Starting point is 00:01:35 Dunbarlumber.com. You might be wondering, Josh, why are you calling Vancouver the cove? That's silly. Well, Major League Soccer did for some reason. I don't know where they heard that. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. But in their announcement and their hype tweet of the Vancouver Whitecaps officially getting Thomas Mueller, they put the cove in there.
Starting point is 00:01:56 You know it was just some intern trying to sound cool probably. They were so giddy with excitement, guys, that they're like, oh, what's the nickname for Vancouver? The cove makes sense. Second time I've actually heard that, you know, and it's always white caps related. Eric Hurtado, former player for the white caps, referred to the city as the cove way back when.
Starting point is 00:02:12 So maybe Eric Hurtado is running the social media for Major League Soccer. Maybe it's just an American thing. Americans think we're called the cove. We all been to the cove lately? That's what's going on. So that's the big story for today. Coming up on the show, we're going to speak to Arda O'Call at 630 about hockey and we'll get into some of the offseason
Starting point is 00:02:32 storylines and we do have a topic for today which teams around the NHL are you looking at as regression candidates teams that could be underwhelming and we'll talk to Arda about that and do any trades open up if there are any underwhelming teams at 7 o'clock we're going to talk to Adnan Verk from Moby Network and we'll talk about The Jay's just demolishing the Colorado Rockies. I was kind of sad, wasn't it? It was a little sad. It was like, especially towards the end.
Starting point is 00:03:05 It was just like, oh, okay, okay. They're the Rockies. You can just score 16 runs. It's okay. But they score 20. Not a Blue Jays fan, so I tuned out when it was like getting embarrassing because I felt like secondhand embarrassment. You guys didn't tune out, right?
Starting point is 00:03:19 No, I watched every run, and it was one. I actually went for a nap when it was 10-1 in the 8th, and then I woke up, and it was 20, and I said, okay. That's too many runs. They just kept going, didn't they? They did just keep going. So we'll talk to Adnan about that. What's going on with the Yankees?
Starting point is 00:03:34 What's going on with the Mariners, the Red Sox, all of those teams that are making headlines in Major League Baseball at 730. We'll get back into the Mueller talk with Manuel Beth, who's been all over the story. Thomas Mueller coming to the White Caps. We'll do that at 730. And then at 8, it's the Moj, but it's a Thursday. day, because if I heard correctly on the show last week, he is boarding a flight tomorrow at 8.
Starting point is 00:04:03 So he's on today to tee up the Thai cats and lions. Rematch as the lions look to get back in the wind column. Can't wait. Never actually interviewed the Moge. Whoa. I'm usually at, like, I talk to him at the rink all the time, but as far as in any interviews confirmed, this is the first time I'm ever going to be able to say Spolumbos. Yes, directly to him on the radio. Talk about it.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Wow. Yeah, so that's at 8, working in reverse. That's at 8, Manuel Veth at 7.30 at 7, Adnan Verk, and at 630. Arda O'Cal, that's what's happening on the show. Laddie, let's tell everybody what happened. Hey, did you guys see the game last night? No. No.
Starting point is 00:04:43 What happened? I missed all the action because I was. We know how busy your life can be. What happened? You missed that? What happened? What happened is brought to you by the BC Construction Safety, Alliance making safety simpler by giving construction companies the best in tools, resources,
Starting point is 00:05:02 and safety training. Visit BCCSA.com.C.a. The big story, we were talking about it yesterday and we're like, wow, it's weird that it hasn't been made official yet. And then minutes after the show ended, it was teased and essentially made official. It's because we bullied them. They were listening. Yeah, they were like, oh, we'll put all these content out. We forgot about the Schuster announcement. This morning show was really on our ass about this. Yeah. Nobody. else cares the morning show though that's what did it. The morning shows harassing us so that's signed Thomas Mueller. Yes and it was effective
Starting point is 00:05:33 they did do it. Thomas Mueller is officially a Vancouver White Cap I think clearly undoubtedly the biggest signing in their franchise history and I think you can make a very very good argument probably the right argument that this is the
Starting point is 00:05:49 biggest athletic signing in the Cove's history. From a global perspective and we promise we were going to retire the coup after today. I'm so into it now. Today maybe we'll give it a run, but 100% when you talk about global recognition, the amount of trophies, goals, trophies won, goals he scored, and not only at the club level, but what he's been able to do with Germany, Thomas Mulek coming to Vancouver is a huge deal. This is a player that is going to bring, I think, a lot on the
Starting point is 00:06:22 pitch. And of course, when you're 35 years old, you're not the guy that you were 10 years ago. He's not maybe going to high press like he did, you know, in his prime with Byron Munich and really pressure defenders and midfielders to get the ball out. But at the same time, you know, as he's gotten older, he's become, I think, more a patient player. This is a playmaker in addition to being a goal score. You're going to have, you know, a player that makes everybody else around him better. And that is rare because people listen to the show and listen to the station are probably like,
Starting point is 00:06:51 yeah, we've heard that a hundred times. But the reality is designated players in MLM. less, do not mold into a team. It's usually the other way around where you have to alter your team to fit these guys in. Mueller's not that type of player, where he's going to go into a winning team and say, all right, here are some gaps, maybe. Here's how I can make you better. And that's why this signing is so big, because you're going to a good team.
