["Fiesta Friday Theme Song"]
701 on a Friday! I forgot it was Fiesta Friday.
Doesn't feel like a Fiesta Friday.
Why would you say that?
You know that Simpsons scene where they're doing like the Hello Pussycat or whatever
and they're all wearing the funny hats and the guy's stroking the shotgun and clearly being motivated by the music?
It's kind of where I'm at right now.
I don't have a shotgun, but it's kind of where I'm at.
It's been a real Fiesta here on the Haliford and Brough Show.
First hour, if you want to download the podcast. It's kind of where I'm at. It's been a real fiesta here on the Haliford and Ruff show.
First hour, if you want to download the podcast.
Just good vibes all around.
Happy times.
I think some people are getting upset
that Ruff didn't yell enough.
They were expecting more yelling.
He's too confused to yell.
I know.
I know.
What am I going to yell at?
It's one of the strength force.
Who do you yell at?
What do I yell at?
I don't know, the ceiling?
I've been, I feel like I've been yelling for, I'm yelled out.
Yeah, I feel you.
You know?
I feel you.
I don't even talk about Pedersen anymore.
Honestly, I don't.
Yeah.
It's just kind of like a constant.
Yeah.
Another pointless night.
Perfect.
Great.
Well, it's Fiesta Friday on the Haliford and Brough show.

Our next guest is being tasked with raising the spirits
of the show, of the fan base of
the entire lower mainland no pressure AJ from AJ's Pizza on East Broadway joins
us now on the Haliford and Brev show on Sportsnet 650 what up AJ? What is going
on? I know I listen my my heart is bleeding for you guys but I'm
promise you I'm gonna make it way better. Okay. I promise. I don't know if I can make the Canucks better.
No.
But let's start with one what I learned.
Okay.
In the last week.
Okay.
So what I learned and you know I text you both on Friday,
your reach, even sometimes if it's somber,
goes down to Florida.
We mentioned this yesterday,
but I want you to reiterate it
for those that might not have
heard it.
Please.
So I walk into after I did the show last Friday, I'm in AJ's winter garden and some guy says,
Hey, are you AJ?
Obviously sitting at the bar at 1110 drinking an IPA.
Good for him.
And I was like, I am.
He's like, I just heard you on the hell bro show.
I said, stop it. There's Bro show. I said, stop it.
There's no way.
I said, come on.
You don't even, Hal, why?
What he's like, I am one of the biggest fans of that show.
He said, I used to live in Vancouver.
I'm down here now.
I couldn't believe you were opening here.
I was like, this is surreal.
Come on.
When we heard this anecdote,
at first we thought you were lying
We're like there's no way that our region extended all the way down to can ask the country, but alas it has
And it's a great thing. It's a great vibe. But okay, I want to ask you
How is the experience in Florida with the new?
So for those that don't know AJ's open up a second location in Florida Winter Garden. How was it? It was great
It was it was it was awesome. They're killing it. They're rocking it people love it
And I think that guy's name is Dan and he's probably gonna be mad right now because it's probably not Dan
I just met so many people but yeah, no, it was awesome. It was amazing
Shout out to shout out to maybe Dan if that's your name
Yeah, yeah go with the ask us anything can I do with ask us anything let's do it
Because I just read this article. Do you guys love pineapple on pizza or no?
I do.
I'm an apple on pizza guy.
I like a Hawaiian pizza.
Yeah.
You do.
Yeah.
I mean, because it was made in Canada.
Yes.
That's correct.
And then there's a place in London that's so offended about it that they're charging
a hundred dollars if you want to put it on.
London, England?
Yes.
So one of my favorite pies at AJ's is the Tropical Reeves, which
is your spin on a Hawaiian pizza. It's great. I am with you guys. I am with you guys. And
hey, listen, the sun is going to come up, but I do have one last thing. It's a Jimmy
Asus. Let's go. He says take the commanders. It's a lock. Oh my God. Are you kidding me?
Let's go. Okay.
He says take the commanders into lock.
Oh my God.
Are you kidding me?
I'm just, I'm just, I'm telling you.
Okay.
You know what?
Hold on.
I want to, I've been thinking about this.
What's his reasoning?
I feel like Jimmy Aces is like.
He doesn't really have a lot of reasoning, so that's sometimes why I got to go with him.
Okay.
You know what?
I'm glad you brought us up.
It's like the scene from Casino is like, Crooked zebras.
Yeah.
Right.
I have, one, the refs, no.
Last year.
Crooked zebras in old schools.
That is for good.
So last year, when the Bucks took on the Lions,
I remember I had like everything riding on it
because I was always so anti-Bucks and everything.
The Bucks kind of kept throwing shots at the Lions and just kept going toe to toe with them. And everyone expected the
Lions to cakewalk that game and the dog walk the bucks and they didn't do it.
I think I got with Jimmy Aces on this. I don't think the commanders are going to do it, but
we've said this before, like of all the teams that are left, it feels like they're the ones
that are playing with house money the most, like they're not supposed to be here. They're
ahead of schedule. And it's like, if there's one guy that could go in and
maybe just play carefree and do whatever it could be Jayden Daniels so I got time
for Jimmy Aces here yeah I don't know if Jimmy Aces analysis does as much as you
just did how free but he could be right oh man AJ we needed this bud this is
really light in the mood thank you as always for doing this we appreciate it
have a good weekend remind it forever to go by ages this weekend eat pizza drink beer and watch sports
Yeah, sounds great guys. Sounds great. Enjoy it. Try and enjoy the weekend. Yeah, we'll try. Thanks, buddy
Hey, that's AJ from AJ's pizza on East Broadway a reminder
It is the best pizza place in the world, but now there's two of them
So now there's two best pizza places in the world one here and one in Florida we are working on trying to get Jason
Greger out of Edmonton on the show because of course the Canucks despite
how doom and gloom it's been they still have another game on the horizon it's
tomorrow 7 o'clock Rogers Arena against the Edmonton Oilers that is also the
last and final game of hockey day slash night in Canada huge celebration on
sports night of the game across the country. There's games
all day starting in the afternoon, going all the way through to the evening. So as you pointed out
earlier in the show, the Canucks are going to come in with a massive spotlight on them because the
entire country will have been watching hockey all day leading up to Connor McDavid and the
Edmonton Oilers against the Canucks in the ultimate and final game of the night.
