Starting point is 00:02:08 presented by Allstate. Thanks, Allstate. Thanks, Allstate. Yeah. And thank you guys for tuning in. I'm Fortune Feefster. Oh, I'm Mae Martin as well. Oh, and I'm Tignotaro as well.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Yes, we have a change since the last episode. I feel like we keep getting more attractive, or at least you two do. You do too. You're looking mighty fine before I wanted to hear. You're looking tanned. You're looking outdoorsy. Can I show you how tan I am?
Starting point is 00:02:37 Please. Yeah. Have I shown you this? Yeah. So we noticed it. Taking off the Apple Watch. If you're listening, take is revealing the craziest watch tan. That is quite a farmer's tan, as they call those.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Yes, I farm with an Apple Watch. It's good to see you guys. It's good to see you. See the little twinkles in your eyes? Well, we don't get to see each other in person enough. I know. In studio and live shows, no offense to our Zoom recordings, but I was talking to Stephanie about it.
Starting point is 00:03:06 I was like, I got to say the in studio recordings and the live shows, they're electrifyingly. Like, I really, really look forward to it. Yeah, me too. They're very fun. I feel like, well, because, you know, it's when you're with each other, you're picking up on each other's energy. Yeah. Well, and Stephanie just went to her first in-person audition.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Oh my gosh. In six or seven years. Wow. I've got to come in person. They got to bring it back. Well, this, I was going to say auditioner, but casting director has fully brought it back. Yeah, I think it's crucial. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Yeah. I get nervous, though, in person. I think I'm probably better on Zoom. I think I'm better in person. Really? Yeah. Because you can charm them with your games and your. Yeah, you can twinkle.
Starting point is 00:03:56 The old personality gets to shine. Yeah, yeah. And Zoom, I get a little bit lazy with the lines. Yeah. Because I know I have it on the screen if I need it. Yeah. Whereas in person, I have to be off book. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:08 So I think I'm better off book. But it's hard. It is hard to memorize. I did some off book in person therapy. Oh, yeah, me too. What does that mean? You're off book for therapy? Yeah, I just mean I'm normally, my therapist moved to Michigan.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Oh. In the pandemic, I think. Has it been that long? Yeah, that's a minute. Yeah. But I mean, every now and then she comes in town and then I do in person. It's better, right? It's so much better.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I just started up with someone. I had one session with her months ago, and then now I've got two in the bag. I love her. Not in a weird way. I just think she's great. Not in a weird way. I'm not obsessed with her. I'm not like that.
Starting point is 00:04:53 I'm not thinking about you all the time. I'm not Googling her. I did give her a Google. I knew you gave her a Google. You got to give her a Google. You give everyone a good Googling. You got to give everyone a good Googling just to make sure there's no weird stuff. Yeah, see what's up.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Yeah, she's really funny. That's what is the difference. She's funny? Like, subtly, yeah. Is that what you're looking for in a therapist? It puts me out of ease. I'd like to chuckle after I reveal my trauma. She laughs at you?
Starting point is 00:05:23 She's doing bits the whole time. Papa. Yeah. No, she just like, I like it when a therapist swears every once in a while. Like I go, the world's fucked. She goes, it's fucked. It makes me feel safe, you know? If she swore too much, I'd feel unsafe if she was like, this fucking...
Starting point is 00:05:39 She's walking a fine line. Yeah. All right. Yeah, I've heard my therapist cuss a couple of times. Doesn't it feel cool? Yeah, where I was like, it jolted me into reality. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:48 You're like, oh, this is a person. Yeah. This is a person. It's not just a head. You've had the same therapist for years now? since 2018. Whoa. That's how it should be, right?
Starting point is 00:06:00 You're building a long-term relish. I don't have a therapist currently because my life is totally easy, easy. Everything's smooth sailing. You're not carrying any loads. I was seeing a therapist for a while, and then I just kind of fell off. It's hard to make good on those things, but I feel like every time you follow through on like a self-care thing for yourself, then you're teaching yourself that you value yourself. That's what I'm regurgitating what someone said to me.
Starting point is 00:06:31 I've really been sticking with it. Yeah, that's good. Like, I'm every, it's Wednesday at 7 a.m. Whoa. It would be. Yeah, I get up. My internet would be out. You don't like those early mornings.
Starting point is 00:06:43 No, that's impressive. I do have to remind myself to look at my hair and my face a bit before I get on that. Make sure there's no, like, white crusty. Anything. Yeah. What time do you wake up normally? I would say between 5.30 and 6.30. What time do you normally wake up?
Starting point is 00:07:00 9. 8. 9? Yeah, about like 7.45. Exactly in the middle of the two of you. Isn't that so us? That's so us. It's classic us. Thomas, what time do you get up? Around 8?
Starting point is 00:07:14 8 a.m., yeah. Yeah, I feel like I know that. I know it in my heart and soul. The Thomas rises around 8. 530 is too much for. me. That's a little too early for me. I know it would change my life. You'd get so much done, but I don't, I can't fall asleep at night. Guys, every time I drive here and I'm, we're doing in person, I kind of am hoping
Starting point is 00:07:37 that you guys will see me arrive in my car, I realized. I did see you pull up. Oh. Did you see that I hit the fence? Oh, I did not see. I think I saw you while you, maybe I saw you while you were already halfway in. I pulled in feeling good thinking, I wonder if this is their cars. I wonder if they saw me. And then just like as I was parking, just went too far. Oh, the front fence. Yeah, just hit the front fence there. And how'd that feel? Just classic you?
