Starting point is 00:00:00 702 on a fiesta friday here on the halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Happy Friday, everybody. Sweet, sweet Friday. What a weekend we got in sports. I'm so fired up. World Series. Tons of hockey games. Bunch of football on Sunday. Whitecaps playoff on Sunday night.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Unexpected trip down to LAFC. Got to say that. Did you see the map of LA for this week? There's a lot going on. There's a lot going on in a small area. I'm very excited about it. Tonight's going to LAFC. Got to say that. Did you see the map of LA for this week? There's a lot going on. There's a lot going on in a small area. I'm very excited about it. Tonight's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:00:50 I'm very excited about game one of the World Series. Only, and not only because, but in addition to marquee matchup, I can't remember the last time we had the two teams
Starting point is 00:01:00 with the best team in the record-wise American League, best team record-wise National League meeting in the World Series. But I think that game one, especially with Fernando Valenzuela's very tragic and unfortunate passing and all the history and all the nostalgia,
Starting point is 00:01:13 I think it's going to be this real great spectacle tonight. I think it's going to be great for television as well. Yankees in another World Series. Boring. And there's Greg. There's Laddy, everybody. Laddy has announced his presence. Not boring at all. Sorry, buddy. Sorry, buddy. Okay, before we get to AJ, who's very excited about tonight as well,
Starting point is 00:01:29 and needs to take care of some business, Halford and Breath of the Morning is brought to you by Vancouver Honda, Vancouver's premier destination for Honda customers. They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can help with anything you're looking for, sales, financing, service, or parts. Hour two of this program is brought to you by Jason Hominuk from Jason.Mortgage. If you love giving the banks more of your money, then don't let Jason shop around
Starting point is 00:01:48 to find the perfect mortgage for you. That's Jason.Mortgage. Yes. Sounds like a question. Said the name Jason, so I'm pointing at you. We are coming to you live from the Kintec studio. Kintec, Canada's favorite orthotics provider, powered by thousands of five-star Google reviews.
Starting point is 00:02:03 What are you waiting for? Kintec. Our next guest is a huge Yankees fan, the purveyor of a perfect place to go tonight to watch the game and the presenting sponsor of what we learned here on the Halford & Brough Show. It's AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway. He joins us now on Halford & Brough. What up, AJ? How are you, bud? What is going on?
Starting point is 00:02:21 You know, I don't know. I've been up since 4 pacing. AJ texted me on Thursday, and it was like, it's been a long wait. I'm like, brother, the game's not for another 36 hours. Like, you still have a ways to go. But I'm glad that you're excited. Do you guys think Dave Roberts might be lying when he says Otani's not going to pitch? Like, is there any chance that he's like,
Starting point is 00:02:45 because he like brushed it off so quickly yesterday when asked. I was kind of like, maybe he's keeping that up his sleeve. I mean, that was- Is he a liar? I think Dave Roberts is actually a really nice man. But yeah, I mean, that would be crazy. That would be to throw that in, to throw that in now. Can you imagine game seven?
Starting point is 00:03:04 Crazy, but also awesome. So incredible, right? If we could get, I know Dave Roberts said that, but I know that also everyone is being like, maybe he's lying. I hope he's lying.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Right? Yeah. Like that would be, that would be crazy. It would be, it would be awesome for the game. If we had a moment, like a one game,
Starting point is 00:03:20 seven game, a game seven final at bat, like when we had the world baseball classic, when he went up there against Trout. That would be... You'd have to at least consider it. And the drama. Did you guys get your home run off of him?
Starting point is 00:03:31 Yeah, him against Aaron Judge would be amazing. This is going to decide the series. Let's take it home. It would be great. Okay, so this weekend at AJ's, the place to be. Baseball, two nights. Oh my God, I'm trying to run through everything.
Starting point is 00:03:43 If you go tomorrow night, $6 pints, because it's the Canucks game on, so $6 pints of Pilsner. Sunday, all-day happy hour. You can watch football all day, and then you can watch the Whitecaps at night. Am I missing anything here, AJ? Well, we busted out a new menu,
Starting point is 00:03:57 so come and check that out, too. Little meatball sliders on there. So, yeah, a couple wrinkles. Beautiful. A couple wrinkles, plus, yeah, what a weekend in sport. It's going to be awesome. Go check it out. It's AJ's Pizza on East Broadway. AJ, enjoy the weekend, bud. Good luck tonight.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Thank you. Thank you. Everybody have a great weekend. Yeah, you too. Thanks. That's AJ's Pizza on East Broadway. The best pizza place in the world. New menu. Lots of specials on this weekend, so go check them out. And a reminder that the best Ask Us Anything or What We Learned today on the halford
Starting point is 00:04:25 and brough show on sportsnet 650 is going to get a 100 gift card to aj i hope aj has a great week everything in his personal life is fine and his his pizza shop is great i just hope his sports viewing life is terrible he has an awful he's really did you notice how him and i were talking over each other constantly during that hit it's because we're both so excited and we don't know how to like contain ourselves. This is great. I'm very much looking forward to this. I'm also looking forward to the Canucks and Penguins on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:04:52 And now to preview the Pittsburgh Penguins side of things, Sean Gentile from The Athletic in Pittsburgh. Gentile, how are you doing, buddy? Good, bud. First talk of the regular season. How are we? we're doing well a lot of elias petterson talk in vancouver probably a lot of marcus petterson talk in pittsburgh huh i was gonna say like do we do we need to have that conversation now like is there going to be is there going to be a market a marcus petterson move that involves both of these teams.
