Whoa. Wait a minute. Huh? Hold up. What? Oh, okay. Did we just lose a fucking Canucks?
Welcome to the Halford and Broth studio of fries. Happy Halloween.
Into the St. Louis Zone with speed shoots. He scores. Jake DeBrusk wins it for Vancouver.
It's the best team game. Team one I've seen since I've been here as far as being resilient.
That's good.
Blake Snell said that your lineup didn't really get to him
and that he kind of got unlucky.
Do you have any reaction to that?
No.
This year I invested in pumpkins.
They've been going up the whole month of October.
And I got a feeling they're going to peak right around January.
And bang!
That's what I'll catch in.
Good morning, Vancouver, 601 on a Friday.

It's baseball.
I should have worn my, like the MLB hat.
Like, who are you a fan of?
Baseball?
I love baseball.
I don't have a Jayce hat.
I ordered a.
a special hat.
I thought it was going to arrive in time
for Friday's show. Alas, it
did not. So I were like, I'll go with the
white socks. I'll just, like, he's got a baseball
guy. Close enough. Look, it's a guy playing baseball.
They're playing baseball tonight

NFL with Nick looking into the weekend. We can also

We can also look ahead to a good NFL Sunday.
We get the latest iteration of Bill's Chiefs
and the Seahawks in prime time.
Why don't they just fire Mike McDaniel?
Why don't they just, why don't they?
He wants to be fired, doesn't he?
He clearly, like he deserves to be fired.
He needs to get fired.
I asked the question on social media last night.
And many of our listeners, our savvy listeners said that one,
Stephen Ross, the owner is too cheap to pay him to not coach.
And two, maybe if they leave him in,
they'll have an even worse record
than if they replace them with a coach
and they'll have a higher pick.
That's from the people.
The people have spoken, Jason.
But I agree with you.
They should get rid of them.
But maybe they won't.
We don't know.
We'll talk to Nick Shook about it at 6.30.
7 o'clock AJ from AJ's pizza is going to join the program.
A reminder, today is Friday.
That means it's Ask Us Anything.

We will preview it all with the Moge at 7.30.
8 o'clock, Rick Dollywall is going to join the program.
For today's talking points, we turn things over
to our in-house dolly sitter,
Jason Brough. There's a few topics, but I think we're going to
start with Kiefer Sherwood's contract.
You want to say it? Do you want to do the thing?
The bit, the impression? Do you want to do your dolly?
Do you want to do it?
it.
You do not think that his agent is doing cartwheels.
I want to know if Team USA is for a big of a key for sure.
You don't think Team USA is looking at him?
He's a leading goal score in the NHL for crying out loud.
Dolly's going to join us at 8 a.m. to talk all things, Canucks.
We are having another giveaway.
Now, remember, AJ's Ask us anything.
That's a contest.
We'll do it at 8 a.m.
Andy, or do you want to do it at 7.30?
The usual 8 a.m.

Oh, you're talking about golf town?
No, that's at 7.30. $250, guess why I said it?

We're giving it away.

Golf Town locations.
I will set this up throughout the show and let you know when to call.
The number here, though, is 604-280-0-650.
It's a big show we got a lot to get into.
So without further ado, Laddie,
Tell everybody what happened.
Hey, did you guys see the game last night?
No.
No.
What happened?
I missed all the action because I was...
We know how busy your life can be.
What happened?
Missed it?
You missed that?
What happened?
What happened is brought to you by the BC Construction Safety Alliance.
Making safety simpler by giving construction companies the best in tools, resources, and safety training.
This is them online at BCCSA.ca.ca.
Well, Jason Brough is wearing a Toronto.
Blue Jays hat. Laddie is wearing everything Toronto Blue Jays and that is because the Toronto Blue Jays are a win away from winning their first world series since 1993. The game goes tonight five o'clock. You can hear it right here on Sportsnet 650. Kevin Gossman gets the start as Toronto hosts L.A. in game six. Blue Jays lead the best of best of seven series three games to two. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be on the hill for L.A. after a gem in game two.
but the Js have an opportunity to win it all tonight.
And if they don't, they'll be game seven on Saturday.
I was looking at the betting lines and the Dodgers are slight favorites.
Just I imagine because of Yamamoto.
Yes.
And also they're pretty desperate.
Desperation plus Yamamoto equals betting favorite on the road, no less.
George Springer is going to be back in the last night.
And John Schneider said that he thought he actually would have been okay to go in game five.
Yeah, helmet on.
He was going to run.
Yeah.
It was going to run for Bo late in the game.
But what a decision by Schneider to hold Springer out,
put Davis Schneider in the one spot.
And then, of course, Davis Schneider rewards him with a home run
on the first pitch of the game.
Question about Yamamoto starting game six.
Yeah, brother.
They had, what, 11 days to line up the rotation for this series?
How is he not available for game seven?
Because they didn't think it was going seven.
How is Yamamoto not available for game seven?
I bet they were like, this thing isn't even going to go six?
Yams will throw me in two.
Or they thought Snell was pitching better?
