Starting point is 00:02:18 Protect yourself now atora.com slash remove. A preacher's wife found dead in the swamps of North Carolina. Authorities quickly ruled it self-harm. But those closest to her, and many, many watching from the outside never fully accepted that narrative. And even here at Hidden True Crime, we had questions. And that included doing a full backstory, a deep dive that you can find in the description of this episode. Micah Miller wasn't talking about ending her life at the time of her death. Rather, she was talking about starting over.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Friends say she was preparing to begin a new chapter as a soon-to-be divorced woman and not bringing everything to an end. And as the curtain was slowly pulled back on Micah's life with her husband, preacher John Paul Miller, are also known as JP, a much darker picture emerged, one marked by abuse, coercive control, stalking, and fear. And while investigators continue to main, that Micah's death was self-inflicted, many of us held onto the hope that John Paul would one day be forced to face accountability in some form, somehow. Well, today, it appears that
Starting point is 00:03:33 that moment may finally be coming. Before we get into today's updates, let's quickly go over what we've covered so far in the case of Micah Miller here at Hidden True Crime. Again, if you haven't had a chance to watch our deep dive we put out around a year ago regarding this case, I'll put a link in the description of this episode so you can catch up there. But as a refresher, 30-year-old Micah Miller was found deceased on April 27, 2024, in Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina. That's about an hour and a half from her home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And according to law enforcement, the 911 call reporting the incident came from inside the park
Starting point is 00:04:12 and was placed by Micah herself. In the released audio, the caller states she planned to take her own life. Robinson County 911. What's the address of your emergency? Hi. Are you able to trace the location of my phone? Um, let me see.
Starting point is 00:04:37 You don't know where you're at. A national park. What's the phone number you're calling me from? 843-655-5-2-442. Where's the park? located at? In Fair Bluff. I have my location on, I think, on my phone.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Find my phone is on. I just did my share of my location. Okay, I'm showing, hold on one second. I don't think you are in Robeson County. Are you at the Lumber River State Park? Yeah, that's where I am. Okay. Tell me what's, um, happen.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Um, I'm about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me. Okay, ma'am, just listen to what I'm seeing, okay? Let me make sure I got the exact location where you're at, okay? Just one minute. When deputies arrived, Micah was found dead from what authorities ruled a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Not long after her death, public learned who Micah was beyond this horrible tragedy. She was widely described as as kind, very kind, deeply faithful, service-oriented, and incredibly involved in her church community.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Micah was active in youth programs, helped women and children, and was known by many as someone who uplifted everyone around her. Fellow congregants at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach called her one of the nicest people you could ever meet. But almost immediately, questions began to surface largely centered around Micah's husband, pastor John Paul, also known as J.P. Miller, the senior pastor at Solid Rock Church, and the man, Micah, had been actively divorcing. John Paul was the one who announced Micah's death to the congregation. Many found that announcement unsettling. The sermon struck some as insensitive, me included. And he concluded, by instructing congregants to leave immediately after that shocking announcement.
Starting point is 00:08:03 By the way, my wife is dead. But leave immediately, and then he told them not to mingle afterward. That moment alone sparked widespread concern and scrutiny. We're not going to do an altar call today. Instead, I'm going to have you stand up and I'm going to make an announcement. And after the announcement, I'm going to ask that you leave church quietly and don't talk about the announcement here in the building, please, if you can. So y'all can stand to your feet.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Before I make the announcement, I also want to say that my request to you is that you will continue to come to church and serve and give for the next, you know, a little bit. I don't want to have, I'm taking a little bit of a break and I don't want to have to worry about the church. My break may be a few days, a few weeks, I don't know. I got a call late last night. My wife has passed away. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:56 It was self-induced. and it was up in North Carolina. And we're going to have a funeral for her next Sunday here at 3 p.m. And so it's all I can, yeah, I'm just kind of going on adrenaline right now. So y'all pray for me and my kids and everybody. And she was, she wasn't, y'all knew that she wasn't well mentally. And that she needed her medicine that was hard to get to her. And then came Micah's obituary, allegedly written by her husband, John Paul, JP,
Starting point is 00:09:26 which raised even more red flags. because it included language emphasizing Micah's devotion, not just to Jesus Christ, but to her husband, JP, praising him as, quote, the best preacher in the world. To many, it read as self-centered and inappropriate. Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:09:45 And especially given the circumstances. So then as John Paul began giving interviews, he publicly claimed Micah struggled with self-harm tendencies. But Micah's family strongly disagreed, and they didn't stay silent. Just one week after Micah's death, her sister Sierra filed court documents requesting to be named special administrator of Micah's estate. And in those filings, Sierra laid out a disturbing pattern of alleged abuse, control, and fear. She stated that Micah had confided in her repeatedly about physical, emotional, and spiritual
Starting point is 00:10:23 abuse by John Paul. Micah told family members she believed she was being followed, and later, John Paul admitted in a sermon that he had hired a private investigator and placed tracking devices on her car. Sierra also alleged that while Micah was hospitalized in February 24, John Paul removed her personal belongings, interfered with her digital accounts, and that evidence Micah had gathered for her divorce, including documents and files, disappeared and was not. never recovered. Most chillingly, Sierra stated that Micah told multiple people, including family members, quote, if I end up with a bullet in my head, it was not by me, it was JP, end quote.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Micah served John Paul divorce papers on April 25th, 2024. Two days later, she was dead. Two days later. Police records further complicate the narrative because in March of 2024, Michael reported her tires had been slashed twice in one week, and officers confirmed that a tire deflation device was found evidence. Later that same day, Micah contacted police again after discovering a tracking device on her car. She named a suspect and told officers she feared for her life.