Starting point is 00:05:28 What is the story in Pittsburgh these days? How are fans feeling about this team? I know Geno got off to a good start offensively, but I don't know. Is this team a playoff team? I don't think so. I didn't think they were at the start of the season either. I mean, they don't think so. I didn't think they were at the start of the season either. I mean, they don't look terrible, whatever, three and four or whatever they are.
Starting point is 00:06:07 And the top six. You guys get it. It's a tougher ask every year. Those guys get older, but they don't rely on them any less. It's a tough ask. What is the situation with Tristan Jerry right now? I know that he got sent back to Pittsburgh, which, look, sending someone home to work on their game,
Starting point is 00:06:32 especially in the goaltending sphere, isn't all that uncommon. But it's smack in the middle of a Western road trip. It's before he has his sort of homecoming game, which would have been on Saturday, in Vancouver. And I think the key to all of this is it's really early in the season. Like, you thought he could have worked on this, you know, in training camp in the preseason with the goalie coach. So how many red flags, what's the level of concern?
Starting point is 00:06:54 And the entire story with Jari as he's been sent home from this road swing. I thought Sullivan did a – he was very diplomatic and, you know, measured with the stuff he said yesterday after we found out that Jari got sent back here. So everybody's saying all the right things. But, man, I think it's clear that he was on a pretty short leash at the start of the season, regardless of how he played. I don't know that it was going to take too many bad or mediocre outings
Starting point is 00:07:24 for him to get the hook. And then he came out and was just, you know, as bad as we've ever seen him, like unplayably bad. And his first few starts got benched relatively early for Yoel Blomqvist, who's, you know, it was his first NHL game, right? So the fact that they did that, that they went to, you know, a prospect basically in game three of the season,
Starting point is 00:07:51 I think that kind of signaled that, you know, that the rope wasn't going to be all that long and that there wasn't going to be a ton of patience for him. So they like Blomqvist a lot. They like Alex Delkovich a lot. Obviously, they signed him to a multi-year extension as a backup over the summer. And I think all that stuff, man, those are the signals that, you know, they're about out of patience with him.
Starting point is 00:08:14 And the stuff that's happened over the last few days, you know, getting sent back, like you guys said, I think that's just more proof of the same. So my question about the Penguins is the same as it's been for the last year, I think. How is Kyle Dubas going to do this? How is he going to turn this team as it's currently constructed into a playoff team or a cup contender, if you're getting really greedy, while Sid is still there because to me it seems like Mission Impossible I don't know if I'm with you on Mission Impossible
Starting point is 00:08:54 bruv but like I'm pretty I'm pretty close like this is this is this is tough a lot of it has to do with the contracts that are that are are still on the books. Like you can't really, you can't be paying Ricard Raquel five and a half million dollars in 2025 and expect to have enough bill left over to like make meaningful improvements. Right. Like it's, it's stuff like that. And some of them,
Starting point is 00:09:21 some of them are, you know, are ones that Dubas is responsible for. He signed Tristan Jari. He signed Ryan Graves. Raquel, guys like that were holdovers. But there's a lot of money that's tied up in mediocre players. And I think that's the single biggest obstacle for them.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Aside from Sid being 37 and 38 like those are those are obviously enormous problems but the path for improvement is just really tough to see and i think a lot of it comes from the fact that they have you know 10 million 15 million 18 million dollars where you're like that man you could spend it better on pretty much on pretty much anything so i think the hope needs to be that, you know, this season that a guy like Raquel heats up and gives them something and makes himself tradable in the offseason. Like, I think that's the sort of thing that they're stuck hoping for,
Starting point is 00:10:18 because it really is tough to see, you know, where the path to meaningful improvement is, other than just hoping, you know, where the path to meaningful improvement is, other than just hoping, you know, the 37-year-old Hall of Famer doesn't lose a step and that Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist, you know, give high-end starting goaltending. And that's, like, neither of those are great bets, right? And I think that's what they're kind of stuck doing for the time being.
Starting point is 00:10:43 We're speaking to Sean Gentile from The Athletic in Pittsburgh here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. The Penguins, of course, play tonight in Edmonton and then tomorrow right here in Vancouver. We'll also get a look on Saturday at Eric Carlson, who is in year two as a Pittsburgh Penguin. He's actually been pretty good on the power play, and the Penguins' power play, which was wretched last year,
Starting point is 00:11:03 has actually been a lot better. But there's been a couple people pointing out that it's not all roses for carlson uh it's a ton of giveaways through the first eight games of the year eric carlson no could you imagine in this day it's crazy man so solid defensively yeah and i just wonder if it's a combination of he didn't really have much of a training camp or preseason to keep changing out his defensive partners and it's also eric carlson does he get leaned on a lot given where he is in his career and is that maybe part of the reason why the penguins are allowing all these goals definitely has a lot to do with it and yeah man like he's a guy in his 30s on the
Starting point is 00:11:41 penguins and which means that he plays way more than he should. He's not that much different than Crosby and Malkin and Chris. These guys play too much because it's not just that they're old and they're their best players. It's like they don't have too many good players outside of those guys. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:11:59 There's a gap between the old guys and the rest of everybody else. And that is and was, you know, their single biggest problem. But, yeah, as far as Carlson's concerned, it's more of the same. I think he generally looks like the guy we saw last year, which is, you know, pretty good, but not a guy you want to pay $11 million. And, you know, it's the Eric Carlson experience
Starting point is 00:12:24 where he does one or two things every game where you're like, man, there's two other dudes in the league that can do that. And then there's some kind of wild head-scratcher, you know, mess of a move that doesn't pay off. But yeah, where things have changed for him, honestly, are on the
Starting point is 00:12:39 power play. Like, that unit does look better. It was catastrophically bad last year. and they went a month basically without without scoring a goal like around the holidays and whenever you're talking about a team that you know finished three points out of a playoff spot or whatever it was like you can pretty convincingly argue that the power play and meltdown in the middle of the year when they couldn't score and we're losing a ton of games basically cost them a playoff spot last year so it looks better they're generating more chances Carlson
Starting point is 00:13:08 definitely looks like more of a fit with uh with Sid and with Malkin but you know there's been some there's been issues elsewhere obviously you know when Sid signed his extension and he said that winning is my priority um Do you think, you know what I'm going to ask here, do you think that was really it or do you think he just wants to remain a penguin for life? Like we saw that with the Sedins
Starting point is 00:13:33 here in Vancouver. Do you think Sid just doesn't want to go to another team? He likes the guys that he's playing with and he likes the idea of only playing for one team in his career? Yeah, absolutely. I think that's important to him.
