got a lot to get into on a friday we got a big guest list we got two giveaways there's a lot of
sports on tonight what a day setting you up for the weekend guest listest list begins at 6.30. Brady Henderson, ESPN, Seahawks insider, is going to join us.
We are going to preview Monday Night Football.
That's right, we're going to skip all the way ahead
to the second of a doubleheader on Monday Night Football.
It is the Seattle Seahawks going to Detroit to take on the Lions.
Seahawks are three-and-a-half point dogs on the road.
We'll talk to Brady about that at 6.30.
7 o'clock, AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway.
It was a big night for AJ last night.
Oh, he got a good win.
The Cowboys.
Two good wins.
Well, yeah, the Yankees clinched the division.
And the Cowboys actually won a game.
Although, I don't think it was like super convincing or anything.
Well, the Yankees and Cowboys win.
All the Man U fans will be stoked.
Yeah, yeah.
AJ makes good pizza, but he's kind of the worst.
Yeah.
He's a real front runner.
Good pizza, though.
So 7 o'clock, we're going to talk to AJ.
Right after AJ, we're going to talk to Adam Stanley about the golf, the President's Cup.
No, President's Trophy.
I don't even care because it's over.
Yeah, it ended yesterday.
We're going to do a recap of the tournament.
What a disaster.
Yeah.
The Cleavers are out for everyone on this international team.
Oh, the Cleavers are out for Weirzy, too.
Yeah, I know.
I saw that.
Because he's sitting Kim down today.
Tom Kim in favor of playing all three Canadians.
Which he should have done yesterday.
You start the tournament with the Canadians.
You throw them out there.
You get the vibes going.
You get the forecheck going.
Well, he did start two Canadians, and they both lost again.
And Corey Connors is 0-5 in the President's Cup.
Taylor Pendrith, 0-5 in the President's Cup.
They're going to give McKenzie Hughes a chance to get on the board today.
Get out there, kid.
If you've only got two Canadians, the answer is more Canadians.
Three, four, five. Hell, Weir can play if he wants at this point. It doesn there, kid. If you've only got two Canadians, the answer is more Canadians. Three, four, five. Hell,
Weir can play if he wants at this point. It doesn't really matter.
Honestly, they might have to fly up Tiger to
have an exhibition between Weirzy and Tiger
because that was last time the President's
Cup was in Royal Montreal. The
Internationals lost, but at least Weirzy beat Tiger
in singles. Oh, that's good. That was
kind of the memorable moment. So we'll talk to Adam
Stanley about this golf tournament that's over after one
day. That'll be fun. 7.30, Moj is
going to join us. Bob the Moj Marjanovic.
Busy day for Moj. He'll be on the call
tonight. The BC Lions
are back in action after their bye week.
They're going to be hosting the Hamilton
Tiger Cats. Greg, are you going to be there wearing
your feline outfit? I will not, unfortunately.
A feline outfit? Yeah.
I know I had one. You do.
You're dressed up as a tiger. That could be supporting the outfit. Yeah. I didn't know I had one. You do. You're dressed up as a tiger.
That could be supporting the lions, too.
Cat.
Yeah.
Felines.
That's right.
It's an all-feline battle tonight.
You could be, you're neutral.
I got to really wear the tiger stuff to show the difference.
Right.
Yeah.
Oh, I'm not a lion.
Emphasize that.
Oh, dear, sir.
I'm not a lion.
730 Moj is going to join the program.
8 o'clock.
It's Rick Dollywall.
I don't know what
did Dolly send you
his talking points
for today already
you have those in the
chamber you're going
to keep a secret
the Canucks aren't
very happy
with Rick
no with one thing
that's a tease
the tease
oh we don't know
that's great
no no no
they're not very happy
that Demko's specific
injury got leaked
that's courtesy
of the Alfred Abruzzo
he's going to do
target it yeah well I know pack his popliteas I just don't think Demko's specific injury got leaked. That's courtesy to the Alfredo Bruch Show. He's going to do Target it?
Yeah.
Well, I know.
Hack his popliteas.
I just don't think they like any leaks whatsoever.
Like, they don't like it.
They're like, all right, who is it this time?
Yeah, that's true.
It's not so much that came out.
It's that it came out, right?
It doesn't matter what the injury is.
It's that it's now public knowledge.
I think Rick is pretty upset with it, too,
because now he has to say popliteas.
Yeah, that's right.
He didn't break it, and he has to say it.iteas. Yeah, that's right. He didn't break it and
he has to say it. So Dolly's going to join
us at 8 o'clock. We have two giveaways
today. Pay attention,
listeners, okay? We're going to explain
this a lot, but I'll explain it once right here.
We're giving away a $100 gift
card to AJ's Pizza on East
Broadway for the best Ask Us Anything.
That premise? Real simple.
Ask us something, We answer it.
You win pizza. We're also giving

So best ask us anything.
AJ's best what we learned.

Pizza emoji for the pizza.
Ticket emoji for the tickets.
Okay.
That's it.
Plain and simple.
That's what's happening on the program today, everybody. Laddie, let's tell everybody
what happened.
Hey, did you guys see the game last night?
No. What happened? I missed all the
action because I was...
We know how busy your life can be.
What happened? You missed that?

Thursday, no game for the Vancouver Canucks.
They'll prep for tonight's game against the Seattle Kraken in Seattle as that rivalry spices back up.
But there was some news and notes and a practice to talk about.
