Starting point is 00:00:38 of the handsome pod Pretty little episode Welcome to the handsome pod I am your host Fortune Feinster And I am your host May Martin And Thomas is here too
Starting point is 00:00:54 Hello We're keeping a handsome Always I'll wear my handsome sweat pants all weekend. Oh, you did? I love them. They're my favorite. When it starts to get chilly outside, it's time for my handsome pants. God, I like when it gets a little chilly. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I've been playing a lot of Fuzball late into the night and wearing a jacket to do it. I don't know how I'm bringing up Fusball in reference to, like, I'm shoehorning it in.
Starting point is 00:01:22 I'm fine. It's fine. You love Fusball. I love it. And I started watching a documentary about the history of foosball and it's fascinating yeah yeah it was in the second world war soldiers went to Europe and it was huge in Europe in like France and stuff and they yeah so they came over it and brought it over here and then and then it's like video killed the
Starting point is 00:01:44 radio star once once video game machines came in yeah it just like eliminate all those buildings became arcades and anyway oh wow yeah well look at that main pact I was it was my my friend Matt who lives with me. It was his birthday yesterday. So obviously we're playing some foos. And then this trash talk character came out of me that was kind of like Debbie, the hairdresser.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Because every time he'd lose a point, I go, oh, and on his birthday too, oh, isn't it a shame the birthday boys? It was so, I don't know where it came from. It was so cruel. Did it get him off his game? Yeah, it really rattled. There you go. Yeah. He'd be. He'd be, It's me every time. So the only way I can get in his head is trash talk. How are you? I'm good. I'm gearing up for Thanksgiving will be next week.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Yeah. Now, I know, obviously, that's not a holiday you grew up with. I forgot. Now that you're in the States, do you do something for Thanksgiving? Well, we have it in Canada. It's just in a different month, right? Thomas is, is it? Yeah, it's in October.
Starting point is 00:03:00 It's in October. And usually I do something for it, but maybe not this year. But, yeah, yeah, I think I should find somewhere and do like a Friendsgiving. Yeah, I love, Thanksgiving. Thanks even is my favorite holiday. Yeah, because there's no pressure to give gifts. And I love that. I don't mind, because I don't mind buying people gifts.
Starting point is 00:03:20 I want people, you know, I want to be generous for sure. I just am not always like, I just don't always know what to buy people. So Christmas is a lot of pressure. Birthdays is way too much pressure because I have a good friend's birthday soon and I'm just like I have no idea what to get. Yeah, for Thanksgiving, I'm excited because in the last, gosh, since pre-COVID, I have not had a holiday with my family. No way. Yeah, I realized that. I had seen my mom on Christmas Eve.
Starting point is 00:03:55 but just her and then had flown out on Christmas Day we just started doing other things and now a kid that I'm it's me I'm gathering my family I rented a house in my hometown and everybody's
Starting point is 00:04:17 all the family's coming because you know with my mom being sick I'm just trying to make things a little more special when I can. We're also planning an 80th birthday party for her in the new year. Oh, my God. Yeah, you've got to make some memories and just like... Yeah, I'm trying to make memories because, you know, hopefully she's around for a long time,
Starting point is 00:04:37 but I just don't want to, you know, not do cool things with everybody when we can. Yeah. Well, Thanksgiving will be fun. How many people are you going to have? It'll be like 13 of us. Fun. Not all staying at this house, but. but eating together.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Yeah, fun. Yeah. Turkey fucks me up. Does it? You're one of those people that, like, gets super tired? Yeah, but maybe I'm just one of those people that makes a big deal out of it. Like, oh, I've got a turkey. I'm tired.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Yeah. I don't feel like it does too much to me. I like to, I don't go too crazy on the Thanksgiving food. I, like, eat a plate of it, and then I go for leftovers later that. night. Leftovers are fucking good. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Yeah. All right. Well, I don't, I don't, I, that makes me think I should host something up at my place. I should make it a thing. I know. Well, you got the place now. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Friendsgiving is really fun too. When I was in my 20s, I had two roommates and my roommate Steve and I, who I just saw in Atlanta, he and I used to host Friendsgivings at our house. And those are some of my favorite memories I've ever had because I was too broke to fly home for Thanksgiving. It was too close to Christmas. Yeah. And I would fly home for Christmas.
