Halford Brough, Sportsnet 650.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if someone new to the city or the market,
like Stuart Armstrong, for example, new member of the Vancouver Whitecaps,
had to wait on hold while we played that song.
What have I got myself into?
I miss Inverness.
Is this MLS?
Go back to Dundee, like now?
I'm not prepared for any of this.

Moj joins us now, I believe from Montreal,
on the Halford & Braff Show on Sportsnet 650.
Good morning, Moj.
Well, I better be in Montreal because it would be a hell of a flight from Vancouver to Montreal and make kickoff tonight.
I was going to say, you better get on the tarmac, buddy.
Apparently, you did a hit from the tarmac when I was away.
But I digress.
Shortest hit in our station's history, two minutes.
No, no, no.
It wasn't even two minutes.
It was probably like about, I'd probably say like 45 seconds, maybe a minute.
So it was up there for the shortest hit of all time which is held by david pratt with david devol the golfer how to remind us of how that went again so we had a producer
eric stansfield who'd been getting he'd been chasing devol for a long time through nike and
the whole gist of the interview was to talk about this new club set
that Nike had coming out.
He was promoting everything.
And, I mean, having done those type of interviews many times,
I mean, you go in, you talk about the Nike stuff or whatever,
and then you get into maybe what's happening with the guy's career,
and then at the end you wrap up with whatever they're promoting, right?
You kind of sandwich everything.
So we get Deval on the whole gist of it. You've got to talk about the Nike golf clubs that he's promoting, blah? You kind of sandwich everything. So we get Duvall on, the whole gist of it, you gotta talk about the
Nike golf clubs that he's promoting, blah, blah, blah.
Pratt,
first question out of the block, David,
your game's going south, what happened?
And Duvall starts answering the question
like he's about 20 seconds in and all of a
sudden goes, guys, I gotta go.
Sorry, but i gotta go guys
and he hung up well the producer phones stansfield back up and gives him an earful
stansfield looking at pratt like what the hell are you doing
all right it's one of them right so it was it was close oh i remember the days when the
vancouver audience couldn't get enough of david duvall so Pratt was absolutely bang on there. It was the golf story that was hanging over the city.
Moj, here's a good question for you.
Could you make the argument that tonight's game
between the Lions and the Alouettes,
in terms of hype, in terms of storylines,
is the biggest in the CFL this season?
Ooh, I don't know if you could make the hype
that it's the biggest of the season,
but probably I wouldn't have a problem
saying it's the biggest of the week.
But yeah, you're probably, you know,
here's the thing.
If the Lions had come in in this game
on a four-game win streak,
rather than just coming off, you know,
snapping a five-game losing streak,
probably, right?
But I think there's a lot of recency bias right now.
So, yeah, you know, given the circumstances, yeah,
this could be a great cup preview.
You never know.
I mean, the trip to Victoria did wonders for the Lions.
And what it did, it gave the team three days, three nights on the road,
four days, whatever way you want to calculate it.
And it gave the guys an opportunity to kind of recharge
and just kind of hang out and just do stuff.
It wasn't your typical road trip.
And guys talked about that prior to the game.
And, you know, we talked to the coaches,
and it was just a great experience and allowed guys to kind of reconnect.
And remember, it's a guy in the CFL season.
They're 11 games in.
For a lot of the guys that are first-year players out of college,
their season's already over.
So it's rejuvenated this team
and, you know, they made a couple personnel
changes. Obviously, Matthew Betts helped
moving T.J. Lee to linebacker. Kind of
gave the defense a real spark. You know,
Gary Peters and other guys will talk about this being the best
configuration that they have in terms of personnel
the way they're set up now because
it's been a constant shuffling of the deck
all year long.
So it's going to be real interesting to see what happens tonight in Montreal.
I'm really intrigued to see what happens.
Do we see the Lions team to play against Ottawa last week?
If that team shows up, we should have a hell of a football game.
Or do we see a team that maybe reverts back to the form that they showed in those five games?
I don't think they will.
I think they're going to have a really good game tonight.
If they come out with a win, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
What's the bigger strength for Montreal, the offense or the defense?
I know this is a tough question.
Okay, it's not a tough question.
And I'll say this because their defense led by Darnell Sankey,
it's an unbelievable defense.
They're playing great.
And what it does, I think it kind of masks some of Montreal's lack of ability
to push the ball downfield.
If you look at Montreal's yards after catch totals, I mean, they're just ridiculous.
Walter Fletcher leads the league.
Julio told me last night, whatever, I'm just going to rattle off some numbers.
They'll be in the neighborhood.
I won't be bang on, but he has like 461 yards receiving,
like 422 were yards after the catch.
I mean, it's just ridiculous.
So what they do, they love the short passing game. They love to hit
those receivers with the hit screens.
They love to hit Fletcher out of the back
field and put
the ball in the athlete's hands. Now,
if you get them into
a track meet where maybe they're down by
14 points or 20 points or whatever,
now they've got to push
the ball downfield, which I don't think is Cody Fajardo's strength.
So that defense really complements the offense
and allows the offense to kind of nickel and dime you to death.
So, you know, that's the key, and that's a big if.
Can you put points on that defense and make it into a track meet?
Nobody's been able to do it, so they have continued success.