Let's begin with the news. Jet
Wu and Guillaume
Brisebois were both
placed on waivers yesterday for the purpose
of assigning them to Abbotsford.
We will not find out until
11 a.m. our time. They've changed that. Remember when it
used to be 9 a.m. our time? Now it's 11
a.m. our time. It's 2 o'clock eastern
to see if anyone picked up either player on waivers.
Brackets, I don't think it's going to happen.
But you never know.
Stranger things have happened.
Wu is yet to make his NHL debut, despite being called up to the team
on two different occasions, if I'm not mistaken.
Brisebois has played games dating all the way back to 2018-19.
And as I pointed out on Twitter yesterday,
there are only five current Canucks that played on that unforgettable 2018-2019 team.
It's Brock Besser, Thatcher Demko, Quinn Hughes, Elias Patterson,
and good old Guillaume Brisebois.
But it looks as though he'll be on his way down to Abbotsford.
Yeah, Brisebois was concussed for a lot of
last year and Jet Wu, you know, in some ways,
I'll be honest with you, in some ways I hope
someone picks him up.
I'm not joking because like I think, you know,
a fresh start somewhere else might be what he
needs.
It's not that he's been, you know, terrible with
the organization, but he's been terrible with the organization,
but he's been close a few times to making the team,
but never seems to find the right spot.
And frankly, I'm getting tired of people texting and asking about JetWoo.
Right, that one guy in particular.
Well, when you say people, yeah, we're referring to one person.
It wasn't only one person?
Yeah, talk about JetWoo. What's going on JetWoo-wise? Yeah, talk about JetWoo. Give us a referring to one person. Oh, is it only one person? Yeah. Talk about Jet Woo.
What's going on Jet Woo-wise?
Yeah, talk about Jet Woo.
Give us a Jet Woo update.
Dude, it's over.
We don't have an update to give you.
What do you want us to talk about?
Okay, let's talk about what happened at practice yesterday
because I'll be curious to see what kind of lineup rolls out tonight in Seattle.
The Canucks are about to play three games in four nights.
They go Seattle tonight, Calgary tomorrow,
and then Edmonton Monday, correct?
You have no idea.
Yep, no, you're right.
And they're all on the road.
And then that is all in anticipation of,
but their sixth and final preseason game,
JT Miller kind of leaked yesterday.
Not leaked, but yeah, he's in trouble now. He
said yesterday, you know,
that October 4th game,
which is a week from today,
that's their sixth and final preseason game,
will probably feature pretty much
the full team. Yeah, most teams, it sounds like
they're going to do that going into their final exhibition game.
By the way, tonight's game is the last
non-televised exhibition game
on the Canucks slate.
The rest of the ones that you mentioned will all be televised.
You can hear tonight's game right here on Sportsnet 650.
So I do wonder about who's going to be playing tonight.
I imagine JT Miller is going to make his preseason debut tonight,
but it could be with all the big dogs.
They were all skating together yesterday in the same group.
And there were two groups skating out at UBC.
They're using two sheets of ice there.
And one of the groups, the reporters figured,
was the group that was going to go down to Seattle
and play the Kraken.
Right.
And that featured the likes of Besser, Miller, Petey, DeBrusque, Hughes.
And I was thinking that at some point this preseason,
well, more than just that October 4th game,
Rick Tockett probably wants to get at least his first unit power play out.
Yeah.
And get him the first two games they haven't been together.
And the first game, the our play actually looked pretty good.
And he'll probably want to get that group together just to get at some reps.
And based on how spicy the first game against Seattle is,
there could be a parade to the penalty box tonight.
You're getting lots of opportunities.
Who knows? There might be a lot of penalties.
Okay, I want to play some audio from yesterday's practice.
The first is Rick Talkett discussing who will get that plum gig
playing alongside Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusque
on what will ostensibly be the Canucks' top line.
I believe it was Kiefer Sherwood.
I don't know if you mentioned it or not already yet.
Yeah, he was skating with those two yesterday.
Right.
So Talkett was speaking about it and what an opportunity it is.
And then he started listing some of the guys that will get a crack at it.
Here now, Rick Talkett on who gets to play with pd and nebrusk it's something i'm you know i'm not gonna lie to you i'm you know it's something every day okay how am
i gonna do but it should sort itself out you know um you know i'm not i mean there's a lot of
different options to go you know i could put hog in the left and i know jay can play the right side
he's he's actually a good right winger too.
He could do that.
Sherwood could go up there.
There's a lot of different guys that can go.
I think Leonard Mackey's done a nice job in his time there.
So it's a job we're looking for somebody to take a hold of.
And it's important that we find a guy that can push the pace.
And the same thing, Petey's got to push the pace too.
So we've got to make sure that we get that line sorted out.
But as for the Heinen, yeah, I like Heinen where he is with Miller and Besser.
Smart guy.
So I think Heinen is, I don't want to say like super obvious
and the only guy that can play with Miller and Besser,
but I think he really fits there.
He's defensively sound.
He's got speed, which I think adds something that that line could possibly need.
Yep.
And Rick Tockett is pretty comfortable with that.
Tockett's basically said that's a trio.
Yeah.
Kynan, Besser, Miller.
And they work together a lot in training camp, and we'll probably see them tonight.
That's good.
In Seattle, although you won't really see it unless there's another technically problematic stream.
Mm-hmm. won't really see it unless there's another technically problematic stream.
The other one, there just isn't an obvious fit there.
Now people might say, well, what about
Daniel Sprung?
He scored that amazing goal.
