Starting point is 00:00:58 I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. Story one, at 15, I had my first girlfriend, Casey. We lived in an upscale, very quiet residential area with peaceful streets. She lived just two blocks from my house, so I usually walk to her place almost every evening. One Thursday night during the holidays and with nothing particular to do, I started my walk to Casey's house.
Starting point is 00:01:38 It was late, but since I didn't have a fixed time to return, it didn't matter. However, I soon began to hear noises around me. especially behind me. The first time it was the sound of a bush shaking slightly. I just turned my head for a second without stopping and began to walk a bit faster. As I reached the next block, I heard another noise, like the crunch of a twig or stick. This time I stopped and looked back, but only saw the empty street and the bushes that bordered each property, separating the sidewalks from the private grounds. Essentially, next to the street was a wall of bushes, and I saw no one or anything that could be making those strange sounds. I quickened my pace even more and was
Starting point is 00:02:20 nearing the home stretch to Casey's house. Of course another sound occurred, this time more like quick light footsteps. I turned again without stopping, but there was no one in sight. I could already see Casey's house. I called her and she answered right away. I told her how scared I was because I kept hearing noises. I rounded the bushes at her entrance and stepped onto her property. I noticed she was watching me from the window of her bedroom on the second floor. She waved at me while still on the phone and I waved back. Then she asked me who the man was who was right behind me. I turned around immediately and saw an adult man crouched walking about ten feet behind me.
Starting point is 00:03:01 I screamed and ran to the door banging on it loudly. The man grabbed me and tried to put me in some kind of hold, but he let go and ran off quickly. Casey's mother opened the door with a look of consternation. on her face. Let me in and slammed the door shut as Casey ran towards us. I was breathless and felt my heart beating a thousand times a minute. Casey's mother hugged me, asked a few questions, and then called the police to alert them about a dangerous man lurking in the area. Casey's mother allowed me to stay that night for obvious reasons, and the next day she drove me home. Story two. It was a stormy and perilous night. Each member of my family was occupied.
Starting point is 00:03:48 with their own activities. I was in my room watching TV. My parents were in the living room watching some comedy show, and my sister was playing video games upstairs. Normally I enjoyed stormy nights because they relaxed me. However, my peace was disrupted when a monstrous thunder clap shook my window. I jumped up and looked outside. There was someone on the other side of the window, but the heavy rain blurred their face. They began to bang on the glass, seeming to skiming to scream for help. I opened the window just a bit, and he shouted that he was injured. The noise of the rain was so loud that I had to yell at him to go around the house and come in through the front door before I slammed the window shut. I ran to the living room to tell my father that there
Starting point is 00:04:34 was a man outside, in apparent distress and asking for help. Just then the pounding and shouting began at our front door. My father was about to open it, but I stopped him, saying to wait because I wasn't sure if it was a good idea. At that moment, the phone rang and the caller ID on the TV showed it was our neighbor. My father rushed to answer and hearing him say, no way, I knew something was wrong. He hung up and told us to stay away from the door, no further explanations given, and approached the window to look out. From there, he saw a man crouch down banging on the door and holding something that looked
Starting point is 00:05:11 like a large, sharp tool. My father shouted through the door at the man to leave before the police arrived, and then he actually called the police. Eventually, the man outside gave up and disappeared. The next time my father spoke on the phone with the neighbor, he learned that the neighbor had seen a homeless-looking man rummaging through his shed and coming out with a large axe. The police found the disturbed man wandering the streets, and his story appeared in the newspaper a few days later. Story 3. One night when I was very young I was in the living room watching my favorite cartoon. I had the TV volume up high, but I thought I heard my mom calling me from the basement.
Starting point is 00:05:55 I responded by asking what she wanted but got no reply. I assumed she hadn't heard me. I heard her call me again, so I went down to the basement. The lights were off, so halfway down I yelled from my mom, but she didn't respond. I didn't know from where she could be calling, but one thing was certain. She was not in the basement. I started to climb the stairs back up, but before I reached the last step, I heard my mom's voice from the basement again, calling my name. I looked into the total darkness, ran back to the first step, dimmed the lights a bit, and hesitantly advanced halfway down the stairs, peering into the basement.
Starting point is 00:06:33 I saw no sign of my mom anywhere down there. Suddenly I felt an overwhelming terror, ran up the stairs, practically crying for my mom. She quickly came down from the upper floor and between tears. I told her that something was calling me from below with her voice. She swore to me that she hadn't been calling me. She went down to the basement to check and to make me feel better, but I didn't feel any better. I'm sure she didn't believe me. Why would she?
