It is the final out.
As always, sponsored by the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
Jack for it's hanging out with you on this Tuesday.
night had to change up the loss song because it is now seven straight seven straight losses first
time since 2019 Gabe Kapler it's been a long long time since we've gone through this now
this team much different than well that team was you know they had you know this first year of
harper and and uh sigora and mccutcheon and those guys so they still had some talent it wasn't
you know, the worst.
I don't think it was this payroll,
but nevertheless,
it all sucks.
I do think I can count on one hand.
I was trying to piece through it in my head.
He had a walk off against the Giants in 23.
He hit a home run off of Jose Ruiz in 23.
Just trying to really count the times
that Trey has come through in a big spot.
And I think I can count on one hand.
I think I can count on one hand.
just a

94 94 is how you get in
as we kind of are just
going through another one of these
therapy session, talk your way through it, get it off your chest.
I mean, we're all kind of just piecemeal this thing together.
I am coming on.
It's usually just raw emotion, frustration.
Apathy hasn't totally set in yet because I do sit down every night and I do expect
like one of these nights they're going to figure it out, right?
One of these nights, it's going to click.
even though in my head, in my head,
I think I've come to the conclusion.
They're not good enough.
Even if they win a ballgame,
they just are,
and I feel like I've said they're so deficient a million times
in the last,
I mean, it really since the start of the year,
but they're just so deficient offensively.
It's hard for them to,
it's hard for me to believe that like any kind of run is coming.
I mean, Harper and Schwerber both have OPSs over 900 now,
and it feels like if they don't do anything,
there's a 0% chance they're going to score.
Maybe next time Bryce has asked about something.
He can wonder if the GM and the president of baseball operations,
if he's elite.
Maybe that's where this whole thing is trending.
It'd be a nice little cherry on top for what has been a,
I mean, about as bad of a start of the season as you could ask for
coming off of last year, how it ended, the offseason,
running it back, and everything else.
8 at 8, 7294-94 is how you get in.
The biggest takeaway is the game brought to by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury
law firm. It's April 21st. April 21st, and we are sitting here, are they 8 and 15 now,
lost 7 straight, can't even make fun of the Mets, who lost their 12th straight to the twins
earlier, so it's excruciating. It's excruciating.
My biggest takeaway tonight is, this is on the pitching staff.
And the pitching staff has been largely let off the hook because I think we believe in these guys.
I think that we believe in Caleb, and I believe that he will get these guys on the right track.
But tonight was unacceptable.
Ten walks by this pitching staff.
Another starter can't give them six innings.
I kind of went back and looked at it real quick.
Sanchez is the only one that has given them six innings since that Painter.
I'll give them like a break here because Painter gave him five and Pop gave him seven or gave him two,
so that was seven.
Besides that, it's been two Sanchez starts that's gone, that they've had a starter pitch
or make it six innings.
That's crazy.
For where the starting staff should be, that's unacceptable.
So Lazzardo again, first two innings looked fine, command was fine,
and then the command just falls off a cliff.
The change-up is up a little bit, or he yanks it, and then it misses.
It's not a super effective pitch right now.
Like, he just makes so many uncompetitive pitches.
I mean, there was a time in the middle of the game where he was missing,
Gloveside over and over and over again. They weren't like huge misses, but it was
difference between having command and being able to throw strikes. Command is being able to control
a strike zone. And he was much, much, much better at it last year. This year he just hasn't been.
This year has been much more erratic, much more all over the place, can't get into a rhythm,
fighting himself. And I wonder if maybe some of the adjustments he made to his change up in the offseason,
ended up hurting his other pitches, I don't know.
But when he is doing what he did tonight and pitching his way into trouble because it's not being super efficient,
I mean, I've said that Trey swinging first pitch is the most miserable experience in Philly's sports right now.
Nola, when he's nibbling, also an excruciating experience.
