Starting point is 00:00:07 Hello everyone and welcome back to horror stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. Story one, I moved in with my dad when I was 10 years old, and at that time, I didn't know anyone in the area, except for one family he was friends with, a single mother with three kids. Luckily, among them was a girl a couple of years older than me.
Starting point is 00:00:47 She was 12 when I met her. As the years went by, we got to know each other a little. We weren't particularly close, but over time we started hanging out with the same group of friends. One night my friend Rob was hanging out with her and her younger brother. At that time, they were alone in the house because their mother was at work. My friend's mom was helping a woman through her job, and they had developed some level of trust. Eventually, she found out that the woman's sister had been institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital and had recently been released.
Starting point is 00:01:19 That night while Rob was there, someone knocked on the door. My friend thought it was her mother, since she used to knock in a particular way before entering. That's why she opened the door without giving it much thought. Rob, who wasn't supposed to be there, jumped out the window and ran to his house a few doors down. He didn't think anything strange at the time, but it wasn't her mother. It was the sister of the woman her mom had been helping. Apparently she had managed to find out the family's address on the mother's work schedule through several conversations with her sister.
Starting point is 00:01:51 She entered the house. From this point on, the details are blurry to me, and honestly, I'm glad I don't know them. What I do know is that my friend's younger brother managed to escape and ran to the neighbor's house to ask for help and call the police. Delaney, that was the woman's name, brutally murdered my friend just a week before Christmas. She decapitated her and left her naked body in the bathtub. She even hit her head. They had to look through the presents to find it. I don't know exactly where they found it, but they did. They didn't allow me to go to her funeral. Story two. This happened to my wife's grandmother
Starting point is 00:02:32 about 15 years ago, back when my wife and I were still dating. Her husband had passed away about a year earlier, but she had started volunteering at the library. She did it to stay active and socialize a bit. It was winter, so by the time she returned home, it was already getting dark. The library closed at 5 p.m. But there were always a few extra tasks that kept the staff there a little longer. That particular night, another volunteer offered her a ride home, but she politely declined. She wanted to keep walking to stay in shape. She lived about a mile away. and the path went through a slightly wooded area in South Texas. When she was halfway home, she noticed someone walking behind her.
Starting point is 00:03:16 He was going in the same direction, but what was unsettling was that he was gradually getting closer. While that might not seem strange, she was older and didn't walk very fast. There was something about the man that gave her an uneasy feeling. They kept walking. Before long, he was right behind her, almost stepping on her heels.
Starting point is 00:03:37 He didn't pass her. just stayed right behind matching her pace. At that moment, she knew something was wrong. Luckily, she was already close to home. She could see the top of her driveway, and she always left the lights on to make it look like someone was inside for safety. She only had about 150 meters left, maybe a little less. During that stretch, she said he was so close she could feel his breath on the back of her neck. Then when she had only about 50 meters left, it happened. A strong strong hand landed on her shoulder. Don't turn around and give me your purse or I'll cut you, he said in a low, threatening voice. She paused for a second. Then she took a big step forward,
Starting point is 00:04:20 spun around quickly, and shot him in the neck with the point three eight revolver she always carried in her purse. The man survived but spent the next five years in a prison hospital before passing away due to complications. My wife's grandmother passed away last year. Until her final days, she always said she regretted pulling the trigger too soon. Story three. When I was little, probably around 8 to 11 years old. My sister, who was seven years older than me, used to take care of me when our parents went out. At the time, she smoked a lot, and since our parents didn't allow her to smoke inside the house, she had to go out to the backyard. I used to follow her outside, play near her, bother her. Typical sibling stuff. One day my sister noticed a car parked at the end of
Starting point is 00:05:13 our driveway. It was a white SUV with a bike rack on the roof. The most striking thing was that it had the darkest tinted windows I'd ever seen. You couldn't see anything inside from the sides. The vehicle would just sit there still, on the street, until she went back inside the house. Then it would slowly drive down to the church parking lot at the end of the street and wait there. Later, when she went out to smoke again, the pattern repeated. It was strange, but my sister has always been brave, so she decided not to pay it much attention. At first. But the next day when our parents went out again, the car showed up once more.
