and they're a little too far away, and now they're running,
and we're both asking ourselves, is it worth it to run,
instead of just, you know, letting them open their own door?
But still, it's the right thing to do.

Happy, sad, confused begins now.
Today on Happy Say Confused, Matt Smith returns to talk House of the Dragon,
a surprising Morbius fan, and his favorite movie game.
Hey, guys, Josh Horowitz here with another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused,
and yes, another one of our all-time faves.
Mr. Matt Smith is back.
Not only that, he was back in person with me, which made it all the more special.
Another great chat with the delightfully charismatic, talented, and thoroughly unique, Matt Smith.
More to come on that in a second.
First up, let me mention a couple upcoming events.
If you want to see me in person talking to some of your favorites, well, we've got a bunch coming up this Friday here in New York City 7 p.m.
It's me and Elizabeth Moss.
there are still tickets available. There are virtual tickets available. It's at 90 Second Street Wally.
All the information is in the show notes. Next Thursday, September 29th, I'll be catching up with Mila Koonis. Very excited about that one. She's never done the podcast before. That will be fantastic. That's again at 92nd Street Wally. 7 p.m. I think it's actually a 7 p.m. screening of her film followed by the Q&A. Again, all the information in the show notes. Let's see what else. I hope to see some.
of you guys at New York Comic-Con. I'll be moderating the Weird Al panel. Technically, the film
was called Weird, but it will have Dan Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, director Eric Appel and Weird
Al all participating. See me on that Sunday, October 9th. I think I have that right.
What else? What else? What else? October 25th, Ralph Machio at Symphony Space talking about
his new memoir. And of course, that includes the karate kid, my cousin Vinny, anything else you can
think of. I'm really excited for that. That is my first
conversation with Ralph. That should be a lot of fun. And if you can believe it, there are more
things coming. We just haven't announced them yet. But yeah, we're just cranking away at the
happy, say, confused conversations in person. We're doing more live virtual ones for those of you
that are signed up to the Patreon. If you've done that, you know you've gotten a chance to
participate in the live virtual space with folks like Graham McTavish, Jamie Campbell Bauer, and there
are a couple of really fun ones coming up in the next month to six weeks that you will be
very excited by, uh, patreon.com slash happy say I confused, early access to every single episode,
video form, audio form, bonuses, early announcements, discount codes to the live shows. Uh, that's
what we do over there. And then of course, one other plug, YouTube.com slash Josh Horowitz. That's
where all the video versions of the podcast eventually go. Um,
And yeah, we're just posting a ton of stuff there, and that continues to grow day by day.
So I'm really thrilled about that.
All right, so Matt Smith.
This was a really fun catch-up.
Matt came into New York City to do some press for House of the Dragon.
So thrilled for him that he gets to be a juicy role in this show that is so at the center of pop culture right now.
Folly up Game of Thrones is no small challenge, but these guys have more than lived up to it, I feel.
and he's had some really great stuff to do.
If you guys haven't seen the latest episodes,
it might be smart to catch up on them before this chat.
We do talk about some of the events in episode three
and episode four specifically.
And, yeah, Matt and I talk a lot about House of the Dragons,
certainly catch up on our mutual love of film.
He introduced me to a really fun movie game
that I did not know about.
I told Matt about a very big superstar
that I found out was watching.
Morbius recently that really tickled Matt and of course we swap Claire Foy stories we
swap dog stories we talk Star Wars there's a lot in here it's a relatively short
conversation compared to the usual ones we do but we actually managed to really fit in
a ton and I know you guys are going to dig it as always follow me on social media
Joshua Horowitz on Instagram and Twitter and yeah let's get right to it guys here we go
House of the Dragon star, Mr. Matt Smith, and I, for your ears right now.
Well, look, it's Matt Smith, star of House of the Dragon, noted erotic thriller enthusiast.
What else should be on the reservation?
Good menu, football fan.
There we go.
Do we mention erotic thrillers?
I mean, particularly 90s, erotic thrillers.
Do you know what, I, did we mention Slither that time?
We must have.
If not, we should devote this whole hour to Slyther.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, that was Tom Berringer, William Baldwin, Sharon Stone.
I know this way too well.
Yeah, you found a partner here.
It'd be weird to watch them together, though, wouldn't it?
A weird film club.
Welcome back to the podcast.
Thanks for The Goblet.
Well, he brought his own guys.
That's his.
Here's one I made earlier.
So it's good to see you.