The Phillies offense in general, an excruciating experience wouldn't recommend it.
but when Hazer Czardo is pitching like that,
and he's walking the ballpark,
and he's falling behind every hitter,
and he's missing spots,
oh, it's infuriate.
I mean, on top of everything else that we're dealing with right now
as Phillies fans,
watching this pitching staff consistently not get the job done,
night in, night out,
is a decent little cherry on top
for what has been an excurs.
grudicating start of the year, but once again, another starter can't give them six innings.
What was Kirkering doing in the first of bat against Anzi Swanson?
You have, they thought, I guess, that Matt Shaw was going to bat there instead of
Belsteros, where they've been doing that with the DH spot or whatever.
Like, they've done that in both series.
They've taken guys in and out of line us.
They've been super, super aggressive early in games going for some match of advantages.
And you pitch around Danzy Swanson, who's hitting like 188 because you think you're facing Matt Shaw,
and you end up with Balseros and you walk him.
What are you being so cute for?
What are you trying to be – it's Dancy Swanson.
It's not like you're facing a four-hole hitter.
You're not facing a top of the lineup guy.
He's betting ninth for you.
So, or betting eighth tonight.
So that pissed me off.
And that was another walk.
Banks can't do a job.
He hasn't been as good as he was last year.
There was, because of course there had to be, another two-run single that just was blooped over Trey Turner's head.
Or it's either, it's either Trey or Mundo, every single time.
back-breaking, stupid little bleeder that falls in.
Again, Banks didn't do his job, but at some point, these nonsense hits have to stop.
And then Mesa just gets blasted.
Alvarado has to leave in the middle of an outing with back spasms.
So we'll monitor that one.
I think his last pitch was at like 94.
So it wasn't going very well before that.
the whole pitching staff is becoming more and more of a concern.
Oh, my goodness.
Ten walks tonight.
Ten walks.
And I guess credit to the offense for having some moments.
But once again, it's really just Schwerber and Harper.
Schwerver ties it up.
And then Harp goes yard, unfortunately, to make it 6'3.
But still, it was nice to make it a little bit closer.
and if the $300 million shortstop could help extend a ballgame late, that'd be great.
The leadoff hitters hitting 234, by the way.
234.
Then you watch Nico Horner, who's hitting 324.
And you look around baseball and you have these like difference makers at the top of the lineup.
And we got slappy McGee up there with the little bat twirl and the no plan when he goes up there
and swinging at the first pitch.
It's a 59 footer.
And soft contact after soft contact.
but they're soft contact.
I mean, it just reeks.
It just reeks.
888, 729-94-94.
Let's lead it off with my guy, Dave in Maryland.
Dave, what's up, pal?
Just baffled, and I'm sick of Trey Turner hitting lead off.
Like, he is, like, he's hurting.
I mean, you start every game with, you start every game,
and, like, he comes up in big spots all the time when the lineups turn it over,
and he just, there's nothing.
There's nothing in the bat right now.
And I know that, you know, who else are you going to put there, right?
But like, either Swarber or Harper needs to hit lead-offs.
And you get them more at bats.
And, you know, at least you have a chance to start the first inning with a punch
because he is giving you nothing.
Yeah, well, Dave, it's not even the first inning.
I mean, how many times he come up in the last nine games with a spot late in a game
where you need them?
I mean, every rally they have is with two outs.
I mean, it would kill them literally to have runners on first and third with one out or less.
Everything's with two outs.
But it feels like there's been so many spots late in games, eighth and ninth inning where it's just tray up there.
And it's like, oh, my gosh, can we put Schwerber or Harper there?
Harper will never do it.
Can we put Schwerber there?
So at least there's some kind of thump.
Yeah.
And then, you know, at what point do we start talking about playing right?
Reyes more in left field and Marsh and right field and sitting Garcia because he's not doing a job.
And, you know, at least Reyes is putting the bat on the ball, the barrel on the ball and hitting the ball hard every time.
It's just, it's so frustrating watching this team play offense.