Starting point is 00:11:40 However, no charges were filed due to, quote, insufficient evidence. John Paul has acknowledged hiring a private investigator and placing trackers on Micah's vehicle claiming he feared she would buy a gun. But notably, he didn't say that he feared she would harm herself if she purchased a weapon, only that she might harm him or sell some of their shared assets. Micah and John Paul met when she was a teenager in the church youth group and a nanny, by the way, to his children with his first wife. And at the time, he was in his late 20s. They married in 2017. Micah filed for separation and support multiple times beginning in 20203 and filed for divorce twice. Once in October of 23 and again, again, just days before her death, two days before her death. And in those filings, she alleged infidelity, public humiliation from the pulpit, financial abuse, and being
Starting point is 00:14:46 locked out of her own home. In February of 2024, Micah was hospitalized for mental health treatment. John Paul claimed she was having a psychotic break and alleged she wasn't taking her medication, claims her family firmly denies. During this time, divorce filings were dismissed, and John Paul reportedly took control of Micah's car keys to control of her purse and personal property. Friends and family say Micah's mental health struggles were exaggerated and weaponized. against her. And as public attention grew, more allegations surfaced. John Paul's ex-wife submitted sworn statements alleging longstanding sexual misconduct, including affairs with church members, some of whom were minors, affairs with minors. She claimed John Paul admitted to these actions that
Starting point is 00:15:36 church leadership failed to remove him and that law enforcement declined to pursue the matter at the time. A timeline leading up to Micah's death highlighted troubling sermons about obedience. and religious authority, mental illness, wealth, submission, and betrayal, often aligning closely with Micah's attempt to leave the marriage. And in the days before her death, Micah also alleged one final act of abuse. John Paul posted explicit, private photos of her online as retaliation for filing for divorce. In other words, revenge porn. He later admitted to doing so in an email to Micah calling the act evil and apologizing for trying to hurt her.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Despite all of this, the Robinson County Sheriff's Office concluded that Micah's death was self-harm. And their timeline shows Micah purchasing a handgun on the day she died, traveling alone and placing the 911 call herself. But witnesses in the park reported hearing crying before the single gunshot. crying before that gunshot, although investigators later determined that John Paul was out of town at the time of Micah's death, out of town with a woman he was having a long time affair with.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Her name is Susie, and he was allegedly at a sporting event with her. We'll get into more of that on just a bit. Well, Micah's family disputes those conclusions and has continued to push for a deeper investigation. They argued that Micah was planning for the future, shipping belongings overseas, missions were and setting court days and actively preparing for life after divorce. They suggested
Starting point is 00:17:18 that AI artificial intelligence was used for that 911 call that was made allegedly by her, and that the handgun purchase she made was for her protection because she was afraid and she was being stalked and threatened. The case eventually drew federal attention and authorities later confirmed they had contacted both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office. And since then, the investigation has remained open at the federal level. And that's where things stood, right? So now let's talk about what's happened and why this case is once again back in the spotlight. The case has taken a major turn. A federal grand jury in South Carolina has formerly indicted John Paul Miller, and the charges are serious. Cyberstocking and making false statements
Starting point is 00:18:10 to federal investigators. According to prosecutors, this wasn't a brief or isolated situation. They allege that beginning in November of 2022, more than a year before Micah's death, John Paul engaged in a sustained pattern of harassment that continued right up until April 27, 24, the day she died. Federal authorities say that during that time, Micah was subjected to repeated unwanted contact. In some instances, John Paul alleged, contacted her dozens of times in a single day. The indictment claims he interfered with her finances, disrupted her daily life, and even tampered with her vehicle, including damaging her tires and using a device designed to slowly release air. Investigators also alleged that John Paul
Starting point is 00:18:58 placed tracking devices on Micah's car and sought out information about her vehicle through people with access to state registration records. At one point, prosecutors say he posted a nude picture of Micah Online without her consent. And another key allegation involves surveillance. According to the indictment, John Paul believes Micah was having an affair and that he hired a private investigator to monitor her movements because of that affair.