Starting point is 00:13:46 I don't, I mean, that's not, that's not a guess either. Like, I think when you look at who is, like, who is his favorite player growing up? Steve Iserman. Who is the guy whose house he lived in at the start of his career? Mario Lemieux. Those are guys who, part of legacy uh was spending their entire career with one team and that's a priority for him and it definitely always has been like I don't think he would still I don't think he would assign that extension if he thought the situation was hopeless
Starting point is 00:14:19 or that there was no way that you know he was going to play meaningful hockey for the next three years of his career. Like I do, I believe that he believes that, but I think it's also, you know, I think he's trying to have it both ways and I don't want to blame him. He deserves it. Like I'd, I'd want to play where I want to play and also hope everything works out too. If I were him, but you know, if, if, if he's being honest, if anybody's being honest about this team, you know if he's being honest if anybody's being honest about this team
Starting point is 00:14:46 it's not close to a cup contender right and I think maybe there's some recalibration of expectations and maybe some convincing of one's self that's gone on there on that end of things for sure Is there still interest in the team like are they
Starting point is 00:15:04 still selling out the arena and everything I mean i i imagine a lot of bringing back crosby too was about ticket sales and and and you know star power that they still have and there's obviously never not going to be love for sydney crosby and if jenny malkin and chris letang and pittsburgh no i you're you're right about that and the interest is absolutely still there but it's also october and sydney crosby and evgeny malkin and chris letang are still on the team right like at some point those guys are going to be gone and i think that's when the test when the test really starts like if this in three or four years is a mediocre team without any real franchise players on it in there,
Starting point is 00:15:48 you know, the 11th best team in the Eastern conference or whatever, I'll be very interested to see what, you know, Tuesday night games against the devils look like in February or, or, or whatever. It's going to be interesting.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Well, it's Russell Wilson's town now, right? Supposedly. I was so ready for that to blow up on the Steelers. It looked like it was going to. I was not prepared for how good he looked down the stretch there in that game.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I thought he was well and fully cooked and just going to be a sitting duck behind that offensive line. But I don't know, man. He looked like he had some life. All it takes is one moon ball, baby. You throw one 40-yard lob to George Pickett and all is forgiven.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Everyone's ready to plan the parade now. You know what? The real question I wanted to ask you is, is anyone even paying attention to the Penguins because the Steelers are having a good year? And then I watched Pitt beat the Living Daylights out of Syracuse yesterday, and I looked, and they're 7-0, and they're a top-20 team in the country.
Starting point is 00:16:56 So it's like football country. It's like, oh, yeah, we also have a hockey team. I was at the Pitt game in the stands. Like, I attended that as a fan. Oh, man. I had a great time. I always love rooting against Syracuse just because all the journals that come out of there, all the media people are so obnoxious about it.
Starting point is 00:17:15 So it was a thrilling experience for me to witness firsthand. But, yeah, I mean, there's always going to be interest in the Penguins, man. Well, yeah, I mean, there's, you know, it's, there's, there's always going to be interest in the Penguins, man. I, and I think in that last homestand too, you know, you had Malkin hit 500 and Crosby hit 1600 and on, on the, on the Malkin goal, they won on a Crosby goal in overtime. Like people, there was, there was like a palpable kind of warmth, I think surrounding, surrounding all those milestones. Like I, I think i think people did you know celebrate it in a bit and appreciate it and whether whether that's nostalgia or or whatever but i also think it was a reminder you know of how much people
Starting point is 00:17:57 around here do care about these guys and and have you know that like kind of the the the cred that they've built up over the course of their careers. That was a big deal. It was front page of the paper and the main topic on a lot of the talk shows. And the fact that that took attention away from dealers being in playoff position and quarterback drama and all that stuff, I think that's a pretty good sign because people didn't care. I don't think it would have had that reaction.
Starting point is 00:18:26 The Penguins are into their Werther's Originals years where there's just warmth around the team. And the memories and the milestones and all that. The Werther's leftover in Jim Rutherford's office. I think that's where they're getting them from. Sean, you're the best, buddy. Thanks for doing this today. We appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Enjoy the weekend. All right, boys. Talk soon. Talk soon. That's Sean Gentile from The Athletic in Pittsburgh here on the Halford & Ruff show on Sportsnet 650.
