Starting point is 00:02:10 Welcome back to Eros and Hyrolers. Last time, the party have travelled to the Astral Plane, to an abandoned facility in a large debris field, and met with an Ultraloth named Zax Ravus, hoping to barter for plans of one of Calus Valkyrian's battleship schematics. With the schematics, they will be able to strike a blow to the enemy of Erois and rescue their young friend Bala. Nova Vija also discovers that the Fiend has a piece of the legendary Eterna Tiangong, whom she has forged a pact with.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Sadly, the Ultraloth proves to be untrustworthy and attempts to ambush the party, hoping to hand them over to Calus. The party fight off a pair of Mesoloth goons and strange planar creatures in a cave system, before storming Zax Ravis' ship to recover the schematics and the Shard of Tiangong. A fight ensues, and thanks to channeling some temporary temporal magic, Nova manages to turn the tide dramatically in the party's favor. And we begin in the action as the battle continues. To give the podcast listeners a narrative setup, you are all inside the main hold of a silvery metallic astral ship.
Starting point is 00:03:33 The surfaces are not polished like a mirror, but reflective. Lights bouncing off it in strange means. And it is elaborately decorated with silk, rich silk fabrics, strange metal furniture and doorways leading into various corridors and rooms. A large wall of fire has been conjured, splitting the room partially down the middle and to one side, separating Aayla, Nova, and a suit of animated armor from the rest of the party, who chase down the Ultraloth, Zax Ravis.
Starting point is 00:04:03 And that is pretty much where we begin at the top of a brand new round. Before Ayla takes a turn, a lair action will take place. Ayla and Nova, you see... 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 60. You see a flicker as a flash of magic seems to come into existence.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Quill, Lucius, and Sentry. Sentry, you only see partial of this. Zax Ravis flickers and flashes for a moment and then seems to just return to his previous position as there now appear to be two Zax Rises on either side of the wall of fire uh the wall of fire cannot be seen through it is opaque which means that you cannot see to the other side of it um the flames are currently facing out towards ayla nova and the animated armor uh and yeah that is what you see happen um Right. Then we begin at the start of the round with Ayla,
Starting point is 00:05:07 who is currently restrained by a strange thin beam that has conjured sort of like heavy weights that are kind of holding you in place. But you have a suit of animated armor beside you and also a roaring wall of fire that radiates painful heat over your body. What would you like to do? If I
Starting point is 00:05:28 move here, am I still in that? You are currently restrained. You cannot move your spear. I can't move at all. The last round, this beam hits you. At the end of your turn, it will go away. It's like a restraining, a holding
Starting point is 00:05:43 beam, which is locking you in place. The Incredibles. You can still attack, you are just at disadvantage. Am I already raging? I guess so. Yes, you are raging. All your damage should be tracked, everything should be in place. Bloody hell.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Yep. I'm down there. I'll just attack away. The animated suit of armor does not look like it has much left in it basically. 23 to hit
Starting point is 00:06:20 on the first one. 23 will hit. 16 to hit on the next one. 23 will hit. 16 to hit on the next one. The second one does not hit. However, it might be enough. 16 points of damage on the hammer. And a dex saving throw. Dex save, please.
Starting point is 00:06:44 That is a whopping 2, which is a failure. And it's extra damage now, isn't it? So eight lightning damage. So with one hefty swing, the hammer caves in a part of the metal chest plate of the animated suit of armor. It's still standing, though it looks ready to collapse at any second.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And then with just a kind of scream or primal shout lightning bursts from your hands into its chest and you watch as it flies across the room and collapses into a pile of just pieces of metal smashed pieces what kind of a save is it to get out of this
Starting point is 00:07:20 it's not a save it just automatically at the end of your turn it will go away however you are going to take some damage from the wall of fire automatically at the end of your turn it will go away however you are going to take some damage from the wall of fire automatically at the end of your turn as well um but next turn you'll be able to move as normal uh so when the wall appears each creature uh so that's where you each creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of that side or moves through it for the first time takes the same damage. Yeah, so it's 5d8 of damage.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I don't believe you get a saving throw. Fuck, you know. It is some nasty 5d8. Do I get any danger sense for that? You would have when it was first. I think I rolled it. You didn't take any damage when it first activated because that's a saving throw.
