Lately, I've been trying to be more intentional about what I wear, intentional about everything,
just choosing pieces that feel effortless, still put together, timeless, but also not overthinking it
every morning. It's why I keep going back to quince. Their pieces just make getting dressed
easier and I feel so classy. I feel elevated. The fits are flattering. The fabric is really
high quality. Everything is wearable day to day. I actually got this really, really,
beautiful yellow V-neck midi dress from them, and I paired it with some Italian leather sandals.
It's one of those outfits that just works. It feels polished but still comfortable. It's exactly
what I've been looking for. What surprises me, though, is the quality for the price. Quince
uses premium materials like European linen, organic cotton, but they cut out the middleman.
So everything is priced way lower than you'd expect. Refresh.

You know that one couple on Facebook who shares an account?
Yeah, like James and Angie Craig,
or something equally joined and awkward.
and let's be honest, when we see that, we all have one of two reactions.
Like, oh, they must be so in love, or, okay, which one of them cheated.
Well, Jim, also known as James, and Angie Craig fit that mold.
Their joint posts painted the picture of a happy thriving marriage, vacation selfies,
anniversary tributes, all of that.
But that shared profile may have been the first quiet red flag.
a subtle sign that trust had already fractured behind the scenes because sometimes a joint
Facebook account isn't just about togetherness. Sometimes it's about control, secrets, infidelity.
And in this case, it's about a marriage unraveling so badly that it didn't end in divorce,
it ended in death. Today, we're digging into the chilling case of Angie Craig and how love
lies in betrayal turned fatal. The Craggs, Angie and James shared more.
than just a Facebook. They also shared six children, a business, and a seemingly beautiful life together.
Angie or Angela Don Prey was born to parents Don and Jane Prey on April 15, 1979 in Dodge City, Kansas.
She was the baby of 10 siblings and was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterty Saints.
Angie loved serving her LDS community primarily by working as a family history consultant.
members of the LDS Church traced the names of their ancestors who died before learning about the restored LDS gospel
so that these relatives can be baptized by proxy in the temple.
This work was very important to Angie and is a position her mother Jane held before her passing as well.
Angie also filled various other positions, including youth organization leader and choir director.
She was said to have an impeccable singing voice, a talent she inherited from her father, Don,
who sang and played lead guitar in a traveling,
country western band. Angie enjoyed being outside, working on various creative projects, and studying
interior design. She also loved animals, traveling, reading, and most importantly, spending time
with her family and friends. James Tolliver Craig, or James, was born on February 11th,
1978 to parents Gary and Mary Kay Craig. Growing up alongside his younger brothers, James loved
outdoor activities like fishing, snowboarding, and hunting, and was said to have a humor of a stand-up
comedian. It's not exactly clear where Angie and James met, but when they did, it was obvious they had a lot
in common. James's family, they were devout members of the LDS Church as well, and like Angie, he loved
animals. In fact, after the couple got married in December of 1999, they moved to Provo, Utah,
where James earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Brigham Young University. Angie and James
lived in a cute little apartment near campus and quickly began growing their family. They had a
had their first child, a son named Tolliver in 2002, and daughters, Miriam and Annabel in 2004 and 2005.
After graduating from BYU, James decided to switch gears by going into dentistry.
The family moved to Missouri where James received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 2006.
He and Angie had another daughter named Cleo in 2007, while James completed two years of research for the National Institutes of Health.
For the NIH, he contributed to several peer-reviewed journal articles on the topics of bone substitute
and composite filling materials. After that, he went on to work as a professor at his alma mater,
UKMC, and taught clinical dentistry, biochemistry, and histology courses. The family then settled
in Aurora, Colorado, where James opened his own dental practice called Summerbrook Dental Group in 2009.
My approach to dentistry begins with sincerely listening to the patient and wanting to find out more about where they're coming from and what they're looking for and what they want.
I also have a very strong philosophy that a happy team makes happy patients.
And we have such a wonderful team here at Summerbrook.
There's really no weak links.
And I love hearing patients talk to me about how the positive interactions with my staff have affected their comfort level at the office.
That's one of the hallmarks of Summerbrook Dental is that we try to be happy here.
A few years later, they welcomed two more daughters in 2012 and in 2014, completing their family
of eight. Even while juggling the activities of six kids and helping out in the church community,
Angie occasionally worked as an office manager for their family dental practice and always had
marketing ideas for how they could grow their business. Over the years, co-workers noticed how
silly Angie and James acted with each other, constantly laughing and pulling pranks.
They were even described as two peas in a pot.
Photos on Facebook reflect that.
James and Angie like to travel together too and could be seen visiting places all over
the United Kingdom, Africa, and taking the kids hiking, camping, and even caving.
However, one of their favorite things to do was visit theme parks like Disney and Universal
so much that James and Angie helped contribute to a blog and podcast called the
unofficial universal Orlando podcast. Angie made posts doting over James for being an attentive husband
and helping with projects in their paid-off million-dollar home. Those close to the crags have said
that Angie was one of the most vibrant and healthy people they knew. She and James both enjoyed
being active, but Angie went to the gym every single day and even had a personal trainer. From the
outside looking in, they had it all. However, as we know, things aren't always as they seem,
one knew that better than Angie's older sister, Tony. It's obvious through pictures that Angie and
Tony were extremely close siblings. And even though Tony lived in Utah, the sisters still made time
to get together for trips and talked on the phone nearly every day. Over the years, Angie confided
in Tony about James being unfaithful and struggling with a porn and gambling addiction throughout
their marriage. Here it hidden true crime, we had the chance to interview someone close to the
Craig family who said that James took multiple trips to Las Vegas where he'd blow money and could be
seen spending time with strippers. At one point, James actually had his own Facebook page,
but stopped posting on it in around roughly 2018. This may be when Angie first called James
out on his behavior, so they started utilizing one account to build backup that trust.
Regardless, their financial problems didn't seem to go away, and James borrowed money against their
home in 2019 with one loan for $675,000 and a second loan for $243,000. Even with these loans, he still owed
$315,000 in back taxes to the IRS and had nearly $1 million in credit card and other personal
deaths. Yikes. And with really no other option, James filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and was on the verge of
filing again in 2022. James told his good friend from dental school named Ryan Redfern that he and
Angie's marriage was still struggling and they had even discussed getting a divorce. And so to help his
friend out, Ryan offered to acquire the dental practice, becoming James's silent partner at Summerbrook
and keeping the business afloat. Even though Ryan and James had been friends throughout college,
this partnership brought the families closer together, especially Angie and Ryan's wife, Michelle.
After the bankruptcy and Ryan saving the business, it's not hard to imagine that life for the Craigs improved without so much financial burden and stress.
And in December of 2022, James was even appointed as his ward or congregation as their elders' quorum president.
To provide a little context in the LDS church, there are two main priesthood groups.
The erronic priesthood is for younger men focusing on service and basic ordinances.
The Malkhasodic priesthood is granted to worthy men ages 18 and above.
and gives higher authority to perform the more sacred ordinances, lead congregations, and offer spiritual guidance.
Malkasitic priesthood roles can include elders, high priests, and bishops.
The Milkezzitic priesthood holders enter into a sacred covenant to assist God in accomplishing his work.
They are organized into an elders' quorum, usually within their own ward.
Again, that is a local LDS congregation.
They have meetings to discuss their faith, share experiences, and receive spiritual guidance.
They also plan activities, service projects, and assist in community outreach.
So the Elders Quorum president oversees all of these activities.
It's a really big deal.
It collaborates with other church leaders and overall acts as a leader and mentor for the
quorum's members in their faith and service.
So given the weight of this role, the Elders Quorum president is typically someone
who has their own affairs and life in order, someone that is put together.
and the ward that James and Angela belonged to was relatively large.
So him being entrusted with this role had some follow elders in their ward a little confused.
Friends closest to James knew that he and Angie's marriage wasn't in the best place and they were still struggling financially.
So why appoint him to this high leadership position?
It could be that James wanted to take on this responsibility as a way to improve as a husband, elder and person in general,
or at least maybe just make it seem that way to others.
Probably the latter.
A few months later in early February of 2023,
Angie complained to some friends that she was beginning to suffer from severe headaches.
This was out of the norm for her because like I mentioned,
she was extremely healthy and never really had any medical issues.
