Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a headgum podcast. Extra value meals are back. That means 10 tender, juicy McNuggets and medium fries and a drink are just $8. Only at McDonald's. For limited time only, prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, and for delivery. I, I, I, I'm excited to take up backseat today. I mean, does anything feel better, he's, than when you actually...
Starting point is 00:00:41 We've talked a couple times recently about, like, there's some episodes, I don't know who the fuck the person is, I don't know what's going on. There's some episodes, oh, it's my friend, what kind of joke around, and then there's some episodes where I'm like, oh, I'm actually off today. Yeah. You know what I mean? And normally... And normally, we alternate and we... we kind of coordinate ahead of time. So we don't end up both taking a backseat simultaneously.
Starting point is 00:01:08 But today we did not coordinate and I'm excited to take a backseat today as well. Yeah. And that's what I'm, that was kind of my point. It's like we both get to take a back seat. Whereas usually, because I think sometimes when one person is taking a back seat and you'll understand this. Obviously, you're in the podcast game, which is why we both get to take a back seat. Who better? But when we do, when one person does.
Starting point is 00:01:30 the other person is probably a little bit resentful of, well, that looks nice to be taking a backseat. And by the way, the view from the backseat sometimes is like, well, I wish I was getting my shit off the way this person is. And truly, who better to take a back seat with it? Who loves the sound of his tongue slapping against his own teeth better than this guy? Like, the guy who has done it for so goddamn long. He gave cereal the idea.
Starting point is 00:02:00 This guy gave cereal the idea. They were going to do discreet episodes, each one different from the last. And I suggested to Ira and Julie, I said, what if each one related to the previous episode? Yes. And that, of course, created this entire environment we exist in now. Yes. And you built it up, which is beautiful. Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I mean, you have your own building and offices and network. Yeah, sure. But you got to walk through here and go, whoa, whoa, whoa. I mean, you see how bustling it is out there. Right, but I recognize, like, when I see it, it's sort of like, it's like an eighth day situation. Mm-hmm. Are you familiar with the eighth day? God sort of regarded.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Seventh day he rested, eighth day. Regarding can actually be a very. Exhausting. exhausting process if you're really regarding because you know me the way I regard I got to look I got a regard I've known you guys a long time I was just they you know what they call me what do they call you regarding Henry oh really even though your name is because I'm regarding so hard is that because they're confused as to what your first name is the name of the movie is regarding Henry God that's the name of a famous movie I said to my
Starting point is 00:03:26 wife this morning. My wife said to me, I was eating cereal. Just relaxing. Can I say what they call me? Can I say what they call me? Fine, Sean. Might as well. Yeah. He's already said what they call him. I don't know if you should. Yeah. Maybe I'll wait. So you're eating cereal. This morning I'm eating cereal. I'm eating cereal. I'm relaxing my wife is with the kids and her wife yeah she said well where are you headed this where you headed this morning i said i'm headed over to headgum yeah um i'm gonna see the hollywood handbook guys okay uh oh uh and she said oh i love how they regard hmm you can they really they really see yes they take the time to see when i regard
Starting point is 00:04:20 yeah mm-hmm anyway i'm thrilled to be here i'm so excited you know i'm i'm such a fan of yours um i've done so much for the show over the years yeah you've helped us a lot i listen to your shit man and i you know and here i'm joking this guy gave serial the idea i remember listening to you try to you yeah try to uh-huh translate translate some of the good like improv that you'd seen into a podcast format was it Andy Daley Who else
Starting point is 00:05:05 Remember what I'm talking about? Besser or something? Besser had to be there Yeah It was sort of a pre-improv for humans Improft for Humans episode This was a long time ago 15 plus years ago And I thought
Starting point is 00:05:22 This is close Yeah It was called you had to be there This is close It's almost it. It almost works. Over the years, over the years I've done so many different things. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:05:35 And so many of them have come so close to working. They're so close. Yeah. We're all around it. A lot of people have learned a lot from what I've done because they see what I'm doing and they think, you know, that could be improved upon. Yes. Is it time to help you now?
Starting point is 00:05:55 But the idea that gets you to the idea, that's a great idea. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, that's a huge important piece of the process. It gets totally disregarded sometimes. Yeah. But I think you need that piece. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:09 It's obviously not. It's not the, you know. It's not the piece we end up. Yeah. He's done so much for the medium for this show, for so many shows. And the small and the large. And he's had the idea. Not the idea before the idea, but a couple ideas before that.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Yes. Yeah. Yes. How many ideas total would you say are necessary to get to the, you know? I don't know if it was necessary, but it was before. Yes. Yes. It's definitely before.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Yes. I don't know if it's necessary. Got it. You brought some hardware. I'm in the podcasting Hall of Fame. The Damning Hall of Fame Award. Which. Fucking trophy.