Starting point is 00:08:02 But there's no save when you're close to it. It just deals the damage to anybody that's within the radius of it, I believe, or moves through it. So that's 22 fire damage, as you are scorched by this side of flames. But you'll be able to move to the next turn. It does.
Starting point is 00:08:21 It's almost like he knew that restraining you and conjuring this wall of fire is a good combo. Nova, Vija, your turn. You are not restrained. Yeah. So I'm just thinking about the fact that Zax has apparently appeared on the other side now. Yes, on your side, yes.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Would, like, since the beginning of this encounter, would Nova have that sort of connection to Tiangong and know that this was perhaps wrong? I'm just trying to work out. I would say, given that this is a combat round, you would need to spend time, like, to focus. Like, you've always, when you've done this before, you actually have to concentrate quite heavily on Tiangong
Starting point is 00:09:02 and establishing that bond. So you could do that, but it's probably going to be, you know establishing that bond so you could do that but it's probably going to be you know like an action to to do that like to focus and determine whether or not uh that's real or not you don't know okay and this wall of fire has is completely there's nothing just looking at the map um there's no like entranceway or anything that i can kind of go around or go through technically there is there is a very narrow five feet gap at the very end of it yeah just your uh right hand side um yes but by all accounts and purposes she's just seen zack's ravels appear in front of her yes she has um and the wall of fire only deals damage if you end your turn or try
Starting point is 00:09:46 and move through it yes okay um in the case in that case in terms of not wanting to metagame it um i'm gonna just shout to the team um we must get the sword we need to get the sword before they go before they before they teleport
Starting point is 00:10:01 um and then can i move i'm gonna move away from the wall it's 10 foot isn't it 5 10 yeah it's basically anything within 10 feet of it is gonna take the damage so i'm away from i'm 10 foot away from it okay uh and then i guess i'll eldritch blast um this second sax Ravus that's appeared near us. Sure. So that is... Go for it. First, this is 15 to hit, and the second beam is a 17 to hit.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Yep, cool. Roll damage for the first one. So that is... Oh, God. Sorry, I haven't used Eldritch Blast in a while. 1d10. Okay. 1d10, nine points of damage.
Starting point is 00:10:46 So as the first blast connects with Zaxxaravis, you watch as the image of Zaxxaravis collapses into just fragments of light as the illusion and the hologram is dispelled as the attack hits it. So technically, you still have a second beam, but there are no targets that you can see to target with it. But yeah, you just blast it apart and dispels the illusion that was being projected there.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Can I just shout? No! No! Where are they? Where are they? Can you see them? Sure. Yep. You do so. But that will be for your friends to decide what they do. Zax Ravis, on their turn,
Starting point is 00:11:27 will pull out a small vial from a belt and they will drink a potion. Quaff. Could you say quaff in the future? They will quaff a potion as a bonus action because we've always said drinking a potion is a bonus action on your turn. Feeding it to somebody else is an action.