The headaches seemed to subside over the next few weeks,
but come March, Angie's health would begin to decline again.
Now, this is where we need to start a timeline of events
and go through some text messages and documents.
These really helped to illustrate just how Angie was feeling
and everything else going on at the time.
Between March 1st and March 5th of 2023,
Angie went to Utah to see her sister, Tony.
During her trip, there are some text messages
that we can see between Angie and James
while she's visiting Tony that indicate they have been trying to work on their marriage.
While in Utah, Angie wrote, quote,
Your Healing and Happiness, this marriage is more,
important than my day. You are more important than my day." End quote. James replied,
Thank you. I know you're getting ready to go out and spend some time with Tony, and I would
like to ask that you keep last night's conversation details between you and I. I trust Tony,
but it was hard for me to even tell you that stuff. I'm definitely not ready for anybody else to
hear it, end quote. Angie replies, of course, I wasn't planning to talk about any of it. I haven't
actually talk to Tony about any of the last few months since that initial conversation.
James, then text. I'm sorry. I know she's kind of your outlet and your strength and support and
somebody who you could always go to to vent. I hate taking away even a part of that since I know
this is really, really hard for you. It's not clear what exactly James and Angie are referring to,
but some people close to the family believe that part of this could have been their worsening
financial situation. So in late 2020, James was hoping to alleviate some of their debt by buying
into cryptocurrency. However, the deal ended up going bad and James lost close to get this $1 million.
Not only that, but Angie found out he was gambling in Las Vegas again, losing another $2,000.
Regardless, it's clear they were trying to heal some wounds within their relationship.
All right, gems, many people had been asking me for my secret formula or the perfect way to make dream.
And although there's not any perfect way, I think I found the almost perfect way, if I'm going to be honest.
It starts with hot water, as you can see there.
And then you add a scoop of dream.
Okay, a scoop and just a little bit more, especially when I need that extra help falling asleep.
It does the job every time I sleep so well and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go in the mornings.
And then I use the frother, the dream gave me on my first order.
Everyone gets this on their first order.
I use it more than just on Dream.
It is now a staple in the kitchen.
I love this.
And then what I'm going to do is top my drink with some steamed oat milk.
This is a secret, in my opinion.
Just a perfect amount of creaminess, but nothing too extreme right before bed.
Use a QR code or the link in the description of this episode for more information on Dream.
We love this drink.
It has done so much for our family.
Thank you, Dream.
When Angie returned home on March 6th, James texted from work, James stated, quote,
Thank you so much for making my drink this morning. I just love you. I hope you have a great day
and I'm so glad you're back in town. End quote. That morning, James had actually fixed Angie a protein shake
as well. And it seems like doing these little acts of service for each other was part of their daily
routine, maybe as a thank you. Angie fixed James a coffee or water before he left for work as well.
She replied, quote, you're welcome, baby. I love you too. I think my body is not liking the caffeine this morning either. My stomach feels fine, but my head feels funny and dizzy, very strange, end quote. James replies, it's been a week since caffeine for you. Maybe your body is saying, no, thank you. I did a full scoop of caffeine and a full big scoop of the B vitamins. Is that how much you normally take? Angie replies, I'm
super shaky. Oh no. I do a small scoop of B vitamin mix. I feel really weird. James replies,
oops, sorry, baby. Angie then texts. That's okay. It'll wear off. I am dizzy and my eyes don't want to focus,
but I can get the stuff done that I need to this morning. James then texts. Maybe you should lie down.
Angie, I'm laying on my face on a mat in my room. James, you have a bed, you know. Angie, I'm
I'm stinky, just seems excessive for a little extra supplement.
James briefly changes the subject, but Angie writes again.
Angie states, I don't feel right in my head.
James, then texts.
Do I need to come home?
Angie, no, this is just weird.
I'm dizzy in my head and my eyes are working slowly and my body is responding slowly.
James, that sounds really wrong.
I'm going to come home.
I don't like this.
Angie, you can't.
You need to work.
I'll throw on some clothes and sit with the girls and see if it'll go away.
James, okay, I'm probably overreacting, but I don't like that.
I can cancel patients for the morning or move some to Dr. P if needed, so if you change your mind,
let me know.
Do we have a blood pressure cuff?
You should try that and see if your blood pressure is lower something.
Do you get lightheaded when you stand up?
Angie, it feels more like when I take heavy meds and everything adjusts and move slowly,
like, I'm moving in thick gel. My eyes are struggling to stay focused. James, did you take blood pressure?
Angie, I don't know where one is. James, okay, if you do end up wanting me to come home, I'll bring one.
I have a bottle of magnesium in my second drawer down on the left side of my sink. Take one of those.
Have you eaten anything? Angie, I had my protein shank at magnesium makes me feel weird. This is not hungry.
James, are you nauseous? Angie, no, I feel.
feel drugged. James, given our history, I know that must be triggering. Just for the record,
I didn't drug you. I am super worried, though. You really looked pale before I left, like in your lips
even. Update, end quote. So that last text, that was pretty interesting because that text,
James mentioned their history and said, quote, for the record, I didn't drug you. Well, it turns out
that about five years prior, during a rough point of their marriage, James was supposedly trying
to self-harm and gave Angie something to sedate her so that she'd be asleep and unable to call
for help. Granted, that was his excuse. But you can see why Angie might have thought something like
this was happening again. However, James was the one who brought that up without Angie outwardly
accusing him. He texted again. James texted. I was plugging your symptoms into Google and some matches
of what you're describing popped up. Do you have weakness in your whole body or just on one side?
And is it both eyes or just one that feels blurry? Angie replies, it feels like my whole body and it's
tingly and my eyes are struggling to focus. James, are you still laying down? Angie, I got in bed. James,
okay, good. Angie, my whole body feels so heavy. James, something's really wrong. I'm coming home with a
blood pressure cuff. If nothing else, I can at least help the girls stay on track while you rest.
And even though he said that, James didn't come home until after Angie texted again saying she
needed help. She wrote, quote, please come get the dogs. Sorry, I also want to shower, but I am worried.
James replies, okay, I'll come help. James stayed at work after that text for two more hours.
and then he texted again and says, quote,
I'm all done and headed home.
How are you feeling?
Angie replies the same.
Bell's making grilled cheese.
James replies, thanks Bell.
I'm all done here and headed home now.
Angie, I would like another blessing tonight if there's someone who can help.
James, okay, I'm sure we can find someone.
End quote.
After James got home, he took Angie to a nearby hospital called Parker Adventist,
but she was ultimately released that same night.
And the next day, Angie texted James and said,
quote, you don't have to miss work today.
We don't have anywhere to go today.
And the girls and I will be fine.
I'm starting to think I'm just sick.
And this is part of it.
I'm going to try my popcorn and Dr. Walker this morning
and we'll see what we can do.
Then James texts,
I'm not sure your popcorn will do much,
but you're welcome to try.
Angie, I may just have Bell take me to urgent care,
this morning. I should have had you do that yesterday. The ER is useless. Sorry. James. No,
you're fine. It did help us rule out a lot of other scarier things and I'm so glad we did it.
Angie, I'm kind of worried if maybe I had a sinus infection and I didn't really even notice because
I get so used to them and it turned into an inner ear infection. And that's why it felt like it
came on all of a sudden. James, let's hope. So how are you feeling compared to yesterday now that
you're up and moving around. Angie, same. James. Geez, Angie, I'm not sure what you were expecting.
I don't think this is a sleep thing. James, I don't know either. I was hoping that maybe the worst of it
is behind us and you were going to start feeling better over time, I guess. Angie, did the ER give you
any paperwork yesterday? James, only the discharge paperwork on the island. It didn't have any of the
blood work results or your MRI interpretation or the CT interpretation.
or even the glucose numbers. Since you are out and about, I really think you should go over there
and see if you can get a copy of it. Angie, they were supposed to give us info on the patient portal
so we could access it ourselves. James, I didn't get any of that. Sorry, the patient's portal
discussion must have been something that happened before I got back. Angie, that's okay. I'll
take care of it. I don't want to tell you, but I feel like you would be upset if I don't. I may have
passed out a little this morning while standing in the kitchen. I just remember,
I remember holding onto the island because I was dizzy and then redacted's name of a younger daughter in my face saying, mommy, mommy. James, thank you for telling me, but that would have been a good moment to call 911.
