Leon Dreisaitl scored 11-18 into the first overtime session.
The third overtime game of this
unbelievable Stanley Cup final. The Ebb and Toilers evened that Stanley Cup final by defeating the Florida Panthers 5-4 in game four, tying the
series at 2-2. Here's what Dreisaitl's winner sounded like. Okay, so most of the people listening to this show watched what happened last night in Florida.
And I just want to start off with some appreciation for how awesome this Stanley Cup final is.
And the good news is we've got at least two games left.
Probably three, but at least two.
I know we normally make fun of everything,
so it's sometimes hard to sound earnest and, you
know, like.
Genuine and authentic.
Yeah.
This is hockey at its best.
It's fast, it's physical.
There's been crazy lead changes and you have no
idea what's going to happen next.
Now I wish it was the Canucks playing this hockey,
but it's not.
No.
Clearly.
But I hope everyone has the time to enjoy it.
Whoever you're rooting for, or even if you're rooting for no one and you're just enjoying the hockey,
this series has had everything.
Three overtimes, tons of scoring chances,
tons of goals, but also great saves,
incredible defensive plays.
There's just a lot of talent out there on the ice.
Not to mention some unsung heroes like Calvin Pickard.
There's bad blood, there's big personalities,
that always helps.
And, you know, everyone's got the rooting interest in this,
I think, but, you know, it's just, I've loved it.
I've watched every minute of the Stanley Cup final,
and to be perfectly honest with you,
that hasn't always been the case in the last few years.
I haven't made it like, I mean, I would know the
game is on obviously, cause it's part of my job,
but it's not like I have to be on the couch at
five o'clock and I'm booking this time off.
I am not doing anything else.
I am watching these games.
You mentioned the rooting interest.
My rooting interest right now is that this
series goes as long as humanly possible.
Every game goes as long as humanly possible.
And the series goes as long as humanly possible
because the entertainment value that the Edmonton
Oilers and the Florida Panthers have given us
over the last two Stanley Cup finals might have
superseded the last 10 Stanley Cup finals before it.
I, it's been unbelievable what they've been able to put on.
And I want to throw again, in the interest of being earnest and genuine
to Paul Maurice, a guy that we have poked fun at over the course of these playoffs.
I think and it's impressive that he was able to do this at a moment's notice.
But he was asked yesterday in the aftermath of a loss, no less.
Very difficult to collect your thoughts after a devastating loss like that.
If he's able, while coaching and watching this all go on to take a step back and
appreciate exactly what he's witnessing when he's not stressing out over line
changes and the ebbs and flows of the game.
And Maurice took a second to pause and compose himself and delivered a pretty
eloquent response to what he's thought of the caliber of this series so far.
Here now, just over a minute of uninterrupted Paul Maurice following yesterday's wild game four
of the Stanley Cup final. I think we focus on sometimes the mistakes that get made
by good players at times and you miss some of the heart and soul and the
intensity of it. It's so fast. Every board battle, everything can turn into something
so there's a tension because both teams can score. From my point of view
there's been phenomenal goaltending in this series. The numbers tell me I am lying, but the final score says I'm lying, but
the goaltending has been incredible because the game can break on
slot pass to Sam Bennett, crack a bar.
I mean, those are the ones that just everything is dangerous all the time.
So there's a mental intensity, mental toughness.
I think both teams show that the game is not gonna be over
till it is.
You get three of four games in a final into overtime.
You've got two really good evenly matched teams.
I'm gonna be really interested to see what the ratings are
like in the United States.
I know they're gonna be off the charts in Canada,
but this is a Canadian market versus a non-traditional
American market.
It's on TNT.
So you don't necessarily have the ESPN push as much,
which I think could be a factor.
PN push as much, which I think could be a factor.
But like if this isn't just getting word of mouth, you know?
No, I know what you're saying.
You know, like then it, I mean, ultimately I don't really,
I don't really care if the Americans are entered.
I'm more just curious about it because this is,
you're not going to get better than this.
Yeah.
The NHL can't deliver more than what it's giving right now.
And this is it.
This is the best we got.
And put all our cards on it.
Seriously, this is, this is the best you've got.