Starting point is 00:18:55 He was the one that coined that. Jim Rutherford and the Werthers. He just had additional Werthers. He'd give you one when you left. Okay. By the way, so we talked about how amazing sports are right now sports how good are they so good right now so saturday morning
Starting point is 00:19:11 i gotta wake up well not wake up i'll be awake but 9 a.m because i have to watch notre dame and navy because navy i don't know if you know army and navy or academy schools bro like they just this is the year navy six and oh they're 24th ranked and i was listening because i watched the first i don't know quarter of pit syracuse yesterday and they were talking about like probably like navy if they just keep doing this they're gonna they're gonna play their way into like championship contention can you imagine get into the playoff which i yes i can't imagine it because it would be hilarious right i i don't think it's i don't think it's gonna happen
Starting point is 00:19:51 right i i don't think it's gonna happen do you ever watch that army navy game yeah it's great i turn into an american for it i'm like i gotta sing like our forces are strong i got a single tear i'm saluting people i get really really into it. It's very emotional. But yeah, so there's that. And then if you're into the footy, Sunday morning, huge match. Liverpool-Arsenal. Liverpool got Chelsea last week and they got a huge top
Starting point is 00:20:16 of the table clash. So it's like everything in every league. It's like every league and every tournament and every championship is trying to get their piece of the pie and get their attention. There's just so much stuff to watch it's an amazing time of the year i just can't wait for the hockey on saturday night starting at four o'clock i mean there's some games there are games all day if you want to start if you want to watch hockey all day i think it starts at 10 a.m our time um leafs bruins i think there's going to be some juice to that in terms of
Starting point is 00:20:43 whoever loses the fans are going to be even more upset. I don't know who I'm cheering for in that one. Bruins. Probably the Bruins just because of my hot take around the Leafs. And then the Canucks and Penguins at 7 o'clock. There is going to be, you know, every time that Sid's in the building, you wonder how many more times Sid is going to come to Rogers Arena. I know A-Dog is going to be in press row, and he's never seen Sid live.
Starting point is 00:21:08 So you're excited to see that. And also just the Canucks, because they've had so many days off and things have happened, all eyes, if they weren't already, are going to be on Elias Pettersson on Saturday, and I imagine the broadcast is going to be hyper-focused on Petey in that game. You know what else we get on Saturday night, though, just to throw it out there? The Whitecaps, right?
Starting point is 00:21:32 No, no, no, that's Sunday night. Sorry, sorry. Jets and Flames, two of the best teams in Canada going toe-to-toe. You didn't sell me. Come on. You didn't sell me. Well, I don't care. I'm watching the Canucks and the Penguins.
Starting point is 00:21:42 This one is before that. Well, I'll be watching Leafs and Bruins. No, Jets, Flames. Be Canadian, bro'm not. I don't care. I'm watching the Canucks and the Penguins. This one is before that. Well, I'll be watching Leafs and Bruins. No. Jets, Flames. Be Canadian, bro. No. It's Ask Us Anything Friday on the Halford and Brough show. Sean from New West with an Ask Us Anything.
Starting point is 00:21:54 If you could drive any fictional vehicle from either TV or film, which vehicle would you drive? That is an obvious answer, and it would be Herbie. Right. That is a good choice. He's a good guy. He's a little naughty sometimes. He's a little naughty. He's like a puppy.
Starting point is 00:22:15 What about Ecto-1? That's a good one. Was it a hearse previously? It was an ambulance. Ambulance. Sorry. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Are you talking Ghostbusters right now? Yeah. Wow. I'm very excited. You don't sound excited. Ambulance. Sorry, okay, yeah. Are we talking Ghostbusters right now? Yeah. Wow. I'm very excited. You don't sound excited. You sound shocked. Do you know what the question is? Shock is the right word.
Starting point is 00:22:31 The question is, what fictional vehicle, either television or movie, would you most like to drive? The Batmobile? The 1989 Batman Batmobile. Wow, specific year and everything. Yeah, that specific. Why that one? Because it's so badass. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:22:44 One of my core memories. Is it better than Herbie, though? Ugh, bruf. Come on, man. One of my core, the least cool thing I could ever say. One of my core memories. Did you say Herbie wasn't cool? One of my core memories as a child.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Herbie didn't try to be cool like the Batmobile, right? He was just naturally, he had that indifference. Yeah. Anyways, moving past this quickly. One of my core memories as a child is seeing somebody drive a Batmobile down the street in Lynn Valley in North Vancouver. I guess they
Starting point is 00:23:13 were like a car collector and they made it themselves. I don't know how they got it. I didn't really care, to be honest with you. It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Maybe it was Batman. It could have been. But yes, that's the answer. Did you ask him about his superpowers? Oh no, I didn to the person i was way too i was just i couldn't believe what i'm seeing were you uh before people text in by the way that is one of halford's bits that you always ask what is batman's superhero or super superpower how do you get it yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:23:39 bit by a bat everyone knows this everyone knows that it's part of the whatever comic book and then adog dies a little inside. His superpowers, he's rich. Yeah. From the Archie universe, the comic book that he came from. Santa Riverdale. Also, no one has mentioned Kit yet. I said Kit.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Oh, did you? At the top, yeah. Here's a question. Do you know what Kit stands for? Yeah, I got the Wikipedia page. Oh, yeah, I do too. I didn't know that before. Knight Industries 2000.
Starting point is 00:24:03 K-I-T-T. Knight Industries 2000. All right.-T-T. Knight Industries 2000. All right. And then the later, I guess they made some movies later on. What are you so disappointed about? I'm looking at the original, it was the 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
Starting point is 00:24:15 The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was, was like, that was the car. Because that was the same car in Smokey and the Bandit too. A bunch of texters saying the DeLorean from Back to the car. Because that was the same car in Smokey and the Bandit, too. A bunch of texters saying the DeLorean from Back to the Future. It's got to be up there. I mean, having your own time machine would be pretty amazing. Did you say the Ghostbusters car?
