Kintec Canada's favorite orthotics provider
powered by thousands of five-star Google reviews.
So, Raffi, what are you waiting for?
Kintec, that's what you're waiting for.
There you go.
Okay, here we go.
It was never supposed to be like that.
See, Halford screwed you up there.
He did things that I now have to do.
Well, you don't have to do that.
I actually hate that when he says that's what you're waiting for.
He's just supposed to say Kintec.
And it's because he can't do it.
He always has some weird way of like, Kintec! Josh has just resigned to the fact that he's got to say Kintec. And it's because he can't do it. Like he always like has some weird way of
like Kintec! Josh is just like
resigned to the fact that he's got
that's what you were waiting for.
Like I actually want to, when you started
doing that, I was going to be like
no, no, no.
We're not doing that. Just tell me
the how for things not to be. It's too late now.
You know
who's really good at it?
Dodd.
Like, bring back Jamie Dodd.
Just saying.
He just says, Kintac.
Yeah.
He's a real expert with the reads.
You don't even know he's doing them.
Doesn't make a big deal out of them.
Anyway, go on.
Sorry.
Jamie also adopted the that's what you're waiting for thing last week.
We're all there.
I'm sorry.
Halford's like a virus.
Today on the show, 630.
He affects everyone one by one.
Nick Schuch, writer for NFL.com.
We'll get into preseason week three in the National Football League
and takeaways from it as it continues, what you want to see,
what teams want to see from their players in week three.
I want to ask him about the kind of like Tua stuff from earlier in the week too.
And Brian Flores, now a defensive coordinator
for the Minnesota Vikings,
does he ever get another coaching job?
Right, yeah, because he's coaching your Vikings now,
probably hurting their feelings a lot.
Yeah, probably, but it's okay.
They're just defenders.
He's like, none of you should be here.
None of you should be here.
You're right. Yeah, we of you should be here. None of you should be here. You're right.
Yeah, we are pretty bad at football.
7 o'clock, AJ of AJ's Pizza.
7.30, Stacey Jo Rost, host for Seattle Sports Radio.
We'll talk about the Mariners because they made a move.
They fired Scott Service and their hitting coach.
I told you it was coming, bruv.
I told you yesterday.
Okay.
Did you have the scoop?
Struggling team fires coach.
Team that can't hit fires hitting coach.
Laddie, how did you put that together?
I had the scoop.
God, you're going to be solving murders soon.
The Blue Jays, though, are like, see, we'll do the opposite.
Double down on it, I guess.
We'll also talk to her about everything going on with the Seahawks
as they get set for the regular season.
And at 8 o'clock, it is the Moj, BC Lions play-by-play voice.
We'll talk about the Lions this week taking on the Ottawa Red Blacks.
Nathan Rourke playing again.
We'll see kind of what expectations are for him.
It's been a much calmer week around the BC Lions.
Did you see last night's game and how it was won?
Yeah, the Rouge.
The Rouge win.
The walk-off Rouge by the Argos. They celebrated.
Hey, it was awesome.
Hey, they won.
Yeah.
They won.
Something came in.
That guy was just like, I'm hitting this as hard as I can.
You know what would have been brutal, though, if he hit the post?
Yeah, and it was really close it was
close it was close i feel like you're either you either better like uh put that thing through the
uprights or just like hit it like 10 yards left if you're already i would have loved to have seen
him hit it 15 yards left i would have that would have been awesome. That would have been the ultimate and then just like wave to the
crowd and be like Argos rule
CFL rule. The Saskatchewan Rough
Riders who scored only four rouges
all last season. Oddly enough
it was the Rough Riders that lost
so that's good news for the BC Lions as the
West Division continues
to be the new
East Division. Yes. Something
Canadian in me kind of just like gets hyped when a Rouge is scored.
I love it.
I love it.
There are a lot of people like, this is the dumbest league ever.
And the other half of the people were like, this is the greatest league of all time.
So working in reverse, do you mind when Halford works in reverse?
Is that a good thing?
I don't love it.
It's not necessary.
He doesn't love anything Halford does.
Halford just puts it in there, though,
because there's these awkward...
He doesn't know how to go to what happened.
Oh, okay.
He can't...
So you can do it.
Just do it one last time.
Just do it one last time.
No, no, no.
I said the guess.
I'm only going to say them one time.
You can find them on Twitter if you're lost
and you need to catch up.
That's what's happening on the show.
Let's tell everybody what happened.
Hey, did you guys see the game
last night? No. What happened?
I missed all the action because I was
We know how busy your life can be.
What happened? You missed that?
What happened?
What happened is brought to you by the
BC Construction Safety Alliance, making
safety simpler by giving construction
companies the best in tools
resources and safety training visit bccsa.ca so a few things happened yesterday in the nhl it feels
like everything has turned on in the national hockey league every day there's some sort of news
lately there's been something canucks related almost every day which is wonderful and
yesterday there was a couple things there was a report from Rick Dollywald that we'll get into
shortly but also the Canucks made a signing a very minor signing they signed forward Sammy
Blay to a contract with the Abbotsford Canucks that includes a PTO and if you're like I've heard
the name Sammy Blay before it's because he was traded for Pavel Buchnevich a few years ago
from the Blues to the Rangers with a second-round pick.
Rangers obviously did not win that trade.
Worked out very well for the St. Louis Blues,
who then eventually got Sammy Blay back.
But last year, he was very not good.
He had seven points in 53 games in st louis um he's
a physical guy though he is a physical i was watching some uh highlight reels of his big hits
yeah and uh i was like i like this guy he hits he hits good um so maybe he's uh like he's not
gonna make the team no well well unless there's an injury. Yeah.