Starting point is 00:07:17 You're getting a real quality player, even at his age now. And his style fits the white caps perfectly fine. And guess what? from a marketing perspective, it's a pretty significant ad as well because now the White Caps brand is going global when sure the Davies sale had a little bit of help in that regard. Yeah. But this is taking it to the next level. Yeah, it's different, right?
Starting point is 00:07:39 It's like, well, he kind of grew up here in terms of his on, for Davies, his on-field game kind of grew up here. And then he left like we're kind of used to seen in Major League Soccer. It's different when someone come as has had all the success that Mueller, has had and then comes over and you're like, we know what this guy is and we know how impactful and his legacy and all of that. It is crazy to think of how this year has kind of gone for the white caps to like get to this point when you look back at where the season kind of started and we were talking about on the station like man, could this team be potentially relocated at some
Starting point is 00:08:20 point? They got to figure the stadium situation out. Now obviously that's still an issue. the stadium situation still has to be figured out. But, and then you kind of look at where things have gone for the team over the season. They are first in, when it comes to points per game in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer, they played really well. They've been exciting. They've changed their coach and that was potentially an issue and it's worked out really well. And now you sign Thomas Mueller.
Starting point is 00:08:48 It's like, things have gone so unexpectedly well for the Vancouver White Caps, especially considering where things started at the beginning of the season. Yeah, this is a story, I think going back two to three years. It wasn't a fun story to talk about in Vancouver Radio, right? When you talked about, you know, what the white caps were doing on the pitch and off the pitch. But I think a lot of credit has to go to actual Schuster, who was on the people show yesterday, he talked about the process of signing Thomas Mueller. And there was a methodical approach.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Like having that Bundesliga experience that Schuster had, you know, being on the management side of those clubs, he used that to his full advantage in this negotiation and even admitted that maybe, you know, didn't think they had much of a chance early on. But once the conversation started, there was a real, okay, we got this. We're going to take our shot. And I think that has to be credit has to be given to Schuster. Credit has to be given to the club because a deal like this is not cheap in the long term either. And it's a real signal of intent by the club to say if we have an opportunity right now if this is a top two team
Starting point is 00:09:54 a top team in the West buy points per game you gotta take advantage of it so there may be an uncertain future long term of course but in the short term you know what helps bringing stars into a winning team and creating something that I think
Starting point is 00:10:09 has been really missing from the White Caps experience in the city since they got into the MLS that was a real positive experience something you can be so optimistic about and just having a winning product that is something that they can build off of this and maybe it turns into something
Starting point is 00:10:28 you're talking about the long term, the stadium and all that. This short term story, whether it's a couple of years, a good story can lead to ultimate success, but you have to start with this. And I think there's a great starting point. It definitely is.
Starting point is 00:10:41 And yeah, we'll see what kind of impact it has on kind of the city as a whole because I do think a lot of the conversation around the white caps it comes back to like okay how can they get the the casual fans on board and i do think the the way they've been playing this year has gone a long way i i usually factor myself into the the casual fan perspective we're a good actually mix here because i'm a hardcore soccer guy and you're the casual fan so yes and so usually i just use myself as the barometer for like oh is this white cap stuff like newsworthy enough to get the attention of a casual fan and when i heard that
Starting point is 00:11:15 they were getting thomas muller i was like no they're not because i've heard of him and they're the Vancouver Whitecaps. But obviously it happens and now it's like, hey, if I've heard of a player and I can look at like, hey, what he's been able to do and the fact that he's coming to Vancouver, I do think that's going to have a really big impact on trying to bring casual fans
Starting point is 00:11:34 and more people into BC plays. A question for Randy, since you're a hardcore soccer guy, a football guy, if you will. Yes, please. Please refer to as football. Football. Since Mueller is coming to Vancouver, sorry, the Cove. Since he's coming to the coup from a much better league, even though he's older,
Starting point is 00:11:53 is he going to, because he's going to a lower-end league, would you expect him to be more dominant than he is currently, or had been, because of the fact that he's going to be playing in the MLS? No, no offense to the MLS, but it's just a lower-end league, so he'll be more dominant. Is that a fair statement, or will he still have a harder time because of his age? Well, we have to think of two things, right? Like, one, he was not at his peak when he left Byron. So I think we have to understand that. You got like one goal, right?
Starting point is 00:12:17 Yeah, last year he played in 30 plus games, but his contributions, and remember, Byron's like a top five club in the world. Yeah. Highly competitive. Well, that's why I'm curious to see, like, because obviously the MLS is not. Yeah, so he's going to raise the bar, but I think anybody that's watching highlights from the 2014 World Cup expecting him to be that player, he's not that player. So you want to make sure that you have realistic expectations.
Starting point is 00:12:39 He's still going to raise the bar. He's still going to be, you know, a player that manipulates the pitch and makes, you know, those wingers, whether it's the new sign in Kenji Cabrera or. or some of those other players on the white caps better. So if we're looking for, oh, is he going to get, you know, Lionel Messi three goals in the debut? He's not necessarily that player.
