the best.
Right. I, you know,
I am very impressed
with your lovely wife's ability
to fade the sound in and out
and time it out. But I think the bigger point
here is that you got to go to AJ's
to watch the game. Don't just stop and to get pizza
before and after, especially with Kinnock's season
on the horizon, and especially
this weekend, because we got NFL
all day Sunday. What do you guys have on tap at AJ's
this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday
so people can come in and watch your games with sound on?
Well, I mean, huge Mariners weekend, right?
Yeah, right.
On top of, on top of obviously, you know, the ducks against Oregon State.
And then you got, obviously, NFL all day Sunday, which is going to be awesome.
And yes, the sound will be on.
Beautiful.
AJ, thanks for doing this day, bud.
We really appreciate it.
Enjoy all the games this weekend.
And we will do this again next Friday.
Take care.
Everybody, have a great weekend.
Yeah, you too.
Thanks, buddy.
That's AJ from AJ's pizza on East Broadway.
That's an ask us anything.
When you go to the bar, do you like having the commercials on in the background?
Do you like having the sound dropped?
Do you like the musical interludes in between?
Martin Ego, our good buddy, was there.
He's like, I'm very impressed with the fading in and out of yacht rock during the breaks.
I like the musical interludes.
I don't have a problem with the sound being on the entire time,
but I will admit, like, it caught my attention.
I'm like, oh, that's kind of clever.
I think that's good, and I think every bar that calls itself a sports bar
needs to have a person that, first of all,
knows how to work the TV?
Because how many times have you been at a bar
where you've been like, hey, can you put this game on?
And they're like, oh.
Too many times, to be honest.
It's happened too many times.
Or can you turn the volume up?
There would be like, we have a rule here about the sound.
And it's like, well, I'm the only person here.
So can you turn the sound on, please?
Are you not occasionally amazed at how difficult it is for these establishments just to do the most basic things when it comes to sports watching?
Especially when it's sports.
Like if you say, if you have a bunch of TV,
So you've invested in it
And you want people to come in and watch sports
While they spend money
You should know how to put any game on
And you should have an expert there
And they should always be like the designated TV
Slash sports expert
It's a rule of three
And you're like can you put the Mariners game on
And they'll be like
Is that football?
Big screens
Games on
Sound on
It's all you have to do
And nachos that are palatable
And eight slices of Detroit
By the way, that's how you know
if the Canucks are hot or not.
Yeah, that's a good point.
If the sound is on.
I mean, I was walking into bars
in the last few years of the game
wasn't even on.
Can you put the Canucks game on?
Not really.
No.
We have a rule against that.
We're going to pass.
Tends to angry up the blood of the customers.
Try to create an uplifting atmosphere
between our clientele.
So if you want to win
the $100 gift card to AJ's Pizza on East Broadway,
get your ask us anything's in.
Hashtag him, A, UA, put a pizza emoji into the text.
$100 gift card to go eat some pizza and watch games at the sound on.
Let's do some ask us.
Okay, Patrick and Langley,
Senator Reed Elementary is having our Terry Fox run today.
What was your favorite school run?
I've been at schools that had a turkey trot,
and one had a milk run.
We had a milk run.
Yeah, I knew that as I've got a stitch run.
I don't get stitches anymore.
Is that more of a kid thing to get a stitch?
Yeah.
I got a stitch in my side.
How's that even, like, do we know why that happens?
Lack of fitness, or?
Yeah, is there some sort of medical professional out there that knows why stitches happen?
I always think it's because you drank too much water.
I don't think it's that.
I mean, I think of stitches is like you're getting stitches to stitch something up.
What are you talking about?
When you run, you get that like side pain?
Do you mean like kind of like a Charlie horse of sort of?
Like a cramp?
No, like a crampia.
It's like a side pain in the side.
Is it like, would you say like in your obliques almost?
Sure, I don't have them, but.
No, no, no.
In your love handles?
It's right in the flat
Oh, my love handles
I pulled another one
Anyway, I don't like any of the run
I used to like the runs
Where I'd you know
Me and my buddies would set off car alarms
By the way, on the subject to the Terry Fox run
Because that was the one that we always participated
And it's still to this day
And it's a very obvious worthy endeavor
For who I consider the greatest Canadian of all time
Do you see Thomas Mueller in his Terry Fox
hoodie?
There's a guy that gets it
Totally. He's got it from day one
Yeah. And you know what?
the white cabs, like Danny used to get it.
He used to understand the cultural fabric of the city.
They're like Thomas, put this on.
He's got such a good attitude.
Thomas Miller has a great attitude.
He may be one of the happiest guys on the planet.
I know for a German too.
All very, but for a.
Me Germans aren't all.
Yeah.
Except in this case where he is all rainbows and sunshine.
Every superstar, every superstar athlete should take a moment to watch him
how he's ingrained himself into a team that, let's be honest,
is beneath the status that he is achieved in the sport.
I love the white caps.
I think they're doing a great job this year,
but going to play for a team with very little MLS history and success,
and to dive in as head first as he has is quite a remarkable thing.
Anyway, I do want to add this.
It's possibly why he's been very successful in life, having a good attitude.
