On a Friday.
Not just any Friday.
This show could not be more random.
Just couldn't be.
How is it random?
We do this every Friday.
But within the scope of today's show, it's Valentine's Day.
It's Fiesta Friday.
Impassioned discussion on Canada-U.S. political relations.
Showing good faith with our brothers down in Mexico.
Ten minutes of conversation on the Seattle Seahawks new offensive coordinator.
It's unbelievable.
We got a band together with our friends to the south border.
And now we're going to talk pizza.
AJ's going to join us in just a sec here.
We are in hour two of the program.
Hour two is brought to you by Jason Hom a sec here. We are in hour two of the program.
Hour two is brought to you by Jason Hominuk from Jason.mortgage.
If you love paying too much for your mortgage, then don't let Jason shop around to find

You are listening to the Haliford and Brough Show.
This entire show, the entire enchilada, if you will, is brought to you by Vancouver Honda,

They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can help with anything you're looking for, sales, financing, service,
or parts. We are coming to you live from the Kintec studio, Kintec footwear and orthotics,
working together with you and Step. To the phone lines we go, our next guest is the owner and
proprietor of AJ's Pizza on East Broadway and AJ's Winter Gardens Florida. AJ joins us now
on the Haliford and Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. What up, AJ?
Winter Gardens, Florida. AJ joins us now on the Haliford and Brush Show on Sportsnet 650.
What up, AJ?
What is going on?
A little spicy today.
I like it.
Yeah, you and I are, we're going to tone down the spice a little bit today,
AJ.
Tone down the rhetoric and talk about pizza.
You know what?
AJ hasn't asked us anything for us, and I believe it's about Canada and hockey.
Two of our favorite things.
Go ahead, AJ.
Yes, I do.
I do.
So what would be your guys' Mount Rushmore
for Team Canada?
Okay, so we, first off, we're gonna do the men's program
because they're playing right now, obviously,
and they're gonna play on Saturday.
Right.
And the women's should have their own
Mount Rushmore anyway.
So I was thinking, the most three obvious ones
that jumped to mind, so three of the four spots
on Mount Rushmore, and agree with me if you will, Jason,
Lemieux, Gretzky, now Crosby. Yeah. The fourth one. Paul Henderson for me. It's got to
be, right? It's got to be someone from the 72 Summit Series. I was thinking maybe Espoo because
of the speech, but then it's maybe Henderson because of the goal. Yeah. Where do we go there?
I like that. I mean, and you know what? I agree with those, that top three, because I mean,
obviously I grew up with Mario and Gretzky and Mario, so I mean, I love that. I mean, and you know what? I agree with those, that top three, because I mean, obviously I grew up with Mario and Gretzky
and Mario's, I mean, I love that guy.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's amazing.
Now, I wanna turn our attention to our other favorite topic
not involving pizza or hockey, gambling.
Jimmy Aces led me astray in the Super Bowl
because Dallas Goddard, for those that are unaware,
did not win MVP and did not have a monster game.
Is Jimmy going to be able to make amends this week with a pick?
What does Jimmy Aces?
You know, Jimmy, because we're so light in sports and Jimmy's obviously a very
astute person and he's just staying away from tomorrow's game.
That's fair. He's just always staying away.
And then I mean, if you want to go to the NBA
all-star game, he'd probably take team truck.
Okay.
You know you've got a problem when you're betting
on the NBA all-star game.
Right, you know you've got a big problem
when you're betting.
Right, right.
And to dovetail, you know, to run through the weekend,
to dovetail what you guys said,
it sounds like me, many of you,
forgot that it was Valentine's
Day. So if you did, there is still room at AJ's tonight. Nothing says like a Detroit
roadie. Nothing says love. Nothing says love like that, right? And then obviously the heavyweight
tilt tomorrow, which is going to be great. AJ's will be rocking. It'll be a lot of fun.
I know there's some bar seats left, but it's gonna be a great vibe. And then happy Outroll Day Sunday. And then that rolls
into Family Day on Monday, where we have hockey again.
It'll be a heavyweight tilt if you forget Valentine's Day.
Two heavyweight tilts this weekend.
Oh man. Hey, AJ.
If you're smart, you do like me. And I'm taking my wife because I forgot the seasons for lunch.
So there you go.
Beautiful.
Hey, buddy, thanks for doing this as always.
We really appreciate it.
Enjoy the weekend.
It should be a lot of fun.
And for everybody listening, go to AJ's this weekend and have a good time.
Thanks, dude.
Thanks.
Everybody enjoy the weekend.
Take care.
Thanks.
That's AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway here on the Haliford and Breast Show on Sportsnet
650.
We are quickly going to move to Montreal here where Tom Galidi from nhl.com is going to
join the program. Andy is going to join the program.
Andy is currently efforting that one.
So we haven't really talked a lot about the actual
game last night.
And I know it's kind of taken a back seat because
of everything else that is going on.
But from a pure hockey standpoint, my biggest
takeaway of last night is that the Kichuk brothers
did everything they possibly could to make this
team look rich.
And I know you weren't that impressed with them through the first and second periods,
but I thought their quick strike ability in the third period and the fact that they won
that game 6-1 set the table pretty nicely for a grudge match on Saturday.
We're going to go now to the phone lines.
Tom Galidi from NHL.com is going to join us here on the Haliford and Brush show on Sportsnet
650.