Angie, well, I just waited for Bell.
It's weird because my eyes seem to be focusing better today.
James.
Well, that's good, I guess.
Angie, I woke up with a headache and spots in my eyes.
Spots went away, headache still there.
James.
Sorry, baby, that sounds awful.
Your family is out of control, but hilarious, end quote.
So after this, Angie went to an urgent care center to see if they could run any more tests.
She texted James and said, quote, I'm aware of both of those things, blood sugar only 97 today.
And then James responded, wow, that's weird.
A1C, Angie, not doing urine test here.
They recommend I go back to the ER, but my AC1 was normally yesterday, right?
Isn't that what the ketones are? Never mind. She told me they don't have the capability to do that test,
but my PCP should. I'm tired. How'd your talk with Matt go? And this, by the way, was referring to
one of James's friends, must be a doctor. And James replied, it went fine. He said this sounds like
diabetes to him. He said, when your sugars are high, the lens in your eyes expand and make it hard
to focus. You can get mental confusion and become really tired and weak. And he said it would
explain the audio disturbances you've had too. He is really disappointed that the ER let you go without
at least giving you some insulin. He said that we need to find you a PCP and call them and say that you are
a new diabetic and need to be seen sooner than later. He was hoping somebody could get you in as early as
today or tomorrow. And then Angie replies to that text, my doctor can get me in Thursday or Friday,
but not before that. I don't want to be a new diabetic, so I would really rather not say those words.
Tell Matt to stick it. What should I do? James, let's plan on Thursday or Friday then.
Angie, I went ahead and scheduled it for three o'clock on Friday because that's when I would have a ride.
Do you think I should change it to Thursday? My head is killing me and I am so tired. Making these decisions is
really hard. James, I think you should do it on Thursday. I'm sorry your head hurts so bad. Angie,
I can't drive and nobody's here to take me. James, I can find you a ride. What time could you get the
appointment for? Angie, I'll call back and find a ride and someone to watch the kids. James,
I may be able to help with that depending on what time. Actually, Dr. P is out Thursday, so maybe just
stick to Friday. Angie, too late, I changed it. On top of all this, I'm pretty sure I have a sinus infection.
James, would you like me to call in a Z-pack for you? Angie, that would be great. Sorry, meant to say that.
on it. Angie, the PA at the urgent care called in a prescription for some kind of medication
that's supposed to help with dizziness. I guess we could pick it up, but I wonder if it helps
with dizziness caused by high blood pressure. I don't know how any of that works. End quote.
Well, later that afternoon, James must have come home from work to spend some time with Angie.
That night, he texted her, James, I love you. It was so nice hanging out with you and just watching a show
and snuggling. I'm sorry that you still aren't feeling well and that you feel like I'm
I'm disappointed about that. I am not disappointed at all. Just feeling empathy for how hard that
must be for you. Hopefully things can improve and get better. I am also so grateful that the last
couple of days have allowed me to have more flexibility in my schedule. God really does know what he's
doing. Are you feeling anything in particular for dinner tonight and this week? Angie replies,
I'm having a hard time feeling okay being sick and an even harder time knowing whether that's me or you.
I could tell you a word yesterday, but I guess I just think they sent us home and said nothing was wrong.
And you think I should be fine. I realize I could be reliving the past. It's just hard.
And frankly, all of this is really scary. And I don't feel like we've addressed that at all.
But I don't even remember most of yesterday. So maybe we did address it.
I'm a crazy person. I'm not feeling anything particular about food right now. Tony's sending dinner.
End quote. Well, that was quite the text. James replies.
Oh good. What's she's sending and when will it arrive? Angie, Panera, 630, James, I'm on my way. End quote.
So again, this was an interesting exchange because it appears that Angie was having some feelings about what happened in the past, possibly referring to James drugging her.
She mentioned being scared of them, not addressing how she was feeling, but James completely glossed over that and asked about dinner.
He didn't message her again until the next day and said,
quote, please let me know when you're up. I'm nervous about it, just being you and the littles.
Angie replies, I'm thinking about being up. Julia's coming for redacted later today.
James then replies, oh good, what about redacted? Angie, she wants to play online with her friends.
Drinking my drink and sitting on the couch with my ice pack and two anxious dogs, no blurt vision or
dizziness or anything, mostly just the headache. James, I guess that's an improvement over the last three days.
Angie, it's possible the headache will go away and I'll feel okay today. So yes, and my sinuses are cleared out and draining. I can breathe again, but it's making everything taste gross. James, I'm sorry, but that also sounds like good news. Angie, it's okay, it will go away. Just wanted to update you and I'm hoping you don't worry today. What did you feed Ember this morning? James, her frozen food. Angie, Kay thinks. She's being noisy and I think she wants her snack.
quote. So it may be nothing, but I find it interesting that Angie mentioned that their two dogs
seem anxious and Ember, their parrot, was being noisy. People with pets can attest that they
usually know when something is wrong and very wrong, which may explain the animal's behavior while
at home with Angie. Angie then went on to text and ask, quote, how are you today? James responded,
so, so busy. I'm planning on coming home and eating lunch with you though. Angie, and my
I eating lunch? I'll need to gear up for that. I'm glad I get to see you. James, I'm glad too. I'll need to
ask you what you're hungry for and bring it to you. I'm kind of feeling just a smoothie or something.
Angie, I'm not feeling anything. Don't bring anything. I'll eat something here. James, how's your
headache? Angie, better, but it still hurts. I probably just need a shower and some sleep and some food.
I hate your bird today. She will not be quiet. James, shower and sleep and food sounds good.
I'm sorry about my family.
James, I just wish I could get my watch to stop sending me notifications every time they text.
It's so annoying that I can turn off the notifications for that chat in my phone, but my watch doesn't listen.
It's tapping me and tapping me and tapping me all day long as I'm trying to work with patients.
End quote.
Clearly, during this time, Angie's family was becoming increasingly concerned with her health and texting about it in a family group message.
And so the next morning, Angie,
texted. Quote,
Hi, baby, I love your face.
James, how you doing? Angie,
good, just waiting for Julia. I'm trying to
share my vital stats with you so you
can see something even when I'm asleep.
But my head hurts and the blood pressure
is making it worse. Later that night, James
texted, I'm going to
trust that you are just sleeping
and not dead somewhere. I just
finished up with what I needed to do at work.
I just left the office. I am going
to stop at King Scoopers
on my way home.
and grab a couple of ingredients to make dinner tonight.
Love you.
Okay.
All done with groceries.
I am headed home to make you some dinner.
End quote.

May Perry. See site for more details. With no improvement, Angie returned to the hospital the next day
on Thursday, March 9th. She was admitted for more testing and James split his time between work,
home, and the hospital. While at the hospital, Angie texted, quote, I'm cold, super tired,
weak, shaky and dizzy. James, super thirsty, Angie, I've been drinking stuff all morning,
so who knows, James, Lord Vision, Angie, no. James, I'm having a hard time concentrating this morning.
Angie, I'm sorry. I'm just sleepy. James, that's okay. You don't have to say sorry, end quote. Later, James texted. Did you eat anything this morning? Baby,
Ang, are you there? Angie replies, hi, baby, sleeping. I ate my protein fables and some crackers. I'm down to
140, but feeling pretty crappy. James, I'm sorry you're feeling so crappy. I hope they figure this out.
How are you doing? Man, baby, you've got to stop scaring me like this. I love you so much and I'm not used to all this
excitement. And then later, Angie texted, quote, I'm in room 212. Redacted, just texted about dinner
tomorrow and my head is killing me. Can you please respond to them? The nurse thought I needed more
than Tylenol from my head, so the doctor gave me tramadol. James, okay, that's good. Angie,
my question for you, if we're measuring my vitals to see what's affecting them and what's not,
wouldn't give me oxygen when my stats go down, mess that up? James, it absolutely would.
I'm telling you, I have lost almost all of my faith in the hospital.
I feel a lot less anxiety knowing that you are hooked up to monitors.
And if I can't get a hold of you, it's not because you are dead.
Angie replies, the doctor down in the ER had no idea what she was talking about.
They are going to be in here every four hours to monitor my blood pressure and my blood sugar.
The blood sugar part I should have expected.
The only thing this machine that I'm hooked up to is monitoring is my heart rate and my oxygen saturation.
