Starting point is 00:00:57 to change the name through from I know what you did last summer to slash slash or what is it hook hook hook hook slash slash it's like morse code but for angry fishermen who are um hell bent on exacting revenge on teenagers oh my god it's a niche focus group but they're out there I love it yeah they're there oh they're out there they're out there there's four of those guys be safe they are out there prepare your ears human Happy, Sad, Confused begins now. Hey, guys, it's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Today's main event, we have a first-time guest on the podcast. Very popular young actress. I'm so thrilled to welcome to the show for the first time. It's Madeline Klein. If you have an Outer Banks fan in your life, if you're an Outer Banks fan, if you're OBX, obsessive, what's the term? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:01:54 If you're an Outer Banks person, this one is for you, but also if you just love to kind of track entertaining, fun, charismatic, cool, young stars, you're going to dig this. Madeline is a live wire, a fun, fun conversation. So thrilled to have her. Her new movie is, I Know What You Did Last Summer. It opens next week in theaters. That is the main event on Happy Say I Confused today.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Briefly, I'll mention, as always, if you want early access to this and all our episodes, if you want bonus materials, you know what to do by now. Patreon.com. slash happy, say I confused, is your friend for all things. Josh Horowitz, as I said, early access, discount codes, heads up on live events. We do a ton of live events. So check out what we do over there. It helps us do more over here, patreon.com slash happy, say I'm confused. All right, some brief context for this conversation with Madeline. Madeline swung into New York for like literally a day, and I'm so thrilled. She did make some time for me and my little old show. I've done a few
Starting point is 00:02:54 things with Madeline, especially around Glass Onion, if you remember, she was so great in that film. And kudos to Madeline for, like, you know, not only getting that plum roll in Ryan Johnson's Knives Out sequel, but more than holding her own against the likes of Daniel Craig, Janelle Monet, Catherine Hahn, Edward Norton. I mean, the list goes Dave Batista. The list goes on and on and on. And she was so fantastic in that. And she really registered for me in that film. And then I know, I know the OBX fans out there I know you're out there I know you love Madeline and I get it
Starting point is 00:03:29 she is so fun she is of all of energy she is yeah it was kind of a wild weird random conversation but I love those I loved riding the wave with Madeline Klein I feel like she made me feel 20 years younger or older I'm not sure
Starting point is 00:03:46 I definitely felt old but I also felt like okay this is my cheat code for what a 27 year old young woman feels and talks about nowadays. So if you're not 27 and female, perhaps this will give you a clue as to the mindset of a 27-year-old young woman nowadays in terms of pop culture references
Starting point is 00:04:04 and just the way they speak, et cetera. God, do I sound old right now talking? I do. I'm going to stop talking. Okay, so Madeline Klein, main guest on Happy, say I confused. Of course, she is the star of Outer Banks. She is also the star of, I know what you did last summer.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Yes, it is the sequel. It's weird that has the same name. I'm going to say it just like. scream why do you call it the same thing i don't know take it up with someone else not me anyway i know what you did last summer opens next week in theaters it is madeline it's uh chase we wonder who i also adore um and then it has some of the legacy actors from the original including freddie prince junior um and uh not sir michelle geller because she died in the first one but oh of course Jennifer love hewitt amazing so a nice thing for those of us that grew up in the 90s
Starting point is 00:04:53 Okay, enjoy this conversation. It's a wild one. Me and Madeline Kline. Madeline, it's official. You're on the podcast. We're on the pod officially. Thank you for doing this. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:05:05 You're in the middle of a lot of things. You've got the whole the OBX thing is back. The OVX show's back. The vote shows back. And you're sneaking away for basically 24 hours of press, if that. Pretty much. You snuck me in. I appreciate you.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Of course. You snuck me in. You know what else I snuck in? Fashion icon, Madeline Klein. What do you sell in here? What are you trying to give off? What's the vibe? Maybe shrooms.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I'm like a secret shroom dealer. Secret shroom dealer. Yeah. Okay, good, good. She's a woman of many talents. Yeah, yeah. Like, where am I going? Probably Thai Village for dinner.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Okay. And then probably just, you know, doing some drop-offs. Yeah. afterwards. Okay. And then I have a gala. You have a gala. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:55 That's how you roll. That's what my outfit. Oh, you should have told me it was for the podcast. Oh, okay. Oh, okay. You were happy sat confused. You're like, get out the ball gowns, get out high fashion. Yes, it is giving happy sad confused.
Starting point is 00:06:08 All these like different elements happening here. That's the confused. It's like, wait, what? Yes, and then the nail polish, sad. What's the tattoo? Is that new? No, I got it last summer. Um.
