Lately, I've been trying to be more intentional about what I wear, intentional about everything,
just choosing pieces that feel effortless, still put together, timeless, but also not overthinking it
every morning. It's why I keep going back to quince. Their pieces just make getting dressed
easier and I feel so classy. I feel elevated. The fits are flattering. The fabric is really
high quality. Everything is wearable day to day. I actually got this really, really,
beautiful yellow V-neck midi dress from them, and I paired it with some Italian leather sandals.
It's one of those outfits that just works. It feels polished but still comfortable. It's exactly
what I've been looking for. What surprises me, though, is the quality for the price. Quince uses
premium materials like European linen, organic cotton, but they cut out the middleman. So
everything is priced way lower than you'd expect. Refresh.

This past weekend, Valentine's Day weekend, 26, in the middle of what should have been a celebration of talent, teamwork,
Childhood dreams, a devastating tragedy unfolded in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During a massive national cheer competition, surrounded by bright lights, proud parents,
thousands of athletes in Las Vegas excitement, a Utah mother took the life of her young
daughter before also ending her own.
The little girl's name was Addie Smith.
Her mother was Tanya McGeehan.
And what happened inside that hotel room has left.
the family's teammates and an entire cheer community in shock, me included. I couldn't believe
this when I read Edda. How does something like this happen at an event meant to showcase
hard work and hope? Competitive cheer is very intense, actually. It takes serious training. It
combines tumbling, gymnastics, stunting, and pyramids. And at only 11 years old, Addy was full of
talent and she was there to showcase her hard work and determination only to have it all taken away
her entire life taken away by the one person who was supposed to love and protect her.
So were there warning signs? That was the first question I had. What do we know? And just as importantly,
what do we not know about the years, months, days, and hours leading up to this heartbreaking act?
In this episode, we're walking carefully through the confirmed details. I want to take
a look at the timeline as well as some broader psychological questions that this case raises,
but do so carefully because behind this very shocking headline and tragedy is a young girl,
she showed up to compete, and she never went home. And a family absolutely shattered by this loss.
I think if we're going to try to understand this tragedy, we have to look at it fully,
the big picture. We have to look at it compassionately, but without turning away from some of
difficult questions it raises. I'm Lauren Matthias, and this is hidden true crime, where we search
to understand the hidden motives behind unimaginable crimes. This past Sunday morning at approximately
1045 a.m., Las Vegas Metro Police were called to a welfare check at the Rio Hotel, the well-known
Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, when 11-year-old Addy and her mother, Tanya, were unable to be located
after not showing up for Addy's cheer competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The night before, they had been seen at another Las Vegas hotel,
so people knew they were there for this major competition.
They were seen at the New York, New York,
but they had not been heard from since.
And it made no sense and was incredibly concerning
since they had traveled all this way for the competition
to just not show up, and no one could get a hold of them.
And so after officers arrived,
per the request for a welfare check, they alongside the Rio hotel security, they knocked and knocked.
They tried calling the hotel room multiple times. They received no response. And with no response and
nothing else to really go off of, officers then left the hotel after not being able to contact
Adi or Tanya and not getting an answer in their hotel room. But word began spreading quickly
throughout the cheer community that Addie and her mother were missing in Las Vegas.
They showed up for a cheer competition and then didn't make it to that competition.
Social media posts began flying around quickly in the Las Vegas area and across tons of social
media groups.
And that's actually when I caught word.
I caught word when a missing child and a mother in Las Vegas.
Wait, what?
They were there for a cheer competition and they just go missing.
They traveled all the way from Utah.
What's going on? They had checked into the hotel. Their car was there. They had been seen the night
before by teammates at the New York, New York, yet they were now impossible to find or locate.
This was clearly out of the ordinary. Something was off. Something was wrong. Addy and her mom lived
for these cheer competitions. Tanya's social media reflects how these cheer competitions truly were
their focus and joy. The mom and daughter thing that they
did. This was not something that would just happen. Addy's cheer gym even posted a message stating,
this is not the post we ever wanted to make. But we need the cheer community's help. One of our
athletes and her mom are currently missing in Las Vegas. They did not arrive to competition today,
and we have been unable to contact them. At this point, we are extremely worried. Please have
been contacted. If you have seen them, have any information or know anything at all, please call or
text immediately. Please share this post as widely as possible. Thank you, cheer fam.
And while the social media posts continue to rack up, those who personally knew Addy and her mom
continue to try and work with hotel security to locate them. So finally, finally, at 2.30 p.m.
