What up AJ?
What is going on?
Hey, I am a baseball expert.
So, you know, that's, you know.
We have two baseball experts on in the 7 o'clock hour.
It's pretty good. So look I'm not even going to try and dance around the big news. This is your
time, your microphone, your show AJ. Let everybody know what's going on. So big week. We passed all
of our inspections so we will officially have Nextdoor open sometime early next week, which is a huge
thing and it's a lot closer than Florida.
So that's a good thing.
And then if any of your listeners, because now we're in full expansion mode, know of
any spots in Langley or Burnaby, text it in and let me know.
Could you imagine expansion to Burnaby?
Are there any commercial real estate brokers listening?
No, we're really good.
Some retail brokers?
You know what?
It's, as I'm sure everybody knows,
it's a tough business and happy that we can continue to grow.
That's a blessing.
And yeah, next door is going to be great.
We'll have a nice little opening party.
So yeah, and then game on.
So is next door, like, is it like a nightclub next door?
Like you've got the pizza place and then then go next door to the club.
No, you know what? Actually it's, it's a bit more family friendly. You know,
I mean you've been to AJ's right?
It place gets a little wild and crazy concrete bar. So this,
this is a bit more sit down a little bit more casual. Yeah. Yeah, we're excited
It's been a long time coming. So yeah, but thank you. Well, we're super stoked. We've been in there a million times
we're very much looking forward to the expanded side as well and
You know
It is a tough industry to be in it's very difficult to get any sort of project up and off the ground and running and get
Completed in Vancouver the Canucks may call you for a practice facility in the not too distant future. So
Before they do that though, maybe they can just come check out the place. So what do you got going on this weekend? I know it's, you
know, tons of sports on, including tonight, your newly adopted Florida
Panthers are taking on the Leafs. Well, yes, yeah, well, you know, he's one of our business
partners. So yeah, we're training for the Panthers, not even just because they're
playing the Leafs, although that helps. Yes. So we got the PGA, you know, we got hockey,
probably my Knicks are gonna choke,
but come and watch that anyway.
And have some fun and have a great long weekend, everybody.
Beautiful, AJ, congrats again from all of us at the show.
We'll be by soon to enjoy some pizza and some beer.
Thanks for doing this, bud.
Yeah, you guys enjoy your weekend, take care.
Thank you too, thanks.
That's AJ from AJ's pizza on East Broadway two locations
Now three two five three two seven East Broadway go check them out go this weekend. Don't forget
Happy hour all day Sunday where you can sit and drink beer eat pizza and watch sports
Do we have admin? Oh and and he's working on that right now
We are gonna turn our attention to Major League Baseball now and an verk our Thursday
Regular has moved to Friday in the wake of all the Canucks news yesterday. We'll get into it now. Adnan Virk from MLB
Network, he joins us now on the Halford and Brough show on Sportsnet 650. Good
morning Adnan, how are you? I'm doing great Mike, doing great Jake.
Congratulations. Adam Flutt, Quinn Hughes will be happy, hopefully things work out
for the Canucks next season. Yeah, he had his introductory presser yesterday. He's
been a busy last 24 hours in Canuckland here. You had the coaching
hire, he had a big prize prospect signed in Tom V. Lander. You had Adam Foot
meeting with the media yesterday and then the president of hockey ops Jim
Rutherford was on the station yesterday as well. So yeah, lots of Canucks news
and thank you very much for taking the time to move to today to talk some
baseball because there are a variety of things I wanted to get into here. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to start
with. It was either going to be how terrible the Colorado Rockies are and if
you've ever seen anything like this or the shrunken strike zone which I was
reading about recently and how that's impacting Major League Baseball. So you
get to pick your own adventure here at and where do you want to start? You want
to start with the Rockies or the strike zone?
I've seen enough shrunken strike zones here in coaching little league, which offends me. So I like to call it big zone.
So I don't care what level of baseball it's at.
So let's start with the Rockies first. They're on page radio, Mike,
for 133 losses. Let that sink in. This is the worst baseball team you're ever
going to see. And we all just sit through the old three tigers who lost 119 119 and we all sit to the white sucks a year ago this team is an
absolute abomination I was working that Saturday night a week
a week ago now 21 to nothing they lost to get to San Diego Padres which is one away from the
record
for the largest ever shut out in the modern era going back to 1900 which
would have been 22 to nothing
and incredibly Bud Black gets to manage Sundayay when they lose this job so i can imagine that
the public side was and you want to go out like this twenty one nothing
and i try to get a win first let me get a win first boys then you can party okay
great
it was one of the longest in your banders and baseball overseen a lot of
horrible baseball there for a long time i within denver back in march fell is
there for the avalanche game which was awesome i had I get to watch Cal McCarver close and personal.
I always, it could shut up the locals at the local restaurants.
I was asking a few of the guys there at the bar, Hey,
Broncos are obviously number one who's number two. And they said, well,
the avalanche, I go, no, come on.
The nuggets won the NBA champions a couple of years ago.
Jamal Murray fell a Canadian,
Yockels is the best player on the planet. They love their avalanche, man.
McKinnon, McCar, kind of a tossing with them in the nuggets.
And I said, how far down are the Rockies?
And they said, you know,
it's actually a beautiful park to go to.
I said, I've never been to Coors.