Starting point is 00:05:58 So the family would be Christmas. And then Friendsgiving. And we would all, like, Stephen, I would be in charge of the turkey and drinks. And everybody else would bring the side dishes. Yeah. It's good. It's pretty fun. I think you should do it.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Have you ever heard of a frozen Charlotte? What's that? It's like they used to hide a little porcelain doll inside of a cake. And then if you get the frozen, in Charlotte, you're, I guess, the king. I've heard of the king cake, which is a similar thing. It's a New Orleans thing. Yeah, I don't think we do enough hiding things in food.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I mean, I would be too nervous to break a tooth. Yeah, that's true. I don't want to bite down on anything. Yeah. Okay, I won't prank you. All right. I appreciate it. Well, let me know if you end up doing something.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Yeah. Should we see what people want to know? Mm-hmm. Hello, Handsoms. This is Abby from Southern Illinois. And my question for you, as we are getting closer to the holiday season, what is the gift that was your most favorite to give someone else? Like the one that you were so excited to give them that maybe you gave it early or you almost let the secret spill a million times. Ooh. Oh. That's good. I mean, I have a, my friend Joe who wrote Feel Good with me. He and I, I think I've talked about this before that he did this painting called Zorg. And it's just this really grotesque face. And he just did it one night when we were hanging out and painting and forgot about it. But it's become like a, like I had t-shirts made. And then I mailed them to his roommates. And so, those presents are always my favorites like on on his birthday he went to the pub and they had prearranged that like the bartender was wearing a zorg t-shirt yeah things like that but also recently my i have a friend whose whose mom is actually very sick and she's been really stressed and
Starting point is 00:08:05 um so i got her i like got her in Airbnb really close to the hospital and her parents house and that yeah that felt good because it was like practical and helpful yeah that's really sweet yeah what about you um i was trying to think like what present has stood out oh my gosh it's like always the more personal ones right but right then that gets harder to do yeah there's one that came to mind but i'm not going to share that one um okay uh i did i did date someone who um i had never really bought like a nice um i had not been in a ton of serious stuff and this and not that this was like super serious
Starting point is 00:08:49 but I really like this person and I bought her a nice coat and my friend my best friend helped me pick it out and I was so proud of this because it was like classy. Yeah. And I just had never given a
Starting point is 00:09:05 woman a nice present like this before. Yeah. And I was just so pumped about it and and I think And she loved it, and I think we broke up like a month later, but she still has, she told me she still has the coat. Really, she still rocks it?
Starting point is 00:09:26 She still has it and loves it. So that makes, it was not a waste. It makes me feel good that she still enjoys it and that it's a fond memory for her too. Yeah, that's nice and romantic. And it's hard buying clothes for people. Oh my, I never, ever, ever do it. And it was just something that happened. happened to work and my friend nailed it with that one and yeah it just made me very like I felt
Starting point is 00:09:52 like an adult for the first time of like, look at me. Yeah, nice present for someone. Yeah, that's nice. Yeah. It'd be nice to get someone a puppy or something, but that's a big risk. You have to really know that. Yeah. They want that. You have to know that they want that and you would have to know like a lot of like this is the breed and this is the and they're up for it. And but man, that that would be a tough present by someone. I also, I've heard you're not supposed to buy people art. Oh. Because art is so subjective. Oh, really? Not to say you can't have like, I've had people had like pictures like painted of like Biggie or something. That's adorable, but just like
Starting point is 00:10:29 art in general. Okay. I'm just going over all the times I've given people art and then realizing I've never seen it in their home. Well, because yeah, it's like you might think it's like amazing. Another person's like, yeah. Yeah. But you never know. Some people might love your, your taste in art as well. Some people loved Lala Land and I hated it. Yeah. And to each their own. Let's hear Abby's answer. My answer for that is I actually have two, both going to the same person, my wife. The first would be one year for her birthday. I threw her a surprise taskmaster birthday. May I'm sure you appreciate that. And I actually sculpted her a life size trophy of Greg Davis. head. The second gift would be that I actually, for Christmas this year, got her surprise tickets to go see Fortune in Indianapolis in January. Oh, my gosh. And if you guys air this before Christmas, you guys will actually get to be the ones to tell her about the
Starting point is 00:11:34 surprise, which would be kind of fun too. Surprise, surprise. Thank you guys so much and stay handsome. You were coming to Indianapolis, my friend. Oh, my gosh. exciting that's amazing like experience gifts are always the best so i love them let's just encourage people to buy comedy tickets all the time i will say they and i don't just say this because there are shows but it every person that has come to my show who has gotten it as a gift is like this was the best gift oh that's nice because you're with usually your friend or your partner you know on a date and it's and if it's a friend they've had a blast with each other if it's a date they feel connected to their partner they're laughing it's fun i think it's such a great gift yeah it is yeah and
Starting point is 00:12:23 there's a nice i don't i think your shows are the same but there's like a nice community vibe there people are friendly and there's i don't know people make friends in the lineup for the bathroom and stuff yeah yeah it is like such a good vibe yeah so you'll you'll leave if you come to any of our shows you'll be very happy. Yeah, that's a good surprise. I can see, and my taskmaster trophy is there, the big head. That's right. And that I have a, I know a lot of people who do taskmaster themed parties, because it's so, it's so fun. Yeah. Yeah, there's a board game, I think. Yeah. That's awesome. Thanks, Abby. Yeah. You know what's smart? Checking Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance.
