What's the best podcast of all time?
Baseball isn't boring, baby.
I'm Rob Bradford, and every single day I'm sitting down with the biggest names
to show you this great game is the greatest game.
It's my podcast. It's my passion.
It's a cause I started more than two years ago.
It is now the most prolific national daily baseball pod there is.

And Nelson kicks and fires, and the pitch swung on, popped up.

Pirates in the opening game of this four-game set.
5-1 the final.
Well, wasn't it fitting that on the two-year anniversary of I bleeping hate this place,
Alec Boehm makes a fine, fine play to secure one of the better Phillies wins of the season.
Welcome on in.
It is the final out.
Sponsored by Regency Furniture.
Affordable never looks so good.
Jack Fritz hanging out with you on this Thursday evening.
Yet again, another rainy Thursday,
but they were able to get a ball game in tonight.
And I guess we have to wake up every day expecting it to be rainy.
But regardless, good win tonight.
Let's get into it. The game wraps sponsored by Blazer Swiss Lube and Kravitz,
the metalworking fluid specialist,
providing professional CNC machine cleaning coolant maintenance programs
and waste coolant disposal.
Crevits.online.
A lot to get into.
Biggest takeaways of the game brought to you by Morgan & Morgan,
America's largest injury firm.
First big takeaway from tonight.
And again, if you're on your way home, you're leaving the ballpark.
2-1-5-5-9-2, 94-94 to get in.
First big takeaway is finally some pop.
I mean, holy cow. I mean, the only time they had three home runs in a game so far this year
was the Bryce game.
It was good to see some other guys get into the mix.
Alec Boehm obviously
made the final play tonight, but
got the game
started with a home run. Jared Jones
is really good tonight.
He's a young pitcher. I know a lot of people
didn't know who he was heading into the game
tonight, but again, he had 17
strikeouts in his first two starts.
If he turned on the game
tonight, flash him plus stuff. So
they had their work cut out for him. It's not to make excuses for him, but he's a good young
pitcher and he had some good stuff. And it was nice to see Alec Boehm finally break through
with his first home run of the year. And the last couple of games for Boehm, it looks like he's
making a more concerted effort to go the
opposite way and when he's doing that I think that's when you're getting the best version of
Alec Boehm like listen I would love if he turns into a a pull hitting 25 to 30 home run guy because
he can be that I mean he's a six he's a six five guy he's strong he shouldn't really be that kind
of hitter but man the best version of Alec Boehm is thinking the opposite way.
You know, maybe thinking more gap to gap, not trying to lift the baseball.
And ultimately, it's just getting the best out of Alec Boehm.
And the last couple games, again, thinking more opposite field.
Maybe that's getting him more in line.
And it was good to see him finally break through with the first big home run.
Brandon Marsh just continues to shine I mean there's already some some all-star game buzz campaign
with Brandon Marsh playing a put a good center field tonight been able to obviously be a plus
plus defender in left field and and just like his pop to the opposite way has been shocking.
I mean, there were some times last year where he'd get into it
and drive it the opposite way.
But, I mean, he took Strider opposite way on opening day.
He's gone the opposite way on, I believe, three of his four home runs.
I mean, the one in St. Louis was not that.
But still, you're seeing some serious, serious pop to the opposite way from Brandon Marsh.
And I didn't know that was in his game.
You know, like last year he had a couple.
But, I mean, that one tonight, I said to myself, that's a pop-up.
You know, that might get to the wall.
But that's not going out.
And, man, the strength of Brandon Marsh.
I guess, like, when they traded for him, I was like, ah, he's kind of a smaller guy.
And, you know, I guess not that strong.
He's big, man.
He is big, and he's built.
And you're starting to really see that power display this year for Brandon Marsh.
So, yet again, just continuing to be the Phillies' best player so far.
And obviously, Bryson Stott's best swing of the year.
I thought the bat looked quick on that.
In the last series against St. Louis, he hit a ball two nights ago, I believe.
No, it was three nights ago.
Where they needed a sack fly, and he got into it.
Now, it didn't go out, but you could tell he was close.
And then yesterday, he hit a ball to the wall in St. Louis.
And again, kind of had the feeling that it was close.
Bang, tonight, bats quickening up.
Because the beginning of the year, it really looks like he was swinging a telephone ball.
