What up AJ?
What is going on?
Well just to tell you answer,
I said hello and I haven't seen him.
It's not nice. I know, and now you have not one but two restaurants, just to tell Dr. Answer, I said hello and I haven't seen him. It's not nice.
I know.
And now you have not one, but two restaurants for him to go to.
He's been out of town for a bit, I think.
How are you guys?
We're good. How are you? Hit us with your ask us.
You've got to ask us anything for us.
I think, yeah, they kind of dovetail off of each other.
And it goes, you know, so from your naked eye, since you were a kid watching hockey,
who do you think, who would be your best team
you've ever watched play?
Okay, so I'm glad you asked this because we were just,
I was just talking about the Colorado Detroit rivalries
of the 90s and 2000s.
And when we talk about how much talent you need
to win a Stanley Cup, you go back and you look at those teams.
I went back and looked at the one,
the Detroit team, the one in 2001, 02,
they had Brendan Shanahan, Sergey Fedorov,
Brett Hull, Nick Lindstrom,
Luke Robitaille, Steve Iserman, Igor Larianov,
Chris Cellios and Pavel Datuk.
That's nine Hall of Famers.
They played on one.
The rest of the league was like, we need a hard cap.
Bad.
We need it bad.
No, that team was great.
And I remember watching it.
They were, they were, yeah, I loved watching them.
They were awesome.
Mine's the 80s Oilers.
Yes.
Yeah.
I mean, I go to that.
I go to the Islanders, you know, and the reason why I bring it up is because now they're far
away, away from it, but man, the Panthers are good.
Panthers are unbelievable.
They're just relentless, right?
Like, like you just, you know, like last year, buddy, mine was a huge Ranger fan
was like, there's like seven of them out there.
Yeah.
He's like, you know, and they're big, they're physical.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, they've got a chance to get to three straight Stanley Cups
Who's the last team that did that?
It's been a while. Yeah, it's been a long time right cuz Chicago went two out of three, right?
Like they went yeah three in a row is was it the Islanders?
It might have been the was it did Pittsburgh do it like three straight Stanley Cup finals
It might have been the Islanders because I don't think the Oilers did it because they lost in 86. It's wild
Okay, my last one quickly.
Is Paul Maurice not getting enough credit?
Therese and I were talking about that.
Okay, this is a good one too,
because Maurice is a fantastic coach,
and he's been doing it for forever.
But a lot of the credit that goes to Florida
goes to the way that the team is built,
the amount of talent that they have.
It was interesting, Freage had a note on 32 Thoughts.
He was talking to Nate Schmidt.
It was the lightning. They got, but they got, but we
always forget because of the bubble series and all
that sort of thing.
Right.
Yeah.
Freage had a thing where he was talking to Nate
Schmidt and Nate Schmidt said when he first got to
Florida, he made a horrific play in the offensive
zone. And instead of Maurice correcting him, he
said it, he wouldn't say which one it was, but it
was one of Bennett, Barkoff or Kachuk skated up to him.
And all they said was, we don't do that here. Meaning like that.
And so there is something to be said, like Maurice is a great coach and everything.
And part of coaching is letting your players sort of dictate how things go.
Right. Of course. Yeah. But culture. Right. Right. Exactly.
He and he, you know, he did a great job in Winnipeg, too.
And I think I think hindsight being 20, 20, he knew when his time was up
and when it was time to leave.
Also the sign of a good coach.
But it is a good question for sure.
OK, we're wildly up against it for time here.
Yeah, we are real quick this weekend.
Let us know what's going on at AJ's so everyone can come by again.
Now one to two restaurants now. Right.
Well, you got happy out world day Sunday. You can watch the Knicks choke again tonight and then we got hockey

And showy.
Oh yeah.
Detroit Ronnie.
Well now that we're doing the song,
do we have to answer on the line?
I'm always impressed by how many listeners
text in with like the answer right away. Yeah because it's they like making us feel stupid.
Well that's so easy though. It's true. Langing fruit. We were just, what you don't
understand is sometimes when you're talking about something in the moment
and you have a, because we actually do some prep on this show believe it or not
contrary to what you hear there is some prep work involved. Well I'm stuck in the
80s so everything's like I think it probably happened in the 80s.
Right, and he's right.
It did happen.
The Islanders before the Lightning were the team.
But the bubble years and the one where they were
the Canadian division against the rest of the NHL.
Such a weird time.
I forget who went to the Stanley Cup finals,
but kudos to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It's all about-
Who apparently went three straight times.
And now the other Florida team's gonna do it too,
so that's great. Do we have Drancer on the line? Okay, let's go to the phone Bay Lightning. It's all about. When three straight times. And now the other Florida team is going to do it, too. Sounds great. Do we have Drancer on the line?
OK, let's go to the phone lines now.
Our next guest, you know him, of course, from Canucks talk right here on Sportsnet
650 and his work at the athletic Thomas Drance here on the Halford and Bref Show
on Sportsnet 650. What up, Drancer?