James, I'm glad they're watching it. Angie, I'm glad you're glad. I'm exhausted and sitting here feeling
like crying because I know I'm not going to get any sleep. James, I'm so sorry, I hate that, end quote.
Later on, Angie sent James a photo of her vitals and he responded, quote, wow, standing is really a
cardiovascular workout for you. I think you're in zone three there. Angie, my head hurts so bad.
James, I'm so sorry. Have they given you anything for it? I'm going to.
to lay down for about an hour in case you're trying to reach me. Angie. I just took Tramadol,
end quote. And then later on, James messages, quote, I'm fine. It's really busy and crazy,
but that's always been the case when you're not around. I want to be up there with you 24-7.
I love you and miss you and I'm so worried. I wish you were healthy enough to come home tonight and
snuggle me. But thank you for staying so that I can feel like you're being cared for by professionals.
And then later that day, James texted again. James, I love you. I'm excited to have you. I'm excited to
have you home again. I'm kind of feeling a little bit like I'm drowning, but I'm doing my best.
Angie replies, I'm sure you're doing great. So my blood pressure was just 145 over 73. I can't win.
James responds, oh my gosh, I'm going to head over and hang out with you for about an hour or so if
you're okay with that. Or I should say I'm going to hang out with you until I feel like I'm falling
asleep and then we'll come back home and do exactly that. But I want to see you again today.
Angie replies, I love that idea, end quote. Well, after James left the hospital for the night,
Angie then texted him, quote, thank you for coming back. I miss you so much and it's so nice to have some
time. I love you. James replies, you're welcome. I wish I could have stayed longer. I love you and I'm
so glad you seem to be doing better. I hope you're able to get at least some water or crystal light down,
end quote. And over the next several days, Angie was kept for more testing and observation. During this time,
James let his friend and colleague Ryan Redfern and his wife Michelle know that Angie was in the hospital.
Michelle actually had a PhD in nursing and reached out to James asking about Angie's symptoms
to see if she could help come up with the diagnosis.
On Friday, March 10th, Michelle texted James and said, quote,
How did Ange do overnight?
James replied, low blood pressure all night, vomiting in the morning still trying to figure this out.
Michelle, ugh, I'm so sorry.
tell her we love her and are praying end quote and then later that night michelle wrote again
quote just checking to see how ang is doing and if they have made any headway today how are you doing
do you need anything james replied thanks michel it's been pretty rough not having any answers i get pretty
nervous not having answers they did so many tests they have done four or five different blood draws
the regular blood panels all come back okay and she is negative for autoimmune disorders negative for
diabetes. Her A1C was 5.5. The main issue they seem to be concerned about right now is blood
pressure. They dumped five liters into her over 24 hours ago, and she looks super puffy and swollen,
but her blood pressure is barely 100 over 60. Yesterday morning, it was 5644. So although that is
the main concern that the doctors have, my main concern is just how she's really feeling, really pretty
crappy. They are going to keep her one more night and hopefully she can come home tomorrow sometime.
Michelle replies, how did her kidneys handle that kind of fluid? I'm sure she is miserable and
this has to be so frightening for everyone. James, her nitrogen was 29 yesterday, but today it's
back down in the normal range of 21. They think she was just dehydrated. Her kidneys seem to be
doing well so far. I thought it might be adrenal insufficiency, but they tested for that too and so far
just no answers. Michelle then replies, low blood pressure would cause her to
be lethargic and slur her speech. I'm glad she doesn't have those disease processes, but any
answer would help ease anxiety and have a plan. Not knowing is more terrifying in my opinion.
James then Tex. They did an MRI of her head because brain tumors are in the family.
They did an ultrasound of her heart. They did a head CT and they did a chest and abdomen CT and
everything has come back negative so far. So I guess that's good. No tumor is a good thing,
right? Michelle replies, yes, that is a good thing. I'm glad they ruled that out, especially with
a family history. It's just hard to imagine she was so dehydrated to cause so low of blood pressure.
I'm sure she is puffy with five liters of fluid on board, and I'm sure her kidneys were working
double time to process it. I'm glad her A1C was normal. I would have sworn she was having diabetic
chioacidosis, but I couldn't imagine that they wouldn't have checked blood sugar on the first ER visit.
I will continue to pray for answers.
I know you have amazing support, but please let us know how we can help.
James then replies.
They did check blood sugar on the very first ER visit.
She was 195 and she was throwing glucose in her urine.
That was Monday.
So they were almost sure that it was diabetes, but then we went back again yesterday.
They checked her blood sugar.
It was lower but still high like 145.
But there was no glucose in her urine at all.
And then her A1C came back to 5.5.
So that was a mystery.
And then Michelle Tex,
back.
So A1C is an average of the last 90 or so days.
If this is a new blood glucose problem,
it won't necessarily show in her A1C.
James.
Yeah, that's a good point.
But no glucose in her urine today,
so there's that.
Michelle.
But has she been eating much since Monday?
James.
Let's see.
A little bit, but not very much.
Today, the only thing that she had was one cracker
and she threw it up.
Yesterday, the only thing she had was a protein shake in the morning, which she threw up,
and some chicken noodle soup or dinner, which she also threw up.
So I see the point you're making.
There may not be any sugar to throw into the urine, end quote.
Throughout the day, James continued sharing more information with Michelle.
He let her know that even with Zofran, a medication for nausea,
Angie still wasn't able to keep anything down.
In one text, James said, quote,
If it wasn't my wife, this would be kind of a fun puzzle to try.
try to work out, end quote. And the next day, Michelle asked James if there was any news. And he replied,
quote, the doc is going to do some imaging of her gallbladder and some other internal organs to see
how they look. Still pretty much the same, though. When I talk to her, she seems like she's in a ton of
pain and super, super tired. Of course, all of the tests are coming back perfect. And then Michelle replies,
well, we know we just haven't found the cause yet. We will keep praying for answers and for
Angie and your family, end quote. And even though it's clear, Angie was still feeling terrible.
The same day, James messaged her and said, quote, I just woke up dreaming about making love to you.
I love you and I want you. And later on, he also let Angie know that her brother Mark and his wife
Renee were coming to town to help with the kids. Angie asked for James to bring her some soup
and it seemed as though she was starting to be able to hold down food a little better. On Sunday,
March 12th, James and Angie spoke throughout the day. At one point, he messaged, quote,
It just occurred to me that I have not brought you any flowers while you're in the hospital.
I am so sorry, I don't know how that dropped my notice. I think it's because I keep expecting them to let you go at any moment.
If I had known you were going to be there this long, I probably would have done a better job with that, end quote.
And later, they discussed her feeling a little better and potentially getting to come home soon.
He visited her that night in the hospital and brought his laptop for them to watch a show.
On Monday, she even felt well enough to ask James to bring her some noodles from Panda Express
and said her headache was mostly gone.
Later in the evening, James wrote, quote,
I love you and I'm excited to bring you home tomorrow.
Angie replied, I wish I was going home now.
And then James, I so wish that.
I'll come back to see you tonight, though, end quote.
after he got home from their visit, James texted, quote,
Baby, I love you so much.
I wish I had the kind of schedule that I could just stay up here 24-7 and be with you.
I know it's lonely and boring and maybe sometimes scary and I just want to be there to support you through it all.
I'm going to look at my schedule tomorrow and hopefully rearrange some patience so that I can be up there as much as possible.
Good night, my love.
And just as that song says, I hope you know that you're enough for me.
indeed more than enough. Angie replies,
Thank you for spending as much time here as you do.
It hasn't been fun and I want to go home, but it really hasn't been that bad either.
I love you and I'll see you tomorrow.
On Tuesday, March 14th, Michelle texted James asking for more updates and he replied,
quote, not really, no answers.
She's on oxygen full time now.
Michelle replies to James.
That must be so frustrating for everyone.
I'm so sorry.
Is she home or still admit it?
James still admitted, end quote.
Later that day, Angie texted James and said, quote,
thank you for taking care of me.
James replies, of course, don't forget you still have caffeinated crystal light if you wanted.
Or if you want some fresh with ice, I can make you some and bring it to you too, end quote.
Angie replied, no, this is good.
I have a sandwich coming so that will be perfect.
My mouth tastes like medicine.
Doc just signed off and is getting my paperwork together.
If she gets it done soon, I'll have Bell come get me.