Like the bat just looked heavy.
That was a quick, quick bat from Bryson Stott.
So good to see some pop.
Good to see some of the younger guys get on the board.
Good to see some pop.
Good to see some of the younger guys get on the board.
And good to see Brandon Marsh continuing his super, super strong start to the season.
But my player of the game, which is sponsored by South Jersey Gas Conserve,

I'm giving it to Ranger. And it feels like this Ranger Suarez breakout season is finally upon us.
And I've talked a lot about Ranger to begin the season here,
where how he's viewed nationally as more of an unknown.
And you look at his overall regular season stats the last couple years.
And nationally, I actually think Chris sanchez is viewed in a more
positive light meanwhile here we treat ranger as as one of the aces on this staff now he's obviously
more of a 2b 3a kind of starter but you know we're seeing the rangers juarez that we've seen in the
postseason the last couple years translate over into the regular season that fastball command is massive
for him i thought he did a good job committing both sides of the plate his curveball he's added
a he's always throwing like a knuckle curve but it seems like he's added more depth to it change
ups good like this is the ranger that we see in the postseason that's now translating to the
regular season and that's huge because the postseason Ranger has been ridiculous the last
couple years. Eight strikeouts tonight, two hits in total command, never flinching. The Rangers
Suarez breakout is here, and it just continues to look phenomenal. So couldn't be happier with
what Ranger's doing. This starting staff is putting together quite the start to the season. It really is.
Between Wheeler, Nola besides his first start has been good.
Ranger, Chris Sanchez has been good.
And obviously Spencer Turnbull hasn't allowed a run yet.
So this starting staff is just coming together really, really nice.
And Ranger is just continuing his kind of breakout season here,
which is just phenomenal.
Third big takeaway from tonight, and it's a quick one
because it was a semi-quick inning for him,
but it feels like Junior Marte is on that Jeff Hoffman track.
Last year I was very pro-Marte.
The stuff just popped, and he had a couple moments in the regular season.
You know, he closed out the game in Oakland
that no one really thought he was going to be able to do.
He didn't really inspire much confidence last year, He closed out the game in Oakland that no one really thought he was going to be able to do.
He didn't really inspire much confidence last year,
and it looks like he lost his confidence at a lot of points last year.
Well, that's a race now.
He seems like he is in a really good zone.
He's commanding his fastball.
He's not walking the ballpark.
Slider has some bite. If you threw some high sliders tonight, I couldn't tell if that was more missing his spot or on purpose. Because if it's on
purpose, that's not a terrible spot
for his
slider. But that fastball
just continues to eat up right-handers.
So, you know, Jeff Hoffman
last year kind of came out of nowhere
and has now developed into
the most reliable right-handed option
out of the bullpen. But man, Junior
Marte, no earned tonight. No earned on the year, no earned tonight,
and continuing to just do a really, really solid job.
And especially, you know, Kirkering we'll get to in a second,
but Sir Anthony, I think, is causing more.
People aren't totally trusting Sir Anthony at this point.
Junior Marte is maybe pushing for more spots over Sir Anthony.
It was a tight ball game. He came into the night, and he did a job. So Junior Marte,
really good start to the season. And my fourth big takeaway, some good and bad from the lineup.
I just thought it was a decent Castellanos night. I know we're grasping at straws here,
or could be grasping at straws here, or could be grasping at straws here,
but I thought at least he was thinking opposite way.
He hit some more balls hard.
It wasn't totally feeble at the plate.
So I thought it was a step in the right direction for Nick Castellanos.
You just heard Rob Thompson, Bryce Harper,
just seems like he's a little bit off timing-wise.
Had no hits in the Cardinal series. Had no hits tonight. Did smoke a ball 110 miles an hour that ended up being
a double play, which stunk. Seems like he's hitting into some bad luck, but regardless, he's a little
bit off. And Whit Merrifield, I know he had a home run foul, but it's just, for a guy who has
had the most hits in baseball since 2017,
I knew it wasn't going to be the hardest contact in the world,
but he's got to figure it out.
And I know he only played like two times in the last week,
so it's not like he's getting the most appearances out there.
But overall, the Whitmerryfield signing, not off to a hot start. Hopefully he can kind of get going here.
