As our heroes were stood outside their new property,
the inn that they have been gifted by Duke Ignarius,
that their duke's favourite has earned them,
is now theirs that they own,
after discovering that it is haunted by a terrifying spirit or spectre,
they were approached by two strangers,
two individuals dressed in strange garb,
who turned out to be the sister inquisitors of the ecliptic
order a pair that they had been the party had been sort of given some warning maybe on their trail
and had wished to speak to them inquiring about the events that took place in burnell and this
mysterious typhling caliphras and their involvement and their connection to the party but then it
seems that one of the
Sister Inquisitors, Sister Inquisitor
Maladie, took a particular interest
in Xanthius
and had a little private
conversation with him.
And we come back
into part two with
you guys after Rowan has just spoken to some
local children about the haunting,
about what's been going on,
we find ourselves ready to move on.
And what do you guys want to do next?
Carpool contest.
Let's go, bro.
Would it be acrobatics or athletics?
It'd be acrobatics, absolutely.
All right, let's go.
You're actually going. 16.
I can't do one.
22, baby.
Oh!
15.
Dancer.
You don't actually stop.
I just keep going.
You go down the road.
Do do do do do do do do.
What?
I enjoy it momentarily.
Out of, completely out of nowhere,
you all enjoy an impromptu cartwheel contest.
Okay. To which Ophelia wins. Thank you, Rowan. I needed to get that one out of nowhere, you all enjoy an impromptu cartwheel contest, to which Ophelia wins.
Thank you, Rowan.
I needed to get that one out of my system.
I've been wondering for a while now.
Can I cartwheel?
It turns out, no.
No?
No, not at all.
You did that thing of, like, you try and do it,
and then you just collapse immediately.
Yeah.
I deception myself.
It felt like I did a really cool one,
but no, I was all bent over and it was a mess.
No, it's all about momentum, Xanthius.
You have to start strong.
I can't hear you.
It's about to start, Xanthius.
Start strong.
She's still cartwheeling.
Cartwheel's back.
Hello.
I think you and I did rather well.
Not bad, yes.
I did one full cartwheel.
Good efforts.
With discussion of cartwheels done, my...
Do you want to go another round?
You start pulling a wagon.
You reach in the wheels.
Run a sandbox campaign, he said.
Make it more open to the player's decisions, he said.
Anyway, so yeah, you guys, it is the midday
of this bright, sunny afternoon.
As you guys are
around in Ashen's Rest,
what is the plan?
What is the plan?
What is the plan indeed? So, I feel like there's
various threads we could pull upon.
We could return to the original
problem of, you know, the lamp's just so many
demons.
Your original problem., you know, the lamp's just summoning demons. And like...
Your original problem.
Really pissed off orc captain of a guild,
head of the blacksmith's guild,
who looked pretty pissed off with us at the Duke's audience.
Or, you know, seeing where,
like investigate the lamplighter's guild more
or something like that.
Yeah. We could also prepare for, you know, seeing where, like, investigate the Lamplighter's Guild more or something like that. Yeah.
We could also prepare for, you know, confrontation with the ghost tonight.
You're making a quest log.
Let's make a quest log.
We could sit down for the next hour and make a quest log.
Yeah.
What do we call the quest that involves the Scarred Lady?
The Scarred Lady?
No, it has to have a really dumb pun name,
which is also kind of referential to common modern pop culture.
Something about going bump in the night.
Well, I was originally going to call this episode,
Who Are You Going to Call?
Yeah, okay.
Episode 15, Who Are You Going to Call?
Wouldn't have gone out with that name.
What?
What are you saying?
Get that SEO in there, man.
Ghostbusters Frozen Empire is going out soon.
Oh, everyone's searching for it.
I'm excited about it.
Well, now you've said it.
Hello, Ghostbusters.
What do you want?
I love her.
Okay, so Scarred Lady, Quest 1.
Quest 2, the Lamplighters Guild.
Underneath that one, we can go talk to the Blacksmiths Guild,
Carpenters Guild, go back to the Lamplighters,
potentially to report on our failure of a mission
of repairing the lamps,
potentially as a means to kind of
disguise ourselves as like, oh,
the mission just failed for us and we don't know
what happened. I want to work
more with you. Did we ever get payment for that?
We didn't, did we?
Well, we fixed one lamp and then I smashed it.
Lamps smashed.
So we just failed that mission completely.
Well...
It was smash the lamp or...
Die.
Die.
Yeah.
And also we got evidence out of it.
I'm also going to throw in there,
just because you picked it up off the bounty board,
if you were desperate for some gold...
I was about to say.
You could go hunt some gnolls.
That's true.
Gold per gnoll head.
And someone wanted something...
There's a bonus if you can find the kind of gnoll shaman that? You said we'd need to go get some gnoll heads.
Oh, right, okay, okay, okay.
Okay, okay, yeah, next time, don't give in to peer pressure,
just stay silent.
Absolutely.
I'm not going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet.
I'm going to be quiet. I'm going to be quiet. I'm going Okay, okay, yeah, next time, don't give him to pay for us.
You just take Simon.
Make up something funnier.
There was also another thing which I think might have been just missed
because there was a lot of stuff happening at the time.
The Duke did mention that there might be something
that he wanted to discuss with you all,
or maybe with the Considerate, at the public audience.
There was a brief kind of like,
oh, I might have some work for you,
or something like that.
I can't remember if we can speak to the Considerate about that.
Yes, you can.
Yeah, I guess, I can't remember if we left that on a,
you come to us, or we'll come to you.
I think we have to go to the considerate specifically.
Also, would Gruff want to start getting ready for the tourney?
Yeah, oh, he's watching the calendar every day,
eight days to tourney day.
Eight days.
We'll get Gruff ready.
So seven days, and then the tourney's on the eighth day.
So you've got seven days pre-time.
Gruff doesn't know what he's doing at the tourney, though.
He's very nervous.
I'll get you kitted out.
Oh, God.
Armour.
Get you some weapons. Get you look, I'll get you some weapons.
I'll get you a horse.
You want a horse?
What would he do with a horse?
A skeletal steed.
Are there?
Horses are very rare in the Draconic Empire.
There are, like, riding drakes, which are more common.
Horses are found, but they're, like, rare.
They're, like, imported.
Or they're magical, like magical steeds and stuff like that.
Skeletal drakes.
Yeah. Gruff just wants to go find
Ser Gryll and hang out.
That's all Gruff wants to do.
Ophelia, did you speak with the
scarred lady in the house?
I spoke to it.
Well, she
closed the shutters very
slowly in a manner which would indicate that they are Well, she closed the shutters very slowly
in a manner which would indicate
that they are maybe reciprocative towards our kindness,
if we are willing to show it towards her.
When I look at the house,
are the shutters still just blowing in the breeze?
Well, yeah, I mean, there's a very light breeze today.
It's not like a strong wind or anything like that.
But it's more that the shutters are just loose.
They've not been secured.
Some of them are old, falling off hinges.
It could be that maybe they moved them
in a way of indicating something to Ophelia.
It could just be that they're just old and they just moved.
She might be talking a load of rubbish.
She might be that a load of rubbish.
It might be that the ghost wants to speak.
Who knows?
I'm happy to follow your advice in anything related to this ghostly matter.
I believe you will know best.