Starting point is 00:13:08 You know what's not smart? not checking that you packed your tripod before agreeing to make a video of your nephew's school play. Nobody warned you that the play was two hours long with no intermission and your arms are getting a little tired. Yeah, check in first is smart. So check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary, subject to terms, conditions, and availability. Allstate North American Insurance Company and Affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Should we hear another one? Mm-hmm. Hello, TIG, May, and Fortune. My name is Sam, a handsome little they, them, from Hamilton, Ohio. First of all, I absolutely love the podcast. Second of all, Fortune, I'm coming to see you in Cincinnati in January, and I cannot wait. Very cool. My question for you guys, I'm not particularly a Disney fan, but I recently posted on social media a picture of myself in a costume as a Disney character.
Starting point is 00:14:02 And a lot of my fellow non-binary friends were like, oh my God, that's my favorite character, too. So I'm particularly interested in May's answer on this, but I'd love to hear from all three of you guys. Who is your favorite Disney character and why? Thanks and love the show. Well, I really identify with Lumiere, the candle. And usually in Disney movies, because it's so gendered, the old ones at least, that I grew up with, usually there's some like inanimate object character or an animal of some kind that I relate to heavily. So yeah, okay, because Lumier is kind of a.
Starting point is 00:14:36 non-binary icon in my mind and a good singer great singer so warm so welcoming guest be our guest who else there's Abu the monkey from Aladdin
Starting point is 00:14:51 yeah I always like this the like the characters that aren't involved with the love plot same because they're they're the fun ones like in the Little Mermaid the crab what's his name oh Sebastian
Starting point is 00:15:06 Yeah, you see her floating there along the way She don't got a lot to say Something about her And you don't know why But you're dying to try you want to kiss a girl Oh, you really know it Oh my God, yeah Yeah
Starting point is 00:15:26 Yeah, flounder as well I guess that's a little boy character But yeah, yeah, the crab Yago, the sidekicks are the funniest always The sidekicks are, in the Lion King, the Warthog. Yeah, the Warthog and Zazu, the two can. Well, I've never seen a king or beast with quite so little head. I want to be your mighty kings.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Enemies beware. Never seen a, that's a little hair. Do you know who did the voice of Adult Simba? No. Well, I'll tell you. Tell me. Matthew Broderick. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:16:07 Yeah. Good little trivia there. That is. There's so many good songs in that one. It means no worries for the rest of your days. Okay, I guess we need to do Disney karaoke one night. Yes, we do. Like little musical theater kids.
Starting point is 00:16:21 In a whole new world. Come on. Oh, yeah, come on. And then Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Ursula's a gay icon. All the villains are pretty gay. You poor unfortunate soul. Yeah, and Flotsam and Jetsam, her little eels.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Mm-hmm. Gosh, Jafar is pretty gay. Yeah, I'm going to go with Lumiere, though, in terms of gender identity. That's who I identify with. Mine's Sebastian from Wilmermaid. Yeah, I like that. But our new, I mean, my soon-to-be favorite is Nibbles from Zootopia 2. That's going to be my favorite, too.
Starting point is 00:16:57 That's your character's name? It's my favorite character in Zootopia 2, and Zootopia 2 comes out. I can't remember if it's November 26th or 29th, but. soon it's soon and you got all your handsome hosts in it and all of you get all of us are in it and my friend uh sent me a picture his kid went to pop mart and there was already a um a figurine figure the action figure thing of my nibbles character what already uh huh that's insane i was like oh my gosh this is so cool i'm still hoping that we're going to be at the premiere together. I know. I'm trying to get
Starting point is 00:17:37 off work. Yeah. But yeah. Should we hear Sam's answer? Yeah. My answer is Peter Pan. There's just something about his energy and his zest for life and his enthusiasm of like being playful and silly that I just really love. I'm very playful
Starting point is 00:17:53 and silly myself, so very fun. And yeah, apparently a lot of other non-binary folks love Peter Pan as well. So there you go. Thanks guys. Yeah. I can Completely for, of course, Peter Pan, I want to be so badly. And, yeah, there's definitely like a queer vibe about Peter.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Like a sort of cheeky little. Yeah. Yeah. I can totally see you playing Peter Pan. I would love to play Peter Pan. That would be fun. I'd want to play him as kind of a rebel. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Like a little tortured. Yeah. Let's hear another one. Hello, May, Fortune, and Tig. This is Mira. I am a handsome listener, pretty little lady, originally from Durham, North Carolina. And I am a big fan of the pod and you three individually. And I am sending it a message today asking for some advice. Yes. I have just graduated college. I am 23 and I have moved 7,000 miles away from my home on the East Coast to Japan, where I'm working my first real job.