Yep, it's a possibility, but this is a guy
who has bounced around the NHL and needs to
round out his game.
And we'll talk a bit more about Daniel Sprung.
Lekar Mackey, maybe.
He's a rookie though, right?
He might be better sort of starting the season
or finishing the whole season down in the AHL.
Nils Holgrener, possible, but not obvious.
And, you know, Kiefer Sherwood,
I don't think anyone, when the Canucks signed him,
were like, there is a guy that's going to fit
in the top six, right?
Like he's an energy player. I know the Canucks, when they did sign him, were like, there is a guy that's going to fit in the top six. He's an energy player.
I know the Canucks, when they did sign him, they thought,
well, maybe there's more to this guy.
He's got some speed.
He's got some energy.
Maybe he can bring something to that line.
I don't know if it's going to be a rotating cast of wingers
with Petey and DeBrusque.
I mean, we have to make sure also that Petey and DeBrusque work.
Yeah.
I know we saw them a little bit.
It sounds like even if it's not, they're going to force make sure also that PD and DeBrusque work. Yeah. I know we saw them a little bit. It sounds like if it's
not, they're going to force it. Make it work.
Like, it's supposed to work. This is how it's going to work.
For sure.
And they're definitely going to get a run
for a while together.
I mean, I shouldn't say
definitely, but probably. Just say definitely. It's
fine. Okay. No one's going to check you on it.
People check everything on this show.
No, they don't. That's true. They don't. We got four texts in right now, actually. Okay. No one's going to check you on it. People check everything on this show. No, they don't. That's true.
They don't.
We got a lot of texts in right now, actually.
Actually.
But it will be interesting to see who grabs that spot because not only is it important
for the team that that line really clicks, whoever grabs that spot, you know, like I'm
making the money sign right now for that person that is a massive opportunity
to go and play with two guys that can create points and create scoring chances so when Rick
Talkett was first speaking about you know who's got an opportunity to play on that line he mentioned
all the guys you just mentioned Kiefer Sherwood, handful of other guys,
Nils Hoaglander,
Jonathan Lacromackie.
And then one of the reporters
in the scrum astutely pointed out
that he didn't mention Daniel Sprung.
And then Rick Tockett went on
a very lengthy and interesting
sort of explainer on,
yeah, Sprung is totally mixed.
I think he just overlooked his name.
And then he started talking about him in detail.
So here begins the Daniel Sprung discourse,
because he was a pretty major character yesterday.
Here's Rick Tockett on Daniel Sprung.
I forgot about it.
Like, I shouldn't forget him because he's a guy that we are really excited to help and teach.
You know, you saw that goal last night.
You know, he can do that it's the sometimes in
between that is where he gets a little lost and I think if we can I'm excited to work on put it
that way like really excited can he be on the on the flank there yeah he is a definitely a candidate
order yeah I mean be crazy not to give him a chance up there. We all see that goal last night.
What do you see on the other half of the ice?
Because I know that's been sort of the big thing since he got there.
Well, I think it's, you know, I have a good relationship with him.
He wants to learn.
I mean, he came in really good shape.
He's been texting and asking for video.
He wants to be a better player and the complete player
Said seven like IQ said he has seven coaches seven different teams
You know, he's got to settle in and then really take this information and Kenny can it be a complete player? So
Your question is basically, you know, he can't you can't go unnoticed You know, sometimes he doesn't move his feet
He's kind of he gets lost out there where where I like to see his motor going like he did
and if he makes
an aggressive mistake
when he's motoring I can live with that
it's just when he's very
if he loses his guy or he dives in
he does that
I haven't seen that much
it's only 4 or 5 or 6 days but he's really conscious of it
you do some intel
you talk to some
other coaches too, so you try to get some intel
on him.
But, you know, I think we got a good handle on
him and what he knows what he has to do.
Like he knows that there's certain things he
has to do to earn the trust and the ice up.
Sometimes I wonder if one of the hardest things
for a player is just maintaining focus
throughout the game.
Any athlete, really.
Certainly golf.
It is for goalies.
Yeah.
Well, goalies, yeah.
And you know how they say in this,
they say focus is the new IQ,
just with cell phones and everything,
and it's the people that can sit down and actually work
and focus on one task.
That's a bit of an aside.
I just think when you're playing a hockey game
and what he's basically saying is like,
there are some times that Sprong just kind of checks out
when he's on the ice
and his brain just isn't thinking about
all his responsibilities.
And, you know, Laddie, I'm sure that's something
that goalies have to be trained.
Like you have to be focused the whole time.
And it's hard.
You have to kind of exercise your brain in order to do that.
The same is true for a coach too, right?
Like you're sitting behind the bench and sometimes you can get caught just watching the game, right?
Manny Malhotra kind of mentioned that actually.
And I don't want to put words in his mouth, but he said like, yeah, you got to get back to being like behind the bench and remembering like your responsibilities as a coach
and you're kind of getting out of summer mode and into hockey mode it is a not only a physically
challenging game but it really is a mentally challenging game especially at the pro level
at the NHL level which is obviously very different than your beer league when you're like, I'm a winger, I go here,
right?
Like you've got, you've got responsibilities
constantly.
You've got to be checking where other guys
are on the ice and where you are on the ice.