Starting point is 00:08:05 A little tap. Yeah, I thought, oh, God. Yeah. I dated this girl that her grandmother, she lived in a trailer as a kid. And when her grandmother would come over to visit, she'd slam into the trailer and that's how they knew that grandma was there. Grandma's home.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Yeah, I love it. And then also when her grandmother went into a retirement, not retirement, like a nursing home, which is pretty retired. Yeah. But nursing home, she said that there was a woman in a wheelchair who said to her, she was like, let me out of here. And the girl was a very young girl visiting her grandmother. And it was an elder to her. So she opened the door. and there was a ramp
Starting point is 00:08:55 and the woman rolled herself out down the ramp but the wheelchair went off of the ramp and her leg came off. Wait, came off. But it was a prosthetic leg. Oh my God. But she didn't.
Starting point is 00:09:11 I did pick up on that part. She didn't know that as a child and she saw the whole thing happen and the child's eye view. Her leg just flew off. Just how many. pictured it. Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:24 That's not what I pictured. Exactly. Oh my God. Yes. Oh, of course you'd open the door. Of course. If somebody was like, open this door, let me out.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Oh, sure. There you go. Down the ramp and off with the leg. Off with the leg. Off with the leg. Poor lady. Yes. I don't think she's with us anymore.
Starting point is 00:09:45 I don't think so either. No. Bless her. Oh. I have something for you for your house. You do? Yeah, I brought it in. What about my house?
Starting point is 00:09:54 Well, is it a, this is a spa for my feet? A decade. This is, it looks better online. Isn't your headshot? It's my headshot.
Starting point is 00:10:02 It's my headshot. Yeah, but it looked better in the picture. Okay. But it's just for your wall of things that you like. Like, my wall of, in your office. Let's see what it is.
Starting point is 00:10:12 It's just a weird print. It's the golden girls. But in my mind it is a little bigger and a little fancier. No, I'll find a little frame for this. And why aren't our face? I thought at first I was expecting to see all of us. That would have been better. In this, but I could also make that happen myself.
Starting point is 00:10:33 I could put... We could just cut out our faces and put it on there. I should have done that. That's very sweet, May. Thank you. Well, May's very thoughtful. Thank you for being a friend. Look at their hair.
Starting point is 00:10:44 Travels down and running back again. Still never seen an episode. Still never seen an app. It's so good. It's written by gay men. You know? That's surprising. Sassy ladies saying words written by gay men is perfect
Starting point is 00:10:58 That's the dream combo For sure Well you know we had some renovations that are complete at the house So it's like a brand new house Where's my present? Yeah you're right Can I get a picture of the cast? Oh I was going to say the cast of good times
Starting point is 00:11:10 But let me put in a better request Yeah yeah well you want There is a painting in the beginning of good times Oh yeah With the music Wasn't it's just all these people dancing And the camera pans along that paint Is it the cast or just random people dancing?
Starting point is 00:11:26 Okay, I'm on it. I'm on it. I've always wanted that painting in my life. I'm on it. When someone mentions something and I make a little log, like, so I'm going to see Beauty and the Beast on stage with Parv and Amma. And so I ordered, we were like, it'd be fun to go in costumes. So I ordered these full, like a Lumiere costume, the candlestick, Parv's Mrs.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Potts, the teapot, and then Amma's Chip. What are you in a relate? Yeah, what am I obsessed? And so we put them on and first of all, Parv's daughter did not like hers. She was like, it doesn't, I don't feel immersed enough. And then mine I put on, I thought I was being really like charming and fun and free. And I looked in the mirror. It's the most unattractive.
Starting point is 00:12:13 I can't explain it. I'll have to show you. It's like it covers all my hair. So it's like this. Yeah. And then I got like, it's crazy. I've never seen your hair like that. I know.
Starting point is 00:12:22 And it's a big part of my. Yeah. My look is like that it's not ever like that. Yeah, that's definitely. And it's got these little yellow pants that come up and a little like fluffy neck and you're like I'm out. I can't do this. You can't do fluffy neck. I can't do fluffy neck. But now part's like you have to. And this I'd you can't change the costume. I'm going to try and make it a little cooler, a little sex here. Like cut the sleeves. Cut the sleeves. A little muscle tea. Just some yellow sweatpants instead of the little Wait, and this is an interactive? No, it's just the musical on stage, but I think people will dress up.
Starting point is 00:12:59 They're in a relationship, fortune. I think other people will dress up. Do you? We'll find out. We'll find out, yeah. I hope that no one else dresses up, and you have in this insane costume. I don't even know how we'll sit down. They're really big.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Someone's sitting behind you and you have the candle, the candle on the top of your head. Wait, wait, what? Wait, is it? Yeah, a candleabra, right? Yeah, right? Yeah. And whose idea was this to dress up? Mine, like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Oh, no. So you did this to yourself. I did this to myself. Yeah. But I didn't anticipate how embarrassing I'd look. Do you still feel gung-ho about? I'm trying to get out of it. I said, can I be Gaston?
Starting point is 00:13:40 Can I be the Beast? Yeah, how did you not come up with Gaston to begin with? I know. Why am I, Luier? That's the obvious choice. I know. I know. I'll let you know how it goes guys.
Starting point is 00:13:51 it's less than a week. I don't know what to do. I love looking over it too. Trying so hard to be invested in this. I just, you just went. I cannot imagine wanting to do that. Really? I would honestly, that would not be my thing.