Morning, Tom.
How are you?
I'm doing well. Just recovering from two really exciting days of hockey
and looking forward to another one tomorrow with two, you know,
a double header of a rivalry game is going to be fun.
So how big a statement was that from the Americans last night?
I think, I mean, you know, they, they started kind of slow.
I think it's the way Finland plays, but you know, the third period,
they pulled away there and kind of showed what they could do offensively you know the
Kachuk brothers coming together on the one line with Jack Eichel was a kind of
a turning point I thought for the US in the second period there kind of got them
going they were really having on they didn't they had the hard time getting
some stuff going get anything going in the second period until that line went
together and that sort of pushed them in the right direction and then you saw
what they could do and how quickly they can score in the third period there.
So I think that probably gave them the confidence they want heading into that second game against
Canada for sure.
You know, in a short tournament like this where the rosters are thrown together and
guys don't have that much familiarity with one another, certain duos or trios or whatever
will jump to the forefront as being the sort of leaders or the heartbeat of the teams.
So for me right now, it seems like after one game, and it's a short sample size, but it's Crosby and McKinnon, the Nova Scotia boys for Canada. And then I think
last night, if there was any doubt, it kind of cemented it that this is the Kachaks team now,
and they're the real heartbeat of this thing moving forward. Yeah, definitely. I think you're
right on both of those. Obviously there's the familiarity with the Krause and McKinnon and they've
been waiting for something like this for a while, right? And the Kachaks have been waiting
their whole lives, right? So you could tell those guys really cherished the opportunity
and rose to the occasion for that first game. And I think we're going to see more of that
on Saturday night. And then you'll see some other, obviously, like Conor McDavid, you know, Connor McDavid, I thought was fantastic in the first game too. And, you
know, awesome math that I thought he'd start getting his game going as that game went
on last night and some other players, I think, like you said, you haven't played
together, so it's hard to find chemistry. I think maybe there's a little more
familiarity among Canadian players than the US players. They all know each other,
but getting, you know, finding what combinations work in the line, there's not a lot of time to do that.
So they're going to have to need to be at their
best Saturday night, both sides try to find
the, those right combinations.
Is there more pressure on Canada on this game
just because Canada didn't win in regulation
in their first one?
And I suppose there is the potential that,
you know, three teams go two and one,
Finland goes oh and three and then Canada, I
suppose would be the odd man out there.
That is a scenario that you brought up.
Yeah.
I thought about that last night, you know, it's
the game tomorrow.
It's not a must win, but it is more of a, you
know, as more, you know, I think the U S if they
lose that game, they still probably get in if they beat Sweden on Monday so you know that I think that's
the right scenario so there is a scenario in which if the US wins this
relation they clinch already in the final Canada can't do that just because
of you like you mentioned they didn't get the get the point and then the US
will be in a position on Monday night where they could theoretically if they
win this game in regulation on Monday they could directly pick their opponent on Monday.
If they, they wanted to. We saw that a long time ago in the Olympics with Sweden.
But yeah, so to get to your point, yes,
there is a little bit more riding on this game for Canada. We know that, you know,
they're probably going to win the game against Finland on Monday.
That's not guaranteed, but like they'll have a good chance in that game. But,
you know, because of that one point they lost,
I think that it does put a little more pressure on them in this game. We're
speaking to Tom Galidi from NHL.com live from Montreal here on the Halford and
Bruff show on Sportsnet 650. Tom the building yesterday when the US played
what was the atmosphere and the vibe like in the Bell Center because these
are pretty interesting times and there's a lot going on outside the world of
hockey and it did sort of resonate in the building yesterday. Yeah well I mean I think that probably
regardless of what was going on but you know politically right now that the
crowd would have been rooting for Finland but I think there's definitely
more of that and you know where there was some booing of the national anthem
you know not not something that I you know that I don't want to hear any teams
anthem get booed so that was a little uncomfortable but you know yeah that I, you know, that I don't want to hear any teams, they have them get booed, so that was a little uncomfortable. But you know, I think
that it was still a pretty good atmosphere, I thought, you know, that I
think the players from the US just, you know, are kind of used to that. A lot of
them who grew up playing World Juniors, if they play up here, we saw, you know,
they get booed, they're the team, or they're the team that's getting rooted
against no matter who they're playing, so they got used to to that and Finland was the team that was Canada's team last night
and you know there were some obviously there was also some players on Finland
team playing Montreal Patrick O'Lanagan, Joel Armia so that you know and some
late Artur Likkonen he used to play here who kind of also got some good
receptions and you know there were obviously popular players so that
you could sense that as well
during the game. One quick one on Finland before we let you go and only
because we're in Vancouver and Kevin Lanken is the other option in that there.
What was the Finnish coaching staff and what were the players saying?
It was a rough night for UC Saros. Did they give any indication that they might be
ready to make a goalie switch going into their second game?
Yeah I think Andy Pennington, the coach give any indication that they might be ready to make a goalie switch going into their second game?
Yeah, I think Andy Pennington, the coach from Finland mentioned last night after the game, he was asked about that is definitely something they're going to consider as far as a goalie change.
And you would think that Kevin Lankinen would be the choice to get the start if they do make a change.