Then all of us, unless anyone else here has some hidden...
I say it again.
Old priest.
Right, yes, no, absolutely.
I just want to make sure.
They did say that they had priests.
They said that priests have been there in the past
and they just, whoop, nope.
Right out of there.
We could try, though.
I mean, it doesn't hurt.
Backed up by a group of scrappy warriors.
Maybe they'll come back.
Wait, is that us?
Yes.
Scrappy?
Yes.
You really consider us scrappy?
You think we're warriors?
Warriors, I'll take, but scrappy, it hurts.
Have you seen yourself fight?
Valiantly?
Goes all over the place.
Sometimes back to you.
Yeah, yeah.
Now, as the treasurer of this group,
I think we're quite low on funds.
Sorry, hang on, just, you're the treasurer of the group?
I was just trying out a title for the pillars.
Right, okay.
Well, if you were the treasurer of the group,
that's a good point.
How much do we actually have between us?
I've got 31 gold.
29.
Yes, I've got 31 total, but it's-
56. 20 if it's... 56.
20 if it's silver.
27, but money is meaningless in the void.
60 gold.
One thing I'm gonna say as well is if you want to,
you, rather than, if you don't want to go out and be like,
oh, well, let's go out and do this specific quest
or do things like that,
if you also just want to accelerate time and speed time up... It's a tournament you can do things well we can do things like downtime
so like you can spend the day going out and doing odd jobs and doing labor and things like that to
make a small amount of money if you want to it's not a large amount of money but you can make like
you know a few you can make a bit of gold here and there um and that will include doing like
odd little jobs around the town like we need somebody to help haul in like
cargo from the river to a shop
and things like that
or like performing as an entertainer
you can go around and do Rowan
people that have got like any artisan skills
can go and offer those
but we can also just skip ahead time
if people are like we spend the day gathering information
you can do things like that
we just want to get to sunset, right, and then we
could deal with the ghost. Yeah, it's just whether
or not we want to do... We don't have a place to stay for free right now.
If we want to do ghost stuff right now
or if we want to... If we want to do
something else and then...
That we'd have to pay for another night in a place.
And do we want to prep? Like, do we want to prep
anything? I don't know. Yeah.
And, like, downtime can include things like gathering information,
like crafting things, like, like you know we can make most stuff work as well if people want to do like
for example if you're like can we just spend the afternoon gathering information about the
lamplighters guild right absolutely that's something you can do that's something all of
you can do there's something one or two of you can do you know there's things that we can do to
pass on we don't have to role play out every hour of every week. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, I'm trying to remember, what was the fate of Caveon Calling?
There wasn't?
I don't think we've heard about his fate.
He was just the previous owner.
Yeah.
And their wife is the wife we don't know is the Scarred Lady.
But the owner lost his wife because the business went under.
I think that's all we find out.
Yeah.
Okay.
We didn't find out.
I could try and seek out this.
They didn't like the Enticing Devil.
People didn't like that.
The name of the priest didn't.
It kind of got, like, a bad, like, the church basically put, like,
a smear campaign on it and said, don't go to this place.
That caused the business to suffer.
Cool. Was the idea of that. You could even, yeah, if you wanted go to this place. That caused the business to suffer. Cool.
Was the idea of that.
You could even, yeah,
if you wanted to gather information about the Scarred Lady,
or the inn.
I was going to find out about ghosts
and how best to stop them.
Sure, yeah.
You can absolutely do that.
Is holy water a thing?
Is salt a thing?
Do you have a place in mind specifically
that you want to go to
to gather that information?
You've got your map there, if you want to have a look at that.
Map.
There's a couple of shrines, aren't there?
Maybe I should have...
I think what I would like to do...
A cathedral or a general store,
but they might try and sell me something that's like...
Yeah, here's some salt.
You're the treasurer.
This is holy water.
What's snake oil?
Snake oil, my work.
My work, my work.
We don't know.
I'll go to Bright Shadow Cathedral, I think.
Okay.
What was the House of Bindings?
That's the kind of grave...
That is Saint Dethir's temple, yes.
It's like a shrine to Saint Dethir.
So that could be good as well.
I'll try both of those if I'm not successful.
I mean, that whole area, yeah, they're close to each other.
I'd say that you can spend the afternoon basically gathering information there.
Sounds good.
All right, I'll come back to you in a minute.
Is there a library?
There is, yeah, the House of the Quill and the Scale.
So it's another shrine.
It's the Shrine to St. Avernor,
but it is also a public library and a general sort of place of learning as well.
That is closer to the Grumpy Hog.
Learn about ghosts.
I'll start up at Bright Shadow, all the way south.
All right.
So Rowan's going to be doing that.
Anything from anyone else?
I would like to try to determine the fate of Kavon,
the previous owner of the...
Of the inn?
Get rumors.
Where do you want to do that?
I think I'd start with speaking to people,
well, people that live in the area.
So like this area in particular?
Yeah, if there's anyone that may have stayed here,
what was it, four years ago or something like that?
Yeah, I think that was the thing.
I think that was the other thing I was going to retcon slightly. I think I might have thrown out like ten years ago or something like that uh yeah i think that was the thing i didn't think i think that was the other thing i was going to wreck on slightly i think i might have thrown out
like like 10 years ago or something like that before i actually forgotten i'd written it down
it was uh four years ago four years okay so um yeah anyone that might have been in the area four
years ago might know the story of what happened with the enticing devil um but more specifically
i'm trying to determine where this guy might be so I can speak with him
directly sure sure sure he's still alive um if yeah I mean yeah and Daisy did you want to do the
same thing I think I'll go with Xanthius because we were yeah I heard the same stuff so in that
case it will be the two of you one of you will make a roll the other is going to give you
advantage it can be a help action okay you guys got information because there's going to be some
roles involved yeah okay I'm also relayed to the team that the kids told me
the Scarred Lady is in that top room.
Top room, great.
That's where she's most often seen.
That's what the kids said, yeah.
What about Gruffydd and Ophelia?
What are you guys going to spend the afternoon doing?
It doesn't have to relate to the Scarred Lady.
You can go off and do your own thing.
You could go off preaching.
If you want to go around and start preaching the word of the Gravefather.
I was thinking of exploring the tavern a little bit
and looking into that unused room for a possible Gravefather shrine.
Right, yeah, yeah.
So the actual Enticing Dead.
So you've got the outhouse, the outbuilding, not the outhouse.
It's the outbuilding.
It's like a shed, it's like a massive shed.
Like a little small barn.
Yeah, you can just, what, exploring the inn
and then that room and just sort of sizing it up?
But also like, also as I'm going around,
like talking to the Scarred Lady about us
and like letting her know about us.
Like, just like.
That's cute.
Just like, we have Daisy and Xanthius her know about us. That's cute. In your own way.
We have Daisy and Xanthius
and they're quite delightful
really.
While you're doing that, are you
measuring
what are you spending the time
doing? You're talking in that to the Scarred Lady, but are you
trying to plan out what
your shrine might look like? Are you sizing
things up? If you don't mind,
do you mind if I just quickly have a look in this spare room here?
I wonder what it was used for.
I hope you'll tell us.
I hope you'll tell us.
Sure, sure, sure.
Yeah, just having a look around, scoping out the space,
seeing if there's any material in the garden I could use.
Okay, yeah.