The red hot Oilers.
Yeah, they are on fire.
Let's do some Ask Us Anythings.
Let's do it.
Craig and Pemberton, Ask Us Anything, with the
upcoming Four Nations Cup, is there any player,
past or present, whose name you would refuse to
wear as a fan on a Team Canada jersey?
Mine would be Marshawn or Pronger.
Inversely, is there a player who plays or played
for an NHL team you hate, but
you would wear their name on a team Canada Jersey.
Mine would be Aguindla.
Yeah, it's funny.
Aguindla was always respected.
And I don't think there was anyone, even a
Canucks fan that hated the flames that really,
really had a hate for
Jerome McGinley.
I would probably consider wearing a Patrice
Bergeron Canada jersey.
All right.
I get it.
I would consider it.
I don't like it.
You, I probably would, I like, I wouldn't go out
and buy one because I'd be like, there's probably
other names that I could put on this jersey.
Yeah.
But I respected Patrice Bergeron.
Although he did deliver the daggers in game seven
against the Canucks.
Um, I always, I always liked the Gindla.
Always liked the Gindla.
Yeah.
Um, I wouldn't, I wouldn't have had a problem
without it.
Marshawn is a very interesting litmus test.
Well, I would never wear a Marshawn.
I'd never wear a Marshawn.
Everyone knows my personal rules on this, right? Well, you take your wear a Marshawn. I'd never wear a Marshawn. No, I'm not checking.
Everyone knows my personal rules on this, right?
Well, you take your stupid personal rules out of this.
They're not stupid.
They're totally stupid.
I wouldn't want to wear a Marshawn jersey around
Vancouver just because people would be like,
oh, you're a big Marshawn fan.
I wouldn't wear the jersey, but it does bring up
the conversation of if he is a, and you know what?
Let's even punt past the four nations, because I
think everyone's focused on the Olympics. Like if Marshawn is a, and you know what, let's even punt past the four nations, cause I think everyone's
focused on the Olympics.
Like if Marshawn is a driving factor in force
for Canada in the Olympics, and it's a really
heated competition, you're leaning on him.
Well, I'm gonna be cheering for him.
It's tough.
I'm not, not really, no, no.
What about Ray Bork?
What about Ray Bork?
Would you wear a Bork Canada jersey?
That'd be okay with you?
Yeah.
Ray Bork.
Yeah, Ray Bork.
We'd play for the Bruins, obviously.
Yeah, but that version of the Bruins didn't do it. Yeah, I'd be okay with that? Yeah. Ray Bork. Yeah, Ray Bork. Well, we'd play for the Bruins, obviously.
But that version of the Bruins didn't do anything.
Yeah, I'd be okay with that.
So that changes things.
I wouldn't even have that big an issue with Pronger.
I loved Pronger.
Yeah, I liked Pronger too. Pronger was awesome.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Other people recoiled against his dirty play.
I embraced it.
I thought it was great.
Yeah. The stomping Kessler was a bit much.
Yeah, sometimes he got a little kicky.
Yeah. But it was Kessler.
I think I'm more annoyed by Pronger.
I'm more annoyed by Pronger now
than I was during his career
with all the commercials that he's done.
Oh, wow, great one from Brandon of Vancouver.
Duncan Keith.
That would be tough.
I couldn't, you couldn't wear one.
There's no way.
You couldn't wear one, however.
I respect the hell out of Duncan Keith.
He was a terrific player. I watched Duncan Keith win a Stanley Cup, now not the entire playoffs, but the final
especially.
When they beat Tampa Bay in that Stanley Cup final in 2015, that was Duncan Keith won the
Stanley Cup final.
Well, it won it against Anaheim too.
He was incredible.
I think he should have had two cons by trophies.
Maybe three.
No.
Why not four?
Okay.
Am I going too far?
Well, they only won three Stanley Cups, so that's a tough.
That's fair.
Okay.
We've got, who do we have?
Jason Greger.
Jason Greger is going to join us now from Edmonton on the Haliford and Breft Show on
Sportsnet 650.
Good morning, Jason.
How are you?
I'm pretty good, fellas.
I'm getting a little bit better than Conn nation right now. Oh what makes you say that?
Last night it's funny because the first periods of the Canucks game and the
Oilers game mirrored each other. As a matter of fact it was eerie how similar
they were. Was it the Oilers surrendered three goals on six shots to the
Colorado Avalanche falling behind three nothing. I think it was three goals on,
how many was it for the Canucks?
Was it three on four?
I think it was three on three.
It might've been three on three shots.
So even worse somehow.
However, Jason, the Edmonton Oilers
found a way to figure it out.
What was that game like last night for the Oilers?
Well, honestly, if I look at all the stuff around it,
you know, it's their third game in four nights.
They'd been on like a seven game road trip basically. Cause they flew from Chicago back to Edmonton for one game and
then back to Minnesota. I thought for sure they were done, if I'm being honest. I thought
that was one of those scheduled losses when you look at fatigue and travel and then you
throw in the altitude in Denver. For them to come back, because really the one goal
Skinner probably might like the second goal back, you didn't you know the other two I have no issue with but Edmonton really
you know they stormed back and they've been playing a really good hockey here
for well basically the whole year like if you know what they started 0-3 and I
did some research before the season teams who lose the Stanley Cup final they
average starting a year five and five. So, you know, that's
the last 10 years anyway. So I didn't expect them to come out of the gates guns a blazing
and they didn't. But you know, since really after an own three start, they're 2910 at
three. Like, they're, you know, they're pretty good only Washington has a better record in
that time. So they've, they've got obviously their top dogs can score. They've limited
goals against they're getting
some depth contributions at key times, their power play is really good, their penalty kill
is really good.
