Starting point is 00:02:21 so you can stay in the game. Roto-Rooter, your MVP for plumbing solutions solutions. The biggest takeaways the game brought to you by Morgan & Morgan America's Large Injury Law Firm. So the first biggest takeaway of tonight and there's a lot to get into but the first big one is what Zach Wheeler did and his ERA in June is 0.58 not He, his scoreless streak is up to 20 after this one, after he had what, a 24 inning scoreless streak earlier this month. It's one of those, I mean, there was that run in what,
Starting point is 00:02:55 09 after Lee got here? I mean, Lee had a run in 09 and 11 where he had, you know, this kind of a month, but you know, what he's doing and what Sanchez is doing and what obviously Ranger is doing, Lizardo has kind of fallen off, but we see the dominance. This staff on a night-in-night-out basis is just special. The pitch count is brought to you by the Plumbers Union Local 690. Protecting the health of the nation, visit plumbers690.org.
Starting point is 00:03:20 107 pitches for Zach Wheeler and the Gull. Yeah, it would never be one to to Call out co-workers, but the gall of some people that work the WIP, you know what happened in June of Earlier this month we did top 11. There was multiple WIP personalities Didn't have Zach Wheeler in their top five Someone had him closer to eight, nine. Yeah, he is, I think he's starting to get the recognition that he deserves.
Starting point is 00:03:53 I think he's starting to, I think before 2022, he had the dominant 21 where it was like, he should have won Cy Young, and then he had the postseason run in 22 and we're like all right Zach Wheeler's really really good. But what he's been able to do with last regular season, another great postseason even though it was only one start and then so far this year, he's gone from underappreciated to possibly putting together a Hall of Fame resume. And it's one of the great signings in the history of the Phillies and really in Phillies sports
Starting point is 00:04:34 to get this guy from the Mets who always had top tier talent but could not put it together and to get this version of him to where he could be putting together a hall of fame candidacy? It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it's a bummer because I think Skeens is probably going to win National League Cy Young. He's been great. Last time out wasn't the best.
Starting point is 00:05:01 But regardless, it seems like Skeens has an inside track to win National League Cy Young, which very well could mean that Zach Wheeler is going to end second in the Cy Young voting for the third time as a Philly. It's brutal, but the guy just posts every time. He goes eight tonight and I thought tonight was the best curveball. He's had this entire year the funniest part about Wheeler or the most one of the most interesting parts about Wheeler is Rarely rarely are all of his pitches working, you know, his fastballs always dominant now when he can't command hisball, which is very rare, it's not gonna be his best night.
Starting point is 00:05:46 I think he usually grinds his way through it. But there's nights where his splitter's his second best pitch. There's nights where that sweeper is his second best pitch. And there's nights like tonight where that curve ball's his second best pitch. And he really just turns into a two-pitch guy and then has the four-seamer, two-seamer, sinker.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Like, he's just a real, real treat to watch. And it's all at 98. The one most encouraging part about Wheeler is that he can still gas you up at 98, which, you know, I thought he's settling into a 94 to 96 mile an hour pitcher. He's still got some juice left in that tank. 215.592.94.94. Some other other things some other takeaways from the night good base running, you know, it's very rare that we can say that about this team and Marsh and Scott in particular You know is a really exciting play stock coming around first base or coming around from second base
Starting point is 00:06:40 And that's where you see the baseball player in Bryson Scott And I just hopefully the bat can come together a little bit more here start walking more get closer to the guy that we had the end of the season because he is a really smart smart baseball player and Scoring on that play having the baseball instincts to to read that situation was impressive and that was a very baseball player move by Stott. And Marsh continues to play solid baseball. He's not lighting the world on fire, but he's doing a really good job
Starting point is 00:07:14 and I'm fine with him batting ninth. The thing I need, cause Stott's not gonna move back up to the top of the lineup. I mean, unless he gets like stupid hot, but with those guys at the bottom of the lineup I need them to be Nats I need them to be pesky. I need them to be tough outs I need them creating havoc on the base pass like that's That's the value in having talented guys like those two at the bottom of this lineup