Starting point is 00:19:28 But when questioned by law enforcement months later, he allegedly minimized or denied aspects of that conduct, which is where the second charge comes in. Federal prosecutors say he made false statements during interviews, including about the damage to her vehicle and damage to her tires despite evidence suggesting otherwise. And really, let's talk about projection here for a little bit, this alleged affair Micah was having, the absurdity of claiming Micah was having an affair because it's now well known
Starting point is 00:19:57 that it was JP who was having an affair when Micah died. We also know of several other affairs. We just heard affairs with minors. But let's talk about the affair he was having when Micah died. Her name is Susie Skinner. and according to J.P.'s ex-wife, Alison Williams, this affair was long-term. And after Susie's husband confronted J.P. and asked him to leave his wife alone, what happened two weeks later? Susie's husband was dead.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Susie's husband died in an alleged drowning accident shortly after confronting J.P. about the affair he was having with his wife. He was in a wheelchair and allegedly somehow just rolled into a pool and wasn't found until it was too late. And are you ready for this? It was John Paul who conducted Susie's late husband's funeral. And again, put a pin in this story, this affair. More on this in just a second. But first, if convicted on these federal charges,
Starting point is 00:20:54 John Paul faces up to five years in prison for cyberstocking, an additional two years for making false statements and fines that could reach $250,000. His arraignment is scheduled for January 12, 2026, in federal court, Florence, South Carolina, federal officials have described the alleged behavior as calculated and deeply traumatic, not only for Micah, but for her family and loved ones, many of who have been urging investigators to look closely at John Paul's actions long before this indictment was handed down. And with that context in mind, let's turn to the three-page indictment itself. Let's just read this. Quote, the defendant, John Paul Miller,
Starting point is 00:21:39 resided in the district of South Carolina, and was the lead pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The victim one, victim one, which is Micah Miller, was the wife of defendant John Paul Miller, and was his wife until her death on April 27, 2024. Count one, cyber-stalking. The grand jury charges that beginning on and around November 16th, 2020, and continuing through on or about April 27, 2024 in the District of South Carolina and elsewhere,
Starting point is 00:22:11 the defendant John Paul Miller, with the intent to kill, injure, harass, intimidate, or place under surveillance with the intent to kill, injure, harass, or intimidate victim one, use interactive computer services, electronic communication services, electronic communication systems of interstate commerce, and other facilities of interstate and foreign commerce to engage in a course of conduct that placed victim one in reasonable fear of death and serious bodily injury and caused, attempted to cause, and the course of conduct would be reasonably expected to cause to victim one's substantial, emotional distress. To wit, John Paul Miller sent or caused to be sent unwanted and harassing electronic communications to victim one, used or threatened to use nude videos and photographs of
Starting point is 00:23:00 victim one to harass victim one posted a nude photograph of victim one online without victim one's consent placed or caused to be placed tracking devices on vehicles used by victim one placed victim one placed under surveillance with the intent to harass and intimidate victim one damage victim one's vehicle interfered with victim one's finances and banking and interfered with victim one's daily activities. Count two, false statements. The grand jury further charges on or about October 17th, 2020, on the District of South Carolina and elsewhere, the defendant John Paul Miller did knowingly and willfully make a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement and representation in a matter within the jurisdiction of the executive branch of the government of
Starting point is 00:23:49 the United States to which he falsely claimed victim one have been calling him more than he had called victim one on March 11th, 2024, when in fact, the defendant, John Paul Miller, called victim one at least 50 times more than she called him. He falsely claimed police had never told him to stop contacting victim one when, in fact, the defendant John Paul Miller was told on March 11, 2024 by a police officer with the Horry County Police Department to stop contacting victim one. He falsely claimed he did not damage victim one's tires or cause to be damaged when, in fact, the defendant John Paul Miller used or caused to use a tire deflation device in victim one's tires. The new indictment has triggered an emotional response from the attorney representing Micah's family,
Starting point is 00:24:40 Regina Ward. Regina said the moment was overwhelming and she felt both relief and grief after months of waiting. I understand those two feelings together so much. Relief and grief after months of waiting. She said, quote, first, it was like, yes, and then I just wanted to cry. It became very emotional for me. And I was like, finally, finally, it's here, end quote. Regina also revealed that her involvement in the federal investigation went beyond just advocacy. In late June, she was subpoenaed by the United States District Court in order to turn over documents related to Micah's case. She said she complied fully providing materials to special agents that she believed were relevant to the investigation. And while Regina doesn't know whether those materials were directly used as sources for the indictment,
Starting point is 00:25:31 she said that they contributed to what is now known as Micah's List, which is a document outlining behaviors that she believes should be recognized under coercive control legislation. She said, quote, everything that's in Micah's list is supported by some form of evidence. And so every bit of that was turned over to the FBI under a subpoena and the allegations that are in their art. I know for a fact supported by some of that evidence that she provided to me, Regina said. As the indictment was announced, it coincided with renewed legislative efforts in South Carolina. Senator Stephen Goldfinch reintroduced a bill aimed at criminalizing coercive control. which is a form of abuse that Regina says is often overlooked because it doesn't leave physical injuries, right?