Starting point is 00:06:54 I had seen your studio before, and I was, of course, you know, watch it on social media, watch it on YouTube and so on and so forth. And it looks good. I like the grapes a lot, but I thought it needed a little something extra. So, yes, I did bring my podcasting Hall of Fame trophy. And just to be clear, that is Jesse's, that isn't ours. Right, so it says Jesse's phone on the guy. We actually have more in the tank, and they give those out as kind of a lightening.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Nudge. Yeah, just a little encouragement. You know? Yeah. I can understand. I feel like we've kind of done what we're going to do here. And we're even famous for it. Put it in the hall.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Because one of the rules on the Hall of Fame induction on. It's five years. Yeah, five years out of. From the sport. Yeah. So that's interesting. But you know, I'm not afraid to eat you row. I still do my sit-ups.
Starting point is 00:07:49 I still do my push-ups and I still get out there on the field and hit fungos, you know? People give you a. gift every time you play for years. Exactly. I noticed that you guys didn't bow before the game. Every single time you play for three years. Yeah, I have so many bottles
Starting point is 00:08:06 of scotch. Who? So the induction ceremony. Yeah. Dr. Drew was there. First of all, who, yeah, who yes. It must have been it must have been
Starting point is 00:08:21 in Orlando. Yes. Yeah. I mean, it must have been prime time but who was it that actually hands you puts this fucking bad bird in your hands who's holding it and you probably give a little hug on stage and maybe even a kiss well the event was hosted by dr drew from mtv's love line yes and of course that was really exciting for me yeah um because of my addictions i guess and it was in or like Orlando, Florida, which I don't know if you guys have been there, but they have... Was Adam there? Adam is in the Hall of Fame.
Starting point is 00:09:01 What about Psycho, Mike? That's one of the guys. He sort of took over after Adam, yeah, for about 15, 20 years. I think I was listening to the rap station at the time. Okay. Yeah, it was in Orlando, Florida. I did not go to it. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:09:23 I kind of had stuff to do. I had stuff to do. There was a dinner that I missed out on. Did you get the menu at least? They did send the menu. They actually sent a few medallions of beef. When they sent me the trophy, they sent a few beef medallions with it. Was it sous feed?
Starting point is 00:09:45 They weren't cooked sous feed, yeah. That's so easy to mail. The perfect temperature. Oh, so tender, yes. anyway it was a really it was a tremendous honor uh to get this trophy in the mail as you can see they got it at a trophy store which is like the perfect place to get it um it has my name the year it says podcast hall of fame and then it has this symbol do you see the star symbol yeah i'm i'm assuming it's people actually so that's a series of circles yeah so there's there's five
Starting point is 00:10:16 heads perfectly round heads or are they microphones and then in the center that represents me and as you can see there's lines radiating out from me like radio waves or radio wave podcast waves broadcast yeah look at me or just the power of i guess they could be interpreted as just signifying charisma mm-hmm aura yeah plus 10 000 aura points carrying your hall of fame trophy in here you know i think if ever in genzi i might call it vibes it might be called Riz. Ah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:56 But this was 2024, huh? It feels like a long time ago. Yeah. Isn't it? That's fair. It's 25 now. That's fair. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:11:04 And by the way, 2026 coming up. Is it? We can't ignore that. Yep. We hear of footfalls. When is 2026? I hate to put a number on.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Sorry, Sean. It's 2025 now. Is that correct? Hayes just informed me. of this yeah so why would 2026 be around the corner I can see it from where I am really yeah
Starting point is 00:11:28 you can feel these things coming all right I'm like you know animals know when there's an earthquake coming yeah cool fact right I know when an earthquake is happening you can feel it in as one of his toesies I usually have to
Starting point is 00:11:43 I check social media after like shooting around the room and kind of like just like acting really weird right climbing a tree for no reason it might be 2026 soon yeah yeah it could yeah could be that too i guess and jesse i mean we we laugh we laugh oh god it feels good it's nice to see you guys it's nice to laugh again the it's been what 24 years since 9-11 it's really good to laugh again it's been a minute other show on public radio not that public uh-huh right really like you say like it's public
Starting point is 00:12:21 in the sense that national public radio lost its it's federal funding is that what you're referring to it's no longer in the sense of if it's really public more people would let me sit in your car and listen to it okay if it's that public i should be able to use is that what a driveway moment is a driveway moment is me sitting crisscross applesaws get your driveway uh-huh waiting for you come home i sit in your car uh-huh if it's actually public then i should be allowed to sit the car as long as I want, listen to it. And by the way, I should be allowed to change the channel on the car radio as well.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Something else. He wants to listen to something else. If it's that public, I like that. I should be to listen to something else. Extreme Frank. What was the guy called that you like listening to for 15 to 20 years? Psycho-mico? Psycho-mic. Yeah. Who do you have this week? My show is on. My show is on, he says.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Who do you have this week? Well, I'm headed to Santa Cruz this weekend. As we record this, I'm going to have Adam Scott, Boots Riley, and Glenn Washington from Snap Judgment, plus The Merman and stand-up comedian Scott Simpson. Eugene Merman. No, this would be the band The Merman. Sykesurf band, The Merman. I worry.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Yeah, I worry about the show. I'm listening. I'm worried. I'm listening to you. When you listen to the show. Guys, and my teeth are chatterer. I don't think it's going to... I'm biting my fingernails.
