Yes, the 32-year-old Scott, designated player,
the newest designated player.

We can also ask him about Ryan Gould's debut yesterday for Scotland.
I'm sure Stu took it in along with all of the Whitecaps yesterday.
They were watching it on television.
They posted video onto their social media.
That was nice that Ryan Gould got the true Scottish experience of a heartbreaking loss.
Just a very disappointing and underwhelming performance.
But he played well, apparently.
He came on late.
Yes, he came on in the 70th minute.
And they proceeded to be their most dangerous player.
So we'll talk to Stuart Armstrong at 7.30 about that.
At 8 o'clock, it's the Moj.
Yes, it's the Moj.
I hope we can track him down.

I'm nervous.
I'm nervous because you've already taken umbrage. Yes, umbrage
with my notes. Let's get to
the headline first.
Defending champion, Kansas City
Chiefs edge the Baltimore Ravens 27
to 20. Football is a game of inches,
folks. It's actually a game of Isaiah
Likely's toes. They were in the back of the
end zone. It's a game of toes, folks. A little too
much at the end. Ravens had a chance to
tie it late. They didn't.
Chiefs take care of business.
Win 27-20.
What in my notes are you taking issue with?
Just keep going.
Keep going.
Talk about Lamar Jackson and how great he was last night.
I didn't think he was great, but I think he did.
No, no, no.
Read what you wrote in your notes.
Lamar Jackson did everything he needed to do for the Ravens to win the game.
He sounded like he was great then.
He ran the ball 16 times for 122 yards.
Amazing. Well, he led the
both teams in rushing. Keep going.
He went 26-41, passing for 273
yards and a touchdown. He didn't throw any picks.
He only got sacked once. Yes, he did
turn the ball over, a fumble, but overall
he went for nearly 400 yards
and was an inch away from scoring 27
points, so he did his job and then some.
So he did his job and then some. So he did his job and then some.
Wouldn't his job include hitting a wide-open receiver
when you need to right at the end of a game?
Is that not the type of clutch performance
that the Ravens need from Lamar Jackson?
We all know he's great.
We all know he's incredible.
He can run. He can pass.
The question for him is,
can he own the big moments like the greats?
He didn't own it last night.
I'm sorry, he didn't.
The question that I had going into yesterday's game
was in the big moments,
is he going to continue to lay eggs
like he had in the postseason?
That was what we were talking about yesterday,
that in the six playoff games that he's had,
he's two and four,
and the team has averaged 10 points.
And he has turned the ball over 10 times in those six games.
So from that, I was trying to say, hey, you put up 400 yards of offense.
You run the ball as effectively as you run the ball really effectively.
Yeah, he looks slimmer because he is.
He was very it was very exciting game.
I only watched the fourth quarter and I was kind of cheering for him to make that comeback.
And I was frustrated when he missed the I don't know who it was.
He missed a guy who was wide open in the end zone.
And the receiver was like, come on, man, you got to hit me right here.
Right. So if you miss the final play of the game, it originally looked as though Isaiah Likely, who had a terrific game,
who looks like tight end one there over Mark Andrews, catching the ball in the back of the end zone,
looked like they were going to have a chance to tie up the game. Although
if you saw Harbaugh on the sideline,
he was ready to go for two. Never mind
this extra point nonsense for the one. We're going
for two and going for the win. You know, Jason
Brough at home was going, he stepped out.
He stepped out. That's not a
touchdown. He stepped out. I got eagle
eyes. I got eagle eyes.
Eagle eyes, Brough.
It was a good game.
It delivered on a lot of fronts.
You expect some of the rust and
some timing was off,
but overall, offenses
looked good, not great. Mahomes was good.
He was solid.
27-20. You got enough
points on the board. Taylor Swift
was there. Taylor Swift was indeed there.
Travis Kelsey had a very quiet game yesterday. He's a old and yeah I know I've got him in my fantasy league
so I was like come on like do something do something I'm worried about him retiring mid-season
by the way not even getting to propose to Taylor Swift at the end but I digress Derek Henry made
his debut for the Baltimore Ravens in the backfield he was kind of meh scored a touchdown
but only got the ball I I think, 12 or 13 times
and finished with about 43 yards.
So, Gurp from Surrey,
I noticed he texted in about the football game,
but then I realized that he had another text,
possibly from yesterday,
and he asked the question,
where do you guys think Daniel Sprong fits?
Not sure if you guys have talked about it yet
can't be bottom six can it well that's very interesting you asked that gerp although you
didn't ask us you asked someone else so what you don't trust us we'll take it don't trust us we'll
talk about daniel sprung daniel sprung and danton heinen were among the canucks that were skating in an informal skate yesterday.
I believe it was at UBC.
Heinen and Sprong each spoke.
Heinen is a hometown boy.
He signed with the Canucks.
He spent some time in Boston.
He has bounced around the league a little bit.
Started in Boston and ended up in Boston.
Now he's come to Vancouver
I spent I think he spent some time in Pittsburgh as well he did um and he was kind of his audio
was kind of understated uh you know he's he's a good Canadian boy he's he's real humble what was
funny was that the one time he got quasi excited was not when he was asked about himself and yes
he was a Canucks fan when he
was growing up he liked Alex Burrows he liked the Sedins yada yada yada um but he gave a pretty
good review of a guy that he knows and another new Canuck and I thought this was interesting to play
because here's Danton Heinen on Jake DeBrusque yeah I know Jake's uh he's unreal he's uh
he he can fly he gets up and down the ice like he Jake's, he's unreal. He's, he can fly.