After knocking and calling into the room, Hotel security finally decided to just go into the room.
they entered the room. And when they walked into that room, they were horrified because they were
met with a scene nobody wants to see. Both Addy and her mother were dead, both from gunshot wounds.
Police were called and the preliminary investigation, according to police, showed that Adi was shot
by her mother before Tanya then turned the gun on herself, leaving a note behind in the hotel room.
and no one near their room seemed to hear anything at all when it happened.
Strange, right?
At approximately 2.30 in the afternoon, security went back up to the room to attempt to locate
the mother and child again.
They knocked several times.
They also called into the room without success.
At that point of time, security decided to make entry into the room where when they entered
the room, they located two deceased females.
They immediately backed up and called 911.
Patrol arrived and secured the scene.
Homicide detectives have been notified and we're currently on scene investigating the crime.
It appears the preliminary details that we know so far are, it appears that the mother and daughter came here for in down for a dance competition or a cheer competition.
Sometime last night the mother shot her daughter and then shot herself.
shot herself. This is a sad and tragic incident and our hearts go out to the family.
And what was supposed to be a fun, exciting weekend showcasing Addie's hard work,
it turned deadly within an instant because of her mother's horrific choice.
A young, healthy athlete with her whole life ahead of her was killed.
And her mother, the woman responsible for the murder, then took her own life.
So when I first was reading about this case and learning what had happened, first there was a missing child and a mother.
And now all of a sudden learning their fate, I was actually myself in a hotel room in Utah, visiting family close to where Addy lived.
And I couldn't stop thinking about it.
It was one of those cases that didn't make any sense to me at all.
Because actually this type of filicide, which we do talk about filicide, a lot, a hidden true crime.
but this type of phylliside of an older child, this is uncommon for mothers.
So I immediately did some digging and then sat with it for a few days before deciding to talk about this and prep for this episode.
And in order to get a full picture of what happened and a potential answer as to why it happened,
I think it's important to go back to the start.
Because as I always say, to understand someone's story, you have to ask.
not just what happened, but how did we get here? So I've learned that Addie Smith was born to
Tanya McGeehan and Brad Smith in May of 2014 in Utah, and by late January of 2015, when Addy was
just a few months old, right? So she's born in 2014, late January, 2015, she's a few months old,
and Tanya files for divorce from Brad Smith. And thus,
began a year's long custody battle. Years, right? She's born in 2014. The divorce starts in 2015.
Guys, this went for years. A year's long custody battle that from the outside looking in,
I will say it seems to be pretty back and forth. Initially, Tanya was given the majority of custody of Addy.
And the schedule was that Addy would go to her father's every other weekend and then for a midweek visit.
And from social media posts that I've seen, it seems as if the split was not amicable.
Tanya took to private social media account sharing her own allegations against Brad.
In February of 2018, Tanya posted two emails that were allegedly from Brad.
The first one, Brad, and I'm going to quote this, or as much as I can, there's a few words I don't want to say.
Quote, I've told you easily four fucking times now that she's going to daycare, you stupid.
R word, C word, end quote.
Even in a quote, some words are hard for me to say.
But it was followed by another email two minutes later stating, quote, you are one jealous,
fat, ugly, stupid, C word of a bitch, end quote.
So Tanya posted that with the caption that partially read, quote, all because I asked him
if Addy was at daycare yet or not and if my mom could watch, end quote.
That's pretty upsetting to hear someone speak to someone like that.
But in July, especially the parent of your child, right?
I did not realize how much of my sheets were affecting my sleeve until I switched to Miracle Made.

In July of 2018, a contempt hearing was held after Tanya filed for contempt against Brad.
However, the two of them stipulated to an agreement about money he owed to Tanya for daycare costs.
support, attorney's fees, and health insurance costs. The court filing also states, quote,
petitioner may request an evidentiary hearing before the assigned judge regarding the respondent's
failure to comply with the parent. Time provision set forth in paragraph two of the decree of divorce,
which require that his midweek overnight ends at 8 a.m. the following morning and requires that he
be responsible for transporting the minor child to daycare or school following his midweek overnights,
and regarding respondents' failure to comply with the terms set forth in paragraphs 4, 5, and 6th of the parenting plan adopted in this matter, which require a civility, regular communication, and avoidance of disparaging, derogatory, and insulting comments regarding the other party, end quote.
And so, it seems that there were issues between them regarding money, and especially when it came to parenting time and daycare drop-offs.
then in November of 2019, Tanya made another post stating.
