Pretty little episode.
Good morning and welcome to a pretty little episode.
I'm one of your handsome hosts, May Martin,
joined by.
I'm Fortunetubester.
Looking tanned, glowing.
I think what it is is, you know,
tread water, it's the new year,
new year, new me.
That's my motto for the year.
You coined that, right?
I coined, yeah, no one's ever said that before.
That's yours.
So I've started off strong with treading water.
So I got a little tan, I think,
because of being outside.
And I went to an event last night, so I had a lot of makeup on.
Oh, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's why my hair's still a little crazy.
No, you look great. You look like you just, like, you just, uh, like, stayed out all night,
so you still got the makeup and the hair.
Basically, I didn't stay out all night. I just didn't do a good job of taking it all off.
Oh, I see. Yeah, yeah. I didn't stay out all night. I just didn't do a good job of taking it all off.
I see.
That's the thing that when you get glammed up, I forget about the like, oh, I have to be diligent about taking it all off.
Yeah, your bedtime routine has to be on point.
I do need to work on a bedtime routine. Do you have a bedtime routine?
Do I ever?
Well, it depends if I'm self-destructing or not.
If I'm self-destructing, then I'm having a cigarette,
I'm watching porn, that's really bleak.
But if I am in a good place, then I'm using a toner,
and a cleanser, and a serum, and you know.
And porn.
And porn, and then I have a cigarette.
No, I'm not smoking this year, I've decided.
Oh, new year, new you?
New year, new me and I coined that one.
Sounds similar to yours but no,
I was on a plane yesterday though
and I try to take care of my skin after I go on a plane
and there was a little boy next to me.
I was like yeah, in my, you know,
seats for in twos, and it was me,
and this maybe eight-year-old boy.
I don't know, I guess his parents
were on the flight somewhere,
but he was like in a t-shirt and shorts,
and it was cold on the plane,
and he didn't have a book, he didn't watch TV.
He was just sitting there and sleeping
kind of with his head propped up on his elbow.
And I was like, and then I felt weird
because I sort of nudged him and I go,
hey, do you want a blanket or something?
Or like, you can put your chair backwards.
And he was like, no.
And I was like, okay.
And then it was driving me crazy
because it's like a three hour flight.
And I was like, get this kid a blanket.
So then I weirdly asked the flight attendant,
I go, could I get a blanket for the kid?
He was like, the kid was already sleeping though.
And then I kind of put this blanket on this kid.
And he was like, he clearly said he didn't want one.
So what am I doing trying to put a blanket on him?
I don't know.
I know what's best for you.
I felt so protective of him.
I was like, where are your parents?
Oh, that's so sweet though. I mean, that would be's best for you. I felt so protective of him. I was like, where are your parents? Aw, that's so sweet though.
I mean, that would be jarring to me.
I know.
Like what, I've only known kids
to be covered in snag.
Like, having an iPad in front of their face.
Yes, this guy was like a.
Sounds like emulation.
He was like a world weary businessman.
Like, just.
He's like, been this route many a times.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just at a conference.
I mean, he was wearing a very adult watch, I will say.
But he was definitely a child.
I was like, is this Benjamin Button?
But it is kind of refreshing to see an eight-year-old that's not addicted to entertainment
or games or whatever it is.
Yeah, totally.
He was wise.
I mean, yeah, what did I do?
I was like, I always have a book on my lap
that I'm like, I'm gonna read this.
And then I end up just watching some,
oh man, I watched one of the worst movies
I think I've ever seen, but I won't say what it is.
Oh really?
No one really knows it or anything, but it was just one of those things movies I think I've ever seen, but I won't say what it is. Oh really? No one really knows it or anything,
but it was just one of those things where you're like,
man, like this got made, you know?
This is crazy.
And knowing how hard it is to get movies made,
you're like, how does that happen?
Exactly, because it was basically the plot of Memento,
like guy has no memory, and he's solving a murder,
and then he's the murder.
