Welcome on in it is the final out Jack Fritz hanging out with you here on this Tuesday night as we react
to a packed ballpark a
Tight ballpark at one point, but it looks like we might be okay from that standpoint
And ultimately the Phils exit this one with a two
Nothing win and now stand nine and a half games nine and a half games up on those

You just sat on your couch and watch this one
Like I did would love to hear from you would love to get your biggest takeaways from this one. But speaking of the biggest takeaways
Let's get to you. Let's get to them brought to you by Morgan & Morgan
America's largest injury law firm and
Again, there's there's different ways that the Phillies can beat you
They've shown in the last two weeks that offensively they can get hot.
It's not always home run.
I know people like to have this old adage with the Phillies
that all they try to do is hit home runs.
It's not true.
So if any of your friends out there
are still poo-pooing the Phillies,
and they still like to say, hey, wake me up in October.
What's really changed?
Well, I think the one thing that you
can hang your hat on on this team changing and believing in some of the changes
is if you're one of those people that did not like
the home runner bust mindset,
which I think in the post season it's fair.
You know, in the regular season it's fine.
You can slug your way to regular season wins.
You can slug your way home run wise to 90 plus wins.
But when it comes down to the nitty gritty,
when it comes down to the nitty gritty, when it comes down to postseason baseball,
where pitchers are better, situations are more tight,
I think obviously home runs, you can't just not
be able to hit home runs.
But I think the ability to get some base heads,
work the pitcher, get walks past the baton
is just more important.
We've seen in the last two post seasons,
when the Phillies, or even three,
when I go back to the 22 World Series,
when they can get hot from long distance,
when they can go on these runs of just launching home runs,
offense is fine in the post season.
When that dries up, they've really struggled.
I mean, that's what happened in the Diamondback series.
Last year, they didn't really get off the ground.
So it's not always going to be pretty
when that's really the basis of your offense.
But when you have this pitching staff,
and it's so exciting to, like, if you just type in,
fill these probable pitchers, right,
and you're looking at who they have coming up
on the mound, you feel like you have a good shot
to win every single game.
I mean, every single game.
Was tonight an offensive clinic?
Absolutely not.
Did they get an insurance run late because they passed baton?
Yeah.
Did they score early without the long ball? Yeah was Spencer Strider on the mound
Was he pretty good? Yeah, it's
It's it's just not every game is gonna be perfect
And I think tonight was was the Phillies finding a different way to to beat you against a pretty good brave scene now
The CUNY is back and that lineup is just so much better when he is in there
They are the lineup becomes extra scary when scary when Acuna is a part of it.
But Ranger tonight, I didn't think he had his best stuff.
But what I give the Phillies pitchers the most credit
this year with is I think they've
done a really good job of grinding through outings.
There's been a lot of time this year
where I didn't think Chris Sanchez has best stuff, but he's grinding through outings. There's been a lot of time this year where I didn't think Chris Sanchez has his best stuff,
but he's grinding through outings.
Hazel Lizardo, I think in Miami the last couple of years,
now he's pretty good in 23,
but you know, and things weren't going his way as a Marlin,
he kind of just folded.
And here, maybe because he's pitching for a team
with World Series aspirations,
not every game has been at home,
but maybe pitching in front of this crowd.
Maybe there's a little bit extra in Jesus Lizardo.
And they talked about when they traded for him
that they felt like he was a bulldog in the mound.
I didn't really see it.
I saw more of a four or five inning guy
with really dominant possible stuff,
but he is turning into a pitcher here
and he's grinding his way through some of these outings.
And it hasn't always been his stuff is just electric
and he's overpowering other teams.
He's pitching.
He's pitching.
Wheeler, not every start has great, great stuff.
His last start out in Sacramento in that garbage mound,
terrible mound as he called it,
he grinded his way through it.
It wasn't perfect.
And that's what I give the Phillies pitching staff credit
with is that even when they're not totally sharp,
totally on their A game,
it feels like they have a plan B when plan A isn't working.
Sometimes even a plan C.
I thought tonight,
Ranger didn't really have great command of anything
besides his fastball.
And I thought that,
I think the one thing we've noticed in some Ranger starts
is the first four are usually pretty dang good.
And it's like, wow, look at Ranger Suarez.
But then that fifth, sixth is where it starts getting,
I think he's getting his legs underneath him a little bit
because you start to see the command waiver.