How was the experience in victoria it was unbelievable um i haven't been to victoria probably like about 10 or 15 years i can't remember the last time i went to victoria
probably to have tea at the empress no we were uh i think it's called the grand pacific or something
like that okay and it was like we're right there in the harbor and i'll
tell you one thing it was like you know our president duane reno told us it's going to be
like a mini gray cup and it was i mean we were doing you know shows we were doing appearances
it was it was busy but it was a lot of fun um i even did a horse and carriage ride if you saw
that on the live twitter account which is a lot of fun. Did you really?
Yeah, I did.
Who did you do it with? By yourself?
It was the driver, Tally Ho.
We did a little horse, and they did a little tour through Victoria,
and we talked about the game a little bit, and, you know,
made a really good point.
You know, I tied it all in.
I said, hey, if you want to win, you have to have the horses up front, right?
So there you go.
Did you tell the horse lady that the game is won in the trenches?
Yeah, yeah.
I learned to ask the horse if he could play, like, you know, line,
whether he could play offensive line or defensive line.
I asked him right at the end of the video.
He was a good dude.
Speaking of Bob, the Moj, Rusty, Bob the Moj Marjanovic here
on the Halifax and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Moj, what did you think of Matthew Betts' performance on the Halliburton Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Moj, what did you think of Matthew
Betts' performance
on the weekend?
I like to think that
even though it wasn't
a whirlwind, he did
have a sack, but it
wasn't like he totally
took over.
I feel like he might
have given the entire
unit a shot in the
arm, a little bit
more energy, because
the defense played
very well in
Victoria.
Yeah.
I've got to tell you
a good Betts story.
So after the game,
now you've got to
realize playing at Royal Athletic Park was pretty Spartan.
And the Lions, what they did is they gave the Red Blacks all the amenities, so to speak.
They had the locker rooms in the stadium.
They had, you know, their play-by-play guy was in a booth wearing a scaffold.
Their bench was in the shade.
The Lions were in the sun. Just about every little thing the Lions could do to, you know,
satisfy the reflects they did.
So as a result, the Lions had very, very Spartan amenities.
And what I mean by Spartan, I mean, you know,
it's like the old Empire Field days.
Guys are changing in trailers.
They had about three or four trailers set up
in one of the end zones. And after
the game, post-game, they actually had
guys, like, they had these
tents that somehow, some
way they hooked up showers in, right?
Like temporary showers. So guys were showering
in tents. So
one of the members of the organization
goes, he goes, think about that. He goes,
four days ago, he's in the NFL where he did everything.
And four days later, he's showering in a tent.
Four days later, he's like, are we camping?
What's going on here?
Some sort of music festival broke out here.
It was a one-time deal, obviously.
But, you know, guys didn't mind it for the one time, I guess.
But, you know, I thought Betts played pretty well.
I mean, given the fact he has been playing football, right?
So there's a bit of an adjustment in the sense that you have to give up that yard off the ball.
But when you play in that first game, you play with a lot of juice, right?
So that's the thing that I think got Betts through.
And he's had a week practicing.
Hey, playing in Montreal, I think he'll have some juice in the tank again tonight.
I mean, this is his hometown.
He's going to have a lot of family and friends here.
So I think he'll be ready to go as well.
Dan texts into the show.
I saw the horse and buggy video.
The Tally Ho just recently announced that the horse has retired.
Did you cause that much?
He's just getting up there.
So, you know, maybe.
We haven't asked us anything here from Jay and Poco.
Hold on one sec.
We're in Montreal.
We've got to be talking about food because last night's late night food experience was rather unique.
But so anyways, what's the question?
Hold on.
We've got lots of time here, Moj.
I know you normally only do three-minute interviews with us, but we've got another 10 minutes here.
Okay.
So Jay and Poco, ask us anything.
It's not food-related, but we can get to that.
Ask us anything. It's not food-related, but we can get to that. Ask us anything.
At the start of the CFL season,
did you think there was any chance that three Eastern teams
would have better records than any Western team?
No.
I didn't.
You know, at the start of the year,
I said this at the start of the year,
I said BC and Winnipeg would regress.
I think Saskatchewan was going to get better.
I thought Edmonton was going to get better. I wasn't a big fan of Calgary getting better. And that's kind of
played out, but it's played out more to the extreme than I thought. I didn't think BC and
Winnipeg would regress to being, at this point, 500 teams, right? I thought they would go from
teams that won, say, 13 or 14 games to maybe teams that won 11 maybe 12 right or maybe 10 um i didn't
see them as 500 teams so um i kind of predicted what was going to happen but i just didn't predict
it to this extreme um so that's the way i kind of look at it yeah so and obviously the east has
taken advantage of it okay now tell us your eating plans for Montreal. What was this late night food last night?
I want to know about this. Well, first off, we went
down to Old Port. We went to a, because
T-Mart's with us, of course, so I
treated T-Mart. I said, T-Mart, we've got to go for Portuguese.
Okay. So we went to
this place called Solmar in Old
Port, and Old Port's just tremendous.
Then we went down
right to the first street on Old Port. I don't know
what it is. We went to a rooftop bar called Aubergine, which was tremendous.
You know, nice little view of the city and all that.
Then Ubered back up to the top of Crescent Street.
