This is the high hopes podcast
On the Odyssey app in sports radio 94 WIP I feel a little less alone. Yeah.
It is another edition of the high hopes podcast presented by Miller Light, official sponsor of Philadelphia Phillies Tastes Like Miller Time,
Philadelphia celebrate responsibly.
Fritzie, we're doing it.
We're saying it. We're saying it.
They're back.
So bad.
Never a doubt. Never.
I know Bryce Harper, we're hoping he's back and maybe even.
Take a few days, Bryce.
Take a few days. Take a rest.
Don't come back too soon.
Talking long term seems like we dodged a bullet there.
Man, what?
What? How much fun is watching baseball like that?
They were down six one and eight four and they freaking win a game like yesterday.
Just like baseball.
They went out and pitched well and got some hits and won a game.
It's like, wow, what a thought I wanted to do.
I messed up my own plan early into the pod because I got excited.
I got excited with the idea of them being back and then not ruining the season.
And thank God.
I mean, thank God it was it's been a dark time.
Yeah.
And like dark times could have been a letdown series after the Braves, you know, and they've
let they've let down.
They've had games where they felt like it was going to be in the first inning of the
Blue Jays.
It's like six one. It's like, okay, you just took
three or four of the Braves, like, I should have expected this to lose 10 to
it's fine.
And whenever they go to Toronto, it's always just an exit with a split or
always splits men in Toronto. There are six and 13. And last night, I didn't
know that exact number. But as I was watching, I'm like, I feel like it's
never happened.
They never went there. And famously, I'm sure you remember this,
Pavetta did get shelled there on my wedding day.
Yes, I do.
It's a core memory.
It really is, it's a beautiful moment.
It's a core, I just snorted, it's a core memory.
It is, it is.
I mean, who could forget that you got shelled?
And I was like, of course he did.
Of course he did.
But I was gonna do the whole,
I felt like Berman this morning,
like back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back.
But dude, they're-
That's good.
Thank you.
Yeah.
I'm just so happy.
I'm so happy.
Whether, again, I said this, I think I'm fine,
I don't know if they're going to the World Series or not.
No one knows if they're gonna win the World Series
and the people, I cannot,
I think the thing that drives me the most nuts
about everything is like declarative statements
Like I know they're gonna lose the World Series because they're not their bats gonna
Oh, yeah, the bats will go cold. Maybe I mean you could be right totally
You know what? They've gone cold the last two years, but you know, it's bad thing go cold last year the Texas Rangers
They just stayed hot and they won the World Series it can happen
Well, and I also love the idea that I don't want them to hit one home run if they're gonna win
It's like we talking about yeah, you know just mobile. Yeah, it I also love the idea that I don't want them to hit one home run if they're going to win. It's like, what are you talking about?
Yo, small ball.
Yeah.
It looks like it's like, hold on.
There has to be a balance.
You have to hit home runs yesterday.
So they, they won three, nothing.
Are they one or two with three home runs?
And it's like, well, that's all I did.
It's like, you have to score.
Sometimes the numbers are like pretty aggressive in terms of like the team that hits the most
home runs in the Playhouse wins World Series most years.
Just like it's yes.
In recent years, like correlation between home runs and winning is just what it is,
guys. Like that's just baseball.
And listen, I think you have to do both.
Yeah, of course, you have to be able to do both.
You can't just be home run or bus.
Like we know that, but like to say to almost act like home runs or voodoo.
It's like, well, don't hit home runs.
You can't do that.
It's absolutely insane.
So that's the best case.
Like the best case scenario is with home runs guys.
Like that's the best case scenario.
People will bring the diamond backs, right?
Yeah.
They'll be like, Oh my God, diamond back, diamond back, diamond back.
Alex Thomas turned the series around the three at home run.
So like it's, it matters. Okay. Yeah, they're like, oh my god dying back dying back dying back Alex Thomas turn the series around three at home run so like
It's it matters. Okay, so I think I think most people realize that especially our listeners realize that but overall like it was a
You won three or four up in Toronto up in a home versus the Braves
They could they have led town in the past, you know, they had the the game against the Guardians where it's like they're back
They've had games where it's like, OK, no, they're back.
They get it. They finally had everything click
and they didn't let down.
And I think that's the most important thing.
And being able to come back and win like they did Tuesday night,
obviously, Schwab are going bonkers like nuclear.
I mean, unbelievable. What a game.
But and then the first about it might have been the tankiest shot of all.
Yeah, that went real quick.
That's one of my favorite.
We are the part of that is one of my favorite things in baseball is when the outfielder
doesn't move, doesn't Barry Bonds used to do all the time.
Just keep your hands on the knees.
Don't even look back. Don't move.
I just I love it.
It's one of those things I love to see.
Which courtesy jog do you appreciate more?
The courtesy jog on the home run ball, like a little like a little a little. Yeah, sure. You know, you know, it's gone. Or the courtesy jog on the home run ball like a little like a little a little?
Oh, yeah, sure, you know, you know, it's gone or the courtesy jog when the pedestrians crossing the oh, it's by far the best
you know, that's my least I
When a pedestrian just like slowly walks across the street and like stares at me when I'm gonna stop sign like looks at me
It's like yeah, even worse when they're walking through you. I'm sure you're sitting there. I'm
you. I'm sure you're sitting there. I'm probably above the wheel. You're probably like, are you gonna go? Are you gonna go?
I mean, obviously, when you do it during a red light, I like, I actually want to hit
him. But like in a sad science, like, all right, I'm sad. You're like, just pretend
you don't even have to move faster. Just like do a little like giddy up type thing or even
a wave. Honestly, just wave and it's fine.
What about when they're looking at their phone?
Oh, but.
You like that one?
No, you started.
Good.
But yes, it was a it was a it was a show up.
Let's let's take care of business.
I know they went and to their credit, like when it was six one, they easily could have
rolled over. And I thought Rob Thompson's actually we all thought they were going to.
I was sure of it.
I like honestly, I'm happy.