Starting point is 00:06:20 And it's the cure lyrics, or lyrics to a song, but I just, I don't want to, like, I want people to figure it out. Okay, okay. You know, like, maybe if there's one day on my wiki feet, there's a high-res picture of my feet that ends up, maybe then they'll... Do you maintain your own wiki feet, or do you let someone else, is that like an open source? How does that work? Yeah, that's an open source. Okay. Because I think that's probably the most unbiased.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Right, you want to, truth. You don't want to skew your own vision of your feet. No, no, no. I did not expect the podcast to start that way. Let's get the important stuff out of the way. You are spreading a good word on, I know what you did last summer. Yes, yes. Which I haven't had an opportunity to see yet.
Starting point is 00:06:59 They haven't shown it to me, so I can only assume it's the best movie ever made. I've seen the first 45 minutes. Okay. And I can, I can say that it is the best movie ever made. Knife, knife, hook, hook. Is that all the script is, just this knife, knife, hook up? Slashy stab. That's the direction on it.
Starting point is 00:07:20 More slashy stab on this one, Madeline. Yes, especially with like this. Yes, that is, it is the slashy stabby ever. Wow, congrats on that. Thanks. So, you know, I'm 95 years old. So my relationship to the original, yeah, 95, wish me a happy birthday please. Wait, who did your...
Starting point is 00:07:40 Yeah, it's oil the way. I'm already planning my first. All the skin creams. What was I going to say? Oh, so I have a deep relationship to that first film. I was a sentient human being. I was very much the right age. You were not alive.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I hate you. Wait, no. Oh, no. I was only, my mom was about five months away. You were getting there. You were almost there. So relationship to the original? Does every kid nowadays still see, I know what you did last summer?
Starting point is 00:08:08 I think it's one of those, I mean, it is like a cultural zeit guys. It's crazy. And it is a classic. Even if I think people haven't seen it, I think they know of it. Yeah. Like you say, the slashy, slashy, hook, hook, fisherman. Everyone knows that. And, and I know what you did last time we walked, so it's cream could run.
Starting point is 00:08:30 So we're like the originals. And what about, look, we have, we have Jennifer Love Hewitt back here. We have Freddie. Freddie Prince. Freddie Prince, Jr. We have Sarah Michelle in proximity, at least. She paid a visit. Yes.
Starting point is 00:08:46 The whole family. Yeah, I know. So, I mean, Sarah Michelle means a lot to every young person. She means a lot to me. Right. Oh, my God. So, like, one of the first times I met her, because they, you know, they just brought the whole family down. It was an Australian vacation.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I thought I turned that off. You're good. They brought the whole family down for an Australia vacation. And we were, I think, I can say this. You can. So my character, Danica, has, I decided to build into her lore that she's really, really insecure about her shoulders. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:29 And Lisa Renna is her idol because Lisa Renna has a quote says, I love my shoulders, I love the way my shoulders look in this top. And I feel like that's one of Danica's affirmations. Yep. She's like, I'm safe from Benson Boone. My shoulders are incredible. You know what I mean? And my branches are always emerging.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And so I was telling Freddie and Sarah about this because the whole conversation had happened the night before. And Sarah got me a cameo from Lisa Renna, but not from the app. Like an actual. It's the most incredible movie ever. It's so, it's pretty long. Yeah, on the cameo app, that probably would have in thousands of dollars. You got, yeah. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:10:15 What you said? Can you tease a little bit? Should I find it? Yeah. Okay. We'll do it after me. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:21 But I'll, yes, I will show. I think she'll be okay with it. Yeah. Yeah. If I know Lisa, I think she'll be fine. She's the best. She's so fucking hot. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:10:30 So on the Sarah front, were you a Buffy girl? I mean, did you grow up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer? You know, I, no, I didn't. I haven't. That's okay. No. I wasn't, I think I was a little too scared. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Uh-huh. I was an office girl. You were an office girl. This is your first horror though, right? Technically, like full-on horror. Yeah. Full-on. Yeah, yeah. That's a right of passage for any young actor. I think so. Right? But especially one like this. Yeah, if you're gonna do it.
Starting point is 00:10:59 If you're gonna do it. Do it right. Slashy slap. Huck, hook, hook, knife, knife. Had you been up for, like, horror things before? Has every young actor go up for the screen movies nowadays? I hadn't been up for a scream, no. But there's been, like, there's been a few more indie horror, which also great, because a lot of times I feel like there, there, those, the more indie films are a little bit more, it's about a conversation, like a deeper conversation. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like the Ariaster of crazy stuff, like, yeah, yeah, yeah. But also really hard to be in that kind of, like, headspace every day on set.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Oh, yeah. Um, it's a choice, but this was like, I think, I was like, okay, well, if we're going to do it, this is a great one. So saying like this, you can, you can have fun with it. Like, you can commit to it. You can do the Lisa Rina back story. Yes. But you can also, like, detach. You don't have to live this life when you go home.