Starting point is 00:14:07 No, two against one. We're big Beauty and the Beast test. Two against one for sure. I know I love Beauty and the Beast. I just don't want to dress up. No. I know. I think I thought this will make a memory, you know.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I mean, honestly, you might, you guys might giggle. for hours. Yeah. It could be great. Like Parve has a full gray wig um and is a teapot. I mean, it's pretty funny. And is she into it? She's very into it, but she looks gorgeous as long as you are into it. I'm, but I'm not into it anymore. I gotta get out of this. Let's fast forward. You're with Parv. Yeah. Uh, into your, um, elderly days. Yeah. And, and, and, and her hair is gray. Yeah. Would you be okay with that? Well, this was a good test. I got to see it. Yeah, that bone structure is still there. Yeah. Yeah. I found it very sexy. Yeah. Maybe I'm into it. Did I tell you my type? No, tell me. I mean, obviously, this is not Stephanie, a description of Stephanie, but I kind of like exhausted housewife. Yes, you've told me that. Yeah, like sort of frazzles. Really? Mm-hmm. Yeah, what does that look like? I don't know, but I kind of thought, well, maybe Parvite's got that going on with the gray wig and, you know, kind of, I like a little bit of, um, Like a stain on the shirt?
Starting point is 00:15:23 No, like some wrinkling in the cleavage area. Oh, okay. You know, just like... Rinkling in the, like, a bit of sort of, yeah, yeah. A little bit, you know. Like she's lived. And the hair is a little askew. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Like I was just cleaning back here. How can I help you? Yeah. And I'm like, oh, exhausted house, why I've answered the door. What a fantasy. Yeah, that is very fantasy. And then you're like, take a load off, girl. Let me show you how to relax.
Starting point is 00:15:54 It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but sometimes when I see an exhausted housewife, I'm like, blah, boom. Hello. Hello. I mean, school pickup and drop off is a hot bed. Except in L.A. You're right.

Starting point is 00:19:27 So this will have already aired. I'm sure I had a great time. I'm sure you had a blast. Tell us how the U.S. Open went. I invited my oldest brother to go with me, so we'll see if we end up having a fun. Just the two of you? Brother, sister, Bond. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:43 Just the two of us. We haven't done anything together a long time. He hasn't, as of this recording, he hasn't told me a yes or no yet. Oh, he said yeah. He's keeping you. You think so? You guys are playing hard to get. He's playing hard to get.
Starting point is 00:19:55 But yeah, I'm excited. Have you been? I've never been. I can't, I've been playing tennis since I was five years old. Well, I see your, what's so called? Oh, those are tennis shoes. The mole Stan Smith. Yeah, I almost call him Sam Smith.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Yeah, I've never been. So this is quite exciting. Is it like there's. a whole, like the U.S. Open, like people dress up and wear little hats and stuff. Like, you know, the way Wimbledon are people like. I honestly don't know. No, I don't think it's dressed up like Wimbledon. There's no blazers and stuff.
Starting point is 00:20:29 But do they wear little tennis outfits? Do they wear in the crowd? Do they wear? No. No. It's Americans. So there are always, there's some people that look really nice and other people are super cash in like athletic gear.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, there was this comedian that I started out and stand up with. her name was Carol Ann Leaf. And she had a joke that I loved so much about the people. In fact, I ran into her after a million years at some Oscar event, but she had this joke about in the audience, the whatever, at tennis, I don't know if it's at Wimbledon or whatever, but when women show up in their tennis outfits,
Starting point is 00:21:09 as though they're going to be like. Oh, as if they're playing. Well, just, you know, they'll show up in tennis skirts. That's so funny. Envisors to watch. In case someone's like, we've had an injury. That's right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:24 If Ms. Janet Johnson could please come down on the court or whatever she said. Anyway. It's like someone dressed in as a pilot for every flight just in case. Yeah. Just in case. Gosh, should we do an in-memorium? Oh. It's such a bummer, but I feel like we talk about Dolly Parton a lot on the pod.
Starting point is 00:21:43 You guys are deep fans. Well, what's crazy is that our podcast aired the morning that Dolly passed. And we happened to like randomly talk quite a bit about Dolly. Yeah. Sang one of Dolly's songs. We were talking about dressing up as Dolly. Yeah. Wait, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:22:04 That's on this episode that's out today. The episode that aired a couple days yesterday. What's today? Yesterday. Yeah. Yeah. We talked a lot about Dolly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:15 And it came out the day. happened to pass like a I don't did she pass that morning or it was at least announced that she passed yeah and so people were like listening to our episode talking about her and you know how much
Starting point is 00:22:29 we love her and then we're getting these notifications about her passing as they were listening how trippy is that so have we gotten comments of like yeah oh yeah where people are like oh my gosh people are being like what a weird coincidence
Starting point is 00:22:46 I think they know we recorded it earlier. Wow. It's the Katie Couric episode. Yeah, yeah. Okay. But, you know, obviously. We didn't know. God, what a loss.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I know. I think the thing everyone kept saying is like she just seemed like she lived forever. Yeah, yeah. She just cannot imagine a world without Dolly. I know. It's like part of your inner world dies too. Like someone you grew up watching and yeah. And also when someone passes away and then you see all the clips of them,
Starting point is 00:23:16 over the decades being interviewed and she just made it look so easy to be tolerant and compassionate even in like the 80s or whatever she she was so like inclusive yeah be who you are love who you are what's the big deal like um and stephan showed me a video of the um Buckingham palace um playing nine to five yeah and that really got me i know even in in england you think of her as such an americana kind of But yeah, it was like their brass bend or their marching bend, 5-9 to 5. Yeah. Well, I mean, I just, people were trying to think, like, is there another comparable person? Obviously, there will never be anyone like her, but there really isn't a comparable person because, I mean, truly she went across all aisles, all different kinds of people, all different kind of backgrounds.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And I don't think anyone can live up to her legacy because what we're learning, and a lot of people knew already, is how generous she. She was like how the, I think she gave away $500 million. $500 million. Yeah. So like the amount of people she touched not only with her money, but with her music, with her songs, with her, you know, acting, there is no one that compares to what she has done in her lifetime. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:36 So everyone, like every video was people sobbing. Yeah. You know, apparently, I mean, I love this idea that like one of the highest, forms or places of enlightenment you can reach is generosity. Yeah. Is just...