Starting point is 00:11:47 Getting to 29 points back. As he consumes a superior healing potion. It's consumed. It's a space potion. It is a space potion. Astral potion. Then he charges towards Quill. You see, sorry, they charge towards Quill. You see, sorry, they charge towards Quill. They draw forth the black, crystal blue,
Starting point is 00:12:07 glowing rapier of the Shard of Tiangong. But before they strike you, they turn to look at Lucius. And Lucius, you watch as their eyes begin to sparkle and glisten, caught with a myriad of colors and patterns. Waving motions as these huge, silvery spherical eyes try to hypnotize you. I need you
Starting point is 00:12:32 to make a wisdom saving throw. This is a charm effect. You do have advantage because you're an elf. That's right. You get a plus three too. I know because he is not within... Oh, he is within ten feet. Yes, you're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Correct. I thought he was a bit further away 13 13 even with centuries aura trying to instill your mind and and giving you a strength you you just feel your mind turn to a clouded fog
Starting point is 00:13:01 um as you are currently charmed and whilst you are charmed you are stunned by this effect that means the uh the elemental bane uh has dropped on him which means he's no longer not resistant to cold you are incapacitated so yes you lose concentration yep so you watch as your energy the concentration in your spell just collapses as you just feel your body go slack and limp and you just stand there for a moment um you just hear a voice kind of echoing in your mind just be still be calm zax ravis may let you live as these thoughts begin to cloud over and then quill he stabs you three times Three times? Yep So elegant
Starting point is 00:13:47 First one Is a 14 to hit No Plus 11 14 9, that would be a plus 9 there, Chris Trott 11 would have made it a 6 21
Starting point is 00:14:03 To hit you, Quillek Adkalar. He's thinking, do I shield? Yeah. That's 8 points of piercing damage. As one strike, you manage to deflect off your armor. The second strike pierces into your little hollow bird bones. And the next one is a 24. Ah, shit.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I'll take that hit as well. That is going to be 11 points of damage. Do you have any concentration spells up? So I have Shield of Faith. Rhiannon, do you remember if that was Sentry that cast that on me? I believe it was. No, I think you cast that on yourself because I cast one on Lucius
Starting point is 00:14:43 earlier. Ah, I think. Yes that on yourself. I cast one on Lucius earlier. Ah, that's right. Yes. Okay, in that case, I do. So, double concentration check. Yep, two constitution saving throws. The DC is 10. So, you fail. I think the first one fails.
Starting point is 00:14:56 So, Shield of Faith goes. Two AC. Wonderful. And that is everything. That's like a full turn for Zaxxaravis because that was a bonus action move and an action Lucius you are stunned I'm sorry to say
Starting point is 00:15:10 that you are no this is until the end of Zax's next turn so you are just out for this turn as your mind is just clouded by this beautiful swirling image that you saw in their eyes as it comes over you.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Quilek Adkalar. Okay. So I want to get away from this nerd. I don't want him to hit me anymore. Can I? Yeah, I'll back up. So I'm kind of... If I'm on this side of the wall 10 feet doesn't do any damage uh he will get or they will get an attack opportunity against you okay well i may as well move like a little bit then um 13 no it doesn't hit me
Starting point is 00:16:03 and can i they swipe through the air their attack going wide I see you dart away can I lightning lure the sword it's in his hand I'm gonna have to say it would be extremely difficult to do so because he's holding it
Starting point is 00:16:24 it's you're not trained at using it the spell is Extremely difficult to do so because he's holding it. You're not trained at using it. The spell is not as common. I'd say if you try it, is it a saving throw on Lightning Lure? It's a strength save, yeah. If he rolls a one, I will say that he loses the grip on it and you grab the sword instead of his arm.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Okay, I mean, if I know it's extremely unlikely, then I'll go with instead I want to... You know, this is why things like Battlemaster fighters can actively disarm because it's a trained thing to try and disarm somebody. The lightning would wrap around the blade, but he'd have a really strong grip to kind of pull it back.
Starting point is 00:17:00 I'd say, yeah, you want like a one. Yeah. In that case, I'll cast Entangle like a one. Yeah in that case our classes Entangle with my dusk will they ring on him? He needs to make a strength Dave I know you can tell that what kind of area does that affect? Is that anything that might hit you guys or oh? It's 20 foot square I can I can position it so it's like you know here 20 foot square Yeah, you can yeah, I can kind of draw something there as well.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And I know he can teleport and whatever, but like whatever. There you go. So you conjure it, and he has to make a what save? Strength saving throw. 17.
Starting point is 00:17:43 This is a magical effect so they do get advantage with their magic resistance so first saving throw is a I yeah that's a 21 they get oh he's got a lot of strength actually he's saving
Starting point is 00:18:00 through damn I didn't expect that plus three yeah yeah you can see that their body, Zac's body is quite muscular. This green pallid flesh is quite well defined. You can see quite burly muscles on their body.