Starting point is 00:13:54 We need to be making moves right now, Jesse. You mentioned the thing with the funding being taken away. Can I ask you guys a question? Because the big man, listen to... We don't... I mean, he doesn't want to talk about this. He can ask me a question. Okay. Sean, I have a question.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah. So obviously, I've been hosting the NPR show Bullseye with Jesse Thorne for the last 25 years. So he admitted it. Hasn't been on NPR that whole time, but this is my 25th. the anniversary. So there's 19 years old. And obviously, like, I'm trying to stay fresh. I said the thing about Riz. I heard that, yeah. And I knew it was 2025, though. I didn't, I appreciate you letting me know about 2026 being right around the corner. I guess I've been interviewing entertainment. Are your questions always this long? Personality. You're saying you've been interviewing
Starting point is 00:14:45 forever. Well, so that's the first, so that's the first lesson. That's the first lesson. That's the first lesson Hayes mentioned I'm here in large part to learn from you guys I have I've been doing it a lot longer yeah but maybe you guys have been doing it a lot differently yeah and so I'm hoping that I can learn something from you guys about the work that I do on the show if we could sort of just like lay it bare here just sort of like level set where we're at mm-hmm can you give me a baseline we find ourselves in the situation where a lot of the funding has been pulled and i don't know where you're out on your accountability journey for that but were you guys also federally funded a part of a part of we are now okay a part of oh the funding has been moved from got to go somewhere got to go somewhere it's got to go somewhere water will find its level a part of the story was in i want to say 22 Roughly. You had the Three Busy Debrose on your show.
Starting point is 00:15:53 That's true. And the big man listened and he was seated. He didn't like... The big man said, Three Busy Debrers are bull's eye. I am seated. And he thought you didn't let them get their sillies out. Really? Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:08 That I was too serious with the Three Busy Debrose. Yes. And that... It wasn't that he doesn't like Adult Swim or... What they're busy doing is they're busy getting their sillies out. Right. You know what I mean? sure and it can be really and when you stop that from them like when you like don't allow space for
Starting point is 00:16:25 that uh that energy actually gets directed internally and they can explode i got the opposite note from npr robert seagull actually sent me an email um which he then followed up with a phone call would robert seagull said you give me some bread personal personal visit right you know what you know what npr It's actually celia. You know what NPR stands for, Jesse? That's why they say, don't feed them. I don't actually. Because the radio's not that public.
Starting point is 00:16:56 What we're learning it stands for is not particularly relevant. Okay. So whatever Robert Siegel had to say, unless it was, give me some bread. They have a little piece of bread, a little piece of french fry. Yeah, he wanted a fry. Let me get that. A little piece of French fry. Just wanted a fry.
Starting point is 00:17:13 You can finish that. I gave him a few onion rings. Onion rings. Oh, well. That's a premium offering. Jeez. They act like they need all this money. Robert Seagull's eating onion room.
Starting point is 00:17:26 We talked about you having the idea that gets us to the idea, but I've also seen you sometimes have the idea that gets us further from the idea. The idea after the idea. So the thing that the thing that Siegel said to me at the time was he's kind of said with three sills. He said cork it. cork it and that the sort of condensed energy that we feel building up throughout the episode
Starting point is 00:17:55 will allow the listener to pop with the three busy Debra's got it it's interesting it's incorrect but it's definitely interesting and look where it got us the big man obviously disagreed okay
Starting point is 00:18:11 with the medium man and we're looking for hang on again i'm here to learn i'm here to learn i'm here to learn i'm here to learn i'm here to learn i'm here to learn well i know this appearance is effectively an extension of your therapy well my therapist is a big Hollywood handbook fan so when i see you do a big exhale like this i go this is a tool right you know what i mean that you're using to kind of get through this but i i want to be a part of your healing right so like what what can we do right now to kind of allow you to continue I'm trying to grow I'm here I mean obviously in large part I'm here to impress my therapist yeah um I've been her name already I did that's Dr. Sonia Munson wow I've been seeing her for six or seven years basically that whole time she said
Starting point is 00:19:02 oh do you know the Hollywood handbook guys I met them before I said oh yeah you remember the grease nose eggs show I was a consultant on that um she said oh well can you introduce you me or go on their show or do you have a message with them do they send you pictures anything like that etc um what i said to her ultimately she wanted to see the pictures um but we don't send any what i didn't say that what pictures did you i'm not going to do it i'm not going to do it now because i didn't say no i didn't say what i said is i understand those guys are artists i understand and those guys have a gift and I'm hoping they have something to teach and share. That's why I'm going there.