And if you think about this season, we had a terrific four nations
tournament and that's an NHL production.
Yep.
And then we've got this Stanley Cup final.
The narratives, the players involved, the spectacle, especially when the games are back
in Edmonton.
If you're just, I guess people don't really flip channels anymore.
No.
Like that doesn't really happen.
They flip streams.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But well, they don't. Like I don't know if people flip channels anymore.
I changed from stream to stream. Okay. But all right, nevermind.
It's not like the old days though. Right. When you're actually, I flip channels,
you just go like channel up, up, up, up. And if I miss it,
I got to go all the way around and start all over again. Like 500 channels.
I refuse to punch it. I'm just going up and down. And all the way over again. Like 500 channels. I refuse to punch in the number.
I'm just going up and down.
My TV is older than I am.
At any rate, like I just want to know what the reaction is.
Now I follow a few social media accounts of, you know, American reporters or
American personalities who are commenting on it.
And I noticed even guys like Softy Mahler down in Seattle,
who I don't consider a huge hockey fan by any means,
was tweeting out things about,
oh my God, the Oilers.
And I'm like, I don't think I've ever seen Softy tweet
about anything, maybe cracking hockey once in a while.
But this is a legendary series.
Mm-hmm.
That's why Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were there. They knew.
Can I just make an observation that probably everyone knows, but-
Your show.
The vitriol of people that hate it when the broadcast
makes a big deal out of Taylor Swift.
And I suppose I understand it.
Part of it is fatigue of Taylor Swift because
we saw it so much in the Kansas City Chiefs
games and Superbowl and everything.
But like, if that, if just pictures of Taylor
Swift and Travis Kelsey trigger you to the point But like, if that, if just pictures of Taylor Swift
and Travis Kelsey trigger you to the point where
you're like freaking out on social media,
just dial it back a little in your life.
Settle down.
Just settle down.
You might not agree with their politics.
You might be a little bit tired, but like,
just don't let it bother you so much.
You just got a snapshot of what the NFL regular season and playoffs were like yesterday.
No, no, but I saw it.
I saw it in the NFL, but a lot of it's politics, right?
It's like she came out and endorsed whoever.
There's a huge political lean to it without question.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, but it's just crazy.
It's just like she's one of the biggest stars in the world.
She's at a hockey game. Of course, they're going to be talking about this.
That's a big deal for the NHL.
OK, a couple of storylines from last night that I wanted to dive into here.
The first what do we think Corey Perry said?
So there was a couple of cool narratives here that really altered
the course of this game in the landscape.
And the first was that multiple Edmonton Oilers after the game talked about the
message of the speech or the rant that Corey Perry delivered after the Edmonton
Oilers fell behind three, nothing going into the first intermission, right?
Nugent Hopkins alluded to it. Darnell nurse alluded to it.
Jake Wallman alluded to it.
Everyone was talking about Corey Perry standing up and saying what needed to be said. Now there was another thing that
happened in between periods as well that we'll get to in a sec. Someone asked Leon Dreisaitl very
specifically what Corey Perry had to say to the guys and here's Dreisaitl's answer. He doesn't go
exactly into what was said but you kind of get a sense of the tone in the tenor
Here is Leon Dreisle on Corey Perry's first intermission speech. That's right. We can't have anyone freak out out there Okay, we've got to keep our composure
We've got too far. There's too much to lose
How many times are gonna use this pain it's too many more times
I didn't know it was coming and then they did it and I'm like, I should have known I was coming How many times are you gonna use this?
No is coming and then they did it I'm like I should have known I was going here Here's Leon dress I'd along Corey Perry speech. Well, I'm not gonna share exactly what he said right now, but the message is
that
He's been in these moments. He's not a guy that
Speaks up or yells at guys all the time that's not
his character so you know when a guy like that with that many games that much
experience he's won everything there is to win he knows how to win when he
speaks up you listen and and it grabs your attention so yeah he's a heck of a
leader so the other thing that happened in between periods is that Stuart Skinner,
who through no fault of his own was down three,
nothing after the first period got the hook and Calvin Pickard yet again comes
to the rescue of this team.
