It's a Fiesta Friday here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Halford & Brough of the Morning is brought to you by Vancouver Honda,
Vancouver's premier destination for Honda customers.
They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can help with anything you're looking for.
Sales, financing, service, four parts.
So in the Sportsnet 650 studios, we have a live monitor of the stream that you can see on Sportsnet Plus
if you want to look at the very handsome, well, moderately handsome Halford and Brough show. With the
monitor in the studio, Adog
controls it, and he's left
the little arrow cursor
on my face.
It's gone now. People can't see that.
I know people can't see it, but I can see it.
So I'm wiping at my face to
get rid of it. Get that arrow off my cheek. Looks like you've
got a fly on your face or something? Yeah, and I just can't.
Now it's gone. Adog moved it. What are you looking at, Adog? I'm like, get that arrow off my cheek. Looks like you've got like a fly on your face or something. Yeah, and I just can't. Now it's gone. A-Dog moved it. What are you looking at,
A-Dog?
I'm doing stuff with it again. It's just
on a delay. You'll see.
I knew that this would pave the way for some sort of
crazy Friday hijinks.
Don't mess me up. We're live on the air.
Do it at the break, okay? Do not mess me up while we're on the air.
Nice kids in the hall reference. I like that.
Thank you.
Have we got AJ on the line? We do. Let's go now to the phone lines. AJ from that. Thank you. Okay. I thought somebody caught that. Have we got AJ on the line?
We do.
Let's go now to the phone lines.
AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway,
the best pizza place in the world,
joins us here on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
What up, AJ?
What is going on?
This is like my favorite thing of the week.
This is great.
I have intel.
You need better things in your week.
Yeah, one, definitely need better things going.
But I got intel that you haven't asked us anything for us.
I do.
So I,
I long story short,
whatever I watched miracle this week.
Okay.
And,
and I want to know if you could go back in time and see any sporting event
live,
what would it be?
This is a good one.
We've done hybrid versions of this one before.
So you know what?
I was always looking back on one of the massive Muhammad Ali fights.
Oh, that's a good one.
That's a good one.
Yeah.
Like, what?
Thrilling Manila, right.
Right.
Yeah.
That's what I mean.
Rumble in the jungle.
One iconic moment.
Right. Exactly. I feel white I mean. Rumble in the jungle? One iconic moment. Right, exactly.
The chunk.
I feel white.
Yeah, right.
But think about it.
Those are like iconic moments.
You'll never get that again, especially in boxing, right?
Like boxing is such a peripheral sport now.
But remember, being the heavyweight champion of the world
used to be a huge thing.
How about being in the fight when Tyson bityson bit holyfield's ear i wouldn't mind
yeah that probably won't happen that's a good one they try i mean it's got to be some hockey
ones for you guys too i would assume right i mean just things that you could oh well i mean the
obvious one for me is what you know that i talk about it all the time can Canada Cup. I would have to go to Hamilton, but it was in 1987.
The Canada Cup.
I mean, that would just be
an incredible moment.
One of the greatest
hockey games ever played,
and it just so happened to be in
Hamilton, unfortunately. So you want to fly out of there
right away. But remember,
you can just teleport there, because this is
past reference, so you'll be
in and out. Canucks 1 would have been
game 6, 94, I think.
I would have liked to have been in the crowd for that.
That's fair. That was pretty lucky, right?
Hey, I did, on another note,
I did hit my parlay last week.
Yeah, so we laughed.
So I feel like...
I almost feel like you...
I didn't know you were taking the Broncos with the points.
I thought your parlay was going to be a money line.
And I'm like, oh, that's interesting.
The Broncos with the points, though.
I get it.
And that was a nice backdoor cover.
Wasn't it six and a half?
It was six and a half.
I know.
How nice was that?
Do you have another one?
But I do have one this weekend.
And these are all money lines.
It's Vikings, Seattle, Broncos.
The Broncos have the Steelers.
That's the Russell Wilson.
The Broncos have the Steelers.
The Russell Wilson revenge game.
Okay.
Interesting.
And the Vikings.
I know this is an outlier, but they got Sam Fram.
But I don't know.
I like it at home. I love it. What's the spread in the Vikings and Niners game? I know this is an outlier, but they got Sam Fram, but I don't know.
I like it at home.
How many – what's the spread in the Vikings-Niners game?
Six and a half.
Okay.
You're getting some money.
Listen, $25 bet gets you like $430.
Okay.
I'd be careful of the Seahawks game.
I wouldn't – it's three and a half, I think, is the line on three.
I like the Seahawks, though.
I thought they played well.
I don't know. I mean, I don't even know what three and a half, I think, is the line on three. I like the Seahawks, though. I thought they played well. I don't know.
I mean, I don't even know what happened to Cincinnati, thankfully.
Thankfully, I had them in my survivor, so I'm out.
So I don't have to worry about it anymore.
Yeah, they took care of the survivor pool for me.
Okay, if anyone wants to watch any of these games on Sunday,
what's going on at AJ's on Sunday?
It's going to be great.
You know what?
Now we're getting to this beautiful time of sport. I mean, baseball is
cranking. I mean, September is going
to be awesome.
And then, yeah, Sunday, happy hour all day
and football all day. So
come and enjoy. It's going to be great. Beautiful. Thanks,
buddy. Thank you, everybody. Have a wonderful weekend.
Yeah, you too. That's AJ from AJ's Pizza
on East Broadway. Try AJ's
traditional New York pizza or
sink into Andy's favorite,
their famous Detroit Ronnie pizza.
Only at AJ's Pizza.
Order online at ajs.pizza.
That's right.
The internet has suffixes now that are.pizza.