He gets up and down the ice,
like you said, a shot.
He's got a knack for the net,
you know, but he can,
he has that all around game,
you know, he's got that greasy style
and, you know, kind of that,
you know, big, big game player.
So, yeah, it's great to have him here too.
So Daniel Sprong also spoke
and he was also asked a lot about his role.
And there's no secret that Daniel Sprong is a good shooter of the puck.
The question is everything else.
He can shoot the puck.
He can score goals.
Everything else remains up in the air for Daniel Sprong.
He's not being facetious either. It's honestly everything else remains up in the air for, for Daniel Sprong. He's not being facetious either.
It's honestly everything else.
Here's a,
what Dan,
with skating,
is that what you mean?
Like doesn't do line change as well.
Has trouble with the water bottle lid on the gate.
Everything else,
man.
Hockey IQ,
getting along with guys in the room.
Take your pick.
Yeah.
When you walk into the room,
it's like,
Daniel,
you got your skates on your arms.
You're in the game.
Come on,
man.
It's not where you are right now.
Yeah. It's just, we know you Come on, man. It's tough everywhere.
We know you can shoot the puck.
He's like, anyway.
Here's Daniel Sprung on Daniel Sprung.
Hopefully, you know, I can show I can play in the top six,
but I know the last two years I've done a really good job playing in that depth role,
and those numbers show for that, but I think there's more to my game,
and hopefully I can bring it out here. I like to shoot the puck. I think there's more to my game and hopefully I can bring it out here yeah I like you feel you can I like to shoot the puck I think that's one of my strengths but
again we're a team and you know the coach has an idea and a plan and you know we got to play the
system and whatever my role is going to be I'm ready to go so just so you know we're going to
get more of this audio as more and more Canucks start to skate informally and as they start to
come into town and uh speak with Batcher and all the other jackals that'll be at their skates um
training camp hasn't started yet but um it kind of has you know like players come to town early
they get to skate especially the new guys want to get to know their new teammates.
As for Heinen and Sprong,
I do like the potential of each of these guys.
Sure.
But I'm not sure
where it's going to go.
Heinen,
the thing I like about him,
he has speed.
He's fast.
Yep.
The Canucks need more of that.
Patrick Alvin recognized that
at the end of last season.
He said,
we need to get a little bit faster,
especially up front.
And they did that.
Sprong can really shoot the puck. He's got a friendship with friendship with elias petterson apparently they met a couple years ago on vacation and they've stayed in touch um and it sounds like daniel
sprong wants to round out his game so he doesn't find himself bouncing around the league anymore
he doesn't find himself after july 1st going why doesn't anyone want to why doesn't
anyone want to sign Daniel well yeah I mean it sounds like he had a really good chat with Rick
Talkett which helped convince him to come to Vancouver and I think Rick Talkett knowing Rick
Talkett probably probably said like hey man why have you bounced around so much if you want to
come to Vancouver I'll try and show you how you can play so that you'll gain
the coach the the trust of of of coaches so in seven years since turning pro this is the like
daniel sprung is a human suitcase he's gone wilkes-barre pittsburgh anaheim san diego
hershey washington seattle detroit that's a lot of different places to play hockey
over a seven-year career where you were
a fairly high draft pick,
right? It was a second-round pick, and
very productive in certain
spots at the NHL level, including the last
two years where he was 40-plus points,
and that one year in Seattle had 20-21
goals. It's interesting that
him and Heinen spoke on the same day, because
you talked about Heinen's speed, and that probably
lends itself, and his style of game lends itself to more versatility.
He's a penalty killer too.
Right.
To steal from your notes,
he could play up and down the lineup.
You could maybe masquerade as a top line guy
for a couple shifts.
Could play on the fourth line.
Sprong probably isn't that.
He probably aspires to being that.
That's what he talks about rounding out his game.
But Gurp brings up, it was Gurp, right?
Yeah.
And he brings up a good point.
Where does he fit?
Because he doesn't have the sort of jack of all trades, Swiss army knife profile that
maybe a guy like Heinen has.
Now, can he work on it?
Ideally, because one thing that everybody wants to be is versatile.
It gives you more options, gives you more guys to play with.
Gives you a longer career.
It doesn't have the coach looking down the bench and saying, I can't put you
out right now, or I can't put you out in this situation.
You just sit there for a while, right? And I think that's
maybe what Sprong's had. You're going in the press box
next game. You know where you're sitting.
So it's an interesting,
not a coincidence,
but it's interesting that
Sprong is well known
by Patrick Alveen and
Jim Rutherford and probably Rick Tockett.
I don't know how much Rick Tockett coached Daniel Sprong, but Sprong was drafted by the Penguins when Jim Rutherford was the general manager there.
And I was doing a lot of reading over the last few days about Daniel Sprong's time there and how it ended.
And it was interesting.
And we brought this up before when sprung signed patrick alveen in his quote in the press release said bringing in another
solid winger will be a boost for our club this season okay daniel has matured a lot as a player
okay daniel has matured a lot as a player and has shown he can contribute offensively when called
upon his addition up front
will give us better depth and should help with more balanced scoring throughout our forward group
so uh daniel has matured a lot i know i made a big deal of this the last time the press release
came out and a lot of people were like poking fun at me like classic you know vancouver media
parsing the comments i'm like well why do you think he said that, though? Because when Daniel Sprong was in Pittsburgh,
there was a lot of talk that he was not Mike Sullivan's kind of guy.