I don't see him out.
I don't see him making the team personally. I mean, there's a reason they,
one of the reasons they traded Paul Colson, right?
They're like, there's no real room on the team.
So we're going to trade you now
as opposed to losing you on waivers.
Sammy Blay would be, I think, a call-up option, probably.
That's most likely what's going to happen.
And maybe insurance for if, like, a guy like Kiefer Sherwood gets hurt.
Because these physical guys, like, you can never really have enough of them
because they do get hurt because they are physical.
But I like the additions of guys like Kiefer Sherwood and Sammy Blay.
I think it's important to have guys that not only get in on the forecheck
and hit, but you remember their hits.
And the defensemen on the other team are like,
that guy's not just like kind of registering hits.
He is actually hitting me.
Does that make sense?
Yeah, I get it.
Like there are certain guys that register hits.
It's like last year, the pod called Pod Colson.
Yeah, yeah.
It's like he hit, but he didn't really hit.
Yeah, there was – I mean, and we're not we're not ripping on paul coles in here for he
was taking the body finishing his checks and that's good but there's those types of hits and
then if you want to google up uh some of sammy blaze hits there's those hits too uh and so we
mentioned paul coles and it does feel like, and kind of the consensus going around, it seemed,
was this kind of fills the Pod Colson role,
but you kind of have less of an investment in him,
especially from a fans point of view.
Well, he doesn't even have an NHL contract right now.
So there are guys that might just get signed by Abbotsford.
I'm a little bit surprised that, well, maybe I'm not.
I'm surprised that he had this much trouble finding a job,
but I guess there's a lot of guys out there with seven points in 53 games
or whatever that does that don't necessarily get it.
There's a lot of Sammy Blaze out there.
Yeah.
At any rate, let's move on to the Rick Dollywell news.
So from Rick Dollywell, here is the tweet that came out yesterday,
and obviously goalie talk has been huge on this show this week yeah
good for you this is a big great reality uh he says Canucks continue to look for a goalie it
appears that Kevin Lankanen is their target Lankanen had a very strong two seasons in Nashville
made two million dollars last year the Canucks salary cap situation will likely make this very difficult to pull off. That's
from Rick Dollywall. So why would
Kevin
Lankanen
I mean besides the fact
that he doesn't have a contract
isn't the narrative around
Kevin Lankanen and Lanny might need to help us out
here. He hasn't signed because
he thinks he's pretty
good and doesn't want like a deal that's
going to pay him like league minimum yeah i think well and that's a pretty big role opportunity i
think is the big thing which would be tough to find in vancouver i'd almost be scared if he
signed here if he actually agreed to sign here because that would mean that he was told you're
going to get an opportunity here yeah do you know you know what I mean? Well, there is one connection though.
He has apparently worked with the Canucks new,
the new goalie coach Marco Terranius before.
So maybe there's a connection there.
He'd make a, you know, make a move just to be in a comfortable place
for a year and then maybe move on.
But yeah, it's still pretty fluid in this off season.
You never know what could happen.
And I think at this point, the goalie carousel,
sometimes guys are just willing to latch on wherever they can
because that's what they can find.
There are no obvious,
are there any obvious backup roles
available in the NHL right now?
Like are most of the spots filled?
You were saying that
there could be some guys
on the waiver wire even
once it comes to that time.
Yeah, every year there's goalies up.
And now look at the Canucks
last year with the Smith, right?
I could easily see a move like that happening instead. And then the Canucks are probably open to that time. Yeah, every year there's goalies up and down. Look at the Canucks last year with DeSmit, right? I could easily see a move like that happening instead,
and then the Canucks are probably open to that as well.
But if you can get ahead of the game and get a guy that you like
and a guy that your goalie coach already has worked with and likes,
I could see it being a fit in Vancouver for sure.
And everything we've heard from Woodley or other people
that have talked about the goalie market has been that Kevin Lankanen
is the guy that most people seem to be the highest on.
For remaining options that you can go with.
Well, there's not much else on UFA.
Yeah, it's like anti-Ranta.
Anti-Ranta, Martin Jones, who we learn has retired.
Or you're dipping into the European market.
The third best option is not playing hockey anymore.
Do you think if they signed Carter Hart
that that would be controversial?
Maybe a little bit.
He's one of the guys that comes up on the list.
Edmonton would do it.
Yeah, he's more of an Edmonton guy.
But do you know what I mean by if Kevin Lankanen agrees to come here
and sign that you'd be like, ooh.
Well.
Because, I mean, in reality, I think people were, like, they've got Demko.
They've got Silovs.
They already signed Patera.
So heading into this season, we were kind of thinking,
well, there's three pretty good options there if you need NHL games.
If he agrees to come here, then he's being told.
Do you know what I mean?
Does that make sense? Lakenin is also better than she loves and patera though like clearly he would be a more
legitimate backup and probably but don't you think that would mean that they're more worried about
demko than yeah but also they might be letting on they might also like the worry might be hey
can we play him as much as we played him
in recent years yeah or that was gonna be a worry heading into the season anyway exactly and so
maybe they're coming to terms with that worry and they're just like let's get a legitimate guy who
could potentially in other situations be a 1a 1b i got no problem with trying to go out and get the
best guy i just wonder um you, every time a player signs,
he wants to know, okay, first of all, how much?
But also, what is the opportunity here?
This is going to be an interesting storyline to follow for numerous reasons.
If it's a short period of time that you need him for,
you sign him for a million and a half,
you put him on waivers in a couple months.
I could see that being an option as well.