I thought Saros was pretty good for the first two periods, but after that, you know, the first goal, the third period,
there was a deflected off of Finland players
stick, and then he, I don't think in the next one after that, kind of that ended the game pretty much was,
wasn't a great goal that Jake Ensel scored, and things kind of, you know, that kind of unraveled from there.
So you could see possibly them making a change. I thought, yeah, I don't know if it was ever,
even before the first game, you know, Pinnadine said that, you know, UC
Soros is our guy for the first game. He never said he's our guy for the whole
tournament. So I could definitely see that, you know, possibility,
you know, that Lincoln could be the start. Whether we'll find that out that today
we will see shortly. They're supposed to practice in about an hour or so, but
maybe they might not let us know
until we're on the smart balls.
But we'll see how that goes.
It is a day off at the tournament today,
although the teams will practice and sort of decompress
so that they can get ready for Super Saturday.
A reminder, it's two games on Saturday.
It's a double header.
10 a.m. our time, it's Finland and Sweden.
And then of course the big one is at five o'clock our time,
the USA versus Canada from the Bell Center
In Montreal. Hey Tom. Thanks a lot for doing this today. We really appreciate it. Enjoy the day off
I'm sure you'll be working in at the rink and enjoy Saturday. It should be a lot of fun
Thanks very much. That's definitely looking forward to tomorrow for both games
Thanks Tom. Appreciate this Tom Ghalidi from NHL.com live from Montreal here on the Haliford and Bref show on Sportsnet 650.
Yeah, Dave in the green tree text saying if the
US wins in regulations tomorrow, they could not
try their hardest versus Sweden and eliminate
Canada by losing in regulation, assuming a
Sweden regulation win versus Finland.
Not out of the question, given all the anthem
booing.
I'm going to.
Imagine that they do a peaceful protest against Sweden.
Quiet quitting.
Yeah.
Where it's at, just for today.
I was wondering if that, that lost point to
Sweden, that, that Tugel blown lead could catch
up to Canada, a lot has to happen along the way.
Like the, the, the, the, look, there's a chance
that Finland beats Sweden.
Yeah.
Right.
So, you know, and that could all, that could
all be.
Finland beats Canada.
Well, exactly.
Goaling them or something.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, but, but there is that, I think when we
looked at the, the four teams in, in the, in the
tournament, there were two that stood out, Canada
to the United States, and then Sweden, we were
like, well, if there's going to be a team that's
in the final, if Canada to the United States and then Sweden, we were like, well, if there's going to be a team that's in the
final, if Canada, United States trips up, it'll be
Sweden and then Finland is like, we know you guys
try hard, but the talent just really isn't there,
especially without having high skin in there.
Yeah.
I mean, I, Finland was fine through two
periods yesterday and at times they did dictate
the pace, but all that meant was they sort of dragged the game
into a grindy board battle with a lot of checking.
And then once, like I said,
once the Kicheks got put on a line with Eichel,
that game really changed.
The Kicheks are, they're fascinating to me.
They are really fascinating to me,
is that when we talked about,
in the lead up to this tournament,
guys getting
their, uh, their chance to do the international thing.
We talked exclusively about Canada.
We did.
We didn't talk about what the Swedes were doing.
We didn't talk about what the, the Finns and the lineage and the, you know, the,
the sons and grandsons of past finished players that are participating in this
tournament, we talked about the Canadians.
If you heard the Kichuk brothers talk yesterday,
they were waiting for this in a major way,
right on par with how guys like McKinnon and McDavid,
who have also been starved
from this international opportunity,
are trying to relish it as much as possible now.
The added element for the Kichuk brothers is,
one, they both are going through it together.
Two, their old man is about as high ranked.
If you're going to do a Mount Rushmore of great
US players on the international stage, Keith
is in that conversation.
He was on that 96 World Cup team that won it.
Yeah.
And one of the best moments in American hockey
history and his dad was a part of it.
Don't you think his dad has told them stories
about that?
So this stat was making the rounds yesterday,
was the, of course, 96, no, sorry, the 2002 World
Cup.
Keith Kichuck scored four goals and had five points
in a World Cup game against the Russians, 21 years
ago.
And then yesterday his kids had four goals in a
game against Finland, right?
So you're talking with a lineage of great US players.
So there's that dynamic too.
The other really interesting dynamic with those two
is that Matthew has played in big games.
Matthew has won big trophies,
including the biggest of them all, the Stanley Cup.
Brady hasn't. Oh yeah.
Brady hasn't.
Brady actually has never played in the playoffs.
And he's been around for a while now.
Halford?
Yes.
We do have some pretty hot breaking audio from Freage
related to the Canada USA game tomorrow
that I would recommend you let us play.
Let's go ahead.
Okay, so where is this from, the latest 32 Thoughts?
Yeah.
Podcast, okay.
Yeah, it's pretty, pretty, pretty huge stuff.
Okay.
You've got Canada USA on a Saturday night in Montreal.
I say it one more time.
My nipples are erect thinking about it.
Oh no.
That is breaking.
Through a shirt.
It's huge, right?
Through a shirt.
We said hot audio, he meant hot and bothered.
That just changed my relationship with Elliot.
Can we hear that one more time?
Just the last part.
One more time, one more time.
My nipples are erect thinking about it.
Oh no.
It's the best, Kyle's delivery there.
Oh no.
He said it before apparently.