There was a lot of talk that he was a little bit like,
why am I not in the lineup?
I should be in the lineup.
I'm awesome.
I'm Daniel Sprong.
I'm a second-round pick.
And then eventually he gets traded, and he gets traded,
I think it was for the defenseman Marcus Pedersen.
Yep.
And Jim Rutherford was saying, like, this was a hard deal to make for me,
but we needed another young defenseman, and he liked Marcus Pedersen,
so they pulled the trigger on the deal.
And then he was asked, you know,
was there conflict between Mike sullivan and jim rutherford or mike sullivan
and daniel sprung and rutherford kind of downplayed that but when i reached out to a few people in
pittsburgh the response they gave me was he was not mike sullivan's type of guy it's funny because
sullivan had him healthy scratched a lot and that was a that was a team that had expectations
obviously they were
winning stanley cups in pittsburgh so you had to have um you know their young guys had to know how
to play because the stakes were higher at those times sprung leaves pittsburgh he bounces around
the league he does score some goals for teams like detroit and seattle and yet he finds himself
after free agency a few weeks after free agency nobody wants him nobody signed him goal scoring
is important some people say it's the most important thing in the nhl so why was this guy
not picked up he has this conversation with r Rick Talkett. He obviously has a friendship with Elias
Pedersen and he decides to come to Vancouver, but not for very much, for pretty much league minimum
and for one year. So I think this guy is going to be interesting to watch because there's no doubt
he has that shooting talent and watching the Canucks last year in the playoffs.
How many times watching their power play were you like, oh, God, it needs to get a guy to get the puck on that.
So to confirm, Taka did overlap with Sprong in Pittsburgh.
It was for a grand total of 18 games. And that was the year actually where Mike Johnson got fired.
Mike Sullivan took over. And I do recall the player, because he debuted as an 18-year-old,
which a lot of guys don't get to do, let alone second-round pick.
He's got a lot of talent.
He does.
And the dynamic that you were talking about was interesting,
because I talked to a couple different people
and went back and read some of the articles that were written at the time.
And it sounded as though that it was Rutherford making the push
for him to be on the roster and Sullivan pushing back and saying,
he's not ready.
Like he's just not ready.
Nice hair though.
And it was one of those things where I thought it might've caused the rift
between the coach and the general manager,
but ultimately Rutherford sort of,
I guess acquiesced and said,
yeah,
you know what?
I'm going to defer to Sullivan here.
Cause he's a good coach.
He's our guy.
He's a Stanley cup winner. And if Sprung's not ready by the coach's standard? I'm going to defer to Sullivan here because he's a good coach. He's our guy. He's a Stanley Cup winner.
And if Sprong's not ready by the coach's standard,
we're going to move him along.
So is he just not like defensively responsible?
Well, this was when he was 18.
I mean, this was almost a decade ago.
It's crazy to think the kid, he's not a kid anymore.
Yeah, he's not a complete player.
The teams don't pick him up right away.
Do coaches not trust him?
1,000%.
Yeah.
Well, yes.
Isn't that it?
I mean, it's as simple as that.
We've seen this story a million times before.
Why was he available this time of the year to the Canucks?
You could ask the same thing about Pugh Suter the season prior,
because when he came here, I was like,
I don't see why this guy would have lasted as long as he didn't.
Suter got a little bit more, though.
Sure.
But I'm just talking about the—
You got a multi-year deal.
I'm not trying to compare the player.
I'm just trying to compare the situation and scenario. scenario like it was a guy that was left over well i don't think
the scenario was all that the same i think suitor might have been asking for a little bit more yeah
you know like the kevin lankanen situation where why isn't this guy signed apparently he's a good
goal i think he was he was he didn't want to go somewhere where he's going to sign for one year
in the league minimum right so daniel sprung ends up doing that in vancouver i don't know what role where he's going to fit
i mean it's gonna have to work it might not work at all i mean it probably won't
right it was he's bounced around sure he's bounced around a lot maybe he's a guy that um if there's
injuries well perfect we got this offensive guy that can come in and help on the power play.
But are you going to have a line of Pedersen, DeBrusque, and Sprong?
I guess you could.
Here's the thing.
You could.
If you're going to look at one guy as a sort of cautionary tale
about not playing hockey the right way
or not doing the things that are non-negotiables for Talkit,
he plays in Calgary now.
His name is Andre Kuzmenko. We've seen guys that are high-negotiables for talk it uh he plays in calgary now his name
is andre kuzmenko like we've seen guys that are high octane high offensive performers that you
on paper it's like they can put the puck in the back of the net with regularity but and you can
have lots of conversations and be like oh okay i will commit to that sure you can say that they
have the same old conversation if the guy's only offensive but he can't fit in the top six it's
like well this guy doesn't belong in the bottom six because he can't play defense.
And he doesn't kill penalties.
So what do you do with him?
That's why I think he might be right when he said,
like, it probably won't work out.
I mean, if you're making odds on it,
I'm not saying that I don't like the deal
because it is completely low risk.
It can be buried in the NHL if you want it to be.