Oh, yeah.
But it was like, oh, yes.
Well, yes.
For unknown movie.
Yeah.
That is the funny thing about being out here for so long now.
You can't really crap on movies, A, because you know how hard it was to get it made.
Yes.
And you probably know a bunch of people that were somehow involved in this
film. Either on the cast or crew.
And normally I'm super non-judgmental because I'm just like, well, it's a huge feat to
get something made, but this was so bad.
And normally on planes, movies are a little bit better for some reason. Like even a bad
movie.
Oh yeah, true, true.
Yeah, well yeah, I mean I watched the whole thing
glued to it.
I like saw watching a rom-com on a plane.
Yeah, I love it.
Me too.
Because I think it just opened you up somehow
with oxygen or whatever it is.
And you already love, you're very moved by flights
as a rule because you sing,
I'm leaving, I'm leaving on a jet plane.
See the tone there, and like you just woke up,
the tone there was absolutely beautiful.
It was like delicate.
I haven't even done my vocal warmups, Mae.
Yeah.
You posted a picture of jumping into a lake or something.
That looked really pretty.
Some would say jumping into a lake.
Some would say doing a handstand by the sea.
Oh, that's what it was?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't think, I must've watched it quickly
because I didn't see the handstand part.
Yeah, it was, I was doing a, oh no, you know what?
I did post a thing of jumping into a lake as well.
No, I went to Mexico and then I poached a couple legs.
I posted me doing a handstand by the sea, but I can't actually stay vertical. So I had to time
it with my friend. She had to take the photo just in the one moment where I was vertical.
So it looked like I was really holding. Nice. Yeah. Was it a good visit, a good break?
Yeah, I mean, I got a, maybe on a full, I'll get deep into it, because it was like Tulum,
Mexico, very spiritual.
I've been there.
It feels very like some energy vortex there.
It's a special place.
Yeah.
The like swimming holes and then the-
The cenotes.
The cenotes and then the knowledge
that the minds had about astrology and stuff.
That sounds pretty incredible.
It's incredible and I'm into aliens as you know.
Yeah, well you have to think about the experience you had
and when we're with Tig next time,
you gotta tell us more about it.
Yeah.
And yeah, because that's interesting. about it. Yeah. And, uh...
Yeah, because that's interesting.
Alright.
I'm excited. Should we get into a question?
Let's do it.
Hey, handsome. This is Ainsley.
Thank you for being my friends that I take on walks and car rides and commutes.
You just don't know it.
Aw.
My question for you all is, if you could have one animal
follow you around for the rest of your life, what would it be and why are you choosing that animal?
Oh god, that's good.
I mean, you have one.
I have one.
That answer came in my head immediately.
My biggie baby bear.
Oh my god.
If I could have him follow me forever, that would be a dream come true.
I don't know why dogs don't have longer lifespans, but that's for another day.
Yeah, to teach actually about love and loss.
I know. I've been home for the last month and I didn't work at all for the last two weeks, which is highly unusual
and not happened in a very long time
where I literally had nothing.
I love that for you.
That makes me feel calm.
Yeah. Yeah.
Like that makes my blood pressure go down,
just hearing, because you work harder than anyone
that I know, so that's nice.
Oh, thanks, bud.
Was he pumped to have you around? Yeah, he just, I just anyone that I know, so that's nice. Oh, thanks, bud. Was he pumped to have you around?
Yeah, I just was in a space
where I was being very reflective of life and everything.
So I was just a little bit,
I don't know how to describe it.
I vibrate kind of pretty high,
because there's a lot going on,
so I'm juggling a lot of stuff.
So my energy's probably up higher.
And I was just like down, down, down, down, down,
like thinking about life and thinking about everything.
And he just kind of, I feel like he just sort of
picked up on this energy and just was like
my little shadow for a while.
And I would take him everywhere I went.
Like if I ran errands, go to the park,
and it was just like really calming having,
I took him to our live show.