Yeah, that's true. You don't need to fully
commit to the guy. Yeah, that's true.
There's ways around it. Good point,
Laddie. Thank you. You know what? You're good at it.
You're not stuck on the roster. Can we just have a normal
non-stressful Canucks offseason for once?
No, that's not the Canucks. I feel like in terms
of options, this is pretty non-stressful.
This has happened for a while. Is this that
stressful, though? The Demko
situation is slightly stressful, yeah.
You mean without Demko
for any length of time?
What if he's broken?
Like, what if he's just like,
well, this guy's injured
for the rest of his career.
You know, like,
well, that changes
their trajectory a little bit.
I'm just saying,
what if it happens?
You're right.
It would change
What if he's like,
what if he's like,
super injured for like,
what if this-
God, I get accused
of being like a,
like a doomsayer
or whatever you call it.
Well, the fact that
I'm so mysterious about it
is freaking me out a little bit.
Just tell us what's going on!
And the fact that they're not is just like...
You know why? They're enjoying your panic.
Exactly. They wake up every morning and they're like...
What if the stress ate on you after a while?
That's not part of the plan. Just tell us what's going on.
You accuse Thatcher Demko of being broken?
We're going to break you.
I must break you.
Alright, speaking of broken, what's going on with the Mariners?
The Mariners, they have fired their manager, Scott Service,
and we've talked about it often.
Their offense is really, really bad,
and their pitching is really, really good.
Here's a stat that I saw yesterday.
Seattle's pitching ranks first in baseball,
in ERA, whip, and batting average against.
Meanwhile, the Mariners are 30th in batting average, 29th in slugging percentage,
and have the most strikeouts in the league.
Seattle has scored two runs or less 48 times in 128 games this season,
and their record in those 48 games, and 42 that's not good they they are
they're a flawed team right now and it doesn't feel like they should be this bad which is kind
of kind of why you look at the the manager oh and by the way the hitting coach jared to heart
also fired okay so um what does a baseball manager do?
What is his biggest responsibility?
Setting the lineup.
Setting the lineup.
I think.
Handing the card to the umpires. It's kind of like a vibes controller, I think, almost.
Right.
So I always have this.
Did you say vibes controller?
But I always have this conversation when a manager,
when we're discussing a mid-season manager, field manager replacement.
So he's essentially the head coach, right?
Yeah.
When it happens in hockey, I get it.
You bring in some guy and he changes maybe the
structure of the team or he probably mid-season,
the biggest thing that he would do is be like,
I'm going to hold you guys accountable.
Like you're going to bring in an ass kicker.
And when it comes to hockey, so much of hockey is going out there
and winning battles and really just, you know,
as Rick Talkett likes to say, breaking the seal.
Just you go out there and that's also the same in a lot of cases with football,
like especially with the defense.
Like we have Ryan Phillip on talking about his defense and he was just frustrated with their lack of tackling
and a lot of that is he said you know like I asked him can you teach fundamentals or whatever
during the season he's like well we don't really practice tackling a lot of it's just like will
right so a new coach either convinces you or threatens you, or maybe a Boudreaux comes in and gives you
a hug or something like that.
And you play harder, you play harder, right?
That's the whole idea of, of, of making the
coaching change.
Like in baseball, our guy, are the Mariners going
up to the plate and like not trying, or are they,
are they going up there and they're just like,
eh, I don't know like what what
can a mid-season management replacement do it's definitely less of an impact and I'm not going to
pretend that there's like equal impact to a head coach in hockey or really any other sport but I
do think there's a the the wake-up call effect is similar where when you fire a coach in hockey
it's like hey this is to wake the team
up and obviously they're not hitting expectations exceeding expectations whatsoever so you do
something to shake up the room yeah cost somebody their job costs up the room and basically yeah
exactly it's like you disappointed so much that somebody lost their job because of it two people
lost their job because of it and and and so what is the result there like do you know what i mean like i can take you down that road in
hockey i can take you down that road i'm gonna go win more puck battles right i'm gonna go and
sacrifice the body a little bit more is it guys going into the cage more and practicing more is
it guys going up to the plate and just being like all right you said you were focusing last time but like really focused this time right like do you know what i mean that's like it's it's
not a it's not a physical sport like that where you're asking to sacrifice physically and you know
you know go beyond yourself it's just it's it's it's a more cerebral sport yeah i i think it's
just the overall kind of mindset around the team,
and then that leaks into what you're doing on the field as well.
The hitting coach part of it is obviously –
I mean, that makes sense.
That's a much more fundamental change,
and whoever the new hitting coach is will probably go in
and make some changes to what they're doing
because one thing I've seen from Mariners fans –
I notice a lot of you guys have a lot –
between your
left hand and your
right hand.
There's a there's a
there's quite a bit
of a big distance
there.
You're holding it
like you're holding
it wrong.
You're holding it
wrong, right?
You know,
strawberry,
you know,
run.
Okay,
skip.
That's what
that's what you
do.
That's what I'm
talking about.
I told him to do
that.
But seriously, I think there is a an aspect of just having a different set of eyes that matters too.
Having a manager in there.
You're the liaison, right?
You're the guy that's there on the field.
You can see the heartbeat of the team.
You can make those informed decisions with upper management on how to manage your team.
So I think there is a value to having just a different set of eyes in there as well.
Okay, so Basketball Phil texting in with an early what we learned.
Actually, Basketball Phil texted this in just past midnight.
Very early.
We were all past asleep.
I was at the bar.
What we learned.
New coaches in Seattle for the Seahawks.
McDonald in for Pete Carroll.