Seems important.
Yeah, being genuine and earnest about things.
What's that like?
I don't know.
Me Germans aren't all smiles and sun.
That's what he says when he takes a PK.
That's true.
The question comes up, but who should we give it to?
He just plays that clip.
Then they give him the penalty.
But I didn't want to say that Terry Fox documentary comes out in November, the new one,
Run Terry Run.
It's got formerly unearthed footage, never before seen footage and unheard audio interviews.
Because the Terry Fox documentary industry, there's a lot of content out there.
I found the documentary that I used to watch in elementary school.
I used to make little Jason cry a little bit in class
and it was the documentary that had the Holly's song on it
something about a brother
it was made in 1981 and I'm sure
I'm sure people listening to this show right now
had watched that documentary in elementary school
or high school and I sent it to my buddy
and I was like you got to watch this
and this is the one I used to watch
because I know it like Steve was it
Steve Nash did it? Didn't one?
Steve Nash did the one 30 for 30 for 30 and I was like
Yeah that's good
Yep but that one
Well I can't remember what the song is called
You're referring to the 1981 documentary Terry Fox
I had a dream and the song is the Holley's
He ain't heavy he's my brother
Right yeah
Every time I hear that song
Get choked up a little bit
Yeah I got a little choked up
Okay so Jora
this is going to be real quick
But I texted back
I was like this question actually made me angry
He said would you rather win your fantasy league
Or have the team you cheer for win the Super Bowl
That would make you angry
That is infuriating
And anyone who chooses their fantasy league
Over their actual team
Don't listen to the show anymore
I don't want you to listen to the show
That's craziness.
Fantasy football.
I don't care how much money you win either.
I'll maybe allow it if you're in trouble.
What will work on the show?
Can we still work on the show if we take our fantasy team?
That's crazy.
Not a craziness.
That is crazy.
I told you that I'm in that very serious, very intricate, very deep fantasy football league
that Drance runs, right?
And I'm kind of like the, I think I'm older than everyone else.
And I also don't take it as seriously, despite the fact that I'm in the weeds
with everybody else.
so I just made a trade last night on a whim
and I can tell that it rankled a lot of the people in the league
because it's like I it was like I think I basically overpaid for
because I wanted to win now so I mortgaged the future
and like they don't like it like it like this guy's not taking it seriously
enough is Jimetting in your yeah I like to bring I like that
it's aggressive I we live day to day in my fantasy league man
you know what's amazing I love the fact that you're in that making those sorts of deals
because I know any fantasy league
that Drance puts together
will overthink every little move.
They have an intervention with you.
Halford, we don't think you're taking this fantasy.
They're trying to be nice about it.
Alford's wearing a cowboy hat.
Making moves.
Shooting up guns in the background.
Smoking, do cigars.
Yeah, I live day to day.
So the funny part is like,
I can see the line of questioning being like,
oh, I don't really get this one.
And I know they want to call me out for making a crazy trade.
Can you get kicked out of your fantasy league?
For what?
No, I'm saying, could it happen?
I think the only way...
Because if it could, you should try and make it happen.
That would be very funny.
I think the only way you should realistically be able to get kicked out of a fantasy league is if you're a non-participant.
If you, like, go into a week and you haven't fielded a proper lineup, you've got gaps in your lineup, you're making crazy trades where it's like you're definitely giving away talent, not getting anything in return, sabotage.
Then you have grounds for it.
But like, I keep...
I want to say to these guys, I mean, you guys know the key part of this is the word fantasy.
Like, this is all just make-believe, right?
We can have fun with this.
The stakes are very, very minimal.
Okay, unsigned to ask us anything.
Morning guys, do you think, if the Knows a bit of a run-on sentence here,
do you think if the Canucks are below 500 and out of a playoff spot with PD not playing well,
and he hasn't been able to find his game?
And the production from his is not good.
By the Tread deadline, do you think there could be a management change?
Yes.
Yeah.
Just say, it doesn't go well by the midway.
point of the season could there be a management change yeah yeah and i mean that's just obvious i know
patrick johnston also reported something along those lines in the province newspaper but
yeah by the new year he's like if it's not or even december i think so i's not going well by
december if you look at the hierarchical structure of the organization i mean alveen is kind of set up to
be the fall guy right i'm not i'm not speaking out of church saying anything crazy here like
the president of hockey ops has another bullet in the chamber and he's got one more
move and that's you get rid of the general manager
they've exercised the coaching cards
twice um so
you know you're kind of
and I guess
you could maybe
have like an exit clause
where you get to hire another coach
because Tocket left you you didn't get rid of talk it
like oh they they fired Boodrome
brought in their guy and then their guy left
right they wanted to keep him
so he may have
another coaching change in the cards
I'd say no
if you had played it that way or
like, well, that one doesn't count because we
tried to keep the coach and he left because he didn't
want to be here anymore. Why, I should stop talking.
Which is so much worse, too.
It's just so much worse when he's to say it out loud.
You're like, the guy we like, that guy?
He didn't want to stay. He didn't believe in us.
So that one doesn't count. I got one more.
It didn't like the situation. One to take off.
Yeah, like, I... This isn't good.