Most importantly, it's good to see you in person.
So let's talk to me.
Let's start just on House of the Dragon.
because you're back in the center of the cultural zeitgeist.
Congratulations.
Is it a relief when something like this drops and the reviews are good
and people are receptive?
Because, as you well know, it can go either way.
Yeah, I mean, it's always relief when anything drops
and the reviews are not horrendous.
I've been on both sides of the coin, even recently.
I don't know what you're referring to.
It is because you work, you know, you work, you put a lot of effort into it, don't
But either way, it is what it is.
Either people are going to go for it or they're not.
And it's, I think with a show like this, particularly what is challenging is that you're
coming, you're following in the footsteps of something gargantuan.
So what are you going to do? Like, it's never going to be as good.
It's never going to create the same sort of cultural footprint that Game of Thrones did because it can't.
So it was always going to be, you know, but, but, but, you know, thus far, people, people,
at least people I've talked to close to me seem to have enjoyed it.
And that's usually a good side.
I don't know if you've been like attuned to different kinds of people's reaction,
but just to name drop for a second,
I was just in Toronto and interviewed Kid Harrington, who's been watching.
Oh, yeah.
And it was very kind.
Really?
Was he?
Yeah, absolutely.
He said, like, he went in, like, you know, he felt weird about it.
And then he realized a couple episodes in, like, oh, they're doing their own thing.
And yes, it has some of the trappings, but this works on its own.
Yeah.
And that's a high compliment.
Well, and I mean, you know, the truth is without the performances of Kit, Amelia, you know, all of those guys, Richard, all, like Sean, all those great actors who were in it, we wouldn't stand a chance.
You know, they did the bulk of the work for us, really, because they've created this zeitgeist that you talk about is whether or not we can continue to deliver something of high quality.
But, you know, I'm pleased that he's enjoyed it, because it's always strange.
I mean, I find that, you know, when I watch kind of Doctor Who, it's always slightly odd at first.
Is something like this like an easy yes?
Like, do you labor over decisions?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I labor over what socks I'm wearing in the morning.
I mean, like some I do and some I don't, but in terms of work, yeah.
So how do you finally make the call?
Do you have a little cadre of friends and family you call upon or is it you looking in the mirror or what happens?
They all hate me for it.
It's a really painful process.
And then it gets to the point where I've just got to decide.
And it's literally like the 11th hour, quote.
And, you know, it's like, either you're going to do it or you're not.
And I'm like, yeah, I'll do it.
Mine.
And then I panic about it for another month.
And then I do it and, you know.
Then it all ends up relatively okay.
Well, you know, there's a really wonderful cast on this.
I don't know if you've met anyone yet.
I think I'm going to talk to Patty, who I've never chatted with before,
but I'm a huge fan.
Pretty soon for the podcast, I think.
Oh, can you ask him the film question?
Whatever you want.
Yeah, you know the film question that we did?
No.
What are we talking about?
You know when you pick your favorite movies?
Oh yeah, the comfort movie.
Yeah, of course I will.
I hear he's a big Rocky movie fan.
Yeah, he loves Rocky.
Also horror movies.
He's a big horror enthusiast.
Oh, so we're going to get along well.
Yeah, yeah.
He really loves those old, like, I think, you know,
old kind of 70s horror and stuff.
He's brilliant.
I love, yeah, he's now a good,
I can safely say, Paddy Considine is my friend.
Pretty good, a good perk.
Yeah.
I also know pretty well Graham McTavish.
I talked to him recently.
Absolutely, dude.
the funniest men on the planet.
He was saying to me that there was not a time
when you would walk by with Dark Sister
that he would not relish the saying.
Yeah.
Here comes Dark Sister.
Yeah.
He's a really, he's a brilliantly human man.
And he had a tough job at times
because he's in that armor all day.
So do Fabian Frankel and they're there,
they stood there, and the arm's no fun.
How much of the job in a way,
and I'm being slightly facetious, but like...
Is a total pain in the ass.
Well, not that.
Well, we can get to that.
But suppressing, like, the laughter of these kind of, like, insane situations.
You've got the accoutrements.
You've got the CGI dragons, et cetera.
And it's got to be absurd in its own.
It's like you're in Monty Python at times.
Right.
Are we doing a drama?
What do we do?
Yeah, how dare you come here?
I'm going to point my sword at you and be really cross.
Yeah, there is a lot of laughing when that happens.