Good morning, gentlemen.
Thanks for having me.
Well, thanks for coming on.
How's your vacation going?
No, I'm back. I'm back.
It took me a long time to get back at a circuitous travel day, uh,
back from Jamaica and uh, yeah, back. I'll be, I'll be in studio today. So I'm,
I'm really back.
How was Jamaica? I'm having trouble picturing you in Jamaica.
I like the thing that you came back with a singular dreadlock, you know,
his attire will be very bright today in the studio.
Yeah, I call it my tail.
Um, I, uh, Jamaica was great.
It was, so I was there for my brother-in-law's wedding.
Um, beautiful, like a beautiful week, just a resort life and, um, enjoyed it.
Yeah, really had a good time.
Dranser, let's talk a little bit about the Panthers.
What makes them so good?
Oh man.
I mean, so there's a lot going on, but like
fundamentally they have, because a lot of talk now that Carolina's lost about 13 in a row in the
conference final is going to be about Rod Brindemore's tactical stubbornness. The stress
hockey doesn't work and the truth is that there's not a lot of differences
really in how Carolina and Florida play. I mean both of those teams are
stress hockey teams, like flat out, And yet when Florida does it, it feels different in part because when they
turn up, like when Carolina turns up and throws their absolute fastball and they
hit their top gear when they're absolutely crushing it, it's like, wow,
they registered 30 shots and they're up one nothing, you know?
Whereas when Florida does it, you're buried. You're buried.
It's four goals across 25 minutes
and they've out-chanced you nine to two.
And the reason for that fundamentally
is they have more good players.
Like they have more good players.
And I mean, up and down that lineup,
it feels a little bit like some of those Tampa teams
or some of that, like remember when Chicago
had that third line and it was like, Andrew Ladd, Dustin Buffland, Dave Boland.
And then all three of those guys were on like a 70 point pace for
other teams the next year.
Yeah.
Right.
And it was just like, Oh, right.
Those guys are all first liners.
Oh, wow.
Like that's, that's what Florida is.
And I think that's fundamentally what's up.
And, and it was what made
sort of the Leafs conversation so interesting to me was, you know, you sort of go through that
Leafs-Panthers seven game series and people are like, well, Marner, Matthews, Nylander and
Tavares have combined for four goals. And it's like, yeah, that's about what Barkov, Kachuk, you know, uh, Bennett and Reinhardt combined for against the Leafs.
Like the, the Leafs lost that series because at the end of the day, they had a bunch
of guys like, you know, like Max Domi scored some goals for them, but let's be real.
Right.
Max Domi also lost a ton of puck battles in game seven.
Um, you know, up and down the line, uh, beliefs just didn't have as many good players like flat out this
loose terrain in line with, uh, Lundell and Marchand.
I mean, they're picking their teeth for people that, that to Chuck Bennett
line last night was just running rough shot over, over the, uh, Carolina
hurricanes.
And then, and then you get to Barkov and Reinhardt, two Selkie finalists on the
same first line. The way they play, they can kind of plug in any defender. Any defender seems to
play well there. It doesn't really matter because they play pretty simple hockey.
It's a lot of fun to watch. It's really impressive what they've been able to accumulate. Like they've accumulated so much, honestly, that you kind of look at that roster
and look at, and this is not just a Canucks criticism.
Like you look at the Canucks roster, but you can look at like 25 rosters in the
NHL and you just wonder like, how do you ever get from where this team is to
where Florida is now, right?
Like, how do you ever get there?
How do you ever amass that much, you know, high end talent?
Cause that's, that's just how absolutely loaded there.
Hey Drance, I was thinking this the other day
and I thought, oh, I'll ask Drance about it.
Have you ever seen a statistical breakdown of hits?
And I know not everyone's a big thing, big into
the hit stats, but have you ever seen it broken
down into forwards versus defensemen?
And do you think that might be valuable or even
like where the hits are taking place?
Because if they're taking place in your end of
the ice and it's mostly defensemen making those hits,
then you might have a problem. But if you've got a lot of hits taking place in
the offensive zone and it's your forwards making those hits, then maybe
that says something different. I've never seen anything predictive in terms of a
breakdown of hits or like hit locations being predictive of, you
know, who's gonna score next or the environment that you create. Maybe
you could find it. The truth is that for the most part, like the heaviest
correlation is a negative correlation between time of possession and hits.
And one thing that's pretty amazing about Florida is you'll
often find that, you know, they have double your zone time and
as many hits as you.
So I get what you're getting at.
I'd love to see the breakdown of like forwards versus
defensemen hits with Florida though.
Well, cause they're always, yeah, cause they're hitting
you in the offensive zone.
They're sending three guys.
If you look at, if you look at hits, uh, in the
playoffs right now, the leader's Zach Hyman.
And we've, we've kind of noticed like, hasn't
been scoring this much, but he sure has been
hit hitting.
And then it's, uh, Sam Bennett and Leo
Sturrienen, um, and like, so two Florida guys in
the top three of total hits.