Starting point is 00:24:53 That's so nice. I like that concept. Yeah. Yeah. And didn't she, on the same day she wrote I will always love you and Jolene. She wrote them both on one day. Well, imagine that. Imagine writing any of anything. I saw her
Starting point is 00:25:10 live. Have you seen her live? No, I never got to see her live. This woman, fingernails. to hear playing a banjo Yeah amazing I don't even
Starting point is 00:25:20 I'm like What the hell am I even looking at Yeah Aside from a guitar A banjo Yeah
Starting point is 00:25:25 Sure there's like Picking But like the fingers On the finger yeah Yeah I don't know I got to meet her And I
Starting point is 00:25:33 She's so lovely And you know Like everybody Just wanted to tell her You know Thank you for everything And it was one of those
Starting point is 00:25:41 places where They tell you Not to take pictures So I was like I'm not gonna ask I want to be respectful. And then I got home and like everyone at the party had taken a picture with her. And I was like, oh my God.
Starting point is 00:25:53 So like I, you know, wish I had that. But, you know, I just am grateful I got to meet her just to like say thank you. Right. But man, I mean, I, everyone I talked to the day she died just talked about how much they cried. Yeah. I had dinner with Natalie Mainz that night. And I was like, I cried today. She's like, me too.
Starting point is 00:26:13 Like I cried today about Tim Curry who who passed away the day after Dolly. I don't know why that got me too. And similarly, I always for years was like I want to, there was something online, maybe on his website, you could buy like a 20 minute conversation with him on Zoom. Oh really? Yeah, I guess he was doing that. Like cameo, that type of thing. And I was always like, I'm going to do that. I'm going to, I'm going to do that just to tell him like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:40 and that my dad went to the stage show and he was in that play with my grandpa and like rock hero picture show just was so huge for me the message of like fluidity and fun and and he and dolly pardon both have that like twinkle in there like a sense of fun and playfulness and yeah he was beloved as well it it's it was kind of trippy too because both of them were 80 and my mom's 80 And I've been kind of lately been like, oh, my mom is like so young to me. Yeah, yeah. And I felt that way with, you know, them. I'm just like, oh, 80s, 80 feels too young in these times.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Yeah, it's weird how that's happened. Yeah, right? If somebody 75 dies, people are like, so young. Yeah. Whereas you're like in the 70s, it's like 65. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you feel, I felt like I just expected Dolly to have at least another 10 years. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Yeah. Because on the exterior, she's always looked so amazing. Yeah. And even in the videos they posted of her from a week before, she looked incredible. Yeah. You could tell she was a little tired. Uh-huh. But, you know, other than that, I think it was a huge shock.
Starting point is 00:28:02 So we definitely just wanted to, um, just rest in peace Dolly Tim yeah I was listening to an interview with Tim Curry and they said did you ever go to one of those
Starting point is 00:28:15 like Rocky Horror Picture show late night screenings like in disguise go and watch you know where people shout out and so he said he went and then they thought he was an imposter
Starting point is 00:28:26 and they tried to kick him out and then he showed his passport and said I am Tim Curry but it was after the dirty kicked him out oh my God
Starting point is 00:28:34 and then And she said, oh, I'm so sorry, do you want to come back in? And then he said, I wouldn't dream of it. And then he started, like, cackling. That is hilarious. That's so funny. Yeah. That is similar to Dolly's story where she went to a drag show.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's funny. Where all the guys were in drag ads, Dolly. Uh-huh. And she entered the contest and walked across the stage. And she said that she got the least amount of. collapse because you know all the drag queens look unreal like the hair was crazy the outfits like
Starting point is 00:29:10 dolly on steroids yeah dolly's just being dolly yeah and got like no she said she got like the least amount of applause and she said on the inside she was dying laughing and ended up yeah losing the dolly farting uh drag contest that's like the amount of times i've lost the uh chignotaro roll I just lost my box. Collie would like that joke too. Thank you, Mr. Thomas. I lost my box. My box is back.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Yeah, it is, girl. Well, I did one of, in my animated HBO special called Drawn. I had a bit about listening to a Dolly Parton song, and the bit goes very dark and gory. Oh, great. And we had to ask for permission to use the song, and I was scared that it wouldn't be approved because it gets very dark and very.
Starting point is 00:30:15 And apparently when they reached out to the manager, I mean, who knows if this is true, but that Dolly personally approves everything. Oh, really? And that she approved that. Oh, that's cool. Yeah, and it's a very gory joke to her very upbeat song. I love it.
