so when that play happened yeah Do you think the Jets
Like do they even care anymore
Maybe
If they did
They'd be upset
Because
The Jets were leading the Seahawks
Who were a special teams nightmare
In the first half
21-7 at that point
Yep
And
Aaron Rodgers
Had the Jets
At the Seattle 9 yard line
Yep So essentially it could have been 28-7 Aaron Rodgers had the Jets at the Seattle nine-yard line. Yep.
So essentially it could have been 28-7.
Instead, he throws the pick six to Leonard Williams.
I don't see a lot of defensive linemen return a ball,
whatever, 95 yards for a touchdown.
And then that cued Seattle's comeback.
And the Seahawks found a way.
Actually, the Jets would never score another point in that game.
That was it?
That was it.
They got 21 points,
and the Seahawks still made a bunch of mistakes,
but the Jets made bigger ones.
Leonard Williams on that play,
and this is per NFL Next Gen stats,
Leonard Williams on that play hit a top speed of 17.8 miles an hour,
which is bloody fast for a guy that big.
That's crazy, man.
He also covered 109.5 yards on the play.
He was very tired afterwards.
He's been incredible.
Yeah, he's been great.
Let's go.
Oh, you know what?

Mike Tanier joins us now
on the Halford & Brough Show
on Sportsnet 650.
Good morning, Michael.
How are you?
I'm doing well.
I think Leonard Williams
hit that 17 miles an hour
pretty early in the run.
I don't think he was still
going 17 miles an hour
late in that run.
Morgan Moses was chasing him
and he also was not going
anywhere near 17 miles an hour
by the end.
He was very tired
at the end of that. I think he went straight for the oxygen on the sidelines but
good on leonard williams because he has been a beast the last two weeks and look it has not been
an oil painting for the seahawks these last two weeks but they've managed to get the job done
they've played good defense at times and they've overcome their own mistakes especially yesterday
so i know you wrote a lot about the jet side side of things in Aaron Rodgers, but let's start
with what the Seahawks did right yesterday in that win in New York over the Jets.
Leonard Williams played phenomenally.
They spread the ball around pretty well.
And I think I'm spending a lot really great about the Seahawks game because, you know,
their touchdown drive was Jets penalties.
I mean, it honestly was, you know, a fourth and six penalty,
a fourth and one penalty.
I think there was another fourth and one penalty by the Jets.
You know, and eventually Charbonnet gets that touchdown.
But early in the game, it was so many special teams blunders.
Really, if you don't get that pick six from Leonard Williams,
and then you don't have this Jets team that increasingly,
if the game goes on, starts looking for reasons to collapse,
reasons to quit on themselves.
If you don't get that, you don't get that Seahawks victory.
What kind of money line, what number did you get
when you bet on the Seahawks when they were trailing 21-13?
That was it.
I actually bet on them entering the game,
but then when it was plus 200,
right after Aaron Rodgers overthrew a pass on fourth and two.
So it was after the pick six by Witt Williams,
and then the next possession was plus 200.
If I got in a little faster, I might have gotten plus 250,
but money in the bank, money in the bank.
Was that the last game Aaron Rodgers will play for the Jets?
There's a lot of talk about that.
I mean, I am looking around.
I'm having a hard time figuring out where that scuttlebutt really comes
from,
whether it just sort of grew out of the ether of the New York media or
not.
Cause I don't know who talks to Woody Johnson.
There's no,
there's nobody to talk to the jets anymore.
It's not like you can have the coaches here.
He's gone.
The general manager's here.
He's gone.
There's no,
there's no insider that you could talk to except the owner himself.
But I mean,
I wouldn't be surprised at this point because they're out of excuses.
And at some point, Woody Johnson's pride, the owner's pride,
has to kick in and say, I've been made a fool of.
I've been made a fool of by this quarterback who I bent over backwards
to cater to, and this is the response I've been getting from the team from him.
So I would not be stunned if at some point he said,
back this season, I'm going to figure this out on the other end,
but I'm not going to let Aaron Rodgers go out there
and make a fool out of me anymore.
Jets, obviously one of the most disappointing teams in the AFC this year.
There's some contenders in the NFC,
but one of them played out last night on Sunday Night Football
in the snow in Buffalo.
The San Francisco 49ers, who if those listening haven't heard it yet,
Christian McCaffrey likely done for the year with another injury,
this time suspected to his PCL
in his knee. It just
adds on to what's been a disaster of a season
for the San Francisco 49ers.
Are there going to be sweeping
changes in San Francisco after
this or are they going to chalk this up to being one of those
years that was an aberration, it was injury filled
and they've still got the pieces to be competitive?
I don't
think they can make sweeping changes because they structured
everybody's contract to get everybody affordable.
They had to pay them, you know, through next year.
So, you know, McCaffrey is under contract for a while.
Ioke is under contract for a while.
Debo, Kittle, a lot of the guys who've been in and out with injuries,
a lot of the guys like Debo who haven't looked particularly dialed in,
they're under contract for another year.
The other guy who isn't is Purdy,
but I can't imagine them turning around and trying to do something clever,
you know,
just because Purdy has fallen off a little bit with everything else going on.
I'm not impressed by Kyle Shanahan, but I mean,
the guy's taken the team to the Superbowl twice.
I think you have to keep him as well.
So I think they're going to have to try to run this back next year.
And that's a problem because when you start looking at everybody's age,
you start looking at everybody's injury history,
and you start saying, is this a bunch of guys who are on the decline?
The answer is going to be yes.
And I think that they have to kind of just let that roll for a year
before they try to do anything else.
Have you repower-ranked the NFC yet?
And if so, where do the Eagles fall in those rankings?
You can't put them ahead of the Lions.
Lions still remain best team top of the bottom,
had a scare on Thanksgiving, still strong overall.
Lions number one, Eagles number two.