Starting point is 00:12:57 He is dangerous. But he is going to raise the bar. So, like, I look at this signing. And I think with, you know, with Mueller, part of it's going to be being a little patient because the MLS game is different. It is, you know, a little bit more physical. It's a little bit more choppy at times.
Starting point is 00:13:13 So for European players making that switch, it does take a couple of weeks to get used to a the pace the style of play for some it's with Europe you've got like the ball is just constantly moving the pace is different with the ball in MLS it's not to the same degree so I think even though we're going to want immediate results
Starting point is 00:13:34 and you might get them it's still going to take a while for him to get used to the style of play is the pitch different too well there's always grass in Europe so that I'm saying yeah because I know some Euro guys struggle with that like is that a thing I'll give you an example Kenny Miller when he signed with the Vancouver White Caps, different pitch back then. They've upgraded it, but the way that the ball bounced off the pitch was challenging for him, because you think off grass, the ball kind of dies quicker, where it was bouncing off the pitch at BC Place, and you could tell that, like, a guy that's played at a very high level was struggling
Starting point is 00:14:05 with that. Little things like that, and the pitch is much better at BC Place, but even little things like that, it takes time to get used to. Okay, so talking about a skill set, Axel Schuster was on the People Show with Satyar Shah and Bick Nazar yesterday and he did mention he was talking about the skill set that shoes or not Schuster
Starting point is 00:14:27 Schuster has a skill set. He's got a good skill set. He's got a negotiation. He's not bad. Really good. He'll be playing really good. Yeah. Muler, the skill set that Mueller will bring to the white caps. Here's Schuster on the people show yesterday. There are two parts to it. The first is
Starting point is 00:14:41 obviously his individual skill set this understanding for space, for how to create threat, how to find the spaces, how to give spaces for his teammates. He has a special title in the world of soccer that actually calls him the space interpreter, Raumdeuter in German. So that's the one thing. He's super dangerous in the final third. The other thing is he was and has always been a leader and somebody who is speaking on the pitch, who is helping his teammates, somebody who makes the players around him better the way he plays. So for us, not only getting a player who can help us in the final third, finding goals, scoring goals, finding spaces, also somebody who can take leadership and
Starting point is 00:15:31 is not shy of being a leader and helping the players around him to be better, that's important for us as an organization that also relies on a lot of young, top talented players. Ram Doiter. Am I saying it right? I don't know. Rom deuter. Oh, okay. I feel like I was close. I went to Germany for two weeks.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Rom deuter. There is. Yeah, that sounded right. You've got the extra. I can't get there. Yeah, I can't commit that hard. You've watched a lot of those Simpsons episodes where the Germans take over the plant. Well, just the big young boys guy.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Switzerland, but same. That was a, that's okay. Axel Schuster, you can hear the full interview on the People Show podcast feed. But the one thing I am interested in. too because we talk about like hey yeah he is 35 who knows what he's going to be able to bring on the pitch though we do expect him to still be pretty valuable to the white caps i do wonder about his off field impact as well especially on a team that is pretty young and hasn't really had anyone like this around them before it seems like something that could have a lasting impact
Starting point is 00:16:37 moving forward as well yeah one of the things about muler that is really interesting over the last 10 years is that he's actually, first of all, his teammates never say anything bad about him. And he relates to the younger teammates better. Like a lot of his social media had to, you know, do with younger players, like whether it was Alfonso Davies or go through, you know, Serge Nabri, who's a little bit older now at Bayern Munich. But there were involvement in just having, having that buzz around, you know, a younger player. So I'm looking at players like Jaden Nelson, Jivan Bedwal, you know, you go up and down that list of Ali Ahmed, who these guys are going to benefit from it. So if I'm in that,
Starting point is 00:17:11 room right now. I'm absolutely ecstatic that you've got A, one of the best players in European football coming into your locker room but the amount of knowledge and like the wealth of experience that he brings to that room is going to elevate them too. There's a certain culture
Starting point is 00:17:27 setting that's going to be going on with the signing that I don't think you can put a value on guys and that's something that's going to be really important for the white caps because they haven't really had that before. Even when they had skilled players, they never really had guys that set the tone. This is the white cap standard.
Starting point is 00:17:43 This is what you have to do. Mueller can bring that because he is that type of personality. He's relatable. He's not a hard ass. But like there's a certain level of professionalism you have to bring when you are in a team with them. And if that translates over to the MLS, I think that entire locker room is going to benefit. So Schuster did mention as well that Mueller will travel to Vancouver on Wednesday, land on Thursday. And then his debut for the Vancouver Whitecaps will be August 17th.
Starting point is 00:18:11 10 days from now against the Houston Dynamo and tickets are very much still available. I got mine last week. So go scoop them up before they're gone because I do think it'll be a, it'll be a fun game. You'll be there. It'll be a fun game to be like, I was there with Randy Jandoe watching Thomas Muller. By the way, Thomas Moodler played as well. Yeah, less important. Randy was there.
Starting point is 00:18:35 I will be there because I'm a soccer fan. And now the question is how many casual fans like you, Josh, are going to end up going to. I actually legitimately very much want to go, but we will see, we'll see if I can. Do you think they'll sell out? I hope so. I feel like they should sell out. Is Mueller enough of a draw that they will?