They thought Snell was pitching better
What I don't know how you like
Oh game six I only get one game of this series
Yeah come on figure it out
How can I pitch again? Yeah he's going to get two games in the series
Should have got game one no no I was saying like what he was saying
When he set it up he was like this thing is going to be over in four or five
I'm only going to get they're so cocky
Yeah yeah because they're so cocky
And he could pitch in game seven
Who know I've heard so many things about game seven
Almost to the point where I'm like hey
As much as I want it to happen game six still has to be
played, and I'm not ruling out anything other than the fact that I expect Yamamoto to be good,
but you've sent along something yesterday about the options for Shohei Otani over the next two
games of this series, what they could possibly use them for, including a myriad of roles in
game seven.
Like, everything is on the table right now for both teams.
Imagine if he has to play outfield?
I could see it.
Yeah, I'm sure he can handle it.
You can do whatever he wants.
Yeah.
There's one guy where...
It would be amazing.
It would be amazing if it goes to game seven, and because of just, let's call them, substitution
and D.H and pitching and all that sort of thing.
There's a chance that he would have to play in the field.
Yes.
It would be awesome if it ended on an error.
He's like, I've never done this before.
Like, yes, I'm a good athlete, but I did not get a good beat on that ball.
He's got the card in his pocket and show.
Like, where do I throw?
Where does it go now?
I'll be honest with you.
I have not paid attention to any of the other stuff except pitching and hitting.
It is a great question.
Like, if he was to come out in the seventh inning wearing catcher's gear, I'd be like, I could see it.
I bet he could do it.
There's one guy that could do it.
I bet he'd be really good at it, having never caught a major league baseball game before.
Okay, so before we get to the Canucks, I just want to ask Laddie, how are you feeling?
Because in a way, it must have been surreal to wake up this morning and be like, well, first of all, like, oh, I got to go do that dumb show again.
But second of all, the Blue Jays can win the World Series tonight.
Got to do that dumb show, and Bruce is going to ask me about it.
I'm already pretty nervous.
Now I've got to talk about it on the radio.
I don't know.
You go through the emotions in your mind.
You never think that you're going to be in this scenario.
Your team's one win away from clinching a championship.
And you think about how you're going to react, right?
Like, win or lose.
How are you going to react when it's all over?
And it's all going to come to a head, either tonight or tomorrow night.
Oh, man.
I remember when my team had game six and then seven to win.
And anyway, I won't bore you with that.
My team is historically a little better in game sixes.
True, true, true.
You know what?
You should have a bottle of champagne, not the good stuff,
but have a bottle of champagne at the ready.
It does, makes you feel like you're that much closer to the real thing.
When have you ever done that?
We did it after we won a soccer provincial.
I've never done the film my reaction thing, but I'm very tempted to tonight.
And we did it.
I'm very tempted to put a camera.
Have you ever done it?
Well, actually, it's funny when you mentioned the party that we had when the Jay's won in 92.
One of the guys at the party filled up like an empty bottle with water.
And then to add to the mess.
Did you guys run in grade seven or something?
Yeah, they were like, no booze.
It's like I just like spraying water everywhere.
Water.
Yeah, it felt like the same thing.
It was good.
All right.
Let's get to the Canucks because they had a good result last night.
It was a gutsy performance.
They win another shootout.
their second shootout win of the year
beating the St. Louis Blues last night in St. Louis.
The Knoxper outshot 39 to 18
and it took 30 seconds for them
to suffer another key injury
when Elias Pedersen shot the puck from the point
and Brock Bessor's midsection was in the way.
Yeah, it was not good.
When Besser got hit, you could tell
the moment that he tried to get up from the ice
that this was not going to be just a
oh he's going to shake this off and come back in
he was laborer he was like do not shake me right now
please do not don't even touch me just don't
and I was like whoof that's not good
so here's the thing when you see guys get hurt in hockey
there's usual kind of signs on the ice
about the severity of the injury
and usually a guy I'll try and pick himself up
and try and skate off under his own power
just to kind of show like I'm all right
Besser couldn't do that
and then in the aftermath of the game
of which Besser missed the entirety of
I'm not even going to bother playing the audio
because it's a short clip
but Adam Foote was asked for a
Brock Besser update in the aftermath
and he slightly chuckled and said
I can't even tell you what happened to Brock
but I think he'll be back next game
Do you think that conducts medical staff
is probably like oh my God here we go again
just going on the ice like all right
probably I mean that was the ninth injury
that the team had suffered up to that point
and even Atu Ratu when he exited ever so
briefly during the game. I'm like, we're at double digits now
with injuries. Thankfully he came back
and he was all right, but at least Kiefer
Sherwood isn't hurt yet.
One of an incredible story
this guy is
three goals last night,
the hat trick, and I know
this game went to overtime, but it is still
remarkable.
2412
of Ice Time for Kiefer
Sherwood, who you'll recall
was signed in Vancouver
as a fourth line player.
fourth line energy guy.
Now he is tied for the lead in the NHL in goals scored, is it still?
Yep.
Nine goals and tied for last and assists.