The goal-tenant has actually been pretty good as of late.
So they don't really have a weakness right now, it's just a matter of what Stan Bowman
can do before the deadline.
And that to me, everybody knows, anybody watching that they want a second pair right defenseman,
problem is there's not many of those guys out there and you could make
a list of how many teams want a right shot defenseman. So it's not going to be easy,
but guess what? That's a job. I think it's in today he took over the job. Everybody's
known what they need and their whole plan was to accrue cap space and now Vander Kane
definitely won't be back for the regular season. I don't even know if he'll be ready for the
playoffs to be honest and how good is he going to be back for the regular season. I don't even know if he'll be ready for the playoffs to be honest
and how good is he gonna be having played, you know, hasn't played a healthy game since like last April. So
you know, we'll see if I would look at Kane and say he starts on my fourth line
and if he ends up playing better than that, it's a bonus.
Tell us about Dry Cytle season 31 goals in 45 games.
Tell us about Dry Cytle's season, 31 goals in 45 games. Yeah, I think he's the MVP.
If you look at all of his numbers, because it's not just offense.
You can look at his shot, 4% 5 on 5, you look at his goal, 4, 5 on 5, and he doesn't play
with McDavid very much.
He's been out of this world.
Actually, when he's away from McDavid, Ekholm, and Bouchard, their you know, he's outscored the opposition 13-6 and has like 16 points.
He leads the league in five on five scoring.
Um, takes a lot of face-offs.
He's been their MVP, which is saying a lot when you got McDavid on the team.
But I really don't think it's that close guys as to who's
being the MVP for the orders.
Everybody, you know, you see McDavid and he's Connor McDavid.
And he's the best player in the game, but he hasn't been the best order this season. It's dry saddle. And I
think, you know, if, if you want to dig deeper and you look at, you know, McKinnon, it's crazy. Him
and Ratan and got like 13 and 12, you know, empty that points. I don't have an issue with it. They're
going to break a record, but you know, if you dig deeper and look at a lot of things, it's hard to,
to not say dry saddle over McKinnon at this point. And you know, anybody else you want to put in that category, whether
it's Luke Hughes, you know, or sorry, not Luke Hughes, Quinn Hughes, you know, Hellebuck,
Wawrinski go down the list of guys. I think, I think dry, subtle top to bottom season has
been the most impressive. He, he realistically guys, if you look at what they, what they
did last year with, with Reinhardt and Matthews and said, hey, if you're
a skilled guy who represses goals against,
he could be in a selkie conversation.
That's how good his analytics have been this year.
Uh, how's Pod Coleson been?
You know what?
He, when I watch him play, I'm stunned that
he's not a Rick Tauke player.
That's like, he's physical, he hits, he's fast,
he's very smart defensively.
Like, I'll be honest guys, like that's probably
the part of his game that I'm maybe surprised by is
he doesn't make many mistakes defensively.
And you know, he's chipped in like,
if you're a second line winger,
would I like him to score more goals
playing with Dry Settle?
A hundred percent.
And he's a young player, and I think like anything,
he's like, you know what, I'm not getting scored on. And his numbers are off the charts Yeah. And he's a young player and I think like anything he's like, you know what?
I'm not getting scored on.
And his numbers are off the charts too.
And that's why he stays there because that line's really dominant, five on five.
And Dry-Cytle scores enough and Plotkosem, he's a great complementary winger.
I don't think he's a top-six winger yet because he doesn't have the production of a top-six
winger, but he's a good complementary winger and he's great for dry sidle because he's a
four checker and he's good on the four check and he can get pox and then he gets
it to dry settle then he does the rest in a lot of cases and Poc Olson's got a
really good shot and Chris Knoblox talked about it he's like you know really
kind of hammered him on him use your shot use your shot but they're they're
pleased this punch you get him for a fifth rounder. Like it's a, it's a, you know, a huge trade.
He's basically replaced Dylan Holloway.
Now Holloway is playing great in St.
Louis and he has a lot of production.
And so, you know, he's shown, he has maybe more
finish than Pod Colson, but to lose Holloway for
what they did and basically replace him with
Pod Colson for a fifth has been really good work
for them.
And I, when I watch him, now they got
Kiefer Sherwood, right? Kiefer Sherwood's come in and he's been great for Vancouver, scoring lots
of goals, hitting everything that moves. But when I look at the Canucks and I think of Rick Tauke,
I'm like, how did he not like Pod Colson? Well, I think it's unfair to say he didn't like him.
Okay. Well, the organization then.
No, I think the thing with Pod Colson was he just played way too conservatively.
Like he didn't do anything.
He would go out on the ice and yeah, he would,
you know, he would kind of, he would do the safe
thing every time.
And Rick Tocket would talk about him wanting Pod
Colson to play with a little bit more swagger.
And it seemed like Pod Colson, he had a pretty
good rookie season where he had 14 goals in 79
games and then the next season he played 39
games, had seven points.
Like, and he was given opportunities.
And then the final time he was with Vancouver,
he was with last year was in Abbott's for most of
the time, but he had 19
games in the NHL and zero goals and two assists.
Like he just wasn't doing anything out there.
So I think that was the thing, you know, like he
couldn't play up the lineup because he wasn't
producing and he really wasn't doing enough in the
bottom of the lineup either.
Yeah.
Well, I look at, you know, Hey, some guys, you
need to, you need to change the scenery. Like, you know,
Kaepernick was on waivers and no one thought highly of him.
And for a waiver wire pickup,
Casper Kaepernick has been great for Edmonton. He's on their third unit,
penalty kill. He's chipped in six goals. Um, doesn't get outscored. Yeah.
They kind of, they've got some found money there for sure. Like they, you know,
those guys have,
have worked out better so far than the Jeff Skinner signing for sure.
