here. It was Sunday, August 30th, 2026, and John Hayes called 911 to report that his five-year-old daughter, Saylor, had suddenly just disappeared. It was barely noon, and the Hayes family of five were actually on a vacation, and they were getting ready to go to the beach. They were vacationing in Polly's Island, South Carolina, and this was supposed to be a fun family trip. But when Sailor, who had autism and a reported history of wandering ran off. That day of family fun quickly turned into chaos and panic as police raced to the families of vacation rental to help find the blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl. Luckily, though, Sailor was said to be wearing a project lifesaver bracelet, which is a wearable tracking device for at-risk individuals, a device intended for exactly

this type of scenario to quickly locate children with autism and adults, actually, with cognitive conditions. But unfortunately, police would soon discover that finding Sailor wasn't going to be that easy. And her parents, well, they seem to not be very helpful when it came to finding Sailor, which has now led to many of us to ask why, including me. So, we've done what we always do in cases of this gravity. We have dug deep and have uncovered startling secrets and hidden revelations. Stick with me as I lay it all out. My name is Lauren Matthias and this is hidden true crime. So let's go over everything we know so far about this heartbreaking case. Before we get into the investigation, let's talk about the Hayes family. John and Jordan

Hayes got married on May 5th, 2021, just a few months after they had their first child, Sailor, in March of that same year. So just after Sailor was born. And that in itself isn't out of the ordinary, right? But it seemed like John and Jordan aren't really your typical marriage. John, age 70, was born in 1955. And while Jordan, age 31, was born in 1995, that's a 40-year age difference, which is fine. Look, a lot of people are in age gap relationships. I realize that I'm just pointing it out because it does seem like something the haze are very proud of. They talk about it a lot, actually. They make TikTok videos together showing daily life as an age gap couple with John's showing what it's like to be in his 70s and a father of three children under the age of six

because, yes, they did go on to have two more children, Jackson in 2022 and Max in 2023. On John's Facebook and LinkedIn, it says that he works at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is also the owner of what he calls the world's largest Ferrari and Maserati salvage yard called Ferrari Mountain. In addition to that, John and Jordan have another business, breeding and selling Yorkie puppies. They live in a modest but secluded home in a heavily wooded area on Golden View Drive in Bristol, Virginia. But Jordan is ordinarily from Tennessee, and that's where her family, including her mother Lisa and siblings live. But based on things Jordan has posted, it doesn't seem like she has a very strong relationship with her mom. In this TikTok,

in particular, it says that her mother couldn't even tell you what day her children were born. And while we can't know everything from social media, it seems like John and Jordan really focused on their family unit. For 70 years old, John appears to be a very active father, playing with the kids, teaching them things, cooking, and all in all, they seem like a normal, happy family. But again, looks can be deceiving as we've learned time and time again. So going back to audits. August 30th, like I said, the family was on vacation in Polly's Island, which is located in Georgetown County, South Carolina. It's a four-mile-long barrier island known for being very relaxed, uncrowded, and rustic. It's separated from the mainland by a salt marsh and accessible

by two short causeways. The Hayes family was staying in a rental home that John mentioned was owned by a friend. The home was located on Old Wackama Drive and a neighbor. called Hagli Estates, which you can see is very close to the Wackama River here. And, well, according to John, that morning the family was getting ready to go to the beach. And if you've ever been to the beach with kids, you know that scene can be a little chaotic. Getting the kids in their swimsuits, getting all the gear together, toys, towels, chairs, sunscreen, snacks, loadies, coolers, on and on. then getting three small children buckled in, you can almost picture how that morning was going.

John has said that they got Sailor buckled in, and then he went inside to grab a few last-minute items. But when he came back, Sailor was gone. Now, it's not clear whether Jordan was with John or getting the other kids ready, or what? We'll talk about why in a bit. But as John put it, sailor was gone in a split second. Now, let's listen to the full 911 call placed at 1141 a.m. That morning. Georgetown, 20, 911. I need help. My little four-year-old, five-year-old girl is very autistic. Just escaped. I'm at 76 Walk-A-Mall Drive. She took off. I need help finding her, please. 76, Walk-a-Mall drive as soon as possible. I don't say her anywhere.

Is it old Walk-a-Maw drive? Yes. Okay. And you said she's five years old? Yes. She's autistic. She's very autistic. Okay.