It's pretty cool.
Okay, let's go through some of these games
before we talk to Moj at 7.30.
We can also procure and pluck some Ask Us Anythings
from the Dunbar Lumber text message in basket.
I kind of highlighted five games from this weekend that I'm pretty interested in.
The first one is the Seahawks game, but we've talked about that at length.
The Seahawks are three-point road favorites.
I think it's three and a half.
You think it moved to three and a half?
Yeah.
Okay.
I don't expect this game to be exciting.
I'm just going to go out there and say it.
Every Seahawks game is exciting
because it's always infuriating in the first half.
At the end, it may be exciting.
The total on this one is 38 and a half,
so you're not expecting a lot of offense
coming out of this one.
I'll be very curious to see if they can throw the ball
more effectively than they did against Denver,
but that game, you know, it's...
Okay, well, hype the listeners up for a good game then.
Okay, here's what I'm going to do this season.
I am going to make amends to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
and Baker Mayfield.
I was a jerk last year.
They don't want you on their bandwagon.
I'm not going to be on their bandwagon.
I'm just going to give them the respect that they deserve
because I was a jerk last year.
I can admit when I'm a jerk.
Well, the odds makers
are being a jerk too.
Unlike some people
I host the show with.
I can admit when I'm being a jerk.
So the odds makers have
the Detroit Lions
as seven and a half point favorites
over the visiting
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
despite Baker Mayfield
throwing four touchdowns
last week.
Did you know that
Baker Mayfield with his passer rating of 146.4,
was the highest rated quarterback in the NFL last week?
You know, as soon as you flipped, the Lions are going to beat them by like 80.
Am I playing 4D chess in this game?
Who's to say?
You know what?
That tee, because I watched a good chunk of their game last weekend
where Baker Mayfield was terrific and they were lighting it up offensively.
Look, that game last year in the playoffs against Detroit in Detroit,
that was the game that sort of very quietly changed my mind.
I wasn't going to admit it out loud, but they put up a really good fight
in that game.
You remember that game, right?
They just kept coming back and coming back, and Mayfield kept making throws,
and he would stand in the pocket and take a hit.
They've got good receivers.
Godwin's really good.
Evans is really good.
They're a good offense.
I think this is going to be a really fun game.
I do not like Detroit at that big of an –
I'd make Tampa my lock of the week, to be perfectly honest,
because I'm all in.
I am all in.
I think Detroit is such a good team that they could easily –
could you not just see them winning by 10?
No.
Okay.
No.
I couldn't.
What an imagination you've got.
Nope.
I don't like to envision this.
Possibly fathom it.
You know what?
This team that a lot of people are expected to go to the Super Bowl,
I cannot fathom them beating a mediocre team like Tampa Bay
by double digits at home.
Seems impossible.
Playoff team from a year ago.
Improve.
Also, last week.
Maybe I'm going to be the Tampa Bay hater now.
Hand off the baton to me.
Why are you so rude to Baker Mayfield?
I'll say this.
Last week, that Rams game, like, I thought it was a bit disappointing
for Detroit to have to take that game to overtime because the Rams, remember,
suffered two major injuries on their offensive line.
They lost Puka Nakua right at the beginning of the game, and yet they still managed to find a way to get offense on that team.
And they did a good job of stopping the Lions' run game
and then the quiet part until overtime when they ran the ball down their throats.
There's a few games that I'm looking forward to for different reasons.
One in the SAD department, I would say Giants at Commanders could be interesting
because nobody hates their team.
Oh, there's going to be a lot of people that watch it.
Classic NFC East matchup.
It is.
I don't think any fan base hates their team more than New York Giants fans right now.
And Daniel Jones has to be a lot better than he was in week one.
He's got a chance to do that because he's playing Washington.
And Jaden Daniels has to be better than he was in week one.
Although the pressure on him, you're going to give him a little more rope
because he's a rookie and Daniel Jones is not.
But neither of those teams had a good start to the season.
So two big market teams, large fan bases,
although Washington's has been dwindling for a number of years.
So I'll be curious about that one from the sad perspective.
Bengals and Chiefs is the Sunday afternoon game.
That's the marquee game of the weekend for me.
You talk about all of a sudden the Bengals being like,
oh, wait a minute.
Are we going to start the season 0-2 because we kind of blew it
against the Patriots?
Now we're going to go in against the Chiefs.
We're going to be five and a half point underdogs.
We better come up with an effort here.
Otherwise, things are going to get really tough for us
in arguably the most
competitive division in the NFL.
Yeah, I mean, this is a big game
for Cincinnati, no doubt. Now,
again, we mentioned Matt Verdam, who we
had on yesterday from Sports Illustrated. He's pointed
out, like, under Joe
Burrow, the Bengals have had slow
starts to seasons before. The 0-2 starts,
the 1-3s. They always find
a way to rally. The 0-2 starts, the 1-3s. They always find a way to rally.
The big difference here is I wonder about Joe Burrow's health to start the season as opposed to previous years
where it's been how does he finish the season
because he doesn't look right.
That offense doesn't look right.
And their schedule is interesting.
The Bengals won't panic if they lose
because their next two games are against the Commanders and the Panthers.
Yeah.
Chalk some wins in there.
After that, they've got a division game against Baltimore.
So they could very easily, even if they lose this weekend, be two and two heading into that big pivotal game against Baltimore.
Kansas City's talking this game up big time as well because these two teams don't like each other.
I don't know if you've seen all the sniping that they've had against one
another.
Like they've been trading barbs through the media back and forth.
Kansas city like wants to make a statement this game.
And I think they want to do it on offense because it felt like they,
they put some pieces together in the opener.