And I think that says something about their team. It might not be, as you say, predictive.
So you can't just like correlate and be like, get
more hits and you're going to win, right?
Like Corsi or whatever.
But I think it does say something about the way
the team is built.
And it just brings me back to frankly, the Canucks.
And I look at the mix in the top six. And I'm just like, yeah, I know you just
start with good players.
Like that's where you should start with, but I
think you do have to have an eye on like guys
that you can win with in the playoffs.
Once you get there.
You, so look, I'm not going to completely
disagree with you, but let's also note that like
Zach Hyman came from that Leafs team where they
could never get it done in the
playoffs, right?
Matthew Kachuk, go look at his playoff stats
when he was a member of the Calgary Flames.
The conversations around Matthew Kachuk were not
this guy is a stone cold playoff winner, right?
Before he came to Florida.
Um, Sam Reinhardt, if you remember the conversation
around Sam Reinhardt when he was available. Oh yeah, yeah. In Florida, there's an. Yeah, yeah, Sam Reinhardt. If you remember the conversation around Sam Reinhardt when he was available.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sam Bennett.
I mean, 18 year old Sam Bennett was a playoff
stud and that Calgary Flames team.
Right.
I mean, that no one was suggesting that Sam
Bennett wasn't tough or that Matthew
Kachuck wasn't tough.
No, no, no.
People were suggesting that, uh, Sam Bennett
was, I just want the Canucks to get tougher.
I want their, I want them to be bigger and tougher.
You're right, I get it.
In the core, in the top six, not the bottom six.
No, I feel you.
You're right.
Like, you're right, zero disagreement here.
I also need, and I'm sorry about this,
I need to adjust my Christmas story glasses and just note, well,
well also Hyman, um, Bennett and, uh, who was the other guy?
Bennett and Luz Duran and have also played more games than
everyone else in the playoffs.
Sure.
Yeah.
I need to just do that to point that out, but, uh, no, I'm with you.
They need to be tough.
I mean, look, who are the connects best two players right now?
The best two players we know will be on this roster next year.
Quinn Hughes and it's Connor Garland.
Like they're both sub 190 pounds, right?
They're both sub five foot 10.
Those guys were your main drivers of play last season, right?
Would you say that?
They're your best players.
They're the best players on this team, not counting, you know,
Thatcher Damco if he's healthy, right?, that's it. Like, I don't know. There's,
it's as simple as that. They're there. This team's best players. Well, let's throw in
or alias Patterson, if he bounces back. Yeah. And it's like, okay, that's, you know, Patterson
has the size, but, um, or at least he has the height, but it's a different,
it's a different, it's a different feeling, right? Like it's a different,
there's a different texture to that entirely than,
than what you're getting out of those, you know, monsters in Florida. Um,
so yeah, I mean, I think they're, I think you're right.
Like I'm not even going to disagree with you. The way that Florida plays is
you know, withering, right? Like it looks withering. It looks miserable to play against them.
So it's not just that they also have the skill to punish your mistakes and
completely overwhelm you and create those mistakes because they're tough and aggressive.
But they're also big. They're heavy. A lot of those hits look
awful and
they play right up against it in terms of that line.
Right?
I mean, that hit on Jarvis, some of those hits that they're throwing look absolutely
miserable.
They are a very, very difficult team to play against.
So one thing though I do want to note, I actually think the Leafs, it's, it's,
it's really too bad that the Leafs carry with
them so much baggage and make it hard for us to
talk about sort of what they did well in that
second round series against the Florida Panthers
because they actually did make them sweat, right?
Like that game three that Florida pulled out of
the fire, like they
could have easily lost that.
Like just the truth is, is that Toronto could not hit what Florida was throwing
because they are too negative in terms of the way that they play, right?
They're, they're too much of a, of a sort of like an absorbed pressure team.
Um, they've become that over time.
And, and ultimately that's not going to work against the team
that's as good as Florida, but, um, the way that they were hitting
them on the counter, right?
The way that they were like, there was a lot of punting hunt.
There was, there was a lot of just push the battle into the neutral zone
and let's get a break, let's get our speed guys out moving.
There was a lot of chances that they took waiting and then having a player like a
tandem. Now this didn't happen frequently enough because, uh,
Toronto's D couldn't move the puck well enough,
but a lot of plays where they could, they'd make two high risk passes,
not just one, two high risk passes under pressure and spring breakaways or
odd man rushes the other way.
And they were actually really patient at sort of breaking down that like, you know, soft
rims and pressure game, that stress hockey approach that Florida takes.
And they generated a lot off of that sort of action.
And I actually think there's a template there, right?
Like Toronto did better than they should have against this Florida team.
And there's actually lessons in that for Pete DeBoer and Chris
Knobloch in the other side of this bracket.
Cause I don't think Carolina has the personnel to pull it off or the
interest in changing how they play, frankly.