Starting point is 00:26:18 But regarding the legislation, Regina said, quote, coercive control is what I call the invisible abuse. It doesn't leave marks on the body, but it leaves a mark on the mind and the psyche of the person who's being abused, end quote. and personally, I think that is a brilliant description. She also described the cyber-stalking charge itself, explaining how that kind of conduct can instill fear and uncertainty in victims. She described allegations that John Paul tracked Micah electronically and appeared unexpectedly in places where she hadn't disclosed her location. Regina said, quote,
Starting point is 00:27:06 When you talk about cyber-stalking, usually that's some sort of electronic means, just keeping track of her movements in whatever format. I know that she had complained to me that he would just show up randomly at places where he shouldn't even know where she is and when she was having lunch with someone or whatever, end quote. She said behavior like that creates intimidation because victims are left unsure
Starting point is 00:27:27 of the perpetrator's ultimate intent. While Mike and Miller's family has chosen to remain private following the indictment, Regina shared her own emotional journey throughout the case saying, quote, I was angry prior to her personal. passing because there just didn't seem to be any resource law or resolution to help her. I became a bit more enraged, of course, as I got involved in the case and saw all the things that were going on with her. It's the old cliche. The wheels of justice turned slowly,
Starting point is 00:27:56 but those wheels turned methodically. The attorney general is a lawyer, and lawyers like to win their cases. They wouldn't want to bring a case that they didn't feel confident that they could win. Of course, I'd like for it to happen sooner, but my goodness, what a wonderful Christmas present, end quote. Senator Goldfinch first introduced the coercive control bill back in April, but this month he refiled a revised version that broadens the definition of household member to include individuals who are engaged or were previously involved in a dating relationship. The bill also explicitly adds harassment, stalking, and coercion. control as forms of abuse that could serve as grounds for divorce and be weighed in child custody decisions. However, despite multiple attempts, legislative process has been slow. Three other coercive control bills have been proposed in South Carolina, but none have advanced out of committee.
Starting point is 00:28:54 So as lawmakers revisit the issue, federal prosecutors have laid out allegations that echo many of the concerns raised by Micah's supporters. In announcing the indictment, one prosecutor described the conduct outlined in the charges. The prosecutor said, quote, The indictment describes some disturbing allegations of harassment. A marriage should be a place of peace and support, but it turned into a nightmare for Ms. Miller, end quote. We now know that roughly six months after Micah's death, the FBI conducted a raid on John Paul's home.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Solicitor Jimmy Richardson explained why federal charges didn't come sooner and what to expect next. He said, quote, the federal investigation takes a lot longer before they make a decision to make a charge or get an indictment. all the federal police do their stuff up front. So all of the work was done early. Now, I'll go fairly quickly.