She white, black, Hispanic. White, brown hair, green eyes. What's she the last wearing, sir? I think she's wearing her bathing suit. What color? Sort of bluish. Sir, what's your name? Sailor.

Okay. Okay. Okay. I'm talking to them right now. The plate in. Okay. She's autistic. I told them. Are they coming? They're on their way. All right. Thank you. I'm getting more information from you, though, okay? Okay. I need to look for her. I can't give any more.

Okay. I need to go look at the water. I've got to look around, ma'am. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I got to find her. Yes, but I need to. I need to. I can have a better location, okay? Well, she doesn't talk. Okay. She's nonverbal. She's nonverbal.

That's the problem. Does she come to her name, which is called? Not really. Half the time. No, not really. I don't think she would go out of here. I really don't. Where was you like that?

We were getting ready to go to the beach. We had her in the car buckled in, and I went inside to get her juice and some more stuff. I came back out. She's gone. I'm going to split second. It was buckled in. That's good. Did you find her?

No. My wife's taken off to go find her. Okay. Do you have a favorite spot near there that she could possibly go to? No, we're just staying here. It's a friend's house. Let me stay here. Wow.

Maybe. I know she's not. You can call me back. Okay. Okay, sir, give me your phone number. 276. One of those first is a house. 10%. Maybe she went to five.

Okay. Now, the first thing I noticed was that her dad explained Sailor as having brown hair and green eyes, yet the sheriff's office chose to update Sailor's description and described her as having blonde hair and blue eyes. You can also hear in the call that John, sounds very worried about the water, that they need to guard the water. Go look in the water. Because like I mentioned before, Sailor had autism. Actually, what our parents referred to as severe autism. She was nonverbal and was said to have a history of eloping and beyond a last minute marriage, eloping in this

context means running off. Children with autism notoriously love water. And Sailor was no different. In fact, in a Facebook post made by Jordan, she described getting in inflatable water slide as one of the best things that they had purchased because of how much Sailor loved the water. There were also dozens of photographs of the family at the beach with Sailor having a great time playing in the sand and in the water with her floaties. So it makes sense to think that a child who loves water and has a history of eloping would immediately take off in that direction. Police arrived about 10 minutes after that 911 call and officially announced that sailor was missing at 1231 p.m. Obviously, the first place police needed to search were the nearby waterways, but there were also other concerns. In this interview with local reporters outside the rental home, Jordan says that Sailor had a habit, a habit of going into other people's homes

and heading straight for their refrigerator. I said, you know, she's a drive to the cars, and she likes to go in people. I mean, she would go into my house, you know, she loves food. She's always wanted the refrigerator. She has kind of like a habit of that. They feel better. The community is rare.

Yeah, you know, thank you. A young, vulnerable girl going into a stranger's home is a very scary thought. And just one of the possibilities police were working with. But like I also mentioned before, John and Jordan immediately told police that Sailor was equipped with that project life savor device. That gave investigators some hope that locating her might not be as difficult as it would be with other children who wander off. but let's quickly talk about Project Lifesaver and what it does. So Project Lifesaver uses personalized radio frequency transmitters worn as a bracelet or inklet,

and it's used to help law enforcement quickly track and locate individuals with cognitive conditions like autism and Alzheimer's. The client wears a small waterproof transmitter that emits a continuous unique radio frequency signal. It relies on radio waves, rather than satellite GPS, meaning it doesn't track individuals constantly from a remote computer, which helps keep their daily lives private. If a person goes missing rescue teams, you specialize mobile locator antennas and receivers to pick up that specific frequency.

So as officers move closer to the transmitter, the audio signal or meter reading on the receiver intensifies guiding them right to the individual. Antennas are used to scan the area and can be handheld, mounted to cruisers, or even used on helicopters. And since rescuers are tracking a direct signal, the average rescue time is typically under 30 minutes. However, there are some drawbacks that I learned about from this mom's TikTok video. Let's talk about the fact that she did have Project Lifesaver. And so a lot of people are questioning why it wasn't working or why it took so long. So they were on vacation in South Carolina. That was not where they were from. So the way Project LifeSaver Works is not all counties participate in Project Lifesaver. So I know from experience

because my daughter has it. When we travel out of state or out of the county, we are supposed to notify our local sheriff's department, let them know where we're going to be staying, and then also contact the sheriff's department for where we're going to be and just let them know like, hey, we're vacationing. You know, our daughter is on Project Lifesaver. If there's an emergency, that way they have her contact information. And as soon as we call in, they can dispatch the right people. So if these people did not do that, then it's going to take a little bit longer because by the time law enforcement found out she had Project Lifesaver and then contacted the right county that actually participated, then there's travel time included. Project Lifesaver only works