And then tonight, you know, you couple that with the pitching, which has been, I think it's pretty bad the entire season.
And it's just, it's baffling how bad they are.
But Rob Thompson, you know, you say what's he going to do?
We'll make a change to the lineup.
Make something like drastic, like putting Chwerver back in the lead off hole and seeing if that gets a team going.
That's obviously what's worked before.
You got to try something new.
You do, Dave.
And I appreciate the phone call as always.
There's been too many times late in games this year where it's tray up there.
a big spot and he just hasn't come through. And when you can just go, the speed thing is nice
when he's stealing bases. He's not stealing bases. So what's the point? What's the point?
There's no point. Bat him third. Go go Schwerber Harper Turner. And if Harper doesn't want
at bat second, I don't care. Like put him there. Put him there. Make him pout. I don't care.
It's so dumb.
It's so dumb that he doesn't bat second.
Everything about this team is dumb right now.
Everything about him is dumb.
And none of them hit the ball hard besides, well, I want to talk about Felix Reyes because that is exciting.
But it's just nothing.
It's just nothing.
Mike's in Westchester.
What's happening, Mike?
Chris, we've sat through a lot of brutal seasons.
The Kapler years, the COVID year, watching Brandon Workman try to close games.
This is the least enjoyable 23 games of baseball.
I can remember the Phillies have played in my entire life.
It is stunning how just dead it all is.
And it almost be easier, I feel like, if they were making a fundamental mistake
or it looked like they weren't trying.
But I don't even think it's an effort thing.
I just think they might not be good enough.
They might just not be good enough.
Yeah.
Yeah, and that's what I think.
I think they're trying.
I don't think it's a lack of effort.
I think they just, it's like, I don't know, it's almost like watching a basketball game
when you can see them like giving a lot of effort, but the other team just has like a million
threes waiting to rain down on them.
I don't know.
It's like, I think they're putting forth effort.
I just don't think they're good enough.
I just don't think they're good enough.
And that's an unbelievably annoying spot to be sitting in with like a top five payroll on all the sport on April 21st.
but it's just there's waves of these other teams.
And maybe if they go through a stretch where they play some bad teams,
they can find it for a little bit.
My goodness, against good teams, they look,
I cannot believe how far behind they look behind teams like the Cubs and Braves
where we went into the season not thinking that to be the case.
That's been one of the things that has really just jumped out to me so far this year, Mike.
It's absolutely shocking.
I totally agree.
And to be honest with you,
If you're Bright Harper now and just going on a macro scale of what is wrong with the team right now,
you look at the teams, like you said, like the Cubs and the Braves,
if you're Bryce Harper and you're showing up to the ballpark today,
and your GM publicly stated he doesn't think you're good enough anymore,
and you're playing very well for the last two and a half weeks,
and you show up in the lineup a rookie making its second start in the big league is batting behind you,
you're probably like, you know what?
What more do you want for you?
me. I'm showing up. I'm hitting home runs. I'm trying to put the team on my back.
And nothing against Felix Reyes, who has been exciting, like you said. But how did we get
here? How does Felix Reyes batting fourth on April 23rd? It's unbelievable. And it comes back
to Dombrowski, in my opinion. Yeah. Well, Mike, I appreciate the phone call. I mean,
he's the one that is going to start catching more and more heat. And he should. The roster's
not good enough. And again, you can fire Rob Thompson a million times over. Is that going to
make a Doli-S-Carcia turn into a 700 OPS guy?
Is that going to make J-T-Ril-Muto turn back the clock?
Is it going to turn Alec Bohm into a 275 hitter?
Is it going to turn Stott into a 275 hitter?
I don't think that to be the case.
Now, maybe you just do it just to do it, and I understand that,
and maybe it could spark it, and you do it early, so you can realize that the team's
not right, and deadline time becomes easier because you know the players aren't good enough,
and ultimately how much effect does a manager really have
and hey, maybe they get someone in there like a buck show alter
or a Bruce Bochy
and there's a different level of respect
because of their standing within the game
that maybe the players
tighten up a little bit.