I'm guessing the Vikings are number three now,
and then you've got to get the Packers and the Commanders in there,
and the entire South, the entire West, Seahawks included,
and it's great that they're putting these wins together.
They're just in a different category from those teams.
Has Russell Wilson earned himself another monster contract
when he has to sign this offseason?
It's crazy.
I can't believe this is happening.
What was it, three touchdowns, 414 yards,
shook off an early pick six against the Bengals
and generates 40-plus points of offense for the Steelers,
who look very good right now.ers who look very good right now.
Steelers look very good right now.
Keep an eye in every Bengals game.
Bengals games have gone over, I think, six straight weeks,
and they go over like at halftime.
The Bengals can't stop anybody.
But Wilson looked a lot like peak Russell Wilson.
You saw the touch.
You saw Mabel reset and throw fine guys down the field.
That's an interesting question, how he's going to get paid,
because I would not put tons and tons of money in front of an older quarterback
who's very recently removed from two seasons that were kind of like lost years.
But I don't know how that looks.
Maybe some team looks at him and says, you know, two years,
but like $95 million or something like that.
And the Steelers might want to be that team
based on how they have responded to him over the last few weeks.
The interesting one that I heard was that he might get paid.
It might be even like the Baker Mayfield three-year $100 million deal,
but it won't be from Pittsburgh because moving forward,
the better option might be Fields.
That would be an interesting dynamic.
That would be interesting, but I have a hard
time selling that in the
headquarters.
What we replaced? Fields with Wilson.
Wilson was
clearly better, but we're going to go back to Fields to save
a little bit of money. I have a hard time
being able to justify that one in the locker room.
When it comes to the Buffalo Bills,
what is a bigger strength for them? Josh Allen
being on the team or their defense it's a good question i i would say josh allen because you know that
without josh allen that defense okay maybe maybe they're the broncos or maybe they're chargers or
maybe some other team they're a super bowl contender because of allen but one thing we've
said about the bills for two or three years, it's the balance.
Josh Allen makes some contenders, but balance, defense, defensive front,
secondary, all playing well, offensive line.
They don't have a lot of marquee playmakers,
but you have James Cook running well last night.
You have the rookie running back running well.
You have them spreading the ball.
All these things work in harmony.
It's such good complementary football that they're always in position
to win games like that.
Yesterday, Allen just looked absolutely special.
He didn't throw that many passes because you're not
going to throw that many passes in
a snowstorm, but he looked like
the snow was not impacting him at all.
He looked like a 4x4 truck.
Somebody at another show said he looked like
a white walker out there
floating above the snow.
And that's a difference maker when you start talking about games in December,
games in January, teams like the Dolphins falling off the pace
because they can't handle that kind of weather.
The 49ers clearly rattled by that kind of weather.
And you have the Bills out there looking forward to it
because it's going to give them an advantage in the playoffs.
It feels like it's going to be a big story who gets the number one seed in the AFC
because that could, I suppose, determine the favorite.
If I were to give you Kansas City and Buffalo in Kansas City,
would you be quicker to pick versus,
I know this is obvious,
obviously the home team is going to have an advantage,
but the Bills are 10-2, the Chiefs are 11-1.
There might be some people, I suppose, that would pick Buffalo in Kansas,
even if the game was in Kansas City,
just because of the way the Bills have played this year
and the fact that the Chiefs, although they are 11-1,
they haven't exactly been blowing out the competition.
Yeah, I think I would put it at, in Buffalo,
I would pick the Bills over the Chiefs with confidence.
In Arrowhead, I would pick the Bills over the Chiefs,
but I'd be very shaky about it.
I probably wouldn't put any real money on it
because we've seen the Arrowhead home field advantage
that is both weather and noise.
In Buffalo, it's that extreme weather and noise.
You know, I looked at the conditions last night.
The Chiefs would never win a game in those conditions.
The Chiefs don't like running the ball.
The Chiefs try to do everything with a lot of finesse and filigree.
And if you're trying to send guys in motion and run, like,
intricate screen passes in that weather, you're going to get destroyed.
So, in fact, if we're playing home field as Buffalo,
we're going through Buffalo,
then it's going to be a problem for everybody, including the Chiefs.
So, looking at the Bill's schedule coming up, they've got the Lions in two weeks,
but they end the season with Patriots, Jets, Patriots.
There are not a lot of losses on that schedule,
though they need Kansas City to come up and lay another egg or two.
But Kansas City looks like they can lay another egg or two.
They've got a fire under them to not fall off anymore in Kansas City
because they don't want to lose that home field advantage.

brought to you by the Clayton Public House.

A month ago, the Atlanta Falcons were 6-3.
Looked like they were going to hold on to, or take command at least,
of the NFC South. Since then, they've lost three in a row. They're 6-3. Looked like they were going to hold on to or take command, at least, of the NFC South.
Since then, they've lost three in a row.
They're 6-6 now.
It was ugly on the weekend for Kirk Cousins.
Is it time?
Should they consider bending Cousins and giving Michael Penix Jr. a start there?
You know what?
Go for it.
I mean, they can't because of the money they invested in Cousins
and the whole logic of getting Cousins,
which is to say, well, this is going to give us an easy cruise to the playoffs.
That was the logic.
And it looked like it was the case.
When they were 6-3, hey, this is an easy cruise to the playoffs,
and then you take your chances when you get there. So four interceptions yesterday,
a really bad game against the Broncos before that.
It's hard to justify Cousins, but if you put Pettis in right now,
Arthur Black would have to look at the
entire organization. So what did we just do?
What did we just do with the saucers?
Why did we go out and
trade for Matthew Judon? Why did we bring in
Justin Simmons? Why did we bring in
Darryl Mooney? Why did we do
all of these things when we're going to change
quarterbacks, put the rookie in, and then be
lucky to go 9-8 and squeak away and then get destroyed in the first round of the playoffs
by some wildcard team.
