They didn't get a roster player back No, that's the point of the trade, but they might They might add what we love about this management group. Absolutely. It's always the next domino That's right I mean we can assume the trade was because they're trying to get a center right? And at eight o'clock it is the Moge.

Before we do any of that, let's tell everyone what happened. Hey, did you guys see the game last night? No. No. What happened?
Starting point is 00:05:08 I missed all the action because I was... We know how messy your life can be. What happened? You missed that? What happened? What Happened is brought to you by the BC Construction Safety Alliance making safety simpler by giving construction companies the best in tools resources and safety training visit bccsa.ca and with all due respect to the open which we will touch on its second round is in swing here at Royal Port Rush. The big news locally the Canucks traded forward Dakota Joshua to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a fourth round pick all the way in twenty twenty eight and as a dog referenced and as we have become accustomed to with this
Starting point is 00:05:56 management group, we see a trade like this and our immediate question is what's the next domino to fall? What's the next shoe to drop? And we will get into that. I do think it's worth taking a moment or two before we get to that next discussion. Okay. Is it Jack or all as of it? Who's it going to be? Are they going to wait? Is it Mason McTavish as we heard from land in Ferraro as a suggestion on the intro clip
Starting point is 00:06:19 before we get to that part of the discussion, I think it's worth kind of just taking stock of Joshua's time in Vancouver, what he did and also why ultimately this was the path that management shows with the player, despite not that long ago having signed them to a pretty significant extension. And you know, Joshua was one of those players whose early pro career was really affected by the pandemic and you know taxi squads and didn't get a ton of time in the HL. It was all disrupted a bit of a late bloomer. I think the story is actually that he had been playing with Utica when they were sharing like yes St. Louis was using Utica as part of their farm team as well and Ryan Johnson saw him was like oh man this guy this guy's got some potential. The Canucks signed him to a really cheap deal. 11
Starting point is 00:07:07 goals the first year. And then of course, remember the second year in Vancouver, he really blossoms finds that chemistry with Ted, with Teddy Bluger and Connor Garland and Garland, especially scores 18 goals in 63 games, has some big moments in the playoffs for them as well. And you know, at his best, he was kind of, I don't want to call him a true unicorn or anything, but it's rare to have players in the NHL with that combination of size and hands and touch around the net that he showed at his best for sure. And there's a reason, especially going back to that season where he found his game, he found chemistry with Connor Garland, that he was he was a fan favorite. People really
Starting point is 00:07:44 liked watching him play He was one of the more popular players in arena like reacting to what he's doing You know, it's not like there were Joshua jerseys everywhere But he was what he was doing on the ice got a reaction from fans and hey We like what this guy's bringing to the table as you said, Jamie showed up in the playoffs I actually I had to laugh a lot yesterday when I saw the tweet that said that Dakota Joshua has scored more playoff goals in the last two years
Starting point is 00:08:11 than Mitch Marner and his team missed the playoffs the last season. So that tells you a little bit about where he's going and the mindset of Maple Leafs fans at the moment. I think they're happy to have them. I think for a guy like Dakota Joshua, and we can get into how difficult last season was for him. There were some very legitimate reasons for that.
Starting point is 00:08:32 And it's that weird thing that happens when you sign that contract for a guy like Dakota Joshua, as you laid out, Jamie, the early part of his professional career was pretty turbulent. And for a lot of reasons that were outside of his control, but he wasn't necessarily getting the opportunity that he wanted. It was quite up and down. He comes to Vancouver, he gets that opportunity, he gets a long-term contract that pays him pretty well for a number of years. And very quickly, that contract becomes
Starting point is 00:09:02 a little bit of an anchor, not an anchor in the sense that it was completely getting in the way of everything the Canucks wanted to do, but it was at least a question of, hey, where is this guy on the pecking order right now? He's certainly not among the top four wingers. No. He's probably behind Kiefer Sherwood and Drew O'Connor at this point.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Can you really afford to have a $3 million guy on the fourth line, even though he does bring all those skills that you mentioned, the physicality, the ability to get to the net and to score goals, he got squeezed out and I do think that he's probably, while I'm sure would have loved to have an opportunity to have the bounce back in Vancouver, looking at it as I can do this in Toronto there they you know, they brought me in for a reason Yeah, and of course part of the story with Dakota Joshua then is coming into this season Battling cancer and that's just incredibly difficult circumstances and it takes him a while to get on the ice and then He was never really able to make that consistent impact I know there was other injury issues as well this year. And I don't think,
Starting point is 00:10:07 and first of all, we should give credit to our guy Thomas Trance at the athletic. And of course my Canucks talk cohost here on six 51 for, for breaking the trade yesterday, but also for kind of being all over this in the weeks leading up to it pointing to Dakota Joshua and also Teddy Bluger as, Hey, like be prepared. This is definitely something that can happen. They're exploring it. These are targets on the roster. And as we've been talking about that and you know, relaying Drance is reporting, we've gotten some questions
Starting point is 00:10:36 like, well, hold on. Why is it Joshua? Why are we not talking about Neils Hoaglander? Why are we not talking about Drew O'Connor here as potential guys to move? And I think you just look at it and it's it's not holding Anything against him from last season, but it was a down year. He's also 29 He's a lot older than Neils. Hope you're better So you just kind of go through the combination of you know, Drew O'Connor Obviously they prioritize to get from Pittsburgh and sign him and I think the the speed element is a bit of a separating factor There what they like between him and I think the the speed element is a bit of a separating factor there but they like between him and Dakota Joshua you just kind of go
Starting point is 00:11:07 through all the different factors and Hoaglander making less money slightly but substantially younger and I think you would still say a lot more upside so if you're kind of judging between these three wingers okay how what's the most logical move this frees up the most cap space and you're also sending out the oldest player and I'm not sure it was anything more complicated than that. You know there's been some like I think Rick Dahlia was an other souring on Joshua. I don't know if it was that I don't know if it was like I were out on this guy as a player as much as it is. We want to have some cap
Starting point is 00:11:38 flexibility. You go through the list of options in front of us. This is the guy that makes the most sense ultimately maybe Maybe by a narrow margin, but you can understand why he was the target. Yeah, absolutely. And the things that they have valued and valued when they gave him a contract extension, those things didn't really change. And those are, I think, the things that are powering the opinions that we're seeing from the fans, that he has a physical element that a lot of the rest of the roster doesn't have.