There were,
you know,
a couple of moments where things looked off,
but they're talking this up.
It's like, we've got legit weapons.
Maybe for the first time,
this quality and caliber and depth of weapons
since Tyreek Hill left,
because they're huge on Worthy.
Rasheed Rice had, like, a very good opening game.
Travis Kelsey didn't really do anything in the opener,
and he's obviously a future Hall of Famer.
And I think that they think they can put up big points
against the Bengals on the weekend.
So, I mean, that's my marquee game of the week.
You know what would be my lock of the week,
if we're talking about it?
What?
Texans minus six and a half at home to the Bears on Sunday night.
I still don't think the Bears are very good.
Well, I'm glad you picked that one.
I think Caleb Williams is going to have some rocky times this season.
And frankly, because I don't like USC, he's like the Shane Wright of the NFL for me.
I like it.
I watched him play a few times.
I was kind of like, eh.
Okay.
This should have been right up there with Chiefs-Bengals as potential game of the week.
Both teams won their openers.
It's Sunday night football.
You've got the reigning top quarterback of his class,
even though he's taken second overall in C.J. Stroud,
against this year's top quarterback of his class in Caleb Williams.
It should have been a marquee matchup. But, well, it still is.
The Bears are going to be likely without Roma Dunze, which sucks
because I kind of wanted to see him play on Sunday Night Football.
And they're going to be without Keenan Allen.
Neither guy has practiced this week.
For an offense that put up, like, barely 150, 200 yards of offense
in the opener, and they won, losing.
But they almost deserve to lose but losing two
of your top receivers from an offense that was already sputtering it doesn't bode well like i'm
with you i think this is going to be a blowout on sunday night football um i think that cj stroud
and that texans offense is going to find ways to score and then i think that demico ryan's
defense is going to get let loose on Caleb Williams.
Here's the thing. The one
thing I'll say is that Williams didn't turn
the ball. He won the turnover battle against
Will Levis because Will Levis was like, here, take the football.
Right? Yeah.
I don't know if that happens this week.
I could see Sunday Night Football being a major
blowout for the Texans
and I'm kind of here for it because
I don't love USC either. I'm kind of here for it because I, you know,
I don't love USC either.
I don't really love Caleb Williams.
And I kind of want to see what happens if this thing implodes.
I'm just into chaos theory like that.
It's Ask Us Anything Friday on the Halford & Brough Show.
If you want to text in to the Dunbar Lumber text line at 650-650.
The Bridge Street Dunbar Lumber in Ladner has moved to Progress Way in Tilbury's Industrial Park.
More room, more product, more awesome details at DunbarLumber.com.
If you're new to the show, ask us anything means exactly that.
You can ask us anything.
It could be about sports.
It can be about movies, entertainment, life in general, philosophy.
Most of the time, it's about sports, though.
Steve from Burnaby with an ask us anything.
Oh, and don't forget, if you want to be entered into the contest for a hundred dollar gift
card from AJ's pizza, include the pizza emoji with your ask us anything.
Steve from Burnaby.
How long does it now take you to prepare and stretch for rec league games?
So I guess it can be soccer for you.
It can be hockey for me.
Um, Steve says I've recently turned 30.
Oh, you're so old, Steve.
And anything less than 30 minutes means body aches the next day.
So, Steve, I've reached the point, almost 50,
where I don't stretch because I'm getting those body aches regardless.
I think I had a three-minute stretch in my rec league game the other day.
I go out there and I handled the puck a little bit
stretch a little bit but honestly i'm getting that uh i'm getting that what's it what do they
call it dom doms it's like the delayed onset muscle soreness yeah i'm really dealing with a lot of
doms it's worse than actual dom domsoms and subs. It's more annoying.
Every day I wake up, I got the doms.
So to answer his question, prior to tearing my Achilles,
which probably was a direct result of not stretching enough
and not being limber enough.
You must have a lot of doms now.
I got a lot of doms.
They're everywhere.
I had, you know what I doing uh was going in the steam room
and stretching in the steam room because i was like this is the ultimate way to warm the muscles
is be in the hottest environment imaginable get the blood flowing and circulating and then
stretching um the issue was is that my body got used to it so when i didn't do it i was like a
plank like yeah it was impossible to move so i was like to it so when i didn't do it i was like a plank like
yeah it was impossible to move so i was like how can i because i couldn't make it to the steamer
well it's only a bunch of different things so i'm like how can i try and replicate this so i bought
this stuff it's called cryoderm heat it's a canadian company you're just trying to cheat
aren't you yeah i was trying to take a shortcut. Cheating. I don't know what ingredients they put in to this deep heating rub.
It is the kind of searing, painful burn, the likes of which I've never felt in my life.
Yeah, the nerds used it in Revenge of the Nerds.
Remember, they mixed it up, mixed up the jocks.
You know, okay, so that's funny.
Jock straps.
It was exactly that.
So I had to use it on my hamstrings,
and then I put on my gear and went in the car
and drove to the field because I was running late.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then about halfway on the ride,
and I'll never forget it,
it was on the ride to Ambleside in West Van,
I realized that the heat rub had sort
of like migrated from my hamstrings into the groinal area you know yep it was right no it was
it was searing searing pain i had to shower before the game to try and remove some of the heat rub
oh showering makes it worse but you had i had to I had to try and get it off my skin because it was that hot.
Well, that's been a great story.
This whole thing about you preparing for your.
It was the Ask Us Anything.
For your games and.
So many images.
There's just.
Yeah.
The work journal came up.
Thank you for that.
Someone said, did it work better than Tiger Bomb?
A hundred times stronger.
I never, never put anything on my skin that strong in my life.