What's a good day and a bad day on the set of House of the Dragon?
Like, what's the scene you look forward to?
What's the scene in the script or you're like, oh, God.
I quite like the physical stuff, because the day.
days go quickly. The worst days are the days, and heaven, you know, I was very lucky in
that I wasn't in a huge amount of them, the council scenes. Right. You're sat around, you've got
to talk, they've got to move the camera. Let's turn it around again and moving there. That's a pain
in the ass. But I wasn't in loads of those. And I asked them not, you know, this year I was like,
please don't put me on the small council. I don't know if I meant to be on the small council,
but, you know. Can I just have more scenes with me talking to myself in the room? Yeah, pretty
Talk about the physicality.
As we sit here, a couple weeks ago, episode three dropped.
And the end of episode three is pretty remarkable.
It's a bit of physical acting.
I think it's silent, like you don't say anything.
Yeah, it's a silent movie.
It's my best stuff when I don't talk.
No, no.
But it is a great piece of choreography and all the accoutrements of great television or storytelling or there.
Talking about what it was like to film that.
Was that a gas?
exciting or overwhelming or what?
Yeah, it was.
I mean, you know, it was a long process.
There was a lot of rehearsals involved in it,
and it sort of, you know, it started out
as a completely different scene.
There was a whole, which I loved.
I can't talk about it, but I really campaigned
to keep it that way.
And we ended up with this for a number of reasons,
which I still think, you know, I was really pleased with,
actually.
But yeah, there's a lot of running on the sand
and rolling and fighting, and I love all that
because it makes the days go quickly,
And it was a new, I'd never done that.
I'd never done that sort of thing on Doctor Who,
clearly not on the Crown.
It's a bit of fighting in Morbius, but not quite, you know, with swords and that.
So I was always, that was part of it that I was looking forward to greatly.
A little spoiler alert for the fans out there,
which is that there are connections, obviously,
between characters from Game of Thrones and this.
And I think of that when I think of this sequence,
because I think of John Snow and some of the iconic action.
like the bastards and all that.
Yes, of course.
Yeah.
Is that on your mind?
Because you are, I think you're like the seventh grandfather, et cetera, John Snow, technically
speaking.
Yeah.
Really?
God, I didn't know that.
Yeah.
I mean, look, again, the legacy of the previous show is always, I suppose you're aware of it.
But I was always keen that whilst we are making something that sits in the same world,
it had to feel like it was, we're pushing something forward.
And it's got to feel like its own original world.
And, you know, I wanted Damon to feel like a, you know, I didn't want it to be a repeat of John Snow, you know.
Much as I loved him as a character and Kit did some brilliant work in it and stuff, it was, I was quite keen.
There was a lot of, I just, you know, think of John Snow and I was like, no, no, no, no, no.
That's not the angle we're going.
We're going somewhere else.
Yeah, 10 years from now in the next spin-off, don't think of Damon.
Don't.
Don't think of Damon.
He's gone.
He's a dead man.
Or is he?
Or is he?
We don't know if he's a dead man, though, this is the thing with Damon.
This is what, yeah.
Well, you were about to, maybe spoil it all, I'm not sure.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Your relationship with your niece is a complicated one.
Yeah.
It's not without his edges.
I mean, rule of thumb.
Group therapy, probably.
I was going to say, yeah, rule of thumb, uncles should never bring their nieces to a brothel, I feel like, right?
Definitely not.
I mean, there's a lot of stuff that uncles should not do, which Damon,
Raymond, you know.
I often think a great episode of this,
which I think we should just make
as a standalone piece of naturalistic drama
should be the family in group therapy.
Oh, my God.
It'd be a great play, wouldn't it?
I mean, it would be a great sketch
for my shenanigans at Comedy Central,
so if we can make that happen.
Hey, man, I'm in. I'm up for it.
Ask Paddy. He'd do it.
Okay, fair enough.
What are the oh shit moments to come in the season?
Do you know what's coming?
Are you like, should I brace myself for episode eight
when all, it all...
Oh, gosh.
A part.
Look, you know, without giving too much away, I think, what are the oh shit moments?
There's a couple coming up.
There's one actually in seven, I think, episode seven.
And also what's really exciting is we've got Emma Darcy coming through, who's just
absolutely.
A part of the time jump, right?
Fabulous, yeah.
And Liv, who plays Emily's character, who plays Alison.
And they're, you know, it's because that's an odd thing for them.
They're coming in now, and these characters have been a start.