The NHL leaders in goals right now include Nathan McKinnon, Mark Shifley, Jack Hughes, and Kiefer Shirlwood.
Just to give you an idea of how unbelievable the season has been to start for Sherwood.
And he has been, honestly, I mean, him and Garland, and the fact that Garland is out, you would have said, like, this team is so heavily reliant on these guys that, and Garland has sort of turned himself into a bona fide, legitimate play driver and a very good NHL forward.
But still, to think that this entire season is hinged on the offensive exploits of Connor Garland, who's now hurt and now Kiefer Sherwood, they find a way.
And you know what, we play this clip in the intro, and I want to play it in its entirety.
This is Adam Foote, the head coach, talking about the guts and the grit and what a team win this was.
Because let's be honest, on paper with what the Canucks iced yesterday, they had no business going into anybody's rink and winning an NHL game.
They got roundly outshot, to a certain degree they got outplayed, but they fought and they scraped and they clawed and they got two points.
And that's very important.
And here is Adam Foote expressing admiration for what his team did yesterday in a 4-3 shootout win in St. Louis.
He lose best in the first shift, a good player like that.
You're like, no, here we go again.
And you just sit at the battle.
I just told him, it's pretty incredible for me as a coach
and here two and a half years, maybe almost three years.
And it's the best team game, a team win I've seen since I've been here
as far as being resilient.
What our leadership group has done to allow the young guys to come in
and feel comfortable, play with confidence,
not get upset at them when they make those young mistakes.
is impressive because these young guys are giving us good minutes right now and these guys up from
the minors and you know even lengths his game tonight um how he played um it was pretty good so
the team part of it um yeah there were some mistakes but that's okay they're making mistakes too
and that's a good hockey team that's very desperate right now they lost five and um you know they
think they've got a couple guys out as well but i mean what's going on with our group to be that
resilient is the key to build on.
So it was a very good result.
And the Canucks have been
resilient this year. It's very
tough to judge this group
right now in terms of
like are they a good team? It's like I don't know
like. They're resilient.
They're resilient but you know
like the underlying numbers aren't very good.
They've been very reliant on Thatcher Demko
when he's been in there. Kevin Lanken
and got the job done yesterday. He's very good
in shootouts. Yep. And he
did stop a lot of pucks. He did.
yesterday. He let in a couple of questionable goals, but
he got the job done. So it's hard, you know, the underlying numbers for the
Canucks are not promising, but like with the
lineup they've got, you're kind of expecting them to go into a lot of these
games and get out shot and hopefully just find a way to get a point or two
out of the game. Kiefer Sherwood's shooting percentage is 37 and a half.
That's sustainable. That's probably not going to last, but
you know regardless of that like even if he didn't have you know even even if he had like four or five goals
I think this would be a fascinating contract situation because on the one hand you've got the fact that
he is showing up and he is like a heart and soul player he's getting goals like he led the
NHL set records last year in hits like he's clearly a guy that the fans like the teammates like
he's an important player for them.
Yep.
On the other hand, he's the 30-year-old guy
who has 52 career NHL goals.
And, you know, I've heard people knocking around contracts like,
oh, this guy's going to get like a five-year deal,
$25 million deal.
I know.
For a 30-year-old with 52 career goals who up until, you know,
I guess last season was considered a fourth line guy
and maybe not even like this is the connects are his fourth NHL team that year that he had with
Nashville was sort of like his first real legitimate bonafide full NHL season yeah that wasn't that
long ago no it wasn't that and look we have time for late bloomers one of the sure one of the most
popular Canucks of all time was a famous late bloomer in Alex Burroughs um but it is I just think
you know we got someone new to who texted in this morning I don't have it right in front of me
but they were like, did I hear that the Canucks are like actually hesitant to re-sign Kiefer Sherwood?
And this is why this organization is failing.
I was like, yeah, well, they've also like kind of like bought high on some guys.
And that's another reason why they've had some trouble.
Which guys?
Louis Erickson was bought high on.
Oh, yeah.
I'd argue that maybe Drew O'Connor was bought high on.
Although he's doing his thing.
I don't know what it is, but he's doing it on a semi-regular races.
I mean, there's another guy.
They bought quick on him more than high, but it was fast.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, there's a guy with the biggest contract on the team that's had some up and downs.
Yep.
But, you know, defensively, he was very good, at Leas Pedersen.
He was very good yesterday, but offensively he didn't provide much.
And Jake DeBrusk, until he scored the shootout winner, was an absolute ghost out there.
Not great.
I mean, you just added all up, and it's incredible that the Canucks won last night.
How do they win?
Well, they got a hat trick from Kiefer-Shirwood.
What?
Like, how did that happen?
They also got absolutely screwed by the referees last night, if you want to go down
out road.
What do you talk about?
That was goalie interference.
That was not goalie interference.
What do you talk?
It was ruled a good goal on the ice.
Yeah, that's why they have review.
They talked about four minutes to look at it.
They came up with absolutely nothing conclusive.
If it's conclusive, it should be 30 seconds or less that that's interference.
The biggest issue that the NHL has with goal of interference rate is that
Nobody has any idea what goal of the interference is.