Starting point is 00:07:43 So you saw a glimpse of it tonight, you know, Stott scores there, aggressive in the base pass. Marsh immediately steals a bag and to get in a scoring position and eventually scores on a tray in field single. But that is aggressive baseball. That is, you know is making something happen. That is taking it to an opponent, and they need to do more of that stuff
Starting point is 00:08:10 with those two guys specifically. So I thought from that standpoint, and just seeing what those guys can do at the bottom of the lineup, I thought that was impressive. And then the third and final big takeaway here is Bryce returned tonight. I thought he looked good You know, he hit the hit the long fly ball foul, but it did reach the second deck Which I know it's not a home run
Starting point is 00:08:35 But still he didn't look like he was laboring out there and that doubled or that the double play that he hit that was Smoked so I think at the standpoint of wanting to see was he gonna be a little hesitant to swing We didn't really see that from Bryce tonight. He looked Locked in ready to go his comments for the game were definitely concerning got cleaned up a little bit by Lachlan Marsh March at the end of the the pregame Thing there where he he says it's just good it's in a good spot it hasn't taken a step back so might as well get up get back out there rather than well it's not going to get any better i think overall we're all still pretty concerned about the wrist but at least
Starting point is 00:09:19 from the standpoint of tonight and i think it'd be interesting to see how he bounces back tomorrow but getting this thing right and getting the best version of Bryce available or you know Bryce possible would be huge so I thought Bryce looks good tonight but also you got to see how he bounces back tomorrow 255.92.94.94 to get in on the final out on the other side we'll get to the player of the game and some other positives from this one in on the final out on the other side we'll get to the player of the game and Some other positives from this one. It is the final out Jack Fritz hanging out with you on this Monday night. Of course, Zach Wheeler is our player of the game. Brought to you by South Jersey Gas Conserve,
Starting point is 00:10:32 helping customers and the community save energy and money. Visit southjerseygas.com slash conserve. Eight dominant innings from Zach Wheeler tonight. .580 ERA in June, and a 20 consecutive scoreless innings from Zach Wheeler tonight,.58 ERA in June and a 20 consecutive scoreless innings streak pitching at an unbelievable level, somehow getting better with age. And yes, I am incredibly fearful of the really being done after the age of 37 because with the way he's pitching, it certainly seems like he can pitch further.
Starting point is 00:11:05 All right, we'll get to some positives here in a little bit, but let's go back to the phones. Bill is in Downing Town. What's happening, Bill? Jack, I took you up on your offer. You said if you're leaving the game, give a call. So that's what I'm doing, man. Beautiful, how was tonight?
Starting point is 00:11:21 I tell you what, I don't know if we really appreciate, I don't know if we can appreciate, I don't know if we can appreciate what we're seeing with Zach Wheeler. I mean this is a 35 year old power pitcher. I'm sitting in my seat, it's the seventh inning, he's on like pitch 84, he's still throwing 97 mile per hour sinkers at 35 years old. And like you just said, he's getting better with age and that doesn't happen other than the Verlanders, the Scherzers who were power pitchers in their late 30s and early 40s.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I mean, that is so rare. I mean, I look back at all the free agent signings that we've made in the last 50 years. He's top four in my book. I mean, you've got Pete Rose, you've got Tommy, you've got Harper and you've got Wheeler and that's it. I mean, he is up there with the best free agent signings. And I mean, watching him every five days is a treat. It's an honor, it's a privilege,
Starting point is 00:12:17 whatever you want to call it. I mean, there's a lot of aces in baseball right now, Max Fried or DeGroms pitching well, or Stubble last night, trolled a gem for Detroit, if you call that. Skeens, obviously. Skeens. I don't know if there's anybody I'd rather give the ball to
Starting point is 00:12:35 in a big game than Wheeler, especially in the playoffs. I mean, plus he's one of the best playoff pitchers in baseball history. And he's ours. It's fantastic, man. I mean, he's just, he's great. Sorry, sorry if I'm stand-by.