Starting point is 00:29:43 They are expecting to be able to try this within 90 days. 90 days, end quote. Separate from the federal indictment, two civil lawsuits were filed earlier this year against John Paul Miller and his father, Reginald Wayne Miller, one in February, and another in March. Both lawsuits allege that John Paul and Reginald
Starting point is 00:30:03 engaged in sexual abuse and predatory contact frequently. targeting minors. The suit claims they exploited their positions of authority to manipulate vulnerable victims while concealing their actions from the public. And according to the complaints, the institutions they led were created not only for religious purpose, but as part of a calculated effort to groom victims while simultaneously cultivating community trust and financial support. The lawsuits further allege that Reginald Miller relocated from Florence to Myrtle Beach following accusations of sexual misconduct involving students at his Bible college in 1989. And after facing scrutiny in Florence, Reginald allegedly rebranded his ministry while
Starting point is 00:30:42 continuing to wield the same authority. The suits also claim John Paul admitted, admitted to having sexual contact with underage female members of Solid Rock ministries. And according to the filings, J.P.'s ex-wife Alison Williams, formerly Alison Miller, Allison Williams testified that John Paul confessed to her that he had been sexually inappropriate with underage female church members. The lawsuit state that John Paul blamed his conduct and childhood sexual abuse by his own father, Reginald. He was allegedly ordered to enroll in sexual addiction rehabilitation but never complied. Susan Miller, and that's not to be confused with Susie, Susan Miller is J.P.'s father Reginald's ex-wife. And Susan Miller alleges that Reginald physically and emotionally abused his family and engaged in inappropriate relationships with young men and women within the congregation.
Starting point is 00:31:37 The first lawsuit centers on Jane Doe No. 1, who lives in Indiana and is now over 18 but was a minor at the time of the alleged incidents. The defendants include John Paul Reginald, all nations cathedral church, and solid rock ministries. And according to the suit, in 23, Jane Doe No. 1 encountered John Paul with a friend when he, leaned in as if to hug her and shoved his hand down her pants, touching her genitals without consent. When confronted about abusing his pastoral authority, the lawsuit states that John Paul cited scripture saying, quote,
Starting point is 00:32:13 no man is without sin and temptation. God understands that, end quote. Can you believe that? The complaint alleges the incident triggered memories of a 1998 assault when Jane Doe No. Number one was 15 years old and visiting Myrtle Beach with her grandparents. At the time John Paul was 19, and the lawsuit alleges he forced her into his father's office
Starting point is 00:32:35 and then to his truck where he raped her. Jane Doe No. 1 was allegedly a virgin and remained silent about the assault for years. The suit further alleges that within hours of Michael Miller's death, John Paul delivered a sermon using, quote, manipulative rhetoric to maintain control over the congregation. The second lawsuit involves Jane Doe, number two, who is now over 18, but is or was, excuse me, a minor.
Starting point is 00:33:01 Now over 18 was a minor of the time of the alleged abuse. And in addition to the previously named defendants, the suit includes Cathedral Hall Academy. The lawsuit alleges Cathedral Hall Academy was not a legitimate school, surprise. Lacked certified teachers and that individuals were, quote, literally taken off the street and passed off as teachers, according to the suit. John Paul was 19 or 20 years old and working as a teacher. a teacher at this school in 1999. So Jane Doe, too, enrolled at the academy at age 14.
Starting point is 00:33:34 And after a chapel service, Jane Doe, too, was asked to hold the door as students exited and was left alone with John Paul, who was seated at a piano and asked if she wanted to play. The loss of the ledges, he touched her inappropriately. And when she reported the incident, because she did report the incident to a teacher, she was sent to Reginald Miller's office where John Paul was already present, sent to the abuser's office with him. And according to the complaint, Reginald demanded that she repeat her accusation and shouted, quote, you will not lie about my son, end quote. And then she was allegedly
Starting point is 00:34:10 punished by being forced to write, quote, I will not lie about John Paul Miller 5,000 times. The lawsuit describes additional incidents, including one during her ninth grade year when John Paul asked if she had a boyfriend and behaved inappropriately. Later, when Jane Doe 2 brought a Harry Potter book to school, staff allegedly burned the book, beat her with a Bible and poured water over her head. That year was her last year at Cathedral Hall Academy. Text messages included in the lawsuit allegedly showed John Paul admitting to relationships with 15-year-old. girls when he was 19. We can go further into these lawsuits later.
Starting point is 00:34:53 But following the newly released federal indictment, Robeson County Sheriff Wilkins issued a statement detailing his office's role in the investigation. And according to the statement, deputies responded to Lumber River State Park at approximately 254 p.m. on April 27, 2024.
Starting point is 00:35:10 After Micah Miller allegedly contacted 911 expressing concern, she might harm herself. deputies located her shortly after arriving. She was found deceased in the water with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and the firearm was found nearby.

On May 7, investigators met with Micah's family to explain their findings and informed them that federal involvement had been requested. On December 17, 2025, Wilkins was notified that a federal grand jury in Columbia, South Carolina, returned the two-count indictment against John Paul charging him with cyberstocking and making false statements to federal investigators.