It's incredible.
I still use it.
Just sparingly now.
And you steer free of the groin oil.
You steer, yeah.
It was, I had never been in that much pain before.
Never?
In your life?
Even when your Achilles burst?
No.
The Achilles was a walk in the park compared to this.
You couldn't escape the burn.
There was nothing you could do.
And I was sitting in it.
Sitting in it.
Mike Dural is just from Brockville.
Ask us anything.
Which player or prospect were you convinced was going to figure it out
and become an NHL-er but never did?
Mike says, when I was a gullible teen, it was Federer, Federoff.
He made me realize
prospects don't always turn out.
Sometimes they get punched out.
Yep.
I think that was a little bit
about the name, perhaps.
And then basically
every single Canucks prospect
after that
until Brock Besser
confirmed this.
The one guy that I,
and this is fairly recent,
the one guy that I thought was going to be a player was Adam Goddard.
Yeah, me too.
Me too.
It looked like he had an NHL caliber shot,
and maybe we were a little bit swayed because there was that run of hockey
players from the Northeast that won the Hobie Baker.
It just felt like a fit, right?
It just really never materialized.
Cody Hodgson.
Sure.
I was like, oh, he's an NHL player.
But he did turn into a player.
He just had injury issues.
Yeah, but I mean, well, I guess I just assumed he'd be a long-term NHL player.
Yeah.
Putting up points.
Right.
He just didn't.
Yeah.
I mean, obviously, there was some bad luck there, but I don't know.
It just didn't obviously work. Goddard was definitely a guy that should have spent time in the American League. Yeah. He was points. Right. He just didn't. Yeah. I mean, obviously, there was some bad luck there, but I don't know. It just didn't obviously work.
Gaudet was definitely a guy that should have spent time in the American League.
Yeah.
He was rushed.
Right?
Yeah.
He was almost on the McCann, Vertanen, like, erroneous path, I think.
I just watched him play and kind of liked his work rate, and maybe I was just fooled
by that.
He was the difference, though.
I think he was one of those guys that looked like he was working hard.
Not that he wasn't, but there's some guys that...
The George Costanza?
Yeah. Walk around looking flustered all the time? No, no, no, no, no. Not that he wasn't, but there's some guys that... The George Costanza? Walk around looking flustered
all the time?
No, no, no, no, no.
But that's putting it on.
There's some guys that look
like they're working hard
and they are,
but then you realize
that they have to
just to get to that level.
Do you understand
what I'm saying?
Like, wow,
he's really putting in a shift.
It's like, well, yeah,
he has to.
That's how hard
he has to work, right?
But he did look like
he had good energy
and he really liked
to celebrate.
For me, it was a guy
that we had on a week and a half ago, two weeks ago, Justin Pogge. work, right? But he did look like he had good energy, and he really liked to celebrate. For me, it was a guy that we had on
a week and a half ago, two weeks ago,
Justin Pogge. Yeah, right. I thought he was
going to pan. I thought for sure he was going to be a guy,
and then he just never got that second opportunity.
So nothing happens.
Speaking of goalies, Jason the
killer goalie texts in with an
Ask Us Anything. Being that today is Friday
the 13th,
what is the biggest superstitious sport in your opinion
i don't know why baseball came to mind i think there's a lot of guys that have superstitions
at baseball mar garcia para yeah adjusting his loves every every pitch but you know who's really
superstitious sydney crosby very actually met, who mentioned that the other day
when they were talking about him
on whether or not...
Zeisberger.
Oh, Zeisberger, yeah.
It was like,
it's a superstition
to stay in Pittsburgh?
Yeah, that's not really
a superstition,
but I get it.
The eight and seven,
the numerical,
the numerology,
that's a big thing.
Do you remember in the cup finals
he would never go to the podium?
So they would have a podium set up
for the players and it would make it a lot easier
for the media because you would just be in essentially a theater or a room where they
would have chairs set up and the players would be mic'd up and the coaches would go there
and the guys that like Sid or the stars or the players that everyone wanted to talk to would go to the podium.
Sid would not go there.
Sid would say, I do my media at my stall in the dressing room.
So there would be a hundred media, all of them smelling great, obviously, just crowded around Sid at his stall.
And I think he kind of enjoyed it because it was like look at these leeches do you remember the hat he used to wear they would try
and get him like a new not sweat stained Pittsburgh Penguins cap and he would always wear the same
like really old ratty sweat stained Pittsburgh Penguins cap I think the superstition in sports
lends itself more to the ones that are super habitual and repetitive.
Like, I don't know golf, but I'm assuming there's tons of superstitious golfers in the way.
Baseball, because baseball is such a repetitive sport.
Well, a lot of it, they tell you also, like, you need a pre-shot routine.
And then sometimes that turns into a superstition.
And it also turns into six-hour rounds.
Right.
And that's part of baseball as well, right?
I mean, there's all the sort of things that go into doing the same thing
for 162 games during the summer that lends itself to the superstition.
Okay, we're up against it for time.
When we come back, we're going to turn our attention
to the Canadian Football League, specifically the BC Lions.
Bob the Moj Marjanovic is going to join us.
Lions, Argonauts tonight from BC Place.
Lions looking to go for their third straight victory.
We'll talk to the play-by-play voice of those Lions, the Moj.
That's coming up next on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
It's the Moj.
I did not eat four burgers.
Yes, it's the Moj. I don't want to go to Winnipeg. Nobody wants to go to Winnipeg. Yes, it's the Moch.
I don't want to go to Winnipeg.
Nobody wants to go to Winnipeg.
Yes, I love food.
It's the Moch.
I went online and kind of did a little surfing.