I've been to 21 of 30 ballparks, never been to Coors.
It's a great ballpark,
but people only go for the opposing team.
Like, Rockies fans are just like an extinct thing now.
It's Rockies Cardinals.
So Cardinals fans who happen to live in Denver
go to the game, or people travel to St. Louis.
Like, it's incredible how far that franchise has fallen and um...
you know i i i was surprised to see that we do one of these shows and
that's a great prediction for rookie the year so i i panic issues of rookies
talk about
he's been terrible for the dodgers and now hurt by the chase dolander
who's the rockies top project is a picture
those you can ever pick a picture and court is actually
he should be really good if you're so once he goes to the Yankees or
the Mets.
Right now he's in Coors and it's a struggle for anybody.
No pitcher can pitch there.
Right now no hitter can hit there.
It's a horrible, horrible situation.
What's the worst stretch you've ever seen a team go through?
Because I always go back to little Jason in 1988 watching the Baltimore Orioles start.
Yeah.
Owen 21. And I remember Sports Illustrated showed up and the headline was just Owen 18,
the agony of the Orioles. And there was a picture of Billy Ripken on the bench just like looking
for Lauren.
I remember the Billy Ripken picture.
Yeah.
And by the way, I'm actually looking at it right now
in the top left corner, May 2nd, 1988,
Wayne Gretzky with the headline Edmonton Stuns Calgary.
Good old bowel of Alberta.
I get to work with Billy Ripken and Emily Network J.
He's a great guy, he's funny, he's crusty, he's cranky,
he's all the things you like in an old school ball player.
And he's told me those stories. He said it was just horrific because, crusties, crankies, all the things you like in an old school ball player. He's told me those stories.
He said it was just horrific because, you know, his dad,
I don't know if that was his family,
his dad was managing or Cal was on that team,
but it was like it was a family connection.
And it was incredibly painful.
And that's going to be the worst ever.
I'm looking at it now too.
This is incredible.
What a shot.
Eyes closed, the bat against the forehead.
What Billy told me is what was so rough about it
was that it was the start of the season. He said, you know, there's been 12 game losing streaks in the middle of the back against the forehead. What Billy told me is what was so rough about it was that it was the start of the season.
He said, you know, there's been 12 game losing streaks
in the middle of a year, there's been 15, 18.
But when you wait an entire off season,
and the whole cliche is hope springs eternal,
everything has a chance,
and you cannot win a game out of the gate,
because there's no worse feeling in baseball.
And he's like, I've struck out three times in the game,
I've made errors all over the place.
But when you can't buy wind out of the gate,
88 Orioles, all time worst.
I mean, I know that we laugh and we poke fun
and you know, there's some gallows humor,
but there's gotta be something at least serious
about running out one of the worst baseball teams
in the modern era.
And I don't like, this isn't all that new
because the Chicago White Sox last year, 41 and 1 in 21,
I think it was 41 and 1 in 21. That was like the fifth worst team in the modern era. There's got
to be some residual damage with the fan base of the market where you can be bad, but you can't be
horrifically bad. Where it's not even, I mean, borderline not even MLB baseball when you're
losing this badly with this regularity. Yeah, I completely agree with you. Honestly, Mike, it's one thing to go, well, you know,
teams are going to stink sometimes and they've tried to curb rules against tanking, which I
think is obviously helpful in this case. You can't just be awful and go get the number one pick,
but I'm with you. It's not good for the sport when a team is that atrocious. And it's been overall,
I think a pretty strong year for baseball. The Dodgers as advertised the best team in the national league despite the fact that a litany of injuries
they're starting pitching Kershaw's gonna come back but they've had 11
different pitchers on the IL. Mets are a first-place team Yankees are a
first-place team Tigers are a great story from a year ago continue their
success they're one of the best teams in the AL it looks like the Mariners close to
you guys could finally be a division champion so it's a good year for
baseball but I'm with you.
You can't have a team that's that bad.
Like in hockey, if you had all these successes in the team, they get seven wins.
Like that's like, how does that happen?
So I, I don't know what the answer is.
I'm sure Rob Manfred's like, you know, maybe politely calling Rockies
ownership center, like what's going on here?
Like you might as well assign a guy or make a move and do something.
And the Rockies, you know, the moves that they have made, guys, I mean, that Chris Bryant contract can go down
as well, at all times worse.
Seven years, 182 million dollars.
I remember when Chris Bryant, one rookie of the year,
won the World Series of the Cubs in 2016,
we thought for years he'd be a stud,
and he has been just putrid.
I mean, either he's hurt or when he plays,
he's incredibly ineffective.
It's one of the worst signings.
It's one of those that not a lot of people talk about, right?
We always talk about Anthony Rendon.
And for sure that's the worst contract
because it's more money and more years.
But that Chris Bryant, seven for $182
is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen.
So when the Rockies have spent, it's come up snake eyes.
We're speaking to Adnan Burke from MLB Network
here on the Haliford and Bruff Show on Sportsnet 650.
Okay, I do want to turn our attention
to the strike zone thing.
So I just want you to try and help me walk through this year.
I know it was a big article in the athletic Jason Stark and Ken Rosenthal were
the coauthors on it. So, uh, in the winter,
MLB negotiated what seemed like a pretty simple change in how a home plate
umpires are graded and evaluated with their strike zones.