I would start out my... I'll back up.
I'll back up. I would start out my defense
of the movie, like, in that. And then I'd be like,
wait, am I making this worse for myself? But whatever.
Like, anyway, I do
Oh, and also our Star Defenseman. Actually, no, that's not you're talking
about that right now. This team makes us laugh, doesn't it?
It is kind of funny. We have fun with them.
Sean with Anaskus anything, and I,
this is Anaskus, anything.
Do you guys brush your teeth in the shower?
My roommate in college did it, and at first I thought it was insane.
But as the years have gone on, I have slowly converted.
It's more efficient. It's easy to wash your mouth out,
and all around an enjoyable experience.
Okay.
I only brush my teeth in the day.
shower. You take one shower a week. I have never actually done that before. I share, yeah,
I brush my teeth in the shower. I don't. I'll try it and get back to you. No, it is. Here's
something I heard the other day, which I have a real problem. Okay. You're not supposed to rinse
after you brush your teeth. Right. You're supposed to allow. Well, it depends on kind of
toothpaste you used, too, though. Also, potential problem. I have an electric toothbrush. That's fine.
Bring those into the shower? It's not like bringing a toaster in there, buddy. We're
Will it not short it out?
Hold on, if it gets water in it, will it not short it out?
Laddie's toaster in the bathtub edition.
It's not meant to be dunked in water, I'm sure.
Don't dunk in water then.
In the shower.
Laddie's hospitalized, guys.
He was trying to brush a seat in the shower.
Let me walk you through this.
There's a lot of people that bring their electric toothbrush into the shower.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay, I would assume it would break the toothbrush.
We're going to get canceled, dude.
Yeah, don't do that.
Don't do what he's saying.
Just get an electric toothbrush that's waterproof.
Don't do what he's talking about.
But turn your back to the water of the shower and brush your teeth with
while they're hitting the back of you so it won't hit your toothbrush.
Then when it's time to rinse,
or maybe you don't rinse, I don't even think.
Yeah, you're not supposed to rinse. I find that gross, though.
Well, no, because the toothpaste, especially if it has, like,
I know.
What's the word?
The whitening?
No, well, yeah, but I was thinking of fluoride.
If it's like a fluoride toothpaste, the dentist is like,
no, man, just keep the fluoride in your mouth.
It's good for you.
All right, let's move on here.
Austin and Langley, ask us anything.
How many jobs are actually winnable this camp for the Canucks?
I feel like a six defenseman is one
and he talks about
maybe it's DPD with
four board or DPD with
Mancini or Willander if he wins a job
what about the forward group? Is it just
fourth line wing? No I don't think it's fourth line wing
I think I think fourth line center
is up for grabs because I think
they're they're gonna give
we kind of talked about this earlier in the show
and if you missed it earlier in the show
there were three
first round picks of the Vancouver Canucks
that were all put in positions to impress
and it was Lechromackie
who was skating on a line with
Heedel and Cain
and Garland was actually not
among the top two lines
there's a top line in Group A and a top line
in Group B
the other one was
Coots was between Bains
and Sherwood
which could in theory be a fourth line
and the third and final one was
Willander was skating with Derek foreboard
so I think the Canucks are saying
okay
not that these spots are yours to lose
because I don't think they're that
but they're like hey
we're going to put you in a position to impress us
and then we'll make the decision.
I think they'd love to have, for example,
Wellander make the team
because it gives them another right shot on defense.
And I think they'd love for Coots to make the team
because it would give them a right shot centerman,
which they wouldn't have.
And they would love for Lecker-O-Mackie
to show well enough to be played in the top six
and maybe keep them around for power play time
because they need the scoring.
I just don't know if any of those three
are actually up for the job.
job if they're ready for it.
Coots, probably not.
The other two are closer, for sure.
I don't know about Willander, man.
I don't know about Willander's closer than Coots.
Yeah, I don't understand why people are talking up Coots already.
Like, he's so young.
Because they need.
They need it.
Yeah, but it's not, let's be realistic here.
Like, he's so young.
You know why it's happening.
He's the new toy in the box.
I get it, but I'm just saying that's, come on.
You know, help put more pressure on him.
Yeah, that'll work.
Yeah.
I'll give him plenty of looks in the precinct.
Put him in a spot where he might be physically overwhelmed.
That's always fun.
I want to add one more thing to this, though.
Okay.
So Sats reporting from the summer on Atu Ratu,
that the Canucks were kind of loath to include him in any trade
because they valued what he brought to the table.
I assume that means that he's going to be on the roster.
The devil's advocate is if he's not,
does that not signify maybe like a chasm or like a gap
in their perceived value of the player?
and then his actual value to the organization.
Like you're not willing to part with this guy in a package
that could have got you something in return,
yet he's not still established as an opening night
and then full-time NHLer.
He's also waivers eligible,
so you probably lose him on.
You probably have to trade him.
If he doesn't make the team,
you probably have to trade him.
Like to me,
he almost has to be there for a multitude of reasons, right?
I mean, he's still super young
and he showed flashes last year that he could belong.
He's not super young.
Super young is Coots.
Well, he's still 22.
I mean, he's quite young.