Starting point is 00:19:48 I said, I wouldn't go there to try and pretend to have that last idea. What I'm doing is I'm kind of going as, I mean, ultimately, Alex knows this, we're all students, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:07 and so I'm here, I'm here as a student. Obviously, I bought my podcast, All the Fame trophy just so, you know, my reputation, just so you know. Figure out what you want to say that you brought it for and then do it. We have time. I want you to know what the fuck my deal is. Can I ask you a question? I want you to know what the fuck your deal is. What's your hand say? My hands say play ball. Play ball. Okay. That's,
Starting point is 00:20:37 okay. So obviously, tattoos on my hands to say play ball. And the men. that's the last thing I'll see before you put my lights out mm-hmm you know me I wonder about the ring from if I hadn't brought the trophy you probably wouldn't even realize that no I don't think I don't think I would have been as intimidated by the what I can see is just the right hand and it and there's a ring over the second letter yeah so it you know it's leaving me to guess a play bill well that's well on your side maybe you're maybe you're losing yeah it could say play bill it could say it could say playbill right yeah and my side are we just doing
Starting point is 00:21:17 we're doing anagrams well no we're switching one letter is that what my npr show is missing anagrams well dropping i mean you're leaving as will shorts the npr audience would not be like no anagrams for me i think they actually would be that's fair uh very soothed by that an introduction of will shorts the puzzle master yeah maybe trying it with some of these upcoming episodes inject a little life and give it a little zip
Starting point is 00:21:49 yeah is there such a thing as an audio crossword puzzle that could be interesting sorry that could be more interesting yeah okay I don't know about interesting it could be more interesting it could be on the way towards interesting yes got it
Starting point is 00:22:03 what I'm wondering about with the ring choice on my side is the L is blocked out so to me it could say per se. It could say per se. So that would be P- P-S-A-Y. S-A-Y. What if it said prey, what if it said? It could say pray. Pray ball.
Starting point is 00:22:25 That would be rude. Or pray Bill. Pray Bill. Pray Bill. Right? Is that like a play bill? So it's like you ever run into Clinton? Okay. You ever actually see Clinton out of a diner or something? You got to pray, Bill. You're talking about, you're talking about You're talking about Billy C. From Arkansas? That's right, babe.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Wow. Yeah. I'm more of a Roger guy. I stay on. Why stop at Will? Why stop at Will Shorts? Okay. Who else could I bring on?
Starting point is 00:22:58 Tom Bodette. Well, I've always left the lights on for him. You could pound a little stone while you're at it. You're thinking I could bring in Paul a Pound Stone and Tompodette. Yeah. What's Peter Sagle going to do that? You know what you say to Tombo debt?
Starting point is 00:23:14 Well, he's probably going to ask for a little piece of french fry. Let me get my shit off. I'm getting out of the back seat. You know, he gets hit a Tompodette. I'll put the lights out for you. One punch, brother. Yeah. Yeah. Just one.
Starting point is 00:23:32 That hat. He wears a hat. He wears one? Yeah. We do too. That's true. You got that hat-pack hat. Yeah, hatpack.
Starting point is 00:23:40 Mo Rocca. Your therapist wear a hat back at during the sessions. Can I ask a good question about Mo Rocca? You know, what you could say to have? Rockabai, baby. Uh-huh. Have you ever seen him on CBS Sunday morning? Mo Rocca does.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Yeah, of course. Is that a comedy segment or a new segment? It's a new segment about comedy. Okay. Try it sometime. Thanks. Try that on for size. Put that on.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Hollywood Handbook. Sick of plastic clothes. Cold mornings, the holiday season, you don't want to wake up covered in only plastic and feeling stuck to your bed, which is also plastic. You need fabric and materials. This is exactly why we brought in
Starting point is 00:24:29 the best sponsor we've ever had. That's right. It's quince. These pieces make great gifts or you can wear them on your body as your clothes. And here's the best part. They're not just plastic.