If not, can you come at three?
Or should I call Renee?
James replied, I should be able to do it if it's around three or later.
Angie replies, it's okay if you can't.
There are plenty of people who can come get me.
I just like you best.
James, thanks.
I like you too, end quote.
Over the course of her hospital stay,
the doctors were able to find a reason for all of Angie's symptoms and released
her later that day on March 14th, equipped with an oxygen tank. However, by the next morning,
on March 15th, she was feeling sick again. She texted James and said, quote, really dizzy this
morning, I'm having trouble staying upright, end quote. A few hours later, her brother Mark brought her to
a different hospital where Angie was admitted yet again. Michelle texted James and said,
quote, whatever you need, we are here. James replied, thanks Michelle. She's at University
hospital, so maybe another set of eyes on this case will help?
Michelle replied, I think Ryan is trying to get a hold of you.
James.
Yeah, I just talked to him.
Michelle, I'm glad she is there, and I pray they find the answer because this is clearly
something.
Is she conscious?
James, no.
Michelle, how are you holding up?
I know that's a dumb question.
How are the kids?
James, she's not laughing at any of my jokes either, so you know it's really bad.
Michelle, that's distressing because you are funny. James, honestly, I haven't really told the kids how bad it is right now. I don't really have any information to tell them and I don't want to scare them needlessly. Redacted and redacted are at the zoo with friends. The older kids know that she went back to the hospital, but they are doing school and stuff. Michelle replies, that's smart. I'm scared James. Is that bad to say? James, no, I am too. It's weird not being able to wake up to her.
Michelle, I'm sure it's frightening.
James then texted these two photos of doctors surrounding Angie.
A while later, he messaged, quote, crash, intubated, 5544, Pulse 115, 84.
Doc says she should be mentally responsive by now and she's not.
Doc says she's very, very worried.
Use the word tenuous.
Michelle replies, any progress, that's a lot of,
people and that's never good. You probably have more people than you can deal with, but I will come
and just sit. James replies to Michelle. My brother-in-law is here, but if you want to come, you can.
Michelle, I will. University Hospital on Colfax, like by children's, James, yes, ED, room five.
Michelle, Ryan and I are coming, end quote. Now, I shared all of these text messages with you because
I think it helps illustrate how attentive and loving James was.
acting towards Angie and even trying to figure out what was going on with Michelle. However,
on the way to the hospital, Ryan Redfern received an alarming phone call that would paint a
completely different picture than the one James had been portraying. The call was from a woman named
Jacqueline Calderon, who worked as an office manager at Ryan and James's Summerbrook Dental
Office. Jacqueline stated that she was contacted by another office manager named Caitlin Romero
who gave her some potentially very disturbing information.
According to Caitlin, she was working late at the office on March 6th,
the day Angela first reported sick at the hospital.
Caitlin said James returned to the office after hours,
and she observed James using an exam room computer with the lights off.
This was odd because James had his own office with a computer and personal laptop
that he regularly took to and from work.
Caitlin said that approximately 30 minutes after James left the office,
he texted her that he would be receiving a personal package and asked her not to open it.
When the package arrived on Monday, March 13th, Caitlin realized that another employee,
Caddy Van Horn, had accidentally opened the box.
Caddy didn't know that James was expecting something personal and that they weren't supposed
to open it.
Before sealing it back up, Caitlin looked inside and saw a biohazard sticker on a circular
canister with the label reading, Potassium Cyanide.
And after sealing the package back up, she gave it to James.
Out of curiosity, Caitlin later Googled what potassium cyanide was used for and realized that Angie had
similar symptoms to someone experiencing potassium cyanide poisoning. In her search, she learned
that potassium cyanide is a highly toxic chemical compound, often found in a white, crystalline form
that can be dissolved into liquid. It is primarily used in industrial processes like gold mining,
electroplating, and chemical synthesis due to its ability to react with various metals.
As a poison, potassium cyanide inhibits the body's ability to utilize oxygen, leading to cellular
asphyxiation. Symptoms of poisoning can occur extremely quickly presenting as headache, dizziness,
shortness, of breath, confusion, nausea, and in severe cases, convulsions, loss of consciousness,
and cardiac arrest. With this information, Caitlin decided to call Jacqueline when she heard
that Angie was back in the hospital on March 15th and told her about the contents of the package.
Ryan and Michelle arrived at the hospital and briefly spoke to James before he had to step away
to take a phone call. And while James was on the phone, Ryan pulled a nurse to the side and told
her that he had reason to believe that Angie may have been poisoned with potassium cyanide.
And later, Ryan observed James crying while speaking to doctors about Angie's prognosis.
And so he and Michelle decided to leave and give them some space.
Well, the doctors told James that they were struggling to intubate Angie following a serious seizure.
She was suffering from the lack of oxygen, had no pupil reaction, and increased intracranial pressure,
which caused decreased profusion pressure.
She had no brain activity and was placed on life support in the intensive care unit, and they
informed James that Angie may not make it through the night.
They must have also mentioned what Ryan told them, because not long after, he received a call from James,
and James told Ryan that he heard some disturbing information and then asked if he had said anything
to the hospital staff. Well, Ryan admitted that he was aware of a package James ordered and told
the nurse about it. Not knowing that the package had accidentally been open, James lied to Ryan
and said that it was a ring that he was planning on giving Angie as a surprise. However, Ryan countered
by telling James that he knew it wasn't a ring. James claimed that the package was never opened,
so Ryan couldn't know what was in it, even though we know that Caitlin actually resealed the box.

Ryan reiterated that the package was definitely open.
and it did not contain a ring.
He then asked James why he would purchase potassium cyanide.
And realizing that he had been caught in a lie,
James claimed that it was Angie who asked him to order it
because she didn't have the proper credentials to order it herself.
James then said, quote,
I didn't think she would actually take it, end quote.
James described the situation as being similar to a game of chicken,
I guess like faking being finally,
Ryan told James to just stop talking and get himself a lawyer.
Knowing she was unlikely to survive, Angie's doctors called the police to report they had
believed she had been poisoned. At around midnight, a detective with the Aurora Police Department
major crimes unit named Jeff Chamberlain arrived at the hospital to begin speaking to staff.
After learning what Ryan told the nurse, Chamberlain quickly contacted Caitlin from the
dentist's office and requested an interview. Caitlin provided more insight about the situation,
said that on March 6th, the day Angie first got sick, when James got to work, he mentioned that he had
prepared Angie a pre-workout shake. He also said that he added some extra protein because she was
feeling sluggish. However, after drinking the shake, Angie started feeling faint and dizzy,
prompting James to take her to the hospital. Well, after this, Caitlin started noticing some more
bizarre things like James using the exam room computer in the dark and messaging her about that
personal package. She also found it strange that while Angie was in the hospital,
James would text her saying that he didn't think his wife was going to make it,
but then changed the subject and asked how business was going at the office.
Caitlin mentioned that she was aware of James and Angie having marital problems
because he had brought up the idea of divorce.
She said James had recently seemed distant at work and would sometimes leave during lunch
because he and Angie were arguing.
After Angie was originally discharged on March 14th,
James told Caitlin that Angie accused him of poisoning her with, quote,
poisons they don't test for.
end quote. When Caitlin found out that Angie was back in the hospital, she decided to reach out to the other office manager, Jacqueline, and had even found the invoice for the potassium cyanide. On March 16, 2023, another detective named Andrew Marino was contacted by Child Protective Services caseworker named Sidney Romero. Sydney met with James and his children individually at the hospital and reported some concerning statements James made during their conversation. Specifically, James alleged,
that Angie had been considering self-harm for some time,
especially after he first brought up getting a divorce in December of 2022.
He said that he believed that Angie had been intentionally overdosing herself with opioids
and other unknown substances.
However, he never reported any of these incidents or tried to get her medical or mental help
after these alleged overdose attempts.
He also said he was sure that Angie's toxicology would come back positive for substances,
but wasn't sure what kind.
Sydney told Detective Marino that she felt compelled to report these statements because
none of their children mentioned Angie having any depression or attempting to self-harm.
In her opinion, it was unlikely that all of this could have been going on without anyone
else in the house besides James being aware.
On March 16, 23, Detective Marino communicated with a friend of the Craig family named Jennifer
Reeves.