Starting point is 00:12:52 No, no, I love it, man. I just, and what makes me so, man, I, obviously you wanna win a championship for the fans, but with him and Wheeler and these guys who've been here and knocked on the doorstep, it's so hard for me to sit here and we're heading into the trade deadline in a month and think, are we really not going to give this pitching staff and that guy
Starting point is 00:13:21 the best chance to go win a championship? And I'm a huge prospect guy. I love prospects. But man, they're right there. They're truly right there, Bill. Other than Painter, I think everyone, Miller included, is on the table for the right offer. Now, I don't know what right-handed power
Starting point is 00:13:40 bat is out there. That's the Browsky's job. But there's not a whole glut of guys who can pop in. Aaron Judge isn't on the market as far as I know. that when you've got a top three starting pitching staff in the majors and that that'll carry it in October you got to get into the tournament and then you got to get hot and we saw that in 22 we saw that in 2008 you just got to uh but yeah we've got to give this group the best chance to win because it would be a shame if they you know tasted it never got a chance that enjoy parade on broad street which is pretty fun
Starting point is 00:14:27 for sure bill bridge of the phone call and safe travels getting home and today andrew filiponi does afternoon radio out in pittsburgh put a report out about the phillies being interested in both david bednar and uh... dennis santana not Now Dennis Santana was fighting with Pirates fans a couple of weeks ago, and that's with like 10 Pirates fans in the stadium. So I don't know how that translates here.
Starting point is 00:14:51 He's had a great year, bit of a career year for him. He's pitched into a 1.5 ERA. Naturally, I'm fearful of that translating here. And Bednar is, man, he was so dominant for so long. He's had a shaky, I wanna say about a year and a half, but has really bounced back well and just has a big out vibe to him. So I'm surprised that they're going for two arms.
Starting point is 00:15:18 I thought they were kind of telegraphing that one of those or two of those starters are gonna go on the bullpen. So maybe they only need one arm out there but but still a Bat to me is Absolutely necessary and I really like Otto camp. I do I think he's a winning ballplayer. I think he'll be a winning ballplayer But the way that it seems like camp is being talked about reminds me so much of the Tyler Phillips thing last year where it's like, where you look back after the trade deadline
Starting point is 00:15:49 and when the starting staff completely fell apart and he fell apart and they admitted that he factored into their deadline plans. And again, Otto Kemp is not to me a star in the making. I think he's a versatile utility player that can be plug and play. I don't want them to make the mistake of that's our right-handed bet. That's our right-handed difference-making power-ish type bet. Because I think if you make that bet, you're most likely going to lose it. And you know, it's obviously this game
Starting point is 00:16:27 is about making bets. I just, I worry about that bet. I think he should be on the team. I think he should be, you know, a contributor on the team, but I don't want that being viewed as the big, big bet. And even Justin Crawford, that's a ton of pressure on a 22-year-old to come up and be, he's not the savior, but you get my point,
Starting point is 00:16:50 like being viewed as a difference maker. You can't bet on prospects to be difference makers. If they come up and are, that's great, but it feels like such a big risk with where this team is currently at, which is knocking on the doorstep of hopefully winning a title Dave's in Westchester what's happening Dave? Hey what's going on on the way home from the game? Nice man. Yeah it was a great game the weather held out it's raining now but it was beautiful down there
Starting point is 00:17:26 cannot believe how well we'll request continue to be amazed at how well he does game after game uh... i don't know if it translated to television exactly how dominant he was
Starting point is 00:17:43 but those guys had no chance. Nope. They had absolutely no chance He was overpowering Dave. I mean he was 98 which is good to see he had that I mean the breaking ball there. I mean, there's one swing I think by the Cronenworth where he just missed it by a foot and he isn't always that great command for for that curveball, but he sure did tonight and I mean it resulted in eight shutout innings against a pretty dang good offense always that great command for that curveball, but he sure did tonight and I mean it resulted in eight shutout innings against a pretty dang good offense. I mean I think they have one of the least amount of strikeouts in
Starting point is 00:18:13 amongst the team in baseball this year. Obviously Arise has seven on the year, but he was he was brilliant man. He's a magician yeah i know he he got jackson merrill on to straight edges he had no chance he just bailed out both times it was awesome down there the energy was electric it was a good time the one thing i don't know anyone talked about it yet but
Starting point is 00:18:42 the fact that the podres brought this guy up to throw knuckleballs to try and get a scam win on the road I just think it's egregious it's typical Padres move to try and bring a guy up I don't know if it was his first major league appearance but but it was the first game of the season. And he came up there throwing slop. And we didn't necessarily destroy it, but we got enough runs to win the game. With Wheeler, we didn't have to do much.