Sometimes he gets runners on.
Stretch-wise, I don't know, I think tonight
he didn't have a great feel for his change-ups
at certain points.
I didn't think he had great feel for his slider.
He's more out of the zone than I'm used to
from a range of score I started.
I'm used to him being all over the strike zone
and when he's at his best, he's just a little bit outside the strike zone and getting guys to chase a range of score. I started I'm used to him being all over the strike zone and and when he's at his best
He's just a little bit outside the strike zone and getting guys to chase some of his pitches. So I
The offense is gonna come or go. I think there's a lot of encouraging signs with it tonight was a
One of those wins you just had a again grind out but man this pitching staff is an absolute
treat every single time
They're out there an absolute treat two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four to get in some other takeaways
Big one here. Let's get to the injury report, which is brought to you by the Plumbers Union local 690
protecting the health of the nation visit plumbers
690 protecting the health of the nation visit plumbers 690
Org big one here. Obviously. Yeah, I'm sure everyone's panicking in their group chats Bryce arbor smoked by Spencer Strider
Strider said after the game, he's not a sociopath. Of course, he felt bad. It was not intentional. Yada. Yada. Yada I don't think it was intentional either. That's probably why you didn't see the Phillies retaliate
I still would have liked to see retaliation.
I do have that old school aspect to me.
And I think Bryce Harper had appreciated it,
but ultimately I care more about coming out of this game
with a win rather than putting a base runner on
for almost no reason.
And hopefully in one of these next couple of games,
we can get Carlos Hernandez in there
in like a five run ballgame and and he can
Take care of he can do a job. So
Retaliation obviously the old school is a little bit like hey, they got our they got him. Let's go get ours
Part of the game. I think it's fine. Obviously not throwing up someone's head
But they didn't and I at the same time, I agree with it
because I want them to beat the Braves.
And I want them to bury the Braves.
And we don't need base runners to extend this one.
But either way, Harper, x-rays were negative.
Kind of looked like he got hit in the funny bone.
And getting smoked on the funny bone at 95 miles an hour,
I think I'd freak out too.
A lot of hardos online saying, oh, he's being dramatic.
Well, I think if you got smoked at 95 in the arm after you've been hit two times over the
weekend and two times in consecutive at bats you might be a little jumpy and
especially when you get smoked in the funny bone so seems like we dodged a
bullet there I think we were all ready to call up auto camp it's auto camp
and see how that was gonna go but Bryce looks like he's gonna be okay and
that's obviously good tomorrow might get rained out so you know maybe they just give the night
who knows we'll obviously have to see how he wakes up tomorrow because obviously the the adrenaline
on on on the game kind of takes over um so yeah we'll see but seems like they avoided a disaster there
And I just didn't like Bryce's had so many of these annoying little injuries
I mean you go back to Genesis Cabrera hitting him in the Cardinals
Was at 22 and then you had the the the Snell thing actually the Snell thing was probably 22 either way back-to-back years
Of getting smoked up and in
Causes him to miss time. We don't need that. We don't need it was probably 22. Either way, back to back years of getting smoked up and in
causes him to miss time.
We don't need that.
We don't need that for Bryce.
So it looks like, again, we avoided a disaster here,
but man, he's gotten hit three out of the last four games.
So yeah, we got to knock that stuff out.
And then finally, the bullpen of the night was great.
I think we're always going to feel pretty good.
You're not going to feel like you can just kick your feet up and the game's over when you go to Kirkering strong Romano
but I think you'll feel pretty good about him and Kirkering to his credit since Jose Alvarado went down has not allowed her run and
It's pitched in some some really big spots. I thought Saturday
Showed a lot of stones from Orion Kirkering. I thought tonight
I mean pretty pretty effortless
against some of the big boppers in the Braves lineup.
So I thought Kirkering, he needs to step up
with Alvarado being out.
I think he's feeling that a little bit.
I think you're starting to see
a little bit more swagger from him.
You need that as a reliever.
You need to have swagger.
You need to have this almost
Cocky belief that you are unhittable out there to be a great reliever and I think sometimes he he has some confidence issues. Well
With alvarado being down there's a lot of pressure in ryan kirkering to be a difference maker from the right side and be
A a weapon and a fireman and someone that they can go to in big spots in the seventh and eighth
inning, which Alvarado was starting to do because Romano
had settled into that closest role.
It certainly seems strong, good bounce back effort
after a tough game out in Sacramento.