So when you go to the review, you're looking for anything.
And that's the worst possible thing because then you're going through Zuprooter film style saying like, well, is that it?
Is that it? Is that it?
You're challenging the entirety of the play.
I didn't see it.
You're just mad.
You're just mad because you made.
It was out of the blue paint.
You made Evander Kane the one to watch yesterday.
And you were hoping that you were going to have some good audio to play this morning and be like, see, I made him the one.
So self-serving.
It's all about you.
No, no, no, no, no.
It's all about limitless A.V.
Anyway, I'm glad that they were able to overcome.
Limitless Avey, like, wow, look at the power of this.
This is incredible.
It was Trey Savage and Evander Cain.
Could you imagine?
Could you imagine the power that this Limitless A.V. company has?
Hey, you know what?
Evander Cain made a nice play on Kiefer-Shirwood's first goal.
I think he was pretty good last night.
That was his best game as a conch, actually.
Yeah, he got in on the forecheck on the second unit power play,
which was way better than the first unit power play,
forced to turnover,
and then Kiefer Shirt was just there to bang it in.
You know what's going to be interesting
is the Canadian Olympic goaltending decision.
Because I don't, like, maybe you choose Bennington as one of the goalies
just because of what he did at the Four Nations,
but he looks awful.
He looks awful.
That first goal, I know, great work by a event.
Van der Kaine on the forecheck.
Nice played by Kiefer Sherwood to get to the front of the net and put that in.
But, like, Bennington just like, doesn't know what he's doing right now.
The crazy part is that was actually one of the best goaltending performances that the
blues have had in the last couple weeks because they've been giving up five goals with
regularity.
So to trim it to three against the powerhouse Canucks offense led by Kiefer Shrewood,
that was a good one.
And it wasn't that good.
I mean, the blues are a mess, by the way.
We mentioned it was,
Foot mentioned they came into the game
losing 5th Street.
That's six in a row now for them
and neither goalie can stop a puck
with regularity.
So it's not good times
and yeah,
the Canadian goaltending thing
is pretty interesting
because I don't know what you do.
I'm assuming that Bennington gets
the benefit of the doubt
because he's done it on that stage before.
Dustin Wolf.
Dustin Wolf is Ameriard.
It's going to be incredibly hard
to get his passport
take care of.
That's the tough part.
Yeah.
Maybe they could like convince him
to like,
Maybe.
That was hilarious.
Adog was so confident.
He's like,
Dustin and Wolf,
I got a guy.
Lock it in.
Solution.
I just like the...
Surely we must have one.
The goal saved above expected numbers.
And guess who's back up there?
Logan Thompson and our good friend,
Darcy Kemper.
Camps is having a good year for them.
Like, they're always in the debate,
but they never seem to break through.
They had a crazy comeback, by the way, last night.
The King's had a crazy comeback last night, by the way, too.
They're comfortable in there, though.
And it's for the gold medal.
Logan Thompson.
So you know, it has to be Bennington, like just because of his...
It does not have to be Bennington.
Well, who else would there be?
I don't know.
Aiden Hill, Sam Montaubon.
No, that's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying.
Logan Thompson than the way the Bennington looks right now.
Their logic behind it will be like, well, he won us the big game, so he's going in.
This team Canada management group has said, and I assume this applies to the goalies, too.
It matters in form.
Like, if you're in form, then you will be in the lineup.
And that's why, you know, it's so important that Celebrini and Badardo are off to good starts
because they're going to take the informed players.
There will be some guys, like, you know, if Connor McDavid is having a bit of a tough week,
I don't think they're going to leave them off the lineup.
There is a balance to these things, but it does matter.
I mean, goaltending, especially you want to get the informed goalies.
You don't want to put in a guy that's like, I'm not feeling good about my game.
And now the hopes of the country are on my shoulders.
the texts into the Dunbar Lumber text message in
Baskett. Guys, did you see
Jim Montgomery's reaction when
Braden Shinn stick handled the puck into the
corner on the shootout? I did.
I did. So
NHO coaches know that any
moment they can be on camera. So usually
they try not to react and
Montgomery's was understated but he was still like
what the hell was that? What just happened?
I kind of felt bad for Shen because
it's so embarrassing. And of course
all the jackals on social media picked up
on it right away. That one actually came
after PD shootout attempt, which wasn't
exactly the most on. What the hell is that?
Kind of. Both of them back to back. That was Montgomery.
What's going on? Petey shootout attempt was
a bit of, I'm at the free throw line
and don't want to have an air ball.
Just is it hits the rim, it's not an airball kind of shot.
You know, like, I don't.
I didn't, I was, I'm watching this.
I'm like, okay. And then thankfully
Shen went up there and made it
10 times worse. It was like, wow, that's way worse.
That could be the new Connected slogan.
I'm watching it, and then I'm like, okay.
Okay, well, yeah, you tried, I guess, and then we move on to Shenz attempt.
Anyway, imagine that it is, like, sigh, okay.
All right.
Sure, sure.

Nick Shook joins us here now on the Halford and Brush Show on Sportsnet 650.