There's a bar there called Stogie's.
Well, it's a cigar bar.
So a bunch of the Lion Stappers were in there and we had some cigars.
And, you know, the thing is I've been losing weight.
I've been spinning like every day. I've got to go down to the gym and spin today like dj and i've been
losing all this weight and like last night you know i ate sensibly it wasn't that bad
and then at the end of the night it's like hey we're going to la belle provance which is like
some sort of fast food place on the way to the on the way to the hotel and they've got hot dogs
there and i'm like i gotta have a hot dog like in montreal you gotta have the hot dogs right because they steam them they do such a great job so i
ordered the michigan i don't know i didn't even know what the michigan was i said like one was a
grilled hot dog the other is the michigan i go give me the michigan so i get the michigan it's
basically a chili dog right and i was like meanwhile steve chang the lion photographer
he had the grilled hot dog and i'm looking at this thing and going, that's what I want.
Because it was steamed, the bun.
I go, how is it?
He goes, it's unreal.
So then I got just like a grilled hot dog, right?
So then we're walking home.
Are you aware of where the closest hospital is in Montreal?
No.
Just in case you need this.
So then we're walking home.
And guess what we walk by?
Dunn's.
So now we got to go into Dunn's, right?
At like, I don't know, 2 o'clock, 1.30 in the morning.
So we go into the Dunn's
and now order a smoked meat sandwich.
Right? I'm just thinking, my
diet is just like, it's just crashing
right now. So, how to
smoke meat at Dunn's is like, I don't know,
1.30 or so. You had not one, but
two hot dogs and then you chased two hot
dogs with a smoked meat sandwich.
Hey, I didn't eat the bread. This is like the Moj Cent meat sandwich. Hey, I didn't eat the bread.
This is like the Moj Centurion or something.
I didn't eat the bread.
Too many carbs.
So today
there's this Portuguese
place that David Menard told a bunch
of guys. Everybody got hooked on it
last year. And a bunch of guys
are going up there today
from the staff. we're probably going
to go up around one o'clock or so but this is portuguese place that has this like this tremendous
chicken lineups out the door the whole nine yards so there's a real quandary today because at some
point i'd like to get the schwartzes i always get the schwartzes in montreal my my guy frank takes
care of me so i gotta get the schwartzes and the chicken placed before kickoff.
So it's going to be a bit of a quandary in trying to figure out how to do this.
I was thinking maybe like I was telling Baker, Matt Baker,
I go, Matt, the last meeting guy.
I go, go there, pick up the chicken.
And then I was talking to the guy,
do you think the chicken will hold by the time we take off
so I can have it after the game?
And everyone was kind of like, no, probably not.
So what I'm thinking of doing is having maybe like the smoked meat
at around 12,
or having the chicken
at 12 go to this restaurant,
Popeye's,
Schwartz's,
before the game,
have the smoked meat sandwich
because that'll hold
a little better.
Maybe I could have that
at halftime
or after the game.
And then the other thing too,
apparently the press bowl,
I know this,
the press box food
in Montreal is top notch
and they also serve
hot dogs at halftime.
So it's a real dilemma.
The amount...
Is there a
muumuu shop that you can visit in montreal because i think you might need to wear that coming home
oh i'm telling you it's just like like i said the diet's gone out the window but hey when you're in
montreal and the other thing too is cfl schedule like why can't we come to montreal five times in
two years because you die you would die they'd run out of shaved meat, apparently.
Moj.
This has been a whirlwind.
Damn.
Enjoy the game if you make it through it.
It's going to be quite a good one,
and I'm sure everyone listening to your call will be also praying for you.
I'm proud of you, man.
I'm proud of you.
I am proud of you.
There's not that many people that'll go hot dogs,
meat sandwich, meat sandwich hot dogs
in a 24-hour window.
And then wonder, I wonder what the press box food is going to be like.
How do I get a chicken wedged in there somewhere?
It's good.
It's good.
Thanks for doing this, Moj.
Enjoy the game.
All right, fellas.
Have a great weekend.
Yeah, have a good one.
Cheers.
That's Bob the Moj Marjanovic on a meat.
He's a meat seeker right now on the Alfred and Brett show.
There it is.
On Sportsnet.
Meat seeker.
Sportsnet 650 uh some people are asking if the copy got changed on that read because i no longer say meat seeker
i say introducing secret that was my change that was i did that it was an incorrect change you
should have not done that no we we did like the so the moment after uh i said it for the first time
we got an email like 11 seconds afterwards.
They're like, please change the copy of that.
Everyone, and I mean everyone,
knew that Meat Seeker was not the right way to write that.
Tim in South Surrey, ask us anything, guys.
What's the funniest sponsor read
in which you found yourselves laughing in studio
and when the show was done?
For me, it had to be The Lady and the Tramp
and Meat Seekers yesterday.
I tell you, I was laughing so hard.
The car next to me started laughing for no
reason.
I love the hijinks.
Don't ever stop it.
Tim in South Surrey.
I bet he likes music on the golf course.
Sounds like a fun loving guy.
Sounds like a music little tunes on the cart
kind of guy.
That's what they call him.
Tunes on the cart, Tim.
There's another one related to that.
Ask us anything.