And that might sound like, well, you should
know where you are on the ice, but if you're,
you know, three feet out of the spot where
you're supposed to be, if you're say penalty
killing or something, well, that, that's a
problem. And we've heard a lot aboutick talk at making landmarks on the ice and
saying you got to get to this spot you got to hit your mark um and i think that it sounds like
it sounds like that might be one of the issues with daniel sprung like when he's got the
opportunity to make a play with the puck he can definitely do it but in the meantime he needs to
to realize that he's even if the puck's not on his stick or even if there's not even a chance
for the puck to get on his stick he still has to be playing the game well i i think does that make
sense yeah but i think the interesting takeaway was that one thing that talk it said and then what
sprung sort of later acknowledged in an interview that he did with IMAC and IMAC's
got a piece up now on sportsnet.ca about journeyman Daniel Sprung hoping to find a home with the
Canucks Tuckett said you know the guys had seven coaches in seven years and there was a quote in
the piece from Sprung about his conversation with Tuckett who one of the few coaches that he had
actually had some familiarity with.
Like Sprung basically gets a new coach every year,
if you want to look at his career.
Since he broke into the NHL, he's gone.
Mike Johnson, Mike Sullivan, Randy Carlisle, Bob Murray,
Peter LaViolette, Dave Haxtell,
who should have asked about Daniel Sprung, by the way,
because he coached him for a couple of years in Seattle,
and then Derek Lalonde, right?
So the quote that Sprong had about his off-season chat prior to signing in
Vancouver with Rick Tockett was, here's the quote.
We talked about, you know, hockey in general,
and then pretty much about my situation.
I told him some stories that coaches have told me that didn't really make
sense.
Things that happened.
I think that stays between me and him.
But the decision to come here was after that talk.
That, to me, is a very interesting dynamic
because I think a lot of people have put this solely at the feet of Daniel Sprong's game.
Right?
The reason that he's bounced around is because of what he does
and, more importantly of what he does and
more importantly what he doesn't do are you blaming his coaches well blaming anyone i'm just
saying it's a nice nuanced conversation that maybe part of the reason that he's all jumbled up about
what he's supposed to do on the ice is because he's had seven different game plans in seven
different seasons yeah maybe it was like when alex smith do you remember him yeah quarterback
yeah like new york offensive coordinator every six weeks.
Every year for the 49ers.
Yeah, I got to learn one playbook, and then I got to learn a whole different one.
This guy's telling me to throw it backwards.
Right?
Laterals.
We're going to play rugby out here.
Fish Dancer texted in, is Sprong checking his Twitter in the neutral zone?
I mean, yeah.
That's kind of like the idea, right?
That's why some guys delete social media.
Yeah, you just got to be dialed in.
I can't tell you how many times as a reporter I've gone to games and gone,
all right, I'm going to like really watch the game.
I'm going to really, really watch the game.
And five minutes in, I'm arguing with someone on Twitter.
Yeah, it's tough.
It's hard to maintain your focus.
And I know people will probably be like,
they're professional athletes, they should be able to do it.
Yeah, but that might be what separates professional athletes
from the guys that aren't trusted by their coaches,
their ability to focus and lock in on an entire game.
Yeah.
And like, dear listeners, don't get me wrong.
Like, I know who and what we're talking about here.
And this is a lot, I mean, there's been a lot of ink spilled
and a lot of words spoken about, quite frankly,
a guy that just might not pan out here
like he has in Detroit, Seattle, Washington,
Anaheim, and Pittsburgh.
That's what we do in the preseason, though.
This is what we do.
We should just lean into it.
But the only...
Well, here's the thing.
I like people that are just like,
don't talk about anything
because nothing matters in the preseason.
But this isn't even about what happens in the preseason.
Let's talk about the NFL then.
Right.
And we can't do that.
We're going to do that next with Brady Henderson.
But I do wonder, I do wonder if maybe Talkett's the guy,
not necessarily is like the sprung whisper or anything.
That's not it.
But if he can give them the structure that he was able to implement to an entire
team last year. Yeah, the team was a bunch
of sprongs anyway. A lot of spronging.
Before
talk had arrived, and sometimes players
just need really simple directions.
And how many times do we
hear that? How many times do we hear that?
It's a lot easier now.
It's black and white. There's less gray.
You know, Bruce Boudreau, lovable guy,
had a lot of success in the league.
Not the right coach for the Canucks, though.
He was for a bit, but he wasn't long-term
because his attitude was like,
you guys are good hockey players.
Go out and play.
His team needed direction, badly needed direction,
and maybe Daniel Sprung needs some direction.
So a friendly reminder,
tonight at Climate Pledge,
not Climate Change Arena,
not Lemon Pledge Arena.
Oh, it's Lemon Pledge Arena.
The Canucks will be taking on the Seattle Kraken.
I normally don't do this for preseason games
and spend any time talking about the opponent
because who knows who they're going to play,
who they're going to address.
You don't get the lineups until like an hour before the game
i will say this um seattle is leaning into the i5 rivalry are we did you see people trying to
call it the i5 ori i saw it i saw it on twitter you don't don't do that um the cracker leaning
into it now that sounds like a mistake that Dollywood would make.
Yeah,
kinda.
And we'll see if he does it at eight o'clock when he joins us on the
program.
They had an article sort of previewing tonight's game,
but also reflecting how chippy Tuesday night's affair was.
And John Hayden,
who you'll remember scrapped Vilmer Ulrichson in that Tuesday night game
said, quote, this is turning into a great rivalry.
It's good for both cities.
Then get this, Jason.
When asked about how the Kraken approached the game,
he said, we had a pack mentality all night against the Canucks.
So not only are the Canucks working on their pack mentality,
so too are their I-5-les.