Starting point is 00:19:18 It was just a great game. It was an awesome game. Yeah, for sure, David. Appreciateid appreciate phone call get home safely yeah uh... waldron it i'd those things where i could ever throw a knuckleball but i have like no respect for knuckleballers you know he wasn't enough to make is a real picture so he turned to a knuckleballer
Starting point is 00:19:41 i guess maybe their thought process was he shoved against them last year and maybe, you know, lightning strikes twice. But thankfully I love the, this is classic Padres tactics. I didn't know he had those takes, but I appreciate a good baseball rant. But yeah, they did just enough tonight. Wasn't a dominant effort against him, but I've seen them do worse against soft tossers
Starting point is 00:20:09 or guys that throw junk up there, so we take that. Some good things tonight. Real muto, I thought, from the standpoint of actually driving the ball and being more of a line drive hitter and using the right side of the field, which is when he's at his best was good. We did not see a ground ball to the shortstop,
Starting point is 00:20:27 which is a huge step in the right direction. Kepler should have had a home run. I know all the Kepler stuff's going on. He drives me crazy too. Those comments were annoying. Thompson has back before the game. That was good. That's what a player's manager should do.
Starting point is 00:20:41 And to his credit, Kepler should have had a home run, but Jackson Merrill made one of the best catches of the year. It's not exactly Denzel Clark but it's pretty dang good so a great play by Jackson Merrill Rob Kepler and once again aggressive cast these strikes with a first pitch home run so again why would you throw him a strike? But one day maybe they will learn. On the other side, a lineup thoughts, a look ahead to tomorrow and all of your phone calls before handing things off to TK Tom Kelly coming up next on SportsRadio 94 WI Pay. Ah, it's just heads up baseball. Heads up baseball. You know, at least on the base pass,
Starting point is 00:21:22 he reminds me of Utley. I would like to see more of it from the offensive side. But either way, I think Bryson Stott is a smart baseball player. And I really hope that he can turn it around at the plate because I won him out there because I think he makes winning plays. And that was a winning play tonight. And like I said last night, I want those two to be gnats. I want those two to be pesky. I want those two to be pesky. I want them to be annoying at the bottom of the lineup.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Don't strike out. Put the ball in play. Use your wheels. And let's wreak some havoc at the bottom of the lineup. So it was good to see Stott and Marsh do their thing tonight. And it seems like at least for the time, at least for now, Marsh has taken that job and run with it. Rojas is really falling off a cliff offensively.