It's a millennia.
Yes, it's the Moch.
Halpert's fine, but, you know, Brum, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, moat, Moj, it's the Moj. 7.32 on a Friday. Happy Friday, everybody.

Good morning, Moj. How are you?
Good morning, gentlemen.
How excited are you for
tonight's game to see the BC Lions go for
their third straight victory
against a somewhat reeling
Toronto Argonauts team, losers of two
straight? Yeah, it's going to be interesting.
I mean, you're talking about a team that's won two games
against two of the top teams in the East in convincing fashion.
And, you know, the thing is, they've just got to keep it rolling.
The Western Division is so tight, so they're going to have to go out there,
continue to do what they do, and hopefully walk away with a win at BC Place.
So there's been a lot of talk this week about, over the last few weeks,
how versatile the offenses
look like we know about Stan Beck and he's the CFL's leading rusher which is great we know about
McInnes the CFL's leading receiver which is also great Nathan Rourke is back so that gives him
another dimension at the quarterback position but there's some depth beyond that as well especially
at the receiver position where more guys are stepping up meaning that Rourke and this offense
have a lot of different weapons to go to,
which is a very good thing.
Yeah, I mean, Keon Hatcher obviously is coming back from that injury,
so he's starting to round into form.
You know, Javon Coutoy is really underrated,
and him coming back to the lineup and returning to the lineup has been huge.
And I say that because Javon can go and do so many different things for you at so many
different positions he can be a wide out he can be a tight end he can be an H-back he's a great
blocker and when they lost Javon Katoi they had to basically run different personnel packages
to compensate for that loss so if they were running a personnel package where they needed
you know where Katoi was a blocker, they'd bring in an offensive lineman.
If they ran a personnel package where Katoi was a receiver,
they'd have to bring in an extra receiver.
So basically it kind of was almost telling the defense in terms of what the
tendency was going to be.
But with his return, you've kind of seen the offense take off a little bit.
Aiden Eberhardt I I think, is a great receiver.
He's a great young kid out of Wyoming.
So, yeah, there's a lot of things.
But the other thing, too, that's impressed with the offense lately
is the fact that they've been doing it with a revamped offensive line.
Again, the offensive line will see some changes this week
as Chris Slugger comes in and plays left tackle.
They're going to move Corey Woodruff to make his second start at guard.
So Slugger comes in for Neville.
Neville will back up.
It's been kind of a revolving door with injuries and personnel decisions.
So that's the other thing that's kind of impressed you about this offense
is they've done it with an offensive line that's kind of in makeshift.
What about the opponent tonight?
It's Argo's team that was brilliant during the regular season last year.
It's been a tumultuous season.
There's the Chad Kelly situation,
and he's kind of finding his way back into the lineup.
And then I've noticed defensively they've given up a ton of points
the last two weeks in these two consecutive losses.
Yeah, they're missing some pieces on defense.
Brinkman, the defensive lineman, was apparently going to play.
He's not.
Wynton McManus, they're outstanding linebackers out of the lineup.
So two big pieces.
And offensively, you know, I look at the Argos,
and for me the strength of their teams, their running game,
and Kadeem Carey, and also they have McMahon out of a boy behind him.
But, you know, Chad Kelly, the big thing with him,
he's got to reduce his turnovers.
A couple of pick sixes last week against Ottawa.
You're never going to win a football game when you have two pick sixes.
So that's going to be a big key for Toronto's ball security.
And then I think the strength of their team is just running the football
and kind of setting everything up off of that.
So it'll be interesting to see tonight how the Lions' defense fares.
So let's talk a little Canucks.
I know you wrote about the Canucks.
You had your top 10 questions for the season.
And let's pick one of them.
And it is a wide-ranging one are the Canucks better
than last season yeah well I think when you look at the additions of the subtractions um
the thing is I don't think they replaced a player of the Doroff and Lindholm's capabilities
their ceiling but I think what they did is they kind of really upgraded the floor, right,
by bringing in some of the players that they have in the sense that, you know,
you bring in a Heine and you bring in a Sherwood,
and they're banking on those players being better than, say,
the Lafferty's and McKay of those players.
So I think that's what they're looking at.
They didn't go out there and replace the high-end talent,
but I think they increased the level of their floor.
How concerned are you with the goaltending situation
heading into the season or just throughout the season
when it comes to Demko's injury,
which we're still not 100% sure from the outside looking in
what's going on there?
Well, believe it or not, I get a phone call this morning
from Dollywall at like 7.10.
He's got a big scoop coming up at 8 o'clock, and he also told me for you guys not to rip him. there well believe it or not i get a phone call this morning from dolly wall at like 7 10 he's
got a big scoop coming up at eight o'clock he also told me for you guys not to rip them um
but there's going to be i do not agree to that he'll give you guys a little bit of an update
but it is a concern especially when you hear the word chronic right and that is the thing that
concerns me if it's if it's a chronic knee injury, how does this impact Thatcher Demko's performance?
How does it impact his workload, right?
And then you have the situation with Sheloff's and this, quote,
knee inflammation with Sheloff's.
So that's another concern.
So, you know, it's not a good situation when you're heading into your season
with questions surrounding your goaltending
and mainly the health of your goaltending.
So to me, that's a big, big factor with the Canucks this year
is how Demko plays and how he handles this injury.
I'm going to do an Ask Us Anything for you.
It's from Scott from The Ridge,
and I feel like it's kind of up your alley.
Ask Us Anything.
Do the Canucks have any substantial grit in the system
that might be able to take on Rempe or other scrappers in the NHL?
We lost Big Z, so a bit concerned we need to replace what he brought to the team.
So for me, it's a two-part question.