Okay, yeah.
All right.
I can work with that.
That sounds good.
And then what about Gruffydd?
I'm torn between doing something helpful and going fishing.
Well, I mean, you've got time.
Do Gruff things if you want to do Gruff things.
Because I think he would be like,
everyone's going to need to eat tonight.
It's going to be a long night, and we have very few resources.
He's been dead.
And very no food.
So you're trying to reduce our daily costs, basically, by doing that.
Gruff, we have stuff in the pantry.
Just dust.
Screaming faces.
And I guess, yeah, I feel like as well, Gruff, his routine has been so disrupted.
He kind of really needs to go back to something he knows.
He feels so insecure with everything.
I know fishing. I'm going to go
fishing. I know how to fish.
Yeah, absolutely.
Sounds good. I mean, yeah, you can
not only will you probably be able to catch enough
for a dinner, but you'll also make some money
because you can sell any excess
river fish and stuff to the locals
and things like that. I've actually got a feature in my
background. That's your background feature, right? I've got Harvest the Water.
What does it say?
You gain advantage on ability checks made using Fishing Tackle.
If you have access to a body of water that sustains marine life,
you can maintain a moderate lifestyle while working as a fisher,
and you can catch enough food to feed yourself and up to 10 other people each day.
Yeah.
Great.
I mean, the river is definitely going to provide you with that.
It's going to basically take up, like day right to do this is like a downtime activity
um and then i'm going to say that anything like you you probably you know because you can catch
up to like 10 people you only need it for five people so you'll probably sell the excess and
things like that as well but i'm going to kind of wrap this into a downtime activity for you
um but you'll keep advantage because you are basically fishing and you've got access to it.
So when you make a check,
it'll be advantage.
But you'll always,
even if you roll a nat one,
you'll always have enough
to feed the crew, basically.
Right?
I just like to see those features
actually being used.
Yeah, they often get forgotten about,
but actually I really like using them
and like, you know,
feel free to remind me
of what your backgrounds are
and like I'll always find ways
to incorporate it
because I think that they're very sorely underused.
Murderer.
My background is shard heart inserter.
Ah, okay.
Very funny.
What a funny guy.
Knew it.
I knew I recognized you.
I'm pretty sure I used lovely access as Nova.
Great father, Blesh.
You are?
I'm blessed.
Yeah, I used lovely access as Nova
because I kept going around going,
Laby card!
Yeah.
So, let's do some rolls then
and see where people get to.
So, Gruff is fishing.
We'll start at the top.
Rowan, for a gathering of information,
because you're basically asking for advice
and rumours and things like that
about dealing with ghosts.
So, you've got a choice here.
You can either do this as a persuasion roll or a religion role let me quickly look now i would love to persuade very cute yeah go for it
it's more like asking the right people i guess um the right question so here we go
the right question. So here we go.
21.
21, great stuff.
Nice.
Let me write down your results.
Ghosts, what do?
What do?
I'm just trying to get my-
That's the right question.
Hey, what that ghost do?
What that ghost do?
What that ghost do?
Facebooky.
Hey there, it's me, your boy.
Oh, that's the episode title.
That's the question.
No, it's not. That's the question. What that ghost boo.
No.
What that ghost boo.
Yeah.
He's heading deep into the library of his mind.
Yeah.
All right.
I think ghostly knowledge.
I'm going to give you, for a 21,
I'm going to give you three pieces of lore,
like information for that.
Ghost lore. Ghost lore.
Cool.
No.
Xanthius and Daisy, you guys are working together.
So the two of you, because you're kind of like gossiping
and asking for rumors and things like that.
So this is either persuasion, like charisma persuasion,
or history, and whoever makes the roll,
whichever one of you makes the roll has advantage
because the other one is giving you the help action.
I have plus two persuasion or zero in history. I have the same as you, so. and whoever makes the roll, whichever one of you makes the roll, has advantage, because the other one is giving you the help action.
I have plus two persuasion or zero in history.
I have the same as you, so...
You know what? You go, girl.
Okay, so with advantage?
Do it, I believe.
I don't, but okay.
You're ready.
With advantage.
Pretty good.
17.
17. That's going to be two pieces of information.
Yeah, better than me.
I'll give you the actual answers to these.
I'm just working out exactly what people get.
Ophelia, so you are going around sort of like talking to the spirit
as you're doing things,
but you're also kind of investigating the inn, right?
Because you're like going through cupboards
and searching through, like examining the room,
searching through barrels and stuff.
That's kind of what the impression I got from you was.
So can you give me an investigation check
just to see what you might uncover?
Cool, cool, cool.
Searching around the inn.
Ooh, 21.
Jeez. 21.
All right. I know.
You will find something. You will find a rare thing. Ooh. All right. You will find something. You will find a rare thing.
Oh, a rare thing!
Yeah.
And then Gruff, can I get an athletics check
with advantage because of your fisherman background
to do basically a day's work?
Very nice.
Good, honest day's work.
18, 19, 20.
20 points.
20 points. So that is going to be...
Fish is sharp.
In these waters.
Like the Animal Crossing thing when the giant thing comes out.
Holy shit!
I don't remember the dialogue scene there.
I've definitely seen that edit.
Holy shit. Jesus Christ.
Seal of Kempth.
Seal of Kemp. Seal of Kemp is nuts.
What's that really long fish?
That's the fact that comes up.
Wow, you really can seal of Kemp, he's nuts.
Right.
Finish with your jollies?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Good.
So Rowan, you spend the day, the rest of the day,
kind of bouncing between Bright Shadow Cathedral,
the House of Bindings, and the House of the Quill and Scale.
And you learn a little something from everywhere.
You would find out that there have been attempts
to try and exercise the spirit of the scarred lady before,
but they've been unsuccessful. Either that the priests who tried it were attacked and scared off,
or they have destroyed the ghost spirit, but it has returned a few days afterwards. It seems that there is a belief that until the ghost is put to rest,
even if you destroy them,
they will keep coming back again and again and again.
So you can destroy a ghost.
This is all part of the same answer.
You would find out as part of that
that through magic, through weapons,
you are able to fight and destroy the spirit but unless you put her to rest
she will return after a period of time okay and that could be anywhere between two and five days
it can take for her to re-manifest just keep doing that uh grind for xp you don't get xp damn it
oh i'm doing xp differently um the next piece of law that you would learn is um some knowledge about
sort of ghosts and their resistances i would say like kind of like some things like some things
that you know is important to know about them uh once i can get access to my week to get access to my wiki notes. We have a ghost slaying loot.
So it better be loot.
Skull lady.
So you would learn that ghosts are pretty much resistant to most things.
They're resistant to acid, fire, lightning, thunder, and non-magical weapons.
And they are completely immune to cold, necrotic and poison, as you might expect.
So all things, basically.
Pretty much, a lot of stuff.
Yeah, radiant energy, not.
All the small things.
Psychic damage, they're not, things like that.
Oh, okay.
They are incorporeal,
which allows them to move through objects and people
and if they move through people,
it is generally a harmful experience for them.
Ghosts also have the ability to possess creatures.
They can physically possess a body
contested by a sort of battle of the personalities.
If a person is possessed,
then that possession can last seemingly indefinitely
until the possession is
forced to an end. Just indefinite.
I'd love that to happen. There is a spell
called Protection from Evil and Good
which will end a possession.