But I think for whoever matches up with this Florida team, most likely
in the Stanley cup final, I actually think there's some pretty interesting tactical lessons about how to get this team from what Toronto put
on tape. And again, not something that anyone wants to discuss because everyone just wants
to discuss like Marner being a choker, but there was actually some pretty interesting
hockey stuff and a lot of how Toronto approached that I thought was pretty effective and interesting
in terms of how to negate Florida's just like overwhelming, uh, for checking.
Uh, Durant's real quick here.
I know that's tough for both of us sometimes.
Yes.
Um, do you think the Canucks will shop?
I'd be surprised, you know, I don't think this team has enough top four
defensemen, right?
Look, I think, I think this team's still team has enough top four defensemen. I think this team's still short
a top four defenseman, much less having enough of one to sort of spend that as a surplus.
I don't think you can afford to lose Hronik. I think trading Hronik feels to me to be somewhat contrary to the old mission keep, keep like mission, keep Quinn Hughes,
given Hughes's regard for his partner.
And I do think it just sort of blows a hole open in the roster. Now you can tell yourself a story about the Lander or Mancini being like
ready to take that role.
Um, they're not like they're, they're almost certainly not going to be as good
as Philip Ronek next season.
And we know how high the stakes are of next season for the Canucks.
I, you're better off creating youth, right? as filiparonik next season and we know how high the stakes are of next season for the Canucks.
You're better off trading youth, right? Like if you're going to look at your defense as a surplus,
which by the way, it's not true, right? Like this defense is not something that's just like,
set it and forget it, we're fine. This defense is still in need of investment.
So if you're going to, but if you're going to trade from it as a surplus, I think you need to
look at the younger D, especially on the right side, the Blander Mancini types
and move from that, uh, because I don't think you can afford to lose.
Aaronic like you're, you know, I've got a piece going up at the athletic
rip today, like very shortly about like where, how the Canucks stack up to the
average lineup of these four teams that are still standing and you know, they they're still a top four defensemen short, according to, you know,
what, what, what I'm sort of looking at.
Oh man.
I don't even want to see how the top six is stacked.
Oh, the forwards it's tough.
It's tough.
But you know what?
You know what, man?
The biggest, the biggest takeaway is that they're short, an elite
forward and a first line forward. And, and that's like the biggest takeaway. There's, there's other things that they're short, an elite forward and a first line forward, and that's like the biggest takeaway.
There's other things that they're short, but it's like, really, if
Pedersenbeth is back, you can add another elite forward and then you can
add another top line forward.
You should be okay.
But of course, adding two of those players and getting the Pedersenbeth back,
that seems like a heck of a parlay to pull off with about 13 million to spend.
Drantz, it's good to have you back, buddy.
Oh, Carter Verhege, great game last night. Three points, I think.
He was just a terrific player.
I got so many Verhege takes, bud.
We don't know. Sorry, we don't have time.
Drantz, we'll talk later.
Thomas Drantz from the Athletic Vancouver and Canucks talk here on the
Haliford and Bruff show on Sportsnet 650.
It is time now for one to watch brought to you by Delaney's OK Tire.
Tonight's one to watch is Stuart Skinner.
The big question facing Skinner tonight is, are we going to get the good
Stu Skinner or the bad Stu Skinner?
Because he has been very feast or famine for the Oilers thus far in the post season.
He has played six games so far in these playoffs.
He's either posted a shutout or has posted a safe percentage below a 33.
That's right.
It's either a shutout or he's saving less than 83% of shots face.
That's not great.
Now, Wednesday's loss in game one of the Western conference final was the worst
defeat that the Oilers have had since dropping game two all the way back in the
opening round against LA, a game that they lost six to a game where Stewart
Skinner ended up getting pulled in favor of Calvin Pickard.
And then Pickard went on a 6-0 run before he got injured
and Stuart Skinner took over the net.
Which I, you know what actually begs the question
of another guy to watch, what's going on
with Calvin Pickard?
Well, prior to the start of this series,
Oilers head coach, Chris Knobloch,
said that Pickard is still day to day.
He would not be ready for game one of this series,
but they expected him to be ready at some point be ready for game one of this series, but they expected
him to be ready at some point in the quote unquote middle of the series. This game to
count as the middle. Probably not. But if things don't go well for Stuart Skinner tonight,
you might want to keep an open ear for Calvin Pickard's crazy that the others are in the
conference finals and they've got a pretty good chance to win the Stanley Cup But we're still like is Calvin Pickard still hurt is he they might need him and they might need Calvin Pickard
Can he go in game three? Well, you got to watch game two today

And he is a presentation of the Clayton Public House.
It's Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the Halford and Brough Show on Sportsnet
650. What up Moj?
Good morning, gentlemen. How are you guys?
We are great. How's Kamloops, brother?
Kamloops has been fun.
It's been an interesting camp.
Obviously a lot of excitement.
I mean, there's always excitement in training camp,
but with the new regime with Buck Pearson,
some new players that are getting extended looks,
some questions to be asked on defense,
it's been intriguing, it's been a lot of fun.