But I look at the depth of talent that they have at forward,
the versatility that the certain wingers have,
and it goes back to one central question
which Gurp asked off the top,
like, where does he fit?
And it might not be that,
you know, maybe he improves his game,
maybe he can score,
but it's not necessarily what you're doing,
it's where you fit a lot of the times, right?
Where can I play you?
Or more specifically, where can't I play you?
I hope he does fit.
It'd be cool if him and Pedersen
have some chemistry together.
I think they've both been described
as kind of like different cats.
And if you hear Daniel Sprong tell the story,
they met on vacation a few years ago.
I don't know where the vacation was
and they ended up going out to dinner and they ended up staying in touch so maybe they can work
together on some stuff who knows um but i think these guys i mean we really are starting the
hockey season when we're talking this in depth on daniel sprung and danton hein and there's lots
of new guys that we're going to talk about and where do they fit and where do they not
a lot of it will be based on how training camp goes how preseason goes the injuries etc so
I'm curious to see how both those guys pan out but I think Danton Heinen is probably your best
bet to be an everyday player he may not be as flashy as a guy like Daniel Sprong,
but I think he's going to add speed.
I think he's going to add penalty-killing ability,
and I think he can go up and down the lineup.
I do want to, one final thing in what happened
before we go to break.
We mentioned it off the top.
I do want to reiterate and give kudos to Ryan Gould,
who, you know, my heart was broken
when I found out that he got the call
to the Scottish national team after nearly a decade away.
And that means the dreams of him being Canadian were dashed.
He came on in the 70th minute yesterday.
We mentioned they lost 3-2 to Poland, but he came on in the 70th minute, played 20 plus added and had the most chance creation per minute based on the advanced stats that came out after the match. And I really hope,
I really hope that the manager,
Steve Clark takes a look at this and says,
what we're doing as a federation,
trotting out the same old guys in the same old spots is just getting us
lousy results.
And we need to try something new.
I took a chance by calling the guy up from Vancouver.
I took a chance,
giving him a cap after 10 years away
and then i gave him an opportunity and he thrived he went out there and it didn't just fill the
numbers he made things happen i hope he starts on the weekend they play portugal by the way they
play ronaldo in portugal and ronaldo scored nations league going on right now yeah yeah it's
uefa nations league so i hope that ryan gold now the can dream is dashed, he becomes a fixture of the squad.
I'm going to put you on the spot here.
Great.
How much did Stuart Armstrong play for Scotland?
Yesterday?
No, no, no.
No, just in general.
Oh.
How much has he played for them?
Oh, he's been capped, right?
Yeah, like 50 plus times.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But he barely played at Euro, but it was partially because
his last season at Southampton, he finished with an injury.
He basically focused on trying to get fit for Euro.
He came on as a substitute in one match in the group stage.
Do you think he'll be honest about the state of Scottish soccer?
If we ask him?
I was thinking about that.
I was thinking like.
You should ask him, right?
Yeah.
Because in some ways people are.
My gut answer.
It's not as low as it has been.
But my initial instinct would be like,
he's not going to say anything detrimental
because he still wants to get back into the squad.
Steve Clark's going to be like,
did you trash us on Vancouver Radio on Friday?
And he's like, yes.
But he would be more Steve Clark's type of player, wouldn't he?
Yeah, because he's been around for forever.
Clark's capped him like 50 plus times.
And he was a fixture prior to this Euro.
You know, they call him a box-to-box midfielder. Yes, he's a chance creator like Ryan plus times. And he was a fixture prior to this Euro. You know,
they call him a box to box midfielder.
Yes.
He's a chance creator like Ryan gold.
And then one year he scored a ton of goals.
You know what?
I was asking a guy who follows Scottish football far closer than I,
and he said,
he's got a great profile for Vancouver.
Like he's going to be the kind of guy that will create a lot of things from that
midfield position, allowing guys
like Gould and White to
have more chances to finish, as opposed to
maybe you don't need Gould to be as creative
as he's been. He can put on his finishing boots,
as they say, and maybe score a few more goals.
Anyway, congratulations to Ryan Gould.
Didn't go well for Scotland,
but he had an
impressive debut for Scotland yesterday.
You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough.
You're listening to the best of Halford and Brough.
Ask us anything.
Which new Canuck are you most excited to see in training camp?
Which, by the way, is now just 13 days away.
It's Jake DeBrusque.
There's a lot riding on this sign.
Let's make no mistake about that. there's a lot riding on this sign let's make no mistake about that
there's a lot riding on this one i mean aside from the fact that there's a lot of term attached to
him this is you know it the i don't think you can have a jake debrux conversation in the preseason
and training camp without including elias petters, because it seems like he said it publicly.
The club has said it publicly.
They're not even trying to dance around it.
Like we are bringing in Jake to breast to play with Elias Pettersson,
given how Pettersson season ended.
And we've gone over it in great detail here.
He's going to be vitally important.
You know,
there were a pretty interesting breakdown that I was reading on NHL.com
about some advanced analytics on debrusk's
game uh interestingly enough among the league leaders or league leaders in like high danger
shots on goal high danger chances suggesting i guess that he while maybe erratic in terms of the
consistency of production he did show a good consistency in being able to create
high danger chances which you're going to want from a winger playing with a creative player spots
yeah pretty much and a guy that's playing with petterson um who let's be honest oftentimes was
saddled with wingers who either couldn't get into those spots didn't have the iq or the speed or
whatever got into them and then they were oh it'sale. I wish I wasn't here, right?