Starting point is 00:05:52 It parked right at the end of the driveway and just sat there watching. We never knew exactly what the driver was doing, but it was obvious he was watching my sister. I know because sometimes I didn't go outside with her. I would stay inside watching through the front window, and from there I could see how the car just sat there, as if it were waiting, or watching. She decided to tell my dad who was working as a sheriff's deputy at the time. He didn't waste any time. He called the police and filed a report. They came out, checked the area, drove around, but the SUV was already gone.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Months passed with no sign of that vehicle, but about nine months after all of this, and roughly four months since the last sighting it came back. It became a regular thing again. One day my sister went out to the backyard to smoke, that bad habit of hers, and as usual, the SUV was there. This time we were alone, like many times before, and my sister had had enough.
Starting point is 00:06:54 She told me to stay under the carport and said she was going to confront whoever was in the vehicle. She started walking down the driveway, determined to confront the person inside. However, she later told us that halfway there, something inside her warned her. I felt a deep terror, like I just knew if I took one more step I would die. I was paralyzed with fear. She turned around and went back into the house.
Starting point is 00:07:20 That day we couldn't go out. Our family car was in the shop due to a mechanical issue, so we were all stuck at home for the night. Later on, when our parents were back, my sister went out to smoke again. I went with her as usual. And yes, the SUV showed up again. She asked me to run inside and tell Dad. I went straight to get him. My dad didn't waste a second.
Starting point is 00:07:45 He grabbed his gun and started walking down the driveway, heading straight toward the SUV with a firm stride. He didn't aim the gun, but he made sure it was visible. The SUV suddenly roared to life, sped down the street, and turned sharply onto the nearby highway. My dad, with his experience as an officer, was able to identify the model. year and several specific features of the vehicle.
Starting point is 00:08:08 The most unsettling part was that the license plate had been covered with gray duct tape. We never saw it again. Story 4. I was only 4 or 5 years old when my parents separated. My mom moved into a two-bedroom apartment. Even though I had my own room, I always preferred to sleep in her bed when I stayed with her. Both bedrooms were at the end of the hallway directly across from each other. The apartment was on the ground floor, and I remember it was the middle of summer.
Starting point is 00:08:42 My mom used to leave a window open in her room to let in some fresh air. This window was located right behind the bed above the headboard. One night I woke up in the middle of the night, and as I sat up, I saw our cat sitting in the doorway of my mom's bedroom. It's worth mentioning that the door was open, and from there you could partially see into my room. I thought it was strange because our cat almost always sleep. left with us in the bed. As I watched him, he stood up, walked into my room and meowed. I turned toward my mom to wake her up. In the three or four seconds it took me to nudge her and tell her
Starting point is 00:09:17 something was going on. We both looked toward the door, and there standing in the doorway was a man. He was coming out of my room walking out. To this day, I don't know how she moved so fast, but my mom grabbed me and literally threw me through me through the window screen. Then she jumped out behind me. We managed to scream for help and someone called 911. The police arrived, but they didn't find any signs of forced entry. They only noticed that the front door was unlocked. They assumed the man had escaped through it. The strange part is that my mom swore up and down that she had locked the door with a deadbolt and chain that night. A few days later, while cleaning the kitchen, she opened the small closet where the water heater was and found a notebook filled with names and drawings,
Starting point is 00:10:03 along with a pair of gloves and some candy wrappers. They called the police again, but all they could do was assume that the man had been hiding inside the apartment and waited for us to fall asleep. Sometime later, something else happened that still chills me to this day. One day while doing laundry in the basement, one of the lights went out. The basement is divided into two parts.
Starting point is 00:10:27 The laundry room in the rest of the basement, separated by a wall with a door. To get upstairs, you have to leave the laundry room and walk through the other part of the basement. The bulb that went out was the only source of light on that side of the basement, so it was completely dark. I finished the laundry I had to do, though the whole time I felt an increasing unease about having to walk through the darkness.
Starting point is 00:10:51 When I finally left the laundry room and was halfway through, I heard a loud, chilling laugh. Imagine the typical sound someone makes when imitating a witch's laugh, but now imagine that witch has smoked for 50 years straight. Her voice was raspyer, deeper and rougher. That was the sound I heard clear as day right behind me. I didn't hesitate for even a second. I ran straight for the stairs.
Starting point is 00:11:16 I waited for my dad to get home to change the bulb, and ever since then, I've never heard that laugh again. I also haven't told anyone at home about it. Story 5. This happened to a friend of mine. She told me about it around a year ago. We'll call her Minji. Minji is in her early 20s and works as an English tutor in South Korea.