What did we just do?
I think that's what the Chicago Bears were asking after Thanksgiving.
And then they answered it by firing Matt Eberflus.
It was funny because we were talking about it on Friday when we had the show, and it
was prior to Eberflus being removed as the team's head coach, and we said,
there's a handful of in-game decisions that you make,
or I guess in this case don't make, that require an immediate dismissal.
We were trying to think, like, I wonder what they are.
And then we learned that was one of them,
because I know that there was a lot leading up.
Getting embarrassed on national TV.
And he'd been there a while, too, and it clearly wasn't working.
Yeah, so where do the Bears go from here?
How profoundly screwed up are they right now?
What are they going to need to salvage this?
Because they've got a pretty important piece of quarterback right now
in a rookie formative year.
By the way, it's funny because I was trying to justify it,
that decision at the end.
You know, 10-year-olds playing Madden pushed the timeout.
In that
situation, Caleb Williams probably should have
called it. Caleb Williams had just got smoked
on the previous play. He was getting pulled up and probably
thought in the first few seconds, as coach, he called
the timeout. So one of the problems
right now is you had Thomas Brown, who was
the passing game coordinator. So
he was one of the guys who was kind of like
focused on Caleb Williams' development. That was his number one job. So he was one of the guys who was kind of, like, focused on Caleb Williams' development.
That was his number one job.
Then he got promoted to offensive coordinator, so he's, like, moving up,
and so he's not in that role.
He's got to supervise the running game a little bit and some other stuff.
Now he's the head coach.
Now you don't have a, like, personal assistant coach working exclusively
on Caleb Williams, and that's just a bad situation
because the one thing you can do over the next five weeks is keep working on Caleb Williams. And that's just a bad situation because the one thing you can do over the next
five weeks is keep working on his development.
Now one of the guys who would do that has 500 other hats to wear,
and he can't really do it.
So, you know, Ibraflus did not run a tight ship at any point.
His coaching staff was always having problems.
There were all kinds of intrigues going on behind the scenes.
And now you've got this situation.
And it's just a bad way to develop the quarterback
because again he's not going to get
the coaching he needs and it's really
inexcusable to turn out this way
Mike you're the best buddy thanks for doing this
today we really appreciate you taking the time
enjoy Monday Night Football as much as one can
enjoy Browns and Broncos on Monday Night Football
we will do this again next Monday
absolutely take care enjoy your week
you too thanks that's Mike Tanier our NFL insider from the 2 Deep Zone here on We will do this again next Monday. Absolutely. Take care. Enjoy your week. You too. Thanks.
That's Mike Tan here, our NFL insider from the Too Deep Zone here on the
Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Did you see the hit, the disease Al Shearer delivered on Trevor Lawrence
yesterday?
That was garbage.
That was terrible.
Absolutely garbage.
You don't see those very often anymore.
I saw people defending it, too.
They were like, it's a bang-bang play.
It wasn't a bang-bang play.
It was clearly sliding.
Yep.
And he still—
He led with his forearms.
He was clearly trying to make contact with his—
You just don't see that very often.
Really, really dumb.
Really, really dangerous.
Yep.
And I hope Trevor Lawrence is okay.
Here's a question for you.
Yes.
Sunday morning, the Canucks are playing Detroit.
Yes.
And the Seahawks are playing the Jets.
Which game for you had your attention?
City-Liverpool.
It was over by then.
I know.
It was over by then because that game started at 8 o'clock our time.
I'm not going to lie.
I watched, I'd say 60-40 percentages of my attention was to the football yeah i can't i
can't help it i'm sorry sunday mornings are for footballs thank you and i think i can't help it
i'm sorry i don't want to pull a drance here but i i hated that start time for the canucks i'm glad
they won and we got into my second branch i had uh i had the canucks game on the big TV and the Seahawks game on the phone, so I guess the Canucks game had my attention.
But for me, I know it's hard to make a schedule.
I know it's difficult.
You've got to get 82 games in.
There's all sorts of arena availabilities.
You've got to plan road trips.
It's really very difficult.
So I understand it, but I think they should avoid
at all costs trying to be up against the NFL.
You know?
You know, the NFL, like I'm a big Seahawks fan.
There's only 17 games.
So each of the regular season games is so much
more important than an NHL regular season game.
If the Seahawks had lost that game to the Jets,
you're thinking like, oh my God,
they might have just blown their chance
of making the playoffs.
If the Canucks had lost to the Red Wings,
it would have been like, well, we're on to Minnesota.
You know what I mean?
Sunday mornings, especially out here,
because I think we are uniquely blessed
on the West Coast with our football times,
despite whatever weird
thing drance wants to say i love 10 a.m starts for football you wake up you can even sleep in a
little bit you get breakfast have coffee and start watching football all my friends from back east
are jealous of our football setup imagine having to wait until after lunch for football to start
that would stink you'd be like praying for a game in London or Germany.
The Sunday night game.
It's too late.
520 is perfect start time.
Yeah, that is true, actually.
Yeah, how many times would the Sunday night game
be until midnight?
It's too late.
Gotta go to bed.
Gotta do the Halford and Brough show in the morning.
It's the perfect way to watch football.
And I do feel guilty because I know that, like,
our bread and butter home of the Canucks, Sportsnet 650,
is the Vancouver Canucks.
But I'm not going to lie.
Like, yesterday there were some decisions to be made.
Because I was keeping an eye on a lot of –
I had a lot of different action yesterday.
A lot of different action going around in those morning games
in the National Football League.
And there were some very intriguing ones.
And that particular Seahawks game, because they were playing the Jets and Aaron Rodgers and everything that goes along with that, I was paying close attention.