Oilers rally from a three,
nothing deficit to not only tie the game,
but go up four three before Sam Reinhardt scored. By the way,
if you want to talk about how much drama this Stanley Cup has
provided us.
Sam Reinhardt's game tying goal last night was the second latest game
tying goal in Stanley Cup final history. Do you know who's the latest was?
It was Corey Perry's from game two.
And that's going to be a footnote in this series that the two latest game
tying goals in the history of the gonna be a footnote in this series that the two latest game tying goals
in the history of the Stanley Cup finals
were scored in this series.
Anyway, Pickard comes in and gets the job done
and we started firing it around on our text thread
about the starter for game five.
And I just naturally assumed
that it's gotta be Calvin Pickard.
But then I listened to Chris Knobloch speak post-game
and I don't have the audio unfortunately,
but the Coles Notes version of it is,
the way that he talked about it made it sound
like Pickard came in and did a job past tense.
Like he came in and did what he had to do.
Not he came in and reclaimed the spot or is,
he never-
Saved our butts? Never alluded to anything. He's like, he came in and did a job. is he never, never alluded to anything.
He's like, he came in and did a job.
And I guess that's fair because it wasn't Stuart Skinner's
fault.
No, I don't think Skinner was terrible.
He was great.
He was the only reason it wasn't five, nothing.
He had 18 shots faced in the first period.
I think it was 11 high danger chances.
Like Edmonton was awful in the first period again.
Terrible.
Another incredible storyline out of this is that if you go for a four period stretch of this series,
the Oilers were outscored nine to one
and got completely dominated, right?
All three periods in game three
and then the first period of game four, they were terrible.
And yet the series is two, two going back to Edmonton.
Here's a question for everybody to answer.
Who do you start in game five
if you're the Edmonton Oilers and Chris Noblogg?
I'll turn it over to you laddie because you're the goalie guy well I
don't know how you don't go with Pickard with the way the team plays in front of
them I think that's it's been the discourse that I've seen is just the
team plays different in front of Pickard and I think it's hard to argue when you
see the result we saw the game last night it was three nothing for Florida
and they came how is that possible possible? How is that possible?
That's never, I've never quite.
Float the theory.
I've never quite understood it.
And maybe, maybe it's like, I, I don't know.
Like, I don't know how a team can just, just be
like, we're going to play, play different.
It's subconscious, I think.
I don't think it's a, it's a mental decision.
It's just, they see and they know in the back of their mind
who's back there and they know they have to play differently
in a certain way.
It's amazing.
What do they think, Stuart Skinner is the greatest goalie
of all time?
They're like, don't worry, he's got it.
He's always.
I've seen some Oilers fans say that they play looser
when Pickard's in net because they know that he's gonna
make a save.
Well is it looser or better to like,
sorry is it when Skinner's in net, not Pickard?
No, looser when Pickard's in net because they know that he's gonna come up with the big save if they
Do make a mistake so they're not gripping their sticks as tightly so Calvin Pickard the career goalie
I know but it's the one they trust more than Skinner. So how do you go against that? It's an impossible
I know who it is an impossible
It's an impossible decision for the coach because you do have to recognize that with
Only three games left in your season. Yeah, you can't go with anything other than what's in
front of you what's seven and oh I know what's in law what's in front of you is
that they play better in front of Pickard than they do in front of skinner
I don't know why there's probably a million different theories or reasons or
ideas conscious or sub but the point is that he gives them clearly a better chance of winning hockey games and
I you know clearly though clearly he's Calvin Pickard. What are the what are the numbers again?
What are the numbers with him in that there's seven? No, they haven't lost the game. He does his win. Yeah
That's clear well
it would be funny if he went with Skinner and then they didn't win the series and people like
Maybe should have gone with the undefeated goalie.
See?
That's the thing.
But the Knoblock would go like, but it's Calvin Pickard.
I think what you'd pickard would say that.
But it's Calvin Pickard.
Yeah.
You even see Pickard interviewed after.
I was like, you don't look like a star player.
You know what I mean?
He knows when he does his interviews.
He's like, this guy was in the what I mean? Like it's just. He knows when he does his interviews,
he's like, this guy was in the.
This is a big deal for me.
This guy was in the AHL what, two years ago?