within a one mile radius of where the child is. So the way the transmitter works or the ping works is you have to be within one mile of that child. So if they were searching by the house where they were staying, it's only going to pick up that radio frequency within one mile of where the child is. Now, if her project lifesaver is defective, it's also not going to work. If the battery needed to be changed or if there was an issue with the device in general, it's not going to work. So there's a lot of stipulations that come with Project Lifesaver. It's not just like, oh, she has this tracker, like notify somebody and they instantly find them. That's not how it works. So you can find out more about Project Lifesaver by going to ProjectLafaver.org, but also let's not make

assumptions until we know the actual facts. So as she said, not all counties participate. And the first thing police needed to do was make sure they had the equipment to actually utilize the device. They also had to hope that Sailor hadn't been picked up by a car or something and been taken farther than the one mile radius. So at 2.25 p.m., the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said that they were actively using Project Lifesaver equipment to try to pinpoint Sailor's location. Canines and deputies were searching the neighborhood while deputies and deputies and the fire department conducted coordinated drone searches. A code red alert had been also sent to neighboring homes. And by 3.10 p.m. that afternoon, a helicopter with project lifesaver equipment

arrived in the area and began trying to detect a general signal from sailors' transponder. It's not exactly clear how long they attempted to use the lifesaver equipment, but they eventually realized that they were not picking up a signal from any device. And at that point, Georgetown County contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Virginia where the Hayes family is from and requested more information about her transmitter. Washington County provided sailors' specific assigned frequency and other information to assist with the search. But after they were still unable to detect her device, Georgetown asked Washington County personnel to check the family's home and right, right when they got to the family's residence,

they immediately, immediately detected sailors' frequency. In other words, her lifesaver device was located in a vehicle on the family's property. So it had not been with her at all. And that's very strange because, as this officer explained, the project lifesaver device is not meant to be easily removed. I don't know it's like Kevlar, strands, and everything inside of this. And it has to be cut off with a pair of scissors or a knife or something. Once it's a one-way clasp, once that is pressed, it's on there.

It's not coming off. So why? Why was Sailor's device cut off? And why did her parents insist that she was. was wearing it. They would have had to have known that they removed it, especially since it's difficult to take off, especially for a little child. It's not really something you just forget doing. Also, we can see videos of Sailor from the night before she went missing, and there were also photos of her without anything on her ankle. You would think that would be something her parents

would have known and noticed. And according to investigators, the last time Sailor's device pegged was on August 11th. But that wasn't the only bizarre thing that started to make people question if there could be something more going on here. I showed a brief snippet of the interview Jordan did outside the rental home, but now I'm going to play the whole thing. I said, you know, she's a drive-to-the-cars, and she likes to go in people. I mean, she would go into my house, you know, she loves food. She's always going to the refrigerator. She has kind of like a habit of that. But they feel better.

The community is around. Yeah. You know, that's the whole trying. I know. We looked on the camera. We didn't see her. We saw at 1137, we walked that way and just see when she was missing on the car, you know, and we didn't see her on the camera.

We just saw me and my husband going that way to look. It was right when I saw her not in the car, I ran toward the river. You know, I mean, two minutes. So I don't know. And the dog got her this way. I'm just praying. I don't know, you know, that she's somewhere and she fell asleep maybe. Yeah.

guys, I appreciate it. Excuse me, ma'am. Yeah. I'm Scott Harper. We gab news in Georgetown? Yeah. Can I get a couple of comments from you? No, I don't want to say anything else.

So you can't say what was happening yesterday when she went missing? No, they can't come up to something. Thank you. A lot of people have pointed out that Jordan seems a little off in that video. First of all, I can't imagine please telling the family of a missing child not to talk to the media, especially. especially in circumstances like this. The public helps to find a missing child. The second thing is that in the video,

it kind of sounds like Jordan says that she saw sailor take off toward the river. But others hear it differently and think that she said that she ran toward the river when she realized that sailor wasn't in the car. So again, it's not clear where exactly she was when sailor disappeared from that vehicle. and this is not a fact, but some, some people think that she looks to be under the influence of something,