I was also, in the back of my mind, I was like, there's absolutely no way that the Seattle Seahawks can go to the playoffs in the same year where they lose to the Jets and the Giants.
That's true.
Can you believe?
I was mind blown by it because on the text thread with a bunch of my buddies.
You shouldn't be allowed to go to the playoffs.
You should be banned.
They should not let you into the stadium because that game,
when we look back on the Seahawks season and we look back on that Giants loss
in Seattle, we're going to say, what the hell happened there?
Hey, you know what?
The Seahawks have a big game on Sunday against the Cardinals.
Huge.
Guess who plays Sunday at 1 o'clock?
I believe it is your Vancouver Canucks.
And the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Yeah, right.
It's Sunday, 1 p.m. at Rogers Arena.
That's a Taylor Swift night, too.
Maybe that's why they're doing it.
Yeah, I think so.
Yeah, dang.
That's a big day. But that's super
annoying because that,
if you're a Seahawks fan, is a
massive game. If they go
down and beat Arizona,
you're kind of like, man, they would have to really
collapse in order to miss the playoffs.
And as much
as you want to watch them play one of the
more entertaining teams in the NHL, you're kind of
like, ah, this is a tough decision.
What was your favorite result of the weekend?
So you had two Canucks wins, two overtimes,
and then the Seahawks win over the Jets.
I'm not counting the Seahawks win over the Jets
because I don't even think they played all that well.
They made some big plays.
Yeah, they didn't play great.
The Jets were dreadful.
They were just, I mean, you can see why that team was.
For me, I think it might have been the Buffalo win.
Interesting.
Because the Connor Garland goal was so awesome.
Connor Garland's O.T. winner was great.
It's pretty good.
Actually, I think it was Detroit because when Detroit made it 4-3,
I was like, all right, they don't have it today.
Early start.
Everyone's all shook up.
You know, Detroit is desperate for these points at home.
All of the excuses baked into it.
And then the Petey play.
The patience that Petey showed on the Brandstrom goal to make it 4-4,
I thought was great because he was at the side of the net.
I think he actually kind of whiffed on what he originally wanted to do,
but kept his composure and set up Brandstrom 4-4,
and then the DeBrusque hat trick to win it.
And DeBrusque scoring
a hat trick and the OT winner
exemplified everything about this game
because I don't know if I mentioned this already, but in the intermission
interview with Murph going into the third,
did you see this?
He was talking about and he was spitting all the usual
cliches. Didn't know the score. He said,
now we got a 2-2 game going into third
and Murph took a pause. He's like, you're up
by one. He's like, oh, good.
It's way better.
So a bunch of people texting in, and this is predictable.
Keith the Grip texts in, what's wrong with you guys?
You watch the Canucks game live, and you PVR the football game.
I don't PVR sports.
During intermissions, you watch the football game.
If you hit the skip button after each play,
it usually goes straight to the next play.
Why don't you guys utilize PVR?
Because live sports aren't meant to be watched
on PVR. We've had this argument
before. It's not even an argument.
I understand why some people do it.
It's work related.
Young kids related.
You want to
put them to bed and then you watch the game.
I don't play that.
I need to watch the games live.
I've got a buddy that PVRs all the Red Sox games.
You can't even text this guy because he's scared you might say something
about the Red Sox game.
How do you PVR sports, man?
I don't get it.
I hate it.
I can't stand it.
I hate watching something that I know has happened two hours ago.
I'm the same.
Three hours ago.
I can't get into it.
And I think some of it is I watch games with social media
and I want to see the reaction as much as I hate some of the reaction.
I do want to see some of the reaction.
I want to have analysis on the spot while it's happening.
I cannot watch PVR games.
They don't interest me.
Keith, again,
who now is Keith the dinosaur.
He's no longer Keith the grip.
He's moved back into paleozoic era.
Nice.
Huh?
Yeah.
Also,
do you not have like,
don't take this the wrong way.
Cause you might not,
do you not have friends?
Do you not have like,
people are texting me.
It's hard not to take it the wrong way.
Yeah.
Right.
Exactly.
That's why I preface it with,
don't take this the wrong way.
Are you friendless?
I don't understand how you could watch a game on PVR if you have any friends.
I'm on my phone.
You would get these random texts like,
I'll send texts to you and Martin Aguilar and just be like,
one word, idiots.
Idiots.
Or something like that.
Fire everyone.
I don't know what game he's talking about.
At the game, five seconds ahead of Halford, and be like, oh, come on. And he's like, I'm everyone. I don't know what game he's talking about. At the game,
five seconds ahead of Halford, be like, oh, come on.
And he's like, I'm watching. I'm not there.
If you want to make sure you don't have friends, tell them don't text me because I'm PVRing the game.
All right, rant over. We got
a lot more to get to in the Halford and Brough show on Sportsnet
650. We are at the midway point
of the show. We got an open segment coming
up next so we can dive into any topic that you
want that we haven't covered yet. We should get into some
of the other NHL stories from the weekend because there were
a lot of them. We can look ahead to this week
for the Vancouver Canucks. Another pivotal week
with a lot of big storylines about who might
return to the lineup. 8 o'clock
Kevin Woodley from NHL.com and InGoal Magazine

You're asking yourself right now, hey, is that ACDC?
The answer is, kind of.
This is one of those new songs that they play and everyone's like,
ugh, I'm going to go get a beer.
Except it's not a new song by the artist.
Like a cover band of the artist.
Play Thunderstruck!
But not really an actual cover.
That's close enough.
I'm trying to think of some names here.
BCDC?
That's actually a known,
but that's actually...
That's a real cover band.
That's a real cover band.
Yeah, they're good.
Highway to a Bad Place.
Highway to Heck?
There you go.
Highway to Heck.
Off-ramp to Purgatory?
7.34 now,
on a Monday.
We're talking ACDC, of course,
because we made the announcement this morning
right here on the Halford & Buff show.