It is cast on someone.
So you learn all of that stuff.
Cool. Can
Percival be possessed? Possess-iful?
He's been in the house.
And then the last thing you would learn
is that if a ghost has a particular attachment to a location,
they generally gain powers over that location,
not just the ghost themselves.
They gain the power to shape that environment.
Generally, this manifests in a way where they can control things like shadows or darkness.
They can animate objects and have them potentially attack people and things like that as well.
and potentially attack people and things like that as well.
But also, these powers tend to be related either into the manner in which they were killed,
or they were buried, or they were somehow...
There's normally some connection between these abilities.
Okay.
All right. You happy with those?
Yeah.
Okay, nice.
I will relay that to the team later on in the day.
Yeah, sure.
We'll assume that you guys will meet back up.
We'll meet back up.
And stuff like that as well.
Standing by torchlight outside a creepy house
as the dawn dusks.
Don't ruin my moment.
Daisy and Xanthius,
you guys spend the afternoon asking around town
about this Kavon and the inn itself.
Yes.
Right?
You would find out some information.
You would find out that the enticing devil inn
was previously owned by Kavon and Tyria Medrick.
Tyria, okay.
Yeah, Kavon and Tyria Medrick.
They were a young human couple who bought the inn,
decided to open it,
and you kind of already know some of this stuff,
so this isn't going to count.
That the inn's name, unfortunately,
brought a bad reputation.
The inn basically was no longer functional as a business.
It was losing money.
And that's the information you know so far.
Two pieces of information you gather from the locals,
because people do remember it,
and they remember Kavon.
They remember that initially, Kavon and Tyria seemed like a happy couple with great plans for the future however
after the inn kind of was blacklisted by the church um he fell into depression and became
began drinking quite heavily he became a you know a very uh slovenly quite nasty drunk
a very slovenly, quite nasty drunk,
whilst Tyria kept trying to keep the inn running.
You would know that Kavon left just around the time the hauntings were beginning.
He sold the deed into the city very rapidly.
And that his wife, Tyria, he said that she had left him a few days earlier,
had gone back to her family in Kelskaris,
and he sold the property and said that he was going to sober up
and try and win her back, and he left to go chase after her,
is what the locals understand is the story behind that.
I see. Or she died and haunts it.
As to where Kavon is now,
people just believe, like, nobody's ever gone to look for him,
nobody's ever chased it up.
The authorities at the time, obviously, you know,
there's no indication that, like,
a case was open to look into any of this.
The ghost just seems to have become, like, a local thing
that people are like, oh, it's haunted now.
It's kind of like a lot of hearsay, a lot of rumour, a lot of, like,
well, you know, it could be anything.
Okay.
But Kavon was never chased up.
Yeah, well, that's where he said he was at.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Okay, well, Kavon and Tyria, what's where he said he was at. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Okay.
Well, Cavon and Tyria...
What was the last name, sorry?
Medrick.
Medrick.
Okay.
Yeah.
Cool.
Alrighty.
That was two things, sorry?
Yeah.
You got the...
Yeah, he was drunk and slovenly.
Basically, he turned into a horrid drunk.
And then the next piece of information is,
yeah, he basically...
His wife...
This is what he claims.
His wife left.
She went back to her family.
He tried to...
He spent a couple of days trying to get things back together.
He ended up selling the place
and said that he was going to sober up
and try and win her back, was the story.
Sure, okay.
And they went to Kelskaris.
She had family in Kelskaris.
Okay.
And I'll even give you her, like, former name.
Like, they were married.
Okay.
But her former name would have been...
Adler. So, have been Adler.
So Tyria Adler.
So they got married in the city?
They were married before they arrived in Ashenrest.
Okay.
But that was her name before she married Kon cavon medrick um and people seem to you know people say that like she was lovely she seemed she was trying her best um you know their their
kind of hopes got like you know their dreams got demolished a lot of people quite felt bad for them
they felt the church was quite unfair and unkind to them um you know, it's very, very strong religious community
got them blacklisted and they just couldn't make ends meet.
There was a lot of sort of like, you know,
effort to make sure that they didn't succeed in business
and stuff like that.
But people said that they seemed like a nice couple.
They seemed like a nice, happy couple.
And then, yeah, just an unfortunate situation.
And then, you know, a lot of people saying things like,
oh, we hope that, you know, hope that Kavon, you know, got sober
and won her back and seemed, you know,
made things right and stuff like that.
Okay.
Ophelia, you have been searching the outbuilding.
You find the outbuilding is like,
you know, there's some like broken barrels
and broken crates, solid foundations.
The walls are a little bit like,
you know, termite bitten and stuff like that
like probably
could either
could be easily repaired
or could be knocked down
and a whole new structure
could be built here
and it's a big enough space
it's about 20 feet
by 30 feet
could easily be converted
into a small shrine
into a
like a
like a small church
like a very small
like little
little thing
you've got to start small
yeah
or like a tower or like you know you could build kind got to start small. Yeah. Or like a tower, or
like, you know, you could build kind of whatever you
want in this space, as long as it fits within those
kind of dimensions, right? But you also
spend a bit of time exploring the inn,
and like searching around the enticing
devil inn. And
you
being who you are, and your connection
to undead and death,
you know that there is a presence here in this house.
That is unmistakable.
The same feeling that when you would explore,
like when a member of the House of Shadows would pass you
and the hair on the back of your neck would get pulled up
or you would get a slight chill on your arms.
You get those sensations.
You can tell that she is weakened during the day and isn't able to manifest,
but come nightfall, this spirit's probably going to be very active in this place,
but is not quite coherent or powerful enough to really interact with you during the daylight.
You explore around. You find, going through all the different rooms,
when you go upstairs into the bedrooms, the guest rooms of the inn are all fairly untouched.
The windows are broken, the furniture's been smashed or rotten away long ago.
Anything of value stripped out of it, but they're fairly normal.
The master bedroom, though, is a mess.
This is a scene of violence.
You can see that something has demolished this room.
It's, like, broken everything.
There was once a pretty dresser,
and the mirror on it's all been smashed to pieces.
The furniture's been broken.
The windows have been broken.
Clearly, like, you know,
this spirit probably has a great anger in this space,
and it's wrecked it, and is, you know, capable of that.
in this space and has wrecked it and is capable of that.
You find under the bed an old hairbrush and you find maybe a ring that's been forgotten,
like a simple little coppery brass thing.
Nothing too expensive, but it looks like it's been missed
by whatever thieves and scavengers have picked this place apart.
But you find those
the ring has uh the initials uh c and t on it um and the hairbrush has like a faint a faint uh
painted um like flower pattern on the back but it's you know faded over a few years have been
sort of forgotten about um a few strands of hair still cling to it. I think Ophelia would, like,
respectfully put them on the dresser.
Like, lay them out so they're nice.
Yeah.
And just, like, say, oh, like, comment,
like, to say, oh, your room looks like it was wonderful,
like a sanctuary.
You kind of hear those words kind of echo in the silence. As you and Percival are the only ones here,
you can hear occasional sweeping sounds from Percival.
But it's down in the cellar
that you actually uncover something hidden.
The tiniest glance,
maybe it's even Percival's help
because as you're going down,
Percival comes down
and he's been piling like the broken debris down here.