Yeah.
Like if you go to his hockey DB page,
you're looking at him like, I cannot believe
you are a central figure now
in one of the greatest Stanley Cup final histories
of all time.
He was the starting goalie for Colorado
when they had that record-breaking, horrible season.
Terrible year, yeah.
He was their starter.
I think we might be overthinking it, though,
because all it comes down to is how does the team
in front of them play?
Yeah.
You gotta choose the guy that the team plays better
in front of, especially now.
But here's, okay, no.
It's a three-game series.
I don't think we are making it simple,
because here's the thing.
If you go.
No, you're not, is what I'm saying.
If you, yeah, but I don't think it's as simple as you say.
If you go with Pickard,
you don't have the break glass
in case of emergency option anymore.
He's that guy.
I don't think you wanna use that option though.
But you have to sometimes.
Sorry?
Can you not go back to Skinner?
They have not shown that they can do the inverse,
where it's like, okay, we're struggling here,
we're gonna throw Stu in and he's gonna save the day.
Cause they haven't struggled with Pickard yet.
So why don't you go with the guy you haven't struggled,
I mean, it's not, again, it's not complicated.
Go with the guy you haven't struggled with.
This is gonna sound even stupider.
Pickard as the parachute safety guy
seems better than Pickard the unquestioned
number one starter guy.
If it goes pear shaped again,
and it could go pear shaped with either guy
given the way they play sometimes.
Yeah, you're two games away from winning a cup.
I think you just gotta go with who is playing best.
I have no idea what they're gonna do.
I have no idea what they're gonna do.
Okay, do you wanna talk about the two ex-Kanucks
in this series?
Well, the one guy who's texting in,
why is no one talking about how clutch Pod Colson was
last night, and then another text five minutes later,
you guys mentioned everyone on the Oilers except pod Colson.
No, we didn't.
The reason they tied the game.
Yeah, he played well and scored a big goal.
He was awesome.
Yeah.
Sorry, let's do that again.
I missed that drop.
The seal of the Potskola family.
There he is.
Everyone's favorite.
Yeah, made a nice play on the winner too.
Scored a goal. It was a great play on the winner to score a goal.
It was a great pass on the winner. Ugly, ugly, ugly game winning goal.
Was that Nico Mika? Who gave up on Pod Sloan too early?
Oh, God, don't do this. Don't do this.
We're not. This is why partly why I think we don't want to entertain the conversation.
Yeah, because then everyone comes back and they're like,
should the connects have held onto?
I think we saw holes in scores. The cup winner. Yeah, he's
he's playing well and the sunlight content is born.
He's playing well. That's all I'm going to say. He's playing well. He's done really well.
I think we're all happy for him. Like honestly, we are.
I'm happy for him.
He seemed like a nice kid, but the connects were going to lose him on waivers because he wasn't
going to make the team. They gave him a lot of opportunities. He tried hard. It just didn't work out. It didn't work out. Like it happens.
You people, God, you people. Anyway, Troy Stetcher,
that was tough last night to watch. Uh,
costly turnover on the three nothing goal. I think.
Although he got, he did get high sticked, but.
It was after he turned it over though. He didn't look good on the play. Yeah.
And he didn't really see the ice after that and I'm not really seeing in the ice
You mean he didn't see it didn't see this. Yeah, yeah
So he sat on the bench. He had of course come in for Klingberg who had struggled
But I think Klingberg will be back back in there for for game five
and I thought it was gonna actually be a factor
because the Oilers defense was starting
to look pretty ragged.
They were exhausted in overtime.
Yeah. Absolutely exhausted.
And they were turnover pucks and they were making mistakes
but kudos to Pod Slovin for picking up the slack
and making a great pass to Dreissel for the winner.

for an extension.
There's a 24-year-old goalie in the East Coast Hockey League who was just named the playoff MVP. He's played 12 games in the American
Hockey League at that level. NHL teams are looking at him because there's not a lot of goalies
available right now. This is where the Canucks have a wealth of depth. You've got Demko and you've got Archer Siloves who has led his team in Abbey to the Calder
Cup.
Siloves is 24 years old.
Jacob Markstrom was 24 years old when he led Utica to the Calder Cup in 2014 with Travis
Green.