Starting point is 00:18:16 I was expecting just a weedy little nerd caster, you know, like me and Lucius. Yeah, no. Sadly, they are a buff person. Yeah, no. Sadly, they are a buff person. Oh yeah, Nova. Minus one strength Nova. That's everything. I've got a bonus
Starting point is 00:18:34 section as well, but I don't want to shillaylay. Okay. Sentry. Why do you keep mentioning that? It's a spell on my ring. I can't get rid of it sent you a move between Quill and Zaxxaravos
Starting point is 00:18:50 and then I shall use my flamelance upon him oh okay so yeah just a line directly out from you it's not going to strike anybody else what do I have to do so that is a DC dex save DC 13 going to strike anybody else. What do I have to do? That is a DC deck save.
Starting point is 00:19:06 DC 13. And this technically isn't a magic spell. Magical effects, though, it does. They get magic resistance. It's a scientific reaction. Still magic. So, yep.
Starting point is 00:19:21 There's the first one. 23. 23 on the savings throw. Oh, no! That was 20 and 18. 23. 23 on the saving throw, so half damage. No problem. Half damage. 3d10 halved.
Starting point is 00:19:38 And you can see that they also appear to be slightly resistant to fire, so that's even less, I'm afraid, as the fire washes over their fiendish body. Do they need to make a concentration save for the wall? They will for the wall of fire, yes. They absolutely will. That is going to be an 18. So they succeed on their concentration.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Anything else, sentry? So that was move... And then I think I'll bonus action cast ensnaring strike on my sword, please. Okay, so you cast Ensnaring Strike. Perfect. Ayla, back at the top of a new round. Actually, sorry, there is a lair action before that.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Quill and Sentry. Burn. You both burn. You're dead. And technically Luciusus uh i need lucius quill and century to make a dexterity saving throw uh you see zach's points at space um and a tiny light in the floor begins to blink rapidly and then explodes uh lucius you automatically fail deck saving throws. Yeah, I'm afraid so. Fifteen. Fifteen, Century.
Starting point is 00:20:50 That is... Natural one. So all three of you fail. You take five points of fire damage. I fail as well. You are knocked prone. You do, yeah. This thing blinks. You don't expect this tiny blinking light
Starting point is 00:21:05 And then suddenly it explodes in flame And you are knocked prone By the force of the blow As the lair action that round Alrighty Then it is Ayla's turn You are fully able to move, you are no longer restrained Okay
Starting point is 00:21:21 There is a wall of fire Right in front of you And you can hear the sounds of battle coming from the other side of it um so you run along and go down this tiny gap jesus christ you guys um yeah
Starting point is 00:21:38 hmm so you can see this patch of wild growth that quillik has created um you can see this patch of wild growth that Quillik has created. You can see Zax Ravis threatening... Where is that ground? It's the green square.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Can you guys not see that? I might have put it on the wrong layer. Are you guys having fun there? Yeah. Sorry. Oh, so Sentry went into that thing as well? Yeah. I think it's just difficult to reign. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Shit. Yeah, I can't really do much, so I just kind of want to be away from this fiery death wall. You don't want to dash into it? I will... Well, then I can't hit him, though.
Starting point is 00:22:40 You can't hit him from where you are, currently. I know, but I could next turn. Can you throw your hammer? I can't hit him from where you are currently. I know, but I could next turn. Sure. Can you throw your hammer? I can't. I'd hit Sentry. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I know why you reckless attack, but I'm just saying I don't always want to do it. So anyone who nags me for it, it makes me want to do it less. Anyway. This is why it's good, because

Starting point is 00:24:18 So you roll another d10. So it's 10 plus another d10. Because you've got brutalutal Critical as well, which is what changes it. So 10 plus 1 plus another d10 for Brutal Critical. So roll another d10. Oh, my God. Wow.
Starting point is 00:24:37 Oh, my God. So plus 8. So that's 20 damage just for the hammer. Now the max of 46 is 12, 24. so plus 8 so that's 20 damage just for the hammer now the max of 46 is 12, 24 44 points of total damage although actually lightning damage is resistance
Starting point is 00:24:53 this is why I've got to fucking work this out so 20 base damage for the hammer and 24 damage for the lightning which is half to 12 and roll another 46, because this is the critical damage. The critical damage is maxed, and then you roll it again.