Like are we gonna, know we're all gonna be
Staring at his chest keep that jacket on yeah
Layers of a sudden yeah, I got they got the AC up in the bell center. I see
This is that is a double-breasted jacket. That's worse than shorty saying Thomas Dranceantz erotica. Way worse. Way worse.
Way worse.
Way worse.
Yeah, yeah.
But also kind of interesting.
But also worse.
All right.
It is Ask Us Anything Friday on the Halford and
Bruff show.
And just a reminder, if you want to text in your
Ask Us Anythings, you can ask us about anything.
Text in and if you want to be entered into the
contest for best ask us
anything. $100 gift card to AJ's is on the line. Use the pizza emoji. Ryan the
Vancouver School Board carpenter, ask us anything. Do you think limiting alcohol
to concourse only like they do in English soccer would help make the
atmosphere at hockey games more electric.
It forces the fans to be more locked into the game.
No, the answer to that would be check your phones.
Yep.
Check your phones.
Yeah.
I would wholeheartedly agree with that.
This would also cause you to like chug your drinks
in the concourse though.
Yeah, like that just means you're drinking them
faster and it, you know, it probably doing like
three beers in the concourse as quickly as
possible.
It's going to get you more like riled up.
Yeah.
I know you're going to tell your soccer story,
but let me tell mine first.
Two stories.
So I've only been to one, um, premiership game
and that was at the old, uh, Arsenal stadium
Highbury and there was no alcohol there, like no
concourse, no, no nothing.
Like you do not drink alcohol in the game.
So, uh, the English folks that thought about
this and they said, well, what if we went to the
pub three hours before the game and got
irresponsibly smashed, like enough drunk to drunk to make sure that it carries us
through the entire game.
Would that be a solution?
And it was kind of funny because I'm like, I'm
watching people drink, you know, you know, you
don't often hear drinking described as like
desperate drinking, but there like desperate drinking. Yes.
But there was desperate drinking going on in the pubs
because they wanted to get themselves lubricated enough
where they wouldn't sober up.
It's only a two hour game, so that's good.
Ninety minutes.
Ninety minutes.
And I'm like, this is almost like counterproductive
because you're getting people showing up just like smashed.
Yep.
The lead into a Premier League game is quite fascinating actually, because there's an entire
industry built on the walk to particular grounds. So for example, your beloved New Castle, St.
James's Park, and there's an infographic making its way around social media over the last couple of weeks. Within a 15 minute walk of St. James's, there's 131 pubs.
Yeah. So that says it all, right? Well, that's what you do is you walk a little bit, you stop
at a pub, you have a pint, you pay, you pack up, you go to the next one, have a pint, and then you
do this about five or six times before you get to the ground. It's a very different experience. So the lead into a game is very fueled, I would say.
It's an interesting dynamic.
Now, the story I was gonna tell was that
you talked about the cell phones being removed.
So I went and saw,
God, it must be four or five years ago now,
I saw Dave Chappelle at Roger's Arena.
And for that particular show, there were a litany
of security personnel around the entrances
that took your cell phone and locked it in a pouch
that you couldn't open.
Only the security person could open that pouch
so you could retrieve your phone after the show.
That was one of the greatest social experiments I've ever seen play out in my life.
There were some people that.
Ah.
There were some people.
Did you still get to hold on to your phone or?
You kept your phone in the pouch.
You just, so there were some people that
achieved an immediate sense of Zen.
They were like, you know what?
This is great.
Like I don't have to answer anything because I can't. So the responsibility. I probably started twitching. And the obligation, they were just like, you know what? This is great. I don't have to answer anything because I can't.
The responsibility-
I probably started twitching.
... and the obligation, they were just like, I can actually just go and sit.
Then there was other people that were trying to rip it open with their teeth the moment
that it was locked.
It was like, I'm chewing away on this.
I'm like, you're not getting into that thing.
No way.
They were so desperate to have their phone because they were like, what am I missing
out on?
Have you heard that joke, going to the can without your phone now counts as meditation?
Just a couple of minutes in there, just staring stuff.
Yeah.
Try and stare, if you're at a urinal, just still staring.
No, no, no, just like, number two, you're sitting there
without your phone, right?
Like...
You're raw dogging it.
Now, okay, so now I know this is classic sports talk, right?
We've like, how many people bring their phone in,
and there's going to be like, yeah, I do it. And some people are Like we've like, how many people bring their phone in?
And there's going to be like, yeah, I do it.
And some people that would be like, that's gross.
I can't believe you would have your phone in there
when you're, when you're, you know.
Every now and then when I'm at the gym, there's
a, this really old dude next to me, the elliptical
next to me, he's got no phone, no headphones,
not listening to music, not watching TV.
He's just staring into the, staring into nothingness,
just raw dog in the elliptical. And I'm always in awe of that because I could not ever go to the gym and have to listen to noise
and other people. I got to be focused on either music or I'm watching a video. I don't know how
this guy does it. Obviously, it's a generational thing. He may not have a smartphone, but he just
stares into space and does his workout and I'm
always in awe and I wish I could do that, I don't
have the strength.
So, so like, can you do anything without your phone?
Yeah, of course, but not.
Could you, could you wait and let's say you're at
the, let's say you're at the grocery store, okay?
And there's a long lineup at the till.
Totally check my phone.
Like you have to.
Well, no, I don't have to.
No, no, no, but it sounds like it.
It's definitely a problem.
Sure.
I'll admit that.
OK, we got to get going to break.