I wish I was not in this high danger spot right now.
So I mean, for me, the answer to Alistair's Ask Us Anything,
which New Canuck are you most excited to see in training camp?
It's DeBrusque by a mile.
Patrick, the ice cream man, texts in.
Good morning, fellas.
Ask Us Anything.
I hosted a poker game for my 40th birthday last week
Still not a sport prat
And I was shamed by a group of friends
For never having watched any of the
Star Wars movies
I was further ridiculed
With every classic movie that was
Named and I hadn't seen
Any of them
Shawshank, Top Gun, etc
Wow With all that
said, can you come up with a list
of the top 10 movies that every guy should see
by the time they're 40? I've binged
all the movies I mentioned earlier
now. That is hilarious that it took you to
your 40th birthday
to realize that I should
really check out this
Star Wars franchise where
Shawshank Redemption or Top Gun,
we're not going to come up with a list of 10.
It's impossible to come up with a list.
I can see A-Dog just frothing at the mouth
about the possibility of putting this list together too.
Well, I mean, there's so many like obvious answers.
What genres do we go by?
And honestly, it's not like a top 10,
but like off the top of my head,
like in terms of most famous,
Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, Alien, Terminator 2.
And then you turn 14.
Like Die Hard, Goodfellas.
I'm going through like all the genres now.
So it's funny you brought up Goodfellas.
Honestly, you could list like 50.
Cool.
You could list like 100.
It's funny.
Mighty Ducks.
Ghostbusters.
Okay.
Can I talk?
It's funny you mentioned Goodfellas because we were on the golf course yesterday,
and then we were playing some tunes, as you do on the golf course now,
and Eric Clapton's Layla started playing.
And my buddy in the cart was saying,
I still remember seeing Goodfellas in the theater.
The piano coda.
Yeah.
He's hanging by a meat hook.
He's all frozen up. The piano coda. Yeah. Yeah. He's hanging by a meat hook. He's all frozen up.
Johnny roast beef.
But then if you haven't seen those movies,
you're like, yeah, this is a good song.
Well, I have, I don't know.
It's just the references that you would miss
in everyday conversations.
I think you almost owe it to yourself
to just go watch those movies.
You know how challenging...
You'll understand so many more pop culture references
if you just rip through them quickly.
Do you know how challenging this show is
to listen to all the time?
But when you don't know Simpsons references,
people...
I've got a friend of mine who didn't watch The Simpsons.
He's like,
I have no idea what you guys are talking about
a third of the time. I've never seen The Simpsons didn't watch The Simpsons. He's like, I have no idea what you guys are talking about a third of the time.
I've never seen The Simpsons.
Right.
So there you go.
You're also young, though.
So you're kind of excused because you're way past the glory years.
Quick aside, because you mentioned your golf trip yesterday.
How was Jack in the Box?
Your scouting report was accurate, my friend.
Yeah, I knew it.
Very disappointing.
Very disappointing, eh?
Very disappointing. Did it make you hate yourself Yeah, I knew it. I knew it. Very disappointing. Very disappointing, eh? Very disappointing.
Very disappointing.
Did it make you hate yourself right after you ate it?
No, no, it can't.
That can't possibly happen anymore than I already hate myself.
Self-loathing is pretty much checked.
Yeah, and then I went to play golf.
It was just very disappointing.
And the funny thing was, I'm sitting in there in the jack-in-the-box around around Birch Bay and it's dead in there.
Yep.
I know exactly what you're talking about.
Totally dead.
I actually had to drive around this kind of
massive shopping center to actually, I was
like, where is the Jack in the Box?
And it's hidden.
It's hidden.
There was no one in there except for me.
I went in there and I was like, I'll have a
sourdough Jack.
And they're like, really?
And I'll, no.
And I will get a medium fries and a medium
drink.
And it came to $15 and 32 cents US.
So already.
$70 Canadian.
So it's already, I'm like, uh, I don't know
if I can afford this.
So I ate it and the, the, the love was gone,
man.
The love.
That's exactly it.
It just kind of got thrown at me.
I opened the sandwich.
The bun was like
too crispy almost to the point of burnt and then so i'm sitting there i'm going i wonder who owns
jack in the box like i was gonna write a letter or something and then i realized then i realized
it's publicly held stock symbol jack oh and i was like i wonder how the stock price has been doing terrible yeah that's not surprising terrible it's almost like it's fallen 50 or whatever in the last
year and so i need an activist investor to go in there and shake that place up you need no no maybe
i'm the guy they need to bring it back to the glory days what he should have done the e coli
glory days after that right right yeah no no Not the E. coli glory days. After that. Right.
Right.
Yeah.
No, no, not those ones.
Just forget about those.
No, what he should have done is gone to Denny's and had one of their new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dishes because they have a bunch of Beetlejuice themed dishes at Denny's in the US right now.
I saw this.
They have the say it three times slam, the afterlife melt, the Beetlejuicy burger and
a cookies and scream shake.
If I hear one more thing about this
Beetlejuice movie,
I haven't had a
Mount Brough in a
long, long time.
Can you guys all
recognize that?
It's my goal.
I have been working
on it.
I haven't had a
Mount Brough, but
if you bring up
I'm going to try
to destroy years of
therapy.