Sportsnet 650 is welcoming ACDC,
the Power Up Tour 2025.
That's on April 22nd, 2025 at BC Place.
Tickets go on sale this Friday,
December 6th at 10 a.mam at Ticketmaster.ca.
However, you can get
tickets from our show beginning
today. Every day this week, we're giving away
a pair of tickets to see ACDC
in April. All you gotta do,
and this has proven to be a bit of a challenge,
but some of you have figured it out.
You need to have an ACDC
themed text.
It can be clever pun,
whatever sort of play on words.
You can use titles of songs.
You can make some sort of allusion to the band,
whatever the case,
it just has to be clever and witty.
And it would be nice if it was about sports.
I know we're asking a lot.
Don Barlimer text line is 650,
650,
put a ticket emoji into your text.
Best one wins a pair of tickets at the end of the show.
So the PVR debate, as usual, and we've had it before,
has, of course, kicked off.
Lots of arguments and some people texting in.
I'd love to, this is an unsigned text,
I'd love to interact live on social and talk with friends
while the game is taking place.
It's just not realistic all the time,
so the PVR at least lets me watch the game rather than read the paper the next
day about it.
Either way, I'm glad you guys can prioritize live sports in the moment.
I had to coach hockey Sunday at one o'clock is our start time.
That's our home date.
Not a great time.
You're either getting the start of the Seahawks game or you're getting the end of the Seahawks game.
And on Sunday, I had both.
I had both endings of the Canucks game and the Seahawks game.
So I actually watched the Canucks game, the overtime,
walking through the hallways to the dressing room,
and I watched the end of the Seahawks game during the warm-up. I was
like, kids, get dialed in. I'm just going to watch this football game. I'm just going to watch the
end of it. You guys do what you got to do. And I just realized, again, that next Sunday it's going
to happen again because the Seahawks are playing at one o'clock and the Canucks are playing at one
o'clock, a rare start time for Rogersgers arena sunday one o'clock against the
tampa bay lightning which is actually a great game to bring kids to if you can um but uh so
we're gonna have another issue i'm gonna have to miss this kids hockey game i mean they're just
they're not even that good that's it's too it's one of the two like there's so many break so many
defensive breakdowns and i'm sitting there going why am I wasting my time with you guys?
I'm excited.
I'll be able to sleep in and still watch the game.
If anything was ever going to solve the PVR debate,
it was do I either PVR the game or quit on the children?
The answer is quit on the children.
Definitely quit on the kids, right?
I feel bad.
I do feel bad.
I mean, some people took this to heart.
Yeah.
Like when I said, are you friendless?
I wonder why they take that so personally.
I mean, it's not like? I wonder why they take that so personally.
It's not like I'm calling you a loser.
I do apologize. One person got very upset. They said it came across
as tone deaf.
Sounds like something a friendless person
would say.
Sounds like what a friendless loser with a PVR would say.
I don't know. You tell me.
But anyway, I think we made amends.
One guy says PVR is dedicated to Walker Texas Ranger.
Right.
If you have a PVR.
Do you think Walker Texas Ranger is the most PVR show of all time?
Maybe, yeah.
It's definitely a network TV show.
Walker Texas Ranger Blue Bloods.
There's a lot of Blue Bloods.
That's my dad's favorite show.
Anytime I go over to see him, he's watching Blue Bloods. There's a lot of blue bloods. That's my dad's favorite show. Anytime I go over to see him, he's watching blue bloods.
And then all the Chicago Fire men.
Not now, son.
Blue bloods.
Yeah, right.
Tom Selleck's talking.
It's the new Matlock.
Yeah.
Totally.
Right.
That's a good way of saying it.
There is a new Matlock.
It is, yeah.
Other than the new Matlock.
Kathy Bates.
Yeah.
It's a female Matlock.
Is her name Matlock?
I don't know. I think so. I should have researched that. The show is called Matlock. Kathy Bates. Yeah. It's a female Matlock. Is her name Matlock? I don't know.
I think so.
The show is called Matlock.
No, I know.
That's just to draw people in.
Do a quick 180 on you.
There's no Matlock at all.
Anyway, okay, let's get focused here.
We got a lot to get into in the final 90 minutes of the program.
A reminder, Kevin Woodley is going to join us at 8 from InGoalMagazine and NHL.com. We will talk
about what was a great weekend for the Vancouver Canucks
with their OT wins on Friday
and Sunday. We can also get into some goalie
talk with Kev as well. And then at 8.30,
we're going to do what we learned. Get yours in. Dunbar
Lumber text line is 650-650.
We are also going to announce
the winner of the ACDC tickets. We're doing
that every day this week on the
Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
Stories from around the National Hockey League this weekend.
We kind of touched on this already.
We should probably just circle back
and confirm everything that happened
because the Canucks were at one point rumored to be in
on highly touted Columbus Blue Jackets
defensive prospect David Juracek.
They did not ultimately land said player.
He is on his way to Minnesota for a bounty of draft picks.
It was a 2025.
I'm going to go through all of it.
Okay.
I'm going to 2025 top five protected first round pick a 2027.
I didn't even know you could draft a trade that far in advance.
2027 second round pick 2026 third round pick and a 2026 fourth round which one was the top
five protected uh this year's first round pick why did they think they were gonna just like
crash down in spectacular well yeah minnesota's sending it to columbus right yes yeah i guess
you just do it right just in case like who knows what happens, right? Yeah, sure. You guys are pretty good. I hope David Juracek doesn't crater your team.
Jason, the St. Louis Blues once went from being the dead last team in the NHL to a Stanley Cup champion.
So it could work the other way around.
You could go from being a—
And we always hear about it.
Yeah, right?
Just in case.
The one example.
Just in case.
So I think that Juracek might be in the lineup when Minnesota takes on Vancouver on Tuesday
because they immediately sent him down to their AHL affiliate in Iowa
and then immediately called him up.