Starting point is 00:18:52 They should. They should, because this is, you know, I'm going to borrow a phrase from the Toronto FC. It is a bloody big deal. No offense to Jermaine Defoe and that failure of signing. This is something that, like, it should get a lot of buzz. And if we look at the average attendance for the white caps this year, I believe I saw it online of being around 19 to 20,000 people.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Like the rest of the way here, I'd like to see 30, 35. I mean, it's crazy how many international soccer analysts you just see on your feed popping up covering the white caps, which you just never see before. It's like, what are you guys doing? They probably didn't even realize the white cabs existed until like a week ago. And now you see like all these like news services from around the world are covering the story. So obviously there's interest there. And they're all calling it the coove and we're like, no, stop.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Yeah, it's gotten out of hand. But yeah, so that's happening. August 17th, the debut for Thomas Mueller. Quickly, before we hit the break, a very big story as well. Vicki and Boko, it was in doubt at times yesterday. It felt like, especially after the first set, lost 6'1, that she might be on the brink of elimination. Great story that maybe would have had a, not ideal end,
Starting point is 00:20:05 but still would have been a great story. And she said, the show goes on. The story goes on. She beat Elena Verbacna in three sets, and it came down to the wire in the semis. And Boko will move on to the final to face Naomi Osaka. The one word that comes to mind for her is resilient, right? Like, she's down 5'3 in that final set.
Starting point is 00:20:30 It looks like it's over. She double faults, and you're like, all right, good run, kid. Better luck next year. You have built a solid foundation. you're going to be a top 50 player, and then she turns a tide yet again. Yeah. She even fell. Remember, there was potential injury there. There was an injury concern.
Starting point is 00:20:46 There was numbness in her hand after she fell, all of that. Doesn't matter. And I think a lot of praise for Mbop, sorry, Mboko, excuse me, for just the way she's been able to know every match, just find a solution, right? Not get to, yeah, there's a little bit of motion in yesterday's match. You could see her maybe kind of smash the racket against her foot a couple of times. You could see the nerves were there, but you're 18. That's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:21:12 On the other side, her competitor, like, there's a couple overhead smashes that were free. Yeah. And straight into the net. So it's one thing to actually get those opportunities. You've got to take advantage of them. And, you know, Vicki did exactly that. And now it sets up a final, which is actually, if you're the organizers for the National Bank Open, Josh, I think you're really happy because you've got the local kid. And you've got a great comeback story in Naomi Osaka.
Starting point is 00:21:37 which is going to get viewers too. So like this in a lot of ways is like a ratings bonanza for Sportsnet, right? It's our company, of course. We're going to be happy. Go Sportsnet. Today. But it's a good storyline heading into this. Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:21:53 And it's, again, there were concerns that it was like, hey, you know what? Maybe it's not going to work out for her, but she pulled through. It was a dramatic semifinal for her. And yeah, you mentioned the first. final goes today. It is at three o'clock. Once again, there's no Jay's games or anything else you want to watch. If you are a local sports fan, if you're a Mariners fan, I don't think they play today either. I forgot to check their schedule. Maybe they do. But Vicki and Boko, three o'clock, taken on Naomi Osaka at center court in Montreal. The Mariners do play today. White Sox.
Starting point is 00:22:31 At what time? One 10. Ah, you know what? Dip out of it early. It's fine. Four innings is good enough. Yeah, it's the Mariners and the White Sox. The White Sox are probably going to lose. Now that I've said it out loud, they probably won't, but regardless. Okay, that's a good segue into our next topic. We got a minute left here to talk about the Blue Jays. They beat the Rockies 20 to 1 yesterday. They outscored them 45 to 6 in the series.
Starting point is 00:22:58 They out hit them 63 to 20 in the three games. And that sets a record for most hits, by any team in Major League Baseball history in a three-game series was 63. The Rockies are so bad. That's the moral of this story. All of those stats you listed offer great for the Blue Jays and Blue Jays fans.
Starting point is 00:23:21 And seeing those tweets, I was like, you know what? You do you, Blue Jays fans. Have a moment. You have that moment. You've earned it. But how much does you really earn it? That Rockies team is trash. They are god-awful.
Starting point is 00:23:34 They make you wonder about like, The best AAA team, could they beat the best AAA team right now? Like, I valid question. It would be close? You know, we have that question about, oh, the Nick Sabin era, Alabama, would they beat the worst team in the NFL? I want to have that conversation about the Rockies right now because you said it. Outscored 45 to 6 in three games. It was bad enough heading into yesterday's game.
Starting point is 00:23:59 And then what happened yesterday? And at some point, if you're the manager, do you just say, okay, yeah, we can use an outfield player. We can do all of this. But at some point, we need to save some pride for our team. Like, can we just, like, if you're the manager, do you not pull the plug on that strategy at some point? Well, they have an interim manager right now. He's not doing a great job of keeping the job.