Starting point is 00:24:33 Yeah. Yeah, we did. Is anyone listening to anyone on the show? Did anyone say the Batcar? What's the Batcar called again? The Batcar. The answer is Herbie. We're going to end this awful, bruh. The answer is Herbie. We're gonna end this
Starting point is 00:24:45 awful, awful segment. Awful? Look at all the text we got coming in. People are engaged, bruv. They wanna know. By the way, the rule on this, you can't say Lightning McQueen, because Lightning McQueen is, like, basically a human. Some people are saying Lightning McQueen. You can't say Lightning McQueen. Also, he's animated. That doesn't really count, right?
Starting point is 00:25:02 But he's got, like, he's a person. You can't say animated. Yeah, it's not animated. Animated is not an option. It's an actual vehicle, like Herbie. It's a fictional car. I can't say Optimus Prime then? No, Optimus Prime doesn't count. Also, if you were inside Optimus Prime when he changed,
Starting point is 00:25:17 I think that would probably kill you. I'm going to get inside Optimus Prime. It's like Barney at the bar when it changes. You know what car I drive? You know what car I drive? Christine From Stephen King It's an option I guess
Starting point is 00:25:33 If we're going to open it up it's an option You know what that car would toughen up Petey Get a car Buy Petey a car that Haunted car Trash talks Now it'sDA car that has haunted car. Trash talks. We tried everything. Now it's time to try the haunted car.
Starting point is 00:25:48 All right. Mo just coming up next. And then Dollywall. So if you think this show is off the rails now, just wait for the next hour and a half. You're listening to the Alfred and Bruff show on Sportsnet 650. Hey, it's Jamie Dodd. And Thomas Drance.

Starting point is 00:27:42 Good morning, Moj. How are you? Good morning, gentlemen. Doing well. Let's start with the Lions. Now, they don't play this week, but they are going to find out on Saturday, either Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening,
Starting point is 00:27:56 where they're going for the West semifinal. Let's start with the most important thing, where you want to go. That's all that matters here. Have you had your choice? Do you want to go to Winnipeg? Do you want to go to Regina? You know, I don't think I'd ever hear myself say this, but I want to go to Winnipeg.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Moj! What's going on? I know. It's just crazy, isn't it? Well, think about it. Winnipeg is, to quote John Shorthouse, the dragon that you've got to slay, right? I mean, you've got to go through Winnipeg no matter what.
Starting point is 00:28:24 So why not just go there first get it done hopefully and now you're going if you win that game you're going into regina you're going to regina with a lot of confidence having beat winnipeg at princess auto stadium the other thing too is if you're going into winnipeg for the semi-final that means they've lost two games in a row that means they probably have that little voice in their head that you know all of a sudden they don't think they're. That means they probably have that little voice in their head that, you know, all of a sudden they don't think they're this superpower. Instead, they might have some questions about their ability. So, to me, it's just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:55 I just think you're going to have to go through Winnipeg, so why not just go through Winnipeg right off the get-go? What do you think of the Lions, not necessarily chances, but the vibe that they're going into this game with? Because even though it was a very tumultuous season and they finished as a 500 football team, they did get a couple things. They ticked a couple boxes in that final game against Montreal. They got Vernon Adams to start. He played well.
Starting point is 00:29:15 The numbers looked good. And the quotes that came out afterwards, like Bruff read a couple of them on the air and I read a couple as well. It sure seemed as though a lot of the guys on the team were happy and looking forward to the future because it was VA's team again. Is this a fair assessment that I've got here or am I way off? No, I think it's
Starting point is 00:29:32 a fair assessment. You've got to realize Vernon put in a lot of work with these guys in the offseason. So for Vernon to come back and have success, of course these guys are going to be happy that Vernon had this success, especially when he was that guy that he was a team guy. He didn't see anything
Starting point is 00:29:48 negative when Nathan Rourke took over. Just kind of bided his time and waited for his opportunity. But it's going to be a different test, though. When I look at the offense going up against Montreal, their defensive coordinator, Noel Thorpe, he was running a lot of blitzes. He was running a lot of cover zero.