not a fact, not a fact. And the more the internet, though, has uncovered about these parents, I will just say, the more plausible that does sort of seem, because this wasn't John and Jordan's first time having law enforcement involved in their lives. We have information and court talks that say that in July of 2023, Saylor, who was two years old at the time, and her brother Jackson, who was one-year-old, were removed from John and Jordan's care. After the removal, DSS conducted a here follicle test on the children. Saylor tested positive for methadone, while Jackson tested positive for methamphetamine and methadone. DSS did a drug screen on John and Jordan as well, and John tested positive for methadone,

while Jordan tested positive for methamphetamine and methadone. Both parents did have methadone clinic cards, but when asked how the children were exposed, they stated that they didn't know how the children have been exposed to those substances. There were also reported 911 call history to their address when the couple had stated that one or the other was using meth and drugs and that they needed police assistance due to that drug use. They were both charged with two class six felony counts of charges and disregard for life. They entered pleas of no contest and received a deferred disposition with two years of supervised probation, and then the charges were dismissed earlier this year, 2006.

But then, literally, just days after the charges were dismissed, Jordan was arrested again. The affidavit says that, quote, on 216, our office recorded a call in relation to a male trying to locate his wife who he stated had their baby and had relapsed on meth and was possibly broke down. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle which contained a female, Jordan Hayes, and a juvenile, MH. The vehicle had run out of gas. and was therefore not running. I arrived second unseen and observed Mrs. Hayes in the driver's seat of the vehicle acting emotionally. The female was also very easily agitated. We attempted to conduct, filled sobriety testing on the female, but could not get through the test due to her erratic and agitated behavior.

I observed that the female's pupils were dilated and non-reactive to light. I observed while speaking to her that her. her speech seemed to be accelerated and slurred, and she was also not able to stand still for long and was unsteady on her feet. All signs that she was possibly under the influence of a narcotic. The female stated she had been gone all day. The husband had stated she left around 1 p.m. The child was located in the back of the vehicle with no heat running, with the ambient temperature being 35 degrees Fahrenheit outside. The female stated she had been trying to call tow trucks

but would not provide her exact location to her husband or deputies who talked to her, end quote. So Jordan is also currently facing a cruelty and injuries to children charge contribution to the delinquency of a minor and public intoxication for that incident. Those were the things investigators were learning about. when trying to determine what happened to Sailor. And unfortunately, unfortunately, the search ended in the worst way possible. On Monday, August 31st, Sailor's body was found. The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said agents with the Department of Natural Resources

located her little body at around 9.45 a.m. in the water. And even though hundreds of people and multiple agencies had searched for her, she was located in the Wackamaw River near the area where she was last seen. At around 4 p.m. that same day, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said there were no visible signs of trauma and the cause and manner of death remained undetermined pending her autopsy, which actually happened on Friday, and we'll get more into that in just a bit. As you can imagine, this case quickly blew up on social media with people either feeling sympathetic towards these two parents who had just lost their little girl while others were outraged.

Some people commented on the fact that they left Sailor alone in a car near water knowing she had a history of elopement or running away. Others wondered, especially given Jordan's behavior in that interview video, if they had relapsed on drugs. And then there were people wondering even worse things, which we'll get into again, also in just a bit. But another thing people were pointing out was that just hours, hours after finding out that Sailor had been found dead, that her body had been found. John and Jordan reportedly went out to eat. They were spotted at Graham's Landing restaurant located in Merle's Inlet, which is about a 20-minute drive away from the rental home.

Now, everyone has to eat. But that just kind of seems pretty surprising to be able to go and sit down at a restaurant when you literally just found out that your child is dead. I mean, I think a lot of people would have a hard time understanding that. And one reporter named Daniel Carter, who spoke to Jordan in that original interview, said that Jordan told him that the sheriff's office

had confiscated the phones of both her and her husband. She also said that they had been ordered not to leave the home. Now, it's not clear if that was because they had not yet located sailor or what, but after she was found, the hazes clearly weren't planning on sticking around. Deputies were made aware that the hazes had plans to travel from South Carolina to a residence in Carter County, Tennessee, which is where Jordan, again, has a lot of family members.