But it seems as though it's had pretty far reaching implications.
And I think it was Justin Verlander who popped off the other day about what's going on. So what exactly is going on with strike zones, but it seems as though it's had pretty far reaching implications. And I think it was Justin Verlander who popped off the other day about what's
going on. So what exactly is going on with strike zones?
Have they really shrunk and why has there been such a significant blowback among
MLB pitchers?
Yeah, you know, I hadn't really noticed it, to be honest with you,
you're watching baseball. Like to me, there's been such an emphasis right now.
The league is clearly trying to get more offense in the game. I mean,
I watched that game last night with Jake Peeve and Carlos Pena.
Well the best games here. What happened? One nothing game.
DeGrom was vintage DeGrom eight strong innings and Hunter Brown was eight
innings of excellence as well.
He's a by the way grew up idolizing Justin Berlander and the Tigers,
pitched them the Astros. It's a big reason why it's such a great force teamers.
So even though they tried to get more offense in the game by making all these
rule adjustments and the pitch timer all the rest of it
it's still a pitcher sport like there's no doubt about it and
The overlanders point is that is that the newly implanted change basically just consistently, you know shrunk the entire zone and that report
They have thought they called it a buffer zone
So it's an area two inches around the strike zone that gave them leeway and how accurately they were able to judge strikes and balls
So it'll be basically decreased that leeway zone as you guys always know
It's not just on the plate always that pitches on the blackers and then even a little bit off the plate, right?
You certain umpires will say no I call a pitch just off the plate. It's close up of calling it a strike
So that's kind of the issue here is now they're saying, Oh, let's shrink it even tighter now.
And so according to that athletic article,
ball strike accuracy,
the highest ever been since that cast began tracking pitching in 2015.
So they're saying is, Hey, we're, we're calling it more accurately.
Or Berliners more frustrated because he's exactly what was,
we'll take the guy that throws one-on-one with a good breaking ball and have the
catcher set up right down the middle and throw as hard as you can and go two times through that line and then we're
on the next day that throws a hundred on the bullpen. That to me is not the game
of baseball that I know and love and I don't think that's the game the fans want.
So it's a fair point he's saying the strike zone has been shrunk but
ultimately you got to fire those pitches away and you know the pitchers are still
winning the game. JV I think knows that as well. What's it gonna be like for Juan
Soto tonight at Yankee Stadium? I can't wait. We were talking about it yesterday.
You know, he had one of the great one and done's ever. He's up there with Carmelo Anthony for a one and done.
What Mello did with Syracuse was similar to the Yankees. He went there one year, hit 41 home runs,
109 RBI, was outstanding in the playoffs, had a great friendship with Aaron Judge.
But then didn't respond to text messages apparently from Judge and his teammates probably Scott Boris telling them keep down keep your head down he goes
to match even though it was a very comparable offer to the Yankees so I'm
torn a little bit Jay I think he should get some cheers because again for one
season he was tremendous he helped lead them back to the World Series the first
time in 15 years but he went to a Crosstown rival maybe didn't handle it
that well it's gonna be booze I don't think it's vociferous booze.
Like I wouldn't say it's a smattering of applause,
but it's gonna be pretty bad.
I think you can hear it.
And one thing about Soto, which is great,
is he's got no problem playing the heel.
He's got no problem playing the villain.
Just imagine he hits a home run.
He might moonwalk around the bases.
Like he'll just, I hope he'll get at least one
or two Soto shuffles,
cause that would just be fun to see that dramatics
in that crowd.
It's gonna be, and here's the thing, there's two first place teams, man. The Yankees are rolling. So it's not two Soto shuffles, because that would just be fun to see that dramatics in that crowd. It's going to be, and here's the thing,
there's two first place teams, man.
Next in the anchors are rolling.
So it's not just Soto,
it's you're going to deal with Lindor and Alonso.
And judges numbers are out of this world.
Like I was telling people in the area,
I said, we're all focused in the Knicks here, understandably,
but I said Aaron Judge's modern day Barry Bonds,
flirting with 400 and still has the most home runs
in baseball, like it's going to be a great, great series.
I can't wait for the subway series.
Um, what is it?
Do you, do you think of Johnny Damon when you think
about the player that left a team to go to a rival?
Is that the first name that comes up or is there another one?
Uh, Wade Boggs is the one that we think of just
because it was so absurd.
He was one of the great Red Sox ever.
And then I just picture him riding a horse at the Yankee Stadium in 1996
was just one of the most jarring clownish images I've ever seen in my life.
And then of course he got his 3,000th bit while with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Like it was just the stupidest thing ever.
I'm not saying every guy has to finish his start his career like he's staying usual
but Wade Boggs going from Red Sox to Yankees and people are shouting to him like,
F you and the horse you rode in on and there he is riding a horse.
It was so absurd to me.
Adnan, before we let you go, I do have a movie query.
Actually, there's two sports movies that I'm really interested in.
One is the John Madden movie.
We talked about it earlier in the week.
The principal photography just came out with Nick Cage as John Madden
and Christian Bale as Al Davis, which I think is hilarious. But there's a movie coming out in October.
I've seen the trailer. I'm just curious to get your thoughts.
Have you seen the trailer and what your anticipation level is?