Starting point is 00:11:59 Right. Um, and I would love to do something like that, super deep, but that is prep. Yeah. So what are the skills that you already had, do you think that, like, equipped you for this and what skills didn't you have? like you've done the physical stuff obviously but this is a different kind of thing I would imagine or you tell me like what what didn't you have going into this what did you have going into this um what i did have going into this was um um fade blockers and and uh the time of my life like it was just so fun
Starting point is 00:12:36 yeah it was really truly fun i enjoyed every second of it i mean danica also she is camp which is just like I mean it's just fun like I don't know I'm having the time of my life yeah like we're literally getting chased around but Danica's like she's in her own movie she's new no no Danica believes that she is her life is a movie oh I love it yes she is the main character amazing yes and this also feels I don't know like how you're selecting your parts or not but it feels like you're selecting them based on like I want to go on an adventure somewhere yes oh totally because everything shoots in Europe and Australia you're traveling so like you're doing it
Starting point is 00:13:21 you're having some great adventures it seems so much fun so this was Australia and again probably a bunch of new friends I would imagine obviously in your age group so like a whole bunch of new people and it feels like you're just at the other end of the earth doing your own thing yeah I think it was we had some really really special fun nights um all together. I mean, it was a very quick filming schedule. We had about six weeks in Australia, which is fast to get everything done. And by golly, we did it. Enough of harsh language, okay? I know.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Yeah. Bleep that out. That would be really funny. Bye, beep. Bye, yeah. And, but yes, it was really fun. We went to some beautiful beaches from our like for our early rap slash like my birthday party we went and we got a huge suite at the crown hotel and we just had a night ever Santa was there Santa was there Santa was there the Santa I do think like we couldn't if we paid him enough I do think he would have started stripping oh man this is the official Santa you think with enough money you're saying the real Santa would have actually strip. I think he was, I think that was actually Santa. Wow, I believe in your magic.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I know, I think so. I don't not believe in the magic. Yeah. But also, it was funny because Gabriette saw him first. And, and she immediately, like, she's like, oh my God, take my phone. And she's, he's passing out candy canes, as Santa does. And she's, and has, like, a silver, metallic bikini. She puts her hair over and she's, oh, my God. She's, oh, my God. Take my phone. And she's, he's, he's, he's, oh, he's, like immediately starts going into a full-blown photo shoot yeah sexy Santa shoot I've never seen anything like it how did Santa handle the he loved it yeah of course he did knowing Santa yeah and he gave us a candy game I'm not gonna comment on that I'm gonna move on as mentioned you just literally started
Starting point is 00:15:32 Outer Banks the final season like you're like day one was yeah a couple days yeah day one yeah a couple Monday so how I mean it's pretty sure to say how's it feel but like How does it feel? Like, are you, is it hitting all of you yet? I think, yes, it's hitting all of us. But it's so funny because we've been in the thick of it for six or seven years.
Starting point is 00:15:54 And there have been time. I mean, it's not, it kicks our asses. It's a tough show to shoot. It's very physically demanding. Well, I always come back and I'm like, oh, fuck, I forgot how much stamina. Yeah. I you need to have to keep up with this show and the elements that we shoot in but it's so funny because sometimes we go back and we're like yeah I'm tired yeah oh dear and this season I think because we realize it's our last time you're trying to enjoy it you know now it's like oh my god that our very first day back it would it was our last time it was our last time you're trying to enjoy it you know now it's like oh my god that our very first day back it was our last
Starting point is 00:16:40 last first day. Right, everything's going to be the last. Everything's the last. I think that's what's hitting everyone. So everyone has this really, really incredible attitude of gratitude. It is like Sesame Street. Or, no, sorry, Mr. Rogers. Yes, an attitude of gratitude. I like that. Yes. So did, have you read all the scripts yet? No. No, you never get them all at once, right? What do you know? How How much do you know about the, do you know how this whole ends up? We have five scripts where I've only read one. Okay. So we were, Chase and I were shooting our first scene back and I was like, Chase, what happened
Starting point is 00:17:21 before this? So he was, he was giving me spark notes. He was giving me like the bullet points. Key codes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, okay, got her, go, okay, and I shit, and go, and go, and then I guess it worked. It was kind of like, it reminded me of, like, a cute card or like having a thing in your ear. And I got a great compliment that day from her director. I was like, hmm.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Yeah. Well, the people that can't see it, but you have a little IFB in your ear right now that's feeding you every answer to this podcast. This is all scripted. Actually a clone. Yeah. This is AI, Madeline. Sarah's still pregnant. JJ's still dead.