It was like I had a fantasy draft the same time
I gotta see myself going to bed by you know, it was great. I actually was wondering if you were awake. Yeah
I had a fancy jazz
You were not texting no guys probably I was doing the draft. Yeah. Yeah, I tweeted the end of the game
I was there. Where's Elliot?
Okay, oh it looks like he's having a good time. Too much.
It's actually sick. You're supposed to be covering a game.
And you're like at the Christ Redeemer's like these colorful
stag. I basically felt like it was like, all right, where's the
most ridiculous place I get and shoot a video now? Which I
appreciate. I do. But also, it's like, I'm tweeting, you know,
it's I know he's sending them to us to tweet them, but like it's really he's really playing with fire.
Do you want him to get arrested? No, no, I'm just saying he might. Well, and you're not even on Instagram.
So I'm on Instagram and I've been out of control. Well, it's just like so I also follow his wife, which is even funnier because she's filming all behind the scenes.
So that's what I figured. I also figured she's clearly the one filming the video.
Yeah. So I mean, he's just, I don't see much work going on. This is more my point. You can't tweet, you can't do anything. All I can do is put up videos and call the radio station. Like, what's he working 20 minutes? Maybe probably not. If you really really put it in like 10 minutes on the radio and like a couple two minutes, he's probably working like 1450 minutes a day.
Good gig. If you can get it. I wish I had a good gig if you can get it. I woke up at three o'clock
this morning. As you told people you wake up early. I just want to I am people might not know or
forget about it. You need to start a go on me for seltzer just to let me know how happy is like
pick them up the old the old goat. I am so happy. I'm very happy. I'm just tired. There's a difference between mad and tired. I'm just tired.
I got you.
Alright. Congratulations. Let's talk some films. Let's talk some films. Zoe's first day of kindergarten. Wow. Did you cry? Yeah.
No, but I thought about it. Yeah. Well, I mean, she's been going to school. Yeah, she went to preschool. So it's not like the first day she's ever been.
No, and honestly, she was at this school for preschool last year. So it really just feels like another. The same thing. Yeah, I should preschool. It was not the first day she's ever. No. And honestly, she was at this school for preschool last year. So it really just
feels like a.
The same. Yeah, it's yeah.
Yeah. But it's OK.
This is like, wow, it's still a bit.
Well, why on a Thursday, though?
Isn't it? Well, so Labor Day
and then right.
Like a Tuesday was like a day
for parents to go in and then Wednesday
they met their teachers, but they didn't
actually start today because it's kindergarten, man. All right. man all right they gotta start they gotta start getting molded early
hold that glad you're gonna be just wasting two days meeting the teachers
let's take this a little seriously here just say show up whenever yeah it's like the old
gabe gaffer show of spring training remember that quote of course that don't set your alarm
gaffer shot of spring training remember that quote of course that don't set your alarm show you wake up the games at 1 yeah 1230 it's fine 115 they will get in there you get your rest
make sure that was really a different time what a different time a different time but like to the
good on 6 1 the easy that was freaking flawless thank you they easily could have rolled over and
then like and on our day, whatever,
like we got to win tomorrow.
Chris Sanchez on the mound and like they just scratch and clawed.
And I actually think that, you know,
Rob Thompson has been criticized in the city as being like passive and he's
passive. He's passive. He's passive.
I thought he was pretty aggressive in the series.
Like he went to banks early rather than letting letting Tyler die out there.
Yeah. Like letting him just hang out there.
And he went to the, he went to banks early in Taiwan
like you could criticize him for leaving him out there and ending too long for the home run and I
Get it. But at the same time like they were I don't think they wanted to pitch all your bullpen guys because they had to use
A lot of the big guns and they're also still playing a game tonight to like they've gone straight through like there
I know like they had the off day of the Braves years, but they're going straight through now So I get it. I get it
So I sure she's not forget. They already had that Taiwan last start to sure so like yeah, it was that was the one where it's like
Okay, well, they left him out there too long, but at the same time he's pitching pretty well
So, I don't know but I think that him not just waving the white flag on the game
I thought was important psyche the team being like, okay
Well, I guess if he's right if he yeah, and and they did and they were before the shore home run, they were two for 13 in
the run of the scoring position. It felt like this is one of those games where they kind
of fight you can credit for that, but they give away because they can't get a big hit.
And then short bird goes yard. I also I feel like I've just never seen them work that good
of a bat in my we had like 3. We had like three, 12 pitchers.
It was like nine pitch, 12 pitch, 14 pitch, whatever it was.
And Cody Clemens, I think, had two of bats in that game, right?
He had 11 pitch a bat and then an eight pitch a bat.
Yeah.
And then the Schwabber one was like 12 or 13.
He just knew he was going to go yard.
Oh, it was the lock of all time.
He was waiting for the fast ball right down the middle.
And it was like I was sitting there watching it. watching it and they did for actually a majority of yesterday until like
Francis Bowden like founded a little boat in France. He's nasty too, but I know he didn't look at super early
But that dude's got stuff at a point six to era. He's got all good off since that but like I thought early
They did the they did the thing where they were fouling up on the pitches and like working to get a fastball to do damage on until he retired like eight
straight in the middle of the game.
I was like, well, that was a good,
the one where he struck out short over there.
Like you could see Schwerber just look at him and be like, dude, that pitch was
nasty.
Yeah, he's got good stuff.
Yeah, he's got good stuff.
But it was just like, oh my God, what a crazy concept.
You can foul off inches.
You can work it to get a fastball in the middle
That you can look to do damage on oh my goodness like what welcome to how baseball is played
20 years ago, I'm so proud of you, but it was good
It was good. I want to see more. I just want to see more of it
Yeah, I was I was for as happy as I was about sure we're having three home runs and as happy as I was that
They won I was just the Cody Clemens. We all saw your here. You're all in on Cody Clemens. Yeah, I like the calm. It's good calm
He's got more power than dove. Yeah, I I
He asked me on the playoff roster. I saw you tweet that like he had but I mean you say yeah
He wasn't on the team a week and a half ago like a week ago like I'm with you
I agree. I saw that tweet and my first thought was yes
Like I need this dude there.