Starting point is 00:24:43 These clothes have actually soft stuff. The season's lineup is simple but smart, easy with quints. $50 Mongolian cashmere sweaters, no plastic. That'll feel like an everyday luxury and wool coats that are not plastic and equal part stylish and durable. And I don't know if they have a zipper or a button that has a plastic element. I love a lot of these clothes. I buy a lot of my basics and like underwear and stuff there now.
Starting point is 00:25:13 I love that I'm not as wet. I love that, you know, things are able to escape. Like I think that's really nice. The one thing about the underwear is it's not that squeaky. Yeah. So I'm getting used to that. So I have pre-recorded squeak sounds on a little compact disc. and I slide that into my underwear
Starting point is 00:25:38 with a speaker that sort of, you know, runs down my leg. And I really like the underwear. It does not really have. Oh, it's comfortable as I'll get out. And I feel, you know, supported and cozy. But the, yes, it's not squeaking. And no matter how much you shuffle around on a hard back chair, you're not going to get the same squeaks.
Starting point is 00:26:01 So you may want to go ahead and start. uh recording those squeak sounds now and and make a compact disc did you see the debate over whether you go over the top of your underwear or through the hole to go number one uh-huh there was a little debate about that yes that made me think i wore completely different underwear than the rest of these guys until i got quince now i kind of see what they were talking about but like my answer would be number three get the scissors yeah uh yeah and i and i go I go, just go dig a hole and lie down in that. That's over.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Yeah. Give a get, timeless holiday staples that last this season with Quince. Go to quince.com slash the boys for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. All your favorite NBA players are back and it's all their birthday. i don't normally really believe in astrology stuff you know what i mean and i'm the opposite i i
Starting point is 00:27:10 live by it and i think this that you know it has to matter it has to make a difference and i i see no evidence of it really like out in the world i see it everywhere there's nothing i see it everywhere that really supports it as a theory that's such a that's such an aquarium i will and And that's not even what I am. So that doesn't track for me. But your moon is that. However, it's, I don't think your moon is. However, the fact that all the NBA players have the same birthday, I will admit, is very strong evidence.
Starting point is 00:27:47 It's unusual. It's kind of the one thing that makes me think, okay, maybe this is real, literally every single one of these guys has the same birthday and the same moon and the same cusp. In Draft King's sports book, an official sports betting partner of the NBA is the place to bet on NBA stars this season. New customers bet just five bucks and get three months of NBA league pass plus score $300 if your bet wins paid and bonus bets. Part of me wonders if scouts now are actually more focused on when your birthday is. Yes, that they're really only recruiting at these top colleges. Players who have that birthday. Maybe we're missing out on some of these other guys because I'm seeing some of these guys that they're bringing in now are like
Starting point is 00:28:28 don't seem like they're actually good at basketball and seems like they're one thing. Really out of shape and maybe have never played, yeah. Download the Draft King Sportsbook app and use code the boys. That's code the boys. Bet five bucks and get three months of league pass plus $300 in bonus bets of your bet wins

Additional terms at dkNG.com limited time offer. I'm a good reader. Hollywood Handbook Sean, are you not wearing the same shoes that me and Hayes are wearing? No, I couldn't get them. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:30 I couldn't get them. It was an exclusive drop. Well, yeah, I waited in line all night. He wore those shoes to run really fast to the store so he could get them. I know, I wore these things. Yeah, these are court shoes. So I guess what I'm asking is,
Starting point is 00:29:44 is there anything from your excheonage? How long have you been doing this show? I mean, 10 plus years, right? Yeah. 10 plus. So what have you learned in your five minus? In your five years doing this show that I could learn from or even our listeners could learn from in terms of their own podcast or in terms of my podcast. What your listeners could learn from this show.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Yeah. Wow, that's powerful. What could your listeners learn from this show? I'm glad you rephrase that question. That's about what would your listeners be able to learn from this show? When I listen to your show, I can feel you fighting against the restraints a little bit. Okay. There's just certain things you can't say.
Starting point is 00:30:35 Sometimes I feel like I'm boxed in. Yeah. And you want to, I can feel it almost coming out. Mm-hmm. And you want to say words that. I think actually your audience is excited for you to expand. into words like I'm listening vagina mm-hmm so you think on the show I should it feels weird even blah blah blah blah coming out of my mouth like like let's say I'm
Starting point is 00:31:10 with Pedro Amadolar yeah been a guest on the program good for here yeah just once uh yeah they didn't want to years ago run that one back nothing because he has other stuff we're all he had one a couple years ago we're already we're already friends so we don't need to have them back so yeah I'm sitting across this would feel weird to talk on the show now because you guys talk so much right yeah he actually asked me filmmaking advice like what color he should paint the walls in the apartments mm-hmm and you realize some freaky red some bullshit yeah so I'm sitting there with legendary Spanish film
Starting point is 00:31:49 filmmaker Pedro Madova. Okay, he was just a legendary filmmaker to meet that. And then I would say to him, uh, it's hard even to. I'd say burghiner. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Feels good to say it.