Starting point is 00:18:01 These things are still, these are still canon? Yes. Yeah, every, all still canon. It's funny because, like, people were asking me if the baby is dead or are still alive. And I was like, no. And then Netflix was like, no spoilers. I'm like, what do you think? I'm not, that's not a spoiler.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Right. But it's also really funny because I met, I actually, I was here a couple weeks ago, and I met a little boy who was a big fan of the show. And he's like, but he thought I was pregnant in real life. Sure. and um he like what happened I don't know but it was basically he basically was like wait why aren't you fat oh god I was like I got it don't worry about it just yeah how do you even respond to that that's tough I know I was like hmm enjoy the show you like to know
Starting point is 00:19:03 wait it turned it turned mean you're like by way there There's no Santa. Yeah. Pie. It's pie in the face. I met Santa, and I'm going to tell him about you. Yeah, you're naughty. You're on the naughty list.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Yeah, you're the worst. This is a knife-knife. The ulterior motive, of course, look, I wanted to have you on the podcast for a while, but I do have two nieces of that age. Really? Oh, yeah. Oh, sweet. Horowitz are very, very excited about this. You're Sadie and Sienna.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Thank you for giving me some brownie points. No worries. I mean, the intensity of the fans. Look, I've talked to a lot of actors over the years with certain kinds of fandom. And this is one of those. Yes, it is. This is one of those. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:43 I mean, can you give me a sense of sort of like, what are the intense fan interactions you do get? Are there typical reactions? Is it ever get too much? Like, what's the... I think there's a very typical reaction when someone is, you know, does recognize or sees me, is a scream or a squeal or a screech? Right. or a gas, and like, you know, like today,
Starting point is 00:20:12 I've been running late all day, but I was in these, my fabulous slides, and then my sleep shorts and a giant t-shirt with Jesse Joe on the back, my eye patches, hair not brushed, hadn't showered, everything, I was in a mess, and then it was one of those moments where I was like, please, please, please, please, please, Not now, not now.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah. And it can get intense. I think sometimes when it comes to privacy or like inanibity, especially like where I live or where I'm going, where I'm traveling to or hotels or like even bathrooms. Like, no. Yeah, there are limits. There are boundaries.
Starting point is 00:20:55 I go pee pee pee now. And usually two over there. Right. Yeah. So that's when it gets a little intense. um yeah yeah i would imagine that and there's no there's no way to teach you that like that's that's just something you kind of learn as you go yeah and some people are just like some people are better at it than others yeah which is fine it's it's i mean it's like yeah i don't know how to
Starting point is 00:21:20 how to describe it and people are like how do you deal with it do you ever have the experience of like hearing people talk about the show or you and not realizing realizing you like like not recognizing you like they're watching it on a on a plane or whatever that happens yeah i've had that i think it was um season two or something or season three i can't remember but there were multiple people watching it on a plane and it was like i'm sure even like also glass onion too that was probably on every plane first period of time that was really cool yeah yeah i think it actually still was on my flight back from europe yeah yeah it's very cool it's It's a good one to re-watch.
Starting point is 00:22:01 Yeah, I was, I was so fit. This is such good shape. You're a mess now. You feel like, I really have, I've let myself go. You know, I did have a conversation. I doubt you saw this, but I did have a conversation the other day with Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. Oh, yes. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:22:17 That was in the group chat. We sent that to the Poops group chat. It's so funny. She's funny. I love her. I'm obsessed with her. As you should be. Let me play it again for you to react.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Just tell me. This is my favorite thing. Could a Pogue and a kook really fall in love? Josh, what the f*** are you talking about? What are these words? What are, what's happening? You love Outer Banks. That's your favorite show next to...
Starting point is 00:22:42 It's my favorite show. The summer I turned pretty and then Outer Banks. Yeah, starring, uh, Louisa and Jacob Tremblay. And, um... Like, I don't know if you're joking. Dominic... Dominic Cooper. Cooper.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Oh, I love Dominic Cooper, though, for the record. He's not. Who else is on Outer Bank? Man, well, shout out to Dom Cooper. So what was it like when you saw that they had no idea what? I wasn't surprised. Yeah. I'm never surprised when people are, when people are like, I haven't watched it.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I'm like, I haven't either. Yeah, it would be obnoxious to just assume everybody knows. Totally. But, yes, that's the right attitude. Yeah, but I thought it was so funny. And Madison sent it in the group chat. And she was like, oh, buddy. Oh, we're fucked.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I was like, we're cooked. Absolutely cooked. Yeah, I saw Chase commented on the MTV post with a whelp. I'm like, oh. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Tim's new scrambled egg loaded croissant. Or is it croissant? No matter how you say it. Start your day with freshly cracked scrambled scrambled. eggs loaded on a buttery, flaky croissant.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Try it with maple brown butter today at Timms, at participating restaurants in Canada for limited time. The white chocolate macadamia cream cold brew from Starbucks is made just the way you like it. Handcrafted cold foam topped with toasted cookie crumble. It's a sweet summer twist on iced coffee. Your cold brew is ready at Starbucks. Okay, it's going to be a long shoot this last season. So you're going to have time to process all of this.