Yeah, he was a star.
Yeah, he's just, it really made a big difference
just having him with me.
Okay, well yeah, you have the perfect,
there's a word for like,
I'm thinking about the Golden Compass books
where there is like,
you know, every human has their demon or their spirit, their familiar. It's like,
they, you know, that's their animal that talks to them. Yours is definitely big,
like you guys are twin souls. Mine would be, because I've been doing these animal paintings,
right? That's right. I'm thinking a lot about animal energies and things.
And when I was in Mexico, I saw like this screaming monkey
and I kind of had a vision of the screaming monkey
and I did not like that.
I thought, okay, no monkeys.
That's too chaotic.
You're kind of sneaky a little bit too.
Yeah, I think I want something playful.
So I was gonna say like a sea otter,
but then I thought it would feel kind of like having a child.
Like that playful toddler energy
would be maybe exhausting after a while.
Like I kind of want something wise
that can also spoon me, you know,
like a leopard or something.
I'm gonna say a jaguar would be fun.
Cause if the jaguar is it, let's say it's a teen jaguar.
So when it can be adorable still and I can pet it,
but also not that I want teens to spoon me,
but like a jaguar.
Yeah, it's not like a full grown, okay, yeah, jaguar.
And it's kind of cool too, like it has a vibe about it.
Oh, so hot, yeah. Mysteruar. And it's kind of cool too, like it has a vibe about it. Oh, so hot, yeah.
Mysterious vibe.
Yeah.
And y'all could be in paintings together
where like you're shirtless and hugging the jaguar.
Oh my gosh.
Shirtless and hugging the jaguar,
imagine what that would feel like.
Yeah, very handsome.
That would feel so nice.
And you could play with it,
like that kind of wrestle and play fight.
Yeah.
I'm going to go Jaguar.
Yeah.
Hopefully it's tame and you know, I'll tame it.
Okay.
I believe it.
Some people just know they could save hundreds on car insurance by
checking Allstate first.
Like, you know, to check and make sure you're wearing a fascinating hat before attending a traditional English tea party.
Yeah, checking first is smart, so check Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds.

Biggie was spooning me this morning, so I get that.
So good.
He's little, so he can't properly do it, but I was on my side, so my legs are kind of pulled in and he went in the nook between my legs.
Oh my God.
And just like nestled in.
God that's pretty great.
That's incredible.
Oh, what a great question.
We're going biggie and jaguar.
Biggie would be less obtrusive in your day to day life.
The jaguar would get in the way
but I think people would have to deal.
It'd be hard to sneak a Jaguar into like dinner.
Yeah.
At a restaurant.
It would have to pretend it was my coat or something,
just like drape it around me.
Let's hear what Ainsley said.
My answer is a giraffe,
because they are wildly entertaining,
and they're beautiful and they're goofy
and somewhat practical,
because you'd have an extra mode of transportation
and you wouldn't get lost in a crowd.
And supposedly the answer to this question represents
what you look for in a life partner.
So I'm excited to hear what y'all say.
Thanks for being you.
That put a whole new element into it.
Oh my God.
Don't you think?
Yes, I think.
And I think it's really told me a lot about myself
particularly because I want that slightly dangerous power,
but that playfulness, and I said, I can tame it.
Which is like, is that what I want?
I'm looking for a wild jaguar that I can attempt to tame?
Jesus.
Well, you can't have a boring,
you definitely can't go boring.
You need a little more excitement.
So Ainsley wants a giraffe partner.
Yeah, if someone very tall.
Kind of a goofball.
Long neck.
I guess Biggie would be like safe.
Yeah, security.
Security, loyal, cuddly.
Yeah, I think that tracks.
That tracks.
Did you know that recently there was a baby giraffe born
with no spots, it's the first one ever recorded ever.
Whoa, may fact.
Yeah. Did not know that.
Yeah. Love it.