Kraken, Bilesman in for Haxtall.
Mariners, Wilson in for Service.
UW football, like Fish is in for DeBoer.
UW basketball, Danny Sprinkle.
They got some fun names.
In for Hopkins.
There's a new athletic director at UW and Wazoo,
plus new conferences for both of them.
Oh, and the Sonics might come back.
Crazy times in Seattle.
One of the things I'm looking forward to chatting with at 7.30
with Stacey Jo Roast from Seattle Sports Radio
is kind of how different Seahawks training camp is
without Pete Carroll and all these new coaches,
not just the head coach, Mike McDonald, new defensive coordinator,
although that is Mike McDonald, but a new offensive coordinator,
new offensive line coach, and both those guys, by the way,
come over from the Washington Huskies.
It's just completely new.
I don't recognize any of the names on the coaching staff
compared to the last few years.
They're all new.
I wonder how different this team, when it's playing, is going to look too.
How many changes are they making?
Because when you have an entirely new coaching staff,
the other part of this is the Seahawks weren't bad.
Their defense was bad.
Their defense was bad.
But the team as a whole, generally when you're making huge changes,
it's not because your old coach is kind of old now and you want to move on.
Right, right, yeah, yeah.
It's because your team was really bad. Or they're mean to your quarterback exactly right and that happens
and then they go on to be uh defensive coordinators for a great team anyway um yeah so like the
defense obviously you want to have some big changes on but i just wonder like how especially
offensively i'm really interested in seeing what the changes look like.
Well, their offensive line is a concern.
Yeah.
And it's been a concern for ever, I think.
Ever.
Yeah, pretty much ever.
I feel like that's the same for most football teams.
No, not like this.
Not with the Seahawks.
And they've got issues with Abe Lucas.
And we don't even know if Abe Lucas can be ready for week one.
And frankly, you know, there's a lot of people wondering if this guy's career is in jeopardy.
This is a guy they drafted just a few years ago.
They brought in some new faces on that offensive line.
But it all starts with the line, right?
I mean, it's like we're going to have Mojan later, and he'll say probably games are won in the trenches, right?
But it's absolutely true because you're munching the Seahawks' offense.
There are some weapons there.
Yeah.
Like the running back, like their receiving group.
Gino, when he's on, when he's protected, he can make the throws.
He can make the plays.
They are full of talent on offense, but if they can't get protection
and if they can't open up holes for the running game,
they're not going to have any success.
And then, you know,
when you can't keep your offense on the field,
then your defense,
and this is what happened last season a lot,
like your defense is even in a tougher position
because the defense is like,
hey guys, we're not good.
You got to stay on the field because at the very least,
we don't want to be tired.
One other note before we go, Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins,
they swap former 14th overall picks, Rutger McGroarty,
great name for Braden Yeager, also great name.
So Yeager goes to the Jets, McGroarty to the Penguins.
There had been... Hold on, the Penguins traded
Yeager? Yeah.
Different Yeager.
McGroarty had previously
been rumored to be questioning his future
in Winnipeg, so he had not signed there
and a big part of it was not...
That's a nice way of putting it. He was like, I'm not going to
Winnipeg. I'm not questioning it.
I have some audio from Sheveldayoff, and he doesn't clear it up at all.
He tries to explain why he wanted to leave.
Sheveldayoff being just saying words and having no meaning?
Do you want to hear it?
It doesn't sound like him.
We don't have time.
We don't have time.
On the other side.
It's very, a lot of lawyer speak where he doesn't really say much.
Okay, we'll play it later.
That could be what we learn.
You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough. you're listening to the best of halford and brough you're listening to the best of halford
and brough matt not on the island with an ask us anything if you could be any kiana reeves character
who would you be neo john wick ted heaven who's heaven i don't know who that is um yeah i'm not
sure okay uh my mistake on that. I would be...
I don't think I'd be
John Wick. Well, Neo can fly, so
that's the obvious answer. Sounds like a stressful life. John Wick
gets... He takes a lot of punches.
Yeah, he doesn't do so well. I mean, he's tough, but
he's just a dog. He gets beaten up a lot.
Yeah. Probably Ted.
Yeah.
Or like Neo.
You'd pick Ted over Neo? Neo's fun
Ted's a good guy
Yeah but Neo can fly
Neo has a lot of stress in his life
You just want to be a good guy
He has a lot of stress in his life
What about the goalie he plays in Youngblood?
He flies in like the Matrix though right?
Yeah
Like you realize he doesn't like fly in real life
And that was
That was the whole idea of the movie right?
Yes I understand that
Yeah
Yeah
But then we would just be like
Wait a minute that wasn't real
The Matrix was
The Matrix?
It was like some sort of They were living in like some sort of Matrix.
That's the whole premise of this movie.
650, 650.
Kevin on the road.
Josh, what lessons have you learned since working with Bruff?
I've noticed your cheerful demeanor has slowly changed.
Has it?
I don't think so.
I feel like I'm more cheery than ever.
I think I've been pretty cheery with you as well, too.
That's good.
So maybe I've done more for you than, well, probably not.
No, it's summertime.
Yeah.
That's all.
I'm in a good mood because I can play golf.
Mike in Richmond asked us anything.
Would you put heat into the gangster category?
It was on Craven.
I was trying to explain it to my kids, and my description sounded very gangster.
No, that's not a gangster movie.
That's a heist movie.
That's a specific category of movie.
What's the best heist movie?
Heat's up there.
Honestly, it might be Heat.
I mean, it's like one of the quintessential heist films.
I mean, the Maltese Falcon,
if you want to go really, really, really old.
