Starting point is 00:01:29 Story 1, this happened in 2015. I had decided to take a road trip to a forest that was a few hours away from where I lived. The goal was to reach an old abandoned fire lookout station that I had been wanting to explore for a while. It's worth clarifying that technically entering or camping there wasn't allowed since the place wasn't maintained and there was a risk that the structure wasn't safe. However, I had done quite a bit of research online, and most of the comments claimed that it was still in decent condition. That said, the most recent post I found about it was over three years old, so I really had no idea what I would find once I got there.
Starting point is 00:02:07 I found a small pull-off along the road where I could park my vehicle. I slung my backpack over my shoulder, packed with provisions for two days, and started the hike. On adventures like this, there usually aren't marked trails to follow, so I used a portable satellite GPS to make sure I was heading in the right direction. In reality, the entire trek was just me pushing through unfamiliar terrain deep in the forest. The hike from the road to the site took about four or five hours, As I went further in, the vegetation grew thicker and the terrain more difficult. I was placing all my hope on the lookout tower still standing and being stable enough to sleep in.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Otherwise, I'd have no choice but to improvise and set up my tent somewhere nearby. After a few exhausting hours of trekking through the woods, I finally arrived. I caught a glimpse of the building peaking above the trees. When I got closer, I was surprised at how well-preserved it was. The paint had obviously faded, but the structure looked sturdy. I gave a few strong pushes to the support beams and they felt solid, so I decided to take the risk and climb the stairs. It was a metal staircase that squeaked with every step but felt fairly secure.
Starting point is 00:03:20 When I reached the top, I was amazed by the view. I could see practically the entire forest. No buildings, roads, or houses in sight, just nature, trees stretching for miles. After taking in the landscape for a while, I walked along the walkway surrounding the tower and went inside. The interior was tiny, nothing like those big structures that are turned into tourist accommodations these days. This was just a small 15-square-meter room. In one corner there was a completely deteriorated bed, and in another, an old wooden desk. The rotting windows covered one entire wall.
Starting point is 00:03:58 There wasn't much else to see, so I dropped my backpack to the floor. unrolled my sleeping pad and bag and heated up some food on my small camping stove. When the sun started to set, I stepped out onto the outer walkway to watch it go down. It was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever witnessed, though it felt like it passed too quickly, and darkness soon fell. The sky was overcast, so neither the moon nor stars illuminated the surroundings. With nothing else to do, I sat there on the walkway for a while longer. It must have been about an hour when I saw something moving among the trees.
Starting point is 00:04:35 There was a light moving through the forest. The strange thing was that it didn't seem like an ordinary artificial light. It had an orange tone and flickered like it was a torch or fire. That made me think it was a flame. The light moved among the trees not too far from where I was. What was odd was that the chances of someone else being in that remote part of the forest at the exact same time as me were nearly zero. especially considering there wasn't even a trail to get there.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Also, walking around at night using a torch instead of a normal flashlight was pretty weird. I watched the light move for a while between the trees until it disappeared behind something that blocked my view. I waited another 30 minutes, but it didn't reappear. I stayed out there for a bit longer, enjoying the silence and peace the night offered. But then the wind started picking up, and the cold pushed me to stand and take one last look. at the landscape before going to bed. That's when I looked down and saw someone. There was a person standing in the grassy area between the tower and the forest. They were completely still, looking directly up, right at me. Maybe it was the same individual I had seen earlier with the
Starting point is 00:05:47 light. Hello, I shouted, not really knowing what else to say. They didn't answer or move. We just stared at each other for about 10 or 15 seconds. Then they raised a hand. as if waving or apologizing and turned around to walk back into the forest. They weren't carrying any light. It was a creepy scene, I admit, but for some reason at the time I thought it was probably just another hiker who also wanted to stay at the tower. Maybe they were looking up to see if someone was already inside.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I didn't understand why they didn't answer when I spoke or why they simply raised their hand, but I didn't see any more signs of them. so after staying outside a few minutes longer I went in, got into my sleeping bag, and tried to warm up. It took me a while to fall asleep since the wind rattled the windows and the wood creaked under my weight, but I eventually drifted off. It's hard to know how much time had passed when I woke up, but I noticed the wind had calmed and everything outside was still completely dark. I opened my eyes not entirely understanding why I had woken up so suddenly,
Starting point is 00:06:55 until I heard a sound that was all too familiar, the faint metallic creaking of the exterior staircase. I sat up immediately thinking maybe I was imagining things, but the sound repeated again and again. Someone was climbing the stairs. I couldn't tell exactly where they were, if they were near the top or just beginning the climb, but I could clearly hear the hinges on the upper section groaning with every step they took. Outside, through the windows, there was absolutely nothing to see. The darkness covered everything. I got out of my sleeping bag with my heart pounding, grabbed my backpack.