Starting point is 00:30:38 So that was a fun little like, oh. Yeah. And my friend Beth Malone has been working with Dolly on the Broadway play of Dolly's life. And Dolly wrote it. Was there every day working on every bit of that? musical. It'll still go ahead, right? I hope so. Yeah. I would think so. Yeah. More than ever, people would want to see it. Yeah. Anyway, we love you. We love you. We love you, for sure, and Tim. Oh my gosh. And all of our handsome listeners. And should we get into
Starting point is 00:31:21 our question? That's why we're here, right? It is while we're here. It's why we're here. It's why we're queer. And people need to get used to that. That's right. Today's question, Asker is an Emmy nominated actor, director, and producer known for movie franchises like The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect, as well as TV shows like 30 Rock, Mrs. America, and the miniature wife, Elizabeth Banks is asking today's question. Oh, you know what? What? Full circle moment. Yeah. Elizabeth was in the Spider-Man, as you know.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Sam Ramey. I do know that. Toby McGuire. I was a journalist, and I covered that movie premiere. and I remember very distinctly. She wasn't really known at the time, I don't believe, but seeing Elizabeth in the bathroom. You remember it.
Starting point is 00:32:09 I don't know how I remember that moment. I don't know why. But I just remember that moment. Kid, you got what it takes. In fact, I'm going to book you on my podcast down the road. Hey, handsome, it's Elizabeth Banks. I have a question for you today. And the question is, what is something that you have had a love affair with that is not a person?
Starting point is 00:32:37 So I'm thinking like an activity that you've loved to, like you're a lifelong runner and you can't live about it. Or you had a passionate, quick, brief affair with, you know, an animal that you just loved, or with, you know, an animal that you just loved. or with reading or a book or a director or just like something that just juices you up and fills you with excitement that you can't wait to do. Interesting. Great question. It's not a person. A thing.
Starting point is 00:33:13 But it could be an animal, she said. Yeah, it could be an animal. Yeah. That's a really good question. Oh, man. I mean, I'm like, I'm such a. I have such fan energy of, like that's such a big part of, I have such an obsessive, especially in my teens, like a really obsessive fandom of so many things.
Starting point is 00:33:33 So I'm trying to think more like activities. I mean, I guess, I mean, this isn't the most basic forms of it, but I'm like so into espresso. You're like a love affair with espresso? I have a love affair with espresso. I'm excited to go to bed at night because I know I'll be waking up in the morning. And I'll get to have it. Did you have to train yourself to like the taste? So what happened was, I like most people, when you drink coffee at first, one, it's so sugary sweet.
Starting point is 00:34:06 Yeah. Because, you know, in my town, hardly anyone drank coffee when I was growing up. Really? Wow. And I drank coffee when I was three. Yeah, there was like no coffee shop in my hometown, not one. What were they drinking? I don't know, but I remember some parents.
Starting point is 00:34:22 The hell were they drinking? Some parents. Some of my friend's parents drank it And I'd be like, oh, wow But it was not a thing Like until like And you know, Starbucks, that That culture didn't really take off for a while.
Starting point is 00:34:36 Yeah. And then when I moved to L.A., The big drink was the ice blended from coffee bean. It was like Britney Spears was drinking them and stuff. Like a cream. And you did everything. Brittany did.

But the Frapuccinos and the ice blenders is what I think set off the coffee craze because it was so it was like drinking a milkshay. And it became huge. Like coffee culture I think really took off from there where all of a sudden there was Starbucks everywhere and it was just like a thing. Like what year are you thinking? This was like 2003. Okay. I mean, I agree to disagree. Starbucks was popping off in Seattle. But I'm talking about, you know, there was certain spots where coffee was. was definitely popping off, but as a whole, I think early 2000s was not in your poe dung town. That's right.
Starting point is 00:39:00 Not in my poe dung town. Do you like having everything about it, like the process, the little cup, the beans, like the, um, more just the taste. Okay. I mean, no. And my grandmother drank coffee, but she only had it at like certain restaurants, like, and but that was not like an every meal kind of thing. But I just didn't. So coffee was just not part of my life.
Starting point is 00:39:23 but then I got into coffee because of the sugary ice blended and it was sweet and delicious. Brittany and such. Yeah. Me and Britt, drinking our ice blended. And then I finally, health-wise,
Starting point is 00:39:37 had to reel in at one point, and I did that whole 30. You know what's whole 30? Where you just eat whole foods. Okay. And you have to cut out all sugar, all carbs. I've never done it,
Starting point is 00:39:47 but I'm... I did it twice. And you have to cut it out for a month, I think, all these things. For 30 days. For 30 days. So I had to cut out all the stuff in my coffee. So I had to drink black coffee for a month.
Starting point is 00:40:02 And I was like, oh, it turns out I do like the taste of espresso. So I've never gone back. I put a little bit of oat milk in it. Yeah. And I don't add any... A dollop. A dollop of oat milk. I don't add any sugar.
Starting point is 00:40:14 And I think I've said on here, my drink of choices and ice quartado. Yeah. And that is my love affair. I love it so much. I love seeing you. You're so happy. You're so happy. You're so happy.
Starting point is 00:40:26 I just have such a love affair with it. Oh my gosh. Is this a little tiny baby fortune? Baby fortune in love with my love girls. Now when did you do Whole 30 and get off of Frapa Wipas? Frappawippas. That would have been I was on the Mindy Project because I got so, or no, it was the end of the Mindy Project because I got so fast. so fat doing the Mindy project.