He's going to be 23, like, real soon, though.
But 22 is when Hoaglander had had his 24 goals season, right?
But I'm just saying like...
It's time for him.
It's time for him to make the team.
I agree with Alford.
If he doesn't make this team, you know, there is something going on there,
and it's probably to do with his skating.
Like, he's closing in on, like, close to 200 games in the American League.
He had a playoff run last year.
But he looked good last year.
I think he will make the team.
He might be the extra forward, but I think, I think Coots is a bit of a wildcard.
Look, there's been one day of training cap
Okay, we don't need to jump to any conclusions
Mancini's my new
Akito Hirosei
And I was going to say like
What's the other guy?
What's the Ford that I liked that I was right about
That I was right about
First on the Van Wagon
You were right about?
Cozmeco, there we go
So I'm one for two with my picks
How were you right about him?
He was traded
Well, before he came
At the very beginning
You know what?
He did have a fun for us
I got on the Kuzmanko train early.
But a lot of people are.
He was ripping it up in the K.
I know.
I'm not saying it was a hot take or something.
I'm just saying I'm one for two with my picks, but Mancini's my new guy.
Like, I think he's going to be in the top six.
He's going to be in the top six defense.
Kuzmenko's totally back now.
He's revitalized his career.
Yeah, it's amazing.
One of the, again, one of the most unprecedented and unpredictable things was Kuzmanko turning into a pointing game guy.
But I'm telling you, Mancini is going to make it.
He's going to be one of their go-to D men this year.
He's 100% not making it.
from Richmond.
Jake Debrusk, quote unquote, lost street cred
after the video of him buying Pokemon surfaced.
You know, you can actually play some audio
of Jake DeBress talking about Pokemon.
It was kind of funny.
I like the one where he was like,
he's like, yeah, I've had to buy lunch and coffee for everyone.
No, no, they look at me differently now, that's for sure.
I definitely lost some, I don't know,
some, yeah, some street cred.
Yeah, I definitely lost some street cred there.
So I'm earning that back.
I don't know how.
I pay for coffees yesterday and lunch.
So I don't know if I'm just paying for everything now.
I'm paying for my friends on this team.
It's getting a little suspect back going on.
Yeah, his friends are like, oh, you got big Pokemon money.
You can pay for lunch, too.
Spread around some of the wealth there, big guy.
So Ken from Richmond asks, what hobby or thing might lose you street cred among your peers?
I don't know.
With my peers, reading.
Yeah.
Literacy.
Brushing.
teeth.
Look at Mr.
Book over there.
Yeah.
I'm surprised.
I mean,
here's the thing.
It'd be hilarious
if your breasts got all
the guys addicted to
Pokemon cards and like
foot's coming into the locker room
in game.
They're down 6-0.
Yeah.
They're all playing Pokemon.
He has to address them.
Put the damn Charzart away.
He has to address them
like a third grade class.
He's like, that's it.
No Pokemon during the breaks.
Okay?
Here's a thing.
That'd make them a little bit more likable,
actually.
When?
We fell apart because
were you addicted to?
into video games?
No.
No. Pokemon.
Somehow worse.
When...
Team implodes due to
Pokemon card addiction.
When this quote-unquote story...
I don't want to say broke.
Why is say, quote, unquote?
Because it was...
Yes, it was.
I guess.
It was interesting.
It's one of the few interesting things
to happen this offseason.
Daily Hive's biggest story of the summer.
Right.
It was the daily-hive-iest story
to ever Daily Hive.
When...
When it broke,
the one thing that kind of struck me
was that
Debrusk seemed totally fine with this being out there
and him being like identified as a Pokemon enthusiast,
a pokey enthusiast.
He didn't seem to be like shying away from it
or being like, I don't want my friends to find out about the phrase
is poca maniac, Alford.
I've heard, I've heard, I've heard the phrase is poca mania.
Okay, thank you.
I've heard Debrose who's like a very nice guy.
It seems like it.
Yeah, yeah.
And I think maybe like a bit naive to the ways of the world
because when I heard it, I'm like your teammates are going to kill you
when you come back.
Like that's something that they're,
And it's not in a bad way, but like if you...
I like how he called it a side hustle.
Yeah, I picked up a move of a side hustle.
I'm like, you don't need one.
Side hustles are for people that need side hustles.
Yeah, you make you rich.
You don't need to do this.
You're just rich and bored.
Yeah, like, I think you're going to be okay.
My side hustle is collecting wine.
Yeah.
Okay.
Adam, the former bath guy,
would you rather spend the entire season talking about the future of Quinn Hughes
or potential practice facility located?
Oh, man.
Neither.
Is there neither?
I guess you have to do one or the other.
Who mentioned it yesterday that Quinn Hughes should demand a practice facility
and he'll stay if they build one?
They name it the Quinn Hughes practice facility?
And then they build one like overnight.
Like that's how it gets done.
Quinn Hughes has to go to them and be like, I'll stay if you build a practice facility
within this next month.
It'd be like the house that Ned got, though.
It's just a complete disaster.
That's the room with electricity.
It has too much electricity, so don't go in there.
We have a rink, no ice, though.