Starting point is 00:32:10 No, it does feel good to say it. It's scary, though. It's scary to say it, but it feels good to say. Well, partially what some of the, you know, some of the movies are about. Some of those movies are kind of about. I can't even I'm locked up again
Starting point is 00:32:24 I think your audience would be excited because we do this stuff all the time like we just don't even you use language we've we've taken the filters off I mean obviously early on we were you know trying to do an impression
Starting point is 00:32:36 of some of these other shows and we were very buttoned up and behaving properly and then I think what has allowed us to kind of reach the place that we're at now a little lower than
Starting point is 00:32:49 where we started is that we removed those restrictions. And we are fully ourselves. We are fully honest. And we do say brigina, we say cream load. We say things like, Prenis, we say, is it okay? Anal gland, we say, you know what I mean? Like we say this stuff.
Starting point is 00:33:12 What is podcasting about if not expression? Yeah. Is it okay to be, when you're doing, when you're broadcasting or doing comedy is it okay to be politically incorrect so wow okay so here i am a hall of famer asking me yeah you mentioned bill clinton is it okay to be politically incorrect i think that there has to be room in the conversation for really bad ideas to dominate the dialogue right and and i am proud to be a part of the culture that has carved out that space and then and then made the groove so deep that
Starting point is 00:33:55 nothing will ever rest loose some of the absolute worst ideas to ever be said so great i'm so glad that i'm driving the bus what i call politically correct okay pc is what you and some other people would call politically incorrect and what i call politically incorrect and what i call politically incorrect Correct, is some of the type of stuff that, like, other people, you would call politically correct. Yeah. So when you say, is it okay to be politically incorrect? My answer is no. Right.
Starting point is 00:34:38 But because it is okay to be politically correct, which when Hayes uses that term, what he's talking about are the kind of things that you would class. and other people primarily you as politically whichever one i feel like i feel like you guys are so incredible that you can do this without will shorts even being here the puzzle master i mean if it it wouldn't hurt i think i don't want to rely on him too much but it wouldn't hurt to have him skittering around like puzzling away at something as we go yeah but he'd have to put on some will pants if he's going to be here out of real respect I'm sorry but there's there's a dress code you know I think there are certain freedoms that we are allowed same vagina yes like let's be open to that preiness preness we're going to want to talk about a little bit you know if it comes
Starting point is 00:35:44 up cream load we're gonna say yeah we're gonna probably talk about a cream load you know yeah we talk about our back there belly buttons which is yeah like her the whole that's our back there belly button that's what that is that's what that is back their belly button and now I think we can actually finally admit on the show that that's what the back there belly button is because you're not afraid to be politically correct which for you or us which yes is what's so Some other people, some folks out there, you, et cetera. Yeah, we'd consider politically incorrect. Yeah, he's got his hand up.
Starting point is 00:36:27 Teacher. Some form of salute. I found my camera. And so, yeah, if we had, if we had Will on the show, well, of course, he'd be won't shorts on this show. That's a, that would be. That's a hard and fast rule. that would be the politically correct way to refer to him sure to me thank you but the other people yeah you it would be the politically yes got it what are you doing in santa cruz yeah what's
Starting point is 00:36:58 gonna happen what's the plan well it's it's because it's the 25th anniversary of bullseye uh i did a 25th anniversary show here in los angeles uh yeah november 1st i'm doing a show in santa cruz November 15th, I'm doing a show in New York. So it'll be interviews, comedy, music. Okay. In each venue, New York, we got Tony Shaloob from Monk. Uh-huh, yeah, okay. We got Bobby and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Bobby's in Egot. Uh-huh. We got John Benjamin from Bob's Burgers. Tony Shalub, just like getting ready to talk Tony. Yeah. it's not really like from monk is not really how we want to be referring to him now he's actually been up to a lot since give me an example he's doing a show about bread right now i think yeah so you should probably introduce i did not know that again i did not know that i appreciate you guys
Starting point is 00:38:03 this is why i'm here this is why i'm here he's he's getting very tucci with it okay right now they're friends so you're watching Tucci like first of all people are thirsting for him this guy is does nothing but exercise right and eat pastas yes pasta and wine and he's charming everyone bald a big point in his favor uh-huh and so you're Tony and you're like okay this is my friend but also give me that here's one for Jesse Tucci main Tucci main so Tucci-Mane so Tucci-Mane that would be like if Stanley Tucci this is a joke for you to Tucci main
Starting point is 00:38:53 so he he like did they mate I guess that'll be breaking bread breaking bread that's the name of the show great thanks Hayes and that's why he's talking to you okay i honestly i thought it that's the only reason we wanted to talk to you we had a relationship previously but he he's done the show before he's done the show before yeah lovely man okay i met him once you know our our mutual friend tom sharpling from the greece nose eggs show yeah um introduce you at the anniversary show here introduced me you want people to go to yours your 25th anniversary show well but other people have a 25th anniversary show well but other people have a 25th anniversary and you're, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:39:42 during the roll call, you were nowhere to be heard. Well, I don't know. I mean, 23 years or so ago, I had the opportunity to visit our friend Tom on the set of Monk in downtown San Francisco. Yeah. And that's the first time I met Tony Shaloo.