Because again, like that situation Tuesday night,
bases loaded one out and a lefty on the mound.
That's why Whitmerryfield's here, to hit for Johan Rojas and come through.
Wasn't able to do that.
Gets a start tonight.
Doesn't really do much with it.
A little bit of a disappointing start to the season for Whitmerryfield.
215-592-9494 is how you get in.
If you're leaving the ballpark, get in.
Would love to talk to you.
33,000 down the ballpark tonight.
Again, not the best weather to start the baseball season,
but still a good, loud crowd down at CBP.
Jim in the Northeast kicks us off tonight.
What's happening, Jim?
Hey, Frank.
Thanks for taking my call, sir.
What's going on, man?
Hey, just leaving the ballpark.
Really good atmosphere, I would agree with you.
Good atmosphere for the start of the
series. Two takeaways
and a question for you. Great to
see the daycare
hitting the long ball for us tonight.
Ranger
Suarez, it's the first time, even being a partial season guy,
seeing Ranger on television and seeing him in person, it's like night and day.
I mean, he's great command, had the Pirates hitters off balance tonight.
So really, really good to see.
And my question is, is Marsh turning into an everyday player?
Like, is Rob putting him in every day for the rest of the season?
What are your thoughts?
Yeah, I appreciate the call, Jim.
I think so.
You know, he's going to have obviously some days off.
But I think for the most part he's earned the right to be an everyday player.
And he's been facing lefties more and more the last week, I want to say.
You know, the season's like not that old. But he's been facing more lefties. more the last week, I want to say. You know, the season's, like, not that old.
But he's been facing more lefties.
He's been moved up in the order.
I think, you know, I was surprised at how it kind of feels like they don't totally trust him.
But it's good to see at least they're open to trusting Brandon Marsh.
And they should be because he's been phenomenal.
And Ranger, like, he just has always reminded me of Cliff Lee.
He's not as dynamic as Cliff Lee, obviously.
When Cliff Lee got rolling, he was nasty.
He's honestly, he's really a mix between Jamie Moyer and Cliff Lee.
He has the Cliff Lee demeanor on the mound where balls hit back to him,
really nonchalant, gets it over to first base.
He works really quick, and he has no problem pitching
inside and setting
hitters up that way. I love
watching him pitch. He is a true
pitcher's pitcher, in a way.
If you love nerding out
the pitchers, I think he is just
a truly phenomenal watcher, and really a lot
of these guys are. The Phillies
are a staff that
prioritizes, I think, command over stuff.
It's not like they have the most stuff-built rotation, but they know how to pitch. Nolan
knows how to pitch. Wheeler's going from 99 to 94. He's even developing from a pitching standpoint
with that new splitter he's working on. Christopher Sanchez knows how to pitch.
Ranger Suarez knows how to pitch.
Spencer Turnbull so far.
I mean, if I'm a hitter trying to square up Spencer Turnbull,
I don't know what's coming.
I mean, he's been able to locate five pitches.
So they are a treat to watch,
and it's why they are rated so highly by so many websites.
But, man, the Ranger Suarez breakout really feels like it's here,
and it's an exciting, exciting time.
215-592-9494 is how you get in.
Next on the final out, some important developments down in Clearwater tonight,
and the one person that we have to thank for tonight.
We'll get to all that coming up next.

It is the final out, sponsored by Regency Furniture.
Our affordable never looked so good.
Jack Fritz hanging out with you here,
reacting to a nice, nice, nice Phil's win
over the Pirates tonight.
And yes, I know, the Pirates before the season,
it was like, ha ha, they stink, Phil's just sweet.
9-3 heading into the game tonight.
Some good, exciting young players.
One of their better young pitchers on the mound tonight.
So it was a good win.
And beating the Pirates is no longer some kind of pushover.
It wasn't the most impressive lineup just watching it.
But listen, they've won ballgames.
They have some veterans.
And it's still a good win given some of the frustrating baseball
that we've seen to begin this season.
We'll get back to the phones here in one second.
But there's only one person that we have to thank for tonight's game,
and that is the one and only Howard Eskin,
who before the game just grilling Rob Thompson about this team
and how much they need to slug, yada, yada, yada.
Here's that interaction from earlier today.