Jennifer told Detective Marino that James and the children were currently spending the night at her
house while they waited for his two oldest children to come in from out of town.
Later that day, Detective Marino submitted search warrant applications for three separate
addresses, the Craig home, the Summerbrook Dental Office, and Jennifer's home where the family
was spending the night. Only a few hours later, a magistrate signed and issued the search
warrants. With these warrants, two detectives with the Aurora Police Department named Heath
Grah and Bobby Olson arrived at Jennifer's home to speak to James. However, James told them that
he didn't wish to speak to them about Angie's medical status. He was provided a copy of the search
warrant requesting he and Angie's cell phones, his wallet, and laptop. James complied and provided
the phones and passcodes, but stated that his laptop was back of the dentist office. Not long
after, Bobby Olson and a few other detectives executed the search warrant and the Craig family
home. They noted that there were surveillance cameras, both inside and outside the house, which were
seized as evidence. However, they believed that the footage from these cameras would be stored
on a cloud-based system, and they could not locate a hard drive where that data might have been
stored at the time. They also collected multiple types of protein powder, protein drink shaker
bottles, a computer tablet, two unlabeled Ziplug bags containing a white, powdery substance,
and a water bottle in the master bedroom. During this time, James had actually attempted to bring
the kids back home. He had also requested members from his South Shore War,
to come over and clean up in the family's basement,
but was met with a shocking sight of detectives
and police already searching the house.
The source leader stated that this request seemed oddly specific,
especially since Angela had just passed away.
And now they can't help but wonder if James was wanting help
cleaning up a potential crime scene,
adding more hands and DNA to the basement.
This prompted him to send Ryan Redfern a lengthy text message.
It also shows that James,
actually had two cell phones, but only handed one over to police. James texted, quote,
Good morning, Ryan. Thank you for taking my patient load today. I want to make an urgent plea to you.
If we were ever friends, please do this favor for me. Please don't talk to anyone about what we
talked about, including any law enforcement officers. You are under no obligation to answer their
questions unless you are served a subpoena and you will do more damage than good to my family by
continuing to insert yourself into this. Angela is gone and I am devastated. There is nothing that can
bring her back and I want desperately to tell you all of the details so that you can better understand
what's gone on behind the scenes with her. There is so, so much that you don't know that I wish you did.
If you knew everything, this would make so much sense to you, but there's no use in telling you right now.
You and I have a history of you and the other partners and Jackie all talking about me behind my back and deciding what you think is best.
And then you're always the fall guy that has to pull the trigger or tell me what you've all decided about me.
In fact, yesterday you didn't even come to me.
I had to seek you out.
You have never given me the advantage of talking with me first.
You just decide and then act and hope.
I'll pick up the pieces later.
this is a pattern in our business dealings and now has become a factor in our personal dealings.
Let me paint a picture for you of what this has done.
Yesterday, I had to tell my kids their mom was not going to wake up and they were there to say
their final goodbyes. That was at 6.45 p.m. The hospital said we could bring the kids up to say
goodbye at that time, but because of the investigation you opened by your incomplete information,
the hospital made those poor, grieving, hysterical kids wait until after 10 p.m. to see their mom.
After an hour or so of saying goodbye to her, we went home just before midnight, only to have our house
sealed against our entry by the police. Instead of getting to go home and find comfort,
they were met with flashing lights and cold, unfeeling cops, and the kids, scared and confused
had to go to sleep at the home of a ward member. Family is starting to come into town today,
and I have to tell them they can't come to my house and try to explain why. I have to hire a homicide
attorney to make sure I don't end up being painted in the light that you know some hungry DA is anxious
to paint me in because I am most likely going to be charged even though that is absolutely not
what happened. Ryan, I understand why you did what you did. I do. I get it. But if you had come to me
personally, man to man, instead of talking to everyone else about what you thought you knew, I might have let you
in on some details that would have made you less likely to cause this horrible storm. Man, Ryan,
if you had only put me higher on your list of priorities instead of putting everyone else's
opinions and gossip ahead of me. For that, I am very, very mad at you. I have talked to you about
this multiple times, but you don't seem to care. And now what you thought was responsible, has become
reckless and so, so destructive. And so I'm asking, if there was ever any love in your heart for me,
please don't make this any worse by talking to any officers or anyone else about this unless you
are legally forced to. And whoever else on the team you think is going to be questioned,
I would ask that you privately ask them to honor this request to. Also, please do not respond to this
text message until I text you again. End quote. And so, I think that text message kind of speaks
for itself. James was upset with Ryan for being concerned for Angie and letting the nurse know
what was potentially wrong with her, which James clearly was not doing. And if he had actually ordered
the potassium cyanide at Angie's request, like he claimed, why wouldn't he have mentioned that to any of
the doctors, regardless if he thought she'd actually take it? I think it's pretty telling that James
was practically demanding that Ryan not speak to any police going forward while also berating him
in a message. You'd expect James to be a bit more gracious, maybe if he wanted to win his friend Ryan over,
but instead he laid on the guilt trip.
And a few hours later,
the detectives made their way
to James's Summer Brook dental office.
They went down the hall
to the specific exam room
where Caitlin mentioned
seeing James using the computer in the dark.
They collected the hard drive
and the USB plugged into the back of the computer
as well as James' laptop
that was located in his office.
They also recovered a small handheld vacuum
that appeared to have a powdery substance inside of it.
The next day on March 17th,
detectives began working to download the contents of James' phone, as well as his search history
on all of the devices that they collected. They opened Google Chrome, which had two accounts
attached using the emails, Dinosaur James at me.com and James and Waffles at gmail.com. The James
and Waffles account was made on February 27th, seemingly as a way to be able to Google things
without being saved on his main account. From there, they were able to look through James' search
history. Oh, and get this. This included researching chemical suppliers in Aurora and asking questions like,
quote, how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human and is arsenic detectable in autopsy, end quote. All on the same day.
This new account was created. James conducted more Google searches, including, quote, is arsenic desulfide
poisonous? How to purchase pure arsenic in Denver. Nine horrible poisons by botulinum toxin. How to make
poison from oleander, how to extract the poison from oleander, by oleander, end quote. And he watched
several videos on YouTube as well. These videos included, quote, top five undetectable poisons that show no sign
of foul play. And how to make poison oleander, how to make poison, the top 10 deadliest plants
that can kill you, poison recipes project, the top five most dangerous chemicals on earth,
and the deadliest toxins on earth, end quote.
In these videos, arsenic and cyanide are always top on the list of the most deadly poisons.
On Amazon, he searched, quote, pure arsenic, where to buy arsenic, how to purchase arsenic metal,
end quote, before finally making a $13 purchase.
The purchase, well, that was for the listing. Arsenic metal 99.99, crystalline metalloid,
10 grams for element collection.
Amazon item description stated, arsenic is often believed to be used.
used for murder as it has been in many crime novels and swallowing it could very well prove fatal,
end quote. It was determined that this purchase was delivered to Angie and James's home on March 4th,
and after this, detectives began looking at the email exchanges made from the new James and Waffle
account. The first we will discuss is in regards to an order James placed with a company called
Midland Scientific on March 9th. The item he ordered was potassium cyanide and in the order notes,
he wrote, quote,
hopefully this is in stock and I can come pick it up tomorrow, March 9th, end quote.
After placing the order, he received an email from the Midland Scientific employee named Cassie
Rodriguez stating that they needed further documentation to complete his transaction.
Cassie wrote, quote, our product screening team would like a usage statement for what you
will be using the item for.
Please provide that as soon as possible.
You can provide that in your response or with the attached form and return to me, end quote.
A few minutes later, Cassie reached out again to let James know that they actually didn't have that item in stock, but their supplier could ship overnight for delivery.
James responded, quote, thanks Cassie, I am a surgeon and I perform craniofacial reconstruction.
Rarely the prosthetics that we use contain metals that patients are intolerant to causing a severe localized contact immune response.
We are investigating whether electroplating with a thin later of alternate metals will eliminate this problem.
This chemical is part of that process.
And if this is successful, we hope to publish a paper in the archives of the National Institutes of Health.
Specifically, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
My ADA CERP, Continuing Education Recognition Program, identification number is PROV-684.
My license number is C-O-9285, and my MPI number is 194-2302.
My professional email address is Dr. Craig at summerbrookdental.com.
I hope we can still get this overnighted.