It's Dwayne the Rock Johnson as Mark Kerr, the you,
the former UFC star and the smashing machine.
I watched the trailer about six times. I don't know if you've seen it,
but he is unrecognizable that I guess he's wearing like a full facial don't know if you've seen it, but he is unrecognizable.
I guess he's wearing like a full facial prosthetic.
So you can't even, you can kind of tell that it's the rock
and you know it's the rock,
but he doesn't look anything like the rock.
He looks a lot like Mark Kerr.
I'm just curious if you have anything on this one for us.
Well, what I always find fascinating
is kind of what you touched on Mike
is whenever actors try to really just go undercover
and just completely be unrecognizable.
It's one of my favorite things, right?
When an actor truly metamorphosizes.
So to your point with Madden, I thought it was a joke.
We heard that Nick Cage is playing John Madden.
Like it looks nothing like John Madden, zero.
Like Nick Cage is in good shape.
He's got certain features like John Madden is overly, you know, he was a hefty guy.
Like I just don't see it.
I saw that picture and again, I still kind of find it funny
I don't know if I'm buying it but going back to your point of Metamorphosis who's great at doing that as Christian Bale
He looks unbelievable as Al Davis. I said, oh my god. I cannot wait for this movie
I don't know if Nick Cage will pull up that and it might just be silly and you know a bunch of caricatures
But I do think that Christian Bale is gonna be an unbelievable Al Davis
So I'm frothing about that. I love to obviously as advice and that Dick Cheney movie.
But with regards to the rock, he's trying to make a turn here
like being a serious actor. There's still rumors.
He's going to try to hook up with Scorsese for this.
A legend gangster. He said in Hawaii, I will see if that ends up happening.
There's about five Scorsese projects that keep being announced,
which one actually gets funding remains to be seen.
But listen, I think with the USC, it's really ripe for good content.
I remember the first UFC movie was Red Belt. David Bammett's way back in 2008. something remains to be seen. But listen, I think with USC, it's really ripe for good content.
I remember the first UFC movie was Red Belt.
David Bammet's way back in 2008,
she would tell us, you know,
for a kind of came and went,
but that was just as, as UFC was rising.
And I think, you know, it's,
people realize it's ripe fodder.
The Iron Claw I thought was a fantastic movie.
Again, actor's not necessarily known for being,
you know, critically acclaimed,
like Zac Efron in the lead there,
but that was a legit great movie.
And hopefully the rocket emulated that with this film coming out in October.
That was about the Vaughn Eric brothers.
So, yeah, that was so sad.
That was that was a devastating watch.
They should.
They should. When they released the trailers, like,
as I knew about the Vaughn Eric brothers, because I used to really be into wrestling.
This trailer is not giving a good idea of what happens in this movie.
Like, it's way more depressing and way darker than the trailer ever let on.
False advertising from the Iron Claw.
It's almost it's almost like there's some darkness behind the scenes in wrestling.
Yeah, just a little bit. Just a little bit.
It's like some of those guys are not as happy as they look.
No, I love the wrestler, too.
Speaking of great wrestler was not the depressing moves as well.
The wrestler, the soundtrack soundtrack the soundtrack was hair metal
It was awesome
This is elastic my reverse of tomato's 90s sucked Mickey workers 90 suck they love the 80s hair metal
Thanks for taking the time to do it today and moving Friday we appreciate it enjoy the subway series should be a lot of fun
Yeah, I can't wait. Thanks Mike. Thanks. They Take care boys. Have a great weekend. You too. Thanks
That's at Nanberg for my Mubli network here on the Haliford and brush on sportsnet 650
I encourage everyone to go watch that trailer by the way. It's bizarre. It's actually bizarre how different the rock looks
Yeah, it's not a surprise to it's not me. Wow, that's a transformation. They just finally gonna get his Oscar
Maybe I don't know for the smashing machine, but maybe but you know what?
so what they've done is like I it's got to be a prosthetic because
His face is realigned like, you know the the curves and jawline. I think most people have like it that's completely altered
Yeah, it's it's jarring to watch it really is
So Rick talk it is a few minutes away from
getting introduced in Philly.
Do we have, do we have interest in what he's
going to say there?
Yeah, a little bit.
I think he's going to be asked about why he
decided to leave the Canucks.
I think someone's going to ask it because
that's how he became available to join the
Philadelphia Flyers.
So what are the questions he's going to be
asking?
He's going to be asked about what happened
between Miller and Pedersen.
I guarantee he'll be asked about that.
Yes.
He'll probably talk his way around that.
But I think the big question that I think a lot
of people in Philly are worried about is what's
his relationship going to be like with Mitch
Goff and how is he going to coach?
Do you think he's going to hang his hat on the
development of Quinn Hughes?
Um, that's a good question.
Cause I think there's a lot of people in
Philly that are worried that, um, he's going
to quote unquote ruin Mitch Goff.
Sure.
Which I think is ridiculous, but a lot of
people in Vancouver don't.
And I think that conversation has carried
over from Vancouver into Philly.
I'll also be very curious to hear him address
what the expectations are going to be for this season.
Yeah, that's a good one for sure.
Because that's been one of the sort of
undercurrents to this entire thing is that
hiring Rick Taukett is about a new era in
Philadelphia, but this existing era, they've
been bad for a while.