Maybe we can blame the mound for that.
I don't know, but either way, he's kind of been shaky this year.
Hasn't been as locked down as he was last year,
but still good to see him get through that.
And then one I think we can definitely
chalk up to the mound out in Sacramento
is Jordan Romano, who looks much closer to the Jordan Romano
we've seen for the most part of this month of May, which
I don't believe he had allowed a run before that last outing.
And in that last outing, it looked
like he was just slipping all over the mound.
He could not gain traction.
And you saw his velocity dropped like 92, 93.
Everything was flat.
Tonight, got back on top of the slider.
It was on its disappearing stuff.
And it was just another one, two, three.
Easy 9-fitting for Jordan Romano.
What a turnaround.
But bullpen when those three go, I think you
certainly feel pretty good about it. Two one five five nine two 94 94 to get in. Thomas
is in a brew mall. What's happening Thomas? Oh, what's up? Uh, great win. I'm glad they
won. Uh, definitely was hoping for, you know, some more, some more offense, but uh, Hey,
when you can, when you can beat the Braves, doesn't matter if it's one-noth and two-noth and whatever,
it's definitely huge to win a game in your division.
Well, yeah.
And at this point, you're still in the stacking wins
point of the year.
You don't need to all be the prettiest.
You just got to get them done.
And they're now 9 and 1 half up on the Braves.
It's pretty massive.
Yeah, I mean, I'm glad that we get to face a better team
than we have with the Rockies and the A's
to actually see what you have.
I mean, we're a good team, obviously.
But just playing with teams, you know, keeping games close.
And I'm glad Bryce will definitely bounce back.
I mean, even if they do get rained out tomorrow and they play a double header on Thursday,
I mean, do you see Bryce playing those games?
Yeah.
If they do play a double header?
Yeah.
I mean, it's tough to know right now.
Obviously, I mean, we'll see how he wakes up tomorrow, but I would assume that I
Would assume that his x-rays are negative seems like more of a bruise thing that he maybe misses tomorrow
Just out of precaution, and then he's back in there on on a Thursday
We'll see again
Maybe maybe it's rained out tomorrow and they can get a free day
And then he plays both ends of the double header That'd be pretty sweet two and five five nine two and ninety four ninety four to get in if you're leaving the ballpark
We'd love to hear from you
but on the other side some thoughts on the lineup change tonight and
One they could be monitoring plus we'll get to the player of the game as well
All that's coming up next on the final out on sports radio 94 w IP

Three and two. Runners go. The payoff pitch. Down and away, ball four. And JT draws the
bases loaded walk as Baum will score and it's two to nothing Phillies
Yeah, I needed that one late. I needed that one late and JT
obviously moved down the lineup today and an interesting move by
by Rob Thompson and obviously, you know how much respect that that JT
commands in that locker room and And obviously, you know how much respect that JT commands
in that locker room.
And I think Rob Thompson respects JT.
And I think it shows that the players in that clubhouse
trust Rob Thompson.
He's not going to put them in a bad position.
He's not going to try to show them up.
But he's clearly been struggling this year and
I think it shows a certain certain amount of gumption
To move jt down so bohm moved up the fifth today casting out was down one spot
Yeah, I listen
I was I would have been fine if they kept bohm down because I think he was doing a good job and having a
decently impactful bat that low in the lineup
is always an interesting thing to have.
But I get it, and he's someone who you hope
is hitting in the middle of the lineup.
And you know, was fine tonight.
Was good at some, you know, he got a hit late and whatnot.
He got a walk, which was nice.
But yeah, big insurance run late.
And you know, back on JT for one second
It's clear the the bat is not
That good anymore
I mean he's a he's a fine hitting catcher what made him the best catcher in baseball is obviously what he did on both ends
but I really do think that when people talk about
But I really do think that when people talk about
Cooked and and done and you can't resign them and and yada yada yada And why I don't want to resign him for 25 million a year or even 20 million a year
I I don't think that we put enough
credit on JT shoulders for for what he does with this pitching staff and
You know, I think I thought a couple of years ago,
it wasn't great at calling a game,
but I think he's really developed from that aspect.