Number one is, do they have any guys? But my second part would be, do they need a guy to some people around the league after they made their moves at free agency,
they like Deharnais, but they don't believe he has the main streak
that is the Doroff has, right?
So that's a very good question.
And I don't know in this day and age if it's as important as it was
maybe 10 or 20 years ago, but at the same time,
you have to have some sort of deterrent.
You don't need somebody who's going to go out there
and, you know, fight 15 times a year.
But you need somebody who is, like I said, going to answer the bell and be a bit of a deterrent.
I don't know if the Canucks have that right now.
I mean, you look at that lineup.
You tell me who's that guy, right?
So maybe Dakota Joshua.
Maybe.
And the texter texted in and said, you know, with all due respect to Dakota Joshua, I don't think he's a deterrent in that way.
No, he's not. So it'll be interesting to see if the Canucks address it.
If it becomes an issue, I'm sure at some point they'll address it.
And those players are tough to find because, you know, you need a guy that can also play hockey, right?
So and contribute because you don't want to have a Reeves on your roster
just taking up a spot doing nothing.
It's funny enough,
DeJarne and Joshua actually fought each other
early last season.
Did they really?
Yeah.
DeJarne, I looked at his fight card.
He's taken on some pretty tough customers
throughout his NHL and AHL career,
and he's got the size to do it.
But I think Moji hit on something there.
You need to have a mean streak to do it with consistency.
And the other thing is, like, there's just not that many guys
that are adept fighters.
Like, there's a reason that Rempe jumps to mind.
It's because he's almost an anomaly at this point.
I just always come back to the pack mentality,
and you just need to do it as a group.
And, you know, if it's a guy like Rempe
who does something egregious, use your shtick.
Honestly, like I'm not – honestly, I'm not joking.
I'm not joking, right?
Like just – that's the way it's got to be.
I don't think – I mean, the toughest thing to find
is a guy like Rempe who can play.
You know what I mean?
Like the Leafs have a problem because Ryan Reeves,
they signed him to do this stuff and he can't play.
And when he gets into the lineup, he's a liability out there.
So, I don't know.
And you do it in numbers too, right?
Like three guys coming at a guy.
Just do that.
And that's a great point.
To me, like even if
you have that deterrent i still think you have to have that pack mentality right like you you have a
situation where something happens the next thing you know there's three or four guys on your team
that are right there so i totally agree in the pack mentality thing um and you know it's like i
said it's going to be interesting to see how if this this becomes an issue for the Canucks during the season,
but I think you make a great point,
and I think that's how Rick Tockett and the organization
will probably address it as well,
is the fact that you have to have that pack mentality.
Someone, and I don't have the ask us anything in front of me,
but I remembered it,
they were marveling at your food tour of Montreal,
especially the late-night version of it,
and they wanted to know if you had anything similar in Vancouver
to recommend listeners. A anything similar in Vancouver to
recommend listeners,
a late night Vancouver stop.
Wow.
I mean,
it's a little past the day that I'm like,
you know,
cruising around at three o'clock in the morning,
but,
but back in the day,
like some of the,
the older listeners might remember this back in the day,
new West had like mugs and jugs and Chicago tonight and all that.
And there was a place called Venus pizza on six street. And that was open till like three, four o'clock in the day New West had like Mugs and Jugs and Chicago Tonight and all that. And there was a place called Venus Pizza on 6th Street.
And that was open until like 3, 4 o'clock in the morning.
And I mean, that was always a gong show.
Vancouver, the old spot that we used to go to after clubbing was a place called Martini's on Broadway.
Yes!
We always went there.
That was a show sponsor of the Curtain Blog in its original days.
Very good choice.
It's no longer there, though.
Jimmy Jurgis was running that place.
That was open until like 3 or 4 in the morning as well.
So he'd pop in a martini, have a pizza, some ribs, whatever the case may be.
So I don't know.
Like I said, it's not exactly like I'm going clubbing anymore,
so I don't know what the hot spots are afterward.
But back in the day, those were the ones that we'd go to.
Well, when the Grey Cup is in town,
are you going to be showing out-of-towners the city?
Isn't that your job?
If I would come to Vancouver and I was involved in the CFL
and I wanted to have a good time at the Grey Cup,
I'd be like, yeah, well, I've got to get in touch with Moj
and see what he's doing.
Well, we'll do a couple of things here and there,
but obviously you're going to have all the Grey Cup festivities
and all the different parties.
So, yeah, I mean, it's not a go.
The funny thing is I don't really hang out with that many people from,
you know, the CFL circles.
There might be a few, but it's not like it's, you know,
15 or 20 people are going to be phoning me during Grey Cup week.
So it is what it is. But the Grey Cup's a party in itself.
You don't need me to show you around.
What's the best, what's the best, is the spirit of Edmonton still the thing?
When was the last Grey Cup you went to?
Last year.
You were at that?
The last three or four, yeah.
So what is the big party?
I always remember the spirit of Edmonton.
Yeah, the spirit of Edmonton's always big.
Ryderville.
The thing that cracks me up is, like, the Atlantic schooners have a room right they don't even have
a team in the league and they have a room right so and they sell lobster rolls at 20 bucks a pop
which is kind of crazy but still it's lobster and it was awesome um that's when the crack
would be at edmonton's probably the biggest one i always like when the people from baltimore still
show up i haven't seen flag guy for
a while. There used to be a guy, we called him
flag guy, that would show up and he'd have
this flag on a pool
probably 10 feet high.
And whatever party he's at, you'd see this
stallion flag, right? But I haven't
seen him for a while, though.
Moj, you're the best. Thanks for doing this.