Starting point is 00:24:18 No shot there. Yeah. It's, yeah, it was a really good series for the Blue Jays, really bad series for the Colorado Rockies and the Blue Jays run differential, which has been a topic of conversation all season. All of a sudden doesn't look too bad. It's a plus 55, doing pretty good. Not as good as the Yankees and Red Sox. It's better than it was.
Starting point is 00:24:37 It's getting there. We can we calm Michael K down a little bit. Yeah. Okay. The Yankees were plus one in their differential yesterday. Okay, they're good. They won one. They did win.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Well done, Yankees. Four straight innings of no runs to end the game. We'll take it. We'll take it. Wow. Okay, so the Blue Jays, like I said, they are off today. They're taking on the Dodgers tomorrow for the start of a three game series in L.A., which will obviously be a much bigger test for the Jays.

Starting point is 00:26:59 Moge, what's the future like? What was that? What's the future like? Do you guys have flying cars over there yet? Hopefully the lives come out of this place with a win tomorrow. Or tonight, I should say, come back tomorrow with a win. Hopefully. Hopefully they come out of the buy, rejuvenated.
Starting point is 00:27:15 And they went in on a bit of a losing skid, I guess. How badly did this team need that buy? I think it needed it even from a mental and physical standpoint, given the fact that the last team in the CFL to get a buy. some teams that already had two buys and the lines had none. So just the chance to reset, rejuvenate, get guys healed up a little bit and hopefully come back. And this is a team that, you know, just talking to some of the players yesterday,
Starting point is 00:27:47 they're not too happy with the way things transpired in that last game against Hamilton, on defense, of course, surrendering that lead with less than three minutes left to go. so I think they're motivated. I think the offense also looks at the fact that they had an opportunity to, as good as they played, and they played good enough to win, but they had an opportunity to seal the deal at the end of the game by driving the football, and they have a two-and-out. So there's motivation there, and then, of course, the special teams.
Starting point is 00:28:19 I think their coverage unit's got to be a lot better, particularly the kickoff coverage unit, I should say more so than their punt coverage unit, but it's a motivated team, plus the fact that, You know, you're staring at three and six if you lose this game. So four and five sounds a hell of a lot better than three and six. So there's a sense of urgency with this team. Yeah, you mentioned heading into the by week with a bit of a gut punch there. That's a tough way to lose that game.
Starting point is 00:28:44 And the defense got a lot of the focus, especially late in the game on the winning drive. What kind of changes can we expect to see? Let's start with the secondary because on that, you know, that game-winning touchdown, there was a fair bit of confusion there. Yeah, well, they've made some personnel changes in the secondary, so the boundary corner still remains Gary Peters, but Robert Carter Jr., who is playing field corner, the guy with the outstanding one-head to catch,
Starting point is 00:29:09 he's moved to half on the boundary side. Christophe, Boy, you remains your safety, and then on the field side, they've moved Ronald Kent from half-back to corner, and Deonté Williams goes from his nickel position to half, and then Patrice René is coming in to play the nickel position. So they've made some changes, on defense, clearly they
Starting point is 00:29:29 feel that this is a better alignment for what Hamilton presents on offense. And also I think you're going to see a defense that's going to play a little bit more aggressively. And what I mean by that is just even in the play column, I think the lions were a little too passive in the last three,
Starting point is 00:29:45 three and a half minutes of the game. You know, people talked about the fact that, well, you know, it worked for whatever, 57 minutes. Well, there's a couple of things there. Number one, the urgency isn't there with the game on the line in those first 57 minutes. And I think the other thing, too, is the fact that I think the field position might have
Starting point is 00:30:02 some of the numbers in the sense that, you know, he only, they said, well, he only threw for 230, 240 yards, whatever the number was prior to the final three minutes. Well, they were getting the ball on their own 50-yard line half the time, right? So you don't need to put up monster numbers to put up points. I look at, you know, to me and more telling sad as so many times they punt it. And I think they only punt it three times in that game. So to me, that's a bigger thing to look at them, say, totally yardage, which, of course, plays a role. But I think this is a team that learned from its mistakes.
Starting point is 00:30:35 And I think one of the big things, too, is the fact that, hey, if you want to kill a snake, cut off the hat, right? And, you know, they were so focused on Kenny Lawler, they kind of forgot about the guy that delivers the football. And that's the boy Levi-Mitchell. And you saw the same thing in Edmonton last week. I mean, Keandre Smith had a monster game against the Lions. He had a monster game against the Edmonton Elks. So if you're going into this game I don't think the focus should be on any receiver
Starting point is 00:30:58 I think the focus should be on stopping and doing things to disrupt Bolivai Mitchell And was that simply down to just having the wrong scheme You mentioned focusing on Lawler Was that, does that come down to coaching at that point Where you're just saying all right we got to reshift the focus And change the scheme No, I think it's just one of the factors
Starting point is 00:31:17 It comes into play I mean, you know, as much as people want to blame the secondary They've got to get a pass rush in or later I mean, the last two weeks, Trevor Harris and Beau Levi-Metchel could have had, like, you know, they could have had a three-course meal back there half the time. They've got to get some pressure to the quarterback. They've got to disrupt the quarterback, get him off his mark, make him feel uncomfortable. Giulio Caravetta always says about this internal clock in your head as a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:31:41 When you're under pressure all the time, the game is, it speeds up for you in a sense, that, you know, you believe you only have so much time to get rid of the football. The Lions haven't done that the last two weeks, and it's something that they have to, do if they want to have some success on defense. Is that a personnel thing? Like do they have the talent to effectively get into the backfield and rush the quarterback? Well, I think they do.