Starting point is 00:12:07 And that's the reason that people like him and valued him and what he brought to the team. Those players, Drew O'Connor could maybe be a lesser version of that, but he does have the speed. Hoaglander we know has the speed. We know he can be a bit of a water bug and a little bit of a of a pest but it's he's not gonna bring that Top-line absolute physicality that a player like Joshua is so I understand fans now looking at the lineup and thinking well Where are they getting that from? Well Kane maybe well I was gonna say I want I do wonder how much the Evander Kane
Starting point is 00:12:39 Acquisition kind of gave them permission just internally. I'm sure you know what I mean in their own perspective say, okay Well, at least we got someone who we think we can we can be a better version of that. Yeah right. It took come in. Now this text comes in. Why are the Canucks getting rid of size and grit for not only just a fourth round pick but a fourth round and fourth round pick in three years from now. I get that like it's not like you only need one great player right so oh Vander Cane so now we can just get rid of anyone else you also can't prioritize
Starting point is 00:13:11 it over everything else right and clearly there's only one they want to see they need the money for two sets exactly like they don't have a choice I mean the Leafs like it was a steal for if I was a Leafs fan I'd be thrilled like if Joshua gets back to his peak you pretty much got the guy for free. Like that's a huge win for the Leafs this year. They definitely took advantage of the situation and the fact that the Knucks needed to move somebody out. And I mean, I don't think they could have gotten
Starting point is 00:13:33 much more based on their situation, but man, if I was a Leafs fan, yeah, I'd be thrilled. But also, I mean, you look at it, and they gave a fourth round pick for Vander Kane, right? So you can say, oh, fourth. They took advantage of the Oilers in the exact same situation. Oh, fourth round pick. What does that do for you? Well, it gives you ammunition to make moves like this, right? If another team is in a tough spot, this can
Starting point is 00:13:52 allow you to go get the deal done for similar tier of players, right? And obviously I think a Vander Kane has more upside than Dakota Joshua does going into this year, but that's ultimately what this is about. It's nothing, it's not a commentary on Dakota Joshua. And I get the, it's unfortunate that I don't, that he didn't have a chance to come back and have a fully healthy season with the Canucks and kind of remind everyone what he could do when he's in a really good physical spot. But I don't think this should be read as a verdict against him as a player or a
Starting point is 00:14:22 verdict against what they could expect from him this season. It really is in this case more about clearing up cap space for what they want to do next. Now, as we've become so used to with Patrick Alveen and Jim Rutherford, we're expecting I think everyone naturally expects you see Dakota Joshua out for a fourth round pick. And I was wondering, is it going to be before our show that we'll see the next move, right? Cause you think back to the JT Miller trade, it was later that night that they flip it
Starting point is 00:14:49 for Marcus Pedersen. There's other examples on a smaller scale where it's, you know, I go back to like the Travis Dermott trade, right? Where they moved to Hammonic. And I think it was not long after that, that it's Travis Dermott coming from Toronto. We'll see, I know again to reference Drance's reporting he said kind of well hey they might be comfortable going in to the
Starting point is 00:15:09 season with this cap space and kind of seeing what comes available but that really is where everyone is going to be looking now and what we're all going to be waiting for. What is right there. Jack Rossovic is there when he go guy. I mean I know he's not he's not a favorite amongst Canucks fans necessarily. I know some people aren't necessarily interested in the Canucks acquiring him, but he's scored 20 goals a couple of times and he's a serviceable player. So Rick Dollywell has mentioned that there's been conversations with Jack Rosalvick now sat our guy Satyarshah here at the station said
Starting point is 00:15:40 they're maybe still looking to clear more cap space. Right. So that could be Teddy Bluger. That could be somebody else if they want to make a move of more significance than just someone like Jack Roslick. Drantz again as I said suggesting that one they don't necessarily see any of the any of the remaining UFAs as the kind of quote-unquote solution to the two-seas issue which doesn't mean they wouldn't be interested in them but maybe they're also interested in keeping their options open into the
Starting point is 00:16:06 season. So you add all of that up and would it shock me if, you know, in an hour here, we're talking about a breaking Jack Roslick signing? No, it wouldn't. But I also don't know that we should just kind of mentally expect and commit ourselves to, Oh, we're going to be analyzing the Canucks new two C on Monday. You know what I mean? This was something that could, it feels like it was not, we have to do this because we've got another deal in the hopper and we have to clear the cap space right now. It was more, we know we want cap space, so
Starting point is 00:16:36 let's just do this and then we'll see what comes along. Yeah, it's an option now for them where it simply wasn't. They did not have the cap space to bring in a player like Jack Roselvick on a one or a two year deal at this point. And so they've given themselves that avenue to explore that. And it's a weird situation with him because he's been now on the market for 18 days. We have not heard any reporting really about why that's been the case. What was he looking for?