Unsigned,
is it weird to have
such a uniquely intimate relationship
with my morning sports radio hosts
that when I heard
the three-foot hot dog comment,
I immediately proclaimed
lady in the tramp
before Halford got the bike down?
Got to put the lady in the tramp
on that bad boy.
Yeah.
Ask us anything.
We just spoke to the
Lions play-by-play guy.
If you guys had the choice
to be a play-by-play
commentator for any sport,
what would it be?
And for what team
or league would it be?
I think I'd just be
so bad at it.
I think I could do
baseball because it's slow.
Hockey's important.
You do hockey play-by-play too.
You do hockey.
Yeah, Chad.
That's my dream, NHL play-by-play.
That's what I'm working towards.
So tell us about when you first started doing it.
Were you one of these kids that was doing it
in his bedroom by himself?
Oh, yeah, over games, over NHL video games.
Stop snickering, all right?
In your room by yourself.
Doing the play-by-play No friends or family
In my bedroom
Long bathroom breaks
So you're, what experience do you have?
You've called some junior games, right?
Oh yeah, I'm in my third season now
I've got a couple seasons under my belt
It's so much fun
And it's nice to see, sometimes you wonder
If or not you're
getting better and i look back at when i started oh it was shocking really so what did you bad
what was what's the biggest challenge for you definitely keeping up with things away from the
puck i think following the play is is fine but keeping track of line changes when the puck's at
one end making sure you know who's coming off the bench and on the ice at all times. So, you know, quick passes,
being able to keep up with who's getting what,
that's the biggest.
I remember Blake Price telling me
that one of the tough parts with junior hockey
is that there's often a lot of play in the neutral zone
where the puck just gets continuously turned over.
I complain about that all the time.
You can't call it because it's like...
It plays a little scrambly out there.
Yeah, he said you just have to let it breathe call it because it's like... And he plays a little scrambly out there. Yeah, he said,
you just have to let it breathe.
And sometimes it's for a minute.
I'm going to quickly tell...
My biggest challenge
in any one game ever
was Laddie works in the same league
that I do.
Right.
And his team beat my team
17 to 1.
And I will tell you what,
at the 15, 16 time
your team is getting scored on,
it is hard to find creative ways to say it.
Right.
Yeah.
I just really admire the best play-by-play guys
because I just think they're incredible at their jobs.
Shorty and Batch, we're so lucky in this market
with those guys.
They just do it effortlessly, right?
And Zach's talking about knowing all the line changes,
knowing who's on the ice, not just for the home team,
but for the other team as well,
while maintaining that sense of narrative in the game.
Do you know what I mean?
There's the micro, which is calling the play,
but then there's the whole macro of it,
which is the game narrative that you're trying to
also follow along while you've got a producer in your ear saying hey we're going to show this
so um you're spot on with shorty and batch and this isn't to diminish their work of the fact
when the times that they come on the station but while you're on vacation um we got Peter Drury on the show.
A-Dog, in one of the more adorable chases of all time,
didn't know who Peter Drury was.
So he chased him with the confidence and the gusto
of him just being another regular guy, right?
He's like, hey, what up? It's A-Dog.
You like him on the show?
Really, the first thing I said was, sup, Pete?
And Peter Drury, that was the only time
where I actually felt kind of awestruck because...
You've heard him in so many moments.
And he's got that.
He's so poetic when he...
Yeah, yeah.
And he's got the English accent, obviously.
Did you make him say, heartbreak yet again for England?
No.
I almost...
Could you just say magisterial?
But I didn't.
But that was great and i remember thinking like
uh you know football soccer would be an interesting one to call because there's long passages of
nothingness the joke is always like halfback passes to midfield yeah yeah passes he finds a
way to be like explained but also he's very poetic and some people say to his detriment like over the top sometimes but i think the play-by-play guys in soccer international soccer agree or disagree with me
okay they're more honest than some of the north american play-by-play guys yeah that's they are
not afraid to say what just happened it is a very very different approach to calling a game for sure.
Like almost to the point where the play by play guy might editorialize as
opposed to.
Absolutely.
You know,
and that's very interesting because oftentimes you have a color commentator
to do that for you.
Like I'll call,
I'll say exactly what happened with complete objectivity.
And then you tell me if it's good or bad,
but I have noticed that too with,
especially in Europe.
Oftentimes the guy describing it will also be like,
ooh, that was dreadful.
Like that sort of thing, right?
Which is interesting. Or when you're talking about the macro performance,
not afraid to say this is a dreadful performance by whoever.
Right.
Okay.
We are still doing our contest, by the way.
Let's do a quick reset here.

We're going to do some
what we learned
from our side of the table.
Jason Brough is going to get
right back into the hockey talk.
The Canucks talk,
courtesy of 32 Thoughts,
which has a new host, by the way, Kyle Bukoskis.
And Kyle and Elliot Freeman were talking,
well, they went through all 32 teams.
It was like a two and a half hour podcast.
Here is a key part from their segment about the Vancouver Canucks.
And it's about, you guessed it, Thadger Demko.
This injury, like when it comes to timelines,
last year in the playoffs,
there were questions.
Would he play?
Wouldn't he play?
Would he play?
Wouldn't he play?
Everyone kept on telling me,
no one knew.
No one knew.