Starting point is 00:40:03 He was handed. That was a real social currency at the time. Getting to go on the Monk set, huh? I mean, it was that then... It was basically Studio 55. In like a 2004, that was sort of the equivalent of if it was 2024, and you had the opportunity to meet Dr. Drew. Well, it's...
Starting point is 00:40:31 Like if you were elected to the podcasting Hall of Fame. You know, they say everyone that ever saw the Velvet Underground live and concert went on to start a band. And now they say everyone Whoever visited the Monks set in San Francisco I started my own TBS show. Yeah. Huh?
Starting point is 00:40:46 Yeah. Huh? For just because I visited a monk, I started my own show on TBS. It's about a quirky detective. Oh, well, I was saying that they've just, I was just saying that they've gone to talk about it. Literally decades later.
Starting point is 00:41:02 They bring it up. Yeah, they bring it up for quite sometime. Weirdly brag about it. They drop it. Many years later. They drop it whenever for however long it takes. Right. And that's just been something that's been going on.
Starting point is 00:41:16 Maybe they have a point to make. Well, and that actually, that brings up something that's very interesting for me. Okay. Let's hear it because I've been waiting. That brings up something that's very interesting. I'd love to talk about something interesting. Mm-hmm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:32 Spit it out, Sean. It's okay to say it. Legends of the Regardian? Legends of the Regardian. Remember Hayes was called like Garding Henry? Legends of the Regardian. Owls of Gahoul. Owls of Gahoul.
Starting point is 00:41:55 Right. So you're thinking, Legends of the Regardian is what people call. Owls of Gohull. call him they also would call me out of cool yeah like when you so when you run into say a barista that recognizes you mm-hmm um from hollywood handbook okay not after thank you for specifying there's a lot i could be recognized from you you ordered you order yourself a uh mocha just a regular mocha? Yeah, one mocha, please. Oh, this.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Frappalapa, Chino, bullshit, sweet caramel, coventy, frothed too. This guy just ordered, again, he just orders a mocha. It's like a chocolate coffee. Can I get a cup of mocha? I get a fucking normal. Whatever happened to just get the standard
Starting point is 00:42:50 working class cup of mocha. Okay. Please. So you order yourself a mocha. One mocha. Regular size. Yeah. And the barista says,
Starting point is 00:43:03 Easy on the, what's the name on that? And then they stop themselves. And they say, well, of course, the name on this order is, and they take their marker out. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:43:17 And they write regarding. Legends of the Guardian. The Guardian. Owls of Gahoole. And if they don't know it's him pretty quick, or me, because we're regarding so much. And we do have to get behind the counter to regard them at some point. Because you got to get the full 360 regard.
Starting point is 00:43:40 Yeah, the counter is cutting off some of the stuff that I need to regard. So I'm like bumping into it. Yeah, I'm like sort of like leaning all the way over it. I'm pretending that I'm sick or something. I have to lie down on the counter and then I'm like sort of rolling. myself off falling down do you even have to pretend maybe you're ill a lot of times i am i will be if i certainly not feeling good yeah i will be if i don't get to look mm-hmm i will get really sick if i don't get to look soon it's sort of your lifeblood yeah i know i understand that and so they better
Starting point is 00:44:12 lift that little enclosure open for me so i can get back there oh like the flap yeah so i can do the full 360 your guard love that flap love that flap because it's a combination what a cool of a table and not there on the flap yet what a cool idea i i just can't believe it because for so long there was no flap right well if people thought you i it had you were you were either behind the counter in front of it and that was it when i was in school yeah when i was in school this is like forever ago now uh okay boomer uh this is forever ago yeah when i was in school they said or table yeah both never able did we that was the thing they would say door or table both never able they said that in school because you can't combine door and table then a new generation comes around
Starting point is 00:45:09 that isn't afraid of new ideas and they say what if a door and a table were both something what if both were a thing and some guy or lady or non-binary person said yeah if the door door opens flap style, then it can also be a table. But is that ablest? To say, to take something that has been said is never able and to just spit in the face and go, that's bad. I'm changing that. Is that ablest?