I would imagine like, as you mentioned, with the new coach and with the new players,
that there might be even more energy and even more intensity and even more pace than your usual training camp.
Yeah, and that's one thing that's kind of surprised me.
And usually about, I don't know, 9, 10, 11 days in, you get that, you know, guys kind of start getting
a little fatigued.
It's, you know, it's the same routine.
But there's still a lot of spunk in their workups.
These guys are still flying around.
I watched practice yesterday along with Julio Caraveta and we commented on it.
It was like, you know, there's still a lot of energy and a lot of intensity in practice,
which is a good sign considering that, you know, they've been into this thing in what, 10 or 11 days?
And who knows?
It might happen today, it could happen tomorrow
or three days from now, it might not happen at all,
but so far so good in terms of the way
this team is keeping it going.
How was the exhibition game in Langford
and what were some of your takeaways
from the game against the Stamps?
It was cold, it was wet, how was that?
Yeah, yeah, fair enough.
And plus we're on, honestly, we were on some sort of makeshift scaffold that was like
three stories high and you basically had to climb a ladder vertically.
Like I mean it was, like there was no angle to it, it was just like almost straight up.
It was an interesting experience.
You know what we stayed at Bear, I've never stayed at Bear Mountain before.
Oh nice.
Oh it's awesome there.
Oh my gosh. Did you play? Did at Bear Mountain before. Oh, nice. Oh, it's awesome there. Oh my God.
Did you play?
Did you play the course?
Oh, you should.
No, we flew in like the Sunday night and then
obviously the game on Monday and we flew right
out afterwards, but what a beautiful, beautiful
hotel they have.
I mean, we saw the course.
I mean, obviously they didn't play it as I
mentioned, but just a beautiful vista from the
hotel.
The hotel was really nice.
Is there still a ton of building going on in Langford?
Last time I was there a couple of years ago, I was like,
is this the boom town of the world?
Yeah, I didn't really notice it.
I mean, you know, like I said, we just kind of came in
from the airport and went to the Bear Mountain.
So yeah, but anyway, in terms of the game, um, it
was what you'd expect from an exhibition game.
Um, and it's one guy'd expect from an exhibition game.
One guy who really stood out, if there's one guy that kind of flashed, was receiver Jermaine
Jackson.
He's a little bit of a scatback.
He's going to be playing slot.
He's about 5'9".
Had some time in the NFL, I believe, with the Raider, or probably the Saints.
He looked pretty good.
He caught four passes, also got a touchdown reception,
and he was running with the ones due to the injury
to Stanley Berryhill, so he's been practicing
with the first unit, so he's the guy to keep an eye out for,
and the other thing too with Jermaine Jackson,
he could factor into the return game as well.
You mentioned there's gonna be some tough decisions
for this club to make a wide receiver?
Yeah, I mean, if there's one group where I've kind of said,
you know, they've got some personnel,
they've got some depth, it's receiver.
And I'm talking about some of the new players
I brought in, they have a receiver by the name
of Seven McGee, all right?
And he's not named Seven after the Seinfeld episode.
He is the seventh child, he's got six older sisters.
That tracks, yeah.
Yeah, interesting story started off.
I love that, You'll be seven.
So yeah, so seven McGee's into the mix. He's had a really good camp. He's a guy that, you know,
you know, if you're looking at that Nick Dempski type of player that Buck Pierce had in Winnipeg,
well, he had Nick Dempski, but what type of player could that, you know, emerge in that role in BC?
It might be a guy like seven McGee. I've heard comparisons to Lucky Whitehead, smaller, but what type of player could that, you know, emerge in that role in BC? It might be a guy like seven McGee.
I've heard comparisons to lucky whitehead smaller, but you know, one of these guys
that can just about do everything on a football field.
They have another receiver by the name of the Jared Gibson, who's had a really
good camp. And then as we mentioned, Jermaine Jackson, they had a bunch of guys,
even the kid that got hurt on in Langford, David Dyrd was an interesting story.
He played rookie ball in the Boston Red Sox organization. He's a 20th round pick and he looked good.
Unfortunately he tore his ACL in that game so he is done for the year. But yeah
in terms of receiver and to be honest I think Stanley Berryhill and even
Aiden Eberhardt or Eberhardt pardon me two guys that could be pushed by this
group below them. I know I mentioned this last week when talking about running the football, but I was reading,
I think it was Steve Ewen in the province.
He had an interview with Ryan McMade in the BC Lions general manager and he talked about
it.
He said, you got to be able to run the ball in the fall, which is a great slogan.
I think they should stick with that one, but you got to be able to run the ball in the
fall to win.
I know Buck is a former CFL quarterback and I know they've got a
pretty elite passer in Nathan work but I am intrigued by the amount of emphasis
that they're putting on running the football. Have you noticed that play out
through what are we now like a couple weeks into training camp? Yeah and you
know the big thing about running the football and you're bang on with that
and it's funny because as I mentioned last week that the offense the players
on offense are so excited about this scheme
that they're putting in and they're gonna hit you
every which way, I mean, Justin McInnis ran a jet sweep
in practice last week and we were talking to Justin,
he goes, you can't remember the last time
we ran a jet sweep, but you know,
I've seen Kion Hatcher run a jet sweep,
other players as well, so you know,
they're incorporating, hit screens, you name it.