I don't really know what the demotion is.
Send a message.
I guess, yeah.
They're like, hey, we can do this.
It's in our arsenal.
So I'll be curious because they got a –
I think the bigger decision for the Canucks
is not whether David Juracek starts.
It's who starts in goal for the Wild.
Hopefully it's Marc-Andre Fleury and not Philip Gustafson
because Gustafson,
and he's not getting the attention
because he's Philip Gustafson,
but if the votes were in right now
for the Vezina,
he'd have to be in the top three.
He'd have to be a finalist.
Yep.
9.29 save percentages.
The cope I'm seeing.
What's his game like? I said The cope I'm seeing... What's his game
like? I said the cope
I'm seeing from Senators fans about
Decord and Gustafsson right now.
Oh, right, because they had both of them. They had both of them
and they just let him go. Frittered him away.
He's excellent, though. He's been a pretty highly
touted prospect. He originally, I believe, was drafted
by Pittsburgh and came up
through their system and then was
traded to Ottawa.
And yeah, he's, I don't know,
there were some concerns about him and his physical,
you know, I don't know how to describe it,
but he's not the most in shape goaltender in the world.
So there was some thoughts around
whether his longevity would be there and his consistency.
But hey, this is two out of three years now with Minnesota.
He's been pretty darn good.
Are you suggesting he's not a specimen?
Is that what you're saying?
That's what the word out there is, yes.
Every save he makes, he's like, oh!
Oh, the hurt!
God, oh, God.
Jeez, we get up again.
Still the first period, Phillip.
Other news from the National Hockey League yesterday.
North Vancouver native Macklin Celebrini,
living up to the hype of being the first overall pick
in this year's draft.
The San Jose Sharks rookie was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month
after collecting seven goals and five assists in 14 games in November.
Made even more impressive by the fact that he missed
three weeks in October after re-aggravating a hip injury.
Bounced right back into the lineup in November,
looked like he didn't miss any time at all.
I love the very quiet whispers about the Four Nations faceoff
where they're like, maybe you don't take Bedard
in that sort of young, 13th forward you're learning role.
Imagine if Celebrini gets the tap and not Bedard.
I think Bedard's starting to play a little bit better.
He's scoring some goals.
He is.
And he's going to get a lot of attention tonight
because he's playing the Leafs on the Amazon game.
But Celebrini, let's take Bedard out of the equation
because Bedard is going to be fine.
He's still going to be a good player.
I think the more important thing to note
is that Celebrini is playing really well for the Sharks,
and he seems
to be not only talented offensively but a pretty complete player defensively and he wins a lot of
puck battles and the sharks are not a they're not good but i think they're better than people
expected and yes he's got a lot to do with that he's yeah him and will smith together uh not the
one that slapped chris, the other Will Smith.
They've been very good to start the year.
That's exciting for them. You know who else is
really exciting? Young players that
he finished basically runner-up to Celebrini
for Rookie of the Month? Mavie Michkoff.
I watched Philadelphia in overtime against
St. Louis on Saturday, and
he scored a breakaway goal to win it in
overtime. How much are Habs fans
hating the fact that they passed on Mitch Koff?
Probably a lot because he looks like a game breaker.
And he came over to the NHL way quicker than everyone expected.
So the subtext there is that –
The Habs are terrible, man.
He might –
The Habs are the Rangers, and the Rangers are in a mess, right?
The Habs are just –
They just defensively, they're a disaster.
Okay, one story at a time.
So Mitch Koff, there is that rumbling,
and I think Freed touched on this in an early 32 Thoughts,
that he might have snookered some of the teams at the draft
to decide where he wanted to go
by suggesting to some teams that I will be in Russia.
And he ended up in Philly?
The talks are that he wanted to go to Philly.
Okay.
Yeah, so he just cut him and his agents sort of massaged the situation, if you will, And he ended up in Philly? The talks are that he wanted to go to Philly. Okay. Yeah.
So he just cut him and his agent sort of massaged the situation, if you will.
Because I think if you were to do a redraft, and it's early days for a redraft,
but if you were going to do a redraft, you'd be like,
Mitchkoff looks like the real deal and is scoring goals and big goals too.
Why Philly though?
Well, I mean, Philly is a cool sports town, man.
It's a cool franchise. What do you get against Philly?
You're going to get an opportunity there.
Yeah, I guess. But Philly, out of all the
teams, that was the one team you wanted to go to?
Well, they're... Just up the torts, for one.
Well, it just seems a little odd.
I mean, it's a nice town, I know.
He was like, I love an abusive
coach. I'm just saying, out of
all the teams to pick,
I'm used to it.
I feel at home.
My coach is yelling at me and benches me for no reason in particular.
I feel just like I'm back in the KHL.
Montreal lost 6-3 to Boston yesterday,
and you mentioned that they are in a bad way.
They're in a very bad way.
And I do wonder how much longer Martin St. Louis is going to be on that job.
I know that there was rumblings that they wanted to get to the front of the line to get Jim Montgomery before the Blues were like, ah, not so fast.
So now I don't.
We've got his phone number.
Right.
We've got his locker still here.
We saved it from when he was the assistant coach.
Actually, we've been tampering for months.
He had their gear.
When he showed up wearing a Blues sweater, I was like, he never got rid of that Blues sweater. He kept it for his time in St. Louis. Here's a question for you.
Yeah. The Canucks
just played Ottawa,
Buffalo, and Detroit
on this trip. Yeah. Beat them all.
Who was
the most impressive
of those three? Because those
are the three that have been trying to break through forever
in that division. And who was the least impressive? The least impressive of those three, because those are the three that have been trying to break through forever in that division, and who was the least impressive?
The least impressive was Ottawa.
Yeah, I think so too.