Starting point is 00:17:08 Was he thinking, I've been mentioning it throughout the week, that he think that he could get an AAV close to Christian Dvorak's, 5.4 million in Philadelphia given how much Rozelvik has produced in his career. As Adog mentioned, multi-time 20 plus goals. He's been a guy that's been 30, 40 points pretty consistently. He just had an effective season with the Carolina Hurricanes, a winning team, right? We're not, we are talking about a guy
Starting point is 00:17:34 who's bounced around a fair bit, but most recently was just part of a team that was one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. So it's not like what we see kind of time and time again, where sometimes there are some players that put up numbers on some bad teams, one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. So it's not like what we see kind of time and time again, where sometimes there are some players that put up numbers on some bad teams, they go to free agency and teams aren't all that interested in them
Starting point is 00:17:51 because sure, you put up 40, 50 points, but you did it on a team that didn't do anything. Jack Rosalvick put up 40 points on a team that made the playoffs. And it was going into the playoffs seen as one of the Stanley Cup contenders. And I'm curious if his number is just that high and at this point, if it's been three weeks and that number hasn't gone down.
Starting point is 00:18:12 We saw it famously in Vancouver with Pia Suter a couple of years ago. At what point does the number go down? Yeah. Because what we have seen time and time again is if you set a number at July 1, and that number does not get reached right away, there's no point, I think, in lowering your demands immediately. Because you are going to get an NHL contract at some point.
Starting point is 00:18:38 So wait it out. See if teams make some cap space. Because say, he went, oh, well, no one's going to sign me. I'm going to take whatever, $, 2.5 million somewhere else. And then the Canucks make a trade. And now all of a sudden they've got nearly $4 million to make a move, especially with all of the cap space. And yeah, a lot of it is from teams that you project to be farther down the standings,
Starting point is 00:18:58 but not all of it, right? There are teams that are, you know, at least in the playoff mix that still have a fairly significant cap space to spend. You have to think he's not that desperate yet. Jack Rosalick, like I don't think we're in the one year, three million dollar range or anything like that for Jack Rosalick. Now, is there a way for the Canucks to get it done if he wants to come here? Yeah, I think there probably is. But it does feel like maybe it's more about him waiting for the right opportunity
Starting point is 00:19:29 Than it is man. No one's even offering me a contract like I think that was the pew suitor thing Like I don't know how many go back a couple years I don't know how many offers he was getting of any variety Right until the Canucks came calling and I doubt that's the issue of Jack Rosavick Although as you said there hasn't been a lot of reporting on that. So I mean who knows at this point 650 650 is the dumb bar lumber text on this text comes in Carlson, Baines and Sasson are the happiest to hear about Dakota Joshua's trade. And I do think even more than, okay, Jack Rosalick or okay Marco Rossi or Mason McTavish.
Starting point is 00:19:58 And we can talk about those players and those targets more concrete than, okay, a two C is coming in the domino fact the clear domino effect from trading Dakota Joshua is about those young players and I would say ranking them. Linus Carlson is the number one benefactor of this deal. This is a guy obviously we all know what he did in the Calder Cup playoffs for Abbotsford, his scoring touch around the net. Ruff loves him on the show. Well, and- Ruff's a big, what's the word, a stand?