Morning, Nick.
How are you?
Fantastic, guys.
Thanks for having me.
Thanks for coming on, man.
We appreciate you taking the time.
So in the waning seconds of that 28 to 6 win, Baltimore over Miami yesterday,
I threw out to my legion of followers on Twitter.
I said, do you think Mike McDaniel will still be the head coach of the Dolphins by the time we get to air tomorrow morning?
And some said, no, maybe not.
And there was a couple of funny gifts in there.
And then a bunch of people said, yeah, he still is going to be the head coach.
And two of the big reasons why were one, the owner's too cheap to fire him.
And two, the longer he stays on the job, the worst record they'll have and the higher pick they'll get in next year's draft.
So is that the thinking here, Nick?
because I did wake up this morning
and Mike McDaniel
still the head coach
the Miami Dolphins
Yeah, you know
I don't know if the money is
all that much of
to do with it but I'm curious that
I mean look
I thought he was going to get fired
to the loss of the Browns right
like that felt pretty likely
given how poor they looked
then they go out and blast the Falcons
in Atlanta and then they come back and turn
into a turn of performance in like this
where I mean
They were the better team in the first half.
Some might say, I don't know if I would 100% agree with that,
but they had chances to win this game
and they simply couldn't get out of their own way at the end of the day.
So I don't know if that's enough to entice ownership
to keep Mike McDaniel.
I know that there was just the whole vibe of he likes him
and he believes in him,
but the thing, the operation looks really bad right now
and it feels inevitable.
It's just a matter of how deep into the season do we go.
You know, we haven't seen a,
drastic move really get made in the NFL this season.
I mean, I don't know if I would necessarily consider that to be drastic, but we've only
seen one coach get fired, and we knew that Brian Cattahan was probably on his way out,
just based on how bad the Titans are as well.
So I feel like maybe the Dolphins believe they might have some time.
And there's also, we're in that period of the year where we don't really have a red-hot
coaching candidate that has emerged from a staff somewhere.
So it's been an unpredictable season, and I can totally see this.
being the dolphins come out next
game and are great again, are excellent
again, you know, for two or three
quarters, and then they revert back to who they are.
This Matt is his own going to continue.
Can the Ravens still salvage their season?
Yeah, they absolutely can.
If you look at their upcoming schedule,
you know, we talked about this in the post game
on NFL Daily last night, and I was kind of blown away.
I felt like it was the first time I looked at the Raven schedule.
Their next four games are against the Vikings,
Browns, Jets, and Bengals, and I could see them going four and out.
If they play their B-B-plus game, which is what they played last night against those
four teams, they'll probably beat all four of those teams.
Then they play Pittsburgh in Week 14, which is December 7th.
I mean, if you win four straight here, you're seven and five.
Who's to tell them, you know, who's to say whether the Steelers can stay afloat?
Yes, they lost, you know, a game against the Packers team that's very good.
But they play Indianapolis, the Chargers, the Bengals, the Bears.
bears and the bills in their next five and they're four and three right now this division is very
very much up for grabs we're speaking to nick shook from nflb.com here on the halford and bruff
show on sports net 650 let's preview some of these games on the weekend nick the big one for
everybody i think is the latest iteration of bills chiefs what are you looking forward to in this one
you know i i i felt pretty down on the bills over the last month and it's not to sound like a
hater or anything. But the records are five and two and five and three. Chiefs have one more
lost, right, because they have another bi-week. Yet, that Bill's game that we saw most recently,
which is that blowout went over the Panthers, I don't know if that's necessarily indicative of
who this team is. And I don't think it gives us the best. It helps them, you know, improve their
whole, all right, we got some good mojo going into this yet another regular season meeting with
the Chiefs. But I think that even in the way that they respond to some of these questions,
they realize they have things that they still need to fix.
I believe that this is either a team that's going to peak later, not peak at all.
And I don't think they're going to peak this weekend.
However, it will be a good measuring stick for them against the team that is playing the best football in the NFL right now, the Kansas City Chiefs.
I know people are tired of hearing that, but I'm just telling you what I see and what many of us have seen.
So I don't think that it's like, this isn't their season.
You know, there was so much hype built around the Bills' Chiefs games in the past.
And, you know, it was somehow always ended up in either the one of the fours,
25 p.m.
slot Eastern on CBS.
I don't know why we never really got many prime time
showdowns of these outside the playoffs.
But I don't think that this game makes or breaks
either season.
And I also don't believe I'm going to...
Yeah, I'm going to learn a little bit about the bills here.
I'm going to learn a little bit about the bills
from this game because a 40 to 9 win over the Panthers
in which you just had to run the ball really well,
which, by the way, they should try that again this week
since that's what they went away from
and their two losses this season.
They didn't tell me that suddenly the bills are fixed
because I don't think they are, but this would be a good way
to kind of figure out where they are at this point
in the season. I'm glad you brought that up. That was my next
question actually. More of a statement of
fact. The bills seem like a
way more competent offense when
they let James
Cook cook. I know this is a thing
that's been going around but there's proof in the pudding
every time and I know that there's been
some consternation about you don't want
to run them too much too early and you want to try and save them
for late in the season. And I know everyone's
enamored with what Josh Allen can do but it just
seems like when they're a little bit more run
dominant. It opens up so much more for them. And they're very effective when they do it.