Starting point is 00:22:10 I don't think we're too surprised by that, but Marsh has a chance here to maybe take that job. Could even take left field. Kepler hasn't been great. Marsh is probably a better defensive left fielder than Kepler, even though Kepler is fine out there. But if he can bring up Crawford, and maybe he can play center field and go Marsh,
Starting point is 00:22:29 and Kapler can be a power bat off the bench, I'm sure he'll be thrilled with that. But either way, still, Marsh is playing good baseball. And that was some fun at the bottom of the lineup tonight. Now, I do have a lineup thought. And it's pretty simple, but boneheading clean up is not it. I had a nice cold shiver down my spine
Starting point is 00:22:53 when I saw the lineup and he was batting clean up again. And I don't know if it's Bryce's and one of bat two, but there's a nice thing going with Schwaber protecting Bryce in the lineup. And I And I know right now because Scott fell off a cliff offensively that he can't bat leadoff And Turner is up there doing a good job this is where the trade deadline comes in and Getting someone that can bat one or two My dream is a Jaren Duran or Byron Buxton
Starting point is 00:23:23 You know we slot one of those guys in either one or either first or second, and you have Trey and them at the top. Now we go. And then you can put Schwab behind Bryce. But I do not want BOM hitting cleanup again. We know how that story ends. We don't need to waste our time.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Let's get Schwab back behind Bryce as fast as possible. If it takes Bryce batting second, I don't care. I don't care. We don't need to do the bone batting cleanup thing again. He's not a cleanup hitter. He's a five through seven hitter in a good lineup. Knock it off. Mets were idle tonight.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Phil's now two games up in the division as the Mets are reeling. They've lost 13 of 16. And offensively, certainly look pretty brutal. Steve is in Washington, DC. What's happening, Steve? Chris, great job as always tonight. Nice professional win by the Fightants. I'm going to give you one, two, and three.
Starting point is 00:24:29 What you think is going to be highest probability of happening to the lowest. We release Kepler, we trade for a power closer, or we sign a power right-handed bat. One, two, and three. So you mean trade for a power bat? Go ahead, trade, go ahead, trade. I think highest probability is a high-end closer. And then I think it goes, well, cause there's not really a right-handed power bat.
Starting point is 00:25:03 You know, I think that there's some high-end bats, but they're more like complete players. I think at Kepler, if he doesn't turn around in the next, I mean, Whit Maryfield was released on July 12th. So that was a little bit before the trade deadline. If he doesn't turn around, I could see it. You know, maybe a, I think Kepler is, I would say second, because I do think during this week, if he doesn't turn around, maybe could see it. I think Kepler is, I would say, second, because I do think during this week, if he doesn't turn
Starting point is 00:25:28 around, maybe they DFA him and bring up Crawford and give a shot there of Crawford and Centerfield and then March and left. And then final is a bat. And I guess that's only because the Dembrowski comments really took some wind out of my sails. But I think it would be a mistake, and I think they need to go get a real bat.
Starting point is 00:25:44 I agree and I'd say in regard to Kepler this is his series right because they're going to face three righties and he's got three games to say okay Crybaby who's played two thirds of the games this year trying not to continue to bat 207. And I can't imagine in a clubhouse full of guys that have been with the club for so many years, I can't imagine this guy is well liked, and especially after those comments. Well, it had to be one big eye roll. If you're JT, you're Bryce, you're Schwerber, you've actually accomplished something in this game. Evenianos like yep I'm sure Cassianos. I'm sure if Kepler was looking at examples of well, you stuck with this guy
Starting point is 00:26:31 Why not me he would point to Cassianos last year my point max Kepler would be hey buddy That's a 10 plus year vet that has had really big All-star type seasons your max Kepler who Kepler. Like who do you think you are? So I know Thompson cleaned it up a little bit today, but I would bet that guys in the club house saw those comments and were like, who are you? Like who are you to make those comments? Yeah, well great job.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Keep it up, Jack. Appreciate you, Steve. Thanks so much for the phone call. Dylan's in Newcastle. What's happening, Dill? What up? How you doing, bro? Good, man. What do you got? So, just real quick. I wasn't going to mention the whole thing with Joe DeCamere. Oh, wait. I couldn't get through Final Out without the camera call.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I know. I'm sorry. I heard two commercials and I heard Joe DeCamere's voice and I got upset. Me too. Because I'm 100% Team Jack. But, you know, I was talking to my brother Dave earlier tonight that That's not true though. They had a trade off. But I mean at the same time we were supposed to get a Brandon Marsh who was supposed to be doing this three years ago You know hitting around 250 You know stealing bases and getting on base that that's that's why we traded for Brandon Marsh So, you know as far as that goes I'm happy to see Marsh where he's supposed to be as far as the overall, you know State of the fills go it's hard. it's hard to not be all in. At the same time, it's hard to be all in, if that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:28:12 This team, one weekend, will sweep the Braves at the end of the, you know, coming off a sweep in the Astros, or getting swept by the Astros. So it's hard not to be all in on this team, but it is hard to be all in on this team. So with that being said, you know, we've been floating around getting Louise Robert in a trade for the past three years. You know, what is he really gonna do at the end of the day?