Starting point is 00:20:28 He's a big stand. Is that how Ruff calls it? Carlson stand. Yeah. Number one Carlson stand. Yeah, that's it. But he looked good. Or he looked at least not out of place in his NHL minutes,
Starting point is 00:20:39 right? And then you see his goal scoring prowess at the AHL level. And it makes sense that the Canucks are looking at this and saying, you know what, we would not pencil him in, right? Not gift him a spot in the opening night lineup, but they were so crowded on the wings before the Dakota Joshua deal. It was going to be very, very difficult for any of those young players, right? Whether you prefer Carlson or Baines or Sasson or even a Jonathan Leckermackie. And I think he's going to be in tough to make the roster at this
Starting point is 00:21:06 point, considering the waiver situation for some of the other players, it was going to be extraordinarily difficult for any of those guys to crack the roster breaking training camp. Now you at least have the path and would it, it wouldn't shock me at all to see, you know, a veteran winger on a PTO or a, a one year kind of veteran minimum deal come in to provide a little extra competition but the path is going to be there for Alina's Carlson for an RSD Baines for a Max Sasson at the very least you can pretty much guarantee I think Carlson and Baines are going to be either on the opening night roster or the last cuts right they are
Starting point is 00:21:42 going to get every opportunity at this stage of their careers as needing waivers I don't think sassin needs waivers I could be wrong about that all you're talking waivers specific so I think sassin can go down and I think that just inherently look it's open for him but I think that inherently makes him a much easier cut than Carlson or Baines the Baines is probably clear in waivers Carlson might get picked up But still I think those two guys are gonna get absolutely every opportunity to make this club coming at our training camp for sure You need those guys at the bottom of the roster for cap reasons even though the cap is going up but the Canucks are going to assuming that they make another move between now and
Starting point is 00:22:19 training camp and soak up the remaining cap space or the cap space that they opened up with the Joshua trade. That's what made Joshua an attractive player a couple of years ago. He was someone who could contribute his first year contributed in a fourth line role. His second year contributed in a third line role where you're feeling amazing about that contract at that point. If Carlson or Baines can come in and I think based on the wingers that they have already, very likely to be a fourth line role, but still a role that you need to fill on your team. And if you can do it at close to a minimum salary,
Starting point is 00:22:51 that is essential, right? That is essential to have efficient cash. Well, I think back to what Patrick Alveen had to say after the season before this most recent one, right? The great season where they go to the playoffs and talking about needing to find an extension for Dakota Joshua. And what was the line? Well, I have to find the next Dakota Joshua. Now they did ultimately keep Dakota Joshua and I'm not saying Carlson is the
Starting point is 00:23:14 same player, but similar profile as a bit of a late bloomer coming to the NHL, some physical tools on the wing and okay, can you get more out of him? And as you said, at league minimum, he's making $775,000 next year. So if you can get a guy that you feel good, not just, oh, we're going to call him up from Abbotsford and he's going to plug into the lineup on occasion, but no, he's a third line winger for us. That might be pushing it even a little much for Carlson, but if you get that, that's an incredible value and that kind of represents what Dakota Joshua was giving them before he's the Moch. I don't want to go to Winnipeg. Nobody wants to go to Winnipeg.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Yes, I love food. It's the Moch. I went online and kind of did a little surfing. Jamalanya. Yes, it's the Moch. Starting point is 00:25:43 He is a presentation of the Clayton Public House. He is of course, Bob the Moj Marjanovic. Moj, what's going on, man? Good morning, counselor. Good morning, Izzy. How you doing? Doing well. Looking forward to a big game tomorrow
Starting point is 00:25:57 versus the Saskatchewan Rough Riders at BC Place. Yeah, no kidding. It's an exciting one and the Lions coming off a couple of wins in a row But this figures to be a bit more of a test certainly when their last win against Edmonton was yeah I mean the one against Montreal was fine and Danny is a walk-off field goal by Sean way But even the Lions will tell you in that game. There's a lot that they had to clean up And they played a pretty complete game against Edmonton last week.
Starting point is 00:26:25 However, it's Edmonton. It's a team that is struggling, only has one win on the season. And here comes Saskatchewan Roughriders who suffered their first defeat of the season last week at home against the Calgary Stampeters in a bit of a fiasco with all the delays and all that. But I think you're gonna see a fired up Saskatchewan
Starting point is 00:26:43 Roughrider team coming into BC place and should make for a great game. Lions three and three through six been some ups been some downs but some injuries as well that's part of the conversation obviously first and foremost Nathan Yeah to me it's one of the kind of a underlined storylines with this team and I don't think people are talking about it much but I mean offensive line has been ravaged by injuries and you know you've lost a surprise offseason acquisition from the Toronto Argonauts, a you know former MVP offensive lineman in the league. He's been out of the lineup, Tyler Packer's been out of the lineup, Michael Couture's been out of the lineup, so they lost David Foucault in the preseason who was going to be their sixth offensive
Starting point is 00:27:26 lineman. So, you lost a whole bunch of pieces on that offensive line. But as we saw last game, you had guys coming in and filling in and getting the job done. Guys like Andrew Pearson at center, you know, Manning playing a tight end roll. So it's been a nice job by Paul Charbino, the offensive line coach, um, to get that group going. And, you know, with injuries come opportunity, we see it on the defensive line as well, because you've lost a couple of interior guys the last couple
Starting point is 00:27:53 of weeks in Dwayne Hendricks and Jonah Tavae and you have a guy like Kamasi LaLule come in and just dominate. Um, he's a guy that's come in and played really well for the Lions and Kamoko Turei is back this week. He missed last week due to a suspension. Kavai hopefully back. So all of a sudden now you're starting to get some depth on these, these with these two units, just because of the fact that you've had all these players gain this experience in time due to injuries. What does that say about the job the front office did building this team that they're able to withstand some of these injuries? And as you say, not just injuries,
Starting point is 00:28:26 but key injuries to the lines. And we all know how important the line of scrimmage is, right? And the fact that they're sustaining some of those and still able to get back to 500 is pretty impressive. Well, I think one of the things that has changed this year, and I know we've talked about this in the past with Jason and Mike, was that with Ryan Rigg-Maden taking over as general manager, you were bound to see players get looks that probably wouldn't have before.