No food questions. Any food
questions? We asked you one.
We asked you places to go.
Hey, by the way, be nice to Dolly
Walk. He phoned me like
7-0-7. He yells. He screams.
He shouts at me.
Waking me up and saying that he
read Twitter that I was on at 7-30 and he
told me to tell you guys to be
nice to him. And he's got a goaltending scoop.
Okay, that's good. And I'll tell you what. be nice to him. And he's got a goaltending scoop. I'll tell you. Okay, that's good.
And I'll tell you what.
If you need a late night food place when the Grey Cup is on,
you want to take some buddies out.
Duffin's Donuts, 41st and Knight.
Oh, yeah.
The most diverse menu in the city.
You can get anything.
It's terrific.
It is the best.
Like their sandwiches are outstanding.
And they, like you said, diverse. You can have, like, Vietnamese sandwiches there.
They've got all different types of sandwiches.
You've got tortas.
I'll have the fried chicken and the bubble tea.
Thank you.
That's the best.
Yeah.
Yeah, Duffin's on, yeah, you're right on that.
41st and 9th.
41st.
Yeah.
41st and 9th.
So good.
Been there many times.
Yeah, buddy.
Okay.
Enjoy the game tonight.
All right.
Later.
Thanks.
Bob, the Moj Marjanovic.
Man, what a powerhouse hit.
Breaking down the Lions game, talking Canucks,
teasing the Rick Dollywall hit,
and a scoop that Dolly has for our show.
By the way, Dollywall is going to be on in 15 minutes,
so you're going to want to hear that.
It's like, ooh, Dollywall's got a scoop.
Ooh, that's good.
It's about goaltending.
Ooh, that's bad.
And then we finish it off with some Duffin's Donuts.
A lot of people texting in about the vineyard in Kitts on 4th.
So I used to live a couple blocks away from the vineyard.
That place was great.
And I would go there on Saturday morning or Sunday morning unwell.
And it's the only place in the world that I've ever been able to go into.
And the server would go, the usual?
Yep.
And I'd be, yep.
You need more places like that.
What was your usual? Garlic bread? Just'd be, yep. You need more places. What was your usual?
Garlic bread?
Just like the classic breakfast.
The classic breakfast.
Like the Denny's Grand Slam?
And a coffee and don't talk to me.
Because I hurt.
And you would read the newspaper.
And I would read the newspaper.
They would have the province there or whatever.
And I'd read the newspaper.
It's sad that more places like that don't exist.
Because didn't it get taken over by like a Browns or a Joey's?
Now it's closed.
Now it's vacant.
Yeah.
I don't know what's going on.
Maybe they're redeveloping it or something.
It's an amazing spot.
I got a great job idea for like a side hustle for the Moj.
He should do a food bus tour
and like take tourists around Vancouver
to all the food hotspots.
Like he drives a big bus and it's like Moj's bus.
I'm going to need a big bus for the people that sign up for that.
Moj's bus food tour.
And it's just like, yeah.
And he just goes to all the food hotspots and he has like set menus for everyone.
That's a really good idea.
It is a really good idea.
Joe Leary for a while had a bus brewery tour.
We went on it one time with a bunch of contest winners.
Yeah.
From 10-4. Those are great. but that one I remember it started early,
and by about 3 o'clock in the afternoon,
like you are feeling it.
You're feeling it.
You're feeling it, yeah.
There are so many breweries in Vancouver now,
like the greater Vancouver area.
To do a bus brewery tour now would be insane
because it would like take three days
to actually hit all of them. Okay
quick reset here. Let's
make sure we get some Ask Us Anythings on the
docket. We'll do one or two before we go to break here
because we have a few minutes but a
reminder the best Ask Us Anything
which we have not chosen yet and the contest
is still very much open
gets a $100 gift card to AJ's
Pizza on East Broadway. Speaking of
must eats in the city AJ's is the best pizza in Vancouver. If you win a $100 gift card to AJ's Pizza on East Broadway. Speaking of must-eats in the city, AJ's is the best pizza in Vancouver.
If you win a $100 gift card, you will be a happy person when you cash in.
Okay, I got to ask us anything.
Ask us anything.
Have you ever been fed up with a season the way the Minnesota Twins prospect
who was released for tipping pitches to the other team was?
Laddie knows this story story that was my what we
learned thanks uh well you can explain the story now do it now well he was caught tipping pitches
i don't know what else he could say he's a minor league player he was he was caught telling the
opposition which type of pitch was going to come and. These weren't nothing games. These were games with playoff implications.
So the twins did a bit of an investigation into it.
And according to ESPN's report, Bender told teammates
he just wanted the season to end.
This is one of the greatest quotes from an article
that I think I've ever seen.
I just want to stop.
He will collect all $300,000 of his signing bonus,
and then they're going to say sayonara.
Derek Bender.
Now, this was a fairly highly touted draft pick too, right?
You were saying?
Yeah, sixth round pick.
So not like up there, but he was, you know,
there's like 40 rounds in the MLB draft.
So he's not a nobody.
Playing single A as a catcher.
In his first season of professional ball,
he's straight out of college, came out of there this year,
and he's already on his way. Sounds like he's not much of a team guy.
Yeah.
And for a catcher,
I don't know if that's a good thing because he's calling the game for your
team.
Can you imagine fastball?
Yeah.
Curveball.
What was the umpire thinking during this whole thing?
Like,
so he played for the Fort Myers mighty muscles.
That's a single a affiliate affiliate of the Minnesota Twins,
which is a great single-A affiliate name.
And he will never play baseball again.
That's pretty much it for him.
And it's not really like a gambling thing.
People might think it's a gambling thing,
but no one's betting on single-A baseball.