They haven't been to the playoffs in five
years and as Jordan Hall, who went on the show yesterday, astutely pointed out, because the last time they made
the playoffs was in the bubble. They haven't had a home playoff game in Philadelphia since
2018. Seven years for a proud franchise and organization. They want to be good and they
want to be good now. They don't really want to wait. When were we in Philly to see the
Flyers game? 2019. It was disappointing.
It was.
Canucks didn't help.
No, but the, I was disappointed in the atmosphere at the Flyers game.
Yeah.
It wasn't great.
I always remember, I always remember Flyers games.
You know, you'd have so much energy in that building and then they crank like
welcome to the jungle in there and you could feel the crowd like just getting
like fired up.
The building was juiceless.
I repeat, juiceless.
Yeah.
And we went there and it was a weekday against the Canucks and you know, the Canucks weren't
exactly the biggest draw.
They weren't the best team.
But I remember being there and I'm like, this place is so sleepy.
The only thing, I was just like, all right, I want to go see Gritty because Gritty was
pretty hot at the time.
He was so hot. And he had like a security detail around him. I was like, I can just like, all right, I want to go see Gritty. Cause Gritty was pretty hot at the time. He was so hot.
And he had like a security detail around him.
I was like, I can't talk to him.
Well, he's not supposed to talk to me anyway, but it was.
The security detail also mascots, like other Gritty's.
It would be amazing.
That would be funny.
Yeah.
But that was a highlight of the game.
They honked their horn.
I also don't even remember who won.
I don't remember anything about the game.
I remember sitting there and going like, wow, I feel it would be better.
It is now for one to watch brought to you by Delaney's. Okay. Tired.
Tonight's one to watch Mitch Marner.
Could this be the last game that Marner ever plays in a Toronto Maple Leafs
uniform after nine years and over 700 games played in the regular season and the
playoffs Marner's six year,
$65 million deal is set to expire this summer.
Here's what Chris Johnson,
the athletic had to say about Marner's future in Toronto.
There is absolutely zero reason to believe that Marner will be signing another
contract in Toronto on or before July one,
not after refusing to negotiate an in-season extension with the Leafs or even
considering a request for management to waive his no movement clause at the trade deadline. Everything is lining
up for Mitch Marner to walk free. Marner has not been good in this series, although he
has four points in five games. All of them came in the first three games of the series.
He has just a single solitary goal against the Florida Panthers in this series and just
two in 11 games during this entire playoff run, which could be coming to an end tonight.

You know, actors get stereotyped. Yes.
I'm getting feeling I'm getting stereotyped because you know, ask me anything.
You guys always, it's always about food, right? You're good at answering them. Yeah, but I'm getting feeling I'm getting stereotyped because you know ask me anything you guys always it's always about food, right?
You're good at answering them. Yeah, but I'm
Multifaceted I can talk about travel I can talk about
Food I can talk about travel
Little bit of travel a little bit food travel over traveling for food. There you go. Yeah, are you up in Kamloops?
Yes, I am. How's it going?
Yesterday? I good actually kind of a crazy 24 hours. I, um,
I gotta tell you a little bit of a funny story. So where Kamloops,
I think it was what I guess when the news broke,
the talk it got hired and that Adam foot got fired or hired, I should say.
And Rob Ralph was standing with myself and Julia Caravata. Rob Ralph's the,
now the assistant gym of the lions. He's the Canadian director,
he was the Canadian director of scouting.
Or probably the director of Canadian scouting.
And Rob goes, yeah, he goes, you know,
it's kind of funny he goes, I was flying out of London
and then from London to Toronto,
or to London to Toronto and to Toronto, Vancouver,
I don't know what was wrong with both of my flights.
He's going to look at them and go, really, on Monday?
He goes, yeah, he goes, I didn't really think anything of it.
I thought it was kind of odd considering the circumstances, what's going on in London.
But he had a little bit of a scoop that he didn't know was a scoop until
everything kind of went down.
So good scout, yes.
Scoop reporter, no.
Why did the Canucks choose Adam Foote over any of the other
candidates, including Manny Malholtra?
Well, I think number one, there is a familiarity there.
There's stability.
You're bringing back somebody that's been with
the organization for two and a half years,
knows the dynamics of the room, has a very good read on the personnel,
probably what makes a lot of these players tick.
So you've jumpstarted that process by bringing back Adam Foote.
I also think guys, it's something that we
talked about earlier and I think it's something that even Jim Rutherford addressed at one of his
conference press conferences was the fact that this leadership group needs to improve. They need
to get a stronger leadership group. And you know, when Rutherford talked about leaders during that
press conference, he said, doesn't have to be a guy who's been a coach for a while in the league,
but we look back at it as what did he do as a player
as well, and obviously Adam Foote ticks that box.
I mean, outstanding leader in his day and assistant
captain with the Stanley Cup champion, Colorado Avalanche.
So I think that's another thing that played in his
favor, just the fact that here's a guy who is
probably going to try to mold that leadership group moving forward.
He was the captain of the Blue Jackets and
eventually I think the captain of the Colorado
Avalanche just for a bit, right at the end of his
career, could be wrong on that, but Halford.
You're probably right.