No ice, we're still working on the ice.
All right.
This is your master bedroom.
Plywood boards.
We got a lot more to get to.
Is this ice?
No, it's dirt.
On the Alfred and Breff Show on SportsNet 650.
Coming up, we're going to turn our attention to the BC Lions.
Bob the Mojibarjanovich is going to join the program from Calgary.
It is the Lions.
It is the Stampeders from Calgary tonight.
Lions looking to get back to 500 for the first time in a while.

It's the Moge here on the Halford & Breff Show on Sportsnet, 650.
What's up, Moge?
Good morning, gentlemen.
Happy Friday from Calgary.
Oh, lovely Calgary.
Tell us about the BC Lions who are going into this game in Calgary.
Looking to get back to 500, going up against a Calgary team that's looking for their sixth home win of the season,
which would be the most in the CFL.
And the Lions are short-handed going into this one, Moj.
Yeah, it's going to be a Herculean effort if they do win.
They come into this game without running back James Butler, who leads to the CFL in rushing.
Left tackle, Jarrell Broxton, who comes out ranked as one of the top CFL linemen in August by the good folks at pro football focus.
Arguably their best lineman.
He will not play due to a foot injury.
he sustained in practice on Monday.
Javon Katoi's been troubled by an ankle the last month or so,
and that finally knocked him out of the lineup,
so he won't play.
And that's a tough loss.
I say that because Javon Katoi is one of those players who, you know,
he can line up as a tight end,
he can help you out in blocking schemes,
and of course you can line up as a receiver.
So Kieran Fassant comes in who doesn't have that skill set that Katoi has.
So, yeah, they've got some challenges on offense.
Were you encouraged by the win over Ottawa, or do you still think there are significant concerns on the defensive side of the ball?
I still think there's significant concerns.
I mean, you know, it was a good winning against Ottawa.
We saw a lot from the defensive line, and I think that masked some of the issues in the secondary.
But, you know, they got seven sacks.
They got to the quarterback, which is good.
But still, when I look at a secondary that allows a quarterback to go 30 of 35 for over 300 yards,
I think Dustin Crum through for 307.
Addison had, I think, over 100.
I know he had over 100 yards.
Hardy landed right on 100.
So you got two receivers breaking the 100-yard barrier.
Yeah, there's still concerns when it comes to the secondary.
And hopefully they can start, you know, jelling.
I know that T.J. Lee will get a lot of playing time tonight.
They brought him back.
I don't know how much he has left.
We're going to find out.
I guarantee you Dave Dickinson is going to find out pretty quickly.
because obviously they'll target T.J.,
but, you know, I think with him,
one of the things that he does bring is experience
and hopefully a calming influence
with some of the younger players in the secondary.
I mentioned off the top of the show
that this is the first time that the Lions and Stamps
are going to face each other this year,
which means it's Big Play VA.
It's his first chance to go up against his former team,
Vernon Adams Jr., now the quarterback for the Calgary
Stampeders. How much chatter is there around Calgary
about him going up against his old team?
Well, you know, here's the thing.
they're going to say all the right things,
but I guarantee you this,
this game's a little different for Vernon Adams.
I mean, he goes up against the team that, you know,
decided they had to make a choice of quarterback.
It was either going to be Vernon Adams Jr. or Nathan Rourke.
They went with Nathan Rourke.
So, you know,
for people who think that this is just another game for Vernon Adams,
it's not.
So, you know,
it's a situation where they're going to,
they don't face off against one another.
It's not Nathan versus Vernon,
but, you know,
clearly for Vernon, I think the big thing tonight is just getting a W
and showing the folks in B.C. that they made the wrong choice.
Moja, I hear you've got some thoughts on the newest captain
of the New York Rangers, J.T. Miller.
Yeah, it was interesting hearing a lot of the comments earlier in the week
with J.T., you know, being named the captain of the Rangers.
But here's the thing that I, you know, the point that I'll make
is when you have somebody put faith in you
and give you responsibility.
You feel like you have to honor that faith,
that you have to live up to that responsibility.
So I think making J.T. the captain in New York is kind of an example of that.
And clearly he doesn't want to disappoint the organization.
He doesn't want to disappoint the people that put faith in him.
So maybe it'll just make J.T. a better leader, right?
A better person, I guess, in a way.
So I think that's one thing that you have to.
look at when people do put that type of trust in you, you feel like you're, you know,
there's an obligation there to live up to that trust and show that they made the right
choice. So it'll be interesting to see it all works out.
Can I put an alternate theory out there with regards to J.T. and the captain? I brought this up
earlier in the week. I brought this up earlier in the week. I know what you're going to say and
I think I agree with you. I think Chris Drury traded for J.T. Miller and then made J.T. Miller
So he could be J.T. Miller. I got a feeling he doesn't want him to change.
change a single thing about his approach because that team does not care for his team that team
he wants it yelled at i think it lacked a lot of the fire that miller brings and and i know we're
going to dance on some dangerous ice here but holding people to account i think he wants that in
that room as opposed to not have that in that room your thoughts moj i think yeah like you know
it's interesting um because i just kind of thought of something that buck
Pierce told me about T.J. Lee this week.