Starting point is 00:40:54 Don't you talk about my friend like that. No, I really did because we ate like crazy on that show. There was like two food trucks a week. They like fed as lunch. There was like halapeno paupers at like 10 a.m. That's not fair. And I had no
Starting point is 00:41:10 self-control. And was it a show whereas the seasons went on everybody was expanding? Yes, because the costume designer would be like, you know, so-and-so added this much in the their pants size. And yeah, we're on it.
Starting point is 00:41:25 Telling everyone. Did you hear? I'm overheard it. So and so added X amount in their pants size. And so at the end of the Mendi project, I was like, I have got to detox my body. So yeah, I did it. And I lost a lot of weight doing it. And I stuck to it for a while.
Starting point is 00:41:47 But what year was that? I apologize. I don't know what year it was. That's the Mindy Project. 2017. Oh, okay. Yeah. So that's changed my relationship.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Yeah, with coffee. Okay. And you have a machine at home? I do have a brevel. Yeah, yeah. Because it's honestly, with, you know, this economy, you guys, everything's so expensive. If I were to go buy coffee every day, that would be very pricey. So it does save me a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Yeah. Making it at home. But, yeah, it's got the, it's like a little tiny barricie. a machine. It has the grinder. Yeah. And you do the thing and you do the thing and you put it in there. You know. Fortune and her love affair. My dad telling us how you handle it too. That's right. For a minute, my dad was like a spokesperson for a coffee company. Oh, nice. And they had a mysterious man. He's so mysterious. And they said, can we make a video of you talking about how you, about how coffee's like wine and you should pair different coffees with different foods? I don't think he believes that to be
Starting point is 00:42:51 true. Or also he, at the time was a heavy smoker and very few taste buds, but he really went for it and he was like, it sounds a little precious to talk about coffee, the way you talk about wine, but I remember the video so clearly that he was like, I might have a dark roast with a delicious piece of chocolate cake. That sounds amazing how you describe him saying. That is my jam. Yes, chocolate and coffee? Yeah, when we go out to eat, I like to have a chocolate dessert. Yes. And pair it with an espresso. Yeah, decafasperza. Well, you guys know one of my favorite desserts.
Starting point is 00:43:24 Me? I forgotto. I forgot about it. Oh, I forgot about it. Yeah, that's, oh, a forgotto is my jam. I'm a peanut butter bitch and an avogato bitch. Yeah, you're cheating on your peanut butter with your eye. You forgot about peanut butter.
Starting point is 00:43:42 I forgot about it. No, I love me some a fagato. It's just ice cream, preferably vanilla, with a shot of a special. espresso on top. Do we need merge that says I forgot about it? What is it? Forget about it?
Starting point is 00:43:57 I forgot about it. Maybe. You never know. Anyway, I got very excited. That is truly a love affair because I don't get very giddy about things like that. Yeah. Why aren't you twirling your hair?
Starting point is 00:44:15 Yeah, what is I twirling my hair about? You were twirling your hair. You were day drunk? And you were like, oh my God, girl. And you're just, I don't think the episode's aired yet. Oh, wow. I can't remember what I was giddy about, but. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Yeah. See, what about you? Good luck matching that energy. Good luck matching the. I want to see what it looks like when you have a love affair with something. Oh my gosh. You should have caught me when I first met Stephanie. That was cuckoo, bonkers.
Starting point is 00:44:49 You were just like cloud dives. I was like Tom Cruise jumping on the sofa. Yeah. Eyes were crossed. Yeah. Oh my lord. You know, I was thinking, I mean, I've talked so much about, I, this is so boring and I, this isn't what I'm going to use, but I was very, after being sick, very interested in
Starting point is 00:45:13 in food and like nutrition and how the body heals itself and her. itself and I was studying it and I was so into it. You were going to be a naturopath, right? I was going to start doing Zoom. And I tell you what Reese Wterspoon said. We were filming that movie we did and I was like, yeah, I was like, yeah, I think I want to start doing, offering Zoom sessions and coaching people. And she was like, oh my God, you are going to make hundreds of dollars. But I would say, especially on the heels of just doing that massive hike that was ranked rigorous. Was it ranked rigorous?
Starting point is 00:46:01 Yes. I missed that. Yes. Ranked rigorous is a really good for your next special. It was ranked rigorous. Ranked rigorous. It's pretty good. It reminds me of when I did long.
Starting point is 00:46:17 long-distance cycling. Oh yeah. I was so into that. Yeah. And I didn't have a car. And I cycled everywhere. I cycled to my stand-up shows. I cycled on the road. Like I performed in Portland, Oregon, and then cycled to Seattle, Washington. Oh, my gosh. And it was truly, yeah. I'm picturing you're doing stand up in the in lycra with these like bulging microchorts yes um but i was i was so into it i was very inspired my uncle um is a cyclist and when i would visit my uncle and aunt there were all these books about long distance cycling and trips you can take and training and and i just you know hanging out visiting i'd pull these books off the shelf and and then i was like this looks actually so cool to just pack your little bags on your bike and hit the road. And I found it to be very
Starting point is 00:47:20 meditative. And maybe I've talked about that. I call it connecting the dots in life. Where I don't think so. And I guess it's kind of the opposite of meditation, but it still cleared my mind so much. Because I didn't listen to music. Yeah, and you've got to be so present. Very much so. And I would connect the dots in my life and think about, oh, maybe I should do this. Or I've, oh, this person would be good to partner with that. Or maybe I should just ever, I just started connecting these dots and creating these constellations of like, ooh, this is what I want to do or this is what I want to try. Yeah. And it just made me feel so good. And after I started having really bad back problems, I had to abandon it.