It's someone who can follow pitches for me. Someone who can, you know, uh, work at a bat, like all this stuff.
They can play multiple positions. Like I'm with you, but you make it seem like it's like a no brainer.
Like he was, he's been in the mine for a long time.
Look me in the eye. No brain. Okay. Okay. Yeah. No, he's Cody Clemens is a core failure now.
I don't want to tell you. I really like him.
He's, he might be on the Mount Rush more right now.
Like he's, he's one of the most important players in the team.
Is he better than his dad?
Probably.
Yeah, probably.
Of course.
Of course.
More memories in Toronto than Roger ever had, I'm sure.
You're in like three Cy Youngs up there, two at least.
It's insane.
Yeah, he's disgusting.
But yeah, so, but just like that kind of thing is so important
and you're starting to see like the minute when when everyone's back and healthy and
We'll get there with Harper and we'll get there with boom who was supposed to be back on Tuesday
But they have been making is it a pretty decent bench here like so so off the bench
I just only I trust way more Weston off the bench like it seems like that. They are currently
They're currently trying to decide Weston or Hayes
because like Hayes isn't really played much and Weston is been heating up
a little bit. He's been cooling off, but like he's been, I think serviceable.
I'm shocked. The Austin Hayes thing has not been great.
The one bad guy we're going to give him runway.
Let's go get that fielders.
Oh, Austin Hayes. We did it. Yeah. Yeah.
I I don't know what honestly equally as insane
by the way is
Dave Nebraska saying on the record that Tyler Phillips affected their deadline plans when it comes to start
I appreciate living in the moment a little bit, but
Even if you thought that
Pitching well, yes, you look great. Yeah, but I think we all knew that like we know Tyler Phillips.
He had a ERA 4.7.
Yeah, exactly.
Exactly.
Yeah, I.
It's weird to I mean, did you like the camera has been harboring on this last few days,
and he's right, but he's like, I look to go on the stats like I heard a sub 300 slugging
percentages, something I say has 11 or 12 extra base hits in like 360 plate appearances here.
Like it's 12 walks and I'm like,
I get it. And I'm like, just man, it's a question like this is the
center field left thing, how it's going to play out in the place.
We know more is going to play against raise no matter what.
And maybe he's earned some, some spots against lefties with the lack of competition, but
like you're really talking about potentially having a incredibly light hitting outfield
for the playoffs.
I know Kaz is the size right field, baby.
Yeah.
Besides right field.
But I mean, yeah, it was good.
Marsh got on base eight times.
Yeah.
Great series, which is important to see obviously, but it's definitely gonna be the biggest question here. So they seem to just want Rojas to be the
center fielder again, like where it feels like we're back. We've looped our way back. Now,
last 11 games. I don't know if you check the stats. No, no hits. No,
I'm an eight game. So I'll be over his last 11, but regardless, I,
I just don't know how we got ourselves back here. I think you on Rojas
as a bench guy in the playoffs is actually an incredibly valuable what he did yesterday. Just come off the with you. That's what I'm saying.
Like I think he's the exact type of guy.
It's just you were just talking about like the way the bench could shake out eight
games, he's eight games, but he's over.
It's bad.
Like the way the bench could shake out, you're absolutely right.
In terms of like a mix of bats and defense and
Your variability guys can play different like Cody Clemens complete different spots. I said Wilson can stand at different spots. Yes
I'm on the left side the end row has coming off the bench as a leading events of placement a pinch runner type guy like that's
A valuable guy to have in the playoffs. Yon Ross is your everyday starting feeling well
I like that's a valuable guy to have in the playoffs.
You're on roses every day, starting feeling well. It's like, oh, I don't know.
So I had this thought while driving in.
And it might be both.
Were you were you going silent when you're there?
I know you like to sometimes drive in silence.
I was. Yeah, I know.
I was because I was trying to formulate it in my head.
I was like, legit, one of the weirdest things you do. I love it
Well, I just I
Have a lot of things we had to focus on it once right now focus on like four different things
So like when in the car, it's the only time I really get a focus on like the show and then stop
So I can't can't deal with
You know in the mornings, so no, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I was I actually only do it during break
Yeah, I only do it
But I do that thing. I've been driving in silence is picking up steam
There's a movement. There's a movement of driving in silence. So I was thinking about this in the silence of my car
I just think if you pull up next to someone their windows are down
There's nothing coming out and you just look it over
And be like, you know what I say, but you know what I would say
Were you also thinking about are we sure that Justin Crawford is that much worse than Neil?
Because I'm not sure I mean how could you be the guy can't hit it the major league levels
So like I mean Justin Crawford at least his pedigree Justin Crawford
All I'm saying are you talking about bringing him up for the playoffs?
I'm talking about bringing him up now
and giving him some runway.
He just got promoted to reading what, like a month ago?
I was he's been up for about a month.
OK, good important clarification there.
Thank you. OK, so you got
a month and a half ago.
Now be aggressive.
How old is he? What, like 20?
He's 21, 21, 21.
So he's a yeah.
But again, precocious.
Yeah, but dude, all right.
So here's the thing about it.
Look, I'm joking around with you.
I'm talking about like how that that would be a grass and move.
But I get your point.
But like, you know, I think Justin Crawford at the worst case scenario,
I think is going to put the bat on the baseball.
He's also faster, like significantly faster.
Uh, well, you're, uh, really fast, but I mean, Justin Crawford's about as fast as you're going
to find. Yeah. He's a special speed guy. And it's not like, so Justin Crawford is not,
he's not a, like his swing is funky. Like it's, and it's funny, they've definitely,
they've made some adjustments to it a little bit, because I think they want to add some lift
because he can't just drive the ball into the ground.
If he came up, it looks a lot like Don Brown. So I know that might, you know, trigger some bad memories,
but at least he has other things besides like power that Don Brown never got into. So like
Johan Rojas, I just don't think, you're basically batting a pitcher nut. If you want to give a shot on a kid
who does have talent, who can put the
bat on the baseball, who can bunt, who can do little things well, and you don't have a big drop
off defensively, Yohan Rojas also came up from AA. He was 24 though. He was 24 and he played a full
season. But like I'm just saying, last 20 games at Reading, I know it's Reading, but Reading actually...