We're speaking to Jason Greger from Sports 1440 in Edmonton here on the Halford & Brough show on
Sportsnet 650. It wasn't that long ago that the Oilers were off to a very average start. I think
at one point they were 10-9 and 2 on the season and then obviously things have really turned
around since then. What can you say about the job that head coach Chris Knobloch has done this
season because head coaching has obviously been Knobloch has done this season?
Because head coaching has obviously been
a major talking point in Vancouver this season thus far.
Yeah, I'm not sure Knobloch's been much different
than last year.
When he came in, what Knobloch, I think,
he has a very calm demeanor to him.
But he's fiery, but outwardly calm.
I think behind closed doors, he'll rip
guys. I thought one of the best things that Chris Knobloch did was in game four of the
season. The orders were 0-3. They're trailing 2-1 to Philadelphia late in the second period.
For the second straight game, Dry Settle takes an undisciplined penalty. Now Philly didn't
score, but Chris Knobloch sat Dry Settle down for five
minutes, six minutes, which I know that some people like message sent since that
game.
So Dry Settle had four minor penalties in the first four games of the season.
Since then he's taken two and he's played unreal, right?
So you have a coach who that's your second best player and you're like, we
have to set a standard here that you can't just take on discipline penalty. It's cause penalties because you're frustrated. Maybe you're still mad that we lost the cup. I get
it. It's emotional but can't do it. He does a lot of small little things that I think the team
respects. He puts Claude Colson with Dry Set on Arvidsson even though everyone's like, well,
Jeff Skinner was our prize free agent signing in. What is he doing? Well, he's coaching to win games and he's co and it works, right? He,
he rotates guys around. I think he showed a lot of respect to Derek Ryan, let him get to game 600.
And now they recalled Noah Philp because everybody knows they need a fourth line center. And I don't
know if Noah Philp is going to be the guy. I just know Derek Ryan isn't the guy at this stage of
his career. I think Derek Ryan could play on a lot of teams in the league. I don't know if Noah Phillips is going to be the guy. I just know Derek Ryan isn't the guy at this stage of his career. I think Derek Ryan could play on a lot of teams in the league.
I don't think he's going to play on a team that's a legit 100% cup contender
at this stage of his career. So, um, the orders,
they want the depth in case of injuries, but you know, they,
they do the respectful thing and,
and cause Derek Ryan is really well liked in the room and now Noah Phillips,
I think he's going to get a run here. You'll see him again.
He's he played back to back and you know, that line's actually played really well in two games. and now Noah Philp I think is going to get a run here you'll see him again he's he played back-to-back and you know that
line's actually played really well in two games so you know Knobloch he's just
he's really calm he he gives a lot of responsibility to his assistant coaches
and Paul Coffey and Glenn Gullitzen and Mark Stewart and it does never take a
lot of credit but I think he's like he's Eminton when he came in was very bad at
giving up
chances off the rush and anybody who watches NHL today, if you're not good at limiting
chances off the rush, usually you're not winning. That's just, that's just how it is. And you
know, he's done that. Their penalty kill started pretty rough. Then they made the decision.
They put Ty Emerson on their first unit penalty kill. And that's been a huge difference. Like
he's, he's basically a rookie guys. Like he played 30 NHL games last year in San Jose and you know, he's just, he started out,
well they don't overplay him. I think he's only averaging 13 and a half minutes, but
he plays a really key role on your penalty kill. And so then guys feel like, Hey, that's
my job. I'm great there. You know, I don't get overwhelmed the rest. So I think he's
just done a fantastic job of handling his roster and it's, it's hard sometimes to coach
superstars. I, I look at the coach of the year
like I kind of get tired of well which team did we think was going to suck so because we were all
wrong in our projections the coach must be a miracle worker like it's pretty tiring to me
like Stephen Carberry should be coach of the year in Washington. They made the playoffs last year
and look what they're doing Ovechkin gets hurt like coach of the year doesn't always have to be
some reclamation project of a team we thought sucked, right? Like you,
I think sometimes it's hard to coach a good team cause you got to keep them
going and you got to find new ways to get them motivated and play within a
system and you know, everything like that. And you know,
like I look at Vancouver and when I see them on paper and you guys watch them
closer than I, like, I just can't understand how they can't score.
Like I don't get it. And last year down this like very you know
Rick Talkison will plug Coles and play two passives. Vancouver was the most passive team in the playoffs last year. The only reason they beat Nashville is because Nashville had the worst
power play of all time right and they probably could have beat Edmonton but they never ever
prepped they tried to win low scoring games and I just don't think you could win that way in the
NHL. Ask Winnipeg hey we're the defensive team. When we get in the playoffs we get shellacked because we can't
score. Well they couldn't score last year in the playoffs because Elias Pedersen wasn't himself
and he still isn't himself and now they don't have JT Miller going. So there's your explanation.
They also need some more puck moving on the back end. It's hard to start the rush with
pucks off the glass or
pucks in skates. Do you blame the coach then? Because I hear, oh, geez, man, they got a fire
rift talking. I'm like, well, unless Pederson and Miller have some beef with their head coach,
is firing the coach going to suddenly get Pederson out of his funk?
I have no idea, man.
and out of his funk?
I have no idea, man.
I like, I, I. It's been a befuddling season.
Like I just, you know, like I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know what's going on with the Canucks,
but let me tell you, if you're the Edmonton
Oilers and you come ready to play on Saturday
and you get off to a good start, there is a
potential that they are going to bury the
Canucks on national TV. Yeah. Well, I wouldn't, you know, they're still smart to bury the Canucks on national TV.
Yeah.
Well, I wouldn't, you know, they're still
smarting from the Canucks pounding them in the
regular season last year, right?
That eight nothing game and then they want
another one or they want all the regular season
games.
So there's a rivalry there for sure.
And you know, I hate, you know how it is guys,
like Edmonton right now, they're rolling and
they look and if they can make life harder for
the Canucks, they probably would.
Now it is also the final game of a long road trip.
And they, you know, I wonder that, you know, it's a travel day for them.
So they stayed in Colorado, so they're not going to skate.