Starting point is 00:28:43 I mean, he's supposed to bolster the offense, but you know, at the end of the day, if he's just being placed on the IELT, which he was today, what's he gonna do? Yeah, Luis Roberts is probably a bad bet. He's probably a bad bet. Unless he can get in for almost nothing prospect-wise. He's not someone that you can trust. If I was a rebuilding team or if I was a little further away and wasn't in a World Series window, I would take a shot on Luis Robert, but I think it's too big of a gamble for this team to take a shot on.
Starting point is 00:29:15 And to be quite honest with you, Jack, as far as that World Series window that you just mentioned, I don't think that window frankly exists. I mean, we're on the cusp of losing Kyle Schwab or JT Ormito and Rangers Suarez. Now, does that happen? Most likely not. We're going to probably retain two of those three guys. But the window that existed in 2022, I think has long been shut. The issue now is if Dave D'Abras is going to nail that window shut. You know, if you sign Rangers Suarez and you sign JT or you sign Rangers Suarez and you sign JT or you sign Rangers Suarez and you sign Kyle, the window stays open at least as far as a discussion.
Starting point is 00:29:51 But as far as, as far as Kyle's swarming goes, especially with the way he's, I mean, he's got 25 farm runs and 50 some RVIs before the all-star break. I think you got to pay Kyle no matter what he wants. If it's three years, a hundred million, you gotta pay him because he brings something to this team, especially with Bryce being out for the past month, which is supposed to be only 10 day IL by the way. With him bringing what he has to the team, you gotta keep him around because that window that existed in 22, otherwise without Kyle Schwaber, is nailed shut. So you gotta keep Ranger and you gotta keep Kyle.
Starting point is 00:30:26 If nothing else happens, even though Ranger's a Scott Boris guy and he's gonna get paid, you gotta keep Ranger. If it's Ranger and JT, great. If it's Ranger and Kyle, great. If it's just Ranger, that's a push to me because you gotta keep Ranger Suarez in this lineup. You gotta keep guys like Mick Able around
Starting point is 00:30:44 and Payner and Miller and Crawford. You got to keep guys like Mick Able around and Paynter and Miller and Crawford. You got to keep those guys around. So that it all really ties back into my point. It's hard to be all in and it's hard to be all out. Yeah I mean and I appreciate the phone call Dylan. I think that you echo a lot of how the fan base feels right now. I guess my pushback would be, and I know it sounds cliche and I'm so sorry to do this, but it's just that's baseball. I mean, you really have no idea. I think we talk in absolutes and I talk in absolutes
Starting point is 00:31:21 and we talk with such confidence one week and then doom and gloom the next week and this week a perfect example. Take two or three from the Mets, swept in Houston, two or three from the Braves, win tonight. The reality is none of us know. None of us know how a week in October is going to go. But I just find it tough to sit here and think you can't mortgage a little bit of the future to try to give this team a ride off into the sunset that I frankly think they deserve. And that's the decision that Dave Nobrowski has to make.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Does he want to put some wind at their sails or does he want to just ride it out? And I think that that's what this trade deadline's gonna do, but the more and more you watch them, makes it hard to not want to go all in. All right, tomorrow Chris Sanchez, who's been just dominant ever since that Blue Jays start, he, you know, for as good as Wheeler's been, for as good as Ranger's been, Chris has been just as good.
Starting point is 00:32:32 And he's facing our good old pal Nick Pivetta. Pivetta 336 ERA on the year, 4.71 ERA in June, and you know his last time out he went seven shut out against the National. So Nick Pivetta on the mound tomorrow against Chris Sanchez 635 down at CBP as they go for a series win over the Padres. Alright thanks so much for hanging out with the Final Lads and don't go anywhere TK he'll take your phone calls and he'll take you through the rest of the night here on sports radio 94WYP.