I mean, I just remember like during the
heyday of the avalanche, Sackett was the captain
and Foote was the alternate.
I think Foote might've replaced Sackett
when he retired.
Um, so let's talk a bit about Manny Malhotra.
Um, have you heard whether or not he was
disappointed in the decision?
Uh, and, uh, have you heard, um, anything about
his future within the organization?
Oh, I haven't heard anything in that regard,
but I think it's a, it's going to be a real tell with
Mel Hoetra. And there's a lot of people that are down on the foot signing, you know, the
higher in the foot, I should say. And, you know, this is the way I kind of see it playing
out if I'm from a Connect management perspective. I think you go with foot now because again,
it's stability, it's continuity from you know from Rick Taka
he was a guy on his staff and you know you give foot I mean they gave him a three year
contract you maybe give him a couple years now if things go sideways and this team needs
to undergo a rebuild right you have to trade Quinn Hughes you you know you move on from
you know certain players I mean if it goes sideways and they have to do a rebuild maybe Manny Malhotra is a guy to come in
then he's got another year or two of coaching under his belt at the American
Hockey League level and then he's really ready to go probably coached a lot of
the players that will be involved in the rebuild obviously through his time at
Abbotsford so to me it's gonna be a real tell to see what happens with Manny Malhotra moving forward.
Now, clearly they could risk losing him to another team if something pops up that,
you know, he, he deems to be better for his, uh, for his career.
But I think it's going to be really interesting to see what happens
with Manny Malhotra as well.
Does he stay within the organization?
Who knows if he does, maybe he's the guy that succeeds foot down the road.
Uh, let's talk a bit about Tauket because I'm sure you've been in touch with the now former
head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
He's been introduced, he's being introduced in Philly as we speak.
Why do you think he chose Philly?
Because there were teams like Boston and teams like Seattle that were also interested in
Rick Tauket.
Well, from what I was told, the biggest thing
is stability and the fact that they have a plan.
That was probably the biggest thing is that the
Philadelphia Flyers sold Rick Tocket on a plan
moving forward.
Yeah, it's going to be tough for a couple of years,
but they've got cap space moving forward.
They believe they can reshape that club with
that cap space.
And you know, he just feels, I think, you know,
in talking to him, the biggest thing was the fact
that they just had a plan and that they really sold them
on the plan that they had and they have stability
in management.
I think that's one of the things that might have been
a concern with Boston is that, you know, Sweeney's on,
I think he expires in maybe a year or two,
who knows, maybe he's gone.
And if he's gone, right, what happens to the head coach
at that time, right?
So I know Seattle came extremely hard.
I know we talked about that last week.
Um, I hope he would have been a big fan of, you
know, telling everybody he needed to go back
east because of his family and then taking a gig
two hours down the road.
Um, but yeah, so it kind of, when it was all
said and done, it was Philadelphia.
And when we talk a lot about the future of
Queen Hughes in Vancouver, and rightly so, maybe we should a lot about the future of Queen Hughes in Vancouver, and rightly so,
maybe we should talk more about the future
of this management group.
If Rick Tocket is wondering about the future
of this management group.
Well, I think that was the case in Boston.
I don't know about Vancouver, but you ask
yourself this question.
Do you think Jim Rutherford is up for a
rebuild, right?
I don't know.
I mean, I don't know if he wants to stick around for another four or five years to go
through a rebuild process or three or four years or whatever. Right? So, um,
to me that's,
that's a question moving forward as well as what happens with the management
group moving forward if this team decides to go through a rebuild.
We're speaking to Bob the Mo,
Jemar Johnovic here on the Haliford and Bref show on Sportsnet 650.
Here's a presentation of the Clayton Public House.
Let's turn our attention to Lions Training Camp Moge.
You're up in cammoves for it.
We spoke with Buck Pierce earlier in the week,
just before they were about to hit the field for practice.
He sounded excited about getting going,
especially on the offensive side of things,
getting to work with Nathan Rorick on the field for camp.
How much excitement is there around the offensive side of the football right now?
First off disclaimer, it's training camp, right? Everything's, you know roses and chocolates and training camp. But given that
this offense is super excited. I talked to Keon Hatcher and a couple of the other players and they're just jacked with what Buck Pierce is
doing on offense and
some of the changes that you're going see with this offense, and of course,
if you've watched Winnipeg's offense
the last couple of years, you've known what they've done.
But under Jordan McSimmick,
the previous offensive coordinator,
this was really a north-south offense.
There wasn't really that much east-west to it.
There wasn't that much misdirection to it.
I've watched them plays and practice,
and I'm going, I remember just turning over
to Julio Carabin and going, I like this, right?
A lot of misdirection a lot of East West they
ran probably more hit screens in just a drill than probably I've seen the last
two years and they weren't focusing on catching the footballs just the
receivers what they were focusing on blocking right and that's the big thing
about making that play successful so you're gonna see a lot more East West
you're gonna see a lot more misdirection and the players are stoked those funny key on hatcher. I walked up to my sit
So I said hey ago, what do you think of the offense?