So my question is, why don't they do it more? Yeah, I totally agree. It's been a point of
frustration for me with the bills going back to when Brian Dayhole, well, actually when
Ken Dorsey was their offensive coordinator, which ultimately led to him getting fired. And I thought
Joe Brady had fixed that. You know, when Joe Brady replaced Ken Dorsey mid-season, that's the
first thing he did was turn back to the running game. And you make a good point about everybody
just being, you know, kind of falling in love with Josh Allen being a superhero and making all these
crazy plays. But that cannot be your, like, you can't depend on that. That can't be the linchpin of
your offense is just Josh go out there and make a play. And I feel too often that has been the case
with this team this year. I don't care about the durability thing with James Cook. He's young.
You just gave him an extension that he wanted that he held out for. You also have Ray Davis back
there. You got Ty Johnson. You have other capable runners to spell him. And you just haven't seen it
very often from week to week.
It's, it's, you know, mystifying at times.
And it was very encouraging to see them go right back to it against the Panthers defense that
statistically was very good against the run.
And they shredded that.
So James Cook is one of the best running backs in the NFL.
He's up there, you know, with the likes of Jonathan Taylor and, you know, just like the premier guys
at the top, James Cook is right up in there.
And I think that it would behoove them to lean on him heavily over the next month or
so while they still try to work out the kinks of their passing offense.
Because you're right.
When the running game gets going, everything else works for them.
And oh, by the way, their receiving core is pretty unremarkable.
Keon Coleman is a nice, you know, guy that can make a play, you know, on a 50-50 ball.
He's a taller receiver and everything else.
But largely speaking, the receiving core is unremarkable.
And they still haven't used their tight ends as much as I would like them too.
So open it up with the running game and everything else, I think will work for them.
Hey, Nick, we're about halfway through the season now.
in terms of the favorites to win the Super Bowl,
is it as wide open as it seems right now?
Like, I'm a Seahawks fan, and I'm kind of like,
well, the Seahawks are good,
but surely they're not like Super Bowl contenders.
But then I'm like, well, who is unbeatable right now?
Like, who do you look at and you're like,
well, you know, the Seahawks might be an okay team,
but they're never beating this team.
It just seems like things are very,
wide open right now. Yeah, they are. And it's actually led to one of my worst picking seasons
in my career because I can't tell you what's up or down in the NFL from week to week right now.
But it's good. It's a good product because it keeps everybody interested. And I agree,
the Patriots are six and two right now. The Colts are seven and one. I think the Colts are
legit. And I think the Patriots are actually turning toward being legit. But these are outcomes that
we didn't expect. Who are the Jacksonville Jaguars at this point? And you want to go over
the NFC. The NFC is the deeper conference of the two. I have very strong beliefs in the Seattle
Seahawks. I hope you guys, you know, are happy to hear that because I feel as though they've
been on the right trajectory for a while now. And the reason that I'm confident in them is, you know,
I love Sam Darnold, obviously. Their offensive line is playing better than I thought it would,
given that they didn't make quite as many changes up front as I would have liked them to.
But it's the defense, man. Like Mike McDonald's defenses,
coming together, playing really well, playing well when they're missing multiple starters, too.
And I think that is going to travel for them, and they're in a very winnable division.
The Rams are going to be a tough out as well.
You could come down to those two teams.
San Francisco is always going to be annoyingly there, even as they've been ravaged by injuries.
But, yeah, this has definitely been one of the most unpredictable seasons in the NFL.
I do, I think we did this on NFL daily like a week or so ago.
There's a select few teams that I actually feel very confident in right now in the NFC.
and it's Green Bay, it's Detroit, it's Tampa, it's Seattle, it's the Rams,
and then you can fill up those last few spots.
The Eagles have enough talent, but the drama just seems to, you know,
percolate with them and kind of just circle around them all season.
But the Seahawks are among the teams I am most confident in right now
and what has been an otherwise very unpredictable season.
Well, the Seahawks are on primetime this week, Sunday night football in Washington
against the commanders.
Tell us how the season's gone for the commanders
and who's going to be a quarterback for them this week.
Well, it's all but over at this point for the commanders
because they just can't get out of their way with injuries.
It's not their fault.
I mean, to a degree it is because I think they've built their defense.
It's an older defense.
It's a veteran-laden defense.
It's Marshawn Latimore at one corner,
and it's Bobby Wagner, who's still playing well at middle linebacker.
But the guys that they lost from year to year,
You know, the Dante Fowler types, they have not effectively replaced.
And they've also been absolutely decimated by injury on both sides of all.
Jaden Daniels has been dealing with another injury.
Austin Echler suffered a season ending in Achilles tear, you know, more than a month ago.
It was very, it was week two in the season.
They've lost multiple offensive linemen.
Larry Tonzel left their last game with a hamstring injury.
Daniels was dealing with a hamstring injury.