AA matters more. Yeah, exactly. I take that way stats more serious
337 with an 855 OPS, you know like man
Pretty good like I just I'm not saying they will I just think it's something to consider because it seems like
Marsh's look better in centerfield, but in a perfect world, it's still
Johan Rojas in centerfield and March and left because I don't think
Hayes and I don't think Weston Wilson have played well enough to like
they got it. We got a shoehorn.
I agree they're not hitting that great and Weston Wilson had a moment and I
think he's still I trust me it's left hand pitching but I think what they're
trying to decide right now is who's going to be our guy against lefties in
the playoffs is it awesome Hayes is a Weston Wilson they're giving Weston
Wilson a lot of that run right now but I think cause it's awesome Hayes has the
pedigree he's done over the last the last couple weeks. But like if the
best option for the team is still March and left and blank in center field, like
I just think Justin Crawford could give you a better at that than Johann Rojas.
I don't think the chase is there with Justin Crawford. I think he's gonna put
the ball in the baseball. I don't know if they're gonna do this, but if you can do
it now, give him a little bit of run runway, see if you can take the job and run with it.
Like you can just go back to your on Rojas if you can.
Like you want to run us.
I don't think playing.
Sorry, you've been been moved around and all that.
I don't think playing more is all of a sudden going to get him more comfortable.
I don't know. It didn't work. We tried it.
They sent in the minors play every day.
He was hitting in the minors like it is what it is at this point.
I think for this season, if nothing else.
No. And here's my here's my final point. Sorry, I forgot this. No, no. My final point is I think he's
going to be starting that starting center fielder on opening day next year. I think Justin Crawford
is going to be the opening day center fielder. So like, if there's a chance to see if he can do it
now, I just don't think it's that well, I certainly in September, I think the question is would
coming up the playoffs failing miserably, if that what would happen like does that Sun is development all that type of stuff
Here's my question for you because I'm guessing the vast majority of our listeners have not seen Justin Crawford play defense
How close to yon Ross do you think he is because because I mean we he's not yon Ross. No, he's not
He's knowing so he's a purebred center fielder 100% like that's what he is
But you're on real loss. I think we get all agrees a different centerfielder I think the I think he's almost Pache you know
what I mean like Pache's also Pache was a great centerfielder
he could not hit yeah so I think he's closer to like the Pache level which
again really really good Rojas special and but I don't think it's it's not a
drop off like Justin Crawford. It's not a big enough gap where if he can come in and back to 50 for you, it's not worth doing.
And I think and I think you can do the little thing.
I think you can put the bat on the baseball, use his speed, like keep the defense on their
heels.
And I don't know, it'd be bold.
It would be bold.
But you know what?
Like what's the I just don't think there's that big of a difference.
And I trust Justin Crawford's bat more than I trust your hundred.
Yeah, I love it.
I think it's a really creative idea and go bold man
I mean you certainly didn't go bold at the trade deadline, you know make a bold move now
I don't we're not calling up Aiden yet. No, they're just isn't a need as much
But I really I legitimately think Crawford's gonna be the center fielder. Look again next year
He is he is so much more pedigree. He's so much more just naturally talented like
Why not man?
because what we're talking about here is is when you look at how this team shakes out for the playoffs and obviously like
You know alvarado figuring it out and you know, you look good in the third inning super low leverage on that
He actually did look good. I thought he looked good in the third inning there
And I liked, you know thompson going to him in a six point even 30. It was like, oh, or six to whatever was pretty good about five guys in the bullpen.
Well, that's the thing. I feel good about the bullpen.
I feel really we're back to feeling good about the same pitching, at least three
of the four and we Ranger we're hoping can get back to where he was.
Can we get to it?
Can we get to who's going to be making the start?
Yeah, hold on. We're going to come on.
We're going to get there. We're going to get we're going to get there.
What I'm saying, though, is I think that when I look at the playoffs and outside
of top or trusting guys or whatever these issues you invest, I think you could
argue that the center field left fielding is the most important decision they have
to make prior to the playoff.
Yeah.
Yeah, it is.
I mean, and I don't know.
You, you have to find a way to work everyone in so you know what you have.
Yeah.
And, and the biggest thing, honestly, is just March getting back to being a
really, really solid player.

All right, go ahead. Come on, man. We haven't gotten to Harper. I was going to do
Harper next, but that's fine. Do Seth Johnson, then we'll get to Harper. Listen,
we've talked about Justin Crawford over Johan Rojas, and we've talked about... This is a
very on-brand. We're going to talk about Seth Johnson before we get to Bryce Harper.
This is a professional. Literally the only Phill going to talk about Seth Johnson before we get to Bryce. Yeah.
If you, this is the only Phillies we talked in the morning, shared eggs, you know, was Bryce Hart.
It was like, we just kept him.
Is it okay?
But anyway, it's different.
That is different.
So Seth Johnson is coming up to start Sunday for Kylie McDaniel, which is very
exciting because frankly, I was going insane.
I know you were like, why you were, you were actually kind of apathetic about it.
Well, because it's like, all right, if you're worried about the workload
coming off Tommy John, I get it.
But if he can still start a triple A, I got to see what's the difference.
Like, let's start a game.
I got to see if you can start the big leagues and man, like, what a.
And you again, we'll go we'll get to Sad Johnson, but what a deadline.
It's unbelievable with the way Shaz says, look, too.
I know he's been like, Zalzad, you've been here. And I think he has a higher ceiling. Oh, I mean, way Shaz says look to me. He's been like, I think he has a
higher ceiling. Oh, I mean, it seems pretty clear that ceiling wise, we would say that with 13
strikeout game and like he's been all plays. Yeah, like he's got stuff stuff. Yeah. But yeah, I mean,
you got two guys who could become like Gregory Soto, like, I mean, Gregory Soto, now to be fair,
it looks like Sir Anthony better than Austin Hayes, I think as of now losing that deal. But the Soto. Now, to be fair, it looks like Sir Anthony better than Austin Hayes, I think,
as of now losing that deal. But the Soto one, honestly, like it theoretically has the chance
to go down as one of the all time heists in Philly's history. As long as they're good.