Siloves' play has obviously caught the attention of many teams around the league.
A young goalie takes a team to the Calder Cup.
NHL teams are going to notice.
If there is a lack of goalies out there, and a lot of people feel there is, the Canucks
may be in a really good spot here in terms of using one of these goalies to help land
them some help up front.
Because prices are high
you know if people say oh yeah you're not hearing this there this is that with
the connects when it comes to a second life center top six forward
connoisseur not that team with the best trade capital they're not the best team
with the best prospects or the most cap space
so many teams are in a better situation to acquire top six help in vancouver
right now
but the one area the Canucks do have, and not
that I'm hearing Demko and the Canucks are having
hot and heavy talks contract wise, but if they
ever get to that point and they're far apart, like
the Canucks do have a good situation in that right
now where they.
Do they Rick?
Do they like, how, how would you feel about a
goaltending tandem of Lankanen and
Sealov's next season?
Yeah, well, how would you feel if the
Connexion don't land a top six forward?
Have you looked at their top six group right now
as, as it is built today?
How would you feel?
I know buddy.
That's the problem there and their asset.
That's it.
They essentially have three top six players
Pedersen, uh, Debrusk, and Besser.
And Besser could be gone in two and a half weeks.
You, you have to, you can, you can whine about that
goaltending tandem, or you can whine about the fact
their top six group is really, really weak right now.
Weak.
I just feel like if, if, if they're, if they're, if
they want to make the playoffs
next season, they could really just go like, okay,
how do you build a team?
You build it from the net out, right?
And you could go, all right, we really like our
goaltenders and we really like our blue line.
Our forward group has some work to do, but I think
going into next season with a goalie
tandem, who knows goalies are tough to, but like
with Lankton and in Sealovs, that's the
potential for disaster in my opinion.
It is.
And you know, they rolled the dice with
Sealovs last year.
And, but this city and including the media was
all for Sealovs when remember the world hockey championships.
Some of us in the media.
Okay, but the Latvia, remember what he did for Latvia
and then remember last year.
Yeah, I do remember it.
I remember thinking like it's the world championships
and it's, you know, it's not the NHL.
Yeah, okay.
But the reality is they've got a 24 year old gold tanner who has taken the team to the Calder Cup on his back. He has started every game. He hasn't finished every game, but he started every game. But this is the great dilemma that Canucks are in.
They obviously have depth on the blue line and goaltending and but they're struggling with top six pieces. And so how do you get those top six pieces?
Look, if another team's got a top six piece, they're
probably not in the mood to give it away.
And if they are, it's going to cost you an
arm and a leg and the Canucks are finding out on
the market, how expensive these pieces are.
And I'm sorry, but they think they were
going to be cheap.
No, they didn't, but they also don't have the best
prospects to throw out there because this team has done
nothing but trade first and second rounders for the
past five years.
And you know, that's it after the caramac and
will enter, what other pick can you honestly say that
excites any other team out there?
And you know, they don't have great trade capital.
They traded their first, second and third picks last year.
Right.
There's no, we have a second next year.
This year, not if you trade the first, I mean, again, um, you know, and they
don't have all the, you know, there's teams out there with a ton of capital.
Columbus has got 40 million in cap space.
Utah has got the fourth overall pick.
They can, you know, dangle out there.
There's so many teams, uh, Jason and better positions to
acquire top six pieces in Vancouver.
Right.
It's almost like the chickens are coming home to roost.
Thank you.
Um, any other UFA updates, Besser, suitor?
Well, let me get to suitor first because, um, the Canucks want to keep him, but it
sure looks like he's outpriced himself in Vancouver.
No offers yet from the Canucks but the two sides they do talk. The number for Sooner is going to
start. We feel right now it looks like at four, four million on July 1st. I'm not sure the Canucks
will go there. The Canucks may go as far as the mid threes. Go back a year, the Canucks went to a number they absolutely
didn't want to with Dakota Joshua. I don't see them doing that two years in a row. Their
first offer to Joshua was in the low twos. They settled at three two and the only reason
they settled at three two with Joshua was because Joshua, you know, at that time was looking at July 1st offers
a 3.5 and higher. And they went to that number grudgingly like they did, but they did it.