Starting point is 00:30:04 And the Lions exploited that. You're not going to get that from Saskatchewan or Winnipeg. It's going to be a different test. And I talked to a couple of guys about, you know, the differences in the defense. And every defense has a weakness. No matter what defense you call, there is a weakness to that defense. It's just inherent in the game of football. And I said, so where's the weakness when you go up against a defense like Winnipeg or Saskatchewan, where they only like to rush three or four, then drop everybody else
Starting point is 00:30:28 back in coverage. And they just said, well, number one, the short passing game and number two, the running game. And I think that's what is kind of like, I don't know if it's an X factor. I think it's a big factor is that this time around they have William Stanback and Stanback to me, I love the way he runs. I've called him a violent runner. He's a guy that, you know, there's contact maybe two yards at the line of scrimmage, and he's going to find a way to get four, five, or six yards out of the play. So he, to me, is going to be a huge key. They've got to be able to run the ball against Winnipeg or Saskatchewan, and then they have to stay committed to it. So Moj, we got to ask one of the few witnesses of the scuffle what he saw between uh miller and pd everyone's talking about it everyone has a theory what's yours so i mean they were kind of
Starting point is 00:31:15 skating towards the blue line and miller kind of had his back towards the blue line and pedersen was skating towards the blue line facing it. And there was a couple of slashes and then there was a cross check and another cross check. And then, of course, Miller blurted out his comment that's been, I guess, repeated over and well documented by now. You know, that's interesting. When you have a team, I mean, you've seen this in football especially because you have way more numbers not everyone's going to get along right and not everyone is going to be hanging out
Starting point is 00:31:51 after the game going out for dinner whatever um i think i don't even know if you have to respect the person right but you have to find a way to you know just get along with that person so to speak so when i look at that relationship and you know things that you've heard over the years that you know they're not the best of buds i mean okay fine and dandy but i don't know just the way that miller talked to him it's just kind of i don't know i just i just kind of look at it and go hmm interesting right it wasn't like your usual exchange it was kind of a disrespectful exchange if you know what i'm saying yeah like there was some actual heat to it yeah and that's what jeff patterson tweeted jeff was right in front of me when this all occurred right
Starting point is 00:32:36 so like i said it wasn't like it wasn't a physical thing it was just more that what was said so i don't know it's you know we don't know You don't know unless you're in the room, unless you're around the team, you know, what type of relationship these guys have. But, you know, just what we saw from that situation, from that little, you know, incident, it just doesn't seem like they're, quote, the type of guys that are going to be hanging out with one another on the road. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:00 Halford and I don't like each other. We don't respect each other either. Yeah, you guys don't hang out with one another on the road. It's perfectly fine. Yeah. The respect part is the important part because we don't respect each other at all. Yeah. So that's important.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Of course, we don't have a good program either. So I don't know. Bad culture too, boss. A-Dog runs the show. So, Moj, I imagine this Saturday night at Rogers Arena, all eyes are going to be on Petey to see how he responds. What do you think that's going to be like? Because there's always going to be a tension when Sidney Crosby's in town.
Starting point is 00:33:32 And you know here in Vancouver, the hard thing for the Canucks is they're always held up against Sidney Crosby because you've got the Pittsburgh contingent in management, Rick Tockett, obviously coached Sidney Crosby, at least as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh, saw his practice habits. You hear it all the time. He has compared Quinn Hughes favorably to Sidney Crosby, and he has said that he wants Petey to be more like Sidney Crosby. So there's going to be a lot of eyes on Petey.
Starting point is 00:34:04 How do you think he's going to respond? Well, I hope he responds with a good game. But here's the thing that's interesting. And, you know, you guys have done this long enough, and I did it long enough. And there are so many times where you're interviewing players or coaches, and, you know, they have a superstar on the team. And you ask them about that superstar. It's like, what surprises you most about, you know, Sidney Cros on the team. And you ask them about that superstar, it's like, what surprises you most about, you know,
Starting point is 00:34:27 Sidney Crosby or Jonathan Tays or whoever, right? And they always talk about the work ethic. Nine times out of ten, it's, I can't believe how hard this guy works. And that's kind of going to tie back into Petey, and it's beautiful that you brought up Crosby because, you know, Rick Tockett was on your guys' show a few weeks back prior to the start of the season, and he mentioned that.
Starting point is 00:34:49 You know, he's mentioned Elias Pettersson's work habits, practice habits a couple of times, and nothing major, but just saying, you know, we're working with Petey on this. We need more out of Petey. You know, he talked about the fact that, what was it, you know, he takes 21 timers, he's going to take 101 timers, right? And it's interesting that they've talked about that because, to me, it sounds like they want to get more out of Pedersen in practice. You know, the one thing about practice, and people will laugh about it,
Starting point is 00:35:16 but it's about developing habits, right? And you develop those habits, and then, you know, you carry those habits over into the game. I mean, you see that sign, like, and I wrote about this a game. I mean, you see that sign, and I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, you see that sign in gyms everywhere, right? The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. And I think that's what they want to get from Petey.
Starting point is 00:35:33 They just want more of an investment and it starts in practice. I've never seen that. I must not be going to the right gyms. Wait a minute, they don't have that at Ron Zalco's? Oh, you guys. Ron Zalco that at Ron Zalco's? Oh, you guys back me up. At Ron Zalco's. Ron Zalco.
Starting point is 00:35:48 Wow. When's the last time you were in a gym? I don't know, but I can't find my leg warmers anywhere. Oh, man. The kids out there are like, what's a Ron Zalco? Kids out there are like, what the hell are leg warmers? Okay, Moj. They're back, I moj they're back i think they're back
Starting point is 00:36:06 moj before we let you go uh we have to do a food related ask us anything someone wants to know the mount rushmore of the way to consume potatoes so you know i mean i think this goes without saying there's about a billion different ways to do it god this is a great one the mount rushmore of consuming potatoes. I want a shot at this, but we'll give Moe's first one. We've had this one before where they pick the best, and it's almost impossible because I think there's approximately nine million ways to consume potatoes,
Starting point is 00:36:34 and many of them deserve a shot at number one. So the Mount Rushmore, the top four of ways to consume potato. Have a stab at it, Moj. Okay, number one, Greek. I've made those a couple times like you just load up like a tray in the oven with the sliced potatoes chicken broth oregano whatever so like greek style potatoes like you know like yeah i'm with you yeah yeah thank you that they're tremendous um another way to consume potatoes potato salad. If you've got a really good potato salad recipe, I would go potato salad. White spot, to me, the smash browns.
Starting point is 00:37:14 You know those smash browns that they have? I'm familiar with their work, yeah. The breakfast ones are real good. They make it sound like a plumbing company. The smash browns are good, They're real good. You can make it sound like a plumbing company. I know you like that work. The smashed browns are good, so I'd go potato salad. And then if I had to go, I'd probably go mashed. Like, I mean, it's a standby.