But during the same time, investigators were also working on obtaining arrest warrants for what they believed was done or what wasn't done to keep Sailor safe. Tennessee deputies watched the couple's SUV arrive at the home and confirmed that the South Carolina warrants were active with extradition authorization. Deputies then pulled in behind the vehicle and identified the driver as John Hayes with Jordan Hayes in the passenger seat. They were both arrested without incident. Both parents were charged with one count of being a fugitive from justice for a crime in another state and were transported to the Carter County Detention Center where they were being held without bond pending Thursday's extradition hearing. But now, let's read the arrest warrant for exactly why investigators believe they should be arrested in the first place. The charges are unlawfully placing a child

at risk of causing harm or willfully abandoning the child. The arrest warrant says, quote, on 830, 2026, in the Polly's Island section of Georgetown County, the responsible caregivers allegedly placed the child at an unreasonable risk of harm affecting her life and safety by failing to provide supervision and safeguards appropriate for a severely nonverbal autistic five-year-old child with known affinity to water and history of elopement. The child had been equipped

with a monitoring device since 2024. However, the device had been removed prior to leaving the state of Virginia. The child was subsequently left unsupervised within approximately 15 meters of a body of water. And after the child was discovered missing,

the defendants encouraged search efforts to be directed toward the use of tracking technology, despite knowing that the child was not wearing a monitoring device. The defendant's further directed search efforts away from the nearby body of water, end quote. So we already knew that John and Jordan told investigators that Sailor was wearing her tracker when she wasn't.

But now to learn that they were actually directing search efforts away from the water. That's opened up even more questions, right? To people's homes, to a refrigerator in a stranger's home. given that there weren't any outward signs of trauma on Sailor's body. Some people think it's very likely that she did simply wander away and drown. But others have wondered if this could be another situation, like back in 2023 when Sailor and her brother tested positive for drugs,

they wonder and speculate that if she could have gotten into her parents' stash, passed away, and then John and Jordan placed her in the water to make it look like an accidental drowning. or some speculate they were using, which is why they left her in the car, or maybe this really was an accident with their judgment clouded by substance use. We don't know. And we're going to have to wait for the full autopsy results that won't be ready for weeks. But as a Friday, the preliminary results do have information. And the preliminary results say that during the initial examination of Sailor's body,

of what I'm going to say has to deal with both of them. But just consider her unrepresented at this moment, Judge. John is 71 years old. He lives in Bristol, Virginia. He went to some college, and he's an investment property.

That's basically what he does for a living. He invests in properties and fixes him up and things like that. He's had a long life filled with other jobs and other careers as he's 71 years old. But for right now, that's what he primarily focuses on. They were in town visiting a close friend of John's, who was actually at the house that day as well. And Your Honor, as far as record goes, everything that I've talked to John about has been deferred. or deferred intervention was taking place on many of the stuff that took place with both of them. But especially with John, you won't see much on his record, especially by way of anything violent.

They're not a flight risk, judge. They were not told that they couldn't leave. When they encountered the police in another state, they went voluntarily. They volunteered to be extradited back to this area. they want to fight these charges. They've gone through something horrific. And we believe that they're entitled to a reasonable bond judge. And, you know, at this moment, they're charged with unlawful neglect of a child, abandoning a child,

essentially taking their eye on the child. That's what they're charged with. As far as danger of the community goes, John is particularly the one I've been focused on. He has no charges where he's ever been in danger to. to anybody in the community, other than the allegations that they took place with him and his wife with her kid. But in that situation, John called CPS. He called them to the scene. I mean, these aren't people who are hiding anything or individuals who are going to run or be a danger to the community judge.

So we just respectfully request a decent bond that they can get out on. And, of course, they have a funeral coming up and they'd like to get out to plan that and deal with the situation. because it is a tragedy on. Very good, Mr. McCoy. and represent John I don't want to make a conflict between the parties there might be no conflict between the parties but at this point we'll look out for legal purposes representing John I would ask the court for the PR button to let them get out there are people they don't have much means and they want to stand up this was an accident You know, the way the media wants to portray it, or the way the newspapers want to portray it, or the radio, isn't what it was. It was an accident. And we went before to understand that. We came down here for John this morning because they have a funeral point to come up and they want to get back to their family.

I would think the court has John's criminal record in front of them. We don't have it. But according to John, we don't think they're in danger. We don't think he's a danger. We would ask the court to actually release them. I would ask for a PR bond. The court needs maybe a reasonable surety bond, but we will represent him fully.

We will represent John. He's the third fully on this case. Very good. Well, respectfully, there's no way on this earth that I'm going to grant a PR bond on this tax warrant. That's not going to happen on my watch. All right, due to the egregious nature of these charges and the past criminal history,