There will be a strong market for suitor this July 1st because it's not a great July 1st
for centers and he could be one of the beneficiaries.
The Souter camp is still open to talk into the Canucks and continue talking with them. The desire for the player really is to return to Vancouver.
Um, but there, there's this situation where they're stuck.
Another team told me that the money is going to get funny on July 1st.
You know what that is? You know what that means?
You know what the translation is, Jason, expect some crazy contract on July 1st. You know what that is? You know what that means? You know what the translation is, Jason?
Expect some crazy contracts on July 1st.
And suitors could be one of them.
It could be one of them.
Um, the Canucks do view Philippine as the third line center.
Um, I don't think people realize how hard the
Canucks tried to get Josh Norris at the trade
deadline.
They just didn't have a player like Dylan Cousins to close that deal.
Canucks even tried trading for other players just to flip to Ottawa for Norris.
It just wasn't meant to be, but getting Norris at the deadline would have
solved the ton of issues.
They wouldn't be where they are today if they could have pulled the trigger on
that Norris deal and it just wasn't meant to be, but they tried like super, super hard to get that guy.
It just wasn't meant to be.
Brock Besser, the Canucks keep in contact with his agent.
We're two and a half weeks away guys from July 1st.
They are showing interest but it sounds like Besser wants to test July 1st but if things
don't go his way I get the feeling that Besser would be willing to talk with Vancouver again.
One source said, where was this interest in Besser four months ago from the Canucks?
Well, what has changed is the fact that Canucks know the prices are incredibly high when they
look for top six pieces.
Term is the big issue with Besser.
It's not money, it's term.
Our team's going to give them seven years.
Canucks are at five years.
Teams won't have issues giving Besser
8 million plus.
It's the term most teams are going to haggle over.
Expect Besser to check the market, but I would
not rule out resigning Vancouver if Besser can't
get what he wants elsewhere.
And if the Canucks don't land a top six piece by
July 1st.
Does Besser still want to stay in Vancouver or
has he gotten to the point where he's like, I feel
disrespected by this organization and he's done.
He was, he was.
He felt disrespected.
They acquired two penguins, give them both long term
deals days after they arrive.
Alvein's comments at the trade deadline did not
go over well with Besser in his camp.
Um, yes, he felt disrespected,
but he also now realizes that, you know, July 1st is a different animal. Like he may not,
like Jason, he may not get what he wants on July 1st. Like one team told me that, you know, hey,
everyone's going to be, Hey, look, don't forget. He's got two coaches out there who love coaching
him. Travis Green, Rick Tuckett. there's a lot of coaches that have gone in
vancouver gone through vancouver in the last eight nine years that know
the character of the player you know there's there's teams out there there's
going to be interest but the thing is are you going to overpay on term and
money for Brock Besser um the goal of the goal for Besser was
always to resign to Vancouver, but if things
don't go his way, is there a possibility he could come back? I've just been told everything
is on the table right now, but it's just a situation where, yeah, you're right though.
Yeah, they could have talked to him last summer. They didn't talk to him. They've had 11 months
to do this. They've had 11 months and now it's where are we now in the 11th hour we're down to the wire and it's still not solved
right but there there is contact. One more guy I want to talk about is Noah Juleson. No
no contract talks with Juleson yet but why do we get a Noah Juleson update every week?
I'll tell you why because he might end up back in Vancouver. And I'm going to tell you, Jason, he is a UFA.
This is Vancouver.
Like, I mean, you know, to not give you a, you know, a Juleson update, I'm not doing
my job.
No contract talks with Juleson, but his camp did ask the Connect for permission to talk
with teams recently.
And the permission was denied by Vancouver.
The reason it was denied
is because the correct may or may not need to listen it depends on if they
trade a right shot defensemen for top six help
if the connects move a man senior will lander for a second-line center
the connects may have to resign
jules and to be that six seven guy
one of the reasons they resigned Forbert is
because if you get rid of Forbert, you get rid
of Juleson, the only people fighting for positions
five, six, or seven in Vancouver are young kids.
You know, young kids, no veterans.