Well, at least the Kraken are doing something to make themselves interesting.
They have to try something.
Thursday night football.
Last night we're going to get Brady Henderson.
Just thoughts on the game.
The Cowboys pull it out.
Yeah, the Cowboys got a win despite not having the football for hours at a time.
It was a very strange game.
20-15 victory for the
Cowboys over the Giants
as we want to say on this program.
Not an oil painting, but a lot of it
had to do with the fact that the Giants
did an amazing job of
possessing the football. Nearly 36
minutes time of possession, but you know what they didn't
do a good job of? Scoring
touchdowns. Yeah, that's important.
And score a single one of them.
Five field goals last night.
So now they've played two games at home.
They don't have a touchdown in either home game.
Is it fair to say that Daniel Jones,
when he takes the snap,
he looks good.
Like he looks, he's not immobile.
He looks good.
He looks like he knows what he's doing.
But then just his accuracy sometimes lets him down.
So it's funny.
We had a text come in this morning asking about that,
saying Daniel Jones' contract is going to be an albatross around this.
And I'm like, you saw that from last night?
Because last night I thought was one of his better games.
Yeah, but he's still like his deep ball can be tough to watch sometimes he hit Malik Davis for
one good long pass he missed on a couple others yeah he was pretty accurate last day and the
interception but I think that is if there's any Giants fans out there is his accuracy his number
one weakness yes yeah yeah and uh part and parcel that is the decision making that he has.
Sometimes he makes really bad decisions where he wants to throw the football.
Or maybe it just looks that way because his accuracy is bad.
Well, no.
He's like, I didn't mean to do that.
Here's what I think it is.
I think he thinks he's a more accurate thrower than he is.
So he tries to make throws that like a handful of guys can make.
And Danny Dimes.
I'm going to throw this through the eye of the
needle three guys triple coverage no problem danny dimes can throw you're listening to the best of
halford and brough you're listening to the best of halford and brough justin and east van will
then ask us anything so justin's long time listener um records an inordinate amount of
halford and brough content and unfortunately not eligible to win anything
because he texts in too frequently.
Your two faces is his entire PVR.
Yeah.
It's just you guys.
But he always sends good ass.
This is a good one.
Would you rather order a few appetizers
or order an entire entree when dining at a restaurant?
So a couple of times recently,
I've gone the
Couple appetizers route just for something different
I think I got
Last time I got like wings
And a salad
And something else
Are we talking the prices the same?
No I was going to get to that part
Because two appetizers can be way more than one
Way more
Restaurants
I can barely afford to go out to eat anymore.
I don't even do it anymore.
Except AJ's.
Yeah, they make you tip 35% now.
Yeah.
Okay, so that's the start.
The appetizer.
We went to a restaurant the other day and we're like,
we're not going to have drinks tonight.
And let's see what the bill is.
Still expensive.
Yeah, I didn't work.
It's just not as expensive.
Coke was 10 bucks.
What? Was it cheap? No, not cheap. It's just not as expensive. Coke was 10 bucks. What?
Was it cheap?
No, not cheap.
That's not the right word.
Appetizer.
The appetizer game that Justin is talking about here used to be legitimate.
Because there used to be a significant divide between an appetizer price and an entree price.
Now, I've seen a pound of wings or a dozen wings for like 18 19 dollars on the menu yeah yeah
so you're not really saving any money you're just getting smaller portions for almost the same
amount of money i like the the concept of i will have the truffle fries you know what more people
need to do in this city seven dollars yeah you know what more more trouble more people need to do in this city? Is have a competitive happy hour.
Like a really good, I need to go there because it's so affordable happy hour.
There's too many like Fugazi name only happy hours.
It would cost too much now though, even for the restauranteurs.
You can do it.
I don't know.
You can cut corners.
You can also.
You just got to keep them in there until happy hour ends.
And then be...
And then jack up the prices, but they want another drink.
And then be vigilant at like 4.59.
Like, you better get an order in.
Because at 5, this happy hour is over, and that menu does not exist at 5.01.
Because I always look for a happy hour.
I love a good happy hour.
Wings are too expensive though now, man.
Wings should never exceed though now, man. They should not be more.
Wings should never exceed
25 cents a wing.
That should be the cap
on chicken wings.
Unless the wing is like
a behemoth of a chicken wing.
A-Dog's restaurant
out of business
in five minutes.
No, man.
There was this great joint
back in Kamloops.
10 cent chicken wings.
Kamloops.
Oh, is the rent the same
as in Vancouver?
Do we do better
than offering one flavor?
10 cent chicken wings every Tuesday night.
It was awesome.
Chicken wings are too expensive these days.
We need to find a different animal with wings that are cheaper,
like buzzard wings.
You guys got any of those pigeon wings?
Pigeon population in Vancouver just decimated.
Someone is coming over the happy hour, pigeon wings,
and you know it's happening.
One day you're just walking around downtown,
you notice there are no more pigeons around here anymore?
Do you guys have chicken wings?
We have wings.
Well, they are wings of a bird.
Asterisk wings.
MKL, ask us anything.
Which sport athlete slash celebrity was your first autograph?
My first one was A-Rod at Yankee Stadium in his final year with the team.
I don't remember any,
I've never been a big autograph guy.
Who was yours then?
Trevor Linden.
Oh, that's a good one for your first.
That's a special time.
The Safeway in Richmond.
I think it was 1988.
Mine was Darcy Roda.
Wow.
Weird, mine was Don Cherry.