Here we go. Quote, I need advice.
I have no idea what to do since I am terrified of Brad.
Addy has now seen a therapist.
Today was her second time going.
The things Adi has been telling me in the last two weeks is awful.
They were at his girlfriend's kids' birthday party and Eddie wanted pizza like everybody
else.
And Brad told her she could only eat chocolate.
He didn't let her eat mac and cheese the day before.
for like the other kids were. She was told not to tell me. We all know she's never gotten bathed
over there and countless rashes because of it. The picture I posted on my other IG account of her
crying on FaceTime, I guess right when she got off the phone, Brad was telling her she'd see me
in 100 days. His girlfriend in the past has told her she's never going home. Every time Brad
leaves her alone with his girlfriend, she spanks Addie for no reason. And Addie says it's extremely hard.
I call it hitting, not spanking, because there is a difference. She's told to not tell Brad or me. I'm
beyond proud of Addy telling me. Anyways, today her therapist said to call CPS and tell them all of this,
which I know I need to, but I am so damn scared what Brad is going to do in retaliation to me and
Addy. Right now, I've already filed papers with the court to have his custody modified. He has 10
more days to respond otherwise. It defaults, and I get what I've asked for. I just,
kept make up my mind on calling CPS, end quote.
And this was followed by another post in January of 2020 that read,
Addie just now told me while she was with her dad for Christmas,
his girlfriend kept kicking her because,
shocker, Brad was passed out on the couch instead of supervising her like he was supposed to do.
Whole damn reason.
I was so pissed off when they amended the protective order to where she can be around Addie,
but not alone.
I knew damn well, which is why I mentioned it in court.
that Brad would be passed out and not do anything, end quote.
So from her side, from Tanya's side, it seems like things were abusive and that Addy was in danger.
Those posts are difficult to read.
However, months later, in late 2020, the court gave Brad sole custody of Addy stating,
here we go, quote, the court finds that it is in the best interest of the child for custody
to be charged on the basis that, A, petitioner, who is aty's mother, is subjecting the
child to behavior that is on the spectrum of parental alienation. B, petitioner has committed
domestic abuse in the presence of the minor child. C, that respondent demonstrates a better
understanding of the child's physical and emotional needs. D, that the testimony of Teddy
Poulson, which was submitted by declaration, is a basis to change to custody. E, that
responded demonstrates willingness to allow frequent and continuous contact between
petitioner and the child, F, the petitioner's co-parenting skills relating to appropriately
communicating with the other parent and encouraging the sharing of love and affection is
seriously in question based on the evidence and proffers that have been provided, end quote.
It further went on to state that Brad should have sole, physical custody on a temporary basis
and that Tanya could have supervised visitation.
So months later, in May, the schedule reverted to 50-50, with the court finding some pretty significant findings after a hearing.
So here is what the court documents read.
The court, having reviewed the file and the pleadings contained therein and having heard the proffer of the parties and argument of the counsel does find, recommend, an order as follows.
One, the court finds that neither party has provided income information to the court.
therefore the court is unable to address child support of this time.
Two, the court finds that at the time of the October 19th, 2020 hearing, modifying custody,
the court may not have articulated the specific goals and for the termination of supervised
parent time as required by statute.
Three, the court finds that the specific goal, which would have been specified, is that the
mother's proffered behavior needs to stop.
Four, the court finds, based upon affidavits of the court's approved supervisors filed with the court that petitioners proffered behavior, since entry of the order modifying custody and ordering supervised parent time has stopped.
Five, the court is concerned that the parent time exchanges are being videotaped by the child's stepmom, that this six-year-old is being watched like a convict or criminal.
Wild. Six, the court finds that the videotaping of parent time exchanges is not good for the six-year-old child, and it stops now.
Seven, the court finds that the parties are unable to engage in a civil parent time exchange.
Eight, the court finds that the parties have the ability to communicate enough to facilitate parent time.
Based upon the findings, the court does recommend and orders as follows.
Nine, the videotaping of the parent time exchanges by the child's stepmother is to stop now.
The child will not be subjected to being videotaped by her stepmother, her mother, her father, or any other third party other than the video surveillance at the police station.
10. Parent Time.
During the pendency of the petition for modification action will be,
week on, week off, 50-50, the court does so in order to avoid parental conflict, which it finds
poses an immediate and irreparable harm and is a basis to amend the previous temporary order.
11, parent time exchanges are to take place on Monday at the child's school.
The parent, ending parent time to drop the child off at school on Monday morning.