Starting point is 00:07:33 I'm not even sure why I did, but it turned out to be the best decision I could have made and headed to the outer walkway. During the 20 seconds or so it took me to get outside, the creeks grew louder and more frequent, like whoever was climbing it started to hurry, until suddenly the sound stopped. right as I set foot on the walkway.
Starting point is 00:07:54 I stood completely still for a few moments, listening intently for any sound. Then I slowly moved along the walkway, circling the structure, until I reached the corner where the opening to the staircase was. There was no one there. I cautiously approached and with my pulse racing leaned over to look down. No one was climbing. No one was on the staircase. I froze trying to process what was happening.
Starting point is 00:08:20 I was confused, scared, unsure how to react. That's when I heard footsteps. A burst of rapid footsteps echoed behind me on the same wooden walkway. When I turned, I just barely caught a glimpse of a dark figure darting past the windows on the opposite side. I didn't waste any time. I bolted for the stairs and started climbing down as fast as I could. The metal was damp and slippery, and my whole body was shaking. Not just from the cold, but from the end.
Starting point is 00:08:50 adrenaline surge. I felt like that figure was right behind me about to grab me. I was halfway down when I looked up and saw a head peeking over the top. I didn't stop. I kept descending without pause until I reached the ground and immediately ran into the forest. I still don't understand why I brought my backpack with me when I went out to check, but it was the best thing I could have done. I had the flashlight and portable GPS inside, and thanks to that, I was able to find my way back to the the car. As far as I know, no one followed me. I drove away from there without looking back, and I never returned. Story two, I had gone camping at a small lake for the weekend. It really wasn't anything special, just a couple of days out in the forest by the water to disconnect and relax.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Nothing more than that. The first day went exactly as I expected. I arrived, set up my camp, and spent the day and night unwinding. This place was very. pretty remote, almost in the middle of nowhere. There was a narrow dirt path that led there, but it didn't appear on any online map, so probably only locals knew about it. My father used to take me there when I was a kid, and through all those years visiting that place, both in my childhood with him and now as an adult, going alone. I had never come across another person, not once. In fact, I had never even seen any sign that someone else had ever been there. The second day I spent walking around the lake, simply reflecting and letting my mind wander.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I think I circled the lake three or four times over the course of those hours. Everything was peaceful. It was the perfect setting. Until on one of the laps, I noticed something on the ground that I hadn't seen before. They were footprints. They were pressed into the dirt right at the edge where the forest meets the lake. I had walked that same loop several times already and hadn't noticed them before, where they were positioned they would have been impossible to miss.
Starting point is 00:10:58 They were so clear and visible that it seemed impossible I had overlooked them, and they looked fresh. But the most disturbing part wasn't just that they indicated someone else was nearby. The truly strange thing was that they weren't boot or shoe prints. They were barefoot. That part of the lake didn't even have easy access to the water, so it wasn't like someone had taken off their shoes to swim. And besides, if they had, I would have seen them in the lake.
Starting point is 00:11:24 lake. Finding that gave me a very unsettling feeling. Why hadn't I seen them while I was walking around? Were they hiding watching me without wanting to be seen? It was hard not to get paranoid after something like that. From what I could tell, the prince led from the forest edge toward the lake and then back into the trees, like someone had taken a look and returned into the woods. I didn't want to follow them. I had no intention of venturing into unknown territory deep in the forest. so I decided to return to my campsite. As I walked back, I kept looking toward the lake, or rather toward the tree line surrounding it,
Starting point is 00:12:03 expecting to see a figure or some movement, but I didn't see anyone. When the sun started to set, that feeling of unease came rushing back. There was something about those footprints that wouldn't let me rest. Knowing that someone was probably nearby, even though I couldn't see them, wasn't exactly comforting. With darkness falling, I stoked the,
Starting point is 00:12:24 fire, making sure I had enough wood to keep it burning. I sat by the fire trying to clear my mind, easier said than done. Part of me felt justified in being alert. The other part thought maybe I was overreacting, letting my imagination run wild. But it wasn't long into the night when I heard footsteps approaching from the trees. I stood up immediately and turned toward the sound, which was coming from the darkness between the trunks. It wasn't just one person. It sounded like two, walking slowly, getting closer to where I was. I stared hard in the direction the sounds were coming from until suddenly they emerged into the firelight's glow. It was a man and a woman.