Like still, I have people telling me
who believe that if they would have
beaten Edmonton in game seven, he could have played the next round. I have people telling me who say is who believe that if they would have beaten edmonton in game seven he
could have played the next round i have people telling me there was no way he was going to play
the next round but i i believe the best intel was nobody knew and right now we're still in the same
place the best piece of information i've been given is quite simply he's gonna have to learn to play with this
like it's not something that can be fixed with surgery but it's something he's gonna learn to
have to play through and he can play through to a high level and so we just got to see what the
schedule is right now I don't know that he's going to be ready for the start of the season, but what I don't get
the sense is that the Canucks are worry is
going to be out for half the year.
So it's a mystery.
And, uh, Ian McIntyre tried to get some
information out of Jim Rutherford and had no
success because Jim Rutherford, uh, likes to
talk, but he doesn't like to talk about injuries.
This is such a curious story.
It really is.
And they haven't taken their medicals yet, as Jim Rutherford pointed out.
So everyone still could be okay.
Maybe he's perfect.
Yeah, who knows?
We'll let medicine decide that.
That is interesting, though, that Frege suggested that this is an injury
or a situation almost that he might just have to get used to?
This is an injury that from the moment that it happened
has not followed any course of action that we're used to.
Very unconventional in terms of the way it was reported,
in terms of the way it was handled.
It was like, well, is it severe enough
to knock him out of the playoffs
or is he coming back for the playoffs?
Is he out for the year or is he going to play in game seven?
Like what's going on?
Right.
Then the summer happened.
Will he never play hockey again
or is he actually going to play game one
of the third round?
Exactly.
If they win, then what?
And then the summer happened
and everyone just assumed
that everything would be okay.
And then Frank had that report
that said he talked to a doctor
who said you could be practicing for 50 years
and not see an injury of this nature. It's very bizarre so give the 32 thoughts podcast uh a listen um and you can i think
the part about the connect starts at around two hours and eight minutes something like that that's
what it's listed at but it's actually about two hours 11 okay so thank you skip ahead um and uh So. Thank you, Jim. Skip ahead. Um, and, uh, Fridge also goes in and talks
about a little bit about Thatcher Demko, how
his day to day might be different now without
Ian Clark, where he might do fewer of the
drills.
Right.
That Ian Clark wanted him to do on a daily
basis or, you know, regularly.
Um, and perhaps that might explain a little bit about some of the reasons
for Ian Clark no longer having the role that he did
with the Vancouver Canucks.
Give it a listen, though.
Give us a moo cow.
Well, I learned yesterday the worst soccer team in the world got a win.
Congratulations to San Marino,
the worst and lowest ranked FIFA team in the world.
After 20 years of either losing or drawing matches,
most of them losses,
San Marino beat Liechtenstein one nil yesterday for their first
win since 2004 if there's anything that we can appreciate here on the halford and brough show
it's a lovable loser sometimes not even lovable just losers right we know a lot about losing
the team that we follow quite famously it's never won a stanley cup so we can really you know feel what san marino
has gone through over the last um several years a series of losses the victory against lichtenstein
pushes their all-time record to two wins 10 draws and 199 losses. And they're always part of Euro qualifying, right?
They get to go, they get to show up,
and then they get resoundingly destroyed.
What's the population of the country?
Like 30,000 or something like that?
33,000.
Okay.
It's a micro state, right?
So it's basically Italy.
Like if we're just going to put this in layman's terms,
it's surrounded by Italy, but it's a micro state an enclave if you will of 33 000
people but like they speak italian if you look at the players on the roster it's all italian
surnames so uh it's just incredibly small but um it's kind of been a running gag what was the
twitter account you were referencing there was a a Twitter account days since San Marino
has last won, and they would get so hyped
about the draws, and sadly
that has now come to an end because they got a win!
Yeah, well, you should hear Lichtenstein
Sports Talk Radio this morning. They are not happy.
Also, do you want to know who San Marino's other win
was against? Lichtenstein. Yes.
That's correct. Fierce rivalry.
Moo Calmy.
Alright, do you have one? Chad? No, Chad's That's correct. Fierce rivalry. Moo cow me. All right.
Do you have one, Chad?
No, Chad's out for the last day.
A-Dog, I've never seen him looking more studious in my life.
A-Dog, this is going to be interesting.
A-Dog's going to go over all the winners,
and we have three winners to announce.
Two for Best Ask Us Anything with $100 gift cards to AJ's,
and also a What We Learn learned winner that's winning four
tickets to the Vancouver Canadiens playoff game.
And a dog is looking nervous about this announcement.
I'm just busy working.
Let's fire up the dog matrix.
We're going to give a dog some lead time here.
I'm ready.
I'm ready.
I'm ready.
Let's play the fire plan.
Oh my God.
We're having a fire plan.
Take it away, a dog.
What we learned.
I'm very frustrated right now.
No, it's fine.
Okay, so.
I'm sorry.
You're trying to pre-book your tickets to Beetlejuice 2.
Yeah, it keeps canceling on me.
A lot of Beetlejuice fans out there.
Okay, anyways.
One of the two winners for the $100 AJ's gift card is fish no longer on the island.
Hashtag what we learned pizza emoji.
I learned that Halford and Brough have a uniquely intimate relationship with their fans.