What's that?
And that is, if you're going to be a leader and you're going to be vocal,
you have to go about it the right way.
And I don't think J.T. Miller all of a sudden is going to go into a shell or anything
like that because he's the name captain.
But I think now that he has that responsibility, that kind of comes into play.
And if you are going to be that vocal guy and do what you got to do,
but you have to do it in a right way, you have to do it in a respectful way, so to speak.
So I think it all kind of ties in
in terms of what you're saying as well.
Well, I think the Canucks embraced J.T. Miller being J.T. Miller
and then it went sideways on them
because it was just a bad combination
between him and another teammate,
a really bad combination there.
Lest we forget, lest we forget,
that according to multiple reports,
that a lot of what happened last year,
J.T. Miller being that authoritative voice
in the room was by design
because the management wanted the players
to be the ones delivering certain messages
and not have it come from the coaches
and the executive staff, right?
So in a lot of ways, I think
I'm just making an argument for argument's sake,
but Miller could have said,
like, in a large part,
I was doing what I was asked to do.
Yeah, yeah.
It didn't go the way that everyone wanted it to,
but I was following orders.
And then according to things that you and I have heard,
Alfred, it's like the issue was that just that Miller couldn't let it go.
Like he couldn't let it go.
you know it just oh he was he was empowered to be j t miller
but then the advisable thing would be like all right
this hasn't worked so we need to try something else
but he kept on being jt miller so moj
adam foot's now in charge of all of this what have you thought about the way
adam foot's going about things so far well i mean first off
any time you get appointed as the head coach you got to get your leadership group
to buy him that that's rule number one i mean whatever you're selling
your leadership group has to buy in and then basically they sell that to the rest of the team
and hold the rest of the team accountable.
But it was interesting hearing him talk about a few things during the press conference.
The one thing that, you know, that kind of impressed me when he mentioned the word contract, right?
And I've heard that term used before with coaches when they're talking about leadership groups.
And it was interesting hearing Adam Foote talk about that and talking about his meetings with Hughes
and Pedersen and Demko and other players and, you know, all these Zoom calls.
But to me, that's a real key word because when you're talking about making a contract with your players and your leadership group, I mean, that's a commitment.
There's no vagueness to it.
I mean, you have set down certain standards that you want to see upheld and that you want to see met and that you have your leadership group on board.
I think it's good.
And, you know, the other thing, too, that I like about it is when you do that with your group, it gives them an investment.
It makes them feel like part of it.
I mean, so many times I've seen it.
it happened in football. I've seen it happen in hockey
where, you know, you get this guy that comes in, it's
my way or the highway, and
basically doesn't take any input
from his group. Well, when you do that,
you don't allow
that leadership group to feel
part of it or to field invested.
You know, so far, so good with foot. I mean, it's
early. I mean, it's training camp, fellas.
Everybody's looking through, you know,
everything through rose-colored lenses.
So we'll see how this
team, you know, reacts to adversity
when they're on a four-game losing streak.
November, right? So it's all fine and dandy now, but the real test is going to be when the season
starts and they actually go through adversity.
Emoge, do you think foot would allow input and consider input on style of play? Because one of the
things that people have been observing is that the Canucks seem to want to get the defensemen
more involved in the attack. And we're all concerned about whether or not they're going to score
enough goals. And I'm sure the coaching staff is too. So sometimes in a lot,
order to score more goals, you have to take a few more chances. And I wonder if the players, after
being coached by Rick Tocket, not to suggest that Tocket never took input, but I think his
structure and his style of play was conservative, and he had reasons for that. But I wonder if
some of the players have suggested, like, yeah, I'd like to do this a little bit more. And, you know,
I can imagine that maybe a guy like even Elias Pedersen,
like I wouldn't mind playing a slightly different style of game
and allowing me to do my thing a little bit more.
I think that's a valid point and a great point.
I mean, any coach wants to put his players in a position to win, right?
And a lot of that is communication.
That's, you know, finding out from your perspective
what a player's strength and weaknesses are
and obviously trying to avoid those weaknesses
and allow him to play to the strengths.
And conversely from a player's standpoint, you know,
having communication with your coach and your coaching staff
and saying, hey, look, I really like when we do this,
but I don't like when we do this.
I don't think this is something that suits our strengths as players.
So I think that's something that, you know, Adam Foote and his staff,
I hope they're doing, and that is getting feedback from their players
in terms of what they like and what they don't like, right?
And what works for them and what doesn't work for them.
I mean, they can be like, I don't like backchecking.
It's hard.
Right.
That's a, that's a number.
I would say that.
No, I mean, we're not talking about basic fundamental, you know, structural type things.
We're talking kind of like the, quote, the nuances, the little things, the details that, you know, you can kind of change up.
I mean, Adam Foote's going to be true to who he is.
And, you know, in terms of what he wants to see on the ice in terms of his structure and his foundation, you're not going to overhaul everything to accommodate certain players.
what you're going to do is maybe make some tweaks,
maybe make some changes that allow those players to feel a little bit more comfortable
and utilize their strengths.
Modes, the Seahawks better not blow it against the Saints on Sunday.