Starting point is 00:11:43 One night a few years ago, she was giving private lessons to a high school student. They ended up studying late, and by then the buses had already stopped running. Since he lived quite far away, the student asked if he could sleep on the floor of her apartment and take the first bus in the morning. Minji hesitated a lot because it didn't seem appropriate to let a teenage student spend the night at her place. It wouldn't look good, especially since she was hit. his tutor, but he kept insisting practically begging, so she finally agreed. They went back to her small one-room apartment. Minji got into bed, and the student laid out a blanket on the floor to sleep. Before long, they were both asleep. A few hours later, around 2 a.m., the boy woke Minji up.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I'm really hungry, he said. Let's go get something to eat. Minji opened her eyes, confused, and looked at him from the bed with disbelief. eat now it's two in the morning go back to sleep but the boy kept insisting seriously i'm hungry let's go out and get something to eat she told him there was instant ramen in the kitchen and he could make some if he was really that hungry but that wasn't enough for him i don't want ramen there's a 24-hour place just down the street let's go there he said after several minutes of trying to convince her the boy's finally got Minji to agree to go out to the restaurant with him. As soon as they stepped outside, the boy turned to her and said, I'm not hungry. I woke up in the middle of the night and looked
Starting point is 00:13:17 under your bed. There's a man sleeping under it. They immediately called the police. After investigating, they discovered that a homeless man had been living in Minji's apartment for two months, sleeping under her bed every night. The boy had only seen him because lying on the floor, he had a clear view underneath. Story six, I was driving alone, taking a shortcut from 29 Palms, California, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. 29 Palms is in a desolate high desert east of Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:13:53 The shortcut was a two-lane highway that cut through absolute nothingness, except for one small town you had to pass through. Amboy. Amboy is practically a ghost town, almost completely abandoned, and sits nearly as low below sea level as death. Valley. It was late afternoon when I began climbing the mountain range between Amboy and the I-40
Starting point is 00:14:15 highway. Once at the top, I was heading north through a canyon flanked by tall grass on both sides of the road. Up ahead I spotted something in the middle of the highway. I slowed down as I approached and saw a red Pontiac Fiero blocking both lanes. There was an open suitcase, close scattered everywhere, and two bodies lying face down on the asphalt. A man and a woman. I stopped about 30 meters away, the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up. As a Marine, my instincts kicked in. I reached under the seat, pulled out my 9mm pistol, and chambered around immediately. Something wasn't right.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Everything looked a little too, perfect, like it had been staged deliberately. I had a strong gut feeling this was an ambush. The whole scene just felt off. As I scanned the road ahead, I planned a possible escape. escape route. I could drive to the left of the man, then make a sharp right behind the woman and the car, getting passed without hitting anyone or crashing into the vehicle. I shifted into first gear, floored the gas pedal, and followed the exact path I'd mapped out. I passed behind the Fiera without touching the car or the bodies. I continued for another hundred meters, slowed down to
Starting point is 00:15:32 breathe, trying to calm my pounding heart. And that's when I looked in the rearview mirror. The two bodies were sitting up on their knees now, and from the tall grass on both sides of the road, about 20 people started emerging. At that very moment, my right foot slammed the gas pedal to the floor, and I didn't let up until I reached the on-ramp heading east to the I-40 and was forced to break. I'll never know what would have happened if I'd stopped closer, or if I'd gotten out of the car to check if those people were okay. Story 7. Some friends and I were night fishing on the James River. sitting by the shore with a good campfire burning, chatting about random things and sharing a few beers. Everything was calm until suddenly, as if someone had flipped a switch, we all fell silent.
Starting point is 00:16:25 We all stared across the river, struck by a clear and terrifying feeling that something, or someone, was watching us from the darkness. It was an unsettling heavy sensation, like the air itself had become dense. A few guys tried to shake it off with the usual tough guy jokes, but no one really laughed. Then out of nowhere, a chilling scream came from the opposite bank. It froze all of us in place. I had never heard a sound like that before. Every hair on my body stood on end, and I felt a cold shiver run through me. The only way I can describe it is as if some wild person, completely unable to speak, was being guttered alive.
