Jack Fritz hanging out with you here on this Monday night as we react to a just rollercoaster of a baseball game down at CBP. A thousandth win at the ballpark in a regular season win. So that's cool. Trey Turner hit his 200th home run in his major league career. He made his 200th error. I'm just kidding. And Harper hit his 200th home run as a Philly.

That's just baseball. And ever so fitting. the final baseball being a ground ball at Trey Turner is just about as baseball as baseball can be. It's why it's the best sport in the world. And then all of a sudden, Chase Sugar had happened. And it became tight, and you might have missed the Duran. light show. So if you're in traffic, would love to get your takeaways at 215-592-94-94. I mean, that's more rare than a no-hitter. I might be as rare as a perfect game.

Now, he still, technically, only had one error, which is ridiculous. He had at least three. I mean, Buzz, you are a scoring aficionado. If you were the official score down at CB tonight, how are you grading that Trey Turner performance? Well, at minimum, he's got to have two errors. And this is just modern day scoring. What a joke it is. I mean, these guys are big league players.

If it's a routine play that a majorly shortstop, should make, it's an error. Can we grow up with like Pa-Has getting an RBI single there? And you know what? The broadcasters don't make a big enough stink about it. They really don't. They never mentioned it at all. If they only brought it up more,

I think that this would really, there'd be a firestorm. So technically only one error for Trey Turner tonight. I would love to know how many games of baseball history would you have had a guy make three errors

and have three extra base hits with two of them being home runs. So you're going to finish the year with more home runs or errors? Well, is it 15 errors? And tonight he got to 14 home runs? It's close. Oh, this is the race everyone's talking about. It's just like the Schwerber more singles or home runs record from a couple years ago as well. First off, I think he has the yips in the field.

He clearly is overthinking every single ground ball. He doesn't know whether he should backhand it. Every single ball where he tries his charge. He has bad footwork on. He is just in between everything. But he is currently smoking the baseball. He is, I think he's closing his stance a little bit more. I feel like it was more pronounced over the weekend.

maybe that helps him stay closed so he can, you know, rather than flying open a little bit, it keeps him a little bit more, you know, coiled up. And maybe it helps him with chasing sweepers outside the zone. He did strike out on one tonight, so that puts a little fly in that ointment. But the way things are trending with Dre, this has to be it. You're not going to pull the plug mid-season. Believe me, I would love for them to pull the plug. midseason on the Trey shortstop thing, but they just don't have an alternative right now.

This has to be center field or left field next year. You can't do this. You can't do it. You can't have deficiencies at shortstop center field. Well, Bome's been fine. Metrics-wise, Stott has been bad, but I don't buy that. Harper has had a bad defensive year, although recently I felt like he is cooled off. He's been better out there.

But what a tray game. I don't think we'll forget that tray night for as long as we live. Four balls in the field that he should have made a play on, and then he's money at the plate. And the final ball in play goes right to him. And of course he makes the play, which is hilarious. And the fans there, much credit, gave out a really, really strong Bronx cheer. and I think there was a lot of laughs that are probably shared in the line at the end

just about the cheer and Trey's night and I'm sure he's being self-deprecating. But man, what a weird game. What a weird game. One where you never felt like too comfortable about, I thought you would have felt comfortable about it in the ninth, but it was not meant to be. And one where I really felt like they, met the moment for that game tonight. That met series was really disappointing.

Saturday was great, but the effort on Sunday, the effort on Thursday didn't feel like a team that was firing on all cylinders or was really into playing. Well, it looked like they went to the ballpark tonight with a mission. And I can appreciate that. I wanted this to be a show me series. I wanted this to be something that's not just your random late July kind of homestand. Like, I want them to send a message. They've been playing 500 baseball for a couple weeks now. It's time to kick it into gear. And for one night, obviously, we'll see how the rest of the series goes.

We know what usually happens when they score 10 runs in a game. It feels like they just don't score for the rest of the week. You've got to save some runs for the next game. Everyone knows that. and I but for tonight I felt like they

they rose up they met the moment I was impressed what the offense did you know the game got a little hairy there and then March it's that home run and it kind of loosens things up again

Trey hit another one and and you know Bryce put a nice little cherry on top with a home run and Derek Hill who continues to be a revelation even though it wasn't the biggest home run and that ball was absolutely smoked So, you know, up and down the lineup, they all went out, they all did their job.