I haven't watched...
Ocean's Eleven.
Ocean's Eleven, sure.
Whether it's the original or the remake is very famous.
I think the remake was better.
Italian Job? Probably, yeah. The Italian Job is very famous. I think the remake was better. Italian Job?
Probably, yeah.
The Italian Job was pretty good.
I think Heist might be.
That's the one a lot of people think of first when they think of Heist movies.
Does Mother of War Dogs count?
They show everything but the Heist.
But there is a Heist.
I don't think of it as a Heist movie.
I don't think of it as a Heist movie.
I watched a bad Heist movie the other day.
Which one?
And I was really disappointed in it
Iron Eagle 4 the heist
The heist yeah
They're like oh these planes are doing outside the bank
This is gonna
Not very secretive
A lot of attention coming here
Yeah
It was with one of my favorite actors
Jake Gyllenhaal
Ambulance
Oh I haven't seen that
It was a Michael Bay movie
Oh that's already
And I'm like watching this
And I'm like is this a parody?
It is
You know how you do have to suspend your sense of belief when you watch a lot of movies?
Well, especially if it's Michael Bay.
And that's kind of his thing.
But he went to the extreme with this.
Yeah, he's nuts.
And it was so disjointed.
And you're kind of like, is this supposed to be funny or serious or hardcore?
And I had no idea at the end of the day, and I was pretty disappointed in it.
I watched the whole thing because I don't have much going on in my life,
but overall I was disappointed in it.
I think it's on Netflix if you want to waste your time on it.
One of my favorite Michael Bay things is that,
I don't know if you ever watched director's commentary of DVD.
They don't really have them anymore because everything's streaming now.
It's one of the big losses of physical media not being much of a thing
is that physical media often would come with director or actor commentary,
which you could play under the movie,
and they pretty much would just tell stories in the making of the movie.
And a lot of times it's really entertaining.
And one of the best commentaries ever is on the movie Armageddon,
which is a pretty, well, it's a fun, stupid popcorn flick.
It's a Michael Bay movie about how a bunch of, I guess, miners have to go into, or sorry, oil drillers have to go into space to stop a comet.
You remember that movie?
And so the actor commentary was Ben Affleck.
I don't want to.
Yeah, exactly.
The Aerosmith song.
I don't want to close my eyes.
Yeah, exactly. The Aerosmith song. I don't want to close my eyes. Yeah, exactly.
And Ben Affleck was doing this actor's commentary, and the entire thing pretty much was him just ragging on the movie,
saying how stupid it was, how this would never, ever happen.
And he tells a story of how he even brought this up to Michael Bay on set.
Like, this is so dumb.
No one would ever do this.
And Michael Bay pretty much just told him to shut up.
It's a movie.
Shut up and act. Yeah, lighten up. Yeah, oh, oh man it's such a great comment i actually enjoyed armageddon i mean yeah it's good it's fine it's it's yeah at the time but if i watch
turn your brain off popcorn flick yeah don't take it seriously have a good time it's got a good cast
um so let's go back to that question from kevin on the road ask us anything Josh what lessons have you learned since working with Brough man let me tell you
the like
so many
the
the amount of
like
and Jamie and I
kind of like
told people this
last week
but the amount
of prep work
that you guys do
compared to
some shows
is
it's
it was eye opening
I guess
and like the the and that's a lesson you've learned prep
the station has a culture problem apparently the station is a country club man apparently
you gotta do this thing called no so like for other shows like obviously we do prep and i've
gone through shows with no issues and like I feel well prepared for shows
What online I kind of did a little serving
Halpern spine Little surfing? To millennia. Yes, it's the mooch. Halpert's fine, but, you know, Brum, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, Moj, on a plane heading to Ottawa. So we'll get right into it. What are your expectations for the game this week?
BC Lions?
Well, I mean, this team has to bounce back.
I mean, the thing is, it's gut check time for the Lions,
and they've got to go into Ottawa and play a really good Ottawa team that boasts the third best defense in the league.
Guys, we're actually taking off right now,
so let's see how long we can sit here.
This is very exciting.
Are you actually taking off right now, or are you still taxiing?
No, look, we are taking it.
We are on the runway, so we'll see how long this goes.
This could be the shortest hit ever since Big Daddy Pratt had David Duvall on that one time,
and that lasts like 45 seconds.
I just kind of want to hear the plane take off now.
Play-by-play the takeoff.
Okay, we're probably about 30 feet off the ground.
T-Mart's sitting to my right.
He's on the phone.
And we're probably about 100 feet up now.
We are ascending out of Vancouver Airport,
and we are heading west over the ocean.
Okay, Moj, well, I'm going to wish you a good trip.
By the way, buddy, happy birthday.
60 years old.
Still out there flying planes like a young guy.
What a boy.
So here, this is how I'm going to end this.
The Lions offense needs to take off like Moja's plane is right now.
Okay, we're losing you.
See you, buddy.
Enjoy Ottawa.
That was a great hit Ottawa That was a great hit
That was fun
That was a great hit
That was probably the best hit
In Sportsnet 650 history
Does Moj not know
Is it over now?
I've been cutting audio
The entire time
It's over
Blink it's over
You didn't even listen
You didn't even listen to that?
I was cutting audio
To the podcast
We asked one real question.
One real question, and then I said, do the play-by-play of the takeoff,
and he was like, we're in the air now.
He said, T-Mart is beside me.
I'm like, he's holding hands.
He didn't even know what was going on.
He didn't even mention to me yesterday that they were at the airport.
It's this minor detail mode, but I might be flying, by the way.