You read this one.
I fought my way back with Lionsgate.
Heard a three-foot hot dog comment.
I immediately and audibly proclaimed lady and the tramp.
Anyways, I'd love to lady and the tramp.
Some AJ's pizza with my best friend coming out from Calgary next week.
Fish. That's not angary next week. Fish.
That's not an ask us anything.
Fish.
We're just going to give it to him.
Fish.
He changed it in his second one.
Fish, you have to take picture or video evidence of you and your friend from Calgary lady
in the tramping some pizza.
That's a rule.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay.
Yep.
Good.
Next.
Second pizza winner.
We've already talked this one,
but it gave us a bunch of content.
So hence, if you provide us content,
you have a good chance of winning.
Patrick, the ice cream man,
ask us anything pizza emoji.
And it's a good morning fellas one about the poker game
where his friends were rattling off all these movies that they've seen
and he hadn't seen any of them and he felt ridiculous.
So Patrick wins one for that one.
It's a lengthy text.
I'm not going to read the whole thing, but congrats to Patrick.
And the winner of the Seas tickets is long-time listener,
but I believe first-time winner, Bill from Buffalo.
He said, what I learned, ticket emoji on X, in the past 24 hours
is that Jason is not a fan of sourdough Jack's burgers or Jack's sandwiches at a Jack in the Box restaurant.
I wonder if he ate there before his golf game or if he was simply sourpuss Jason after his game.
It was before and my front nine suffered as a result.
You didn't double fast food it, did you?
Did you get some more on the way back?
No, I thought about it.
Like mode style?
I thought about it.
And then I had a smoked meat back no i thought about it mode style and then i had a
smoked meat sandwich i thought about it once i got back into vancouver you know that uh you know
that stretch of fast food along marine drive between can be in maine there's a lot of them
it's a murderer's row i had to uh keep the car straight there's a that wendy's just she's
smiling i think there's two mcdonald's there is yeah it's uh there's a lot of yeah a lot of choices along that stretch yeah i may have been
at the wendy's last friday i know exactly which one you're talking about okay uh let's do some
more ask us anythings and what we learns ask us anything wow how would an all Canucks line of Dakota Joshua, JT Miller, and
Connor Garland fare in a third
or fourth line role for Team USA
at the Four Nations Faceoff?
I like the moxie. I like the gusto.
There's no chance that Dakota
Joshua or Connor Garland are making that team.
I'm not even sure JT Miller is going to make that team.
Can we just put that? I know he should.
I know he should.
He's making the team remember when we
talked to him about it he wasn't excited do you remember how unenthused he was about international
competition yeah it took me by surprise it took me by surprise too i was like how are you not
thinking about this i wonder if he just might be like i'm fine i'll take the vacation that's kind
of his personality though isn't it no he's gonna play you sure he's not gonna say no to play. You sure? He's not going to say no to playing. Hockey players don't do that.
Some of them do.
Who?
I don't know.
The jerk ones?
Who has ever said, no, I'm not going to play for Canada or the United States,
unless it's like Brett Hall who was, I will never play for Canada
and went and played for the United States.
You see, you need to Google it.
You don't know it off the top of your head.
I'm going to see if
anyone turned down the
World Cup of Hockey in
2016.
Well, I mean, that
doesn't even count
because that was a
garbage tournament.
Well, four nations
faced off.
Who knows how it's
going to turn out.
Okay.
I don't think you're
going to find anything.
It's an honor to play
for your country and
these guys have been
wanting to play for
their countries for a
long, long time.
And this is the opportunity.
I think I'd be shocked if JT Miller is not on
that team.
He should be on the team.
Melissa in a helicopter, ask us anything.
What's the longest you've ever lost something
and then found it again.
I left some nice headphones on a flight once
and I reported that I'd lost them to the flight. left some nice headphones on a flight once and
I reported that I'd lost them to the flight.
There was like a lost and found, but I was
like, I'm not getting this back.
Those are gone.
Yeah.
They showed up at my doorstep over a year
later.
Really?
And I sometimes wonder what those headphones
have seen.
What kind of life did you lead out there?
Where they've been in the world.
Did they go backpacking around Europe?
Who sent them to you?
The airline?
The airline, yeah.
After a year?
Well over a year.
They just showed up.
That's amazing.
Oh, yeah.
Those headphones that I left on the flight.
That's pretty cool, right?
This is an anecdotal one.
A friend of mine, he and his family went to europe
last summer and their luggage got lost at the start of a three-week european vacation
so he was that's a tough one he was without everything and all the pictures are him wearing
the one set of clothes that he bought well the worst is if you have to go to a wedding or something
thankfully he didn't have to but But anyway, they got back.
The clothes and the suitcases didn't arrive for another month after that.
So he was seven weeks.
And like you pack your staples, your signature.
Those are things that you wear on a regular basis. My sister had all her stuff stolen in South Africa.
Oh, that's brutal.
So gone, never came back.
And she's like, where are the hot shots, hot shops in Johannesburg?
That's a tough situation.
No, could you imagine?
It was hilarious.
Getting stuff stolen in South Africa.
I actually can't imagine that.
He bought what can only be described as like burlap pants.
I saw the pictures and I'm like, why did you choose those?