Starting point is 00:24:29 But talk to me a little bit about the choices you're starting to make. You've been making the last couple of years and taking the best opportunities when you've had time. Like, are you already like, you won't have the security blanket of outer banks. That's the scariest part I would imagine, right? Yes, that is to me, I think, the one mindfuck of it all is because it's been, it's been the better part of my 20s. And it's always, it is the security. blanket that I always go back to and I always know that is always going to be there and is in a way like feels like having your training wheels taken off. Yeah. So I think that is I think for me
Starting point is 00:25:14 that's the one thing that's like really kind of messing with my head and we have a very long shoot coming up. Yeah. So there's plenty of time, plenty of time for craft. I had a crash out yesterday. Just like emotionally, just like kind of like, oh okay. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. Because I was hungry.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Yeah. It's a lot of pressure. It's a lot of pressure to be hungry. I feel it every day. Hungry Josh is not a happy Josh. No, no, not at all. I mean, I'm just, I'm thinking about the sushi out there. We were talking.
Starting point is 00:25:47 That's our happy place. It's the happy place when the food has arrived at anticipation of the food. It's just thinking about food. That's my life. It's always like what's the next meal? Like, what's the next meal? The happy place is that period of time between your dasher or your postmate is thicker. Right.
Starting point is 00:26:05 And the first couple bites. Right, before you over indulge. And then it's like, because I am, I shovel food into, like, I'm very, very excited. I'm always very. That's the first time. Yes, but I order everything too. I'm like, I got this, I went this. thing like this. I mean, eat like three bites each.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Right. Where are you on food trends? Do you like go after like, it's like, all right, everyone's doing the Dubai chocolate now. I got to try the Dubai chocolate. Like, where are you got? I have tried a couple of trendy things. I tried the final boss sour things. Okay. I don't know if you've seen that on TikTok. Basically, it's dried fruit that's covered in like a sour. Okay. Enough for me. Okay. Dubai chocolate haven't tried because I'm not really as sweet. I'm not a chocolate person.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Okay. I like sour and I like salty and spicy. Okay. So like Chimoy pickle. Oh. Delicious. Big fan of that trend. Is there any food?
Starting point is 00:27:06 What are your food knows? Like what's your, what are your, no-goes? A hard pass. I don't really like, I don't really love pork. Okay. Not a bacon. Not a, okay.
Starting point is 00:27:25 No, but I love pork. ribs. That's barbecue. Yes. You know what I mean? Yeah. My other nose, anything really just like sweet. Right. You're not a sweet, it's not a sweet tooth. As you said, spicy, sour, savory. Okay. Yeah. But my, yeah. What's in? Yes. Okay. We're all over the waist, but that's okay. That's how my brain works too. also been cool is not only the opportunities you've had like making the most of glass onion etc all these great things off of outer banks but like your co-stars too it's like oh yeah oh that's what we were talking about oh yeah yeah yeah okay
Starting point is 00:28:07 no all good yeah the career outside of outer banks so like when you see like Drew like had that opportunity with Daniel who's apparently just running through the the Outer Banks cast I know we're so run through by Daniel Craig he's a secret OVX obsessive he pretends like he doesn't know but he knows really funny He's like, yes, Drew also, side's so funny story about Daniel is he hates jazz, like loaves jazz. Who hates jazz? Daniel Craig. Okay, good to know.
Starting point is 00:28:38 He's so triggered by it. Did you know this or was this is from Drew? No, I know this. And then Drew and I were actually talking about our experiences with him and he's, you know, but Daniel always has his little earbuds in. And I was like, Drew, what does he listen to? Because I'd never ask. He's like, Keshah or like something, like, you know, like that.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Okay. I think it was Keshah, though. Okay. I think that's what Drew said. Interesting. Yeah. It's just, he's such a, he's so silly and fun and nice. But, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:13 He intimidated the hell out of me for years. And then like I started, I did some stuff around. It's his everything. He's also his physicality. He's a big, bruising kind of guy. But, yeah, I did it something. things around glass onion and I did longer form stuff with him and I feel like I'm like okay now I kind of get a beat on you. He has crazy aura for sure yeah um but just like very nice wants to do
Starting point is 00:29:34 the crossword every day who so who in that cast was most least intimidating like who did you like feel that you rod with that you were like I'm yeah I was I was pretty intimidated by that entire cast I don't know if there was one who was most or least intimidating. Probably what I do remember feeling like the most starstruck was when I had a rehearsal with Edward Norton and Daniel. Yeah. Or no, sorry, I had a rehearsal with Ryan and then theirs was after, so they both walked in and I was like. Yeah. Edward's intense. He's a smart Oh, sprinkle, sprinkle. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Uh-oh. Like, all, no thoughts. Yeah. I, like, practically ran out. I just didn't. Right. I was so scared. Catherine.
Starting point is 00:30:32 She's a beam of words. She's a beam of words. She was just so, like, oh, I love her. I know. I wouldn't do anything for her. Yeah. She's also worked with Chase Sweet and Sarah Pigeum. So all three of us have worked together.