Just wanted to let you guys know this.
I have a flight at that exact moment.
Let me know 10 minutes ago.
Well, hey, it's a good thing that it's Ask Us Anything Friday on the Halford & Brough show.
And if you've got any Ask Us Anythings, text them into the Dunbar Lumber text line at 650-650 The Bridge Street, Dunbar Lumber.
And Ladner has moved to progress way in tilbury's industrial
park more room more product more awesome details at dunbar lumber.com you know what is awesome
is someone texted in earlier in the show and said you guys don't have very good cfl coverage
you could do better and then adog replied hey we got moj on to talk about the Lions at 8 o'clock.
And then that happened.
Well, technically I was correct.
Yeah.
We did have Moj on, and he did talk about the Lions.
And to that listener, now you know it's gut check time for the Lions.
That's what Moj said.
It's gut check.
They've got to get a win.
They've got to go.
Boys, we've lost four in a row.
We were a little discombobulated last week when Nathan Moore came in
and I don't know if he should
have started. He looked a little out of sorts, though.
A lot of pressure on the Lions.
They've got to tackle better defense.
They've got to defense better.
That's what Mojo was going to say. And here's something
else Mojo was going to say. You've got to win the battles
in the trenches. Yes, he was going to say that.
It all starts in the trenches.
I will say to that listener, though,
the texter, we
did have three Lions guests this week.
We've had three, not one.
Are we counting? Not two, sure. Not one,
not two, but three Lions. Two and a half.
We do tend to talk about the Lions a lot.
We had the head coach and the defensive coordinator
on the show.
They've been one of the principal talking points
of this show for the last two or three weeks now.
Last week we were going
really hard on getting
more coverage.
It was fun.
Anyway, I didn't do the read
so I got to do some reads.
Okay, do them.

It's gut check time for the Lions, man.
Gut check time for the Lions.
We're just going to be talking that up.
In the trenches.
The checking of the guts.
They've lost four in a row.
They've lost four in a row.
I never would have known without that hit.
Ottawa playing well.
Yeah.
And they got them back to back.
They got a good defense in Ottawa.
They do. The Red Blacks. Yeah. Red Blacks them back to back. They got a good defense in Ottawa. Mm-hmm. They do.
The Red Blacks.
Yeah.
Red Blacks.
We are coming to you live
from the Kintec studio.
Kintec,
who says we don't have
good CFL analysis?
Right?
Like it's gut check time.
Kintec,
Canada's favorite
orthotics provider,
powered by thousands
of five-star Google reviews.
Sorfy,
what are you waiting for?
Kintec.
So we go to
the text line.
650-650.
We got a lot of time now.
Somebody texted and said they watched Moj's plane take off.
There he goes.
John in the Fort.
Okay, there's a couple real personal ones coming in here.
Yeah.
I like these ones.
John in the Fort.
I am a groomsman in a wedding on Sunday and the best man who was also supposed to MC just bailed on the wedding.
We need the whole story for that.
I need some story on that.
The groom, John continues, just asked me to fill in as MC as well as give a best man speech with a day and a half to prepare.
There were only three groomsmen, so it's me or the other guy.
Would you say yes?
And would you feel guilty for using chat GPT for your entire speech?
First of all, yes, I would say yes.
You have to do it.
You have to do it.
That's a horrible spot to be put in, though.
If you don't like public speaking, that's difficult because you got to emcee it.
And also you got to provide a best man speech.
Use whatever you have to use to get the speech done.
But hey, what have you learned about this show?
What do we do?
What do we do?
What do we do better than other shows that people might be surprised about?
Me and Halford.
You prepare.
We prep.
You got to be prepped. I was going to say talk over each other. Yeah, might be surprised about. Me and Halford. You prepare. We prep. You gotta be prepped.
I was gonna say talk over each other. Yeah, that too.
Yeah, and
if it's appropriate,
assuming this guy didn't bail
because of some tragedy,
really
make sure that everyone
knows that you are stepping
in as the hero in this
situation. Paint yourself as the hero of the wedding.
That's what I was going to say.
Like overshadow the bride if you have to.
Right?
I know it's her day, but it's also your day now because you are the hero of the wedding.
You're just Michael Scott-ing it at this point.
Just making it all about you.
That's what I was going to say there.
That's the best approach is like before the speech, just be like, hey, you know what?
I found out I was doing this a day and a half ago.
Yeah.
And then people are going to be like, wow, that was an awesome.
You can make jokes too.
Yeah.
You can be like, what's your name again?
Oh, man.
Right?
Think of all the content you have now because you were put in this situation.
You got to use the situation.
Okay.
This guy texted in and said, please don't read my name.
And you'll understand when we
get into the ask us anything.
Hey boys, I need some advice.
What would you do in this scenario?
I had a trip planned with the wife and kids nowhere far, just an hour or so south of the
border.
It was supposed to be our last trip to get away and relax before the summer ends.
My in-laws caught wind and figured out where we were staying and booked themselves at the same place and dates without asking if we minded.
They basically invited themselves into our vacation and let's just say it's not going to be as relaxing.
First question is, is it rude of me that I think that this is a bit much?
And secondly, how do I make the best of this time off?
First question, it is not rude of you to think this is a bit much? And secondly, how do I make the best of this time off? First question, it
is not rude of you to think this is
a bit much. That is a
bit much. That's a lot much.
Asking you?
Like, dude, you gotta,
the in-laws at least gotta give you the, like, hey,
we would also like to go on vacation.
Do you mind if we go with you? Because you gotta
be on your best behavior around the in-laws.
That's the thing, right?
I'm aware.