We're up against it for time.
When we come back, The Moge is going
to join us fresh off his Super Bowl week, in which he was robbed
from Super Bowl MVP, but still had a good time nonetheless.

So Don and Penn Ticton, time listener of the program, long time
texter texted in this morning.
He writes world politics, freeges nipples, taking your phone to the bathroom
as a form of meditation, Fiesta music.
And we're not even at the Moj yet.
What a morning on the health and rough show.
Still got Moj and Dolly wall to go.
Let's go to the phone lines now, a presentation of the Clayton Public House.
Bob Marjanovic, the Moge, joins us here on the Halford and Brough show on Sports Net
650.
What up, Moge?
Hey, I got to ask you guys a question.
You're talking about phones in the washroom?
Yep.
So, last week when I was down at New Orleans Convention Center, I went to the washroom
and basically go to the urinal. And here I am listening to a guy,
full conversation on his phone
while he's well doing the business, so to speak.
I'm just like, what is going on?
I mean, how could you do that?
You're sitting there having a full conversation
on your phone while you're doing your business.
That's like, that's completely offside.
Was the phone hands-free or did he have one hand
to his ear and his other one?
What do you think?
Moj peaked in.
Moj peaked in.
What?
Excuse me.
What you got there, buddy?
Headset?
I have seen that before.
You've seen it?
The guy doing the phone call at the urinal, yeah.
Oh no, he wasn't, no, no, no.
You've listened to the story wrong.
No.
Moj was at the urinal and he could hear someone in a stall.
Oh, that's even worse.
I thought it was the guy beside you in the urinal.
Yeah, that's much worse actually.
First off, you shouldn't be having a conversation
in the washroom period.
That guy should know that you can tell.
It was like, there's an echo in here.
Yeah.
Right?
It's hollow.
The person on the other end of the phone
knows you're in the bathroom.
Everyone in the bathroom knows you're in the bathroom.
That's completely offside.
I am not okay with that.
That, like, to me, I was just like,
dude, what are you doing?
Seriously, like, I know you're busy,
you've got probably a lot of stuff on your plate,
but to have like a full-blood conversation
while you're in a stall,
everybody else can hear it.
I'm just like, it's like now it's offside.
Moj, I actually want to get on this topic.
I don't know.
It's probably my fault.
I want to ask you first about the BC Lions free agency.
What did they do and how much better are they right now?
Well, I look at it kind of just as wild.
I'll just put this in a nutshell for you.
Number one, two great signings in Micah Awe at Liebacker, Hendrix Hendrix at defensive tackle. That's going to make them more stowed against the run. Two under the radar signings
that receiver in Rice and St. John, the kid out of SFU and Braden Linneas, a local kid
from Northland. Both those guys went down to the NFL, tried out as tight ends, came
back kind of a lost season. And obviously there are no tight ends in the CFL game. So
a little bit different in terms of how you train and all that.
So I expect, especially Lenny, I'm expecting big things from him.
Those guys are going to be kind of under the radar and two players that people
aren't talking about that weren't signings,
but one is actually like a free agent signing and that's linebacker Josh Woods
is coming back off a torn ACL.
They only played that one game before he was hurt.
So that's like adding an impact player.
And I know people might be concerned in terms of a player coming off a knee
injury, but he has done this before with the other knee.
So he knows what hurdles to overcome.
He knows what obstacles are going to be.
So I think you'll be ready to go.
And the other guy that I think is going to have a really big year is Stanley
Berryhill, the receiver who they brought in last year.
Uh, I think that's one of the reasons they let Holland's go.
So, you know, if you want me to sum it up in 60 seconds or less, there you go.
Um, so are you feeling good about it?
Yeah, I do.
I thought they did as well as they could given the fact that, you know, they,
they had some big ticket items on their roster that kind of restricted them in
work, that's in McKinness, but I mean, signing Betz and McInnis, those guys
were up for free agency. So getting those two players back was a big bonus as well.
So Moj, how excited are you for tomorrow's game in Montreal between Canada and the United States?
And I'm not sure if you've heard, but relationships between our country are not exactly normal at this point.
Maybe they should have Mike,
they should elect Mike Silver,
Halfords buddy as president
because he had a great take on that at the Superbowl,
actually very pro Canadian.
You know, it's disappointing that this kind of moves
into the sports world and I'm talking about politics.
It's unfortunate, but sometimes you can't separate the two and like I said, it's just
unfortunate because we go to sports to get away
from the real world, go to sports to get away from
politics and when it starts to creep in, now
you're not talking about any escapes.
So, um, it's disappointing in that regard.
What have you thought about the tournament?
Well, I think the pace has been unbelievable
and the breakneck speed, right?
I mean, to me, that's two of the things that I
kind of, you know, uh, really picked up on.
And, you know, last time I was watching that
game and I was thinking about the evolution of
the game and you know, guys, you've been on
YouTube, you've gone back and seen some of the
Canada cup highlights from, you know, the eighties
or maybe even like the, the first one, the 76 one.
And like, you see some of these highlights from way back when, and you're like,
man, that's like, it's barely get it.
72 looks like beer league for sure.
It's hilarious.
I was like, did they not have a good skates back then or what was going on?
So it's just like, you know, and so, you know, there's probably some 10 year old
kid now that, you know, is watching this right now, this tournament and going, wow, this is unbelievable
as we did when we were that age.