I'll see.
I didn't think they'd have much in the tank yesterday and they did.
So I can't count them out, but those games always have a little extra juice.
And you know, who knows?
Like, I, like, I'm surprised, Vancouver.
I had Vancouver, you know, to finish with Vegas and Edmonton.
Like I thought it was going to be a really good competitive regular season race.
I'm kind of surprised that I was like, oh, okay, well Vancouver will figure it out.
And then every year look and you're like, oh, they lost again.
And you know, now St. Louis is suddenly right there.
And it's like a three team race for the final playoff spot.
And Vancouver has the most talent.
Like let's be honest, Calgary, St. Louis and Vancouver,
everybody out there would pick Vancouver
as the best team of those three on paper.
I don't think it's close,
but this is a standing show otherwise.
So yeah, it's an odd season and I'm sure,
and I got it, you guys follow them closer to me.
Do you think they're gonna move one of those two centers?
And if so, which one?
We spent the first hour talking about it
and I kind of positioned it as you're either going
to let this thing play out and address it in the off season,
in which case you might be flushing an entire season,
or you just have the big bold move where you say,
we might not win this trade,
we might get the inferior player,
we might get the inferior package,
we might take on a bad contract,
but that might be the thing we have to do
to salvage the season.
You can see it as one or two ways.
If I were to bet right now, it would be Miller.
Yep.
Yeah, well, I think they'd be better off.
They've gotta have a long pitch review.
It's gotta be more than salvage the season,
because if you guys say, okay,
let's say we trade them anyway,
you're all saying that their defense isn't good enough.
Right, their defense right now isn't constructed
well enough to probably go on a deep playoff run, right?
So would you risk losing a trade just to
salvage a season that you probably can't win anyway? Are
you better off, you know, still trying to slog through make the
playoffs because you should make the playoffs at their minimum.
And then, you know, who knows, we've seen crazier things
happen. But yeah, I think it'd be a risk to just make the trade
and I and we've seen teams do it. Yeah, right. We've seen teams
do it before and I had
Kevin Gilmore on who was a long time NHL guy CEO. He built this model that he studied for 25 years
but the line that he said was to get out of losing and not that Vancouver is a losing organization
but he says learning what it takes to win and sometimes it goes a lot of teams think they know
what it takes to win and they don't and a trade like this is monumental for the Canucks,
if they're gonna move one of these guys.
And the other thing is,
these guys have been teammates for five years,
can the relationship really be that bad
or is it overblown that it's supposedly this bad?
That's the part I don't understand.
Did something happen in the off season?
Because last year, those two guys are pretty good.
The year before, they were good. Like what's changed?
Like they're not best friends, but who cares?
Like they obviously got together before.
You know who else doesn't understand it?
The two guys you're talking to.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Jason, this was great, man.
Thanks for taking the time to do this this morning.
We appreciate it.
Enjoy the game tomorrow.
We'll do this again later on down the road.

What up, Moj?
Good morning, gentlemen.
How's the crisis line this morning?
Not bad. Jay and Poco is losing his mind, but outside of that,
things are going OK.
Jay and Jay, Jay's just lashing out.
We'll allow it. We'll allow it.
I don't want to allow it. He's freaking out.
Is it one of those situations where you're getting like a text
from Jay like every like nine minutes?
Yeah. And I'm not, now granted,
I'm not making it any better
cause I just keep telling him to calm down.
And I actually said, I know you're not supposed to do this
when someone is freaking out, but you need to calm down.
He's upset. Get this, because we talked
about the Oilers and I said.
Well, it's better than premiership.
That's true.
Point well taken.
And the Canucks aren't playing Newcastle on Saturday.
Right.
Nottingham Forest is not on the schedule
immediately following it's the Oilers, the Canucks
play them tomorrow, Saturday night,
hockey night, Canada.
It's a big fixture.
Feels like it's a big, it's a derby, if you will.
Right?
The Vancouver Rebels.
It is a derby.
Anyway.
You guys are talking to a soccer expert now.
I'm still in first place and I'm actually starting
to run away with this apprenticeship pool.
Who's carrying your fantasy team right now?
I'm loving it.
Who's the man?
I got Isaac right now.
I had Isaac captain, everybody had Salah captain.
So your captain gets double a point.
I had Isaac and he just killed it last weekend.
The Newcastle striker, Jonathan Esack.
Yeah, he's a good one.
Very well done.
Okay.
Let's talk hockey here, Moj.
I know that you were working the room last night.
You got a good question in there to Rick Tauke at
asking about what might be ailing his team.
I applaud you for trying to figure it out because
we have spent the better part of this morning
trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with his team.
The answer we've come to is we don't know.
Do you have any ideas?
Well, I mean, we're just kind of throwing theories
out there right now, but one of the things that,
in any sport, when your best players are not being
your best players or they're not
playing up to their standards or they're not playing, say, up to the standard where you
think you can win, the confidence of the team gets shot, right?
I mean, in football, if you don't believe in your quarterback and you take to the field,
you're not going to do well.
Hockey, you know, a lot of times people you know, people will focus on the gold tender,
right? Anybody that's played hockey will tell you, I mean, I
played lacrosse at a pretty high level, we had a guy named Dallas
Elliott, who was like, you know, a hall of fame goalie, we thought
we could win every game, because Dallas Elliott was between the
pipes for us. But, you know, that's the thing. Right now, I
just think this team isn't playing with a lot of
confidence. It's just for
whatever reason, and I think a lot of it might be attributed to
the fact that Pedersen and Miller just aren't on top of
their games. And the other thing too, that I kind of think maybe
comes into play because of that, maybe guys are trying to do too
much. I talked about this with Cockett last night during the
media session. And you know, he kind of indirectly said yes, I
guess, but it's it's
a situation where you got to go out there and just trust your teammate don't
try to do too much and talking so he's talking about these you know egregious
bad reads and I wonder what where does that come from does that come from guys
maybe trying to do too much and just not trusting their teammates. So you know a couple more theories to throw out there I guess. What was the vibe like in the
press conference and I don't know if you went into the room and talked to any of
the players like what does it feel like at the rink? I actually went to the
Kings room so I didn't go to the Connection room postgame. I did obviously go
to the talk at Presser media availability session. I't go to the connexion postgame. I did obviously go to the talk at presser,
media availability session.