Well, Forbert's also a pretty good player.
Like he's for sure an NHL defenseman.
He's a great penalty killer.
I don't think Juleson's in that same
category as Forbert. They like him though. No, I know. an NHL defenseman, he's a great penalty killer. I don't think Juleson's in that same category
as Foreboard.
They like him though.
No, I know.
So I'm going to tell you something else.
There's no guarantee that man senior or Will
Lander are going to be full time NHL ready
starting in September.
Juleson supplies depth that Canucks may badly
need, he'll have interest in July 1st, but do not
rule him out depending on what happens here.
But his camp did ask the Canucks for permission
to talk with teams and it was denied.
And the fact that it was denied tells you that
they still like Juleson and they might need him.
So that's why I'm giving you a no Juleson update,
Jason.
That's why.
Okay. You've put me in my place. What did the Canucks do with the first round pick? So that's why I'm giving you a Noah Julesen update, Jason. That's why.
Okay.
You've put me in my place.
Thank you.
What do the Canucks do with the first round pick?
Well, if they don't move that pick and a lot of
people will be surprised if they keep it.
I already told you guys four weeks
ago who to keep an eye on.
I told you guys a month ago, the Canucks really liked that Seattle kid, the center of Braden
Coots.
They took him out for dinner last week at the NHL Combine.
They love his compete level.
Character is off the charts.
He is the youngest captain in the Western Hockey League.
To name a kid at 17 as a captain in that league, wow, it tells you about his character. Um, Canucks have, Canucks have Coots ranked
higher than most other teams.
Um, but I believe the Canucks dream pick
is still Roger McQueen.
Um, six, five, right shot center out of Brandon,
but he won't be there when the Canucks
pick at 15th overall.
Victoria's Cole Reschne is another center
they really like, they're really high on, right?
So, um, so. What are the chances they make this pick though? 15th overall, Victoria's Cole Reschney is another center they really like, they're really high on. Right.
So, um, so.
What are the chances they make this pick though?
Like I've, I've just assumed they're trading it.
I, I, I, well, and here's another one for you.
Still, nobody has any idea why GM Patrick Alveen
didn't go to the NHL combine.
Um, Buffalo was filled with agents and GMs. So many around the NHL have baffled
as to why the Alavine didn't go. And I'll tell you something else, the Canucks contingent
they sent to Buffalo was very small as opposed to years past. So yeah, I don't understand
why Alavine didn't go to the combine. Maybe they've got it fixed in their mind that
they're trading that pick, but boy, you know, Todd
Harvey did the bulk of the work for the Canucks in
Buffalo, but I'll tell you something right now.
A lot of people are really shocked and surprised
he didn't go to Buffalo.
Let's talk about Abbotsford in the Calder Cup.
What is your biggest takeaway from the organization reaching this level?
Yeah, that's a great question because I spent a
lot of this week trying to figure out this team.
And you know, people ask, why is Abbotsford
in the league final?
Nobody predicted this.
Jason, I don't remember one person saying to me
last August or September, watch out for Abbotsford.
They're going to the Calder Cup.
Why is this team so good?
One of the reasons is because there has been a consistent message and standard set all
year by Manny Maholtra.
Through all the injuries and all the call-ups to the Canucks, the message and the standard
never changed.
There were times the media thought a player in Abbotsburg was being healthy scratch this
year but the player was actually being sad
Because he was late for a meeting with Manny Maholtz right you can't negotiate that
He's a no-nonsense guy that way. It'd be a pro on and off the ice
Maholtz or a stock
No question around the league is gone up a lot of guys in Abbotsford stock has gone up, but I think the guy mostly is absolutely
unequivocally manny.
The other question I have for you, Jason, is who makes the jump to the Canucks from
Abbotsford next year?
Linus Carlson in a bottom six role.
I heard you talking about him this morning.
He's smart enough defensively.
He's got enough touch offensively to become a regular next year.
Max Hassan is skating.
That guy's close.
He loves depending on what happens in Demco at two rat to, I don't know.
Like if.
Heedle and Bluger are your centers in the bottom six next year.
Where does he fit?
But I'm going to take you back to Travis Green's Utica Calder Cup team.