Once again, just thank you so much, Howard,
helping out this team one day at a time Rob Thompson
postgame asking where Howard was so uh shout out to the king once again helping his insider of the
year case with with getting the most out of the fills tonight they came out they responded
smells like a t-shirt you know we're putting together t-shirt ideas they're gonna slug and
they know it whatever but uh shout out to the gang.
Great stuff by him.
Back to the phones here.
And Connor in South Philly.
What's happening, Connor?
Hey, what's up, Jack?
Real quick shout out.
I want to give some recognition to you and Fritz.
High Hopes is one of my very favorites.
But I got to tell you, I was out with my buddies in Ashburn Alley tonight,
you know, standing out in the outfield.
And I got to say, you know, first and foremost, when you see the daycare,
you see Stop, Boma, Marsh, I'll Go Yard.
I mean, the whole place is going nuts.
You got a rainy night.
You don't think anyone's going to be out there.
You got over 30,000 people.
It was a show.
Yeah, it was good to see, man.
I was worried.
The Red Series was obviously really desolate in a way,000 people. It was a show. Yeah, it was good to see, man. The Red Series was obviously
really desolate in a way, I guess.
But, you know,
it was a little bit warmer, so maybe people felt
more comfortable. But yeah, 33,000
in a rain-soaked CVP
is pretty damn good.
Yeah, I mean, especially
like, I spend too much time on Twitter.
You see everyone getting so negative and everything,
but it's good to be back in the real world
and see that people are coming out.
They're excited. They're loving it.
You see all the hitters out there, and that's cool,
but I've got to say the thing that made me the happiest tonight
is you see Ranger out there just dealing,
just throwing strikes, getting out.
Even past that, you see someone like Junior,
you see Marte out there just three, you know,
just throw three Ks like that.
Oh, I got to tell you, I was jumping up and down,
just watching the bullpen, watching Junior just deal like that.
That's just awesome to see.
And I just got to say I love it.
It was a great night at the park
and it just couldn't make me happier.
Yeah, I appreciate the call, Connor. It was a
good night. It was a good night down at the ballpark.
Junior, again, he's on that
kind of Hoffman track where Hoffman
came out of nowhere last year
and developed into one of their
best options out of the bullpen.
One of their best options out of the bullpen.
It feels like Marte's kind of on that track right now.
I don't want to get too ahead of myself because I feel like I do this all the time with pitchers with stuff.
I get so ahead of myself and I get so excited.
But so far, so good.
He hasn't allowed a run yet.
He looks comfortable.
He's throwing strikes.
He's just barreling in on guys, on righties specifically.
It's a really, really fun watch.
on righties specifically, it's a really, really fun watch.
And, you know, even Nick Nelson, who is like the long man,
obviously the ninth inning wasn't great, but like even he flashed something.
The bullpen is really, really good.
And I think you can pretty confidently say on paper it's the best bullpen they've had since 2008.
And we know how good that bullpen was.
And they certainly, certainly have the stuff to compete at a high level.
Speaking of the bullpen, some reinforcements could be on the way.

Some big developments down in Clearwater tonight.
First, Tyjuan Walker.
Get excited.
Get excited.
Hashtag, take your time, Tyjuan, per usual.
Just slow down.
We got Turnbull.
Let Turnbull cook.
Four innings pitched for Tyjuan tonight.
Two hits.
Two earned runs.
Four strikeouts, no walks.
Don't love the two earned in single A,
but his fastball touched 92. So big, big stuff. It averaged 91 miles an hour. Now the bigger and
better takeaway is Orion Kirkering, who struck out the side on 11 pitches. I mean, it's so frustrating that that Diamondbacks series happened.
And hey, maybe if he never came up to the big leagues last year,
there wouldn't be this, ah, who knows how good a Ryan Kirkering could be.
If he never came up to the big leagues, didn't do the five levels in a year,
I think there'd be a lot of a Ryan Kirkering buzz.
I'm just telling you, I think the guys got in a year. I think there'd be a lot of a Ryan Kirk ring buzz. I'm just telling you,
I think the guy's got really insane stuff.
And I think the sweeper,
it grades out like if anyone is into,
now this might break WIP.
I don't want to shut down the servers.
But if anyone's into stuff plus,
Danny Ryan, are you a stuff plus guy?
A little bit,
a little bit.
Okay.