I did go to the game day skate and went into the room there.
You know, it's just, I don't know.
It's just, to me, it seems like they're just worn down.
Right?
I mean, you know, whether it's JT Miller,
whether it's Pedersen, Besser, right?
I mean, the entire group, I mean, even Quinn Hughes, right?
I mean, it just seems like they've got even Quinn Hughes, right? I mean, it
just seems like they've got the weight of the world on their shoulders right now. And,
you know, they've just got to fight through it. I mean, nobody's going to come in here
and save them. It's not like they're going to, you know, all of a sudden get a big boost
from somebody they have what they have right now. They're pretty much they have their entire
lineup other than, you know, Dakota Joshua. So the vibe that the vibe that I'm getting with this team just being around them is it
seems like here's the thing guys, you play in the national hockey league, have some fun,
right? And it just seems right now, yeah, losing isn't fun. I know that.
But the way you snap out of this is just going out there working hard and, you know,
just trying to be positive and get out of this because right now it just seems like they have the weight of
the world on their shoulders.
Can we agree that management quite
intentionally gave them a public wake up call if
you want to talk, if you want to call it that,
you know, Patrick Alveen's interview with Ian
McIntyre and also really doing nothing to quell
the rumors that the Canucks are listening to trade
offers for JT Miller and Elias Pedersen that
could have easily been denied or rejected and
they kept it out there, maybe even fed it.
Um, can we agree that the strategy is failing?
And if we do, like they were obviously looking
for a response from both of these guys or at the very least
one of them, but if this is the response, then
what's the next step?
I think the next step is you've got to do something.
You've, this team needs some sort of shakeup.
It's almost like they're waiting for the shoe to drop.
I mean, I don't think you get to the point where
you're flared target, but maybe you move one of
those flares, right? And see what you can get. shoe to drop. I mean, I don't think you get to the point where you're player talk it. But maybe you move one of those players,
right and see what you can get just get a new vibe in that room
because right now it's not working. It's interesting. I
talked to one scope, just to echo what you talked about. And
he said, Yeah, he goes, they've been folding teams have been
folding them. And it's not like these guys are off the table.
They're listening to offers. They're listening to serious
offers. So, you know,
who knows? Maybe they do have something up their sleeve here in the next little while.
But this just can't continue. You talk about playing Edmonton on Saturday. Wow. And you
know the thing that concerned me last night was coming off that road trip in that last
game of the road trip where they just looked so flat and went to bed. They come out last
night and you know, to what Pocket said and you guys
talked about it earlier, I mean it was three goals on I think four shots. Remember I'm
looking at the scoreboard halfway through the second I think the shots are like two
to one.
Yeah.
Right I mean it was just a non-event game and yet they make these three really bad mistakes
and the next thing you know they're down three0 and it's just like okay here we go again. But you know I just I'm like you guys I'm just I'm just perplexed the amount of
loss of words in terms of what to you know say about this hockey team. You want
to talk some football instead? Why not I got some good tips for you this week.
Okay start with Washington Detroit so we just had AJ on the show. AJ's got a buddy
Jimmy Aces good name. By the way, pineapple on pizza,
it should be props to that place in London
that's charging 100 pounds. 100 bucks, yeah.
It's disgusting.
Absolutely, why don't you put a banana on your pizza?
Why don't you put an orange on your pizza?
It's absolutely disgusting.
Banana and oranges, now you got me thinking.
Anyway.
Why don't you put fruit on pizza?
Why don't you put, hey, you know what, put a, whatever.
Put a peach on it while you're at it.
Oh, peach pizza.
Okay, anyway, we gotta focus, focus, focus.
We're gonna pretend you weren't being sarcastic.
Challenge accepted.
So anyway, Jimmy Aces said it's the commanders.
Take the commanders.
Not even the spread, like it's nine and a half.
I'd take them on the money line in Detroit,
and I was like, that's bold.
I like it, it's like putting peach on pizza, but how and why can Washington hang with?
I'm not gonna put him on that. I'll take the spread. Yeah the nine and a half
Well a couple things that I got number one Dan Quinn when he was the defensive coordinator of Dallas
Jerr got over to with six turnovers against his team, right? Of course different personnel, but maybe it has something to do with the scheme.
Here's the one thing that's scary. Okay, Washington doesn't have a run game, so that hurts them.
And I look at this and say, this should be Detroit. But, but,
Jaden Daniels is just to be so special.
Right? And here's a guy like Jaden Daniels.
And I can tell you this from, you know,
coaching, I can tell you this from guys
at the pro level, whatever.
You will call them the perfect defense, right?
You will call the defense that everybody's covered,
everybody's, you know, taking care of,
you've got everything down, Pat.
And there's an expression coaches will say in the headset.
They go, coach, we had a guy there, right?
And what that means is
Basically what happens in that situation is you have a guy on the other team
Quarterback or running back usually a quarterback that just has this unbelievable athletic
Athleticism in this unbelievable skill set and even though you've got everything covered. He's still gonna make a play
Yeah, that's what Jayden Daniels is. That's what a guy like Lamar Jackson is, right?
I mean you can call the perfect defense all your your X's and O's and covered, and because
of this guy's athleticism, he's going to make something out of nothing.
And that's the thing about the Washington commanders, that if they have any chance,
it's because of that, because of Jaden Daniels and his freakish athleticism and what he can
do for that team.
So I look at this game and nine and a half is a
lot for a playoff game.
But if I had, I don't think I'll bet that game,
but if I had to, maybe I do take Washington.
Why is it so hard to determine whether guys that
are stars in college, especially at the
quarterback position will be effective in the NFL.