I'm teaching a course tomorrow and Saturday would love to demonstrate this process,
Dr. Craig, end quote.
Well, Cassie responds, quote,
Dr. Craig, thank you for that fascinating information.
Our supplier confirmed stock and informed me it should be able to go out today for delivery tomorrow.
I will keep following up with them throughout the rest of the day for travel.
And then James replied to Cassie, you've been the best. Thank you. Cassie, you're welcome.
I was just informed by our product screening department that they would prefer the usage statement
on the attached form. If you don't mind filling that out and returning to me at your earliest
convenience, I would really appreciate it, end quote. And in another email, Cassie wrote,
quote, I was following up with our supplier on this again and unfortunately was told that since
you are a new user in their system, it will take another day for them to get it set up and reviewed.
So it will not be able to ship out until tomorrow.
I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
And then James replied, oh, man, so inconvenient.
Well, ship it out anyway.
The course is Friday and Saturday, so I'll shuffle some things around and make sure I can utilize it on Saturday.
What method will it ship?
And will it ship for a Saturday delivery?
Cassie replies, yes, I'm so sorry, it's been set for next day air.
I will reach out and tell them to do Saturday delivery.
James replies, thank you so much. I will be sure I'm there to receive it, end quote.
Well, the next day, James emailed Cassie to ask if there was tracking information on the package,
and she replied, hi, Dr. Craig, so sorry for the delay I've had to get with management to contact our supplier and escalate this.
I do finally see the order on their website and tracking should be available in the couple of hours.
I will keep checking on this for you, end quote.
And then she emailed again, later writing, quote, for our supplier, we were able to set
up a shipment for overnight for delivery on Saturday, March 11th for this order.
At this time, the order is in the delivery process, but tracking has not yet been made available
as our offices are closed on Saturday.
The earliest we would be able to provide you with the tracking number would be on Monday,
March 13th.
I do apologize for the delay and for any inconvenience.
I truly hope this makes it to you in time for Saturday.
Please let me know if it does not, end quote.
James responded, thank you for following up on this.
so they know it has been shipped,
but they don't have the tracking info yet.
Is that about right?
Yeah.
And they won't have the tracking info until Monday,
but it is set to deliver tomorrow, right?
Cassie replies, yes, that is correct, end quote.
On Saturday, James wrote this angry email,
quote, wow, it's 7.30 at night,
and I've been waiting at my office all day for the shipment.
Looks like it didn't come.
I wish they would have just told me they weren't going to be able to get it to me
overnight.
They send me the tracking information when you get it.
Dr. Craig. Cassie replies, I'm so sorry it did not get to you in time. It looks like it did ship out
and was expected for Saturday delivery, but there must have been some transit delays, which is
unfortunately out of our hands. I sincerely apologize and I hope you still think of us in the future.
James replies, it's not your fault. I was just feeling frustrated and needed somebody to vent to.
Looks like it's out for delivery this morning, so hopefully we will see the package soon. Thanks for
your help, end quote. So these messages really just go to show how eager James was to get the
potassium cyanide as quickly as possible, while Angie was already currently sick and in the hospital.
Email records also show that on March 10th, James placed another order through a website called
AduQ bioscience for three milligrams oleandrine items totaling $330. However, this order took longer
to ship and detectives were able to contact FedEx to intercept the package before James could receive it.
Even though these messages, searches and orders were pretty indicative of James's headspace, the next
set of messages that detectives found were just as shocking. These were between James and a Texas
orthodontist named Karen Kane, who he met while attending a dental conference in February of
2023. According to Karen, she was in the midst of a divorce from her husband of almost 30 years,
and James led her to believe that he was going through the same situation. He even told her
that he had been living in an apartment while his divorce from Angie was being finalized.
James and Karen spent the three days of the conference getting to know each other.
and began texting and emailing going forward.
In an interview, Karen claims that their relationship wasn't very serious
as they had only known each other for around three weeks.
However, their emails suggested they did share a deep connection
and even said, I love you to one another.
You've been labeled the mistress in this story.
Yeah, I don't like that label.
If I had known what was true, I would not have been with this person.
In total, how long were you together with James Craig?
I want to say it lands right exactly at three weeks.
Do you think that James Craig allegedly poisoned his wife to clear the deck so he could be with you?
There's no way I'm motive.
There's been no planning a future together.
He told me they hadn't been living together.
He had an apartment.
After the conference, the two remain in constant contact.
It was just consistent from.
like 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. There is a lot of just feeling like so connected.
Pretty soon they're making plans for Karen to visit him in Colorado. She says an initial trip
falls through and is rescheduled. And the day before Karen arrives in Denver, Angela's health
takes a horrific turn. She suffers a seizure, is on life support and is not expected to survive.
Originally it was like, maybe I shouldn't really even come. And he was like, I could really use
the support. Karen tells me they met for dinner twice.
He at no point seemed stressed or anxious or
I mean really I had to drag it out. I'm like, are you sure you're okay?
Because he seemed okay. I didn't willingly have a relationship with somebody
who was in a marriage. Karen says they never consummated the relationship
and what she hoped was a promising new romance as ended with her pulled into a tragic investigation.
and, of course, the ultimate victim here, a vibrant woman, a daughter, a sister, and a mother of six.
I can't even imagine the loss of a family member and then to consider that it could be at the hands of someone that had been in the family for 25 years.
While all of the emails between them haven't been released, court documents state that at least some of their exchanges involved sexually explicit conversations,
even though Karen claims they were never physically intimate.
Regardless, they had been making plans to see each other as soon as possible.
In fact, Kieran arrived in Colorado on March 8th and left on March 10th,
meaning that James was bouncing between her and Angie,
who was in the hospital fighting for her life between March 9th and March 14th.
Karen had also set up flights to come again from March 16th to March 20th,
but it seems like Angie's conditions spoiled James's extramarital plans.
In an email from March 16th, Karen expressed
that she thought it would be best for her to skip the visit. She wrote, quote,
Hi, honey, I am so sorry for what has transpired this week in your world. I am sorry I am not
part of your world to be of more help to you and instead I am pulling you away. This is so hard.
I want to be and do whatever I can to support and encourage you and I don't want to add to what has
become an incredibly difficult time. I can't imagine what it is doing to you and to your kids
through this. I do want to give you any comfort I can, but I do not feel it is right for
me to mix in with all of those gatherings to mourn Angela either. And I do not want to meet your family
as a friend and try to conceal what I feel for you. I am praying for you and seeking God's
wisdom for this time. I love you, Karen, end quote. Tragically, on Saturday, March 18th,
2023, University hospital staff removed Angela Craig from life support and pronounced her dad at 4.29 p.m.
Following her death, James told Angie's family members that he would not allow the hospital to conduct an
autopsy. Her sister, Tony, pleaded with James and stated that an autopsy could help rule out any
genetic factors and prevent one of their children from getting sick in the future. However, James said
that he felt if the hospital couldn't figure out what was wrong with her when she was alive,
he wouldn't let them poke her more when she was dead. Despite what James wanted, given the circumstances,
an autopsy was performed on Angie, and it was determined that she had lethal doses of cyanide,
arsenic and tetrahydrozzoline, which is an ingredient in vicing eye drops in her system.
Ingesting tetra-dryhazylene can cause decreased body temperature, flowed heart rate,
decreased blood pressure, irregular breathing coma, and Angie was found to have had 400 times
the standard therapeutic dose.
Arsenic can cause severe vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, rapid dehydration, shock, altered
mental status, organ failure, and can result in death.
Similarly, cyanide causes chest pain, confusion, dizziness, eye pain, headache, nausea, rapid or slow
heart rate, rapid or slow breathing, shortness of breath, vomiting, weakness, high or low blood
pressure, loss of consciousness, lung injuries, seizures, coma, and death.
And as we know, Angie was displaying most, if not all, of these symptoms.
Not only that, while it was originally thought that she was only poisoned via the protein shakes
prepared by James at home, the autopsy showed that she may have actually been poisoned further while in the hospital.
If you remember, James brought her various things like soup, crystal light, and delivered her Panda Express.
So it's possible that he put additional poison in something that he gave her while in the hospital and while Angie was already suffering.
Given these findings, Angie's death was ultimately ruled a homicide and James was arrested and charged with first-degree murder,
after deliberation, meaning the act was premeditated.