Starting point is 00:32:03 I mean, you look at Matthew Betts. He's one of the league leaders and pressures. So they've got to get him going against. Tony Tui Hemma missed the first two games of the season. And I think he's still trying to get up the speed. And he was among the club leaders in sacks last year. Interior-wise, Dwayne Hendricks had a couple. I think he had three sacks and was leading the team in
Starting point is 00:32:22 Saxon was up there in the league leaders and then he got hurt for a couple of weeks so he's back so you know try to get him up to speed so that's where I think the bye week might have some of these guys especially the linemen who to have a tendency to get worn down a little bit but we'll see it we're going to see tonight when they play hamilton at tim horton's field but to me that's one of the big keys in this game they've got to get a pass rush and I do believe that they have the talent to do it one way to get rid of that bad taste in the mouth from the last losses go back at that same team and then take it to him but you know what Hamilton's been able to do.
Starting point is 00:32:54 They're seeking their seven straight victory. And Bo Levi Mitchell, you mentioned him. Like, he's taking the league by storm again. What's the most impressive thing about his play right now? The way he's reinvented himself. And what I mean by that, this is a quarterback who was benched by head coach Scott Milanovic last year. Like, they said, no, we're going to go with Taylor Powell.
Starting point is 00:33:16 And, you know, Bo Levi kind of really reinvented himself in terms of his mechanics. And just being a little bit more, I guess, sound foundationally when he's throwing the football. His feet are in a way better shape when he's throwing the ball. He's not like throwing off balance. He's not throwing off his back foot. And the other thing, too, is, you know, just listening to some of the comments during a broadcast, Bull Levi's kind of changed his approach.
Starting point is 00:33:42 He said, you know, he used to go to the mall or play golf when he had some free time. Now it's just going home and just chilling and relaxing. As you get older, you do have to change. change your approach because your body's different. Your body's different from when you're 32 than when you're 21. So you've got to do things differently and Bo Levi-Mitchell is adopted. Like we said, the lines coming off a bye week. What was offensive lineman Andrew Pearson up to over the by?
Starting point is 00:34:09 Oh, so this is a good story. So Andrew Pearson goes to Stefino during the by week and he brings his girlfriend along with him, right? Unbeknownst to his girlfriend, Andrew Pearson, is going to propose. Okay. So, Berent Defino, he's out for dinner, and he's got this walk planned along the beach. And he's got the photographer, like on standby, the photographer's going to show up, you know, take a picture from an angle or whatever, like when he goes down to a knee and, you know, does the whole nine yards. So dinner, and all of a sudden they get, everybody's
Starting point is 00:34:48 getting tsunami warnings on their phones, right? Right. Oh, no. The tsunami, remember, And they had the tsunami warnings and the tsunami advisories and all that. Yeah. So now he's trying to figure out, should we still go along with this? And, you know, now he's texting the photographer while he's at dinner with his girlfriend. He's trying to figure this out. When the photographer's, nah, if the tsunami hits, it's going to hit 1130. You have like a three-hour window, so you're still good.
Starting point is 00:35:12 So then he convinces his girlfriend to go for a walk along the beach despite the fact that, you know, everyone's talking about this incoming tsunami. And she goes, do you think this is really? smart. Oh, we'll be good. We'll be fine. It'll be all good. So anyway, he somehow managed to convince her to go for a walk along the beach. They did. They got the picture taken, no tsunami, so everything
Starting point is 00:35:32 ended happily. But, man, you talk, I mean, that's probably one of the most nervous things a guy can go through is that whole thing about proposing and making sure everything's all right, especially if you've got a photographer involved, and now you have to throw a tsunami warning into the mix to kind of add a little bit more anxiety. Yeah, what a wild
Starting point is 00:35:48 ride, though, because I'm sure the fiance now is probably like, I don't trust this guy's judgment and then like 10 minutes later you're like I love this guy yeah talk about hey talk about a commitment level right so it was kind of a funny story he was telling me he was just talking about how nervous he was and how crazy it was and you know he's the he's like he was trying to keep everything under wraps during dinner and you know he's going back and forth with the photographer and trying to make sure that you know and she's going no it's going to be fine and all that so yeah it was it was kind of a funny story with and defedo and the whole proposal thing uh before we let you go
Starting point is 00:36:21 How are the sights and sounds of Hamilton? Discovered a new place in Hamilton. Laddie would probably be impressed with this. Went to Confederation Beach Park last night. And went to a Greek restaurant called Barangas. And had a great meal. Yeah. Have you been there?
Starting point is 00:36:40 I've driven by it. I've never gone into Barangas. Okay. Yeah. So it was a part of Hamilton that I've never seen. Watch technically it's not Hamilton. It's Stony Creek. But it was pretty cool, being just on the water.