And you know, 40, 50 years from now, he's going to be looking back at this and going,
these guys are horrible.
Well, not horrible, but you get the idea.
It was so slow.
It looks like a beer league.
So I wonder about the evolution of the game and where is it going to be at 30 or 40 years,
just, you know, from one generation to another.
Because, like I said, it's just amazing the speed.
We talked about the NHL and how restricted it gets in the second half of the season as
teams prepare for the playoffs and all of a sudden the ice just becomes smaller and
smaller.
I mean, these guys last night, they're making decisions at breakneck speed.
And the thing is, it looks easy when you're watching from TV,
try being down at ice level.
I suggest anybody that hasn't watched a game from ice level do so because you'll
truly appreciate just how fast the game is.
And the other thing I was thinking about last time watching the Americans,
like, you know, they've got all this firepower on that team.
Dude, I remember when there was one American in the league, Taylor,
if you're listening, driving to work, Tommy Williams, California, Golden
field, that was it.
Now you call it all these players and you're just like, again, just the
evolution of the game and how it's become more of a quote world game and
teams are, are so much better.
But I just look at the Americans and I just, you know, I just look at that
roster and I'm going, that's going to be a problem for Canada.
Yeah. Well, I think the Canadian roster might be a problem for the Americans and I just look at that roster, I'm going, this is going to be a problem for Canada. Yeah.
Well, I think the Canadian roster might be a
problem for the Americans too.
How much pressure do you think the younger stars
like Nathan McKinnon and Conor McDavid feel to
uphold the legacy that Sydney Crosby scored the
golden goal in 2010.
Uh, Mary LeMieux was at the Bell Center, um, for,
for the opener.
And he of course scored that big goal in 1987,
you know, Canadian, the Canadians don't always
come up clutch, but for the most part, Canadians
do win and that's what's expected of these guys
now.
And when you add in the political tensions,
which were in 1972, you better win Canada.
We can't admit that these guys are better at us
than hockey and it feels kind of similar right now
with the Americans.
Well, being eight years old at 1972, um, and
experiencing that whole thing, to me, there was
a different dynamic to that.
And number one, it was good versus evil.
Right.
I don't think we've reached that stage with the
United States.
Or about a week away, maybe.
But the other thing too, was that the Russians were faceless. They were nameless. Like we
didn't know these guys, right? We know who the Kachaks are. We know who Aiko is, Hanif
and etc. We didn't know anything about the Russians, right? I mean, there was, they weren't
playing in the national hockey league. There wasn't this thing called the internet. They
were literally like faceless nameless robots. We got to know them as the series progressed.
You started to learn about Trechuk and
Yakashev and Shadrin and all these guys.
But back then it was just, it was, it was
just a different dynamic.
And you know, like you say, who knows where
we are in a week, but I just think that
was a lot different.
Uh, I know you want to talk about Pettersson.
Um, I, I vowed not to bring up Pettersson
today, but since you wanted to talk about it,
what have you thought about, what have you thought about Pedersen?
Are we in a Pedersen free zone?
Oh man.
I can't do, I can't do US Canada relationships
and Elias Pedersen in the same show.
It's too much heat.
It's too much.
Too much.
Too much.
I need a Valium or something.
Being the nice guy that I am, we could talk about
whatever's in the inbox.
Like you could ask me a food question.
No, no, it's just bruff that can't do it. It's just me the inbox like you could ask me a food question.
It's just bruff that can't do it. It's just me. I did it yesterday. I took the bullets yesterday when I pointed out that he had the fourth lowest ice time among any Swedish forwards. I brought
that up and I got slightly eviscerated for it. So go off Moj. Well here's the thing for
Pedersen for me. To me it's he's running out of time and he's running
out of excuses. Right? When the season started, oh, you know, it was his knee that was troubling
him last year. Well, guess what? Now, you know, we find out that the knee, Pat Personan
was on Donnie and Dolly talking about that. Okay. Okay. When they trade JT Miller, he'll,
you know, he'll snap out of this spunk, you know, the whole chemistry thing is affecting
him. Well, they trade JT Miller. We still haven't really seen anything from Pedersen yet.
Well, when he gets to the Four Nations
and he plays with that elite competition,
and you know, sooner or later you gotta produce, right?
And you're running out of excuses.
I'm actually gonna write a column on this
for Black Cross next week, but it's just like,
the cadets gotta make a decision here, right?
And like I said, to me, the excuses and time are running
out for Elias Feddersen to show something
for the Vancouver Canucks to believe they can move forward
with this guy.
Okay, Moj, before we let you go, Ask Us Anything Friday,
food related Ask Us Anything Friday,
this one comes from me because last week I asked you
about crawfish and not a fan, I get that, that's fair.
So if that wasn't the best meal or best food that you had during your week long
excursion in New Orleans, Moj, what was the best thing you ate in New Orleans?
Oh, the gumbo at commander's palace was outstanding.
But I'll tell you what was really good was a poor boy sandwich that we just,
we were walking back to the hotel from the convention center.
I still can't even get me going on this.
We're walking back to the hotel after we had to go buy some souvenirs and stuff.
So we were just walking back and we found this restaurant and right beside it
actually was the ESPN set. This is kind of a funny story.
So we're in,
we sit down and we look inside and all these ESPN personalities are like, I guess they'd set it up that they were having dinner,
whatever. Shepter walks by, guess what he's on? He's on his phone.