The parent commencing parent time to pick the child up from the school after school Monday
at time of release.
12. In the event that Monday is a holiday or school is out, parent time exchanges,
will take place at the Harriman Police Department.
13. The parties are to park at least five stalls away from the other,
and the child will walk between the parties.
14. There will be no communication between the parties,
or whoever is designated to do the parent time exchanges during parent time exchanges.
Any communication that is going to take place with respect to parent time will take place before or after parent time exchange so that the child is not involved.
15.
Virtual video parent time will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 p.m.
The parties are to ensure that the child is available for that parent time.
16. Virtual video parent time will not be recorded or monitored by anyone.
17.
The matters of child support and attorney fees are reserved for trial.

And months later, in August of 2021, Tanya and Brad were arguing over schooling and what schooling Addy would attend.
So Brad wanted to switch schools.
Well, Tanya did not. So here is what the court said about that. Petitioner's motion seeks to enforce
the current order of the court and alleges that respondent has unilaterally made a decision
regarding the minor child school that is in violation of that order. Respondent's motion,
possibly belatedly, seeks an order allowing respondent to change the minor child school because
respondent argues that he has been given temporary custody of the minor child and the change of school is
in the child's best interests. However,
Respondent's motion does not direct the court to the specific case or order upon which he
relies such that the court can evaluate the context or extent of those orders.
Accordingly, the court finds that it is appropriate to maintain what has been the status quo
in order to avoid potential ping pong orders regarding the minor child school.
The minor child shall remain at the school where she has attended in the past
until such time as a hearing is held on the party's competing motions, end quote.
And then finally, in May of 2024, so nearly two years ago, which is when the last filings were, May
2024, it seems that Tanya and Brad had come to an agreement when it came to the custody
schedule with Addie. It took a while, but May 2024, they come to an agreement.
And it would be one week on, one week off. All custody handoffs were to happen at school or at the Harriman Police Department if school was not in session, which, and if school wasn't, they needed, again, to park at least five stalls away from each other and allow Addie to walk herself to the other parent's car.
They also agree to only communicate via a parenting app called Our Family Wizard, which is a way the court can monitor messages going back and forth between parents and these really high conflict.
cases. They also agreed that no conversations about parenting issues, including child support,
would be had while Addie had phone conversations with the other parent. And when it came to major
issues such as health care, education, religion, Tanya was given final say if they could not
agree. However, if Brad really did not agree, he would be able to take it to court.
Rod was also ordered to pay $288 per month in child support, and as of May 2024,
he owed $9,672 in back child support and was to pay an extra $100 each month to catch up.
So that had been the schedule and rules for nearly two years.
And on paper, it looked like that while they didn't get along,
they had at least figured out how to amicably care for Addie. At least that's what it looked like
come May of 2024. And I think I'm laying all this out because I think there's been so much
confusion about this custody battle and people thinking it was sort of this current ongoing
custody battle. And let me be clear, it was high conflict. It went on for years. And so yes,
well, it seems that both parents had engaged in unhealthy behavior. And for years, I think it's
important to state, again, that there has been zero court filings since 2024. So again,
nearly two years since there's been any court filings. Now, does that mean they haven't
disagreed or argued or threatened each other outside of any court filings? No. But I don't know.
And that this custody battle, you know, I don't know if it's the sole motive for why Tanya did
what she did, in other words, despite some of the headlines implying it could be. Although,
if Tanya, let's say, was suffering with ideation, I do wonder if she was concerned about who Addy
would live with if she wasn't around. We simply do not know that's speculation. I want to be clear.
I can only say that custody issues had been ongoing for years, but there had not been any court
filings or dealings with custody for over a year, nearly two years. And there are a couple of other
important events that seem to have happened pretty recently that I think could have potentially
impacted things or at least played a part in this tragedy. The first one being Tanya's grandfather
passing away just last year and they seem very close. In April of 2025, Tanya made a post
saying, this is always one of my favorite pictures and has been on my fridge since.
I miss him so much already. He sure loved his grandkids and great grandkids. The other one,
we had stopped by on our way to a cheer competition in Vegas. And Addy told him, if she won,
she'd come back with a jacket and metal. She was so happy walking into his house wearing the
jacket and metal for getting first place, and it made Grandpa pretty happy to. Love you for
forever and always grandpa, end quote. Well, that cheer competition in Las Vegas happens to be the very
same one that was happening this past weekend in Las Vegas. So a year later. And from social media
posts, it seems that Tanya was very close to her grandfather and took his death very hard. And so to think
that this was that same competition, I can't imagine that she wasn't full of additional emotions.
and I wonder how that impacted her already fragile mental state. I don't know.