Most impressive, maybe Buffalo?
Yeah.
Detroit's weird.
Detroit-Vancouver games, the last four of them, I think,
four or five, have been really entertaining, really spicy affairs.
Remember there was the Jake Wallman walk-off gritty?
Where is he now?
Gritting now, Wallman?
I know you're in San Jose.
So when I watch the games, I'm like,
oh yeah, Detroit's fiery and spicy and they're interesting,
but they don't seem to do it with regularity.
Do you think they hate watching the Canucks?
They're like, Quinn Hughes, we should have drafted that guy.
Hugh Suter, we shouldn't have let that guy just walk.
Could have got him for a pretty affordable price.
I mean, Hironi didn't play, obviously, against the Red Wings,
but there's probably some fans in...
What?
Did you call him Hironi?
Hironic.
There's probably some fans in Detroit that are like,
I think AJ's got that on the menu, right?
Should have kept this guy, right?
Sorry, repeat that?
There's probably some guys in Detroit that think,
hey, we should have kept this guy.
Detroit Ronnie?
Detroit Harone?
Detroit Harone is pretty good.
Detroit Harone?
Go back and check the tape.
I swear to God, you called him Harone.
Who do you think is...
Well, I probably did.
Regardless.
It doesn't matter.
Who do you think is the most frustrated fan base?
Detroit, but barely.
It's hard, man.
If I was Ottawa, I'd be like,
God, guys, pull it together.
Pull it together.
They lost to Anaheim last night.
I know, but in a shootout.
Trevor Zegers scored in a shootout.
I think the problem with saying that
Buffalo would be the most frustrated
is because that ship has sort of sailed.
It's like they're the most apathetic.
They just kind of stopped showing up on mass. Remember, we had Paul Hamilton on the show on Friday. is because that ship has sort of sailed. It's like they're the most apathetic.
They just kind of stopped showing up on mass.
Remember, we had Paul Hamilton on the show on Friday.
He's like, there's some games where they show up,
and there's some games where they don't. That's where I feel Buffalo is at.
The rot has been for the better part of a decade,
whereas I think Detroit fans,
and because the record-setting playoff streak
and the success is a little more recent
than Buffalo has had's had it quite
frankly never, I think they're probably the most
frustrated. Also, there's got to be a level
of frustration in Detroit with
the coronation and the
return. The prodigal son, Steve Eisenman,
comes back. He's got this great record
in Tampa Bay. Everything's going to go
great, and then he comes to Detroit and it doesn't work.
Yes? I can't confirm he did say
Haroni, by Haroni. Good.
I mean, Haroni didn't play, obviously, against
the Red Wings. That's a
Haroni right there. This idiot said Haroni.
Haronius?
That's fine. I had the break. I tried to make a
joke during one of the commercials with Laddie and instead
of saying Jason.Mortgage, I said Jason.com.
Don't go to Jason.com. The whole thing
is that it's Jason.Mortgage.
What you said, don't go to Jason.com, go to Jason dot com. The whole thing is that it's Jason dot mortgage. What you said, don't go to Jason dot
com, go to Jason dot com. Too busy trading
barbs with Laddie. We didn't even trade.
I just threw one out there. That new arena
in Detroit has yet to host
a playoff hockey game.
Not a one. I was actually thinking that
while the Canucks were playing the Red Wings. I was like,
it was actually pretty fun when the Red Wings
were in the playoffs. Like Joe Lewis Arena
had some character.
It's time.
Not that I'm cheering for these teams, but when original six teams or even some of the older teams, like a Buffalo, right,
that's been in the league for a long time,
when they miss the playoffs for a long time, something is missing.
You know, Montreal not being good is disappointing
because big games in Montreal, You know, Montreal not being good is disappointing because big games
in Montreal,
you know,
they had the
centennial for
the Bruins
yesterday
and of course
they picked
the Montreal Canadiens
as the opponent
for that game.
Man,
the Bruins and the Habs
for decades
just had
these great
rivalries
and there'd be times
when Montreal
would dominate.
For the most part, that's been how it is.
But obviously lately, Boston started to get the upper hand.
And you had these great rivalries, you know,
whether it's Subban and Marchand or whoever, right?
Montreal now, when we talk about them,
I really find it tough because they're not that interesting.
They're just bad.
I have many a Hab fan in my life, my friends,
and the general consensus I get from them is that
they're tired of being irrelevant.
You can be a lot of things.
You can be rebuilding.
You can be retooling.
You can just be bad.
But at a certain point, you go from –
because those teams can be intriguing when you're
bad like people are paying attention to you're having an overhaul you're firing your coach you're
firing your general manager the start of a rebuild is interesting now but three years into it less
interesting and it's very difficult for that to happen in montreal where the game and the
organization are hallowed when you're irrelevant and they are they're an irrelevant team right now
what they do does not matter.
It doesn't resonate across the league.
Like, they're bad right now.
They don't have a Mitch Cuff.
They don't have a Celebrini.
They don't have a Bedard.
You know, they'll be like,
we got Lane Hudson.
Okay, great.
Like, let's, you know,
what's your star power in Montreal?
You know, who's the guy
that you're going to watch?
If Habs fans are listening, feel free to agree or disagree.
Text in to the Dunbar-Lumber text line at 650-650.
I just think it's disappointing that the Habs have become this irrelevant team.
I'd rather talk about Minnesota than I would about Montreal.
Because they're relevant.
Next on the schedule.
Right, they're also playing the team.
But they've got a star player.
They're winning games with regularity.
And now you can almost talk yourself into them being interesting
because it's like, is this the year, is this the team
that the Minnesota Wild are finally, use that word again, relevant?
Whereas with Montreal, when we talk about,
oh, they might fire Marty St. Louis,
it's crickets in the in-basket because everyone's like,
well, whatever.
We'll fire them.