Defensively, they lost Dorrance Armstrong for the year.
they are a team that is just, you know, I don't think that they have necessarily the depth to overcome that.
So what I see from them is an offense that's still capable of putting points on the board.
They will make some mistakes, especially when Daniels isn't out there.
Marcus Marriota is their backup and is a very capable, he's what I consider to be a plus backup in the NFL.
And he'll keep that offense moving and keep them in games.
I don't think their defense can hold up against most teams anymore.
And they had a couple of interceptions.
The proof was in that Monday Night game against the Chiefs.
They had two picks, the chief's first two drives.
Very rare that that happens, especially in Kansas City against Patrick Mahomes.
They got nothing out of it.
So it kind of tells you what their limited ceiling is right now.
And I think this is, if you're going to pick 18 to play to fly across the country to play on prime time.
If you're the Seahawks, this is, other than the dolphins, this is probably the team I would want to play.
Nick, this was great, buddy.
Thanks for taking the time to do it.
As always, we appreciate it.
Enjoy all the games this weekend.
It should be a lot of fun.
We'll do this again next Friday.
All right, guys. Thanks for having me.
Thanks for coming on, bud.
We appreciate it. That's Nick Shook from NFL.com here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.

Okay, we talked about the Canucks in the first segment, and if you missed that,
you can download the podcast.
It was a busy night in the NHL last night.
Let's talk about the Edmonton Oilers because they lost to the
New York Rangers, and J.T. Miller scored the winner
and overtime for the Rangers. But the
story
in Edmonton right now
is not Connor McDavid. It's not
Leon Drysidl. It's not even the goaltending. It's
Evan Bouchard, the defenseman.
Has Mark Spector, SportsNeds very own, put it on Twitter
last night, an epic night
for Evan Bouchard, who went minus
three in the loss to the Rangers
with the quote-unquote primary giveaway.
I don't know if that's a stat or not,
but it should be on two of the four Rangers' goals.
Speck then went on to point out
that Evan Bouchard now becomes a team worst minus nine on the season.
Primary giveaway?
Is that implied that there was a tertiary giveaway in that sequence somewhere?
A giveaway that led to the giveaway.
That would be great, actually.
The tranches of giveaways.
Darnel Nurse was skating to the score.
He's like, I got the second giveaway.
Boosh, watch this.
They're not in a good way.
I believe that's three losses in their last four
for the Evantern Oilers right now.
Do you want to hear Vancouver's former favorite son, J.T. Miller,
scoring the O'Too, they were fired up on the Rangers bench.
I saw Sully giving it a couple fist bumps
when this one went in.
J.T. Miller, 249 into overtime as the Rangers
beat Evan Bouchard in the Oilers last night, 4-3 in overtime.
Here's what it sounded like.
Here's Schneider.
Miller, 215 remaining at overtime.
Ice move by J.T. Miller.
Down the right side.
Loose and shoots and scores!
It's an overtime winner.
J.T. Miller beating Stewart Skinner.
Rangers off the bench.
They win the game, 4 to 3.
Can I give a mental picture of that goal?
Do it, Lattie.
He comes in the right wing, and he just kind of skates to the goal,
and he just kind of slides the puck into the net.
Nobody really comes near him.
It's a weird one.
folks.
Great move.
It all due respect to
Kenny Albert, who's one of the best
of the biz.
He's like, great move, Miller.
I was like, where was it?
He just took it to the net.
Was it Skinner and goal?
Yeah.
So the D-Man was like,
Skinner, you got better.
Stu had 30.
You got your man.
Stu had 30 saves last thing.
Like, he held up his end of the bargain.
They're just not good defensive.
If you look in the underlying numbers,
the Rangers actually have a very good scoring chance
differential at five on five.
And early in the season,
they just couldn't buy a goal.
And that's what the Rangers were like trying.
to tell themselves after these games.
They were frustrated, but Miller was kind of at the front there.
I mean, he's the captain there, so he's the player spokesman for them,
and he kept on saying, like, listen, like, we're not playing that badly.
They did play badly in the run-up to the Canucks game.
They had a bad game defensively against San Jose.
They did not play well in Calgary, but then they came into Vancouver,
and they shut down the Canucks.
United Canucks did not have much
against the New York Rangers
they win that one two nothing
and they deserve to win that game
and then last night they go into Edmonton
they get the win and they have a chance
I think on Saturday there in Seattle
to finish the road trip three and one
so you know the Rangers they're 500
and even though they've had like
kind of a hilarious start to the season
getting shut out all those times at home
they're not
they're 5-1-1 on the road
like they've been good
They should never play a man to square guard again.
If you look at the underlying numbers, again, I know these aren't, it's not everything
and early in the season, sometimes you can get fooled by these,
but they're not really playing terrible hockey right now.
Let's keep it in the Eastern Conference.
Does anyone know who the first place team in the NHL is going to be
once tonight's action is over and we turn the page from October to November?
So who will finish the top the NHL standings at the end of October, Greg?
I'm looking right at you.
I haven't paid a lick of attention to the start of this NHL season.