But actually, I think all the fans of the show will be really pleased because they're just brilliant and they really move the show forward in an exciting way, but I wouldn't want to ruin it if you.
No, tune in. Watch.
Can you say if, like, do you go back and forth or once we're, we make the jump, are we all?
I think once we make the jump, we're in.
Got it.
And I'm pretty sure that from then on, there's not any big, huge time jumps, particularly next season and the one after.
Got it.
And the one after and the one after.
How many there are?
How many are you signed on for?
Check the contract.
Yeah, yeah.
Eight?
What?
I have to do four more Morbius movies.
What's going on, guys?
I do have to do another Morbius movie.
Bring it back, man.
Come on.
I mean, there's some love out there.
Yeah.
I will have you know.
I love vampires, as you know.
I think we talked about vampires in our last, yeah.
I'll have you know.
I know it got some crap out there.
It did get some crap.
I was on a flight and no less than Keanu Reeves.
was watching Morbius.
Get out of my life.
You are joking.
Not only that, I was eaves dropping.
I was kind of like spying on him.
I love Keanu Reeves.
I mean, who doesn't?
I love Keanu Reeves.
He was watching Morbius and a clockwork orange back to back.
That was his double feature.
Because he's an absolute legend of man.
That's what I wrote to my friends.
I was like, this is the perfect double feature.
I love this man.
What a movie star.
Like there's that great, I love playing movie star actor.
I don't think you've ever played that.
No, should we play?
What is this?
Is he a movie star or is he an actor?
And then you go, you know, that's what you know,
movie star actor.
It's great, it's good fun.
Are you out to, but what, Matt Smith, movie star actor?
Actor.
Okay.
So.
Harrison Ford.
Movie star.
Yeah.
Daniel Radcliffe.
Actor.
Yeah.
Yes, and it goes on and on, you know.
It's good fun.
I just saw Weird Al, the Weird Al movie too.
Oh yes, where he's got fuzzy hair.
So good.
Yeah, he's good, it's good, isn't it, Daniel?
He's managed, you know, he's...
Oh, he's the template for what you do with that situation, right?
He's done something really brilliant, actually.
Yeah, and just done some really interesting thing.
I think that escape from Pretoria looks quite good as well.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
But Keanu, let's get back to Keanu.
I mean, what's the Mount Rushmore on Keanu?
What's your point break?
Yeah, point break.
I watched Hot Fuzz again the other day, actually.
And there's that great moment where Nick Frost at the end.
I mean, I'm not sure if you've ever seen Hot Fuzz.
Of course.
Yeah, yeah, and he does that.
Who are you talking to?
Yeah.
I mean, Keanu, look, we've got Mone Private Idaho.
Yeah.
I love, again, I watched other day, watch Constantine,
because I love the devil, all that sort of stuff.
What's the movie made with Al Pacino as well?
Oh, devil's advocate.
Devil's advocate.
Al, going for it.
Movie star actor.
Movie star.
Oh, wow, really?
Al's a movie star.
Charlie Theron, movie star actor.
Movies.
Movie star.
But then you see Monster.
I mean, that's an actor.
Yeah, I don't know.
It's confusing.
Then there's the sort of, then there's the middle line.
There's, there's a bit called them, so Daniel Day Lewis.
Actor.
Yeah, yeah.
But is he both?
Claire Foy.
Actor, I think.
You know, I just, but if she wanted to be a movie star, she could be.
Well, she is.
For those playing the drinking game, it's late to come.
Like, it's like 10, 50 minutes into the conversation where you had to do a shot.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, Claire Foy came up.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Claire Foy.
Yeah, Claire Foy.
Just legend.
She just falls into legend.
Legend.
And I spent time with the legend.
I saw her five consecutive days.
Terrible.
You must have been timed.
At a film festival.
No.
Just recently.
Like two weeks ago.
With that movie, she's just done?
I was at the Teller at Film Festival.
That looks good.
Oh my gosh.
Is it great?
She's going to win an Oscar.
I don't want jinx it.
He said it here first.
It does look good.
It's got what a cast.
Ben Wischar is out.
Wischar could get nominated too.
He's the only...
Actor.
Actor.
Yeah, an amazing one.
Good game, isn't it?
This is a good game.
What an actor, though.
Who are the...
Do you have a short list of actors that, like...
I love.
Well, not that you love.
We know that.
But that, like, you've imagined yourself, like, sharing the screen with.