I have a feeling not as much as you are, but if you're into stuff plus and you're into these advanced metrics on
pitches,
the sweep,
the sweeper he has grades out as like one of the top five pitchers in
baseball.
Like it's,
it's,
it's a really good pitch.
And the nice part,
I was able to catch some,
some film of Orion Kirk green tonight.
It wasn't just...
He's finally got two fastballs now.
Last year, I thought guys were just sitting
on his slider, and if you watch the games,
it bore out. He threw
85% sliders, it felt like.
It's a really good pitch, but
when you throw it over and over again,
eventually big leaguers are going to catch up to it.
Tonight, it seems like he's throwing
two different variations of his fastball.
So he's got the 1-4 seam that he can get up 98-99 and blow by guys.
But then he's got this little sinker or little two-seamer sinker kind of action to it.
And it's just such a game changer if he has that.
It doesn't need to be 98.
96 with that.
98 with the four-seamer.
Bang, sweeper on top of that i would not be
surprised if by june he kind of takes the closer role and runs with it i think i think he has the
mentality i know the diamondback series happened but that's a big spot for a young kid so i think
orion kirkering's coming i am excited for him. They said he could
be activated this weekend. And you look at the righty options out of the bullpen now with
Kirkering looking how good he looks coming through the minor leagues again. Hoffman, pretty established.
Nice to see him get a save yesterday. I think he could close games if needed. And it really, I mean,
it's worked out well the last couple days
where Alvarado faces the top
and then faces the more important portion of the lineup
and then Hoffman can take the less important, whatever.
It gives him flexibility. It's fine.
So you have Hoffman, Sir Anthony,
hopefully work his way back into being one of your better options out there.
Marte, given what he's doing, really good.
And then you're adding Kirkering to the mix.
So you have those four with the stuff they have,
combined with Strom, Soto, and Alvarado.
I mean, that's pretty ridiculous.
It's pretty ridiculous how good this Phillies bullpen could be on paper.
And there's more guys in AAA.
Like, Griff's had a good start to the season.
Michael Mercado is a guy who, in spring training, popped.
Like, this bullpen has been so dreck and awful for so long,
it feels like they finally are starting to build a just souped-up,
stuffed bullpen.
And it's exciting.
So Kirkering dominant tonight down in single A.
Taiwan, I guess fine.
2-1-5-5-5-new.
2-1-5-5-9-2.
94-94.
It is the final out.
On the other side, we'll get to the play of the game.
A look ahead to tomorrow and a whole lot more here on the final out
on Sports Radio 94 WIP.
Marshy, what a player.
What a start to the year for Brandon Marsh.
That is our play of the game sponsored by Mike's Amazing,
the official mayo and mustard of the Phillies.
Welcome on back. It is the final
out sponsored by Regency Furniture. Affordable never looked so good. I talked a lot last year
and I forget what the number ended up as. So this is totally bad hosting on my part. And I know it's
not like rocket science to say that if you hit three home runs in a game, you're more likely to win, obviously.
But I think they only lost like six games last year where they had three or more home runs.
So it's kind of that sweet spot for this team.
And they hit three more tonight.
Obviously, they're now 2-0 because Bryce hit three in the other one.
So big analytics being done on the final out.
That's what we do.
Just a pro.
Stuff plus and figuring out their Phillies record when they hit three or more home runs.
It is nice.
They are over 500.
So they are officially off to a hot start.
This qualifies as a hot start.
They're not traditionally a team that gets off to a hot start,
like even back in the heyday.
But for this current iteration of the team,
they are scorching to start the year.
Brian is in Churchville.
What's happening, Brian?
I love it, Jack.
So, yeah, I can't say I totally disagree with all of Howard's opinions about the Phils,
but to hear Topper own them tonight was just absolutely beautiful.
It was beautiful. Just beautiful.
It really was. It really was. Oh, my gosh.
Yeah, and they went out and immediately responded. It was perfect.
Howard Eskin saved the season, and that's why he's my Insider of the Year.
That works for me absolutely absolutely
so you know we've kind of talked about a little bit um pitching you know i love good pitching and
our pitching starting and the bullpen you were talking about the bullpen even the starting
pitching has just been and tonight was an awesome win maybe the best one of the year i would say so
far and the offense is what it is and it'll'll come around. But, man, the pitching is just, there's just so much reason to be excited.