Starting point is 00:28:56 And I say that because in any team, there's always a battle with the personnel guys, the general managers and the coaches. I shouldn't say a battle, but always discussions, always debates. And personnel guys, they've, they've been following guys maybe four or five, six years through their college career, maybe a couple of years in the NFL, whatever the case may be. And they got a pretty good book on guys, right? When a guy comes to training camp and he has five bad practices, guess what the coach wants to do? You know, it probably wants to cut them, right?
Starting point is 00:29:25 And yet, you know, the personnel guys are like, no, give this guy a shot. I mean, he's gonna be okay when it's all said and done. So it's kind of that battle, that debate that always goes on. And in previous years with the Lions, with Rick Campbell, I think there was a real tendency to go with what we know and not to give players that we don't know extensive
Starting point is 00:29:47 looks. And I think with Ryan Rigmaden taking over as general manager, these new players are getting a lot longer leash and they're getting a lot more look. And you know, Lau Lule is a perfect example on the defensive line. Like, would he have gotten a look with Rick Campbell? I don't know. Right? I can't say for sure, but you know, given the fact that Ryan Rigmaden was high on this guy and you know, been scouting him for a while, you know, they were high on this kid going into camp and he got hurt in camp and obviously he's come back and been a force to be reckoned with. If we look at the first six games here as the first chunk of the season, now the Lions
Starting point is 00:30:21 coming back home for a big game against the Ryder's as you said, what's important for them over the next few weeks here? What do you need to see? Well I think just to keep building on what they did against Edmonton and that's playing just a disciplined football. The turnovers were a thing that absolutely killed the BC Lions in their three losses and they kind of cleaned that up a little bit. Penalties, it's funny because the first three weeks of the season they were the least penalized team in the league. The first three games of the season I should say. And then two games in a row they just got absolutely hammered penalties like you know triple digits. And then last week against Montreal they were pretty good for the most
Starting point is 00:30:59 part but they got a little sloppy at the end when the game kind of got out of hand certain things happen and you know maybe it was just a case of the score dictating guys being a little looser. But that's one thing I think Buck Pierce always talks about is penalties and turnovers. And you know, that's the one thing that you always have to be on the right side of if you want to win football games. And I know it's maybe a little early to be doing too much standing watching here, right? Still a lot of season left in the CFL,
Starting point is 00:31:23 but still you look at the West division standings and you know, already with the three losses in the loss column and the teams above them, Calgary, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg now granted they've all played fewer games than the lions, but all sitting on only one loss from that perspective. I mean, how important is this one against Saskatchewan? As you said, we know it's going to be a tougher test, always a big game when the, when the riders are in town, but even this relatively early in the season, it feels like a big game in the standings too.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Yeah, it is. And you know, the, the fact of the matter is the Lions lost their game in Saskatchewan. They lose this game tomorrow. They've lost the season series against Saskatchewan. So not only are you behind Saskatchewan in the standings, but now if there's any sort of tie, the Saskatchewan Rough Riders would have that tiebreaker. So it's a double whammy in that sense. Yeah, and you're exactly right.
Starting point is 00:32:13 I mean, this is a game that, I don't want to say it's a must win. There's a lot of football left. And with the crossover, who knows? But you don't want to be caught in a hole where you're looking at a situation where you have to climb a mountain. Yeah, no doubt about it. Moj, while we have you here, I wanted to ask you as well about the Canucks trade that went down yesterday afternoon, Dakota Joshua on his way out. He's, he's a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs now fourth round pick coming back.
Starting point is 00:32:41 And you know, as is so often the case with Jim Rutherford and Patrick Alveen, it feels like this move is all about what comes next with the cap space they opened up. Yeah. You know, we've heard Jack Rosalick's name being mentioned a couple of times here and there, but I mentioned this with Halfer and Bruff a few weeks back. I just, you know, one of the things that I really were well kind of gleaned in talking to people within the organization last year was that they needed to strengthen their leadership group and that was a priority with how would we put it
Starting point is 00:33:13 people who are no longer with the organization and it was something that you know they you know Rick Taka talked about it he wanted to prioritize that to improve the leadership group within the team. And none of the moves that we've seen, I mean, you bring in a Vander Kane, okay. But there's no other moves that have kind of, you know, you, that would probably help in that situation in that regard. And I still think they're there on clearly their moves coming by clearing some cap space with Dakota Joshua. But I think that's one of the things that they want to address and they will address before it's all said and done you know it's interesting because Canucks fans are always in a
Starting point is 00:33:49 fury about all the moves but Ryan Burke had a great line he said we'll play a game until October right so there's a lot of time between now and October and it'll be interesting to see how the Canucks move forward in terms of some of their moves. I think most fans see the logic here and moving some cap and opening up some roster spots as well but the one feedback that we've been getting since the trade went down yesterday in the text box is some people concerned about the loss of the physicality and then that Joshua brought that element to the team. Where do you think that that lands on the Canucks list of potential concerns? uh... okay so couple points
Starting point is 00:34:25 uh... one you know if you lose some physicality in joshua but you need to be getting some physicality in a band of kids so uh... trade-off but the but the one thing that always kind of amuses me is when people look at a trade and they start critiquing a team or they're saying this is all we got for them. Remember, you have that cap space now, right? Not only did you get the pick back, but you've also acquired cap space.