Dodgers had to be lighten that bullpen. They played a double header yesterday. I mean, Emmett Sheehan still being out there in the sixth inning was crazy. So, you know, obviously you caught the Dodgers in a favorable spot and he took advantage of it. But I was really impressed with the offense tonight. And then obviously the Trey Turner night is truly, truly shocking. 215-592. 94-94 is how you get in. Let's kick it off on the phones and let's go to Steve, who is in Norristown. What's happening, Steve? Hey, Jack. How are we doing? You at the ball game tonight?

Yes, I was. And I never felt comfortable. I never felt comfortable literally until the ninth inning. and then in the ninth, I was actually a little sad and said it like Sugared, I would have liked to see the rookie from AA that they called up today. You had a six-run lead. I mean, why not try him? Well, my theory is that he's really up here for show, and I'm not sure he's actually going to pitch because I don't think they want him to pitch in the big leagues of AAA because they want to keep his ERA and numbers all inflated at

AA and not subject to the new baseballs. but yes, I agree with you. That was a stone gold McFarland should be in kind of situation and it's a real bummer. It didn't happen. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. But, um, Trey Turner, man, like, the thing that bothers me is

he's not taking, like, sometimes you need to take a step back on your, with yourself and be like, look, I'm not helping, okay? Like, put me in the outfield or put me at second base. Would it really be the worst thing in the world if we put Stott at short and him at second? So it wouldn't be as difficult for him?

You have somebody who can't play defense, who has more errors than home runs, and we have the least amount of turn double plays. I know that, Stap, because you told me that on the radio. And you can't play Malik Bone because he doesn't touch the ball on all of the double plays. Like, we have to do something about this. This is going to happen in the playoffs. You're putting the Mundo Sosa out in the outfield, and he hasn't played it before. Why can't we do this with Trey Turner?

We have to find a solution now, not next year. Yeah, Steve, I got you. And I appreciate the phone call. It's just not going to happen. Like, I don't know. They're not moving him off shortstop right now. And unfortunately, I know we'd love to do this thing where, you know, these guys have Steve I appreciate the phone call buzz you could hang up the phone thank you

alright but like there are egos involved there he's not going to come into Dom Adley's office and say you know I should go play second base or I should go play the outfield like it's these guys have pride he takes pride in his defense it's not working right now 100% and every time a ground balls hit to him, you are just covering your eyes and just praying that he makes the play. But it's something that is going to have to happen in the offseason. And they're going to try to give him every opportunity to work his way through it. Do I think he's going to work his way through it? Probably not.

I think that this is something that is starting to affect him mentally. It feels like every time the ground ball is hit his way, he is overthink. it overstepping, not knowing really what to do, because he probably has more of an instinct for playing the outfield. And I agree. Next year, I'm all for putting him in the outfield. This feels like we've reached the breaking point. The only thing that worries me about that is more running around out there. He's had some hamstring issues, so you subject him to more of that. But, yeah, I mean, it sucks. Every ground ball is to his way, you're kind of just closing your eyes and hoping things go well.

They're not going to do anything about it right now. And they're going to give them every opportunity to work his way through it. And at least, at least for one night, the bat made up for all the defensive miskees. So, man, what a ball game. 215.5.592.94 to get in on the other side. It's eight three fills. Yeah, I believe that was Trey Turner's hardest hit ball of the season. Two home runs tonight, a scorching double early. I just found out Uram didn't know. I mean, what is going on here? Wow, I tweeted out that Duran was 83 saves away from passing down. How long did that tweet stand until you took it down? Oh, about two minutes. I did the old Bart Simpson went in, edited it, took it out, and then put it right back up. Like nothing happened.

Yeah. So I always assumed. that if you're coming into a game that was three runs, you know, a typical safe situation, I always thought that that would count as a safe. But thankfully,

Buzz is here to hold everyone accountable and make sure that things are properly scored unlike the Trey Turner Knight in the field. Including the manager, too. We've got to hold everyone accountable here. Yes, yes. What if you were in that press conference, would you have stopped it?

I would have been like, actually, Don, if you knew anything. You're not going to either lying or you don't know the rule. And either way, I'm not going to let it slow. Excuse me, Don. Excuse me.

You said that you wanted to bring him in a safe situation. Actually, that wasn't. Maybe you should have allowed a runner to get on base before you pulled them in. Yeah. So I'm just being completely honest with you. The Donnie baseball bullpen decisions are really starting to give me some fear about October. Sugar got it out there. You let him get that out.