That, like, I need to will listen to existence before all of a set and done.
We're, like...
What, that I've anticipated in my sort of...
Yeah.
Like, I mean, is it Keanu, like, that you'd like to just, like, share a scene with?
Like, I mean, are there some that you just know you'd vibe with or hope you would vibe with?
Yeah.
God, so many.
There's so many actors I just love to work with.
I mean, I was one.
I was just sat watching outtakes of Will Ferrell for like hours.
I don't think I'd be able to get through a scene with him.
Look, I'd love to work with Will Ferrell.
I'd love to work with Wacking Phoenix.
I think he'd be amazing.
I'd love the same many.
Do you know what's frustrating about this?
I get home and then I go, damn, I've always got such a clear list of ten.
It's like my favourite movie.
I might have to send them into you.
Please, please.
Who else?
Who else?
Leo, I'd love to work with.
Daniel Lewis, I'd love to work with.
These are all men now, aren't they?
That's okay. You're a misogynist.
No, I mean, it's not. It's only Claire Foy and Karen Gillen. Those are the only two.
Karen Gillen I would love to work with again.
Who's a better textor? Claire or Karen?
Both are quite good. I'd say Claire.
Really?
Yeah, Karen, you know, sometimes it's... I'm terrible at texting. I'm the world's worst.
Yeah, I don't know why.
Okay.
I'm sure if we ever swap numbers, you'll go, yeah, it's a week later you get text back.
Pet peeves on set. What gets you riled up?
Noise. Noise is when I'm... If I'm on set and this...
there's people like fidgeting and talking and all that.
And now I'm like, come on guys, just keep this focused.
Right.
The peripheral vision, the kind of like, eye lines.
People moving around.
I'm bad with eye lines.
I'm a real pedant.
I seem like a real, it's one of the things I'm quite like,
oh, hey, come on, let's, yeah.
Is that what it sounds like when you lose it?
Like, can you go a little more extreme?
I'm polite.
I'm like, eye lines, no, I mean, ask the first direct time.
You know, I'm like, can we make sure the airlines are.
Sure.
I'm polite.
Yeah, of course you are.
Yeah.
Do you ever get mistaken for another actor?
Nick Nolty, no.
Matthew Modine, no, let me think.
Andrew Lansbury.
Yeah, Patrick Swayze.
No, no one, no one really.
Although who could I be, again?
The singular visage of Matt Smith.
It can't be replicated.
Who among your contemporaries?
I get mistaken for a boot.
My friends think I look like that, basically.
Among your contemporaries, who was the guy that was always beating you out for roles?
Oh, loads of them were.
Andy Garfield was that he read, mate.
I mean, you know, all of them.
All of them.
Do you meant, was there was a period of time where like before Doctor Who, where you felt like,
once my turn coming?
I think, yeah, definitely.
I think you always get that.
I think you still feel it now.
I mean, surely even like, not Brad Pitt, but someone loses that to Brad Pitt,
who's a top, amazing, you know.
Movie star actor.
movie stuff. Come on.
I'm obsessed with your game, sorry.
I know, right?
It keeps going and that's the thing.
People keep playing it.
Anyway, yeah, of course.
But I think, you know, and often like lots of younger actors,
I can say that now because I'm 40 in two weeks.
Not yet, yeah.
Two weeks are like, and I say that to me.
You just got to keep plugging away, man.
Keep going.
And I like, you know, and I said to my dad once, actually,
I was auditioning at the National Theatre and I said,
I'm just fed up of being like second all the time.
He's like, come on.
Were you, are you a good auditioner?
Is that something that is in your skill set,
that you dread, that you now come to appreciate, or what?
It's luck of the day.
Depends how you wake up and what sort of bed you get out on.
It's like doing a play.
Sometimes you're electric and sometimes you're slightly off the beat.
And I've had really great ones.
What of the big...
I had a great one in New York with Ryan Gosling, actually.
He was doing...
What's the one he directed?
Yeah, Lost River.
And I got this phone call like,
do you want to fly to New York?
Yeah.
I was doing Doctor Who to meet Ron Gosling.
Yeah?
He's one.
I love him.
I love to work with him on screen.
Movie star.
Yeah.
And then he was like, yeah.
And I sort of couldn't get my head around the fact that he walked in the room.
And then it was just a really brilliant process with him.
Is there one that haunts you where you took a big swing?
And as you're leaving the room, you were just like, I'm going to try and flush this out of my brain forever.