And you look at the pitching staff last year,
and you look at what this pitching staff is doing so far
this year, that's where the value in JT at this point
is, is in what he is doing behind the plate
and what he's doing defensively. Still great back there and
Like the offense is almost just you take what you can get at this point. Obviously it's frustrating when he's
grounded into ten double plays. It feels like one a game, you know, it's not actually one a game
but it feels like it and and some of the offensive stuff is is really really annoying, but
I just think the value he brings behind the plate
and what he's doing with the staff
right now for the second straight year, where they are
one of the best in baseball, he deserves
a lot of accolades for that.
So shout out to JT.
And again, I think that's a good pulse on the
team kind of move from Rob Thompson. Now one that I think is interesting and
I wouldn't do it yet but I think we can monitor it here a little bit. So heading
into tonight Trey Turner as a leadoff hitter in a game now most of it's been
against left-handed pitching but still as a leadoff hitter he a game. Now, most of it's been against left-handed pitching. But still, as a lead-off hitter, he's hitting 328.
He's hitting over 300 on the season, so it's fine.
But it's not like hitting two is totally derailed this season.
But Stott in the last month heading into tonight
was batting 205.
Now, he did have some classic.
He had a classic start at bat in the middle of this one
where he fouled off a million pitches
against Spencer Strider.
And he worked a walk late, which is good.
But I think Turner being Turner now, and Harvard batting two,
and Shore batting third, I wonder if at some point
they would just go to that and stick Trey Turner
in the leadoff spot, and maybe move
Scott back down toward the middle
and lower portion of the lineup
if they wanna go back to more of an old school kind of way
or more of a new school kind of way.
Overall, you're winning games,
you let Scott kind of work his way through that, I think.
And again, the most important part is still
Schorber hitting behind Bryce.
So I think it's one to definitely keep your eye on,
because obviously they've been moving some struggling guys
down and Scott heading into the night had been struggling.
Again, I thought he had a good night tonight.
But overall, I think it's one of those things where maybe
just let him work his way through it.
But I certainly think it's an interesting one.
We'll get to the player of the game here in a second.
But Dave's in Maryland.
What's happening, Dave? Hey, what's up, man? Brady went is just a you know, I mean when your first
First inning Bryce goes down
Obviously you're sitting on your couch and you know how you feel when that happens the players and dugout have to feel that stadium feels
That and he just looked like he was I mean he looked he was in a lot of pain
Obviously and you know you're
thinking the worst then but I just thought Ranger stepped up again grinded through six
innings and then the bullpen was nails tonight they did a great job Kirk Ring is you know
give him a lot of credit for stepping up over the last couple of last couple weeks it's
been a pleasant pleasant addition to what we thought he was going to be. And it's great to see and always great to be the Braves and Strider just didn't seem,
I know he only gave up one run, but he just didn't seem himself. I think the Braves have
some work to do because they, you know, nine and a half back, I think the Phillies could
put them away, hopefully, you know, or go towards it this week.
Yeah. And I, and I, and I bridge the phone call. It's Strider's interesting. He was down
to like 95 tonight and that's the one thing that hasn't bounced back post Tommy John.
But man, you look at, at that Braves team that has been constructed by, uh, Alex Anthropolis
or whatever, you know, obviously a Cun back makes them more dangerous, and the top of the line is still
good, but Acuna, Riley, fine.
Ozuna has been really good.
That Matt Olson trade, he was great the one year, we had the 54 home runs, but they gave
up Freddie Freeman, and they let Freddie Freeman walk for a younger player, and Freddie Freeman's
hitting like 360 something.
So and that's that's a guy that should have been a lifelong brave.
But then you get to like the the Sean Murphys and Eli White and Michael Harris has been brutal and sort of that Nick Allen kid.
And then even the bullpen like Eniel De santos is taking down important innings for them
Rafael Montero they pulled off of waivers even that hernandez guy that came in. I mean he was he was all over the place. So
man, anthropolous was good a couple years ago, but that is a uh, that is a a top heavy roster
That is a top heavy roster
All right
The uh player of the game is obviously Ranger Suarez
The player of the game is always brought to you by South Jersey gas conserve helping customers and the community save energy and money
visit South Jersey gas comm slash conserve and
It was interesting again tonight and you know, they've been doing this ever since the Alvarado injury because of their their bullpen situation, but
Ranger
Extended again another inning where he did
have a stressful fifth inning where he went bases loaded and was able to pitch his way
out of it.
And you could have made the argument to pull him there.