Starting point is 00:25:11 We have custom crit rules for anybody who's new, by the way. We do max damage of the dice plus the dice again. So another 46 lightning damage. KT. That would have been 20 plus 24
Starting point is 00:25:24 plus another 46. There's another 13, but that is halved to six because of the lightning resistance. So yeah, you swing the hammer and one powerful blow, it rockets out of your hand. And at first, Zaxxaravus tries to dodge it to the side, but with a force of will, you kind of force the hammer to lean curving slightly
Starting point is 00:25:46 as it just cracks them right in their elongated head, snapping their neck to the side as lightning courses down their body, causing intense scarring and deep wounds all over their body before the hammer snaps back into your hands as it flies along its trajectory. And you see Zax Ravis, like, holding
Starting point is 00:26:05 their head, looking thoroughly, thoroughly beaten by this attack. Almost all of the healing that they'd received from the potion having been... How much damage was that? So that would have been, in total, without the resistance, it would have been 20, 24, 44, plus another
Starting point is 00:26:21 13, 57 points of damage. But the resistance cuts all the lightning damage in half. Holy crap. Pretty good. Anything else? I think that's pretty much everything. Concentration check on the wall, please. That is very true. So the total damage taken there
Starting point is 00:26:38 is 20, 32, 32, 38. So the DC is half of 38, it's 15, 32 38 so the DC is half of 38 it's 15 19 so it's 19 DC constitution saving throw
Starting point is 00:26:54 which is going to be a fail so the wall of fire disappears awesome clap so a very good hit by Ayla I've been deleted too good

Starting point is 00:27:45 15, 20... Yeah, I'm gonna go in for a stab. Or am I? They could teleport! They could teleport away! No, I'm gonna go in for a stab. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25... Look, Mark's got his thinking face on. I don't like it.
Starting point is 00:28:03 And I'm gonna Tiangong, Green Flame, Blade stuff. So that is a D10. That's nine. 17 to hit with Tiangong. Is not enough. Zax Ravis, they bring up their own Shard of Tiangong and parry the blade as the two shards and sparks, blue magic flashes in great sparks and arcs
Starting point is 00:28:28 as these two shards of the same being clash against each other. While I'm clashing, can I just say through gritted teeth, you don't deserve Tiangong! And then, Tom, what do you want to say? Is parry a reaction? Because he did use a reaction on me. No, he's not parrying. That's narrative. I'm narratively describing it, not
Starting point is 00:28:52 what they say. Nice. I was just in there, Mark. You got me. I know that some monsters do have reactions called parry, but this is just a descriptive him bringing the weapon up, or them bringing up the weapon yeah nova you say that and in your mind you
Starting point is 00:29:08 hear their voice uh deserve has nothing to do with it it is all about who has the strength and guile to take uh anything else leave that is that's all you got is that all you got i'm having got emotional day I'm so I'm so
Starting point is 00:29:30 angry mmm it's a bit outnumbered here you still got some hit points left only Only five to one. It's only five to one, yeah. What's he planning? What's he thinking? Put down a sword and leave. He's going to teleport. He's going to teleport. Nah. Nah, he's not going to. There's things that, yeah, like, I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:05 There's reasons that he might not want to just completely vanish. He will. No. Absolutely not. Crash into the ground. Zaxxaravus will. He doesn't really, he's not terribly afraid of Nova in combat. Sentry does worry him, as does
Starting point is 00:30:28 Aayla. He's smart enough to know that Sentry seems to be much more resilient than that. So I think what he will do is he will... What's he going to do? They will. It's going to hurt. It's he gonna do? They will It's gonna hurt
Starting point is 00:30:46 Here it comes Here comes the pain Pain train Man this is really tough They will Turner I know I just made my decision Burn
Starting point is 00:31:03 Oh he gave up his turn. Sentry. Sentry. Just talk, Chiang Kong. They look at you and you see the same thing that Lucius did. This swirling silvery pattern
Starting point is 00:31:17 in their eyes. This kind of shifting colors. I need you to make a wisdom saving throw. Cool. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool shifting colors, I need you to make a wisdom saving throw. Cool. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool. Does this break my effect? That is a... Yours goes at the
Starting point is 00:31:32 end of his turn, basically, no matter what. 21 total. With a 9. With a 9. You feel... This mystifying aura that tries to enwrap to your mind but you the light of the matrix just dispels the fog that
Starting point is 00:31:51 begins to shroud and you see your target clear as day you see you hear like a sort of grunt of frustration as Zax will strike at Nova three times with the Shao Tien Gong. All right, after about 50, 60 feet, it becomes pitch black, and you have no idea how deep this tunnel is. Quill in your vision, it's hard to tell the distance, but it was some fair distance. He turns around and for the first time you see their brow furrow and this voice in your mind suddenly now sounds aggressive.