All right, let's get to our next one.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Yeah, why did I say mm-hmm?
That was so weird, mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
I just became a barista or something.
Hello, HandsomePod.
Hello, May.
Hello, Tig.
Hello, Fortune.
Hello, Thomas.
My name is Sam, a handsome little lay them
from Massachusetts, here to ask you,
aside from Handsome, of course,
what is your favorite podcast?
Ooh, Sam.
Good question.
By the way, they have a very enticing voice to me.
Mm-hmm. I agree.
I mean, I'm a sucker for anyone using my name.
Like, it's anyone going, well, Mae, I mean, you know, I'm like, oh, okay.
That video of Lois and Bram.
That blew up.
Blew up and your reaction to them saying your name
was part of that.
I really burst into tears, that was crazy.
So I believe that you get moved by someone saying your name.
I really do, yeah.
It like wakes me right up and puts me in the present moment.
Yeah.
Cause I know they're either mad at me or into me.
It's the tone in which they say it.
May?
Yeah.
May.
May.
Yeah.
Hey May.
Do you have favorite podcasts?
Um, yeah, I have a bunch.
Well, I, I think the first podcast I ever got into
was Professor Blastoff and I was in London.
Look at that.
Yeah, because it was the first podcast I listened to
where I like really laughed out loud
and felt like I knew them.
That was Tate's first podcast, I think, or second podcast.
Those were early days.
So long ago, this is like 2012 or something maybe.
And then I got really into serial and then kind of from then on,
it's like true crime for me.
I'm listening pretty much every day.
Did serial kind of kick off that true crime craze?
Definitely with podcasts, yeah.
Because it was that Adnan case, I believe.
Yes, Adnan Syed.
I can hear the theme song in my head still.
And her voice was so calming.
Her voice was amazing, yeah.
And I think all the ads were for MailChimp.
Oh yeah, they were all for MailChimp.
Yeah, yeah, you're so right, yeah.
Yeah, those were early, early podcast days of like,
well, this is interesting.
Yeah, did you, what about you?
Do you remember like having a podcast used to be
the butt of a joke with comics?
It was like, oh, you guys are gonna podcast?
Presidential nominees are going on there.
I know.
I was kind of a late adapter to podcasts, I think.
I remember the first one I kind of clocked as being popular
was My Favorite Murder.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
I was deep into that.
Because I'm friends with Karen Kulgarov and had known her for years doing stand-up.
And I was always like, God, Karen's like the funniest person I know.
Like every year I would be like, this person should be the most famous person in this show.
Like the talent coming out of this woman is like next level.
It's crazy.
And then all of a sudden, all that, you know,
I was touring and I would see around all these cities,
my favorite murder sold out.
And I was like, whoa, Karen's podcast is like popular.
This is like a thing.
And I started listening to it and loved it.
Yeah.
So I listened to that for a long time.
I haven't listened as much lately
just because I've been so busy.
Now I'm getting into the kind of self-help podcast world.
Mel Robbins I've been listening to.
Is Mel Robbins LetThem?
Yeah, Mel, she wrote that book LetThem.
I'm obsessed with Let Them.
2025 is Let Them for me.
Let Them is like, if people are-
I think a lot of people are adapting that.
Yeah, it's like if people are being-
Adopting, I mean.
Like fucking around or they don't wanna be nice to you,
just Let Them.
She did do an asterisk, I feel like, lately
because a lot of people were just kind of using it
to be like, fuck it, which is part of it.
But she then kind of did an addendum of like, let me.
So it's like, you can let them do whatever,
this, that, but then that means you also
have to walk away.
Do this, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it's not like, oh, just go do whatever the fuck you want.
No, it's like instead of trying to change or chase people,
just control your environment and your reactions to things.
Yeah, because you can let them go do whatever, I guess,
but that has consequences.
So it's like you both have to weigh what is worth it.
So yeah, just kind of doing more of that stuff lately.
I started Astaire Perel,
y'all got me into listening to some of her podcasts.