I'm going to say
Beetlejuice three
times soon to come
and kill you.
Okay, we got to
focus here.
It's the Moj.
I did not eat four
burgers. Yes, it's
the Moj. I don't want to go to Winnipeg.
Nobody wants to go to Winnipeg. Yes,
I love food. It's the Moj.
I went online and kind of did a little surfing.
It's a millennia.
Yes, it's the Moj.
Halpert's fine, but, you know, Brumfus is grumpy all the time. Moj, Moj, Moj, to Melania. Moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat. It's the moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat.
It's the moat.
801 on a Friday.
Happy Friday, everybody.
Halford Brough, Sportsnet 650.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if someone new to the city or the market,
like Stuart Armstrong, for example, new member of the Vancouver Whitecaps,
had to wait on hold while we played that song.
You're like, what have I got myself into?
I miss Inverness.
Is this MLS?
Go back to Dundee, like now?
I'm not prepared for any of this.
You are listening to the Halford & Brough Show

No.
Oh, okay.
It's just a place in Scotland.
It's way up north.
I've been there.
It's beautiful.
Yeah, yeah.
I know it's very northern.
It's beautiful.
Yeah.
Where was I again?
Yes.

Kintec.
To the phone lines we go.
Moj joins us now, I believe from Montreal, on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Good morning, sore feet. What are you waiting for? Kintec. To the phone lines we go. Moj joins us now, I believe from Montreal
on the Halford and Brough
show on Sportsnet 650.
Good morning, Moj.
Well, I better be in Montreal
because it'd be a hell of a flight
from Vancouver to Montreal
and make kickoff tonight.
I was going to say,
you better get on the tarmac, buddy.
Apparently you did a hit
from the tarmac
when I was away,
but I digress.
Shortest hit in our station's history.
Two minutes.
No, no, no.
It wasn't even two minutes.
It was probably like about, I'd probably say like 45 seconds, maybe a minute.
So it was up there for the shortest hit of all time,
which is held by David Pratt with David Duvall, the golfer.
How to remind us of how that went again.
So we had a producer, Eric Stansfield, who'd been getting,
he'd been chasing Duvall for a long time through Nike.
And the whole gist of the interview was to talk about this new club set that Nike had coming out.
He was promoting everything.
And I mean, having done those type of interviews many times, I mean, you go in,
you talk about the Nike stuff or whatever, and then you get into maybe what's happening with the guy's career.
And then at the end, you wrap up with whatever they're promoting, right?
You kind of sandwich everything.
So we get Duvall on the whole gist of it.
You got to talk about the Nike golf clubs that he's promoting, blah, blah, blah.
Pratt, first question out of the box.
David, your game's going south.
What happened?
And Duvall starts answering the question.
He's about 20 seconds in and all of a sudden goes,
guys, I got to go.
Sorry, but I got to go, guys.
And he hung up.
Well, the producer phones Stansfield back up and gives him an earful.
Oh, wow.
Stansfield looking at Pratt like, what the hell are you doing?
Our audience wanted to know, right?
So it was close.
Oh, I remember the days when the Vancouver audience
couldn't get enough of David Duvall.
So Pratt was absolutely bang on there. It was close. Oh, I remember the days when the Vancouver audience couldn't get enough of David Duvall,
so Pratt was absolutely bang on there. It was the golf story that was hanging over the city.
Moj, here's a good question for you.
Could you make the argument that tonight's game
between the Lions and the Alouettes,
in terms of hype, in terms of storylines,
is the biggest in the CFL this season?
Ooh, I don't know if you could make the hype that it's the biggest of the season, but probably
I wouldn't have a problem saying it's the biggest of the week, but yeah, you're probably,
you know, here's the thing.
If the Lions had come in in this game on a four-game win streak rather than just coming off
you know snapping a five-game losing streak probably right but i think there's a lot of
recency bias right now so yeah you know given the circumstances yeah this could be a great cup
preview you never know i mean the trip to victoria did wonders for the lions and what it did it gave
the team three days three nights on the four days, whatever way you want to calculate
it. And it gave the guys an opportunity
to kind of recharge and
just kind of hang out and just
do stuff. It wasn't your typical road
trip. And guys talked about
that prior to the game. And, you know,
we talked to the coaches and it was just
a great experience and allowed guys to
kind of reconnect. And remember, it's a guy in the
CFL season. They're 11 games in for a lot of the guys that are first-year players
out of college.
Their season's already over.
So it's rejuvenated this team, and, you know,
they made a couple personnel changes.
Obviously, Matthew Betts helped, moving TJ Lee to linebacker
kind of gave the defense a real spark.
You know, Gary Peters and other guys have talked about this being
the best configuration that they have in terms of personnel,
the way they're set up now,
because there's been a constant shuffling of the deck all year long.
So it's going to be real interesting to see what happens tonight in Montreal.
I'm really intrigued to see what happens.
Do we see the Lions team to play against Ottawa last week?
And if that team shows up, we should have a hell of a football game.
Or do we see a team that maybe reverts back to the form that they showed
in those five games
I don't think they will I think they're going to have a really good game tonight if they come out
with a win it wouldn't surprise me at all what's the bigger strength for Montreal the offense or
the defense I know this is a tough question yeah okay it's not a tough question and I'll say this
because their defense led by Darnell Sankey it's just it an unbelievable defense. They're playing great. And what it does, I think it kind of masks some of Montreal's lack of ability
to push the ball downfield.