Starting point is 00:13:09 They walked side by side and stopped right at the edge of where the fire's light began to fade. I couldn't see their faces clearly or many details beyond the silhouettes of their bodies. I couldn't even tell how old they were, whether they were young or old. Can I help you with something? I asked, not hiding my surprise. As soon as I spoke, the woman turned and ran back into the forest, vanishing completely within seconds. But the man stood still, unmoving. He didn't even glance at the woman as she fled.
Starting point is 00:13:41 That's when I looked down and realized he wasn't wearing any shoes either. They were, without a doubt, the ones who had left the footprints around the lake. I asked again if they needed anything, but this time he just turned and calmly walked off. into the forest without saying a word. After what had just happened, I had a kind of internal collapse. It was, without a doubt, the strangest and most disturbing encounter I had ever experienced in my life. Everything felt unreal, like it couldn't possibly be happening. I had absolutely no intention of staying in that forest for even one more second. As soon as the man disappeared into the trees, I started packing up as fast as I could.
Starting point is 00:14:21 I'm not one of those people who sticks around when things start to get weird. Fortunately, my gear was easy to take down, so within just a few minutes, I had everything packed and strapped tightly into my backpack. I didn't know exactly where they had gone, but the only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want to be there if they decided to come back. I put out the fire, pushing the unburned logs into the embers, so they would go out quickly after I left. Then I made my way into the forest moving fast, following the same trail I had taken in. The hike back to my truck was nearly two hours long. For the first ten minutes I was completely tense,
Starting point is 00:15:01 my senses on high alert. I couldn't stop thinking that maybe they were following me, but the farther I got from the campsite, the calmer I started to feel. I had been walking for about 40 minutes. The forest was dead silent, not even crickets or insects could be heard. and then suddenly the silence was broken. I heard hurried footsteps not far from me. They were coming from a distance, maybe about 30 meters away. It was without a doubt someone running. I couldn't see anything between the trees so all I could do was keep walking.
Starting point is 00:15:36 I didn't stop, but my mind was fully alert again. Just a few minutes later I heard it again, but now from the opposite side of where it had come before. again running footsteps though strangely quiet like whoever was running wasn't wearing shoes that made me think it was the same two people i had seen by the lake and if they had followed me this far into the forest what were their intentions for a while i kept hearing those footsteps running in short bursts like someone was stalking me from the darkness and then darting off in the opposite direction i can't imagine anything more terrifying than that walk through the forest in the middle of the middle of it of the night, with the constant feeling that someone or something is watching you, and you have no idea from where. Despite all of that, I made it back to my truck. I got out of there without looking back. I wish I could say I found out who that man and woman were, or what they were doing in such a remote place, but I have no answers. Maybe I'm crazy, but sometimes I wonder if those
Starting point is 00:16:39 people were even alive. I don't know. And honestly, I'm not sure I want to know. I never went back to that place again. Story 3. I'm a 24-year-old woman from northern Arizona. This happened a couple of years ago. At the time, I was living in a small camper van, traveling along the West Coast. There are many different ways people choose to live when they have these kinds of vehicles or RVs. I always tried to avoid big cities. I preferred camping in small towns or, if possible, getting lost deep in nature.
Starting point is 00:17:18 What I truly enjoyed was camping in remote. road areas, far away from everything. I felt safer in the middle of the woods, completely alone, than trying to blend into a crowded parking lot in a city. Don't get me wrong, being alone in the woods at night can be scary sometimes, but I always knew that even with that fear, it was safer than being in an urban area. That week I was traveling slowly, making my way between two large cities in Washington State. I was taking my time, sticking to back roads and staying. in each spot for a few days before moving on. That particular day I veered off the main road and followed a small dirt path that led deeper into the forest. There were several pull-off
Starting point is 00:18:01 spots along the way, but none of them were occupied. In fact, it looked like no one had been there in a long time. I decided to keep going, hoping to find a wider and quieter place to settle. At the end of the road, I found a clearing big enough to park in. It wasn't particularly scenic, just trees all around, but it was spacious, secluded, quiet, and it even had a fire ring made of stones in the center. I leveled the van and parked. It was spring, and in Washington that meant rain almost every day. Because of that, there wasn't much I could do outside. I opened the van's side door to let in some fresh air while I cooked on my propane stove. The sun was setting, so I still had a few hours before bedtime. Over the next 30 minutes, the sun disappeared and the rain began to pick up.