Starting point is 00:07:01 I was just a kid, but even so I know what I heard. Story 4. My grandfather recently told me a story about a walk he took with his dog. He had a small Boston Terrier named Sherry, named after an old friend of his who had passed away. My grandfather lives about two hours away from us on a farm, where life is quite peaceful. He lives with his wife, Marianne, whom he married about 15 years ago. Every day, Marianne would walk Sherry in the morning, and my grandfather would take her out in the evening during sunset. On one of these routine walks, as my grandfather was walking Sherry along the dirt path that borders the forest next to their property,
Starting point is 00:07:44 They passed by another person on the path. Sherry instinctively barked and tugged on the leash towards the stranger, as most dogs do when they see someone they don't know. My grandfather greeted the stranger who was wearing a large hood, but the person just walked by without even looking. So he and the dog continued on their way. However, Sherry kept looking back occasionally and barking. My grandfather had to quiet her and tug on the leash to keep her moving. Eventually, my grandfather turned to see what Sherry was barking at. The stranger they had passed a few minutes earlier was stalking them from behind a tree at a distance. My grandfather decided to quicken his pace as fast as he could at his advanced age. He always carried pepper spray in the large pocket of his coat, just in case.
Starting point is 00:08:32 As he was getting closer to the house, he heard the clicks of leaves on the ground right behind him. But before he could turn around, he felt the heat of a glove covering his mouth. and nose, preventing him from screaming or breathing. My grandfather says he could hear Sherry barking and biting the stranger, which probably helped loosen the man's grip a bit. My grandfather struggled to pull the pepper spray from his pocket, and once he managed, he sprayed it at least ten times, continuing even after the man holding him let go and began to scream.
Starting point is 00:09:04 My grandfather ran as fast as he could back to his house. Fortunately, he was perfectly fine. Story 5. I grew up in California for the first 14 years of my life. Our neighborhood wasn't the best, mainly because it was a known area for the Crips, members of one of the largest street gangs in Los Angeles. My best friend, whom I always called Stevie D, lived two doors down from my house. Sure, we had other friends, but often it was just him and I hanging out. Typically, we'd ride our bikes around town or play video games, typical kid stuff.
Starting point is 00:09:42 When we were 12 years old, one night we were biking around the neighborhood and decided to visit a well-known abandoned house. It had been unoccupied for many years because nobody wanted to buy it for some reason. When we arrived on our bikes in front of the house, Stevie pointed towards the window and said, Look, I pushed my bike a bit closer to the window and focused on it. I could see someone peeking through the window. I couldn't tell if they were looking at us or not, but it was definitely the face of a person between the curtains. It was extremely strange considering the place had been vacant for years. We stared longer than we probably should have and noticed something even stranger. The person wasn't moving their
Starting point is 00:10:23 face at all. We moved a bit closer up to the empty driveway. As we approached, it seemed to be a Halloween decoration or something, like a fake head. This meant that someone had entered the house to place it there. Stevie D. and I, being the mischievous kids that we were, devised a plan. We decided to sneak in through the back somehow and explore the place. We hit our bikes next to the house, behind a bushy shrub, and then slipped into the yard. To our surprise, the back door was already unlocked, but when we thought about it, it wasn't so surprising, considering it seemed like someone had already entered to put that fake head there. We entered the house, but didn't want to turn on the lights and expose the fact that we were inside.
Starting point is 00:11:06 It was dark there, but not completely pitch black, so we could navigate through the house. We first went to the living room because we wanted to check out that fake head thing at the window. However, it smelled really bad in that room. I lifted the head from the window sill and immediately dropped it and screamed. I dropped it not because it was surprisingly heavy, but because it also felt like real skin. I saw a dark liquid spilling from the bottom of the head that was now on the floor. It was blood. It was a real human head.
Starting point is 00:11:38 There were two cracks in the ceiling above us. Stevie and I looked at each other with our mouths open. We ran to the back door, got back to our bikes, and sped away as fast as we could. Soon anyone in our immediate area knew that the head belonged to a victim of the Crips, who apparently placed the head there as some kind of message. I don't think anyone knew the whole story, but there was a good chance that whoever placed that head was still in the house, because Stevie and I both heard creaks in the ceiling, like someone was coming down the stairs. Story 6. Last year, a man showed up at my doorstep around 9 p.m. He knocked on the door, so I went to
Starting point is 00:12:23 fetch my mother, and she came out to see who it was. By the way, we live in a rural area, so visits at that hour are extremely unusual and odd. The man talked to my mother about how he was starting a business and asked if she liked products made in America, then handed her a container of Clorox as a sample. He went back to his minivan and opened it to pull out a supposed vacuum cleaner, but when my mother saw five other men sitting inside, she told me to run and get my phone since we don't have a landline. I couldn't find it, so I grabbed my knife and stayed around the corner. She threw the container outside and yelled at them to get off our property and that she was calling the police. They sped away from the driveway and we never saw that car again. Story 7,
Starting point is 00:13:12 I've always been a fan of extreme sports since I was little, mountain climbing, paragliding, diving, and though I've always been an enthusiastic skier, I used to go skiing up north at least ten times per season, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone. My friend whom I call Hugh agreed to come up north and camp with me for some backcountry skiing, which basically involved skiing in unmarked and unpatrolled areas outside of ski resort boundaries. It was a three-hour drive and then a good stretch of off-road driving to get to where the hills were. I parked my truck at the base of an area of hills that seemed suitable, but I also stopped there because I couldn't go much further due to the number of trees. Hugh and I proceeded to unload the back of my truck with all our gear, including ski equipment
Starting point is 00:13:58 and camping utensils. Then we walked about a quarter of a mile, which was incredibly tough with all that we were carrying. We found the perfect spot to camp right at the base of a hill and in a small clearing among the trees. Setting up the tent and unpacking our sleeping bags and gear was our priority. Once that was done, we started climbing the hill to explore the area. We did a good amount of hiking, but also took the opportunity to do quite a bit of skiing. At one point, Hugh and I separated while skiing downhill on a larger hill.