If you look at Montreal's yards after catch totals, I mean,
they're just ridiculous.
Walter Fletcher leads the league.
I think he has – Julio told me last night, whatever,
I'm just going to rattle off some numbers.
They'll be in the neighborhood.
It won't be right bang on.
But he has like 461 yards receiving, like 422
yards after the catch. I mean, it's
just ridiculous. So what they do, they love
the short passing game. They love to hit
those receivers with the hit screens.
They love to hit Fletcher out of the back
field and put
the ball in the athlete's hands. Now,
if you get them
into a track meet where maybe they're down
by 14 points or 20 points or whatever,
now they've got to push the ball downfield, which I don't think is Cody Fajardo's strength.
So that defense really complements the offense and allows the offense to kind of nickel and dime you to death.
So, you know, that's the key, and that's a big if.
Can you put points on that defense and make it into a track meet?
Nobody's been able to do it, so they have continued success.
How was the experience in Victoria?
It was unbelievable.
I haven't been to Victoria probably in about 10 or 15 years.
I can't remember the last time I went to Victoria.
Probably to have tea at the Empress?
No, we were, I think it was called the grand pacific or something like that
okay and it was like we're right there in the harbor and i'll tell you one thing it was like
you know our president duane reno told us it's going to be like a mini gray cup and it was i
mean we were doing you know shows we were doing appearances it was it was busy but it was a lot
of fun um i even did a horse and carriage ride, if you saw that on the Lions Twitter account,
which was a lot of fun.
Did you really?
Yeah, I did.
Who did you do it with, by yourself?
It was the driver, Tally Ho.
We did a little horse, and they did a little tour through Victoria,
and we talked about the game a little bit, and, you know,
I made a really good point.
You know, I tied it all in.
I said, hey, if you want to win, you have to have the horses up front.
So there you go.
Did you tell the horse lady
that the game is won in the trenches?
Yeah, yeah.
I asked the horse if he could play line,
whether he could play offensive line or defensive line.
I asked him right at the end of the video.
He was a good dude.
We're speaking of Bob the Moj.
Rusty!
Bob the Moj Marjanovic here
on the Alfred and Russ Show on Sportsnet 650.
Moj, what did you think of Matthew Betts' performance on the weekend?
I like to think that even though it wasn't a whirlwind,
he did have a sack, but it wasn't like he totally took over.
I feel like he might have given the entire unit a shot in the arm,
a little bit more energy, because the defense played very well in Victoria.
Yeah.
I'm going to tell you a good bet story.
So after the game, now you've got to realize playing at Royal Athletic Park
was pretty spartan.
And the Lions, what they did is they gave the Red Blacks all the amenities,
so to speak.
They had the locker rooms in the stadium.
They had, you know, their play-by-play guy was in a booth.
We were in a scaffold.
Their bench was in the shade.
The Lions were in the sun.
Just about every little thing the Lions could do to, you know,
satisfy the reflects they did.
So as a result, the Lions had very, very Spartan amenities.
And what I mean by Spartan, I mean, you know,
it's like the old Empire Field days.
Guys are changing in trailers.
They had about three or four trailers set up in one of the end zones.
And after the game, post-game, they actually had guys,
like they had these tents that somehow, some way,
they hooked up showers in, right, like temporary showers.
So guys were showering in tents.
So one of the members of the organization goes,
he goes, think about Betts.
He goes, four days ago, he's in the NFL where he did everything.
And four days later, he's showering in a tent.
Four days later, he's like, are we camping?
What's going on here?
Some sort of music festival broke out here.
It was a one-time deal, obviously.
But, you know, guys didn't mind it for the one time, I guess.
But, you know, I thought Betts played pretty well.
I mean, given the fact he has been playing football, right?
So there's a bit of an adjustment in the sense that you have to give up that yard off the ball.
But when you play in that first game, you play with a lot of juice, right?
So that's the thing that I think got Betts through.
And he's had a week practicing.
Hey, playing in Montreal, I think he'll have some juice in the tank again tonight.
I mean, this is his hometown.
He's going to have a lot of family and friends here,
so I think he'll be ready to go as well.
Dan texts into the show, I saw the horse and buggy video.
The Tally Ho just recently announced that the horse has retired.
Did you cause that much?
Well, she's getting up there, so, you know, maybe.
We haven't asked us anything here from Jay and Poco.
Hold on one sec.
We're in Montreal.
We've got to be talking about food.
Because last night's late night food experience was rather unique.
But so anyways, what's the question?
Hold on.
Okay, well, we've got lots of time here, Moj.
I know you normally only do three-minute interviews with us,
but we've got another 10 minutes here, okay?
So, Jay and Poco hasn't asked us anything.
It's not food related, but we can get to that.
Ask us anything.
At the start of the CFL season, did you think there was any chance that three
Eastern teams would have better records than any Western team?
No, I didn't.
You know, at the start of the year, I said this at the start of the year,
I said BC and Winnipeg would regress.
I think Saskatchewan was going to get better.
I thought Edmonton was going to get better.
I wasn't a big fan of Calgary getting better.
And that's kind of played out, but it's played out more to the extreme than I thought.
I didn't think BC and Winnipeg would regress to being, at this point, 500 teams, right?