He's on his phone,
like he's tweeting and he walks right out of the room and we look at Shepter.
He's on the phone talking to somebody, but that place there,
and ESPN was very smart because the food there was outstanding.
I can't remember the name of the place,
but the poor boy sandwich that we had and the prawns. Oh my God. The prawns. You know what
the difference when you taste the fresh prawns and the frozen prawns? Oh yeah. These were fresh
and they were monstrous. Here's another thing that I'm going to throw out there for all of our
listeners and you guys will probably chime in on this. Why are chicken wings in the US like on steroids?
You've noticed this too.
So we were down in Scottsdale second week in December
and all the kids on the team wanted to go to Wingstop, which is sort of like the, it's the
equivalent of like a fast food wing place, I
guess the best way to describe it, but it takes
forever to make the wings.
It's not fast at all.
So they came out to the table and everyone was
shocked shocked at the size of the chicken wings. It was like honestly, you're right.
They work out. Yeah, they were lifting, right? I don't know what was going on. It was crazy.
But you're so dead on on this there. It's shocking the in size. The difference.
We were at radio row at the convention Bounty and Wingman had teamed up,
and they had a huge promotion going on.
They were bringing in like, I heard that, check this out,
80,000 bucks for two hours work for an NFL player.
Really?
Just to walk around and do interviews for Bounty.
Think about that.
80K over two hours.
That would be the paper towel company?
Yeah.
Yeah, like, so they get perfect.
The chicken wings.
Oh, okay, yeah, yeah.
I see.
There's a company called Wingman,
well, a franchise called Wingman,
and they're just like, I guess, a chicken wing franchise place, right? So they walk around, you walk
up, you just grab maybe two, three boxes of chicken wings, if you want.
I mean, that was basically where one-
Two, three, four, six, seven.
And then you get like bounce, like you get your bounty towels with it right there. So,
but again, like we were having chicken wings every day, basically giving them to Kowalski
and Mike Whittingham are part of our team.
And I'm just like, and we're just
looking at these things.
They're monstrous.
They're like, it's just stupid.
And then you think, you know, I was a
local eatery lately, I won't name which one,
but it's, you know, one of those restaurants
that in the cactus, Earl's, Brown's type
category.
In that genre.
Yes.
In that genre.
Thank you.
I'm like, I looked at this chicken wing, I'm just like,
what is this?
There's barely any meat on it.
And you've just come from a place where like
you get like basically like a turkey leg.
Yeah.
Or a chicken leg.
It's like those people walking around Disneyland
with a gigantic turkey leg.
I would love.
That's the hotter chicken wing in the US.
I would love to hear like Moj complain about
it and then going back to the kitchen is like,
we've got a guy that's complaining about the
size of the chicken wings.
He's saying, he's saying they were bigger
at the super bowl.
I think he might be crazy.
Should we call the police?
Yeah, exactly.
Oh Moj, this was great buddy.
Thanks for taking the time to do it as always.
We appreciate it.
Enjoy the weekend.
We'll do this again next Friday.
All right, fellas.
Have a great weekend.
Enjoy the hockey.
Yeah, you too.
Thanks.
That's Bob the Moj Marjanovic here on the
Haliford and Brough show on Sportsnet 650.
Sometimes a wing can be too big.
You're kind of like, I don't trust this wing.
I was, that was the unspoken part of the
Wing Stop experience is I was like, this is not
a fine dining restaurant by any stretch of the
imagination.
I can't imagine that they are going out and
hand procuring the finest chickens.
What is your chicken wing eating strategy?
Are you a nibbler or do you take the whole thing down and it looks a little bit?
Yeah, well, like I said-
Also are you a drumsticker of flatty?
I take the whole thing down.
Yeah.
Drumsticker of flatty.
Who nibbles a chicken wing?
No, some people are nibblers.
Some people are crazy.
Some people are nibblers.
I've never-
Do you strip it?
You know what I mean?
Like teeth strip it.
By the way, a chicken wing can never be too big.
Do you ever just, do you put the whole thing in your mouth?
Yes.
And then just pull it down with your teeth?
I put the whole thing in my mouth and the bone comes out?
You're not eating it correctly unless you're trying to create a medical problem for yourself.
There's a lot of questions being thrown around right now and a lot of innuendo.
You asked drums.
I don't even think Adog got the innuendo. I just I wanted to move right past it drums or flats, correct
I've never and the good old centrist Halford. I don't want to offend either side
I've never been like one of the other I do kind of spine
I know what I have an opinion man
you know what I do like doing the best out of the two is taking the flat and
Then pushing the meat down to the end making sort of like a lollipop taking the flat and then pushing the meat down to the end,
making sort of like a lollipop with the bones
and then right off.
Right, fun.
Now again, like I said.
Well clip that video of what you just did.
Leaving that bone clean and dry.
Okay, all right, let's do some, god,
there's innuendo and then there's just,
yeah, I'm going too far.
Yep.
Steve from North Burnaby, not North Burnaby, Steve from Burnaby. I don't know why I said North Burnaby. Because I'm from North Burnaby, not North Burnaby,
Steve from Burnaby.
I'm from North Burnaby.
I don't know why I said North Burnaby.
Cause I'm from North Burnaby.
Right.
Ask us anything.