But yeah, I'm saying if those guys are good in the majors, like that's an all time.
Well, and you trade each right now. All the Gary did make his debut. So he'd been good out in,
out in LA, Claussen's completely falling apart,
but that was always gonna happen
because they can't develop pitchers.
Like, not to get too in the weeds here.
So although I know that we would never do that
on this podcast.
They can't develop pitchers.
The Phillies were developing George Claussen.
I think they would have gotten more out of George Claussen
with their development staff than the Angels.
But you know, it doesn't mean like he's bad.
It means that they suck.
I love how defensive you still are of him.
Cause again, I got rid of guilt.
Yeah, you did.
And we'll get to actually have,
I'm excited about it, so we'll get to him.
But, but, but Seth Johnson's coming up on Sunday,
which is great.
I don't know how far he's gonna go in the game.
It's probably gonna be like four or five innings.
Yeah, I mean, he hasn't gone much more than that
in the minors.
He went six in one maybe.
He did six.
But it's five mostly. and the big part for him
So far is that he wasn't walking people a triple-a and traditionally guys go up there and walk people because they're on the new
System with the umpires clock and umpires so it's like it's a tighter strike zone
They say so not walking people still striking guys out and stuff looks pretty good
Like I don't think it's I don't think it's top of the line stuff, but I think pure stuff wise
I think it's better than Mercado.
I think it's better than Tyler Phillips. And when the cable is right,
it's probably not Nick Able because then the cable is the best stuff.
But like, I think Seth Johnson can be a solid, like five, four or five guys.
So I'm excited. Yeah, look, we've got we've got we've spent all season trying to
find a solid five guys. Well, and they only need four more stars.
No, I know.
I'm just saying it'd be nice to find someone there.
I'm with you.
All right.
Do you have anything else you want to talk about before?
What niche things can we talk about?
I know you want to, you know, you just said, you know, there's some stuff you want to get
to and all that.
Well, I mean, all right, hold on just for the bit.
Just for the bit.
Nick Nelson is going back up.
You know, he's got a knuckle.
I was just had to go there
How about it? I love it. I dude I've said this before I just love knuckleballers. I love everything about it
I think it's such a neat thing it like I grew up a Tom Candy Addy
Like I grew up with you know, like it's a legit knuckleballer back in the day
It seems like you know, and I was excited when we faced Waldron like I'm excited the knuckleball to live. I feel like it is something that could die and I need not
the knuckleball to continue to live. So I want knuckleballers to not throw hard to like
my like, all right. Oh yeah, Matt. Oh, I don't like the Matt Waldron, like throw a 90. Yeah,
Dickie. Well, Dickie, that's why he's so great. Yeah. Yeah. I want, I want to know, I want
like between, you know, 65 and 80 the entire game exactly
So and and RIP but like Wakefield was my guy
So but that was perfect it was like 60 miles an hour just like meh, I don't think that's Nick Nelson
I think Nick Nelson still has 95 in his back pocket
I'll be curious to see what the they mix it in like just like I he's just pitching all of a sudden
It's like a knuckleball out of nowhere. I mean that honestly it could be I mean if you could throw it effectively
I mean that is an interesting way to go about pitching
It's usually we see knuckleballers be interesting to see someone like kind of just mix knuckleball as they go at some point
There is going to be a knuckleball revolution
Yeah, I think so too like why wouldn't like it is if you can throw it effectively
It is an incredibly hard pitch
It's a field pitch for 20 some years on a knuckleball. Yes, you think he's tired at the end of his start
No, I think he's just like I could go another night and you guys tomorrow. Yeah, it's everyday guys. Yeah
All right surprise. Oh, we're getting way there. I think we're there
Can we just what are we doing?
Something else the white socks when I write the white socks Can we just, what are we doing? Hold on one sec. Was there something else?
The white socks?
We're gonna write the white socks?
Can we just real quick on the white socks, just very quickly, like I promise it'll be
really quick.
Like you came in here one time and you're like, I got this whole new thing.
It's called the take ball.
I forgot about the take ball.
Yeah.
That's my point.
It's gone.
I would like to say I'm the greatest take ballter of all time because it's gone.
I came in one time said, here's my take.
I thought about this.
Here's my take ball take.
And it was in like the beginning of the seat where like a few weeks in
or maybe a month in, I'm like, this is going to be the worst team in history
base or our lifetimes. I crushed that.
Not to take too big a victory.
Never. I'm taking a victory.
So I'm putting the the the Justin Crawford over Johan Rahas taking the take ball Oh, I like it. We're back. Lock it in. Forgot about it.
I think brought the table. I forgot about it. Should we start naming random
pictures again? Play buckles. All right, Brett Sarfer. We got to talk about price.
What are we doing? What are we? Chris Ball said, Bobby Ohita went old school on you.
Didn't see that coming. Did you? Jason Vargas, former fellow, former fellow. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he wasn't. I wish he Um, so I do, I do legitimately think that Tucker's looking at us like that.
He's like, I actually, he's trying to, he's trying to like get the chapter of when we're
going to start it and we just keep pushing it back real quick.
Real quick on Ramon Rasa.
He talkers are furious right now.
You don't usually see Tucker.
If you're actually looks like angry, right?
I'm not furious that you guys.
Yeah. Good. Okay. Good. I'm not furious at you guys. Yes.
Okay.
Okay.
Good.
Good.
Last thing on Ramon Rasa.
I do think I legitimately influenced that decision to have him be like the seventh inning guy.
You were all in.
You could not have been more in on him.
He got shelved.
Yeah. From the moment he stepped on the mound.
Like it was a disaster.
Yeah.
I loved him.
I loved Ederbri Ramos.
And I loved the guy with love everybody. Ramos. Mm hmm. I love.
The guy with the slider that eventually went to the
that eventually got traded down to the race.
I forget his name.
Lavender. No, no, no, he's a righty.