Okay, I can hear it.
I'll take almost any opinion, honestly, to fix the team
because everything feels like it's on the table.
It's been that bad.
on the other side we'll get to more your phone calls of course uh we'll get to the player of the game
and one positive note from tonight besides you know it's good to see the big the big fellas go
or have two home runs but there was a positive tonight that i definitely want to see more up going
forward it's jack for it's here on the final out on sports radio 94 wipa

Welcome back.
It is the final out.
Jack Fritz hanging out with you.
Final out as always, sponsored by the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
8-8-8-729-94 is how you get in.
The player of the game tonight is brought to you by South Jersey Gas.
Make the Smart Play Save Energy and Money with South Jersey Gas at SJG SaveEnergy.com.
And I'll get it to Imanaga again, seven innings of one-run ball.
Now, big improvement.
They only struck out once.
So they did not generate 26 swings and misses, but still, it was really a whole bunch of nothing.
And you just go up and down the lineup.
And, you know, BOM is down to an OPS of 384.
384.
Now, the one, like, kind of bright spot, and I would love to know how long it lasts.
I mean, Felix Reyes smoked the ball
every time he was up there tonight.
It was a lot of hacking, a lot of first pitch swinging,
and I'm sure as the book gets out on him more and more,
he'll start getting breaking ball to death on O-O-O-counts
until he makes an adjustment back.
But I tell you what, it was nice to see a guy actually hit the ball hard.
That was a welcome site.
Because everywhere else,
from the lead-off hitter to the five-hole hitter
to the six-hole hitter to the seven-hole hitter.
Marsh usually does a pretty good job of hitting the ball hard.
So, you know, okay.
Emudososa was in there tonight.
Did nothing.
Bryce's dot never hits the ball hard.
So it was refreshing to see one player be able to square baseball up
and look like they were going to threaten.
Look that they're going to be a little dangerous at the plate.
Oh, my goodness.
What a welcome sight.
Felix Reyes.
Stick them in there.
or left field, who cares?
And, you know, Dave brought up an interesting point there.
If Adoles continues to struggle and you need a bat in the lineup that can do some damage,
I mean, Martian, right, Crawford and Center, Reyes and left, let's ride?
I don't know.
I would like to see Reyes versus some righties first, but they don't really have a choice.
Now, I know they gave Adoles one year 10 million.
I'm sure they gave them a promise, like, hey, we'll play you a lot,
and hopefully this could lead you to another contract.
He did make a swing adjustment tonight, so watch out pitchers.
What's so disappointing about Adolese is like the feeling's so good,
it's so refreshing, and watching a guy with a hose out there is awesome.
But, man, he gets, he's such an easy guy to pitch to,
because it looks like you can just bust him in with a fastball over and over again,
and he'll never just turn on it.
And what's disappointing about where we're at with him is, at least early in the season when he was making out, it was a lot of loud contact.
It's gone away.
I mean, he's not making any loud contact.
So, I mean, they'll stick them up there because no one else is really jumping up and taking that four spot.
Maybe it can be Reyes, at least against lefties.
I don't think we're at the point where he's playing against righties.
I don't think just hitting the ball hard is enough to get in there.
but I don't know.
I wish I knew what the answer is.
I wish I knew what the answer was.
I mean, I would start by putting Schwerber back at leadoff,
which has been too many times where Trey comes up in a big spot,
and he's just not a dangerous hitter right now.
And, I mean, you could argue he hasn't really been a dangerous hitter.
It's been a lot of singles and infield hits.
I know we've thrown the idea of Crawford out there just because he can work good at bat,
but seemingly there's not going to let him play
against left-handed starters for whatever reason.
I don't particularly care.
Marsh, we had two hits tonight.
I want to see Justin Crawford do it.