What is the minimum sum of money you'd
accept on the condition you're no longer able
to associate with any type of sporting activity?
No more following sports news, playing sports,
fantasy and real, watching or coaching.
So someone gives me a bunch of money and they're
like, you have to be out on sports.
Completely.
I don't know, man.
I don't even know if I could take the money.
I don't have much of an identity beyond this.
Yeah.
It's kind of like, you've only got one life to live.
Don't you want to do it doing the things that you enjoy?
This is the only thing I enjoy.
Yeah.
Sports.
He'd be rich but he'd be staring at a wall all day.
This is it.
Watching paint dry.
People have spoken to me about other subjects before and they're like,
shouldn't have done that.
Immediately regret that.
Yeah, I've been trying that for 15 years.
There's not much going on there, less than we thought.
I don't, yeah.
Yeah, Helford is the, he's like, yeah, that's crazy.
That's his constant response to it. Or if it's something bad, I say, well, I add that. Yeah, Halford is the, he's like, yeah, that's crazy. That's his constant response to anything else.
Or if it's something bad, I say, well, that's unfortunate.
At like a dinner party.
What were your thoughts on the economic landscape
of the world going into the next century?
Are you asking?
It's crazy, man.
The cap is going up.
Is that what you mean?
Like there's good people on both sides?
Oh, that's the wrong answer.
I use that one sometimes though, cause you know what?
Most people won't ask a follow up question after that.
You're like Larry David when you wore the mega hat.
Yep.
Just to avoid talking to people.
You know what?
The man had a point.
He had a strategy and he stuck to it.
Mark, the former Anas' Island tax guy goes, to help lighten the conversation from confrontational
geopolitical issues.
I haven't asked you to say anything.
Let's go.
I feel like I'm getting set up here.
Let's go.
If you could change the name of Lake Michigan
to a new name, what would the name be?
Oh, wow.
That's a good one.
Well, there's already a Lake Ontario.
Yeah.
Lake Superior, which is obviously the Canadian
Lake.
That's the Superior one.
How about just Lake Canada?
No.
How about Lake Crudeau?
No.
There we go.
Too far.
Too far.
Too far.
So you'd need, okay, so you'd need to replace Michigan with the equivalent,
so state to province, right?
Mm-hmm.
And you can't use Ontario because Ontario's taken.
Well, you don't have to do that. It feels like the right thing to do, right? We're not't use Ontario. Can't use Ontario. Because Ontario's taken. Well, you don't have to do that.
It feels like the right thing to do, right?
We're not talking about the right thing to do.
We're talking about the thing that would
annoy our neighbours the most.
Which would be Trudeau.
Lake.
You found that answer.
Yeah.
Lake healthcare.
Healthcare lake.
That's actually not bad.
Now we're going to get all the people like,
actually our healthcare system is quite stressed out right now. This is actually not bad. Now we're going to get all the people like, actually our healthcare system is quite stressed
out right now.
It's all like, I would much prefer the American version where the private insurers are just
like, okay, shut up everyone.
You know what?
If I had a political party, it would be called the STFU political party.
Voting for you already.
Yep.
I like it. And every, everyone.
That's your main policy in this dance.
And my main policy is STFU.
We've got things to take care of.
So you guys, if you want to go over there and
argue about nonsense for a bit, you go do that.
But where we are right now, STFU.
Talk less less do more
That's my political party. I don't think it's getting off the ground. I won't try. What would be your first party isolating?
Mm-hmm. I want to support this party. What would be your first policy change?
Renaming it Lake Trudeau
All right, we've got Rick Dollywall coming up next. And-
Actually, you know what?
There's one thing I do want to address before we go to break, because we've got a couple
of minutes.
Colin and Tawason sent forth what we learned.
I think it's very important to the people that have listened to this show for a very
long time.
We're big on traditions and history and doing the same thing over and over again until the
gag stops becoming funny. Classic Alfred and Brough.
Colin Twasin has what we learned.
He writes, I used to wake up on Valentine's Day
to a nice, heartwarming Jason Brough love letter
to someone special.
Now it's a rant about national sovereignty.
What happened to the love?
For those that don't know,
Jason used to spend hours
curating a playlist for Valentine's Day.
There's a lot of Whitney Houston.
A lot.
And each song would be dedicated, more often than not,
to a member of the Vancouver Canucks.
And people used to look forward to it.
Jason used to start it like February 10th.
He'd give himself four days to work on it.
Way more prep than he does for anything else.
Yeah, he used to show up at 5.54 in the morning
instead of 5.57 to get ready for it.
It was remarkable.
And then it just, here's the thing, Colin, though.
When you ask what happens to the love,
sometimes things just end. It ran its course.
It just ran its course.
And also, we ran into some issues with Spotify podcast that we couldn't play,
licensed music. There was also that.
There was also a legal component. So there was that part.
Shh, don't tell them that part. Pull the curtain back.
No, that's people wanna know. We're as transparent as it gets now. We're
walking the tightrope without a a net any day we could get canceled
So this will just fire forward and go with it. We're just gonna be full-on politics now. That's it
I was like
When we come back Dolly Wall is gonna join us.
You're listening to the Alfred and Bref Show on Sportsnet 650.
I say it one more time.
My nipples are erect thinking about it.
Oh yeah, you can milk anything with nipples.
I have nipples, Greg.
Could you milk me?