Don Cherry Don Cherry
really
nice
he was
he was coaching
a celebrity
hockey game
that's a good one
yeah
that's a good one
so
do you remember
what you got him to sign
just a piece of paper
yeah
I had a piece of paper
then I got it laminated
Canada first
he actually wrote that
yeah
he signed it out
to you people
and then I laminated the Linden autograph
and later used it to cover up a hole in my wall
that my brother and I punched in the wall
because we were screwing around with our wrestlers
and he chucked the wrestling ring.
Oh, yeah.
Did you get caught?
No.
Trevor Linden saved me.
Was it like Shawshank Redemption?
You had a big hole in your...
It was a tiny hole, and I
didn't keep digging it bigger
and bigger.
Covered up with a signature of Trevor Linden.
I was free to leave whenever I wanted.
I just needed to cover up that one hole.
So Trevor Linden, not only was
it my first autograph, but it first saved me from a very
serious punishment. You should have told him this when we had him
on last year. I didn't want to age him.
I didn't want to do it. I would have loved to see his reaction. Yeah, I didn't want to do it. You should have told him this when we had him on last year. I didn't want to age him. I didn't want to do it.
I would have loved to see his reaction.
Yeah, I didn't want to do it.
Trevor, have you seen Shawshank Redemption?
Yeah.

on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Good morning, Rick. How are you?
By the way, the second
biggest high school in Western Canada
and a huge high school.
We needed a 10-minute break
to walk during
the breaks, to walk from one end of the
school to the other. Best
high school in the Lower mainland, nothing comes close.
It was so big, that's why all the students fell through the cracks there.
And Marjanovic, Bobby graduated four years before I did.
He graduated in 82, I graduated in 86.
But Bob took eight years, I took four.
You guys are still, Moe's told the exact same joke
about you. You guys have the same routine.
Is this what they teach you at New West?
That's it. Hey, but look at...
Come on. Moe, you know he barely got past
grade 12. Come on.
Let's talk about Ian Clark.
There's more. I thought this story
was over. Well, actually, I didn't.
I thought that at some point, Ian Clark
might move on from the organization, possibly sooner rather than later. Is that happening right now?
Okay, I'm going to tell you this. I said on the show last week on Donnie and Dolly that it will
not surprise me. I said this a week ago. It will not surprise me if the Canucks give Clark permission
to talk with teams at some point this year. I don't think the relationship's in a good state.
I think it's definitely soured.
When the Canucks demoted him to goalie scout,
I believe he wanted the director of goaltending title.
In the Canucks' defense, it was Clark who said he didn't want to be on the ice every day
because of bad shoulders and knees.
But I don't think he expected to be named a scout.
His resume clearly tells you he is way more than a scout.
He's very well respected around the
league. Now, is Clark looking for a new job? Are the Canucks helping him? There's a lot of ways to
look at this. Clark was not at the Canucks' main training camp in Penticton. Why would the guy
who's got the most knowledge about all your goalies on your staff, the drafted ones, everybody,
not be a camp worker with these goalies, keeping an eye on Demko and others.
You know, this guy has made all major goalie decisions for the Canucks in the past how many years?
When Casey DeSmith was ready after one game, missing one game in Nashville,
it was Clark who said, nope, we're going to stick with Seeloff.
We're going to stick with him.
This guy has made major decision after major decision after
major decision. I heard he wasn't even in town that weekend when the Canucks were at training
camp in Penticton. Now he's got two years left on his deal. If he isn't one, he is 1A in terms of
the highest paid goalies in the National Hockey League. I know Elliot linked the Devils to Clark.
You could link a lot of teams to clark
i could list others but the bottom line is how much longer is clark in vancouver he's very well
respected the last demko contract remember this guys demko made sure clark was going to be
re-signed before he re-signed uh jim benning signed clark after he signed Demko. Demko's got two years left on his deal. They have
a very good relationship. There's a lot of things at play when it comes to Clark and his future in
Vancouver right now. Okay, I have a two-part question. The first question is a simple yes or
no. First question, is it fair to say that the relationship between Ian Clark and the Canucks has been damaged. Yes.
Follow-up question.
Why specifically is it bad?
Yeah.
Look, it started in the summer.
Jason, he went to the Canucks, and he said,
look, I can't be the everyday goaltender.
Give me another title.
I firmly believe, probably with his resume and how many years in the league
and how important he is to this team
and how many great goaltenders he's had.
Bob Roski, Luongo, Demko, Markstrom, the list goes on.
Probably thinking, you know, Luongo's got that title
of director of goaltending title in Florida.
Probably was looking something like that.
But I don't think...
He had that, didn't he?
He had that title.
Yeah, but when they restructured everything,
he went to a goaltending scout.
Like, I just...
We are hearing more and more
that this relationship, you know,
could be, you know, fractured.
It is.
And the fact that now we're hearing teams that are linked to Ian Clark,
like the Devils.
The Devils, by the way, have a large goaltending staff.
They have a goalie coach.
But you know who loves Clark in New Jersey.
It's Jacob Markstrom, right?
There's even that rumor that Markstrom named his kid after Ian Clark.
Not Ian, but I think he named him Clark. Right. But, you know, Markstrom named his kid after Ian Clark. Not Ian, but I think he named him Clark.
Right.
But, you know, there's a great relationship there.
He's got great relationships with a lot of goalies
around the National Hockey League,
but now you're starting to hear teams link to him,
and it's just exactly what I said last week.