Isn't she amazing?
Yeah.
Yeah, she's amazing.
And I got into Call Chelsea Peretti
when she first started that podcast
because I loved, I felt like it was very aspirational
for me because I loved that she would just hang up
on callers, like she would be so mean to people
and it was so like cathartic to listen to and funny
and like the people calling would just like want her
to be mean to them and I loved it.
And I love Sarah Silverman's podcast
and I used to listen to Anna Faris' podcast a lot.
I thought that was fair.
There's an episode with Alice and Janie
that was really funny where they did improv.
I feel like Ana's also was one of the,
not early adapters of podcasts,
but one of the early ones to get a lot of success.
Yeah, but if anyone has recommendations
for bingeable true crime series,
especially where there's a resolution at the end, that would be great.
Like Shit Town was amazing, or Dr. Death.
I think I like anything that's like,
I like true crime, I like comedy,
when people are making me laugh and some self help
situations where I'm learning something.
I have one, if anyone is feeling really depressed and lost,
there's one by Michael Mead called Living Myth.
And it's like little bite-sized episodes
where this amazing guy, Michael Mead,
who used to be like a prisoner of war,
and he is into mythology.
And he interprets the modern world
through the lens of mythology to help us understand it. And it's really calming, and he interprets the modern world through the lens of mythology to help us understand it.
And it's really calming and he goes,
welcome to the Living Myths podcast,
in which the shifting, changing world we live in
is looked at from a mythic perspective.
Anyway.
Oh, nice.
That definitely sounds up your alley.
Well, there you go.
Yeah, those are all great.
I just listened to one about attachment styles.
Oh, my God. Do you think you're avoidant or anxious or both?
I might be fearful.
Fearful, avoidant?
Maybe.
But I go in between secure.
I think I'm secure and have a little bit of that.
I go both depending on if my life's in a good place.
Yeah. I know that's the thing about once you self-diagnose with an attachment style,
it's like, well, these things can change too. And it's dependent on the situation you're in.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, because I've been very secure as well.
Yeah.
It's interesting. Anyway, super interesting.
We'll see what Sam said. For me, aside from Handsome, of course, my favorite podcast is Ologies with Ali Ward.
I think May especially, if you don't know of this one, I think you would really enjoy
it.
There is so much interesting information, lots of cool facts that you can learn about
the world around us to keep in your back pocket or write down
in a notebook to present to your future dates. But definitely one to give a listen to.
I just wrote that down. All it is. I'm going to listen to it. That's amazing.
Yeah. Thanks, Sam.
Yeah. I welcome any recommendations as well because anytime I travel now, I love music and I always
love music, especially when I want to just like be light and airy. But most of my travels,
I'm listening to a podcast now. Really? Yeah. So yeah, hit us up with some recommendations.
Yeah, especially if they have facts that that would be great. Well, this is a great, this
is a great time as always. Yeah, absolutely.
It's always interesting to hear people's questions
and I learned something new about my handsome host every day.
Dada, please submit your questions
to speakpipe.com slash handsome pod.
Keep them coming.
Especially, I really liked the reveal
that the animal we chose was what we wanted to partner.
I like those personality test type things
where you're like, describe a box, it's in a field.
And then you're like, well, the box is your inner child
and the field is your mother and you're, what?
Yeah, because we don't know what questions are being asked.
So when we hear it, it's our brain just immediate,
like what is the first thing that's coming to our brain?
Yeah, free association.
And I do think that says something about, yeah,
more than, like there's something subconsciously
telling us this thing, but we don't know why.
Thank you, everyone.
Yeah, we hope everybody has an awesome weekend.
Thank you for listening to this pretty little episode
and catch us on our full
handsome episode on Tuesday and keep, like May said, submitting your questions,
get your handsome merch and keep it pretty handsome.
Handsome is hosted by me, Fortune Feimster, Tig Notaro, and Mae Martin.