He was a righty, a little righty.
It's OK. OK, we move on.
I feel like we should know.
No, I know. I forget his name.
All right. We should talk.
We should talk about the bits down. Once we can't remember the names we're trying to bit with, I know I forget his name. All right, we should talk about we just talk All right, the bits down once we can't remember the names were trying to bit with I think it's done. Yeah
What are we doing?
Don't get what we're doing with price like he's clearly going through something like so I even priority
Yeah, even the game on Tuesday. So the game on Tuesday, you ripped the ball like the seventh inning
Oh and that when he swung and they like put the bat down and that was the night the night
I'm sorry about the night. I'm talking about in the seventh
Yeah, he smoked the ball, but it was like he couldn't lift it like he had no power in the ninth
He literally swings that's like the back on the ground
You know like I just he's the most important asset that you have
he's he's the he's that one of the keys to winning a World Series Like I listen at some point you have to take it out of his hands and actually
percent and it actually reminds me a lot of the situation is reminding me of me
of Embiid where Embiid would be like I want to play for the MVP or whatever.
Yep. Like you know and and the the sixers I feel like never protect them and
they let him keep going out there before he gets hurt.
And it's like you have to protect them here because and be that I understand
doesn't want to be labeled as injury prone.
I don't think Harper wants to be labeled as injury prone.
But at some point, it just is what it is.
And I also think Bryce does like know the games matter.
They're still fighting for positioning and all.
And we know Bryce, he's like the most competitive guy out there.
Like seven games.
Like you have to take it out of his hands.
Like this is honestly it's borderline like
I can't find the right word.
Thank you, Tucker Tucker.
Tucker, welcome to the five.
It's really negligent.
Like you have to like you can't let him keep going out there.
And not just that, like it's for the playoffs.
Like what are we doing here?
I know the best version of this guy.
And like he's listen, he played through a torn Tommy Johnley,
but like he was hitting, you know, like he was actually affecting his power.
It's affecting again. I give him credit. He's he's hitting for average.
Again, he's adjusted.
He is he is adjusted and I'm going to spray the ball on all over the but you're getting a watered down price
like you're getting a watered down version of Bryce Harper and
Listen, I appreciate wanting to go out there appreciate wanting to fight
But I think everyone understands like dude, we also need you like we need you late in the season
So for more important games than your seven games up, you're two and a half up on the
Brewers. You have a four game series in Miami. Just sit up, just sit up, especially with the Brewers.
They have the Brewers after Miami Brewers next week. It's like, sit him now, see what happens,
get to that series that actually matters like 100%. So I, I think we all are in the same boat
here. I think I felt this before yesterday. Like,
before yesterday, I agree. Like it's sit the man down. It's almost like a sign. And then of course
he get exactly by the way, real quick, just in general, like, I don't think it was on purpose
or anything like that. But I mean, you got to drill someone. I mean, you can't write like, what
are we doing? What is it? Three guys get in the game? A couple of the game
before it's like, like, I understand. And I look at the Whitmurray field comments, we've talked about
that, you know, I really appreciated what he said, you know, obviously got hit in the head, but I
think he's dead on I think a lot of these guys are coming out and just throwing as fast they can
without any real thought about where the ball's going there. And and Major League Baseball is
promoting that is like saying, Hey, if you throw hard, that that's all we want, you know, what they'll figure out
when they get up there.
And to the point you always say when you can't police the game yourselves,
like these guys know they're not going to get hit, especially pictures
on the bat anymore.
I think he hit on all these things that have really made it that
it is a little dangerous out there and it can't be.
Yeah, and it's really hard to like, you can't just say if you hit a guy
in the head, you're out like, you know, it a bit because that makes pitchers more timid to throw in.
We're going to be a big leaguer.
So it's a tough it's one of the issues in the game right now.
And it 100 percent is and no one wants to like even when you're throwing at someone,
you know, you're not trying to hit it.
You want to hit him like the side or the back or whatever.
Yeah. Yeah. And I don't think it's intentional.
It's just like Bryce. I feel like every time he always gets hit in that spot. I know, dude. You know,
he opens up so fast. And I mean, thank God it wasn't the wrist again. I I'm sure you
did too. I'm sure every Phillies fan when that happened, immediately think about Blake
Snell. I was like, Oh God, I was actually happy as the other. Oh, no, I know. I know.
I'm just saying that the impact of it is like, well, that, you know, it was like right on
the elbow. Yeah. So so I think if man, it's tough because I love when Strom did it.
And when Strom picked up Cassiana,
Strom's got Strom is I don't know if there's anyone in the world
that believes in themselves quite like strong believes in himself, which I appreciate.
But at the same time, like I just want to get out there to win yesterday.
It was a three to ballgame.
It was eventually four to I just wanted to get the win.
I didn't feel it yesterday. I didn't think to get the win. I didn't feel it yesterday.
I didn't think it was on purpose.
I didn't think it was on purpose either.
It's just, you know.
Yeah. Pick up your guys.
But I don't know.
I just I really want to make sure they got the win.
I need extra base. I get it.
I get it. And I'm I'm not I'm not saying it like.
I think there's more of a baseball issue than that game against the Blue Jays issue.
But like they got to figure something out because it again, I just don't know what they
do.
I don't either.
I don't know what they do either.
They're not going to let guys police it anymore.
Like Ben Joyce at one hundred and five point five the other day.
I know, dude.
I know what you guys are going to continue to throw hard.
Yeah, no, I know.
It's a really good point.
And it seems like at least with Bryce, you know, everything you want to hear after the game was was as good as it could be.
I mean, Taber was like, he's fine. Like Bryce was like, I want to keep playing what you don't want to hear. I'm just talking from yesterday.
I know. I actually didn't think I actually didn't think Thompson sounded as confident.
No, I didn't. Like he's been I think he's been more defiant in other times with the injury.
Like I think he wants to sit down. Oh, he might. But I just think he was saying he's not is not a problem.
No, I get it. I just think just didn't like break his elbow or something.
No, I, I, I agree with that. I think it felt more like, I know we, I think we got to sit up.