Like he's been bringing it down into the cellar
and he's like piling it away as like a little garbage pile.
And you, as he's sweeping the floor,
his little broken broom catches on a flagstone
that is ever so slightly loose.
Looks like it was maybe once lifted up.
And you go over and flip the flagstone open
and there is a small cavity that's been dug out.
It looks like it's been crudely dug out.
And inside are these kind of very old,
probably rotten a little bit, like mould and stuff on them,
bedsheets, and something's wrapped up inside them.
Hmm.
Okay. them hmm okay um do they look old like can I make like a you can make an investigation check yeah because this is like something you know just glancing at them you're not sure how old these
might be but if you make a check sure 12 12 Twelve. Twelve? Twelve's enough. I'd say that, yeah, I mean, about four years old.
And they are, there's bloodstains.
Like these, there's, as you, the initial, like, top bit of them,
but as you pull them loose, they're soaked in blood.
And there's something inside,
like a kind of slightly heavy object inside.
But it's, you know, like a bed sheet
that's been, you know, bundled up.
It's not massive.
It's not like, this isn't a body or anything like that.
Could be a bird, her body.
It could be like an arm.
This isn't like a head.
You can immediately tell it's not like a head shape
or anything like that.
It's maybe sort of, yeah, like six inches.
And as you kind of feel around, like, ah, it's sharp.
Ophelia will take it out and lay it on the stone in front of her.
It is a bloody kitchen knife.
Yep.
That's not right.
Ophelia will just look at it, like,
would she know at this point would this, like, would she put two and two together?
You can make whatever assumptions
you think your character would make.
Like, I'm not going to confirm or deny anything.
Like, you know, you can ask me a question.
I can, you know, you can say, like,
is this this, or does it look like this?
But, you know, any assumptions on a grander scale
is really up to you and your character.
Knife.
I think, yeah, she'll just look at the knife
and just be like,
I'm sorry this happened in your home. I think, yeah, she'll just look at the knife and just be like,
I'm sorry this happened in your home.
I don't know what this indicates entirely,
but it doesn't seem like you had a peaceful life here.
I'm sorry.
And we have silence.
With that, Gruffydd, met with silence with that
Gruffith
you have a delightful
day fishing
it does rain later in the afternoon
as the afternoon draws in
it begins to rain, most of you are inside
or you take moments to duck into things
but you on the riverbank
you maybe actually head out of the city
and go along the riverbank a little bit
because the actual city,
sorry,
the town's riverside
is more like a barge port
with like trade and things.
So you go down,
you're just sat on the banks
and yeah,
delightful day of fishing.
Rain comes down,
but that doesn't bother you.
You're used to the cold.
Doesn't affect you
in the slightest.
And you have a great day's fishing.
By the time you haul
your catch back into town, you manage to
sell a bunch of it. You make 15
gold.
Comfortable day's wage
in this economy.
The thing I didn't go with you, I'm just imagining
if I go on a boat,
like, I'm fishing, enjoying having a
great day with you, and then behind us there's
two inquisitors on the boat also fishing.
Just with a telescope? Like, looking at you? great day with you, and then behind us there's two inquisitors also fishing. Do, do, do, do.
Just with a telescope, like looking at you.
You're not thinking of leaving, are you?
Got the eye holes cut out.
They are the fish.
But no, you, yeah, by the time you get back,
you managed to sell it for about 15 gold.
You obviously still have enough for the folks at dinner and stuff as well.
And yeah, you make maybe a couple of little local friends,
like some other fishermen that you bump into,
have a lovely chat with.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
And yeah, you've had a lovely day.
Wonderful day.
Yeah.
Gorgeous.
Just what you needed.
Kind of like a...
It would be like a trout, I guess.
Kind of like a trout here.
But its scales are almost like ruby red.
Like it's kind of like from the...
Probably from the soil and from
the magical influence of the dragons.
It's like a ruby red
trout.
I'll think of a name for it.
Ash trout. No.
I use ash for everything. I'm going to try not
to do that. But yeah, you
come back with a lovely catch of the day.
It is late by the time
you all reconvene uh the sun
is setting is just about to turn fully night time as the rain
you can hear it pattering on the nearby roofs um the street lights the everlights of the
lamplighters guild begun uh you see the Lamplighters going about their business, activating the lights, taking their silver coin.
A Lamplighter does begin to proceed down your street
and near Maeve's Cafe, Maeve comes out,
pays the silver coin, there's a light right on the corner there.
But by the time it reaches you,
the light outside the Enticing Devil is broken
and has been broken for a long time.
The Lamplighter just looks away doesn't
look at the the inn is like oh it's the scary inn and like immediately just carries on until they're
far down the street area thing it's uh i know it's like the fact that the lamplighters guild don't
seem to want to mess with it um yeah i mean this abandoned haunted house has been here for four
years yeah legend news gets around yeah um but yeah and leave and leaves them to it as well Yeah, I mean, this abandoned haunted house has been here for four years. Yeah. Cool legend.
News gets around.
Yeah.
But yeah, and leaves them to it as well.
There's no sign that this ever light outside the inn has ever,
like, it's not been tried to be fixed in, like, a good few years.
Like, it's just been left as, like, an empty pole, basically.
But yeah, you all meet back up.
Yeah, I guess ready to light a torch, because if there's no light here... No, it's going to be dark in the inn
and without any light sources and stuff, yeah.
I guess we'll relay all the information that we have gathered.
All right, well, give me a minute.
You guys can have a talk.
I feel like while you guys are all diverging
all the wonderful information that you found out,
Gruff's just in a corner gutting and filleting the fish.
They're just, like, prepping it.
We're on, like, the side of the road, right?
Pretty much that.
And I guess you come out of the house, right?
Or are you staying in there?
Well, I can, yeah, I can open the door, welcome you guys in.
It is raining.
I don't want to go in just yet.
You don't want to go in?
Okay, then I'll come out and meet you.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, we have a 3D model map.
3D model map of the tavern.
That's the theme song of the tavern.
3D model map of the tavern.
Spooky, scary tavern haunted by a ghost.
That's the theme song, well done.
You know what, I'll take a picture of this
and I will put this on the Patreon for everyone to access
if you wanna see this, podcast listeners.
Where you ghost at?
Where that ghost though?
Where that ghost at?
What that ghost do, boo.
Boo.
Yeah.
Okay, so what's,
we've already shared the information, right?
Yeah.
So you guys are actually inside at the moment.
We've been welcomed in the doorway by Ophelia.
Wielding a bloody knife.
Hi!
Wielding a bloody knife.
Ophelia, it's still safe to come in, yes?
So far, yes, the spirit seems quite docile,
but I shan't imagine she'll be docile for much longer.
Yeah, there's still a little bit of daylight.
This is sunset, so the light is coming down.
Okay, should we try to ensure that we have a way out
if things do get a little bit too much during the night?
Oh, yes, yes, I mean, leave.
Any window.
Oh, I suppose any window.
The doors are open.
11 of them.
11, although every window has a shutter, right?
They're quite small, actually.
They're, small, actually.
You can crawl through them.
Rowan might struggle.
Daisy would be able to get through them pretty easily.
I'd say Rowan and Gruff might struggle.
You'll basically be squeezing through it,
so it counts as double difficulty.
Huh?
You could try.