And with a trial looming, you might assume that this is the end of the story.
But, however, it turns out that James has been trying to make moves while incarcerated,
with allegations of witness tampering, planting evidence, and even plotting more murders.
In April of 2024, James was charged with felony solicitation to commit tampering with physical
evidence after asking one of his older daughters to bond a fellow inmate out of jail.
The inmate would have letters that James wanted planted around their property.
These were allegedly supposed to look like they were written by Angie to convey that she
was unhappy and wanted to self-harm after learning about James' affair.
And in exchange, James offered the fellow inmate free dental care for his help.
He also asked his daughter to make a fake video of Angie,
asking James to get poisons for her. In addition, he asked another fellow inmate to find attractive
women who would agree to testify at his trial that he had had affairs with him. And after Angela Craig
found out, they refused to help her frame him. He even detailed how to access an online drive
containing photos that could be edited to make it look like the women knew each other. Due to the
nature of Angie's death and James trying to spin a specific narrative, a county judge set a
$10 million bond, cash only. As if that weren't enough, James had also been charged with solicitation
to commit murder and solicitation to commit perjury. The first on James's hit list was Detective
Bobby Olson, who we learned about during the investigation. And in a letter from inside the jail,
James wrote, quote, the worst, dirtiest detective in the world is on my case. Her name is Bobby
Olson. We have to discredit her, end quote. He allegedly tried to offer another fellow inmate,
named Nathaniel Harris, $20,000 to kill Olson,
along with an officer named Officer Hilstrand
and two other inmates who were housed in James' unit.
It's crazy.
And in another shocking turn of events,
just a few days before James was set to stand trial
for Angie's murder in November of 2024,
his attorney, Harvey Steinberg,
suddenly decided to withdraw from the case.
He cited that James was pursuing actions
he considered criminal or fraudulent and was insisting on action that Steinberg found repugnant.
That defense attorney Harvey Steinberg said in court he was ready for trial.
Six days later, he told the judge he'd received new records in the case and asked to withdraw as Craig's attorney.
That withdrawal occurred after a closed-door hearing involving Steinberg, Craig, and a judge not involved in the case.
Barely 24 hours after that, prosecutors accused Craig of plotting murder,
and false testimony. His new attorneys are alternate defense counsel lawyers, Rob Working, and Lisa Moses.
Investigators have referred to James Craig's alleged plot as a heinous, complex, and calculated
murder. But is it really all that complex? In reality, murders like this typically come down to
two factors, love and money, and either one of those could fit as a motive behind Angie's death.
Many people automatically assume that this was a situation similar to Scott Peterson or Chris Watts,
who murdered their wives to start a new life with their mistresses.
They point to Karen Kane as being the motive, but there are people close to the family who doubt this is the case.
One even said that it's more likely that Karen was just caught in the crossfires of James' grander scheme.
As we know, Karen and James had only known each other for a few weeks.
And what's possible to fall head over heels for someone in that time,
Karen may not have even been the only woman that he was seen.
There are messages that have been uncovered between James and another currently
unnamed mistress from back in January of 2023.
And one message, James wrote, quote,
I'm not happy but can't get divorced right now.
I'm not just stuck.
I hope you know I'm not putting you off.
I still want to support you in every way, including financially.
I have to do something about the situation.
I'm in first, though, end quote.
Assuming James is guilty, it seems as though he's
started plotting to poison Angie long before he even met Karen. That leaves us with the potential
money motive, which our inside source believes is the most likely one as well. If you recall,
James was on the verge of having to file for bankruptcy again. And Angie found out that he
remorgeted their home after that crypto deal went back. The deal was supposed to help
pull him out of debt, but it ended up costing him an additional $1 million. James was
drowning and Angie just so happened to have several life insurance policies allegedly
totaling nearly $5 million. Seeing as though he wasn't in love with Angie anymore, killing
her would have been an easy way to get his head back above water. Given all of the evidence,
I think most of us believe that this is a pretty open and shut case and any attempts to make
it look like Angie harmed herself as just preposterous. However, there's at least one person who
thinks that James may have a defense. Utah criminal defense attorney Sky Lazzaro. Sky has experience
with poisoning death trials, most famously Corey Richens, until she had to withdraw from the case due to
a conflict. She reviewed James's case file and stated in an interview that purchasing the chemicals
wasn't illegal in itself and the state has yet to present evidence that they were in any of the
drinks that James prepared for Angie. Sky also mentioned that in the text, James appeared to have been
an extremely loving and attentive husband.
However, with what we know now,
that lovey-dovey tone seems more like
a manipulation tactic to get Angie to trust him.
Even if James' team can conjure up a defense,
it's clear that Angie's family thinks he's guilty.
While they haven't spoken out publicly,
three of her brothers have made posts on Facebook
that I think reflect how they feel about their sister's death.
The first is from her brother, Mark,
who shared a photo after their cousin went
and laid flowers on Anne.
In the post, he wrote, quote,
My cousin Dana lives about an hour away from Aurora, Colorado, where my sister Angie
prey was buried after being murdered by her husband just this past March.
It's such a lonely, desolate looking cemetery where she was laid to rest and we don't have
any family there anymore.
How thoughtful of you, Dana, to take this time to do this for Angie, end quote.
The second is from her brother Mike, who shared a GoFundMe created for Angie's children.
In the post, he wrote, quote, some of you may have seen recent news newsre
reports about a dentist in Aurora, Colorado accused of poisoning his wife and the mother of his six
children ages 8 through 21. Some of you might also be aware that this beautiful 43-year-old woman
is my baby sister, Angie. In addition to taking their mother from them, it seems that the kid's
father was deeply in debt and there isn't much in the way of resources from the family estate for
current or future needs. Of course, we are helping as a family, but many have asked how they can
also help the kids financially, end quote. And the last was from her brother Scott who shared a link
to an article about James's new charges. The post reads, quote, so Fox News wrote another article about
my sister's killer. He is up on new charges, and quote. We also have no idea how James's family
feels about this other than his brother. He was taking custody of James and Angie's three youngest
children. At James's bond hearing, this brother agreed with the state that James should be held on a
$10 million bond and not a lesser amount like the defense was requesting. And speaking of the children,
in addition to Angie's siblings and friends, it's her kids who are undoubtedly suffering the most
through all of this. In the months after her death, Angie's oldest daughter, Miriam, posted,
quote, as of tomorrow, my mom will be two months gone. I haven't the words to express the heartache
my siblings and I feel every day that goes by that she is not here. I miss her so very dearly,
and I've dreaded this Mother's Day for the last few days leading up to it.
I wish more than anything that I could get her favorite flowers and give them to her with a note telling her how much I love her and how grateful I am for her.
She was by no means the perfect mom, but she was the best I could have asked for.
I love you so much, Mama. I'm excited to hug you again someday. We miss you, end quote.
I cannot even begin to imagine how hard it's been for them to mourn the loss of their mother while also trying to reconcile that their father,
could be responsible for her death.
James has pleaded not guilty to all of his charges,
and the trial is just about to start,
but not without a shocking twist of the case,
because one of the attorneys was arrested for arson
and has since withdrawn from the case.
I know. Wild, right?
Happened just now.
His court-appointed attorneys, Robert Working, and Lisa Moses,
are a husband and wife duo.
Well, listen to this, just before midnight.
On June 28th, a house fire broke out.
When police and fire arrived on scene,
Robert was sitting on the porch as his house was in flames,
and during his arraignment on July 8th,
where he was formally charged with two counts of felony arson,
working appeared virtually from a hospital bath.
A statement from his attorney reads,
quote, being a defense lawyer necessarily means
burying the burden of living at all times
in other people's trauma.
Sometimes this means becoming a new story
when the weight of trauma is too much for us to continue to carry.
Mr. Working is getting the mental health treatment so many of us delay receiving, end quote.
Still, despite losing an attorney on the eve of the trial,
the trial continues with Lisa Moses and a new attorney who has joined the case.
In Working's place, do you think, though, that there is enough evidence for a conviction
or could there be more to the story?
The trial is expected to last three weeks and hidden true crime will be bringing you trial coverage.
No matter the outcome, the loss of Angie Craig has left a massive hole in the hearts of everyone who loved her.
She was said to have had the most beautiful and kind spirit, and I just hope that we can see Angie get the justice she deserves.