I will not be surprised if the Canucks at some point
give this guy permission at some point this year
to talk to
other teams. So I don't want to continue putting you on the spot here. I do. Did the relationship
and the fracture in the relationship, was it related at all to possibly a disagreement
on how hard goalies like Thatcher Demko should be working on a day-to-day
basis? That's a good question because I'm going to tell you something. After he was demoted
to goalie scout, you started hearing a lot in the media about Demko was overworked. Demko,
you know, he shouldn't have, you know, played that first game against Nashville.
And you started hearing national guys link Clark with,
you know, Demko's injury.
You know, did he overwork him?
Did he?
I'm not going to blame Ian Clark for Demko.
Three coaches in this city have overplayed him.
And Travis Green and Boudreaux essentially had bad teams.
So when you have a really good goaltender like him, especially Boudreaux, and even last
year, like if he didn't get hurt when he got hurt,
he was on pace for 65 games.
You can blame Ian Clark for working Demko too,
but you've got to put some heat on the coaches who kept playing him.
He can't play over 60 games.
His sweet spot is 50 to 55.
And this is something, and maybe the Canucks learned from this whole thing,
and when Demko
comes back Jason they have got to come up with a plan for him you know rest practice games you
have a goaltender who now essentially he's been out seven months so we don't know how many more
months he's going to be out and you know that he can't play 60 65 games as an organization I think
they have to sit down and I have to they have to map out a plan for this guy and he can't play 60, 65 games. As an organization, I think they have to sit down,
and they have to map out a plan for this guy,
and they can't overplay him.
And after the All-Star game last year,
remember they had those road trips back east,
and he was still playing a ton?
I think as an organization, you can't put that on Ian Clark.
You've had coaches in the city that have overplayed him as well.
Is there any update on Factor Demko?
And I know, well, from what you told me, the Canucks aren't very happy that his specific injury got out. Progress is being made. He's still not ready to skate with the main group.
He's skating on his own this week. Still no set date for his return. I don't know why, Jason,
they don't say it's week-to-week, which essentially
actually it is. We're kind of
monitoring him week-to-week, but
I do expect the Canucks to start the season with
three goaltenders. I do expect that.
Yeah, the Canucks were not happy
that it got leaked out.
Pop Latius,
they were quite upset about that.
Funny thing is,
there was a lot of reporters close to naming that name.
Kevin Woodley got it.
When the team doesn't announce an injury of a high-profile player in a Canadian market,
reporters are going to take it upon themselves to get that info.
Look at William Nylander last year in Toronto.
Remember that?
Leafs didn't announce it.
Elliott Friedman got it through hard work.
And just like Woodley, Friedman felt the heat for releasing that.
I think in a Canadian market, when you don't release the injury of a high-profile player like Fajard Emko,
I think the media is going to go fishing.
And Woodley did.
I just want to say that Woodley, I thought he did a great job.
And he's great at what he does.
But the Canucks were not happy that Pop Latias got out there.
Now, it sounds like Kevin Lankanen might play tonight in Seattle,
Seelovs possibly tomorrow in Calgary.
I know you've been impressed with how Seelovs has looked since Lankanen was signed and just overall.
Hey, I got to give Seelovs credit.
I don't imagine he was doing cartwheels about the Lankanen was signed and just overall? Hey, I got to give Seeloff's credit. I don't imagine he was
doing cartwheels about the Lankanen signing. Just like I don't think Vernon Adams was doing
cartwheels when the Lions signed Nathan Rourke. But hey, it's pro hockey. It's pro sports. That's
what happens in pro sports. Things change real quick. Since the Lankanen signing on Saturday,
look at what Seeloff's has done. He could have pouted, he cried, his performance could have gone down.
He was great in the inter-squad game at training camp on Sunday,
then played great in his first preseason game against Seattle.
That's a good sign to me about this young kid's mental toughness.
He didn't let the Lankanen signing affect his play.
If Demko is out for a while more after the regular season,
that Seeloff-Lankanen duo should be just fine to start the season.
Lankanen will play in Seattle tonight,
but now I'm starting to figure out why the Canucks got Lankanen.
And if Thatcher's not there for a while after the regular season opener,
Canucks are looking a whole lot better than they would have
if it was Seelovs and Patera, although Patera played good the other night.
And I want to give credit to the Canucks.
They did a masterful job of outweighing Lankanen.
When training camp started, Lankanen lost agent.
Him and his agent lost leverage.
Canucks got the leverage, and they outweighed that guy at a great price.
And right now, today, they're better off for it,
and so is their goaltending situation.
Did you see that John Gibson just had an appendectomy too?
He was out for a few weeks.
Lankanen was like, come on!
Couldn't have had that earlier!
And that was a team that Lankanen's agent was looking at all summer.
I think the two teams were Anaheim and Vancouver.
And then there's also the situation in New York with the Islanders.
Their number one goaltender is out as well.
So there were some openings for Lankanen, but the goalie market dried up, and he had
no choice.
Like, he literally, as soon as camp started, and he was kind of stuck in Finland because
all the Finland NHL sharpshooters left, and he kind of was going to have a tough time
getting good reps in with good shooters in Finland.
So I think his agent did a good job and said, look, we've got to get going,
and I think the Canucks are better for it.
I'm going to give you a choice here.
If one of these guys is going to make the team, Lekker Mäki or Ratu, who's it going to be?
First of all, I want to give credit to Ratu.
He improved his skating over the summer.
He had a skating coach in Finland.
He put in the hours.
His agent told me that Ratu comes from a very disciplined, hardworking family.