I'm sorry.
If they are, then it's getting flagged.
And the answer to that is no, have never been although there were a couple
canucks seasons recently where if i could end it prematurely i would have said all right yeah
seasons over seasons ago nine games in well that was a fun season you know who i feel bad for is
the guys who have to come on and talk about the jays every day. Yeah, still. In detail because there's twice as many baseball games
as there are hockey games.
Now, at least recently,
they've had kind of an interesting story
in about in France is nearly getting no hitters.
Best hitting team in baseball in the last couple months.
So is the MLB.
Yeah, but that would be even more frustrating
because you'd be like, where the hell was this before?
Well, it was in Buffalo.
That's where it was.
Right.
So I know where you can point that finger.
Is the MLB death march the worst of all the major sports death marches
because of the amount of games?
Oh, yeah.
What the White Sox have been going through might be the worst punishment.
Their death march started in March.
That's a long death march.
That's a lot of games.
Okay.
I got one here from sneaky Pete,
the mind grape smuggler.
Good luck trying to figure out what that very specific.
Ask us anything.
What do you think is more likely?
Rick talk at repeating is the coach of the year.
Quinn Hughes repeating as the Norris winner.
Trivia question.
There's been one coach,
one coach in NHL history.
That's one consecutive Jack Adams awards.
Scotty Bowman.
Nope.
Do you know who it is?
John Tortorella.
I will tell you,
he coached the Detroit Red Wings.
Oh, Babcock?
Nope.
Jacques Demers did it in 87 and 88,
the first and only coach to win back-to-back Jack Adams
because the Jack Adams now,
it's almost impossible to win it back-to-back
because it always goes to the team that was the worst
that had the biggest points increase.
You can't do that two years in a row.
I think Quinn Hughes is more likely than Rick Dockett to do it.
And there's a follow-up question from Sneaky Pete,
the mind grape smuggler.
Or will another Canuck take home a major award this year?
I don't see that right now.
It's hard to see anyone, you know.
Not loving Demko's Vesna likelihood right now.
Right.
You know?
There's no one, despite Andy's unbridled optimism, there's no one really for the Calder.
I don't see that happening.
Sulky trophy, probably not.
No one's in the mix for that, right?
Not heavily into the mix.
No, not to the point where you'd consider them a favorite.
Hughes Norris would be it,
because there have been guys that have gone on runs
winning the Norris trophy.
You know what Hughes needs to do to win the Norris?
Be really good on defense?
Yeah.
Pummel Kale McCarr?
Score 100 points.
Oh.
That would, yeah.
I like my idea better.
Maybe Petey regains his form when he gets a Selkie candidacy.
It's possible.
I don't see that.
He's not even going to be getting matchups to start.
Yeah.
But maybe.
JT Miller is way more likely right now to win the Selkie than Petey. Yeah. But maybe. JT Miller is way more likely right now to win the Selkie than Petey.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The Petey-Selkie dream for me is over for now.
Yeah.
I might revisit it in a little bit.
I just want to have a glimmer of hope that he'll find it.
Yeah.
Well, maybe Lecker or Mackey will give him that charge on his line.
Now I'm trying to –
Petey's more likely to win Yart Ross
sure
if McDavid gets hurt
or something like that
so Hughes finished
with what 92
but even that is
very very very unlikely
Hughes finished with
92 points last year right
yeah
yeah 92 and 82
100 points
if you get 100 points
then you gotta
yeah that is a good
benchmark for
by the way
you know he's talked
about upping his
goal total again
eh
yeah
he's talked about
all the
like here's the one
I want he scored 17 last year like I talked about upping his goal total again hey yeah he's talked about all the like here's the one i
want he scored 17 last year like i i think 30 is a bridge too far that's a huge total for a defenseman
but if he could get a 25 goal 100 point season which i think is very attainable um you're talking
about a guy that's going to be very attainable. Well, you need to get.
I mean, it's attainable.
I don't know if it's very attainable.
You got to stay healthy.
The power play would have to be really good all season long.
I guess what I'm saying is he'd only need to bump his totals by like eight.
Like if he scored eight.
But his totals last season were incredible.
Sure.
But not out of line with what a lot of elite defensemen are putting up in the NHL.
Like it should be set.
That's true.
Scoring is going up.
Maybe it keeps going up.
Like, Yossi and Makar and the elite of the elite are scoring at that clip.
Like, it's not like Hughes is 30 points clearer of the next defenseman, right?
Don't get me wrong.
Putting up 25 and 100 in an NHL campaign for defense was a huge accomplishment.
Only a handful of guys have done it.
He's that special a player player though, I would say.
Okay.
Keep getting your what we learned, Zinn.
Hey, here's trivia for you.
Yeah.
Who has the record for most goals in a season by a defenseman?
It's not Mike Green, is it?
Paul Coffey?
It's Paul Coffey?
Not at ADOC.
Yeah.
48 goals in 85-86.
He had 138 points as a defenseman.
That's ridiculous.
And that was the year that Steve Smith also scored a big goal.
Right.
Unfortunately, it went in his own net.
Now I got to look up Mike Green.
Mike Green had 35 one year.
So at least I wasn't that far off, but I should have said Coffey.
So if you look at this list,
it's Paul Coffey and Bobby Orr
with a little bit of Doug Wilson in there.
He had 39 goals for Chicago in 81, 82,
but didn't help in the playoffs.
No.
When the Canucks beat the Blackhawks.
That's right.
You are listening to the Halford & Brough Show
on Sportsnet 650.
Dollywall is coming up next.
And apparently we got to be nice to him
because he's got a scoop.
So if you want to listen to that.