It's so many great arms.
Yeah, well, and it's why I kind of felt the way I did on the afternoon show
today, where it's like we're so obsessed with the offense.
And, yeah, it's annoying.
But when you look at what the starting staff's doing,
and you look at what the bullpen's doing,
But when you look at what the starting staff is doing and you look at what the bullpen is doing,
you can't tell me that Schwarber, Turner, Harper, Boehm, Castellanos, Stott are just going to stay this kind of cold all year.
They're going to figure it out. The good part is when they figure it out, look at all of those arms they have to where they could go on a really, really long run
if the offense just does their job.
And it's going to be an exciting summer once the weather heats up
and they get locked into the new approach.
Agreed.
And this team, as we said, they're built on slugging, blah, blah, blah,
on offense to a point.
But you look at it, and the pitching is really what gets you more excited in the end.
And to your point, you know, Kirk Herring, who showed such flashes of greatness last year,
I mean, you know, and then Jeff Hoffman has just been unbelievable.
And, you know, they're going to hit.
I mean, look, I think the lineup does have some flaws,
you know, to be fair.
Sure.
But, I mean, Brandon Marsh has just been unbelievable.
It's crazy.
He's having a great season, obviously.
Yeah, and I appreciate the call, Brian.
He's been a revelation.
And it's very rare in sports, it seems like,
where a trade just works out for both sides.
I mean, Logan Ohapi has been really good for the Angels.
And Marsh has been a part of a team that went through the World Series
and was within one game of the World Series last year.
And he's just been, he seems older, but he's, what, 25?
So, I mean, that trade worked out for both sides.
And it's actually crazy.
You know, both of the players, they traded away that deadline.
And Ben Brown is pretty sick for the Cubs.
And I guess if the Phillies starting staff wasn't so good
or even the bullpen was so good, I think it would be like,
damn, how did we let that go?
But he's had a good little run.
And Logan Ohapi is also just developing into a really,
really good player for the Angels.
Tomorrow, the 20th year anniversary of Citizens Bank Park.
Randy Wolfe throwing out the first pitch, April 12, 2004.
Danny Ryan, producing the program tonight, was two years old.
So, you know, you don't even remember the opening of the bank, which is very sad, Danny Ryan, very sad.
Yeah, unfortunately I do not, but I'll tell you what.
I did have a Wolf mask, a Randy Wolf mask my dad held on for me.
Nice.
I mean, it was beat up by the time I got it, don't get me wrong.
It was plastic, but I had it.
Nice, that's good work, that's good work.
So Randy Wolf throwing out the first pitch.
Should be a joyous festivity down at the ballpark tomorrow.
Bailey Falter.
Ah, an old friend.
Old Bailey.
Now, he went six innings of no hit ball against the
mighty Baltimore Orioles last weekend.
So, maybe he's figuring something
out. Maybe he's on the Pavetta track, by the way.
RIP Pavetta breakout
season. Might be hurt. But it's okay.
He was flashing
a lot before that. So, Bailey
Falter. Also a good trivia question
for all the Phillies nerds out
there who started Game 4 of the 2022
NLCS.
That would be Bailey Falter.
He only made it an inning. Or
maybe not even an inning. But regardless,
Bailey Falter started the game and it didn't go well.
In what was probably the most underrated fun game of that whole run,
Game 4 of the NLCS.
Just back and forth, big moments, big Reese moments, big Harper double.
This is my bleeping team?
Bleeping house. This is my bleeping house.
So, got to reminisce about Game 4 too much in Game 13 of the baseball season this year.
But regardless, Bailey Falter on the mound versus Chris Sanchez.
And again, Chris Sanchez had a really, really solid start to the year,
continuing to build off what we saw last year.
And we can't let Bailey Falter come in here and get a win.
So a must-win tomorrow night in the 20th anniversary of the opening of Citizens Bank Park.
For Danny Ryan, producing behind the glass, another great final out.
And coming up next, Rob Cherry.
He will take you through the rest of the night.
Tomorrow, we will actually have Randy Wolfe on the program with me and Ike.
And we'll have leading off for you as well.
So until then, we'll talk to you.
Enjoy Rob Cherry.
And have a good rest of your night here on Sports Radio 94 WIP.