Many.
And then you phone your agent up and it's like they've got to kind of therapy as you out of it.
actors, who would deal with, what a mad job that is, being an agent, 30 actors, it's like
30 kids.
Right, it's like being a therapist.
Yeah.
Plus.
But less fun.
Did our last chat help or hurt your future chances in the Star Wars universe?
No, no one's called about it.
No one called.
Kathleen Kennedy didn't say, shut the fuck up, Matt.
No, I've not heard from JJ, so, no.
Well, that's probably good.
That show that I may or may not have ever been about to be in.
Did you have, did you?
Did you ever see Rise of Skywalker?
Yeah, that's the one where they had the big fight at the end, isn't it?
Well, they...
That could be all of them.
That's like Hamlet.
No, no, but it is.
So when you were supposed to be it?
Yeah, yeah, I did.
That's the one where he's walking through the forest and driver.
No, that's the first one.
That's...
Well, I think there might be force in a couple,
but I think of the forest as Force Awakens.
Really?
The snowy forest?
Yeah, right?
I'm right, guys, right?
Yeah, Force Awakens.
Yeah.
I don't know if I see...
Going up on your Star Wars.
Yeah. I mean, I'm really bad on
Star Wars.
That's surprising to me.
I'd never seen Doctor Who before I was in it.
I've never, yeah, I don't think I've sat through a whole Star Wars ever.
Are you kidding me?
Apart from a couple of the modern ones, yeah.
It's terrible, isn't it?
Strike the idea.
I'm getting booed.
No, no, no.
Strike the idea of you and I watching erotic thrillers together.
We're watching Star Wars together.
Yeah, and then we can watch Indecent Proposal Slinger and
was another one.
There's another great Demi Moore one.
Disclosure. Disclosure's good.
Classic.
Might be a little dated, but I remember enjoying it.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Let's do some rumor control.
Come on.
Over the years, you've been rumored for a few roles.
Been up for some.
I think this is true.
You were up for Watson in opposite Cumberbatchett's Sherlock.
Yeah, that's how I got the audition for Doctor Who.
Oh, okay.
So I go in to, you know, audition for Watson.
Did a brilliant job, if I say so myself.
And I remember in the day, they were like,
you're better for Sherlock Holmes.
And I was like, yeah, but Benedict's playing Sherbert Combs.
And then a couple weeks later, I got an audition for Doctor Who.
Got it.
So you never screen tested opposite Benedict?
No, no, no, no.
It was, I mean, can you imagine?
Well, it feels like you're too...
Watson and...
Yeah, you cut from the same cloth.
It's a little bit, right?
Well, yeah, I mean, he's brilliant, brilliant actor.
But it wouldn't have, you know, and Martin's so perfect.
Right.
Were you up for Newt Schmander and Fantastic Beast, or was that something you just wanted?
No, no, I'd never heard that.
No, no, that was never came, that was never nearly.
Is it true you were up for Joker at some point?
No, I wish.
You've heard that, though, that you were on a list for suicide squad or something?
No, no, I've never, that's never come my way.
I'd love to, I wish, you know, that's a great part.
Did you vibe with Jared, speaking of Joker?
I mean, he's got an unusual approach.
Yeah, look, Jared has a very, you know, sort of, it's like he's a method actor.
Yeah.
So I found it quite entertaining.
I did. I found it genuinely because I could, I just, I think.
Well, look at him over there, still on the crutches.
That's crazy.
Yeah, and I was just like, this is amazing.
Like, that takes balls, man.
And I love, you know, anyone that commits to that process or the process of acting that much.
I'm like, I'm quite interested in process, basically, and as an actor, more so than I am.
And each job, as an actor, sort of offers you a different way to behave.
No one's saying you have to do the same way every time, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So are you playing around with it?
Like, what's new in your...
What have you done recently or toying with doing differently for a role?
Well, I just did a film with Moorvid, pronounced correctly, Clark, who's glad, glad, glad.
Gladriel.
Gladriel.
Gladriel.
Have you ever watched Lord of the Rings?
Yeah, well, not yet.
I'm going to wait so I've got a few in front of me.
So I can, because I like to have back to back.
And I did a film with her and, you know, things like that, I just, you know, I stayed in the accent for like,
seven, eight weeks.
And it was pretty proper northern like that.
You're all right.
And all my mates are going, why are you fucking talking like that?
Actors.
Yeah, actors.
I know, actors.
You guys.