He's supposed to be a long-term answer at center field,
and there's really no need to not have them out there.
But nevertheless, Will is in South Philly.
What's happening, Will?
Jack, man, here we are again.
You know, for a team that's supposed to have good starting pitching,
these guys can't get through six innings.
They can't get through five tonight.
night. I mean, this is just
taxing the bullpen. Duran is
out. You got 10 games in 10 days.
This is like shaping up to be
this road trip from hell. It's a
perfect storm of just
horrible, horrible.
I mean, 10 walks, gosh.
I'm getting ahead of myself
though, Jack. You know, I thought
for some reason, tonight, I kind
of leave tonight feeling better
than I did last night. There was some positive,
like you said, Ray. It seems to be
smoking the ball. I thought they played some
The defense tonight, I don't know.
Maybe I'm just delusional after watching this team lose seven straight that my bar has been lowered.
But I, you know, I think tonight was a step in the right direction.
They showed some fight, right?
Boom had a sack fly late, puts them back in it.
The tying run did come up.
Of course, you have your lead off man doing nothing, which we talked about.
I mean, look, they scored in more than one inning.
We got that going for tonight.
Pop some champagne, huh?
I mean, what a moment that was.
Right.
I mean, we should not be celebrating another loss.
But listen, like, looking at this team and the way it's constructed,
I think Maddingly's got to take over, and I'm not talking about Don.
Yeah, yeah.
Ready to pull the plug on Dave and get Preston there.
I'd be on board.
I'd be on board.
I appreciate the phone call, Will.
I really do.
I can't believe we're there already.
with the Dave and Topper conversations,
but, I mean,
Dave's done a great job of spending the owner's money.
And, you know, you look at the roster right now.
They're paying $38 million to Cassianos and Taiwan.
You had another $10 million to Adolias on there,
but whatever, it was a cheap, buy-low.
At least he had great defense and maybe the bad comes back.
You gave, you know, five years,
a hundred or sorry seven years 172 million dollars to aaron nola awesome uh i still think i think the
lizardo contracts are going to be fine but as it stands right now five years 135 million for
hazis lazardo uh you gave trey turner 10 years 300 million uh you you did double down on kyle schwarber
you gave him five more years which again fine with like i'm glad the college warber is here
even if it's not going well right now.
J.T., they gave three years to, and I don't know,
I was worried that he grabbed his back again in the ninth,
and I didn't love to see that.
And the catching situation behind him is certainly pretty dire.
He is brought back Bohm and Stott and Marsh for another year.
It hasn't really changed the chemistry up on offense,
and now you're watching a team that does look like it's stale and going through the motions.
I thought, again, I thought tonight they tried.
I don't think they're just not trying.
I think that it looks like they're not trying when things aren't going well.
You know, Harper made a really good defensive play.
Marsh made a really good defensive play.
But they have a bloated roster,
bloated contracts on this roster,
and they don't look like a good enough roster.
roster. And man, it's just going to be really fascinating to watch this team and see if they can
ride the ship, obviously. But if they don't, or they get back to close to 500, what the trade
deadline's going to be like. It's going to be fascinating. On the other side, last segment before
handing things off to TK. I know I'm doing another Phillies post-game show after a depressing
Phillies loss while one of our teams did something great tonight. So don't you worry.
we will get to some fun Sixers conversation.
What a crazy concept coming up in just a bit.
But one last segment of the final out coming up next here on Sports Radio 94 WIPA.
And that is why.
That is our wow moment of the game.

Yes, they scored in multiple innings tonight.
Yes, they did it.
Oh, amazing.
was nice see Harper go yard off of a lefty.
I don't care what the score was.
We're all about the Harper counting stats this year for narratives
and just letting him get back on his BS
and maybe he won't do it.
It would be nice if he questioned the
whether or not Dave Dumbrosky can come back to being an elite GM.
I think that'd be a nice cherry on top
for what has been a just a cluster of a start to the season.
for the baseball team.