A lot of the stuff that you saw in Winnipeg, you're going to see in BC.
And you know,
we were talking to James Butler about that and how excited he is. He says,
you can see why Brady Olivera ran for so many yards. And okay,
he's Brady Olivera, but he's also got a good offensive line in front of him.
But the scheme that Buck Pierce run,
really kind of what it does is it creates doubt on
defense with all the pre-snap motion, all the areas that you can hit the misdirection,
you name it.
And because of that, it allows the running game to probably play at a different level.
And I think that James was talking about that and that's what has him excited about this.
And obviously the Lions are looking forward
to the season in terms of establishing that running game.
Something that's, you know, you know,
they had William Stambeck and you know,
for the life of me, I'll tell you a quote
from Jordan McSimmick as we're heading into the game
in Saskatchewan.
I said, so we're gonna unleash Stambeck in this game.
He goes, we're gonna pass to win
and we're gonna run to seal it.
And soon as I heard that, I was like my gosh come on like really you know it's about
running the football in the fall you talked about it Rick Maiden talked
about it you have to be able to run the football in the playoffs and that's
something that Buck Pierce knows and Ryan Rick Maiden knows and hopefully
they'll be able to do that this year. Okay so the BC Lions played the first
preseason game
of the entire Canadian Football League.
That was the one in Langford that we talked about.
Nothing this week, and then they've got the game
on May 30th, so a week today against Edmonton,
another pre-season game.
In the interim, scrimmage or no scrimmage?
What are they gonna be doing up there?
Well, they have FanFest on Saturday tomorrow,
and there is no scrimmage, and they're just gonna have
a practice.
One of the reasons why is they got kind of banged up. Nothing, you know, I mentioned
Deirdre and the receiver towards ACL. They've got a couple of other players that are nursing
injuries but they've got a lot of guys who are just nicks and bumps and they're not gonna
scrimmage. I don't think the plan was to scrimmage regardless because of the fact that just the
way the schedule lays out but given the injuries, given the guys that are bumped up they're not going to scrimmage so they're
gonna go all the way through just keep on practicing and obviously have the
game in Edmonton Friday night so we'll see what happens in terms of the lineup
I imagine there'll be a veteran laden lineup because clearly the veterans
didn't play in Victoria so I imagine you'll probably see them for about a
half and then the the uh, the other players,
the rookies will probably come in and play the second half or vice versa.
Okay. I got two more for you and non football division, although English football,
and then our traditional ask us anything Friday food one for Moj. So first,
it is the final day of Premier league action on Sunday. Everyone kicks off at 8 AM.
Our time, huge implications, not just for European spots
for some of these clubs, but for Bob the Moj Marjanovic
and his Premier League fantasy team.
What's at stake here, Moj?
Like, I had like a hundred point lead,
maybe about six weeks ago.
Yikes.
It dwindled to like, I don't know, six points last week,
and then I clutched up, I think I gained like 14 or 15 points on the second place team. I used my bench boost
I don't even know the guy's name. He's on some team with a yellow jersey, but he had like 11 points
He had 11 points for me and he did like he was my savior because he was actually on my bed
I like it. I like it.
He plays on that same team with Alton Norrie or whatever, the defender.
Hold on, look them up. I'll tell you what it was.
This is great.
The guy who clutched up for me was Juergen Strand-Larsen.
Oh, Strand-Larsen.
Yeah, he got me 11 points.
So anyway, it's the final weekend.
I've led this thing almost from the start,
and hopefully I can seal the deal this weekend
because it'd be outstanding to win
a premiership fantasy pool.
Of course, as I mentioned, my daughter lives in London.
She got me in this with all her friends.
So think about 15 people in this pool, all of them Brits.
They all got that eight-hour time advantage,
and I wind up winning this thing.
I think it'll be one of my greatest
fantasy accomplishments ever.
Strand Larsson plays for Wolves is the club that you're looking for.
And it's more of an orange hue than yellow, but we will accept yellow
for the purposes of this conversation.
I also have Rayan Althanori on my team as well from that squad.
A lot of hyphenated names in the Premier League, eh?
A lot of hyphenated names.
Before we let you go, we want wanna ask you a food ask us anything,
but regional cuisine, Kamloops, what is it like?
Have you found your favorite spot to eat?
I believe it was Arpon texted in with a wide list
of his favorite establishments in Kamloops,
but I'm curious to get Moj's favorite dining spots
in Kamloops.
You know, I'll be honest,
there's a little hole in the wall restaurant downtown called
Casa Azul and it's run by a guy named Cesar and great guy and they're just super friendly
and it's nothing fancy, but the food is really good.
It's authentic and I love that place.