He looked at me goes man fire right and you know that I told buck Pierce that you know
How excited some of the players were and I just kind of laughed he goes we haven't even put anything in yet
So there's a lot of optimism surrounding the offense and Nathan Rourke
So when we talked to him, there was a fair bit of coach because you would expect there's like the first day of training camp
But he made it like without prompting very clear
Like I want to run the football we want to run the football
And I'm just curious because I know I mean that was obviously what they did in Winnipeg with Brady Olivera a lot now
I don't know if he has the same personnel here, but you know early days at training camp
Did you get a sense of that as well? Yeah, and you know know, that's, that's his, uh, that's his game plan. He loves to run the
football. I mean, James Butler's look good in camp. Of course, the veteran brought back
from Hamilton. Um, Jordan Terrell is a second year guy. He's, and here's the thing, guys,
it's kind of weird. There, there hasn't, there's been a couple of guys that have kind of really
flashed and maybe stood out at a rookies, but the one thing that's surprised me in just
about every position is the amount of depth that they have like there's guys
making plays and you know they're just kind of taking turns making plays but
you know the running back position Jason Hudley's pushing for a spot guy named
Xander Horvath is looking at time so it's gonna be interesting to see how
this shakes down at the running back position. Moge besides good blocking what
else does a team need to be successful in these East-West
plays?
Well, the thing is with football, it's about progression, right?
And what I mean by that is when you have a series of plays or a formation off a series
of plays, you have options running the very same play.
Let me just give you an example. I mean in RPO, right? You have the option of handing
the ball off, you have the option of the quarterback rolling out and running the ball, you have
the option of the quarterback then throwing the football. It's what we call progression,
right? And that's what Buck Pierce has in a lot of his plays. And I'll give you an example.
If you run a jet sweep with Buck Pierce,
okay, you're running a jet sweep.
Now you're running the same motion
except you're not running jet sweep.
Now you're gonna hit that very same receiver
crossing the formation in the flat.
So when you're talking about East-West plays,
you're talking about progression
in terms of what you're doing on offense,
that's some of the things you look for.
And that's what has a lot of these players
excited with this offense.
Jordan McSimmons offense are a little bit more static.
Right?
This offense is going to create doubt on the
defensive side of the ball with the misdirection
that they run and with the motion that they run.
Moj, we got a first time texter with a food
question for you.
I don't know if we've talked about dim sum before, but it is a dim sum question. Oh yeah, oh yeah.
He says, first time texting in, I love listening
to Moja's food takes.
What is his favorite dim sum, both place and item?
So you got to pick a place and something
off the dim sum menu.

Thanks for doing this today.
As always, enjoy.
How much longer are you up in Kamloops for?
I'm up here basically till the end of the month.
Oh wow.
Okay. Right on.
I'll be up here for a while.
Okay, well when we do this next Friday,
we'll be going back to Kamloops.
Thanks for doing this, man.
We appreciate it.
No worries, guys.
See you, buddy.
Yep, Bob the Moj Marjanovic here
on the Haliford and Bruff Show on Sportsnet 650.
We need a Dim Sum sponsorship.
I'll be honest with you, and I always say this,
never been to Dim Sum.
Yeah, that's right, you did say that.
Crazy, and that place is like, I know it.
Yeah, oh dude, it's so good.
I walk Pedro by every day, he's like,
can we go in for some Dim Sum?
That very, there's a very popular chain
that was prominent in the US, Din Tai Fung,
they opened up one on Albany. It's, yeah, it's kinda like, yeah, in the US, Din Tai Fung. They opened up one on al-Bernie.
It's yeah, it's kind of like yeah. Yeah, that's my neighbor. It's like it's like the first
I want to say first one in BC. I'm almost possible that I think it might be the first Canadian one. It's great
It's affordable you get a ton of food lot of variety
Oh, it's so good best hangover meal on the planet. Hey dog best hangover cure meal on the planet. I owe you you do
Let's go for dim sum.
That's the cheapest possible place I could take him.
No, that's a great one.
We'll go to a good one.
Yeah, good idea.
It is a great idea.
I thought that was very thoughtful.
I was just making fun.
No, it is a very good idea,
and I will never say no to free dim sum,
because it's delicious.
Thoughtful would have been pouning up on the bed
a year ago, but still.
What was the bet anyway?
Was I, I said that the Canucks would be gone in four or five games to the Oilers and you
you took everything else, right?
Yeah, I said either the Oilers win in six or seven or the Canucks win.
Okay.
Something like that.
Right.
Yeah.
It was a good bet.
It was.
I believed in the team.
Well, I mean, I didn't think they would win necessarily, but I believe that they could
pass four games. Laddie, Laddie's Laddie here. There he is. I don't think they would win necessarily, but I believe that they could pass four games.
Laddie, Laddie's Laddie here, there he is.
I don't know what he's doing over there.
I never know what he's doing over there.
Is he eating an Uncrustable, I don't know.
No, I'm all out.
So side note here, Laddie has discovered
the magic of the Uncrustable.
Oh, they're so good.
For those of you that don't know.
One of the great snacks.
For those of you that don't know what this is,
either you don't have children
or you're not a 39 year old child like Andy.
Sorry, 40 year old child like Andy. Sorry, 40-year-old child like Andy.
Actually 41 now.
41.
An Uncrustable is a packaged, ready-made
peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread.
And as the name suggests, crust is already off, right?
They basically took a circle
and cut out the middle of the sandwich.
But they crimped the sides to make sure that it's closed.