They've got to start winning games at home,
and they've got to beat a team like New Orleans.
Yeah, I mean, I don't know what it is with the C.
I remember when Lumen Field used to be like a really tough place to play,
and now one win in their last seven, eight games.
I mean, it's just crazy.
By the way, shout out for the Seahawk pregame show on Sunday.
Yeah.
We're going to have Charles Davis from CBS,
who's actually calling the game for CBS as the analyst,
and also working on Matt Hasselbeck,
who, by the way, is the last Seahawk quarterback
to lead the Hawks to a victory against the Saints at Lumenfield.
So, yeah, they're Owen four since that time.
And, I mean, it's been a while,
but the Saints have won the last four games in Seattle.
So, you know, here's the thing about the Seahawks
that I think is really interesting.
I think there's, you know, the storyline going into the season with the defense.
A lot of people talked about the defensive line.
But, you know, probably the biggest story for me early in the season with that football team is the secondary
and how well they've played and how players have stepped up and look good, whether it's a Kendrick,
whether it's a Joe, you name it, love.
There's another guy there that's kind of stepped up and played well.
And, you know, it's interesting.
After the first week, there was kind of a lot of navel gazing looking at what Clint Kubiak was doing on offense.
You know, it's kind of funny.
We were just talking about, you know, putting your players in a position to win
and learning what you can and can't do.
It's week one.
And, you know, week two, the Seahawk offense started showing a little sign of life with Kenneth
Walker playing well.
And now, you know, I think it's just going to keep getting better and better as a season
progresses.
It's just as, you know, as we talked about, you know, Kubiak finds out what, you know,
Darnold in the offense, you know, what their strengths and weaknesses are and plans accordingly.
Okay, Moj, before we let you go, the jumbaya discourse from last week,
it raged on in the Dunbar Lumber text message in basket.
Juan and Comox has an ask us anything specifically about your killer jambalaya.
What is the key to the whole thing?
Is it the ingredients, the spices, or the cooking method?
Well, I think, first off, for me, it's stuff.
Stuff.
And what I define is stuff is prawns, chicken, chorizo, like your meats, your whatever you want to call, right?
Stuff.
There's nothing worse than going into a restaurant.
You pay $23 for like a, well, you know, an entree of jambalaya.
And you have like one piece of chicken, two pieces of chorizo, and a prong and a half.
And a bunch of rice.
And a bunch of rice.
Yeah.
Like, no, that's so weak.
So my advice, if you're going to make jambalaya, make sure you have a lot of stuff in it.
Yeah.
I mean, obviously having the heat levels important and having that flavor, of course.
but to me it's about having stuff.
If you're going to have jambalaya,
make sure that you have, you know,
pieces of chicken,
sufficient pieces of prawn,
sufficient pieces of chorizo and duly.
So to me,
that's a big,
big key when you're talking about jambalaya.
The title of Moge's cookbook
is going to be moge, colon,
the key is in the stuff.
I thought you were going to say it was just something,
Moge's colon.
I'm going to tell you something.
So last day,
we went to a place,
Every time we come to Calgary, two places you've got to hit.
If you ever come to Calgary, Spolumbo's Deli, where we're going a day for lunch.
The other place is called Vintage Chappos, which is a great steakhouse.
A little pricey, but it's good.
You know what I saw last night for the very first time?
How many times you go to a restaurant and you open up the menu and the lighting's pouring?
You've got to get your phone out and you got to, you know.
I did do it the other day.
They had lit menus.
What?
Yeah.
Really?
Check out my Instagram.
I'm out the real mode.
I posted it.
It's a lit menu.
So like when you open it.
but it's actually like lit.
It's awesome.
Like you didn't have to bring out your phone or whatever.
And it was pretty dark in there, obviously.
That's for old people.
That's an old people restaurant.
Whatever, man.
That's a great idea.
It is a good idea.
Vintage chopos?
Yeah.
Vintage chopos, yeah.
I'm going to check it out.
Moge, this is great.
You're going to maintain the menus, though, then, right?
Like, you can't have, like, my menu light went out.
It doesn't work.
It's those little extra touches, though, Jason, that put you above.
That's when you know the restaurant is going downhill when only half the menus light up.
This place has like two months left.
All right, Moge, thanks for doing this, buddy.
This was great. Enjoy the game.
Have a good call tonight.
We'll talk again on us, Friday.
Okay, fellas, have a great weekend.
See, buddy.
Bob, the Moj, Marjanovitch here on the Halford and Brough Show on Sports 9-650.
That actually does bring up.
I have been to restaurants before where you go in and you're like,
this place is close to being closed.
You can feel it.
The staff knows it.
There's a few key tells.
One, they're out of menu items.
That's usually a pretty good indicator, right?
the other one is there's either someone that is either not show had not shown up for their shift that ruins the entire thing or they're running late yeah so it prevents you from getting every you can see the signs and in a super hyper competitive industry restaurants close all the time looks like a radio studio yeah right pretty much uh gray and east van ask us anything what nerdy thing have you gone through a phrase a phase of collecting so this question definitely isn't
for me because I'm not really a
collector. Right.