Yeah.
And to go to the length of-
I can't be myself.
And for them to research where they were going and to book on their own without asking, that's
just too far.
Are we being followed here?
The thought had to cross their minds.
At least they probably asked.
How do you make the best of this time off?
Tell your significant others.
You deal with that. I'm going golfing yeah well that was well maybe don't do that what i do that yeah what i was gonna say
is you you at least gotta like plan some things whether it's just by yourself or like with you
and your significant other to like that is separate from the in-laws yeah because then
then you got to be like well well, we had this planned,
and it's already booked.
We can't change it.
And we didn't know you were coming,
so we didn't book you on it.
So you've got to lose them?
Yeah, exactly.
Like you're being trailed by the police,
and you're like,
all right, I'm going to slow down
before this traffic light turns red.
Yeah.
Then I'm going to hit the gas through the red,
and then they're going to get caught in the red.
Exactly.
Like that's what you're going gonna do to your in-laws
don't mention that you're doing
it until like you're about to go
okay he's texting they need
Jim Rutherford to suss out who the leak is
in his family
totally who told the
in-laws where we were staying
who told Grammy where we're going
MKL texts in
I'm heading to Whistler for the weekend.
What's the most fun thing to do in Whistler?
I would also like this question answered because I'm going in a few weeks.
And what did I tell you to do?
You told me to get a massage.
Well, I said more than that.
You would know.
I was really suspicious.
You said, go get rubbed down.
I'm pretty sure is what you said.
And I'm going to be in Whistler that weekend too, so just so you know.
No, I would go to Skandinav.
Has anyone been there?
Do you even know?
You guys –
It's out of my price range, isn't it?
It's not out of your price range.
Sorry, where?
Skandinav.
Skandinav is a –
Spa.
A spa that has steam rooms, hot tubs, cold plunges.
And it was actually started by a couple of former NHL players,
Vinny Danfuss and Eric Desjardins.
Desjardins.
Do you remember that call from Bob Cole?
I'm aging myself again.
And that place is awesome and relaxing.
Whistler.
Whistler, my friend. Oh, okay. Skandinav in Whistler. Whistler, my friend.
Oh, okay.
Skandinav in Whistler.
Yeah.
Hmm.
You've got to tune in and out sometimes.
Yeah, I mean, I'm surprised that he's surprised
that I haven't heard of this place.
Right.
But at the same time, I'm not.
What are Vinnie Donfuss and Eric Desjardins
doing in Whistler?
Making money.
Making money.
They're all over the place.
It's not just in Whistler.
Are you telling me you haven't heard of Skandinav?
I got in trouble.
I am.
I actually got in
trouble at Scandinav
once because.
Towel fell off?
Okay.
Oops.
Is there a way not to
ask you?
Oh my goodness.
My towel fell off.
He's on a list.
So no, what I really,
so what I love about
Scandinav is that you have to be quiet
Talking is not encouraged
Because you're there to relax
So no Halford
No Halford would be like
The nightmare would be Halford watching an NBA game
In Skandinav
There it is, that's going in
Eat a bucket of chicken
You boys checking this game out?
So you have to be quiet But there's also a cold plunge.
So I don't know if you guys have ever done a cold plunge after hot tub and steam room
and sauna.
It's a little bit jarring.
So I got in trouble because I kind of yelped a little bit when I went in the cold plunge.
And then I was like, oh, my towel fell off again. And I was in the cold plunge and then I was like, oh, my towel fell off again.
And I was in the cold plunge over and was
like, oh, what's the pool?
I was in the pool.
So I am going to this place.
You should go. You're going to Scandinav?
I'm going to Scandinav. You gotta report back.
It's awesome. Say you know Brough. Yeah, yeah.
You go. No, they charged me more. That's the guy who kept losingNav. You got to report back. It's awesome. Say you know Bruff. Yeah, yeah. You get a discount. No, they charge me more.
That's the guy
that kept losing his towel.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know Towel Guy?
Okay, let's move on
before we get Josh canceled.
Well, how am I getting canceled?
Well, your trip might be.
I blame it on you.
Ask us anything rich.
What is the scariest movie
you think you have ever watched that is something
in that movie that was so scary that you get full body goosebumps and you feel the heart rate go up
a bit okay when i was a dog here we go living alone it a dog is like 10 15 years ago in north
van and living in the upper lynn valley and I watched The Conjuring, which I actually still really like as just a movie.
It's really, really good.
And I don't really find it so much scary now.
It was probably just the fact that I was not entirely sober.
I was by myself in a very dark basement suite late at night.
It was really rainy out, and I decided to put on The Conjuring, which I'd never seen before.
What kind of not sober were you?
You know I was partaking
And having a good evening
And enjoying myself
Like mushrooms or something?
No it's just having a good night
You were seeing things
In that basement
Anyways I watched the movie
And it
I slept with the light on
For I think three weeks
Really?
It just absolutely traumatized me
What was more scary?
But I've gone back
And watched it since
And it's not scared me nearly
I just really like watching it But that first watch Of The Conjuring man Really messed me up What was more scary? But I've gone back and watched it since and it's not scared me nearly as I just really like watching it but
that first watch of The Conjuring man really messed
me up. What's more scary? That
watch or when a bee flies into your apartment?
Well the bee of course. Unless I'm
watching The Conjuring while
the bee flies in.
Nightmare. This is my nightmare.
What was The Conjuring about again?
It's just like kind of an Amityville
horror thing where
a family of like seven,
like a husband and wife and I'm like five kids by this haunted, or they don't know it's
haunted, but by this house in the middle of nowhere and crazy stuff just starts happening.