And you are obsessed with uncrustables
Are you not obsessed? Yeah, come on. Just how many per day just one?
I have one in this just one day. I bring one into the studio and have it have you tried
You think your 20 in like an hour they stay in your freezer to stay fresh
So you gotta give him about an hour to kind of thaw out so I keep in my bag when I get here
And have you tried to toast one yet? No, that's the next level anyway. We got 32 thoughts
I just put a couple in the toaster?
Yeah, in the slot.
I haven't even thought about that.
I like them a little bit cold actually.
You could do that too?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You can do anything you want.
Like almost frozen.
Okay, let's get to the 32 thoughts on you.
Well, this is the funny part is my daughter eats them
and then she still leaves a crust.
Even though they're uncrustable.
She'll eat around the edge of it
and just leave the little crimped edge.
Much respect.
I need to have some kind of crust on here to leave behind thirty two thoughts audio. Okay, yeah. What do we got?
I'm talking about uncrustables
Here's Frege and Kyle both love uncrustable
He just talked about reasons why Friedman thinks the Canucks went with foot and reasons wife
Friedman personally thinks foot could do a good job for the Vancouver Canucks. Let's hear it reasons. I think that
He can make this work. Number one, one of the very few good things about the Canucks last year was their penalty
kill, which he was in charge of.
Number two, another strong area of the team last year was their defense, especially as
they strengthened it, and he is responsible
for that position.
You know, it's interesting how they took pains to point out that they didn't consult Quinn
Hughes through this.
Okay, but it's not like they weren't aware of how Hughes feels about Adam Foote.
Yeah, maybe they tried, he just didn't pick up.
That's right, he was too busy watching the Knicks.
They know how he feels about Adam Foote and they know how those defensemen feel about
Adam Foote.
And from what I understand, one of the things the Canucks had indicated to a couple of the candidates they
didn't hire was that it was such a hard and difficult season this past year that they
felt that someone the players knew, liked, and were comfortable with gave him a big edge.
They have to settle down their players, they have to quell the
noise, move past all of the distractions of last season and they felt that if one
of the distractions you worry about is how the players are going to adjust to
the personality of a new coach, that should not be an issue here and I
believe that really did appeal to Vancouver.
I guess the other takeaway from yesterday
that we didn't really mention off the top
is that Foot did speak at length about the relationships
that he had forged with players already
and how important those relationships were.
Sat came on the show yesterday and talked about this as well.
Now, Sat brought up the good point
is that up until this point,
Foot's probably been cast as the good cop
And when you get dumped on by the bad cop and he runs you through the ringer in the interrogation room
You need a good cop to throw an arm around you and bring you a Pepsi and be like everything's gonna be okay
It's gonna be all right. That was foot. Yeah. Now he's gonna be tasked with you know, being the bad cop and
One a Pepsi go get it yourself, right and you kick him in the shins.
You're not allowed to do that.
I can do anything I want.
Okay, I'm going off topic here, but the point remains,
it's a different role entirely.
I don't know how much that affects the relationships.
Because it will inevitably, right?
Guys, ice time gets decreased.
You look at the head coach.
He uses it, what happened to you?
I thought I knew you footer zip
footer footy or is it what he I think what he foot I don't think it's that
Do not call me footsie sorry footsie you want to know how to ruin the player-coach relationship call him that I don't know
How much it's gonna change?
I know it will change because as I made for the reasons that I outline, but he made a
point of saying like he's, he's been on the job for a couple of years.
He's built up good relationships with the players.
And as Fried suggested in the clip, he's going to need to lean on that because
this is a team that's looking to move forward and strengthen the relationships
they already have and, you know, ignore the relationships that were frayed and
fractured and broke the room apart last year.
Well, foot even mentioned that he's had lots of conversations
with Quinn Hughes, and now I'm going
to have to have harder conversations with Quinn Hughes.
So that's interesting.
And I think I know what those conversations are going to be.
Don't try and do everything.
You're doing too much.
Don't try and do everything.
Well, I think there are also conversations
about the team as a whole.
They won't necessarily just be about Quinn Hughes' game.
No. Because most of the time, if Adam Foote is talking to Quinn Hughes in the past,
it will be about the defense and what he's doing.
You're doing a great job.
And now he's going to be like, Quinn, like, take me with you.
No, I'm just kidding.
Go to New Jersey together.
No, it's just going. Go to New Jersey together. No, it's just gonna be different, I think. Well, Tauke did, Tauke walked that walk last year with Hughes.
I mean, there were, I don't wanna say numerous times,
but there were enough instances of him saying,
like, he's doing too much.
Yeah, yeah.
He's trying to do it all, and he's trying to do everything.
He was, he was.
And I'm pretty sure that Tauke and Foote,
both discussed that.
Foote being in charge of the defense probably saw it as much as anybody.
There will have to be that notion of, we know you're the captain and our best player and
our most dynamic skater, but we can't rely on you to do everything.
Otherwise, you're going to have to do it.
And then his reply was like, what other guys?
Who else?
Will they start doing it soon?
Or I'm playing forward?
Rick Dollywell is gonna join us next.
Always an interesting part of the Halford & Brough week
when Dolly joins us on a Friday.
You'll wanna stick around for this.
It's usually a gong show.
You're listening to the Halford & Brough show