Yeah. Which, which, yeah, you should end to browse. You should step in. I mean, this should be an
organizational decision. This is not something that to your point, you said before, like sometimes
these guys are gamers. They want to go out and play. They want to be with their teammates. They want to like help them win.
Like at a certain point you have to say, Hey man, we're in charge.
You play for us.
You're not playing these.
Like you have to.
Well, plus, I mean, Cody Clemens is starting to emerge here a little bit.
When you got Greg Dobbs to point out there, you got to play with ours.
Now hopefully bones back so that it makes it easier.
I think if bones back Cassie, I was back in right field.
Rice is maybe a little more willing to take a tour.
I by the way.
We don't need short burn left anymore.
No, no, especially like didn't he?
Didn't the hamstring injury last?
I thought so.
I wasn't sure about that.
He played left field three games.
I got hurt. That's what I thought.
That's what I thought.
No, like what are we doing here?
You want to talk about guys who can't lose no matter what like, hey,
three phone runs, I know, you know, and then obviously, still the thing yesterday, still, like, he doesn't actually play the ball off the wall pretty well.
He did he got to pretty quickly and like right angle and all that. But he is hilarious to watch Rob, it it, I know people have said it, but like, sometimes, sometimes you know when you don't want to say that I mean, but someone just nails the exact thing that it is
It's like those old videos of a bruise like with the little like legs motoring, but the bad but I think it's like Ted
the little teddy bear
That's good too, yeah exactly what it looks I can see that I will say there is nothing there's nothing like a shore bomb
Oh, dude, like the one obviously the three owners run in the third one like such a massive it the one he let off the game with yesterday where it's just like off the bat. It's like sales in the air like goes so high and so far like the one he hit in the eighth or whatever it was, was it the eight, seven days, whatever it was. Eight. Yeah. That was like, uh, it was, it was the ninth.
You're right. It was top of the ninth. It was like a tank shot, but it was like,
I know, but right now I do love the missiles. No, I love both. I'm not,
I'm not ripping either one. I'm just saying the one yesterday where it just like
sales, like it almost looks like a pop-up that goes forever and ever and ever.
Like I've just never seen it when it hit him like that.
I know. But man, when he hits like one that barely gets off the ground.
Well, the second one yesterday, the third one was longer, but the second one was
like a laser laser. Like that was just like one off the one off Rambo in game
six. They are the one off for a lander in game five.
Well, and I mean, the ultimate one is obviously the San Diego one. I mean, that
one, that's more of the ones you're talking about.
It was, but no, see the one about the San Diego one is I think it's the best
example of both of what we're talking about. It was, but no, see the one about the San Diego one is I think it's the best example of both of
what we're talking about. Like it was super important. I know stairs were pointing in the
night happened. I know Howard had some like monsters to write. I saw, I don't think I've
ever seen a ball that small. Yeah. Oh no. In the San Diego one. No, never, never. The number one,
it also looks fake. It does look fake. I mean, Bryce, the face thing, like it doesn't look,
even when the players in the dugout are like,
what the hell is that?
What a player.
What a player.
He's so fun.
I love it.
I love it.
It's really.

Shout out today's show is sponsored by Miller Lite and the Liberty Union
Bar and Grill in Chester Springs
in Kimberton.
Check out the Liberty Union.
Filly's games, $4 Miller Lite drafts
along with Liberty Union Burger fried egg
over easy spinach bacon and American cheese.
That sounds awesome.
Miller, I'll go with Saba.
Responsibly Fritzie.
Take it up.
Yeah, so speaking of Schwaber, this is fun.
Schwaber is probably gonna get there,
but he's closing in on another back to back 100
RBI, 100 run, 100 walkies.
Wow.
That's pretty amazing.
Is it 88 RBI?
Yeah.
Hopefully he can get there.
I think he'll probably get there.
He'll probably get there.
That's really impressive, man.
Well, do you know how many Phillies have done that twice?
They've had 100 RBI, 100 run, 100 walkies.
How many Phillies have done that twice?
Not many, I would guess.
There's only two.
I mean, Schmidt.
Schmidt.
Yeah.
And was my first thought.
A hundred RBI, a hundred walks, a hundred.
I mean, I would guess Chase, either Chase or Ryan.
Nope.
Bobby Abreu. Oh, I got, duh, duh. Honestly,. Nope. Bobby Abreu.
Oh, I got duh.
Honestly, I should have thought Abreu is always the answer to these things.
That was a bad job.
I mean, that was such an obvious, that was obvious too.
If I had really thought about it, that job.
30, pretty awesome.
32 and one when starters go seven now.
Yep.
And, uh, short bird tied the record for, uh, lead tied Soriano's record for
lead off home runs in a season yesterday, 13, 13.
So I'm assuming one more and he'll, he'll break that. I think Rollins has the record for the, obviously does have the record for leadoff home runs in a season yesterday. 13. So I'm assuming one more and he'll break that.
I think Rollins has the record for the... obviously does have the record for the Phillies. I think it's 46.
Career-wise. Yeah, I think so. So Shor was at 43 career-wise, but not with the Phillies overall. Yeah, but he's at 31.
One with the Phillies. Yeah, career-wise. I think he's at 43 or so. Yeah, so
What a player. What a player. What a player.
Also two, three home run games in the same season. I believe the first fully to ever do that. So well, it's first plan history
But I forget all the things that happen but like three home runs and two games with five plus RBI. Yeah, there's all those things
Really? I was looking it up because I assumed that having
Two home run two three home run games in a season would be pretty rare, incredibly
rare. Sammy says he's the only person who has never done it three times and then there's
a few people who have done it like Schwerber has. The most impressive though, Mookie Betts
has done it in two separate seasons. He's had two or three home runs.
Listen, as someone that's owned him in fantasy since 2014.
I was like, wow, dude. He is something else.