I never, even sports memorabilia
or anything like that hasn't, hasn't,
hasn't, it's never really interested in me.
I've never been much of a collector either.
I had a bunch of sports cards as a kid.
I have a very extensive hat.
I have a very extensive hat collection right now currently.
But I don't,
it's not really nerdy.
But I also don't,
lazy because you don't want to do your hair.
I also don't collect them to like display that.
I wear them.
Yeah, yeah.
You know what I mean?
So it's more of a functionality.
I think we're all looking at Adog
right now and wondering,
if he's ever, Adog,
have you ever been into collecting stuff?
Oh, and as a kid I collected comics, I guess.
Like Archie?
No, like, I know, X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, when I was a kid.
Were you?
I mean, I was like, all my friends did,
so it wasn't anything unusual.
Everyone bought comics.
I collected hockey cards when I was a kid.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Did you take, were you like a good comic collector?
Like, were you knowledgeable?
I got better as I got older and was like,
I probably should take care of these.
I got, actually, I have some now.
are actually worth a decent amount.
Did you read them?
Yeah, of course.
I've got, okay, I've got one for the,
and this is still going on.
A good friend of mine, very good friend.
He is 47 years old,
and he actively underlined,
because he's still doing this as a matter,
recently his last month,
actively collecting those advanced Lego sets,
putting them together and then putting them on display.
Wow.
That's an adult thing now.
It's been transitioning.
That would be a bit meditative to put that together, though, right?
I think that's part of it.
I have a puzzle or whatever.
The displays are a big problem.
expensive.
They're like 300 bucks for the sheep's
He spends so much money on Lego.
Yeah.
It's insane.
Yeah.
So there you go.
There's one.
Not a kid's hobby anymore.
Mike Texan.
I've gotten into collecting booze.
Yeah.
Also not a kid's hobby.
So there's an interesting one to me because I've seen people with the elaborate.
The wine collections or the booze collection?
Both.
Well, dude, at my liquor store, like we have customers that literally come in and drop
thousands of dollars on alcohol.
Now, the thousands?
Yeah, we have scotches that are in the $8, 9,000 dollar range.
Like, they literally, they'll admit, they'll not going to drink it.
They don't drink it.
The display booze.
They collect it and to display it, but they will never drink it.
Which blows my mind.
Like, if I had that amount of money and I had a scotch that was worth that much, I would most certainly drink it.
It also becomes a talking.
I wouldn't just keep it there.
It also becomes a talking point for a lot of people.
Yeah.
Is that, well, I guess when they've got a lack of other things to discuss when they've got dinner parties or whatever.
Look at all my booze.
Or lack of personality.
Or where they could.
I mean, there is that.
Here, look at my wine collection.
There is that.
We had this cognac once that was like, I think it sold for $8,000.
And it was, I can't remember the exact name, but it was Louis the 8th something or other.
And the selling point was it actually had drops of his private reserve from whatever, six, seven.
Oh, I thought you were going to say like his blood.
Yeah.
From $6,700.
Whenever he was alive, I can't remember.
A very, very, very, very old.
And the guy that finally bought this thing said right away is like, I will never drink this because it will only go up in value.
Similar to like gold slager.
There's real gold in there.
Exactly.
It might kill you, but it's worth it.
Is that what it was called?
Remember that came out?
Goldschlager.
Is it still a thing?
Cinnamon flavored?
Oh, yeah.
Gold flakes inside.
I was in there like panning for gold.
Bringing it to the pawn shop later.
Yerke in Oshawa, I mean Ottawa.
That's a call back to yesterday.
Good job.

40 kilometers between the two stadiums,
apparently in the press release that the Whitecaps sent out
the closest proximity ever for a Canadian championship.
It will be a BC place on October 1st.
The Whitecaps should pump them, right?
That was an upset for Vancouver FC to, like, obviously to get to the final.
Yes, big upset.
But the semi was a big upset.
Yes, because they actually played a CPL match against Athletico Ottawa
in the middle of all this and lost that
quite a bad. I think it's 3-1 or 4-1.
But it's a big thing for Vancouver FC.
I give them slim to no chance of pulling it out
because the white caps in that match
where Tristan Blackman got hurt
in the semifinal against Forge
kind of wiped the floor with Forge.
And Forge is the best team in CPL.
Maybe I thought it go, but I think Forge is
by most people's standard.
And it wasn't even close in the return leg at BC Place.
So it should be a fourth consecutive Canadian championship.
just put another trophy in Thomas Muller's cabinet.
He gets finally to host the trophy that's eluded him for all these years.
They're right next to the World Cup.
He's never won a Canadian championship before.
And that's been his big failing.
It's eluded him his entire career.
He would call up Harry Kane and he'd be like, man, like, I know it's been a struggle for you.
Seeing him on the bench as an unused sub is funny to me.
Yeah.
Because he didn't play against, he was on the bench and he was wearing his pink penny.
I think he was like, there's not enough.
people in the stadium for me to play. There wasn't. There weren't many people for there.
Listed attendance was 10,000. The 10,000 was doing a lot of heavy lifting. Let me tell you that.
That figure was doing a lot of heavy lifting. Okay. One of the best parts of the week or at the very