The answer, I'll admit it, is the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Last night, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Minnesota Wilde 4-1.
And by the way, did you know that the Minnesota Wild now play at the Grand Casino Arena?
That's awesome.
Did not know that.
Is that why they stink?
Yeah, what happened to the XL Energy Center?
Wow, that was that from day one.
I know.
It's now the Grand Casino.
The Grand Casino.
Ran out of energy.
That doesn't sound great, does it?
It's like Ario Speedwagon playing the pre-game.
game show or something.
It's true.
You get $15 and chips.
What was it called?
The Grand Casino Arena.
Anyway, the Penguins won 4-1 in Minnesota yesterday.
That is now an eight-game point streak for the Pittsburgh Penguins who are 6-0-2 in their last A-games.
As a result, the Penguins are the first-place team in the entire National Hockey League.
They finish the month of October at 8-2-2-2.
it is the most improbable story
in the National Hockey League right now
it's the usual guys are still there
doing the business right Crosby's playing very well
Malkin's playing very well
Well Malkin's a huge surprise the way he's
producing this year
Yeah his production is off the chart
So too is Eric Carlson's
But they're also getting contributions from guys like
Ryan Shea Anthony Manta's been really good for them
Tristan Jari
And Tristan Jari I was just going to get to that
Tristan Jari
Remember when he got sent down to the American League last year
and it's like,
this could be the end of Tristan Jari.
He has been unbelievably good.
He's 13, 5, and 2
since that sort of very...
I've been a firm believer.
Very public demotion there.
He also did a really great job
when the Wild were on the power.
The one thing the Wilde had been good on this year
is the power play.
They led the NHL in power play goals,
but they couldn't score on any of them
against Jari and the Penguins yesterday.
So shout out to Jari.
And hey, I'll say it.
RDC Loves has been a really good
part of that tandem as well.
He's played a lot.
That's an improbable story,
but good on the penguins
for doing it. You know what's looking like one of the better
off-season moves right now?
What's that? Trevor Zegers to Philly.
Oh, man. He's got 12 points
in 10 games, and he's already
become a fan favorite in Philly
because not only is he producing and he's
a very creative player, like he's
pretty, he's got some
spunk to him. I'm laughing
on the subject of
arena names. So
the Philadelphia Flyers play at
Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Okay. Yeah, yeah. So
yesterday, I wish I clipped this, but I didn't.
They did the walk-off interview with Zegris
because he had a bunch of points
and a 401 win over in Asheville.
And they were talking about being a fan favorite in Phil
and he's like, yeah, it's just an honor to play in the Xfinity.
No one is ever, I'm not making this up.
He said it like with a straight face.
I'm like, no one has ever called it that before
except you, Trevor Zegaris, at the Xfinity.
But he is on fire.
He has seven points over his last three games.
11 all told.
And yeah, him and Mitch Gough had a good game last night, too.
And they're winning games.
I thought Taco was going to ruin those guys.
Wasn't that his intent?
To ruin the young players.
He's like, I'm going to go into Philly and I'm going to ruin the young players.
He's not exactly the opposite.
They're playing good hockey.
They've won three straight.
And it's funny.
I remember we played the, we did play the audio of when Zegris was referring to Rick
Tocet, his name for him was Toco.
And I was like, I bet he loves that.
I bet Rick Tocut, Taco loves that.
And I'm sure your relationship was going to thrive.
It has. They've been great together, those two. So good on, you know, I'm a generational
hater, but I will acknowledge when someone is doing well, good on Rick Tock and the Philadelphia
Flyers who are off to a very good start this season. Still very early there. Still early.
And Samuel Harrison's hurt now. Did you see that? Yeah, and Vladars got like a 940,
so that's probably not going to stick around there. I think Kurtz got hurt. Couturier got hurt.
So Sean Couturee did get hurt yesterday. So we'll have to, like everyone gets, everyone's hurt.
There's a lot of injuries right now in the National Hockey League.
Jason Dickinson got hurt.
Good.
Usually it's goalies early on.
Yeah, that was a good one.
Back to generational hating, Dickinson got hurt, so that's good.
Sorry, what were you saying?
It's goalies early in the season that are going down, but it's everyone this year.
Yeah, and again, we talked about this yesterday.
Compressed schedule our want and need and desire for international best-on-best at the Olympics.
This is one of the byproducts.
You're playing a lot of games in a short period of time and guys get hurt, so that happens.
Okay, we got to go.
We just end up shooting pucks in the midsection because of the,
condensed schedule. That's true.
Thankfully, he'll only miss him. I was like,
I would have missed Brock's groin
if not for the condensed schedule.
I didn't want to bring it out, but DPD, like,
it was like a heat-seeking missile, like
right to the groin. Like, he...
30 seconds into the game. He had the puck so hard.
And it was right, like... I don't even
apologize for that. Like, what do you...
Yeah, I know. You have to be so sheepish
in the aftermath, because you know what you've done, right?
I know we were trying to get off to a good start
tonight, and I have put
the puck right into your midsection.
Oh, my besticles.
Come on, man.
All right.
How old are you?
It was in the inbox.
He was just reading a text.