Well aware of the greatness of Mookie Bet's yeah Dodgers pretty good by the way
Yeah, they've seems like they've figured it out. They're getting glass now back like mmm. Yeah
The class is so much different this year than last year
They just really are all six teams are gonna be good. They're good. They're all good and last night
I actually gonna there's me a good team that misses the playoff
Well, you're right and that's why we've talked a lot about like the break between
Like if you know getting the buy is such a good thing talked a lot about like the break between, uh, like if, you
know, getting the buy is such a good thing. It is not like, I actually think this year it's like,
you desk, you need it. You don't want to play the diamond backs around. You can play diamond back.
The diamond backs could be coming here in the first round of playoffs. Are you kidding me?
Well, and, and given how Bryce currently looks like it, I just, I want as much rest as they
can add to that too. Yeah. So the two seat is imperative to an app up on that only half game
behind the Dodgers. They own the tiebreaker over both. Yeah. Cause they won the season. They already
own the over the Brewers, even though the series hasn't happened yet. Oh, you're right. So like,
yeah. So currently they own. Yeah. Did they swept the Brewers right? Or no. Yeah. So, so the point
is that maybe they can only tie. I don't know if they might have a run differential. Is that the
next one? Probably. So, or maybe it's division record there Their brewers are but it might be run differential games against each other.
I'm not sure how it works.
Either way, just take one and take one against at least one against the Brewers.
Yes. And then they do on the one over the Dodgers.
Yeah, that's over.
Which is over. Which is important.
And I mean, this is close. Of course.
Thirty two and one when starters go seven.
Yeah, that's really good.
It's the best in baseball.
They showed that, which is I wouldn't have guessed
that the Phillies would be the best in baseball. That's good. is I wouldn't have guessed the Phillies would be the best in baseball
That's good. I mean, I guess they'd be towards the top, but I wouldn't have said number one
And we've had some issues with the bullpen at times this year. It's well, yeah, I mean get locked down all year
I guess they were just so ridiculous in the first. Yeah
And stuff like that Ranger and I see what he looks like tonight third start, you know coming off the DIL so
But again, this is Johnson's day on Sunday.
I know everyone's been watching your little football.
Oh, yeah. I didn't think about that.
By the way, Eagles and Phillies on Friday night.
That's really fun. Of course, a lot going on.
I actually have bad memories because remember, they have the Eagles played that day.
But I remember in 2020, they went down to Miami
and they had this game series on a Sunday.
Horrible. It was awful.
I mean, that's one of the worst series of the history of the podcast.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm sure we were calm.
After that, can I tell you something?
I think we've talked about this since, but in hindsight, I'm so happy they didn't
make playoffs that year.
I'm so happy.
Why?
In 2020, it wouldn't have been special.
Like think about what 2022 was for us to be all be able to go back to make Park do that
whole thing like no one would have been there.
Like it wouldn't have been like I wouldn't want the first time back in the
and I know it probably was still spent the first time we can be there.
I don't think Susan would have felt the same.
That's what it wouldn't have the same.
It might have been similar.
You know, it would have been great to be back.
And I like it wouldn't have been the same like the weight thing.
Like in hindsight, I'm happy to miss Oh, I would like a hot take
I wish I wish we could go back to 2020 seltzer and tell him hey four years from now. You're gonna say
Yeah, that's beautiful
We get it. I'm sure you would have been nice and calm and then really only the the last thing I have here in the
Take back is that I think Caleb Coffman has done it again. And this time I think he's done it with
Carlos Estevez. Yeah, dude
I thought he I think so it looks to me that he's added more depth to the slider and
Getting the the slider to be on a different plane than the fastball has made look that much better now
He's mixing a change of yesterday to close the game
Which I was dying for I could please throw the change up because obviously he was set up for it but like the fastball I thought
two weeks ago, a week and a half ago the fastball and the slider were essentially on the same plane.
The slider had like a little bit of depth. Now it looks like he's added a couple inches of depth to
it so it just it just makes him that much tougher to hit and I think you've seen the results of that.
Very clear. Much more clean innings rather than hard contact all over and more
strikeouts.
It's been noticeable. And obviously those two innings against the Braves was
just, I mean, that was, that was his best moment as of today.
So I still want Hoffman in a perfect world closing out the ninth, but he was
smart yesterday, like Hoffman in for the eighth against Springer and Vladdy, by
the way, Vlad is a good player.
Like, dude, what a hitter.
Like he really,
I know he's a great fielder too, but like, and that he's a good fielder, but like that moment
he had obviously was not good. It was fun. Langley wrap it up. But, but just as a hitter, man,
the way he just sprays the ball over the field, the power, the whole thing. Like he is, he is a
special player. I do wonder if they trade in the sauce. I mean, rice back to right field, buddy.
Back to right. Let's go get flattie back here.
But yeah, it was a good weekend series for in Miami, a weekday series for Miami and hope
Rice doesn't play in one of them.
I hope he doesn't play in all four.
Yes.
That's what I would do.
I would say Bryce series off.
Take some time.
Relax, buddy.
We got the Brewers on Monday.
It's go time.
Go time.
Is it Brewers?
No, it's the following week. Yes. The
Brewers are that's why I was thinking of it because the
games they're up against Eagles on Monday night. That's what it
was. And what are you gonna be watching?
Eagles, of course. Yeah, now the raise next we're gonna watch
both. You know what what I do? I got the raise next week. And
then they got that's the M is that's the Mets next night
Yeah, man, I got seven against the Mets left or something at six minutes, Matt
So that's that's a playing of baseball a lot of Frankie Lindor for MVP buzz your voice spike
Out there like Dorsing. Yeah, I mean they endorsement it like he's at a nice season
Like I don't care the choice like he's the
It's it's it's absurd.
The guy's gonna go 50 50 something like what are we doing here?
Yeah. Yeah. And Lynn and Lynn dorks are gonna be mad as they should be.
Just the idea that was like showing all right, so you can't pitch this year just
focus on hitting. Okay, no problem.
And then you spot
I think water just drift on me.
Good, good, good.
All right.
Well, I think that's a sign to end the pot.
You got anything else?
No, no, I'm just so happy there.
They're there.
Collapse.
Oh, thank God.
All right.
We'll be back after the weekend until that.
He's for themselves. You