Starting point is 00:45:40 That's a really good question. I don't know. Let's throw it out there to the audience. My thing is. Yeah, let's hear everybody please respond to Jesse online. Yeah. Let him know is the flat, is the counterflap, which Hayes isn't there yet on it. I'm starting to come around to what Hayes is here.
Starting point is 00:45:55 I want to knock. And I want to knock. The lights are already lighting up. Let's go to line three in Temecula. This is Hank. It's just a little bit. It was just a bit. I don't want to talk to Hank.
Starting point is 00:46:08 Funny. Yeah. I like that. Hank's on the phone. Yeah. I like that idea. Yeah. It's not for this show, but I like the idea.
Starting point is 00:46:15 I think that could be actually maybe cereal does it or something. Can I characterize that idea? Go ahead. Most of the way there. Oh, yeah. it's getting really close if you knock on the flap sometimes you're like hitting the things that are on it because it is a table as you said it's a door and a table
Starting point is 00:46:35 are you against the flap tool so they put stuff all over it yeah I'm pressing against it he's not there he yeah oh yeah oh so literally you're against it but are you opposed to it I'm not there yet you're not there because I want to knock and if I knock I'm hitting some of the syrups and some of the items that are on there I'm actually depressing the syrup dispenser. So you're knocking on the top of the Syrup dispenser.
Starting point is 00:46:58 My area. Which syrup dispenser? Caramel. The menth. The cremda mence. No. On your area? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:47:07 You're a Menth right. Menth rite activist. Menth right. I'm a Mith right activist. Wow. Yeah. It's the last thing I expect to hear of you today. Hayes.
Starting point is 00:47:21 I know, but I've started to feel bad for them because they're getting knocked on so much by people that are trying to access the back hold on. If you get menthol on that area, man, it will be pretty active down there. Is this podcast part of the menthosphere? We're trying to get in there.
Starting point is 00:47:38 Knock, knock. This is our formal submission, actually. We know they're going to pay attention to this episode. I made an informal submission after I got some menton there. Wow. It's an informal e-mission. Yeah, I think that's why.
Starting point is 00:47:53 that's probably better and then submission i but that i that would have taken two steps i could only really do the one so i was sort of hoping submission would be they always tell you an improv to b yeah what sort of clear the flap for you a to b well and if i get a running start i will be able to get all the way over that thing oh yeah you yeah and i'm just that's never going to happen for me. It's the best I can hope for is that I can crawl under it. You know what the reason I'm... They don't always have it set up like that.
Starting point is 00:48:30 You know what the reason I'm here today is? Tell me. Now? I realize. Go ahead. Because before I thought it was just because my publicist. But now I know it's just to convey the message to you guys. Hayes, Sean, regarding Henry.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Legend of the story. I'm here to convey to you that I believe in you. Like, I really think you can do it. I think I speak for the audience. I think that no matter what kind of flap stands in your way, whether you have to go under it, over it, through it, open it, close it, crem to meth, you can handle this thing. that is so awesome to hear from you jesse and i just want to share in return thank you that
Starting point is 00:49:25 i have opinions about you as well thank you and regarding regarding specifically to your ability to handle it yeah yeah so it's like we're all in the same so we all have opinions about that that i share yeah around just with that i say just we're in alignment yeah i say yeah i say it to people just like you said it i'm saying you said it out loud i've said about you whether i feel that you can handle it take that home you know what i mean or take it to santa cruz i guess go banana slugs have you can i ask with with whom you've been talking i have been talking well i meet i meet up with uh sonia monson i was gonna kind of get dr sonia munson sean and i will meet well like you said she's a fan of the show she's a big fan her nephew turned her on to it and so
Starting point is 00:50:21 you know like she she wants to give us some material some funny stories in return we've given her a few over the years she gets a lot of laughs less than our show it's sort of a form of therapy for her and she goes well you guys should be allowed to laugh as well let me tell you some of the fucked up shit i've been listening to you know what i mean and it's actually really cool like it's like sort of like just to get behind the curtain in that way with someone in that field. Okay. Is there anybody else you guys have been talking to?
Starting point is 00:50:55 Is this what you do? Like someone gives you a great answer for something. And then I ask for a second answer. Can I just can you do just another one? Yeah. I believe in you guys. The questions are so long and then they get answered. And then it's like, I get another answer too.
Starting point is 00:51:11 Can we just do that again? I get a couple more answers. brought my trophy is that not enough for you people it's kind of sharp i really am nervous seeing the trophy here and i wish it would wait outside i'm gonna keep it here why i guess it's better if i know where it is it's clear though i like seeing it makes me feel good it's a hollow man reminds me of the work i've done over the past 25 years which is what again podcast bye Hollywood Handbook.