Starting point is 00:48:10 And that's what was so nice about this past summer. I know I can't do these 50 and 100 mile bike rides anymore. A day, that's how far. You were doing them a day? I was doing not every day, but when I would do a cycling trip, I'd do 50 to 100 miles a day. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:48:29 And it's no joke. Does not sound like a joke to us. But I'm good at endurance stuff. That's my strength. But it felt nice to kind of hand it off to this long hike to ask. That's rigorous, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:49 And that feeling of accomplishment and like sort of exhaustion, but in a good way. And it's challenging myself. It's like the competing against other people, that doesn't drive me. Yeah. I'm not like, how fast did you or how many miles or it's, it's, it's, really like what I'm doing is is what would drive me with that and I can't claim that even though I do hike regularly I can't claim that hiking has taken the place because biking was really what made my heart and soul sing but I do love hiking and I'm very excited about the plan that I have with my
Starting point is 00:49:31 friends to pick a beautiful spot around the world every year and go just take these long treks and see gorgeous things and have great conversations. That's, I guess. That's the new love affair. Oh, I like that. Do you miss the cycling, though? I don't at all. Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:49:51 It had its time. It totally had its time. It gave you what you needed at the time. It's same with like I used to play guitar. And I was very in love with playing guitar and drums. And I find it fun and I'm interested to do it here and there. Yeah. I, when I think of cycling 100 miles a day for like a week, I'm like, what the hell?
Starting point is 00:50:13 That's so a week. I can't even fathom that many miles. Whereas like a yearly one week trek where you're walking maybe 10 miles a day or something. I can't quite figure out like marathon runners and stuff. Part of me is like, what are you running from? kind of. Like when they're, they're, like,
Starting point is 00:50:35 bleeding from their nipples and stuff. Like, it's so hurt for, and it's just shitting their pants as they run. Yeah. Like, and isn't the word marathon comes from the guy in ancient Greece who ran to tell them the Spartans are coming or something? He ran the length of a marathon and then it's, Mayfax.
Starting point is 00:50:51 We have no idea about Mayfax. And the word comes from, then his heart exploded after he gave the news. It's like, this is not a good length to be running. No. No. And I don't want that. kind of, even though this hike was rigorous and I'm glad I did it and I don't need to do it again.
Starting point is 00:51:07 Yeah. And that's what inspired the, you know what, flat walks past beautiful waterfalls and cliffs. There you go. I'm in. I'm totally in once a year for that. Yeah. Not like let's pack up and cycle for 100 miles. Anyway, that was an old love affair. I've been trying to like listen, but also I've been going. I've been going. I've been. been frantically trying to think about like, I mean, comedy's a big one or I mean, my fandoms are such like flagposts in my life. And when you say comedy, is it more stand up or improv or? These days, I don't know if I'm, it was always, it was more like the green room. It was more like the atmosphere and being there and connection. Yeah. And in my teens, I did a lot of weird characters and improv and yeah, stand up when it's, I've never had a love affair with like going to clubs and doing a 20-minute set. I'm not good at it. And yeah. What do you mean? I just don't have
Starting point is 00:52:12 short jokes and it's, I guess because it was the early 2000s, like the atmosphere felt scary. When coffee was taking off. When coffee was first discovered in America. A real coffee boom in the early 2000s. Me and Brittany started it. What I actually want to say is weed, but I, that I had a love affair with where I, I mean, and then now looking back, I'm like, was I self-medicating? And I find other ways to do that now. But I, when I first smoked weed, I was like, this is. I'm home. I'm home. Yeah. I was like, I went to see Dark Side of Oz with the Pink Floyd and they showed Wizard of Oz. And you could smoke weed inside. in the theater and I was like nothing has ever been more beautiful and then it felt like just such a
Starting point is 00:53:02 like paradigm shifting thing and I would have done anything for it and I was so into the paraphernalia and the smell of it and the the process and the like oral fixation of like rolling and something like I really was so passionate about it and not in a not in a great way but so maybe does that I mean it was a I still smell a lot of it fair. I did not smoke pot for a long time. And then now I don't really. It sounds like maybe you do. No, I don't.
Starting point is 00:53:36 I just don't have a rule for myself of like never. Yeah. But I, yeah, I'll never feel like I did in my teens with it. And looking back, it ended up being so disruptive to my life. But also, it really saved me from harder drugs. like when I stopped doing Coke, I think I wouldn't have been able to stop without wheat. Did you have a Coke nail? Never.
Starting point is 00:53:59 I would never have a Coke nail and I do think that's a red flag. For a deeper, more serious problem maybe? Yes, yeah. But I really was, it was, I got into Coke so young and then, and then weed felt like a much softer, kind of sillier, especially after having a Coke addiction, not eating and just like And then weed is like, I just want to eat cake with my friends and play Super Mario. Have espresso with that cake maybe? Oh, it's delicious.
Starting point is 00:54:29 And then tip your co-pinkies up. Oh, no. Coking pinkies up. Cocaine pinky. Yeah, I don't know. I've never done Coke. I haven't either. I've never seen it.