And then we're pulling. I guess your thought process there is Duran's already hot. We might as well use them. Pitching that long in the bullpen is probably going to take him out for tomorrow anyway. So let's get him in there. It's a bummer that they had to do that. But, you know, that one. And then he just, it feels like he's just in a bad rhythm of when to get starters out

versus leaving him in there. You know, Nola last Thursday. Sanchez tonight. I mean, it's one of those situations where do I want the guy who was a starter for the National League All-Star team in the All-Star game facing Alex Call or Orion Kirkering facing Max Muncie, who is just hitting again for the 10th straight year, it feels like he's been around forever. He looks like the least, he just doesn't look like a baseball player. and he just continues to have an unbelievable approach at the plate and hit 35 tanks a year. I'll ride with my horse on that one. I know he's at 99 pitches.

I get it, but I would have gone with Sanchey over there. And I, I, Kirkering with runners on base or inherited runners and coming into a dirty inning, that is a, that is a recipe for a disaster. And I give him credit for getting rushing out and that was good. But, man, it does feel like in tight moments he really, really tenses up. So, yeah, the Don Maddenly bullpen decisions, it's been something that has heard him in the past his past stops.

A lot of those fan bases complain about Don Maddenly's bullpen usage. and at least the last month, last month, I feel like we've seen a lot of little cracks with that. Now, again, it's not like he's got a staple of horses down there that he can just open up the bullpen door and bang, here's some stud coming out of the pen. He doesn't have that. But still, I just, there's been far too many times

we're sitting there at home thinking that doesn't feel right. And that does concern me going forward. Do you think Kirkring, by the way, was rooting for a ball not to come back to him with the bases loaded? Oh, I know. I know. I know. He stuck his hand out there. It was a good effort, but he was begging for it not to happen. And then some other things that kind of stuck out tonight, McFarlane not getting the ninth was annoying. I do have a theory that, like, he's here for show more than anything. I'll believe he gets into a game when I see it. They have been shielding him at AA all year. I don't know why they would all of a sudden deviate from the plan to bring him straight from double a to here.

So I still think that he is someone that they view as a trade candidate. I don't know what they think they're going to get from a 25-year-old reliever, but I want him to pitch. I want to see what he can do. I just don't believe that they think he can pitch at this level. So we'll see if he ever actually gets into a game before he gets, before he gets sent down. That Harper home run wasn't the most high leverage spot,

but it was good to see him go to the opposite way with authority when he gets in those modes with Ryan Howard back in the day. That's when he starts to get more in balance. I thought he'd been off balance. Really, his last like 15 games, and he was much more aligned there. So it's good to see that. It was good to see Marsh also hit a home run and just missed the second one as well.

Both of those guys had been scuffling for about 15. games and they obviously need them to get going if they're going to do any damage in October. Obviously it's only July. We don't need to think about October every single game, but given the nature of the last four years, it's hard not to do that. So good night all around offensively. Derek Hill with another home run, but the ball is certainly flying out the ballpark tonight and maybe the juice balls from the home run derby stayed and we're down to CPP tonight. Let's check in with Nick in. Princeton. What's up, Nick? Nick, not there. Nick?

I'm here. I'm here. What's up? How are you doing? Good man. How are you? You're going to get the show back on track? We're going to get the show back on track? So I think overall a lot of positives, right, with Sanchez and the offense. But I think the bigger story than the tray defense is the bullpen. because I'm just imagining instead of facing the eighth guy on the diver starting pitching death turret or facing Yamamoto and the 2-1 game, he comes out

in a 6th and we need four guys to be locked down, you know? Yeah. So I guess what I'm wondering is what do we need at the trade deadline bullpen wise? How many guys that we need? Well, Nick, I appreciate the phone call. Yeah, I mean, I think it's one of those things where it's going to be

Now, the thing that's interesting is that Alvarado is showing signs of life, you know, out there. He's at like three straight good outings. I still don't totally trust him, but at least he doesn't look like a total disaster. And they do need him. That's good that he didn't look like he was hurt. And then, yeah, I mean, the real factor here is, like, do they think Gage Wood can come up and be a part of this bullpen? He pitched last night in Redding. I thought he was unbelievable.