And so it's a haunted house story more or less.
It's a lot like the Amityville horror, but also based on a true story, much like the
Amityville horror.
Like it actually was like in the papers and the press and stuff like that.
It's a really good movie.
It came out, I think, 2014, 2012 or something.
And a lot of people might make fun of me for this.
I thought The Ring was scary.
Oh, yeah.
That's a creepy one.
That was creepy.
Is that the TV one?
Yeah, for sure.
The TV one.
More recently, like Hereditary.
Yeah.
Well, The Ring was scary.
I was like, don't take TV from me.
Yeah.
This is all I have. This is all I have.
This is all I got.
White noise.
Watching Hereditary for the first time really messed me up as well.
That was a really scary one.
Mine, I don't really watch scary movies, but when I was a kid, for some reason, I was like, Child's Play was on.
Oh, yeah, yeah. You were scared of Chucky?
Dude.
I had the same thing with Freddy Krueger.
My sister had a birthday party.
They had Nightmare on Elm Street.
Little Jason walks in, sees Freddy Krueger right away, and I'm like, I won't be sleeping
for, well, the rest of my life.
And one of my parents' friends had a life-size Chucky doll.
It was very realistic.
And we went to their house.
I was like six or seven.
And they were chasing me around the house with the Chucky doll.
How old were you?
I was like six or seven, dude.
Were you crying?
Was it tears?
It was a horrible time.
It might be one of my earliest memories.
Do you remember when Chucky took the scalpel and cut someone's Achilles tendon?
I don't.
It's happened to Halford.
That's what he said.
Doll attack.
That's why he was limping around.
Doll attack.
That happened to me with Exorcist, Josh.
I saw that at far too young an age.
I don't really find it all that scary anymore.
Again, it's a great movie, but man, watching it, I think I was 12 when I saw it, and that
was a bad experience.
And you watch them now, though, and they're way less scary.
Yeah, I know.
I'm sure if I watched Child's Play, I'd be like, oh, this is hard.
For me, it was Jeepers Creepers was the movie.
You'd be like, this is Child's Play.
A lot of horror movies are like that, though, where they're so hokey and bad.
But you don't realize that when you're a kid.
When you're a kid and you see Freddy Krueger's face.
Oh, yeah.
And then the whole idea of that is terrifying, too.
It's like, wait a minute.
He gets me when I sleep?
Yeah.
Even the-
What?
You got to give it to Wes Craven, though.
That's a great concept.
Absolutely.
For a villain, they kill you in your sleep is just, like, such a good idea for a horror villain.
Okay, a lot of movie talk on the show.
Poltergeist, that was another one.
I saw Poltergeist way too young.
Yeah.
That one messed me up a bit.
Spike and South Van, Ask Us Anything.
That was a good movie.
With Coach.
Poltergeist, oh, it was great.
It was a Steven Spielberg movie
that was not a Steven Spielberg movie.
He didn't say he directed it, even though he did.
Spike and South Van, ask us anything.
If you were making a gangster crossover movie,
a la Avengers-style meetup,
which characters would you want to see together?
Vito Corleone, Tommy DeVito, and Henry Hill
could band together to take down the Medellin cartel.
Some suspension of disbelief is required.
So I would want the hotheads together.
Like who are the best gangster hotheads?
So that I think that would start with Sonny Corleone.
And you would also have Tony Montana,
although Scarface was overrated.
When Tony got into the white stuff,
he got a little aggressive.
And then maybe the greatest hothead gangster of them all,
Nicky Santoro from Casino played by Joe Pesci.
And if you had them all on, and it's a road trip movie.
It's a comedy.
Oh.
There's just something fun out there.
Yeah.
It's a road trip movie.
Like Midnight Run kind of deal?
Yeah.
Or they're going to like Wally World or something like that.
There you go.
And things happen along the way.
That would be my crossover.
National Gangsters Family Vacation?
Yeah.
Are you a big gangster movie guy?
I'm not a big gangster movie guy.
I was trying to stay out of it.
Is this a generational thing?
I think so.
They don't really make much anymore, I assume.
Yeah.
At least they don't cross my radar.
I've watched the one notable one I've watched.
What was the last good gangster movie?
The Departed?
That's a great one.
Honestly, my favorite gangster anything is The Sopranos.
I think it's better than any of the gangster films.
Sopranos to me is the peak.
It's funny, man. I never got into it.
Really? It's my biggest disagreement
with Halford. Did you try?
I tried hard. Because, man, it's like
one of the greatest shows ever made.
I never felt anything for him.
You're not really supposed to.
You're not supposed to feel anything for any of them.
You're supposed to feel
You end up rooting for them
At the end of the day
That's what's so fascinating
About it
Yeah
I never rooted for him
I never rooted for him
Right
Like I was rooting for
I was rooting for
Michael Corleone
You know
Even though he's
I don't know if you know this
He did some bad stuff
Yeah he wasn't a great guy
Yeah
Well I mean hey
It's not for everyone I guess
No but it is
But what I don't get Mostly everyone except Ruff It is for, I mean, hey, it's not for everyone, I guess. No, but it is. But what I don't get is like-
Mostly everyone except Ruff.
It is for everyone.
I mean, it's very popular.
There's not many people that have been like, you know, I couldn't get into it.
Yeah.
But I could get-
And I'm not a guy that doesn't like get into shows.
I got-
Like, Halford still watches The Wire.
Like, he doesn't watch anything new.
See, that's one-
Well, I like it and I've seen it a couple times.
I loved The Wire.
I don't like The Wire as much as most people.