Starting point is 00:14:30 I assumed we would meet at the base or that I would eventually find him. I checked the walkie-talkie to see if he would respond, but he didn't, which meant he was probably still coming down. At some point, while I was walking with my skis at the base of the hill, I ran into another skier. He sounded very friendly under his ski mask, asking where the best hills were and if we were camping and stuff like that. He had his skis strapped to his orange backpack. I pointed out the hill I had just come down and also the direction where we had set up camp. He said he and his wife were trying to find a good spot to camp near other people and asked if I could guide him to my camp.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Though I really didn't want to go all the way back there, I felt I should be a good Samaritan and help this man and his wife. I took out my walkie-talkie again and told Hugh over the speaker that I would be going back to the camp for a while. I started leading the man who was following behind me when suddenly I started to receive static from the other end of the walkie. It seemed like someone probably Hugh was trying to talk to me. But the connection was terrible and there was nothing I could do about it except return to this hill later. It took a good while of walking and trivial chat with the man before we reached the camp. I turned to him and smiled under my ski mask, which I immediately realized was pointless. He sounded very grateful for him and his wife, and finally I asked where his wife was.
Starting point is 00:15:56 He didn't respond. He started to approach me. At first I didn't think anything bad, but for some reason something about his skis and backpack caught my attention. They belonged to Hugh. For a second, I thought, is Hugh playing a joke on me? But it wasn't possible. The voice was too different. The man was a few meters from me at that point and started to quicken his pace in a more intimidating manner. I panicked and jumped into the tent to search for my flare gun in my bag.
Starting point is 00:16:26 The man grabbed my leg which was sticking out of the tent, and then I felt a sharp, intense tingling in my leg, like a strong electrical shock followed by a sensation of burning heat. I screamed in pain just as I managed to pull out the flare gun, pushed the tent door aside, and aimed at the man. He immediately backed off with his hands in the air. That's when I noticed the knife deeply embedded in my leg. I ordered the man to tell me where my friend was. He quickly replied, saying he was near the base of the hill where he had met me.
Starting point is 00:16:59 I told the man to stay still while I called 911 to request immediate rescue. But the man easily escaped while I was on the phone. There wasn't much I could do with just one flare shot. I felt like I was waiting there in the cold with my leg bleeding endlessly until finally the comforting sound of a rescue helicopter flew overhead and I fired my flare gun. I couldn't believe I was actually being picked up by a helicopter, which helped locate my friend lying in the snow in the middle of the hill. He was unconscious and had also been stabbed twice in the leg and robbed. He tried to talk to me through the walkie-talkie as he was losing cold.