Starting point is 00:36:51 you know, I think is I don't realize how big freaking Lake Ontario is. Oh, my God. Like, we couldn't even see Toronto last night due to the cloud cover, but by the end of the night, it kind of lifted a little bit, and you could see just, you know, the outline of the city, like barely. But, man, Lake Ontario, you're like, these great lakes, man. They're no joke. They're big, right?
Starting point is 00:37:10 So it's, we had a nice time last night, but it was really nice going down to Barangas on the beach and just walk it around and just kind of seeing the sights and sounds down there. So another part of the area, and by the way, Stony Creek, right next to Grimsby. Which former Connect players from Grimsby? Jandeepe, you should know that. That's Kevin B.XA is going to be, the pride of Grimsby, him and his father, Al B.XA.
Starting point is 00:37:34 Randeep, there you go, you got it. It's Kevin B.XA, Vancouver Connect from Grimsby. So right next door. So that restaurant you mentioned in Stony Creek is going to get a lot of business, though, because I was in Calgary a couple of weeks ago, Moj, and I walked by Spolumbos. and in my mind, it was your voice saying Spolumbo's over and over. I felt like, you know, basically your recommendation made me go there, made me go in that general area.
Starting point is 00:37:59 So it works, I'm telling you. Did you, would you get at Spolombos? You get Mama's mate Logan? No, I couldn't. I went on a Sunday. I went too late, unfortunately, so I walked by it. I have to go, I have to go earlier next time. What do you have?
Starting point is 00:38:11 I didn't have anything. They were closed, Moge. Oh, they were closed? Yeah. Oh, my God. Yeah, so I have to go back to Calgary. Oh, that's brutal I feel bad for you
Starting point is 00:38:21 Like you're right there And you didn't have any of the great food That they have next time So close So close So close So close Moge appreciate you taking the time
Starting point is 00:38:28 Enjoy the game tonight Okay take care guys All right There is Bob the Moge Marjanovich Part of the BC Lions Broadcast team And he is a presentation He was brought to you
Starting point is 00:38:39 Sorry by the Clayton Public House Your Home of Football Every game day Catch all the action On 15 screens and two giant projectors. Hamilton. Moge loves Hamilton.
Starting point is 00:38:53 I love the fact that he's like a big Hamilton guy. It makes me very happy. Warm's your heart? Yeah, warms my heart. Never been there. Nor have I. You've never been to Hamilton? I think I drove by once.
Starting point is 00:39:01 You say that like Hamilton's the destination. I drove by on one of my road trips. As most people do, yeah. Yeah, I didn't think, didn't look back twice. There are nice pockets of Hamilton. I'll put that. And Moge found one with Confederation. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:16 All right. If I ever go. You're going to Confederation Beach Park. I will ask for Laddie's recommendations, but that's a short list, but there'll be some key things to hit. That's a massive if. Ticast game is a big one. It's really all they've got. All right.
Starting point is 00:39:31 Tim Horton's field. Hey, the first ever Tim Hortons also in Hamilton. Is it? Yeah. Oh, didn't know that. There you go. Okay. So they got two things.
Starting point is 00:39:39 Good for them. So, yeah, the BC Lions taking on the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Once again, it is today at 4.30, so we're talking about viewing schedules. The Mboko final match is at 3 o'clock, so maybe you can pivot to the Lions after Mboko wins in Montreal. Although the men's final is also going on, right, I think, 430. So if you want to watch, Elias Pedersen's good friend, Ben Shelton, remember, they did that video together when the, was it the Rod Laver Cup was in Vancouver? And they had that five minutes of just hanging out together. Weird times.
Starting point is 00:40:19 It was weird times. But if you want to watch, apparently, I'm going to say it, Alias Patterson's good friend, Ben Shelton. Good friend. They're probably hanging out. Elias Patterson might be in Toronto. He's not. He's doing interviews in Sweden, taking pictures, and everybody's like,
Starting point is 00:40:33 ah, is he married? What happened? I'm glad we don't know. I'm glad he is just keeping things private. We could ask Peter Ekholm tomorrow when he's on the floor. Yes, we will be talking to Peter Atcombe, who Alias Patterson spoke to. in Sweden for an interview
Starting point is 00:40:46 which we will dive into tomorrow with Peter at home regarding his summer how he's shaping up he's putting on some muscle ready for revenge don't ask any Canucks-related questions just keep asking the marriage question
Starting point is 00:40:59 over and over again in different ways but what what finger was the ring on no but seriously what's with the ring did you see his wife or his fiance or his girlfriend well intrepid Canucks fan reporters have noticed that his girlfriend or maybe fiance She posted on Instagram a ring as well on her finger
Starting point is 00:41:17 What looked to be an engagement ring So maybe, who knows? Maybe, I mean, congratulations, if it is true. Yeah. Was it an actual ring or was it like one of those ring pop things? I think it was a ring. I think it was a ring, okay. You never know.
Starting point is 00:41:30 You never know. As a ring pop enthusiast, I can confirm it. Okay. Actoring out so much about you this week, Andy. Ring pop enthusiasts. It could have been AI. Yeah. Well, you can't trust anything.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Yeah, you can't trust any photo these days. Before they posted pictures of Elias Patterson, And they're like, hold on, let's AI a ring on his finger. You need to create more controversy. Let's go. That'll show him. Yeah, a good story from Moj about Andrew Pearson and proposing. So when the tsunami warning, tsunami warming, when the tsunami warning came in, I was like, oh, man, like I got family on the island.