That's like my go-to in Kamloops.
There's other places as well.
A couple of really good places are Red-eyed Brewing and Redbeard
Brewing. They're owned by the same people and that's over on the North Shore. By
the way, the pastrami sandwich at Redbeard Brewing is to die for. It is so
good and their natural hot chicken sandwiches at both places, excellent.
Pizza at Redbeard, great. But yeah, my go-to here probably if I had to say go-to,
like I said, it's just like it it's a hole in the wall place downtown.
It's run by like a, it's just a young guy and his family
and I love it.
It's called Casa Azul, so that's my place in Gammers.
Moj, there's nothing I enjoy more than hearing you say
that some food is to die for.
I was gonna say, if this sports thing
doesn't work out for you, you could always pivot.
You can always pivot to being like, not a food critic, but a food enjoyer.
Cause you enjoyed it.
That would be your catchphrase.
Hey, by the way.
Dying for food with Bob Marjanovic.
Brough hit me up for a contact for a barbecue.
Rusty Johnson, he did Nathan's receiver group
and I asked Nathan, I said, hey Nathan,
how did, Nathan just shook his head, he goes,
dude, he goes, I was off the charts. He was unbelievable.
Like Rusty Johnson, I know if you get that barbecue thing coming up, get Rusty,
he will not be disappointed. Anybody who's, you see,
I think he still does a segment on TV with global or whatever.
And he did a couple of segments when Donnie and I had the show. Um,
his food is like, you've met, I'm going to say it again to die for his brisket,
his ribs, you name it.
Um, Rusty's tremendous.
So highly recommend you get in touch with Rusty for your event.
Rusty Johnson sounds like a barbecue guy.
That's true.
Either that or a NASCAR driver or maybe both.
Yeah.
Here comes Rusty Johnson in the brisket car
We're out of time mode thanks for doing this today, buddy. We appreciate it enjoy can loops to the rest of camp
We'll do this again next Friday by the way, Toby. I know I'm back in about an hour. Oh nice. Enjoy, buddy
Take care see moach. That's Bob the mode Mar Marjanovic on the Halford and Bref show
on Sportsnet 650.
A presentation of the Clayton Public House.
Okay, let's do a quick ask us anything here.
Let's do a couple bro.
Okay.
Bref doesn't like it that I keep saying let's go.
Yeah, it's like Halfords been watching too many
YouTube golf episodes.
Let's go.
It's like, am I co-hosting with Bryson DeChambeau here? Let's go. It's like, am I, am I cohosting with
Bryson DeChambeau here?
Uh.
Let's go.
We're so bad.
Let's go.
Let's go.
We are so back.
Well, let's go is also the name of Tom Brady's
podcast with Jim Grave.
It's good enough for Tom Brady.
I think it's good enough for me.
Very creative, creative title.
Let's go.
Okay.
Do you want to ask us anything?
Kevin and Langley, uh, what's your take on the
new 10,000 seat arena coming to Surrey?
Completion kind of lines up with when the Abbey Canucks could move. I think they signed a 10-year commitment in Abbey.
Does the Aqualini's possibly have any skin in the game on this project in Surrey?
Hotel, conference center, retailer, sounds like retail. Sounds like something that he
would be interested in.
Maybe I have no idea about that, but I think the city of Surrey could use a 10,000 seat arena.
You know, there's all sorts of concerts that come
come through, but also I think we all wonder, is
this going to have a main hockey tenant?
And for me, the obvious candidates would be
the Abbotsford Canucks.
Um, I think the Alkaline's have an agreement
that they run the Abbotsford arena.
So they operate it.
They have an agreement with the city there.
Uh, I think it goes in five year increments and then
they can renew.
So they're already, they already kind of have a
piece of the Abbotsford arena and they have a
contract that goes well beyond.
So I don't know if that would affect their ability
to be involved with this Surrey arena.
But I also wonder about a WHL team,
either an expansion team or, um, I, you know, the,
the Vancouver Giants, Ladi, you would know
more about this.
They seem happy, uh, in their arena in Langley,
but you know, I, I don't know if like attendance
is, it's not a huge arena, right?
No.
So attendance is kind of capped.
What's the capacity? 5,000, 4,000?
I was going to say maybe six tops, but yeah,
it's probably under that.
So if you, if you get to Surrey and it's 10,000,
um, you have more ability to make money.
I don't know if that's realistic to expect crowds.
5,276.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if that's realistic to expect crowds. 5,276.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Um, the economics of an AHL team versus a WHL team are obviously very different.
Um, you know, I think the Canucks, since they
own their AHL team, they also would like to
control the arena too.
Now I don't know how Surrey is going to run it.
Are they going to say, okay, we're going to build
the arena and then we're going to contract it out
and you run it?
In that case, maybe the Canucks could be tempted
to say, sorry Abbotsford, but you know, we got an
out in our contract here and now we're going to
go run the Surrey thing.
I have no idea, but I do think that like, I'd be
surprised if Surrey builds a 10,000 seed arena.