Starting point is 00:37:36 It's an old, you know, it's easy. And I'd probably have to go with mashed. Those are good answers. I like them all. Bruv's going to take a turn at this, and I'm going to take a turn at this as well. Hey, could you use French fries? yeah 100 percent take uh take this take the mashed potatoes out and go french fries you could have a mount rushmore of fries yeah i'm but i'm gonna get more specific yeah and none of this stuff will be like i make it like i would okay well we'll keep you on the line here like let's let's uh i would go um uh mcdonald's fries so just okay yeah okay no no no no no no you can't get two fries on the
Starting point is 00:38:14 mount rushmore so that's your fry option okay but okay mcdonald's fries don't even compare to white spot canabic fries sorry wow old controversy okay sorry well Oh, it's controversial. Okay. All right. Well, I'm not that's a- I take the white spot fries over the McDonald's fries. Okay. Well, I'm not going to have that ridiculous argument. I'm taking McDonald's fries, keg, twice baked potato. That's a good one. I need potato skins in there somewhere.
Starting point is 00:38:38 Yeah. Now, I don't know who has the best one. TGI Fridays? Well, you can get those at Costco. Are any of your references from this century? Well, you can get those at Costco. Are any of your references from this century? No, you can get them at Costco. They're not good for you.
Starting point is 00:38:51 I just want to know, Bruf, do you ever cook yourself or do you just eat out all the time? I don't cook for myself very often, Moj. How does one get a potato skin? What's your fourth one? I don't know. I'm having trouble with that one. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:07 You know that like 90% of the nutrients of a potato are located within like the potato skin? Yeah. That's why the potato skins are so delicious. So healthy. And so healthy. Lacking nutrition whatsoever. Okay. For a guy who wanted to do a Mount Rushmore potato like fries, you've only got three.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Where's the fourth? What about the humble latke? The potato pancake. Ike, the potato pancake? I love a good potato pancake. I do like the smashed potato. Like Moj was saying. Yeah, yeah. You take the underside of a glass, you bang a parboiled potato,
Starting point is 00:39:33 and then you fry it off. Yeah. So good. All right. Okay, Moj, enjoy potatoes. Enjoy the weekend of sports. And we'll talk again next Friday when we preview whoever the Lions are going to play.
Starting point is 00:39:46 And hopefully they can take that Vernon Adams magic and go on a magical run all the way to the gray cup of BC place. Yeah. Very quickly did a piece on Luke Shin and Tyler Myers for Black Press this week. Pretty good story there about Luke or pardon me, Tyler Myers losing his truck to his dad because, well, he wasn't doing well in school.
Starting point is 00:40:04 So check that out if you can. Have a great weekend, fellas. Thanks, Moj. Appreciate it, buddy. That's Bob the Moj Marjanovic, presentation of the West Coast Auto Group here on Sportsnet 650. Great service, great selection just over the bridge in Maple Ridge. So I am a very novice cook.
Starting point is 00:40:20 I like being in the kitchen. I like making things. I try different things i for apparently for christmas this year uh i am going to try and tackle as we speak about potatoes the potato pavé also known as a potato terrine so what you don't know what either of those are so what you do is you get a man the tree you get a mandolin you You know what that is. Is that an instrument? It's where you slice super thin. You've seen it. It's like a metallic slide that's got the razor's edge on it.
Starting point is 00:40:52 The mandolin is an instrument that you play. Yeah. Yes. It's a mandolin. I don't know what to tell you. That's what it's called. Are you sure? Words can have two meanings.
Starting point is 00:40:59 Google it up, dogs. You guys always... They're called mandolins. It's called a mandolin. It's called a mandolin. Is it a mandolin? I don't know. Okay, whatever. It's also an instrument, yes. I're called mandolins. It's called a mandolin. It's called a mandolin. Is it a mandolin? I don't know. Okay, whatever.
Starting point is 00:41:06 It is also an instrument, yes. I feel like we're getting hung up on the wrong part of the story, but okay. What you do is you slice the potato like paper thin. It takes forever to make, and it's potato, and everyone's like, why so much time with the humble potato? Okay. You slice, and you slice, and you slice, and you slice, and then you stack them on top of one another.
Starting point is 00:41:23 You add heavy cream and salt, and you slice and you slice and then you stack them on top of one another. You add like heavy cream and salt and you sort of push it down. And some of them, like the real high-end, like Thomas Keller chefs do a hundred slices of potato. Okay. And then- Per potato?
Starting point is 00:41:35 No, no, no. Like it could take multiple potatoes. You have to get all the pieces paper thin and then you stack them on top of one another. And then you make like this sort of square where it gets really crispy on the outside. Then the inside it's really tender because they're all these paper thin it takes approximately 12 hours to prep and two hours to cook and like five seconds to eat right because they're small it's a square yeah why are you doing this i don't know that's a
Starting point is 00:41:58 good question could you bring it to work and we can have probably not you should when it comes to like food i'm gonna prep for you I'll bring in a raw potato. I'll be like, here you go. You heathens just eat it. Ask us anything. What's the better night out? A Halloween party? Saw this one.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Or a Christmas party? I saw this one. It jumped right to the front of the queue. It's Christmas party. Yeah. Christmas party for me. It's Christmas party. Christmas party with the boys is so great.