He's like, they were the only thing that was open.
They had a drawstring and they were like itchy.
And I'm like, is that burlap?
He's like, no, it was some other fabric,
but it wasn't far removed from burlap.
Do you remember Dave Lozo's shoes that he bought?
Yeah, that was a great shoes.
So Dave Lozo is a reporter that used to work for NHL.com.
Very, very funny guy.
Ended up being a writer on Katie Nolan's show.
Anyway, go on.
Right.
How did he lose his shoes or did he forget his shoes or something
forgot his shoes and just running shoes yeah and he went to a store and bought what could only be
described as george costanza's shoes yeah costanza cosplay shoes like they were they had no laces
whatsoever not a lace to be seen and the sole was about seven inches of foam right and i was looking
at him like like dave why are you doing this to yourself?
He was like, what?
These are nice.
Yeah.
And they were cheap.
He didn't want to spend a lot of money.
And he wore them, I'd say proudly.
Proudly.
Proudly.
The entire Stanley Cup final.
I bet everyone listening right now has a buddy, a friend, or maybe a family member that just
has zero fashion sense.
Yep.
None.
Old burlap pants.
And every once in a while they'll come out with an outfit that just kind of shocks you.
Do you play golf with any guys that get elaborate?
Do you?
Scotty, if you're listening right now, man, so much neon.
Oh.
So much.
It's going that way.
Yeah.
He doesn't wear like the knickers or anything.
No,
he just,
he sees a shirt and he's like,
that's loud.
Yeah.
That's mine.
Okay.
Yeah.
You can see him from a mile away.
Um,
it's actually more obnoxious than playing loud music on the course.
Um,
so,
you know,
you've seen Jason day recently with his fits.
Yeah.
That's a weird thing that he's got going on.
That's a local company that's out there.
Oh, really? It's very loose-fitting clothes.
Yeah. I think it's called Malden, M-A-L-D-O-N.
I'll have to double-check on that one, but they're from Victoria.
But the fit has now become really cool.
Well, Slim Fit is out.
Right. He's in, and Jason Day has really embraced it.
Colin in Tawasin ask us anything. I had a record
handshake slash fist
bumping mix up yesterday
like 10 straight with one guy
where we kept putting out the opposite
greeting. That's so bad. If you
could reshape the human greeting
what would you
make it? So first off this is a
great ask us anything french kiss
that would be
come here come here give me a big tonguey kiss uh i didn't expect that answer but that's a good one
herd immunity you know we'll break down walls and
barriers with with that um go back to the original handshake i get the bro handshake on the golf
course sometimes after rounds all the pga tour guys do it and i think we were trying to figure
out what that's called everyone knows what like the bro handshake is right so we discussed this
that's a tough one like that flares up my tennis elbow. Yeah. I think we narrowed it down at the break.
And courtesy of 23-year-old Chad, we were able to tap into the youths on this one.
The dap is what you're talking about.
I think it's just the bro handshake.
I think there's more to getting dapped up than just the bro handshake.
Now, the bro handshake also includes the shug.
I am so out of my...
Which is the one-handed arm around the back bro bro hug
shug with the handshake shug okay so there's that um i but if you see the pga tour guys after the
rounds are over yeah it's always it's never the traditional i used to meet you nice playing you
know like and i that's that's what i comfortable with. It's crazy that the pandemic has forever altered just regular old handshakes.
Do you know how many times I've gone ball and socket with someone?
It is so awkward when they shake your fist.
I like a good fist pound.
No.
I don't like it.
Why?
Impersonal?
There's something worse than an awkward handshake that
doesn't quite i find the the fist bump almost dismissive like you just you flick them off
that's why bruh likes it so much yep what was that i find the it's almost like a second part
flick off dismissive flick off right um i wish i contacted fine you know like a good old-fashioned handshake like
hank hill or maybe if you fist pound but you hold the fists together for a little while
that's not awkward at all so your knuckles align oh we found a groove i like to do a handshake and
just hold the hand for about 30 seconds i've been in one of those before and just like lock eyes the
entire time yeah because it used to mean you used to be able to tell the worth of a man by the strength
of his handshake.
Exactly.
You can't do that with a fist pound.
Yeah.
You can do it with a French kiss.
By the strength of his tongue.
You've got a firm tongue.
That was great.
Damn.
Or it's awkward.
It's kind of a weak tongue.
Yeah.
It dominated it. Did he leave it in there long for you too too long jason with an ask us anything what's a bigger indicator that fall is here
nfl kickoff or a 15 minute segment about daniel sprung yeah we spent some time on daniel sprung
uh go back and download our one of the podcast if you like a
thorough breakdown of daniel sprung and then like three and a half minutes on the rematch of the
afc championship between the chiefs and the ravens i mean we did talk about it at length
we did but i mean they're okay first off the reason we talked about sprung is because sprung
and heinen among others were guys that were at the informal skate yesterday
and produced our first batch of canucks audio for the year that's always exciting for us we love
canucks audio and then the sprung thing it is really interesting because you're not so much
talking about that particular guy you're talking about the concept of finding someone on the cheap
for this team that needs if you look at his point production and goal production it could be a great
bargain but then you always have to ask the question,
why is this guy bounced around so much?