If there isn't a main AHL or WHL tenant.
Surrey Eagles could use a new rink.
So Surrey is looking a little old these days.
Is it?
I'll take your word on that one.
Yeah, but.
35 years old now.
But is that, is that big money enough?
The bigger 10,000 seed arena. it might be a fallback plan.
Cause there's a couple of teams in the league that play in rinks that big,
Penticton for the rest of the season.
Penticton's a good team now, right?
Cranbrook had a dub team.
They play a BCHL team out of that rink now.
So it might be like a fallback plan.
Or a secondary tenant.
Yeah.
You know, but I feel like if you're going to build that, obviously you want to have
But I feel like if you're going to build that, obviously you want to have an arena for
concerts or conferences, but you'd want an AHL or WHL team.
And I wonder if they would get that committed to before they actually start building.
I don't know.
Just remember Doug McCallum walked so Brenda Locke could run.
What was his capacity? 70,000? I think he wanted 60,000.
60,000.
Yeah.
So it's one of those like-
He's like the Canucks could practice there.
Like, what the hell are you talking about?
You know, shoot for the moon
and maybe you'll land among the stars.
That's kind of what this is, right?
Like you wanted a 60,000 seat stadium
and then you're gonna get a 10,000 seat arena.
And the Canucks practice facility will not be there.
Right.
That's a hike.
Yeah.
That would be too far.
The players don't live around there. Literally a bridge a hike. Yeah. That would be too far. The players don't live around there.
Literally a bridge too far.
Yeah.
And sometimes traffic.
I don't know if anyone's noticed in Vancouver, a bit of traffic sometimes.
Do you want to, okay, I'm going to defer to you.
Do you want to do a sports or non-sports ask us anything next?
You choose, buddy.
All right.
Stop being so deferential.
Shoot the puck, bud.
Okay.
Call in into Austin.
Move those feet. Ask us anything.
With more Canadians staying within our
borders for vacations this year, what do you
recommend for a summer Canadian vacation?
This is interesting.
This is always hard and it takes me back to Tom
Segura a bit where he's like, well, I don't know
you, you know, like I don't know what you're interested in.
Sure.
If you're into golfing on your vacation,
I've got lots of suggestions.
Wonder how many people are gonna be going
to the Calgary Stampede this summer.
That would be fun.
That would be fun.
I've never been before.
I've never been to the Stampede.
I've been to Calgary many a time, but never for Stampede.
We should do shows from the Stampede.
We should go as a show.
Stampede show?
Mm-hmm.
I've been to the Maritimes twice.
Yeah, all Maritimes are awesome.
Prince Edward Island in the summer,
it's a long haul to get there.
It's expensive, right?
It's as far as you can go in Canada
from Vancouver, really, but.
Newfoundland, buddy.
Right, but point taken. you wouldn't actually go there though
Yes, you would it's beautiful. The Maritimes are great. I had a blast can confirm have been several times. Yeah, it's great
The if you're if you're again the Tom Sager a bit if if you're a golfer
You're that's gonna be an amazing amazing vacation for you, but I didn't golf at all and I still had a great time.
Like, it's fantastic.
So it is like a cool opportunity to plunk down somewhere
and like take a shot in the dark.
Call it a toss.
Have you ever been up north to like real north like the no.
The territories I have not.
Have you? No, I want to go.
Yeah, I haven't even been.
I think that's the only part other than the north.
The territories I haven't been to.
I think going in the summer there would be interesting because I wonder if I'd go crazy
because it's always light up.
Yeah, like one hour.
Was there a movie with Jack Nicholson in it?
Deshining?
No.
There was one movie where, or was it Pacino?
They went up and went crazy.
I think of Insomnia.
Anger management. Okay shut up. No Insomnia had Robin Williams and Al Pacino.
Yeah that was the one I'm talking about. Yeah yeah. Pacino and Robin Williams.
It was about the guys that couldn't sleep. It was filmed I don't know why the director's
name is escaping me but it was filmed by the Oppenheimer, Dark Knight director.
It's one of his early movies. Okay.
Christopher.
Nolan. Nolan. Nolan.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it was a Christopher Nolan movie.
It's actually a really good movie.
It was a very good movie, yeah.
I've never been up north, I think.
You know, who knows?
I have a off, fun, funny story about that.
I actually auditioned for that movie.
It was one of my first early auditions.
And you fell asleep.
Actually, I got pretty far.
That's not good for it.
I got pretty far, but I didn't get it, honestly.
What was gonna be your position?
Or role?
I basically called it a role.
I was one of the main kids' friends,
and I think I had like four or five lines.
It wasn't a big part, it was a small part.
But regardless, I remember auditioning for it.
There are no small parts, Andy.
At that point, nobody knew who Christopher Nolan was.
I don't think we knew what the cast was. But even back then, I even back then I was like us a cool movie. It was a stressful movie to watch
Oh, yeah, it's it's intense. My dog was in at home, and that would have been so stressed out