Starting point is 00:34:53 What are you going to do with that cap space? Once they make a move and fill that cap space, then I think you can look at this and say, okay, well, maybe they went out and got another rugged winger who's the leader, whatever the case may be, to address some of their issues and some of their concerns. But, you know, that's one of the things that I always look at when these moves are made. Fans always have a tendency to kind of fly off the handle and, you know, we lost Dakota Joshua.
Starting point is 00:35:17 Well, no, you traded Dakota Joshua and you're gonna get cap space. What are the Canucks gonna do with that cap space? So, until those moves are made, until that cap space is filled up, it's, you know, it's, it's tough to judge this move moving forward. Hey Moj, one of the big stories, the sports stories of the week, Cal rally winning the home run Derby, kind of getting his moment in the spotlight and a chance to be acknowledged for
Starting point is 00:35:41 just the incredible season he's having so far for the Mariners. And I understand you've unearthed maybe a bit of a Vancouver connection with Cal rally. Well, a little bit of a Vancouver connection. So, um, we've had our original six fantasy baseball pool since 1990, right? So every year we draft prospects and there's, we have a five round draft where we draft guys in the minor leagues. I mean, it's pretty deep. I mean, I drafted Julio Rodriguez when he was like a rookie ball. So anyway, Cal Raleigh was, you know, prospect with the Mariners and he was not
Starting point is 00:36:14 a great prospect, right? He was ranked like, you know, probably like number 10 with the Mariners, like within the organization. He wasn't even one of their top five guys. So it was like a middling prospect, so to speak. But anyway, every spring I get together with Andy Dunn. We usually go for coffee or whatever. And Andy, of course, was the president of the Vancouver Canadians for many years. And by the way, just got hired by the Detroit Tigers as VP of business ops in case people didn't know. But Andy, every year we kind of talk about certain guys. He
Starting point is 00:36:42 goes, Hey, you got to drop Cal Raleigh. And I'm like, Cal Raleigh, I go, he's not that highly ranked. He goes, I played baseball with his dad. He was my roommate at Western Carolina. This kid is going to be good. Get Cal Raleigh. Of course I didn't listen to his advice, but Andy Dunn called that one from a mile away
Starting point is 00:37:00 and a personal connection there with Andy. As he mentioned, he played college baseball at Western Carolina with Todd Raleigh, cows down. Well, and Todd, as we saw, can groove it in BP, huh? He was putting it right in the wheelhouse every time. Well, he even beamed his kid and it was funny because I actually phoned Andy and I said,
Starting point is 00:37:18 I remember the story you told me like many years ago. I just phoned Andy the other day. And he was telling me, he goes, yeah. He goes, he also hit his own kid. He goes, what's he doing? He still keeps in touch with them. They, they text and, you know, call there every so often. And Andy said he was texting him and giving him a hard time about flunking his kid and in a home run Derby contest.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Yeah. I feel like he'll be hearing about that one for a while. Are you a fan? Are you pro or con on the big dumper nickname? I did a show with Brough on Monday and he was like, it makes me uncomfortable. I don't like it. They, they do shots of his butt too much. And it's like, I think it's hilarious. What do you think about the big dumper? Nick? You know what? I like it. And I'll tell you why, because it gets people talking and it's different. Okay, come on. It's, it's original. It's not, it's not rousy. You know what I mean? A hockey nickname these days is just adding S Y to a guy's name, right? Bill Z. Yeah. My Z right. I mean, who's he right? I mean, come on,
Starting point is 00:38:10 let this is original. You gotta love it. It's a great nickname. I mean, it's one that's never been used before and I think it's awesome. I think it's fantastic. And he got the porta potty sponsorship this week off of it too. So that's anytime your nickname is setting you up like that, you got to feel pretty good about it. Okay. We got to wrap up here. It's an ask us anything Friday. I know your favorite segment here on the show Moj and a Timmy,
Starting point is 00:38:32 the tuner texts one in for you says Moj, the big thing on tick talk right now is Browning the pasta first before you boil it. Have you done this? And is it worth it? I've never heard of this. No running the pasta first. No, no clue. You know what? That's a great question and I'm gonna have to defer to my colleague, Julio Caraveta, because he's like a pasta expert but I've never heard of that nor have I done it. So I looked it up here quickly and they say you can either like do it in the oven I guess on a baking sheet for a little bit or like on, on a skillet for a little bit, just toast it up a little
Starting point is 00:39:08 bit, brown it and then boil it. I might have to try it at some point. No, no. You know what? I might have to give it a roll. I'm definitely now, now I'm intrigued. Yeah. And I'm definitely going to talk about it with Julia during the broadcast tomorrow night. I'm shocked you hadn't seen it on Tik TOK already. No. All right Moja, this is awesome man. We appreciate it as always. I have a great call in the Lions game tomorrow. Okay, fellas have a great weekend. Thanks Moja.