They're terrible and irrelevant.
Yeah, and it's not right that Montreal's in that position.
It's not.
Ottawa's a more interesting team than Montreal.
Who would have ever said that?
Maybe Montreal should have taken Michkov, like you guys said.
Speaking of Canadian teams that are going through a bit of a rough patch right now,
the Calgary Flames are falling back to earth in a major way.
A couple good wins for the Pittsburgh Penguins, though.
One of them, of course, against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
6-2 win for the Penguins, so that's a 6-2 loss for Calgary and Pittsburgh.
Now, all of a sudden sudden you're starting to see
some of the holes in the Calgary
roster they allowed 17 goals
over this most recent road trip Dustin Wolf isn't
going to play with a 940 the whole season
not going to go that way
he's letting them down I do feel bad
like I do wonder if he's getting tired
already I know it's December but he's
playing a lot and facing
a lot of pucks and I know he's only 23 I know that and a lot and facing a lot of pucks. He's only
23. And it's his first tour
through being a starter in the NHL.
He'll have his struggles, for sure.
I do wonder if this
signals the beginning of the reality
sinking in for Calgary. It's like, okay,
we did well through October and November.
We surprised everyone. We
played hard, but they just don't have the talent
to compete on a regular basis.
They lost Manta pretty early in the season, too.
Yeah, and it's funny because people will roll their eyes
at losing Anthony Manta, but it matters to a team like that
that is kind of light on talent to begin with.
He can do certain things on the ice that other guys just can't
because of his size and his ability.
They miss a guy like that.
It's not like, I'll use Vancouver as the example.
Vancouver's been able to withstand
some pretty serious body blows at forward.
Right?
Look at the guys that have missed
significant time this season.
JT Miller, Brock Besser, Dakota Joshua.
That's going to sink other teams.
And now Hironi.
Right, and now Hironi on the blue line.
And no foreboard.
No board, no Hironi.
What are you going to do?
But again, I know we talked a lot in the...
Download the hour one of the podcast too.
Apple, Google, Spotify.
In hour one, we talked a lot about
the depth of the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks' three leading goal scorers right now
are DeBrusque, Suter, Garland.
You know, it's remarkable
when you think about the depth that this team has.
If you would have told me nine games into the season
when DeBrusque had zero goals
and, you know, actually Garland and Suter
didn't get off to flying starts goal scoring wise as well,
that by December 1st,
those would be your three leading scorers.
I'd be like, well, something must have gone wrong.
The Canucks are,
and I'm going to throw this out there,
jinx, okay? The Canucks are, and I'm going to throw this out there, Jinx, okay?
The Canucks are very comfortably in a
playoff spot.
Yeah, they got games in hand on everybody.
Well, and it's just the teams on the outside
looking in.
I think Calgary's going to drop out.
Okay, they're currently in the second wildcard
spot.
I think they're going to drop.
Well, they're just not, they're not that good.
They got off to a good start. It was encouraging, but you look at just not, they're not that good. They got off to a good start.
It was encouraging,
but you look at the lineup,
they're not that good
and they'll probably sell
some pieces off
before the trade deadline.
If they do,
there's going to be
a lot of interest in players
like Anderson and Wieger,
whatever.
I think Wieger's going to make
Team Canada, by the way, too.
I think so, too.
And then let's say,
let's say that Colorado,
and they're currently
just outside the playoff picture,
let's say they take Calgary's spot.
So Calgary drops out, Colorado goes in.
Who else could make a charge?
Look at the teams outside the picture.
Utah?
Big win for them on Saturday night in Vegas.
Maybe St. Louis with the coaching change,
but I still look at that Blues roster
and I think it's not a very good team.
And then look at the teams below.
Anaheim, Seattle, San Jose, Nashville, Chicago.
The fact that Nashville is not a factor
has really thrown a wrench into the West.
Well, not a wrench
because it's good for the Canucks.
Yeah.
But it's just a factor
that I think a lot of people
didn't see coming.
It's just one less playoff team
that you got to beat out.
Yeah, naturally.
Especially if you're on the bubble
and aiming for one of those
wildcard spots.
I think the Canucks
should be aiming for top three
in the division.
The Canucks are four points back of Vegas,
and they've got two games in hand on Vegas.
The fact they're able to get these wins in Buffalo and Detroit
and get that win in Boston,
when they probably didn't deserve to win,
but they blocked a bunch of shots and Lankanen was really good.
That's huge,
considering what they're going through.
And hopefully,
they're going to get some players back.
Now, what often happens,
I have to admit,
when teams get their star players back,
like let's say JT Miller is back,
maybe Thatcher Demko plays.
Both those things could theoretically happen
on Friday against Columbus at home.
But sometimes what happens is the other guys go,
huh, everyone's back.
Right, go back to my regular role.
Or no, not bring your 110% effort.
That's also part of it, yeah.
So that is going to be a challenge,
guys actually returning to the lineup.
But for now, the Canucks,
it may not be pretty all the time but they're getting the results and you can say what you will about
their strength of schedule that hasn't been that tough whatever they should be proud of themselves
the way that this road trip has gone and the way that multiple guys have have stood up and made an impact, whether that's Quinn Hughes, Kevin
Lankanen, Jake
DeBrus, Connor Garland,
Pew Suter. I mean, the list
goes on. And that's the most
impressive thing. Guys are
finding
ways to contribute. Petey is
putting up points again, even though he's probably
not quite at 100% yet.
And it's exciting that
they're finding ways to win. They've got to keep going because
it's not going to get any easier in December.
They've got a lot of games. They're still
going to be missing Filip Peronic. We don't
know what Thatcher Demko's going to be like.
We don't know when JT Miller's
going to be back. You're listening to the Halford
and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650.
We're going to talk a little goalies and other NHL
with Kevin Woodley coming up on
Sportsnet 650.