Who made the Vancouver roster off that Utica team?
Jacob Markstrom.
He was the key.
He was the key in the playoff run.
But Markstrom didn't make the roster after that great playoff the year after.
He didn't make the Vancouver roster consistently until two to three years later.
Sven Barchi made it.
But four of the five top Utica
scorers in that playoff run were American
hockey league veterans.
Cal O'Reilly led that team with 19 points.
Brandon DeFazio, I think.
That's it.
Yeah.
The Canucks had three first round picks on that
Utica team, Hunter Sinceregg, Brendan Gonson,
and Nicholas Jensen.
The point I'm trying to make is don't expect a ton
of Abbotsford players just to, because they're in the
Calder Cup, they're just going to walk into the
Vancouver roster.
It doesn't work that way.
Especially in top six roles in top 4D, like the
defence in Abbotsford, like I, can you honestly tell
me there's one defenceman there that's close?
I don't think so.
Kudryadzev might be.
Yeah, but he could be two, three years down the road.
He had Sordermenio two or three years down the road. He had Sorderminho two or three years down the road.
That kid's going to be good.
And Mancini could make the team next year.
Yeah, Mancini could make it, but he's never been an NHL regular.
So we got to sit, we got to sit and wait.
But the point is everybody's saying, Oh boy, you know, the
Connex Farm team's in the, in the Calder Cup and Oh boy, there's going to be half
the team's going to end up in Vancouver.
That's not the way it works. And you just got to go look at the Utica roster
in 2014 to understand how that works. The two guys and Jake for 10 and did play 10 playoff
games, but we knew Jake was going to be in Vancouver anyways. But the only two guys off
that Utica roster that made it were Markstrom and Sven Berchi. And that was it.
Um,
Oh, one more thing. Sorry.
I, cause I heard you guys talking this morning.
I would be surprised if Jonathan
and Kieromacky plays tonight.
He's been a healthy scratch the last three games.
The bottom line is he's not producing.
He, there is no secondary part to his game.
He can't play on the fourth line.
You need guys on that fourth line to hit everything.
The moves that's not him.
No, it's the playoffs.
It's physical.
He's not in the bad books of anybody, but who do you take out?
Why would you change a winning formula?
You have to dress the best lineup.
It's a learning experience for LaKara Mackie.
He will be better for it.
But, um, I, I would be surprised if LaKara Mackie. He will be better for it but I would be surprised
if LaKara Mackie is in the lineup. Just the team is going so well. They play
four lines and I would be a little bit surprised if he gets in. Okay just a
couple minutes left here. We'll end on a low note and that was the BC Lions
performance last night in Winnipeg. I'm sure a lot of people
were watching the hockey game instead of the Lions and that might be a good thing for the BC
Lions because it didn't look very good in Winnipeg. So why is this league making the
Lions play Thursday after they played last Saturday? Lions had one practice before they
got on a plane and went to Winnipeg, Winnipeg had the bye week.
Like explain that to me, CFL schedule makers, like, why would
you do that to a football team?
Allow them to have one practice and go.
Now, despite that lines got beat by a team that was missing their
number one quarterback and their number one running back went out in the first
quarter, Winnipeg still ran for 200 yards with a rookie running back.
That can't happen and they better pray and hope that Nathan Wark isn't out long
term because if he is, you know, that's not going to be good, not good at all.
Nathan just looked disjointed right from the first drive. He had no time to throw missing receivers rushing throws opposite a week one
The key stat last night was second down conversions lines were 34% the week before there were 70%
Against the Eskimos
They got to figure this out and they got a really open prey
Nathan works not out because if that guy's out
really hope and pray Nathan works not out because if that guy's out Jason that's not good for the BC Lions. All right Rick enjoy the weekend enjoy the hockey game tomorrow and I'm sure you'll be
dialed into the US Open as well you won't be. Oh are you kidding me? Did you see the rough?
Could you get out of that rough? No I wouldn't be in it. I heard you're a good golfer. I'm not that good. I heard you're a good golfer.
I'm not.
I heard you good.
Uh, see you buddy.
Bye.
Rick Dollywale everybody on the Halford and Brough show on Sportsnet 650.
You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough.