Starting point is 00:30:47 I know. Yeah. So she's very. running through the I know what you did love. She's competing with Daniel. Yeah, yeah. That's correct. You shot Day Drinker?
Starting point is 00:30:54 Mm-hmm. Talk about some more icons you're knocking off the list. That was another thing. I was like my very first day on set. I'm a bartender. And I, they had me in bartending training. I was like, I've got this. You know, doing my name.
Starting point is 00:31:09 And my first day on set is like me bartending. And like with Johnny, and I take the cup up. And it was like on a plate. And I was like, And you could hear it. It's a character trait that I shake a lot. Yes, but very intimidating. Yeah, so for the record, this is Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, also in it.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Also incredible. Unbelievable. How many scarves was he wearing? Or I guess he's in character. He's not wearing all the scarves. He has a scarf on. Of course he does. He has a contractual.
Starting point is 00:31:37 He likes his scarves. But does that go away that intimidation out on day two? Yeah, that was, that went away fairly quickly. And I also think it was. was truly the start of my character's, like, real arc. Like, those were the, like, those scenes that we did is kind of her backbone. Yeah. So you get to kind of mirror her arc a little bit, you're saying?
Starting point is 00:32:04 Like, she kind of, like, gets more comfortable or in that world? Well, in a way, I think that could have, which is why I had to lean into it, because I wanted it to inform. Yeah. Because it can, but I was, it was just really important to me to get it right. You know what I mean? Very, very important. But yes.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Do you find you're like having to chase like good material or are you like, is it competitive out there to like find in your age group? I think so, yeah. Yeah. It's competitive for sure. And I think one of my acting teachers a long time ago was always said that whatever projects come to you are the ones that you have to learn. lessons from. Right. Which I think is just life in general, but it's a nice way to think about it.
Starting point is 00:32:55 And it's interesting because every project I've had, I have learned something or taken something away personally from it. So I have informed character, a character has informed me, which I think is kind of nice just like to let go and let those lessons and emotions develop. So what are the lessons about another film? I got a chance to see it's coming out, I think, wait summer. Oh, yes. The new Lassie Halstrom film, you and KJ. Appa, it's the map that leads to you.
Starting point is 00:33:25 Yes. Very sweet. It's kind of definitely in like that before sunrise. That's exactly, yes. That was the reference. Right. So what do you take away from that besides, again, getting to travel through Europe and see amazing places with cool people?
Starting point is 00:33:39 Right, right. And that's a good, boring thing. Yeah. I think the main lesson with that one is love is so. like important yeah like it is I don't know like just love in general um and telling people that you love them is so important um and allowing yourself to love because I feel like sometimes we're we're so afraid of emoting yeah or being too vulnerable but it's also it's so important yeah you have to expose yourself if you're gonna you have to okay
Starting point is 00:34:18 You have to. Yeah, that's a lesson. I think that was the takeaway. Like, you have to open up. Talking about opening up, without spoiling anything, you do sing a little bit in that film. There's some guitar and some singing. It was so embarrassing. Was it, was it that mortifying? What's going on? Yeah. Yeah. Had that feel? Was that, is that like, is there, nothing feels more exposing maybe outside of a sex scene than like. Hush, hush. I think that was Paul Abdul. Is it, no, trust, trust? You just want to Paul Abtool. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Kianna's in the video, I think. I clearly am a singer. Clearly. Clearly. Yeah. Yes, and well, Marty said, Madeline, have you, Marty, Bowen, our producer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:03 I was like, Madeline, do you sing? Do you play guitar? I was like, yes, I have taken lessons, and I, and both. And so he took that as a yes, like, that I, because it's not, there's, like, one thing, I can, you know,
Starting point is 00:35:17 Yeah. I know G. I know C. You're ahead of me. I know D. Everyone knows D though. Come on. I know what a fret is.
Starting point is 00:35:30 I don't know what that is. Period. No, no, I'm just kidding. So I knew there's that and then there's actually playing, which by the way, sorry. You're good, you're good, okay. Which by the way, KJ is... You know what KJ has a band? I think I knew that.
Starting point is 00:35:46 He, like, picked up guitar, and he's like, pitter-d-d-hm... Jerk. I know. I know. And I asked, I asked Marty, I was like, can we please take it out? I'm really embarrassed. I don't want to think. He can, like, he played the guitar, and can I think...
Starting point is 00:35:56 Because singing and playing guitar is really, really hard. Yeah. Yeah. Especially just on set, like, again, supposing yourself to strangers, not strangers, but... I know. This episode is brought to you by Square. You're not just running a restaurant. You're building something.

Starting point is 00:36:59 Who is doing it right in your age group? Like who's the, who's the actor, young actor, male or female, you think that's like, you know, everyone can say Leo, but that's obviously like the next generation, the previous generation. But like who in like the 20s right now do you admire kind of like what they're showing off their range, their choices? Honestly, God, I think there's so many. I'm, like, so impressed by, I'm so impressed by, like, one of my close friends, Lucas Gage. Yeah. I'm so impressed by him and his attitude towards, towards acting and write it.