Now, remember this.
His brother's in Utica with the Utica Hockey Club system,
and he's close to making that team.
His maturity and growth in the past 12 months has been pretty damn good.
He's starting to put it
together. Now, remember this. He never got called up by the Canucks last year, but the way his
training camp is gone and the way his preseason is gone, he has definitely put himself in the
conversation to be called up this season if he's not on the opening night roster. There was Talkit
again yesterday commenting about Ratu. He's clearly impressing who he needs to impress.
If he makes it and plays for the Canucks,
he's going to make the Bo Horvat trade a whole lot more digestible.
The Canucks need Rattu to make it.
They can't keep plugging two centermen for free agency on one two-year deal forever.
They need centermen coming through the system, and I think this kid and I think Sasson,
if the Canucks a chance to build from within at the center ice position.
Hey, Rick, we got a question from Maury, the mill manager here.
We're going to go back to the injury, Demko's injury getting out.
Maury asked the question,
why are the Canucks so bent out of shape about the Poplatius injury getting out?
What is, what is, is it, is it, they just don't like information getting out regardless?
Or do they see a potential liability or vulnerability that people know what the injury is?
What, what is the reason there that they'd be upset?
Well, it's, we'd have to ask them.
But, you know, if they didn't release Popliteus, hold on a second, I got it written down.
Before I say this, I lost my paper.
Hold on a sec here.
Popliteus, where is it?
Yeah, you got it.
You just said it.
I know, but I'm going to screw it up if I don't have it written down.
You just said it.
If they wanted Popliteus out there, they would have released Popliteus.
But clearly, it irked them that Popliteus got out, and Popliteus is out there now, and they're not happy.
It's not a person, you know.
It's a part of your body.
I can't believe I nailed Popliteus.
You know what When I have something written on a piece of paper
I start sweating
And you know how I phonetically
Spell everything out
Remember how I spelled Ratu to you last night
Anyways
Poplatius I have to spell it out phonetically
Just like this Russian kid out of the OHL
I love this kid
I'm not going to say it
It's Corral
Is it Kudryatsev There's a Russian kid out of the OHL. I love this kid. Oh, yeah. His name, I'm not going to say it. It's Corral, but I can't say it.
Is it Kudryatsev?
Kudryatsev.
This kid, keep an eye on him.
I'm telling you, this kid's going to be a player.
I texted Milstein.
I said, how do you pronounce his name?
And Milstein sent me a voice text.
I still screwed it up.
Does Milstein have any clients left?
Yes, he does.
He's got the kid from the OHL. With the
Canucks. I know he's got a lot of clients. Yeah, he's got the kid. He's got Klimovich,
and he's got Sasson. Right. Right? So he's got, like, this kid from the OHL, Corral,
you know, and him. And I told you the Sawyer Minio, I've been on the Minio train for a while.
I told you guys last year, this kid's going to be a player. He's going to have a monster year
in Seattle this year. Canuck fans, keep an eye on him when the Thunderbirds come to Vancouver
to play the Giants. This kid's going to have these two young defensemen. They're making waves.
When Rick Tockett singles out two junior age kids, I know he's going to play in Abbey,
but when he singles out kids like that, that's impressive to me.
And he has singled out Sawyer Mineo, and he has singled out Corral,
the OHL Russian defenseman, and that's pretty damn impressive to me when Rick Talker singles him out like that.
He also singled out Alrickson.
I love this kid.
And, you know, you heard the story, you got in the fight the other night.
Last year in the OHL, his agent told me he got offered to fight a lot.
And he finally got in a fight with a kid and he beat him up and nobody asked him to fight again for the rest of the year.
He is a giant out there, as are you in this media industry, Rick.
Thanks for joining us today.
No more Pop Latias.
That's it.
I don't want to hear Pop Latiteas for the rest of the year.
No more.
I think you're the most upset that it got leaked.
Well, and this Russian kid and Sawyer Minion, watch out.
The good kids.
Bye.
See you, Rick.
Rick Dollywell.
You know what?
Not a great hang up there.
No.
Kind of glitched out when you did it.
Yeah.
By the way, we've got someone texting in.
This person says, I work in physical therapy therapy and this has been the most annoying week seeing and hearing everyone become experts and then mispronouncing what we've been calling popliteus.
Now he seems to suggest that it's not popliteus, it's popliteus? Popliteus. Popliteus? Popliteus. Popliteus. Popliteus it's popliteus popliteus popliteus popliteus popliteus popliteus popliteus
so i asked uh the dogs to find some audio on youtube of a doctor talking about
whatever he's going to pronounce it like the popliteiteus muscle, or in Latin, musculus popliteus,
is a small muscle located at the knee joint.
Are you suggesting...
There you go.
Wait a minute.
Are you suggesting that someone who texts into a radio show
claiming to be a physician might not be accurate?
Are you saying there's hard words to say?
I find it hard to believe.
This person that we have not vetted at all.
What percentage of the show is just us trying to figure out how to pronounce stuff?
Far too much.
When there's injuries, it's pretty much the whole show.
For people that do it professionally.
And the players on the Canucks.
And they've really, I have to say, they've really thrown us a curveball.
We got two Elias Pettersons on the team,
but one is Elias Petterson.
Yeah.
And these pronunciations are going around.
It's like Elias Petterson, number 40,
that guy with the contract.
DPD is Elias Petterson.
Yeah.
I don't like it.
I don't care for it.
You're listening to the best of Halford & Brough.