Why does he typically only play 11 minutes a night?
And if you look at the advanced analytics
and sometimes you can sort by goals per 60,
that's something I know you do every night.
You go to all the advanced analytics sites
and you just go through them
and you're just trying to find diamonds in the rough.
That's one of your hobbies, right?
You and Drance do that.
I love finding diamonds in the rough.
Loves analytics.
But it's always like Daniel Sprung is way up there
because he actually gets a lot of points,
but he doesn't play much.
So why doesn't he play much?
Why has he bounced around?
If you look at his production in Seattle,
pretty good. And that was the year they went to the playoffs and played 10 playoff games but then he ends up in detroit
doesn't get a huge contract and then he has an okay year in detroit if you could just go
look at the point totals not signed until late in july you know what i would liken them to um
and it's not really relevant now because everyone, but remember the specialty three-point shooters back in the day, right?
They'd come in and like Kyle Korver,
he could always find a spot on an NBA team
because he could hit threes at a better rate than everyone else.
But couldn't defend?
Yeah, wasn't going to rebound, wasn't going to drive.
Almost all of his shots were exclusively three-pointers,
but he's really good at it.
Carved out a long career because of it.
Here's one from Jeff in Burnaby.
Ask us anything. It's also a
would-you-drather. Would you drather
be the best football player in your position,
never win a Super Bowl, or
considered the worst one to win one?
So his example would be Dan Marino
or Trent Dilfer. Dan Marino.
That's a tough one for me because I always
think how awesome
it would be to win a championship.
My gut instinct says Dan Marino, but when I think about it the way you're talking about it,
the one thing that probably haunts Dan Marino, aside from the laces out.
Who is more bothered, Trent Dilfer by being known as the worst quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl. Yeah.
Or Dan Marino, known as being the best quarterback to never win the Super Bowl.
Now, the thing with Halford is he's always like, who has more money?
Yeah.
And it would be- Dan Marino.
Yeah.
Does he still have that glove money?
Yes.
Yeah.
I don't know how much he made for-
Isotoners.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know how much he made for- Whaters yeah yeah i don't know how much he made
for uh what was the movie oh uh ace ventura pet ace ventura laces out there um yeah that's a great
point who would be more bothered by it that's a great question so i watched the shockingly
another sports documentary i watched the baltimore ravens 30 for 30 on that one year where they had
the devastating defense and then also Trent Dilfer
there's still an undertone of disrespect from everyone that talks about that team about Trent
Dilfer yeah and I actually forgot how quickly they were ready to move on from him after he won a
Super Bowl they were like okay that was fun but we can't go through that again who's the other guy
Brad Johnson to win a Super Bowl did he win win one? Yeah, he won Tampa Bay.
He would be it.
It's not a super long list.
Those two always top it.
Yeah, it's always funny.
It's like Trent Dilfer, like,
yeah, me and Aaron Rodgers were basically the same player.
Won Super Bowl.
Nick Foles.
He's on that list, too.
Yeah.
He played so well, though.
And he played amazing in the Super Bowl.
He played so well, though.
That was the difference.
It was like, who is this guy?
This is incredible.
Just making all kinds of throws, and you're like,
that's the same Nick Foles.
Yeah, it's quite remarkable.
Want to do one more before we go for the weekend?
Sure.
Okay.
Do one.
Oh, fuck, you had it.
Now do the thing.
All right, here it is.
Who let the Chiefs draft the fastest player in NFL history?
Oh, wait.
We know who.
It was the Buffalo Bills.
It was the Buffalo Bills.
So who is this guy?
Xavier Worthy.
Fastest 40-yard dash ever at the combine, 4.21.
And the reason that the Bills allowed the Chiefs,
there was a trade at the draft.
The Bills had the 28th overall pick, traded to Kansas City.
Kansas City drafts Xavier Worthy.
They moved up from 32 to 28 or something like that.
And he scored two touchdowns last night and looked just as fast as everyone expected him to be. to Kansas City. Kansas City drafts Xavier Worthy. They moved up from 32 to 28 or something like that. He scored,
and he scored two touchdowns last night and looked
just as fast as everyone
expected him to be.
So he's the new Tyreek Hill
essentially?
Is that what they're saying?
Yeah, I mean,
he's got a long way to go.
Well, I know that,
but he scored on a run.
Yeah.
But he's a receiver?
And he's a receiver, yeah.
And he is lightning fast.
I've got him in fantasy.
He got me some points last night.
So do I.
You know who didn't?
Travis Kelsey. Not happy with Travis Kelsey points last night. So do I. You know who didn't? Travis Kelsey.
Not happy with Travis Kelsey's performance yesterday.
Wasn't great.
Taylor Swift was happier.
You see her?
She seems happy.
I can't wait till they get married.
I love Donna.
Great football mom.
It's been a fun show.
Thank you all for listening and congrats to all our winners.
Go to AJ's on Sunday for some beer and some pizza and some football.
Three things that they really go together on a Sunday.
For now, though, we got to get out of here.
Thanks for listening.
Chad, good work this week, buddy.
Loved having you aboard.
Yeah, fun being here.
Yep.
Signing off, I have been Mike Alford.
He's been Jason Brough.
He's been A-Dog.
He's been Chad.
This has been the Alford and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