Sometimes maybe it's about scheme, sometimes
maybe about the talent level around them.
Um, I don't know if you guys have heard this
expression, one of the guys on ESPN, I can't
remember who it was, he says there's NFL open
and there's Alabama open.
Right.
What he said, what he meant by what was just
the separation that you get as a receiver, um, get as a receiver with the athletes that you
have.
But when you get to the NFL, you're not going to get that three yard or four yard separation.
You're going to get basically a bread box to throw into.
And a lot of times maybe it's just the way that the stats are rung up.
A great story, Giulio Caravatta, when he played in NFL Europe, tells this story where he played
with Gino Toretta, who had won a Heisman with Miami, right? And he said
he, they were over there and the quarterbacks were like, this guy won a Heisman, right?
But it was a situation where it was just a product of the system. Like, you know, hey,
let's hit like an eight yard out on a hit screen or let's hit an eight yard out or whatever.
Let's hit, no, not even an out, but let's say a hitch screen for like six yards and the guy makes 22 yards
after the carry, right? I mean just things like that. So sometimes this is about the athleticism
around you that inflates your numbers and basically makes you into this star that maybe you're not.
Yeah, the thing that impresses me the most about Daniels is actually not his athleticism.
It's his composure and his decision making, you know?
And maybe that's, you know, some of these
quarterbacks go to teams with horrific pass
protection.
They have to got a terrible offensive line and
like nobody could be composed in those
situations, but it's the ability to make decision making look easy,
you know?
And like when you're composed in the pocket,
the decisions that end up getting made look obvious.
Does that make sense to you?
Oh, totally.
And you know, it's about processing, right?
And when Nathan Rourke had his unbelievable season
in 2022, so much
of that we attributed to his process, you know, in terms of going through like just
one, two, three, boom, you know, making that read and just making the right decision, right?
It's about that process, processing of information that you see on the field
and how quickly you can make the decision.
Yeah, a lot of the great quarterbacks have that.
I mean, they can go out there,
they can go through their progression
and boom, make a decision.
Rather than get into a situation
where you're looking at your first read,
you're looking at your second,
now you're pumping, now you're thinking,
where am I going?
And that's when you run into trouble, right?
But the great quarterbacks are those quarterbacks that go, okay, one, two,
okay, I'm going to two boom. And they just make that, uh, you know,
that decision rather quickly.
We're speaking to Bob the Mojmar John of a chair on the Halford and Bref show
on sports net six 50. Okay. Let's whip through some of these other games. Uh,
Eagles Rams, what do you got?
Um, I like the Eagles in this one. I mean, they played the Rams way back when,
I think it was whatever, but I mean they played the Rams way back when I think it was whatever
But I mean they ran for 314 yards against the Rams think about that. Let that number sink in yeah
314 yards so I
Just look at the defenses in this game
The Eagles are ranked second the Rams are 24th and yeah the Rams have played better as of late this last
Quarter or a part of me third of the season or whatever, but I'll take the Eagles minus six here.
I love the Eagles in this one.
So to me, all Eagles, I'm flying with the Eagles.
The Eagles have a way of just bludgeoning teams,
putting together those drives the last nine and a half
minutes and they just run and run and run.
And since it's such a lock on fourth down
with the tush push, it's like they just never relinquish
the ball.
You do?
I wasn't, yeah.
Go, you know what, expand, explain.
Well, we've seen this tendency in the NFL
and even the CFL where you have this running back
who might be quote gaining an inch for, you know,
like second, basically where they should blow the whistle.
And instead you have these linemen that come in,
they, you know, move the pile. I mean, there was an instance last week, I can't remember which
game it was, but same type of situation. Guy basically got stopped and the next thing you
know the pile moves like, I think it might have been Josh Jacobs in the Green Bay game
where the pile gets moved like seven yards. I mean you know the same thing with the push
push. I mean guys coming up and just pushing the quarterback hurts over the goal line or
to pick up enough for a first down. That play used to be, I mean you guys coming up and just pushing the quarterback hurts over the goal line or to pick up enough for a first down.
That play used to be, I mean, you weren't allowed
to assist the ball carrier, but for whatever reason,
well, they want more offense in the game, I guess.
They basically just, you know, started to ignore that rule.
And as a result, you have an epidemic now
where the game's starting to look like rugby.
Chiefs, what else?
I actually have a question.
I have a CFL question.
Okay.
Yeah.
Uh, Moat.
This game came out by the way, I know you were
eagerly anticipated.
Well, it took long enough.
Only one trip, only one trip to Winnipeg, but no
one with my, my luck will probably play a playoff
game and then we've got to go to the great cup there.
Um, the, is it, is it, does it seem harder now to
convert on third and one in the CFL than it used to?
I feel like it used to be just automatic,
like QB sneak, boom, done.
Oh, I don't think so.
Like, you know, it just, you know, I haven't
looked at the stats, but just, you know,
my gut feeling, I don't think it is.
I think you probably notice it a lot more,
maybe because teams do go for it a lot more.
But in terms of the percentages, no, I mean,
I remember looking at Winni what a picks percentage last year
At one point they were like, I don't know 20 of 21. So I don't think it's no
I don't I'm not buying into that. Okay. Okay. Never mind then. Let's let's bank. We got it
We got a hurry here. We got two more games. We got an ask us anything
Chiefs Texans
Here's the thing about the Chiefs this year when they are favored by seven or more
You know what the spread against the record is?
Record against the spread, oh and six.
Yeah, I know that they had too many close games
and one score games.
Yeah, the other thing too, when you look at,
I know we've got a Russell, Buffalo and Baltimore.
Yep.
I love Baltimore in this one as well.
Here's the thing, Buffalo started as a one and a half,
I think a one point favorite or one and a half point favorite.
That's now swung to Baltimore being a one point favorite.
All the money is going on the Baltimore Ravens,
and here's the thing about the Ravens that I love,
Derek Henry, you know, we talk about having balance,
we talk about taking pressure off Lamar Jackson.