I thought they would go from teams that won say 13 or 14 games to maybe
teams that won 11 maybe 12 right or maybe 10 um i didn't see them as 500 teams so um i kind of
predicted what was going to happen but i just didn't predict it to this extreme um so that's
the way i kind of look at it yeah so and obviously the east has taken advantage of it okay now tell us your eating plans for Montreal oh what was this late night food last night I
want to know about this well first off we went down to Oldport we went to because T-Mart's with
us of course so I treated T-Mart I said T-Mart we're going to go for Portuguese right okay so
we went to this place called Solmar in Oldport and Oldport's just tremendous. Then we went down
right to the first street on Oldport. I don't know what it is. We went to a rooftop bar called
Auberg, which was tremendous. You know, nice little view of the city and all that. Then Ubered back up
to the top of Crescent Street. There's a bar there called Stogie's. Well, it's a cigar bar.
So a bunch of the lion's daappers were in there and we had
some cigars. And, you know, the
thing is, I've been losing weight. I've been spinning like every
day. I've got to go down to the gym and spin today.
And I've been losing all this weight. And like
last night, you know, I ate sensibly.
It wasn't that bad. And
then at the end of the night, it's like, hey,
we're going to La Belle Provence, which is
like some sort of fast food place on the way
to the hotel.
And they've got hot dogs there.
And I'm like, I got to have a hot dog.
Like in Montreal, you got to have the hot dogs, right?
Because they steam them.
They do such a great job.
So I ordered the Michigan.
I don't know.
I didn't even know what the Michigan was.
I said, like, one was a grilled hot dog.
The other is a Michigan.
I go, give me the Michigan.
So I get the Michigan.
It's basically a chili dog, right?
And I was like, meh.
Meanwhile, Steve Chang, the lion photographer, he had the grilled hot dog.
And I'm looking at this thing and going, that's what I want.
Because it was steamed, the bun.
I go, how is it?
He goes, it's unreal.
So then I got just like a grilled hot dog, right?
So then we're walking home.
Are you aware of where the closest hospital is in Montreal?
Just in case you need this.
So then we're walking home.
And guess where we walk by?
Dunn's.
So now we've got to by? Dunn's.
So now we got to go into Dunn's, right?
At like, I don't know,
two o'clock, 1.30 in the morning.
So we go into the Dunn's
and now order a smoked meat sandwich, right?
I'm just thinking my diet is just like,
it's just crashing right now.
So how to smoke meat at Dunn's
is like, I don't know, 1.30 or so.
You had not one, but two hot dogs
and then you chased two hot dogs with a smoked meat sandwich.
Hey, I didn't eat the bread.
This is like the Moj Centurion or something.
I didn't eat the bread.
Too many carbs.
So today, there's this Portuguese place at Menard.
David Menard told a bunch of guys.
Everybody got hooked on it last year.
And a bunch of guys are going up there today from the staff.
We're probably going to go up around 1 o'clock or so.
But this is Portuguese place.
It has this tremendous chicken.
Lineups out the door the whole nine yards.
So there's a real quandary today because at some point I'd like to get the Schwartz's.
Because I always get the Schwartz's in Montreal.
My guy Frank takes care of me. So I've got to get the Schwartzzes because I always get the Schwartzes in Montreal. My guy Frank takes care of me.
So I got to get the Schwartzes and the
chicken plates before kickoff.
It's going to be a bit of a quandary
trying to figure out how to do this. I was thinking
maybe like I was telling Baker, Matt Baker,
Matt, the last meeting guy, I go, go there,
pick up the chicken. And then I was talking to the guy,
do you think the chicken will hold by the time we
take off so I can have it after the game?
And everyone was kind of like, no, probably not.
So what I'm thinking of doing is having maybe like the smoked meat at around
12, or having the chicken, say at 12, go to this restaurant,
Popeye's, Schwartz's before the game, have the smoked meat sandwich,
because that'll hold a little better.
Maybe I could have that at halftime or after the game.
And then the other thing too, apparently the Press Bowl, I know this,
the Press Box food in Montreal is top notch,
and they also serve hot dogs at halftime.
So it's a real dilemma.
Is there a Moo Moo shop that you can visit in Montreal?
Because I think you might need to wear that coming home.
Oh, I'm telling you.
It's just like I said, the diet's gone out the window.
But hey, when you're in Montreal.
And the other thing, too, is CFL schedule.
Like, why can't we come to Montreal five times in two years?
Because you'd die.
You would die.
They'd run out of shaved meat, apparently.
Moj, this has been a whirlwind.
Damn.
Enjoy the game if you make it through it.
It's going to be quite a good one,
and I'm sure everyone listening to your call will be also praying for you.
I'm proud of you, man.
I am proud of you.
There's not that many people
that'll go hot dogs,
meat sandwich,
meat sandwich, hot dogs
in a 24-hour window.
And then wonder,
I wonder what the press box food
is going to be like.
How do I get a chicken
wedged in there somewhere?
It's good.
It's good.
Thanks for doing this, Moj.
Enjoy the game.
All right, fellas.
Have a great weekend.
Yeah, have a good one.
Cheers.
That's Bob the Moj Marjanovic
on a meat...
He's a meat seeker right now on the Alfred and Brett show.
There it is.
On Sportsnet.
Meat seeker.
Sportsnet 650.
Some people are asking if the copy got changed on that read
because I no longer say meat seeker.
I say introducing seeker.
That was my change.