It is the final out,
sponsored by the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
It is Jack Fritz hanging out with you as, man, what are we?
20, I mean, 23 games into the season.
And given how this is going,
it feels like it's going to be a lot of these kind of final outs.
I tell you what, I don't like it.
I would like them to string a few to Gettler and let us have some fun.
But my goodness, it's actually hard to envision them winning a baseball game.
In my head, I know they're going to win another baseball game.
But trying to picture them actually doing it at this point feels really tough.
It's almost like everything would have to go their way.
Schwerber and Harper might have to hit two each.
pitcher might have to go
7-8 shuddy
that
that's where we're at
us and Mets fans
really in the same spot
let's close it out and final out tonight
with Doug and Penn Sock
and what's happening Doug?
Hey Jack, how you doing?
Hey Jack, how are you doing?
What's up, Bough?
You mentioned apathy earlier in the show
and I'll tell you what, apathy
really set in for me with this team
when Johan Oas struck out,
bases loaded, game 7,
2002, and LCS.
And since then,
nothing was done to address that at all.
This team still has Ferrari price tag
but we're getting AMC Gremlin performance.
And the way this team is just constructed,
it's just not built for the long haul.
And when you have a team where guys can't,
you know,
when one guy can't pick out the other one slack,
it all snowballs like this.
And do you think after, what, three years of this?
They would learn and they never do.
They need some fresh people from the outside and bring them in.
But, again, they don't want to do that.
So it really falls on the front office for the way the team is this year.
Well, with the way the team's been, now, listen, if I wanted to play devil's advocate, right,
I would say, listen, they won 96 games last year.
They did match up.
The Dodgers beat them, but it wasn't like they got,
bludgeoned in that series. It wasn't good enough, but they were one of the best teams of
last year. It just didn't go their way in October, but I do think to the point of, and I appreciate
the phone call, Doug, I do think to the point of just keeping a lot of the same energy around and not
changing the chemistry up and continuing to double down on an older roster and a more expensive
roster. I think that's where the
Nebraska stuff really starts to
really starts to kick in. Now
tomorrow
is
an interesting plan
by the Phillies.
So
Kyle Backus is
going to start the game tomorrow
with
Tyler Walker pitching in
relief. So I guess he's going to be the
opener. What I find interesting
about that is
is they start usually when you do that well unless because i'm i'm watching the fillies of course
more than other teams but mostly you start a lefty because they have a good lefty hitter in the first
inning and you want to neutralize them well what are the philly's doing tomorrow i mean unless
they think that michael bush is going to bat second like nico horner leads the game off
Bregman hit second tonight.
Now I understand, again, lefty, maybe Michael Bush will go to the two spot because it'll eventually be a righty.
But I don't think the Cups have to do that.
So Horner, Bregman, half to switch hitter.
Suzuki is a right-handed hitter.
I don't know.
Seems like an odd decision.
I thought they brought up Alan Ron Hell to start the game and then go to Taiwan.
but it's you know that feels a bit of the rearranging the deck chairs and the Titanic so
Ron Hell opening for for sorry Kyle Backus opening for Taiwan tomorrow so we'll see how that
that plan works out and they're facing Matthew Boyd who I don't think is pitch very much
this year I think he's come back off of injury but had an unbelievable year last year so
he had a resurgent year was a good pitcher a couple years ago for the Tigers but really
rounded and figured it out last year.
So it's another lefty starter that the Phillies will have to face.
So that's exciting.
It means maybe to get Felix Reyes in there again.
And hey, maybe let's play the 22-year-old center field prospect that you're trying to
groom to be an everyday guy over the guy who has proven he cannot hit left-handed pitching.
But who cares.
That's going to do it for me on the final out tonight.
TK. is next.
He will get fired up about some Sixers basketball.
And I'm sure he can't wait to talk about.
Tobias Turner. That's coming on next here on the final out on sports radio or just on sports radio