As they try to warp your mind and cloud it with mist and fog there's just a crack of thunder as you let the the power of Hesper flow through you into his mind into their mind as he stumbles back he just grits his teeth uh they grit their teeth and with the rapier they charge forward and attack Nova three times because Nova looks most injured.
Starting point is 01:08:07 Nova, the first strike is a 16. Doesn't hit. Tiangong pulls your arm up, deflecting the blade away as it battles against itself, trying to protect you. Starting point is 01:08:40 metagaming isn't it yeah um i would like like, can I activate Tomb of the Vistas? But I don't know. This is going to be playing to your please mark rule of call. Can I throw myself on Zax Ravos and activate the tomb so they're in the tomb with me? Here's my problem. You know I love saying yes to stuff. The problem is that I don't want this to become a thing that nova thinks that can always work like because it's kind of breaks that ability
Starting point is 01:09:11 a little bit what i would say is i will i will let him i'll let you do it zax will get a deck saving throw okay yeah does that sound fair i'm gonna tomb anyway i'm gonna tomb anyway all right but like that that would be a bonus if I could get them in with me because they see you coming and they see this ice beginning to form around you and they will throw themselves backwards in the hope of avoiding this

Starting point is 01:09:57 This obstantatious golden cloak. You grab the front of it. One hand on their wrist holding Tiangong and you just watch Quill as this sphere of ice, this chunk of raw frozen ice forms around the two of them him they're frozen in anger uh as nova surrounds it leaving the cockpit and the controls that they were controlling um they that you saw zax ravis inputting something into before are open at the front of the ship ready for you to uh rush to if you need to.
Starting point is 01:10:28 Lucius, so they don't get their second attack as well. Their last attack. Lucius, you are in a dark, dark ladder tunnel. I've got a little jump in lights. I'm going to continue moving down. However, I'm going to use absorb elements as a reaction. And can I use it if there were an explosion and a shaft of fire were to come down this tunnel i would like to absorb elements on fire okay sure and protect everyone from the elements absorb you don't need to ready an action to do that absorb elements is
Starting point is 01:10:57 a reaction and you get to pick what type of damage it is yeah so yeah you can absolutely do that that's a cool thing so you kind like, you're like last on the ladder and you're holding your body ready to try and absorb as much as you can. Yeah. Cool. Quillic. This is the big one. Yeah, I mean, co-pilot Quill,
Starting point is 01:11:17 he kind of knows what the ship is trying to do, right? I would say this ship is different. The symbols are written in a language you don't understand in infernal abyssal but i would say that quill's intelligence and knowledge of magic is enough that the little pad that is currently now just resting on the cockpit is counting down um and it looks like there's not a lot of time left on it there's still some but but you could try and disable it it's an arcana check if you want to try and stop it
Starting point is 01:11:48 if you pick up the pad and start inputting glyphs and symbols I mean I'll have to try something while he's in a tomb of a vistas I can't do anything to him so yeah I will try and figure out this pad nova style

Starting point is 01:13:54 yeah it's like a little way to describe it would be almost like a little not quite rowing boat larger than that like a small yacht but it has like thin metal runners um it has a giant sky sail um similar to some of the ships that you well the dusk willow ship that you saw before it has like a large silvery sail um and it has a completely

Starting point is 01:18:37 I want to roll what would have occurred had the explosion gone off that would have been 112 damage. That would have taken everybody out. That would have been if you were up in the hangar.
Starting point is 01:18:54 If you were up in the hangar where it was before, you guys down here, it would have been 10d10 and a deck saving throw. That's insta-death for me. My max HP is 114. So no insta-death for me. Me too. My max HP is 114. So no insta-death, but down.