Starting point is 00:18:53 I closed the side door to keep the interior dry and left only one of the small rear windows cracked open. I sat on the bed and started watching a show on my laptop. In the middle of the episode, something interrupted my attention. A flash of light reflected on the laptop screen from the window behind me. It was a light. It didn't last long. It didn't move away. It didn't move away. simply shut off, like someone had turned off a flashlight. I turned around and looked out the window, but I didn't see anything. It was too dark outside, and the rain was pouring hard. I had no way of knowing how far that light was or where it had come from exactly. Considering I was parked along a trail with several pull-off spots, I figured maybe it was another camper. Maybe the lights from
Starting point is 00:19:40 their vehicle had somehow shone through the trees and into my window, and then they just turned the car off. but something felt off. That light hadn't come from the direction of the road I used to get in. Behind my window there were only trees. No path, no visible trail. Maybe there was another road I didn't know about, but there wasn't much I could do to investigate it. So I turned my attention back to the show.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Every now and then I glanced out the windows or thought I heard something outside the van, but with the rain constantly hitting the metal roof, I couldn't be sure if I was really hearing anything. Each time I looked I didn't see anything that confirmed someone was out there, so I didn't worry too much. I think it was around 10 or 11 at night when I decided it was time to sleep. I turned everything off inside the van, shut the windows completely, and pulled the curtains down. It was almost total darkness inside.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I got under the covers and tried to fall asleep. Normally I didn't have trouble sleeping, but that night I just couldn't seem to relax. The rain started pounding harder about an hour later. Thunder rolled in two, loud enough to make it impossible to sleep. Around two hours after I'd laid down, through the sound of the storm, I swear I heard something outside. It was loud enough that I knew I wasn't imagining it. It sounded like someone or something had run and stepped on a branch,
Starting point is 00:21:07 snapping it on the ground right next to my van. As soon as I heard that, there were no more sounds. The darkness was so intense that I couldn't even see the ground outside the window. The more I stared into it, the more uneasy I felt. I had this overwhelming sensation, like someone was staring back at me. I pulled the curtain back down. I sat on the bed trying to convince myself I was overreacting, but just a minute later I heard a voice.
Starting point is 00:21:36 It was a man's voice, speaking in a loud but hush tone, like he was whispering to someone nearby. I went completely silent. frozen. I didn't dare lift the curtain or look out the windows because I knew that if I could see them, they could see me too. Although honestly, they probably already knew someone was inside the van. That was the scariest part. Two or three minutes passed without any sound other than the rain and thunder. Then suddenly I heard something right next to the sliding side door. It sounded like someone leaning against the plastic panel of the door. Then, knocking. A few second
Starting point is 00:22:14 later, another knock. Even though I was sure that person knew I was inside, fear kept me completely silent. Maybe they didn't know how many people were in the van or whether it was a man or a woman inside. That in some strange way gave me a small sense of security, so I decided not to say a word to remain totally quiet. About five-tenths minutes passed, with knock after knock, spaced only a few seconds apart. No one said anything, just the sound of knuckles hitting the metal and the heavy rain pounding on the roof. It was such an absurd and terrifying scene. This person must have been completely soaked, unable to see clearly, and yet they stayed there knocking like they were waiting for me to open up. That's when finally the voice spoke again. Sheriff's Department
Starting point is 00:23:04 opened the door. I didn't believe it for a second. If it really had been a little, law enforcement officer, why hadn't they said that from the beginning? Why start with eerie silence, whispering through the rain, and only later identify themselves as police? The knocking continued, this time with each knock followed by different phrases, all repeating the same message, that it was an officer and I needed to open the door. It all sounded like a desperate attempt to make me lower my guard and convince me to open up on my own. With my heart racing, I slowly moved toward the window and lifted the curtain just a little to peek outside. I didn't see a uniform, no flashlight, no badge, just a dark figure moving near the door. Judging by the shape of the
Starting point is 00:23:51 body and the silhouette, I could tell they weren't wearing anything that resembled police gear. That's when I knew things were about to get truly dangerous. For about 30 seconds, I argued with myself over what to do. The knocking became more intense, more urgent. Finally, I decided to take the risk. I ran to the driver's seat, determined to start the van and get out of there. The moment I sat down and started the engine, I heard footsteps rushing toward me. Not one set, two, two pairs of feet running up to the side of the van. My pulse spiked as I threw the van into gear and began to pull out of the clearing. Just as I did, a figure appeared right at my window. Thank God the van didn't get stuck in the mud. I managed to leave the campsite and get onto the
Starting point is 00:24:39 the trail quickly. As I drove away, I kept an eye out for any other vehicles or signs that anyone else might be on the road. There was nothing. No cars, no lights, no trace of anyone, which makes all of this even more disturbing. Once I was safe, I filed a report with the county office. As expected, they told me there hadn't been any officers patrolling that area that night. No one from their department had been out there. I didn't get any follow-up either. Things could have gone very badly. I don't know what those people wanted, but I know for sure they weren't the police. Since then, luckily, I haven't experienced anything like it again.