Starting point is 00:19:01 And I am coming to terms with the fact that I think what I want to do with my life is do creative things, art things, theater things. And I'm 23 and life is a bit messy. And it's just like, where do I start? Like, how do you start? You know you're supposed to do something, but it's scary and you need a job and you have to be funny. And my time is running out. But yeah. So how do you start?
Starting point is 00:19:25 That's my question. Oh, man. That's a great question. How cool that you're in Japan and like, yeah. You know, finding yourself. And I guess I'm assuming that what you did in college isn't in the arts. And this is like a revelation. I think, I mean, it depends what aspect of the arts.
Starting point is 00:19:42 But for me, like, I got a job in a box office of a comedy venue, working in the box office. And just went to see stuff as much as I can. So I was in the, like, immersed in the world of it. Like getting an adjacent day job, you know, so that you're around it. Yeah. That could be good. What about you? What do you think?
Starting point is 00:20:02 Yeah, I mean, well, it's always helpful having a focus. Like, if you know, like, this is the field I want to be in. I'm not sure exactly how to get there, but, like, this is the goal. It's, I think it's harder when you, it's like, I don't know what I want to do. Then it's like, where do you even begin? So I think narrowing it down in that way is good. Yeah. Yeah, getting an adjacent job is helpful.
Starting point is 00:20:26 I was an entertainment journalist first, and I knew, like, this is not what I want to do, but I'm in the business talking to people doing the thing I want to do. Yeah. So I can like pick their brain. I can learn more about the business in a way where like I understand it, but I don't have the opportunity yet to be in it. But this is a way to like be around it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Yeah. And then I took a lot of classes to help get better in that field. Yeah. Classes are you meet people that end up becoming your peers and colleagues and collaborators like you meet your cohort and you could still have a day job for a bit but be taking classes and transition in because if you took some sort of class in the arts you know maybe like oh that person ends up knowing this person oh this art company is looking for this or this person's needs help with their project I mean then you're meeting other people that
Starting point is 00:21:23 are like like minded in that world and you just never know where that will lead yeah and I think, like, I think acting is particularly hard because you're, it's reliant on other people giving you work and auditioning and stuff. But some of the other ones, like I, I, you can make your own, you can like go to a pub and say, I want to book the venue one night in six months and then advertise and have a night. Like, you can be proactive and make your own stuff. Yeah. So maybe that's, is that advice? I think so. Yeah. And also just set, I think just setting goals in general, with specific goals you want to hit can help you work toward something.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Yeah. And find a buddy who also wants to get into it and then you guys can go and see stuff together and go and because sometimes if you're like, oh, I want to do comedy, so I'm going to go see a bunch of shows. It's intimidating, just hanging out afterwards by yourself and trying to meet people.
Starting point is 00:22:21 But if you go with someone, you can tag team people. For sure. Love it. I love it. Yeah. Also, you're young. Enjoy Japan. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:22:30 I don't think there's any pressure to figure it out yet. No, man. You got to pay your bills, obviously. That's, you know. Yeah. And honestly, you don't get to necessarily make money right away doing the thing you want to do. Sometimes you have to do just a job to pay the bills while still having that goal of these other things. Sometimes life just happens.
Starting point is 00:22:55 So just be patient with yourself. Yeah, big time. Cool. That was lovely. It was lovely. We want people to keep sending us questions, advice, whatever you want. SpeakPipe.com slash handsome pod. Don't forget to get some handsome merch for these holidays coming up.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Yeah. And some tickets to shows. Maybe going on tour. I'm on tour. Please. Hit ticks doing a bunch of shows. So, yeah. And maybe write a little card for Thomas too.
Starting point is 00:23:24 That's right. Write a little card for Thomas. And I hope everyone has a great holiday. We'll talk to people before then. in our regular episode, but yeah, just a time to be thankful, and I'm thankful for you, and I'm thankful