I mean, they're pretty solid, but yeah. But not every window has shutters, or do they all?
Some of the shutters are falling off and things like that, yeah.
They're pretty broken.
I'm just preparing for, you know...
And then we just can't...
Maybe, yeah.
They could all be shut, yes.
The windows could all technically be shut.
Some of them might be weaker,
like you might be able to prise them off and stuff like that.
And there is also the outbuilding if you require shelter
but do not wish to stay within the tavern itself tonight.
There is an option.
In the kitchen there is a back door.
I ran out of doors for the mini.
But on the kitchen on the far side there is a door out of this way
which leads into the garden.
It's 45 degrees.
Well, I don't think we'll find much in the outbuilding.
I can also remove the balcony.
I assume we all intend to stay here for as long as we can.
Yes, which also, while I was investigating,
I found this, and I present the knife.
Oh, okay.
Under one of the flagstones in the living quarters.
The living quarters? Mm. Oh, in the cellar. Not the cellar. In the cellar, okay. Under one of the flagstones in the living quarters. The living quarters?
Mm.
Oh, no.
In the cellar.
In the cellar, sorry.
Hidden.
Hidden, yes, under the flagstone.
It would appear that whatever happened here did not end well.
I don't think she left.
I think she was killed.
By Camon?
By her husband. Okay. In the walls.
Don't make sense why the spirit is so angered.
Well, apparently he went back to Kelskaris,
but nobody actually followed up, so we don't know.
But that means there would be a body somewhere.
Four years ago, sure, but there would be a body.
Do you have any more information
about this individual who used to live here?
Used to be when the bar went downhill.
After the priests basically shut the place down
just for its name.
I assume just for its name.
He started drinking a lot and became quite nasty.
So he could have been quite nasty to her.
Okay. She was apparently very nice.
And apparently well loved before the tavern started going under because of interference.
And he sold it and left,
he sold it right as the hauntings were starting.
So the hauntings started and he sold it right as the hauntings were starting.
So the hauntings started
and he sold it almost immediately.
Oh, no wonder she would be angry, I suppose then.
She's been trapped in this place.
You just hear that drumming of the rain.
Some of it is coming through.
There is a portion of the roof is collapsed
over near the stairs.
There's a deluge coming down onto the floorboards.
If that is, she's not been heard of since,
neither is he, nobody's looked into it,
so we don't know if they're still alive.
But if she was hurt here, there would be,
there would be something to find.
Someone was hurt here. I suppose, somewhere.
But it's a good question, actually,
what kind of way do we address this ghost? I mean, Rowan, you might know question, actually. What kind of way do we address this ghost?
I mean, Rowan, you might know more, actually.
Yes, I know everything about ghosts.
Okay, good.
So they've tried to exorcise the ghost in the past.
It's failed every time.
Either they've run away because it's scary.
Not us.
Not us.
Correct.
It's also been fought and destroyed.
Well, ghosts can be fought and destroyed,
but they can manifest back into a ghost a few days later
if they're not put to rest.
How would we put a ghost to rest?
I don't know.
I didn't ask.
I assume we need to find out what they're angry about,
what keeps them here in our plane
and doesn't allow them to pass on.
I feel like they need their peace.
Well, this knife is a good start.
Also, I've been talking to the ghost as well,
introducing you all to her so she knows all of you,
and I also said that we wouldn't hurt her.
We would be kind and we would show her grace,
so if we could not resort to violence.
Well, that's what I mean.
I don't want to anger the ghost.
No.
So.
We just try and have a conversation,
see how far we get, perhaps.
I hope it goes well.
Oh, me too.
It might already be that she's angry
and there's nothing we can do.
So we must be prepared to defend ourselves, is all I'm saying.
And then we'll, if we defend ourselves,
at least have some time to potentially find something for when she returns.
Yes.
Let's meet our...
roommate.
Now, do we go upstairs?
Where the ghost is?
We don't have to right away, do we?
Well, I mean, if that's where the ghost is manifesting
and we intend to speak with the ghost...
It was quite a lovely room from what I could see.
You've been in there?
Yes, I found a couple of things. I found a hairbrush and I found a nice copper ring
under the bed. It was missed by whatever vandals came and wrecked the place afterwards. It
seems to be some very personal artefacts.
Was it a wedding ring?
It had initials on the band.
C&T, I believe.
And why would she leave without the wedding ring?
Last few traces of sunlight just beginning to disappear over the horizon
as darkness is fully settling in.
The door is open.
Quite a lot of the rain and wind is coming in through the open doors,
because I'm assuming you're all still stood by the open doors.
I'll close them.
Okay.
So Rowan kind of steps in.
I wouldn't knock them, but I'll just put them to sleep.
Save the ghost the trouble of doing it.
Yeah.
You are left in a pretty pitch black,
ruined, broken inn tavern main room.
What light sources do you guys have?
I know Ophelia doesn't need them.
Your darkvision will kick in.
I will put light on my dagger.
So you just hold up the little blade.
I'll probably keep it at my hip and just tap it.
Okay.
I think she uses it like...
Do you want it on the scabbard or on the blade?
Because obviously if you have it in a scabbard,
if it's the blade, it will...
I don't think she usually has it in a...
She just has it tucked into a belt?
Yeah, she kinda just has it tucked into a belt.
Yeah, you can do that.
Yeah, so there's a little bit of light
coming off your belt,
casting everything in this kind of golden glow any other light
sources or just days um i've got a torch i've got a torch so i'll just turn those i landed
yeah the bullseye lantern you can also leave like on a table and stuff i might leave it yeah well
depending on what happens i've got it on me for now torches obviously you're gonna have to carry
those uh there are like sconces on the walls that you could put them in as well uh but obviously
you're gonna be leaving them in place um it does look like any of the old torches.
There's a few melted candle stubs,
but not really anything left.
There's a few broken lantern casings,
but there's no, apart from the sconces,
there's not really anything left here for you to use as light.
I do still have three.
There's a big candelabra as well
that sits in the middle,
hangs down from the ceiling.
The sconce is on the walls.
Could I put my remaining torches in there?
I still have three.
Yeah.
So that would illuminate this room,
especially with Daisy's light and the bullseye lantern.
Between all of your lights,
that would easily illuminate this room.
Is there a fireplace in here as well?
There's not a fireplace in this area.
There's a fireplace in the kitchen
for like the stove, basically.
Maybe something that you could renovate,
but Mark didn't have a cool fireplace mini
and didn't know where to put it.
I think what I would do is use one of them
between the stairs down from upstairs and the front door,
and then keep two on me and I want to,
if there's, can I see if there's like sconces upstairs?
Yeah, all along the balcony, basically.
Well, they'd probably be like oil lamps
or oil lanterns that you could turn on.
But you could basically wedge a torch in the hook, basically.
Yeah, I always want to create like a trail of light.
Just in case.
So Xanthius makes his way upstairs,
and you begin making your way down the corridor,
putting lights in here.
I'll move this over now so we can see where Xanthius is.
You can all see Xanthius.
He's lit up.
You can look up into the balcony.
You can see him making his way.
It's just a balcony and an open second floor.
Yeah, it looks down.
There's like a railing, but it looks down.
There's a third floor above.
And then there's stairs that lead up into the master bedroom, yes.
As you can see on the floor plan.
I can see it.