Starting point is 00:37:34 Like, he's an incredible writer. And he's just so, he's so incredibly smart. I think Sidney is also incredibly smart and, like, very, very. very, very intelligent businesswoman, and also she's, I think she's very impressive. Yeah, I think people underestimate Sydney a lot at their peril. That's like they... It's like her superpower. She lets it happen.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Yeah. Which also, that is, that's kind of like, that's one of the best things ever. It's one of my favorite feelings is being underestimated and then proving someone wrong. I think Sophie Thatcher is really impressive and a huge certify. Cineophile. Adore her. I'm trying to think, I mean, Drew, obviously. Anya, I think.
Starting point is 00:38:23 I mean, of course, like Jenna, and the list goes on. I think the whole group was really impressive. Kind of experiences, kind of filmmaker that you, on the other side of Outer Banks that you're looking for right now, like what's on your mind, like in terms of bucket list? God, I'm really, Day Drinker was quite heady and heavy. So I, you know, and obviously outer banks you come back and I felt like I could finally like exhale.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Yep. Because it's very easy. It's like, you know, getting on your bike with your training wheels that are about to fall off. And so I think after this, I really, I like, I want to do comedy. I think the art of the rom-com has been lost a little bit and I have so many ideas and I really want to do I love oh my god Rachel's in it of course yeah I'm excited about her new show right she's a new HBO show I think she's doing right I know um and I really want to do like I love like Thelman Louise type mm-hmm to Two unhinged bitches go on an adventure. Honestly, by the way, a good name for a movie. Just unhinged bitches coming 2026.
Starting point is 00:39:48 Honestly, untitled unhinged bitches project. Yeah. Period. Who's your co-star? I don't know. I'm still thinking about that. I kind of want to put KJ in a wig. Does KJ know about this?
Starting point is 00:40:01 Is he okay? He knows about Fifi. That's his alter ego? Yes, Fifi. Obviously, yeah. And I really think that it would be incredible. Me, I like, C.C. and Fifi, big road trip adventure. That's the official name.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Maybe. It's a little long on a poster, but. I kind of want it to just, like, I want the title to, like, just run off. And so you don't know what the rest of it says. Right, right, right. C, C, C, V, D, D. Yeah. Well, there's still time to change the name to, from, I know what you did last summer to,
Starting point is 00:40:36 slash slash, or, what is it? Hook hook, hook, hook, hook, slash, it's like Morse code, but for angry fishermen who are hell-bent on exacting revenge on teenagers. Oh, my God. It's a niche focus group, but they're out there. I love it. Yeah. Oh, they're out there.
Starting point is 00:40:55 They're out there. There's four of those guys. Be safe. They are out there. I'm going to let you go soon, I promise. But is the Abba obsession overstated or is it accurate? It is accurate. It is accurate.
Starting point is 00:41:09 I'm obsessed with them. So you would like a Mamma Mia film or like a Taylor Swift video, what would you... Mama Mia. I actually watched it on the plane. Did you? Yes. Original or... Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Oh, yes. I love them. It makes me cry. The same way that, like, how to train your dragon makes me cry every single time. Did you see the new one yet? No, not yet. That's my plan for tomorrow or something when I get back to South Carolina. Do you like to cry watching movies?
Starting point is 00:41:35 Sometimes it's like, no. Cathartic. Yeah. No, I don't, but if something really gets me, which How to Train Your Dragon does, or Mama Mia. Right. Oh, I'm sobbing. That's me with OBX. Really?
Starting point is 00:41:47 Not Dakota Johnson. We should have a watch party. Let's expose Dakota to OBX from the start. Yes, yes, exposure and limes. I'm going to end with this. The happy second few profoundly random questions. You ready? We're doing it.
Starting point is 00:42:04 Dogs or cats? Dogs. Correct. You are your dog, mom? Right? Yes, and I'm allergic to cats. So just by... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:11 I'm with you. What do you collect, if anything? What do I collect? Um... Like, on purpose? Either way. You can take it over you like. On purpose?
Starting point is 00:42:25 Probably like storage units and suitcases. Oh, you're a hoarder. Oh, I am a hoarder, actually. My best friend will say that. Yeah. Okay. Do you have a favorite video game of all time? game of all time um of all time I when you've sunk the most time into maybe the
Starting point is 00:42:43 one that I've sunk the most time into is returnal okay great game okay it's a first person shooter like rogue style okay it's very cool okay actually this is the Dakota Johnson Memorial question she asked me this once would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one be in your butt one be in my butt yeah I think that's the correct I mean I think it's the correct answer I think it's the correct answer I think the correct answer because also like if you've ever gotten waxed you know it doesn't really hurt right so I think that I think that it's pretty safe okay I'll take your word for it what's the wallpaper I will okay yeah next time
Starting point is 00:43:19 next podcast what's the wallpaper on your phone it's a bunch of pictures that's the little slideshow um but I think the last one is that Lisa Rina should we get it oh my god should we oh wait I do have to show yeah one of you one are we Grab it. Yeah, if you don't mind. We'll grab it. This is my friends. We were all in Disney Channel, or Disney Channel.