Starting point is 00:54:40 It's, it's, it's. I've seen it for sure. Like so many drugs. Well, aren't you? I'm so cutting it. I've seen it but never done it. I was too busy cycling. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:50 Yeah, you're, I got to connect these dots in life. I just wasn't. I just wasn't. I mean, apparently a lot of people with ADHD self-medicated in their teens with stimulants because it's like I felt like I was in the room for the first time ever. But I think so many drugs, especially in California, it's like there's a culture around them where it's like you can use them as tools to, you know, and people do mushrooms. Like the microdosing and stuff? Coke has no therapeutic. benefits, I think.
Starting point is 00:55:21 I'm like, it's only so bad for people. Now it's so dangerous with the fentanyl. I can't even imagine even dabbling in it. All the cartels and like there's just no reason to do it and just makes people so insufferable. And and- Coke makes people insufferable. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so I'm going to say weed, but the love affair is over.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Y'all's love affair have ended. Yours is ongoing. continuing. You're in a long-term love affair. I forgot about it. Oh my gosh, you guys. Should we hear what Elizabeth has to say? Yeah, let's do it. So for me, I'm in a, I've had a bunch of love affairs with, you know, various things and ideas and movements. But right now, I am in a passionate
Starting point is 00:56:17 a love affair with mahjong. It's like all I think about when I'm not doing it. I'm thinking about when can I do it next. It's I love like a ladies weekend where all we do is eat and wear pajamas and drink a little bit and play mahjong. I love teaching it to people. I want other people to be, I will teach you guys if you want. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:46 So yeah, I'm obsessed. Put it on the list. And I'm not new to it, just to say, I've been playing it for a little while. So I know it's like all the rage right now. And I feel like part of, I've, I've partially been about it for a while. Like it is real, real fun and something that I just love doing. Oh. Now, okay, we got to put on the list.
Starting point is 00:57:11 It's like a big thing right. It is a big thing right now. And here's my first question. What is it? Mahjong is a Chinese board game that that's all I know. Thank you, May. Let's go to commercial. You seem like you were really going to come out me with some info.
Starting point is 00:57:28 I thought it was going to come out of me. It's a board game. I know what it is. Because I saw. I can picture it. I learned about it from the movie Crazy Rich Asians. Okay. And it's been popular forever in Asian cultures, obviously.
Starting point is 00:57:44 But for whatever reason, currently it's, like all their age, people are playing it. We got to get how that. I guess because Elizabeth Banks is playing it with everyone and offering to teach you everybody. I would like to learn how to play. I would love to learn. I have a set.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Matt's wife bought me a set from China. So I got, I can't believe I said weed and I should have said Fuseball. That's what I have calluses from. I'm playing for hours every day. I'm sorry, it's too late. Yeah, it's too late. It is.
Starting point is 00:58:11 We cannot go back. No. But the answer is Foozboleck. Anything, it is foozy. Yeah. Oh man, I love it. Yeah. I get it's very...
Starting point is 00:58:20 How about tennis ball while you're on weed? Yeah. Do you know Kelsey Cook? No. Very funny comedian. Her Netflix special just dropped recently. I think I saw the ad for it, yeah. Her mom was a, like, champion foosball player, and Kelsey's very good.
Starting point is 00:58:37 I got to get her over. Kelsey lives now in Minneapolis, but she tours all the time, so at some point she'll be in L.A. There's a foosball culture. It's too late. It's too late. Sorry, you're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right.
Starting point is 00:58:50 I must have my piece. Yeah, yeah. Now go ahead. Say it. Well, I went to a bar to play with Matt, because usually we just play at my house. And then this guy with long hair came up and was like, well, what are you playing? You're playing foos. And he was a, and he played completely differently to us.
Starting point is 00:59:07 He would trap the ball. Then he'd position all his guys. Like the game would sort of grind to a haul. Oh, no. And then he'd just do a move. Like, yeah. that score. But it wasn't very fun. No.
Starting point is 00:59:18 No, that's so annoying. Yeah. Yeah. I play foosball like an insane person. I was like, fium, fium, fium, I want to play with you. What? Well, I just,
Starting point is 00:59:31 fio, fia, fia, fia, fia, fia, fion, fia, fion, fia, fion, fion. Come on. That's how you play, because you're just like, come on. Yeah, let's play. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, what a podcast.
Starting point is 00:59:45 What a podcast. We did it again. We did it. We're always doing it. Yeah. I gotta look up my stand-up dates. Oh, yeah. I have eight text messages waiting on me.
Starting point is 00:59:58 All from Thomas. All from Thomas. Well, I know I just added a bunch of shows in coming up in Morganton, North Carolina, October 4th. Oh. But I also have coming up, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dayton, Ohio, Louisville, Madison, Wisconsin, Durham, Oakland, Bakersfield, and Los Angeles. Those are the shows in Denver.
Starting point is 01:00:37 I have two shows to plug. The first one, September 16th, I'm at Largo in L.A. I'm really going to put some prep into this one. We've got exciting guests. I'm going to do some music. It's going to be a really special one. And then September 19th, I'm at UCB doing improv with Matt and Atlanta Johnston. And that'll be live streamed as well.

But trust me, I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have to.
Starting point is 01:01:36 Steamboat Springs, basalt, and the list goes on. on and on forever because I'm a comedian. That's right. People are to say, when does your tour end? I'm like, it doesn't. It does not end. But I am, you know, as you know, I've scaled back to like a couple of shows a month and it feels good. Good.