I've thought of it.
Yeah, Xanthius, when you get up
and you're kind of making your way down the corridor
along the balcony here,
can you make a perception check for me, please?
Oh, don't make me do that.
Perception shaming me.
One.
Not a natural one.
An unnatural one.
You... You got minus one?
Yeah, I do have minus one perception.
Minus one perception.
When you are moving closer,
this door, you swear, Xanthius,
opens.
I can't open it, but...
The door...
And you...
Did you...
Was there a noise in there?
It sounded like a noise in there? Sounded like a noise
like something scraping inside.
While I'm doing this
is anyone else like
coming up with me?
I'm fine with that.
You're fine with
I'm fine with you doing that.
Me on my own?
Yeah.
I think you can come up
with Xanthius
if Xanthius is going up towards her.
I mean yeah
I did say to everyone like
I'm just going to go up here and do this thing I just don't know if anyone else is coming with or if they Daisy's too scared. If Xanthius is going up towards her. I mean, yeah, I did say to everyone, like,
I'm just going to go up here and do this thing.
I just don't know if anyone else is coming with.
Daisy's too scared.
You're staying down there?
My bad.
You're just going to stay down there, Rowan?
Gruff?
Yeah, Gruff would come with you.
You're my ward. I'll take the lead.
I'll be ahead.
You're my sweet boy.
You're my ward, boo.
Yeah, in that case, I'll turn to everyone else.
Did anyone else hear the noise in that room?
The door.
As the two of you get up there,
can you guys make perception checks for me as well, please?
Gruff and Ophelia.
Rowan, you're staying down with Daisy.
Eight.
16.
16.
Gruff, yeah, you didn't hear anything.
You're just like, no, I didn't hear a noise.
Can't imagine it.
Ophelia, you think you can hear something coming up above
in the master bedroom.
Oh, in the master bedroom.
I think she's here.
In this room?
Upstairs.
Oh, so don't go into this room.
I think she's trying to shut you out. Perhaps. Maybe lure you in.
Okay, I'll go to close that door. I'm not going in there.
Don't just mean her no harm, just be gentle and kind.
Gentle and kind? Welcoming?
Yes. Well, welcoming in her house.
Although she'll be welcoming us, yes.
Do you think she'd like some fish? Maybe, she might do.
Do we continue upwards then?
I have just one more torch I want to place.
Yes, of course, yes.
Just me going upstairs.
Up here?
Oh, you want to go all the way up?
So is there a...
Is that wise?
Is there a, there is a staircase staircase and then almost a landing just before
it goes into that room right it goes up and then it immediately turns into this room up here so
there's like a little way up and then it turns in a door there or is it just yeah there's a door
there yeah so you know she's up there and you're going to go up there yourself? Light will help.
If not, in talking to the ghost, it will help our minds stay calm.
The place is illuminated.
She'll probably blow it out as soon as you bring it up there.
Ghosts do that?
I would.
If this was my house that I was haunting, bringing a bright bloody light into my room.
How loudly are you talking, Gruff?
He probably doesn't have a whisper, does he?
I'd say probably normal level. Yeah, normal level, like not unperturbed.
Whisper you purr.
That noise of Felia stops.
Hang on, wait.
It stopped.
Gruff and Daisy downstairs.
Rowan. Rowan.
Sorry, Rowan and Daisy.
Could just be the wind.
Like, there's a bit of a wind outside now.
You can hear it kind of, ooh.
The rain.
The shutters on the two windows nearest to you
in the corner just...
Nope.
I run upstairs.
I go with him.
So if you go...
These two come running.
It's very spooky downstairs.
I don't want to be down there anymore.
I mean, they're running, so they make a ton of noise.
What is it?
What happened?
There's like wind and everything.
The shutters are going...
If I look down, it's just the shutters.
Shutters are closed.
Well, they're closed.
Okay, we need to stay calm.
Much more calm than we are now.
If it was just the wind blowing them, then that's just the wind.
I imagine, by the way, in all of this,
Percival is continuing his job,
and he's straightening out the chairs,
and he's just going about his normal business, unless there's anything you would like him to be doing otherwise.
I think, yeah, I feel he would probably command Percival
to stop and hold fire for the minute.
So he's just stood downstairs.
Just like out of, just tucked out of the way for now.
So in the corner of the room,
there is just this like robed shadow
just stood in the corner.
Not creepy at all.
Facing away.
He's like facing the corner. Not creepy at all. Facing away. He's like facing the corner.
Oh, my.
I like to imagine like,
Gruff's pretty cool about everything,
but every time he walks past,
he's like, oh, bloody.
Every now and then he checks for more commands,
so he does turn around slowly.
You see the skull face.
You're okay, Percival.
You're okay.
Big thumbs up.
Boom, thumbs up.
Goes back, goes back to the corner.
Okay, could you ask him to at least face outwards?
It's a bit disconcerting.
Sorry, okay, sorry.
Could you face out just a little bit, Percival?
Turns around.
Just this skull, like half of the lower skull in the hood,
just there, ominantly in the corner.
I don't think that's better.
Can ghosts be scared?
I mean, that would scare a ghost.
If I was a ghost, I'd be scared of that, but okay.
Ophelia, when do you want to start talking?
We should give the tavern back.
We don't need to leave here.
How much of an insult would that be to the Duke
if we just hand this back?
I don't think it would be unexpected, to be honest.
They said that basically nobody wanted it.
That's true.
Okay.
We did our best.
Did we?
Yeah.
We've made maybe 16 steps.
That was so far beyond my best, you don't even know.
Exorcists from Bright Shadow Cathedral couldn't deal with this.
Exorcists from Bright Shadow Cathedral couldn't... couldn't deal with this. Exorcists from Bright Shadow Cathedral couldn't find what Ophelia found.
Oh, true.
That's already an improvement. We're doing better.
We will get to the bottom of this, don't worry. Just...
But to get to the bottom, we have to go up.
Well, we could just wait for her to come to us.
I think she already knows we're here.
Exactly, so we don't have to go up there.
We can wait for her to come down to us.
But if those items are in that room up there,
it might be useful in putting her to rest,
which means we might need to go get them.
Or at least it might be the place in which we have to put her to rest.
Right? Any heard noises upstairs?
I did. they've stopped.
Footsteps or?
Moving around.
Yeah, it was like a moving around,
like a person pacing around the room.
Like that kind of creak of a floorboard,
scuff of like a boot on wood.
Would it be better if it looked like
only one of us was going to speak to them,
but we're all there in the stairway, if they need help.
Well, Velia's been speaking to them all day.
Yes, I think it shouldn't be me.
I can go speak to her, it's,
to reintroduce myself. If you must,
I think, yes, okay.
Okay, you sound like,
you sound like you've been trying to make friends all day.
I don't know if that goes a long way
to helping with ghost friendliness.
Well, I just know that the realm of shadows is very much a thing,
and you just treat them as you would treat each other.
They're just another person.
They're just in a different realm of existence.
That's a good point, actually.
I'm thinking for Ophelia, because the spirits that you know
have voluntarily become that way as part of the house,
as part of a thing for the Greyfire.
It's a reward, right?
How would Ophelia feel perhaps thinking
that this person is trapped as a spirit
and they didn't choose that?
Like this was something that they are,
this is against their wishes almost.