Another factor I want to bring up is something Tanya's mom had actually shared with the New York Post,
Connie. Connie is Tanya's mother. And she shared that Tanya and Addy had been living with her over the last few months.
She also shared that Tanya had dealt with depression her entire life,
but that it actually had seemed to be improving after settling the custody battle with Brad.
So again, another implication that this custody battle was in a good place, that it had been settled,
finally.
But more recently, her mother Connie shared that Tanya had been having issues with one or two of the other cheer moms
and that had gotten really bad over the last month.
And they were sending her some really mean texts.
Connie told the New York Post, and I'm going to quote,
Quote this. In the last competition, they had another girl got dropped, and some of the moms were saying it was because of Addy.
They were texting Tanya mean stuff and blaming Adi.
Cheer was her and Addie's life.
I think something happened the day before they died that made her spiral, end quote.
That's a frightening quote to think something happened the day before they died that made her spiral.
that this was not a planned decision that perhaps it was a quick decision, a tragic, horrific
decision.
So heartbreaking.
The article in the New York Post also says that according to Connie, Tanya seemed in good
spirits when they left for the cheer competition and had made gifts for the cheer team
members, bought new clothes for the trip and posted happy snaps of Addie doing backflips
in their hotel room at 5 a.m. on Sunday. They just looked like they were happy. But then there was
one pick of Addie and Tanya together. And I thought something doesn't look right. The look was off.
Something had happened. Something was off. She told the post through tears, end quote.
Again, sort of implying that this may have been an impulse decision, not one that was plotted or
planned. But Connie's story of the tension between cheer moms, it was corroborated by another source
who was familiar, very familiar with the tension as well. So Connie also shared that she had no
idea that Tanya had purchased a gun over a year again, had no clue her daughter had a gun,
let alone that she was taking it over state lines to a cheer competition in Las Vegas. It has been said
that Tanya left a note. And at the time of the article with the New York Post, Connie was
unaware of the contents of that note. So police had not released it yet. And while we don't know
for certain what that note contained, what took place in the hotel room or what led up to
everything happening, one thing is certain. This whole thing is a tragedy. Addy should have
been out competing with her teammates this past weekend, perhaps getting first place again.
thinking of her great-grandpa, but instead she lost her life at the hands of someone who should
have protected her. And at the same time, it seems very clear that Tanya was more than likely
dealing with major, major mental health issues leading up to this. And while there's no excuse
for a mother, harming, their children, never, I do think the understanding the background
of these crimes. It is important to understand the full context of someone's suffering,
especially so that we can see the warning signs. Because what I've learned again and again
in covering crime is it always seems so unexpected. But hindsight is 20-20,
and I think it's important to point out, shoulda, coulda, would have, what were the warning
signs? We can only hope that Addie was sleeping or doing something where she was simply unaware,
about what was about to happen to her, that's my hope. You know, I can only hope. It's heartbreaking to
think of a potential situation in what she knew what was coming and was scared. But I hope, I do,
I hope she was asleep. At the end of the day, two people have lost their lives in a horrific way,
two families, both Addie's paternal side and maternal side, are grieving major losses.
And so many children and the cheer community is grieving the loss of their sweet friend
Addie and in a horrific way.
Addie is remembered for her sweet smile, the fun personality, her extraordinary hard work,
her dedication, always being the first to practice and the kindness that she showed to others.
We want to help.
Emily Morgan has owned Utah Fusion All-Stars for the past 19 years.
She coached Addie Smith during her first year of cheer.
She would learn her part.
She took a lot of pride in what she was doing.
And I mean, as a coach, that's the dream.
And because of that attitude, I always knew that she was going to go far in this experience.
The tight-knit cheer community came together to mourn on Monday night with grief counselors on hand and heavy hearts trying to cope.
How are you guys holding up?
It's been difficult for sure. I think that in cheerleading, you need every single person on your team.
And if they're not there, there's a void. And I think that everybody feels out void, whether you're on her team right now or you've been on her team before.
Support also came from friends and strangers online, as many posted sending their love and prayers to her family and this community.
Addie's former teammates here made signs and tributes and then took them over to her most recent gym, Utah Extreme Cheer, to show their support and love.
Her example and her light is going to be a presence, probably in the cheer community.
I know in our cheer gym for sure, but in the cheer community for a long time.