Starting point is 00:39:31 That is Bob the Moja Marjanovic, of course doing color commentary for the BC Lions and covering all things Vancouver sports. Joining us here on Halferd and Brough every Friday. Have you ever Browned your past? I've never heard of this. I'm not on the TikTok. Not on the TikTok. TikTok makes me feel the way the big
Starting point is 00:39:47 dumper makes broth feel. I've only seen like my wife used to use tick tock and I like I've seen individual tick tock. Yes, I have to, but I'd never really seen the app before and she showed it to me just like the experience of like being on tick tock and it's just like video, video, video, video. And you don't really like fall or in the fall as much Yeah, it's a poor man's vine man. I told I reached their perfection with vine and it's all gone downhill from there My reaction was it's like it felt like
Starting point is 00:40:14 The social media or app you would see in like a dystopian science fiction movie. That's what it felt. Oh, we're there Jamie We're living in a dystopian science fiction universe. So that's fitting humanity has gotten progressively stupider since tik-tok was released I said I wonder if there's a correlation there. Although Twitter is Twitter certainly didn't help in that social media in general I'm sure is a leading factor in that. Yeah Well that actually makes me think of on this a year from now Christopher Nolan's the Odyssey will be released Okay, I saw the trailer when I went to see Superman they because they haven't released the trailer to the public It's not on the internet just in the us in theaters, which is an interesting choice and it's a very little tiny teaser But it looks cool. Well, so you could buy your tickets and a year in advance. Wow and
Starting point is 00:41:01 What happened is that a bunch of people bought tickets and now they're trying to scalp them. So a regular, you know, IMAX movie, 25, 30 bucks, they're trying to sell them at least in the US, 500 US. And I think I saw on social media as people going, people's brains have melted so much from social media that they might be willing to pay $500 to go see a movie that they could just go see two hours later. Or the next day. It's not this exclusive concert
Starting point is 00:41:27 That's only doing one show and you got you it's it's super exclusive It's not a Stanley Cup final ticket where it's like there's only a few of these you're gonna be able to go There is a man going to be in every movie theater across the continent But in the piece I was reading the argument was basically that people are so pillied by social media that if they're not at the first screening then they feel like they're missing out. That's sad. That's tough. What a depressing story you just shared with us, Izzy. Yeah, I just thought, you know, we were right on the precipice there with the dystopia.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Let's just ram it through. Push it over the edge. Does sound like a cool movie though, but I will not be paying Secondary no way Prices that's absolutely wild. All right, six fifty six fifty is the dumb bar lumber text line We got a lot of great ask us any things that are coming in and we're gonna dive into those next we can do some what? We learns potentially as well. I did just want to Kind of close up on what we were talking about earlier, which is who is the next Canuck that's going to be honored by the team either in the ring of
Starting point is 00:42:28 honor or to have their jersey retired. I wanted to give a shout out to a name that came in a lot as a potential, which is Tony Tanti. And now Tanti we were talking like we were talking about has the moment passed for Ryan Kessler. Obviously Tanti played in the eighties. So it's been a long time and you do kind of think if it was going to happen, shouldn't it have already happened? And I know, you know, if Rick Dollywell is listening, which I'm sure he is,
Starting point is 00:42:54 he'll be very happy that we've brought up Tony Tanti's name. It came in a lot in the inbox. He is sixth all time in goals for the franchise. 250 goals in 531 games played. I think the thing holding him back is, you know, only eight seasons and I say only, but you know,
Starting point is 00:43:11 we look at a lot of the greats who've been retired, who've been honored in some way. It's more than that. It's up into double digit seasons, longevity for sure. And then of course it's the lack of playoff success as well, right? He wasn't a part of that 82 team right after comes in right after it. So he doesn't even have that on his resume and how much weight do you want to put on? You know the guy who was a best player on perennially disappointing teams. I'm not saying it should have no weight like he put up numbers. It's also that was a very high scoring era in the NHL. It sounds like I'm really trying to like bring the hammer down on Tony Tanti's
Starting point is 00:43:45 candidacy here. I'm not necessarily, I don't remember watching him and I'm not old enough for that. So I don't have the same emotional connection. It just feels like it would have happened by now and it's probably that ship has sailed and he's a guy that's just, especially if the bar has been raised, been raised here by the organization, he's a guy that just doesn't quite get there. Well, here's the argument is, in terms of production and in terms of longevity,
Starting point is 00:44:11 his entire Canucks tenure is similar to what Brock Besser has done now. So if you're pro-20 team, and like you said, best player on some bad teams, Brock Besser, I guess maybe outside of the rookie season, has not been the Canucks best player. No, but he's been a good productive player, yeah. And you're skittish on if Brock Besser
Starting point is 00:44:32 plays another seven years here and scores some goals, where does he end up? So Brock Besser at this point is not, you know, slam dunk ring of honor at this point. Tony Tanti's numbers are very similar to that similar to what Brock Besson has done. To not play a ton of games, you have to be Pat Valbura. You have to be the most exciting player in the league, the best goal scorer in the league at that time. Otherwise, it's Stan Smeal, Trevor Linden, the Sedines, Marcus Nazlin, all played tons of lifers.