Starting point is 00:42:05 I was concerned. And then it was, it was one foot waves. I was like, ah, you know what? I think they'll be okay. Yeah. And they were. Thankfully we have that system in place because you'd rather get the warning for a one foot wave
Starting point is 00:42:16 than not get a warning for any but yeah like imagine being in that situation kind of reference there with Moj imagine being the fiance now but like back then where she's like what is this guy on like the world is getting warnings we should not be going to the beach right now
Starting point is 00:42:31 what is wrong with you like that might even be for some people like not a deal breaker but a like a question of like have you lost your mind or for him is it like oh man is this a sign like should I not be proposing? The world is against me right now. Okay, so that's the other perspective. Somebody who, what, tied the knot last year?
Starting point is 00:42:49 I did. Proposed the year before. Did you propose in the middle of a natural disaster? No, no, I did not. It was at a lake and there was no tsunami at said, like. Bunsen Lake, close to here. In December, though, it was very cold. No one foot waves there.
Starting point is 00:43:02 No, I will say the photographer situation, because I also hired a photographer, it's stressful, man, because you've got to, like, locate them when you walk out there. and then you also have to have a signal for like when you are ready to propose so that they're not just like taking pictures of strangers and what was your signal? The dialogue here. What a beautiful
Starting point is 00:43:23 view. Co-coo! Just a random noise. I think my signal was wrong with Josh. I like tapped her on the back but I did it too many times so the photographer like multiple times was like oh it's happening then it didn't happen and uh...
Starting point is 00:43:40 Wait, you just kept tapping her on the back? Well, I think I was nervous. She was involved in the signal? No, it was like a, it was a back rub situation. It was, it was like, it was natural. I meant it. No, it wasn't like a full back room. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:43:55 Could you imagine if it was like baseball style? Like, can I get a righty from the bullpen? Like, what are you doing? Josh, much you having a seizure. Yeah, yeah. It was, it was stressful. And then you're also in your head about like, how am I going to propose? Where am I going to do?
Starting point is 00:44:10 do it and I had like had gone and scouted the area before it's a lot man it's a lot and it was it was worth it I guess in the end okay one photographers like you know that's stressful I know some like some people get multiple angles on this so they have multiple photographers yeah which is like you can hire teams I think one is enough for a proposal it's like one's enough if you want to have multiple photographers at your wedding I like I only had one but I guess I get that just to get i get that but like a like a multiple photographers at a proposal is pretty wild when did the the photographer at the proposal become a big thing like i don't know i don't but i i probably coincide with the rise i should have yes yeah lots of photographers and videographers at the wedding
Starting point is 00:44:59 yeah at the proposal like i didn't have anyone there i took picture after yes gregg it it kind of some people still do that i think it coincides with this about the same time as like you know Remember when we start, like, I don't, but like kids, you know, parents of kids that celebrate their kindergarten graduation on Instagram? Yes. Like that became a thing, what, five to seven years ago? Or like the gender reveal? That became a thing sort of out of nowhere.
Starting point is 00:45:24 It's a certain generation hitting Instagram and never everything. Gender reveal isn't successful unless at least one person dies. Yes. Or if there's a baseball bat. It's got to get a broken limb at least. Yeah. We got to keep scaling up gender reveals until it's just, it's out of hand. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:37 Um, yeah, I don't know, because we, dude, there's so many things you got to do for a wedding that I, I was just so not prepared for. Like you got to do like an engagement photo shoot too, which is different than the proposal photo shoot. Yeah. It's a different thing. And I, I don't know. It's a lot of commitment. I'm glad it's over. I'm glad it's done. And I can just enjoy being married now. You're not going to have anniversary photo shoots. Oh, dude. My anniversary is in exactly a month. All right. I have nothing. I have nothing planned Don't admit that She's not listening For a guy that was taking Recommendations on what movies to watch I feel like you should be taking recommendations
Starting point is 00:46:17 On what to do for your first anniversary Get your priority straight in Send in some restaurant submissions Drive through Burger King maybe Yeah it might be a Whopper Wednesday Who knows? Yeah that'd be sick You grill at the Metro Town
Starting point is 00:46:30 The Food Court like spice it up a little bit We're going to Tinsletown It's going to be a great time Catch a movie Go to some store I don't know which ones, but... You can take her to the Koov sign. I mean, it's being built now.
Starting point is 00:46:41 Yeah, exactly. And the Kov store down the street. That's right. It could be a coove day. Yeah. Wow. What a time. What a time.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Thomas Mueller themed anniversary. Yeah. Go to a match. Go to a German restaurant. Get some schnitzel. Is she a soccer person? She's not German, nor is she into soccer. Okay, that won't work out.
Starting point is 00:47:00 Is she into schnitzel, though? Not particularly. It'll be okay. Who's not? I don't know. I don't know. It can not fail, I see it. Ultimate success.
Starting point is 00:47:09 It's all going to work out. You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough.