Two nights and are going. reading when you're listening to this. So my answer is I think they need two still, unless I think Gage Wood is coming up. But there's just so many things that they need from a right-hand option, left-hand option, another outfield bat and possibly a starting pitcher. Jim Salisbury reported today that they're looking for a back-end starter. And if they can't find one by Saturday, they might bring up this guy. named Brian Keller, who's pitching very, very well for the Iron Pigs.

It's a lot of holes they've got to fill in one deadline without, again, the most robust system in the world to where they might just have to take a risk and make a bet that Alvarado can be a guy so maybe they don't have to go get a lefty reliever, and they can just focus on going and finding the Brad Keller replacement. It's going to be really tricky, Nick. It's going to be really tricky, but my answer would be too. I do think that there is an Alvarado wild card where you just have to hope and pray that in a big game, he's going to be able to get the outs when needed.

besides like the first game of his career where he played center field. Maybe they had an idea there. misplay four balls four and it makes you like take j-roll for granted freddy galvis for granted you see this it's crazy now he makes up for it with what he does on the offensive side which is blast two home runs and have a double so yeah yeah you live with it but my goodness tray let's figure it out kid all right let's go back to the phone line to dr garrett and westchette's What's happening, Garrett? What's up, Jack?

What's up, man? Jack, can hear me? Yeah, I got you. Hey, I'll tell you what. In a team full of bits, the current Trey Turner bit might be amongst the best in recent memory. He's like a 10 to 15 handicapped golfer where if the driving's on, the irons are off. If the irons are on, the putting's off, it's just, it's never all there. but he's great to watch.

Yeah, I like that comp a lot because I don't think, unless you're on tour, you never just have all three things working. It's actually criminal. Like golf is truly the greatest form of torture, you know? Everyone says it's a relaxing hobby. It's not. It's four hours of just pure torture. And then he hit like three good shots where you're like, I figured it out.

But yeah, no, he is, he's a whirlwind. man because on one hand you're so thrilled with what he does with the plate and then you see what he does defensively and you don't want him out there playing there tomorrow it's like he plays so bad it's worthy of being benched buddies also smoking the baseball so they they don't have their choice and they're just got to cover their eyes every single time a ground ball is hit to the shortstop for the time be yeah and uh one other thing that is a little bit concerning like you mentioned is I'm a little worried about on's bullpen management. Sanchez, I feel like he's earned the right to face the eight and nine hitters in the fifth inning.

And I get it, he was out of pitch count, but I'd rather have Sanchez there than a Ryan Kirkering. And I was looking forward to hoping seeing McFarland in the ninth inning there. Kind of feels like if they were going to use them all, that would be the time to do it. Oh, yeah. And I appreciate the phone call, Garrett. Never doubt. Yeah, right on time, Buzz. Third time's a charm.

They, well, because Kirkring was the same thing when Kirkring first came up. He came up in a, I guess, six-run game, and he flashed, and everyone was excited at that point. And flashed, fast forward two and a half years later. It's funny, he's pitching to like a 2.3 ERA. And it's just, you never trust him with runners on. And he can always tell him when he's a little too afraid of the moment. So tomorrow, we go with Zach. Wheeler on the mound for the Phillies versus Justin Rebleski.

Wheeler might have a... Obviously, he's pitching with a bit of a chip on his shoulder because of what happened at the all-star game. Now he's facing the guy who they gave the spot to after he said no. So maybe there's even a little bit more juice. Obviously, it would be huge to win this series before the Nola game on Wednesday versus Sasaki. I don't care how questionable Sasaki has been this year. He will shove against the Phillies.

So winning that one tomorrow, Roblesky's been really good. So it's not like, you know, this is some kind of a pushover. But Wheeler versus Robleski and, you know, you feel like you're in a pretty good spot. At least they got one out of the way.

Offense showed up. Defense did not really. And Chase Sugar did not show up either. And by the way, tomorrow's a Merv phone call tonight. All kinds of rain in the forecast. Yeah, but I've seen a lot of 40 percenters. I don't know. I'm not seeing a lot.

of definitive here is like an 80% from 7 to 10. Now, I do have tickets for tomorrow night, so I really would like for it not to rain. But actually, if things go well tomorrow, you're getting a Fritz and Seltzer final out live from the ballpark. But if it's a rain... Wow, okay. If it's a rain...

I hope's night? Well, no, we're just... We just got tickets and we're hanging out for the game. But if it's... If it's a rain delay, I'm going to go with a 0% chance. One of us has to work the next day. But yeah, so looking forward to that. The series and fun.