How do you defend a defense that has Henry
and Lamar Jackson?
Man oh man, I think Henry's such a huge boost
to this Ravens team, and if they get flowers back
at the receiving position,
that'll be another thing that they'll have to deal with.
So to me, I'm all in on the Ravens.
I know there's a lot of people who love the Bills,
but sorry, your season comes to an end this weekend.
Okay, and ask us anything.
It is food related.
It's also health and safety related.
And I tested my own personal theory the other day,
so I'm curious to get your answer to this.
Iron Blair wants to know,
ask Moj, what's your rule on how many days
past the day of cooking that you can eat leftovers?
Oh, probably two.
Two?
Two.
I'm really picky that way.
I like my food fresh.
Okay.
I'm not gonna sit there and you know,
like even with turkey during the holidays, I think
it was like two, maybe three, if that.
You're a conservative fellow.
I like it.
Yeah, like two, like you know, but the thing is too, I don't cook enough to have a lot
of leftovers.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah, yeah.
You're not making the big.
I'll just cook enough.
I've learned this, like, especially when it comes to pasta, like maybe 10 years ago, I
would boil like a batch of pasta
that would probably be like four servings, right?
Now I just do enough for one serving.
And then just, that's it, I'm done.
But I don't cook portions that are big enough
to have servings for three, four days.
If anything, it might be a day and that's it.
I did, I'm almost ashamed to admit this on the air.
Uh, why are you whispering?
I hate, I, I pushed, I four days was the max.
Yeah.
I did a five day.
I had a five, I ate a five day old leftover.
Wow.
In our house.
That's called dog food.
What was, what did you eat those five days old?
It was a, uh, beef and green beans stir fry.
Damn man.
Damn.
You know what?
Okay.
I went in.
Is everything okay?
I went in, I went, expectations were low for the, what I was getting.
And I also knew that I was pushing the boundaries of health and safety.
So I was like, if I get sick, I'll know what it's from.
But I was okay.
I was okay.
I don't like admitting it.
I'm saying it out loud now.
I kind of regret bringing it up.
But day five, I did it.
I made it through.
I'm okay.
Not okay in like the what's wrong with you okay, but I'm okay.
And like I made it through.
So anyway.
Here's one for you very quickly. Yes. So if you buy a steak or you buy meat how long do
you let it sit in the fridge before you fry it up oh man that yeah I usually this
isn't I usually wait I got my color a couple months there how much like five
days my surf right like the calendar started to 2025 let's take a look at
that state.
It walks out of the fridge.
He tackles it and puts it like for me, for me, it's a max of two days.
And then I got to like, you know, you know, fry it up or cook it or whatever.
Or freeze it, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or freeze it.
There's no way after two days, it's like, then it's getting sketchy.
I've had situations where I've kind of forgotten about something in the fridge
and Hey, is this okay?
I know.
I don't think you look at it and like, no, no sorry and then you're pissed off at yourself because you threw
away a $30 red buy or whatever the case may be. Let's just make this clear to the
listeners too these are just personal anecdotes this is by no means advice
none of it this is just how we roll don't take this is like a good idea or a
bad idea just do your own thing. This is just my sad life. Yeah. Right.
Maybe you should.
This is the part where you're
basically issuing the waiver.
So we don't get to sign at the bottom
and then you can go.
OK, Moj, thanks for doing this, but enjoy
all the games this weekend.
OK, fellas, have a great weekend.
OK, see you buddy.
Bob, the Moj Marjanovic here
on the Haliford and Bref show on Sportsnet 650.
OK, two hours of the show
in the books. I gotta say, I felt like our two had a lot more lighter moments. Felt like we really
got past the darkness of our one. Yeah. If you want to listen to our one, the podcast confusion
it is with a tinge of sadness and despair, maybe more than a tinge. Uh, our one is available now,
Apple, Google, Spotify.
Download the podcast and listen.
Hour three of the program,
the good times are gonna continue.
Ricky Vibe's also known as Rick Dollywall
is gonna join the program coming up on the other side.
And then we're gonna do Ask Us Anythings
and What We Learned.
It's always a great way to end the week
and to get you guys going on your Friday, okay?
So we got a lot more to get into.
I also have apparently two reads, Andy.
Two reads I need to do before we go to break.
Can I have a request before you do those reads?
Kinda feels like you've already done it.
Stop sending, please, please, can I say please?
Please stop sending in texts suggesting traits
to get Badaard out of Chicago.
Oh, it was a request for the listeners.
I thought it was for me.
No, not for you.
You mean Chicago's not going to trade Connor Badaard?
Like, you know, like I get it.
The cornerstone of their franchise.
What about Pedersen of first and Willander for
Badaard and like, I get it why you, like, they're
not, they're not doing that.
Badaard is the franchise.
Yeah, they're not ever going to trade him.
He's like 19. They're not going to trade him. Look, you just. That's not, they're not doing that. But Dard is the franchise. They're not, he's like 19.
They're not going to trade them.
Look, you just.
That's not going to happen.
It's not going to happen for Celebrini either
in San Jose.
It's not, it's not going to happen.
You have to wait until they both request the trade
out of their respective markets.
You can't make it happen.
You just have to wait for them.
We all know it's going to happen.
You just have to wait for it.
Okay.
But Dard's going to be first cause he's got an
extra year already burned off his contract.
Then Celebrini.
Then we'll bring them home.
Bring them home.
Anyway, I got two reads I need to do.
One is about, oddly enough, food.
The Food Network has all new seasons of your
favorite food shows on channel 410 on Rogers
Xfinity TV.
The second one also kind of food related.
It does involve a restaurant.
The Clayton Public House.
Reserve your spot for the big football party at the Clayton Public House
hosted by Sportsnet 650.
Visit the Clayton Pub dot com for more information regarding those reservations.
The Clayton Public House. Good food.
Good people. Good times. Final hour of the shows coming up.
You're listening to the Halford and Bref show on Sportsnet 650.