Starting point is 00:45:00 Yeah. And even you look at the ring of honor guys, right, like Burroughs and Mathias Olland. It's like they played a ton of games and had those moments for the team as well So shout out to Tony Tanti awesome Canucks career But I think falls short of the bar Alex McGill me another guy that was texting. I don't see it five years Like had some good years, but also some very frustrating moment But yes, and I get he's in the Hall of Fame now But it's just not enough connection to associated with other teams Yeah, didn't have the longevity again. We all love Alex McGillinley. He's awesome
Starting point is 00:45:30 Yeah, no disrespect people's favorite player from that era Yeah, but doesn't doesn't have the total resume to to get to that level from a Canucks perspective I think we have at least one what we learned that we should get to from the four of us Hey dog, we going to you. Yeah, I guess it's it's that time of year again as a West Ender I should I should mention there's a big thing happening in the West End on Saturday tomorrow It's the 2025 celebration of lights once again, but they're back Saturday next Wednesday and then next Saturday are the three performances 10 p.m. To 1030 p.m It's if anyone's ever gone is you know 200,000 people in a very craddy is very crowded
Starting point is 00:46:11 But so if you're planning on going I would get there early if you can especially if you want to get a spot on the beach But it is a lot of fun and the performances are usually excellent this year It's a little bit different because it's not international. All three teams are from Canada. I don't know if this is like an elbows up sort of theme. I think so, but I don't know. I'm not 100% sure. But nevertheless, so tomorrow it's the Yukon. On Wednesday it's Quebec.
Starting point is 00:46:35 And then next Saturday, the 26th, is Nova Scotia. So three teams from Canada. Sure. The three provinces and territory, I guess, that are well known for their fireworks. Is there? So like like does every province have? How do you choose like who's doing the Yukon fireworks? You know what I mean? Like, is there like, is there like, where are you selecting?
Starting point is 00:46:54 Yeah, there's like an internal, an all-star team of Yukon fireworks. They won the districts and then they went on. It would be funny if it worked like that. Other provincial fireworks competition. Yeah, I don't get it. But anyways, I don't know I never really understood how they chose the countries when it was I don't either the whole thing is confusing to me I just throw something in a dartboard kind of thing. So you live in the West End
Starting point is 00:47:12 Do you go down to the beach? Okay, not anymore. No, okay I mean in the first couple years we did just add a novelty and sure luckily My dad also lives in the neighborhood and he's higher up than me so we could kind of see from his place I really want to see it But no generally generally speaking it is way too crowded So yeah stay indoors, but I mean it's it is cool to do if you've never gone before and see as a kid I used to go all the time I remember like in high school right out of high school still called Symphony of Fire at that point
Starting point is 00:47:38 I believe and we would always go like traditionally every year through like my late teens into my mid-20s probably But now no It's just the novelties worn off too many people. Yeah, I went a couple of times in high school and now the thought of going I'm like, yeah, not for me I will say though is like if you have a day off and you're wanting to make a day of it and the weather Yeah, if you get there by noon, it's not super crowded yet You get a nice spot on the beach and you're just hanging out all day. Just watch just kill ten hours That's a long time. Hey, you'd be surprised what you can do, you know in this city. Yeah
Starting point is 00:48:14 Yeah, but it's it's it's a lot of fun if you've never gone before you don't mind crap All right. There you go. Give us the moocow on that All right, I think we are ready now to go into the listener submissions. So let's print them off. And what we learned is of course brought to you by AJ's pizza on East Broadway, expand your palette with AJ's white pies made with Rosemary and infused with cream sauce or garlic oil only at AJ's pizza online at AJ's dot pizza. And we'll start with the the winner of the hundred dollar gift
Starting point is 00:48:53 card to AJ's pizza from mustard shoe. Jeff great nickname. First of all, who texts in ask us anything. Would you rather be considered the best athlete in the sport of your choosing to never win a championship? Or be considered the worst in the same sport to win one for example, Dan Marino or Brad Johnson now That's a very in the NFL. It works really well because of the quarterback thing, right? Like no one talks about the worst Player or the worst middle linebacker to win a Super Bowl or the worst, you know, fourth liner to win.
Starting point is 00:49:28 It's like, yeah, of course there's been lots of random guys who've been bottom of the lineup players, but I think you could worry. It could work for a goalie conversation maybe for sure. I don't think it's a conversation. You think it's I'm Dan Marino every day. That's the thing, right? Cause you're presumably you're getting Dan Marino sized paychecks.
Starting point is 00:49:47 You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough.