Starting point is 00:43:43 We were in Disney Channel for Odessa's birthday. And we, there were shirts that we had that we were wearing around Disney World that said, stop being not my birthday. And we're calling it Odessa's Dwap. Disney World Adventure Party. This is from Italy. Beautiful film photo that I took if I didn't see so much else. Who's that?
Starting point is 00:44:13 Oh, there's a big group chat that happened. That's why my phone was going on. There you go. From Tommy Hilfiger and Canawan, a group of great people. Oh, was that Patrick Schwarzenegger of that campaign? Yes. Nice. Did you watch White Lotus yet?
Starting point is 00:44:27 I didn't make it all the way through. Okay. Tom and Jerry? Yes. Yes. I really like this picture. That's how I feel. I think I have, oh, my, my pop-up. Sweet. More Dwop. Lucas. He's so cute. Look at, he probably said something really unhinged.
Starting point is 00:44:51 We connected recently on social media. He was very sweet to me. He's awesome. Yeah, I don't think we've met in person, but one of these days. Oh my God, he is such a trip. He and I together absolutely diabolical. Really? Yes. It's like the Sagittarius Gemini. Excellency. Okay.
Starting point is 00:45:05 This is the last actor you were mistaken for? Not an actor. Okay. But you know, she's a girl on TikTok who went viral, let's see. Bailin. Bailin Dupree. Okay. She went viral because she would make TikToks about like having Toux.
Starting point is 00:45:31 Okay. she's really fucking funny you know and she like she would be making a TikTok about you know the hand sanitizer that she was just gifted and then she was like taking me like steer the Titan and that was when the Titans
Starting point is 00:45:46 immersive like you know and wind it up and she's just very she's very funny I think she actually I could be wrong she might be doing a reality show she's very very cute so I got they thought I was her
Starting point is 00:46:01 So they had looked at, I was at Burger King. They said, wind it up. And I was like, wind it up. Yeah. I'll take that. I like her. I love Winded Up. You know her too.
Starting point is 00:46:12 And they're like, what? Aren't you her? I was like, no. But thank you. I appreciate it nonetheless. Yes. Worst noted director has ever given you. Talk like person.
Starting point is 00:46:25 Period. How did you respond? Slend. And I was like, I was like, Yeah. It was like the Britney Brosky meme. It was like a... Totally.
Starting point is 00:46:39 And finally, Spirit of Happy Second Fused. An actor who always makes you happy. See them on the screen, you're instantly happier. I love... Shit, Buck. I love that guy. Love that. He's awesome. Pierce Brosnan.
Starting point is 00:46:55 Great. I love when he... You just saw Malmia. That's why you're thinking. When you're gone. And I think it's really good. One of the great singers of our time, here's Praznan. He committed.
Starting point is 00:47:05 He committed. Movie that makes you sad. We kind of talked about this a little bit. What's the go-to movie that makes you sad? The one that makes me cry, how to train your dragon. But it's like, happy, sad, confused. Very happy sad. Yes, okay.
Starting point is 00:47:18 And finally, again, we kind of covered this, but food that makes you confused. You see it on a menu, you don't get it. Yes. Why do people eat this? Is it pork? Is that what you're saying? No, squid, I think. Squid.
Starting point is 00:47:30 or like jellyfish or shark yeah you know some of these like but but also i'm not one to talk i love searge right i have plans for this dinner already tonight you're already thinking about it half of your brain on those conversations i'm like seers in three hours so good it's a box of just uni that comes with the rice yeah yeah yeah i've had those are great also i know we have to be done but did you know well i was reading um okay i was watching a tech talk but Someone was saying that the James Webb Telescope has found, has discovered something that is evidence, there could be strong evidence towards the fact that our universe is a pocket universe in a black hole. You can't just leave a conversation ending on that note.
Starting point is 00:48:20 That's the beginning of the conversation, not the end of the conversation. I have been telling everyone, I'm like, oh my God, but that means then there's a... It could be that there are other black holes in a... black holes in our universe and are also pocket universes and then we're just right right right great by the way it's all a simulation thanks madeline appreciate it well i'm gonna keep doing my podcast in the pocket universe whatever this is i know but like what if why can't we be in the pocket universe with like fairies and i'd love to be anywhere else than whatever universe this is right now let's be frank right anywhere else anywhere else um but we did it we did the podcast thank you for making

Next time I'm going to dress to the nines for you because you just, you brought it. I did. I gave, you know, it's giving something ever.