Starting point is 00:42:23 That one night out around Christmas. Christmas Eve sometimes. Christmas Eve is That one night out around Christmas. Christmas Eve sometimes. Christmas Eve is a good night out. Yeah. I went to a nightclub once on Christmas Eve. It was a dark time in my life. Wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:32 I like a good cozy Christmas party where, you know, the only thing you have to do is maybe wear like a Christmas sweater or something like that. The thing with the Halloween party is I hate finding costumes. Agreed. I hate it.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I've hated since I was a kid. Like, you know how kids like to dress up, some of them? I was always like, I don't want to do this. This seems like work. One of the few things you and I had in common, I hated Halloween growing up. I hated finding a costume. I didn't care for it.
Starting point is 00:43:04 I remember one Halloween as a kid, I just went as a hockey player because I was like, I'm going to wear my gear. I'll wear my gear and I'm a hockey player because I just wanted to kind of cross it off the list.
Starting point is 00:43:16 All right, I don't want to think about this. And there's some kids, I think they're weak. They're just like, they're like, I want to be a superhero. Like, you're not.
Starting point is 00:43:24 No, that's called being a normal to be a superhero like you're not no that's called being a normal child no but you're not that's being a normal child i don't know he's not the fact that both you guys didn't like having halloween costumes as a kid is very sad but also explains a lot i just kind of went like toys either like i honestly yeah you had a slinky once and you straightened it, right? Everyone's into Transformers. I'm like, you know they're not real. Right? They're not real. Neither is G.I. Joe. Read a book.
Starting point is 00:43:54 Did you have an imagination as a child? Yeah, I did. I had an imagination. I didn't need toys to tell me what my imagination was. Okay, was there ever a time where either of you actually put a bit of effort into it and dressed up as something cool? I went as Al Bundy for 10 straight years in my 20s. And into my 30s.
Starting point is 00:44:11 I'm talking people. And into my 30s. People's nodded and respected it. They're like, that's a pretty good costume. The girls hated it. The guys were like, that is awesome. I had a Polk high shirt. I had brown pants, like those work pants that he would wear. You looked like Al Bundy.
Starting point is 00:44:25 Brown shoes. I looked like I worked at a shoe store. I occasionally carried around a football. I was like, I'm Al Bundy. You like it? You get the no man. And it's perfect too because I would never want to be in a Halloween costume that was a mobility concern either.
Starting point is 00:44:42 You know, you get some people who are like, oh, that's pretty funny. You're inflatable or something like that. No, I'm with you there. And then it's like, oh, well, we're getting an Uber. I guess you're going to have to get your own because you're inflatable. Yeah, yeah. No, I'm with you. I don't love the elaborate Halloween costumes.
Starting point is 00:44:56 It has to be nice and simple. But as a kid, though, did you ever have a cool one? Was there ever one time where you broke the mold and went, okay, I'm actually doing good this year? No? That's not true. When we were working a bow dog, I'm saying kids. Oh, no. But when we were working a bow dog one year, he taped a leaf to the front of the bill of his cap and it dangled in front of his mouth. And then every time someone asked him what he was going for for Halloween, he'd blow the leaf and said he was a leaf blower.
Starting point is 00:45:24 That's a good costume. Very, very dismissive because people would also get like me like blowing in their face. So it worked on two levels, which was great. Okay, we're up against it for time in the 7 o'clock hour. How can you even answer my question? Did you ever get a good costume as a kid? I've told this story a million times.
Starting point is 00:45:41 Who's Florida one, man? The Wade Boggs story. You haven't heard this? I vaguely this story a million times. Who's Florida one, man? It's Wade Boggs' story? Wade Boggs' story. You haven't heard this? Wade Boggs' story. I vaguely remember the Wade Boggs' story. I was really into baseball when I was like six, seven, eight years old. That's all I wanted to do. And it was around the time of the 80s. I can't remember what
Starting point is 00:45:57 series it would have been. 87? 86 World Series with the Red Sox. But I'm trying to think of the one where I got enamored with Wade Boggs. Anyway, so I asked my mom, of the one where I got enamored with Wade Boggs. Anyway, so I asked my mom, I'm like, can you make me a Wade Boggs costume for Halloween? She was like, yep, sure, 100%. And I was like, awesome. So I'm thinking I'm going to get this very elaborate, ornate, hand-stitched Boston Red Sox uniform. Like, they're going to mail order it from Boston, and then she's going to stitch.
Starting point is 00:46:23 And as it got closer and closer to halloween i was like all right mom let's talk about that wade boggs costume how's that coming i've seen no work done i haven't seen any packages arrived to the house and it just kept and she's don't worry i got it under control and i'm like all right and then i've not heard the sewing machine turned on yeah like i've seen no effort whatsoever on the way boggs costume and even at that age i knew it was going to take some work and then we got finally to october 31st and i woke up in the morning and it was my dad's old bctel softball uniform with a piece of paper on the back that said boggs i was like this there's no with one g yeah the number wasn't even right and i was like this is i mean there's no effort in this whatsoever you haven't even tried not even tried and i've been
Starting point is 00:47:13 promised this for weeks i think it may have been why i didn't like halloween yeah it scarred you for life right it just it's all coming together now there's like people would come up to me they're like who's boogs i'm'm like, it's Boggs. Okay, there's a typo on the back of my very, very sad jersey. Please leave me alone. A few years later,
Starting point is 00:47:29 he tried again with Mike Greenwell. His mom let him down again. I was like, we can't have another Wade Boggs situation on our hands. Carla,
Starting point is 00:47:37 I was calling her Carla at that point. So, anyway. All right. That was Halloween. Again, if you think this show
Starting point is 00:47:44 has been stupid just wait rick dollywell is coming up next on the alfred and brough show on sportsnet 650