It's kind of upsetting to Ophelia,
like being turned against your will.
But then, yeah, she's bitten people, so.
But, yeah.
So yeah, is the plan,
is Ophelia gonna make her way up on her own?
Did you wanna put a light down here as well, Xanthias?
Or are you?
If there's a place to put it at the top of the staircase.
I think before the...
There is a, just here on the corner here,
is a sconce.
So at the bottom of the stairs to the cellar.
As you approach this door,
everyone's following, right?
I mean, I would follow after Ophelia,
so I think I'd just overtake Xanthias
and just shut the door.
Sure. Sure.
Nope.
So it does kind of just lightly swing,
like something could have been anything, a breeze or anything.
Xanthius goes towards it, and as Xanthius approaches it,
so Gareth, you're kind of behind.
Ophelia coming up behind you as well.
Prone as well at the end, so he's kind of wedging himself in between.
And then you close.
Do I see anything in the room itself?
Do you glance in the room? Give me a perception check.
Perception check, please.
I'm not going in.
Good to know.
It's a little dark, right?
Natural 20.
He's got a torch.
19.
19.
You glance in.
And you see nothing.
It's just the dark shadows of the bed,
a broken, like, dresser, the broken window.
You don't see anything.
Okay, good.
Yep, close the door.
Gruff will just reach out and go,
behave yourself, and shut the door.
Interesting.
Are you talking to Xanthius or the ghost?
I'm talking to the door.
The door. And then, Ophelia, you I'm talking to the door. The door.
And then Ophelia, you are going up into the bedroom.
Yeah.
And then Rowan and Daisy, where are you guys?
Are you staying back here?
No.
Rowan is rushing up to make sure he's not the last.
I'm following.
Oh, and a nice line.
All right.
What a lovely little line.
It's like Rowan pushed past Gruff
so he's not at the back.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Excuse me.
Watch out. Watch out. Yeah, I, yeah. Excuse me. Watch out, watch out!
Yeah, I'll be halfway up the stairs as well.
Like, I don't wanna leave Ophelia up there alone.
Almost had me on the railing there.
Xanthius.
Yes?
It's my hooded lantern.
Oh, thank you.
Here's my torch.
Well, you've put your torch in the,
oh, you were carrying it, weren't you?
I had spares and I was-
You can put that at the top.
Oh, okay.
Do you not want it? Yeah.
There's not a sconce at the top of the stairs.
There's one right down here,
but there's not one on the top of the stairs.
I can put it on the floor or something, right?
A torch on the...
The lantern you get down.
But Ophelia, you...
It's not a problem anymore.
We don't have an inch.
Ophelia is the one who goes to the top.
As you reach the top, you kind of go up a short step,
there's a little landing, there's another few short,
and then it turns, there's a few short steps,
and then a door.
You know you left that door open.
It is not open.
It is closed.
I think Ophelia would just gently knock on the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
Uh, hello?
Is it okay if I come in? It's Ophelia from earlier.
Okay, I will.
That's okay.
If you're not ready to talk to us, that's okay.
We'll be ready when you are.
Do we have a name or anything?
Oh, did we not mention it earlier?
Tyria.
Tyria.
Well, Medrick or Adler.
I was just wondering if we mentioned this to Ophelia before.
I don't want to say the name while I'm halfway up the stairs to this room.
It's what I'm saying.
Oh, okay.
We don't know if it is her.
I will whisper to Ophelia.
Tyria.
Tyria Medrick? Okay. We don't know if it is her. I will whisper to Ophelia,
Tyria Medrick?
Or maybe Tyria Adler? Adler.
That was her original name.
Okay.
Tyria Adler.
You say the name.
The door gently swings open and you look in. Faint moonlight coming in through the broken windows that face out onto the street. A little bit of ambient light from
the city, from the town filtering in as well. You see the broken bed, the broken wardrobe, and the broken dresser with the
shattered mirror where you had laid the brush and the ring. When you first glance in, Ophelia,
you just see the brush hovering in the air as if passing through hair. And as you look,
as if passing through hair.
And as you look,
the shape begins to form of a woman brushing and brushing.
Then she turns
and you see a woman whose face
is so heavily distorted and mutilated from scars,
as in torn and slashed apart,
completely unrecognizable,
her clothing, torn and bloody,
one single eye still usable in the torn face.
Hello.
Hello?
This kind of gargling noise just coming from her mouth.
What do you do?
Ophelia will look back to the others.
Rowan's gone.
We can't, we're not seeing that. Where do you go to, Rowan? I'm too far. I just go to the edge of the steps. Rowan's gone. We can't, we're not seeing that.
Where do you go to, Rowan? I just go to the edge of the steps. Okay. As in, like,
the other steps.
Oh, Raggy.
Yeah, you book it. So Daisy and Gruff,
you just see Rowan
fucking bullet. Like, he just goes.
Xanthius, you're behind,
none of you can see in the room this,
because it's like a harsh angle.
You see Ophelia at the top of the stairs.
The door just opens on its own,
and Ophelia's like, hello?
Like, speaking to this bush.
I mean, she's obviously talking to something.
Something in there.
I am just holding on to the back of Gruff's clothes,
just like really, really close to Gruff, basically.
Sure.
Because it feels squidgy.
Next turn's soft.
Is it okay if I come inside for a talk?
You may nod for yes, if you wish.
Is that a good idea, Ophelia?
Make a persuasion check for me, Ophelia.
With advantage, because you were being kind earlier
and sort of talking to her as you went.
Bro, fate dies.
Oh yeah.
Too late. I made one roll.
15 is my highest.
15 is your highest.
The spirit neither shakes her head or nods her head,
but is watching you.
I mean you no harm.
He's watching you.
I mean you no harm.
Puts the brush down.
Stands.
Turns. Does not walk, but just floats.
Drawing closer and closer towards you.
Lifts a hand out.
Can you make a medicine check for me, Ophelia?
As she draws within about five feet of distance.
At this point, Xanthius,
you feel an intense cold wash over you,
like as if plunged into an icy wind.
Gruff, you begin to just feel a faint sort of chill
coming from that location.
Not enough to feel like a breeze,
but it's like the air temp just drops.
16.
16.
The lantern that you are currently holding, Xanthias,
begins to sputter.
There's no reason this light should go out.
And then it's gone.
What did you get, sorry?
16.
16.
Just barely a success.
As just as she reaches,
and she's about five feet from you,
like holding her hand out like this,
kind of almost like towards you,
you can see that underneath the mass of,
her hair is all kind of disarrayed,
her robes, her dress is all torn,
you can see very clearly marks all along her neck,
and almost like it's been broken in,
and shows there's...
And then reaches out to touch you. I need you to make a charisma saving throw for me.
Oh, oh.
Oh, they're trying to say men.
Three.
You feel the oddest sensation
as this figure in a rush reaches out
and you, Ophelia, are gone.
Xanthius, all the rest of you, you don't see any of this.
And Xanthius, at most, you just see Ophelia
kind of take a step back.
Oh no.
And then Ophelia turns at the top of the stairs
and looks down.
Ophelia? Did down. Ophelia?
Where is he?
And that's where we're gonna end today's session.
Amazing, of course, Rhi is the one to get possessed.
Oh yeah.
I was like, I want Percival to get possessed.
Don't worry about that,
sweet boy.