Starting point is 00:17:36 consciousness, but the connection was bad. Both of us ended up in the hospital but are okay today. Story 8, I lived in a small college town. My apartment complex was within walking distance of the bar area and downtown. One weekday night, I stepped out onto the front porch to smoke a cigarette or two while studying late. I brought my textbook with me and lay down on the steps while I smoked. A girl who I had never met before, but who lived in an apartment on the ground floor next to mine. came home from downtown. She was alone, and you could tell from her walk that she had been drinking. She entered her apartment and had barely closed the door
Starting point is 00:18:21 when a man who appeared out of nowhere knocked on her door. She opened it, and I noticed that he introduced himself, which was odd because it was 2.30 a.m. Who goes to a girl's apartment at that hour? So I decided to stay outside and pay attention. They ended up talking for more than ten minutes. She later acknowledged how strange the situation. situation was but didn't know how to end the conversation. He did creepy things like stroking her
Starting point is 00:18:47 hair at least three times, and he tried to slowly move closer to her and the door. I purposely made noise with my textbook to let her know I was there, and he disappeared as mysteriously as he had arrived. We called the police, and days later they had the girl and me sit with an artist to create a composite sketch. As soon as the sketch went public, a lot of calls came in. It turned out that the guy was a serial rapist who followed girls home from bars and pretended to be a taxi driver offering them a ride. This girl was just lucky because she lived so close to the bars that he didn't have the opportunity to pull his taxi routine. Story 9. I've only used Craigslist once in my life, and that single time left a bad taste in my mouth. Here's why. A man posted an ad for a ping pong
Starting point is 00:19:41 table that I wanted to buy for my roommate and me. We agreed on a time for me to pick it up that evening. I had to remove the back seats from my van to fit the table. I arrived in front of the guy's house and texted him that I was there. I saw the door open so I got out of my van and quickly walked up to his door to greet him. I tried to shake his hand, but I think he didn't see my arm, so after a few awkward seconds, I lowered my hand. He told me in his raspy smoker's voice to follow him to the basement. The whole house had a distinctive smell, not exactly bad or worrying, just a smoky cotton scent. We got to the basement and there was the ping pong table, right in the middle of the room. Suddenly, he said, oh shoot, I have to find the paddles. He ran up the
Starting point is 00:20:29 stairs and told me to wait there. I waited down there for a while, assuming he had lost the paddles and was having trouble finding them. I started to snoop around his basement a bit, looking at his pictures and such. It was odd he had framed photos on the furniture, but they were all just of him. No family. There was one where at least he was with a dog, but that was it. About ten minutes passed and I was still stuck waiting down there, so I became even nosier. There was a backroom in his basement that he used as a laundry storage room that I began to peek into. For some reason, there was a utility desk drawer that was half open. I fully opened it and it revealed old Polaroid photos, but these images were horrifying and disturbing. They were all
Starting point is 00:21:14 photos taken of a girl who was tied to a chair and her mouth covered with duct tape. There were also yellow folders stacked in a row next to the photos, labeled from A to Zad. Oh, I didn't have the nerve to open the folders and see what was inside. I took out my phone to take pictures of the drawer's contents and planned to send them to my friends immediately, but I had no signal down there. It was definitely time to leave. I ran back to the door at the top of the stairs, but my nightmare only was. worsened when I found that the door was locked as soon as I tried to turn the knob. However, I heard the man's deep raspy voice on the other side of the door,
Starting point is 00:21:52 apologizing and saying that the door had accidentally locked and that he would go get the key quickly. I didn't say a word in response, closely examined the lock, ran back downstairs to the man's utility desk, grabbed three screwdrivers of different sizes, and tried each one in the door lock. The smallest screwdriver managed to fit into the rectangular lock. allowing me to turn it enough to unlock and open the door. I didn't stop to look around. I just ran out to my car.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I didn't look back at the house. I just drove to the nearest police station, showed them the photos, gave them the address, told them where to find the photos, and that was enough for them to start their investigation. A few days later, I received all the information. The man was part of a child pornography trade on the deep web, which was how he made his living.
Starting point is 00:22:42 why he decided to lock me in his basement I have no idea nor the slightest idea of what he intended to do with me but obviously it wasn't anything good Story 10 when I was a teenager I used to babysit at 14 I took care of a six-year-old boy named Cody when his parents left they gave me a few instructions just to order a pizza for dinner and not to let him go into his room they also made an interesting comment
Starting point is 00:23:13 that Cody acted differently from other kids and that he would talk to himself or to his imaginary friend, especially when playing with his toys. It was a rainy mid-afternoon, and I was watching an old TV show while Cody played on the floor with his toys scattered around the living room. Cody used the name Agnes and acted as if he was playing with another child sitting across from him.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Suddenly, one of his toys, which was on the other side of the room, activated on its own. It struck me as odd because it was one of those cubes with a crank that when pulled would display a moving racing background. It was the kind of toy that required effort to activate, and there it was, running by itself. I asked Cody how that was possible. He looked at me and said Agnes was playing with him. I admit it was a bit unsettling to hear him say that. I picked up the toy and turned it off. That night in the last hour waiting for his parents to return, I was in the bathroom washing up when someone knocked on the door. I said, Cody,
Starting point is 00:24:14 open the door but Cody wasn't there. I looked down the hallway towards Cody's direction. One of the doors at the end of the hallway began to open slowly, very slowly. I turned off the bathroom lights and walked towards the room expecting to see Cody trying to scare me. Instead, Cody was sitting on the bed in the farthest corner of the room watching me. I asked him who had opened the door. Agnes, he said. Truly frightened I went to pick Cody up from the room.
Starting point is 00:24:44 the bed and took him to the living room where I spent the rest of my shift until his parents came back. I didn't mention any of the strange occurrences, but when they contacted me a few weeks later to babysit Cody again, I never returned their call.