Maybe if they had a more fully stocked bullpen, you can or you could have, but where they're
currently at, where they have three arms they can really trust in tight games
you got to extend your studs and
It's it's something that I think it's fair to worry about when you're thinking about
August and September but you know
I think the the nice part about where they're currently at is they have such a plethora of starting pitchers that if they want to if they want to put these guys on on an IL stint
well if you want to say Phantom IL or not like they're they have so many guys
that they can just start and this obviously as long as these guys are
healthy but let's say Ranger you can you can put on the IL for a couple starts
let him rest a little bit obviously Noah's going through his injury right now.
His ankles not totally bouncing back yet, but you know, Chris Sanchez,
I think I think they're in a good spot with what Abel showed in his first
outing. Obviously Andrew Painter is coming.
He is going to throw into the sixth inning or 80 to 85 pitches his next time out.
So he's knocking on the doorstep. We've seen what Taiwan has done. Now Taiwan, they're
saying when he goes back to being a reliever, when Noel is back, that they're just going
to leave him there. We'll see if that sticks, but obviously if they needed him in the rotation,
they'll use him there. but still, it's a good
problem to have and I guess at this point when you are down bullpen pieces and you can't
really fix it until July, you just got to extend these guys and hope for the best late
in the season.
Wheeler you don't really worry about, but everyone else.
As Lizardo, somebody you got to worry about from this standpoint because he's putting a lot of innings on an arm that hasn't done it
I mean 32 starts a couple years ago was his biggest year start wise
So it's it's certainly something they're gonna have to there's a delicate balance
but you also have to win ballgames and you have a chance to kind of bury this Atlanta team and and
Rob Thompson was aggressive with it from that standpoint.
All right, on the other side, we will get a look ahead
to tomorrow, wrap up your phone calls, all in the final out

pitch swung on, ripped towards right center field.
It's deep on the run and unable to get it is Acuna.
It's going to land at the base of the wall.
Bones coming in to third, the ball checked up at the wall.
Bones being waved around third.
There'll be no throw to the plate.
And Max Kepler delivers an RBI double in the Phillies.
Take a 1-0 lead.
Listen, he hasn't been perfect for sure. But Kepler's had a couple moments recently obviously the home runoff of Mason Miller
The other night and that one was was good to see as well was was that a really good stretch for about three weeks
and then I mean
May's been really tough on Max Kepler
Hopefully he's starting to fight his way out of this thing and and they can get more production from from left field
But either way it was good to see him at least get that hit and obviously the Mason Miller home run was awesome
And he actually did a really important important diving play in the eighth
To again not allow a base runner at that point in a one running game. So
He hasn't been he hasn't been an unbelievable addition. I think he's been
solid, you know, he's been average.
And you know, Lazardo has been a win.
Romano, shockingly, I think has been more of a win
than not after the beginning of his season.
Maybe Kepler can round in a form here,
but either way, good to see him get that hit there.
Welcome back.
It is the final out.
Jack Fritz hanging out with you, reacting to a Phil's win over the Braves again nine and a half up
on Atlanta now in the division. Braves still three games under 500 and a couple
tough seasons so far for for the Braves after last year as well. Let's see what
Frank in Beachwood's got. What's happening Frank? I was at the game there Jack. How you doing Jackie? Very nice very nice. A little
festive atmosphere tonight down at the ballpark. It was very very festive at the
ballpark. It was it's my birthday today Jack. Oh congratulations buddy. Happy
birthday. Yeah I'm just an old man though, you know, so whatever another birthday, but that means my wife was at the game and
We all know we all know that I'm kind of going crazy because I seen it
I was like on the third base line and I seen
Bryce get hit and
I'm not sure what happened. What would happen to Bryce? Can you tell me?
Oh, well, I mean he got street he went he went back and the x-rays were negative.
Okay, good.
Is it the elbow or was it the forearm?
It looks like a contusion, again, not to play internet doctor,
but it kind of looked like he got hit on the funny bone.
Nothing is broken or anything, which is good.
Excellent. That's not an ACL. That's not the Tommy John arm, is it?
Actually, I think it is the Tommy John arm, but it should that shouldn't have been just hitting anything
I mean he did come back from Tommy John and was pretty great. So
He's not gonna tear it on an inside pitch. Let's put it that way
All right. Good. Yeah, so look all so I'm in so far. Yep. All right. Well, I'm safe travels and happy birthday Frank
Yeah, so that is the arm that he had the Tommy John on but again, you can't you're not gonna retare it with getting hit