Starting point is 00:17:06 There were no words, just a high-pitched gut-wrenching scream. totally inhuman. No one moved. No one said a single word. We just stood there, hypnotized, staring at the other side of the river. And then as if that wasn't enough, a second scream echoed, louder than the first. At that point, several of us bolted to our trucks parked just a few yards away and came back with various firearms. We sat again in a circle, this time in complete silence, eyes locked on the opposite riverbank, watching how the firelight flickered off the stones. We waited for any movement. Another scream. Something. Eventually, a third scream came, but this time it didn't come from across the river. It came from our side,
Starting point is 00:17:54 right from a patch of bushes just a few feet away from where we were sitting. In that instant, we all took off running like our lives depended on it. We left nearly all our gear behind. Back at the trucks, just as we were about to drive off, the scream rang out again. this time beyond the tree line. We floored it and sped out of there. We never found out what was making those sounds. Story 8. It was Friday night, and my friend was picking me up from my house in his car.
Starting point is 00:18:30 I was in a rush because we were running late for a hockey game in the city. During the whole drive, we were having such a great time laughing and talking that I didn't even notice I didn't have my phone with me. When I finally realized it, I started searching between the seats and on the floor of the car, but it wasn't anywhere. I figured I must have left it at home. During the game, I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility that I might have dropped it somewhere. So I borrowed my friend's phone and ran to the bathroom to make a call. I dialed my number and waited, hoping someone at home would pick up. It rang three times before someone answered, but on the other end of the line,
Starting point is 00:19:08 there was complete silence. I shouted into the phone that I was just calling to check if I had left my phone at home. No response. I assumed it was my younger brother playing a prank so I hung up. I got home late that night and noticed my parents weren't there. I walked in and called them to find out where they were. They told me they had gone out to dinner and then to a concert in the park with my little brother. They had left shortly after I went to the game and said they'd be home in about 30 minutes. I hung up and started looking for my phone when suddenly a chilling thought hit me. How could anyone in my family have answered the phone if no one had been home? I felt a nod in my stomach and a cold shiver ran through my entire body. That's when I heard the sound of the back
Starting point is 00:19:53 door opening and closing. Without thinking, I bolted out the front door and ran straight to the neighbor's house to call the police. Apparently, someone had found the back door unlocked and simply walked into the house. Nothing was stolen, but the scariest part was realizing we could have come home and gone to sleep with a stranger still inside, completely unaware. Story 9. Some time ago, a family moved in next door. They had a son who was deeply disturbed. He was obsessed with horror movies and constantly wanted me to talk about things that happened while I served in Vietnam. Things a normal person wouldn't want to hear. He also loved tormenting stray animals. This kid was a lost cause. At the time, he was 19 years old, and my daughter was only seven.
Starting point is 00:20:45 yet he always wanted to talk to her. He would start conversations with her when she came home from school and talked to her through the fence while she played in the backyard. But what really pushed me over the edge was when he called our house asking to speak with her. That was it. I went to their house, confronted him and his parents, and told them to keep him away from her. I didn't want to see him near her ever again.
Starting point is 00:21:08 That's when things got strange. My daughter had always had a vivid imagination and was a bit paranoid. She thought there were monsters under her bed and things like that. So when she told us there was something living in her closet and that she was too scared to get up and tell us at night, but that it wasn't there during the day, we didn't take it seriously. A few weeks later, one night when my wife and daughter were staying at my mother's for a girl's night, I decided to take advantage of having the house to myself,
Starting point is 00:21:38 turned on HBO and watched some movies. I ended up falling asleep on the couch. Around 2 a.m. I got a call from the neighbor with the creepy sun. They said something like they saw I was awake, so they called because their son had gone missing. He had gone to the bathroom, and they noticed his door was open, which was unusual, and he was nowhere to be found. They needed help searching for him. That phone call woke me up, though I hadn't actually been awake. So I asked them why they thought I was up. They replied that their son had seen me walking upstairs and that my light was on. A cold shiver ran down my spine. I had been passed out on the couch. I knew no one had turned on any lights. I hung up, ran out to my truck to grab my shotgun, and saw the sheriff's car pulling up to my neighbor's house. I ran over and told them someone was in my house. Now I could clearly see the lights on in my daughter's room and a silhouette pacing back and forth. When the officers entered, they found the neighbor's son in there, waiting in my daughter's room,
Starting point is 00:22:42 with a little hideout set up in her closet. He said he liked watching her sleep in the moonlight.