Are most of your mates actors?
No, none of them.
Really?
Actors are really, really desperately boring people.
And that's not true.
No, yes, some are.
I'm seeing Karen tomorrow.
Right.
You know, I've got lots of actor friends,
but my core group of friends
Couldn't give her monkeys.
Speaking of accents, I feel like I haven't seen you do American that much.
I've done a couple times.
Double time.
On stage more.
Yeah, I've done a couple of films.
Yeah, I'll do a film here.
You know.
And you enjoy the accent?
You enjoy your flat, sad accent, our boring.
I love it.
I love your accent.
I love this city.
You know, it's brilliant.
Where are you from?
Here, here in the city.
New York.
Yeah, really.
Can't you tell the toughness, the hard edges?
Like that.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Like a dock worker from like on the waterfront.
Yeah, yeah, I think this is just what a fabulous city.
I think like that Baz Luhrmann song,
Wear sunscreen. Have you heard that?
Yes.
Everyone should live in New York City once,
but leave before it makes you hard.
Everyone should live in LA once,
but leave before it makes you soft.
There you go.
There you go.
Any New York plans in the near long term future?
Not really.
Well, maybe.
Although I've got a dog.
Oh yes.
We didn't catch up on the dog.
How's your dog?
Well done. You've done that.
Yes, Josh.
How's your dog?
My dog, Lucy is lovely.
And Claire, since...
Has got a dog.
So here's the weird part.
And they go and walks together.
They have the same dog walker.
Okay.
I caught up with her, as I told you recently.
Yeah.
Okay, she would not tell me the name of the dog.
Raise that. Blank it out.
I'm gonna blank it out.
Blank it out.
Beep.
You will blank that out, won't you?
I will.
I promise I will.
But of all things to be secretive about,
the name of a dog?
Yeah.
Yeah, well, you know.
I thought we were closer than that.
Yeah, I know.
It's heartbreaking, isn't it?
It is heartbreaking.
I now know my limits with Claire.
It's good.
At least that's what you want from a good friendship.
Clear boundaries.
Boundaries.
What are ours?
Boundaryless.
This is the problem.
Who knows?
So Bobby's good, and Bobby has brought your joy and happiness.
A hero, yeah.
And yeah, I'd be lost without him, frankly.
I love him.
But my question is this.
Yes, go ahead.
Like living in New York, how do you run the dog?
Like my dog runs around a lot
And we've gone long walks over the heath and stuff like that
We give Lucy long walks
We live close to Central Park
So we're able to do that
We don't take Lucy off leash
Lucey was a rescue
You're very difficult in Newark City
Yeah she would
We would never see her again
She'd be like bye Josh
See ya forever
But thankfully we have some greenery around us
Good
It works out
Bravo
You mentioned the big birthday
It's coming up pretty soon
4O
I know man
How old are you
46
Damn, you're looking good.
That's the first time anyone has said that to me in that way.
You've got a good skincare regime, haven't you?
Oil the way, a bath of it every day.
Soak.
Cleanse, tone, moisture.
Yeah, they say, it's time for you to talk to Matt Smith and I rise.
Vampires, back to the, you know, yeah.
Big plans, this is going to be like a lot of the mates
or is it going to be you alone in an apartment crying?
No, I mean, not the latter.
My friends are sort of threatening.
to, you know, they want me to celebrate it somehow.
But I had a huge 30th and vowed never to throw another party again.
What happened? That sounds like a good party.
Well, it was a good party. Yeah, it was. It was a big party.
But it was, you know, it was frankly too stressful.
So I thought, no, fuck this. I'm not doing that again.
And so I don't know. I'll probably do something relatively low-key dinner or something like that.
Nothing major. Maybe go somewhere hot.
Put Bobby in a hat. I don't know.
Bobby's like, what's happening? It's my birthday.
It's my birthday.
Enjoy me.
I enjoy our random conversations, my friend.
Congratulations on the show.
Congratulations on introducing me to the movie actor game, which I'm now obsessed with.
Yeah, it's good that one.
It's going to be good.
We're going to play that in the future.
Yeah, 100%.
And it's good if you can find a sweet spot where people go, ooh, I don't know.
Yeah, who's in the middle?
Oh, you've got a lot of them.
Yeah.
William Defoe.
Actor.
Yeah.
To be continued.
We can do this all day.
Thank you, Matt.
Thanks, Matt.
And so ends another edition of happy, sad, confused.
